Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug gottl Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottle What.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Up, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fucks Butts Radio, I Heart Radio app.
Welcome in. I want to start this podcast in a
weird place. It's called college football and I didn't know it.
(00:31):
I didn't know it until I was looking at an
app that gives me all my scores and I saw
that New Mexico State played Liberty last night, Arkansas State
played South Alabama last night. Florida International played Western Kentucky
last night, and I was just thinking, was last Nay Thursday? Like, no,
(00:54):
it's a Tuesday, It's a Tuesday. And I think this
is It's like a fascinating discussion. I get that TV
makes the world go round, right that so much of
our expenses, everything we do, we just think of, well,
TV will fix it because TV has TV money. But
(01:15):
I would love a cost benefit analysis on if it
actually works for schools at that This is really at
my level in basketball and at that level in college
football from this perspective, like at Western Kentucky they hosted
a home game against Florida ter National last night, Right,
So you mean to tell me that they're going to
(01:36):
make more money when you combined whatever TV deal that
they have that makes them play on a Sunday as
opposed to if they played on a Saturday with no
TV or limited TV. Again, it's a question, it's not
I don't have the answer to it. My answer is
always why they do it? Well, it must make it
more money. It must be about TV. But has that
(01:58):
moment switch? Has that moment changed, especially because now there's
more players into the college college football television game.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Right now there's.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
You have Peacock, you have you know, Peacock and NBC,
which is essentially two different channels, and now they're going
to have NBC Sports as network is coming back. You
have CBS, CBS Sports Network, you have Fox, you have
Fox Sports one all right, you got ESPN, ESBN two,
ESPNU I think still exists. You have all the ESPN
(02:35):
pluses as well. Then you have the possibility of all
the different streaming networks. ABC also has games on TNT
now has the Big Twelve.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
So if you do.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
The math right, and you have one hundred and thirty
some odd teams, and some teams are going to play
on Friday, and most teams will play on Saturday. You
mean to tell me that there's not a television home
for what you're doing. I find that hard to believe.
And like we're getting the Tuesday nights. That's not really
college football. It's just not that's like arena league football,
(03:10):
that's just searching for likes and whatever. But I don't
I don't understand it at all. I don't Tuesday night
is not a place to play college football. It's not
a place to play high high school games wouldn't be
playing on Tuesday night. Why are college games? And I
do think that at times, And I know this is
more conferences, but colleges can lose track of the fact
(03:33):
that the most money you're gonna.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Make is in your stadium, in your stadium.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
And I'm sorry, but wester Kentucky, there's just no way
that you can put as many people in your stadium,
bring as many people to your town. It's not the
same experience. It's not really college footballhen it's on a
Tuesday night. I'm not taking shots at any of these schools.
I'm simply making a bigger point that in our search
for the almighty dollar and for relevance, this is the
route we.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Go be sure to catch live editions of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Let Let's get to the Fox says and.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Now what does the Fox say.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Every day at this time of The Doug Gottlieb Show.
In the Bonus podcast who Played for You? A previous
portion of a Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports One show,
here's Colin Coward talking about the report that Notre Dames
Marcus Freeman is going to be pursued by Penn State
to be the next head coach.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
I saw another story where Penn State is reportedly going
to pursue Notre Dames Marcus Freeman. Freeman's a great coach.
That's the smart move. Kurt Signetti. I don't know, Freeman,
feels like you got twenty years. But here's what's funny
about it. Notre Dame. Just spend the money double Marcus
Freeman's contract, because if I was Penn State, I would
pay fifteen million dollars a year to get Marcus Freeman.
(04:52):
Penn State football last year made two hundred and forty million.
Is the coach worth fifteen million dollars?
Speaker 5 (04:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Yeah, absolutely, as Notre Dame step up and pay it.
I remember when the NIL a few years ago, Nil
Transfer Portal gonna ruin the sport, and I said, if
you want to compete, you'll have to spend money. All
you schools have money. Penn State right now is doing
a seven hundred million dollar Beaver Stadium upgrade. They paid
(05:20):
forty five million dollars to get rid of James Franklin,
and they would pay one hundred million dollars to get
Marcus Freeman. It's just like in life, folks, Wall Street,
Silicon Valley, and the oligarchs. They'll spend four trillion dollars
on AI development over the next decade.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
We talked about this on the radio show, but there's
no reason we can't talk about it here as well.
