We have a jam packed second hour. Of course, we'll
got the podcast hour up. Come and download that podcast
(00:40):
or download podcast. Just type in Doug Gottlieb. So I was, uh,
I'm watching last night with the NBA draft. I flip
over them like ah, I just I love the fact
(01:01):
that there's lots of mid major guys or guys that
were formerly mid major guys coaching in a mid major
program that are getting drafted. And you know, when you
watch foreign players get drafted recruiting form players, that's intriguing too.
And I love basketball, but I'm slipping around and watching
baseball and I thought of this cal Raleigh story and
(01:21):
it's one of the weird things about baseball. But we
do a segment and I think usually we kind of
trend into it right about July we say it's it's baseball,
and it's the expression I use is because in baseball
there are weird things that happen that you can't explain.
But for whatever reason, people are like, oh, it's just baseball,
(01:44):
you know, and that you can you can have years
with the exact same hit or exact same approach. The
numbers can be a variance because you know, you get
lucky groundball with that groundball that I don't know if
this is a weird one. It's an amazing, amazing start
(02:05):
to the season for cal rallygh that's baseball, an amazing,
amazing start to this story. That's baseball for people who
don't know cal Raley and we're in the first half
of the year. Has hit thirty two home runs. The
ops is one point zero sixty three. Just you don't
(02:27):
have to be a numbers nerd to go like that
sounds really good. It's not good, it's great, it's great.
Aaron Judge for Perspective has twenty eight home runs. Show
Heyo Tani has twenty eight home runs the same show, Hey,
Tony with fifteen to fifty last year. So Raleigh has
been incredible. Now, I mean in comparison to Aaron Judge,
(02:48):
who has more hits, higher on base percentage. Aaron Judge
is on base, by the way, forty six percent of
the time. That's nuts in non steroid era to be
on base that much as his nuts. But there's this
other part to the cow rally thing, and I think
in all honesty, Jay Stu, you speak to it best, right,
(03:09):
which is the assumption that get it. Well, it's good
because there's just zero chance this guy does it for
the entirety of the year, right, that's the honest belief.
You know, he's in his fifth major league season, you know,
(03:31):
fourth full major league season. Last year with one hundred
and fifty three games played, so essentially a whole year,
he had thirty four home runs. This year, through seventy
nine games, he has thirty two home runs. So you know, look,
the only way you can say I think he's gonna
(03:54):
fall off a cliff is well, you can say low
of averages. Here's a guy who's hit thirty home runs
past couple of years now, he's got thirty two in
the first half of the season. He's gonna fall off
a cliff because that's baseball. You could also go, hey, guys,
get a better book on him. Guys, pay more attention,
Guys walk him. There's gonna be a slump at some point,
(04:14):
Jase Dy, what leads you to believe there will be
that inevitable fall off in the second half of the year.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Let's see these combined factors. He's a catcher. Catchers always
have a worse second half of the year than they
do first because of the hot months and the job
they do.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
That's baseball.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
I'll give you two examples, two of them glaring examples.
So kl just signed up for the home run Derby.
Here are the cautionary tales. Bobby I bray you in
two thousand and five had eighteen home runs going into
the All Star break, and he had six after In
twenty fifteen, Jock Peterson had twenty whopping home runs going
(04:53):
into the All Star break. He had six afterwards. I
could be wrong on this. In September, you guys can
put me on there and tell me how foolish I was.
I'm guessing he's trending to be in the bray you
Peterson camp. It's been an amazing start. I just I
can't for the life of me seeing it continue. He's
(05:15):
hitting two seventy five, which is way above his career average,
so all the indications are that he's just been hitting
out of his ass for four months.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah. Yeah. By the way, his nickname big Dumper, all time,
great nickname right all time. Now he's a big old
boy six three, two thirty five. Big dumper, I believe
is about his prodigious backsad big dumper. That's an amazing
(05:48):
that's a go ahead play the big Dumper. Sound. This
is so good, right, I know it's under Dan Patrick.
Go ahead cow. What's different this year as opposed to
the last couple of years.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
I think really just me trying to be consistent at
the plate and not you know, going up and changing
a bunch of things mid season, trying to you know,
go down rabbit holes, so you know, even if I
do have a bad game or two, just really trying
to stay within myself and my approach and folks on
what I can do rather than what the pictures shying
to to me.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
How often do you go up to the plate trying
to hit a home run.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Well, usually when I do, it doesn't work out very well.
