The super talented Dan Buyer just updated us. The score
continues to be fifty five thirty six. The only news
was that Steve Kerr felt like he gave it to
some pressure. I'm sure he planned on playing Jason Tatum.

(00:43):
I don't know if you plan on starting Jason Tatum,
but he started him.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
He's fine.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Second group really extended the lead, got up to twenty,
and it's nineteen right now as we start the second
half or the third quarter if you will in Paris, France.
But listen it's a Wednesday, and every Wednesday is a
hump day. It's the middle of the week, the middle
of the show, the middle of the day. We play

(01:08):
the Midway.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
He's not getting.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It's time for the Midway.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Okay, So here's how the midway usually works. We got
a group text throw out ideas and Sam went into
a long dissertation. And as you all know, I have ADHD.
That's a long ass text. At least Sam is honest
enough with us to say he's a long texture, which
is fine. But the basic premise of it, I believe

(01:42):
is that hey, the NBA, the NFL preseason is obsolete, right,
It's worse and worse, worse and worse and worse.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Correct.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Absolutely, And by the way, we are all discussing this
during the break. Much more annoying being the eight texts
in one to two minutes guy versus the long text guy,
because if your if your phone is buzzing, you know,
eight to ten times in two minutes, like, just get
it all out in one or two texts?

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Do you have? What's that?

Speaker 5 (02:13):
I get? My sister has one of those tendencies where
I'll go away from my phone for a while and
I'll arrive to twenty text messages and I'll be like,
who the heck has been texting me? It's my sister,
And then it's.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Like, can't wait for a response.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
It's the most random piling on word sentences for twenty
text messages.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
You know.

Speaker 6 (02:34):
The funny thing is is when we have this group chat,
I feel seventy five percent of the group chats are
from Sam yep, and then about I don't know, fifteen
percent from Jason, and then about ten percent from Doug.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Well, hold on, now, Jason is usually the instigator of
the topic and then you go.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
But you can instigate me.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
I can go.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Overboard and to vote, you know, my critical thesis to
whatever we're talking about.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah, Dan just takes all in and laughs at us.

Speaker 6 (03:05):
I I just I hate texting. And I know it's
probably my age. I'm probably an old guy.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
I just too, I'm just here. I am. Yeah, it's
like a compulsion.

Speaker 6 (03:15):
It's let's share of the last ten texts Sam Sam, Sam, Jason, Jason,
Doug Sam, Dog Sam Sam Sam.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
That's that's not fair sample size there, Dan, come on, go.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Back to previous to that.

Speaker 6 (03:32):
Dan, it's Jason, Sam Sam, Jason, Sam, Sam, Jason, I think.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Keep going as far as camphear.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
There was a time where I didn't say anything and
you guys just had a conversation amongst the three of you.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
But that was not recent.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
There is there is a text Shan that doesn't include you.
That's true.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Oh okay, yeah, stuff you don't want me to know.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Now, you know why?

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Yeah, about thirty minutes About thirty minutes ago, I needed
to let the listeners know on the on this one though,
there's a pet peeve of mine too that Sam does
you know? Thirty minutes ago, Doug was like, I wonder
how many people have hit Grand slams as our first
home run in the major leagues.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
So I went on chat.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Because Jackson, Because Jackson Holiday did that today.

Speaker 5 (04:18):
Okay, I went on chat GPD and they they told
me a ton of people have done it, but Joe
DiMaggio did it. That's pretty cool. That's good company for Jackson.
So I put it on the chat hoping that you
might be able to use it on the air. I
was providing content for air, and then Sam wrote a
massive text message about something to Texo to totally drown

(04:40):
out nontent.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Idem I am aware of that where you send something good,
good content, a joke or something to a group text,
and then somebody just immediately throws in something completely unrelated
and you're like, now all the attention is off that
good work I just did, and that's what that's what's
that's what Jason's e complaining about.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
I love that we've used six minutes. Just pile on
me and it's.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
No, it's been great.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
It's been I'm enjoying it. You take it well, you
take your your champ. Okay, so you think it's irrelevant,
I'll allow you to make your point, and then we'll
all make our points on other things we think are
irrelevant in sports.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Is that fair? Is that's okay?

