Fox Sports Radio. I hope you are having a spectacular,
spectacular day. What a crazy I needed basketball? Oh in
the craziest things you've ever seen, Craziest things you've ever seen.
(00:48):
I give you last night or yesterday afternoon in the NBA,
the Lakers disaster, the Celtics season, the gold Stay Warriors
playing through injury with Kevin Durant and finding a way
to beat the Houston Rockets. And I'd just like to
be the New York Knicks. Potentially you're top two guys.
(01:10):
Kyrie Irvin comes in showing he's clearly uh not a leader,
and and Kevin Durant possibly coming in hobbled. If you
get those two. The Gotlip Shows brought to you by Farmers.
At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we know how

(01:35):
well listen. I I think that often times, oftentimes, UM,
we look at narratives the wrong way, or we look
at stories the wrong way. UM. In many ways, we
look at the Celtics series against the Milwaukee Bucks and
(01:56):
it becomes a referendum on Kyrie of beings, leadership or
lack thereof. That that that is fairly accurate, but it
should be pointed out that the Milwaukee Bucks are the
best record in the regular season, they had the best
defense in the regular season, and they've been the best
defensive team in the playoffs. And to say they made
some adjustments after Game one and they, I mean just
(02:18):
disemboweled the Boston Celtics. Those weren't games and you go like, well,
you know, if this, if this one foul wasn't called,
Like I could go back in every one of these
Warriors Rockets games and I could make the case the
other team could have won. Doesn't mean that the Rockets
outplayed the Warriors in Game one, or that the Warriors
(02:38):
outplayed the Rockets in Game four, they did not, but
both teams had shots in those games. How even Game three,
the overtime game, the overtime game where the Warriors lose.
In Game three, Kevin Durant had the ball thirty eight
seconds to go. If he runs the two for what
(02:59):
goes to for one or if he makes the pull
up jump shot with sixteen seconds to go, he didn't.
He didn't. Last night ends the series. One play here
that wasn't what happened with the Celtics. So while everything
today is about Kyrie, why isn't any of it about Milwaukee? Well,
(03:19):
everything in the Philadelphia seventy six series is about Ben
Simmons and Joel Embiat. How come it's not about Toronto
Raptors and the Kua and Quiet Letard and even in
the sixers series, so much of what we're paying attention
to is Damian Lillard. It's kind of a mess compared
to how he was playing previously and missing pree throws.
Damian Lillard and yokis just but there are other factors,
(03:43):
other players, other interesting parts to it, which is how
I look at the series between the Warriors and the Rockets,
maybe differently than everybody else. Here's Charles Barkley. After the
game member Kevin Durant got hurt. We're told it's a
calf injury, a calf strain. Steve Curis said, I'm not
gonna mess around. William just gonna tell you he ain't
(04:03):
playing in game six. Here's Charles Barkley. There was ain't
got no chance of winning without Kevin Durant series, this
series or any other series. Kevin Durant made them unbeatable.
They are not gonna can't win the series. They they're
not gonna beat the Rockets. They're not gonna beat the
Rockets without k D. And they're not gonna be Portland
(04:25):
or Denver. That's how important he is. Uh. He made
them a dynasty. Let's don't sleep on that. People said
what they wanted one they did they was terrific and
they want something to They lost that series, but that
was like five years ago. People act like that was
two years ago. They did not become a juggernaut until
(04:46):
k D got there. Everybody who knows the basketball, he's
the guy who made them a dynasty. They're not gonna
beat the Rockets without k D. Um I tend to
agree I mean, look, in reality, they're not gonna beat
the They wouldn't beat the Rockets four out of seven
without k D. And I don't know if they can
beat the Rockets one out of two at home. The
(05:08):
Rockets fully healthy in the Warriors not. But let me
just tell you something that you haven't heard anywhere else.
I haven't heard and and in fairness, I haven't listened
to a ton of sports radio shows, but I know
how these things go. I don't believe anybody else has
pointed this out. What does it say about the Rockets
if they can't beat the Warriors and the Warriors are
down two starters, Remember this is that you're not not
(05:30):
just down two starters, you're down DeMarcus Cousins, who doesn't
really have a backup, right, Andrew Bogut? And I heard
Shack on his on his feed talking about why wasn't
it wasn't Andrew Bogett playing. You can't Andrew bo can't
play in this series. Nobody can guard zero people eat
(05:52):
can guarden this series. That would be an epic and
complete disaster. It wasn't a good edition when he played
in the last series. Um So DeMarcus Cousins has no backup.
This team has a very limited bench, and you're without
Kevin Durant. Can you imagine if the Rockets don't win
(06:13):
this series. It's an indictment on the Rockets. Sure, we
can celebrate the toughness of a champion, and everything Steve
Kerr said that we can't play for you about his
guys is in fact true. There was an exceptional amount
of toughness and it does speak to the greatness of
(06:35):
Steph Curry into Clay Thompson if they can carry this
team through injury. But they're not missing one, they're missing
two starters on a front loaded team. Like think about
that for a second. On a front loaded team. You're
missing two starters against a fully healthy Houston Rockets team
(06:57):
that went to seven games last year. And look how
everybody talked about Chris Paul not playing, and that was fine.
Last year. The Warriors didn't have Andrea Goodala and they're
just about the same guy used to be stars and
now somewhat role players. Obviously Chris Paul more in the tank,
but not so much more in the tank. You can't
beat the Warriors without cousins and without k d Right,
(07:20):
like your reb Coo and Livingston like child Leviston physically
can't play more than twenty minutes a game. Body won't
hold up. And your rebco he's a five or ten
minute a game guy. Jordan Bell buried on the bench
with dog with a bone. Quinn Cook hasn't taken off
his sweats this this uh, this series, has not taken
(07:42):
off the sweats. If the Rockets can't win this thing,
it's an indictment on everything they've been trying to build for.
They are fully healthy and all they gotta do is
win two games against the depleted team. If you can't
get that, I don't want to hear anything more about
Houston and their analytics and this and that you don't
(08:05):
get a better shot, whether it's last night or the
next two nights. Because Barkley said it on paper, there's
no way, no way, a team that starts Steph and
Clay and Cavan Looney and Andrea Goudala and probably your
rebco should beat the Houston Rockets at full strength. No way.
(08:30):
But you know what, it's probably gonna happen because whether
it's pressure or matchups or belief or just Steph and
Clay getting a chance to eat shoot the ball thirty
times in the math telling you that it's going to
go in. It feels like that's what happens. Oh, and
(08:51):
then there's Chris Paul, who's a shell of his former self.
He hen't you know, he can't make a shot, can't
get bive. Everybody plays him to go to his right,
refuses to go to his left. Chris Paul has become
an ultimate flop artist, right, Like, there's two things that happened.
(09:13):
Once you can't play when you start flopping, until you
start fighting, and both the truth with Chris Paul, and
he was great, but he's also a great pick and
role player, and they very barely run any pick and roll.
He was three from fourteen over six from three and
(09:33):
apparently a healthy and the best thing that he did
was flop last night when he ran over Draymond Green
and it got Draymond Green and technical foul, which you
know is Draymond classic, super smart guys, super smart player,
really really dumb play. And we're looking at this from
the wrong perspective. We're looking at the Celtics Bucks and all,
(09:55):
we're looking at his Celtics. We're looking Sixers, Raptors and
all we're looking at his sixers. We look at the
Warriors and their win last night against the Rockets. To me,
it's an indictment on the Rockets more so than some
celebration about the greatness of the of the Warriors. So
(10:16):
how I feel about it at Gottlieb Show is in
fact the Twitter handle that's at Gottlieb Show. Michael Lee
from the Athletic joins the show. Next, does he think
the Warriors can still win the series? Plus what now
for the Celtics. That's uff coming next. But first, guys,

Fox Sports Radio Music. You stayed up watch the game
last night, didn't you? But you Ramos, you stay up
watch the game? I did. I did watch the game. Yes?
Did you think that was it? Were you influenced by
Reggie Miller? Or did you legit think? Uh? Kevin Durant
popped as Achilles tendant. I was probably influenced to tad
by Reggie Miller, said yes, but I did look like
(12:47):
he was injured. I didn't think about the Achilles until
he mentioned, like, oh, that's the same looks like Kobe
out there. Yeah, Like obviously, I'm I'm also a part
of it is how I think human nature is, is
that I I I hope for the best. I don't
want an injury. And I was just sitting there going
maybe it's a cramp, Maybe it's cramp. It turns out
(13:09):
to be some sort of calf strain or calf sprain,
which means really some sort of terror of the calf.
We just don't know how severe it is. And I
don't even know if they know how severe it is
untill they get the m R I today and how
he feels today. Um. I also think that you have
if you've ever seen Kevin Durant in person, you know
that his legs are about as thin as any legs
(13:32):
you have ever laid eyes on. And so it's reasonable
to consider that you don't know where the calf begins
and ends. You know, you just don't. I got no
idea what the calf begins and ends none, Um, But
I I was holding my breath. But I did feel like,
all right, for for one game, they can finish this
(13:54):
thing up, because the energy in the building was amazing,
and I felt like Staff even though he has him
in the same of his finger, he had a couple
of opportunities where he starts kind of going one on one.
