Live time is ticking down, Texas is pulling away twenty
four to eight, and yet again it looks like we
might get a college football playoff game that doesn't have
a riveting ending. It's a Doug Gottlieb show on Fox
Sports Radio. Kevin Figures Jason fitz In for Doug, broadcasting
live from the tirack dot com studios.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Tyrack dot com will help you get there.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
An unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road has a
protection over ten thousand recommended installers ti rack dot com
the way tire buying should be. This game has gone
back and forth. Figure this game has had moments. If
you looked at the first half, it looked like Cam
Scattaboho's never going to get going. In the second half,
he really has Arizona State with the ball and desperately
(00:53):
trying to find a way to stay competitive in this game.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
But it is now.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Twenty four to eight with only about eight and a
half minutes to go, starting to feel like the mountain
is too tough to climb, and if Arizona State can't
get points here, we're in desperate the possibility of looking
at yet another college football playoff game that does not
come down to the wire.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
Yeah, Arizona State's at a point now where they're kind
of running against time, have time run against them. They look,
we know that they're the best. They're bread and Butter's
running the ball with camp scatabol. Well, it's hard to
do that when you're down by two scores. So to
your point, it makes this drive doubly important. About eight
and a half minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Now,
they got to try to make sure they get some
points here with time left on the clock, so that
they can stop Texas, so that they can get the
(01:31):
ball back. There's a lot of sobats and ifs ands
and butts when it comes to Arizona State. So time
is not on their side at this point in time.
I will say camp Scattabul has woken up a little bit.
Twenty four carries a buck sixteen, that's four point eight
yards per carry, and it's had some big carries here
in the second half. So Texas has not quote unquote
stopped him. Sure, but they've certainly stymied him enough to
a point where Arizona State is playing catch up and
(01:53):
really have been since they're opening part of the game. So, yes,
it's twenty four to eight. But to your point, FIZZI,
the way this game has sort of played its way
out so far, Texas is not dominating as much as
many people thought that they would.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, this feels like one of those games.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
You know, I said, yesterday's Penn State game, Penn State
never felt like it was in question. I always felt
like the Penn State had gets hold of that game.
They were gonna win by a pretty convincing margin. This
feels like Texas is gonna win the game, but it
doesn't feel like Texas has particularly been some juggernaut in
the process, right like Arizona State has just and this
is the case in a lot of these games, Arizona
State with some really terrible mistakes. I mean, we're talking
(02:31):
about a missfield goal, We're talking about a punt return touchdown.
I mean, look at take the seven points off the
board for the special teams for Texas, they'd only have seventeen.
Add the three points from the missfield goal. This could
be a seventeen to eleven game, and then we're talking
about it much differently. I think seventeen eleven feels a
little bit more apropos of what the actual game flow
has felt like. So I am a little bit I'm
(02:52):
a little bit shook it here because Texas just is
not dominated at all. Their offense hasn't been able to
do anything in this game to what I expected them
to be able to do. So shout out to Texas defense.
Their backs have to hurt from carrying the whole team
in this game. But man, if I'm Texas, I'm looking
squarely in the mirror saying, now, let's add this.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
To what we saw in the SEC Championship game.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Now you got two out of the last three games
where Texas couldn't run the ball at all, couldn't really
impact offensively the line of scrimmage at all. Boy, that
makes me nervous if I'm Texas. Because I'm this, every
single opponent I get after this game is going to.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Be much much more difficult.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, well, they're gonna be able to score points, Like
that's the big issue of Texas. Like, look, Texas has
what forty two yards rushing so far here through three
to three more than three and a half quarters against
Arizona State. If they're not able to run the football
next week against Ohio State or against Oregon, who we know,
those teams are just gonna pencil it in. Those guys
are gonna score at least twenty four to thirty one points.
You're telling me that Quinn yours is gonna have to
(03:51):
be able to match that against those caliber defenses. Look
Ohio State and Oregon, by the way, defensively, those they're
as good as anyone. They give up some points here
and there, but that's because they play against such talented
teams in the Big Ten. My concern for Texas is
if they get into a situation where they allow twenty
four to thirty one points against one of those teams.
Can they do they have the firepower, specifically from the
quarterback position, to be able to keep up sands a
(04:14):
running game. I don't believe that they do.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Yeah, and look what you're saying here only frustrates me
more about the way we're talking about Oregon right now.
Like Oregon's the number one team in the country. Everybody
knows that, but y'all like the thing that I keep
hearing on organ is will when they play good teams,
they sure do give up a lot of yards and points.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I don't know why that's the voice today, it just is.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
But that's what everybody says when they play good team, right,
and that's where everybody's going with And to that, I
would say, okay, in all games that they won, like
they've they've won three games this season against playoff teams,
and the only thing we could say is, well, they
sure do give up a lot of yards and points,
all right, and they get a lot of yards and points.
I don't the fatal flaw if you take the worst
of everybody. If we go back to the old Olympics
(04:55):
where you like you throw out the worst games, Well,
the worst game that we'd be talking about for Ohio
State was that turd against Michigan. That thing was just
absolutely ugly, right, And we want to.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Sit here and like compare that.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
We want to compare the worst moment of Ohio State.