Speaker 6 (05:22):
Or is it NFL training camps? Is that our preseason?
Was that the specific? Or it's all around sports?

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Well?

Speaker 1 (05:28):
His was NFL training camps. And I thought our way,
we could either discuss what he has to say or
have our own irrelevant gotcha things that happen in sports, Dan,
which you prefer.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I had an irrelevant thing because Jason.

Speaker 6 (05:43):
Jason's point was like, let's talk about the top storylines,
and I said, I've got some least interesting storylines.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
And Jess I love that one too.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
We would love it that that was a lot better.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Okay, so let's stick with the NFL and and and Sam.
You believe the NFL's preseason is uninteresting and should be
essentially deleted.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yes, we'll stick with the irrelevance train of thought here.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, these are just.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
It's just an excuse to open up the.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Stadium doors for you know, a couple extra times, you know,
because you have to pay for these preseason games with
your standard season ticket package. Uh, these are players, We
don't recognize, these are players. It's just not good quality football.
We a part of watching football I feel like is
the NFL is so elite because of the name recognition
and that coincides with the quality of play. We don't

(06:34):
know who these guys are, no offense, what they're playing
at like Saginaw State and you know Eastern Tennessee Tech
and you know Panera Bread State, as Coln likes to say. So,
you know, not that they aren't great athletes and they're
they are trying to make the roster, but a lot
of times these preseason games don't mean Diddley squad for
making the roster or not.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Like a guy could have a fumble.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
A quarterback could have three picks and he still might
make the roster, or he might min It's just has
no bearing on what they're actually doing in terms of
evaluating talent. So I don't know what is A preseason
game is a step up from just going to a
practice and watching because at least you're watching some of
the A and B squad, you're watching the ones and
the twos face off against each other. And these preseason

(07:16):
games you're not. You're watching these unknown players and you're going,
you know, nineteen thirteen, we're twenty nine to eleven, like
just weird scores. It's not good quality football, and it's
and if you don't know who's playing, then it's like
why don't you just go, you know, watch a minor
league baseball game instead?

Speaker 6 (07:34):
At least they're a team. At least they know who's
on the rock. Can I give Sam some advice? And
I'm not trying to pile out. I'm actually serious about
this because I don't disagree with you for what you're saying,
but if you'd allow me, yes, some things just aren't
for you.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Sure, sure you know.

Speaker 6 (07:48):
And that's and that's the thing that I've actually learned
about preseason because you talk to these football heads, they
love it.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Like you talked to our buddy Busted Brooks.

Speaker 6 (07:57):
Bucky Brooks loves this stuff, loves to see guys and
how they're working.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Because he's a recruiter, he was a recruiter, and but
he's also a football guy.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
So there is like a small So that's what I'm
just saying, is like this is not it's just not
for you, Like this is not your thing. There are
people who find extreme value into it, into it, whether
it be teams or whether it be some football fans,
whether it be fans who maybe aren't able to afford
to go to a regular season game that they can
at least get their kids inside the stadium to maybe
see like there's value in all of that.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
It's just that the preseason games just may not be
for you.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
But if we're watching these games to see it as
like a pipeline to the active roster when the season starts,
if that's if that doesn't exist, and like, yeah, you
could be like Bucky, and you could you could be
like I want to get to know all these guys
and you know, really run down the roster, every single
player and what his background is. That's great, but I
feel like that's a tiny little sliver for the rest

(08:49):
of us. We're just watching this like I wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Say, like, yeah, I mean listen. I went to.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
I'll soften a little bit on this in that I
love football, especially college football. Like I feel like Dan
and I our kindred spirits and our true love and
passion for college football. So when I went to Packers practice,
went to the Bear's practice the other day, like watching
all these guys that I saw play in college, like, ooh,
I'm trying to identify. I remember what college is, but
now it's like multiple colleges as well. But the preseason, it's.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Just I I.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
You just don't play guys like you don't play anybody
of substance.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Why should I watch?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
That's okay, Yeah, that's where they're following out for me,
the starters.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
So Dan, what are your other irrelevant? I have my
own things that are relevant within the NFL. What are
yours the other irrelevant?

