Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Radio. Well, come in, it's the Doug Gottlieb Show. It's
Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're doing great. The Doug
Gottlieb Show broadcast live every day from the tyrack dot

(00:32):
Com studios. And it's interesting. I'm not gonna disclose my
location in terms of the actual physical location, but I'm
in the auto shop of a high school top that one.
Have you have We ever had a podcast or radio
show broadcast from the autoshop of high school. It's tire
rack dot Com and we can do our own tire

(00:52):
rack right here. I could go out. There is a
there's an F one fifty crew cab now one fifty
that's standard cap that apparently the students at this high
school must have worked on before they went out for
summer vacation and left. We could go to the We
could literally have a tyreq here and we call tyrak

(01:15):
and get some new sturs.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
There's been a lot of discussion over JJ Reddick getting
the Lakers job. It's been a day. It broke right
before we went on the air, and I just I'll
leave you with this, like, look, do guys are known
as being arrogant? JJ has more than a tinge of arrogance,
But he's very bright. He's already he's connected, obviously with

(01:38):
his team's best player. They do have a history of
success from a guy with very limited or no coaching experience.
In pat Riley, he was pretty prett damn good. And
to me, the one question I would ask you if
you don't like the JJ Reddick high is do you
have somebody you know who would be better? Do you

(02:03):
have somebody you know who's out there who would be better?
And in order to be better, you have to, among
other things, have the respect of the locker room, especially
your best player. It helps if you've played in the league,
and of course it helps if you've been on a
championship team or coach on a championship team. Now he
hasn't been on a championship team, he hasn't coached in

(02:24):
the league, but he's respected and the best player respects
him as well. I think it's now more about what
they do personnel wise than than what they than the
fact that they hired JJ Reddick. But my point is,
and we'll get to this little later on in the
podcast is like, you know, it's the old if not,
if not now when? If not, if not not us,

(02:46):
then who? If not JJ Reddick, then who who would
you have hired? I mean, I love Jeff van Gundy,
but what does that work with Lebron James? Probably not?
Like there's lots of names you can throw out there,
be like, what does that work with Anthony Davis Lebron James?
Probably not? So to get guy who's been a really
good coach in the NBA would be phenomenal stuff. Phenomenal stuff.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Let's to get to what the Fox says, and now.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
I say.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Here's Dan Patrick talking about JJ Reddick and whether or
not he should be able to continue his podcast with Lebron?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Do you continue your podcast with Lebron? Like that's a
big question, Mark, can you continue a podcast with Lebron
while coaching the Lakers? Now? While it would be great TV,
great podcasting, great content, if I'm the Lakers, I don't
want my head coach with his hat backwards talking to
Lebron James, you got a job to do. Entertain people

(03:54):
by putting an entertaining product out on the floor, not
with your podcast. Now. I don't know what's in the
language of the contract, but that's what I would say. No,
we want you to be the head coach of the Lakers.
I don't need you to do a coach. It's like
Doug Gottlieb is coaching Wisconsin Green Bay Stevens Point while
doing his radio show. That's different. He can use that

(04:18):
for publicity for his program. He'll need that publicity for
his program, you know, putting them on the map. He's
already gotten publicity. The Lakers don't need publicity. They don't
need to have him do this so they can have
more people interested in the Lakers. JJ Reddicks should just
coach the Lakers, be the CEO of the Lakers. Now,
you bring in some really good assistant coaches.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
I totally agree with the last part. Hire people who
know what you don't know, and then let them do
their job. The NBA, remember, you have eighty two games,
plus you have preseason games. It'd be hard. I don't
think it's impossible, though. Podcast you can do any time anywhere,
and you're just sitting around talking and the expense of
having you know, filming or audio like these guys are
dealing with monopoly money in comparison to what we're dealing with.

(05:01):
So can you do it? Sure? Does he need to
do it? He doesn't, but it'd be fast. It would
definitely be fascinating in theater. Definitely be a fascinating theater.
This is Rachel Nichols talking about the gamble that the
Lakers are taking.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
This is a very, very difficult thing to be certain on.
It is just such a huge gamble. The metaphor in
my head is, say, you've got a guy who was
a waiter at a restaurant, then he went on to
be a food critic, very respective, very good. He's suddenly
hired to be the head chef even though he's never
worked in a kitchen before.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Is that going to work?