The worst moment of Texas this year was the SEC
championship game when they actually took on a run defense
that they just couldn't do anything against. The worst moment
Notre Dame was in the most inexcusable loss in all
of college football this year. Like the worst moment, we
go up and down the list. The worst moment for Georgia,
I mean, they've got a half of just absolutely disgusting
(05:28):
football they put up against Alabama.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
The worst moment for Oregon. Still a win. I'm just saying,
still a win.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
So maybe we should just recalibrate the way we talk
about the Ducks a little bit in this No.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Yeah, and look, I wasn't saying that as if that
were my opinion. That's just kind of what's throwing out
there in Oregon. I have no issues whatsoever.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
You got.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Look, you play, you play in front of you. Oregon offensively,
as Ben's phenomenal, and defensively they've been able to get
stops where they needed to. Look at that Ohio State game,
it was a one point game, and like you talk
about guys faking injuries or whatever you want to call it, Asu,
by the way, just hit a huge pass play on
a trick play. So they're back on the board, not
out of it yet, six thirty one to go twenty
four to fourteen, Texas penning the extra point. I assume
(06:07):
that Arizona State is gonna end up going for two here.
We'll end up seeing how that ends up playing itself out.
But yeah, to your point, we said about this about
Penn State earlier when talking about them making into the
postseason and steamrolling teams, lesser teams, lesser uponents. You can
only play who's in front of you. And if your Oregon, yes,
you have your sheriff struggles, but ultimately all that matters
is that you end up getting w's every single time
(06:28):
that you play. Until your point, you have big wins
against the likes of Ohio State. You beat Penn State already.
I mean, I don't know what more you can ask
Oregon to do.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, one thousand percent. We're waiting here to see what
Arizona State does. As they are down by ten to
your point, they're gonna have to go for two. We'll
see if they convert that two point conversion, which would
make it a one score game with six and a
half to go. So we finally do have, like a
glory be to God, what can he do? We finally
have a college football playoff game that looks like it's
(06:58):
giving up so riveting and a fine right, so, and
the two point conversion is good. We have an eight
point we have a one possession game with six and
a half to go. So as a lover of chaos,
I hope that we get even more chaos and we
see Arizona State advance and that changes a lot of
the tone of a lot of the conversation. Did be
bad about the college football, But we need one big upset, Figgie,
(07:18):
one big upset to the whole thing will turn around
the way we talk about some of these teams, and
certainly Arizona State showing that they belong. I mean, every
single game so far seems to have been an indictment
on who does or doesn't belong in Arizona State showing
they belong. They stayed in this game to you, as
you said in the first half, Texas, let them stick around,
(07:40):
and now they're still sticking around.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Yeah. Now, look now the onus is going to be
on Quinn you wers and that offense. Can they get
a bit of a running game going? Can you? We
has hit a couple of big plays like he did
early on in the first quarter, and it's something that
we talked about in the first hour of the show.
He was under duress and has been under to rest
the majority of the game. So now Arizona State some
renewed further momentums back in their side, so interested to
see what Texas does if they end up going three
(08:02):
and out. Look out, absolutely look out. We're looking at
total complete chaos as you mentioned, and look at as
a PAC ten slash PAC twelve. Wifer, I'm not saying
that I'm not necessarily rooting for a potential Arizona State
Oregon A semi final to to say, hey, look at this,
this is the relic of the PAC twelve. One of
them is going to the national championship game. Just selfishly
on my part.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
You're not wrong.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
I mean there is some level of just what we're
seeing right now for PAC twelve vers this gotta feel
pretty good, Like it's got to feel good all the
way down into your heart because you're looking at it saying, hey,
this is a school that.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Still has ties to us.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Absolutely what an incredible for all of the conversation about
conference realignment this year, you know, all of these new
rivalries and all of the old rivalries that was killing
and people yelling and screaming about everything, and I'm looking
around them and thinking, okay, well, conference Realignment certainly gave
us drama with Texas, It gave us drama with Arizona State,
and gave us drama with Oregon.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Like these things they worked.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
It's the brands that we thought UCLA USC, we thought
might be able to come in and be competitive, were
not out of the gates in conference. Late Realignment was
still a massive win. So yeah, you're not wrong at all.
I was mentioned in New Year's Resolutions earlier. We'll keep
you updated on the game. Twenty four to sixteen is
the score, six thirty to go Texas is.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Ahead New Year's Resolutions.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
I want to kind of go around here and figure
out what we have for our favorite teams. And I
would love for anybody to tweet us and tell us
what your New Year's resolution is for your favorite team
as well, because I'm sitting here thinking about resolutions. At
the beginning of the we said you and I all
of us sort of kind of agree we don't have them,
but you know, if you could make a wish, like
I'm going down to cover the Super Bowl for Yahoo,
I'll be down there all week. I'm figui, I'm going
(09:42):
into like every voodoo place I can find, every witch
doctor every magic doctor. I'm going to take all of them.