It's it's almost like they found, uh, what what is
the that necessity is the root of all invention? Right,
(14:15):
you guys ever heard that expression necessity is the root
of all invention? So what the Houston Rockets have been
doing was going to their small lineup and playing p J.
Tucker to match the Hampton five lineup. Hampton five lineup
has five perimeter players, Andre Goadala and Draymond Green, essentially
the interchangeable power forward in center. Well, because Kevin Durant
(14:37):
got hurt now of a sudden, they had to modify
that lineup and use Keavon Looney. Looney becomes like a
rim protector, and it really it allowed them to put
more eyes and more hands on James Harden instead of
giving James Harden, you know, one on one opportunity after
one on one opportunity, and it worked. It worked, and
(15:00):
then offensively, you've just become kind of overly reliant on
Staph and Clay to Baill. Yeah. Michael LEAs and then
a senior NBA writer for the Athletic follow him on
Twitter at Mr Michael Lee. Did you think Katie tours
Achilles when you saw it happened live? I did. I
thought he was done, and I was just really just sad,
not for him, not just for him, but for the
(15:22):
entire league. I was just worried about just ramistications of
what it would mean for this season. Obviously, but also
the future because he's gonna be a free agent, and
he's gonna be he's highly coveted by a lot of teams,
and just whatever decision he makes is gonna off the
landscape of the league. So I was liking just a
deep panic just for the league because of it's not
(15:43):
just that he's just a good player. I mean, he's
the best player, and to have to have the possibility
that he's done, I just like every thought of like
guys whose careers were shortened everything that we never see
the full Derrick Roads and never got to see the
full Grand Hill, we never got to see the full
Penny Hardaway. And I was just thinking, like, man, Kevin
camp be one of these guys, and so so like
(16:04):
like fifteen minutes and went in to the cash strain.
I was definitely sitting there and just shaking my head, like, Wow,
how I think he's gonna come back? And I was
thinking about Kobe when he you know, ruptured as Achilles,
and how he never wasn't saying when he came back,
and uh so yeah, it was I was really just
in silence, just don silence and a kind of sickened
just by the possibility that that he could be out
(16:25):
all right, So what do we think? You know, we told,
We're told CAF injury. We don't know how bad. You
got any idea on how bad it is? No, No,
I don't. And I'm waiting on the world like everyone else. Um,
and I'm still and to be honest, I'm not even
filling certain that it's not an achilles. You know that
maybe he just wanted to calm everybody's nerves for one
(16:46):
night and then hit us with the bad news. Um.
But I've seen this happened before with the Warriors and
with Kevin, and I know that. You know, there have
been two moments of panic throughout this run with the Warriors.
One was at their steps, um have to except on
that wet spot in Houston. And then there was at
(17:07):
the end of the regular season in Kevin Durant's first
year when he heard his knee. But he's able to
come back, and obviously they won a championship that year.
But those were probably the two moments. And I think
last night he makes it three. We're during this run,
there's a moment where you're like, oh man, this is it, um,
So we'll see what happens. I mean the fact that
they still have to beat the Rockets. They have to
win at least one more game, and they may not
(17:29):
have Durant for the rest of the series, depend on
It's a very good injury. Um, you know, just could
be the end um So there's there's a lot to
worry about. Even if it's not in Achilles, it could
be he won't be able to play this series, the
rest of this series. And from Houston, I had to
look at this the same way you were last year.
(17:49):
Chris Paul got heard in Game five. You went up
three too. You had to go on the road try
to close them out, and you just couldn't get it done.
The difference is is that Chris Paul was the second
best player. This is the Warrior's best player. And they
don't have a lot of depths. Yeah, they don't have
a lot of depths. And last year, to remember, the
Warriors didn't have Andrew Goudalas. There there was a little
bit of a you're missing one, I'm missing one. Plus
(18:12):
the Warriors this year also missing DeMarcus Cousins, right like
without is it an indictment on Houston? You can't be
the Warriors who are a top heavy team without two
starters and their best player, I mean, in that indictment
on everything they've been trying to do. Yeah, it is um.
And it's also you gotta look at D'Antoni and like,
why can't you close? Why can't you get it done?
You know? So I think those questions will be answered.
(18:33):
If they aren't able to do it, um, they still
have a chance to do it. Um. But yeah, I
think last night though, was I was disappointed that James
Harden wasn't able to really you know, finish them off,
because that that's usually like when you see blood. I mean,
you know, that's usually when you strike. And the fact
that he took one shot in the last you know,
eight and a half minutes. Um, I don't. I don't
(18:53):
know if it was just the fact that Looney was
there and his presence was sort of served as a
deterrent to what he wanted to do, just I can
put of an excuse that. I think that I was
just surprised that he didn't try to come in and
just go for the kill. Um. It reminded me of
like the level of pessivity he showed a few years
ago when the Rockets had home court and the first
(19:15):
and his first came to town without Kawhi Lenard and
he took eleven shots and didn't even shoot the ball
in the first half. Uh, maybe just taking maybe taking
one shot or something. It's like, what is he doing? Well,
why isn't he trying to go in for the kill?
And uh so as well as he's been playing this series,
he's putting up phenomenal numbers. It's not just the numbers,
(19:35):
it's just just the moments that you have to strike
that you have to really just bury the team and
just take away your soul. And uh that was lacking
from last night, Like I thought, Harden really missed an
opportunity to just sort of cubment his legacy and sort
of you know, close out a team. And you know,
because you go three too against a team without Kevin Durant,
(19:56):
you're coming back to your house. You just go in
just with so much confidence. Now there's a little bit
of doubt that they're gonna be able to finish this off.
Doug Gotlip Show Michaellee joining us Doug Gallup show here
in Fox Sports Radio. Um, the Kyrie Irving experiment appears
to have been a disaster. How much do you blame Kyrie?
(20:16):
How much do you blame Brad? How much do you
blame um? Uh, you know the rest of his teammates.
You know that that maybe didn't didn't buy into his leadership.
I mean like there's a lot to go around, Gordon, Gordon, Hayward.
But but Kyrie says, you know, it's that I'm a
basketball genius. There's the no one. No one forced to
(20:39):
pick up the microphone say he was staying, nor did
anyone forced him to to to to turn around on
those remarks. How much is Kyrie to blame for this disaster? Um?
I mean he's probably, I say he's and then the
other fifty is split between Brad and Danny. But I'm
gonna start with Kyrie because what stands out to me is,
(20:59):
you know, heavy as the head that wears the crown.
Kyrie wanted the crown, he wanted the responsibility. He wanted
to be the front of the leading man. And he realized, Man,
this is hard, man, this isn't easy, this isn't what
I thought it was gonna be. And throughout his life
and throughout his career, UM, Kyrie has been a great performer.
He's been a guy that when the lights turned on,
(21:19):
you know, he can perform, and it's this stage for him.
And I think in some ways he should have viewed
leadership as a performan and like, if I act like
the leader, if I do with things leaders are supposed
to do, then I guess the guys will follow. But
teammates and guys who around you every day they see
through that. They know when you're actually put on the acting,
when you're actually being genuine. And I don't think there
(21:41):
was ever a moment throughout the season with the Celtics
stelt that Kyrie was their leader, where he was a
guy that they were going to get behind and just
follow because they knew that Kyrie didn't know what he
was doing. They knew that he was trying to figure
it out, and the fact that he's all over the
place and kind of flighty and not really stable, that
just that instability manifest in just their up and down
season and you could just see it, um, you know,
(22:04):
And I think that that's that's what stood out to me,
that Kyrie just didn't understand the magnitude of what he
was asking for. When he left Cleveland last year, he
was protected and shielded by the fact that his team
really played very well. Um, the problem is that he
came back thinking that, Okay, I'm going to be the
guy to leave these guys without understanding these guys are
(22:25):
looking at him and like, we don't need you to
be a leader. We just need you to be the closer.
We need you the guy needs to be got to
finish everything off. We already have a pretty solid foundation here.
We don't need you to take us anywhere else than
just where we haven't been. But and I think there
was some confusion and just what he his role and
responsibilities was supposed to be, and he put probably too
(22:45):
much pressure on himself. And by the end you could
just see the way he played the last couple of games,
he was checked out. There was no way you could
look at his performance and think that he was all
in on trying to salvage the rest of the season
and trying to make something happen. So you don't shoot
that poorly the way he shot, taking the shots that
he took, and and feel like you're committed to trying
(23:06):
to win games. He wasn't. And so I blame him
for that. And for Brad Stevens, I think that This
was a lesson for him because he realized that it's
easy to coach him up. It's easy to get guys
to believe in themselves and say you can be better
than what everyone says you are. It's tough to get
guys to rein it in and sort of take on
different roles. And I think the fact that he never
(23:26):
established a hierarchy and never established um, a pecking order
that guys could really get behind and trust um, that
that just created so much dissension because everybody felt like
they were entitled to more based on what happened last year,
and he never really told everybody what their place should be,
or if he did, no one really bought in. That's
on him and they Um. The reason why I put
(23:49):
some on him is that when you have a team
and a culture where everything is sort of centered around
trying to get the next big fish, and there's always
that little Anthony Davis things sort of thing going aroun
down UM, I wonder, like everyone wondered, like why is
Jason Taylum playing so poorly? Why is he? I mean
if his name is always out there like, well we'll
use him to get Anthony Davis. He says it didn't
(24:11):
make a big deal. I mean a big deal, but
you wonder if it did. You wonder if as a
young guy and you don't know if the organization is
fully committed to you, if that's gonna lead to you
going out there and doing what you need to do.
