Welcome in. I hope you're having a great day. You know,
(00:23):
we are. Falls definitely arrived in northeast Wisconsin. Boys, it's
like forty degrees last night, windy, the colors are beautiful.
But yeah, no, it's we've got another we we completely
skipped over. It was like one week of the really
cool sunny part of fall, and now it's like, yeah,
(00:45):
you know what's coming next, right, big boy?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Right, that's Midwest living for you, Doug. Yeah, you get
like a handful of days or like seventies sunny and
then I got a straight.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
I gotta share with you guys. A quick story is
Doug Gatlip share on Fox Sports Trail. We're gonna get
to the midway in a second. When you're when when
you're coaching, you know, sometimes you get into coach mode
like yelling screamer because they just they frustrate the hell
out of you because you're like, well, I taught you
to do this, you're not doing it yet, and it
takes a while for stuff to resonate, and everything else
(01:17):
is going on. One guy's hurt and this guy's got
this whatever. So I was trying to come up with
an analogy for my team. I just again, I this
is what it's really like. Okay. So obviously we play
and we play a crazy schedule if you know anything
(01:38):
about college basketball. Obviously we open at Kansas, one of
the best programs, if not the best program in the country. Uh,
but we play we only play three non conference home games.
We're gonna play Yale, they're picked when the IVY League.
We're gonna play Santa Barbara. They're picked to when the
Bick to when the the what was the Big West? Uh, well,
(01:59):
likely play College at Charleston. They're picked to win I
think the CIA, you play Saint Thomas. They're picked to
win the Summit League, and they did win the Summonth
League last year. Like it's it's really hard and the
only way in which you can really be effective offensive
and you're watching. The magic to the Warriors is that
(02:19):
despite the twenty four second shot clock, they move it
side to side. The more passes, the higher of the
shopper centers, the higher your efficiency. And so I was
trying to describe this to my team. So I said, hey,
here's what you guys are. Okay, you guys are the
high school or early college kid who the second you
see a girl and you start or you think you
(02:40):
can make out with a girl, you start trying to
take off all your clothes. Guys, you gotta talk to
him on the phone. You gotta text him, you gotta
take him out to dinner. You gotta be chivalrous. You
gotta establish a relationship. Right, You got to kind of
go through some state and then the other stuff kind
(03:02):
of takes care of itself. Offensive basketball is much the
same way. Right. We can't just every time we come
down trying just score right away. I don't know. I
was really proud of my analogy. Today. Guys are dying.
Guys came literally came into the office like coach, I
get it now, I get it, But like, no, no, no,
you don't get it. Because I was once a twenty
(03:25):
something year old guy, and it was how quickly can
we go from A to Z? Right? Come on?
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Yes, I do remember a quote from John Wooden saying
that for play in basketball is so important. So well
he said gets like a lot of hype. But also
I think it was him saying that for play is
the key to success.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Well, that was actually the thing. I couldn't remember the word,
and I made sure this is the this is the
slowly maturing but made sure look around. Okay, now who's
in the gym? Oh no's in the gym? Yes, he
said be quick, but don't hurry, and for play is
one of the keys to success. That's actually most people
(04:15):
only use half the quote Dan, that's the problem.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
That's because it doesn't matter that the means to it.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
So you got to meet him on their level. That's
what you gotta do. This is the Doug Gotlip Show reminder.
Check out our YouTube channel. That's where you can see Dan.
At some point, you'll be able to see Jay stew
And and Sam. They have technically their own cameras. Just
we got to get everything up. But you can see
highlights to our shows. You can see lots of our
takes and opinions in including that that Jay Stu thinks
(04:45):
Michael Jordan's pulling off one of the all time heists.
Like he all he has to do is sit in
his chair and answer questions, and he gets forty million
dollars for being Michael Jordan. Welcome to being Michael Jordan.
Right be downside is can't go out eat dinner without
people harassing you and telling you about where they were
when you hit a shot. Good news is you can
literally stay home, sit in your chair when NBC gets
(05:06):
the gets the rights, answer a couple questions, and you
get forty million dollars a year. I think the trade
off of privacy, I'll take it. I'll take it. Make
sure you hit that subscribe button. Don't just stop there.