I'm just going to go in and say, I need
two things. I need a voodoo doll that's going to
make the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Not as good.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
And I need a voodoo doll that's finally going to
make my beloved Raiders amazing.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
So like my New Year's resolution.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
For the Raiders, is it they somehow some way find
a quarterback, which is you know, at this point asking
for an actual Christmas miracles.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
No, there's no easy solution.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
I'm asking for a Christmas I need the fat Man
to deliver my team an incredible quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
That's all. That's all I need.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Yeah, not the the hardest position to fill in all
the professional sports, not at all. Look, I'm right there
with you, right in that Raider train a quarterback. And
dare I even say? And I look, I hate to
be in the business of saying guys should or shouldn't
be fired and all that. I just don't know that
at Ap is the right guy for the job. To
be honest with you, I think the job may be
too big for him. Look, a lot of guys are
applying for him to get the head coaching job. At
(10:35):
the end of last season, Demonte Adams isn't even there anymore.
He asked out after four or five games, you know.
So I do think they need new direction from a
head coaching position as well. And obviously the big the big,
biggest void is the quarterback position. So obviously that will
be the newest resolution for me for the Raiders, a
new quarterback. And quite honestly, I think they probably need
a new direction from head coach as well.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
I think when you need a oh interception, Arizona State
just picks off quinn Ewers on a deep ball. Arizona
State has the ball back with five and a half
to go in this game, down by eight, Arizona State
gets the big interception there.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
So I think when you mentioned I've got.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Thoughts on a rebuild, and this applies not just to
the Raiders, but to the Titans, the Giants, everybody. There's
one thing that I think every rebuilding team gets wrong.
When we come back, I'll tell you what that is possible.
Get updated on the college football semifinal game that has
now gotten very or quarterfinal game that has now gotten
very interesting. Texas just turned the ball over down by eight.
We'll get you updated on the Latest when We come back,

Speaker 2 (11:52):
For the first time in college football Playoff expanded history,
we got a game. We got a doozy. Cam'scatabay has
absolutely been undeniable. In the second half, a deep interception
by quinn Ewers leads to possession by Ohio by Aras
Ohio State, I'm already jumping ahead by Arizona State. Arizona
(12:14):
State drives down the field and scores a touchdown. As
I speak right now, they are going for a two
point conversion to try and tie the game. Sam Levitt
rolling out, trying to find anybody he can throw the
ball to in one of those herculean video game type plays.
Finally heaves the ball up. It is no good, it
is intercepted. There's a flag on the play. Will keep
you updated. Arizona State as it stands right now, pending
(12:37):
the flag down by two, five minutes to go, a
game that Texas has had multiple opportunities to simply put
the game away and haven't been able to do it.
Texas's offense has been stymied throughout It is holding on Texas.
They will try the two point conversion again. Figgie, this
is the drama we signed up for. Twenty four to
(12:58):
twenty two? Is the current score pen the two point conversion.
Arizona State's gonna get another shot at this two point conversion.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Remember they trail by two at this point.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
But this is a game where they gave up a
touchdown on a part return, they missed a field goal,
they had a fourth and goal from short that they
weren't able to convert.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Arizona State could easily.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Be looking at this saying, my god, we should be
winning this game right now. Is this is a huge
turn of events from when we started the show.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Sam Levin looking like Archie Manning by the way, running
for his life on that last two point conversion. Temp
like arch Manning, who may see some planning time here,
We'll see after cure viewers just through a completely terrible
interception into double coverage that set this touchdown drive up
for Arizona State. But this is what college football is
all about. This is what we love about it. You
have a team Arizona State, who was under sanctions for
(13:42):
the last two years, lost a lot of their scholarship players,
had to transfer in a bunch of guys. Camp Scattabo
was a guy that no big major conference team wonted.
And by the way, after the penalty, camp Scatabo does
run it in for the two point conversion. So we
are knotted up at twenty four a piece with five
minutes to go versus bad Texas that has all the
recres in the world, all the money in the world,
and all of a sudden, you find yourself in a
(14:03):
playoff game, and all of a sudden, anything can happen.
This is why we love college sports so much because
upsets like this, underdogs like Arizona State can find a
way to stay into a game, find a way to
come back, and put a team like Texas, a national
championship contender, on their heels. I love it.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
I mean this is again, you know, this is what
college football needed. What the college football Playoffs had to
have happened for everybody to just shut up and enjoy
football was this. It doesn't even have to result in
a win for Arizona State it had to be this.
It had to finally be a close game. It had
to be a back and forth. It had to be
a juggernaut to It had to be against one of
(14:43):
the big programs that has national name recognition. It had
to happen this way for everybody to just take a big,
deep breath and realize we are We're not even.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
One full year in to the expanded playoff.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
We didn't even make it out of one round of
the new expanded Playoffs before everybody decided it was broken.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
And now all of a sudden, who I mean that.
This is why it's.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Also dangerous for people to sit here and say the
committee is supposed to sit down and figure out the matchups.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I yelled this all the time, you.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Know, like I covered the College Football Playoff Committee for ESPN.
I've done the mock committee exercise a couple of times.
I've covered the college football Playoff at this point for
seven years. So this system, when everybody sits back and says, okay,
you know what they wanted to put this team against
that team, the college Football Playoff commtee never thinks of that.
