All the things. Welcome in DoD Do, Dodo. I hope
you're having a great day. Man, I don't know. I
don't know about you. Guys.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm gonna share something with you which I'm not actually
embarrassed about, but I think if when I say it
out loud, there will be somebody like, that's weird.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Okay, I'll share with you one moment.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
For forty years, Tyrek's been helping customers find the right
tires for how, what and where they drive.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
SHIF Fast and Free and back by Free Road has
protection with.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Convenience solation options like mobile tire insallation tyrat dot com.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
The way tire buying should be.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
We're gonna get to Tuesday morning quarterback the afternoon in
a second. But I wanted to share I have an
idea for a segment, and we can actually workshop this
for just a couple minutes on radio, and the idea is,
I don't know if you want to call it, am
I weird, but it's like things that we actually do
that maybe you don't tell other people. But we're gonna
(01:20):
share and be vulnerable with each other, just the four
of us.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Sounds like a guilty pleasure. Guilty pleasure with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
No, like, like, here's what I mean. I'm on a
sports high all day today. The Dodgers aren't my team.
I'm not gonna sit here and lie to you. I'm
an La La kid or Orange County kid, but the
Dodger on my team. I love the Dodgers. I think
they're really I think their uniforms are cool. I think
their stadium's cool. But I grew up next to Anaheim
Stadium that I decided that was my team. But they're
(01:49):
like close enough, right. But because of that, the game
was so awesome and just the way it all went down,
and I like, I gotta stay away. I gotta stay
why I fall asleep, and then you know, Freddie Freemanute's
another one. And there's there's a bunch of the Obviously,
there's the Freddie thing with this with his agent a
couple of years ago. Me like, I don't that doesn't
(02:11):
even come into my mind. What people don't know is,
like Freddie is he's actually a Kid's a guy from Orange, California,
which is where I'm actually from, who went to the
same high school as my brother and sister. He's donated
a bunch of money, they got cool baseball facilities, Like
he's a count's a great dude. But when you factor
in that the football, the Packers Steelers game and how
(02:35):
that ended, I don't know what it is, and probably
obviously our season is getting ready to get underway. Like
all of those things. I've been on a sports high.
So it's like one of those you're walking around in
office and you're like kind of whistling and feeling good,
and they're like, why are you so happy? Like, well,
generally I'm a pretty happy person, but I'm actually on
a sports high. From last night's World Series game. That's
(02:58):
probably weird to a lot of people, considering I didn't
go to the game. The Dodgers are on my team.
I didn't even stay up and watch the whole damn thing.
But that's just how my brain is wired because I knew.
Maybe it's because I knew that when we turned on
the on button today we could only if we only
talked about the Dodger game. We want to talk about
the World Series. We'd be good, We'd be doing our jobs.
And I just have there's lots of different things spinning
(03:19):
in my head. So in the if we had a
segment today which is am I weird? Is it weird
that I'm on a sports hide for a team that
wasn't isn't my team a game I didn't attend a game,
I didn't stay up and watch the entire thing for.
But I just I love postseason baseball and I love
all of the different storylines involved.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
I think you're pulling for the Dodgers then, because I've
been in situations where I felt good about a certain
outcome of a game because of the team that I
ended up rooting for, even if they're not my favorite team.
I am always a fan of when you had the
best player to never win a major in golf. I
(04:05):
liked it when guys would win a major and then
they wouldn't be on that list anymore. I'm always a
I'm always a fan of that. I think that would
make me feel good. But man, I'm surprised. I think
it's a great time of year for sure. Carrie Road
said to me on Sunday, best time of the year,
and I argue, I said, no, I think spring's best
time of the year. But I can understand why you'd
(04:28):
be Uh, that's two weird.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Sports sports equinox like yesterday.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
But by the way, yeah, by the way, and by
the way, Uh notice how once football games started to
be played again, how the NBA just kind of fell
into the background. We loved it for two days Tuesday
and Wednesday last week, Like all right, I'm done, all right,
moving on, We'll see you guys again at Christmas. At
the Road.
