Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug gottlie Show. Heres in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb. What up.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. You know, there's a
lot of discussion about and we'll get to it with
what the Fox said about tomorrow night with the Hall
of Fame game. But Sam, I'll bring you in on this, like, uh,
this is part of our topic a little bit for
(00:38):
that we use for the midway doing the radio show.
I don't I don't understand these people that watch preseason football,
and there's a lot of them, Like I love football,
I love watching NFL football, I love I have I'm
in several fantasy leagues. You know, I don't I'm not
necessarily allowed to gamble on football, not because I'm a
gambling annict, because I'm a college coach. I don't do
(01:00):
it anyway, because I just I know my personality.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I'll always try and get it back.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
But I do think that there's just this there's this
part of us which I part of people.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
And I'm not.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Being critical as much as well, maybe I am being critical.
This is just a lack of understanding of people, Like
can anybody legitimately explain to me, why you would watch
a preseason football game, especially one in which like Caleb
Williams doesn't play in That doesn't make any sense to me.
Does it make any sense to you, Sam?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Yeah? If you're.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
If, I don't even know why you'd go to the
stadium to watch these games, Like great, I don't even know.
We don't even know if, like some many of these
guys are even going to be on the roster when
the actual season starts. It's like, it's a weird It's
not even like these guys are on the team. They're
called trying out and their performance on the field doesn't
really even matter in terms of decision making in terms
of who makes a roster. I just I have less
(02:01):
of an appetite. I've never really had an appetite for
NFL preseason games, but I just think that they are
completely pointless because it's not even like a team scrimmage.
You're not getting the rust off guys knees and having
like a you know, a hitting scrimmage with the A
a versus A or B versus B would be more
fun to watch. And I know they're still trying to
figure out their rosters, but I don't these guys just
(02:23):
feel like rogue players and they'll be on another team
by the beginning of the season or not.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Most of them will not.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
So who are we watching?
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Like we don't even know, Like a lot of these
guys from like ul Lafayette or like Arkansas State we
just never heard of.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
And yes, yeah, pretty much. Yeah, that's that.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
You're nailing it. I don't like again, It's just it's
one of those things where I understand the argument of hey,
there's nothing going on, but there's plenty going on. It's
a summer whether it's probably better now than it's ever
going to be wherever you are, lakes, beaches, rivers, you know,
family vacations. I actually understand it more guys that go
(03:05):
to bad football teams games late in the season, like, look,
that's your team, you had it planned. There's nothing else
going on. It's cold, it's good excuse to go drink
a bunch of beer and yell at your favorite you know,
your favorite player. Like that one I understand more than
going and watching and paying money to see a team
(03:26):
play made up of guys that you'll never see play again.
You have no affinity towards and they don't affect your
life and it's not good football.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Can you understand? Jays two? Is this? Am I the
only one?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
And I'm again this is I'm never being critical of
the NFL because they have created this unbelievable business.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
I just don't I and I I.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Know that the the preseason games played inside stadiums of
those teams, the reason that fans go or show up
at all is because they have to purchase those tickets.
To purchase the season tickets, I would tell you right
now I love the NFL. I buy tickets every year
to watch team play. This year will be Packers and Chargers,
but I don't I would never do season tickets just because,
(04:10):
like every game you attend on a Sunday, you're missing
basically all the rest of the games on a Sunday.
I only go to Thursday night games, Sunday night games,
or Monday night games.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Generally.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
This year will be changed because I go to a
Packers game, but because I can't do my job. Plus
I like watching the league, I watch it at home.
I do the Sunday ticket that That's what I do.
So I don't understand season tickets to begin with, but
I do understand the people who want season tickets, they
buy the preseason games. This is not a pre like
this game specifically, no one of substance is playing. Maybe
(04:42):
it's part of your package when you buy to go
see the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
But I just don't get it.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
I don't get why people knowingly go to a preseason
game unless they have the tickets that they had to
buy because they had to get season tickets.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
Well, if okay, it's like you're buying You're buying a
package of underw and it comes with like two pairs
of crappy socks, and you're like, I don't even need these,
So it's like, why even go Because if you have
to buy the preseason tickets to get a season ticket package,
it's they're just making you buy those tickets, and it's
(05:15):
it's crap. The product is crap. We don't even know
where these guys will end up in two months. They
could be playing in some European League of Football ELF.
