Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, you know this is the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Heres in the Bonus with Doug gottlo.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
What do Gottlieb Show and the Bonus Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio app Welcome, Welcome, Welcome in. Hey. Do you guys
remember did you ever watch the movie The Irishman. It
was a straight to Netflix, wasn't it. It didn't come
out in theaters. Okay, The point is if we remember

(00:32):
The Irishman? Okay, and Jay Su you're the perfect guy
because you're like me, You're a big movie buff. Right.
The Irishman had all of the things of all of
the Italian mob movies that we needed. Right. It had Peshi,
it had to Nei Row, it had the old timers,
It had Scorsese, it had like it had Puccino. Right,

(00:54):
it's like, mah, just star Star Star Star Star. But
whether it was that it wasn't edited enough, so it
seemed to drag on, Whether it was that they had
to make sure that every one of those stars had
their scene, whether it was that Scorsese had lost some
of his fastball, whatever it was, no one would ever say, hey,

(01:18):
you know, there's Goodfellas, there's the Godfather one and two.
You know, there's Casino, there's and then there's and then
there's the Irishman. It's it's not even in that conversation
of the greatest Italian gangster movies, mafia movies of all time, right,
not even it won't even make any list, and everybody
loves their lists. Is that fair? I think it's fair.

(01:43):
And again, this is not me being critical of Scorsese,
one of the elite movie makers of any generation, or
of any of the actors. Just sometimes they're a little
bit past their prime and you're trying too hard to
stir up all those memories of the past. I was
watching the Warriors last night and it just you watch

(02:04):
the Lakers, you watch the Warriors, and you're just like, look,
I get it. Lebron's great, I get it, Steph's great,
and Jimmy Butler's great and Draymont. But it's time next generation.
And you could say, hey, Steve Kirk can say hey,
we would have gone to the NBA Finals if we
had Steph Curry. I'd love to believe that. But Jimmy

(02:26):
Butler does not look like the same Jimmy Butler. That's
why Miami traded him away. He won a new contract.
They weren't doing it, and it's not because of anything other. Yeah,
Jimmy Butler can be annoying, but it's also he's not
what he was a couple of years ago. Nobody is
in sports, especially right and Steph Curry. As much as

(02:47):
we can sit there and go, he still does amazing things.
And he closed out their last series, and he closed
out the Olympics. He's not able to be as consistent.
And the injuries like a pulled a hamstring, that's what
happens as you get older. I'm watching the Warriors last
night and I see Draymond, I see Steve Kerr, I
see Jimmy Butler, right, and then I see I see

(03:10):
Steph Curry and Sibby's and I'm like, feel like it's
the Irishman. It's got so many of the check marks
of what should be a great story, and yet it's
just not ever going to match up to the movies
of the past.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Be short to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Lets get to what the Fox says and now.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
What does the Fox Say.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Every Day this Time and the Doug Gottlieb Show. In
the Bonus Podcast, we share with you something we've heard
on Fox Sports Trader or Fox Sports One. Here's Dan
Patrick talking about the nixt Celtics game heading back to
the Garden for Game six.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Now you go to the Garden and there was all
the pressure on the Celtics to start the series. Now
there's no pressure. They're not even favored in this game,
Game six, and you have a built in excuse, Not
that you're going to use that, but you can, Hey,
we didn't have Tatum Porzingis wasn't healthy. If they had

(04:14):
been healthy, really the Celtics shouldn't even be in this position.
Those first two games at home, you blew those that
really you should be advancing, you know, with or without Tatum.
But you know you played well last night. The first
two games, you didn't shoot well. You shoot forty five
percent from three point range. You're going to win if

(04:35):
you're Boston. But now you go back to New York
and is there a bigger New York game? When's the
last time you can remember a game of this magnitude
in the Garden. I don't know if you go back
to the NBA Finals in nineteen ninety nine.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yeah, I mean, what was what was the It's been
since nineteen ninety nine that the Knicks have closed out
a series at home again. I don't know how you
guys feel, and I don't believe we're on in New
York City. Although now with the app and with Serious
XM picking up parts of our show, you know, if

