on Saturday night. There's a guy who judges players for

(01:28):
simulator golf league. I will discuss that upcoming. Plus we
got the press. But before we get to any of that,
we do this every Wednesday, Wednesday's day, middle of the week,
middle of the day, middle of the show. We call
it the midway.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
He's not getting the middle with you, It's time for
he stuck in the middle. The midway.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
All right there, Jason Stewart, what's the midway topic today?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
You know what? It's Doug Gottley's birthday today, and happy
happy birthday, old man. I think you mentioned something.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yes, A right p Matumba. We have We have Momo
say on our team and momos he say he doesn't
have a Matumba voice, but definitely has a deeper voice.
And I told everybody that Momo should I need to
tell Momo this. He needs to go third person. I
think he needs He's I don't love people going third person.
(02:28):
I think Momo needs to go third person just again,
like if you're Matumbo, suppose he needs to go third
person all the time. I would love to hear what
momos he said, like momost he say wants to bull anyway?
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Sorry, go ahead, since it's your birthday today, yep, and
I really do want to. I want to talk about birthdays.
You brought up something last hour or two that could
be a part of this conversation, mentioning it in the office,
celebrating it, acknowledging it. I think I think you have
(03:00):
changed over the years on that. And then I want
to know who else was born today. I thought you
mentioned recently that the other famous people were born today.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
And then Dan.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Dan's birthday is tomorrow, and I want him to share
who was born on that day, and just your general
thoughts on this amazing week where two of our you know,
integral members of the show are turning a different age.
And then I have I have an offer after you're
done there, to change the traditional birthday song. I think
(03:34):
it's reached a point of cringe. It's no longer fun
or funny for anybody involved, and we need to change it,
and I have the perfect song to.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Play it out. It's played out like even kiss f
N won't play it anymore? Is that you're doing?
Speaker 5 (03:53):
I mean goodbye.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Martin Luther King Junior was born on January fifteenth. I
think he stacks just slightly above Matt Holiday and definitely
above me probably yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh. I'm fifty
next year. This is my last year at forty nine,
which means I'm actually fifty now, right, isn't it because
we don't count first fiftieth year.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, the start of your fiftieth year fifty years old.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah, so I'm forty nine. I don't feel forty nine,
like if I would have said to my ten year
old self, like what does forty nine look like? Like, whoa, whoa,
that's old.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
But I don't know you're a forty nine er.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I am. I'm a Today's my San Francisco birthday.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
Nothing was Nothing was faster than thirty to forty for me. Yikes,
and about it forty to I'll be forty eight tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
So it was. I don't know if it was as quick.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
It's been very quick, but to me, the thirty to
forty was just wow.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Come on, Okay, so do you guys we're both Capricorns, right, Yes,
do you ever look at your horoscope?
Speaker 3 (05:02):
I have, Yes, I don't do it daily, but at
times I will.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
All right, Well, tell me if this is accurate for you,
because I don't know. I just read this. Social events
and group activities are likely to take up most of
your day. Capricorn. You could come into contact with so
many people you may not be able to keep track
of them. All get contact information, all the new acquaintances.
You should experience a lot of intellectual stimulation. Conversations take
up most of your energy. This day should be an enjoyable,
(05:29):
but tiring day. Here's what's funny about it. Okay, so
this morning we had a good long coaches meeting, actually
I kind of two hours. Talked about a bunch of
stuff because we have three games and six days coming
up to starting Friday. And then my boss came in
and he has a tendency to steer the ship off
the main road and into the creek a little bit.
(05:50):
We got back on the road. Then it had practice. Okay,
that took a bunch of it. Then I had the show,
and then after the show, a buddy of mine named
Mike Sadoff. He invited me to the Bucks game and
I got court sided for the Bucks tonight against the
Orlando Magic. Orlando Magic are coached by Jamal Mosley. Jamal
Mosley I used to coach in AAU when he played
for my dad's team come out of high school in
(06:12):
San Diego that he played Colorado. Now he's head coach
of the Orlando Magic. We also have a dinner before
the game with kind of some new sort of acquaintances. Anyway,
like I kind of think the horoscope thing is sometimes
it's hit or miss. It's not real, but it kind
(06:32):
of does take up out of my day. There are
a bunch of new people and it's going to be
enjoyable but tiring. It's a good one.
