Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug gottli.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What a Doug Gottlieb Show in the Bonus Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
You know, we're going to talk about a bunch of
different layers, and we did on radio the bunch of
different layers to the Kayln Clark.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Angel Reese thing. But I thought of this today and.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I just really respect and appreciate the marketing brilliance of what.
I'm gonna just give credit to the Indiana team, the
Fever on what they're able to build. Okay, And you're like, well,
what do you mean? Okay, let me kind of give
you a little bit of an example here. So the

(01:01):
Indiana Fever two years ago were the worst team in
the WNBA by and by a substantial amount. Right, So
what did they do last year? They added Caitlin Clark.
She was amazing. They you know, you got a Leah
Boston Caitlyn Clark, and then they completely revamped the roster,

(01:22):
completely revamped the roster, and.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
They have a little bit of everything.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Right, you have Caitlyn Clark, who I loved her response
after the game, She's like, it's a take foul. It's
not that big a deal. She just year two for her,
she's been public facing so much. She definitely feels like
she's kind of matured as a player and with handling
all of this fame right, Like, there's no freak out,

(01:48):
there's no she's just maybe even a little bit too
matter of fact, like, let's make it so she's still
fun for her. But then one of the two they
have there's there's two of them that are like basically models, right,
and they could play. I think it's Lexi Hull and
what's the other Lexi Hull and Sophie Cunningham, right, And

(02:10):
so you have, like you got a couple of tremendous players,
you got some worker bees, you have the sizzle to
Caitlyn Clark, you got the actual sex appeal in the WNBA,
which we never had previously. Stephanie White's the coach down right,
she was a star at Purdue. Like she seems a

(02:30):
lot more comfortable dealing with with Caitlyn Clark than the
previous coach did. Like the whole thing. And it's a show,
and it's kind of like a Broadway show that's doing
really really well. I don't know, I just I feel
like they nailed all elements to it, right, Like you
built up a really good team, you built up a
good roster. It makes sense. Caitlyn's gotten better, Caitlyn's got

(02:52):
more mature. It looks like a finally runned like production event.
And then you bring in a little bit to sizzle
in terms of, you know, beautiful women, but in a
it's not like the WWE where they're softcore porn stars.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Right.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I don't know, just the whole thing seems to work
from a marketing perspective. And I know we just say, hey,
people watch because of Kaitlyn Clark. But they'll stay because
these other elements. They'll stay because the team is good.
They stay because they look better coach. They'll stay because
some guys will stay because you've got beautiful women out there,
which no one ever did before with the WNBA. And

(03:32):
this is just me tipping the cap to saying, as
a marketing major graduated the Spear School of Business at
Oklahoma State University, I respected a great deal.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb

App Let's let's get to the Fox Says and now.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Every day at this time in the Bonus podcast Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio, we play for your previous
portion of Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports One Show.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Here's Dan Byer Mike Harmon.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
They had this exchange about Caitlin Clark's player fowl on
Angel Reese.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
I don't think there was as much contact as the
way that body went flying. It was like a WWE flip.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
I don't know if it was a flop, but I
will say this, I am with you in terms of
I felt Angel Reese has been waiting for that to happen.
It's like the person who wants someone to throw the
first punch so then they have the opportunity to go
after them and say what they wanted to say, or
say do what they want to do, say what they

(04:40):
want to say to that person in that spot. And
I know that Angel Reese knew that it was Caitlin
Clark who committed that foul, and well, I didn't think
it was flagrant in that situation. If you've played basketball before,
you know what you have to do. I think that
Angel Reese wanted Caitlin Clark to do that. Said she's

(05:00):
wanted not maybe not even four a year, and maybe
it's been two years or three years, however long she
has wanted Caitlin Clark to do something that would give
Angel Reese the ability to say what you've always wanted
to say, keep it in your back pocket. We've all
had relationships like that that are tenuous, and you know
you want to say something and you're waiting for the

