Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
What Doug Gottlieb showing the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app. Welcome,
Welcome in. So the big news of the day is
Travis Kelcey and Taylor Shift are engaged. That's gotta be
a hard one, right, Like do you really do two
months salary of that bad boy or you just I mean,
(00:31):
she's a billionaire. What do you do? And then what
do you get them for weddings? For their wedding. I
have a wedding, couple of weddings I'm attending here in September,
and yeah it's different. It's like next week, next week,
I have Sage Steals getting getting getting married. Uh Saves
(00:53):
your dear friends. She invited me, and but Sage is deal.
It's a black Taigh wedding. So I got to get
a tucks rent or buy and then you know, I
gotta fly there. I canna stay hotel Like I'm kind
of in sort of deep financially for it. So I
guess the question, Jaysu is like what do you get?
What do you get rich people? And obviously they're you know,
(01:17):
Travis Kelcey and Taylor Shift are exceedingly rich. Yeah, I
don't even know what you do there. It's not like
you can go and go to the registries like, oh,
barbecue mits cool, Like I'll get him some potholes.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
It's like it seems like the thoughtful gesture nowadays is
to get them an experience, you know. So it's like,
I don't know what. I don't know what you do
for those two, but like I can only draw from
my experience, and I got Ryan bersching Er a hundred
bucks so that he and his new wife could spend,
you know, do something on their honeymoon. You can on
the register, you give him one hundred dollars to spend
(01:52):
on their honeymoon. Maybe dinner on me one night after
he gets done it out back, you can be like
that was on Jay stew That's what you get for
Travis and Taylor. And by the way, for half the
people that are listening to this podcast who just heard
what wedding you're going to let me just let me
just say what they're thinking out out loud, and then
you can choose to answer or not. Is a red
(02:15):
Maga hat required at the Sage Steel wedding.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
No, I don't know. I wasn't told that. No, I
mean Sage and I've been friends. Well, we used to live,
we were neighbors. We live, there's a house in between us.
Our daughters are my twins and her youngest are a
day apart when they're born. So I've no one saying forever. No,
I don't think there will be any political discussion, and
(02:44):
no Ah maga hat is not required. But I do
think you know you're getting there getting married. I won't
so wear but in the South, and I was like,
why are they getting married on a Friday? And then
I was like, oh, September sports people don't get married
on a Saturday Sunday. It's very, very solid, solid effort
(03:04):
out of them. I think that's what it is. Probably
less expensive too, right now, like you're paying for it,
your folks aren't paying for it, So that's probably a
little bit of it, but I think most of it
would be. I don't know if I can get them
an outback, out back steakhouse gift card, but I like
that idea. I do like the idea of outpack, back,
(03:25):
out back, solid blumin onion great who doesn't.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Like a Be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Let Hit to the Fox says, and now every day,
this time The Doug Gottlieb Show. In the Bonus podcast,
we play for your portion of previous show Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports One. Here's Dan Patrick talking about Kyle Raleigh
cal Rawley.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
It is fiftyeth home run. He joins Mickey Mantle. Only
switch hitters in baseball Hittory to hit fIF to hear
more home runs in a season, and the third American
League player, first non Yankee, to reach fifty before the
end of August. Aaron Judge did it twice and Roger
Maris did it. This is big time stuff, man. Mariners
beat the Padres. See that.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
More importantly, you're winning big games.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
And you're putting heat on the Astros the Yankees for
the playoff spot there. And if you look at the
al MVP odds, now you got a race going on
here because Aaron Judge at minus one sixty, cal Rawley
is plus one hundred and he's doing it now. At
the end of August and if you can have this
creep over in September, but playing the position of catcher
(04:43):
should I don't know how the voters will look at this,
but I just remember when you look at great catchers,
you got to still catch every single game or a
majority of the game, and the beating that you take
and being a catcher, and then you're going to hit
fifty home runs. I wish he didn't have the nickname
the big Dumper, yeah, because it feels gimmicky.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
M feels gimmicky. Huh uh, I don't. I think big
Dumper sounds very humanizing, and he had it well before
he started hitting fifty home runs. It's a remarkable story.
It was one where when Jay Stu would point out
to me it wasn't gonna last because he's a catcher.
There's no reason I wouldn't agree with him. Right, Everything
(05:28):
historically tells us those guy's fate, So, you know, barring
something terribly unforeseen like him using some sort of substance.
I think this is incredible year. This is Brady Quinn
talking about the agreement between Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
If you're looking at Trey Hendrickson and his agent. I
don't know what their expectations were for a deal or
a contract, but this has to be a huge disappointment.
And I'm sure look there, I'm sure there's Bengals fans
who will be out there and be like, see the kid,
pay them all. They got it all. So yeah, you're right,
they got it all done. But this is kicking the road.
(06:06):
Uh He'll they'll you know, go their separate ways after
this season, which is unfortunate because I think Trey Hendrickson
sells a lot of good football left in him. But
for the Bengals, the ruting's kind of already on the wall.