I follow them on Twitter and I've never heard of
these guys before, and I follow college football pretty closely,
so I don't know. It's just yeah, it really is.
It's just you can zone out these games don't matter.
(05:36):
The results really don't matter. It's not good football. It's
like seventeen fifteen, twenty to sixteen. I mean it's in
and if they're not playing any of the starters, where
is the substance?
Speaker 6 (05:47):
So it's like, that's my point. Aren't recognized?
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Its like plays like they're daring you to not show
up by not playing, and I get why you.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Already got money from you. They're just trying to sell
more pretzels and hats and beer.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
It's weird, but it's just the weirdest thing, right, Like
fewer and fewer players of substance play in the preseason
and yet and I know we have fewer preseason games,
but the price of everything goes up, and you're just
sitting there going like why do these people care?
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Well, at some point there will be some rookies, maybe
you know, third fourth, fifth rounders drafted that will probably
take some snaps in these games. It's not like every
team is sitting every rookie that they've drafted. But yeah,
you're not seeing like these marquee names like Caleb Williams,
and what's the point of going to this game? It's
like going to an NHL game and then these like,
(06:39):
you know, junior amateurs come out and you're like, who
are these nineteen and twenty year old kids?
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Like, who are these people?
Speaker 5 (06:44):
I don't I didn't pay for this, I't I don't
want to watch this exactly.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Let's get to what the Fox said, and now.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Say, here's what every day at this time that I
got lab show on Fox Sports Radio iHeartRadio app. We
played for you a portion of a previous show on
FSRFS one. Here's Colin Calherd, host of The Herd. He
said this about Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 7 (07:17):
You may think much differently legacy wise of Matt Stafford
and Aaron Rodgers by the end of this season in February,
and we view Rogers up here in Stafford down there.
But now the roles have been switched and Stafford has
the great coach, the capable GM, the excellent owner who's
(07:41):
not impulsive, the very good weapons, and in three seasons
Matt Stafford has already won a Super Bowl and has
a better winning percentage four and one in the playoffs
than Aaron ever did. And it's Aaron now with the
impulsive week owner, proven coach, the rickety rebuilt again offensive line.
(08:05):
Let me ask you, in six months from today, if
Stafford's in another NFC championship and Aaron fizzles out again,
we sure Aaron's much better.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yes, yes, I mean, listen, I understand that much of
collins dislike for Matt Stafford, I mean, for seeing much
of his dislike for Aaron Rodgers has been fed by
many of his recent actions like all that's good, but yeah, yeah,
(08:40):
we're very sure his teams in Green Bay consistently won
in the same division as Matt Stafford. It's not like
they played in different eras. And I agree Stafford great
arm and Stafford was not surrounded by great teams. But
Stafford also you know, like, look, dude, he would throw
(09:05):
untimely picks. He didn't move like Rogers. No one thinks
he's at that level. This is one of those arguments
which right now, because Stafford did win a Super Bowl,
like it's Colin does this since very clever you claim,
you know, a win here and a win there as
the overall like he's had bad years. He's been injured
(09:26):
just like Aaron Rodgers had. He's thought about retiring, just
like Aaron Rodgers did. He's gotten paid just like Aaron
Rodgers did. He's had many of the same but hasn't
been publicized as much. Why Well, because he's not willing
to take on the criticism that Aaron is His wife does.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
His wife has made.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
His wife has made critical comments and said dumb things
just like Aaron has done the exact same thing.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
But he's not not as few as good.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
So yeah, I do think there's just as big a
gap as we should believe, not what Colin's trying to
make you believe. Here's Dan Patrick and Tom Berducci talking
about Mike Trout.
Speaker 8 (10:04):
We can't help but think about Mike Trout that he's
I guess had a setback and you know his rehab,
what is he thirty two?
Speaker 3 (10:13):
I mean, not much hope.