They don't care because if they start worrying about the matchups.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
It's a slippery slope.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Well, I think this team would be better matched up
against that team, and that would make for better TV.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
What happens when they start to get.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
That wrong, They really do to take an altruistic view
of we're going to vote on the teams, we're going
to rank the teams.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Now.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
They can't help the fact that the seating change the rankings.
But this game is living, eating, breathing proof that you
don't want subjective minds to sit here and try and
decide what a good matchup would be or what a
good matchup wouldn't be, because it takes away the magic
of what we're getting right now.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Yeah, and it look for as much as we say
that it's a made for TV product and that brands matter,
and that might give a certain seam and edge of
making it in on the back end of the rankings
then another But yeah, to your point, once the teams
are in there, you know, you throw them in where
they fit from a ranking standpoint for the where you
think the best team number one versus two, three, four, five,
sixcess and then let it kind of figure itself out
(16:22):
at that point in time. Yeah, you can't. It's a
dangerous game because then what you start doing is, well,
I'm going to assume that this team is going to
beat this team in the first round, so that's going
to set up an epic matchup in round two. Okay,
so what if that doesn't happen, then all of a sudden,
you're set up with, you know, two small schools playing
each other in a semi final that nobody cares about.
So to your point, they're not going to end up
sizing things up that way. But I do love I
(16:42):
love the current format the way that it is because,
as we discussed and been discussing throughout the show, it
sets up these potential upset matchups. Look, even if Arizona
State doesn't win, if Texas ends up driving the ball
downfield and wins twenty seven to twenty four, that's a
funal on a matchup. It was an almost upset. It
was a team like Arizona State that went down fourteen
to nothing before they can blink, even as an underdog,
and finding a way to fight themselves back into it
(17:04):
and to make it into a game. So even if
the underdog doesn't win, the fact of the game turned
out to be competitive, I think is all that the committee,
all that college football fans could ask for.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Yeah, and it's just a loud, screaming reminder of how
awesome this year has been too. Like right now as
we sit with a tie game with only a few
minutes left to go, five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
If you're just tuning in, it's a Doug Gottlieb show
on Fox Sports Radio coming at your life from the
tirak dot com studios. Kevin Figures Figures, I'm Jason fitz
We're hanging out with you, Patrick and Iowa Sam doing
(17:34):
God's work behind the scenes for us. We've got a
tie football game, twenty four to twenty four with five
minutes to go. Arizona State kicks the ball out of
bounds foolishly. It's going to give some great field position.
Cam Scantabo is like the legend of Cam is growing
in front of our very eyes. There's some moments are
going to be memed out of this. The growl of
Cam's face after his helmet was ripped off. Not only
(17:56):
has he obviously been a force to be reckoned with running,
but he threw a touch down on a trick play
like it's a it's been a cam game throughout the Yeah, citizen.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
The wink at the camera. I don't know if you
saw as he walked back on the field after a
time out before that, before they scored the touchdown to
tie it up, just looked over to the camera, eyeball
to eyeball and winked into the camera as if he knew.
Like I said, you guys can't stop me, And all
of a sudden, you look up. Twenty six carries a
buck thirty three a touchdown on the ground, eighty three
yards receiving, and a big catch as well. So cam
(18:26):
scatabuse go into the game. Y'all can't stop me. They couldn't.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
He was right.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Yeah, he's making some money too because he's doing it
against the grown ass defense like this Texas defense gets
a lot of credit.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
From NFL guys.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
And look the fact that as we sit right now,
we'll see but we can end up with a final
four in this that's for example, Arizona State, Oregon, Penn State,
and Notre Dame. To think that the first expanded college
football Playoff would give us no SEC teams, Oh my god,
that's just that's that's just sex, just putting, you know,
just inject that in my veins. That's just amazing. I
(18:59):
just and so again, I got no dog in the fight.
SEC fans don't at me. Everybody's convinced I hate their
favorite team.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
I don't. I don't care one way or the other.
I just like chaos.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
So chaos and me is no SEC team in the
In the final four of this, I want to get
back to New Year's resolutions for our favorite teams. We've
got some good ones coming on that before we We'll
give a couple of minutes here before we throw to
Isaac so we can get a little bit of give
the game a second to breathe. Iowa, Sam, do you
have a New Year's resolution for your favorite team?
Speaker 5 (19:30):
Not only do I have one, I have three and
they're all Iowa caulated.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
You can't play them anything.
Speaker 5 (19:39):
Don't don't blow the you know the plot here. I
was just let me just get into this first. Go ahead,
me preface a little bit.
Speaker 6 (19:45):
So.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
I grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, proud of Aluma,
of the University of Iowa. Iowa City's right there and
where the University of Byoway is. So I have a
resolution for Iowa football iowamen's basketball and Iowa women's basketball.
So start with Iowa football. Here there's your resolution for
twenty twenty five. Continue your journey of self improvement. The
resolution really started last year, guys. Brian farrens out like
(20:08):
you said, a fig tim lester in at oc at
the OC position, rushing yards up, scoring up. But in
twenty twenty five, the work to be done is on
that passing attack. Continue to master the skill of the
forward pass. You, Iowa football, are close to becoming a
complete team. And when you do, become a complete team.
(20:30):
One more resolution, Try to beat a ranked team, because
Iowa is on a nasty dry streak against ranked teams
going back to twenty twenty one. All right, that was
the long one here. Let's get to Iowa men's basketball.