So it's you know, the I guess the old saying,
you know, kind of happens by accident, so you know, pictures,
you know, you take advantage of the mistakes when they do.
And I'm just trying to square it up and hit
it through the middle of the field.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I think the most interesting. It's one of the interesting parts.
But how about the Mariners. You know, they sign him
in March to a six year, one hundred five million
dollar deal. It's got an extension for a twenty year
vested option whatever. But I mean there's a guy that
they drafted, that they developed, and that they bought into.
And look, I mean, one hundred five million dollars over
six years is a lot of money for you and me.
(06:58):
But in comparison to anybody else who's gonna hit forty
fifty home runs and I don't know if he can
do it every year, that's that's a ton monsie. Are
you predicting the falloff? Are you predicting the continued the
continued climb?
Speaker 5 (07:12):
I am not predicting the falloff, and maybe I am
being just optimistic here. Because I understand everything Jason was saying,
and typically another part that he did mention is, you know,
when you participate in a home run derby, you sometimes
lose it after that because, like you said, Doug Coach,
you don't really like it because it's not the same
type of pitch. So you obviously do something different in
the home run derby, which some people have you know,
(07:34):
said it changes them for the second half. But I'm
going to stay optimistic and I'm gonna say he continues
this and that he gives Aaron Judge a challenge for
the al MVP.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Sammy, where are you?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
What Jason shared a few minutes ago about these you
know a bray Who's drop off and Jack Peterson's drop off.
That was fascinating. I really didn't know about that, and
you know, all the factors he described is perhaps being
why these guys the numbers drop off in the second
half the year. I'm gonna say that maybe it's not
as severe as a drop off as that, but yeah,
he's not gonna hit in the second half of the
year another thirty plus home runs, you know, to be
(08:13):
up there with like you know, Aaron Judge, Barry Bonds
and Mark McGuire by the end of the year that
I don't think that's gonna happen. So hot start for him,
awesome to see it. Maybe he ends up with forty five,
forty seven, maybe like another fifteen home runs. I really
don't know. I'm just you know, we'll see. He's got
(08:35):
Jason to it.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Yeah again. And I was under the impression that Safeco
was not a home run hitters park, right they They
haven't changed the fences there, have they?
Speaker 5 (08:47):
Is that interest, isn't it that?
Speaker 1 (08:50):
It's interest now?
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Yeah, it's an interest. Sorry, yeah, in Atlanta, which is
why no, no, no, no, he plays some sell Oh
I thought you were talking about the home run derby
and it threw me off. Sorry, sorry, gotcha T mobile park.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Mobile. Yes, there was not a Safeco field from nineteen
ninety nine to twenty eighteen. Yeah, but I actually I thought.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Man, I mean, that's how I that's how much I
pay attention to see.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Generally considered it a picture of friendly park. And they
go to the all popular marine layer, the marine layer.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Which tends to stop balls from flying.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Slow them down. The air's a little thicker, more humid.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
It's the worst park in baseball. Uh, per what I'm
I'm looking at that This is per stat cast that
for for hitting, it's considered the hardest park in baseball
to hit home runs in.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Wow, that just makes it more impressive.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Oh well, there you go, so things you did not know.
It does make it more impressive. Now, I haven't seen
his splits in terms of home and road, but it's
there's always there. Does seem to always be a guy
like this, right, There always is a guy who's like, wait,
who has got how many? I don't know, I thought,
(10:14):
Jay Stu, as much as you've talked about it, there's
always usually as a like a rookie or a young guy.
I mean the Yankees. I remember Kevin Moss back in
the day. We've discussed this previously. What was the name
of the catcher with the Yankees, probably in that two
thousand and seventeen sort of still in the league, but
(10:36):
he was supposed to be the next and he came
up and had an unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Start to his career Gary Sanchez.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Gary Sanchez, that's right, Gary Sanchez. He had like twenty
six home runs in like fifty three games to start
his career.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Crazy perfect, Yes, example, catcher.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
And they and he wears down. Now you do have
the DH, and as you pointed out with the Dodgers,
you can't be a DH when you're the catch of
the Dodgers because Shoheyo Tani is a DH with the Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Correct. And the most home runs ever hit by a
catcher in a single season, well, sal Perez, I mean,
I'm trying to impress. I would have just said Forrez,
but I'm trying to impress Monsi sales he had forty eight,
but that's very misleading because Paris he played a lot
(11:27):
of first base and DH, so it's like, technically he's
the catcher that has that record, but he he split
time playing other things and that, and Rawley's been doing
the same thing. Rawley's got at least twenty games at DH.