Speaker 6 (09:36):
You know, it's funny. I'm gonna call him our buddy.
I know he's more your buddy than ours, but I
consider him a friend. Brandon Christal covering the Broncos out
of Denver sent out a tweet today and actually forgot
what Brandon actually was tweeting about, but made a passing
line joking about nothing's happening with the Denver Broncos. Their
quarterback decision completely irrelevant, No one cares, and it's got

(09:59):
bo Nixon's that Wilson in it. Like there's a like
there's a quarterback situation in the National Football League that
is up in the air, and last year I felt
like it was kind of the Buccaneers a little bit,
but Baker Mayfield still like had a name with it,
and Baker ended up being beating out Kyle Trask as
the starter. But we don't know who the starter is
in Denver. There's a first round pick involved, there's a

(10:20):
guy who we you know, have trashed over the last
five seasons, and it's a team that's moving away from
Russell Wilson for his tenure there because Sean Payton's not
the head coach. And I don't think anybody outside of
the Mile High City cares one iota who the Denver
Broncos quarterback is.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
I agree with you, but again, part of it is
part of it, Like Brandon's just trying to do his job, right.
I mean, we you know, but I.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Was actually supporting Brandon in imparts of like, yeah, dude,
I'm with you because I don't think that we care
even and he's he's in Denver and it's maybe feeling
the same sort of thing. So no, it was a
It's not not a knock at him at all. It
was more of a of a tip of the cap tool.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Here's here's my irrelevant storyline. Like again, guys who are
under contract and holding out and like, I just.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
I don't know. It just wears me out.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
It's like the CD LAMB back and forth, you know,
saying he was low ball and the Cowboys are like
he didn't actually want a contract extension last year, Like wait, what,
I just you know, And then we're trying to read
Brandon a Yuckschuk shows up at practice and he dabs
up you know, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, and we
try and read that into Okay, wait, what does that mean?

(11:36):
Does that mean that he's he signed a deal? Does
that mean that he's agreed to play on this last contract?
Is what exactly does that mean? I just I don't
know the inner workings of people's contracts when they're under contract.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
I don't care, and I don't. I just don't care
that much about I don't.

Speaker 6 (11:55):
Should give a quick update Sealesu Danus closed the gap
a little bit on t USA sixty five point fifty
two now four minutes.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
To go in the third quarter.

Speaker 6 (12:04):
No Midwes also dan o't scoring the Americans sixteen to
ten so far in this third quarter.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Good jess min Chase do most irrelevant thing about the
NFL right now?

Speaker 5 (12:17):
I like, the the most irrelevant thing I think in
maybe of all sports right now, I think is the
eighteen game schedule talk.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
I think that.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
Anything that can't happen until what twenty twenty five is
completely unnecessary to talk about the eighteen game schedule. Seems
like it's going to be imminent, but I'm not concerned
about it whatsoever, and it can't impact this this current season,
So that storyline is definitely petered out for me. And

(12:51):
this Minnesota Vikings situation, there seems to be a lot
of energy towards trying to make JJ McCarthy the quarterback
in Minnesota, and he's obviously not ready, but it's not
very interesting. He wasn't he wasn't a very good college
quarterback as far as I was concerned. And uh, Sam
Donald at the very least has games underneath his belt.