(05:21):
person just at whatever point to finally say it so
you can unleash it. And that's what I think happened
with Angel Reese yesterday.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
I have to tell you it is.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
I know it's a story and we talked about in
the radio show and we need to talk about it here,
but I don't actually think it should be. I kind
of think that's the game that Angel Reese is sort
of playing, and it's I've just I don't care, right, Like,
you don't have to explain to me who Angel Reese
is as a player. Like, yeah, you have the people

(05:57):
who don't like her, and they'll they'll put her misses
together and how she gets her rebounds, but like, let's
not diminish her as a player. She's very good in
her role. Right, Her role is that, you know, she's
sort of a bit of a Draymond Green right where
she can you know, she guards, she can rebound, she
can make plays, she can I guess help you win.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
But you know that's a different role than the one
of one of the best players in the league, which
is which is Caitlyn Clark. The negative energy obviously comes
from jealousy, the like the claims that there are racist chants,
like the likelihood of that happening at that event in

(06:41):
that venue is so minis school. It's really it's it's
like troubling to even echo, but you do feel like
you have to echo it.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
I just she just she's just annoying to me.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
I didn't care about women's basketball until Caitlyn Clark came along.
Caitlyn Clark continues to sure as a player and as
a woman. And Angel Reese is a sideshow act. She's
a caricature of what she's seen NBA players do to
be successful. And I know this is what the Fox said,
but she's actually really really annoying. Here's Colin Cowherd talking

(07:17):
about brock Perty's new contract.

Speaker 6 (07:19):
I think brock Perty tends to be closer in talent
to a Baker Mayfield thirty five million a year than
Josh Allen fifty five million a year. And I'm not
saying Brock is the only quarterback I think's overpaid. It
does appear that Trevor Lawrence is overpaid. I said it
at the time. I think Dak Prescott and Tua I

(07:41):
didn't like those contracts. I was right on both. But
you know, the critics say, well, Justin Herbert hasn't won
a playoff game either, But I think most people in
the league know he can deal. So here's what the
contract tells me. It tells me that Kyle Shanahan has
all the power. And Kyle Shanahan's looking at that track
and he's looking at a guy who's smart, coachable, moves. Well,

(08:04):
they don't play in crappy weather where Brock Purty's not
been the same guy as he has been in more
temperate weather. And he's good with it. But we all
know the more you pay to it and Dak, the
less they have around him. To his old line would
be a lot better if he made thirty five million
a year, and Dak would have more weapons if he
made thirty five to forty million dollars a.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Year, Colin and I, you know, we don't agree on everything.
Here's when we do agree on and I think most
people do. And just there's that fine line between how
do I make brock Purty feel like he's our franchise
quarterback and how do I not overpay brock Purty. And
they probably leaned on the side of overpaying knowing that
everybody's contract's going to be going up, everybody, right, every

(08:49):
every everybody's gonna be contracts going to be going up,
and there's this so it's like what it looks like
now it's supposed to I guess what I'm and Jason,
you're the perfect one. And it's like the creativity of
the Dodgers to what they've done with sho Heyo Tani's contract. Again,

(09:09):
I know there's different cbas in different rules. I'm not
disputing into that. What I'm saying is it's a creative
way of doing a contract. And I think that's probably
the disappointing thing for the Niners, which is or is
like you're gonna do a traditional deal at it it's
a notch below the very top of the league, which

(09:31):
is reasonable, right, But I agree with what Colin says
where he's part of an ensemble cast, he's a really
important part. But a good part of the sale of
brock pretty was he wasn't making bub kiss previously so
they could pay everybody else. So how can he make
more while still allowing for there to be more money?
I don't know about the actual contractual details, how many

(09:53):
times it can we do it, how much other cash
is on hand, But once this puppy becomes live.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Yeah, it'll be prohibitive. It just is. And I'm with Colin.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
I don't think he's good enough to do it, not
necessarily on his own, but without star talent all around him.
Maybe he has, maybe he's grown into that, but I
haven't seen it, especially over the past two years late
in the season. So this is one where I'm on
team Colin. We've said it all along. He's a really,

(10:23):
really good quarterback. But the lack of creativity of hey,
we're paying him this now, and we're gonna have different
escalators and incentives and ways in which we can keep
more money on hand or keep more cap liquidity in hand,
I think it's sadly missing. Here's LaVar Arrington talk about

(10:45):
the Nuggets Aaron Gordon talk about the quick games, you know,
causing injuries.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
Of course it would have made a difference. I mean,
when you get more rest, it makes a difference. But
I think the essence of competition, especially the playoffs, to me,
is considered to be a tournament. That's a tournament, right,
And when you play in a tournament, I mean, before
you're in the pros making millions and millions of dollars,
what are you doing? You're playing not only one game

(11:12):
in a day, You're playing multiple games in a day.
If you're playing.