Speaker 2 (04:51):

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well, Tuesday, to.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Kid, this is Tuesday Morning Quarterback in the afternoon. Mondays
could be overwhelming. Tuesdays are getting to whatever we didn't
get to on Monday. This is Tuesday Morning Quarterback in
the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
For more tot takes on things we might have missed,
let's go to our esteem producer, Jason Stewet.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Dog I'll take it from here.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Take it, Doug, I'll take it from here.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
If the listeners could could go kind of like into
their content consumption mode and be like, you know what,
I listened to a lot of sports content yesterday, watched
a lot of sports content, but there was one story
that I really wish could have been covered. Well, we've
got you covered here. One of our four entries today
are going to be that story that you wanted to
(06:02):
hear more about. And maybe it's this one. Maybe let's
go let's go to the north Midwest. Is that what
it's called? Minnesota Vikings and their quarterback situation. We've all
seen where Carson Wentz is I think likely out for
the year. Dan Barry can correct me if I'm wrong
with surgery. They're down to two quarterbacks on the roster now,
I want to say, and one of them is their
(06:25):
first round draft pick from a couple of years ago, McCarthy,
and we don't even know what his playing status is.
So it made me think though about what the Vikings
story has been the last year. Sam Darnold had an
MVP season until it wasn't until the postseason. Last year
they decided not to extend him. Maybe they sent him
(06:48):
an extension offer but it was declined. Aaron Rodgers made
it clear to everybody that he was holding out for
this Minnesota Vikings offer and they seemingly said no. In
the meantime, they could have brought back Kirk Cousins, who
had lost his job with the Falcons. Who's more familiar
(07:10):
with that offense than Kirk Cousins. They've passed on all
of those and now since they kind of put all
their eggs in one basket, this JJ McCarthy basket, now
they find themselves up the creek. You know what kind
of creek without a paddle. I just wanted to talk
about that, guys, that the Vikings ultimately make the wrong
move when they didn't bring back Sam Donald and then
(07:31):
could have had a couple other guys along the way.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
I think the answer is yes, I just do. And
as you guys know, I've been the head of the
Sam Donald fan club, and you know Dan's watched every step,
So I could be wrong, but yeah, I mean, Plus,
it's not just that Sam Donald showed himself to be
competent or good in the system, whatever. But I'll use
the college storyline to help you with the answer to
(07:58):
a pro question, which is you're gonna get more out
of guys that you coached the previous year. It's just
so much easier. You don't have to reteach everything, reteaching
an entire offense. And Sam's not perfect, he wasn't good
in the playoffs, but they're not even gonna get to
the playoffs, and I think they're further away from the playoffs,
(08:19):
and like, I don't think they're gonna trade away Justin Jefferson.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
But there's a legit conversation.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
To be had sitting there going like, are we really
gonna have Justin Jefferson and have JJ McCarthy out there
that those two things don't make sense. You're gonna waste
and frustrate Justin Jefferson. So I think they made a mistake.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
I think it even goes back further because when they
had Kirk Cousins, they were trying to find cousins replacement
and if you remember, and this just stood out like
a sore thumb, they had Jaren Hall, who was a
fifth round pick from BYU, started a game against the Falcons,
got knocked out. They then went to a bit of
a quarterback roulette and ended up going back to Jaron
(09:02):
Hall when they needed a must win game against Green
Bay late in the season, Packers kicked the crap out
of them, and so then it started because that was
the message, like, we want Jared Hall to win this
job so we don't have to bring back Kirk Cousins.
