Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
What a Doug Gottlieb show. In the Bonus Fox Sports Radio.
iHeartRadio app. How are you. I hope you're doing great.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Welcome in.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
So the great thing about the podcast is we can
do some stuff you can't totally do on radio. And
I think this is a fastened deal. He fastined deal.
(00:38):
Uh do you think Jason? You and I talked about
this off air on the phone, and Sam, you can
feel free to hop it on this. Like the ACL
injuries have been the norm since we were kids, and
the studies have shown that women's a women are most
(00:59):
likely to tear the AC than men. That's because of
how your body is, Like women have wider hips. The
ACL you know, connects to the hip, goes down through
your knee. The angle is much more severe. You're putting
a lot more tension on it. If you're a woman,
then you are a guy. But if we think that
Jason Tatum, and at the time of this recording, I
(01:20):
don't believe it's been announced that he tore his achilles tendon,
but man, and you know, normally Achilles ten in tears
aren't that painful yet he was writhing in pain. But
if it was his Achilles tenant, granted it could be
a torn calf, right, it might not be that could
be a torn calf, but if it is the Achilles tenon, man,
(01:41):
that feels like a guy that's Jason Tatum's I don't
feel like it's yet in his prime and he tears
his Achilles tendon. And then when you factor in other
guys who have torn their's achilles, like, yeah, Kobe did it,
but it was at the end of his career, right,
who else just tore their achilles? Oh, Damian Lillard did it.
But Damian Lillard's in his mid thirties. So when you
(02:07):
got a guy in his mid twenties tearing his Achilles tendon,
and then you start to look at the data and
go like, Okay, Katie was older but still tears's Achilles tendon.
Damian Lillard was older but still tears his Achilles tendon.
Is there something about how basketball players or athletes are
building their body where all of a sudden, now the
(02:27):
achilles is even more vulnerable for a full tear. Jason,
I'm not making it up. It does feel like it's becoming,
you know, whereas guys are playing living, lasting longer, the
Achilles feels like it's not.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, it's like it's yet.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Right, seems like it seems like an older player injury
for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, Dominicquilkins tored his Achilles at the end of his
career now r Vitas Sabonis, when he was playing before
he came to the United States, he toured. I think
that's fairly early in his career. I don't know the
exact date, but yeah, I again, and I'm not reporting
that he towards Achilles tendont. I don't know if that's
where it is. I've seen a lot of internet doctor
(03:19):
sleuth saying that's what it appears to be. Nonetheless, it
feels really really early in his career to be tearing
Achilles tenant and devastating and oh yeah, by the way,
I know, insurance actually picks up the cost. Right when
you signed a three hundred million arc A contract extension,
it's insured. So I think the Celtics are coming out
of pocket for three hundred million dollars over the life
(03:40):
of the deal. But that money is linked into one
guy and unless he retires, which he's not going to retire.
You're not going to get anything out of that contract
for a year. In other words, you're screwed. So this
ends up being a week where man, I could be wrong,
(04:00):
but I think the Mavericks looks smarter and smarter and smarter. Obviously,
they lucked into the number one overall pick in the draft.
Luca's lack of conditioning in defense really hurt the Lakers.
And oh yeah, by the way, if there's ever a
player who's not in shape that you feel I could
suffer a debilitating injury, wouldn't be Luka Doncik when he's
not in shape, and the Mavericks are probably sitting there going,
(04:20):
see Jason Tatum's in shape and he hurts himself, what's
gonna happen to Luka.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Donc Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Let's get to the Foxes and now every day of
this time in the bonus podcast, play for you a
previous version of a Fox Sports Trader Fox Sports One Show.
Here's Colin Cowherd, host of the Herd talk about the Knicks.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
If you'd never watch basketball and you tune into that game,
and I said, find the champion. It looks like the Knicks.
They've got a swagger, a confidence, shot making and attitude,
even before the Tatum injury, which was obviously awful. And
we're not going to speculate, but that looked really bad.
We'll find out more today an MRI New York. It's
(05:13):
only three to one Nicks. It felt like it was
over five minutes before the Tatum injury. The confidence, the
shot making. I'm sitting here watching everybody on that team
dependent on nobody great ball movement. Josh Harten didn't need
a bunch of points. He'd touch it, get it into
somebody who's hot. But when I watch the Knicks all
(05:34):
year long, I've thought, you know, they've got to solve this.
