Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, listen, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show, Years
in the Bonus with Doug gottlie.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What Up, Doug Gottlieb Show and the Bonus Fox Sports
Radio iHeartRadio app Welcome in, Okay. So if it's your
first time listening to the in the Bonus podcast, you'll
know that basically, and as it plays out on the
on the iHeart Podcast network is this becomes what the

(00:33):
first hour, even though we do it the last hour,
all right, So when you download, you hear this first,
then you hear the rest of the radio show. So
basically this is like an our radio show, only we
can say and do whatever we want and we don't
have to take traditional breaks and it's a little bit

(00:54):
more free flowing. We do have something called what the
Fox Says, which is basically, we play for you clips
really the day on either Fox Sports Trader or Fox
Sports One, then I comment on it. We have some
other cool stuff we do, like Your Annoying, where Jason Stewart,
who is annoyed by many, finds only a couple to
be annoyed by the in On a daily basis, we

(01:15):
try and determine who's the most annoying person in sports
on Earth. And then we have something called because we can,
where we play for you, usually an audio clip of
somebody cursing many times with other innuendo, and we can
do it unedited because it's a podcast. So we call
it because we can. So that's a and we have

(01:35):
really good stuff today. You know, we're creeping closer and
closer to the NCAA tournament. And it's it's super interesting
now that Alex Jensen was hired as are going to
be hired as the head coach of the Utah Jazz
And it's of Utah Jazz, Utah Utes, you tell you,

(01:57):
and look it. We talked but professional sports being a
copycat league, well college sports is as well, right, because
this comes on the heels of BYU hiring Kevin Young.
Kevin Young went to BYU. Kevin Young was an NBA assistant.
Kevin Young has they have to resurrect BYU. BYU was

(02:21):
really good last year with Mark Pope, but he comes
home to the Beehive and look at how good they are.
And again, the most important portion of this, most important
portion of this is that I mean Craig Smith was
fired after they beat Kansas Kansas State. Everybody in the sports says,

(02:45):
that's complete and utter bullshit, right, it just is like
I've always believed this. Of course you can, you can
fire this idea that well, they fired him because they
didn't want them to make the NCA term. You're allowed
to fire somebody whenever you want to fire them. That's
the reality is that we do that. We do this
song in a dance where the ad thinks they can't

(03:08):
fire a guy if he wins, So instead he wins
a couple of games and they fire a guy whorst.
Everyone still knows like that's a fucked up asshole move.
It just is. But you're allowed to And that's why
these coaches have sizeable buyouts. Craig Smith, I think it's
going to get five million dollars for two years to
not coach, or if he does coach, I don't think
he has offset. So I know Craig a little bit.

(03:29):
I feel terrible for him, but this is the business.
That's what Now the contract works, you can always do it.
So it didn't really make sense, like why would you
do that? What is the win in doing that? You know,
if the team's still playing hard for the guy, like
you can always at the end of the season fire him.
Now you can say, well, it's to get ahead of
the portal, like that's not how it actually works, you know,

(03:53):
not how it actually works. But Utah's obvious need to
be just like BYU. By BYU does it, and I'm
sure they went to their donors. You know. The big
thing with BYU is they have Ryan Smith, who owns
the Jazz, who's giving them supposedly a blank check to
build their team at BYU, right, and so you get
envy and jealousy and you want to do the same thing.

(04:13):
So you fire your coach to hire an alum. And
Alex Janson's a good dude, a good coach, good player.
He'll be fine, Like I hope he does well. But
it's always interesting to me on this thing that we do,
especially in college sports, where they'll fire a coach and
everyone around is like, well, why'd you fire him then?