(13:15):
He's he's relevant, he's a he's a pro, and I'm
guessing he'll just get the nod this season until McCarthy
could get better.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
Now, I mean, you guys know me. I mean, apparently
Colin is another stockholder. I'm like, I always think I'm
the lone stockholder in Sam Donald LLC. Because I'm still
a believer and I feel like if he gets a
chance with a good team for all entire season, he
can make it sing. But again that's maybe that's a
pipe dream. I don't know, as he's just a placeholder
for JJ McCarthy.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
But yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
Think the like I think relevant storylines are kickoffs. I
could be dumb here and Dan this is maybe you're
me and you are the same. Like when they changed
the the field goal rule an extra point rule, I
thought that was gigantic. It's turned out to be I believe,
the biggest rule change in the history of the sport

(14:05):
in terms of points. And I mean you go from
a ninety nine point nine percent make to now in
the load to mid nineties, that's.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
A huge change.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
I think this kickoff rule is gigantic, whereas so much
of the other stuff we talk about has no effect
on the actual game plan.

Speaker 6 (14:24):
I love the talk on the extra point because I
think there's also a couple of things. And yeah, I
don't think you're necessarily wrong with that. The extra point
when it changed, if you think back in the day,
it gave us an extra thirty seconds to go and
go to the bathroom or get a drink or whatever
in a day where there wasn't pausing the game and
stopping the game so your.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Team scores, you could go and use that.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
Thirty seconds to do whatever, because then they would just
go to commercial right afterwards. That is no longer a
given plus now and it's been around in the NFL
for a while, But there was a time when there
was no two point conversion, and now the two point conversion,
with the lack of guarantee on the extra point, the
two point conversion has become so much more of a play.

(15:08):
So to your point of that being the biggest rule change, yeah,
because and the domino effects of it are pretty stark
as well.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Can we talk about this new technology the Hawkeye tech.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Sure, I think Dad's.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Got some update on that. I just had one question,
are there.

Speaker 5 (15:26):
Any updates on the hawk tula ie technology?

Speaker 2 (15:32):
How long you've been sitting on that one?

Speaker 1 (15:34):
As soon as you saw the Hawkeye, you're like, oh,
I like a hawk time, and I can. I can
figure out a line. You can figure out a hawk
to a line.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
He sat on it too long?

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Because hat Tua has exited stage left, nobody cares.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
I disagree. I disagree, Well, I'm over.

Speaker 6 (15:49):
I've said it here on Fox Sports Radio that I
thought that the NFL should have gotten the deal with
like Johnsonville and use sausage links instead of chain links
for their yardage markers. Like that would have been great,
just rolling out ten yards of sausage on the field,
and it would be a great way to market it.
But with this technology, you would no longer need the

(16:10):
chain gain to go out and measure the spot by
the referee. It's not a chip and a football sort
of thing. It's just where the referee puts it. And
instead of calling an officials timeout and bringing the chains
out and having the measurement, you would have it done
by technology. So I am fine with it and the

(16:31):
good thing about is we see it in tennis, and
I think one of the great things about tennis is
the drama that it builds when they do the zoom.
There is a lot of drama in the pulling of
the chains and whether someone gets a first down or not.
You could bring that drama to the video board and
TV if you do it like tennis does. So I
actually think this is a good thing with the NFL,

(16:53):
but not going too far with technology.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
Yeah, can I just say that the chain link thing
has like we call football a game of inches, but
with measuring down in distance the inches, the game of
inches is the margin of error because you know, it's
just it's a farce, like with guys measure and it's
like the nose of a football, like it's this hawkeye
technology really going to fix anything?

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Yeah, a little, But at the spot of the we
get bad spots all the time.

Speaker 6 (17:20):
That matter about the spot. The spot is separate spot. Okay,
So but you're you're yeah, yes, and you're still gonna
get bad spots. You're not wasting the time to measure
if that bad spot was a first down or not.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Guys, I was I'm really going to miss those chain
gang guys getting bowled over by players on the sideline.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
You know, that's what I'm going to miss the most
broken hips and blown a c ls. I'm sure they
won't miss it.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Mel those guys, I mean, like, so now they go
just work at Walmart full time because they're old, because
they're old. That was that was right?

Speaker 3 (17:50):
No, I know I got a greater well I didn't, right.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
I want to understand, yes, uh shagang.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
I'm also against this Hawkeye technology because I don't want
the word Hawkeye being commandeered for anything but the main
character from the Last of the Mohicans, a character from
Marvel and the Iowahawke Eyes.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
I don't like. Now it's just gonna be Isn't there
a mash water down?

