Speaker 1 (00:00):
Alright, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in the
Bonus with Doug gottli.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
What Up Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
In the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app Welcome in.
Why is the NFL the most popular league? I think
most of us know it's because it's the easiest to
bet on. Doesn't mean it's easiest to win betting on,
but it's the easiest to bet on. That you know
when it is. You know, fantasy football is essentially gambling
(00:35):
and whatever. But I also think that the NFL has
tapped into something and I'm not even sure they know
how they're doing it, but they've been doing it, which
is the league has a lot of parody and on
any given Sunday or any given Thursday, you can get
(00:57):
a win. I don't know what becomes of the Eagles
not trending in the right direction, but these are two
games in four days in which they look bad, and
we'll see what happens moving forward. Is they have the
weekend off and plenty of talent to reset themselves. But
you have to be honest and say, in the results
that we saw last night, what is your reaction to
(01:18):
the Giants thumping the Eagles and not just being able
to beat the Eagles, but maintain possession of the ball,
run the ball down and felt like the Eagles quit
late and the Giants got more energy late to close
the deal. This is a franchise that hadn't won a
couple of years and against the franchise that just won
a Super Bowl, and it's one big Pretty much every
year in dominated the division.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
But there's something to the parody of this league. I
think part of it is the salary cap.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
I don't think has any question, because if you go
all in on a couple of players, there's going to
be some holes. And even though the Eagles have a
ton of talent, some of those holes are You had
to take younger players, and some of those younger guys
now think they should get paid. Some of that's affecting
their performance, or some of it is selfishness, or you
got to decide what you're doing with the quarterback. If
you're going to give Jalen Hurts all that money, he's
(02:07):
got to perform like a quarterback worth all that money
and throwing the football. He has not performed like he's
been worth all that money.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Whereas the Giants.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
When you're not spending a bunch of money on quarterback
and you're not spending a bunch of money on running back,
you can build out a better roster. And the roster
has clearly gotten better, even with some major injuries. Maybe
it's the Thursday night game, which is a quick turnaround,
and the Giants game plan can be very simple, and
the Eagles had to try and fix things and they
didn't have time to fix them. But whatever they're doing,
(02:38):
that result is a surprise. And when you look around
the league, there have been several of those surprise results.
Patriots going in and beating the Bills in Buffalo, and
when you feel like every team has a chance, it
is going to make you pay attention, especially to those
standalone of the big games. More often than not, happened
first game in the season with the Chargers being the Chiefs,
(03:00):
happened last week with the Patriots beating the Bills, and
just happened last night with the Giants beating Eagles. There's
lots of reasons we watched the NFL above other sports,
but maybe one of the understated ones is that old
adage that on any given Sunday, it really, really deems true.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Let's Let's Get what the Fox says?
Speaker 1 (03:30):
And now.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
What does the Fox say.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Every day at this time?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
And the Doug gottlib Show in the Bonus Podcast to
play for your portion of a previous show, Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports One. Here's Dan Patrick talking about the Dodgers
Phillies game and how it ended last night.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
The Dodgers made it interesting. Great pitching last night that
was fun, fun to watch. And here is the final
call of the Dodgers, moving on to the NLCS. Heart
rates through the room, the old one pitch PAHs grounds
at the cookery.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
He can't find it.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
He does home pits what Tim stores and the Dodgers
are going to the Championship Series. Fire lurks to off.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
In center field.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
The Dodger's still.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
Right near first base on a ground ball back to
the pitcher.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Andy Potz somehow gets the job done.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
That's courtesy of a five seventy only Sports Dodgers radio network.
So he got bases loaded to come back to back
or to cookering and he is looking to make a
play at home and he doesn't have to he can
go to first and get the out. But he pauses
and it's almost as if he took his eye off
the ball and the glove, you know, his glove and
the batter, and he got lost. He got caught in
(04:45):
no man's land. Kim scores. Kim actually missed home plate
and then came back and touched home plate. But a
while and we were talking about the worst way to lose,
and it's a walk off air, and that's what happened.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I don't think he got confused.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I think he was going to first base and then yeah,
when he lost the ball, when he misplayed the ground ball,
he juggled it and that's when he kind of panicked
and threw at home. But like, look, this is you know,
it's we're talking about pitching, defense, timely hitting. But defense
is a huge factor, huge factor, and it's one of
(05:28):
those things that you don't you can't plan for with
the use of analytics. You know, how many times does
he make that play? Yeah, okay, probably ninety nine and
one hundred, but under that level of pressure with a
guy coming home when he misplays the original ground ball.