(05:16):
you're listening to New York City, great, we love you, Okay,
But the point of it is that this is not
I'm a son of a New Yorker. I'm not a
New Yorker, but I'm a basketball dude. I don't I
can't think of another place in the NBA that I
would rather watch any NBA game ever, I mean this

(05:42):
than Celtics Knicks Game six, where like the Knicks are
kind of like it's sort of the favorites there. I
know that Vegas has them as kind of an even
sort of favorite, right, but the reality is Jason Tatum's out.
So most people think I think the Celtics should win this,
that Nick should win this series. The Celtics probably are,

(06:05):
I mean, as they show that they were up twenty
in Games one and two up thirty in Game three up.
The game was not really competitive last night, even without
Jason Tatum. Like, I still think that if they played
a hundred times, the Celtics would probably win more than
Knicks would. That said, most of the world thinks the

(06:28):
nick should close out this series. And part of that is, like,
this is why you went out and got all those
Villanova guys, right, because at the end of the day,
you're like, winners win, They just they know how to win.
I am so fired up for that basketball game, and

(06:49):
you know, we're always real with you here. Most NBA
games are a snoozefest. Even the playoff games can be
like they're exciting first five minutes and then you know
them out of the lead teams come back, they make
a run, it's tied in the fourth quarter, and now
we get down to But that game is going to
be just e electric, perfect building, perfect night. Two iconic franchises,

(07:15):
one that has been successful throughout decades, one that hasn't
been able to win a title since the nineteen sixties.
It's that's gonna be awesome, awesome. When can I remember?
I can't remember, and I have a really really good memory.
Here's Brady Quinn talking about the likely change to this

(07:35):
year's College twelve Playoff, with four buys going to the
four highest ranked playoff teams opposed to the four conference winners.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
We make these quick judgments on the structure of the
playoff purely because we're looking at a group of four,
a group of five, you know, team in Boise State
getting the buy and getting the chance to be that seed.
We looked at Arizona State and in the same manner,
and so now how it's gonna work as the top
four seeded teams will end up getting the buy. So

(08:04):
we're going we're actually basically putting it back towards the
committee instead of allowing the football on the field to
dictate who gets the buys. So I'm not here to
say I have a huge issue with it. I don't
think it's right based on how you did it last year.
I would have liked to see how things played out.
But I do think the hardest thing with the old

(08:28):
format was as these conferences get bigger, speaking of the
Big ten, the SEC in particular, it gets really hard
to measure the strength of schedule and look at them equally.
So I think that's where there's a bit of a
frustration from the side of the Big ten and SEC
is those conferences don't feel like these other conferences or

(08:49):
teams are playing as difficult as schedules, and so when
they're not a conference champ, when they don't get the
chance to have that buy, they feel like it's being
held against them because they plan a tougher conference, because
they plan it a tougher schedule.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, listen again, I don't think anybody really finds in
our it just last year was the best lay plans.
Advice to men often go awry. Right. I'm sure they thought, hen,
this is the perfect way to do it, and then
it came out like, oh wait, what Boise State on
the top four seeds. It'll take them a couple of
years to get it right. This is a closer step

(09:28):
towards getting it right. Closer step towards getting it right.
Here's Colin Cowher talking about the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Speaker 6 (09:37):
So, Kansas City does not have a great old line
and they're going to try to figure it out, and
they're using a backup at left tackle that hasn't really
started and been the man from the Niners. So and
it's a hard unit to create cohesion. And if you
look at their first ten games, even the teams that
we view as weaker teams like the Giants, good pass rush,

(10:00):
Jacksonville pass rush Raiders Max Crosby, so even the WUS
could create problems for them. Forget Denver that led the
NFL in sacks, you face them. Conversely, the Chargers. Jim
Harball look at his career in year two. Everywhere he goes,
Chargers revamped run game, high end, left and right tackles,