Speaker 6 (06:39):
I will say this on birthdays and to go back
to what Jason said, by the way, my birthday tomorrow,
Albert Poolhols, Joe Flacco, the late de Lea Shaw Day,
Debbie Allen, Ronnie millsap, Don McClain, the Hoopster, all January
(07:01):
at UCLA. Yes, all January sixteenth birthdays.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Okay, go back through those names because I'll give.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
You Chi from Baywatch.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
David, one of my favorite names.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Go back to the first go back to your first one.
I'm gonna give you my one line, and.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Everybody all right, elber poolholes.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Okay, I mean you know, in the conversation of best hitters.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Of our lifetime, Joe Flacco.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Not elite, but but super Bowl champion.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Aliyah, the late Aliyah of.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Late Aliah right did was she the one who's married
to R Kelly or something?
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Well, they had like a relationship. I don't think you
can be married if she's fourteen, that is, but I
did have the Okay there that is the perfect line.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Okay, here we go. Not in this country at least.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Ronny Mill sap.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
I saw him live. He didn't see me.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
But I knew that was coming. Ronny Mill STAPs, Blind Firs.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
I don't know Blind Legendry Hall of Fame cut you
a Western musician, but I did randomly see him in
Do Rant, Oklahoma, Do Rant, Oklahoma.
Speaker 7 (08:10):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Shade, I mean shot A. You talk about great r
and b artists of our childhood.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
And soul right, yeah, even to this day. Yes, Shade
love songs.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
This no Ordinary Love.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah, that's my favorite one.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
I think no Ordinary Love a lot better when she
sings it.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
I had no idea who Shade was, and I thought
her name was Sadie.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Yes, like the Hawkins dance. Yeah, keep going in a
couple more of than I just want. I want to
do the Ronny mill set thing. I thought that was funny.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Sorry, that's all right, I've done that before. Just for
the punchline you mentioned work.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
I usually take off for my birthday, but because of
the funky week that that it falls on a Thursday,
and it's a funky week just falls on a Thursday,
I felt that I should go to work. And that's
why I'm taking off on Friday, because then we'll be
in on Monday, which is the holiday for MLK Day,
(09:13):
the observed holiday. On Monday, we will obviously be in
for all the reaction from the crazy weekend of NFL
football in the National Championship Game than Monday night.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
So that's why I'm going to be off.
Speaker 6 (09:24):
But I'm actually going to be at work tomorrow, which
I usually I am not to usually take off my
birthday to go celebrate.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Hey, our day guy.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
You know how you have those memories on your phone
that pop up, you know, Yeah, it's really interesting. I
got one from my daughter Harper where she is, like,
couldn't be any better, right, in terms of memories, this
is from how many years ago?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Is this for.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Six the Midway al On? I gotta scroll down to
it because deep in there. Oh from twenty sixteen, So
my daughter was seven. Oh no, she was ten at
the time. Dear Dad, happy birthday. I hope you know.
I wish you could have a day off off of work.
I knew you had a very tight schedule even if
you're at work. I hope you have a great b day.
(10:11):
It'd be great. Harper g like right, Like there's a
kid who gets it, and it does prove I you
know what, Dan, you should always do that, dude, always
do it. I haven't done it. I just haven't. I
do a bad job of taking days off. But that's
that's a good tradition to have.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
There is the balance.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
One time at work, I was here on a day
and there was just for example, let's just say Jason
and Iowa Sam were in the room because they're here,
but this was a different time.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
We had a producer.
Speaker 6 (10:45):
Actually it was Gavin who used to produce the show,
Gavin kinzlmate. I had three people in the room. Wish
me happy birthday. Just oh, you know, somebody would say, Dan,
have a great birthday. I think that's what Ramo said.