Speaker 4 (18:14):
There were several awesome characters named Hawkeye and the Iowahawkeyes,
and now it's watered down to with you know, some
tech piece of technology.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
By the way, I highly recommend Deadpool and Wolverine Good
good again. And I got there because of the Hawkeyes
come to Wolverines. And we were talking about you mentioned Marvel.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
Sorry is it Jeremy Renner was Hawkeye or something like that?

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Sure, And that's the Midway, The Midway.

Speaker 7 (18:45):

has the business and sports podcast in the DraftKings Network.
He's also author of the Sunday seven newsletter that you

(19:39):
can sign up for on his social media site, and
of course he teaches the business of sports at Dollanova University,
so he's actually a professor who can help us understand Andrew.
Let's start with the quarterback contracts, most notably Jordan Love.
Right you, the picture is your synonymous with the picture

(20:00):
of signing Aaron Rodgers to his original to his rookie contract.
I'm wondering your thoughts on the structure as well as
the amount of this deal with Jordan Love.

Speaker 8 (20:10):
Yeah, good to be with you, Doug. And with Jordan
Love's seventy five million dollars signing bonus. The word is
you're no longer the highest day person in Green Bay.
I'm just wanting to get that in thank you. Even
before Aaron Rodgers, I gave out the biggest contract in
NFL history to a guy named Brett Farr at that

(20:31):
time in two thousand and one, just for perspective, ten years,
one hundred and eleven million dollars eleven million a year,
ten years. That was the highest contract in the NFL.
Thet Packers have since done two of the highest contracts
in the NFL, but twenty one years later with two
different players, in twenty two with Aaron Rodgers and in

(20:53):
twenty four with Jordan Love.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Love.

Speaker 8 (20:56):
As I mentioned, the seventy five million dollar bonus really
comes from a structure that I started with. The Packers
try to guarantee as little as possible beyond the first year.
So he's making eighty million the first year, he's got
about one hundred and forty fully guaranteed. So it's an
interesting structure. The one thing that I've written about and
talked about that the Packers really wanted and the Dolphins

(21:19):
with Tua with a longer deal. Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence,
Justin Herbert all under contract for seven years. Jordan eleven
two are under contract five years. They did four year
extensions meeting with one year left. That's a five year deal.
That's a win for the players because in both cases,
assuming continued performance, they'll be negotiating new contracts before or

(21:43):
at the age of thirty. And the way you make
money in sports is you get to free agency as
many times as possible. So I think those are good
deals for the players. The Packers eventually gave in on
the number of years they wanted six or seven, and
they'veill relented to five.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a fascinating deal. I
just I guess my only concern. My only concern is
do we have enough data to support that level of
contract for Jordan Love?

Speaker 2 (22:18):
And I guess here's my question. You know the Packers brass.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Obviously it's different than when you were there, but it's
a pretty small shop and you're still very well connected.
Is there any part of this deal that's a that's
an over correction for underpaying him this year or the
lack of belief somebody had him had in him entering
last year.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (22:41):
I mean, listen, I'm gonna say this and people are
gonna not really understand it, and I get it, but
the contract negotiations really have become less about quote unquote
how good a player is. And I know that sounds dismissive,
but contract negotiations are about two things, timing and marketplace.

(23:01):
The best contracts in the NFL are for players like
Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott and now Jordan Love. And that's because,
as I said before, they get close to free agency
A year away is considered close on a extreme upward
trajectory in a market that's going north. So you have

(23:22):
these contracts coming up with quarterbacks, whether it's Burrow or
Herbert or Hertz or Lawrence or Golf and he's the
next guy and Tua and so are you as a
team going to go to that agent, which is really
going to the player and saying, yeah, you know you're

(23:43):
not as good as those guys. No, it just doesn't
happen that way. This is the discussion you and I
had two years ago with Daniel Jones. You either do
the deal at the market or you don't do the
deal because it's just the way we are now. You're
not going to get a medium deal on these quarterbacks.
You're not going to go to two and say, well,

(24:04):
you haven't done this, you're a thirty million a year guy,
because their better option is to not sign and go
the franchise tag route and get out free agency where
everyone will overpay quarterbacks. So it's really become a less
conversation about oh, we only had one half a year. Good. Well,
it's not about past, it's about the future. And I

(24:27):
can tell you this, Doug, I was there for three years.
We saw Aaron Rodgers in the bullpen, were like, this
guy is ready.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
He's the guy.