Hit the thumbs up as well. You may agree with
our takes, you may hate them. We don't care. We
just want you to interact with us. Check out our
YouTube channel. That's Doug Gottlieb Show on YouTube. Let's get
(05:26):
to the midway.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
He's not getting the middle It's time for.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Midway. Is the Midway brought to you by tyrect for
forty years, Tyre's PANELPA customers or how what and where
and why and how? They drive ship fast and free
back by free road has protection with Covenian slation options
like mobile tire inslation, tyrat dot com the way tire
buying should be. He is the man of many opinions,
most of them negative. Let's turn over.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
To Jayseto today, gentlemen for the group text. I sent
this out for the Midway. What is the one storyline
you are most interested about here with the new NBA season? Now,
I'd like to do just one, don't stam it up,
just one and then drill.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Down, dog, I'll take it from here.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Can I go first?
Speaker 4 (06:21):
No, Midway, Dan Byer, what.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
Do you think?
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I think that it is Janis and Tetecumpo's future, or
possibly lack thereof. In Milwaukee, it was a storyline throughout
the season that went silent and then all of a
sudden recently because of Janis's comments him saying that he
did not have a or did not recall a meeting
with ownership. It said that he was committed to Milwaukee.
(06:47):
If the Bucks season turns on its head, which it
shouldn't do because of a variety of reasons. But if
the season turns on its head, it's what does Milwaukee
do with Yannis? Who to get in the mix? And
this may go on all the way until next summer
as well. But I think watching the state of the
Bucks and Giannis this year, because it truly feels that
(07:11):
if there was an opportunity for him to leave Milwaukee
for a different team, that now may be that time.
And I think that that that decision is is so
huge and will not only linger through the beginning of
the season, the middle of the season leading up to
the trade deadline, and then if he's not dealtic goes
all the way into next season. So that is the
(07:33):
story that I think is in my mind, a huge,
huge story in the NBA this year.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Literately, back up what Dan said, where obviously came out
that the Knicks wanted him, and like he he only
wants to play for the Knicks right outside of Milwaukee's
what he says. This reminds me of so many court
room dramas we've seen growing up. Right, he opened the door, right,
(08:00):
once you open the door. Now you open the door
to Okay, Well, if it's not New York, there's got
to be somewhere else. Or if New York doesn't ultimately
achieve under Mike Brown, then that move will be made.
Even if the ask is is I'm I completely agree
with you that that's one of the two biggest storylines.
And once you open that door now allows it allows
(08:23):
for no one denied that story. That's the whole thing
about that story. There is no one who came out
and goes, that's not true. We weren't interested in moving.
We weren't interested we there's no discussion. Nobody denied it.
So it is out there, and once it's out there,
the door is open. Once the door is opened, very
very difficult, if impossible, to close.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Yes, Dan, I also think that there's if you had
this conversation, say five six years ago, Jannis in his
young prime, that didn't seem like it was feasible. And
it was also a time where the NBA you didn't
think a team like the Milwaukee could win a championship. Sure,
so Milwaukee ends up winning one with Giannis. But it's
(09:02):
also now the fact, because of the second apron, because
we've seen the volatility now of NBA champions it's no
longer a long shot for some of these teams in
the NBA to try to build a team and build
a winner, where previously, if you were to give up
Giannis and you were the Bucks, you would have no
shot because you couldn't compete in free agency, you couldn't
(09:24):
compete with these other teams. Now I think it's completely
different in that manner, in that manner, and now you
have Milwaukee who maybe does need a fresh start, and
Giannis who maybe does say, yeah, I'd kind of like
to see where it is somewhere else because I want
to win another championship somewhere and if it's not going
to be here. Back then, it seemed like there was
no way a trade like this could possibly happen. And
(09:46):
I think now you have a reason to say that
both sides could be motivated to make a deal depending
on how things go, especially with the stup for grabs
this year.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Eas step for grabs is a big, big, big thing. Okay,
let me give you mine, gupe. Where's Lebron James finished
this season? Right? Is Lebron James hurt or is he injured? Right?