Somebody else was in the room like, oh, I didn't
know it was your birthday. Happy birthday, Dan. Somebody else said, yeah,
happy birthday. Gavin refused to to even acknowledge it it
(11:05):
was my birthday as he was sitting there on the
computer because he felt he was being bandwagon and jumping
on everybody else.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
I can respect that because I mean, here's the reality, right,
My kids haven't wished me happy birthday yet. Now a
couple buddies from mine just just put it out on ig.
So now I think they're gonna bandwagon it, and I'll
get calls this afternoon. I'll be like no, no, no, no,
no no no no no no, no, no, now no
if you didn't text me first thing in the morning. Now,
some people they do the Facebook thing, and that's kind
(11:35):
of cheating. It still works.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Yes, Oh, I rely on Facebook for telling me when
people's birthdays are.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Oh yeah, I do that all the time because I
just can't.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
Remember it outside of my sister and my parents.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
I mean, I saw I saw Ronnie mills Hath's birthday was.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
Also I do the bandwagon thing on Facebook where someone
will post happy birthday to someone and I'll just comment
underneath with like a sticker like happy birthday, and then
I don't have to make mount posts.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
What do you think about the people with thanks so
much for all the birthday wishes? That sounds like you're
searching for more birthday wishes.
Speaker 6 (12:05):
Of course, well when you do it when you're birthday
is six hours old, like, and you have eighteen hours
left in the day, like, that post has to come
there within the next day, yeah, the next day or
with only two hours remaining in your birthday.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
You can't do it morning. You can't do it midday
because then it's just a cheap ask. That's all. That's
how I view this isn't nom there are rules here.
There are rules here for this, Okay.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
What are the rules?
Speaker 5 (12:33):
The rules are You can't with eighteen hours left in
the day say thanks for all the birthday wishes.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
You got to wait till the next day or I agree.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
And by the way, it is okay to forget people's birthdays, right,
It's like so totally him is like you know what,
I just forgot? Sorry.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Sometimes up Vietnam. I was quoting a big let my views.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
My views on birthday parties I think haven't changed since
the late sixties, and I can get criticized for this.
I understand this goes against everything Dan stands for.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
I was at your fiftieth birthday party, by the way.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Yes you were fun.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
There is I don't think dudes need to say happy
birthday to dudes. I don't think that taking off worcaus
is something that is necessary. I think women have taken
birthdays and made such a sham out of it because
women will extend their birthdays through the weekend and then
(13:33):
they'll make an entire month out of it. I have
a friend of mine whose wife's name is Brooke, and
she calls it October Brooktober, and every single day needs
to be her day, and then kids under twelve can
celebrate birthdays. But after that, I don't know if you
need to. Dan is my witness. October sixteenth came and
went on this show without it being acknowledged. Dan, because
(13:57):
he's a considerate dude, going into the last break, said
do you want me to mention it on the air?
Speaker 3 (14:02):
And what did I say? No, that's correct, right?
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I will say that, Jason, if we're honest with ourselves, right,
we don't make up the fact that you're kind of
a curmudgeon for most things that are celebrated in life. Right,
that's kind of your It's not even shtick. It's legitimately
who you are. So it's not that you're you're not
making valid points, but we have to take it with
a grain of salt that this is kind of who
(14:28):
you are. So it it definitely what are the kids
saying that when people say, nowt that tracks, Like, yeah,
that tracks?
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah, you know it's on brand.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Yeah, I look. I think here's how I think about birthdays.
