All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Doug Gottlieb Show, and the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app.
Welcome in. So I'm a college basketball coach. Some of
these things I'm learning as I go. Some things I've
known for a long time. One thing I've known for
a long time is there are certain jobs which are
deemed to be better jobs than others, even if they

(00:33):
look similar. And Texas and Georgia, you'd be hard pressed
to find anybody who doesn't believe those are the two
best jobs in America. They played tonight for the right
to play for a national championship. And I think it's
be cool it's in the Cotton Bowl, Cotton Bowl, but
it's actually here's the weird thing. The Cotton Bowl's not played.
Oh I'm sorry, my bad. Three to two. One of

(00:56):
the of the five best jobs in America, Well's State, Georgia,
Texas and probably USC Notre Dame. Those are on anybody's list.
Those are on anybody's list. And to have Ohio State
take on Texas for the right to play in a
national championship and it's being played in Texas. Now, granted

(01:18):
it's the it's the Cotton Bowl, but it's not being
played in the Cotton Bowl. And actually it's kind of
a good thing, right because they got some snow in Dallas.
And as much as I love snow games, the snow
globe games, yeah, Dallas is not really built for snow
or ice, and playing in Jerry's world is just fine
by me. But man, you, I know this is a

(01:39):
cliche that that JSE two doesn't like, but you could
not have You could not have written a better script
for the first college football playoff than Penn State, Notre Dame. Right,
classic Midwest, historic semi rivalry, but historic programs facing off
against each other. And then Ohio State Texas. Wow? Is
that amazing? Yeah, there are little things with it, right,

(02:02):
Sarks never truly won a big game, Ryan Days never
truly won a big game. Somebody's got to win a
big game. You do have arch Banding just sitting there
chomping at chomping at the bit, and quittin yours who
who was at Ohio State for a year. That's at
least a subliminal storyline. You have two probably the two

(02:27):
highest payrolls in college football going up against each other
like this is a clash of the Titans, and if
it gives us anything close to the excitement and competitiveness
level of last night, will be the better off. But
what I said has become true, which is despite the
fact that of the first eight games, really only one
of them, or maybe one and a half two of

(02:49):
them were truly entertaining. Once you get to the semi finals,
and if they're entertaining, everybody forgets the rest and says, oh,
this is great, Oh this is great. The other part
to it is And again this remains true as well.
We told you that the thing that makes college football
special is how important and impactful the regular season has

(03:12):
always been, and that went out the window. And there
is no easier case for that than Ohio State, who
lost to Oregon by a point and then lost to
Michigan at home and in any previous setting wouldn't be
in the College Football Playoff. Instead, they get new life
and now they have a chance to play for national championship.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
All right, Jay stew what's annoying you today? Or who's
annoying you today?

Speaker 3 (03:55):
I just sent you go to a text message with
a video that was sent out by Deshaun Watson's girlfriend
on Sunday in the middle of an NFL Sunday in
which the Browns were securing the second overall draft pick
in the upcoming NFL Draft. It's Deshaun Watson dancing with

(04:16):
his girlfriend on the side of a road. They're obviously
vacationing somewhere. And I think we've talked about you and
I have talked about this before. I don't understand how
these how public figures don't like try to figure out
that optics play such a big part, that perception is
reality in this social media world, and to like not

(04:38):
think that that was something that would piss off Browns
fans or and I'm guessing Deshaun Watson has reached a
point where he doesn't give two fucks about Browns fans
because they've never shown him any appreciation, which is great. Today,
it was announced that Deshaun Watson has re injured his
achilles and will likely miss next season. The speculation is

(05:04):
that he's probably played his last down in the NFL.
But you know, we could, we could go into karma
and what happens when you fuck with karma and things
like this happen. I just don't understand how you can
be on vacation, dancing on the side of the road
with your girlfriend on a Sunday and then have the

(05:27):
team announced on Friday that you've suffered another achilles tear.
This is what the Browns have offered up. Watson complained
of discomfort after rolling his ankle while in Miami. In Miami,
doing what, rowing his ankle, doing what. This whole thing's

