Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, listen, this is the Doug gottli Show Years
in the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Who what it's Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I yeah,

(00:31):
I was watching Bill Belichick on GMA today and we'll
talk about this a little bit here later on in
the pod. But I just I find the entire thing
super interesting in that there's many parts of it. I

(00:51):
don't understand how you ad dat as twenty four year
old if you're in your seventies. I'm in my forties.
I don't want a date a twenty four year old.
I just I don't have that. There's never been a
twenty four year old. And I'm not disrespecting twenty fo
year olds because you probably feel the same way. You're like, yeah,
i'd like to I'd like to have deep intimate conversations

(01:12):
about my life and and like, you know, if you're
gonna be with a woman, she's gonna share her feelings,
you're gonna share yours. Like there's just no references, Like, sorry,
if you don't know what an afterschool special is, I'm
probably not the guy for you. None of my jokes
would work. They just don't. And oh, yeah, by the way,
once you're for him younger then younger than your kids,

(01:35):
it just looks creepy. But the number one thing that's
just interesting to me is that Bill Belichick was a huge,
do your job, no distractions sort of guy. And again
we'll talk about this later on the pod, but I
don't think anyone could anyone could deny that even if

(01:56):
Jordan is handling all his things and she's like his
his hammer to close deals, to make sure people are
doing the right things, you know, to be his personal assistant,
to be his personal attest shay, like all of that
has is tremendously valuable, don't get me wrong. Like I've
had an assistant and I'm actually hiring a personal assistant,

(02:20):
and basically they're they're gonna work ahead of me, you know, like, hey,
I got this, you tell me what's next, You tell
what's next, you tell what's next. It's great, I've done
that before. It's unbelievable. But now to have an actual
romantic relationship with somebody who's twenty four and is working
as I don't even know what you want, you're his
creative muse. The fact that any interview you have, whether

(02:44):
they're allowed to or not allowed to, people want to
ask about it, that by definition is a distraction from
what they're trying to do at North Carolina, which is
when football games. Now, can you say, hey, it brings
positive attention because you know, coach Bellatieck dating somebody young.
It shows he's got a young heart, he's got great energy,
he's doing yoga, coaching new things just like football, and

(03:09):
college football is a new thing to him. Great, you
can spin it however you want. But when no one
I know cares or knows or wants to know who
the quarterback is there with killing of football, but they
do want to know about the coach's girlfriend, that by
definition is a distraction from the main thing. And wasn't

(03:29):
Bill belichecking out distractions? Do your job sort of guy? Well,
that's only when he was really successful with the Patriots.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekday. He's at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
App Let's get to the Fox as and now say
every day at this time in the Bonus Podcast and
The Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio here's Brady Quinn,
two pros and a cup of Joe on Williams story.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I gotta be honest, like, I'm not sure that I'm
overly bothered by it. For this reason, I never hate
the fact when players or even their families try to
push the envelope of what's possible to give themselves the
best opportunity possible.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
All Right.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I know people made comments about you know, Prime and
Shador Sanders and what they were maybe trying to do
this year in the draft, which I think they're two
you know, different in regards to the talent of both players.
But in Caleb Williams, you know aspect like he kind
of sought out everything you possibly could, you know, seek out.

(04:39):
At that point, he looked at going to the UFL,
which would have been pretty crazy to think about. However,
we've seen quarterbacks in the past do that. Granted it
would be decades ago. You know, they talked about the
rookie wage scale. There's a lot of people who've got
the issues with it. We've talked about this before. Fundamentally,
a team can basically draft a player and have plea

(05:00):
control of them for seven years of their career, seven
years without the player's input. Outside of having to sign
a franchise tag a four year deal plus a fifth
year option. In two tags, that's seven years. You could
be damn near thirty and never having the chance to
really test free agent waters.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Look, I get the point, but the idea here is that, like,
you don't like the Bears history of developing quarterbacks, so
instead you're going to go to the UFL. And his
idea of going to the Minnesota Vikings again, knowing that

(05:44):
the Bears had the number one pick and their arrival,
it just lands poorly. It just lands poorly. And like, look,
if we're going to be honest, and I consider Brady
a friend, right now he might hear this, well, that's
not something a friend would say. But Brady has his delivery.