Speaker 7 (11:18):
High level elite travel basketball on these these these travel
teams you're playing sometimes you're playing two games, maybe even
three games a day, maybe three, but more often than
not you're probably playing two games. So the idea of
it is is that if based upon what sport you choose,

(11:40):
you have to understand the level of frequency and how
many games are being played. If you want it more
rest time, and then you want it more time in
between games than Aaron Gordon, maybe you should have chose
a different sport.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Yeah, I mean, do I think Aaron Gordon is right?
I mean, where where the where the Nuggets think the
series was lost. Is between Games three and Games four
when they had a close quick turnaround, right, And again
I get at LeVar the multi games in a day
in AAU.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Completely different thing.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
But where this YERI where the Nuggets believe the series
was lost and they did not have they have no bench,
they have five and a half guys. Was game four
when they lost on a quick turnaround. If they win
that game, obviously it's a completely different series. And maybe
they win in six, that's what he's talking about. And then,

(12:35):
of course then he pulled his hamstring in Game six
and he wasn't right for Game seven. I do like
the extra time in between. I thought that the NBA,
and I get I guess it's about TV and why
you do it. If you do it on a Sunday afternoon,
that's fine. You gotta play on a Friday night. If
you're gonna play in a Sunday afternoon, you know, well,

(12:58):
actually that's what they did. They did. You gotta do
Thursday night and then Sunday afternoon. You can't do less
than two full day turnaround. I don't think I just
too quick. Too quick, we do that actually in our league.
And that second game if you don't have great depth.
It's a killer. And Oklahoma City's a deeper team, deeper

(13:22):
team traditionally deeper teams. That doesn't mean they win the playoffs.
That's what the Fox said.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Find out who are What's annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
And now it's your annoying?

Speaker 8 (13:51):
Hey, Doug, If you paid attention to political discussions like
I do, you know that there's one side of the
political spectrum accusing of former firstly Joe Biden of elder abuse.
Given all the details of what happened over the last
three or four years, I think the Angels could be
charged without abuse. Saturday night, something very disturbing happened. Millions,

(14:14):
including myself, millions of Dodger fans were waiting for Quyon
kursh How to come back. He came back to a
standing ovation and the Angels started kicking his ass immediately.
They didn't even give him an inning to celebrate walk
walk double single double, and they were hit hard, hard
balls like what they have zero compassion. The Angels aren't

(14:37):
going anywhere, They're not going to win anything. Why not
give the old guy at least one inning?

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Though you're funny your I mean you don't want them
to try and win a game.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
I mean I don't understand processes and why you play
who you play. But I would think the counter to
that is you're trying to win any game you possibly can,
or get somebody some work you think that can.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
Help you in the end.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
But your negativity towards my Angels is well founded, well founded,
and I feel your pain.

Speaker 8 (15:16):
So something happened over the weekend. Angel Rees and Caitlin
Clark had that incident that was upgraded to a flagrant
foul talked about on the radio show you just responded to.
Did Dan Buyer's take? This is what I find annoying
about it. Chicago Sky sent out their own and I

(15:36):
guess what would you say? A statement We'll do everything
in our power to protect Chicago Sky players. We encourage
the league to continue taking meaningful steps towards creating a
safe environment. This comes on the details of the WNBA
releasing the statement that says we strongly condemn racism, hate,

(15:58):
and discrimination in all forms. There's this weird thing that
happened in the middle of last season where players started
complaining to the commissioner and whatnot that the league was
not doing enough to protect them against hate online and
in person. This sounds like the Sky and WNBA are
just going through the motions to show that they care.