(10:27):
have a cookie dough soft schedule in the middle of
the season to gain momentum. So my prediction that the
Chargers win this division with a weaker schedule really plays
in the middle of the season. You're starting to get
dinged up, you're not playing with full rosters. It is
really soft for the Chargers.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah again, like I just we don't. You don't have
any idea. Do you know the Chiefs are going to
be good. Yeah, they have Pat Mahomes, they have any
read they're gonna be good. But there have been years.
Pat Mahomes has been hurt before. Like if he gets hurts,
totally different deal. I just I hate doing that. This

(11:09):
is a hard schedule. This is a soft schedule.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
This is.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
How are we supposed to know? Like again, you see
the Bears on your schedule. The Bears have not been
particularly good in recent years, right, and obviously with the
story out today, who knows how the world's gonna react
to Kayleb Williams. But that said, they went out and
overhauled their roster, new coaching staff. We have no idea

(11:37):
what that team's gonna look like. So let's not talk
about we know what a schedule looks like. I just
that part to me is I don't get. I don't get.
That's what the Fox said, fuck say.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Let's find out who are what is annoying? Jason Stewart.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
And now it's your annoying?

Speaker 7 (12:11):
I do wanna? I want to pick up where you
just sopped off the cow Herd saying that the Chargers,
you know, have a very easy middle of the schedule.
I actually heard the phrase today by another talk show hosty,
this team's got a soft November. They could they could
win all their games in November, and you'd start thinking,

(12:33):
like what goes into that prediction. Uh, here's what doesn't
go into the prediction, any or all injuries that could
take place between now and November. How about that as
just if there's if there's one thing that you want
to point out as something that could disqualify a segment
of radio. You did not take into account any or

(12:56):
all of the injuries that will affect each team that
they play in November or the team that you're talking about.
That's that's why predictions are ridiculous. But today, I think
the people that do NFL content content are given a
free pass for one day to now we can go
over all the schedules and talk about the overs and unders,

(13:19):
and it's it's ridiculous radio. It is hot air that
doesn't serve anybody. Speaking of hot air, this might be
the original hot air. I know you're I know you're
a big supporter mad Dog. Mad Dog. Everyone wanted to
hear what he was gonna say about Pete Rose and

(13:40):
major League Baseball. Mad Dog, I think is paid by
Major League Baseball, so this is a tough one. But
this is him screaming at you for the for the
next minute.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
See, is he a bad guy? We all know that.

Speaker 8 (13:54):
Should he have gabbled, absolutely not, But twenty five years
really then, gonnas, you know, hang on to fact. Well,
he can't hurt the legacy anymore because he's dead. What
do you mean you can't hurt the legacy, but you're
gonna hit the legacy.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
What's Lincoln's legacy?

Speaker 8 (14:09):
He saved the cutchy, he's alies dead.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
My god, Oh mndy. It's holier than the nonsense.

Speaker 8 (14:15):
And this is a sport that I love that I
spent my freaking blessed twelve years doing twenty three twenty
four hundred shows.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
I don't like to support Rose. We all know what
he was like.

Speaker 8 (14:24):
And I had him in the studio for two hours,
not five years ago, and that's when Rose told us
a story about the whole thing with the with the
ket I tell you what about Rose?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
You want to kill him into the couns, Come on,
I'm all for it. Go ahead and kill him.

Speaker 8 (14:37):
And the times they've used Rose to make money, Oh,
it's disgraceful.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
Baseball should be embarrassed. They really should.

Speaker 8 (14:43):
They could have been done with this five years ago,
ten years ago. They could have been done with this.
You know what, guys, it's twenty five thirty years. Let's
let him in all Let's make him eligible. He's not
gonna be a manager, Let's make him eligible so at least.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
He can have a day in Cooperstown.

Speaker 8 (14:57):
Baseball couldn't do that and let Pete be at cooperstow
out and have a day.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
They couldn't do that.