So it's it's tough. Um. I don't I don't necessary
think it's a bast thing to always try to seek
to get better. But it's tough when those things that
sort of out there in the public and and I
(24:33):
think that all all that combined to just create a
real big mess in the Celtics are gone. And uh,
I thought they were gonna be better and they let
me down. Yeah, I'm with you. Michael Lee, senior NBA
writer for The Athletic joining me on the Dug Golip
She'll fall mem on Twitter at Mr Michael Lee. Uh.
If the Sixers season ends tonight, who is in a
Sixers uniform next season? Ben Simmons and Joel en By.
(25:01):
What's the flaw? Is it that they got rid of
all the shooting around around Simmons? I mean, and beats health.
Obviously you gotta buyer beware on that thing. But but
why haven't they taken the next step? Um, Well, one,
they played a really good team, you know, the Toronto Raptors,
I think. But by the way, Michael, I actually think
that's one of the things about the Celtics that we're
(25:21):
No one says like, hey, the Bucks are the best
defensive team in the league and they're really hard to
score against. Nobody's mentioning those two teams. Yeah, No, I
mean the Bucks have been They've been this all season.
I mean like they've been telling us that way. We're
pretty good all year. The Celtics been telling us, hey, guys,
we're not really what you think we are all year
and nobody wanted to really to attended to it. Um.
The Raptors have been pretty good all year. Um, but
(25:44):
I think that one of the things that uh is
happening with the six Ers and why they haven't been
able to well, it's not serious, not over, And I
just say that it's not over. But one reason why
they're down reach you now is because um one and
beats health is definitely something that's been fragile from the
moment he started pretty much playing basketball. UM and with
Ben Simmons, um, he's got to find a way to
(26:07):
impact the game. Um, you know offensively, you know, in
a half court. And I don't really know how you
can do that without shooting. And if anybody ever watches
him in uh practice or pregame, actually practice practice shooting
jumpers like he practices, the shooting three pointers like he does,
He shoots free throws, He does all the things that
(26:28):
you are supposed to do. But when the game comes on,
for whatever reason, he refuses to do everything that he
works on. And I wonder why he even works on
the shots. Um, I wonder why he should practice is
shooting threes. I think for Ben Simmons, what he needs
to do is figure out a spot on the floor
that's just gonna he's gonna own. Figure out areas that
he can operate in and so comfortable man where he
(26:50):
can take shots, where he's not just doing jump hooks
and things like that. Um. Because if you're just a
guy standing standing straight up, you know, you're making all
your passes standing straight up, You're never going downhill, you're
never putting any pressure on the defense. Then you are
with Jared Duly said, you were, you are average in
the half court. Um. And he's got to figure out
(27:11):
what his next progression is going to be. I mean,
he's just twenty two, so I'm not gonna just completely slamming.
I think there is um a possibility that he can
figure things out. Um, but there is gonna require him
to completely restructure his shot and he's gonna have to
dedicate himself figuring out a shot that he's gonna be
able to master, you know, like a gen Rondo. I
(27:32):
always say, like people say, Ben Simmons is like a
sixteen Rondo, you know, a guy who can't really shoot,
but can really set up guys. He tells us what
to take on that sort of attitude where he's gonna
play hard, play that play tenaciously and just get out
there an attack. But the thing my Rondo is that
he couldn't shoot, but he get his shot, you know.
And that's what Ben's gotta realize. You entering out a shooter,
(27:53):
you got to find a spot on the floor that
that's yours. And um, that's gonna be his next uh,
the next challenge for him. Boston exposed Indeed and Simmons
last year in areas they need to improve and it's
coming right back around where the Raptors are doing the same. UM,
and if they got two games to try to figure
it out, we'll start with tonight and UM and we'll
(28:15):
see from there. Michael, great stuff. Man, really appreciate you. Oh.
I can't let you go without asking it. You know
people in this league. Yeah, what are they saying about
the Lakers? That they are a mess, that they are dysfunctional,
that they are every bit of dysfunctional as any other
franchise you could think of in this league. And I'm
just gonna throw this out there. UM, I feel like
(28:37):
the Lakers are becoming what the Knicks are, where you
have a family business passed on to a child. UM,
and they don't really know what they're doing. And that's
starting to be exposed right now. UM. The mistakes that
they're making shouldn't be made by a top notch organization.
UM that they got to get some people in there
who know what they're doing. UM. Otherwise the Lakers are
(29:00):
continue to be in this kind of route whether or
not going to get out Like we know what the
Lakers have done in the past, but you can't hold
on there forever. Right now, the president is pretty bleak
and it shouldn't be when you have Lebron James on
your team, and so yeah, that's that's that's yep. I
I think you think you neil that. Michael Lee, senior
NBA writer for The Athletic fallm on Twitter at Mr
(29:21):
Michael Lee. Thanks so much Michael to have me on.
All right, let's get you to Dan Buyer, get a
little update. He's gloating because I owe him a pizza
or two. He said his bucks would win. I think
he said in five and he was right in five. Yes, absolutely,
Uh cashed in or will cash in with some zah.
We may get to that and just a little bit.
But I've got breaking news first of all about Kevin Durant.
(29:45):
Reports say ESPN, reporting that Durant suffered a mild calf
strain in the last night's Game five win over the
Rockets and will be re evaluated next week. That means
that Durant would be out of the Western Conference semifinal
series four games seven on Sunday if he's gonna be
reevaluated next week. Doug, so, no Kevin Durant in this
(30:06):
Rocket series. Steve car already ruled him out of Game
six last night and now wouldn't play in Game seven.
Because of that calf strain. No Willis Reid. You don't
think there's a Willis Reid moment coming on Sunday. I
don't think so. I I don't think that would be
the case. The timetable, as people are trying to piece
it together, would be an early return in the Western
(30:27):
Conference Finals, but that would be because he's had a
calf strain already this season which cost him about a week.
Anthony Slater, who I believe was a friend of the
show of the Athletics, said that Durant had a calf
strain earlier the season cost him about a week. So
a week from today would be Game three of the
Western Conference Finals. That's what we know. So no Kevin
(30:48):
Durant in the final two games of their series if
necessary against the Houston Rockets. A couple of series could
be closed out tonight Eastern semis Raptors in six or
eight o'clock Eastern Time, as Toronto was up three two
as they play him really Glazier's home in Portland, but
it's the Nuggets up three two in that series, tipping
off at ten thirty Eastern time. Lakers are reported the
interviewing former Magic and Pacers head coach Frank Vogel for
(31:09):
their head coaching vacancy. That's according to the l A Times.
Some news from the NFL as Jaguar's linebacker Telvin Smith
announced that he won't play football in twenty nine. Smith
says he quotes, must give this time back to myself,
my family and my health. Quick update on baseball. They're
in a delay in Cleveland, Indians on top of the
White Sox five nothing in the sixth. Rockies lead the
(31:29):
Giants in the first three nothing, while the Angels are
all over the Tigers seven nothing in the sixth. Cubs
have a two nothing lead on the Marlins in the fourth.
We'll be back to the Doug Gottlib Show in ten seconds.

Smith story, this is an interesting one. Yes, this just
came out within the last yea where he was the
subject of some trade rumors this offseason. Don't know if
(32:13):
maybe that's was the reason. Says that it doesn't know
when he's going to call it quits playing, but when
he does, it will be as a member of a
jack to have the Jaguars is that's where he spent
his entire career, but just announced today that he is
not going to play in the twenty nineteen season. Wow.
Um So he signed a deal in two thousand seventeen
(32:35):
which averages eleven point one million dollars guarantees him twenty
point four million dollars. Um man, I mean, I don't
that's one way I guess to get yourself offer on
the trade block, Like I'm just not playing. Okay, good
(32:56):
luck with that, Good luck with that. Doug Olive Show

we get you to all the stories today. We do
so by playing a game. This is game time on
the Doug gott Leaps Show. Little Caesar is the place
to go out tonight. Get a large five meat feast

(34:08):
The five Meat Feast only nine dollars a Little Caesar's
plus tax re applicable available to participating locations. Canadian bacon
will be substitute for him in certain areas. Buyer got Doug.
The game today is alright, Doug, Guess who bet online
feels is the favorite to win the NBA title this season.
(34:31):
Milwaukee Bucks no the Houston Rockets the Golden State Warriors. Yeah,
still the favorite at one to one according to bet online,
but it was three to four last week. The Bucks
were a nine to two favorite. Now we've moved up
to a five to two favorite to win the NBA
(34:51):
title with these latest odds moved up Yeah, Bucks, uh,
increasing the likelihood to two to five to two. Now
should have got anybody going, was good. Guess guess who
Doug is a seven point underdog for tomorrow's Game six
in Houston. I'm gonna say the Golden State Warriors. Yes,
(35:13):
that is the case. No Durant in Game six, and
as we just found out a little bit ago, no
Durant in Game seven if necessary, as he'll be re
evaluated with a mild calf strain next week. Seven points,
that's a lot of points. Yeah, I mean it just
you do wonder whether or not the Warriors will go
for it, or whether they will, you know, play everybody
(35:35):
on their roster, rest their stars and bet on Game
seven at home guests Who dog said they did a
quote bad job end quote this season for the Boston Celtics.
