Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, all right, this is the Doug Gottli Show.
Years in the Bonus with Doug Gottli, I got about
it as a Fox Sports radio what's up to you?
I hope you're doing great Doug gottlim show. You're on
Fox Sports. Trading in the bonus is the podcast. So look,
(00:23):
today is Sweet sixteen Day, and you know what I
try and provide for you is something that no one
else can give you. Right, my opinions are my own,
no one else can give you it. And also my
stories are my own. This particular story of the Sweet
sixteen is something that I lived. I lived, So is
(00:44):
there another national radio host? I do think and I
understand it's a hard sport to follow and in many
ways to cover for people who cover all sports because
it is fairly niche sheet. It's become more and more
niche sheet throughout throughout my lifetime I'm in even my
professional career. But it's like pure comedy listening to people
(01:06):
try and cover something they literally have no idea about.
So what I thought I'd provide for you today is
what this is really like. And the Sweet sixteen is awesome.
I did not play in the final four and It's
what makes the Sweet Sixteen so difficult is every team
is sitting in their hotel room right now thinking, if
we win two games, we're in the final. Four, win
(01:26):
four games, win the national championship, and like four games
if you grew up playing au, that's two days. That's
that's a weekend of ball, sometimes a day of ball,
you know, and you're like, man, I'll get four games,
and then if you win this game. What they do
in between before the Elite Eight is that day off,
the all the writers and all the stories. They have
to have them done by the time the game goes
(01:48):
final on Sunday, because well, next Monday and Tuesday, it's
too late you play to play catch up and write
a story. So here's the story that I'll give you
of why it's so hard to watch and to feel
in any way critical of how kids react when things
are going poorly or whatever. My last weekend playing college
basketball was in Syracuse, New York. We had won our
(02:09):
first and second round games in Buffalo, New York, and
our coach and we played I think we played, I
think we played Friday Sunday, and because of it, when
we were done Sunday afternoon, there was actually a hockey
game that night and our coach, Coach Sutton, are late.
Eddie Sutton. He's like, look, you guys, can you guys
can go home and be home for a day, turn around,
(02:30):
come back, or we can all stay here. And we're
all just like we want to stay here. And I
would say that mistake. That was a mistake because we
really had that. It was just too long on the road.
You know, we needed to go home, kind of collect
ourselves and get ready and really honestly get away from basketball.
That day of travel. You kind of get away from basketball.
Kind of needed that because we got worn down. Guys
(02:51):
got sick by the Sweet sixteen, by the Elite eight game.
But it also, you know, created we always had great
friendships for life, but it's a different level there because
it really you're on this incredible path to something special.
But I remember we went to a hockey game where
we saw the Buffalo Sabers. Then we all kind of
(03:13):
bought a bunch of different Canadian beer and decided we're
going to try a Canadian beer tonight night at our
hotel rooms. And then we would we do something during
the day to occupy our times and then we'd have
practice at a I think it was a Division three
school close to Canisius, and then we end up going
to Syracuse. But the reason that it's so hard is
(03:36):
a Grant Wall who passed away this year or was
it last year? Last year during the World Cup? Right?
Or was that that was that was this year? Right?
I think that was the World Cup was this year.
So Grant Wall was then a burging writer for sports
Illustry as a Princeton lum, and he was writing a
story on me, and I was told he was like, look,
I think this is gonna be really good. I think
(03:57):
it's gonna be a cover story. And you have to
remember back then, this is in two thousand, sports illustry
was still it, right. Websites were starting to pop up,
but sports Illustrty was still the ship, and you only
followed me around. And my girlfriend at the time ended
up becoming my wife shortly thereafter. Like she was there,
my family was there, my brother was there, my sister
(04:18):
was there, and you know all the different little kind
of quirky things about me, but also about you know,
coaches this time of year with they'll take you to
go back to your room and you're not allowed to
get out of your bed, and you know, you get
rest of your legs, and the things we do late
at night, and the phone calls to each other on
the hotel phone. This is before you know we had
cell phones, but like I had a five hundred minute limit,
you know, so you'd call me, but I wasn't calling
(04:39):
you back. And then you realize when you lose the game,
the last game, that all those stories that were set
to be written won't be written today, won't be written ever,
you know, forever, go down in Grant Wall's notes as
what could have been a cover story. So when you win,
(05:00):
you win kind of immortality. You're part of the Final four.
You're part of basketball immortality. When you lose, it's like
fourth placed the Olympics in hill, nobody cares, nobody cares.