We are trying everything that we can to show that
we don't want to bring back Kirk Cousins, and they
ultimately didn't. Off of that Achilles injury, they just didn't
(09:25):
want to back. And up until the point of playing
the Achilles injury, he was playing pretty well. But then
it started the dominoes of JJ McCarthy. By the way,
Sam Donald is still Sam Donald. Last week Week seven
turned the ball over a bunch of times, a couple
of interceptions, fumble in the end zone. So while he's
been great and has looked like an MVP at times,
Sam Donald's warts were still what they were. Vikings probably
(09:48):
would have been better off though with him at as
their quarterback. So I get that point. Yeah, it's an
absolute mess their front office is. I've seen some Vikings
tweets as well about the awful decisions that they've had
in the draft under Quasia Dolpha Mensa.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
It's a mess.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Yeah, sure is a mess. I want to talk about
a different quarterback, Justin Herbert. Doug just a little while
ago put him atop his MVP candidacy. You know what
I'm gonna say about Justin Herbert. Look out. You know
what We've seen a lot of Justin Herbert lately at
(10:26):
media events or at sporting events with his new girlfriend.
This is not Justin Herbert esque. Justin Herbert is a
shy guy and now he's dating Madison Beer, pop star
from what the the titles tell Me and Sports Katia
(10:51):
quoted her from an interview that she did that was
posted yesterday after speaking with Serious XM's TikTok Radio with
Davis Burlison. Well, this is what Madison Beer said. My
ideal night is literally just going in the jacuzzi with
my friends. I don't like leaving my house. I am
(11:14):
such a homebody. My ideal night isn't a night out.
I like to go to dinner, but not partying. I
am too socially aware, always thinking, oh my god, everyone's here. Well,
who's at the Laker game over the weekend? Sitting courtside?
Justin Herbert and Madison Beer? Who was at the Dodger
game last night? Justin Herbert, Madison Beer. When we did
(11:35):
your training camp tour, Doug and we went to Orange
County and went to the complex wherever it is, Justin
Herbert snuck out Jack Hammond, That's what it was. I
thought it was Hammond something. Justin Herbert snuck out behind
us so he didn't have to deal with the crush
(11:57):
of fans wanting his autograph. Remember that snuck out, just
kind of like walk behind and left. And that's okay.
Maybe he signed on other days. But now for Justin
Herbert to be at these publicly public place places, being
shown on camera and not having his girlfriend saying I'd
(12:18):
rather be at home, something's not right. Something is very fishy,
because I doubt it's Justin Herbert saying, come on, babe,
let's go to the Lakers game. Come on, babe, let's
let's go to the Dodgers game. Let's go to the
World Series. Let's go. There's no way that's happening.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
You're saying there's some kind of a brand manager who's
trying to maybe work on his branding for further endorsements
and whatnot.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
I am putting it all out on the table. I
don't know if I don't believe a word that she
said in this because to this interview.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Well, she's the Yoko, She's the Yoko La.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
Yes, there you go. That's what I'm like. Beware, if
things go south beer, we will remember this point.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
And I know what headline is going to be. Is
Justin Herbert drinking too much of Madison's beer.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
I would say, too much beer not a good thing.
That so dandy.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
You find a lot of people to argue with that
where I live. I just want to point that out.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
Do you think that this negatively or positively affects his play?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
He's saying negative, He's saying he's he's stepping out being
something he's not instead of just being a football player.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Didn't you guys, isn't that weird? Like Justin Herbert, he's
been in the city for five years.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
It is it is, I will I will only say
this Dan, and I do hear you, and I don't
think what you're saying is in any way crazy. There
are some special circumstances, right, and part of it is that.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
And I wouldn't be spiced to.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
The Chargers themselves also push this, right, they're trying to
be LA. We are LA. They move to l A
or whatever. But he does have the week off. They
played on a Thursday. They got the This is like
the greatest schedule you can get in the NFL, where
before the bye week they have a they have a
mini bye week because they played on Thursday. And man,
(14:07):
are you going to turn down courtside the Lakers? Are
you gonna? Are you gonna turn down row? One would si.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Justin Herbert could get court side at the Lakers game
anytime he wanted over the past.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
But now he's but now he's got a he's got
a girlfriend, and now he's got he's got a week
and a half off in the middle of the season
and he's not traveling places.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Right, It's not traveling place, not like he's it's not
like he's doing.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
The the That's what the benefit of the dou I am.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
I give lots of biel benef of the doubt, I understand.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
I'm just saying, like, if he starts popping up at
the Clipper games and then you know he's he's on
t m Z and he's doing all kinds of other things.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
You like Galaxy game. There's justin Herbert.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Like he's banging the drum at the l A f
C games or whatever. You know, he ends up at
the USC or he flies up to Oregon. Does Oregon play?