Brad Stevens, Yeah, that is the case. They head coach
talking about it after his Game five loss to the
Milwaukee Bucks, where their season ended, saying that, yeah, he
(35:56):
did a bad job with this team this year. I
don't think that. I don't think he did his best jow.
I think that's being accountable. That's who Brad is. I
don't think he did his best job. He had trouble
communicating with his team. Some of it is the team
not fitting his personality and what he's coached before. Some
of it is Brad needs to to bend and maybe
change his staff. You know Michael Shrewsbury, whose defensive coordinator
left to go to Purdue. It was announced last night
(36:18):
after the game. So maybe he brings in somebody who
does do a better job of relating with some of
these guys guests who unretired so he could become Tom
Brady's newest target. Uh Benjamin Watson, Yes he did. He
came out of retirement, thought he was gonna hang him up.
But now with Grog hanging him up, Ben Watson's gonna
go to where he started his career and become a
(36:41):
member of the New England Patriots once again. Yeah, I
mean this is kind of classic Patriots, right. They tried
this last year with a bunch of receivers. They'll try
it this year with tight ends, you know, and Kurt's
I mean Kurt Um. Benjamin Watson is a super smart guy,
so he'll be where he's supposed to be. Still has
some in the tank, and you know, it's like life
coming full circle. He's originally drafted by the Patriots. I
(37:01):
mean it's been so long. I remember, and he was
just Ben Watson. Yeah, I mean he's played so long.
I actually thought at one point they were two different guys.
But he's now Benjamin Watson. Guess who Doug knocked in
his two thousand career run today? Just the fourth player
in baseball history to reach that mark. That would be
Albert pool Jones. That is correct. Now, this is what's interesting.
(37:22):
The Alias Sports Bureau only dates back to nineteen twenty,
so they consider pool Holes the third player to reach
two thousand RBI's, behind Hank Aaron and Alex Rodriguez. Babe
Ruth had two thousand, two hundred and fourteen. But those
RBIs coming prior to nineteen twenty, they aren't recognized by
(37:44):
the Alias Sports Bureau. Okay, I don't recognize him like
I don't recognize you at all. I'm an im B
I from Sorry, I just I can't place it. I
don't really Hi, I'm an RB I from you. I
know you, I know you, you, I know you. Why
don't they just go to YouTube and count the games?
(38:06):
You know that that and then you'd be fine with
Babe Ruth. Right, just searched nineteen seventeen Red Sox game,
Babe Ruth, and you'll come up with all you need
but holes. Yeah, the two thousand mark just eighty six
away from passing Alex Rodriguez on that list, second or third,
whatever list you want to go by. Guess who Doug
Bertie his first hole of the day at the A
(38:28):
T and T Byron Nelson. Yeah, yeah, they're probably Romo.
Say he was gonna buried the whole Before he buried
the whole, I'm not sure that would be great, though.
Hey I'm gonna hit this within twelve feet and have
a birdie. But he did Bertie's first hole of the day.
There are other players that probably did so, but Romo
right now one under par through three holes on his
(38:49):
first round. He's currently in a tie for seventy one
at one under. The lead is Denny McCarthy at eight
under par Even if Robo would come close to the
hut would still be quite an accomplishment. I think, for sure,
no question, be a huge accomplishment. I forgot what he
teed off today and I went to go and check
where he was, and I just immediately squirreled to the
(39:11):
bottom because I'm like, there's no way that he's going
to be near the top. He hadn't teed off yet,
but now he's on the course one under parcel. Good
for Tony Romo. Finally, Doug, guess who on the crew
wants mushrooms on the pizza that you're treating us to
after the Celtics Bucks. Bet we made it? Sounds like you,
m yeah. Somehow John Ramos like made his way into
(39:32):
the bat and is now making the request. I want
zero mushrooms. I don't even want a hint of a
mushroom on the pizza that is coming in. When we
when we can, we can make this transaction. Um, here's
what you need to tell John Ramos. John, they don't
put those kind of mushrooms on pizza. This is game
(39:55):
time on the Duck Godly Show. I have so much
stuff you're kind of on my desk that I'm trying
I want to get to today. Last night was crazy crazy,
you know, just just the last night's game in Well,
it was a three point game in the second quarter,
then all of a sudden it was a twenty point game,
(40:15):
and it felt like the Warriors they didn't go for
a bunch of kill shot threes, the game would have
been over at the end of the first half, like over,
move on, And you do kind of wonder in terms
of butterfly effect, had they instead of gotten a little
selfish and taking some crazy shots that they moved that
lead from twenty to thirty by halftime. With Kevin dur
have gotten hurt. Would he be in in that or
(40:37):
needed in that moment? I don't know. Then he does
get hurt, people assume it's his achilles, that know, it's
his calf, but then the apparently his calf is so
bad he's not We already know he's not gonna play
in sixty might not playing seven. But it's only mild.
Like I don't know any caps spraying in the world
that you're definitely out for a week with. It feels
(40:57):
like it, you know, it feels like he Tora a
calf muscle. I feel like a Tory capitalist and then
you got the self this game. I still want to
get in on Kyrie Irving. I tell you who Kyrie
Irving is or who he's becoming. He's doing what so
many of his parents don't want to do. But coming
up next, Um, anyone who's lived in l A knows
(41:19):
this to be true. Anyone who's vacationed in l A
has thought this might be true. And anybody who hasn't
been to l A or vacation there assumes it must
be true. The Lakers are l A's team. I'll explain next.

I hope you're having a great day. Last hour we
took down the Rockets saying, hey, look, I know that
the stories about Kevin Durant, who's not going to travel
with the team for Game six because of a strained calf,
puts Game seven very much in jeopardy as he's not
gonna be evaluated until next week. And while everybody's worried
(42:25):
about the Warriors, and this generally is how dynasties come
to an end, They come to an end because of injuries.
Remember that's what happened with the Lakers. When the Lakers
had Kobe and Shack. They still got to the NBA
Finals and faced off the with the Detroit UH Pistons,
but they Rick Fox went down with an injury. Karme
(42:45):
alone went down with an injury, and of course you
had the in fighting between Kobe Bryant Shaquille O'Neil. But
injuries were very much part of the story when the
Lakers UH showtime Lakers, when that run came to an end,
Byron Scott was the one that got hurt. What brought
the Boston Celtics to their knees. It was Larry Bird's back.
(43:07):
Larry Bird's back, so injuries often oftentimes are what really
derails championship teams just to wear and tear, and look
the amount of games you play. I mean, if you
really want to get down to it, you had the
(43:28):
Warriors that messed around against the Clippers and lost two games.
Maybe they're a little fresher and they beat the Rockets
in five games. Last night doesn't happen where last night happens.
But or they're up I don't know, they're fresher so
he doesn't get hurt. Or they're up twenty and they
(43:51):
take better shots and they go up thirty and then
it's a rap and Kevin Durant doesn't have to push himself.
And or maybe it's just freak thing, but injuries oftentimes
derail dynasties. Um, I'll tell you who. Kyrie Irving reminds
me of upcoming in the show. He's become, he's become
(44:14):
what none of us want to be when we're parents.
But man, is there a more l A team than
the Lakers. Don't get me wrong, as much as right
now we're gonna put l A and the dysfunction within
the Lakers in the forefront. They're not alone in Southern California.
They're just not I mean, USC and I don't know
(44:37):
how much people know about usc S issues, but um,
they have like three or four things working against them.
So the football team, they wanted to fire the coach,
but they don't really have the money. And they hired
an offensive coordinator who was Cliff Kingsbury and he leaves
like a month in after signing a recruiting class to
(44:58):
become the head coach the ares on the Cardinals. Again,
these are unforeseen circumstances, but still it did happen. And
so you have a recruiting class of offensive kids that
came here to play for Cliff and now he's gone,
and you're back playing for a coach who feels like
a lame duck. And then you got Urban Meyer who'll
be working down the street. There's a bunch of f
(45:18):
SC guys working with him in Fox and you're like,
wait is the mare coach next year. Then you have
a basketball coach at SC and Tony Bland, who was
fired because the FBI probe. Then you have the university
itself that has paid out hundreds of millions of dollars
in lawsuits because they have their own issue with the
doctor doing inappropriate things. Plus you have the Payola scheme
(45:42):
right where you have um parents of you know, rich
parents paying for kids to get into USC, which we
all thought was happening, and turns out it is happening.
USC is a dumpster fire. U C l A Basketball
was the first to fire their coach, and Steve Alford.
They search and search and search, and they end up
coming up with a guy who would have taken the
(46:04):
job months ago. And it's not really an LA guy.
Guys never really coached outside of Cincinnati, Kentucky and Louisville,
and Mick Cronin doesn't make him a bad coach, but God,
that search was was gnarly. And then you have the Lakers.
I mean, the Lakers are the combination of all things
l A. Right, They're like, what are the Lakers? And
(46:28):
the rest of the world is like, yeah, you're the Lakers.
It's been six years now that you've been bad. You know,
the Lakers who are always way way way too into
their former players, way way way too into their set themselves,
way way way too into the l A thing. I
(46:49):
love Los Angeles. I love Southern California. Live here. I
grew up here. It was in fact easy to move away,
not once but twice cost of living audio living. And
you get to a point where these NBA players that
are like, look, I'd love to live in l A.