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Maybe it becomes the hottest restaurant in town. Maybe it's
closed in a month. There is literally no way to know.
We can project. We can say, oh, JJ has this
in his favor is this against him? But we won't
know until he actually does it because he's never done
it before. And That's where the Lakers have sort of
made an interesting choice here. They've made this huge gamble

(05:57):
on their seventh head coach in thirteen years, eighth if
you count the data interim head coach for four or
five months. So this is a point whereas you guy
has just showed with all those head coaches that they fired,
can they afford to be taking another gamble that in
a year might completely blow up in their faces.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
They've done it.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
I don't see the gamble in it. I mean, it's
a gamble in anybody you hire. I mean Frank Vogel
had won an NBA championship, he got fired up for
one year because he was he was a really bad
fit for what they had, And they screwed up with
keeping Kevin Young on staff, who's now the head coach
of BYU. They just, you know, it's really hard to

(06:35):
keep somebody who's in line for the job on your
staff when he has no relationship with the head coach.
But you know, like Darvin Ham had played, had been
an assistant an NBA championship team, and no one thought
he was particularly good. So like, where is it out?
Tell me, here's the problem with what Rachel's doing one.
She's acting like it hasn't been done before, and it has. Secondly,

(07:00):
she hasn't offered up anyone she would hire, right, you
couldn't hire Budenholzer was gone. Besides, you're not gonna hire
Budenholzer when it's the same system. And by the way,
a lot of people don't like working for Budenholzer. You know,
he's not a warm and fuzzy guy that people dig
working with. Look at the guys he's had to hire.
Tell me the coach out there that you would rather hire.

(07:21):
Tell me the guy. This is the problem with people
who and and oh yeah, by the way, the other
part to it, And this is what I do appreciate
about Rachel is she's not necessarily an opinion giver. She
gave what was a doubtful opinion without giving an opinion,
kind of brilliant. But she's not stating that it won't work.
She's simply stating it's some form of gamble because he

(07:43):
hasn't coached before. Well, again, tell me who the fuck
you want to have coach. If you don't want JJ
Reddick to be your coach, you just talk in circles
about all this other stuff like name somebody who you
think is better suited. James Brago. What the fuck has
he done as head coach? I like James, He's fine,
He's gonna get a coach, But like, I mean, do

(08:04):
you have any idea that Kenny Atkinson been great with
really shitty teams trying to get them with good culture
and and be average. Hey, but the best chance you
have of being successful is somebody that Lebron James buys into.
And JJ Reddick is somebody Lebron James buies into that
gives you the best chance to succeed. Here's Colin Coward

(08:27):
why the Lakers should trade for Trey Young.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
You get Trey Young, and we're gonna be talking about
Trey Young, not the coach. So I think the Tray
Young him putting out an hour glass is saying, ah,
it's a matter of time. I would be on board
with that now. And he's a pretty shaky defensive player,
but it should be noted so is Luca, and you
all love Luca. There's a lot of guys in this
league who are offensive players who are not great defensive players.

(08:54):
Trey Young has gotten better as a defensive player, but
he is a playmaker. He is a shoot, he's in
his prime. And I'll tell you he was in the
biggest city in the South. He is a big city player.
When he broke into this league, where did he play best?
New York City. Trey Young is not gonna wither under
the lights. He's a big city player. He'd fit in
Los Angeles, he would not shrink. So, if that's the move,

(09:17):
and Trey Young is giving you a cryptic tweet, if
that's the move, I think there's advantages to it. We
pay a lot more attention to him than the rookie
head coach. And good God, the Lakers need guys that
can shoot. They need guys that I mean ruyacha more.
I always, oh, three balls. If that's your guy, you're
not a championship team ad Lebron and Trey Young. That's

(09:40):
getting past the first round?

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Uh maybe maybe? I mean Trey Young doesn't and can't
guard anybody. Lebron can't guardt anybody, and that Lee puts
a lot of pressure on Anthony Davis and every else.
You have to defend the rim And then what do
you have to give up to get Trey Young?