Is that a big game this week or next week?
Speaker 6 (14:56):
Now they're off with in the Hawkeyes all Iowa at
Iowa City. If he's and I was sitting next.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Week game, yeah, if he's at Iowa sitting next week,
see him the crowd. You were like, yo, yo, focus.
Speaker 6 (15:07):
On the grid iron, not the one in the city.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Okay, No, I haven't even given mine yet. Tuesday morning quarterback.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
Well, Hawaii, you kind of took up your time, Doug
by doing guilty pleasures with Doug Gottlie guilty pleasures.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
Yeah, Doug, it was ten sixteen in the morning in Hawaii.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Okay, Well, I mean I watched Caleb Williams play and
the only time he looked really, really good was on
the first opening drive, which was like when they ran
into fifteen plays.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
It was it was a mess.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
And and the Ravens Yes, Snoop is super Huntley was good.
But like the story with the Ravens is, their defense
hasn't been particularly good.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
I just.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah, I just I I'm waiting to see it with
Kayleb Williams. They gotta They got a false start on
that first drive. That's why they got a field goal
and not a touchdown. It felt like they that really
destroyed the rhythm as first and goal and they got
a fall start. But there's there's just something missing there
that I can't put my finger on. With Caleb Williams,
(16:12):
he's fine. I think the play calling is really good.
They do some different stuff that I haven't seen other
people do, but I don't. Yeah, I watched that whole
Ravens game and I was disappointed with Kayla Williams. That's
Tuesday Morning quarterback, ye afternoon, Well Tuesday Tuesday.
Speaker 5 (16:32):
Here you have it your Tuesday Morning quarterback.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
In the coming up on the Doug gott Leap Show.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
This is the best of the Dog Dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
It's the Doug gott Leab Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
And we're so happy to be joined by Matt Holliday,
of course, seven time All Star, former either World Series
champion with the Saint Louis Cardinals, and of course he's
a frequent member. Here a friend of the program. Did
you watch all eighteen innings?
Speaker 7 (17:08):
So Ethan and I were on the couch. As you know,
I'm sure you can picture this scenario. I'm sure both
of you and Jason, your producer, can picture the scenario.
Ethan and I sitting on the couch in the sixteenth
I hadn't had a shower yet. I played pickle ball
earlier in the afternoon, and after the sixteenth inning, I
think both of them meeting the orders had just hit.
(17:31):
Maybe I could be wrong. I said, you know what,
I'm going to shower and then I'll watch the rest
of the game in bed, and he said same. So
I went and took a quick shower, got in bed,
was watching, of course the first commercial that it goes to,
I'm out and wake up and I see them interviewing show. Hey,
(17:54):
so I knew the Dodgers won, and then kind of
obviously checked out what happened this morning when I woke up.
So I made sixteen of them, probably seventeen, I would say,
but missed the end.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Okay, so here was mine. I was on the phone
and I fell asleep in like the tenth or eleventh inning,
and then I woke up and it was like the
twelfth inning, and then I was like, okay, I'm stay awake.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
I'm gonna stay awake. I must stay awake.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Then I think the start of the fourteenth I passed
out again, and then I woke up in the middle
of the night and I thought it was I don't
know if it was the middle of night or what
it was, but I felt like I was watching postgame stuff.
And again it was like I kind of thought it
was a dream. And then I turned off the TV
and woke up, and I was like, wait, what did
(18:48):
I watch?