Speaker 8 (24:35):
Period. We're not looking. We're not going to get a veteran.
He's the guy. And that's exactly what I'm told happened there.
They were had loving the bullpen for three years, and
everybody was convinced before he stepped on the field. They
liked what they saw and obviously proved it well.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
Last year he definitely did.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Andrew Bantis our guest, the business of sports is his
is his domain really. Of course he's got the Sunday
seven newsletter, which can call him on social media and
you could subscribe to. And of course he's got the
Business Sports podcast as well, which you can you can
hear in the DraftKings Network. He joins in the Doug
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio to a tongue
of Ailoa. Now, I understand your feelings about quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
And free agency. I just don't think he gets fifty
million in free agency. I just don't.

Speaker 1 (25:23):
He's been injured a bunch, He's he's not always beloved
by everyone because he has to get rid of it quickly.
He does not have great arm strength, he does not
have great mobility.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
But I could be wrong.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
It feels like the Dolphin's overpaid because it took them
thirty years to try and replace Dan Marino, and this
is the best guy they got.

Speaker 8 (25:44):
I am agreeing with you that, And I don't know
if this has been out there by other people, but
I'm more surprised at the Tua contract than I am
at the Love contract, and that's a contract as love
with as I said, seventy five million, the biggest Sunny
bonus ever. But as I wrote in Sportsostrata this week
and my podcast, the numbers actually match up. They're done

(26:05):
by the same agent, and after four years, which are
the key key years for a quarterback, it's one hundred
and eighty six million dollars. Both deals exactly, so they
both make the exact same number in the next four years,
one hundred and eighty six million. Of those two guys.
I really thought they'd hold tight on Tua.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I did.

Speaker 8 (26:26):
I thought they'd play it out, deal with whatever is
going to come with franchise Tagraphy agency next year. That
one surprised me because obviously we know about the concussions,
we know about the hip injury, and we know about
the poor performances in the playoffs, even you know, understanding
it was freezing in Kansas City last year. But that

(26:48):
one did surprise me. But you know what, if the
Dolphins believe in him, that's that's all that matters to him.

Speaker 1 (26:56):
Stell Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Okay, Dak
and Ceedee Lamb as well.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
If you're Dallas, how do you do the how you
do the math? Right?

Speaker 1 (27:07):
I mean the big thing was Dallas didn't want to
extend even though it's a gigantic cap hit this year,
probably because they weren't sure they have other deals to do.
There's you know, you're putting off a cap hit now
for a bigger cap hit later. How do you manipulate
that cap if you're the Dallas Cowboys, He's got.

Speaker 8 (27:28):
Him over a barrel. I'm saying, Dak, he's really got
him over a barrel because he did this four year deal,
which means basically they have to come to him now
after three years and either give him a massive new
contract that'll be the highest contract ever, deal with the
cap number, or deal with free agency where he has
got no tag claus next year. So kudos to him.

(27:50):
And this is my argument about the how good. I
don't think anyone out there is saying that's the best guy,
but he's probably got the best contract aside from Watson
and yeah, I don't know. I mean, I'm guessing they're
not going to do it, although Stephen Jones is talking
like they're negotiating. My senses, from the moment they decided

(28:12):
to keep Mike McCarthy one more year after that embarrassment
to Green Bay, they're kind of riding out with him,
and they're riding out with DAK. I thought to sort
of let it go. Now it looks like they're going
to get something done with LAMB because there's negotiations going on.
At least that one seems like it's headed towards the deal.
But at this point I think they're not doing a

(28:32):
deal with DAK. But I may be proven wrong.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
Yeah, okay, help me out with this Sunday ticket lawsuit.
Gigantic number that the NFL has to pay, of course,
but now they're saying they're like, hey, we're going to
win this thing. I don't understand any part of this lawsuit.
I just I don't help explain what how people how
the NFL is able to be sued for something they're

(28:58):
charging for it kind of the exclusive ability to watch
what others can't watch.