I like living more. It's warm going to the game,
when you don't have to wear a parker. That's pretty dope.
(47:11):
But half the teams in the NBA are in warmer
weather clients. Maybe not like this, they also other teams.
You play in warm weather clients. You don't have to
fight traffic. And I can live there in the summer
when I want to that three months out of the year.
The rest of the year I'm living and out of
a hotel. Anyway, what's the difference. What's the difference. It's
not like I can live right next to the facility
(47:32):
where the schools are good. You now, I can live
pretty close. Just the whole l A thing is great
if you're already here and you benefit from the real
estate going up and you make money in your real estate.
But the Lakers, if you weren't paying attention, yesterday comes
out that Tyron Loeu wanted the Laker's job, and they
(47:53):
thought they wanted him. They offered him a job three
years somewhere in the eight teen million variety. He wanted five,
and they also wanted him to take not just Jason Kidd,
but it's probably strong likely they wanted Kurt Rambis involved
because Rambis has somehow gotten himself in alved his wife
Linda as the ear of Genie Buss and so at
(48:18):
the by the end of the day, Tyron Loui was like, dude,
I just tried to explain this to my children this morning.
They were like, wait, does Tyron Loeu have a job?
I said no, So he would rather not have a
job then take the Lakers job. I said yes, I said, wow,
that must be a bad job, I said Apparently, keep
(48:41):
in mind that the Lakers uh went from a four
seed in the playoffs to not making the playoffs. They
had to shut Lebron down for fear of injury and embarrassment.
They had to fire Luke Walton. This after Magic Johnson
(49:02):
summarily resigned with no pressure to do so, just in
bizarre fashion. And then Monty Williams, who was rumored to
be one of the favorites for the job, apparently turned
down the job to take the Sun's job, which is
seen as an awful job not because of town, because
of who you work for Robert Sarver. The idea that
the Laker's job is worse than the son's job is
(49:24):
alarming to anybody. And I'd like to put some of
it on Lebron, on optics of hiring a Lebron guy.
And I think reality is true. But is there ever
more l A thing to say it's l A's team
than the Lakers? Again, I like southern California. I live
in a great place where I live, which is close
(49:44):
to the beach. It's overcast every day. They call it
May gray. So up until about eleven thirty twelve o'clock
it's overcast and then it burns off and it's sunny
and it's like sixty seven degrees, which if you're in
thirty degree weather in the middle of January, that's great.
But right now, in most parts of the country, it's
spring and it's beautiful. And it costs an eighth as
(50:07):
much or a fifth as much or a third as
much to live here. And yeah, it's sunny, but I
have to drive through traffic every day. And yeah, I
make money on my house, but I also give up
some of that money the taxes that I pay. And yeah,
the l A thing is really cool. Staples is cool.
They're not the only one plays at Staples. And you
(50:31):
can live in l A when you when you're in
the NBA and not play in l A. I think
the l A thing is much like the Lakers thing.
You sell. It is the greatest thing, the entertainment capital
of the world. Like you can make records in your basement,
you can make movies anywhere. And when not one but
(50:53):
two head coaches turned down the Lakers want to take
the son's job, the other one to take no job,
and you're left with no smart answers for the problem
of how do we put a great coaching staff and
a better team around Lebron James. And we're halfway to June.
(51:15):
The Lakers are l A's team, all right there? If
you drive down the freeway. I remember I was in
Remember we broadcast shows from Israel, guys, and I said
this about Israel at the time, and I'd probably sound
like the worst form of an l A guy, where
I was like, man, there are no nice car, zero
nice cars in Israel. Like I I was there for
(51:35):
a month. I never saw a car. I was like,
I would drive that car. That's a beautiful car. You
know they have Mercedes Benz cabs, but you hop into
them and they're not like Mercedes Benz. Here you drive
down the street in l A and you're like Man Tesla,
Jag Fisker, Rolls, Royce, Mercedes Benz Range Rover. Now, these
(51:55):
people may live in apartments, they may live out in
the nine oh nine where it takes forever to get
to work and there's you know, small one bad days,
but they got a nice car. That's what lay is.
It's all it can be all show and no substance.
Because if there was substance there, Monty Williams or Tyler
(52:19):
would be the coach. But instead it's just be coming
about just another job and not a good one. And
because there's dysfunction in the front office, it's seen as
a high level of toxicity. And yeah, the lebron thing
probably freaks some dudes out. Nick right from first things
first joints to show up coming next? What does he
think of the Lakers situation and does he think his
(52:41):
rockets can take down the Warriors without Durant we'll discuss next.

Nick Wright had some breaking news today on First Things First,
I couldn't sleep, so I was up watching and that
was really, really good. So we reached out to him
and we said, hey, this is a dude who knows
all about the Eustern Rockets. He stayed up late watching
the game and I'm sure giggling at what was taking
place with the Lakers. He's got his own TV show,
(53:45):
he's got his own radio show. He's a friend of
the show. Uh. He joins the song on the Doug
Gallup Show on Fox Sport Tradio. Take Me through the
timeline of what took place between you reported this earlier,
So I don't want to play the sound. Just what
took place between ty Lose, Tyler Tyler's Amp and the Lakers. Okay,
so I want to just so everyone gets full credit here.
The part of this that is my own original reporting
(54:07):
is the Rambist family element. The other parts are from
Tanya Gongouli, Adrian Waldronowski, and Mike mark Stein. But here's
the timeline. A little over a week ago, Tylo interviewed
with the Lakers. He impressed Genie Buss and her brothers.
He impress Rob Blinka. They were ready to make him
an offer. However, Gennie and Rob were worried about the
optics of it. The optics that Lebron would have too
(54:29):
much control to one of the reasons they wanted to
wait until money Williams was off the table. Jeannie then
had a much publicized dinner with Magic Johnson. Magic tells her,
do not worry about the optics. That's stupid. You gotta
worry about how to win with Lebron. Kie knows how
to win with Lebron. He's the right choice. So Jeannie
then decided she was going to move forward. You saw
(54:50):
Tylo got the same feeling of that by the Lakers
themed birthday cake he had this Friday, and then Hurt
and Linda Rambis put this whole thing on a different path.
They were saying, we do not think Ty is the guy,
and if Tye is the guy, he does not have
other options. You need to make some demands. The demands were,
we get to pick your coaching staff, which means either
(55:12):
Kurt Is on the bench or Jason Kidd, maybe Frank
Vogel or on the bench. I am told Ty was
actually amenimbal to Jason Kidd being on the bench with him.
I think that would have been dangerous, but Ty was
going to do it. And the other thing the Rambis
has convinced Jeanie and Polinka to offer was instead of
the standard five year deal or even a four year deal,
a three year deal, where on their final offer they
(55:37):
got it to three years nineteen million dollars eight teams
being reported, the real number is nineteen It was five million,
six million, and then eight million for the three years.
When Ty asked directly, why was Luke Walton worth a
five year deal and I'm worth a three year deal?
He was told, I am being told because Luke was
being hired to coach the team, you are being hired
(55:58):
to coach Lebron. Lebron only is three years left on
his deal, and so Ty walks and now the Lakers
have to start all over. But a mess, total mess. Embarrassed.
But by the way, I I the part you added
in that other people missed his They did. They wanted
Kurt on the bench. They want to cur in the
bench with Luke too. That was one of the things
(56:19):
when they met with with Luke at the end of
the season. They wanted Kurt on the bench with Luke.
And look was like no. And if people don't remember,
here's here's Kurt Rambas's coaching career. Okay, he briefly coached
the Lakers that he had a winning record twenty four
and thirteen. I think they got swept in the second round.
As soon as he left, they won the title. It
(56:40):
was the last year Shock and Kobe didn't win the title.
He then had two years in Minnesota where he went
fifteen and sixty seven and then seventeen and sixty five.
He then had a brief stint with the New York Knicks,
where he couldn't figure out how to find porn on
the internet without doing it publicly on Twitter and went
eleven and nineteen. He his career outside of the brief
(57:02):
sent with Shack and Kobe where they weigh underachieved that
half season, he's forty one and a hundred and forty one.
In what world is Kurt Rambis some coaching Svengali that
you need to bend do his will? And in what
world does Linda Rambis know how to build a basketball team?
I don't know, I don't I don't know why. Suddenly
(57:22):
Jeannie Buss became somebody that people are opining for previously
because they thought Jim Buss had had run this thing
into the ground. All right, So look, you still have Lebron,
you have calf space, you have a lottery pick. What
what do you think they're gonna do? Well? Had they
signed Tylu, I think they would have been in a
(57:45):
really good position to get Kyrie and Lebron. Plus Kyrie
can win a title, we know that. But Tyler can
coach into a title. We know that. I still think
they can maybe get Kyrie. I mean, Kyrie learned this
year and having the worst four game stretch of his
career be the final four games of the Boston Celtics. Hey, man,
ain't everybody cut out to be the number one. He's not.