I think it all depends on you, right, if it's
significant to you. I know people that I know somebody
who hates her birthday, Like, do not mention my birthday,
don't bring it up. I hate it. And I think
it's because she's just like, nobody likes getting older. My
(14:58):
thing on the birthdays after you get the twelve years
old is. I do think there's only a couple of
birthdays that really matter, right, eighteen matters, twenty one matters,
thirty sort of matters, forty, fifty, sixty whatever.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Yeah, the numbers and then I agree that. I agree.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Once you get past like seventy, like everyone's kind of
a celebration, like you're still alive, you know, Like my
mom is seventy nine years old, So seventy eight, nineteen
forty six, it's twenty five. But is she oh she's
forty six. Yeah, she's seventy nine years old, Like that
should be celebrated. Why because she's still kicking.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Definitely the next year's birthday too.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
But but you say that, Doug, And I'm gonna say
two things.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
Number One, I vividly remember when myself, John Ramos and
Ron Music chipped in and we got you a Travis
Matthew golf hat for your birthday and we brought it
to work, and you said on the air, you know what, guys,
people downplay it. People say they don't really care what
people think of them. Sometimes it's nice to be thought
of on your birthday, thanks gutt. I remember that to
(16:00):
this day, Yes, And I was, that's a great point,
and I mean it. I don't need celebration or fanfare.
My best birthday to date, best birthday to date was
I was gosh, it wasn't it was probably like I
was like probably thirty five, I was et ESPN and
(16:20):
we we invited I think it was three other couples
to dinner and we just had dinner and at the end,
you know, they and again I specifically said, like I'm
not inviting to dinner, so you pick up my dinner.
Like we're just all going to dinner and have a
good conversation and catch up. Because January very busy time
(16:43):
when I was at ESPN doing radio and doing college basketball.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
We had a great dinner. I was like, man, that
was really good. And then people just recognize my birthday.
I don't want any presents. You want to pick up
my tab Great, that's awesome. That's enough. So that's how
I roll do. I like it totally mentioned. I like
my friends to remember it. I always apologize to Dan
because usually I forget it. This year, I made it
a point like I'm not forgetting Dan's birthday, although tomorrow
I'm gonna wake up and be completely lost in thought
(17:08):
and forget. But yeah, that's really what it is. I
just want. I just like it when my friends remember
it and somebody just goes, hey, hig birthday.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
But you just want to have a nice day, you know,
you just want to have a day where without hassles
and you just want to have a good day.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Okay, So Jay Stu, let me ask you, what's the
what's the new birthday song?
Speaker 3 (17:32):
We need to do?
Speaker 4 (17:33):
All right, real fast? Uh change out the current birthday song?
And that's been going on for a century with this
hit from the eighties from Alter Images. It's got an
edge to it, It's got a great sound to it.
Play this at every birthday moving forward. In fact, why
don't we just bump out with us? We don't bump
out anymore? But wasn't I we just bump out with it?
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Well? This this was on a movie do you want movie?
Speaker 3 (17:55):
It was in uh fire one of those right candle?
Sixteen candles makes that makes sense?
Speaker 1 (18:02):
That's sixteen candles that tracks which I made my daughter's
watch on their sixteenth birthday. That's good parents.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
At the beginning of the song, I was not sold on,
But once it gets going, I'm like, I know why
Jason likes this.

All you gotta do is download the Doug Gotlep Show
podcast wherever and whenever you download your podcast. It's the
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. He joins
us every week and we just get a chance to
pick his brain on inside of things happening on the field,
off the field, the National Football League. He's the one,
he's the only move the sticks is of course the podcast.
(19:23):
He's Daniel Jeremiah. He joins us in the Doug Gotlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Before we get to on
the field, let me start with off the field. What's
your reaction to the Dallas job that just came opened.