Quick picks tonight, I think Tennessee wears down and it's
too much for Florida Atlantic. I do think Florida Lanta's
got a punchers chance. They can really score, they can
really play in the perimeter. But I do think Tennessee
(05:21):
is really physical, really dynamic, with the level of depth
of physicality, I don't know if they can score that much,
but I think they can slow the pace, and I
think Michigan State beats Kansas State. I like Marquis Noel
like no other player may be in college basketball. He's awesome.
But I do think that the time to prepare Michigan
State a little bit more rugged, a little bit more
(05:42):
built for this, a little bit more lineup versatility, a
couple more guys that can play. I'm gonna take Michigan
State there in the other in the in the Vegas Games,
I like Yukon and I like Gonzaga. Like Gonzaga, I
would like UCLA if they're a full straight, but they're not.
I'll take Zach. Let's get to what the Fox says,
(06:03):
and now the Fox say. The Gottlieb Show podcast here
called in the Bonus Care of Fox Sports Radio and
the iHeartRadio app. What we do with what the Fox
said is things that we've heard said earlier on Fox
Sports Radio and we comment on them. Here's Dan Patrick
(06:24):
talking about the controversial ending to the Warriors Mavericks game
last night. Mark Cuban Luca don Chick both had problems
with this. Cuban gets up out of his seat and
goes to the scoreboard or on the score gun gun
and he the scores table. That should be a fine
right there, but he was critical of this. Luke at
(06:50):
one point gives the money sign as if he's, you know,
the officials getting paid, and we saw that on TV,
and I'm gonna guess that's gonna it's gonna call him
money Cuban. It's going to cost him money and the officials.
I can understand where there's confusion, but this is late
in the third quarter, and to me, okay, you missed
(07:13):
the call on Luca being pulled down. The MAVs are
using this as a scapegoat and they lost the game.
They lost a home game, and they are using something
at the end of the third quarter. Bad call. Okay,
they missed a call. Okay, confusion who was getting the ball?
Where were they getting the ball? But don't blame this
(07:36):
loss on that call, because now you're making that that's
the scapegoat for you guys, not beating a Warrior's team.
That's terrible on the road, but it's gonna cost Cuban
and it's gonna cost Luca. The under protest thing is fabulous, right, Like,
I haven't heard that since the little league, you know,
(07:58):
when somebody may have left third base tagging up a
little bit. Truly, we want there's another protest. Um I'm
I'm I'm with Dan on this one. Is and and like, look,
we got Trey Young coming out today. These officials need
to be held accountable. They're being held accountable. They're also
human beings. He's like, well, they make a mistake. Like, dude,
(08:18):
you miss make mistakes all the time. We just we've
created this narrative where they're gonna miss calls and somehow
like what they they're supposed to be fired. You're gonna
run out of reps. You run reps. And I get
your level of frustration, But first of all, Luca complains
about every fucking call there is, Like, dude, you just
you have to give it a rest. I have to
(08:41):
give it a rest. You're you're like all of the
Spurs who used to complain multiplied by like three or four.
That's how obnoxious you are, no matter how talented you are.
So um yeah, I just think it's really fascinating to
me that you're actually doing more harm to your own team,
(09:04):
because like, look, officials, at the end of the day,
they talk, they're a group, and you know, if it's
a fifty thing fifty thing, you're like, fuck those dudes.
It's very natural human nature. Like we're asking them to
be completely in totally neutral, and I think for the
most part they are. But they're also human beings. And
you're like, look, you're gonna call in a question we
do like you want a question to call Like, that's fine.
(09:25):
You want to do the money sign? Like are you
kidding me? Luca? Dude, Lucas going to be suspended for
a good amount of time. You can't do that. Can't
do it. You're not a fanboy. You're an NBA superstar.
It's not how you act. Here's Jonas Knox in the
bar Arrington talk about the latest moves by the Patriots.
So Juju Smith Schuster, who's a brand new player for
(09:45):
the New England Patriots, just by the way, very odd
fit considering how much he loves snap face and TikTok
and all those other you know apps and making these
like you know, fake hostage videos and music video and
all the other crap that he puts out there. It's
odd that he would choose New England because that doesn't
(10:06):
seem like the type of place it would be okay
with all that stuff happening, it is odd, but they
chose him too. Yeah, I mean that's kind of Listen,
things ain't what they used to be in New England.
So if you feel like Juju Smith Schuster can improve
(10:26):
your roster, then and and that's who you're going after.