(05:48):
annoying because it just seems like he's reached that phase
where he got away with something, he's getting very well compensated,
and now he's just kind of like rubbing it in
our face. I just I want to say a little
bit more punishment, but I guess I won't.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
No, I don't think you will. I just yeah, again,
I don't. I don't think you're gonna see it. And
I found it at least peculiar, and maybe it is karma,
or maybe I don't know that I saw that video.
I heard of the video that was on Sunday and

(06:28):
then the reaggravating or re injuring himself that was actually
that actually came out on like a Tuesday, So either
it was the next day or you know, I do
believe that he re injured himself. But there's also a
world to me in which they are like, ef it,
you'll never play here after posting that stuff. I'm not
really sure. So yeah, I just I thought I thought

(06:55):
the same thing, and I thought it was amazing to me, amazing.
What else?

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Fox Sports, I'm sorry, Front Office Sports is reporting that
the NFL average seventeen point five million viewers per game
across all of its broadcast networks, which is a really
big number, but it's actually a two percent decrease from
the prior year. Now, I already know that the NFL

(07:22):
is going to spend this. I have a feeling Roger
Goddell is going to say, look, fewer people are watching
satellite cable, a lot more people are streaming, and that's
represented in the actual ratings. Okay, so that's probably the answer.
But if Roger Godell is smart, he goes back to

(07:45):
his owners and he says, look, profits are up, everything's great,
but the quality of play and I'm hearing more and
more noise from people I respect that our products is
worsening and our ratings took a dip this year. We

(08:05):
need to do something, namely, rework this collective bargained agreement
where we almost never practice. It's showing in our product.
We need to convince the players' union that we all
suffer in the long term if we're not on the
field more with each other, practice time, off season stuff.

(08:30):
Sell the owners on renegotiating that thing for more practice.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Yeah, that's second happen, right. We do know this second
happen because in order to get them to practice more,
you're gonna have to pay them more. And I think
they're good with making a ton of money. I just
do at the end of the day. You know, all
these teams in the playoffs, I believe have their starting quarterback.

(08:58):
That's really what matters to them, and they're making a
gobs and gobs of money. I'm not saying you're wrong,
Jase two, but I'm saying all of this stuff is negotiable,
but you have to give something up. And they're not
giving up more money.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
Yeah, which I think makes us very annoying the entire situation.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
So this is much less about being annoying, and it's
more about being alarming depressing. I don't know if you
saw it, but there's a viral video out right now
of citizens apprehending the arsonist of the of the Calabasis fire.
I forget what the fire is called exactly.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Was that the young people who are like throwing gasoline tanks?

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Yeah, there are reports all over the city of possible arson.
There are reports all over the city of looting and
coordinated rooting, like vans driving into these abandoned houses, household neighborhoods,
and stealing from people that have left to say the least.

(10:12):
And if the pandemic didn't do this, this definitely does it.
My faith in humanity has never been lower. These are
signs of the end of civilization. Probably sounds like I'm
being exaggerative, but read any book about post apocalyptic times,

(10:34):
or any show or movie and it always just has
these people completely ignoring the rules, and it has these
heroes having weapons to protect themselves and their families and
their destitute and it's sad and depressing. Los Angeles feels

(10:55):
like that this week, you just feel it. I could
not be more alarmed by my fellow human being. Uh.
Three weeks ago, a homeless person set a sleeping woman
on fire in a subway in New York. It just
seems like the end of days is much more near

(11:17):
than we have predicted.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, it's uh, it's not good the idea that somebody
would do. I just I mean, it's it's really mental sickness.
But we have I do think we reap what we sell,

(11:42):
and we have celebrated in many ways a dystopian sort
of society, and uh we we. I frankly believe the
president elect has has benefited from that. I do. And

(12:04):
it's not just the side that one, it's the side
that lost panic over what's happening and desire for destruction
of it. It's all bad. It's all bad. I still
believe in the good and good of people. I do,
but there have been plenty of signs that tell me