(58:06):
He's a way over qualified number two. And he I believe,
while he wouldn't publicly say that, he's gonna say that
with his actions by signing up to either be Kevin
Durant or Lebron James is number two next season. So
I still think they might get Kyrie. They obviously still
theoretically could trade for Anthony Davis. But this idea that
(58:27):
the and that you know the report that there are
people whispering in Genie's ear imploring her to trade Lebron,
that hell, is Lebron done wrong here? And what situation
has changed to where that that when you moved mountains
to make it so you could sign Lebron a year
into it, you don't want it. He played to his
career averages that the difference was he got hurt. But
(58:50):
it's not like he all of a sudden looks like
Chris Paul out there. I don't. I mean, I think
that they just hope and pray on free agency, but
they have butchered this entire situation. They could have hired
a team president. They didn't. They could have hired a coach,
they haven't. And now it's Linda Rambish shadow owner. And
it's just they are the New York Knicks West. I
(59:13):
couldn't agree with you more. I talked to three people
in the organization. They're like, I don't even I don't
even know what to say to you. I don't even know.
I have no idea. Like we were all operating under
assumption TI is getting the job, and then we were
going after free yes, yes, like had a he had
a Laker's birthday, can't class Friday like everybody did. It
(59:34):
wasn't a joke. It was reality and and and here's
the other thing. Here's the other thing. Like the whole
like trade Lebron thing is such a pipe dream. He
didn't have to go anywhere. He doesn't want to go anywhere.
His kids are in school here, he lives here, like
he's not going and you're not trading him. There's no
reality to it. You can't get back anything in return
for you know what you need and return Like that's
(59:54):
just like somebody who says that, Yes, somebody who says
that and allows that to be to Stephen a smith
or whatever should never be is a bad source. That's
something you should never go to again. Except unless here's
the thing. I do believe that it's totally listen you
you know this. There are people now they are typically
(01:00:15):
Twitter trolls or just fan like die hard fan boys,
but there are people that have an element of like
Lebron James derangement syndrome. He should be one in eight
in the finals. He never could sniff Kobe's this, he's
the And what it would appear is some of those
people are in positions of power with the Lakers because
they are. They are, they clearly are. Just what they
(01:00:37):
want to do is a hard reset as if the
team doesn't have the best basketball player in the world.
And if you want to argue with that, no, we
don't need to one of the three best basketball players
in the world, an enormously valuable player. If you're trying
to win a championship next season, or trying to get
to the playoffs next season, or trying to and you
have Lebron add another superstar and if you nothing else,
(01:01:00):
even with the young roster, you'll be in the playoffs
next year, right And like everyone obviously the Anthony Davis
thing didn't work out. I'm just curious if the Lakers
had gotten Anthony Davis, right, and they all they had
called it to the seventh seed in the West, and
they were the team they were, they were the Spurs
that took the Nuggets seven games, if the Lakers Lebron
(01:01:23):
was Anthony Davis or on the opposite side of what's
going on with Houston Golden State, aren't we right now
saying like, holy crap, they could win the title? Like
they going for Anthony Davis was the right call if
they could have gotten him. Because this thing, because things
do open up, injuries do happen. You should never punt
on a season. You should always go for it when
(01:01:44):
you have a player as good as Lebron. Nick Right
from First Things First and The Nick Right Show, joining
us in the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
All Right, let's get to the let's get to Kyrie Irving. Um,
clearly he bit off more than he at you. He
just is so weird. He just why can't he be normal?
(01:02:07):
Why must he say things like I'm a basketball genius?
Why must he why? Why? Why he's so talented? Why
can't he just be a regular dude. Did you hear
Did you hear his press conference at the end of
it yesterday when he was asked about his future. It
was epic, Kyrie, have you heard it? I'm not trying
(01:02:28):
to put you on this, Okay. He was asked about
his future, and this is what he said. And this
is nearly a direct quote, but you'll love the audio
if you pull it. He said, all right, Well, first
of all, I'm focused right now on safely returning to Boston,
like he means, like the travel like guys, I've got
to get on a plane go from Milwaukee to Boston.
(01:02:49):
I'm focused on safely returning to Boston. Here here, here,
we we we have it for you. Nick, here, We'll
play it. Go ahead, got it? Family? Do what human
beings do, Doug. I mean, why I used to up
here asking me these questions about my future. I'm just
(01:03:10):
a human being. I'm just you know, adams and molecules
and particles floating through space a few thousand miles an hour,
and I'm just trying to get home for one place
to another, Milwaukee to Boston. Man. I don't know if
you've heard about these uh you know the seven thirty seven.
Max is man air travels not the same as that
us me. You're asking me about things in the future.
I don't know if I'm gonna get there. He is
an odd cat, but he also is an odd cat
(01:03:32):
who right now this moment deserves to be judged harshly.
All year long, Doug, he was the sales guy who
every time they had the sales meeting and have you
met your quota? His answer was nope, but don't worry
about it. Got folks coming in at the end of
the month, It's like, well, everyone else you know is here.
(01:03:52):
I'm telling you don't worry about it. I've done this before,
all my customers coming in at the end of the month.
Talk to me at the end of the month. I'm
not dealing with you till the end of the month.
At the end of the month rolled around, none of
those customers came. And then he's like, what's the big deal?
Everyone screws up a little bit sometimes, babe, Like, no,
you can't say it's all about the playoffs, and then
(01:04:12):
literally have the worst four game stretch of your entire
career playoffs or regular season, the final four games of
your season in four straight losses like it, and by
the way, against team they beat the previous year. And
when he played poorly and somebody asked HI about taking
twenty two shots, he's like, I should just I should
have taken thirty. Like what it was. It was unbelievable
(01:04:35):
the the so after game one, they obviously win, his
press conference is fine. After game two they lose. He
played terribly, but they're happy they gotta split, and his
press conference he's like, listen, this is what I signed
up for. You know, I gotta play better. Game three
he goes eight of twenty two, and his press conferences,
I guarantee you I won't go out of twenty two again.
(01:04:56):
Games He's right. Game four he goes seven of twenty too,
and he says I should have taken thirty shots. Game
five he goes six of twenty one with one assist,
and he says, there's no disappointment. This party is the journey,
hey man, this is the one time of year where
it's nothing but disappointment. There God blasted Seaton's over and
your entire trade me away from Lebron. I want my
(01:05:19):
own team. Was an abject failure, and for the Celtics,
they've been accumulating these these I mean assets like infinity
stones for years and years and years. The one guy
they actually fired their gun on they got nine playoff games.
Out of they were five and four in those playoff games.
He is going to walk for nothing. They're not going
(01:05:42):
to get Anthony Davis. And here's gonna be a really
interesting question once free agency settles and the Celtics get
No One and the Nets get somebody who's in a
better position moving forward, the Celtics are the Nets a
decade after the Celtics police the Nets that. I don't
know the answer to that, but the fact that it's
even close is an embarrassment for Danny Andering company. Nick
Right joining us on the Doug Outlive Show. Did you
(01:06:04):
think Kad popped as Achilles when it happened yesterday? I mean, well,
I mean I did, because Reggie Miller was just told
me he did. Listen, man, I wouldn't know high level
appyte like you, Doug Gottlieb. I stopped in high school.
They when I listened to the guys who played when
it comes to injuries, and everyone seemed to think he
popped as Achilles. I thought, I now. My initial reaction
(01:06:25):
was like, I know you can walk off in Achilles,
but you don't. I mean, you know, you you're usually
That's my thing is you're usually dragging your leg. Everybody
likes Reggie Miller. And because no, everybody doesn't like Reggie Miller. Okay,
well I would say people they want, but they want
to go with that. Well, you know, he was kind
of specking like you can't do what he did. You
(01:06:48):
you you can't. You can't speak. This is why. Because everybody,
I mean, if you're watching the game on Twitter, like
everybody's like prayers up for Katie. I was like, well,
maybe you had a cramp. There's other stuff like Katie's
legs are so weird. I don't know where the calf
begins and ends, Like can I ask you a question
though really quickly, because I'm sure I've been too long winded.
(01:07:09):
But then you've been driving the Kevin Durant's the greatest
player in the league train for quite some time, and
he obviously has been sensational over the last it will
basically post game two of Round one, so it was
eight and a half games even he had been playing
so well. He had twenty in the first half and
no one even mentioned it, like every and so he
(01:07:29):
has been really great. But if they just lost the
best player in the world, do you think they're cooked?
I actually was gonna I was actually gonna get to this, Okay.
I think it's an indictment on Houston if you can't
beat the Warriors without not just KD, but without without
DeMarcus Cousins, Like, isn't that an indictment on and and
(01:07:49):
and look? In all honesty, I think what necessity is
the root of all invention? Kavan Looney save that game
for them because they had to play him and a
game rimpered tection. And so when instead of trying to
guard James Harden one on one, they got up in pressure,
James Harden enforced the Looney and he was forced to
pass the basketball. Like people are freaking out because he
(01:08:10):
only took one shot. He only took one shot because
he wasn't open. Other guys are open, and Chris Paul
can't make a shot anymore. Rights just everybody else just
limited on that team. No one else can create anything,
so he has to do everything. But I thought there
was an adjustment in at a necessity in the way
in which Golden State played and I think that changed
the game as much as anything. Well, and the other
(01:08:31):
thing is, and this has been the issue with evaluating
Durant or step over the last three years. And no
matter how great either one of them plays, you're not
gonna be able to convince me otherwise. Is there are
seven teams still remaining in the postseason. For six of them,
if they lost their Durant, they are cooked done over,
(01:08:53):
no chance whatsoever in surviving for half a game, much
less the rest of the NBA playoffs. If the news
today was Durant is out for the season, the Warriors
would be co favorites right now with Milwaukee to win
the title like and so they are, and because guess what,
guess what that unit was able to do that no
(01:09:13):
other dynasty has ever been able to do mid dynasty
lose the guy who a lot of people think is
their best player and oh wait, let's just go to
our championship memories before him, they instantly transitioned back to
being the Splash Brothers with a snarling menacing Draymond Green.