That'll help him. Will Smith has to catch or he
doesn't play.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Something cool about being a catcher, right, I was a
catcher when I was when I was a kid, and
then as I when I got to high school, they
wanted me to play like second base and third base
and stuff, you know, like, oh, you get good hands
as a catcher, but you're too little. I was really
little growing up and not that I'm some gigantic dude now,
but back then, catchers were always like six two six
(12:07):
three sixty four, and I was no. I was nowhere
near that when I entered high school. But there is
something really cool to have in that gear and kind
of walking out doing your John Wayne walk out. You know,
somebody else catches the first couple, catches the warm ups
and you get out. You got the mic and then
you throw it coming down.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
You're like the you're you're, you're living, You're you have
a relationship with the picture. You know, you talk, you cool,
cool down, you know you. Yes, you have to give
them a little some words of wisdom, like, hey, maybe
this change us up. So yeah, definitely.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
He Hey, we're good, we're good. We're good. We're good. Here,
we're good here right breathe, breathe, mass. But you have
you have relationships with everybody there. Right. It's a it
fit me because it's a talker's position. You talk to them,
you talk to posy hitters, you talk to your you
talk to your picture.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
You know, just track them.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Hey you got two tudo tudo coming down. Two.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
But that's why there are many catchers in the Hall
of fame. There aren't many productive hitting catchers in the
history of the game because not only is the weather
wearing you down at a tough position every day where
you're squatting thousands of times a day, and then you
have to have all this stuff in your head. Most
of your focus has to be on handling the rotation,
(13:21):
knowing each pitcher's strength, and knowing every hitter strength. Like,
there's so much going through the mind of a catcher.
It's shocking that there's ever a catcher that has a
productive offense. But that's what kind of makes this guy's
season amazing. Will Smith is having a great season.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
Y and Cal Rawly has fourteen homers at home eighteen
on the very good nice stat Yeah, nice good stat.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
How many games he played at home? How many games
he playing the road?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I would say equal just a guess, just throwing that
out there, guessing.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Well, away he's at home, he's a one hundred and
forty at bats. Away he's had one hundred and fifty five.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Okay, so you said fourteen more opportunities, But that's phenomenal.
It's basically even although at those numbers, he's probably hitting
the home run every fourteen or so at bats right,
so that should be one more and it's at four more.
But yeah, the the the thick Seattle air.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Doesn't he also have the name that you would expect
to be like one of the lower level acts at stagecoach.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Cal Raley totally cal Raley. Cal Raley sings My nightmare
was her Honeymoon. I don't know that.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
You guys's name Morgan what Morgan Wallen, Margan Wallens.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
And cal Rawley opened for him.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Yeah, monster, you do you enjoy country music? I do,
but it's not that's a no.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I mean I I do, but I you know, it's
not my it's not what I'm cunning to.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
That's a no. It's okay to say it's not my jam,
but but I don't. For example, for example, Riley Green
is tomorrow night in Milwaukee at Summerfest. If anybody knows
anything about Wisconsin, Summerfest is everything. Okay. When I say
Riley Green, are you like, do you know who that is?
Speaker 6 (15:17):
No?
Speaker 5 (15:18):
I I assume it's a baseball player. Initially, okay, I
thought you were Oh, okay, I thought was a musical artist.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I was like, no, no, no, no, no. Cal Raley actually
plays tomorrow night in Milwaukee. Honestly, Riley Green could be
an SEC football player. You know, probably what probably quarterback,
right man. Do you see Riley Green play for the Gators.
I like that. I like that kid. He can really throw. Now,
Riley Green is a super hot country musician. When I
(15:45):
say he is, he's a good looking man as well.
But I said hot, it's more a very poppy yes.
And he's got like he's he's got he's known for.
I think he may have shaved it, but he had
like a he had a magnum p. I must ask.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
I will listen to.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
Okay, okay, mister Green. You know cal Rawley's opening up for.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Doug Ottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio with Montsey Blanius's new crush,
Riley Green play in the background. We'll get to Mark
Stein in a second. Of course. Mark Mark's a long
time NBA writer. He writes a substack called the Steinline.
