It's a Friday. You should be having a good day. Work?
(00:25):
Is it just about over for many of you? Midwest
to east coast, West coast, got a couple more hours?
Tend like you're doing something. It's a football Friday.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Today's Friday.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
It's friday. North Carolina play this weekend? But god?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Do right?
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Really interesting? Everybody will care? Week one? Week two? Nobody cares?
Hey can I? I This is unscripted and not that
our show is written, but we do kind of plan
out we're going to talk about and Dan, I want
to get to your your topic in a second. Something
we discussed because tonight you got charged taking on the
Chiefs in Brazil. We are all fans of the man
(01:07):
Rob Parker. Is that fair right, I'm we're fans of
the man.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Robs a great guy, great guy.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Okay. His of his signature takes, right of his signature
takes are the ones you're like, Rob Parker, like any
the guy who said, Okay, that's your signature take his
signature takes. I believe probably number one, definitely on his
(01:35):
Mount Rushmore is that Tom Brady was not the greatest
quarterback of all time, but the luckiest quarterback of all time.
Doesn't he call him the lope, the luckiest of all time?
Am I correct in saying that?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Guys?
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Okay. So he is openly rooting for Bill Belichick to fail.
He's made it a point in his radio show. That's
what his show essentially at times see and Kevin Washington
when he's like, Hey, I just want to I'm so
happy he lost. I want him to lose because he
wants to prove right that he's not. He's arrogant, not
(02:08):
really that good at coach. Without Tom Brady, he'd be nothing.
That goes completely counter to his signature take. If Tom
Brady's just lucky, well then Bill Belichick has to be good.
But if Bill Belichick was just lucky, to have Brady
then how does that actually work? Am I making sense?
Speaker 4 (02:30):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Okay, I mean obviously part of this is we know
too much. North Carolina takes on Charlotte, which used to
be North Carolina Charlotte. Now it's just Charlotte and their
thirteen and a half point favorites against the forty nine ers,
which didn't we have a discussion about how why they're
forty nine ers? Is that last week? Was that us
(02:53):
thought we did? I had that discussion with somebody, why
are they forty nine ers? But North Carolina goes to Charlotte,
and I think they play where the Panthers play in
Bank of America, and then they take on Charlotte, so
they'll win this week, and if they win this week,
people'll not mention it at all. But I just I
thought that was a contradictory to his signature take take
(03:18):
and call.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Them out on such.
Speaker 6 (03:20):
I'm sure he'll be challenged with that at some point
and then we'll get some kind of explanation.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
So I don't know how you can have it both ways.
How Brady can be when.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
It's your show, You can't, But how can you explain it?
I don't know that'd be great. I would love to
I would love to know that. Okay, tonight we have
Chargers Chiefs. Before we get to your take on it,
Dan Byer, you got a couple of Charger fans here, right,
but you also had a guy who picked the Chiefs
to win to go to the super Bowl. Okay, So
(03:50):
before again, before we get to that, let me just
state I don't think the Chiefs are that good. I
would love to see the Chiefs not get to the
super Bowl. I would love to see somebody new get there,
Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, or me, even our guy Herbie
or Joe Burrow get back to the super Bowl. I
would love to see that happen. But every year that
(04:11):
Pat Mahomes has been a starting quarterback, he's been at
minimum the AFC Championship Game. So it stands the reason
it's really really dumb to pick against Pat Mahomes and
Andy Reid when we have like a decade of data
that tells us if he's playing quarterback, they're going to
be in the AFC Championship Game. So when I say that,
(04:32):
that is my take emotion out of it, take any
analysis out of it, and just go with historical data
and do the best you can with it. That's where
I am on the Chiefs Okay, Jay Stu. I think
we both know that the Chargers are in a much
better place with Jim Harbaugh as their head coach, right
(04:54):
Like we both like, yeah, he'll figure it out eventually.
But they lost their starting left tackle, the best in
the league or one of the best, in Rashawn's Slater.
It's still it's year two, so it's still a work
in progress in terms of them changing the roster around.