And so I listen, I think Houston can beat him.
(01:09:35):
But it was an enormous missed opportunity last night James
Harden is catching all the smoke because people don't understand basketball.
Chris Paul, you haven't exactly right. He was awful. Glint
Capella and Chris Paul, your second third highest paid players,
were six or twenty four in that basketball game, and
it was amazing. It felt to me like Houston was
in going to win that game before Katie got hurt
(01:09:57):
that the Warriors were wiped out. They had the race
that deficit, and then all of a sudden, the Warriors
a sense of desperation and step got going. Casseppe's playing
terribly until Katie went down, a sense of desperation overtook
him and Draymond started doing Draymond things. Can I ask
you a quick question about Draymond? He definitely has basically
hacked the system on if I just always act like
(01:10:21):
a total maniac, I have just moved the goalposts on
what guys will team me up for, right, like Draymond
has made where if Staine Lillard had one of the
seven typical Draymond Green reactions per game, any one of
them would get him teed up. But because Draymond's like, ah,
that's just the crazy guy. I mean, if he had
(01:10:44):
he had to hip check a guy in the head
fourth quarter and then they're like, Okay, I guess we'll
tee him up. And then even after that, I mean,
he is just snarling and spitting and yelling and the
reactual like Draymond being Draymond. It's he's just it's unbelievable
how he's basically made himself untechnical because he's always crazy.
Because I look, I would agree with you. I would
(01:11:05):
also point out that in the same sense Chris Paul
and the flopping and trying to start something and being
the tough guy and to get he pushes the same
goal he doesn't in his own is an own special way,
right like Chris Paul's. He's reached that part of his
career where he can't beat you, so he's gonna try
and fight you or get under your skin, which is remarkable.
(01:11:26):
Consider have an element of if we commit passing her
parents on every play, they're not going to follow it
on every That was the Seattle Seahawks in this spol
That's exactly what I was thinking of, Like we'll just
we'll just illegally bump your receivers every single time, and
you can't call it every single time, So bleep you
it's smart if you can get away with it. How
about how about but how about how about Draymond where
(01:11:47):
he draws a charge which was questionable, but he draws
a charge on Chris Paul and instead of getting up
and clapping, then he like needs him and then post
a little bit like what are you doing? Do you
want you have? He has zero chance of losing the
game if you just play it straight, none like an
eight point lead, and he has something stupid like that.
(01:12:07):
He's insane. The thing, the answer to that question, Doug
is he's nuts. And guess what, he will never not
be nuts because the reason I don't believe this, but
I know Draymond believes this. I know people in Golden
State believe this. You might believe this. The reason they
are not four time defending champions is because he couldn't
keep it together during the NBA Finals, plus Lebron in
(01:12:30):
the in the bowls and so like. If that it's
not Lesson lurged, then they'll never be Lesson lurged. He's
a crazy guy, but he is so valuable to them
and all of a sudden aside to be a basketball
player again, which he wasn't most of the season. Yeah,
he shot a backpack three. It was a critical three
right after that, Like he No, he's I mean, he's
he's so valuable to him. I have a ton of
respect for her. I want people to understand that. I
(01:12:52):
think he's great. But Nick, get to your own show.

Meat Feast for nine dollars at Little Caesar's Pizza Pizza.
This was Chris Carter earlier today talking about the Lakers
(01:16:55):
and what they should consider with Lebron James. For me,
if I'm the Lakers, I'm thinking about trading Lebron James.
Why Because I don't know what kind of free agent
I'm gonna be able to get to secure to play
with Lebron James. And if I don't have the actual
draw of Magic Johnson no more and Lebron James. That now,
all this because Lebron is gonna take a hit for
(01:17:17):
this Tiler thing. When players and their agents are out
there just like you're saying, oh, people got this Lebron
James syndrome. There's a real thing in the NBA. It's
not the whole NBA, but there is a thing with
certain agents and certain players that they believe that there's
too much drama surrounding Lebron James. So if I don't
get the free agent that I want, I'm considering trading
(01:17:39):
Lebron because what good is it gonna who are you
gonna beat? You and kimba Um. I mean, look, do
I consider it? Yeah? I consider it, But I you know,
you don't know what you're going to trade for just yeah,
I mean you don't. You don't know what what's on
the free agent market just yet. The market changes, the
(01:18:01):
market evolves, and if I'm them, I don't think it's
yet time to panic, right and trading away Lebron James
one year in is a panic move. I don't know
if he'll ever be the player that he was, but
the player that he can be. One of the great
things about Lebron theoretically is his game is better because
(01:18:23):
it it can create shots for other people more so
and because of his size more so than um, say
Chris Paul can Now or Kobe Bryant could at the
end of his run. You know, Kobe had to be
Kobe could do nothing more than just he had to
be the alpha. He does what he had to do,
had to be that guy, could not be anybody else,
(01:18:46):
and so they struggled to find people to play with him.
I don't think that's the case with Lebron. Guys generally,
like the idea of playing with le Bron, maybe the
idea more than the practice of playing with le Bron.
The problem is that you've got to get a coach
that he he wants to buy into, that he wants
to play for, and you've got to get a coach
that other people want to play for. I do think
it's a real thing, this um uh this you know,
(01:19:11):
agents saying you don't want to play for Team Lebron,
And I do think the Lakers are right to be
sort of cautious about it. On the other hand, just
like a trade, you gotta be cautious, but you also
gotta be smart. You gotta go for things at some
point in time like what are what what is the counter?
What is the other possibility? Like, sure, you could be
seen as Team Lebron, but you could also be seen
(01:19:32):
as a complete dysfunctional dumpster fire, which is what you're
seeing as now. So uh, you know, Nick right just said, hey,
look maybe you can get Kyrie. Now, I think it's
a possibility. I would have told you four months ago,
no way, he wants no part of that drama. And
I would still say that he probably doesn't either. He
doesn't probably doesn't want the drama even now. But Kemba
(01:19:55):
Walkers and maybe you know or does Kemba Walker want
to go to the Knicks? And Kyrie come is here? Me?
Carry does not want to make movies? Is there a
better place? I wasn't aware there's a better place to
make movies than in Hollywood. So the whole thing is fascinating,
But I don't think you trade Lebron yet? Do you
consider you always consider every possible option. Do you pull
off that's completely different? But what a mess? What an
(01:20:21):
abject disaster? Uh? Yes, Ryan Music? Any chance that it's
Lebron James at this point, who would consider asking for
a trade? Uh? Yeah, yeah, just with how bad and
how much of a disaster this has all been for him.
He's like, man, I didn't sound out any of this yet. Yeah,
(01:20:42):
the problem is like the wife and the kids and
the lifestyle. And he's like, you know, you kind of
get in on it, you kind of like you know,
you know, do I think he would he would go.
Do I think he has. I'm sure there are people
in his camp like, dude, let's get out of here.
This is a disaster, and he's like, where are we
gonna go? We're gonna go. I can't go back to
(01:21:03):
Miami like that'd be seen his groveling with pat Riley
New York. He doesn't want to work for he doesn't
want to take money from that dude. Brooklyn didn't want them.
I don't think I don't think the Clippers want them, Like,
where's it gonna go? Yes from us, any chance that
they revisit Lou they come back to him at all.
I thought when it came out it was all negotiating.
(01:21:26):
That's what I thought. I thought when it came out,
it is all negotia. It's all just kind of negotiation tactic.
But I was wrong. I was wrong. You know. I
just thought this is two sides and they're kind of
dug in here, and that's what they want to do, is,
you know, negotiate in the public. And I was wrong.
(01:21:51):
I think this one is this one is enough of
the details have gotten out to You're like, yeah, they're
not going back once the details get out. You're like
Oh they're not. Yeah, that's that's over. That one is over.
So to your answer your question, that's when I was
driving home and this initially broke. I thought it was
simply Tyron Lou using the media to negotiate. Then when
(01:22:11):
both sides said it's over, it felt over. Tyrie Irving
has become something he never thought he would. It's the
same thing you may think you'll never become, but you will.

on this hour, the NBA champion who took down the
l A Lakers, and of course the guy who won
an n c A championship as well. Ripple give us
(01:23:38):
his unique perspective on the NBA playoffs. You know, Kyrie
iring Is, it's kind of becoming his dad, and I
know his dad was a player. I'm not talking about
his dad, dad. I'm talking about Lebron James, who kind
of pats him on the head and acts like he's
his big brother or his father calls him a kid,
admires Zim, gives him the business every now and again,
(01:24:04):
tells him advice. And sure enough, what did Kyrie Irving
do earlier this year? He picked up the phone, He
called his dad and said, Dad, you were right. So
we all say to our dads, if you have a
relationship with your dad. My late father I remember telling
you know, he used to tell me things that that
I would even to this day. I mean other times
when I said you were right, there were just times
(01:24:26):
when he looked at me and I knew he knew.