(12:25):
that there are less good people than there are good people.
There are less good people than there are bad people. Again,
I still think we and I know you're a good
human being and Sam's a good human being and Dance
a good humn being. I still know we outnumber them.
But I don't know if the ratio is what it
used to be or it's simply the amplification of negative

(12:51):
people or criminals or criminal behavior or a dystopian society
that's amplified by social media. I think that's what it is,
and it's it's fucking gross. All this shit is fucking gross.
It's just gross, you know, I mean, even hell, even

(13:15):
people that think that that President elect Trump was like
that was a ruse, right, that he wasn't really shot at,
like somebody died, Like you really think that they're just
going to shoot somebody randomly in the stands when they're
trying to pull off a ruse pretend he was shot.
And just the idea that he was somebody shot at
a former president who was running for president and like,

(13:39):
I mean, did it help him, sure, but even the
idea that it happened is just fucking disgraceful. You go
to school shootings, lootings, you go to to people being
able to and I know they they've they've changed the
laws and now they're prosecuting people in Los Angeles County
and in San Francisco that walk in and and just

(14:01):
take things off shelves, like all of these things, Like
what the actual fuck is going on? That we have
the hope to be the best country in the world,
but somehow cannot fulfill that destiny. And again I would
even point out that all the bullshit this week about
Greenland and the Gulf of Mexico, like, hey, how don't

(14:22):
we fix all this shit here? Right? That was really
honestly the big thing that was his thing is, hey,
it's all a messa here. I'm gonna fix the mess here.
And before you even getting the job, the call to
order is let's go take over Canada and Greenland and
the Gulf of Mexico. Like wow, And he's not alone.
It's not simply the president of X fault. It's current

(14:43):
president's fault as well. But like, at what point in
time do we have enough pride in the place we
live to collect Cause it's not gonna happen on a
presidential mandate. It happens because enough good people go like,
you know what, I've had enough. I've just had enough,
and we apparently haven't reached that point yet. We're still

(15:06):
in the blaming place. His fault, her fault, their fault,
you know, anybody's fault but our own. And I think
it's fucking disgusting. I just do. The whole thing just
irritates me. It's one of the things that I love about, honestly,
about living in Wisconsin. I get it there. It was
cold today, we got a wisping of snow, about an

(15:26):
inch of snow or whatever. But I will tell you
that a lot of that bullshit is not here, and
it's just incredibly refreshing that people go to work and
then they come home and remember they go out and
have a beer and then they come home and whatever. Again,
not perfect. There are problems here, you know, there's a
big divide between cities and country folk and whatever. I
get it. But yeah, dude, I just this La stuff,

(15:49):
and even the way in which, like, do I think
the mayor of La has looked great? No, but we
act like she was supposed to know when she planned
a trip to Ghana. Now did we know the wins
were coming? Yes? Because I live in this world, and
it popped up on my phone. I think Sunday that

(16:11):
this week was going to be like historic level wins,
And anyone who lives in southern California knows historic level wins.
In the winter, especially after historic reign, there's going to
be fires. But I don't know if that's if it's
canceled your trip sort of fires. I don't know. But again,
even the lies that are told about the seventeen million

(16:31):
they cut from the fire department, like, no, they actually
added fifty million to the budget. It's just a budgetary thing.
Like all these fucking people fucking lie. What is the
purpose of it? And instead of working together to find
out This is where I'll actually have her back is
she's asked all these questions. She's like, right now, we're
just trying to help people. When we're done, we go

(16:53):
back and we find out who's the blame. Why are
we trying to find out who's the blame while there's
still fires going on. Just fucking get together and fix
the problem. So look, I would love to say it's
one side's issue. It's not. It's everybody's issue. But blaming
people mid problem is beyond corrosive and I just I

(17:18):
love southern California. I do. I love it. I miss it.
There's lots of things I don't miss about it, but
I love the cornucopia of people. You know, I grew
up in Orange, California. I went to high school in Testing, California.
It was the most diverse high school in Orange County,
which again that's not saying a lot, but you know,

(17:39):
on my basketball team, we had two brothers who are
Armenian Egyptian. I'm obviously Jewish. We had the basic white kids,
the basic black kids. We had military families, air Force, Marine,
et cetera. We had a little bit of everything. Like
that's California gives you a little bit of everything you
could ever want, just like when you grew up where
we grew up, Jason yukin ski and surf the same day.

