Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
What up, Doug Gottlieb Show. In the bonus Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio app Well, come in. Did you like college football
this weekend? Did you like Alabama going on the road
to Florida State. Did you like Auburn going on the
road and beating Baylor? Did you like all the other
true road games Texas taking on Ohio State in the shoot,
(00:35):
Notre Dame played at Miami, And uh, there's there's a
bunch of stuff to it. This is a college basketball coach,
and I'm I understand we're at a lower level of
college basketball than than the Dukes, the Kansas Is, the Carolinas,
et cetera. And of course in college football we'd be
at a much lower level even though we're Division one.
(00:55):
There's levels to Division one. But but the the art
of scheduling is literally an art. And it's great to
say we're gonna go out and play somebody. The problem
is there's a reason that SEC teams forever would play
neutral side games, wouldn't play true road games. It's really difficult.
(01:21):
It's very difficult matter of fact, people are going on
the SEF series dead blah blah blah, like okay, Well,
I saw LSU go into Clemson take on a team
that returned their starting quarterback, one of the toughest plays
to play in the country, and dominate the game running
the football. And then I saw Auburn going and play
play and beat Baylor. Like yeah, Alabama loss first time
(01:45):
starter going on the road against the guy who, going
into last season was supposed to be the number one
overall pick as a quarterback, and Miami's got dudes. So
I guess here's the thing, the art of scheduling, And
a lot of people are like, well, why do you
play Sisters of the Poor? Why do you play these
these games? Why do you pay a million five to
(02:06):
get a win? Because you need it to get everybody
reps and to get everybody's confidence. Because when you lose
your confidence, you start questioning the coaching, you start questioning yourself.
That doesn't mean that Alabama's gonna lose your confidence. But again,
like this is if you're Alabama and everybody's biggest game,
you have Wisconsin comments, Why though, fuck are you playing
Florida State to open the season. You set your coach
(02:31):
up to fail. You set them up to fail. Now,
I don't know when that game was was on the
books from I really don't, but I can tell you
that it's a fucking terrible scheduling. Nobody else will talk
about this in uh in college football. I will. It's
(02:52):
not that fucking hard. Okay, I'll give you an example. Okay,
Nick says, last year they opened up at Middle Tennessee State,
then they played Texas at home, who they lost to.
Then they played South Florida, who was shitty on the road.
(03:14):
Then they played SEC play and the only other non
SEC game they played was ut Chattanooga later in the year.
Like really, yeah, go to twenty twelve. Check out twenty
twenty two. Excuse me, check out their schedule. They opened
with Utah State, then they played Texas, then they played Monroe.
Later on the year they played Austin p You open
(03:36):
up with a game to get your confidence. Now, that
hasn't always been the case. Right back in twenty one,
I think this was the COVID year. They opened up
in Miami, a game they won. Miami wasn't very good.
I think they were supposed to be pretty good but
fell part of the time. They played Mercer, they did play,
they played Southern miss and they played New Mexico State.
(04:00):
Go to twenty nineteen Duke, NC State, Southern Miss, Western Carolina.
The point is that it's pretty obvious that the Alabama method,
which is tried and true, is for the most part,
unless you know you got a squad open with a
home game where you're gonna get a win like last year,
(04:21):
Western Kentucky, South Florida, then to Wisconsin before you play Georgia. Okay,
play one hard game in the non conference this year
at Florida State, terrible scheduling, Louisiana, Monroe, Wisconsin, at home
East Illinois. They still have to go to Georgia, still
have to go to Missouri, still have to go to
South Carolina, still have to go down the Planes. And
(04:43):
at home they have LSU Tennessee and Vandy who beat
them last year. That game was lost in scheduling, and
I don't know who scheduled this game, but they probably
should be fired today.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Be short to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays a three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
App let's get to the Foxs and now what say
every Day this time that Doug Gottlieb show in the
Bonus podcast, play for your portion the previous show, Fox
Sports Radio, Fox Sports One. Here's Colin Calher talking about
Bill Belichick and North Carolina football.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Belichick has become the chef that won't change the menu.