Make a deep NCAA tournament run, and by deep run,
I mean make it past the round of thirty two.
Coach fran is getting a little long in the tooth.
He's overdue. And finally, Iowa women's basketball continue to be
(20:53):
the shining beacon of women's sports. Continue to be the
epicenter of passion for women's college basketball. It was real,
It was like that before Caitlin Clark ever showed up
on campus. You know, Lisa Bluter for most of the
twenty first century really had a great culture, and you know,
fans came out, but not to the levels that they
did when Cci was in town. But now that she's
gone continue to you know, fans are still packing the
(21:15):
stands there at Carver Hockey Arena. They're showing up to
watch Iowa women's basketball, which is great. You know, Lucy
Olsen from Villanova, she transferred over because she knew that
iow would be a contender and they'd sell out their
home games and there just continue to be. You Iowa
women's basketball continue to really lift up the game of
women's sports there and women's basketball in Iowa City. Those
(21:36):
are my resolutions for the iowhaw Keys.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Okay, I like those.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
By the way, I would say, I'm a good friend
of mine that I work with a bunch on fantasy
football side.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
On the AAOHU side, it has been.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
A long time Iowa women's basketball season ticket holder, and
he spent much of the Caitlin Clark journey saying, hey,
this is awesome, but just you know, this is not
out of the norm for what we used to what
we usually have around here, Like people care a lot
about women's college basketball, which I love.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
I love, Like, yeah, it should be that way. You know,
it's it's not just Kaitlin.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
The Iowa women's basketball program existed just like the w NBA.
It existed before Kitlyn Clark showed up. So it was
it was a thriving, very healthy program. And obviously Kaitlyn
Clark raise it to new levels. But post post CC,
it's like, you know, a BC and AD. You know,
it's like a whole shift in how we how we
mark time and the passage of time. But you know,
(22:26):
they're they're going to continue to sell out crowds there
and lift up women's sports. They have women's wrestling in
Iowa City. So let's go. Let's keep it going.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
All right, we'll get Patrick's resolution.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
I still want to give you everybody a thought on
how to rebuild your franchise. But importantly, we've got a
college football semifinal game going quarterfinal. I keep on to
call it semi final quarterfinal.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
Game going on right now.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
We need to get an update on So Isaac, tell
us what's going on in the world.
Speaker 7 (22:51):
Two minutes left to play in the fourth quarter of
the peach Ball College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Arizona State and
Texas are tied at twenty four. Texas has a first
down and ten upcoming at the Arizona State thirty yard
line with six thirty two left on the fourth quarter.
Texas led this game twenty four to eight when Cam
(23:13):
Skataboo went crazy all over the field. Here was Tim
Healy on k MVP.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
They pitch it to Skataboo and now it's going to
be a pass.
Speaker 8 (23:22):
Scataboo throwing downfield and it's caught. It's caught, and this
is going to be a touchdown, a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
To Malik McClain.
Speaker 8 (23:30):
Malik McClean, with his first touchdown, catches a Sun Devil
on a forty two yard throw from guess who, Cam Scattaboo.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
Sun Devils then went for two and made it to
make it twenty four to sixteen Texas. Quinn Viewers then
had a pass intercepted by Arizona State's Jayvon Robinson. Scataboo
scored on a two yard touchdown run to make it
twenty four to twenty two Texas. Arizona State went for
two to tie it. Texas got called for defensive holding,
(24:03):
so the play was nullified. Off an incomplete Arizona State pass,
the Sun Devil's got another chance to tie the game,
and the only choice to get the ball was Scataboo for.
Speaker 8 (24:12):
The two point conversion in the tie. The gift the Scataboo,
and Scataboo is at there. He has tied the ball
game with five minutes to go.
Speaker 7 (24:21):
Superman has done it again, twenty four to twenty four,
two minutes left to play in the fourth quarter, and
Texas had a first down and ten at the Arizona thirty,
but they've just gotten called for a false start. So
it's first and fifteen now for Texas on the Arizona
State thirty five yard line with two minutes to play.
(24:41):
Tonight's Sugar Bowl game between Georgia and Notre Dame was
postponed until Thursday in the wake of the attack overnight
on Bourbon Street that killed at least ten people, the
attack occurring approximately one mile from the Superdome, and one
other piece of information that just came down Jason and
Kevin Yahoo Sports reporting a short time ago. Officials are
(25:02):
now discussing a moved up kickoff time of three pm
Central time on Thursday, which would be four pm Eastern
time on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Back to you guys.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Thanks, Isaac, appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Yeah, and that report came from Ross tellinger over y'aho's
sports so shameless, I will tell you be sure to
check out y'all Who's Sports. That happens to be where
I spend most of my time. So y'all who Sports
Inside coverage in the College Football Power Hour two podcasts
we have over there that I'm a part of. That
I'm really proud of that. We do some really good
work on So if you guys haven't checked out, Yeah,
Who's Sports good out there? And Ross is one of
the best in the business. I will say I do
(25:35):
love the Arizona State announcer. How do you do Cam Scattaboo?
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Various shades of John Sterling on that one. I like
that one.