I mean, I would have never thought that that would
have been a landing place for Cam Newton. Like he's
a he's a very colorful personality, a very independent thinker,
and how he does things and not easily swayed his influences,
(10:47):
his influence, and he lives the way that he lives.
I would have thought that that would have been a
nightmare matchup and and and Bill Belichick loved him and
seemingly up till the end, Cam Newton loved you know,
the Patriots. So I think things are changing in New England.
(11:08):
I don't think anything has been how it's how it's
perceived to be. You know, it's not some you know,
former Patriots like their time with the Patriots. Is it
that much fun? Probably not? But winning is a lot
more fun than losing, So that doesn't that doesn't actually matter.
That doesn't matter anyway. So there's just a lot to it,
but you know there's this perception that no one with
(11:31):
a personality goes there. By the way, there's plenty of
guys that were with the Patriots are now on television,
so there actually is an endgame to it if you
can be successful. Jujus Miss Schuster though, needed a place
to play. Like sometimes it's about we make it about
things that it's not. Am I going to get the football? Right?
Am I gonna get the football? And I'm We're going
(11:52):
to play in a system that fits me. That's it,
That's what it's about. Uh. This was earlier today on
The Herd with Colin Cowherd talking about Lamar Jackson. Is
Lamar Jackson becoming Kawhi Leonard think about it? Unquestionably top
(12:13):
ten franchise talents. Neither trusts anybody. Kawhi uses uncle Dennis
as his agent. Lamar used his mom and now an
unlicensed agent. They've got a trust issue. Both have had injuries,
and around both injuries there's nothing but mystery. Both in
college were overlooked and have a chip on their shoulder.
(12:37):
Both land and ideal situations. Kawhi Leonard, who's not real verbal,
goes to San Antonio, very quiet about the culture, not
the stars, perfect situation. Lamar goes to the Ravens, exceptionally
well run defense, run game, patient, letting him grow with
(12:58):
Flacco for a year. But yet by like year four
or five with Kawhi Leonard, it got odd and he
got hurt and there was mystery and we never really
got a straight answer. And now in year three or
four for Lamar Jackson, he's hurt and there's mystery and
it's odd and we never really got a straight answer.
(13:22):
Could he have played. I thought he was ready to
play in late December. Then he never played the kind
of becoming the same guy. Kawai's an enigma, so was
Lamar Jackson. None of us, none of us would question
their franchise worthy. But they have very unique personalities, and
(13:42):
I'm not sure either personality translates the long term success
or leadership. Well, I think Colin hit a home run there.
I can be critical of things I disagree with, but
I think there's a lot of things. The number one
thing he hit up was they were actually drafted by
a perfect fit organization. And what happens is you get
(14:06):
caught up in other things that don't matter, and you
lose sight of the main thing, which is is this
a place where is this a place that knows who
I am, how I am and I can function at
my absolute optimum level. That has been the case for
Kawhi Leonard when he was in San Antonio. That is
the case with Baltimore and Lamar Jackson. So I agree
(14:27):
with I agree with him, And then you know what
ends up happening is you end up chasing kind of
happiness and trying to find a better fit, and you
you go to organizations, you know, like Aaron Rodgers to
the Jets that have no history of success, and it
can be hard. It's it's really hard to teach everybody
else how to win when everybody knows how to win,
(14:48):
knows how to win previous to that. So I'm with
him on this. Say, let's find out who's annoying and
now it's your annoying mother, Ryan b who's annoying you today?
(15:10):
All right, let's start off with team Morant. Obviously, John
Morant returned for the Grizzlies last night, and Tea Morant
and Uncle Phil were there courtside with shirts that said
Redemption with pictures of John them. I believe that's him
talking to his uncle a picture of him on the
sideline in the previous game. UM. I find this annoying
(15:31):
because it feels kind of ridiculous, right like this, this
idea of a redemption tour for John Morant for just
simply being an idiot. I don't know, I want to
know what your thoughts were on this, uh, this attempt
to capitalize on this. Um. I thought it was funny
that he had Gatorade instead of his red Solo cup
(15:51):
that he normally has. Right, he's not you know, like
is he this is like his own personal lent that
he's gonna give up booze as well. There's there's a
lot to it, you know. I don't know. I just
there's a lot going on. You know what's interesting is
people turn this into you know, I kind of went
(16:12):
off on idiot fucking Memphis Grizzly fans, and you know,
I'll continue to do so here because you make it
out like we don't like John Morand, which is nothing
could be further from the case, Like everybody actually really
likes John Morand he's just acting like a fucking idiot
before you know, that's it. That's just stop acting like
an idiot. When Steven Adams calls a team meeting to say,
(16:34):
stop acting like a fucking idiot, I'm gonna take his
word for it over some han yuck in Memphis who
just likes the Grizzlies and thinks somehow we're against Memphis. Like,
nobody gives this shit about your city or about your team.