They drafted Schmart Stewart, they have, you've got his replacement
in house. This is probably best for them to allow
schmar Stewart to come along as an edge rusher, given
(06:27):
how long it took them to do a great terms.
And for Trey Hendrickson, he gets a pay bump, gets
through out there and play for a year, then proved
hopefully maybe to someone else that they can actually pay him,
you know, like other teams out there.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah. My guess though, is that there wasn't the vibrant
trade market that trade hendrick then Trey hendrick Theon thought,
now it's not just trading for Trey Hendrickson, and you're
only in trade for tre Hendrickson if you're going to
give him new contract. So yeah, there's a lot that
goes into this. We talked about a sum in the
radio show. I think he's got to give everything he's
(07:00):
got this year, try not miss games because he's hurt,
because he's getting older, and because that'll be the narrative
if he misses games, even if he's trying to protect himself. So,
but it did get a bump. I don't think it
reflects terribly well with the Bengals. Yes, they may have
won the hardline stance of a low, long term extension,
but you know they basically negotiated with terrorists, and you know,
(07:22):
a guy who's under contract, they get more for this contract.
I don't know enough about that part of the business.
I do feel like it's too big a bump considering
you are not forced to give it to him. You're
just not You're not forced in any way to give
any sort of salary increase. Here's Chris Brussard talking about
Pat Mahomes.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
And I expect them to come out and have a
great year, a great year, and look, he's got all
the motivation in the world. Right, We've seen all these
publications and pundits put various quarterbacks ahead of him. Obviously
the bad law. He didn't play well in the Super
Bowl like I mean he is, he should be and
(08:05):
I'm not expecting Nick the fifty touchdown year he had
his second year in the league.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
But I'm talking.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
I do think a twenty twenty season way he through
for about forty seven hundred yards thirty eight and six
thirty eight touchdown six picks, or when he won the
MVP in twenty twenty two forty one touchdowns twelve picks
that year, He's somewhere.
Speaker 7 (08:25):
All the time total yardage.
Speaker 6 (08:26):
Yeah, I'm not saying he'll go that high, but I
think he's going to have another prolific in the MVP conversation,
where he hasn't been the last two years, is what
you're saying.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I think Pat Mahomes is awesome. If I'm starting an
NFL team, he's my quarterback. I don't know if he's
an MVP or not. I'm just I'm not picking against them.
I am not. I think there's a world where Travis
Kelcey's washed. I think there's a world with where the
league's caught up to him, but they still have Pat Mahomes.
I'd still pick him to win the division. And I
never think it's crazy to pick the best quarterback in
(09:03):
football to be an MVP. Not a crazy thought, That's
what the Fox said.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Let's find out who What's annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Hey, Doug, I'm going to use a phrase. Gen Z's
gonna have no idea what this means, But back when
America was smarter and reading things, there was just kind
of this phrase. It was like the ultimate compliment you
could pay to an author or a publisher was I
could not put the book down. I picked it up
(10:00):
and I couldn't put it down. In fact, I tried
to go to sleep last night and I just I
had to finish the book. So as it relates to
gen Z terms, I've done the exact same thing with
the Cowboys documentary. I cannot stop watching it at every turn.
If I had something to do, I put that off
(10:22):
and prioritize finishing this thing. It is a very riveting
docuseriies that obviously is through the prism of Jerry Jones.
There's no other reason why they got the access they did.
There's no other reason why it looks so good. It's
because Jerry Jones wanted to control the narrative of the
(10:44):
Cowboys story. And as long as you know that going in,
the access is riveting and the video is riveting. I've
never seen this, so if any of you listeners or
even you Doug has heard this, it's not new to you.
But I saw this, and I'm thinking to myself, if
this happened today, how much of a shit storm would
(11:07):
it cause on debate TV and talk radio. You have
the most popular, highest paid quarterback in nineteen ninety five,
who just you know, coming off of two Super Bowls
in three years, and you have a new head coach
and Barry Switzer. Troy Aikman hated Barry Switzer. NFL Films
(11:34):
caught this on tape. I don't know why it's taken
thirty years for them to release it, but this is
what Troy Aikman said, And we can't play this on
live radio, which is why I wanted to save it
for the pod. This is what Troy Aikman told an
assistant coach on the sidewines during a game in nineteen
ninety five Cowboys Escape.
Speaker 7 (11:55):
It was a struggle, fucking tired being a guy who's
got to run down everybody's goddamn throat all the time.
When don't we have a fucking coach he gets over
there and does something about it. Then I want to
learn patter puddy on the ass, and they haven't got
a fucking job all night, guy's after fucking off.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Nobody says anything about it.
Speaker 7 (12:11):
We got a head coach, want say anything about it,
We got coaches offense, but we won't do anything about it.
I mean enough enough.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Could you imagine?
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Could you imagine if that happened today?
Speaker 2 (12:23):
No? No, but it's everything you think right with Barry Switzer.
Uh you know where Barry let boys be boys and
Jimmy Johnson was was a dictator and you get you
get one year of kind of the carryovers some of
the discipline, and then it goes that it phrays away.