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Right? Like?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Are you better off giving up Austin reeves to get
Trey Young. I don't think you are, and I love
Trey Young. Trey Young has to play with somebody who
has as a big who can defend the rim, and
you also have to realize that he needs a ball
in his hands in order to be effective. I don't
know if I love that fit. That's what the Fox

(10:22):
said say.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Let's find out who what is annoying? Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Hey, Doug, do you know how easy it is to
spend money in Vegas like you? I don't know. I
went a couple of weeks ago and I'm going again
here this weekend. Like you just spend like a hunt
Bucks on a couple of hamburgers, and it's just like
that's just the way it is. Everything in Vegas is
more expensive. And the Raiders released this information yesterday. You

(11:13):
can tailgate at this exclusive setup for yourself, this VIP
setup for twenty thousand dollars. Now you tell me, Doug,
I know you're you're good with money, you don't, you
don't overspend? Is this worth twenty thousand bucks? You show
up at a Raiders game, you get this exclusive spot

(11:34):
in the parking lot for a tailgate and the premium tailgate.
They're calling it climate controlled two story structure. So inside
climate control two story structure, it fits twenty people. All
inclusive packages start at twenty thousand per unit. I'm thinking

(11:55):
that's not even including the food or drinks. I'm thinking
that's just like the space. What do you think, Doug,
twenty thousand bucks for how many?

Speaker 2 (12:05):
How many do you get?

Speaker 6 (12:07):
Oh? No, it includes food, beverages and a fifty five
inch TV. Okay there, that's good. Um, it could fit
twenty people inside air conditioned tailgate before a radio game.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Huh ummm it's only for before Yeah, I think it's
just yeah, yeah, no, get there in the morning.

Speaker 6 (12:31):
It's like, but the annoying part I'm annoyed by, like
why does any financial discretion go to get thrown out
the window in Vegas? Like I would be sick to
my stomach if I got like a bottle of water
and a sandwich and paid thirty dollars. But I did
that every single day we went to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
I can tell you. I can tell you why it is.
We've all convinced ourselves that losing money in Vegas is
just an entertainment expense, Like, ah, you know I did,
did you win? You know I broke even like well,
I thought you'd lost like a thousand bucks, but it's
like it was entertainment expense, right. So I think that's
how we look at everything in Vegas.

Speaker 6 (13:13):
That's a great theory. I think you're right. It's just
money to burn. It doesn't matter where you burn it. Okay,
So Angel Reese Iowa. Sam just reminded me that they
play Caitlin Clark plays Angel Reese again on Sunday. It's
the Prime Game on Sunday on ABC. I want to say, anyways,

(13:33):
a couple of days ago, she was short with reporters,
and then after reporters asked if anything's going on, she says,
I know y'all like to twist my words, so I'm
just going to keep it short and sweet. I can't
trust y'all, so I'm just letting you know short and sweet.

(13:54):
When you're a public figure, there's like there's a contract
that you sign with anybody, everybody else in society if
you choose to be a public figure, and all the
rewards that are reaped from that. In other words, anything
she got paid in college, above and beyond her tuition
was her name, image and likeness. So just for being

(14:16):
Angel Reese, she got paid I don't know, six figures,
I'm guessing. And she's still getting those deals as a pro.
And she signed up to be famous. And when you
go on her social media, she really wants to let
you know that she's living the life of a famous person.
She was backstage at that festival you went to last week.
She was out there for Chef Keef or Chef Keief

(14:39):
or whatever chief keep on Sunday night. And so she's famous,
and she signed up for this, and she very much
wants it, and she wants the rewards from it. Part
of that public contract is that your words are going
to be scrutinized and your actions are going to be scrutinized.
When you stay stupid shit and the media reacts to it.

(15:02):
That that's I guess, that's the payment for being famous.
And she has put her foot in her mouth, whether
she just isn't articulating it, well, enough or not. She
has said some real stupid shit that goes viral, and
that's part of being a public figure.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
There's no question about it. I don't I don't think
she's terribly articulate in terms of understanding the some of
the ways in which she's she's come across. And what
happens is when you're you know, when you're made to
look like you don't know what you're actually saying, or

(15:40):
you're saying things that are incendiary and you don't understand
why they're so incendiary, right, you blame other people. And
that's that's where she is. That's where she is.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
Yeah, it's just to be short and and and think
that you're punishing the media. That's just going to bring
more scrutiny onto you because you can't handle the responsibility
of being a public figure. Jayalen Brown arrived at the
Championship parade today with a T shirt, a big T