I would just if you want to know what's going
on the NBA. He's the guy but this Ace Bailey
(16:45):
story is fascinating, right because he didn't work out for teams,
gets drafted by Utah, agent says he doesn't want play
for Utah, and Danny Ainge is like, drafted you, we
got your rights, not not going anywhere, and it's really interesting.
Let's let's bring to Mark Stein who joins us and
Mark obviously there's a bunch of other things to get
(17:06):
through with the draft, and some of the trades have
been made, and some of the trades are rumored to
be made, but let's start with Ace Bailey, Like, what's
the logic behind saying like I don't want to go
to Utah Jazz.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
Look, Keith Carden the first player we've ever seen who
wants to try to control his destination. I mean, that's
that's really not new. And look, I think ultimately he
will be in Utah. I think someone in his camp
today didn't interview where they basically said he will be
going there. And look, it's funny. Austin Ainge was adamant
(17:42):
before the draft, and of course he's the new shot
caller in Utah. He was adamant that if East Bailey
is the player they like and they want they'll take him,
and they did it, and so you know, it's a
fun story. I guess it's a noisy story. But just
at the end of the day, look, Utah has to
do They have to go the best available player route.
(18:04):
If they think that Ace Bailey has the most upside
when he reaches them at number five, they've got to
do it. Because remember Utah had the worst record in
the league this year. They were seventeen and sixty five.
Second year in a row, or second time in three years. Actually,
I remember the Wemby Draft. You know, Detroit had the
worst record in the league and fell all the way
to number five, and the same thing happened to the Jazz.
(18:26):
They had the worst record in the league. They fell
as far in the lottery as they could, they end
up at number five. So their position is, we're going
to take Ace Bailey where he likes it or not,
and you know, hope he can be the high lottery
selection who hits, because I mean, this is a Jazz
team that desperately needs it. Again, they were seventeen and
(18:47):
sixty five. They're in the West, which only gets deeper
and more nightmarish. They really need this pick to hit.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
Okay, but let me go back. Why don't they put
why Utah? Specifically? Do you not want to why do
y'all want to play Utah?
Speaker 7 (19:03):
Okay, Well that's the trickier one for me to answer, because,
you know, trying to get a read on exactly what
his camp wants. I don't. I mean, the whole league's
been trying to do that. You know, he had a
work scheduled, so she's scheduled with the Sixers and canceled
it at the eleventh hour. And the unusual part, what
is unusual? I mean we didn't see a S. Bailey
(19:24):
do a private workout with anyone before the draft. So
all the intel before the draft was he has the
destination in mind, whether that's Washington at number six, some
thought it might be Brooklyn at number eight. You know,
he had the team in mind he wanted to go to.
Will that team ever be revealed possibly exactly where he
(19:46):
wanted to go at this point, But I'm just speaking.
I'm just looking at it from the approach of I
like what Utah did saying we've got to do what
we think is best for us, and we will. I
think we're kind of passed to be you and I
(20:06):
were kids. We saw we saw players kind of force
their way out of destinations all the time, but it
doesn't really happen in the modern day. I mean, Steve
Francis didn't want to play in Vancouver and ended up
in Houston, but even that was a quarter century ago.
I mean, it just it doesn't really happen in the
modern day.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
It doesn't, And it's interesting. So many of these stars
are stars in smaller markets, So I don't really understand
the logic behind it, but maybe that's one that that
they ultimately have to answer. Stug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Otherwise, draft relatively as news, with the
exception of Cooper Flag, I don't.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
Know about that. I don't know about that. I think actually,
like yeah, gorg Deman going adn't see that happening. Jan
Hanson going sixteen definitely did not see that happening. And
I think there, look, we didn't yet. The only trade
we saw that involved a veteran player was Mark Williams
going to Phoenix. But I think that even that has
become somewhat standard on Draft night, that on Draft night,
(21:10):
the focus is going to be the picks getting exchanged.
And the players getting exchanged. I mean before we did
see five really significant trades, you know, before the draft,
and four of them from Sunday to Wednesday. So I
would say it's been a pretty wild week. But I'm
guessing I'm inferring from this tone now, I'm kind of
(21:33):
I'm kind of tricking you into a battle here. I
love the two Night Draft. I'm going to predict that
The Gottlieb Show does not love the two Night Draft.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
No, I don't. I mean, look, I know I did
the draft for years when we were together at ESPN,
and the second round was was too fast, and there's
so many trades, and you know, like who goes where?
