Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show years in
the Bonus with Doug gottli WHOA.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What Doug Gottlieb Show in the Bonus sucks? Sports radio?
I heart radio app So there's a lot of things
that I miss about the old days. Bless you to
Dan Byer, who's sneezing in studio. A lot of things

(00:32):
I miss about the old days, right, I do think
nineties movies were kind of better, Nineties sitcoms were kind
of better, and college football in the nineties felt better. Now,
I know what you're saying to yourself, Doug. The ratings
continue to grow. People love this brand of college football.

(00:55):
My counter argument to that would be, well, you're right,
haven't the ratings in the NFL? So I think people
just love football. It's become our America's current time if
it's not our pastime. So there's no control group to
see whether not the ratings would go grow in college
football if there was no playoff expansion or if there

(01:16):
was no conference re alignment. That's a real thing. If
we went back to the old PAC twelve, Big eight pack,
ten pack ten, Big eight, Big ten acc SEC days,
would the ratings not still be great. I think the
answer is yes, And honestly, I think you'd have a
much clearer picture of what a college football playoff should

(01:38):
look like because all you got to do is take
champions up, the ACC, the Big Ten, the SEC, the
PAC twelve, the Big eight like there's five, and then
you can pick the rest of the field much more easily.
This way makes it more difficult, more challenging, and more
quality teams get left out. But I will say there
is one thing that I don't know if they have anymore,

(02:01):
and maybe Buyer could help me and tell me. We
talked about it some of the radio show. Do you
guys remember the Orange Bowl?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Right?

Speaker 2 (02:09):
The Orange Bowl? Every year seemed to have Oklahoma or
Nebraska take on Miami and on New Year's Eve, even
though the game was on New Year's Day, because the
Orange Bowl was the last get wasn't the last game
of the day usually, right? The Rose Bowl was afternoon
Pacific Coast time, early evening East Coast time, and then
the Orange Bowl was last. But the night before, on

(02:32):
New Year's Eve night, there was the Orange Bowl Parade,
which was everything everything that represents Florida. Right, it's a
copy of everything cool in California. It was just a parade,
and somehow Disney got involved and whatever, but it was like, hey,
it was the mcdowells to Rose Bull being McDonald's. And

(02:54):
so while I miss everything of the nineties and I'm
starting to get old and starting to reminisce and go,
you know, oh, thanks for better back in the day,
the Orange Bowl Parade is not one of them.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Let's Get the Fox Says and now every day that time.
In the Voters podcast played for your previous version of
Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports One Show, here's Colin Kellard
talking about Jalen Hurts.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
Nick Serianni is the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. They're
in a losing streak and Jalen Hurts is struggling, and
Nick Sarianni on WIP Radio in Philadelphia was asked about
replacing him.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Is there a possibility later this season if he continues
to struggle, that you can make a change at the quarterbacks?

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Bock No, I think that's ridiculous, you know, I think,
you know, Jalen Hurts. I know every time I go
out in that field with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback,
we have a chance to win the game. And that's
you know, that's that's something that's improven. Every time I
walk on that field and Jalen Hurts as a starting quarterback,

(04:05):
I have so much confidence that we can win every game,
in any game that we play and that we're in.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, except for the last three or four, which you
keep losing. The truth is, the more Jalen Hurts throws
the worst Philadelphia is. Those are the facts. If he
throws over thirty times, they're not very good.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah. Again, that doesn't mean that the Eagles just won the
super Bowl. Just won the super Bowl. So what you
say privately what you say publicly are two very very
different things. Of Course, I knew that, but I'm learning
it again and getting reestablished as a head coach. And
I'm sure Nick Sirianni is frustrated at times with Jalen

(04:53):
Hurts play decision making, throwing, but he's been to two
Super Bowls with him, He's won a super Bowl with him,
and it's not like they're terrible this year they're not
as good offensively. I also I think they have to
run him more, not throw him as much. That part
I would agree with. But the idea that you'd ever
replace him at this point in the season, I do
think is laughable. I'm with Sirianni on that one. Here's

(05:16):
Dan Patrick talking about the Colts signing Philip Rivers.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
The Colts signing Philip Rivers to the practice squad. Now
he's a semi finalist for the Hall of Fame this year. Now,
I don't think he's a first battlet Hall of Famer.
But I'm also wondering about this. Once he gets on
the roster, he doesn't have to play in a game.
Once he's officially on the roster, then they start the
clock again. He won't be eligible until twenty thirty one.