Speaker 2 (25:42):
Yeah, and again one fifty five not out ago in
this game, in regulation, in this game. If you get
an update, if there is an update, you'll hear us
all screaming and yelling. Because this is why I love
what I do. Like, that's why we love what we do.
Like we sit in these chairs and get to talk
about sports because we love them. We're watching the game
just same as you are, trying to keep our focus
with the TV blaring in the background. So while we
(26:05):
wait for an update on this game, Patrick, we've been
going through New Year's resolutions for our favorite team.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Patrick, you got me for your favorite team? What do
you got? I do?
Speaker 6 (26:12):
I have two for my two favorite teams and they're
both in the NFL, And I know that's gonna be
like what, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
Stop, I know what? How do you have two favorite
teams in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (26:23):
It's a long story, but I'm a Viking and a
Seahawks fan. My number one Seattle and my number two
is the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
Stop it.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Every everybody knows this.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Everybody knows I know.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
But anyways, we're gonna go with what happens if they
play in the NFC Championshi, I'm sure you've answered this before.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
You have her for say, by the way, Fits, there
was a playoff matchup not too long ago between these
two teams where Minnesota missed a chip Shop goal and
won a playoff game. Yeah, so were you happy or
you say, were you in different pet?
Speaker 6 (26:51):
Like?
Speaker 4 (26:51):
How does that work?
Speaker 6 (26:52):
I was happy at whoever one made it through because
I knew that I knew that it was a guarantee win,
heedging my dad was. My dad wasn't very happy. He's
the he was born from Minnesota, so he you know.
I'm more like, I'm happy whoever wins, if they warred,
you go to the NFC Championship. I can say it
on national radio. If Seattle, Minnesota ever were to go
in the NFC Championship, who do I pick? Whoever wins
(27:14):
goes to Super Bowl. I'm happy with whoever. I have
literally no preference, even though Seattle is technically my number one.
I'm like, I'll be happy and I will be content
with whoever as long as there's no injury.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
I would say, just like, you know what, I want
Seattle to win because they're my number one. They're my team.
But if many wins, you know, Minnesota, that's my dad's squad.
I'm happy for my father, but Seattle to win.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
But I don't want to say like, oh, I'm rooting
for them over Minnesota. Like I'm like, I'm okay. I
pretty much just say like take the wheel and just go,
oh my my, the big.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Development yelling and screaming, but I am I am, I
am delayed, So you're gonna get this from my I'm
watching it. Texas going for what should be Texas has
just missed the go ahead field goal.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
And FS do Miami wide right or wide right? That's
what we have right now.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
One of the best kickers in college football has missed
this cow.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
So we have.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
A hair by the way, yes, Bert Auburn, that is
a phenomenal head of hair. Minute thirty nine left, tied
up at twenty four piece in Airdalon State is going
to get the ball back with a timeout in their pocket,
needing just a field goal to get a victory into
advance into the CFP semi final. How about that?
Speaker 5 (28:18):
And you guys remember against Georgia in the SEC championship game,
didn't he miss two field goals? Yeah he's got great hair,
but he hasn't been great at his job lately the
last two games.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
So really quick back, really dependable regularly, So I know,
just being a smart but no.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
No, no, I love no, I love you your thousand percent.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
Right real quick, I'll go ahead, Sorry, no, go ahead, God,
I would just say back to Patrick real quick. Maybe
his resolution should be trying to whittle down his favorite
NFL team, just to one that you work on that.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Why do why don't we.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
Just say my my resolution is when I finally pick one. Yeah,
just pick one for once and for all anyway, Sorry
back to you, Jason.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
No, no, Patrick, by the way, for everybody. Actually, we
have a tie game.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Real quick, we have a tie game twenty four to
twenty four thirty five left Arizona State with the ball,
Sam Levit with a big run. We will keep you
updated on what could be our first true upset in
the college football Playoff in the meantime, patcheck your resolution.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Field seem so.
Speaker 6 (29:12):
For Seattle, resolution would be fix the offensive line you
like majorly and kind of the part two with that
is update the passing, so like, maybe finally get a
replacement for Gino Smith, but definitely need offensive to be better,
especially on the line. Needs to start there.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
So that's on my New Year's resolution.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
For my Minnesota Vikings, it would be one, keep Sam Darnald,
keep them probably on the short term leash see if
you can keep doing it. And then number two dethrowing
the Lions. I think that would be a pretty good resolution, I.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Will say, and I've said repeatedly on Yahoo Sports. I
believe the Vikings are going to franchise Sam Donald. I
think that makes the most sense to do it, really does.
There's no way he plays somewhere else at this point.
And look, if you're franchising me, get another year and
then you can figure it out. You can almost take
it year to year and do that if you want to.
But let's see kind of where that goes. I will
(30:04):
say I hear you on Geno, but I've had this
conversation with a lot of people and it comes back
to what figuring out we're talking about earlier, Like as
Raiders fans, I desperately know my favorite team needs a quarterback.
The thing I would ask you with Gino is when
you start to look at the other options available. Let's
presume for this sack of riestion, that Sam Donold gets
this franchise. You're talking about Geno versus Aaron Rodgers, or
(30:25):
Geno versus Roald Levis or or how Jones?