Bill in his career, if you count the Browns, the Patriots,
and Carolina last night without Tom Brady has averaged nineteen
points in his career. Forget the record, which is unimpressive,
sub five hundred. He doesn't move the ball. He doesn't
take offense seriously enough. Change the menu, update the weight,
(05:45):
staff to new menu. It's a new area of town
and there are all the hipsters around you are taking
offense seriously. It feels like Bill has moved into a
time in his life where he just wants to work
with coaches he's comfortable with. Then he pull he's comfortable with.
You know, there was a years and years ago on
(06:06):
this show, I think it was Urban Meyer had said
he had talked to Bill, you know, and at one
point Bill had said, you know, there's certain players I'm
just not going to coach anymore. That is the opposite
of the early Bill Belichick. You took guys that could
be a little crazy. You took guys that didn't make
it comfortable. You had to be a mentor to some
of the coaches. They didn't know your system. But that's okay.
That is how you grow in life. With a little discomfort.
(06:27):
You have to bark. Occasionally things go a little sideways.
I just I had concerns coming into this thing. Is
that TCU came in with a staff that had been around,
they knew college football. But this was way worse than
I thought.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah. Again, I respectful to Colin like their offense was
fine in the first drive, but what happens after first
drive is guys have to make plays. Quarterback doesn't appear
put good enough. I don't think they have good enough talent.
It's hard when you bring in seventy five new guys,
seventy five smart wins. They're smart guys, They're not the
(07:10):
only ones competing for it. They also played a team that,
let's be honest, like TCU a couple of years ago,
plays for national championship. Then they're down, like they those
guys know what they're doing, they know the players, they
know the market. It's just it's a completely different world
from the one they operated in. It doesn't mean that
(07:31):
eventually they won't figure it out. But you know, Michael
Lombardi's never done this at the college level. He's their GM,
so the evaluations are a little bit different. I don't
think they didn't score because there's something wrong with their
offensive game plan. They just turned the ball over. It
weren't very good. That was the problem with their offensive
game plan. Here's Dan Byer filling in from yesterday with
(07:54):
Monte Bilago's talking about Arch Banning.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
For those of us who had CDs, this was track one, right,
I want we know the hits are track two, Track three,
track four. That's what's coming up. And on a great album,
you could listen to song after song after song. This
was track one on arch Manning's album. And I just
feel everybody is now taking a victory lap. We don't
(08:19):
know the type of quarterback he's going to be. We
don't know if arch Manning is going to be more
like Peyton, more like Eli, or more like his grandpa,
who he's named after the way that he ran the football.
He seems more like Archie than he does of Eli
or Peyton. By the way, Eli threw tons of interceptions,
would lead the league in the NFL in interceptions. You
know why, because he also didn't have a conscience that
(08:41):
had the confidence enough that I'm gonna make these throws.
I've felt Eli Manning had made Odell Beckham who he
is because there were eighty percent of the quarterbacks of
the NFL that would never make the throws that Eli
would be willing to make. And then you have Peyton
who was able to dissect defenses through him being basically
a coach on the field and ends up winning two
(09:01):
Super Bowl titles. They are all these different ways to
go because you have one weekend in the spotlight against
the defending national champions, against the new defensive coordinator. And
by the way Arch could play this year, Arch could
play next year, and as crazy as it sounds, could
play the next year after that if you want to
before going to the National Football League. That's what's ahead
(09:22):
for Arch Manning. It's not just one game, and I
feel we need to pump the brakes. And if you're
if you're like me, by now, buy your stock now
when it dipped after this game, because it's never ever
going to be as low as it was after Saturday.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
I actually I'm gonna agree with Dan Byer on this one.
From a from from this perspective, you know, I don't
think he's Prownnie. I think he got sped up. I
think he got pressured. I think he got confused. I
think he looked like an experienced quarterbacks. That's really what
I was. Now. I am taking people's word for it
(10:01):
that there's a top end there that is missing so far.