Wide receiving Corps Lad McConkey is the best. You know,
you you know you bring back out of a legend
(05:15):
as well. I don't know where are you on the charge, Like,
what are your reasonable expectations as a Charger fan.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
I think that the Slater thing is is devastating. To
be honest, I hate it. I actually told Dan Bayer,
who's an Ohio state guy who hates that Jim Harbaugh
got away with what he did at Michigan, I said,
take solace in this. Karma has ways of coming back around,
and I think maybe the Slater injury is karma for
(05:44):
what Jim Harbaugh did at Michigan. Just my theory. I
can't prove it, but I'm thinking.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
I'm thinking Rashwan Slater getting hurt is karma for for
a no name coordinator going out and stealing signs.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
And not getting punished for it.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
They get punished for it, barely, barely. They have suspended
for games. They got punished for it.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Yeah, buyer disagrees, And I said, Dan, if.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
You can say, you can say the punishment wasn't severe
enough in your opinion, but please don't say they haven't
been punished for it. But everyone involved that we're aware
of has been punished somewhat severely.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Anyway.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Point of contention between the buyer and Gottwade.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Buyer's just, I mean, buyer completely ignores all of Ohio
states misgiving.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I just I just don't want Doug to get into
shouting fest twenty.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yeah, it's okay, okay, here's dog's talking loud.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Dogs talking, dog's talking loud.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Let's get to this. Is Dan Patrick on tonight's Chief
Chargers game.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
You have the Chiefs and the Chargers in Brazil. Now
here's the problem I have with this. I know we're
getting to you know, global expansion here, but the fact
that the Chargers in Chiefs, a divisional rivalry game is
going to be played in Brazil is malpractice. I mean,
that's terrible because that should be played in Los Angeles
(07:25):
or if it was going to be played in Kansas City.
This is a divisional game, and I don't think the
fans in Brazil were going to go, hey, we better
get an opening game, we better get a week one game.
I'm not anti international. What I am anti is a
divisional game we're going to export and it's week one.
(07:45):
You can't do that to the Chiefs and the Charger
fans this week seven and then you have a bye week.
If you want to do it that way, then I
think it's fair to all involved. You can still have
games there, but let's not have opening days or their
first week, their first game, a divisional game, and you're
going to play it in Brazil.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Last year was Packers, I mean Packers Eagles. It was
in Brazil on a Friday night, so same BAT time,
same BAT channel, same conference, different division, but it ended
up being a rematch in the playoffs, right, So I
do think that there are some very specific parts of
(08:29):
this matchup which makes it okay. And this is as
a Charger fan, what do we think the ratio is
in Sofi? Game was supposed to be played in Sofi?
Just see, how do you know? Because they're still playing
Chargers Chiefs in Kansas City. Okay, so this was a
Chargers home game. And the first thing is, if we're
honest with ourselves, the Chargers have to kind of do
(08:50):
everything they can to acquiesce to the league because without
the league, they wouldn't have the sweetheart deal of no
rent being in Los Angeles, tripling the value of the frame. Right,
they have a lot. There's some benefits to it, but
you're gonna lose a game. Okay, it sucks that you're
losing a Chief's home game. On the other hand, a
Chief's home game is full of Chiefs fans. I've been
(09:13):
to this game. It's three quarters red and maybe a
quarter of powder blue. You go to Brazil and there's
not a ton of local fans. It's a neutral side game.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
I actually think there's a world where you go you
really think that the Chargers are just as popular in
Brazil than than the Chiefs are.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
No, but again, it doesn't it's not like that of fans.
They don't like they it's not not the same. Do
you think it's the same level of passion. They're just
they wear the Mahomes jerseys because they've seen him win,
and they sing songs, likely because that's what you do
in other countries. But it's not the raucous chiefs kingdom atmosphere,
(09:56):
if you will. And I look, we we have exported,
specially to England and Germany, some dog poop games, right
like how many times? Like did we get the did
we get the Jaguars again? Bloody hell, we got to
Jaguars again. We're sending two good button teams down there,
(10:19):
good colors. Okay, Dann Byer, are you taking away?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
It's a much bigger story than just the Chargers don't
draw well at home because to what you're saying, I
think that travel is involved as well. Instead of sleeping
at home in your beds, not having a travel weekend.