Speaker 8 (15:02):
Or there's other craps in Cooperstown. They could have given
Rose a chance to do that.

Speaker 7 (15:06):
Okay, So the easy counter argument to all this is
that that was probably a part of the calculation with Manfred.
He didn't want Pete Rose while he was living to
have the gratification sure that he was let into the
Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Well, he also he also talked out of both sides
of his mouth there with the legacy thing.

Speaker 7 (15:24):
Do you think Yeah, But I mean I think Manfred,
if if you're going to criticize the move, that's one thing.
But like this was his kind of ode to to Giamati,
the late Giamatti who banned Pete Rose from baseball. He
wasn't going to allow Pete while he was living to
get the gratification that he was in the Hall of Fame,
and I think that that's fair. That's fair. I'm surprised

(15:48):
that Russo comes out this hard for Pete Rose in
this circumstance. I can't wait for Bob costas I have.
I searched for it this morning. And forgive me. If
you see Bob ks weighing and on this the last
two days, please send me the link. He typically is
right in line with my thoughts on these things, and
I want to I want Bob Costs to give his

(16:10):
very articulate reason why Pete Rose should not be in
the Hall of Fame. And I can't wait for it.
And Chris Russo's rant is just ridiculous.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Uh yeah, yeah, Well, first of all, you say that,
what did you say about I'm a big supporter of
mad Dog. It's not what it is.

Speaker 7 (16:31):
I think he nostalgia for your dad and stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Right, well again my dad aside, it's like the it's
like the NBA current NBA players right now. The thing
is he's still doing it right, so it's not like
he's retired. But this is he is a guy. He
is a on anybody's He and Mike francessa together, Mike

(16:55):
and the Dog are on anyone's Mount Rushmore of sports radio.

Speaker 7 (17:00):
Yep, I'll give you that, okay.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
So I just.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
And what I found is people who are just now
learning about Mad Dog, like, who is this guy? First
of all, he's absolutely brilliant in terms of his preparation,
Like I'm okay saying like, there's no sport that I
am as prepared for an argument of that in comparison

(17:26):
to Mad Dog Russo in baseball, specifically in New York baseball. Right,
he is an encyclopedia, as is Francesa.

Speaker 6 (17:34):
Right.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
They are old school, they've been doing forever, like encyclopedia
and with baseball, like he watches games, he takes notes
chapter verse. I don't love it that way. I don't
think that's how we do it. But again it's out
of full respect and admiration for the industry that they've
built that I will always go like, hey, don't mad
Dog's protected class. But with that comes the and this

(17:58):
is why Mike and the Dog were so good. Was
you know they could go back and forth and Dog
could be crazy, Mike could be balanced to and we
know this and it was a great show. The point
is that just because I would I will say he's
a godfather of the business that I've made my livelihood
putting my kids through college because of doesn't mean I

(18:21):
can't be critical of a take, right, And if we
go back through his take, his take was he was
a horrible human being. He lied about it continuously. His
legacy shouldn't change because he's dead. But baseball should have
just done away, just let him have his day. Why

(18:42):
why he said fuck you to baseball for the last
thirty five years. There's no reason that baseball has to Again,
this is just like the steroid thing, and you can
I saw Saint Davis again, sess a friend of mine,
but it's like, hey, he's different than steroids because it
didn't affect the actual game. That's bullshit. Again, he never

(19:02):
came clean about gambling on baseball when he was a
player manager. So and again that's because you do have
an effect on the game when you're playing. You can
throw a game, drop a ball, do whatever. So my
point is multiple points. One no unpete two. I like

(19:24):
a good doggy rant because at the end of it,
you're like, what did I just hear?

Speaker 4 (19:27):
I was?

Speaker 2 (19:28):
I was wildly entertained.