And if you remember, it's a obviously an all sports expression,
but probably first brought to the forefront with the Program, right,
(10:16):
that old movie The Program. Anyway, if you heard, get
back out there. If you're injured, go see a doctor.
We use that today.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
I'm not questioning whether or not his sciatic hurts, but
it's Lebron James. Okay, And did you notice last night?
Last year? Okay, last year, Jay Stu, what happened? Opening night?
Bronni played and we were and we were told that
(10:46):
Bronnie is gonna gonna be a rotation player year two.
Anybody see the box score last night?
Speaker 3 (10:53):
I thought the same thing during the game.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Didn't take off the sweats, didn't pee a drop nothing.
You know why, because he can't play at that level.
And the only reason they did it was to pacify Lebron.
And it's pretty obvious that they're over Lebron, right, and
they're over Lebron because of crap Like last night we
(11:18):
got Opening night against the Golden State Warriors. We traded
for one of the great players now and in the
future of the game. And you can't play, you can't dress,
you can't run up and down because you're psiatic hurts.
We're never gonna but we're not playing your kid again.
That ain't happening. We're the laughing stock in the league.
By the way Marcus. No one can wreck a watch
(11:39):
of a game like Marcus Smart. I mean, look, I
love him, He's a warrior to played for my alma mater.
But it is awful to watch all that flopping and
all the stuff he does. It's like he flops, gets
a charge, then they go down the other end, and then
they flop to and it's like it's just the word
Marcus Smart is the absolute worst watch ever ever. That
stuff is so over the top and so done. The
(12:01):
only thing more done is the Lakers with Lebron He's
like he's monitoring the situation. We're monitoring the situation. Do
you want to play or not want to play? If
you don't want to play, fine, so sorry, I ain't
no play an ord about it. But Luca's got it.
We're all right. You know, hey, guess what had you
played last night? We probably beat the Warriors, or if
we can trade it and get anything a value, we
probably beat the Warriors. By the way, what's the big
(12:26):
guy from the the Lakers who said he's gonna try
and get a Slovenian passport? What the kid from Texas
Jackson sorry, oh Jackson Hayes. He came out and he
said he's he's gonna get to Slovenians. He's gonna try
and get a Slovinian passport so we can play with
(12:47):
him on the national tab.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
I will say this something stood out to me last
night and it had Lebron James effect as well. It
was fun watching Steph Curry. Steph Curry is now in
the old guys group. Yeah, and he's not the He's
still a huge star. My point is is there's a
point where old guys like us really warm up to
(13:09):
other old guys in the league because they're still doing it. Yeah,
Like even if you hated Tom Brady, you're I think
at some point you're like, wow, it's not with the
Patriots anymore. And look at him at forty four. We
aren't that way with Lebron. We aren't looking at him
in a warm fashion. Now there may be NBA Twitter
guys that will say, man, look at what Lebron's doing
(13:30):
in season twenty three, at gonna be forty one years old.
Go yeah, like there's not the warming up to Lebron. Well,
it's because of stuff like this, Yes, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Stuff like this. I'm just telling you, Like when I
saw that bronni didn't play, and it's the sciatic. And
then he's if you've seen him out here there everywhere. Again,
I'm not doubting that his back hurts. I actually had
a sciatic problem like my sophomore year in high school. Right,
just get this nerve thing in your back. You don't know.
It feels like a torn hamstring, feels like you're killing
your back. I get it. And he's one of the greatest,
(14:02):
if not the greatest in some people's minds, passed up
player ever. And if you're not right, you don't go.
But dude, it's opening night and you offered no desire
or opportunity and everything. Everything we're hearing is he's hurt.
He's not injured. He could be going. He's just throwing
a hissy pit and trying to make his point about
you can't win without me. That's what he's doing. And
(14:23):
if the Lakers really cared, they would have thrown Brownie
in there last night. They don't. They don't. What about you, guys,
what about you? Jaysetu.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
There's so many stories. But if you put a gun
to my head, if you waived a gun on social
media and then you placed it to my head, I
would say that Jahn Morant is my favorite story wine
going into this season. He has missed upwards. I think
(14:53):
of seventy games over the past two seasons, and frankly,
I don't care or know where the suspensions end and
the injuries begin. I don't know. He's largely just unavailable.