Speaker 8 (29:03):
I'll try to make it understandable that the NFL does,
I repeat does have an anti trust exemption to sell
their media. And that's how you get the Cowboys and
Giants and Dolphins and Broncos and Packers in one package
through NBC and CBS and Fox and ESPN. That was
an anti trust act in nineteen sixty one that allowed

(29:24):
Petere Rosell and all commissioners to pull rights. What they
don't have an antitrust exemption for which they claim should apply.
Out of that one is out of town rights. So
what they've done is they've pulled the out of town
for the out of town fans that don't like living
in Philadelphia and only getting Eagles games and want to

(29:46):
see Seahawks. You have to buy the whole package, every team,
whatever it is, three hundred something dollars from then DirecTV,
now YouTube. The planef is brought in action saying that's
a violation. Why can't I just buy the Seahawks games
for fifty bucks? Why do I have to go through them?

(30:06):
Why are they charging so much? And the NFL keeps
saying it's a premium price. But the jury, the trial
came out with all this evidence that Fox and CBS
wanted it to be the highest price possible, that ESPN
even came up with an idea, let's just allow people
to buy their own team for sixty bucks, and the

(30:27):
NFL rejected it, and all of that. It all went
into a jury a month ago and decided for the
plainiffs for the Plainiff's suing NFL about the direct TV package,
four billion dollar damages trebled as Perini trust laws now
fourteen billion dollars. And today today the NFL went in

(30:52):
front of the judge and asked him to either set
aside the verdict as it's wrong, reduce the damages hopefully
down to one dollar, or order a new trial. I
have news, which is no news. The judge said, I'll
think about it. So there's no decision today from the bench.

(31:14):
The judge has taken it under invisement and we'll see.
The only thing else I'll say, Doug, is that I've
talked to NFL lawyers. They know when they have bad facts.
When they did the Saint Louis case and they were
gonna choose to bringing the team to LA against their
relocation guidelines, they knew they had bad facts. They settled

(31:35):
for eight hundred million dollars. Sure they think they have
good facts here.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
I just I just say, you're like again, all the
TV networks do this with you know now with they're
streaming for example, like Peacock has done this. Now you're
gonna want Peacock because they have all these other sports.
But you go back like two years ago when they
would put Notre Dame on there, they put a Notre
Dame game on there, You're like, well.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
You want to watch Notre Dame. You gotta do.

Speaker 1 (31:58):
You know you got to pay for Peacocks, right, you
know they did that with the ESPN. You we've done
that with Fox Sports one put a game over there,
so you have to get that on your cable network.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
So it is done.

Speaker 1 (32:07):
I just I don't understand how you have the right
to sue and win when when you're talking about out
of market TV rights that they that these companies paid for.

Speaker 8 (32:22):
The theory is that these owners collectively, as per antitrust law,
engaged in anti competitive practices. Meaning we could have offered
less we didn't. We could have offered individual game package
and team packages, the Packers package, Alliance package, a Dolphins package,
we didn't. We could have charged and made a lot

(32:44):
less money. We didn't. So we'll see where it goes.
I mean, either way, It's going to be years of
appeals if the NFL loses. If they don't lose, it's over.
But this will take a while and as of course,
there will be lawyers awesome stuff.

Speaker 1 (33:00):

Speaker 1 (34:12):
Are we gonna have Kendrick Perkins go on to TV
shows and say it's totally disrespectful. Joel Embiid did not
play when they won by twenty points. Nope, nope, not
gonna happen, Not gonna happen. That would actually be rounded analysis.
But that's not gonna happen. Okay, let's get to the
press with Dan Byer the press, Danny b what do.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
You got money?