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Yeah who better?
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (30:30):
I mean this better options for this year.
Speaker 6 (30:32):
That's why I'm kind of focusing on Let's let's figure
out the offensive line first. We know that Gino's probably
not gonna be the long term, like you know, franchise guy,
but let's fix the line first. Maybe with his last
Geno's got one more year on his deal, fix the line,
see if he could do it. If not, then you
kind of go from there. It's not a good class
with quarterbacks on the free agents and draft wise, so
I do understand that, and.
Speaker 4 (30:54):
Maybe podcast third or fourth round and see if you
can someone who has some upside or some potential that
maybe you can put into your system for you were
or two. I think that's the move to go for.
But to try to blow it up and look for
a quarterback when it's not a very robust market, either
in free agency or in the draft, I think you're
better off to stay in status quo when it comes
to the quarterback position in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
No, that's I will say.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
If your favorite team loves should do or cam then
the one thing I go back to what the Bills
GM said a couple of years ago when it came
to trading up for Josh Allen. He said, look, if
you trade a king's ransom and it works, nobody will
care that you traded a king ransom. If you trade
the king's ransom and it doesn't work, going to be
fired anyway. But if you don't have a quarterback, you're
going to be fired, so you might as well just
(31:35):
go out there and take the risk, right So why
not take the risk of trading up? If you love
cam warders should dour standers. In this year's draft. As
it stands right now, the Patriots have.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
The first pick. That's a shoppable pick. This is not
last year.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
There is nothing and I have multiple people tell me
that the Raiders, for example, are offered. According to some reports,
I got three first rounders and two second rounders with
two minutes or sorry two Washington to move up for
Jade and Daniels, to which I would say, Washington said no,
thank you, and they were right right Like so, last year,
there was nothing you could do about the fact that
(32:09):
the top three quarterbacks were going to go to the
top three teams and there was nothing you could offer
them this year. If you really love camera shador not
my favorite flavor of ice cream to trade future assets for.
But if you do, then go trade your way up
and get somebody. The hard part this year is I
think everybody's going to have to realize that it's a
bad quarterback class, and free agency and the draft, which
means if your team is stuck at quarterback right now,
(32:31):
you're probably stuck your quarterback next year. And the hardest part,
figured to go back to your rebuild conversation is I
don't know if Antonio Pierce should still be the head coach.
I don't know if, for example, Brian Callahan is really
the right answer a coach for the Titans.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
What I do know is if you draft a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
My belief if you're drafting a quarterback for a rebuild
is you fire every person in that room before you
do it, and you hire every person in that room
with the one question, are you ready to develop said quarterback?
Speaker 3 (32:58):
So if you just you going all in on Shador.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
If that's where, for example, if the Raiders decide Tom
Brady comes in and decides, you know what, I think
Shador should be the next quarterback, great, then make sure
that the GM that you have in the building knows
how to speak Shador. Make sure that the coach knows
how to speak Shador. Make sure the offense is built
to that. Like, I think the problem with rebuilds is
everybody half ass is it. They hire a new coach
but not a new GM or a new GM and
(33:22):
not a new coach, and then they bring in like
weird coaching stats like the Bears, and what they did
with Caleb Williams was just stupid, right. So I think
the problem with rebuilds is that people are afraid to
rip the band aid off completely.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
My New Year's resolution for the Raiders.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Is to commit to a rebuild, rip the whole thing apart,
and make sure that every single person that walks in
the room speaks the same limit language on how you're
rebuilding it, and everybody has the same account.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
A built well.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
It sounds so simple, but so few teams do it.
It's just having one centralized vision you have. Look at
the San Francisco forty nine ers, which, by the way,
and as if Jed York needed to say, oh, these
guys are going to be back next year, meaning Kyle Shanahana,
John Lynch, of course they are. What are you talking
about the fact that was even a discussion that those
guys will leave is crazy to me.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
But those guys, please God fire them that we can
hire them.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
On thousand percent. But the fact that those guys were
brought in as a package deal now basically shinehand hired
Lynch and they kind of talk together and figure out,
here's the vision of our team, here's how we're gonna
build it, this is what we want. And they've been
able to be going lockstep since day one. I think
that's the best way to build an organization. And we
see too many teams where you hire a gentleman. Look,
the Raiders are a perfect example. Right now, they hired
(34:26):
Antonio Peers before they even hire Tom to LESCo. Now,
if they let go of Antonio Piers, is Tom Telesco
going to hire the coach? Is it going to be
Mark Davis and his list of advisors, including Tom Brady,
who hires the coach? How is that gonna go? To
your point? If you're gonna do a rebuild. I love
Tom to les Go. I know Tom to Let's go
cover the Chargers for years in LA. He's a great guy.
He's a great evaluator of talent. But you need to
make sure that everybody from the top of ownership all
(34:48):
the way down to the equipment managers know exactly what
the vision is for your team and knows what their
responsibilities are. And right now, and I think for over
the course of years, for the Raiders specifically, they just
haven't been run that way. So if they're gonna give
you six, I agree with you. Do a total tear down,
total rebuild, bring in a new GM, a new head coach.