The Chargers now have eight of those this year. Every
team in the AFC outside of the Chargers have nine
(10:42):
of those. So there, so they're they're at a disadvantage there,
maybe not every team, but I'll get to that in
a second. The NFL prides itself on this balanced schedule
so much so that we basically know fourteen of seventeen
(11:03):
opponents for every team for next year and guess what
the year after that and the year after that, because
they have a scheduling motto, a model where this division
plays that division, that division plays that division, and it
just goes on and on and on. So players make
sure that they're in a stadium, like Patrick Mahomes is
at least going to play in a game at Soldier
(11:24):
Field in Chicago at one point during what an eight
year cycle. That's kind of the goal of the NFL.
The problem is with the international series that you talk of, Doug,
is because there are five international games. Excuse me, there
are seven international games this year. Six of those will
(11:45):
take place in Germany in Europe, one in Germany, one
in Ireland, then you've got the London games, then we
have one in Madrid, and then we have the game
in Brazil. Of the six other games, five of those
are cross conference AFC against NFC Vikings and Steelers, Vikings
and Browns, Rams and Jaguars, Falcons and Colts, Commanders and Dolphins.
(12:07):
Those don't hurt you as much in the standings when
it comes to tiebreakers and other deals. The other game
is a battle of AFC teams in London between the
Broncos and Jets. But the last time that we've had
a divisional matchup he played in an international game was
in twenty twenty two with the Cardinals and forty nine Ers,
and the last time it happened in an international game
in Europe was twenty nineteen when the Panthers and Buccaneers
(12:29):
ended up playing a game. So the NFL has made
an effort to try not to have divisional games. And
the reason why I think it's such a problem, Doug,
is because the NFL, and this goes back to the
schedule rotation, wants to tell us that their schedule is fair.
They also want to tell us, Doug, that the division
is so important. Winning your division says so much. Winning
(12:51):
your division gives you a playoff berth and a home
game for the first round of the playoffs, so much
so that they can never get that changed, even this
past offseason with the rules Committee on the competition committee.
The owners want that valuable home game for winning your division,
Then why are you putting this game when it's so
(13:13):
valuable thousands and thousands of miles away, When it's a
clear benefit to Kansas City, and it's not a benefit
to the Chargers. Just because Kansas City gets to keep
their nine home games, they don't have to play eight
true road games. Now they get to play seven road games.
And that's the problem with it is it's it's not
(13:33):
whether the Chargers draw the Chiefs draw. It's the NFL
and what they're trying to tell us. They're telling us
that the winning the division matters, and it matters so
much that you're going to get a home game in
the first round of the playoffs. And we think it
matters so much that we're going to make Week eighteen
all division games. And Mike Carmen and I on our
I Want Your Flex podcast, little plug there. I've talked
(13:55):
about this for years. I mentioned earlier half the games
of Week eighteen don't even matter because teams are out
of it. So it's more of the messaging with the NFL.
And it's not that your points aren't valid, because I
think that they are in reasons and sticking up you know,
on why the NFL would do this. But the NFL
tells us one thing and then does another. And that's
my problem with it is this game does mean something
(14:17):
to the Chargers just to be able to make Kansas
City make a road trip and have the Chargers be
able to sleep in their own beds, I think is
a decent advantage and the Chargers don't have that advantage.
And so there are other teams that are giving up
home games this year in the AFC, but those opponents
are against NFC folks, except the Jets who have that
game against the Broncos. That's why I think it's tough
(14:40):
and also truly, the Chargers are one of the few
teams in the NFL rams Seahawks forty nine ers who
actually have the toughest time because of their location period
in travel when they have to go to the East Coast,
much more difficult for them to travel. So now you're
tape making them travel even more on a weekend that
they weren't supposed to. That's where I think that the
NFL is in a complete double standard and talking out
(15:03):
of both sides of their mouths.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Jay Stew, does it matter to you as a Charger fan?