That the I think the interesting part about Marcus Freeman, right,
who I think is pretty pretty awesome. Right, Marcus Freeman
and Notre Dame beat Penn State three points in the
(06:03):
in the college football playoff semi final, right, see.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Your play you The idea would be your replace.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Marcus Freeman with a younger Marcus Freeman. I mean, if
you replaced James Franklin with a younger Marcus Freeman to
the tune of one hundred million dollars or whatever. I
don't think Marcus Freeman is I don't think will they
pursue him, Like, yeah, you kick the tires. But Matt
Rule makes all the sense in the world's friends of
(06:28):
the ad. He went there. Everybody thinks he's a good coach,
a good builder. You know, I Marcus Rereeman's not leaving
Notre Dame for Penn State. That one feels like his
representatives made sure that everybody knows that they're going after
him so that he can get a hefty pay raise,
which you will what she will. Here's Brady Quinn talking
(06:50):
about arch Manning.
Speaker 6 (06:52):
You know what's tough about this is, you know, he
kind of carries the flag for the for the a
lot of quarterbacks who are draft eligible and who are
talked about this, And I'll be honest, his throwing motion
has not looked the same to me this year than
it did last year. So I don't know if mechanically
he's doing something different, or he did something different in
(07:13):
the offseason. I don't know if it's due to an
injuries playing through I'm not sure what it is, but
his arm slot is a lot lower than what it
was last year for the couple of starts he made
and during the times I saw him out there.
Speaker 7 (07:28):
So I'm not sure what to make.
Speaker 8 (07:31):
So is it just coincidental that all these quarterbacks who
were top prospects going into the season have struggled, or
is this maybe people have to reconsider not only preseason
rankings from a team to team standpoint, but where you
stack these players going into the year.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
Dude, here's the thing.
Speaker 7 (07:50):
It's tough in the media business because you got to
say like these outlandish things for things to go viral
or for people to pay attention, and so there's people
who really want to go out there on a limb.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah. Again, I don't know if it's a shoulder injury.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
I don't know if it's a flaw in his delivery
that he's developed. But I do think that we can
all see that. Here's Kirk kurb Street talking to Dan
Patrick about why so many young quarterbacks have struggled in
the NFL.
Speaker 9 (08:17):
I think what's happened in the last pray fifteen years
is quarterbacks are advancing at a record pace off away
from the lights and the cameras as far as training,
Like if you look at a tenth grade quarterback that's
at an elite level today and you go back to
the nineties or the early two thousands, it's night and
(08:39):
day with the development of these middle school and high
school quarterbacks, and then you eventually take them into college
and the NFL doing college for the last thirty years
and watching the changes just at that level, forget the NFL,
you know, we started to see if you go back
to like you're and I era, it was more eye
formation and more tradition what you would think of football.
(09:02):
And then Joe Tiller came around, and Rich Rodriguez came around,
and Chip Kelly came around, and all of a sudden,
we started to see teams go really fast, and we're like,
what's going on with all this speed? And you see
signs on the sideline just Daffy Duck or Dan Patrick
or whatever it might be, whatever the play might be,
no one's huddling. So you just keep going down that path.
(09:25):
That becomes instead of outliers like Chip and Rich Rodriguez,
it becomes the norm. So what's the downside to that?
The downside to that is you don't have quarterbacks anymore
that are learning how to run an offense, getting down
on a knee and looking up to ten guys in
their face and calling a play and getting ready to
read structures of defenses.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, I mean, I think all of that. We're not
not only a we're not preparing quarterbacks for the NFL.
We don't have the time to. And you don't have
guys that stay three or four years in a system,
and those systems aren't designed for it as well. Are
not pro style symptoms systems. I think those are super
astute points by a good friend of mine, Kirk Kirk Street.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
That's what the buck said.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Let's find out who What's annoying? Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
And now it's your annoying, Hey, Doug.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
I want to I just want to close the loop
on something. Close the loop on my rant from yesterday
that included the TBS broadcast team of Brian Anderson, and
Ron Darling and Jeff Frankcoor and their team of misfits
in the production truck. They didn't cover to Hernandez's role
(10:57):
in the wild double play. They didn't cover it during
the game, after the play, and the innings after the play,
and that drew the ire of my criticism, the point
of my ire. So last night, of course, of course
the producers were like, we missed it, so we need
to overcover it. A day later they started to talk
(11:19):
about how Teo screwed up, how Dave Roberts acknowledged that
Teo screwed up, and that Teo himself said I did
it and I won't do it again. It would have
been really nice if, in the moment while your viewers
are confused about why we had the first eight six'
to two force play in the history of, baseball it
(11:40):
would have been nice to hear something other than, wow
that was.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Crazy, YEAH i don't. Know do you know who's producing
it the?