How many times he make that play crazy, ending to
a phenomenally pitched and at times really well played defensive game,
(05:53):
just not in that particular instance. Here's Colin Cowhert talking
about the Giants last night.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
Was about the New York Giants. They have found their
franchise quarterback. It's gonna be bumpy. You're gonna have weeks
like last week and you're gonna have last night if
they can keep him healthy, confident, athletic, slippery, big boy
NFL throws. That is an NFL franchise quarterback feet arm confidence.
Once you get that right, Giant fans, such like when
(06:20):
you found Eli, gets much easier to build the roster.
I mean, the Giants last night are missing their number
one receiver and the number two receiver and they scored
thirty four points. I know you all loved Obj and
you love Malik Neighbors, Comeambra. That's icing the cake is
Cam Skataboo and Jackson Dart because of the way they play.
(06:41):
They're tough, they're young, they're physical. In the Northeast because
of the weather, Tyreek Hill is not winning your titles.
Your left tackle is your star back. January. Football is
not decided by the fastest guys. Jackson Dart's tough, Cam's
(07:02):
Scataboo is tougher.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Look I think.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
I mean, obviously there's a different energy in there New York.
And it's so interesting on how we've all determined that
we've all determined that the Giants that they're going to
fire their head coach and that they're going to change.
I don't think yesterday was just about the Giants. I
thought about the Eagles as well. An Eagles, that's embarrassing.
For the Eagles, it just is to get behind and
(07:29):
to have a quarterback who doesn't look like he can
bring you back with his arm, and then late when
you need to get us to stop, they couldn't stop
camp Scataboo. I thought, for a defending Super Bowl champion,
a team that likes to act like they're the toughest
ombrees in the bunch, they sure didn't look like it.
But as for the Giants, it's really interesting on how
(07:49):
what Russell Wilson, all the words he says sound motivational,
but they don't motivate people the way that Jackson, Dart
and camp Scataboo has been able to and that's because
you can't fool players. If you can't make the plays,
they're not going to buy into it. I think they're
buying in Jackson dark. But remember it is, as Colin said,
going to be rocky. Here's the bar Arrington talking about
Eagles fans song.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
That's the Philly theme song today. Dang ge ego.
Speaker 8 (08:20):
Well, I mean, I'm just saying, I mean, they throwed it.
Let me tell you something, Philly. Oh tell me, let
me tell you. Let me tell you something about Philly fans.
I'm gonna tell y'all about Philly fans.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yeah, yeah, NASA.
Speaker 8 (08:37):
Did you know they got rated as the dumbest fan
base in all of sports?
Speaker 4 (08:45):
That's crazy. I don't know how you would do that
pole with it.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
What's the criteria?
Speaker 8 (08:51):
I don't know, but they were number one. They were
number one. There was a list that came out. I
forget where I saw it. But anyway, and listen, Philly
people are my people. So I feel like I'm allowed
to say this.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
I just I don't want to get into Eagles fans.
They're smart, they're dumb, Like that's that's not really a
battle that I want to fight. You know, I think
anybody who buys tickets to an NFL game, I don't
really I don't totally get anyway. You know, the PSL,
the costs of when you can you miss all the
other games. But I just don't have that level of passion,
(09:33):
even for the Chargers or the Packers I go to.
Maybe the Packers I would get because it's such a
valuable ticket, But I don't know. What I can tell you, though,
is that Eagles fans have seen this coming. I don't
think they're surprised by the regression within this team. They
they may go down as a dumb fan base to
on some scale, but they're smart and they they have
(09:54):
seen this coming.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
That's what the Fox Says.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Say.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Let's find out who What's annoying? Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
And now it's your.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
Annoying now, Doug. Frequent listeners to this show and the
live show know my opinion of Tom Brady, and I
think that after listening to the next couple bites, I
think a listener might be compelled to be like, you
know what, Jay Stu was out in front of something
(10:39):
and he's just like, he's seeking out things that confirm
what he predicted. And that's not what I'm doing at all.
