Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb, What.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Up, Doug Gottlieb Show and the Bonus Fox Sports Radio,
I Heart Radio app. Welcome in. I hope you're having
a great day. So Indiana football is very much a
big topic conversation. And what happens is we do this
(00:32):
all the time in basketball, more often in basketball than
in football, where we associate a team in a conference
and we're like, oh, well, that conference is awesome, So
if they're undefeated in that conference, they have to be awesome.
And I completely understand that thinking because that's when people
(00:53):
who aren't paying attention get exposed. Indiana plays Ohio State
this weekend, the rank fifth in the country. Here are
their wins. Florida International, Western Illinois. Hey, charlottey, Charlotte's already
fired their coach. I don't know about Western Illinois. Actually
we were there last week. That's a FCS program FIU
(01:13):
not at their level, so I wouldn't be I'm not
being critical of Indiana no matter how good they thought
they could be, the fact is they knew the Big
Ten schedule was coming and they had to make the
assumption those teams can all beat us. So let's play
some wins and let's get some confidence. They went at UCLA,
it's great, UCLA's not very good. They beat Maryland not
(01:36):
very good, to be Northwestern bottom of the league, Nebraska
at home, not very good, Washington not very good, Michigan
State not very good, Michigan not very good. Now they
play Ohio State and then Purdue. And the crazy part
about it is Oregan's already reached the college football playof
the youse see to be the Big Ten championship game.
(01:56):
It literally is a have to beat Ohio State or
you're not gonna make the College Fall Playoff. And people
will argue that they're not fear Well, let me just
speak for everybody saying life's not fairy, life's not fair.
This is the same thing that happened essentially to Florida
(02:17):
State last year. You're like, well, Florida State, what are
you talking about? Remember Florida State was undefeated, didn't get
into College Fall Playoff. This is just that on steroids, right, Like, literally,
if they lose the game to Ohio State, they will
have beaten exactly nobody in terms of quality teams. And
expect to be in the College Fall Playoff. Why the
(02:39):
SEC teams are better because week after week after week
they have to They didn't play this in the things
teams they didn't play. Okay, they haven't played Oregon, Ohio
State yet, Penn State, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. Do you
know what those teams are? Those are the only teams
above five hundred and the Big Ten the only teams
about five hundred. They played. Perdue hasn't won a game,
(03:01):
Maryland's won one Big Ten game, Northwestern two, Michigan State two,
Nebraska two, UCLA three, and Michigan three, and Washington's four
and four. Washington right now is the best Big Ten
team they played. So do I think that the Big Ten,
even those bottom teams are better than the middle teams
(03:21):
in leagues like maybe even the Big twelve. Sure, but
you're really going to compare it to let's say, for example, LSU,
who lost another game, right, LSU, and you're like, LSU,
they're not even in the conversation. Okay, So I want
you to listen to who LSU has played, and then
(03:41):
you tell me LSU is three and three, six and
four in the season they've beaten Old miss in overtime.
They've beaten Arkansas on the road, they lost to they
lost to A and M and Alabama and then the
one bad losses obviously to Florida and they's USC. But
that's a team that's not getting it in from the SEC. Alabama,
(04:01):
on the other hand, who has two losses, has beaten
Wisconsin on the road, beat Georgia, lost of Vandy, lost
to Tennessee, both on the road, beat Missouri, LSU, They'll
beat Oklahoma, they beat South Carolina, They're gonna beat Auburn. Like,
it's not really close the level of a constant competition.
The SEC is just better. The players are better. So
(04:23):
does it take away from the story, No, it doesn't.
What Indiana's done at their level is fantastic. But this
is not about at your level. This is not about
atta boys. This is about trying to find the twelve
best teams in the country. And remember you have to
include an FCS team, I mean, not an FCS, a
non Power four team, and they're just not there. Now
(04:43):
would they beat Colorado or Kansas State or BYU if
they win the Big Twelve, Yeah, I think they'd have
a chance. Okay, but that's not who they're measuring up against.
They're measuring up against the other at largees who are
just better. And I don't think it's particularly Oregon and
Ohio State, meaning as long as Ohio State wins this
(05:04):
weekend and then potentially Penn State, those are the top
three teams of the Big Ten, right, So I understand
it doesn't seem fair. I do understand doesn't seem equitable,
But the truth is that it is. It's actually way
more fair than you think. It's not overvaluing name of
conference and name of school and said, it's digging into
how good those schools actually are. And I don't care
(05:27):
they didn't play anybody in the non conference because there's
no way Indiana thought they would be this good or
the league would be this bad. But it is.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Let's get to what the Fox says and now say
every day this time of the Doug Gotlib Show. In
the Bonus podcast, who played for your poortshit of previous show?
Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports One, We talked about this
a little bit yesterday. Here's Colin Cowhert talking about the
Cowboys drafting shoot to Or Sanders and hiring Gooch prime.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
I am convinced if Dallas gets the number one pick,
and I think they have a chance to, I think
they're going to draft Shadueur Sanders and hire Dion Sanders's coach.
The funniest response to this is, well, well, Dak has
a no trade clause. Yeah, so did Russell Wilson. You
don't think Dak would waive that in two seconds if
they drafted Shaduur Sanders. By the way, Aaron Rodgers March
(06:25):
twenty twenty two, Packers signed him to the biggest annual
payment deal in the league at quarterback. By April of
twenty twenty three, he was a Jet. Jimmy Garoppolo in
twenty nineteen remember him. For about a minute. He was
the highest paid quarterback. Two years later they drafted Trey Lance. Again,
Russell Wilson had a no trade clause. Nobody cares be
(06:49):
good now. Jared Goff got a new deal a couple
years later, sent him to Detroit, went and got Matt Stafford.
Everything's negotiable. Everything in life is negotiable, but especially at quarterback.
I mean Dak Prescott. They've been stringing him along for
years before his last contract. Dak Prescott is a grown up.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, I don't. I don't see it, but I listen.
I could be wrong. I just don't see it. Like
you're just gonna give away Dak Prescott, who you just
gave a Like do you know how big a caphit
it is? He doesn't have that value in the open market.
That's why I wouldn't have signed him to that deal.
Would somebody trade for him? Like maybe, but the Cowboys
(07:32):
would also have to give up more picks. I actually
don't think you give up a ton to get Dak
Prescott because of that contract you're taking on that contract.
I just I don't. I don't see it. I could
be wrong, but I don't get where number one overall
pick like huh wh Yeah, No, he could be a
(08:03):
top ten pick, so it means he could still be available.
I just don't. I don't see it. And then you
run into the daddy ball factor. It's never happened before
in the NFL, and he's got to be so good
beyond reproach. Do I think Dion could coach in the NFL,
(08:26):
of course, I don't know if he wants to. If
he does, he has to make it less about Dion
and more about everybody else. Do I think Sure can
be a quarterback in the NFL. Yeah, but with all
the growing pains, in the fact the Cowboys aren't very
good and your dad's the coach. I just I don't
know how that works. And it does feel like Dion's
(08:49):
doing the hold him hostage again, just like he did
with Florida State. And while right now he looks like
the genius because of Florida State, the reality is Florida
State was undefeated last year. So I don't I don't
see it. I don't see it as being smart. I
don't see it. It's a start over and everything depends
on she door, and you know, they got you completely
(09:13):
over a barrel. I think it's ludicrous in terms of
running an actual program, but I don't know. It's also Dallas,
so who knows? Who knows? This is Rob Parker talking
about Joel Embiid.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Enough already with Joe l Embiid and Philadelphia, and it
might just be time. You haven't gotten to the conference
finals with him right, It's not like you he's taking
you to the NBA Finals three years in a row,
and you're ready to finally break through and win the championship.
None of that has happened. He's a fine, tremendous player,
he is, but I think he's worn out as welcome
(09:54):
in Philadelphia. For the players to bring up stuff like
that tells you that it irked them and it bothered them,
especially when this guy hasn't always produced in the postseason. Yeah,
I would explore it. It doesn't mean that he's a
bomb oy camp play. He's one out of alcome. I
would give him a fat cheese steak with extra cheese
(10:14):
and say, don't let the door hit you on the
way out.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Yeah, I wouldn't. I mean, look, I think it's a
come to Jesus, and we'll see if he comes to Jesus.
He's thirty years old, he's in the prime of his career. Yes,
he's been banged up by injuries. I'm sure he's gotten
a bit lazy. But they have been to the conference finals,
and I understand everybody. It's been everybody else's fault except
(10:42):
Joel Embid. But I just how many guys can he
move on. You still at the end of the day,
have Tyree, MAXI, Paul, George Joel Embiid. You're gonna live
this thing out and see how he reacts because you
do have him under contract for uh, you know, all
the way through twenty seven, twenty eight. I just we
(11:02):
act like this is so easy to just move off
guys that are MVP level players. That's not happening. Here's
Dan Patrick and National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skins.
They had this exchange.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
He is the National League Rookie of the Year. He's
Paul Skins, the Pirates pitcher back on the program. Last
time I saw you when you got the honor, you
had a fireplace scene behind you look really nice and cozy.