Speaker 5 (11:48):
GAME i have no.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Idea, No, YEAH i MEAN i. WOULD i completely.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Agree they're trying to make up for the fact that
they didn't cover something in real, time and that's impossible to,
do and that is a that is definitely a production era.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
ERROR i would have like respected it If Brian ashten was,
like you know, what we apologize we didn't give this
enough attention last, night and here it. Is but, no
they just kind of covered it as.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
If, YEAH i think, Again brian is, Super he's one
of these. Guys he is super super team oriented and
doesn't want to throw anybody under the, bus doesn't want
the crew to get throw under the. Bus it doesn't
make it, Right BUT i, AGAIN i JUST i think
that though you're, right it's an, easy it's a smart
(12:34):
way to do, it it's not generally the way it's done in.
Television nobody says anything bad, happened because then that brings
attention to the fact that they didn't cover, it you,
know because you're making the assumption everybody saw the.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Play they.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Didn't here's a crazy, play and let's properly cover, it
even though we didn't the night.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
Before you're right and me and Maybe i'm being selfish because.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
No and, LOOK i can tell You i've tried to
do WHAT i thought was the right thing and not
throw anybody in the, bus but, say, hey like we
all screwed.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Up.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Whatever it just some people can take it the wrong,
way and it's just that how it's. DONE i DON'T
i don't know any other way to explain. It i'm
not saying it's. Right i'm just saying that sounds.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Done So Aaron glenn we spent the last couple of
days talking about kind of his missteps with The New york.
Media and Then Ben johnson is in market size number
three two Former lions assistant. COACHES i Think Ben johnson
has had two times this season when he has said
(13:32):
something either in the heat of the game or right
after the, game that he's taken. Back and then he
was doing his radio hit yesterday morning and he was
asked About Troy, aikman who was covering the game On monday,
night implying or just saying that The bears kind of
got lucky with this, one because if you, remember The
commanders had a very a late fumble that Gave Caleb
(13:57):
williams and the team a chance to. Win so. Benj
jhnson was asked About Troy aikman's characterization that there was
luck involved in a.
Speaker 10 (14:04):
Win it sounded like from that game the other, night
a few people weren't partickularly pleased with how we're winning right.
Now so that's THE i woke up this morning and you,
know my kids were watching the second half before, school
and SO i heard some of the. Commentary but, listen
in this, league anyway you can find a way to.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
WIN i would JUST i. Would this is WHAT i
would say to. Him this is WHAT i would. Say
you know, what there is luck. Involved we got a
lot to clean up, still and we do feel fortunate
with that we. Won BUT i think we're on on
a you, know we're on good track right now and
we'll be okay as opposed to some people had an
issue with the way we're. Winning this Is Troy. Yekman
(14:42):
he's A hall Of. Famer he's probably the best lead
analyst in the. GAME i just think you could be
a little bit more respectful with that.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Answer, yeah it's it's a weird.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
THING i it feels like one of those answers that
you get a bunch of atta boys In chicago and
from your front off and whenever you, know somebody heard
it that You're people make the assumption that lucky means
you're not, good and like those two things are not
separate and distinct from each. Other you can create your own.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Luck you.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Can good teams have a tendency to be more lucky
than bad, teams AND i don't think you have to
shy away from. It i've never understood shying away from
luck before the. Game when you shake hands with, somebody
what do you always, say, well good? Luck, Okay but
then they have good, Luck you're, like, yeah that wasn't
a part of. It doesn't take away from what you're
doing as a, coach what players are doing to say
(15:36):
they were a little. Lucky you AND i, Agree and
it is annoying that that that the false bravado is
seen as a cool.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
THING i saw. THIS i saw this on AND i
want to bring it up on it BECAUSE i want
to be consistent in this podcast with with my. Criticism
The jaguars are saying that they Want Travis hunter to
be more involved in the. Offense scheming in open is
part of. It number. One our job as an offensive
staff is to make sure we're putting him in the
(16:05):
progression and putting him in the position to be number
one a little bit more often in some. Ways and
AGAIN i think we're doing kind of mental gymnastics. HERE
i think the marketing side of The jaguars is, like
we trade it up to take this super talent both,
ways super Talent why isn't he being Super he's being
(16:26):
pretty pedestrian And Liam cohen is forced to ask answer
questions like. THIS i just want to be consistent in.
THIS i don't think he's going to be successful at.
BOTH i think he's going to be average at, both
and that's not good. Enough just choose one and be
really good at, It that's ALL i want to.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Say, YEAH i hear, you and there's part of me
that agrees with, you and the part of me that.