Speaker 7 (19:34):
Going back two days ago, I find it fascinating. I mean,
from the Mike McCarthy side of things, it feels like
he must be, you know, somewhat confident that he could
land one of these other jobs, because you just don't
walk away from one of the thirty two unless you
feel pretty good about something else being available. And it
(19:55):
feels like if they would have, you know, if he
would have lowered his contract, that expectations that he would
have stayed on there at least that's what it seems
like from the outside. And then from the Dallas side
of things, it just kind of shows a a lack
of planning or foresight to be able to, you know,
(20:15):
wait until this point in the process. They can still
you know, get some candidates in there, but man, you're
starting behind all the other teams out there looking it
doesn't seem like the smartest way to do business. But
now I'm fascinated to see what it is. I know,
you know, people talking about you know, Dion and what
would that end up happening. I just I was trying
(20:37):
to think of the last time and you tell me
if you can remember, what was the last time that
the Cowboys made the splash move. You got to go
back to times when like Dion was playing there, Like
they just haven't. They haven't operated that way. And you
know people will steerize that that's because Jerry doesn't want
anybody to outshine him. But they haven't made the splash
(20:58):
moves with players, and they haven't done with coaches.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
No, no, they have not. Stug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice of Daniel Jeremiah. I've
heard McCarthy to the Bears. What have you heard? Well?
Speaker 7 (21:14):
I think if Ben Johnson wants the Bears, it's it
would be his job, I would guess from the outside.
But you know, maybe that's not realistic. Maybe he doesn't
want to go inside the division and he lands elsewhere.
But McCarthy would make a lot of sense there as
an offensive minded, experienced coach who's won, you know, for
(21:35):
all the criticism that may come his way and maybe
a couple of most seasons games, the guy racks up
the double digit win seasons, he's got a Super Bowl,
he's won in two different locations, and they've you know,
you could easily see the upgrade offensively with what he
would bring versus where they've been, so I think that
one would make a lot of sense.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports. Okay, let's get
on the field. Let's start with Justin Herbert. You and
I haven't haven't talked since since Justin Herbert you called
his games for people don't know DJ in addition to
move the sticks. In addition, who's work at the NFL network.
He's the analyst for the LA Chargers radio network. What
(22:21):
went so wrong for the Chargers in their playoff loss?
Speaker 7 (22:26):
They had a chance to kind of deliver a knockout
punch early in the game, and it was just a
couple of crucial mistakes. You look at the two plays
to me that decided that game, or that changed the
entire game, was you have the Dean Letard interception. Right
after that, you're up six to nothing. You're at the
forty going in all the momentum in the world. You'd
(22:47):
think with Cameron Dicker you might already even be in
fieldwell range, but another five yards and that's a lock.
And you're looking at a nine to nothing game with
maybe even a chance to go down and score, make
it a thirteen to nothing game. And then the very
first play after that interception, they call a shot play
on a backside throwback to Quinton Johnson. It's not there,
(23:07):
and instead of just throwing the ball away, Justin tries
to force it to get interception. That was the first one.
Then the second play obviously the third and six team
with C. J. Stroud making a play on a fumbled
snap and scooping it up and getting them out to midfield,
and that got him on track. That got their offense
on tracked. But those two plays to me were the
(23:27):
pivotal plays. And then when it comes to Justin, Look,
he didn't he didn't play well. He didn't have a
good game. He did not play well. You know, one
ball clanks off Disley's hands. The pass protection was not good,
particularly along the interior. You got a lot of quick
pressures inside. But to me, the the you know, the
(23:49):
personnel is going to get better. He's I mean, I
think that was more of a one off for him
in terms of the poor performance. But I do think that,
you know, now he's got two games of playoff experience,
he's gonna you know, I think I'm hoping he's learning
that you're gonna have to use your legs. It's all
hands on deck to do whatever you have to do
to win a game and make plays. That the fact
(24:10):
that he didn't crush the football I think was a mistake, yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Which he had been doing all year, especially in the
in this system. Okay, but there's and I don't know
where the energy, the anti Herbert energy comes from. But
he doesn't play well, they lose, and it's like, oh,
we got to have a discussion about Justin Herbert. Like
you watched every game this year, you understand the personnel
(24:37):
and what they're asking of him. If you were to
say one to ten in totality of even counting the
playoff game as the worst performance of the year, I
don't know if that's the worst performance of the year.
What type of year do you have?
Speaker 3 (24:51):
One to ten?
Speaker 7 (24:53):
I thought Justin had an eight. Yeah I could, you know,
that's what I would put it. Considering who he's working with.