Speaker 9 (10:17):
And you know a lot of times the game turns
over quickly these days, and yet you look at the
Angels and they're a long way off Dn. I mean,
they didn't have much to do here at the deadline.
They probably could have done more, but farm system is
not great. I love Mike Trout and I love the
fact that he is so loyal, and a lot of
people use that against him. They say, well, why shouldn't
(10:39):
he just you know, tell Erdie Morain or the Angels
he wants out of there so he's a chance to win.
This is this guy sitting around there for twenty one
twenty two picks on the draft day and the Angels
took him. They extended his contract twice before he was
a free agent. It's really out of nothing more than loyalty, loyalty,
family to the Angels. I don't hold that against them,
but man, I it is a shame that really the
(11:01):
best player of this generation, we've kind of forgotten that
he is, right, Yeah, has never really had the chance
that one chance early in Kansas City they got slepty
I swept. He's never won a postseason game, Mike Trout.
Speaker 10 (11:12):
It's crazy.
Speaker 8 (11:13):
And I don't know if the Angels just say, let's
do what's best for the Angels and trade him. You're
talking about loyalty from the like Kevin Garnett, he was
loyal to the Timberwolves, loyal, loyal, loyal, and then what
happened they trade him to Boston. Now it worked out well,
but at some point the Angels have to look at
this and say what is best for us and what
(11:36):
can we get from Mike Trout.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Yeah, I also think we're missing a little bit here
where the truth is that Mike Trout is untradable due
to his back he's got He's got a back issue
which makes him virtually what.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
I've been told is untradeable.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
So with that contract, so there's a little bit more
to it than just kind of loyalty.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
But it sucks.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
He's the best I've had baseball. He'll tell me he's
the best position player they've ever seen. And another injury,
another setback, another lost season and not traded, and you know,
forever stuck in the abyss of being an Angel. This
is Jonas Knocks and LaVar Arrington talking about Kaylea Williams
not playing in tomorrow Night's Hall of Fame game?
Speaker 6 (12:22):
Why not playing?
Speaker 11 (12:23):
And I get it, start like, a starting quarterback hasn't
played in the Hall of Fame game since twenty fifteen.
But what's the difference in the risk of playing in
this preseason game as opposed to the next one. That's
so far, it's confusing to me.
Speaker 12 (12:36):
I think there's the sensible side of approaching these things,
and then there's the entertainment side of approaching these things. Right,
So from the entertainment standpoint, that makes absolutely no sense
because this is the first game and it's the only
(12:59):
game that's airing, So to put him in for a
series does not hurt anything at all, not on the
sensible side of it. To put them in for one
series doesn't make or break what they have going on.
(13:20):
So from the coach's standpoint, if he doesn't want to
risk any of his starters, you know, sustaining any type
of injury, because he said all starters.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
He didn't say just Caleb Williams.
Speaker 12 (13:34):
He said all starters, which means that he just does
not want to risk any unnecessary injuries.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah, I mean I don't you know, four plays, eight plays,
whatever it is in a first drive, Like, I don't know,
especially considering all these guys are going to play in
these scrimmages that teams have coming up. But if we're honest,
it is really lots of guys don't play in the
Hall of Fame game. And again, I just I don't
(14:06):
understand the value in it, but people are gonna watch
it because they want to watch football on TV with
the decals of NFL teams. That's the reality to it.
That's what the Fox said.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
I say, be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Let's find out who are what is annoying? Jason Stewart.
Speaker 6 (14:34):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
I'm not familiar enough with women's basketball here, but I'm
gonna I'm just guessing her. Cheryl Swoops is one of
the best to ever do it. I think, Yeah, I
know her name, so that says a lot. But she's
become the sad old hag that trolls Caitlin Clark. That's
her new job. I think she has a broadcasting job,
(15:02):
but every single time or turn she has, she takes
a shot at Caitlin Clark. That's her brand, and it's
sad and pathetic and annoying. This is Cheryl Swoops on
her own podcast talking about Rookie of the Year this
year in the WNBA.