But I'm willing to say, hey that like first game
of the season, it's terrible scheduling. And maybe what it
does for Texas's those guys, the guys that are arrogant,
it levels them out. But for other guys trying to
figure out, you're like, well maybe we're not any good
starts questioning. So you do need to gain your confidence,
and I think Texas will soon. Here's Ben Miller talking
(10:24):
about Alabama football.
Speaker 5 (10:26):
Would Nick sib And actually leave television and go back
to Alabama and save the Crimson Tide? Is it true?
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Now?
Speaker 5 (10:35):
Is it fun to imagine that? Absolutely fun to imagine that? Absolutely?
One are the chances I'll say the chance is five percent.
There's a five percent chance that Nick Saban says, I
gotta go back. I gotta save Alabama. I built this
thing up. We can't have it torn down right now.
And I'm gonna leave TV and I'm gonna go in there.
(10:56):
And that's it. But the legend of Nick Saban, now
we we'll have to get vanned the one leg Abama
man on to go over this. But the legend is
so big. He's become like Elvis in the state of Alabama.
Like there's sightings of Nick Saban and people have said, well,
I saw Sabin, you know, so and so he was
kind of near the campus. You see this?
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Was that mean?
Speaker 5 (11:20):
Is there something there? And you know someone will say, oh,
I saw him at the gas station or something like that.
Here's the thing though about Nick Saban. He's still getting
paid five hundred thousand dollars a year by the university.
They gave him this golden parachute. Or even though he's
no longer coaching, he's like the coach emeritis.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, I don't, I just I don't all the talk
of like Calin de boor like what are we even
talking about? Honestly? How have we become message board fan?
It's his first game of his second year, shit was
(12:06):
really really hard. And yeah, they won nine games last year.
In his first year, it is not easy. And you're
following a guy who this is why it's the job
that you shouldn't take, but everybody feels like you have to.
By the way, Nick Saban's first year, they went seven
(12:26):
and six. Granted weren't coming off of all the consecutive
double digit wins. But I think the bigger point is
that this SEC, this is there's a reason Saban got out.
There's a reason Saban got out. It's SEC is way
harder than it's ever been, way more difficult than it's
(12:47):
ever been. And you know what was their losses last year?
They lost at Vanderbilt. That was the hard one. That
was the one you can't lose. They lost at tennis See,
they lost at Oklahoma. I don't know, Like the Vandy
one is hard to swallow. You lose a game the
(13:08):
way they lost it on the road to Florida State, Like, okay, Well,
our impression of Florida State is they weren't any good
because they won two games last year. But again, college
football's changed. You throw a bunch of money and this
is a Florida state team, though, and undefeated in the
regular season the year before, so which program they're playing.
I just I don't even like the idea of opening
(13:29):
the discussion. You're not firing him. It costs like one
hundred and thirty million dollars to fire him. You're not
doing it. Let the guy coach see if you get
it done. Give him four years. If he doesn't get
better after four years, then you move on. That's what
the Fox said say.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Let's find out who What's annoying?
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
And it's your annoying.
Speaker 7 (14:07):
So Tom Brady, the Legend the Goat. Tom Brady was
on with Chris Collinsworth on a PFF podcast. He said
something that could be if if picked up by the
a certain outlet could be presented as kind of racist,
racist adjacent you know. He's like, yeah, you know, people
(14:31):
just aren't The position just isn't as mentally equipped now
as it was back then. They starts getting into running quarterbacks.
But anyways, what I found interesting about the podcast was
this little tidbit about what he watches in a quarterback
after a touchdown pass.
Speaker 8 (14:49):
That's what I look for all the time when a
quarterbacks throws a touchdown pass. I actually watched to see
who he goes and celebrates with, because what did I do?