(16:21):
What disturbs me most about just anything woke is that
it's based in dishonesty. It's disingenuine. I don't think there's
anything to investigate here. Do you really think that there
were someone in the crowd who dropped like an N
word or did some kind of racist gesture and a
crowd full of people when there are players in here

(16:42):
in hearing distance that are black of their own team,
do we really think that something happened on Saturday, Doug.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
I I think it's very, very, very far fetched. You know,
one of my actually the commissioner of our league, who
she lives in Indianapolis or the Horizon League is based
in Indianapolis. She has four, I think maybe even court
side seats, and she said the prices have gone up

(17:16):
with like tripled since last year and it's a sellout
every game. Is a sellout, and she's like the demo
of the fans is really amazing. It's a family, family atmosphere.
Like again, here's what doesn't make sense. The Fever obviously
have I think half of their team is black women, right,

(17:37):
so if you're going to if there were gonna be
cat calls or racist calls, like it would affect the
Fever just like it would affect the sky. Additionally, like
you're talking about the most I guess liberal, I don't know,
if I don't know, if he probably woke fan base

(17:58):
in all of professional sports is WNBA basketball, So any
of that chatter like, that's not the type of environment. Again,
I've never been to a place where something like that
has yelled out, but no doubt it probably has historically.
But it's not like you got a bunch of frat boys,
a bunch of people drinking that somebody's joking around and

(18:20):
would say that and somebody like, come on, do you
knock it off? Whereas there it would be a major,
major thing if someone did it. Is that reasonable, Jason,
That's what I'm saying, right it be It would be
a huge deal if somebody got caught doing that at
a WNBA game. So no, I don't believe it. I'm sorry,

(18:40):
I just don't, you know, I just I don't. I
don't think that's in any way possible because people who
were there would have been appalled, they would have called
out whoever did it, and they they would have been
escorted out.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
There's no question in my mind.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
So yes, it's annoying that it feels like that's the
knee jerk of somebody doesn't act the way they're supposed
to act, and that's what they do.

Speaker 8 (19:00):
And the WNBA is just going through the motions to
prove that they care, not necessarily because they want to
get to the bottom of this because nothing happened, so
they angels for elder abuse or the WNBA's sham investigation.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
I think the WNBA sham investigation, or the fact that
they have to have a sham investigation, the fact that
we have to give this life and talk about it
as annoy.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
Why are we doing this because we can?

Speaker 8 (19:32):
Hey, Doug, sex workers were in the news sex workers
and Sports and FS. One personality says that prostitution should
be legalized and I'll let people find out why she
thinks that, and then aj Brown was speaking to like
teenagers or college students, and he talked about porn. So

(19:54):
this is interesting.

Speaker 9 (19:55):
These guys there's an elite getting in trouble with women.
They got fitters with women doing doing little stuff. Because
when you got that all that type of money, dog
like boll, that stuff shows up because now it's set
your leisure. Now you can give anyone you want, You
can pick and choose. You see what I'm saying. So
it ain't all pieces and crean because like as me
and I truly feel like as me and bro, we
need to sit down and we need to talk more
about like it's a real time it's a real time porn, right,

(20:18):
and it's going to a whole other level because for
what porn does to your brain, it just sensitizes your
brain and so you think you may think, like man,
she look good or whatever. Now you're looking at it
as an object, not as as a human being. You
see what I'm saying. But I see that shit all
the time.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
For my team.

Speaker 9 (20:31):
From my team, my teammates talk about talk about stuff
like from other players and all these other stuff.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
But that's real dog.

Speaker 9 (20:36):
So like just because you got all these blessing, all
these money, and all this shit like that shit, bro,
everything ain't Peters and Crean. Because whatever problem that you
may have deep down inside that you're not telling nobody about,
get some bread, get some money, get whatever, you get
whatever you desire. I promise you that shit gonna show
up and you and you're not gonna be able.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
To hide it.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah. I mean I actually agree with him in terms
of porn. But there's just a lot there to play
for you because we can. That's it for the end
the Most Podcast. Check out the radio show every day
three to five Eastern, twel two Pacific, Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio app.