When he gets onto the court, he does something really
stupid and Adam Silver has to remove him and suspend him.
(15:15):
When he's on the court, he gets injured. He said
the other day he wants to play eighty two games. Well,
he's never played more than sixty seven. That was his
rookie season, and he has yet to show us that
he has matured. Remember that one just complete rules of
an interview when Jalen Rose sat down with him in
(15:37):
two years and really held his feet to the fire.
So he skated on that. He has skated on the
suspensions since, has yet to really prove to us that
he's learned anything. But when he's playing, he's one of
the most exciting players in basketball.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
I think, right, yeah, haven't It's been years since we
got Quenn crazy on John Moran. But yes, KT, in
my head, that's a story. I mean, Zion Williamson kind
of in that job morant category, right, Yeah, I think
that's honestly, Look, and I want to say, I want
(16:15):
to hear yours. It's one of the things hurt in
the NBA is Okay, we have this group of guys
that are clearly over the hill, right, So that's Lebron.
You got Lebron, you got Steph kd. Giannis is sort
of working his way there, sort of maybe not fully whatever,
but that that group, right is is getting older. But
(16:38):
you had a couple of these young ones and Jaw
and Zion are guys that weight, injury off the court
just killing them. And that next wave, that next generation.
That's why these the foreign players continue to take over
because they don't seem to I mean, yeah, with Luca
it's been weight, but it hasn't affected him that much.
And obviously with the with ya on Us and Jokich, right,
(17:04):
they're dominant players that take care of themselves and don't
have off the court issues. So that's as much the
reason for the European takeovers as anything else. And that
is the Midway.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
The Midway. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

Lives Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, the
podcast called Move the Sticks. Check them out in the
NFL network. Or if you're a Lightning Bolt fan, you
know Daniel Jeremiah because he's the voice of the Bolts.
He joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. We'll get to the Chargers in a second.
(17:50):
But they were dismantled by the Colts. How real is
this Colts team?
Speaker 6 (17:57):
I think it's real. I think offensively they're exceptional. There's
nothing fluky about it. Getting ready for that game and
studying them, you know, I was impressed with with a
lot of different factors in terms of the design to
play calling from Shane Stikeen, as well as the offensive
line playing really well. Obviously, you know Jonathan Taylor when
he's healthy, he's proven what he is. And they've got
(18:17):
some size and physicality out at receiver, and they got
a big time Ricky tight end and Tyler Warren and
you know the quarterbacks playing really well. So like all
that stuff I saw going into the game, and then
when you get out there and you watch him live.
I'm like, oh gosh, this is a really physical team.
They can run the ball. Daniel Jones is getting to
throw from a lot of clean pockets, and then you
marry that up with all that other stuff like that.
(18:39):
That offense is legit now. Secondary wise, they've got some
pieces that are out and even fully full. I don't
think that's an elite secondary. And I think, you know,
good quarterbacks will be able to file up yards. And
if the Chargers don't have the two red zone turnovers,
you know, you put up a ton of points. But
they can score with anybody.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Okay, let's get to the Chargers. How much of it
is injuries? How much of it is maybe not as
good as we thought.
Speaker 6 (19:03):
Well, I mean the injury you know, saying you can
look at the offensive side of the ball because all
the tackles, I mean, that's at one point in the
game had their seventh offensive tackle playing that game. But
you know, their biggest issues and their losses has not
been ineptitude or issues there so much as the defense
has kind of let them down a little bit. You know,
as good as they were last year in terms of
(19:24):
limiting explosive plays, excellent tackling, you know, being able to
buckle down and get key stops when you need it.
They haven't been able to get off the field, you know.