Speaker 10 (15:19):
I don't know if Chicago's in the playoffs, right now
without Angel and is Indiana in the playoffs right now
without Caitlin? I don't know, no, Well, but they were close,
right but when you look at the overall team, like
the pieces that they have, without question, Indiana has better
players than Chicago from top to bottom.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
So as Iowa Sam was just screaming, they won thirteen
games all of last season. They've won eleven games this
year the Fever, I think they're in playoff spot right now.
So for her to question whether or not the Fever
would be in the playoffs without Caitlyn Clark, this sounds
like a troll job. It just sounds like she's intentionally
(16:05):
trying to get clicks or something.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Yes, and it worked, she got our attention. Otherwise, did
you know that she had a podcast for this? I
did not, and that'll be the last we ever mentioned
of it. Completely agree, she's annoying, by the way.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
It does.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Is a cottage industry in making up shit to be
to be mad about.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
With Kaitlyn Clark, she's one of the captains.
Speaker 5 (16:25):
Yes, Indiana Fever in the seventh seed currently eleven to
fifteen Chicago's Sky ten and fourteen in the eighth spot.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
For the most lit'sten again. I'm not going to sit
here and tell you I'll watch it every every game.
And I can't quote a quote, chapter and verse of
Angel Reese. And I do think that her energy and
her rebounding is important, but dude, throwing it off the
backboard to your south three or four times a game
is not a Rookie of the Year. Make the young woman.
(16:54):
Kayvin Clark has gotten better. As she's gotten better, the
team's gotten better. She's cut down her turnover, she's improved
her efficiency. They and by the way, they beat in
Chicago all but one time as well, despite the fact
that I don't think anybody would think they were. They
outmanned Chicago a person. Whatever, if you want to do
the whatever, Yeah, this is It's strictly a troll job,
(17:17):
that's all it is. And it's it's embarrassing for the
entire league. What no one's just going like, you know,
she's actually playing really well and they're playing really well.
I mean, the only one who's done it is Don Staley,
who's not in the league anymore.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
What else is annoying you?
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Now, remember, as I've pointed out in this segment last week,
you have to watch for it. I said, let's shelve
this for later, but let's watch for it. There seems
to be this building narrative of Angel Reyes and Caitlin
Kark being the reason for all the.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Good because people don't want to be called racist. That's it.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Russell Wilson's annoying for a lot of reasons. And I'll
explain it after he was caught on the field yesterday.
So there's some woman felt the need to scream out
loud many times during the SoundBite, which is annoying. But
you'll get the gesture.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Yeah, I think you know more than anything else.
Speaker 13 (18:12):
We've known each other person years now, and I've always
tried to be a mentor in some way to him,
you know. You know, we've always texted called whatever it
may be in the.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
Past, and the same thing now.
Speaker 13 (18:20):
You know, I'm just you know, I believe that when
you give as much knowledge that I have or experience
or going through, you know, it comes back in return
for you in the long run.
Speaker 11 (18:28):
You know.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
You just we're a team.
Speaker 13 (18:29):
We're always trying to.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
Work to get better together.
Speaker 13 (18:32):
And you know everything that that every report he's taken,
I'm learning every vice course, every report I'm taking he's learning,
and all the other quarterbacks as well. And when we
even were not in there, we're just processing from the
drill work.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
We're always talking, talking and communicating.
Speaker 13 (18:44):
So I think that's a critical thing to being successful
as a team.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
So Russell Wilson is full of shit.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
Yeah, I just well, just processing and learning. And we've
we've been friends for a long time. And I'm sure
if you asked you, he's probably talking about Justin Fields.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Right, No, he's definitely talking about Justin Fields.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, exactly, Like this is a collaborative effort that like, hey,
whoever plays plays how it works works.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
I have all this knowledge.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
I'm just trying to mentor people like, shut the actual
fuck up.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
I bet if you ask Justin Fields about this relationship,
it would be like, yeah, I mean, he give me
his phone number once, and he's ghosted me a couple
of times on text, and every once in a while
in a room full of people. He's very performative in
how he mentors me. And I think this is all
phony and Russell Wilson's saying all the right things. It's
(19:36):
like one of those things where and we all have
these people in our lives, where my perception of our
relationship is probably strictly work related, and your perception of
our relationship is that we're friends. But the problem is
that you're not treating me like a friend ever or
a mentor in this case for Russell Wilson the MLB
(19:58):
trade deadline. Encourage all of our listeners to read Tom
Verducci's piece today about the trade deadline. And Verducci's been
in the game forever, and I love his stuff and
I like his content, and he nails it here. There
was a ton of movement at the trade deadline for
baseball this year. The problem is, I think eighty percent
(20:19):
of the players moved were relief pitchers that nobody's heard of.