Did you make the fire.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
I did not, And I think it looked all right,
but not quite as good as the fireplace scene you've
got behind you.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
So similar, but I'm not winning any awards. How did
you celebrate when you got the honor?
Speaker 6 (11:45):
Yeah, I mean we had a number of my teammates
and coaches and you know, some people that have just
kind of affected my career in the past couple of years.
So they were all there. Got to celebrate with them,
and you know, just it was nice to be able
to to experience with them because it takes a village
(12:06):
to have any sort of success.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Does he have no affect in his voice at all?
But Skeins is a stud I mean, dude, to come
right in and just mow guys down in the in
the NL, this pretty amazing stuff. And Dan Patrick's new
setup in was that Maine or Vermont whatever, also amazing stuff.
That's what the Fox said.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Say.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Jase.
Speaker 7 (12:53):
Do what you got, Bud Hey, Doug yesterday on the
radio show. It just kind of came up organically. So
I look for something that Adam Silver has said recently
about the ratings, and indeed, the ratings have been down
first couple of weeks of the season, or has it
been in the first month of the season, whatever it's been,
ratings have been down. That's confirmed. And this is his
(13:15):
explanation for that I.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
Think it's you know, we're just looking at a couple
of weeks of ratings. You know, there's always some unique things.
This year, we're up against the World Series, you had
a presidential election which was commanding enormous amount of attention.
So I don't think it has anything whatsoever do with
this style of play on the floor.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
So it's interesting he brings up the election. It probably
is one of the leading reasons why the ratings are down.
But the election also proved to us that I think
everyone's kind of sick and tired of happy talk and lies,
lying about your weaknesses because in the end, I mean,
the market kind of rules the day, right, the public's
going to judge you based on ratings. Shaquille O'Neil says
(14:00):
he thinks it's about the style of play. Everyone's running
the same play, as he says, the Warriors messed it
all up. I don't mind Golden State back in the
day shooting threes, but every team isn't a three point
shooting team, So why does everybody have the same strategy.
I think the game is boring. The more you make
up excuses for things, the more happy talk. You know,
(14:22):
something happened at work just recently, and instead of somebody
giving me like the straight talk so I could be
prepared for what might come next, I just got a
bunch of happy talk. And the order I get, the
less tolerance I have for that. Instead of looking at
the root problems of your sport and just coming up
with kind of excuses, maybe Adam Silver needs to dive
(14:45):
a little deeper here.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
M Yeah, I would say. I'd say there's a bunch
of things. I think people come up with excuses when
they can. In asking Shaq about style of play, it
can be painful because I don't think he knows what
(15:08):
he's looking at. To be totally honest with you, I
just don't All teams don't play the same They don't
all run the same plays. And by the way, they
used to run the same plays except for the Lakers
or the Bulls who ran the triangle and other teams
ran some of the very very similar actions. That's actually
really normal in sports is that people. How many teams
(15:29):
in the NFL run Kyle Shanahan's offense. That doesn't stop
those from those ratings, You know, does he really think
that we want to see them go back to throwing
the ball inside to playing big guys like nobody likes that.
I just think the market's been saturated by the NBA.
And on the rare chance that you do sit down
to watch a game, for years now, you've had You've
(15:51):
had guys not show up to work for a myriad
of reasons, which plays into the ah, they're not playing hard,
they don't care, which turns off a bunch of people.
And then the last part is your most popular players
still remain on the West Coast, and that's going to
kill your numbers. There's a direct correlation between the NBA
(16:12):
ratings declining and Lebron being with the Lakers, and the
Lakers partially weren't very good, and then they're on the
West Coast, and then Steph's been in at Golden State,
Steph was with the Knicks, it'd be a different story.
I understand that we're comparing it to the NFL, but again,
the NFL is on, you know, three days a week,
(16:34):
three days a week. The NBA is seemingly every day.
It's really almost like six days a week. So yeah,
that's what it is. I don't know, there's not one reason.
There's a myriad of them, and I don't think anybody's
being dishonest. I do think the election gave people TV fatigue,
(16:54):
especially during the week, like, ah, I gotta go from
this to that the other thing. But I think the
biggest thing is the overall sature of basketball on television.
Every college games on TV, every NBA games on TV.
There's not a lot that special about it. And then
you have how many guys are not playing on a
daily basis, which leads people to go like, well, they
(17:14):
don't care, I don't care what else.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
Michael Parsons he does a podcast and every once in
a while he puts his foot in his mouth that
this is I think this is more happy talk.