I think the trade where they brought in Oway, who's
been a nice addition to their pass rush, but Aloie
Gilman goes out the door, who you know has the
safety or you know that's a communicator, and then Elijah
Molden gets hurt. So now you're down a couple communicators there,
(19:48):
you know. I think there's some adjustments that that can
be made there going forward that spot, and we'll see
if they clean things up defensively. But that to me
is where the where the concern lies. The offense has
been good enough, and I think as they get bodies back,
it looks like Joe Alt good chance he's playing tomorrow night.
The offense, they have no worries about this team. They
are good. They're gonna be fine as a playoff offense.
(20:09):
They just got to get the defense back on track.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Likelihood of that happening.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
I mean, I just think you get Khalil Mack for
more than twelve plays, you know, who's coming back off injury,
didn't play as much. I'm hoping that not not just
Khalil Mack the player, but just kind of his presence
and who he is that he can kind of get
the best out of everybody else. I still think they
have enough good pieces there to be, you know, to
be playing a lot better than they are defensively, So
I'm gonna say they can get it turned around. But man, Doug,
(20:34):
this division, I think it's the best division of football
right now. That's you know, they've got stacked three wins,
which is nice inside the division against their opponents. But man,
the the Broncos and the Chiefs declaying really well right.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Now, Well, Broncos didn't play well for three quarters and
then they had this incredible, incredible comeback. Okay, let's let's
we'll get to the Broncos in a second. Saquon Barkley
not the same guy as the dominant MVP caliber guy
of last year.
Speaker 6 (21:00):
Why I don't think there is dominant up front? You know,
I think there is some You can look at it
and say, Okay, maybe there's a little fatigue from him,
you know, toting as many times as he did and
making the deep playoff run that there's a price to
be paid. The following year. I get some of that,
but you know, just looking at them, I don't see
a guy who's totally lost his burst or anything like that.
I just I don't think they're getting as much push.
(21:22):
And their passing game until this last week had no
vertical elements, So the field just shrinks. You got a
lot of guys in there packed in tight because you're
not you know, whether it's design or just Jalen Hurts refusal,
they just were not pushing the ball down the field.
Now last week against the Vikings, watching that tape, they
did it. They were aggressive, they pushed it down the field,
and I'm hoping for their sake that maybe that'll unlock
(21:44):
some things in the running game going forward.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
It will only only time will tell. What do you
make of what's going on with the Jets?
Speaker 6 (21:55):
I mean, just the fact that the owner basically said
the quarterback all but sucks publicly.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
I don't know that I've ever Well, you have it.
You have a head coach. You have a head coach
who came in with the same kind of he wanted
to do with the raw Rod Dan Campbell thing. Owners
still totally bought into that. And then yeah, and then
the owner comes out and he's like, hey, it's hard
when you can't you just kind of complete a pass.
I've never heard of anything like that, but the but
(22:22):
the coach and the GM were the ones that picked
the quarterback and he signed the deal for a two year,
guaranteed deal. So you know, it just strikes the whole
thing strikes me as odd. But then again, it's the Jets.
What do we expect.
Speaker 6 (22:36):
Yeah, there's been some you know, there's it feels like
there's been a long time where they've struggled and they've
had a lot of these types of issues pop up.
I would say that the takeaway for me was, you know,
maybe you know, I think they had kind of a
good laugh at the Aaron Rodgers thing. Hey we brought
him in and you know, flew him all the way
across the country and sent him on his way, and
it was kind of like we you know, new sheriff
(22:58):
in town type thing, and it's like, okay, you can
strip away whether you like him you don't like him.
I would argue, even you know, personality aside, probably deserved
a little bit better treatment than that. And then now
you look up and you're like, goll Lee, they would
love to have him based with what they're looking at
the quarterback position right now.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
M h.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Speaking of Aaron Rodgers, he's taking on his old team.
But let's talk Steelers defense. What happened. I mean, they
did nothing. Joe Flacco was back there behind an offensive
line which people accuse of allowing Joe Burrow to get
hurt being so bad. And here you have Flacco who's
in his forties and not as mobile as Burrow, and
(23:39):
he's standing tall in that pocket. Granted they got rid
of it pretty quick. What happened in Pittsburgh front.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
Yeah, I don't think that was the front. I mean
that was a back issue. You know, they that you know,
Flacco was getting rid of the ball pretty quick. When
you go back through, he's got guys wide open, and
you've got some you know, some veteran guys in that secondary.