(18:01):
It gives you everything. But the all of the other
muckety muck stuff that goes with it, and what has
happened to humanity is just it's just gross. And the
idea that someone would light these fires and burn up
everything that people own. You know, I don't know if
I've shared this with you guys, but really good friend

(18:23):
of mine actually several really good friend of mine's have
lost their homes now. One family they live in Brentwood,
just you know, two kids that are now out of
the house, both ones of college graduate dealens in college.
And one of my really good friends, and you know,
he's just devastated, Like that's their they raise their children

(18:44):
in their home. Their home is paid off. It's in
an incredible part of LA. And I know that people
who aren't in LA, like, well, they're rich, they can
just rebuild their home, Like you can rebuild a house,
but it's not the same home. Everything you own was
burned up. And I have another friend who lives in
the Palisades and like I have the video of her

(19:05):
walking up to her home and you know, with with
her significant other and it's cone and their animals were
inside and they couldn't get there because of the traffic
jam and the fire on Sunset Boulevard. And I mean,

(19:26):
I think about it now, like what do you do
if you lost your home in the Palisades, Like, well,
they'll rebuild it, Sure, they'll rebuild it. It'll be worth
three times what it was, you know when it burned up.
But I mean, there's not going to be any school
for a year. At least there's one place to shop

(19:49):
the village, which is incredible. Right, it was sprayed with
fire retardant, that's why it didn't burn up. But like
who shops there? Those are all going to be shut down.
And you may not feel sympathy for somebody who can
afford to live somewhere else, but no one wants to.
I would say seventy five to eighty percent of those
people work their whole lives to the Pacific Palisades are

(20:15):
the dream every human being should dream of living there.
I mean this, it's amazing. The public schools are nice,
the area is nice, it are are people rich, Yeah,
but most people fucking earned it. And whether this one
was set by our sin or any like, just I
don't know. It's just fucking disgusting. Sorry, and Doug.

Speaker 4 (20:37):
It doesn't help matters when a company, an insurance company
like State Farm last year cancels between sixty and seventy
percent of their policies in Palisades. And that's why they
have the nickname snake Farm is because some of those
homes actually will not be rebuilt for three times to value.
Like though these some of these people are are hard
up for they don't know what's going to happen because
so many insurance companies now are pulling out of the

(20:58):
state of California because of these incres dangerous weather events
that are causing just destruction everywhere.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Well, the insurance, I don't know. I don't know if
it's six. I don't know if it's sixty or seven.

Speaker 4 (21:10):
I saw seventy of people in Palisades who had State
Farm insurance.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Who had State Farm insurance were by the way I
can only I can listen, and I'm not in the
bag for anybody. Uh, this is a very minor thing.
But my car was my friend who's who was trying
to go rescue animals had my car and it was
partially melted. And I'm gonna guess when they take it

(21:36):
in the next couple of days, it's going to be totaled.
But and so it's like to me, it's like it's
a car, Like whatever, cut me a check for relatively
what's worth. State Farm is doing a really good job
again on a car. I just got my policy from them,
I don't know, three months ago, four months ago, whatever.

(21:56):
So I don't I'll I will when that stuff happened,
and I will you know, if somebody doesn't get their
home rebuilt, then of course we can easily land based
state farm. But let's wait until to see like who
is actually affected, what actually happens, before we just you know,

(22:18):
like let's let's not be part of the problem.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
On my point though, is that I know I've seen them,
I've seen that pulling out of the state.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
I've seen that report. Yeah, again doesn't mean that it's completely.