So I do get it. And they're trying to meet.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
And that's that's exactly it.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
And they're trying to also make it like the NFL,
and I'm sure they can probably make more money off it.
But I mean, the NBA Draft is a shell of
its former self. It had a duke player who was
the number one pick, the number one kid in high school,
and everybody loves and yet the draft was It's like,
am I interested by that stuff? Yeah? Are you? Yeah?
Is most of America not even close?
Speaker 8 (22:20):
Right?
Speaker 1 (22:21):
I mean again, like, don't believe me, we're two basketball guys.
We're too basketball guys. Wait, Jason Stewart any any interest at.
Speaker 7 (22:27):
All in last night's draft, I mean, I guess, but like,
I don't think the second night of the draft is
designed to be some money making bonanza because like I
do think basketball devotay's they care about second round picks
as much as they care about first round picks. And
(22:49):
I would also say, like not just doing it all
on one night is impossible because the second round is
a circus, as you rightly said, and then on that
you have all the guys who don't get drafted, like
ryan Nebhart ending up to Dallas with a two way
Like even that is something that I think basketball fans
really care about. So to me, breaking it up in
(23:11):
two days, I much prefer it. I mean, the second
night is not some amazing television spectacle, but I don't
think it needs to be. I think, for you know,
it's it's it is way doing sixty players and then
two way deals and summer league deals and all that,
like that is way too much to do in one night.
(23:32):
I mean, those nights were going well past midnight and
it's just, it's just it's just it's just like why
free agency got moved from midnight to six pm on
June thirtieth, because why are you doing something that does
interest fans so much after midnight? It does doesn't make
any sense.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
That's fair, that's fair. Okay, Let let's talk about some
of these teams. Austin Reeves turns down ninety million dollars,
meaning he wants to get paid paid next next year.
So what do the Lakers do.
Speaker 7 (24:05):
Well, look, they want to keep him. I don't think
they want to lose him, and I don't really think
it was a surprise that he turned that deal down
because he knows if he goes to the open market.
I mean, the Lakers got him. The last deal they
signed him to was an absolute steal, and Reeves outpourm
perform that contract by a mile. So like it just
(24:26):
it it makes sense for him to turn this down,
play it out. Either they do an you know, if
they can't do an extension now, which you know, again
they're limited by the math that they can do, go
to free agency. I mean, the reality is that the
Lakers have very limited flexibility, and they knew that would
be the case. This offseason, they're going to try, they're
going to try to make something happen, and they're going
(24:46):
to try to upgrade the roster through trades. But it's
just it's just not that easy because of the finances
that they had. And look, you know, they they made
the trade for Mark Williams, they rescinded that trade and
now we've seen Phoenix go ahead and trade for him.
So I'll be very interesting to see how Mark Williams
looks once he gets the Phoenix, and you know if
(25:08):
the Lakers were correct to recind the deal or if
they will come to regret it, because a rim running
center is what Luka Doncic needs next to him, and
the Lakers at president don't have one.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
No, no, they don't. And you know they need help
for defense because they have some they have some immobile defenders,
and that'll be interesting to see what that looks like.
Let's go back to Dallas and to Cooper Flag. We've
talked you and I on the show talked a lot
about Nico and and how everybody jumps ship when they
(25:43):
trade away Luca. Obviously, it's pure luck to be able
to get Cooper Flag. What's the status of Nico now
in the Metroplex.
Speaker 7 (25:54):
I mean, I wouldn't say the reading on him or
for him has changed much, if at all. I mean, obviously,
Mavericks fans are super super excited to have Cooper Flag
and super super excited to have something to celebrate. I mean,
they've been miserable for months. As I think we've covered
(26:14):
many times already. I've never seen a fan base react
to a trade like I've seen the fan base here
in Dallas. And it is still a wounded fan base.
But after forty years of horrendous lottery, look, they finally
moved up in the lottery. And they didn't just move up,
they moved up from eleven to one. A player who
(26:35):
just has incredible ability to he can be a two
way monster. That's what everyone says, and you hear Jason
Kidd today is press conference talking about Cooper Flags being
introduced to the local media, and Jason Kidd is basically saying,
I cannot wait for Summer League to start because I'm
going to play him at the point and put the
ball in his hands and follow the script that he
(26:58):
used in Milwaukee to hasten anasat the Kompo's development. I
don't think we're going to see Cooper playing an outright
point guard playing is an outright point guard when the
season starts, But he's going to have the ball in
his hands. He is going to have point forward opportunities
because the reality is the MAVs are not going to
see till January or February at the earliest. And look,
(27:22):
the deal Kyrie Irving did this week does give them
a little bit of financial flexibility Fountain free agency and
sign someone like the Angelo Russell to step in as
a stop gap starter for the first half of the season.