I don't know if it's kind of a collective loss
to step saying, but you don't get that open unless
there's major communication and bus you know, in terms of
(24:05):
the issues there. So that was a that was a
secondary problem for them, and that you know, it's just
they haven't been buttoned up on defense, which is unusual
for so many years. That's where they were locked in
and you didn't see you know, guys running naked down
the field. It's just all over the place. And this
is Jamark Chase. This isn't like the freaking backup tight
end that they you know, had like a leak route
(24:26):
with and kind of snuck him down the seam like
this is the arguably the best receiver in football. There's
nobody within ten yards of them like that. That is inexcusable.
I don't think they have I don't think they have
a major front issue there. I think they still have
a lot of good players up there in that front,
but many they are there, as we would say. But
I don't know if you talk about this in basketball too, Doug,
(24:47):
But like they are not tied together at all defensively.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
Yep, I'm with you. I've seen it. I've seen it
as well. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Okay, Bill's got a chance to get back
on track against the Panthers. How likely is that to happen?
Speaker 6 (25:06):
Well, give the Panthers credit, I know, you know, see
what happens with Bryce Young. But they've been running the ball,
they've been playing good defense. They you know, I pick them.
I think I pick them to lose Darner every week,
and they still somehow have been rolling here and winning
some games. So it doesn't on the surface, I think
it's a get right game. But man, they're uh, they're
playing a little bit better there. So I'd like to
(25:26):
see coming off of a little bit of a rest
if if Buffalo could you know, just be a little
more explosive offensively, and then you know, defensively, just you know,
be able to get home and have a little more pressure,
a little more consistent pressure. I don't think we've seen
much in their pass rush the whole year.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Daniel Jeremiah
is our guest. Course, Move the Sticks is the podcast.
It is absolutely out outstanding. Okay, Uh, what do people
in the league say about the Browns thing? They did
go and win a game, right, but it's against the
Dolphins and Dolphins are complete poop show. Okay, but Tomlin
(26:03):
says you can't do that. Then Joe Flacco goes and
wins the game against Tomlin. And I've just heard from
NFL people how upset they are with the Browns. But
what you know, way more people in the NFL. How
do they view the Browns trading indivision to a quarterback
that kind of saves the Bengals season.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
I would say it's just kind of, you know, maybe
more so of an unwritten rule type thing. But you know,
I also have people that are saying, you know, it's
it's a team that's looking forward, you know, to the future,
and they have every right to do that. So you know,
at the end of the day, you've got to be
whoever's on the other team that you're playing against. It's
just kind of I would say, maybe a little frowned upon,
(26:45):
but well within their right to do, you know, what
they did and get a look at these younger quarterbacks.
So I wouldn't say outrage almost more just like kind
of a roll your eyes, like, you know, oh, of
course the Browns are punning, you know, punning and in
an asset to a division opponent this early in the season.
It was kind of like one of those one of
those like it's a Browns thing type deal.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Yeah, yeah, I hear you did. We were we wrong
about the Cowboys?
Speaker 6 (27:16):
Offensively? They're good, man. I don't think that, you know,
I thought the expectation was that they could be a
good offensive team. I think they're even better than that. They're,
you know, playing like an elite offensive team. Dack's playing
at a crazy high level. They got a lot of
good pieces there. Defensively, I still have major, you know,
major concerns of what they look like there. So I mean, look,
(27:37):
they're going to be They're gonna be a watchable product
because of the offense. It's going to be fun. You know,
they can hang in this division where it doesn't look
like Philadelphia's. It looks like Philadelphia is almost kind of
sleep walking through the regular season. So I mean, they
can hang around. But at the end of the day,
I still don't think they have enough defense to get
where they want to go.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
No, no, I would, I would agree with you. This
is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Last thing,
obviously you do the draft for the NFL network. Arch
doesn't appear to be close to being ready. Aler gets
hurt and he wasn't having a good year. So as
we watch the Jets, who are going to need a quarterback,
(28:18):
the Saints, who are going to need a quarterback, these
teams at the bottom, what where where are we with
quarterbacks likely to come out into the NFL Draft.