(04:35):
And they all know they did it because well we didn't.
Thought if he wins too much, you can't fire him. No,
that's not true. You could always fire somebody and you
look just as clown as firing him after a couple
of regular season wins, as you would after a postseason win.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Let's get to what the Fox set and now every
day of this time in the Modus Podcast to play
for you a portion of a previous show on Fox
Sports Tradero or Fox Sports One. Here's Dan Patrick from
The Dan Patrick Show talking about Vikings and their quarterback
Sam Darnald.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
It seems like the Vikings are moving on from Sam Darnold,
and I think we're going to look back on eight
days eight days with Sam Darnold in Minnesota probably costume
I don't know, one hundred million dollars because he was
playing great. They were playing great.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
If he would have.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Gotten hurt Week fifteen, he probably would have gotten that
big contract from somebody in maybe Minnesota. But the eight
days that he had ended the regular season, postseason and
then they bow out, he was great until he wasn't.
And now all of a sudden, the market seems to
be drying up a little bit. It's like when you go, ah,

(06:00):
if that girl was available, there'd be a lot of
guys who'd want to date dater. Then all of a
sudden she's available and you're like, yeah, maybe not. Sam
Donald is kind of waiting. But what's it say about
Minnesota that they're going to stay with JJ McCarthy, who
got hurt, hasn't played yet, and Daniel Jones, who was
the starter with the Giants, is the backup there at

(06:22):
least for now, and they're going to let Sam Donald
go unless they can work out a deal. And I
think there's still the possibility of can they work out
a deal for Sam Donald.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
There's all different sorts of angles to the Sam Donald
thing right where you know, Mike Florio went on with
Dan Patrick and said that if they invest in Sam Donald,
JJ McCarthy's out, like they're not trading JJ McCarthy. If
you sign him to a two year reasonable deal, then
year two. JJ McCarthy's in year three, but really year

(06:58):
two of being a backup and eventually he'll take over
unless Sam's killing it. So my guess is that there's
still room for a deal to be made, even though
you're getting lots of people say that you should just
move on. I don't understand you're close. He came up

(07:20):
a great season Yes, he had a bad game, especially
bad playoff game under duress. Look at so many of
the quarterbacks who lost and how poorly they played when
they were under dress. So it's gonna be really interesting
to see what happens there. Here's Chris Bissard talking about
the Lakers.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
Very surprised that the Lakers are this good and Luca
and Lebron have gelled so quickly.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
Yes and no. I say yes because the question for
me was will Lebron not canny play off the ball?
Because he's improved on that the last few years, But
will he I thought, is he really gonna give up ball?
He can say that, he can think that, but when
push comes to shove a lot of times he's going

(08:04):
to be bringing the ball up court and he has
willingly gotten off the ball. And once he made that decision,
now you can see it working.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
And so I'm.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Surprised it's been so quickly because that was my only question.
It wasn't that could they play together? Because I always
felt if Lebron transitions at this point in his career
to just being a score, letting Luca be the facilitator
and run the offense and everything, then he can still
great rebounder.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Well, and obviously he's playing better das Lucas got there
so he can focus on this other stuff. And I'm
gonna say, I'm declaring it right now. Wow, Lakers are
winning the West.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Boa, whoa calling a shot? Lakers winning the West. I
do agree with Chris in terms of Lebron playing off
the basketball. It's been seamless or seemingly seamless, which is
a surprise. Here's Colin Kward talking about Steph Curry's mark
on the game.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
I don't think Magic he would be great today, but
I don't think his game ages as well. I think
Larry Bird's game ages better than Magic's because of the
three ball. I think Larry Bird today would be I mean,
what would he be? He would be Luca. I mean
he would be Luca in better shape. That would be
Larry Bird. He would be unbelievable past, unbelievable score, not

(09:19):
a great defender, but he'd be Luke in better shape.
You couldn't stop him. He'd score whatever hee he would
score forty points regularly. He could score fifty if you
wanted to. Bird ages very well. Magic's not a shooter
and it's a shooters league. That's why I don't like
the Houston Rockets in the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
They can't shoot.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
I don't want to hear about their athletes. They can't shoot.
And so but if you've never seen Steph play, he'd
never seen him play. Here's think about this. This is
how you would describe his game. He scores faster than
any human being ever. Like, remember when Reggie Miller got
like eight points and nine seconds. That's Steph's entire career.