I looked for my offensive and every time I went
down and celebrated in the end zone with my teammates,
every time, I wanted everyone to feel like they were
part of the success. I told the lineman, we're all
(15:11):
running to the end zone and we're celebrating as a team,
because I think that's way more intimidating than a quarterback
doing his six shooter guns and pointing up in the
crowd and doing all that other bullshit. That's very self promotional,
but it's not about winning, and I think winning in
football is about a team always a team attitude.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
First, see you, what are you annoyed by?
Speaker 7 (15:34):
I'm annoyed by the fact that he makes us two choices.
Either your six shooter guy, look at me guy, or
you're running into the end zone with your team. I've
always been in the opinion that when I see like
a Baker Mayfield running into the team, running into the
zone with the team. I think that's unbecoming of a
professional quarterback. A third option that Tom Brady did not
(15:56):
mention that you've seen quarterbacks for decades do is they
throw the ball and they walk off the field, let
the receivers and whoever celebrate. I think that's badass, So
I'm not sure why he left that one out. I
do agree the whole six shooter thing look at me
is off putting. But I'm also I think it's just
unbecoming to run into the end zone and celebrate with
(16:19):
your team if you're a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
I'm actually with Tom on this one, but I agree
with you. It's it's not an either or. There are
other ways in which you cannot celebrate and celebrate others.
Who else?
Speaker 7 (16:34):
Tyreek Hill has not made a not made a team
captain on the Dolphins. That's not surprising, shouldn't surprise anybody.
I don't know if you. If you I guess listed
the characteristics Doug of your captain captain makes up a captain.
I'm guessing each of those traits would be the exact
(16:55):
opposite of what Tyreek Hill brings to the table. And
then I saw this amazing story that has the details
of his divorce and how much he's paying out, and
then it reminded the world the details of this divorce
that he had. At least they made they made the
(17:16):
point of saying at least five kids last year and
it wasn't not one of them was with with this
wife that just left them. So Tyreek Hill is always annoying.
I like bringing him up in this segment he had
he basically personifies annoying. But him not being made a
captain is not surprising.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, I would agree with you. Now, he's not surprising.
It actually means that the Dolphins are kind of getting
it and not just giving him some random, some random deal, right,
or just oh you're a captain just because we say
you're a captain. Yeah, you know, because we want it
to happen and want you then to absorb leadership. He
and he is annoying.
Speaker 7 (17:54):
That that part, to me, is is always a leap
of faith from coach. I'm gonna make you a captain
and maybe you'll change your stripes, maybe you'll become a leader.
That's dicey. So Shannon Sharp's annoying, and I actually I
agree with a part of Ray Lewis here So ray
Lewis went on this tangent on this podcast he was
(18:17):
on lately about how disappointed he kind of is about
how or confused he is about Shannon Sharp's media persona.
He's talking about Club Sha Sha here. So for those
that don't quite know the depths of Shannon Sharp's media presentation,
he does like a night we show with Ocho Cinco.
(18:37):
He'll also put the basketball player I forget his name
right now, but every once in a while then they'll
just kind of chop up the night sports. That's different.
Club Shay Sheha is the kind of the media maker,
I'm sorry, the moneymaker, the one that you see him
sit down with entertainers. And this is what ray Lewis had.
Speaker 9 (18:55):
To say, that route is is to become so worldly
that you've become pop because you're talking about ignorance, right
A lot of times, a lot of these gossip conversations
that they having and bringing up all this stuff. I'm
not gonna do that to nobody. I'm not in the
business for that. I'm in life to try to teach
people what doesn't mean to be a better man or
get back to the kingdom, you know, And a lot
(19:17):
of times like and a lot a lot of guys
get in trouble with these podcasts and things, man, because
everybody wants to follower, everybody wants to be popular, everybody
wants to make money. But that's a that's a tight
that's a tight rope into what you call influence and popularity.
(19:37):
The devil has the ability to make you popular. God
has the ability to give you influence that when people
see you, they see an image of Him. And that's
the thing for me that started to switch with with
not just Sharning, but just a couple of people. I'm like, Wow,
you would switch out like that really? And I would
never ever why because of the respect that I have
(19:59):
for my mother, my daughters, my granddaughters life period. And
I think men, given these new platforms, we've overrolled what
the platform is actually for.