(06:05):
His demeanor, how he was as a quarterback is the same.
He is super super confident, super confident, and it lands
to some people like he's arrogant. And Caleb Williams has
a similar type of confidence that lands people like its arrogance,

(06:26):
and really it lands with the idea of being entitled.
You know, being entitled, it doesn't mean you can't push
the envelope. At this time, he wanted to be drafted
by Washington because he's from Washington, not even taking away
from the fact that there's a pretty good chance that
the Washington commanders didn't want to draft him, they'd like
Dayden Daniels better. But the lack of gratefulness and respect

(06:52):
for why things are how they are. It's like, yeah,
can you be franchise tagged two different times? And then
the third time of transition to take sure do you
know what that looks like for a quarterback? That looks
like two hundred million dollars guaranteed for three years roughly
roughly right, because you've got to be the top five
of quarterbacks that's in the you know fifty, it'll be

(07:12):
in the by by then, it'll be in the sixty
million dollar variety. And then the transition tags be like
seventy five. Like, again, my math might be bad, but
sixty sixty five seventy five that's very close to two
hundred million dollars. So here here's the point. Crime me
a fucking river. Okay, crime me a river. You're already

(07:37):
and again, quarterbacks are already entitled class. They you can't
hit them above above the shoulders, you can't hit them
from the knees are below. You can't do this, you
can't do that. And so when you come in and
especially remember Katl Williams, who is a very talented player,
but he had a disappointing third season in college football.

(08:00):
He had a reputation of being a little bit different.
And then you have your dad saying things that just
sound like an au dad and you give off the
air of entitlement. It turns a lot of people off. Now, look,
the converse to it is you're not going to make
it as a quarterback, frankly as a broadcaster if you're

(08:23):
not confident in yourself. And that's why Brady has been
a success in high school at Notre Dame and whatever
you want to think of his NFL career, he was
a starting quarterback in the NFL. Were you I sure
as I wasn't. And he's been a success as a broadcaster.
So it's hard to say, hey, the thing that makes
you is the thing that can turn some people off.
But there's a fine line there, and Catleb Williams has

(08:45):
turned a lot of people off. And this is some
confirmation biased to it. Here's Colin Cowhert talking about the
WNBA and Caitlin Clark.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
In the weird insular WNBA. This has been a real
struggle the truth. They have this gait keeping mentality. We'll
tell you who's great, Colin. I was watching the WNBA
long before Caitlin Clark. Well, yeah, it's not my problem.

(09:15):
Your social life was boring. I'm not gonna apologize for
watching it when it got really interesting. And I've said
this about Steph Curry. I love Draymond Green and Jimmy
Butler and pods, but if you take Steph Curry out
of the Warriors, they're kind of boring. And if you
take Caitlin Clark out of the WNBA and her team,
it's not the same. She's packing now larger arenas. She's

(09:40):
taking and making shots nobody's ever done in the history
of the sport. She is Steph Curry. The WNBA flew
commercial flights before she played a game. They went to
privatize flights. Okay, that's Caitlin Clark, only Caitlin Clark, So
just promote it, market it ride the best wave this

(10:04):
league has ever had. You get these unique unicorns.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
That's what she is.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
And once she went to an anonymous poll, the gms
are like, Yep, that's who you'd start the franchises with.
That's the best point guard, that's the best shooting guard.
That's the best thing we have. It's been obvious for
everybody except a big chunk of w NBA players.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
I I don't know what brought brought him to to
want to say this, to want to go there. If
there was some new story, news report. The corporate America
is trying to tell us that the WNBA is something
that I don't believe it is right putting w NBA
stars on commercials during NBA games, Like, I don't know
who these people are, and it definitely is not going

(10:55):
to make me want to buy the product more.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
But he's referring to the there's an anonymous of all
thirteen gms. I didn't realize they only had thirteen teams,
which makes them less likely that I'll ever take them serious.
All thirteen gms pulled anonymously and Caitlin Clark came out
top of the list on most of their questions.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
What top of their list on what? What?