Speaker 6 (28:28):
Well, the two names that are you know, getting the
most heat right now throughout the year have been Simpson
from Alabama and Mendoza from Indiana. And I don't you know,
I just got all my video actually just arrived the
Ethedex today, so I'm excited to uh to jump in
on it. But the the con the consensus early on
seems to be those are the two guys that people
(28:49):
are excited about, but nobody views them as you know,
can't miss big time, you know, high high graded players.
But just of this group, those seem to be the
best of the class.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Day Listen, have yourself a great Thursday night call. Then
you got the weekend off? What is it? What does
a color man do on the weekend off? With the Chargers?
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Yeah, we're gonna go watch the Christian High Patriots versus
the Point Loma. Gosh, what are they the Lancers?
Speaker 7 (29:17):
Maybe?
Speaker 6 (29:18):
I don't know. I have to ask Aaron Eric Allen
who went there the Hall of Famer. But we got a
high school fooball game Friday night and then a lot
of college football at home on Saturday. Maybe a nice
steak dinner with the with the family, a little church
on Sunday, which is rare to go to church on
Sunday in the football season. And then uh, and a
lot of a lot of sleep, Doug, a lot of sleep.
I'm getting old, man.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
There you go, there you go. You show up at
church with your wife. She's like, who are you you sure? Sure?
You don't usually come around these yer parts. DJ, enjoy
the weekend off. We need the bullets to get back
on the right side tomorrow night. Thanks for being our guest,
see Buddy all right, Stug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio,
and I appreciate Jay Stu not bringing up the fact
(29:57):
that Dodgers continue to play with the Padres, continue to
to fish to fish, that's what they do. Coming up
next to The Doug Gottlieb Show, do you hear what
Hall of Famer Tom Izzo had to say about a
recent ruling in college basketball? If you missed it, I
think you're gonna enjoy it and I'll give you my
thoughts on it. That's up coming next.

Speaker 3 (31:05):
Dabe, what you got London is calling in college basketball?
Well yeah, no, no, not what I'm talking about it
all London Johnson, a point guard who spent time in
the NBA's G League. Earlier this week, announced that he
has committed to play for the Louisville Cardinals. Expected to
(31:28):
arrive at Louisville mid year. And then we'll sit out.
You'll have two years remaining of eligibility. According to your buddy,
Jeff Goodman, my buddy as well, but I don't know
Jeff as well as you do. And I haven't talked
to Jeff in about twelve years, so, but The Field
of sixty eight's Jeff Goodman reporting that it's a topic
of conversation that has made waves in college basketball, including
(31:50):
with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, who was asked
about a G League player signing with a college program.
Speaker 7 (31:57):
I'm going to get myself in trouble.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
But I.
Speaker 7 (32:02):
Listen to people talk how kids changed. Kids aren't the problem,
We're the problem. This was sprung on us again yesterday,
where a guy can be in the G League for
two or three years and then all of a sudden
he's eligible. Most of my people knew nothing about it.
(32:23):
I don't think our commissioner. I mean, I am not
real excited about the NCAA or whoever's making these decisions
without talking to us, just letting it go because they're
afraid they're gonna get sued.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
That's really what it comes down to. Okay, So just
so we're aware, last year mid season I legally brought
over a professional player from Israel and he was on
my team, first ever mid season free agent acquisition of
its kind. And so people will say, hey, what's the
(32:57):
difference between a twenty one year old Israeli, which is
we did last years he was twenty three, and a
twenty one year old American who's played three years in
the G League with like a couple different teams here
would be my And so the way I think they
made it work is the way that foreign players make
it work, which is they had to show that the
money that he received only covered his expenses and anything
beyond that he probably had to pay back, right, And
(33:19):
the argument is like, wait, we're really We're gonna not
let a kid play because he was getting paid to
play when they're all getting paid to play in college.