Then the players that were moved, like Josh Bell, were
just guys. MLB, intentionally or not, never takes advantage of
the times on the calendar when they could make news,
when they could be interesting. Their hot stove has completely
(20:43):
disappeared in recent years. So again, I don't know if
it's anyone to blame, and Verducci doesn't blame anybody. It's
just another opportunity yesterday where baseball probably could have been
front and center and making a lot of noise and
news and a bunch sure relievers that nobody's heard of
were removed.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
So again, do you do you have a fix?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
No, that's what I'm saying there. I'm not blaming anybody. Yeah,
it's just you know, I always shoot themselves on the
foot when they get a chance to capture some eyes
or hearts.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
I agree with you on that one.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
I do because that was my thing was I was
following and I was tracking it, and I was just
like I was texting all my baseball friends, is what
does this mean?
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Because I don't know any of these guys. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
These guys trade some big names, shovel some stuff up.
It does, though, feel like Yankees Dodgers crash on a
crash course.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Correct. Oh, I don't know about the Yankees. They're very flawed.
Jazz Chisholm has been a nice little jump start here.
I don't know if that's gonna last. But John Flaherty,
the guy that everyone's saying that the Dodgers got and
they're calling him a front line pitcher. I mean, since
like twenty twenty two, the guy has been very hit
(21:59):
able or injured. He walks a lot of players. I
don't even know if that's a great picture. But anyways,
the trade deadline being a want want.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Cheryl swoops, Yeah, Cheryl swoops. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Actually can I I can switch.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
It's my show. I can switch. Russell Wilson.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Russell Wilson's amazing ability to be so incredibly confident in
how disingenuous he is is remarkable.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
And why are we doing this? Because we can?
Speaker 4 (22:40):
I have no idea what this is. I only I
don't know. I just know that it involves monkey, a monkey,
and a bunch of f words. And it's an exchange
between former NBA champion Mike Miller and Pat Beverly on
his podcast.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
You guys were talking about a monkey earlier, butched on
it just kind of like, so.
Speaker 14 (23:01):
Mike, Mike Millic you know me like, I'm I'm open rookie, right,
you know I'm the rookie that motherfucker come tell you
thing too.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
They know I ain't gonna go back and tell me.
Nobody know.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
I was just like, oh, ship, tell me, tell me more.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
He tell me.
Speaker 14 (23:13):
One day he go up man place where I live.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
Man, But the fucking.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Monkey got out.
Speaker 14 (23:18):
Man, He got on top of my dog.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
He opened my front door.
Speaker 14 (23:21):
They called me about my fucking monkey riding my dog
in the neighborhood.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
Like horse right, I'm rookie, I'm like, the fuck is.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Going on right here?
Speaker 13 (23:31):
Man?
Speaker 14 (23:31):
I got lebronzs over, I got the way I got
you Donas house and taking a look in my country,
coming in and practice on the boat.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Amazing. That's amazing. My monkey that is that is absolutely amazing.
Why CANOP play that sound for you? Because we can't.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
Who doesn't want to? Who doesn't want their own personal monkey? Right?
Speaker 3 (23:51):
I mean, I just I tell you.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
I think friends obviously made everyone I want a monkey.
But yeah, that was a fun story.
Speaker 12 (23:59):
All right.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
That's it for the end of the Bonus Podcast.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Check out the radio show every day daily three to
five Eastern twelve two Pacific, Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
I'm Doug Gottlieb.