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Who won? I don't even remember? And I turned on and.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Then I see Freddy Freeman and his big white chompers
when the win the game. So it's kind of the
whole thing was surreal. Let let's start with uh, let's
start with shoheo Tani. Which is which was a greater
game the ten strikeouts, three home runs in an elimination
(19:14):
game or four for four five walks. Again, hasn't done
it with throwing the ball, But like that game was
so pressure packed. I don't know which, which to you
was more impactful. A game that was where they eliminated
an opponent, you know, but there wasn't the pressure or
last night.
Speaker 7 (19:35):
Well, I think Game three of the World Series is
huge obviously, you know, in a one to one series,
to win Game three, especially at home, and now they
have a chance to close out the World Series if
they win the next two at home and not have
to go back to Toronto. I think that magnifies the
game last night for him, and getting on base nine times,
(19:57):
and after the four for four, I think after the
home run we could have just you know, I think
it was safe to say that the rest of the
time he was not going to get a chance to hit.
So getting on base nine times in a in a
in a game three of a World Series, I think
he's up there. I mean, it's got to be close,
but I gosh, when you're the pitcher, it's almost like
(20:20):
this crazy little league kid who's like thirteen, almost like
Danny al Monte. If anybody remembers that going back where
it's just like the bigger, better kids strikes out everyone
and he hits three homers, and he's just a better
player and looks like he belongs in a different league,
Like it was like Showhy was waiting to get called
up to whatever the next league is. I still think
(20:42):
if you're striking out people and in the playoffs and
you pitch six ingland, strike out ten guys and you
hit three home runs, I just don't know that there's
a way that you can beat that outside of if
he does it tonight, when he pitches tonight and he
hit if he hits a couple homers and pitches six
or seven in a World Series game, I guess that
(21:02):
would top it. But I think you just, I mean, golly,
when you when you pitch the game and you dominate
the game on offense. It's just it's just stuff you
never see. Like last night, you could, you know, I
think you could have seen Bonds do something like that.
You know, maybewhere he hit two hummers and got intentionally
walked four, five, six times. But to see a guy
(21:24):
pitch and dominate and then also hit three hummers. I
just don't know that we'll ever see it.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Yeah, no, I mean he's I mean you and I
have talked about his best player ever and then and
then when you say it, people are like, no, well
there was then you watched last night, like it's pretty
hard to make the argument. And then of course he pitches today.
The thing about Freddy, and this is what I learned
in watching baseball with you and e and Jackson on
that exact same couch, is how much like exit you guys,
(21:53):
how into exit d low you are right? And and
last night watching Freddie, it was like he had three
or four that were rockets that were out. They were like, yeah,
he's hitting, he's seeing it and hitting it well even
off lefties. Was that is that foreshadowing?
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Like?
Speaker 1 (22:08):
Is that how it works as a hitter where you're
seeing it and hitting well and it's just a matter
of time or is every at bat different into itself?
Speaker 7 (22:17):
No, I think it's certainly when you're when you're in
a good spot and your body's moving right and your
swing feels good, and even though you're making outs, you're
swinging at the right pitches. And you're hitting it hard. Uh,
you don't lose confidence. There's the mental space of of
something good is going to happen. And this at that
is is very strong because you can't control where you
(22:38):
hit it and a lot of times and the outcome
is is is, uh is not. You can't let your
your your your confidence and and and how you feel
about what you're doing in the box. You know, right,
the outcomes and so it's certainly I think was foreshadowing
that he was going to have a good at bat.
Now I'm not going to say that, yeah, he's gonna
(23:00):
get a game winning home run, but having been in
so many of those situations and come through, Uh, there's
a confidence level, there's a there's a can do attitude
that I certainly can end this with one swing that
he has. I think he does such an amazing job
of controlling his his swing too. He never looks like
(23:22):
he's over swinging or or swinging for a home run,
or or gets outside of his approach like he's He's
a very even keel, level headed and I think that that,
you know, I mean, obviously the proof is in the
putting of how much success he's had in the postseason
of just how slow his heartbeat is and and he
doesn't try to do too much where in a lot
of those games you start getting in there, you're like, Okay,
(23:45):
I'm gonna end this thing with a homer. And and
it kind of can change your mechanics. It can, it
can get you a little lot of whack and uh,
you start chasing you know, balls and and and swinging
at pitches that are out of his own. And but
he never seems to get sped up. And you know,
for him to hit another game winning home run in
(24:05):
a huge spot obviously in the World Series, I think
it just goes to show you what you know, he's
just he's been an amazing hitter his whole career. I mean,
he's really never changed his stance. He's never really looked
any different in his approach. He's always relied on using
a big part of the field. So just like I said,
(24:25):
ever since I saw him, you know, as a young hitter.