Disagrees you CAN i let me pitch you on a disagreement,
here taste. Two what if his superpower is that he's
just really good at, Both he's not created. Either what
if that's actually and that though you think of a
(17:05):
number one pick as being a potential, superstar what if
a number one pick was just a, good, solid high quality,
receiver a, good, solid high quality defensive back at the
end of the.
Speaker 5 (17:16):
Day, yeah if he, could if he could reach both
of those, levels, yes But i'm questioning the validity of, That,
LIKE i think he's going to be average or below
that at. Both if he keeps doing.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Both, well then He if he, does then he will
Be if he's still, average then he'll be a. Bust
BUT i do think there's something to be said when
there's no absolute number one overall pick that that you
need or, whatever you, know whatever draft pick he, would
he can go number one. Overall Cam wore, did but
that if you have the choice between somebody who maybe
(17:49):
could be a star and somebody who could be maybe a,
star maybe really good at two offense and, defense you
probably take. That AND i actually think that's what he.
IS i don't think he's a. SUPERSTAR i think he's
got a chance to be a really good boardline star
on defense and a good solid player on.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Offense so the choices today are THE tbs broadcast, Crew Ben,
johnson and the facade that they're going to have a
great two way player In Travis.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Hummer, Oh i'm gonna Go Ben. JOHNSON i just that
false bravado as a coach and taking a, shot and
an analyst who says what we're all thinking and is
really giving a balanced, broadcast and And Troy. Aikman, yeah that's.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
Why are we doing? This because we Can.
Speaker 5 (18:41):
DOUG nba preseason is in full. Swing one of the
one of the best parts about THE nba being in
season is that we get to Hear Pat beverly on this.
Program he is very interesting to listen, to and a
lot of it has to do with the way he
words things and the way he says. Things he's very
interesting and for the sake of our, podcast he dropped
(19:03):
a lot of f. Bombs he's talking About Russell westbrook.
Here now he recorded this on this podcast before it
was reported That westbrook has signed with The kings. Today
so this Is Pat beverly talking About Russell. Westbrook it's
fucked that will happen To.
Speaker 11 (19:17):
Russ bro On, God it's fucked that will happen To
russ And russ got a bad take because of That lakers.
Team that's the, Truth, bro that's the. Truth you talked
to Telud tlude did an interview With.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
Motherfuckers.
Speaker 8 (19:27):
MOTHERFUCKER i Love.
Speaker 11 (19:28):
Russ ever Since russ left The, Lakers, bro he's been
on the.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
Minimum.
Speaker 11 (19:31):
Bro we've never seen this. Ever we've never seen a
player who's been THE, mvp who's impacted the, game who
they call them names and tell me he can't, shoot
go to the playoff shoot forty percent with The clippers
the very next, year, right take a less domeanion and
roll with The, lakers take a Less domanian and roll
with The. Clippers he's been a sixth man ever since
(19:52):
he's left The. Lakers he's a starting point guard in THE.
Nba he's arguably one of the top three point guards
to ever play the. Game can you tell me this
man can't get on the. Team all because he's because he's,
Passionate all because he he stretches with the team every
single fucking, Practice all because if it's a team out
and he's there all the. Time all, because if you
(20:12):
talk to anyone around the, League russ is the best
team MAN i ever. HAD i talked To Paul, GEORGE
ip you A, pat you go Love, Russ Austin, Reees, Russell.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Rustbrooks one the.
Speaker 11 (20:20):
Best of the, teammates but one of the best Teammates i've.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Had what the fuck are we talking?
Speaker 11 (20:23):
About why isn't this man on the?
Speaker 3 (20:24):
TEAM i love the energy to.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
IT i agree with him that The lakers. THING i
don't think The lakers thing was all. Him it was all.
THEM i think a good portion was. Him as you guys,
KNOW i have lots of friends in That lakers, organization
and they genuinely thought he was a, turn and he
doesn't have.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
The greatest reputation everywhere he.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Goes and because he can't, shoot it's really. Hard and,
yes he has improved his, shooting especially his quarter, three
which makes you have to guard. Him my guess would
be that that if you look at all those, teams
did they get better or worse When russ? Left are
they better or worse when he got?
Speaker 3 (21:07):
There?
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Better worse they? Left all you kind of got to?
Know and what what is he holding out?
Speaker 3 (21:14):
For? Financially what is he holding out? For role?
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Wise Russell westbrook is in that weird spot That Allen
iverson was, in where you've been AN, Mvp you've been
a dominant.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Player you can still.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Play, basketball but can you play basketball within the role
that your age and style of play? Determines AND i
don't know the answer to. THAT i Don't why couldn't
play it for? You because we. Can't that's it for
the Ind Vernon bonus. Podcast check out the radio show