Speaker 3 (34:37):
You didn't say who the leading score was?

Speaker 2 (34:39):
I did not because I don't know who it is.

Speaker 3 (34:41):
It's that's okay, it was it joke.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Bam ad bio, bam at a bio.

Speaker 3 (34:47):
I figure it's the week to critique updates. You know,
let's let's just do it.

Speaker 6 (34:51):
No, Baman of bio, you know Kevin Durant at fourteen
points for Team USA now ninety six to eighty two,
with fifty two point four se its left in favor
of those Americans.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Right, that's only important because it was a twenty nine
point spread, is that right?

Speaker 6 (35:07):
Yes, something like that was. He was enormous. I just
agreed without having any knowledge. So don't take anything. Don't
take anything with that or from that. All right, doug,
Let's get to the let's get to I guess your
favorite highlight of the day. We've got to step out
of the Olympics for a second, head to the diamond
to offering.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
And that's a flag off deep right field.

Speaker 6 (35:29):
It is down the right field line and it is
long on the first Mangeli Hommer for Jackson Holiday had
suggerandzind on w b A L and the Orioles Radio Network.
Jackson Holidays. Yes, your your buddy, your pal, your your

(35:50):
buddy's son with the.

Speaker 2 (35:57):
Really happy for him.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
I mean, look, he he just happened to go through
a bit of a slump right when he got called
up last time. Got that thing figured out and has
performed well in the minor leagues. Got the call up,
they made a bunch of moves. Now he's done the
best team in the American League East and he's showing
how he can hit the baseball.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
That's pretty awesome. Awesome.

Speaker 6 (36:15):
Las Vegas is going to be serving as the host
of the twenty twenty seven Big Ten Women's basketball tournament
and will also host the twenty twenty eight Big Ten
men's basketball tournaments.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
Is that that's weird?

Speaker 3 (36:28):
That's weird.

Speaker 2 (36:28):
That's alternating that then not doing the same time.

Speaker 6 (36:31):
Soft launch is the women. They get the kinks out.
Don't you think see how it's gonna work?

Speaker 1 (36:36):
Yes, the only problem is like, is the Big Ten
women's tournament going to be well attended without Kaitlyn Clark
in it?

Speaker 2 (36:43):
The answer, it will.

Speaker 3 (36:46):
Also could be done. I don't think there's any conflicts,
because you know there is.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
I mean, I mean, like listen, if you're going to
go to Indy for the weekend, see them both great
Kansas City, Yeah, has has both the men and women
from the Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
I just I like that better.

Speaker 6 (37:00):
Yes, but there are other sites mentioned. Detroit's gonna get
a women's tournament. The Big Ten mantal toggle between Chicago
and Indie before going to Las Vegas.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
In twenty twenty eight.

Speaker 6 (37:13):
Calves signed center Jared Allen to a three year MAX
extension with ninety one million dollars.

Speaker 1 (37:19):
Jared on a really really good year and my boy
Antoon Broxy deserves a point a part of that. He's
like Jared Allen's personal coach. So Calves look like they're
loading up a little bit. And remember before for injury,
they were tied to a piece for the balls of Celtics.

Speaker 6 (37:36):
Bill Belichick joining Underdog Fantasy to create a new football
show where he'll be breaking down film as if he
were coaching the team.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
You look right here. Actually, I think that's gonna be amazing.
I like it.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
Belichick like choosing his own shot. This is how I
want to how I want my media career to go.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
I love that.

Speaker 6 (37:53):
Coming on quick final ones from the Olympics. In tennis,
Cocoa golf out completely lost in mixed doubles today and
in women's doubles for the Americans, Will Rafael on Nadal
and Carlos Alcarez were ousted. Couldn't be the last time
we've seen Na doll at Roland Garros. And that's the press.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
They get out there and pressed that was the press?

Speaker 3 (38:14):
All right, Doug Gollip Show.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Remember the podcast is available top of the hour just
typing Dougalean we everget podcasts. Team USA is gonna win.