Speaker 9 (17:25):
I'm gonna put this out. There were a damn good
football team. I know the scores ain't showing it, and
I know obviously people feel like we got so many
missing pieces, but I just truly believe, like you almost
got to go to things that like the things that
we messing up on, Like I think our defense has
really turned things around, Like up into that last quarter
(17:47):
when they got that touchdown. Defense, we only really gave
those two touchdowns and that first quarter, but other than that,
we gave up six points in the other two quarters.
Speaker 7 (17:58):
Yeah, so he's with somebody in this. In the video
portion of the podcast, he's with somebody. But I think
it's just some kind of wacky because anybody with any
grain of salt would have said, you're a damn good
football team. Expound on that. What do you mean?
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Yeah? That was weird and we only give those two touchdowns?
Those are like huge things. You're not a good football team.
Can you be getting better? Sure? Sure? And it's like, again,
this is the problem with having a podcast is either
you're utterly and completely honest or you're disingenuous, and now
(18:38):
we don't want to pay attention to you, which is
where we are now. Anything else.
Speaker 7 (18:42):
If I'm not mistaken, who watched the game on Monday night?
I thought, didn't the Texan score on the very first
play and it was called back with a like an
illegal motion or something.
Speaker 10 (18:51):
Yeah, Nico Collins.
Speaker 7 (18:55):
I guess he just forgot about that. Joey Galloway, You're
going to know a lot more about this on me.
I'm a casual college football fan. This just sounds completely warped.
Joey Galloway about the Indiana Hoosiers.
Speaker 11 (19:09):
Honestly, if I'm Indiana, I don't know if I'm playing
Roark or Gents Ohio State. We've seen what happened to
Florida State last year, Jordan Travis, What did cheap Indiana
out of this? Getting her quarterback hurt? We've seen it
happen in Florida State last year?
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Yeah? I what can you keep them out of it?
What keeps out of it is they haven't played anybody,
and the one team they play, unfortunately, is Ohio State
and the road, and you have to win that team
and you'll be in. Win that game, and you'll be
in or lose that game and you won't. That's it, Strake.
The schedule is not good enough. You played the entire
bottom of the Big Ten. So it's annoying, how disingenuous.
(19:43):
Even Joey Galloway is what can hurt you not having
your quarterback? No, I don't care about your quarterback. I
care about the fact you haven't met anybody. Yes, their
Sammy Well.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
Galloway seems to think that Indiana's in whether they win
or lose, and if they get their quarterback hurt and
lose the game, that somehow keeps them out.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
I guess tis the season to do what basketball analysts
have done for a long time, which is shill for
your conference, and Joey Galloway is shilling for his conference.
Ohio's State guy becomes Big ten guy becomes Rob rob
get as many Big ten teams in the fuck out
of here, dude, Like Indiana is not at the level
of the big boys. They're just not And there's no
(20:26):
way to judge them other than how they look against
Ohio State in the road. So they're not in. I
wouldn't vote him in, but we'll say so.
Speaker 7 (20:38):
Adam Silver with happy talk, Micah Parsons happy talk.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
I think the Joey Galloway shilling for his conference is.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Annoy Why are we doing this because we can.
Speaker 7 (20:59):
Lebron James, I think this is uh was his name,
Dave mcmanimon or something covers the NBA for ESPN. He
got this bit of sound on his phone last night.
I guess Lebron James was asked about the Rookie Connect.
Speaker 12 (21:14):
They didn't find DK. The other sixteen teams fucked it up.
Anybody watch them, They just didn't fuck it up.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
A couple things about this, the Sicka phantish over.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Laughter, just like we drew it up like we drew
it up.
Speaker 7 (21:34):
I think that was my friend Dan Wookie as that
the maybe most offensively fake laft in the room, Like
we have to listen to that back again. But also
it's really funny how Lebron James is making fun of
other teams for not drafting someone when your team drafted
Bronni James.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, I mean, look, I liked to Dalton connect pick
any Obviously he's been better than anyone could have imagined.
And the Lakers right now, are you know, are ten
and four? A guy a rookie drops thirty seven? I
think the question for the Lakers is, you know, will
they be able to guard anybody? And maybe it doesn't
matter because you have connecting Reeves and James and Davis,
(22:18):
Like you got four dudes that can score and they're
just trying to find a fifth guy that can stay
out of the way. And right now it's Cam Reddish
as a starter and you know, maybe they figure figure
it out. But yeah, I mean it's like it's really
hard to be excessive in your praise of the Lakers
when the second round pick is a complete waste of time.
(22:41):
Waste of time, Why can we play it for you
because we can. All Right, that's it for the end
the Bonus podcast. You got the ready to show every
day three to three to five Eastern twelve two Pacific.
I'm no Gottlieb