They need another shot maker. I'm watching this series and
I'm like, maybe they need to tweak a more dependable big.
But I don't think they need much, at least to
win the East.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah. I mean, like, look, let's be honest.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
As much as they closed out the Celtics the game
and the Celtics did kind of discombobulate there. The game
was still in the balance when Jason Tatum got hurt, right,
And if you take a snapshot of many NBA games,
many NBA playoff games, one game to the next does
(06:20):
not look the same, right, Like, if you watch the
exact same two teams in game three, you would have thought,
how are the Knicks even in the playoffs. So I
just I don't want to be one of those guys
that's so knee jerk. I love the Knicks. The energy
that the Knicks being good and continue to play means
(06:40):
for the entire league. I think all of that is important.
And you guys know, Jalen Brunson is my favorite NBA player.
That said again, it just you become a parachute in
fan if you go, oh, last night, they look like
NBA champions. Yeah, two nights before they look like they
look like shit. So here's Dan Patrick talk about the
(07:03):
NBA Draft lottery.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
It's one of those moments where you're watching and you're
watching it it almost slowed down. I'm watching, I'm going, oh,
my goodness, so Utah's out, New Orleans is out. I'm going, okay,
and let's go to break And then they come back,
I go, I'll be damn, Dallas is gonna win. There's
(07:25):
gonna be people who say conspiracy theory or why would you,
you know, do something go out of your way to
help the Dallas Mavericks. As our good buddy Vincent Goodwill says,
I've watched the lottery, picked up the ping pong balls
myself to see how they they're weighed, et cetera. Not
only is draft rigging in that way really hard to do,
(07:47):
it's also a federal crime. We don't want to, you know,
have something like that get in the way of our
conspiracy theories. But when you do think about it, there
are times when you go things that make you go.
So Patrick Ewing going to the Knicks, Dereck Rose going
to the Bulls should get a little more emphasis here
(08:08):
because they had like a one point eight percent chance
to get him, and he goes to his hometown. Lebron
goes to his hometown. The Dallas Mavericks don't deserve this,
but then they get Cooper flag.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, I just why would the league? I said this
to the radio, showing a mean it. But let's just
be really really simple about it. If the league got
caught rigging their lottery. There would be no NBA. It
would not be a true sporting event. It would be
(08:41):
entertainment like THEWW is right, which is not sports. So
there's zero point zero percent chance that there was any
sort of conspiracy for the Dallas Mavericks to get Cooper Flagg. Additionally,
and this is maybe most importantly, why would the league
want to do the Dallas Mavericks any sort of favors?
Speaker 3 (09:03):
They wouldn't. They wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
You know, if it was anywhere you would think, it'd
probably be Washington, right, the nation's capital, having just a
disaster of a basketball team. They could use a Cooper flag.
But all of those things are interesting coincidences. But I'm
just telling you that's all that they actually are. Here's
two pros and a cup of Joe talking about the
(09:28):
NFL schedule leagues.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Is that.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Is that a oh?
Speaker 3 (09:33):
No?
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Is that a leak?
Speaker 7 (09:36):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (09:39):
I think that is a leak.
Speaker 8 (09:42):
In fact, I'm seeing a league right here that apparently
a playoff rematch is expected in week ten on Monday
Night Football, that being the Packers hosting the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Leaks are already coming out. Look at that, Look at that.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Lee.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
By the way, Why would this be one of the
games that they would leak.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
What is it, like, what's the significance of this. It's
a random game when week ten, Week ten, Monday Night Football,
November tenth.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
Okay, I'm out on this whole league thing, the whole
The NFL has made something out of the draft, they
made something out of the combine.
Speaker 6 (10:22):
They haven't figured out the schedule.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Release.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
This is not working for me. I don't think it's
working for other people too.