That hypocrisy. On the other hand, the difference is he
knowingly made this decision three years ago and had a
choice of college or professional. He chose professional. Once you
(33:42):
choose professional, you can't go back, as opposed to players
overseas where there is no collegiate system. You play junior team,
then you play in the big boys, and you know
you'd likely collect money as well. So I actually agree
with tom Izzo, even though look, I mean, we're gonna
try and get guys G League, you know, and is
(34:03):
done like the transfer portal, He's taking a couple of
transfers as well, because you have to in order to survive.
But he's right, London Johnson made the decision over three
years ago to not go to college, to go to
the G League, ignite, and he failed in his quest
to become an NBA player. He failed in his quest
to become an overseas player. He's not so he's now
(34:25):
going back to college. It used to be you tried it,
you can't go back. Now you can. It's a very
very murky path for the NCAA, and I know they're
only doing this because they're scared to get suited.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
It offends so much of my sensibilities. Not the actual topic, thug,
But I don't know what to think. I don't know
what's right or wrong. Like even if college basketball was
under the old way, and let's say a kid went
to the G League and spent a year and just
it was not working out for him and says I
need the structure of college because I'm still nineteen years old,
(34:59):
Like that's he would be more of a reason, which
back then there would have been no leeway whatsoever. He
would not have been able to play. Or I would say, well,
let's help the kid out. You know, at eighteen, he
made a bad decision. Let's try to help him in
a certain way. I this whole thing is just crazy
to me because I would think the same thing that
maybe this this and I call him a kid at
twenty years old but needs some sort of structure. But
(35:22):
that's not what it's about at all. It's just about
winning basketball games. Yeah, So yeah, it's it's Yes, it
messes with my head.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Yes, And and I don't really blame Louisville, right, They're
just like they're just trying to win games. This is
at some point and this is no different than there's
there's a kid tying Grant Foster, who's a I don't
know him personally, I know other people that know him.
He's a great young man. He's got an eligibility hearing,
like an appeal hearing today. So he had a heart problem,
(35:52):
missed most of two years of college. So you'll see
social media like, oh he only played three years. He
missed its. He played two years of junior college two thousand,
eighteen twenty nineteen twenty, nineteen twenty twenty. Like he's been
in college for eight years, seven years. He's played five
full seasons, had two seasons where he had to sit
(36:13):
because of his heart problem. Like, dude, at some point
we got to go like, hey, or it's just as
long as you're a college student, you can play. There
really can't be any in between. And if so, it's
what Izzo went on to say, which is, what do
you do with high school kids? It's a really a
hard one. Like in Wisconsin, none of these players are holdbacks.
(36:34):
So I have a freshman. His name's Keegan ben Callenberg.
I'm super excited to coach him. We're probably gonna red
shirt him, not because he's not, but he's like, he's eighteen,
I got, I got twenty three, twenty three, twenty three,
twenty three, I got old men. And it's his body's
not there yet. So yeah, I mean we're backlogging junior colleges,
(36:54):
prep schools with high school kids because everybody's finding extra
years of eligibility and.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
Just for clarity of the NCAA also a pre the
player for Santa Clara that once played in the G League.
Last month they cleared him to be able to play
for the Broncos. So this Louisville player, a London Johnson,
not the not the first player to you know, to
have this jump from the G league to the college game.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
Dan, I believe the first one. The first name of
the first guy to do this was Van Wilder. Oh right,
he did that a long time ago.
Speaker 5 (37:24):
Right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
NFL is moving the Pro Bowl games to the Tuesday
out of super Bowl week, so the Super Bowl game
is on February eighth. The Pro Bowl will take place Tuesday,
February third, and Doug NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, so they
have no plans to make any changes to the halftime show.
Bad Bunny will be the main draw in. Commander's Quarterback
Jaden Daniels ruled out of their game in Kansas City
on Monday night.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Hey can I can? I can Marcus Mario to start?
What was the what's the old singer? Who Mike Johnson?
The congressional guys? How is Lee Greenwood? He really said
Lee Greenwood should do it the halftime show? He really
said that. You know what Roger Goodell said to that.
And that's the press. Doug Gottlib Show here on Fox