Speaker 7 (19:30):
I'll give you that. Yeah, so we talked about this
at length on the radio show. I know, but I
the kind of the bottom locked then that annoys me
about this Caleb william story. And I'm hoping that Caleb
Williams the details here and the embarrassment, hopefully that he
kind of suffers from it. And then the Shador Sanders
saying that we just went through. I hope it's I

(19:50):
hope these are used as cautionary tales for future people
that think that they could change the way the NFL
does their business. This was a drastic miscalculation on Caleb
William's part because we saw the way he played this
past season. There was an overvalue to his ability to
be a quarterback in this league. Maybe he'll be good
at some point. He was not great, He wasn't certainly

(20:13):
wasn't the guy that could dictate where he wanted to go.
Shoudr Sanders and his dad massive over calculation in his value.
I just the annoying part to me is that obviously
NIL has impacted the way these players think of themselves
and think of how they could do business in the NFL.

(20:35):
And I do think that the grander play is for
that second contract that second quarterback contract, generational wealth, your grandkids'
kids could spend your money. And they're trying to dictate
the easiest path to get there, the best way to
get there. I understand that, but there are no shortcuts.
The NFL has a system. The NFL has their format,

(20:58):
and don't try to changed that structure. And the cautionary
tales should be Kayleb Williams and Shaudor Sanders.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
I love that. I love that. The it's the this
is I think you nailed it. And I've experienced some
of this where the annoying AAU parent has now become
the professor, the professional sports parent. They've now matriculated into

(21:30):
being professional sports parent. And yeah, that that part to me,
I don't love. I don't love. And it has backfired.
And look, even though Kayleb Williams is now, he's in Chicago,
he had a year under his belt. He didn't have
a great year. They've reformulated everything around him. Whatever. That article,

(21:51):
the seth wick Er sham article, is going to do
massive damage to Kayleb Williams. Massive There is no putting
that genie back in the bottle. He has to play
for the Bears unless they want to get rid of
him for the next I think it's basically six years
right with no real negotiating power. So if he's any good,

(22:11):
he ain't going anywhere, and he didn't want to be there.
He wanted to avoid it. And again you can say
with good reason. You know, they they fired their head coach,
they changed everything, blah blah blah blah blah. The point
is there's no putting that genie back in the bottle.
And that's where parents don't see the bigger picture. They
don't understand that everybody talks I'm with you, but.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Else that's it.

Speaker 7 (22:35):
So that prediction segments and mad dog rant.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Uh I would do hmmm, I think the annoying parents
because again they've all annoyed US at U sports, high
school sports, collegiate sports, and now professional sports.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Why are we doing this because we can?

Speaker 7 (23:16):
Doug I had an interesting exchange with Iowa Sam before
this podcast today. He's like, who's Brendan Jennings. I don't
know Brendan Jennings, And I think that kind of proves
the point here for those that don't know Brandon Jennings,
he was like one of those guys that tried to
circumvent the college system. There's a rule that you had
to be in college for one year. He went to
I think he went to Europe and played. He was

(23:37):
a lottery pick in the NBA that never panned out.
He was very highly regarded out of high school and
is now his brand is picking fights with ex NBA
players on podcasts and dropping a lot of f bombs
New York.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Because they never scare me.

Speaker 4 (23:54):
All you gotta do is fucking build bricks and homes
up there on that goddamn.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Realm tells them go one You like that one?

Speaker 6 (24:02):
No, I'm just saying, I'm just all the handles in
the world, but I can't shoot for sit you.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
I ain't got one. I ain't got one guard.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
In New York right now that plays street ball that's
better than Frank Nitty street ball? Who brea in New
York right now?

Speaker 3 (24:14):
That can fuck with Frank Nickys?

Speaker 2 (24:15):
Clip this?

Speaker 4 (24:15):
Anybody in New York want to play Frank Nitty at
Brandon Jenner's one on one?

Speaker 2 (24:23):
Is that what we're doing now? We're talking about street ballers?
And he did go kind of classic, Uh, he did
go kind of classic old school New York point guards
can't shoot sort of thing, which is a very old stereotype.
Why do we play it for you because we can't.
All Right, that's it for the In the Modus podcast.