Speaker 4 (15:08):
Yeah, it matters, It matters. I would take a hybrid
of everything that Mark Dominic said, Dan Patrick said, and
Dan Bayer just said it. Each of you all made
very compelling points that I think speak for the Charger
fan because there are like twelve of us. I think
maybe fifteen now because of Jim Harbaugh. So Doug's right
(15:31):
in that most Charger home games are neutral games. But
for everything Dan just said, I'm not even gonna do
it the disustice of reiterating it. I want to add
this point. I am the guy on this network who's
been saying I have no idea who the international game serves.
(15:51):
It doesn't serve the players, It doesn't serve the traditional
rights holders. To have this game on YouTube. It's got
to piss NBC, CBS or whoever off that they don't
have a Chargers Chiefs game to play. And it certainly
doesn't serve us the fan. We have to go out
of our way to watch it on some streaming network.
It puts a little bit more money into rich people's pockets,
(16:14):
that's all it does. That's what kind of pisses me off.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
How much did they get for the YouTube game? Do
we know?
Speaker 4 (16:25):
I don't know a billion?
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Does anybody know?
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I don't have it offhand. I'm gonna look it up,
and I know Sam probably will too.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
I would say who does it serve. I mean, first
thing is that it serves all the teams in the
NFL because this is another network. It's in terms of business,
it's genius. I'm not disagreeing with you, but you missed
you missed the big element. Okay. The first thing is
that anytime, this is where Goodell is going to go
(16:56):
down as historically the greatest commissioner in the history of sports,
and Adam Silver's trying to copy it. If we really
get down to it, it's how many networks can you
get on? They're on every network, They're on Amazon, they're
on Netflix, and now they're on YouTube. Like that's incredible.
And so when you get when you explore different networks
(17:16):
and different opportunities, that's new money, that's not found new money,
and it goes into all the teams. And then yeah,
I mean, like I think they the game is popular
and they're trying to but bit by bit kind of
educate the world on what this game looks like, to
build it into a more of a global game as
(17:37):
baseball has tried, but they're kind of limited to Japan
and Korea doesn't really seem to work elsewhere, right, Basketball
wants to do it as well, like we're kind of
tapped out here and they're tapping into new markets. So
I think from a business standpoint, it's brilliant who it serves.
It does serve Mahomes, it does serve Herbert, because it does.
They are national names that slowly become international names. But
(18:01):
for the most part, Yeah, all these players at the
end of it, just like we tell them, like, hey,
you don't like playing was it you like playing Thursday games?
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Great?
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Give back that money that's made because Amazon wants to
buy Thursday night games. So everybody gets rich because of it.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
So one other point to this, and I'm curious to
see what the NFL does, Like this game has been
played in Week one. I think because of the significant
travel and what it takes to hold the game in Brazil.
It feels like they have a better path with Europe
and that travel. So this was brought up this week
that the NFL will not be playing a Friday game
(18:38):
next season because of the Sports Broadcasting Act of nineteen
sixty one, saying that they can only hold Friday night
games if Labor Day is early enough on the calendar.
Next year, that will not be the case this year,
we had it the earliest that it can be with
Labor Day being September one, So these past two years,
the NFL has been able to get away with it.
It's also because of that travel, Doug. I think they
(19:00):
have a difficult time putting it into the schedule where
everything else is. So that's why they've allowed this extended
weekend for the Packers and Eagles. Last year, Remember the
Eagles played a Monday night game then against the Falcons
in Week two, so they had an extra day to
prepare for that. I'm curious to see what they do
(19:20):
next year with this game because they're not going to
have the ability to put it in Week one no
matter who ends up playing in that game.

he joins us now on the Doug Ottleig Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Jared, let's get after it with some
of these games. Oklahoma State Oregon. Let me get this straight.