In fact, I'm taking two of the most influential voices
of our space. Skip Bayless. You could have an opinion
about him, but you can't say that he's not influential.
He's got a bunch of followers, and Dan Lebotard, they
(11:03):
all weighed in on the same subject this week. The
voices are getting louder again. This is not I'm not
doing something just to say I told you so. I
don't care. I do like to confirm my instincts, especially
when it comes to broadcasting and presentation. So the following
is Skip Bayless on his podcast and Dan LeBatard on
(11:26):
his digital show.
Speaker 9 (11:27):
The more I listen to Tom Brady, the worse it gets.
He is all time Captain obvious. He is Vanilla extract.
It's he tells me nothing I can't see with my
own two eyes. And I do know football because I've
been doing this a long time, and I learned from
Don Shula, and I learned from Bill Washington. I learned
(11:48):
from Tom Landry and I learned from Jimmy Johnson. I did,
I paid my dues. But Tom never tells me anything
that I say, Oh, I didn't think of that Tony
Romo all Tony Romo's all over it. Tom's not gonna
tell you that. He's not gonna take any stance. He's
just gonna say what's happening. He's just gonna sort of
(12:10):
repeat what's actually happening that you can already see with
no real wisdom or evaluation or insight or analysis. I
just don't get it from Tom.
Speaker 10 (12:25):
Tom Brady is distracting me during games because he's still
bad at this. Like it's not even that he's neutral
or mediocre or milk toast or just there and I
don't notice it. I'm noticing, and he's distracting me with
it not being good. Has Tom Brady done anything during
(12:47):
any of these broadcasts that you guys remember, never mind
the way that Tony Romo started where he was correct
correctly predicting plays. Is there anything memorable that Tom Brady
is giving the Fox broadcast for that three hundred and
seventy five million guaranteed dollars that any of you have
from the first four weeks of the season.
Speaker 11 (13:08):
That would indicate that he has improved at this. To you,
I'm noticing when he's doing things incorrectly. I'm not noticing
when he's doing them correctly. And at this point he
needs to just be an offensive lineman. Don't get a penalty,
so I don't notice you.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
So, so that's what's annoying you.
Speaker 7 (13:28):
Tom Brady annoys me as a broadcaster. I have stated
no less than one hundred times on this broadcast and
our live broadcast over the last year, and the voices
are getting louder that agree with me. I've said from
the get go, I think he lacks the insight to
be good at live broadcasts. If you bring him in studio,
(13:51):
he's going to be an amazing energy guy. Those studio
shows don't necessarily entail a lot of insight. They just
want you to be smiling, energy and enthusiasm, and that
would also if they brought him in the studio, would
take away this perceived conflict of interest.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
I don't know if it would take away perceived conflict
of interest. It would take away from those meetings, but
he still had the perceived conflict of interest.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
I do agree with you.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
But I think that's why he wants to avoid the
studio shows, because he wants to show how much he knows.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
He wants to show how smart he is, and he wants.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
The energy of the people on the field before the
game and the people in the stadium to be looking
up at the most successful quarterback.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Of all time. I don't know if he's distracting.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I just think he's robotic and not particularly good. If
that distracts you, I do understand it. I actually do
understand it. What else about you?
Speaker 7 (14:47):
I like Eric Dickerson a lot. Eric Dickerson and I
have worked together, and I consider him like a work acquaintance.
If I saw him in a bar, I would go
up and wain have a great conversation with him. He
did something recently that really taps into what is going
(15:07):
on behind the scenes now. For those that don't know,
Jay Z was put in charge of talent for the
Super Bowl. I don't know what was it, five or
six years ago, and then so he chose Kendrick Lamar
last year, and the reviews of the choice were fairly negative,
and then the reviews after the performance were very polarizing,
(15:32):
and then he uh he settled on Bad Bunny this year.
I don't think it was his first or even his third,
fourth or fifth choice. They settled on Bad Bunny, who
is a Puerto Rican Much of his music and lyrics
are in Spanish. Eric Dickerson was cornered at lax I
want to say, and he said this.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
I'm not surprised and I feel a two second like that.