Speaker 4 (22:31):
Well, but when you have tens of billions of dollars
now need to be paid out, that's a lot of money.
A lot of these companies are going to be like, well,
it's it's not necessarily you're not going to get everything back.
It's just it's it's you know, it's hard when you
live up in the foothills in the mountains, you have
a beautiful home that's worth ten million dollars you've bought
for five million, ounce worth ten ten million. To get
that ten million back could be a little tricky when

(22:53):
you have this much wise, No, I get it.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
I mean, look, they've had the same problem in Florida
with the cost of ensuring people. Because hurricanes are worse
now than maybe they've ever been.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
It's good to live in Green Bay, Doug, Okay, because
like it might be, it's a pretty safe like you
think of some of these states with you know, you
can get tornadoes up there, and you can get blizzards,
but you know, the insurance I'm sure is a lot
lower because it's just a little bit safer from natural disasters.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
No, no question, even the insurance thing, right, it's the
do you believe in the good people? Do you believe
a company will do the right thing even if it
costs them a little bit more money? And again we'll
see usually what used to happen and here's where. And
I'm gonna just be honest with you, Jason, because I
know there's a lot of things that that Trump has

(23:38):
said that I know you agree with. There are some
of the things that he's said and done I actually
agree with. I will tell you the consistency of when
things go wrong, constantly wanting people to be fired and
blamed before you know, before bodies are even buried or
homes are even you know, completely demolished and started to
redone is fucking gross. And I'll use I'll use nine

(24:00):
to eleven as the example. Okay, there was about a
three week to month period after nine to eleven where
we were absolutely kind to one another, and we realized
that it was us against everybody else and that all
we had at the end of the day was each other.
And somehow we've lost that. Now it's not us, it's
only us. If you agree with us in our fucking

(24:21):
political stance, fuck that, dude, all we have, Like, here's
the reality, and this is why. Again, this is the
part of the Trump part that I agree with, which
is the stance supporting Israel, because the truth is that
the Hamasta dettacked Israel. If it was us standing in
their way, they would have been the same thing to us, right,
And the point is, all we have is each other,

(24:42):
and for whatever reason, we can't figure out how to
get along well enough to just unite amongst each other.
And I do believe that that begins at the political level,
and it filters down. I think that's the filter down
that happens. But the point is, it's not even close
all that. All of that. People setting fires, people looting,

(25:03):
people putting blame on others who are simply trying to
do their absolute best, people telling half of the story. Again,
I told the story about when we lost to Michigan Tech. Okay,
that we had some money. Who has no fucking bravery
in their soul used a burner account to use half

(25:23):
of a press conference to one and eighty degree misrepresent
what I said and made me out to act like
I disrespected an opponent that came in and beat us. Okay,
that's the exact same thing that has happened with people
misrepresenting the funding to the fire department. It's gross. It's gross.

(25:49):
So all of that shit is subhuman. It's not what
it's about right now. It's about putting out the fires
and taking care of people and figuring out how to
find play places to live, places to sleep, places to eat,
and places for their kids to go to school. That's it, period.
Stop and anybody who gets in the in the way

(26:10):
of that as a nice.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
Because we can.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
Travis Kelcey on the podcast with his brother earlier this week,
talked about the notion that they lost on purpose in
the Carson Wentz game on Sunday so they didn't have
to play the Bengals.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
There's some people alleging that it was a purposeful letting.

Speaker 5 (26:40):
Get your nobody.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
I wanted. I want to I want to slay.

Speaker 5 (26:47):
Every dragon one by one like Mortal Kombat. I don't
even want this to be like we play the lowest seed.
Just give me the best teams.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
I'm not in Travis. I'm just telling you.

Speaker 5 (26:56):
An give me Mortal Kombat style. I'll go through every
fucking one of them, just giving them my best fucking effort.
I ain't scared of the single soul.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Man.

Speaker 5 (27:06):
You didn't want to see the Bengals in Burrowhead or
in Cincinnati, I'll play them at the Walmart parking lot.
I don't give a shit. Can we can have our
own game in the off season.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
We really do it out to get it.

Speaker 5 (27:17):
I listen. I love competing against the greatest. The Bengals
were a fun ass fucking team to watch there towards
the end of the season.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
Yeah, that's how most athletes think. So I think we
can put that thing to bed. I would love to
see a little football in the Walmart parking lot would
be really good that I would go see. Why can
we play it for you? Because we can. That's it
for the end the Modus Podcast. Check out the radio