Now it's it's very, very very similar where some guys
kind of go through abbs and flows of changing some
things and their stance, or you know, they get a
little bit older, they have to do some different things.
But he has been pretty much the same since the
day he stepped foot on major league field.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
Jay, you had a question, Matt quickly, you have protected
great hitters. I'm sure many people have tried to protect
you in the lineup. When you see John Schneider after
the game, after having just been basically intentionally walk Mookie Bets,
I mean, Shohill Tani for the last five at bats
of the game and for Mooki to come up every
(25:08):
time and not do anything. I think John Schneider was
empowered after the game and saying, yeah, we're just going
to keep on doing this. How personally should Mookie Bets
take that? Like you've been in this position, like when
you hear the manager say we're just going to keep
intentionally walking the guy in front of me, What does
that say to you?
Speaker 7 (25:26):
Well, first of all, I mean, I think Mookie's like
the rest of us. I mean, I think he's in
awe of showhy like he's no one. It's like the
year I hit behind Albert, or a couple of years
that I hit behind Albert, Like I was in awe
of how good of it bats he had over and
over and over and over and over and over and
over and so I think you expect it, like you know,
(25:47):
it's part of it. Yeah, I mean, I think you
take it a little bit personal. But like, look, I
think Mooki would walk show Hey to face himself as well.
Like I look, I mean I think if you look
at it right now now, the way that show has
swinging the bat and his ability to hit the ball
out all over the park, and then you look at
you know, like I said, Mooki is a m v
(26:08):
P caliber player and this hasn't been his best season,
although I have been incredibly impressed defensively with how well
he plays shortstop. That's a whole another topic. But yeah,
I look, I think you know Mookie's I think all
major league players there's there's you take. You take a
lot of pride and and how you how you play
(26:29):
the game. And for him specifically, he's an incredible player,
All Star annually, and and so I think he knows
it's coming at this point. And and so I think
certain players deal with it difficult Differently. I think some
people do better with a chip on their shoulder and
they kind of build up the uh, it's me against
that you know, the manager doesn't respect me or the
(26:50):
team doesn't respect me, and I'm going to show him.
And I think that works for some guys. And and
I think sometimes that makes guys and gets them out
of there. You know, they're they're kind of locked in
this if that, if you will to where some guys
need to just go. You know what, I'm just going
to process this thing like I have for six hundred
times this year. I'm gonna processing this this at that
(27:12):
like I have, you know, my whole career for the
last ten years. It's been an amazing career. And I
need to just not worry about it and just find
a good pitch to hit and put a good swing
on it. So I don't know him personally well enough
to say how he channels that best. He would probably
I'm sure that you know, some of the Dodgers would
probably know that. But yeah, I mean I certainly it's
(27:35):
things your pride a little bit, I think. But I look,
like I said, I think MOOKI would walk show Hey
to face Noki.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Yeah, yeah, I think so as well.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
What's that like when the guy in front of you
gets what when you're like an like, look, you're a
great hitter. But I'm sure there was a time which
Albert got walked and you're like, all right, but you're up.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
And you're trying to control that. What's that?
Speaker 1 (27:56):
What are those emotions like when you're just trying to
process and hit a base?
Speaker 7 (28:01):
Yeah, I mean, I think you know, there was times
in my career where it was effective to be like,
all right, you know, sucker, you know, I'm gonna make
you pay. You're gonna you know, you're gonna wish you
hadn't hadn't did that. And then there was times where
you know, it was it was more cerebral where it
was like okay, you know, like I said a few
(28:22):
minutes ago, like it's it's okay, okay, you know, got
to get a good pitch. You know, just just very
process oriented. But for me, the most, particularly when you
feel good about your slang, like when you're in a
good spot offensively, uh, You're like, heck, yeah, can't wait.