(05:40):
Isn't there another quarterback somewhere in the world who might
be a little better than Philip Rivers. Now, I understand
that he understands the offense. He's in contact with Shane
Stike and the head coach on a weekly basis. I
understand all of that. Are you trying to tell me
that there's not another quarterback who might be just a

(06:00):
better option? And a little younger than Philip Rivers.

Speaker 6 (06:04):
Just a thought.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Uh yeah, look, I think that I don't think people
understand at this time. No, there's no other options. He
knows the offense call whether he plays or doesn't play.
First of all, like a good portion of playing quarterback
in the NFL is just knowledge of system, of calls,

(06:31):
of checkdowns, whatever, It's just a reality to it. Just
get rid of the ball quick. And I don't know
if the intent is to play Philip Rivers, but having
him there for anybody who does play is an amazing,
amazing assistant coach without hiring assistant coach. And my guess
is he can't play long term, but for a game

(06:51):
he'd probably be fine. Here's Brady Quinn talking about the
relationship between the ACC and Notre Dame.

Speaker 7 (06:57):
The one thing that gets a little bit where the
water gets a little muddied, is like you have a
partial affiliation. So even though it's twenty four of the sports,
you're also playing five games a year that are against
the ACC, and the ACC schedules that like Notre Dame
meson not have at in control over which five those are.
There's a lot of people don't understand how the scheduling
comes about for Notre Dame. That's part of that. A

(07:19):
lot of people, by the way, are like, oh, the
ACC saved Notre Dame during COVID, and there's some truth
to that as far as what that schedule was going
to look like for them because of how various conferences
handled COVID. I will remind people too though, the one
year they are part of a conference, they swept the
regular season and they played the conference championship game lost
to Clemson. But still like, if people wanted to join

(07:43):
a conference, that's fine. I think Notre Dame is going
to compare favorably versus most they would have in the
playoff this year versus SEC opponents. But I think the
greater thing that I would draw or point to that
ultimately led to the frustration for Notre Dame fans not
getting the playoff at least in regards to the ACC,
was the way they went about determining who played the

(08:05):
conference championship game. That should be the same for every
power for conference.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah, again, I still think we're getting caught in the weeds.
Notre Dame was bitter. They didn't understand why the ACC was.
They felt like picking on them, and they have every
right to feel that way they do. I don't agree
with Brett, you or Mark and I, but I also
think obviously Brady is a Notre Dame malam a former

(08:34):
Notre Dame football player. Let's not talk like it's still
woe as me. And yes, they joined the league, but
the league that makes sense for them has always been
the Big Ten. But they haven't wanted to join it,
and they have every right not to, and they've been
able to financially be in a great spot without joining one.
I don't think this makes it because of next year's

(08:56):
Notre Dame exception rule. I don't think they'll ever join
a compons. That's what the Fox said.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
I say. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Let's find out who What's annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
And now it's your annoying, Doug.

Speaker 6 (09:27):
You know how the news cycle works, right, It's not
like a twenty fourth hour thing. It's like hour by
hour in our business. So the big news a couple
hours ago was that Philip Rivers is going to be
number seventeen, So I know that there's like a you know,
millennials change the word literally, so that that kind of
fucked it for the rest of us. But the traditional

(09:49):
use of the word literally Philip Rivers has added insult
to injury. Daniel Jones literally ruptured achilles, his achilles. He's out.
Three days later, some old guy comes in and takes
his number, and most of Twitter, I've noticed is kind

(10:10):
of bogged down on the rules of this, like how
could this happen? And I guess there's like small print
in the rules that if somebody's off the fifty three
man roster or on the ir their number could be used.
You could use two numbers on the same team. Given that,
that whole thing just bores the shit out of me.
I think it's a gesture that I have an issue with, Like,

(10:32):
why would ever take the number of the guy that
just had the position and had his season ruined? I thought,
I think it's just it's kind of shitty. I've always
liked Philip as a person, but like, I don't care
if the rules allow it, I'd why take that number?
Just take another number. You're only going to be in
the on the team for what three weeks? I don't know.
It just seems kind of shitty to me.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Wasn't he on the Colts before seventeen? Before?