He had one one, you know receiver in mcconkeye who's
going to be a star, and you saw that with
him almost putting up two hundred yards in the playoff
his first playoff team. He's an outstanding but you don't
really have a strong number two receiver you don't have
a number one pass catching tight end. You've got Will
(25:17):
Disley as your tight end, who's gonna you know, been
a great blocker his whole career, but he was being
relied on to be the main target in this offense.
That's not who he is. You've got, you know, running
back in JK. Dobbins, who's you know, runs really hard,
but he missed time. You don't really have a super
dynamic home run hitting back, and you have an interior
(25:38):
three of the offensive line that's not not you know,
championship level. So the good news for Herbert and the Chargers, Doug,
is that they have I joked with Joe Org he's
a general manager. I said, you guys have been able
to shop at the hardware store and get all that stuff.
I said, this year, you get to shop at the
toy store. You's got to go out and get some
(25:59):
weapons and some toys for your quarterback. And I think
those things are cheaper and they're easier to find than
left tackles, you know, and obviously the quarterback itself, they've
got the toughest things to find already in place.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
Yeah, I'm in less insightful and more condensed fashion. Basically,
That's what I said. I just I don't know where
the anti Herbert thing comes from. I really don't. It's
a weird one. He's so inoffensive. I think the only
thing I can think of DJ is most people don't
watch full games unless they're standalone games, and the Chargers
(26:32):
didn't play many, if any, standalone games, and so this
is their only tidbit of watching and they're told, man,
he's really good, and then he doesn't play as well,
and they think they're being lied to all year because
people like want to make a mis start. I see.
Speaker 7 (26:47):
The only thing I can think of, well, I think
he's I think there's also this negativity not just towards
Herbert but to the Chargers. I mean, everybody talks about
charging and blowing games and overrated, you know, high expectations,
always coming underneath those expectations. That's been you know what
the kind of anti Charger crowd has had forever as
(27:09):
they're as their calling card, and I think they've they've
you know, kind of placed Herbert within that criticism and
it's like, look, man, this is this is the ground floor.
This is year one of a new coaching staff. Do everything.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
This is this is good year.
Speaker 8 (27:25):
Man.
Speaker 7 (27:25):
You have double digit wins, you got into the postseason,
and I can make a strong argument without having seen
one move I can. I can guarantee you I'll stamp
it that this roster will be vastly improved next year
around Justin Herbert.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Okay, let's let's get to a couple of other playoff stinkers.
I I texted with. We didn't have him on dani Orlowski.
He said, by his estimation, ninety percent of the breakdowns
in the Vikings offense were not of his doing. Offensive
line he thought was the biggest. We've had others that
(28:01):
have told us, hey, play calling wasn't good either. What
were your thoughts on what led Sam Darnold to have
such a stinker in his playoff performance?
Speaker 7 (28:10):
Well, I mean it really is kind of the last
couple of weeks, right, you know, he did unfortunately for Sam,
who's played his worst.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Two games now.
Speaker 7 (28:17):
The offensive line got overmatched and overwhelmed in both games.
But I think there's no there's no perfect players. Everybody
has their kryptonite, and I think with Sam, when he
gets hit like that early, unfortunately, it's just speeds up
his clock. And you think Okay, we took all these sacks.
(28:38):
He must be slowing down, you know, he must not
be seeing things clearly, he must be playing slow. And
it's actually the exact opposite. He's playing too fast.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
You know.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
He got hit, he got pressured, and then he's getting
off one to two to three, and he's just everything
just moved way too quick for him. And that was
some some things that had happened, you know, early in
his career when he wasn't playing well, and this year
he played great for the majority of the season until
these last two games. And I think it's unrealistic, Doug,
(29:09):
that you have, you know, five plus years of some
bad habits due to what you're playing with, uh, that
you're going to eliminate all of that in one one
year as a starter, in your first year playing in
a competent you know, offense with with competent support he had.
He had two clunkers at the end of the year.