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Colin just sat building a team around.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
You'd most want to build a team around.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Best point guard, best shooting guard?

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Yeah, Well, of course, I mean, the number one thing
you're looking for in a sport is how do we
get people there? Right? I mean back when the Oakland
A's owner in the nineteen seventies, right, they actually brought
an elephant out to the park. They would do anything
like you just want to get people there. And oh, yeah,
by the way, she's really good and she's getting better
and she plays a style that I tell my people

(11:49):
want to watch. But it seems like teammates want to
play with So yeah, we've been telling people for a
year to get in line, and it feels like most
of them outside of Angel Brees are Here's Dan Patrick
and Jason Kidd talking about Luka doncik.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
When's the last time you spoke to Luca?

Speaker 6 (12:07):
I text him on that morning. Uh, and that's the
last time I've talked to him.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
How did he respond to your text?

Speaker 6 (12:15):
I don't think he was too happy, And just again
from the experience of being traded, you know, maybe being surprised,
you know, upset, feelings are high. But again, I loved
the opportunity of coaching Luca. He's an incredible person and
we all know his talent is one of the best
in the world and so you know, again, my mindset

(12:37):
is to deal with the cars that I'm dealt and
UH and keep pushing forward. And I've always said this
publicly and privately. I wish Luca the best. He's one
of the best players in the world.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
I thought you were going to say that you meet
with Nico in his hotel room, he tells you he's
trading Luca, and then you go back to your hotel
room and cry.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
But but but that didn't happen, right.

Speaker 6 (12:58):
I didn't cry. I would is more or less trying
to figure out how we're going to make this thing work.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
So what it tells you is and he's clearly tried
to separate himself from the decision as it was in
his decision that said, it is interesting. I've often believed this,
and I do this with my players. Now. If we
don't have if we're if I'm not coaching you and
we're not texting each other, then we didn't have a
real relationship anyway, That's what the Fox said say.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Let's find out who are what is annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Hey, Doug, just to pick up on what Colin Cowherd said,
he said it so articulately. I'm jealous. But they only
have thirteen teams in the WNBA And why is it thirteen?
Why is it an odd number? How can we take
you serious? The CFL, I think, has like eight teams,
Like it's a minor league. So Kathy Engelbert is the

(14:16):
commissioner of that league. The league the season starts tonight,
oh does it? And she has to do the vocal
gymnastics of promoting Kaitlin Clark but not offending the other
players in the league. And listen to how she does it.
This was on some podcasts somewhere.

Speaker 7 (14:37):
It is a balance, But she's a generational talent. No
league is ever about one player, but in this case,
Caitlin brought tens of millions of new viewers into the
w and there's no denying that impact, not just in
the WNBA, but the.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
World of sports.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
Adam and I took all the time about Yeah, she's
the most popular I think in America. But again, you
do want to balance it because obviously it's aw what
happened with Juju wacked in's you know, getting hurt. You
want to balance making sure that you're all so promoting
your other stars like an Asia Wilson. Yeah, like a
Brianna Stewart and a Fisa Collier. That's why this year
sustaining gain, sustained the momentum we had last year and

(15:09):
gain even new new viewers.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
There's like a qualifying language. She used the word balance
four times. They she just can't outwardly state that we
are dealing with a phenomenon here and we are going
to take advantage of it. She just can't say that
she has to throw in balance and the other players
and because you need balance and the balance.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Yeah, Like I do want to be I'd love to
be a commissioner at some point in my life, but
I don't know if that's what I'd want to be
a commissioner of. But part of being a commissioner is
you always have to have that. It's like being a coach.
You always have to have that mental gymnastics of being
grateful and thankful for all these things and never taking