Speaker 6 (11:02):
I've always had seventeen. I don't know if he was
seventeen on the.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Cold No, he was, but he was on the cold
side two years ago, right, my misremembering.

Speaker 6 (11:11):
It was like five years ago. You can't go in
the Hall of Fame, I think, unless is it that
long ago?

Speaker 2 (11:15):
My goodness, Yeah, I mean it is kind of what's done.
It is a number he's synonymous with. I'm not as
bothered by it. It can be a bit of a
dick move, but I don't I do think that when
you're even if he doesn't become a Hall of Famer,
I think he will. But you're a Hall of Fame
level player and you have a number you're synonymous with,

(11:37):
you get to get that, even for a short period
of time. So I don't think it's the coolest move.
But I don't think it's that big a dick move.
Who else?

Speaker 6 (11:44):
I just think that it literally as insults injury and
you have a feeling that Daniel Jones is going to
say all the right things about it. I have a
feeling he will, because that's what Daniel Jones does. He
is the antithesis of controversy. He's the antithesis of interesting.
So he's gonna be like, yeah, you know, he's a

(12:06):
Hall of Famer, he's coming in, he's my number. But
I think deep down inside, he's like, that's kind of
a bullshit move. But anyways, Mad Dog Russo had this
video out yesterday where he's shooting kind of like a
semi half quarter or something. And what annoys me about
that viral video And they're having a lot of fun

(12:26):
with it today on first Taking stuff and I saw
you retweet it. I think your reference was the fifty
cent first pitch. This is what I'm annoyed by because, like,
it's okay if a celebrity does it, it's okay if
like former athletes from other sports do it, But Mad

(12:48):
Dog Russo is painting all of us with a really
shitty brush hair. Because the common thought among athletes is
that these media types can't have an opinion about sports
because they don't play sports. And anyone who watches how
unathletic Mad Dog was in this video that confirms that,

(13:12):
That confirms that stereotype. How could you possibly talk about
sports and have us take you serious when you obviously
just picked up a basketball a second before you took
that shot.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
It's a terrible look. It's a holy cow. And as
you know, I have a great amount of respect for
Mad Dog because without him, I don't know how reasonable
it is for me to have my career like he
and the Dog. Mad Dog and Francessa they were New

(13:48):
York sports radio and they created this cottish industry that
we've been able to. You know, I'm able to put
my kids through college because of But yeah, that does
a lot of damage. That does more harm to his
sports takes than the ACC's tweets and running in perpetuity

(14:08):
Miami versus Notre Dame from earlier this year on the
ACC network. I think it does more harm, you know,
than anything done in terms of football, of real sports whatever,
like the Notre Dame relationship with the ACC. That harm

(14:30):
not as bad as the harm that's been done to
Mad Dog. Russo's sports takes because he looked so unathletic,
so unathletic. He's also old. He's also older than you think.
But it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 6 (14:42):
I'm sure. My favorite part, if you break it down,
I think a lot of people are kind of getting
caught up on the form and how the ball probably
went ten feet. But though after he's done, if you
look closely enough, he does this, he does this weird

(15:03):
like follow through and then it's almost like he pulled
a muscle and he's just he is so unathletic. I
didn't know people could be that unathletic. Yeah, but that's
a tough one. So so Asia Wilson. We found out
yesterday that Time magazine made her the Athlete of the Year,
athlete both genders of the year. And then you do

(15:26):
a little bit more digging and you're like, oh, Time
Magazine took a lot of shit for putting Caitlin Clark there,
and this is kind of a make good and it
makes it's just stupid. As we said on the radio yesterday,
we run a We do a twenty four to seven
sports network, and the number of times Asia Wilson's name
has been named on this network is probably is much

(15:48):
less than fifty. She is almost never talked about, and
that tells you how relevant she is. So how could
she possibly be the athlete of the Year. So she
did an interview with Times Sean Gregory and these are
some These are just some amazing quotes talks about Caitlin Clark,