I'm I don't think, I don't think you can absolve
(29:31):
him with any of that blame. But I also think
you have to step back and look at it on
the hole and say, this is a pretty dark, big
step for him in his.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Career Okay, so a lot of people are making the
case that Kevin O'Connell's, his comments, his some of the
words you use were almost in past tense form, right like, Hey,
do you think there's a general understanding that he won't
be back?
Speaker 7 (30:00):
I don't think so, but I mean, I think it's
just it's tough when you've had the year that they've
had and then for it to end in kind of
a crash and burn fashion, that you'd be tempted to say, Okay, well,
we've got this other guy who we really liked, who's
really talented, we haven't seen him yet, and maybe that's
the solved you know, maybe that solved the problems that
(30:22):
that popped up here. I think that's a natural human nature,
you know that, Oh maybe this guy, maybe that's that's
an easy one. This is just a quick fix. We
swapped him out, swapped JJ McCarthy in, and all our
problems are solved. I think that's, you know, that's the
immediate reaction would be would be an easy one. But
I think at the end of the season, you need
(30:45):
to remove yourself from the emotion and give it, you know,
a week to ten days before you start making any
any strong you know, sways an opinion on which way
they're going to go at the quarterback position. I think
that would be dumb do that at this point in time.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Daniel Jeremiah
is our guest. Pittsburgh Steelers collapse of epic proportions down
down the stretch. I will I'll just give you my opinion.
You can say, listen, you know what you're talking about.
It's I think the offense was so limited, so limited
with Russell that I think that hurt their defensive energy.
(31:25):
You know, it just did like I thought Herb Street's
comments were right, like it looked like they were they
were dead before they were actually dead in the field.
And I think it just comes from and that we
can't score here, like what are we? What are we doing?
Some people think it's Tomlin's message has gone stale. What
do you think?
Speaker 7 (31:44):
I think they don't have them. I don't think they
have a championship quarterback. I think that's obvious. I think
that it is deflating to the defense. I mean I
saw it in the Charger game, you know, and your
defense is constantly just going right back out there and
especially if you're playing against a team that physical, that
get that gets old real quick and then so you've
(32:05):
got that side of it. I also think if you're
Mike Tomlin and I've been out there for a training camps,
I've probably seen just about every team you know in
training camp over the years. With with NFL Network duties,
it's as physical and grueling and grinding of a training
camp as you're ever going to see. And you know,
Tom Coughlin had to make that adjustment when he was
(32:27):
with the Giants. He had to back off, he had
to change his ways because his team was running out
of gas at the end of the season. And this
has been several years in a row of this happening. Now,
I think if you're Mike Tomlin, you have to take
a step back and reevaluate how you're constructing practices training
camp and see if you can't figure some things out
on your end. While your guys look so heavy legged
(32:49):
and h and slow at the end.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Of these seasons, yeah, well, losing, losing in the practice field,
too much press and it's a longer season now than
it's ever been. With the added seven round game with
the and and their their season was backloaded with the
more talented teams at the at the end of the year. Okay,
last thing, I know, you gotta go, we gotta go.
(33:11):
Aj Brown still seems I mean like that that group
is still not not working together all that. Well, what
are your thoughts on how this thing? But they they
did win and kind of similar to the Packers. Packers
got off to such a poor start. I'm not sure
you come back from that in the playoffs. But what
are your thoughts on the dysfunction within the Eagles?
Speaker 7 (33:32):
Well, I think you if you want to go glass
half full, you say, any team that wins a championship
has to survive a clunker. And that was kind of
an offensive clunker for them, and they still won the game,
and you're hoping that that's you know, you just kind
of flush it and then you're you're you're more consistent
and uh, and you can actually throw the ball a
(33:53):
little bit in the next game. But it wasn't pretty offensively.
The The other point from that one, though, is all
the playoff games this weekend, you tell me, you know
you watch him as well. I thought Philadelphia, Uh, they're
the way they hit people in that game defensively, was
the most physical performance of the playoffs, and I don't
(34:13):
even think it was close. Every other time they hit
somebody from the Packers, they left the game.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
Doug.