(09:55):
He scores faster than anybody. So he changed I mean,
Magic Johnson may have said the NBA, but Steph Curry
revolutionized not only the NBA, international, high school, AU and
college basketball.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Yeah, so let's let's actually break down for you what happened.
Steph Curry, Okay, plays on and off the basketball. So
one of the things that's unique about him is he's
probably more dangerous when he doesn't have the ball because
he moves around so well. And obviously he's a great
catch and shoot guy. The next thing he did was

(10:33):
he took Gilward Arenas was the first one to take
that shots from that distance. Steph just shoots a much
higher percentage there. And Steph can shoot going left, can
show going right, and of course can catch and shoot.
So he's a little bit of There's some Gilbert Arenas,
only with a lot more efficiency. There's some Kevin Durant
in terms of this year volume of points and of

(10:55):
jump shots that he's making. And you know, then there's
just the idea of him playing kind of a combo
of positions. He's a combo guard. He can play with
the basketball and run some screen role, but he's probably
even more dangerous without the basketball. I'm doing both makes
him super, super dangerous. That's what the Fox said say.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Let's find out who what's annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
And now it's your annoying, Hey, Doug.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
Joey Bosa has been released by the Chargers. I'm gonna
say Joey's annoying because he couldn't be available. I think
when he was at his healthiest, he was one of
the most impactful defensive linemen in the game, but that
those games were just too few and far between. I'm
not gonna miss having to rely on Joey Bosa.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
He also though, had that dead pan thing that you
have in how he talks. It was always what we
do with the Chargers interviews, and he was just so
very matter of fact. You couldn't actually tell if he
was happy, if he's sad, if he's mad, if he's whatever.

Speaker 6 (12:18):
I kind of like that about him.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
I know you like that about him. So anyway, whatlse?
Who else are doing you?

Speaker 6 (12:27):
Did you see Jason Kidd's comments last night? He basically
had said that Kyrie wanted to be on the flour
that much forty minutes a game, because he was basically
saying that the narrative is that the MAVs ran Kyrie
into the ground causing this injury. That, of course, is

(12:49):
a direct attack at the coaching and the usage. You're
a coach. Don't all players want to be on the
court at all time? Isn't it up to the coach?

Speaker 2 (13:01):
That comes That comes from Rachel Nichols. Okay, that comes
from Rachel Nichols. That was right, wasn't Rachel Nichols tweet?

Speaker 6 (13:07):
I think she was out in front of that.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, she's whoever's telling her that's fucking stupid. It is dumb.
You don't hurt your knee. It's not a wearing an
A cl injury is not a wear and tear. It's
not a fatigue based injury. It's not how it works.
Not how it works. Yeah, guys want to play all
the time. If that was the case. Again, again, if
we're if we're doing the he played too much, then

(13:33):
why weren't guys just going down with a cls all
the time back when they all played eighty two games?
Anybody know? Because there's no correlation. It's just it's it's
just a silly one. And again, this is not Rachel.
Rachel's repeating something that somebody else told her. And you know,
and and this is you know, it's like we had
that with KD with the you know, it's not an

(13:55):
overuse injury. It's not how it works. No one says that,
No one with a medical degree that says, you know,
so I am so, I'm you're annoyed to Jason Kidd
having to defend himself, or you're annoyed at that narrative
that playing too much basketball somehow make you tear your knee.

Speaker 6 (14:19):
I'm annoyed at his defensiveness. I think that the When
you say that the player wanted to play that much,
it just comes off as pretty defensive. But the angle
on Rachel Nichols is unfair.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
I'm I'm gonna I'll disagree with you on that one too.
It's like you do. That's actually how it works in
professional basketball is you have to work with these guys like, hey,
how long you want to You know, you are your
own best doctor. And Kyrie's had a bunch of injuries,
bunch you know, he had the what was it a
toe in college and then he's had like just a

(14:53):
litany of other other injuries. So yeah, I mean, listen,
you can you can pick apart guy coaching, but playing
a guy too much and that's causing ACL. The only
thing that playing more calls ACL is there are more
times in which you could step on somebody's foot or
step incorrectly and terror ACL. But you know that doesn't

(15:16):
it doesn't make any sense to me that the he
played too much and that's why he tours ACL. That's silly.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
So topic this week was Travis Hunter saying that doing
what he does going both ways in football is harder
than shoe halo. Tawny, your your bottom line take on
that is he knows nothing about playing baseball, and it's
really not very interesting to hear what he has to
say about it.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Yes, Chat John's, it's exactly my take.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
Chad Johnson weighed in on the topic the most.