Speaker 12 (15:55):
You know, that's how they that political crap like they
the good guys may not, but you know, bad Miney
keep it bad miney front.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
He's from Puerto Rico to Puerto Rico. You don't want
to if you want, you as keep us over that apparently, well,
Puerto Rico is part of the US, I know.
Speaker 12 (16:10):
But if you don't want you don't like US, I mean,
don't don't come in the phone. I mean I heard
some said about the United States.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
Don't you know I'm from the US. I learn my country.
Speaker 12 (16:19):
And if you don't like the United States.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
He chanced that they don't come over again.
Speaker 7 (16:22):
So Eric Dickerson, a black man in his what sixties,
is kind of repeating a lot of what Maga is
saying about Bad Bunny. If you traffic in the Maga
kind of blog a sphere. Uh in social media, you'll
see a lot of this. That bad Bunny has refused
(16:42):
to play in the United States because he doesn't want
his audience being infiltrated by ice, and the MAGA world
is okay, then you can just live and play in
a place that is not the United States. And then
Eric hits on another point. Iowa Sam got a bunch
of controversy online recently for saying that Puerto Ricans are
(17:06):
not Americans h And that is another controversial part of this.
So Eric Dickerson, the thing that annoys me about this
is that I didn't know that he believed these things.
It's pretty amazing that he has been a victim of
his algorithm, like a lot of us have been.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Uh yeah, I mean, but didn't he didn't he do
a conspiracy theorist thing a couple of weeks ago that
we kind of admonished him on that.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
He said that, you know, the league wants this. I
mean again, Eric, I agree with you.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
I know, Eric, I like Eric, but he has he's
clearly taken a little bit of the pill there right
where you're like, what this is what the NFL does.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Like, let me explain how it actually fucking works to people.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Okay, whoever sponsors the halftime sh know, they're the ones
that make most of the decision.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
If it was Pepsi for a long time, and so
if you weren't a if you weren't sponsored by Pepsi,
you had no chance. If you were an endorser for
a different beverage company, you had zero chance. It didn't
matter if you SAG, if you sold one hundred billion albums.
(18:24):
There's just certain people that are never gonna do it.
And if you say this is a this is basically
he's saying this is a fuck you to the NFL,
Like I really don't again.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Part of it is the jay Z thing.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Part of it is the Latino audience is a hugely
important audience for the National Football League. There are so
many people talking about shit they have no fucking clue about.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
It's infuriating.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
And the worst ones are the MAGA people because they've
become what It's really interesting, right, the left in many
ways has become the right in that the right was
the exclusive party and the left was the inclusive, was
the inclusive, we love everybody, But now they become the
we love everybody unless you don't love everybody, And if
you don't love everything and every choice and every freedom,
(19:14):
well then fuck you. Right that that's what the left
has become. The left has tried to become some sort
of exclusive like the right has always been. But now
the right, Hey, the right has become that they're just everything.
Just like remember when people were woke, everything was racist.
Now every decision that's made that's not right along the
(19:35):
path of how they would make it is woke.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
That's woke. That's woke. That woke.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
It's like what or maybe you pick a halftime show
for a group of viewers who are not your hardcore
P one audience that brings in a greater number. And
oh yeah, by the way, I'm guessing, and I don't
know his demo. I'm guessing excus really really young. Just
so people are aware in major cities across the country, right,
(20:06):
we've been told I grew you when I grew up
in California, And we've been told that once you get
to like two thousand and thirty, two thousand and forty, right,
that Hispanic Hispanics, whether they're born in the United States
or born out outside, are going to be the majority right,
like you're actually playing to a bigger audience than you
think you're playing to. But nobody cares to do demos,
(20:28):
nobody cares to do any research. Instead, the right has
become anything that they don't like is woke. It may
be most artists, most okay are going to be are
are going to be of greater level of diversity.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Kid Rocks not.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
There's some others that are not. Country is not again,
because you're playing to your base sometimes the decisions made
about something outside of politics, and somehow the right has
become everything they don't think, they don't agree with, is woke,
and that too, is the opposite of what they've always been.