It's not the way that it operates. We actually care
about the dude. He's going to be, you know, potentially
the next phase of the league. Let's try and not
be a complete and total fucking clown while doing it.
(16:56):
So the Redemption Tour, I don't know, it's a it's
a little much. It's a little much. But you know,
if if it's a real thing and he's really trying
to redeem himself, I can't hate on it as much
as you're hating on it, you know, and say it's annoying.
Is John Morand's dad annoying? Yes, yes, he's annoying, Like
you're just the dad. You're just the dad, you know.
(17:20):
And if there was a little bit more personal accountability,
I should have done more. I should have been a
little bit you know, more of a because there have
been people that' been critical of John Morand's dad many
times here recently, I haven't, you know, But again, it's
not my kids, so I don't know the dynamics of
their relationship. I do think that if you're around your
kid that much and he's acting a fool, you got
to tell him you're acting a fool, dude. But you
(17:42):
also have to not you know, be caught up in
the infatuation with fame, which you know, he's on the
he's on the fame bus. Yeah, I get the criticism
of him. If it's a family wide redemption tour, I'm
actually kind of for it. So I can't say it's
that annoying. Let's just see if it's if it's a
real thing or it's just you know, hey, we're going
to create a different image on TV here. Who else?
(18:04):
Who else you got? So as you saw, Micole Hardman
signed with the Jets yesterday and Adam Schefter tweeted out
the Jets now add a player to run jet sweeps
and more so. Micole Hardman responded, saying way more than
jet sweeps. In fact, ESPN Stats and Info pointed out
that since twenty nineteen, the only wide receiver to average
more yards after the catch per reception than Micole Hardman
(18:27):
is Deebo Samuel. So, Adam Schefter, You're you're not funny here,
You're you're just being annoying. Um, can I defend Chefty here? Yeah?
Go ahead? Okay, So you just mentioned Deebo Samuel. What
do they do with Diebo Samuel? I mean, you know,
Micole Harman, what they do desided to jet sweeps. They
do those pop passes where it's basically a jet sweep,
(18:48):
only you're in the shotgun and he comes in emotion
you hit him. That's actually considered a complete pass. And
and that's why you have yak so which is it's
just a weird Do we consider that? A PA asked,
is it running the football? I just like you take
we take Schefter like, Schefter's not an analyst. He's just
(19:08):
reporting what somebody told him and so whoever told him that?
And add he's not good at trying to add color
to it. I get it. I understand it's a little
bit annoying, but I would actually find it more annoying
than McCole Hardman. Gives a fuck about Adam Schefter and
his tweet? Why do you you just got you just
got a new check and you get to play with
Aaron Rodgers. Why do you care? You know, doesn't make
(19:32):
any sense to me. I actually think mcole Hardman's annoying
in that that case, Why do you have? Rabbit of years?
Guy tweeted out that you're getting money, he got a
new contract. It has no effect on your life. Why
do you care? What else? Us? The last one here
yesterday Dick van Dyke was trending on Twitter for a
short period and it was because he crashed into a
gate at his house. He's ninety seven years old. Yeah,
(19:54):
you know, probably shouldn't be driving as much anymore. But um,
whenever an older celebrity trends on Twitter, you click on
that trend and all it is is tweets of saying
I saw so and so trending and I thought they died.
And then it's a bunch of Denzel gifts, and it's
a bunch of people making the same joke over and
over and over again. And unfortunately, like this would happen
(20:16):
with Betty White all the time and then one day
she actually died. So you're annoying if you're jumping on
this trend of just tweeting about a celebrity, because the
trend itself is only people tweeting saying, oh I saw
them trending and I just wanted I think like ten
percent of them are actually concerned and the rest of
them are just trying to trying to join in and
(20:36):
trying to be seen as cool and caring. Yeah, I
agree with you, I'm with you. That's Twitter people. Voluting
between trying to be funny and trying to be caring
is just obnoxious. So if that's it Twitter people, Yeah,
all right, that's it for In the bonus, we gave
(20:57):
you some picks in the open, We gave you a
lot of different stuff to salivate on. Hope you enjoy
the Sweet sixteen. I'm Doug gottliebiss Is Foxport Radio.