But I think we're going to see Cooper flat. You know,
Jason Kidd is going to give him every opportunity to
have the ball in his hands, and that's going to
(27:43):
be very interesting viewing.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Stug gotleep show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, what's
going on with the next coaching service? Like James Brago,
You went from guys that you know had gone further
than the Conference finals when you're interviewing him, to now
guys that have not Where do they land in your opinion?
Speaker 7 (28:04):
Well, they're taking their suite and they have the only
vacancy in the league. They have no reason to rush
and the reality, Look, this is the corner they've painted
themselves into, and they've talked to some good coaches, Mike Brown,
Taylor Jenkins, James Brego, Mike and Norri in Minnesota. They're
good coaches, but there's no one they can hire who
(28:28):
is going to appease the fans. Who you know Tom Thibodeau,
No matter where you sit on Tom Thibodeau, he is
the most successful coach they've had in the twenty first century.
And if you're going to oust him as swiftly as
they did after the season ended, you have to hire
someone that the public perceives as a clear upgrade. And
(28:50):
it's really hard to see how the Knicks are going
to do that right now, and it's going to be
it's very hard to see the Knicks are going to
be able to make a case to their fans that
whoever it is that they hire is not their sixth
choice at best, because they requested permission to talk to
five coaches and they were turned down. So this is
what I think is the most frustrating aspect of this search,
(29:12):
if you're watching it from afar, is that the Knicks
just continue to give off the vibe that they really
didn't have a succession plan set up, and so that's
the part that makes so.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
What were they so? Again, you you only do that
when you're when you're ticked off, right, and that it
feels like Dolan who had who had given away you know,
power of running it, you know, to the to the
power structure to Leon Rose. But what what because you
only fire a guy and don't have a succession plan
when something ticks you off? What was it tip? To
(29:49):
tick them off? So much about tips?
Speaker 7 (29:51):
I mean, look from the Dolan perspective, I don't know
that he ever wanted Tom Thibodeau as his coach. I
think that was Leon Rose's decision decision. Leon Rose is
higher and like I said, Tom Thibodeau is the most
successful coach they've had in the twenty first century, hands down,
and I but there was certainly frustration with how he
(30:14):
used his bench, did he use enough of his bench,
his willingness to collaborate with other powerbrokers in the organization.
But again, they can list all the reasons they want.
If you can't hire a coach who's more accomplished than
Tom Thibodeo, you're going to have some questions to answer
and the fans, you know, like I'm sure, you know,
(30:36):
maybe it hasn't quite reached the state of full on
impatience because again they're not competing with anybody else. But
you know, unless someone they went for before becomes available,
Like I just don't know how they sell whoever it
is they ultimately choose, And it's like to me, they're
(30:56):
dragging it out and taking it extra slow, kind of
hoping for some sort of miracle.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
Last thing, Johannis, give me the percentage chance that he's
with the Bucks started next season.
Speaker 7 (31:11):
I mean, look, there's no way I can ballpark it,
because only he knows what his plans are. If if
if underline, if if he reaches that he wants to
seek pastors new By all accounts, it's not going to
happen until after free agency at some later point this summer.
All I can tell you is the Bucks are operating
(31:32):
under the premise that he will be there, that he
is not asked out, and that he will not ask out,
and they are trying to improve their team to the
best ability they can now on July fifteenth, on July
thirty first, is he going to look at the roster
and say, you know what, I gave him a chance.
I don't like the looks, only only he can. And
(31:55):
the rest of it, realistically is guesswork at this point,
and we're just gonna have to wait and see how
it plays out.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
He's Mark Stein. Check out the Stein line. It's a substack.

to Monts to Beolagno's for the press, the press, what
are you got there? Months?
Speaker 7 (32:50):
All right?
Speaker 5 (32:51):
Coach, Well, we saw video already of Cooper flag landing
in Dallas, and he spoke to the media today and
so did his head coach New One, Jason Kid.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
This is what kids say.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
About how he plans to you know, coach, Cooper Flag,
I want to put.