You know, I'll uh, you know, I'll take this at
(28:43):
that and I'll be the guy you know for the team,
and and and and and so that's a good feeling
when you when you when you have that confidence. I think,
you know, nine I got traded over. I had probably
like two of the better months in my career. After
I got traded to the Cardinals and when they were
walking in, I was, I was really producing, really well,
and it was fun. I mean I was like, I,
(29:03):
you know, I look forward to the times when you
know they were walking them and and you know, putting
another guy on base. So yeah, I mean it just
kind of depends on I think how you feel at
the time with where you're at, you know, with your
swing and your confidence.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
Matt Holliday's our guest.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
You're on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio,
the seven time All Star I help and break down
the World Series. Okay, so now you got to come
back and play another baseball game. I again, I know
it's not the same and you didn't play game seven
because you got hurt in Game six, But what what
is it like to come back and play the next
(29:43):
day after games like this?
Speaker 7 (29:46):
Yeah, I mean I think it's it's the World Series,
and and you know, I don't know that there's there's
much to be said. I think you know how it's
gonna you gotta get out there and compete. Obviously fatigue.
I think certainly it's like playing two They played two
games basically one day, and I think the mental fatigue
is always a lot stronger. And in World series games
where every play, every pitch is so you know, dramatic
(30:10):
and so important that you just have to be locked
in for basically whatever six hours, seven hours, I don't
even know how long it ended up being, but you're
locked in mentally, and so I'm sure more than even
physically last night, those guys were just gassed mentally. So
it's one of those things where I think you you
try to get good sleep, you try to you know,
(30:32):
just think about, Hey, all I got to play tonight
is nine innings, like you know, just kind of reframe
it in your mind of what's try to try to
just win nine innings tonight and and uh and you know,
for the Blue Jays, uh, I think it starts on
the mound. They need they need they need him to
go out there and establish kind of a good rhythm early,
give him a couple scoreless, maybe scratch a run on
(30:54):
show hey, and then and then try to feel like
you maybe you can shift the momentum uh that that
you know, does the Dodgers have after winning that hard,
hard fought game. Uh, try to shift it quick early
in the game. But you know, a lot of the
main you know, I think three or four of the
of the Blue Jays main players, and I don't know
(31:14):
what I assume that Springer won't be able to play,
but you know, a lot of you know, I think
three of their other main players only played eight or
nine of those innings, and I think Baschet maybe even
came out earlier than that. So they have a few
of their guys that didn't didn't play all eighteen, so
they may be a little bit pressure than than some
of the Dodgers guys that did. So maybe that that
(31:36):
is a maybe, you know, some silver lining in this
whole thing. But like I said, you have to commit
just the World Series. You know, there's there's a you
can rest in the offseason, if you have to drink
an extra cup of coffee or whatever caffeinated beverage of
choice you have. You have to keep it going. But
there'll be plenty of adrenaline I think to carry carry
(31:58):
this game. And and uh, you know, again, it's nine innings.
You hope, I mean, I guess it could be more,
but you know, I think you tell yourself, look, it's
it's uh, it's nine innings. Let's go out here and
try to try to get it, get it done.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Explain the Dodgers bullpen. They had been so flawed, yeah,
this season, and then then last night you get that.
How do you and if you go that's baseball on me,
I'm gonna lose my mind, Like, how do you explain?
Uh this the group that has has struggled roundly and
play so well in that circumstance last night.