(16:09):
the Caitlin Clark popularity of the w n b A.
It wasn't a hit at me because and she's talking
about time picking kentlyn Clark a year ago. I'm gonna
do what I do regardless. I'm gonna win this MVP.
I'm gonna win the gold medal. Y'all can't shake my resume.
It was more so that let's not lose the recipe,

(16:31):
let's not lose the history. It was a race for
a minute. And I don't like that because we have
tons of women that have been through the grimiest of
grimy things to get this league to where it is today.
I don't know where the ignorance begins here or the
like narcissism ends and begins like so so Caitlyn Clark's

(16:55):
brought popularity to the sport and he erased the moment.
He it erased a bit of history, when in fact,
this collective bargaining agreement that is going on right now,
the collective bargaining negotiation, has everything to do with Caitlin
Clark's impact on your sport. Do you really think you
would have leverage to make more money if she didn't

(17:17):
exist this let's not lose the recipe because other women
have been through the grimiest of the grime. So at
one side of her mouth, she's saying, I just want
this to go back to this niche league that nobody
paid attention to where I could be the best player.
And then the other thing is they're going to be
negotiating hard for more money and what comes with all

(17:39):
that in this offseason. So I don't know where the
ignorance begins and ends in this comment here.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
I think, well Time Magazine is ignorant. I don't know
if she's ignorant or arrogant or what she is, but
none of it makes any sense. Kaitlin Clark had a
legit argument be a after the Year because she got
people watching and enjoying women's basketball at the collegiate in
pro level and she was out of a player, but

(18:08):
none of it made any sense now in terms of
Asia Wilson, So I yeah, I just she just sounds
and feels better to me, and you shouldn't be better
when you win After the Year award. So Dog or
Philip Rivers wanting number seventeen, even though he may not play.

(18:30):
I think mad Dog Russo is annoying because most people
don't know the history of Mike and the mad Dog.
Most people have only seen him on ESPN. Some have
seen him on the MLB network, and I would say
all of us who have seen him expected him to
be just athletic, but just small, and he's both. And

(18:57):
it does damage to anybody's credibility. Who speaks into a microphone?
Who wasn't a collegiate athlete a professional athlete? Because we
all because people assume that's what everybody's like, and maybe
the right but for the short time, Uh, Matt dow Grusso,
why are.

Speaker 1 (19:16):
We doing this because we can.

Speaker 6 (19:23):
So? Who is the who's the White Warriors player that
is having a great season. I saw this over the
weekend and it was just so a character for Steve Kerr.
But I want to get the guy right. I want
to say he's like a guard Pat Spencer. I don't
know what his background.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
At Spencer he was Pat Spencer was a lacrosse player
in college and uh then he played to they moved
to basketball and you know, undrafted, worked his way into
the NBA, and he's he's a stud. He was a
great lacrosse player in college before playing basketball in college

(20:07):
and ultimately making into the NBA. He played lacrosse at
Loyola of Maryland from twenty sixteen to twenty nineteen, played
at Northwestern for a year, and then he went to
Germany for a year, was in the G League for
I think three years, and has been on the Warriors
since last year.

Speaker 6 (20:25):
So Pat Spencer is having a really good year for
this team. He's a little too hairy for me. Like
he he's kind of a throw He wears like the
eighties shorts a little too tight, and then he's got
very hairy wegs. He's a real throwback. But this was
totally out of character for Steve Kerr, and I like it.

Speaker 8 (20:44):
He's really improved his jump shot. I mean, that's the
big thing he's Last year he would turn down a
lot of threes, drive in, shoot a lot of floaters,
and he's never going to be stuff, but he's a
threat out there, and that's what it takes. You have
to be a threat from the line to be able
to pull the defense out. And I just think the
shot quality now that we're getting with him on the

(21:05):
floor is way better than it was the last.

Speaker 7 (21:08):
Couple of years.

Speaker 8 (21:09):
And then I think the other thing is that his
coach realized that Pat is that motherfucker.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
You know. I think it's awesome, awesome. The term motherfucker
is a badge of courage, a badge of honor, and
I love it when it's appropriately used. Why I can
play for you because we can. That's it for the
ind The Bonus Podcast. I got the radio show every
day three to five Easter from Total two Pacific, Fox