Speaker 8 (33:05):
Him in the at the point guard. I want to
make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts being able
to run the show, being able to play the two,
play the three. He's he's comfortable playing that, but we
want to push and I think he's going to respond
in a positive way. It's all right to fail. It's
(33:28):
all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that,
you know, just understanding the guys that I've been around
that are being young from Giannis giving him the ball
and he failed, but he wanted to come back and
have the ball. So I'm excited about giving him the
ball against the Lakers and see what happens.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Coach, what do you make of that? Coach?
Speaker 1 (33:50):
I mean, that's that's and you're going to develop young guys,
you got to allow them the ability to make mistakes.
And again, that's part of the part of the great
thing about when you're drafting a bad team is you're
allowed to play through mistakes. A good team, your role
is a little bit different. And what Jason kidds trying
to say is like, Hey, I'm gonna try to do
the best of both worlds. I'm gonna let you play
through some mistakes. We're still gonna be playing to win.
(34:13):
And then, of course, the great thing about the NBA
is you don't have to be the best team in
the regular season to be the best team in the postseason,
right right.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
Funny how he says that he wants to make Cooper
fly play point guard.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
This is what Cooper Flygg had to say about their roster,
this a.
Speaker 9 (34:27):
Versus opposition, you know, doing a lot of different things.
I think, you know, with the team looking at the roster,
we can play a really good brand of positionless basketball
with a lot of guys, I can do a lot
of different things. So I think that would be one of,
you know, the biggest strengths. And I think just trying
to play to that and just doing whatever I can
to help the team win.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Position Yeah, positionless basketball, we try and do that. I mean,
that's most teams in the NBA. I will say though
that while there there is a positionless there's a difference
at point guard. And look, Jason KiB would know he's
one of the great point guards in its thor of
the game. But yeah, I don't want to have Cooper
flag coming off of ball screens. That's I don't think
(35:03):
where he's at his best. Yeah, yeah, so is it
ever seen bringing the ball up the court and being
a point guard? And I think more of the former
than the latter.
Speaker 5 (35:13):
All right, coach, moving on here, what did you make
of the Toronto Raptors partying ways with massaia u Juri
Thirteen seasons later? You know, the Raptors went thirty and
fifty two this past season, missed the postseason for the
third straight year.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
I feel like there were mixed reviews.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
Some people thought it was shocking and others are like, well,
he's riding on one championship from several five years ago.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
Yeah, and they were there. They were there several times,
closed several times, and they got Kawhi Leonard went over
the top. I mean, obviously the guy you know built
it into a monster, but trying to rebuild it when
you lose guys is hard. I mean, That's that's really
where Sam Presty has separated himself in that they've had
a couple of different waves of quality teams. Remember the
(35:54):
Oklahoma City only won I think twenty four games three
years ago and now they're a champion. I think it
was the frustrat over the time it took to rebuild.
And I think the other part about it was, you know,
MASSI let's just say he grew very confident after their
championship season, and I don't know if it rubbed everybody.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
The right way right right?
Speaker 5 (36:15):
Moving on here to college basketball. Women's college basketball, Aeron
Tory is our coworker with the story. So, for the
first time since twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen season, Yukon women's
basketball and South Carolina will not be meeting in the
regular season. So this long standing non conference regular season
series comes to an end. And I don't know why
I try to dive into it. If it was Yukon
(36:37):
who said no, if it was South Carolina who said no,
is this a big deal?
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Little deal, no deal, I would just tell you this
that Yukon came in and whooped South Carolina. They did
what last year? So that plays into it?
Speaker 5 (36:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (36:51):
No, I I yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
He goes get involved with scheduling. I'm worried about our schedule,
not about South Carolina. And if they don't want to play,
they don't want to play, don't.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
Care will you Will you guys play one of those
two teams.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
No, we're playing Kansas first game of the year. That's enough.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
I mean you can if you want to. It's pretty stupid,
all right. That's the press. They get out there and pressed.
Speaker 6 (37:22):
That was the press.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
You know, we do play in the US Virgin Islands.
What do you guys think about a remote from the
US Virgin Islands?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Which island St? Thomas, Saint John's.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
I think St. Thomas is the US Virgin Islands. Saint
John's is the.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
No, they're both, they're both American. I think patmos on St.
John's isn't.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Very good.
Speaker 8 (37:46):
Nicely done.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
You have a great weekend. Fox Sports Radio