Speaker 7 (34:17):
I mean when Elton Jenkins pulled and Nolan Smith instead
of bracing and trying to hold up, you know, to
try and brace for a pulling guard, Nolan Smith at
two hundred and thirty eight pounds, went right through his chest,
knocked him out of the game. I was like, oh,
and it started from the kickoff, the opening kickoff with
that hit from Warren Burks, Like that was a physical
(34:38):
performance and that works. That plays, especially in the postseason.
So they've got offense they need to figure out. Jalen
Hurts is you know, even rusty. I don't know what's
going on there. That doesn't look like he's dialed in.
But if their defense is flying around and smacking people
like that, they're gonna they're gonna be in this thing
for a little while.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Daniel Jeremi, I'm moving the sticks to the podcast NFL Network,
LA Chargers Right Network as well. DJ, we'll talk to
you next week. Thanks so much for joining us.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
Thanks brother Sumim.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Be sure to catch the live edition of the Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
At the DraftKings Sportsbook AAP right now. Ohio State's given
eight and a half to No. Tra Dame in the
National Championship game next Monday night. Also Draft Kings Sportsbook
AAP right now, you can get the total at forty
six and a half for the first half line of
the game. Ohio State's given five and a half the
total of twenty two and a half points, so slightly
(35:38):
lower scoring game, but expectations are for Ohio State to
win by more than a touchdown against No. Tree, against No.
Tra Dame, against No. Tre Dame. That's on the DraftKings
Sports Book app right now. It's Doug otlib Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Are you are you listening? Okay, Dan,
(35:59):
how do you feel about those numbers? You're a huge
Ohio State fan. That's a big number. Of course, they've
I think they've covered every every number in the playoffs
so far.
Speaker 6 (36:08):
Yeah, the uh the late touchdown against Texas obviously helped them,
and dominating wins over Tennessee and Oregon they have. It
is a big number. For a game that you just
need to win, like that's it's it's all, it is,
it's all the playoffs. Obviously, are Notre Dame's good defensively
and they can run the ball against Ohio State, then yeah,
(36:28):
it could be a little bit closer. It is a
big number for a national championship game, though for some
rudy feels maybe going into it.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
If you're a Notre Dame fan.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Yeah, yeah, there are some rudy feels there. The underdog,
no Tree, Damon Johnny low Jack.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
You guys going back to Johnny Lujack, don't you.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
The the well, that's the the old Bino Cooks fund
to see Jack. The interesting part is how I do
feel like it'll be closer in the first half. Does
that have a chance to get away from Notre Dame. Yeah,
I think it's got a chance to be closer in
the first half. That's why I like the halftime more
than the full game. Let's get let's get to the press,
(37:07):
the press.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Dannybody got tug.
Speaker 6 (37:10):
It was a rough night for Tiger Woods in Jupiter
Links in Tiger's debut and the TGL. They got absolutely
destroyed last night, twelve to one. Maybe not surprising considering
that Tiger's team wasn't as strong, but they had a
rough night, just like Mike Woodson did of the Indiana Hoosiers.
How do you explain sixty I mean, in one hundred
(37:31):
and twenty five year history of Indiana basketball, that's never
happened before.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
How do you explain that?
Speaker 8 (37:36):
I wish I knew, you know, I mean, I thought
we played better the second half. They scored what thirty
four points to second half, but sixty points is it's
just way too.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Many, you know.
Speaker 8 (37:49):
I just thought our defense and our tensity just wasn't
there and they exploited it.
Speaker 6 (37:56):
Hoosiers lost to the Ali Hie ninety four to sixty nine.
Is part of the sixty first half?
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Is that tone loads? Is that tone load? Funky Cole

Speaker 1 (38:18):
And then for twenty minutes, Yeah, we gave up sixty
to Hot State in the second half, So I've been
there before, been there before. When it when it rains,
it pours, it pours.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
That's suppress.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
That's suppress.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
They get out there and pressed.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
That was the press.