(15:54):
credit for yourself. But I like the fact that I
like the fact that she admitted you have a generational
talent that she's packing Arena's. I think we could have
an argument whether or not she's the most popular player
in a popular athlete in the country, let alone in
the world. That would be a debate I don't really

(16:17):
want to have because there's the answers people won't like.
But regardless of which, at least we're getting somewhere, at
least we're there's more admittance to what she has done
to the popularity of the sport, and there is a
higher percentage of WNBA people who are getting on board
with it.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
So Bill Belichick was on with Good Morning America Today.
Michael Strahan did the interview. They started talking about unc
and it was going fine, and then it reached a
point where Jordan Hudson's role in Bill's life came up.

Speaker 8 (16:52):
What did Jordan mean to you?

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Well, we have good personal relationship.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
You know, I'm not talking about personal relationships, Michael even
know that.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I know that code.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
I'm saying, are you happy?

Speaker 8 (17:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Can you look happy?

Speaker 4 (17:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (17:04):
I never thought I thought i'd seen you doing yoga.
Yoga only happy people do yoga. Well, I know a
lot's been made about all of this, and I just
hope that the focus gets back on you and your
If you're happy.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
We're all happy for you.

Speaker 8 (17:20):
Not for sure, Mike, and I wish you well at
you and c good luck you're coaching.

Speaker 4 (17:25):
So Straighthand the annoying part about this exchange is that
straight hand, I know he wants to be the kind
of hard pressing journalist when he gets these interviews, but
he like he was told obviously before the interview they're
not going to take any Jordan questions. He throws something
in there and then he just starts laughing and couching
it and stuff, and it's like the only thing anyone

(17:46):
wants to know. And good morning America. If you're doing
an interview with Bill Belichick, the public wants to know
the nature of their relationship because it is not a
business relationship. It's not a publicist relationship. He's having sex
with the person that is in charge of a lot
of his business decisions, and his family keeps coming out

(18:09):
and saying that they're concerned. You probably want to ask
Bill Belichick about that or say no to the interview.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
That's the that's the big thing. Okay, here's a question.
If Bill Belichick or North Carolina says, hey, coach Belichick
would like to come on, but you can't ask any
questions about Jordan.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Do you take the interview on this show?

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (18:32):
No?

Speaker 2 (18:32):
No, yeah, no, no, I'm asked to your question. Do
you take the interview?

Speaker 4 (18:35):
It depends if I'm ABC News.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Let's just start with our show.

Speaker 4 (18:40):
No, I'd rather not do it, but I have a
much better time justifying it on our show.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
What do you think? What do you think Scott Shpiro
would say, our boss.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
I'm guessing he'd be like, just do the interview.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Yeah, it's a hard one.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
But we're not news. We don't. We don't make ourselves
out to be.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Also, Good Morning America. There. You know, Michael Strahan is
not a journalist. Do you think of Michael Strahan as
a journalist.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
I don't, but I think that he wants to be
seen that way.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Sure, But it's also GMA, right, they interview lots of people.
There's lots of fluff interviews there, you know, Like, do
you think when they have bieber on at some point
or his next album, they'll go what really went on
with the freak Offs? When you were Diddy.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
Do you think they'll ask that they should again.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Whether they should and whether they will because here's the problem,
and you brought up you basically brought front and center
and we talked about this littlebon radio and it's a
great form to talk about it, which is this is
the challenge in media, okay, because everybody has an outlet,
and it's not just producers. Talent feels this as well,

(19:52):
where you're like, okay, we do what interview? I'd love
oh my Belichick? Yes, but can I I can't ask
about that? Can I ask about Robert Kraft? I can't
ask about Robert Craft? And so you either don't get
Bill Belichick and you can't really publicize well we could
have had Bill Belichick, but we couldn't talk about these things.