But yeah, if it was today, oh my gosh, it's amazing.
(12:45):
Traig was amazing, amazing.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
I hate I am annoyed that it took me thirty
years to hear that sound. That's true, and thanks to
the Jerry Jones documentary, Oh We Got It, I very
much recommend it for anybody who wants something to watch.
The Dave Portnoy situation annoys me for this reason. It
was news late last night and early this morning that
(13:09):
Dave Portannoy will is banned from Ohio State, which is
significant because I think Fox Sports has the Ohio State
Michigan game. I mean it's Ohio State Texas game, and
Portnoy is now a part of the college sports presentation
on Fox Sports. Correct me if I'm wrong on any
(13:31):
of this. So Dave port and I had told somebody
or at least had it leaked that he was banned
from the stadium because he's such a big Michigan homer
and he's had some bad things to say about Ohio
State in recent years. Ohio State sad comes out and
says there's nothing to that, there is no ban. What
annoys me about this is a couple of things. I
(13:52):
don't know what's truth from fiction here, Just like our
daily news in this post truth society, and it really
kind of plays into the right wing kind of playbook here.
I thought, if it hasn't set, if it hasn't been
set already online, I thought somebody for sure would go
to the First Amendment thing where they would throw the
(14:13):
First Amendment out and use it in the wrong way,
which it always is by people on the right. This
whole thing annoys me, and I still don't know what
the truth is, Doug.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
The whole thing annoys me as well. I'm right there
with you, and it's very, very, very frustrating. But I
also think that you mentioned the right wing playbook. I
couldn't agree with you more. It's one of those to
where the barstool, the stoolies, right, the fans, they think
(14:45):
everybody's out to get them, right, that's the whole thing there.
They're like Sports and Life Eagle fans, right, we don't know,
you don't, No one likes this and we don't care.
And then you add in they think every everybody's out
to get us, which none of that is true. I
think this is I don't know if it's brilliant, but
it's it's classic Portnoy, you know, making it. They'm I've
(15:11):
been banned from the state, Like, that's not It's very likely.
What happened was they said, you can't use the inside
of the stadium, you can't use this, you can't use that.
Oh so why because it's portnookas I've been like, no,
we don't want you in there. We're not doing that.
So I think this is a use of the media
(15:32):
to create a narrative to let people know that Barstool
is now on Fox and he'll be on the he'll
be on the big noon kickoff. I don't know if
you saw. They were supposed to have a pre big
newon kickoff show which is now not going to take place.
So who actually knows what the truth of the even
deal is. But I do think that Portnoy there's a
(15:54):
genius in that in he's now he got people talking,
he's got his own people defending him when there's nothing
defend him for.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
So, the biggest news of the day by far, at
least in pop culture, is that Travis Kelcey and Taylor
Swift announced their engagement on social media. And yeah, yeah,
there's a lot of ways to go with this story,
but here's how it impacts me? How does it relate
to me? You've said on your show that the most
(16:24):
disarming words in the English language is I was wrong.
I had the balls yesterday to admit I was wrong
about cal Rawley. It took huge nads to swallow my
pride and open the microphone and say I'm the one
at the All Star break who said it's got to
slow down. He cannot keep up this pace. In fact,
(16:47):
doing the the home run derby will probably even slow
down that pace. And I was wrong fifty home runs
last night. Now Kelsey and Swift are engaged. And I
was out pretty really not believing in the sham of
a public relationship. Thought it was a publicity stunt. Wasn't
(17:08):
falling for it. I let resentments sink in. So now
two straight days, Doug, I've been proven wrong, and I
don't like being proven wrong.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Nobody loves to be proven wrong. But Lixen, I think
your original thoughts on this relationship were the thoughts of
probably sixty seventy percent of Americans. They've made it through.
Now it looks like they're going to get married, so
good for them. What annoys you? What annoys you so
far today?
Speaker 3 (17:34):
What is it being wrong.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Being wrong?
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Then did the David Portnoy situation and the fact that
it took thirty years for me to hear that Troy
Aikman sound.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
I think being wrong is annoying for everybody, not just
you being but it's like, it's not fun. It's great
that you own that you're wrong, but it's not fun.
It's annoying.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Right, Why are we doing this?
Speaker 1 (18:02):
I do because we can.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Hey, Dennis Rodman is a strange character in the sports landscape.
He's still around and he weighed in on the Jordan v.
Lebron goat conversation on a podcast recently.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Michael Jordan and Lebron at the prime Right, Yeah, Michael
Jordan too sexy man when he had the ball or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Lebron is like a guy that fucking dump truck. What
the fuck?
Speaker 7 (18:33):
Man?
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Little Michael joraans hit that dance.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
Like we're mis a car.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Maybe next time you do a podcast, make sure the
gardener knows you're recording.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Plus, I mean, the description of Michael Jordan is sexy
is so awkward with Dennis Trobman, Why could we play
for you? Because we can't. That's infing in the bonus podcast.