Speaker 7 (10:28):
SAME's corny. Just release schedule. But I mean, it's not
as bad as this leak noise. It is not even
anywhere close to this.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
I love the leake noise, but I'm with these guys
on the leaks. It's like, if you want to announce
the opening game, sure, a couple of big ones, sure,
But the idea is, oh, we got one. Why is
that the marquee one. It's in limbeau Field, it's defending champions.
They did play to start the season in was it
(11:04):
Rio de Janeiro last year, in Brazil last year, So
I think that's the reason behind it. But yeah, generally,
I don't really think the leaked thing has has hit
the way they'd wanted to hit. That's what the fuck
said say.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Let's find out who are what is annoying?
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
And now it's your annoying?
Speaker 4 (11:41):
All right, let's pick up where you left off there
with the guys on two pros. I don't have any
weaking noise, but I will say this, I think we
have the exact same exchange every year. The weeks that
have come out have been the International Games mostly, and
I don't know why they're done in such a celebratory fashion.
(12:04):
In other words, shifter and the insiders when they announce it,
they put like exclamation points. First team to ever play
back to back games overseas, and like, I don't get
the celebratory fashion of that. Why why is a shifter?
(12:25):
And the like why are they excited about this? Who's
excited about this? And then you typically say this isn't
this isn't about you, and I'm like, okay, cool, I
really don't care if the NFL adds another zero to
their revenue. That's not my interest I'm just wondering why
why they expect us to be excited about the international schedule, Like,
(12:49):
what what's in it for me other than waking up
at five thirty in the morning to see a game.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
I don't think they are I think the international schedule
is you know, look, it's just a different time slot
for them, a different ability to generate more money. And
I think it obviously because the timing of it is
a standalone game, and that's why I think it's getting
the focal point.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
But I'm with you this.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
The international ones are weird. Just the sporadic nature of
the leaks is weird. I don't think they've hit the.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Mark, but it seems like these guys want us to
be excited about it, of course, and I don't know
what I could possibly care that Dublin is hosting a game.
I guess if I'm a Vikings fan, I care because
it's a little interesting and that's one least game I
could book to go watch or something. But I'm still
(13:42):
confused on that. Someone knows you explain that to.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Me, Well, I'll do my best. But again, I think
it's I think they're they're trying to serve too many
masters with these things and what they're excited about, what
they're not.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
So Edwards, Oh, the there was a I think ESPN
had a headline led by Anthony Edwards speech at halftime
the t Wolves pull away from the Warriors, like, whoa,
this is the Anthony Edwards who has not been a leader,
who has just like Logan Roy says about his kids,
(14:23):
he's not a serious person. We've been making fun of
the fact that he doesn't want to be the face
of the NBA, that he's generally immature. What did he
say at halftime to spark this this this win for
the te Wolves and then they let him afterwards summarize
what he said to the players.
Speaker 9 (14:43):
I told him, you know, we got to get two
more wins, and right now we're playing like we already
got four wins, Like we're playing like they're gonna lay down,
and knowing his team, knowing their head coach, they're never
going to lay down. So we had to. We had
to figure it out, man, because if we would have
kept playing like that, we would have lost the night.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
I mean, you've been in a lot of walker rooms
at half, You've heard speeches from players and coaches, you've
given a lot yourself. That sounds like one of the
most uninspiring speeches I've ever heard in my life.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Uh it is, But again, that's a secondhand speech of
a copy of a copy, right, I remember multiple the multiplicity,
a copy of a copy of the guy was shaving
his tongue, So it's better than shaving your tongue.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Not appropriate sort of intonation with the speech. What else?
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Cooper Flagg was a part of the presentation of the
NBA A lotteral last night. It seems like I've been
saying this for a couple of decades. The NBA has
not figured out how to make the draft lottery interesting.
And it's almost like they tell people not to have
a personality. It's like, you know, if you ever go
(15:47):
to like a TV sitcom or even like Jay Leno
back in the day or whoever, you have the hype
guy to come out and get you all excited. It's
almost like they have an anti hype guy that comes
out and says you can't have a personality for the
next half hour. The presentation for this thing is just dreadful.
It's like everyone is there at gunpoint, there's like this.
(16:09):
This also a problem with the familiarity. I want to
say six of the lottery teams had first round picks
from last season, none of which I've actually heard of.