Speaker 7 (20:13):
This is great. There's a lot of good stuff in there,
a lot of spiritual stuff, religious stuff that I don't
really get into. But the whole thing is this. The
thing that annoys me most about Shannon Sharp is how
popular that podcast has become. Because when things become popular,
I have a sickness. I have a sickness of fomo
and I have to consume it. So I have watched
(20:36):
or listened to Shannon Sharp's Shay Shay podcast, and it
could not lose me anymore. It is like people talking
in a different language. It is like they're talking about
a world that I have no idea exists. It's a
complete departure from my life. And I'm not talking about
just culturally or race here. But I'm just saying that
(20:57):
I'm confused by what. What makes it so popular? The
Democratic nominee did that podcast, that's how That's how popular
it was, That's how many people download it. So it's annoying.
It annoys me how popular the podcast is. And then
Ray Lewis gave me some context that I appreciated.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
It is it. I'm I'm actually with you. I don't
get it either. I'm fascinated by why why it is.
I don't get it, but I definitely don't get it.
So you and I agree, Uh, okay, So what do
I have? I have? I have Shannon Sharp? What else
I got?
Speaker 7 (21:42):
The Shannon Sharp thing annoys me. Tyreek Hill always annoys me.
And then Tom Brady not given that third option where
you just throw a touchdown pass and walk off the field.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Uh, I'm Shannon Sharp's easy one. You know it's It's
It's again. It's one of those I just, honestly, this
is do you remember Family Matters with Erkele Never got
that show, didn't get it at all. I would say, say,
by the Bells another one. I don't really understand. Maybe
(22:16):
I was a little bit too old. I had more
of a discerning TV. I watched sitcoms that I thought
were really funny, like Friends, but before that Cheers I
found to be really really funny. Seinfeld, some of the
humor was more adult, whereas I just it was like
canned cheesy. I never got it. Didn't get those DON'TK club.
(22:39):
It's annoying.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Why are we doing this because we can?
Speaker 7 (22:51):
Hey, Doug, did you catch any of the new show
on Fox Mornings before cow heard the barstool guys those
doing their thing. H did not? Okay, so they launched
their show. It's It definitely has this clumsy feel to it.
But I have a feeling that's their brand. I don't
(23:12):
I don't know their brand, so this will be my
kind of introduction to them as they try to shoehorn
this kind of like, uh, I don't know. Alternative show
that has no rules into a cable program that does
have rules and commercials. So afterwards they did a they
did an after show to talk about about their launching stuff,
(23:35):
and they started talking about what I just referred to,
kind of like they need to scale it back and
think about the FCC and stuff. Now, Hey, Brandon Walkers
on TV.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
I don't know, hello, mister syndication.
Speaker 6 (23:47):
Yeah, sure, sure, sure, not that big of a deal.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Guy.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
How hard was it to not swear?
Speaker 4 (23:53):
How hard was it?
Speaker 6 (23:53):
Not as hard as I thought? I was very concined.
I didn't sleep well last night. I was very concerned
about that part.
Speaker 5 (23:59):
Is there clarity on like the in between words like cock?
Speaker 6 (24:03):
No, I don't my cock? Like they just gave us
a speech right before, Hey guys, we do have a
button and we will press it, but please don't cuss.
And that scared me enough to worry. I didn't even
I didn't do cock. I didn't do balls. I didn't
do anything. You knew balls.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
Would you have done balls I thought about doing. If
you sat on your balls, would you announce it?
Speaker 6 (24:22):
I had balls on the tongue once, but I didn't
say that. Okay, balls was right on my tongue bauz.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
Why could I play for you because we can't. That
will be interesting to see if that show is able
to evolve why you played for you because we can.
That's it for the end of the Modus Podcast. I
got the radio show three to five Eastern, twelve two Pacific,
Fox Sport Tradio, iHeart Radio app. I'm Doug Outli