Speaker 7 (32:35):
Yeah, I mean, I think part of it is is
the Blue Jays lost for their their better hitters out
of the lineup. Springer comes out, Uh, Kirk comes out, Uh,
Barger comes out. Uh, but Set comes out and and
so the lineup for the Blue Jays, I thought for
the last I don't know you guys that have to
(32:57):
correct me specifically, but it felt like that second game,
the last nine innings, I felt like was was not
nearly as potent as as as they typically are. Uh
So I think that played a part into it. I
think the fact that you know, those guys all have
really good stuff. Now, they haven't always had a ton
of success, the relievers that came out of the pen
(33:19):
last night, but when you watch their pure stuff, it's
it's hard to argue, well, you know that that can't
be successful. I think those guys have. The thing that
I think was really caught me off guard was the
command of the last two or three of the guys
that you know, that's really where they've gotten in trouble
is is they've walked people and they've they've put people
(33:42):
on base, and then you know it's it's gotten away
from them in that way. It's never been a stuff thing,
you know, as you can tell, I think the last
two guys are both throwing one hundred miles an hour
with plus off speed pitches and and you know, locating
and look, like I said, baseball. You know, those guys
(34:05):
just kind of rose to the occasion. But I do
think the fact that the Blue Jays had four of
their main best at match out of the game, I
think certainly helped.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Matt You're the Best man, uh WI shows on the couch.
Listen to you guys talk baseball. In the meantime, we'll

Speaker 4 (35:04):
So yeah, I was mentioned last night during the broadcast
Joe Davis of Fox saying Clayton Kershaw may have thrown
his last pitch as a Dodger and doing it in
that situation. Just to go back to last night's Game three, Jason,
you talked about how emotional that moment was for you
(35:24):
and seeing his wife was the ending of his career,
playing it all on your emotions at that point.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
Absolutely, absolutely, And I don't know. Soon after they showed
him and I think he had a tear in his eye.
I think he knows that too.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
The conversation leading into the game, which I resented, was
it Dave Roberts was asked like, when are you going
to pitch Kershaw. When are you gonna give him his moment?
I'm like, why is that a concern? If we win
this thing and he never pitches, we're fine. So to
get his moment, I think we could just put it away.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
Now you would think it's fine, but I don't think
it is. Walter Payton going a touchdown on the Super
Bowl is still a thing. Yeah, and so after last
year of not being there, I think it, you know,
so I think they had to get him in.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
But the reason that it was, the reason that it
was a thing, if we're all fair, is they handled
the ball to William the Refrigerator Perry in a blowout win,
right where they could have gotten the ball to him.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
So context does matter.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Just getting him in, to get him in like they
did in the NLCS where he just took a beating,
I don't think that's doing right by him.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
I thought last night was perfect, perfect.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
He came in, he got him out of an inning,
and then we got him out of there and we
shake hands and it's heroic and now you can watch
the rest of it.
Speaker 4 (36:41):
But also it's the if he gives up a home
run or a game winning hit, that would be his
last hitch as a Dodger and that would be.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
Yeah, if Lucas takes one of those pitches. This is
a different story.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
All right, you guys heard about sky stadium. Yes, Saudi
Arabia plans to build a sky stadium that could host
matches in the twenty thirty four World Cup. The stadium
would be atop a sky scraper three hundred and eighty
plus yards above the ground floor and this could be
(37:20):
built in time for the twenty thirty four World Cup.
The renditions on social media and.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
I saw they're ridiculous. It's like a bidet, though, do
we really need this?
Speaker 4 (37:32):
It is unique because yeah, the stadium like has like
a like it you know, juts out.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
It's it's a hard pass for me. People always say
you don't like heights. No, no, I just don't want
to fall from heights.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (37:49):
Yeah, Yes, these Saints will start Tyler Shook at quarterback
in Week nine against the Rams, replacing Spencer Rattler.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Yeah, he was a Texas tech kid right when he played.
He was in college like forever. But yeah, yeah, and
Rattler the guy who was super highly touted on the
reality show in high school.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
But that little swagger to him. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
I watched Saints play part of the last two weekends.
They stink, stink.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
That's press. They get out there and pressed. That was
the press, all right.
Speaker 1 (38:19):
We'll see if the World series turns completely in Dodger's
favor later tonight Doug Gotlieb Show