Oregon has gobs and gobs of money. They've won lots
(20:27):
of football games, so we're supposed to believe. I watched
Joel Klatt. He has some rant about, Oh, Mike Gundhy
poked the bear. They're supposed to be mad because Mike
Gunny's like, they got a lot of money and they're
really good. I helped me out the numbers. Twenty eight
and a half.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
That's a big number.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
It is massive number. I think the narrative only goes
so far right. And Mike Gundy's done a good job
over the years, you know, motivating his team in his way.
I don't think it translates too much to organ side.
I just think Organ's a really good football team and
they kind of flew under the radar last week. They
beat Montana State really hard, doubled them up in yards
(21:05):
per play, and that's a really good Montana State team.
Were undefeated in the FCS last year. We don't know
how good Dante more is just yet. He looked comfortable
last week over seventy percent completion rate, almost ten yards
per attempt. Again, Montana kind of played this soft zone
defense and he just kind of took what they gave him.
I was impressed watching More go through multiple aggressions. That's
always what I look for with a young quarterback starting
(21:27):
his first game. If you look to one side of
the field and your first read is not there, are
you able to click back to the other side and
find an open receiver on the backside.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Of the Reid?
Speaker 5 (21:35):
And he was able to do that pretty effectively. I
do think the Oregon defensive line is formidable. I love
this kid, Amari Washington space heed or three hundred and
twenty pounds. I think this is gonna make Oregon, not
only this week, but in general, a very difficult team
to run on. I think two different sides of Oregon
are going to be true this year, Doug. I think
at home they're very young football team. They played twenty
(21:56):
first year players last week, so they're very young again
in a experience football team. They're gonna be better in the
home environments. I think on the road, like when they
go to Penn State in a couple of weeks, they
might be a little bit shaky. But this is an
Oklahoma State team. I didn't like what I saw on
the offensive line last week against UT Martin. They let
the Skyhawks generate a twenty nine percent stuff rate. That
(22:16):
means that the offensive line was a little bit Swiss cheesy.
And if that's the case against UT Martin, we'll see
what they do against Oregon. Also, backup quarterback. This week,
we saw the starter get injured. Zane Flores had to
come in to replace hass Henji. I butchered that name,
but that's how you pronounced him. He broke his foot
(22:36):
in the game.
Speaker 7 (22:36):
So we'll see.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
I think Flores will be a little bit flustered in
the road environment. I do think I would lean Oregon,
but you're right, big whopper of a number, and clearly
my Gundy's fired up for this one.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Let's go back to Oklahoma Norman. Oklahoma Sooners are a
four and a half point favorite totals forty four and
a half against Michigan. You want to talk about a
highly touted freshman Michigan's starting quarterback is just that where
people are starting to talk about Bryce Underwood and unbelievable things.
What do you like in that game?
Speaker 5 (23:07):
People need to start talking about Bryce Underwood. Doug and
we talked a lot about archmanding over the summer, generational
talent bo blah blah blah. I think Bryce Underwood when
we look back on this college football summer, we will say, Wow,
we were giving a lot of love to Arch and
we weren't kind of letting this Bryce Underwood get fly
under the radar. Incredible talent, elite throwing motion kind of
(23:27):
reminds me of CJ. Stroud, quick delivery, no wasted movement,
great mechanics, and he can rip the football. His only
weakness is an experience. I think that is something that
probably will factor into this game on the road against
a very tough SEC caliber defense. I know Oklahoma's offense,
We've talked a lot about that. I'll get to them
in a minute, but I do think the Oklahoma defense
(23:48):
is legit one of the best units in the SEC,
and we know Venables is a great defensive coach. The
fascinating match up here. I don't think Bryce Underwood's going
to have an overly huge amount of success this week.
I think they're gonna keep it really simple, and I think,
you know, the crowd and just the environment might play
a factor in some jitters. But really everyone's been talking
about John Mttier in this Oklahoma offense. I did not
(24:09):
like what I saw last week. Missed a lot of
Throw's arm side, including the interception. He's floating in the pocket.