That seems to be a problem, right, Lottery picks from
last season that I'm unfamiliar with totally determine the lottery
(16:29):
of this season.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Well, they don't determine the lottery of this season, but
it just shows on how much of a crapshoot the
draft is, especially in last year where it.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Seemed like a down year.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
The only defense I could have for the NBA is
the only way you're going to learn about them is
to see them.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
And that's why I thought they had them there last night.
Who else?
Speaker 4 (16:47):
But I'm thinking, Okay, so Cooper Flagg was in the audience,
so he's going to say something now, so this, this
very boring presentation is actually going to get interesting. Cooper
Flag's going to say something interesting. And he said this.
Speaker 10 (17:01):
For me, I didn't try and think about it too much.
I feel like it was just kind of out of
my control. So I'm just kind of going through the
process like everybody else and just trying to enjoy every
single moment because we only get to do this once.
I think Like I said, this is this entire experience
for me has been amazing. So going forward, I'm just
going to look forward to that. Like you said, being a
two way player, that's something that I've done since I
(17:21):
was a little kid. So I'm just gonna try and
keep doing that to the best of my ability. It's
just an incredible experience to be here, to have this opportunity.
I mean, this is what I dreamed of since I
was a little kid.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
That was like an exercise on how many cliches you
could shove into three answers.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Yeah, I think the.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Look, he's only eighteen years old, and there does come
a point to where we don't give you a pass
on age, especially when you have the vast amount of
experience at a young age in handling the media. Because
he was the number one prospect in high school. He
was he was at Duke, and there were a lot
of cliches there. But again, and maybe this is me
(18:05):
searching for the positive as opposed to the negative, which
I don't know if you search for the negative, I
know you search for whatever the opposite of BS.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Is Jason, But the.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
One way you can look at it, if you choose to,
is Yeah, it's cliche, but at least at least it
kind of all works together. It's a little but not
totally robotic. He's not just out there saying stupid shit,
and it's not like he can't form a sentence, So
(18:35):
there's something to work with there, even if there's no
realness to it, right, if there's no real kind of
texture to his common don't not making sense?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Right?
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Like it it's the Yeah, that was a bunch of
little cliches added together. But I'm not super offended by
it for an eighteen year old kid, Like, I'm.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Like, yeah, he could, could he be better? Sure, he'll
get better. Was he a disaster? He was not a disaster.
Not disaster.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
So the NBA Draft lottery presentation, the TV in.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
General, yeah I was born yeah?
Speaker 4 (19:08):
And speech ye uninspiring?
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (19:12):
And why are we excited about international games? Again?
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Uh, I'm gonna go with the why are we excited
about international games? Like it just feels like it's for
somebody else, Right, it's for the TV networks, it's for
ex patriots who live overseas, and it's it's for the sponsors.
It's not for any of us. And oh yeah, by
(19:38):
the way, some of them, we got to get up.
If you're West Coast, you gotta get up ungodly early
if it's your team playing all the way out there.
So yeah, I'm not. And then the first ones announced, Yeah,
I'm off.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
I'm with you. You're noying.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Why are we doing this because we can. Jeff Tigue,
I'm not sure how many years he played in the league.
I'm not even sure if he's still in the week.
I don't know much about Jeff Tigue, but he says
funny things, and he cusses a lot. And he said,
of everybody of the ever had to guard in the NBA,
(20:15):
one guy is the one guy that he hated guarding
the most, and it was Derek Rose.
Speaker 11 (20:21):
The Rose, look you in your face, pulls is one
on one. You stopped me. See if you can stop me.
And you know he going to the basket and you
can't stop it. See Kyrie and them shoot threes and shit.
So you kind of on the string with him, like
he's pulling three, Like all right, this shit, I can
contest it. He make it go ahead. The Rose going
to the basket every time, and you know.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
It, nothing you can do, right, I'm coming right at you.
I'm going by you, I'm going to the hoop, and
nothing you can do. I thought I was getting set
up for somebody who had bo or somebody who had
bad breath. Not somebody goes by you. Why could play
it for you? Because we can't.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
That's it for the end.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
The Motors Podcast Take at the radio show every day
three to five Eastern, twelve two Pacific, Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio app I'm done out.