(20:13):
Or you get Bill Belichick and you're grin and Barrett
and you do it. Or you get Bill Belichick and
you try and you know, sneak a question in there
and it can end up in a dumpster fire. It's
a really hard one. And I know that you're sitting
at home going like, ah, eh, this is and and listen,

(20:34):
Donald trumpet does this as president the United States. He
won't answer questions from people who ask him hard questions.
He just refuses to do so. And then anything he
does that he says they're fake news, cutting out the
cutting out the credibility of somebody who's trying to do
the right thing. Look, I had one. Bob Davey is

(20:56):
the former head coach at Notre Dame and when the
scissor lift collapsed and the kid tragically died at Notre Dame,
Bob Davy at the time was working for ESPN ABC,
and I had him on. I was supposed to have
him on. He's like, yeah, he doesn't want to talk
about that Notre Dame thing. I was like, well, he
coached at Notre Dame and he works at ESPN, So

(21:18):
if he thinks I can do an interview with Bob
Davey and not ask him about anything about Notre Dame
and how they handled all this, then he doesn't understand
the job. He eventually did it. I was respectful with
how I asked the questions. I didn't. I didn't labor
on it. I I did the famous Jim Mora interview
as we discussed. You know, since then we've we've made up.

(21:42):
But all I asked him, you know, does he think
he'd still be coaching the Atlanta Falcons had Mike Vick
not gotten in trouble. Thought that was a fair question.
But because he was on, he was on to promote
an interview with Mike Vick, so I want to ask
him all things Mike Vick and he wasn't playing ball

(22:03):
now since Jim was now the head coach at Yukon,
we become really good friends. He's like, look, Doud, just
having a bad day. I didn't they had booked me
with Colin that it was you. Nobody told me it
was super weird. And then you know, you asked me
questions and I didn't know how I was supposed to answer,
and he like, he apologized, you made up, you know.
And obviously when you're a guest host at the time,

(22:24):
sometimes you got this easier way into easy way into
that level of questions, especially when they don't know who
you are at the time. But the point is that
this is a real issue now in television. It's like,
if you don't do that interview, it's gonna end up
on TikTok, It's getting end up on Instagram, it's gonna
end up on somebody's podcast. On Club Shay Shay, Right,
why do people go on Club Shasha Because he doesn't

(22:45):
ask questions. He does a little bit of research, he
has it on a card. He asked the questions, and
then he'll see is he doesn't know the reference a
lot of the references that people are talking about, so
he can't follow up. So it just becomes a platform
where you can spew bullshit or maybe tell way too
harsh a truth without any sort of follow up. So

(23:06):
I'm with you. I do think Straighthand doesn't look the
better because of it. They're reasonable questions to ask. Se
the only reason anybody gives a shit about Bill Belichick
coaching at North Carolina right now. But if you don't
do an interview in the way he wants to do
an interview, somebody else is gonna get it, or they'll
just release it out online and then nobody gets.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
So that conundrum that you just described. And Kathy Engelbert
doing vocal gymnastics to talk about Caitlin.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Cork, I think the Kathy Engelbert doing the vocal gymnastics,
I think that's the most I.

Speaker 1 (23:41):
Why are we doing this?

Speaker 4 (23:45):
Because we can Sometimes you just can't find anything that's great.
But Anthony Edwards was walking in on the media session
of Connelly and what's another two?

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Well that's good, Oh, yes us Mike Conley. Who was it?
I don't remember who it was.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
It was the transition time between there and and Anthony
Edwards said a bad word. Dan say, if you want
to go, I appreciate you all.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
I don't need no seat, man, thank you, I'll stand up.
That'll be good.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
Come home, let go berksing hell here man, I'm out.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
That was good. I mean again, I do like Anthony Edwards.
Do I think that there's times just a little bit much. Sure,
but you can't argue with the results. And it's okay
to have fun playing basketball. That's it for the Inner