(16:15):
shirt with big writing that said state your source. Now.
This is a reference to Stephen A. Smithy. When I
first take I don't know, a couple months ago, maybe
it was a month ago, He's like, I want y'all
to read an NBA what an NBA source just sent me.
He said this on the air. He said, Jayalen Brown,
it's not so much that he's underrated, it's that he's

(16:38):
just not liked because of his I am better than
you attitude. He knows it. It's the same reason he's
not as markable as he should be. That's what an
NBA source just told me. My issue with this. The
annoying part about this is state your source. That's just
not what any member of the media is going to do.

(16:59):
They're not going to give up the source if the
source doesn't want to be named. It's called protecting sources.
It's called uh journal And I hate to say journalism
because I don't know if Steph Nate Smith is a
journalist anymore, but I will. I will defend him on
this one. He doesn't have to give up his source.
It's a it's a a conversation or a private bond

(17:22):
between the source and reporter. And Jalen Brown should probably
move past this one.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, that's one of those I does that make you
more liked?

Speaker 1 (17:35):
You know?

Speaker 2 (17:36):
I just like, what is the what is the win?
Is the win? Yes? First of all, you're right, like
any of these people who go like, oh, unnamed sources bullshit, Like, okay,
so are you familiar with deep throat? That's an unnamed source.

Speaker 6 (17:52):
Right.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
If not for unnamed sources, we wouldn't have many of
these stories being broken. Everyone knows that. But aside from that,
or maybe in addition to that, they Yes, Steven A.
Smith looks looks foolish for what he said. But you know,
it's just like when you win. Anything else is punching.

(18:12):
When you're the MVP of the NBA Finals, will the
the local fans, will they cheer for those things? Sure,
but you're punching down and you're giving him way more,
way more attention than he in fact deserves, even if
it's negative attention, because there will always be that portion
of it. Like, well, maybe that's why people don't like
Jalen Brown because he's you know, he's rubbing into your face.

(18:35):
It doesn't matter. I Like, again, if you're the champion
of the NBA, if you're the MVP of the NBA Finals,
why does what any somebody said on TV matter to
you at all?

Speaker 6 (18:44):
Correct? No, he he was the ultimate the ultimate scoreboard
was how he played in the playoffs. So so Jalen
Brown is uh angel Reese for being short with the media,
and I'm annoyed that it's just way too easy to
spend money in I.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Guess I think I think it said it's way too
I think the fact that we solved that it's way
too easy to spend money in Vegas and why it is,
that's it's incredibly annoying how fast it goes, and then
we make excuses to ourselves on the plane ride home.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
And for that reason, why are we doing this?

Speaker 6 (19:25):
Because we can? I saw this video yesterday. I don't
know when it was done, maybe it was maybe it
was a few months ago or whatever. But because JJ
Reddick was hired as a Laker, Carmelo Anthony did a
podcast and he told this story about I think Kobe
was playing against JJ Reddick and maybe a couple of

(19:46):
college guys and an Olympic practice game. I don't know.

Speaker 7 (19:50):
Here's story Reddick and Cole and Team USA that we
was locked in and we were preparing to go play
against the Genobleis and the Rudy fernandez Is around the world,
you know what I mean, Like just JJ Reddick type
of style player. And I remember Cole couldn't stand JJ
redd Cole took it personal against JJ Reddick in practice
because he got tired of Coach K kept talking about

(20:11):
JJ Reddick. Cole took it very, very personal, to the
point where he was running due screens. In practice, he
was denying JJ the boy. He was filing the shit
out JJ. I'm like, damn, why are you treating a
young boy like that? Fuck that motherfucker. What's the problem
Coach K keep talking about this motherfucking like he he
came up here to do something for this motherfucker.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
I'm gonna show you the day.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
That's amazing sound. That's amazing sound. Now he's the coach
of the Lakers and he was hired by Rob Polinka,
who supposedly was Kobe's best friend. That sound awesome. Why
can play for you? Because we can? All right, that's
it for the end of Bonus podcast. She got the
radio show every day on the Doug Gottlab Show. Oh
by the way, it's three to five Eastern time, and
it follows this on the podcast. This is Fox Sports Radio.