Speaker 7 (21:03):
My favorite part of the MAGA response is and again,
if you, if you I do traffic because my algorithm
is sends me both sides, and the common refrain is
I'm not watching the game. And until they change the
halftime performer, and MAGA is convinced that they're going to
(21:24):
with that influence and all these petitions, they're going to
get bad Bunny replaced by Morgan what's his name? The
guy that you like, well, white country guy. Yeah, And
so if you traffic in enough of those circles they
think they're going to get the Super Bowl half halftime
shut down or quote, we're not watching the game. I
(21:46):
dare you to not watch the super Bowl. I just
I dare you to not do that. AJ Brown. Fantasy wise,
I think he did. Okay, I have him and my team.
I think he got a few targets last night. So
that's fine. As far as I'm concerned, it's fine. AJ
Brown did something typical AJ Brown, though he remember there
(22:10):
was that report of a closed door meeting of minds
se questioned by Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts earlier in
the week, Eagles only player AJ Brown says he wasn't
in the meeting. AJ Brown said the meeting didn't happen.
So if you combine everything that AJ Brown has done,
(22:32):
going back to even before the fact that he brought
a book on the sidelines because he like reading during
the games, like you know most guys do, to the
recent thing where he just denies that a meeting happened,
that his the leadership on his team has confirmed happened,
it seems like the time is sticking on AJ Brown
in Philly.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Oh, I don't think there's any question there it is,
you know, and then you look at last week where
it felt like they tried to force the ball to him.
This week, how how how bad their offense looked at times.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Again, I.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Think he makes it through this year. I'm not completely convinced,
right because they are trending in the wrong direction, But
I don't think it's a He's next year. There's like
a It's like a lot of these wide receivers, there's
there's a time in which you got to throw it
away and move on. You know, they spoil a little
bit quicker than they probably should. So Eric Dickerson's comments
(23:33):
to the ones, I mean again, you and I both
like Eric Diggerson, And part of the problem with having
people having opinions is they're going to have opinions you
don't like. But this is like, Eric, tell me you've
been watching Fox News. That tell me you've been watching
Fox News, and for that reason, you're an.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Because we can.
Speaker 7 (23:59):
They Doug Orian Kirkering Orion Kurkering, the reliever for the Phillies,
made maybe the most catastrophic mistake in the history of
Philadelphia sports. Like last night, Mitch Williams was like, oh,
I'm off the hook ground ball to the pitcher. We
talked about it on air. He made the throw to
(24:21):
the plate that nobody was expecting, including his catcher, including
the base runner, and then he was actually I give
him credit for this. He faced the music afterwards. This
is w NBA sound, which is code in the business
for only cell phone microphone. But Orion Kirkering mixes in
a ship and a fuck and his reasoning for throwing
(24:43):
at home.
Speaker 13 (24:45):
Ship off my foot. I mean just kind of once
the pressure got to me, I just thought it was
a faster throw the JT will Cord thrower than trying
to cross body of the price.
Speaker 14 (24:54):
So just throw Yeah, did you? Did you You're done
calling telling you to go to first at all? Or
were you just in the moment that you wasn't even
just in the moment?
Speaker 9 (25:05):
Yeah? Can you can you see j An your pointing
in that moment or is it just kind of looking.
Speaker 13 (25:09):
Up, just kind of looking up?
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Just be ready again.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
Any A lot of guys in energy and one of
the first one's.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
There to move with guys say you that one.
Speaker 11 (25:18):
Just keep your head up.
Speaker 13 (25:19):
It's honest, mistake, just it's baseball. Shit happens. And just
keep your head up, will be good for long time
they come. It's not my fault done, just that opportunity
to score. Had a conversation Rob to Be saying, what
does that say mean to you? Are you know kay
about those guys picking you up so quick means a lot,
shows they care a lot, or.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
Just means everything for sure.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
M I'm sure a lot of guys in there I've
had moments early in their career hear that, you know,
I think kind of remember very.
Speaker 9 (25:49):
Good that they.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
You know, how much do you think you can use
this kind of in the off season to to you.
Speaker 14 (25:56):
Know, for for good for sure.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Yeah, the wall with the test ball for sure.
Speaker 13 (26:02):
But yeah, just kind of keep going with it. Hopefully
it started a long career. Just keep back in my
head of this really fucking socks right now, but.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Hopefully stud guy to face the music and to answer
those questions and to answer calmly and honestly. And you
do feel bad for him, but again, that's sports. Sometimes
guys don't make the plays they should make due to
the pressure of the moment.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
That's it for the In the Moment's podcast.