Speaker 5 (15:49):
The two multiple things in life are hitting the baseball
and keeping a woman happy long term, the two multiple.

Speaker 7 (15:56):
Things in life.

Speaker 6 (15:57):
Hear me, I would say that's the annoying part about
that is that he's almost making it equal that hitting
a baseball is as hard as keeping a woman happy.
I would say keeping a woman happy is by far
the hardest, and then like way down on the list
is hitting a baseball.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
It's so funny. Yeah, Tommy Losorda used to say, hitting
a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports,
you know, way harder to hitting the golf ball. That's stationary.
I'm not sure that I think he's right, but I'm
not totally convinced he's right because I've played both. But yeah,
you're right, Chad's he's a wild boy. He says some

(16:36):
things on that deal that's hysterical. Have you heard his
deal where he said he he wants he only wants
to date a woman with at least two kids. Have
you heard that part?

Speaker 6 (16:46):
I did hear that? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, did you, profet? Did you know the logical reason
why why he only wants to date a woman with
at least two kids because of snacks? Yeah, because of snacks?
Snacks is why? Yes? About why he why he only
wants to date women with at least two kids because

(17:10):
when they get when they get done? What I forget
what he said? It was like a horizontal workout that
he wants to get up and he wants good snacks,
and women that don't have kids don't have good snacks.
To Fidger or the cover. I think it's amazing. It's amazing.

Speaker 6 (17:27):
Chris's speechless.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
I would I would love that. I would like love
a case study on that from like some some single
guy who gets around be like, yeah, I mean here
a look, post it on social media. It's hysterical. What else?

Speaker 6 (17:41):
The basis being that women with kids have a bunch
of great snacks, yes, like gushers and Doritos and stuff.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Yeah heh yeah, oh yeah, what else?

Speaker 1 (17:55):
That's it?

Speaker 6 (17:55):
So Jason oh wait yeah, Jason kids comments, Joey Boson
never being available and Chad Johnson is way off on
his on trying to make those equal parts.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
Oh it's Joey Bosa, no questions, Joey Bosa, Joey Bosa
not ever being available, is it?

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Why are we doing this?

Speaker 7 (18:17):
I do.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Because we can.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
Kevin Durant is on a weird one this season. Man,
every time he opens his mouth, he sounds like a
guy like trying to be fired or something. He said
this a couple of nights ago.

Speaker 7 (18:35):
I always wonder what booing is going to do for
your team, Like it actually makes no sense. If you
really wanted to make your voice be heard, just get
up and leave and we'll feel that more than you booing.
So we need energy, you know what I'm saying. When
we down twenty, we need you to get a little
louder in there and cheer a little louder. And that's
what that was my thing once I started talking to
the crowd. It's just like, yeah, bowing has been a

(18:56):
part of a sports culture for the last fifty sixty years.
I think it's about time we put that up. You
know what I'm saying, Just get up and leave if
you don't feel like watching this team plays bad basketball.
Nowl and we were understand and that would make us
feel even worse, you know, seeing y'all getting up and leaving.
But the energy that they show, how loud they get
on a good night, I mean, it's second to none.

(19:18):
So I wanted to ignite that as much as possible.
And I'm sitting there like, yo, what the fuck? Like,
get yas up, Let's do something for us, you know
what I'm saying. So they responded, Well, it's nothing but
love and this with this fan base, they always supporting
and always show up and selling out every time every
game that I played here. So I think they really

(19:39):
really enjoyed this win tonight. And this is a type
of win, type of game team they can get behind
if we play that brand of basketball. So I understand going,
but that's some like nineteen sixty seventies shits just get
up and.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Leave classic Classic Durant telling people how they're allowed to
cheer or how they're allowed to bo or when they
should just leave instead of boeing. Why can we play
that for you? Because we can't. That's it for the
end the Modus Podcast. Check at the radio show every