He does look comfortable in the system, right, this is
second year in the system with our buckle, But I
think he's just a little bit off with his mechanics.
And what do we know about Michigan's defense, right, this
is year two of a Wink Martindale defense. They play
a lot of zone coverage. They're gonna drop back, and
(24:30):
they are gonna make Oklahoma's offense really find those holes.
I think the front seven for Michigan can stop the
run without committing extra guys in the box, and they're
gonna make Matier go dink and dunk ten plays down
the field without making a mistake. But if your mechanics
are not good, I think eventually you're gonna make a mistake.
This smells like an undergame all the way. First half
(24:50):
under for sure, Michigan. If Underwood can kind of overcome
some of those jitters. I think the Wolverines are a
very live dog here, but I don't necessarily trust a
freshman quarterback making his first start.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
On the road.
Speaker 5 (25:01):
So I think under the total is the best play here.
I'm seeing forty four in the market, but the first
half under, I think is really a good bet.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Okay, let's go to a couple other big games of
the weekend. The Syhawk is ioa. Sam can't contain himself.
He's just so exciting, right, just so excited. This one's
in Ames, it's on Fox. He got big noon. Is
there the line as of right now? Where's my line?
(25:31):
Where's where'd that go? Okay, it's kind of flowing around
three three? I got three and a half, three and
a half, forty three and a half is the is
the number? What do you think?
Speaker 5 (25:39):
Yeah? I think under has been the vibe in this
series now to be fair, So fifteen and four, that's
what the under is is since two thousand and five
in this series, but the last three years, again the
totals have been comically low, right around thirty seven. Now
we're seeing in the you know, low forties, so you're
getting a little bit of an upgrade. I think Iowa
States look good in their first two games, not great.
(26:02):
The Kansas State game was fluky. They got out gained,
they had the weird turnover. Kansas State's best running back
got hurt on the putt return, you know, on the muff,
So I don't want to over react to that result.
And Kamari Molten for Iowa, their best running backs out,
so you got the backup throw Washington. Including the fifteen
carries last week against all Benny, this kid has thirty
(26:23):
six career carries. So I'm a little concerned about the
Iowa run game, and we know that's their bread and butter.
Mark Gronowski, you want to talk about jitters. I know
arch Maning looked a little jittery last week. Mark Gronowski
eight for fifteen, thirty six yards. This is a kid
that's had a ton of success at the FCS level.
He admitted after the game he was a little nervous.
That's that line looked more.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
That was more.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
That was really nerves. We'll see if he can settle
in a little bit, because we have seen again you're
kind of bouncing around the number right now. It was three,
then three and a half, an hour back to three.
So I saw a little bit of love for Iowa
State early. Typically when a line is three and a half,
you look to the favorite. Line is two and a half,
you look to the dog. So again, right around that
number of three, I don't think there's much value in
(27:04):
the side, Doug. I would say under again, fifteen and
four games have gone you know, fifty nine to nineteen
have gone under since oh five, So I think that
there's gonna be a low scoring game. Both teams are
gonna run it, and these games typically are played pretty
close to the best.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Baptists versus the Methodists in Highland Park in Texas, Baylor
taking on SMU. I thought Baylor got pushed around by
Auburn last week, but now they go down and take
on SMU. Different club. SMU, of course, off of their
ACC Championship regular season championship, two and a half point
favorites and the totals much higher. At sixty three and
a half.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Yeah, I'm a little worried about SMU. Jordan Hudson, their
top receiver looks like he's gonna be out tomorrow. That's
a huge loss. Again, this is an SMU team that
lost a ton of starters. I know Kevin Jennings is
back and he's fantastic, but they lost nine starters on defense,
their top running back on offense, multiple starting receivers, and
now their best receiver who's still around, Jordan Hudson's not
gonna play. I thought Baylor like it was a definitely
(28:00):
got pushed around. The running game, especially the quarterback. Run
game was very effective. But here's the rub Auburn, and
we talked about it last week. An elite trio of
wide receivers and Dave Randa backed off the line of
scrimmage because he didn't want to get burned. So what happens, Well,
now you're vulnerable in the run game. Despite that, Baylor
actually out gained Auburn yards per play six point eight
(28:21):
to five point eight, and they didn't commit a turnover.