Everybody has one shared vision of how they're gonna play,
who they're gonna draft, and what they want the vision
(35:09):
of their team to look like.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
A brutal hit near midfield stops Arizona States from being
able to convert to a first down. They wanted a
targeting on it. They did not get a targeting on it.
They have now punted the football, which means with fifty
seven seconds left on the clock, Quinn Ewers has the
chance to become a Texas legend. We'll let you know
how it plays out. We'll continue to cover the game
for you when we come back East. Kevin Figures. I'm
Jason fitz We're in for Doug Gottlieb on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
For the first time in expanded college football playoff.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
History, we have over time.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
The amazing hair of Bert Auburn couldn't help him get
the kick. For the second time in the last couple
of minutes of the game. He misses, this time the
doink off the left upright with what would have been
the game winning kick as time expired. Easy range for
that kicker, absolute collapse for him. Texas is now headed
(36:18):
to overtime with Arizona State.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
This game tied to twenty four to twenty four. A
game in the first half looked like it was going
to be controlled by Texas.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
In the second half, Arizona State has scratched and clawed,
and at this point, it's amazing how the narrative changes
in two hours.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Figure he's Kevin Figures, I'm Jason Fitz.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
We're in at the tire rack dot Com studios on
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio, and all
I keep thinking about brother is like when we started
this show, I started this by saying Texas is they're
in control, and you were like, I don't know, They're
leaving him in this game. At this point, two hours later,
it's clear that Arizona State has outplayed Texas.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
That's how much it's changed in two hours.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
And the irony of the entire situation. We also started
the jill talking about asdu and their kick issues and
how they've had kicking problems since midseason. They had an
open competition for kickers around mid October of the season.
They missed a couple of field goals early on, they
went fourth on fourth down because they had no faith
in their kicking situation. Meanwhile, Texas has one of the
most reliable kickers in the entire country and he just
(37:16):
missed two field goals that would have essentially won the
game for them, and we send this thing to overtime
and more camp Scataboo. Scatabul has a chance to submit
his legers. Can you imagine if scatabel ends up scoring
the game winning touchdown after all the smack he was
talking leading into this game and people saying Texas is
going to put it on you, you don't know what you're
talking about. This is real football, this is sec football.
If Skataboo puts it on him and scores the game winning, look,
(37:38):
he's already had a few phenomenal game already to put
the exclamation point on it. This will be phenomenal. This
is what college football play. This is what the playoff
is all about this right here, This is what we're
all looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Yeah, Cam at this point twenty six carries for one
hundred and thirty two yards in a touchdown, also threw
for a touchdown. And look, I started this off talking
about the fact that over simplify the college football playoff,
if you can run the ball and stop the run,
you will win in this game. So far, Arizona State
forty three carries for one hundred and eighty five yards.
That's an average of four point three yards per carry. Conversely,
(38:12):
Texas twenty nine carries for fifty four yards, an average
of one point nine with a long of seven yards.
Texas has not been able to run the ball at
all against Arizona State. Arizona State stea lin Figie a
lot bigger than they get credit for being. They've got
some big boys on there. Those big boys has shown up.
And this is this game now, at this point, is
going to go to overtime with all the momentum favoring
(38:34):
Arizona State.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
Yeah, and I don't know how you know, Texas, this
has to stick in your psyche. Well, look, and you're
going into overtime, so you know you know, you have
the short field. Everybody gets a possession. You know, if
you hit a fourth down situation. Do you even trust
your kicker even to make a chip shot field goal
at this point in time, I don't know if I do,
because at this point, no matter how great of a
kicker can be. Look at Justin Tucker earlier this year
when he essentially had his own version of the yips
(38:57):
and he could make a kick for about two and
a half three straight weeks. I mean, now you're dealing
with a college kid with on the biggest spotlight imaginable
in the playoff. I mean, this could be a very
tenuous situation for Texas right now.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Well, and the broadcast showed, you know, certainly we're on air,
so I have the broadcast muted. But the broadcast showed
before the attempt, the sark went up to Burt Auburn,
their kicker, and they were having a laugh and just
sort of like one of those moments you know coaches
haven't where he's like, hey man, I love you, I
know you're gonna make this kick. All the things the
coaches say didn't work, got the doink out of it, right,
So you're right, like even in that moment. Now you
(39:30):
got to wonder what the psyche of your kickers like,
and when you're talking college football overtime, that that can
be the difference. You've got two teams now with kicking
issues that are both desperately afraid of having to put
their kicker out there.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
So everybody just goes for two some jump, right, That's
what it is like. Everybody goes for it, or fourth down,
everybody goes for two because nobody has any faith in
their place kicker at this point. That's kind of way
you're not to do.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Yeah, exactly, Well, here's what I know.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
Fox Sports Radio will have you covered throughout the course
of all of the action today. Again we're in overtime
Texas and Arizona State, and then obviously the big news today,
the Sugar Bowl has been postponed to tomorrow after the
tragedies in the tragedy in New Orleans. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to everybody impacted by that. We appreciate
you letting us hang out and entertain you for a
(40:15):
couple hours. Happy New Years everybody. Thanks so much to
Patrick and Iowa, Sam Kevin Figures, Jason fitz We're out