If you told me Baylor was gonna be plus one
net yards per play and not commit a turnover, I'd say,
they're pretty live to win that game, but they lost
by two scores kickoff turn for a touchdown, they struggled
in the red zone. I think the market probably overreacted
a little bit to that Auburn win because I do
think Baylor was live in the game and they just
didn't have things go their way, especially in the red zone.
(28:43):
And again with SMU coming off of what I think
was an average performance last week and now they're losing.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
Their best receiver. I feel like Dave.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Randa, I saw a three in the market with Baylor
catching three points. If you can find Baylor plus three,
and I just bet it, like thirty minutes ago before
I opped on air. I think that's a fantastic bet.
But SMU's got that moxie and they've got their quarterback,
so this is gonna be a fun game. I think
it's like the iron skillet or some kind of weird,
you know, frying pan that they give out at the
(29:12):
end of this game. So it's gonna have some juice
to it. But I think at three I would take Baylor.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Okay, last one here, Doug Gottlieb shout Fox Sports Radio, Oh,
what do you think of Illinois? And Duke Duke's a
two and a half point dog at home to Illinois.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Yeah, how about many This is a many DZ special
right here?
Speaker 2 (29:32):
Dog?
Speaker 5 (29:32):
How about this line, Manny Diaz nine and oh against
the spread as an underdog of seven points or less
at Duke, that's pretty impressive.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
Four and oh.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
Last year he had outright wins over VOTEC NC State,
UNC Northwestern as a dog of between one and a
half and three and a half. And that's what the
line is here in this game. This is kind of
a fishy line, right. You see a top fifteen ranking
next to Illinois and you can bet him minus two
and a half at Duke. Duke's a basketball school, right,
But this is why you pay Darian Men's a ten
(30:03):
million over two years for this type of game. I
think the Duke defense is good enough to keep Luke
Altmeyern check last year. This is a defense that excelled
against the run less than four yards per carry allowed
on the ground. We know Illinois is a run first team.
Brett Bielima loves to play bully ball. They did it
last week thirty four rushes to twenty five passes. I
know it was Western Illinois but this is a very
(30:24):
good and talented Illinois backfield. That is what they're going
to try to establish. First. Altmeyer also loves to scramble.
I like this Duke offense a little bit. Jarquez Moore's
back at running back. You've got Cooper Barkate. How about
this the Harvard transfer. Of course, Duke gets a kid
from Harvard flashed at receiver. So you got a receiver
and a running back that can move a little bit.
I like the quarterback mensa. I don't think the Alyni
(30:44):
defense has been tested yet. Here's the matchup to watch.
This Duke secondary is much better than you think preseason
All American Chandler Rivers. He's one corner Kamari Robinson in
his third years on the other side, and Illinois has
this rising star at receiver Hank Betty at a fantastic
double move Touchdow last week five for a bucko eighty
flash in the bowl game against South Carolina as well.
This is the matchup within the matchup. We know Duke
(31:06):
can stop the run, but can Illinois threatened vertical and
back that Duke defense off the line of scrimmage a
little bit. I kind of think the corners on an
island are gonna win here, and I think Duke pulls
this upset off. I am not high on Illinois this year.
I was not buying the hype. I don't think the
market is giving them any respect in this matchup either.
So I will take the two and a half points
and I'll give you one better. I'll say money line.
Duke on a big upset, not a big upset, an
(31:28):
upset on Saturday down there on Tobacco Road.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
Wow, there you go. We ended off with a big one,
end off with a big one with Duke. I love
Duke pulling off the upsot. He's Jared Smith, Fox Sports

(32:44):
shall we. So we do this every Friday. We pick
a game that we would swear by if you had
your last dollar. This is how you can make too.
It's called the Gambler. Let's start with Jason Stewart with
the famous Jays Dow Team parlay.
Speaker 7 (33:00):
Thank you dog.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
I'll take it from here. I need you guys to
rush to the gambling booth. Rush over there right now,
a gambling Windows Sports gambling window, betting window, because these
are these games are happening right away really quick. Louisville,
they they're hosting James Madison tonight, Louisville. James Madison, one
(33:24):
of the game, one of my favorite fathers.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
Nobody got that one signature game, James Madison signature. Okay anyway,
Oh yeah, that's a constitutional declaration of independence.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Rush God, Sorry, very next, Louisville is hosting James Madison
and then Maryland is hosting Northern Illinois. I'm gonna pick
both the dogs here for my Jay's Jay's two team parlay.
I think Northern Illinois take the sixteen and a half
at the at Maryland Terps and then take James Madison
(33:58):
with fourteen and a half a Louisville and just a
quick memo to Louisville fans, Yeah, Carrie Rhodes is not
walking through the door. He's hosting his show with Dan
Byron Sunday. He's not gonna be walking through that door.
James Madison to Northern Illinois and thank me on Monday.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
Uh damn byer Larry walking through that Uh It's great
to hear it again.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
I'll tell you what. Throughout the week I really like
the Giants against the Commanders, and Doug we got some
bad news today if you're on the side of the Giants,
Andrew Thomas, their left tackle is considered doubtful to play.
Malik Nighbors expected to go for the Giants, but that's
a pretty big blow. He's really good tackle and the
Giants on their offensive line, he's by far the strongest
piece they have, and I thought that they could do
(34:47):
really well without Washington, without Washington generating a great pass rush.
So while I was about to make the Giants to
win the game, we're not gonna go as far. We're
gonna just say the Giants cover plus six and a
half right now against Washington. And Giants, though cover that number,
played some tight affairs with the Commanders last year, I
expect more of the same in Week one.
Speaker 4 (35:09):
No wind run.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
I'm going with a little parlay lil two team parlay
of the NFL. Tonight, I need Bolts take on the
Kansas City Chiefs, and right now it's at three. It
was three and a half. I really liked the Bolts,
but like the Bolts a kicker obviously don't like the
adjustments to the offensive line with Slater going down, but
they'll be okay. I think the Chargers win straight up.
(35:34):
Now double it up with Pittsburgh going into the Jets,
right teams essentially swap quarterbacks from last year. Does anybody
think Justin Fields is a better quarterback than Aaron Rodgers?
Speaker 3 (35:45):
Now?
Speaker 1 (35:46):
I think Cam Herward plays. He was complaining today about
being able to feed his kids with his one hundred
and fifty four million dollars he's made in his NFL career.
But I got Pittsburgh and the Chargers put me in
the bucks.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
You're welcome.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
Let's go to you there.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
I was saym take it for what it's worth here
with the Sye Hawk game, coming from someone who attended
the University of Iowa. But listen, a couple of things
that Jared Smith did not mention. The road team is one,
I believe that the last five this is a name.
So I'm taking the Hawkeyes to cover that three and
a half and win this game outright. Another thing that
(36:20):
Jared did not mention is that Iowa's running attack, despite
missing Kamari Moulton, put up over three hundred yards rushing.
They have one of the better offensive lines in the country,
So I will be taking the Hawkeyes to win that
game outright as a three year three and a half point.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Doll okay, so James Madison and who ja.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
Stu Northern Illinois.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
The Huskies soon to be a basketball and non football
member of the Horizon League. And then byer you got who.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
I got the Giants, and I got the Chargers and
the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Yeah, there we go. You know what we gotta do?
I think we got to sing? Can we get to
the last part there?
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Whin the fold wold when the walk away? The bad tone.
Speaker 8 (37:12):
Money Money Team?
Speaker 1 (37:27):
All Right? Check us out on YouTube, uh at Doug
got At backslash YouTube dot com, slash at Doug Gottlieb Show,

those picks, You'll make some money. Uh Jays two team