I knew that he was right. And there are things
that are honestly like, if I think of things that
I should have said to my father, it's one of them,
is like, you were right about a lot of things,
about a lot of things. I want to write about everything. Um,
And we had some epic arguments, but it's funny. So
(01:24:48):
I I coached my kid and tried coachman everything because
I'm not trying to live vicuriously through my son. You know,
some people would say, like, well, you coach your kid,
You're like, now, I don't want to. I don't want
him live. I want him to get I want to
give him the opportunity to experience so many things that
I experienced on his own. On his own. Um, like, uh,
(01:25:13):
he wants to play tackle football. He's never played. He
plays flag football. And you know, one of the one
of my favorite things about football, this is one of
the best is and at this age you get it
more than when you get to a little bit a
little bit older, but you get like a breakaway run.
You get your helmet, you get your shoulder pads, you
(01:25:33):
get the ball, you're breathing, your mouthpiece, and you have
the limit of your your your face mask, right, So
it's almost like you're seeing the world through a TV lens.
And when you I remember a lot of times I
played quarterback as a kid. You fake a handoff, you
(01:25:54):
run a bootleg, and you get to the corner. You
get to the edge and now of a sudden, there's
no one in between you and the goal line, and
there's like thirty five forty yards to go, and you
kind of looked to your left and you think you
can beat the guys. He's taking the angle and you're
and you look kind of behind you and you see
(01:26:14):
guys chasing you and they dive and they miss. I
think it's one of the greatest feeling. To me. That's
a better feeling is where I've dunked a basketball. I've
done that. I actually think that's a better feeling than
dunking a basketball. But it's something I'd love for my
son to appreciate, Like and into the end zone and
turning around and everybody yelling at you. That's amazing. Um,
(01:26:40):
But I I coached my son, and occasionally I'll say
something to him and I'll stop myself, or maybe I
won't stop myself, or afterwards, I'll be walking in to
the car, I feel like my dad, or I'm driving
home from a game that he played in I did
not and he lost. I did not, and I'm like
(01:27:02):
replaying the game over and over my head like my
dad used to, like, man, when did I? And there's
even a TV commercial about becoming your parents. You know,
why don't we become our parents? What Kyrie Irving is saying,
the aloofness by which he handles himself, the really really
weird press conferences, the kind of shutting down emotionally, Like
(01:27:26):
that's classic Lebron James. That's what he did against the
Dallas Mavericks, or just all of a sudden he might
have said he was still in it. I don't know
if you guys remember when they played the Dallas Mavericks
and he had that terrible NBA Finals, right, Remember they
(01:27:49):
won on the road and then they made fun of
Dirk Novitski after shoot around because Dirk was was sick.
Because remember that they were feeling really good about themselves,
super confident and then all of a sudden that confidence
just evaporated, eviscerated. That's what happened to the Boston Celtics
Game one. They're like feeling great, game too, like, ah,
(01:28:12):
we stole game, we stole home court. We're good and
then it just got weird. Right yesterday, they asked him
about his future, and he's like, I'm just focused on
getting home safely. Like what I don't like the I'm
just I don't like the pass or next question, but
(01:28:32):
I would prefer next question as opposed to I'm just
thinking about getting home safely, like people have to get you.
Are you really concerned about this sort of thing? Like
was this the seven three seven max thing? Like, I
what are you talking about? We just asked you about
your future and your kind of process, like and we
can all the all these questions can be. When he
(01:28:55):
was asked about the twenty two shots, he simply could
have said, like, I don't think of this is not hard.
I don't think numbers of shots matter. Quality of shots matter.
I gotta take better shots. We all gotta take better shots,
gotta execute better. Really good team and we gotta limit
their quality shots. These are all easy answers. But he
made the answers so much harder than they needed to be.
(01:29:17):
But that's what Lebron does. He holds court and he
says one thing, and they contradicts himself two weeks later.
So Lebron does. And of course, just like I did
with my dad, you've down probably with your parents. He
picked at the phone is like you were right, you
were right. So I think I think Kyrie in many ways,
(01:29:44):
has become the walking embodiment of Lebron James and the differences.
Lebron has been able to get away with it because
he's Lebron brand is better, He's won a title, He's
won a couple of titles, He's bigger and stronger, so
he can get away with just playing bullyball. But you
(01:30:09):
mixed Lebron's inability to be normal and to relate to
him being with Kobe Bryant's like this is, by the way,
that was Kobe Bryant's mama mentality, Like Kobe Bryant's answer
to every problem was shoot the basketball, right Kobe Bryant
for people, And look, this is not defaming Kobe Bryant.
(01:30:31):
We all know it to be true. I love how
Twitter and NBA worlds like Kobe was the clutchest ever,
he was amazing. Can somebody tell me what the when?
When was the Kobe moment in the NBA Finals? Let
me know, Like the most famous play that Kobe made
was in the Western Conference finalcy through the alley to
(01:30:54):
shack right on that incredible comeback against the Portland Trouble Edge.
You guys remember that that's a famous play. But but
Kobe wasn't the first three times they won. He wasn't
the finals m v P against the Celtics like he
was awful in Game seven, awful, selfish, I mean he
was Ronald Tests won that game. It was one of
(01:31:16):
those like, yeah, we'll get it, We'll give him the
m v P. Whatever. Kobe Bryant's answered everything was shoot
much like did you ever do this in college where
you take like a Scantron test? You know, and if
you didn't know the answer, what were you always supposed
to answer? See? Right? You know, you a B, C
(01:31:36):
or D. You always went to see I don't know why,
but most people said you go with C. Maybe it's
because it's sees for degrees. I don't know, but everybody said,
you go with C. Kobe Bryant was at like, what's
two pas four tupas to shoot? What is the square
root of pie times eight? Shoot? What do you do
(01:31:58):
when you're down five? And shoot? And that's what Kyrie
Irving did, like the two most influential people in his
basketball career, Kobe Bryant Lebron James, and he embodied the
bad habits and bad qualities of both of them last night.
I'm gonna shoot as often and be as aloof on
the court as Kobe was, and then I'm going to
(01:32:21):
have this weird, really weird approach to answering fairly, earnest,
average questions after it and then walk away like they're
the weird ones, not me. No, now you're pretty much
the weird one. That was just the whole thing was odd.
NBA champion Rip Hamilton joins the show. Up coming next,

Hamilton's is an n c A A champion and NBA champion,
and he joins us today to talk about his work
(01:33:26):
this season with Intel, True VR and the NBA on
t T N t VR, taking fans courtside from anywhere.
Rip will get to the virtual reality stuff which you
guys are doing, which is amazing. And a second, but
let's start with the Celtics. Is it as simple as
Kyrie Irving isn't the leader? I think they've got a
(01:33:46):
lot going on over there in Boston, but I think
that this summer is going to start in with him.
I thought that one all year long. It just seems
like they've been on a roller coaster ride. Guys trying
to understand their role. You know, you got young You've
got the younger guys that are ready for stardom you
got to You got Gordon Hayward trying to come back
(01:34:08):
off off an injury and still be initiated into the offense.
Uh brass Stevens rushing his process and putting them in
the starting lineup when I thought that, hey, you know what,
maybe wait a little bit, because you've got young guys
that can fit that role and play big right now.
So that's that's all challenging when you come when you're
looking at from a locker room perspective, because nowadays, when
(01:34:32):
you look at the game, you look at the lead.
It's different than when I played. Like the veteran players
were the guys that were usually were the stars and
they were what you know what I mean something were
thirty Like you don't read it your prime to you
years old. Now now the stars in our game are
so and when you're looking at the Boston Celtics with
(01:34:55):
the success that they had last year with Rosier and
Tatum and round, them guys are ready, like they're ready
for stardom. So it's hard to you know, hold them
back when knowing that you've got Kyrie Irving and going
Hereward about to be added to the team. Uh uh
at four strength next season. Um, okay, So I mean
(01:35:19):
do we assume, based upon how things are going, that
there's I mean Kyrie picked the microphone for the season, like, man,
if you guys have me, I'm coming back. That appears
to be the opposite. Any chance he returns, Yes, I
do think there's a chance. And the reason why I think, uh, Doug,
is in order for Boston Celtics to win a championship
(01:35:40):
or any championship team, you need a closer, right and
Kyrie is probably arguably top five closer in our game
right now. Right. Uh, So I do think they need
Kyrie Irvin. But the question mark is can Kyrie Irvin
be your best player on your team? Right in Cleveland,
(01:36:00):
he had the luxury of playing with Lebron, Like when
Kyrie would you know, when Lebron needs to sell him down,
Lebron would play the point guard position right and move
him off the ball, allow him to just score. Right
in Boston, they didn't have that, right, Like Kyrie is
now in the Elder Statesman on that team, like everybody
looked at him like nobody's gonna pull him to the
(01:36:21):
sign and be like hey, all right, you know what,
run this or run that. So I think it was
UH growing pains for him being in that situation, and
he talked about it to UH with the call that
he made the Lebron James earlier in the season. So
I just think that this year was a big time
learning situation and in order to win the championship, you
gotta go through your bumps. You gotta go through your
(01:36:42):
speed bumps. Like no one just automatic just wins wins
it just because, so it's always a possibility. I mean,
brass Stevens, I still believe he's one of the better
coaches in our league. But uh, I think it's gonna
take you know, from time and from a chemistry standpoint
that the guys on the floor gotta trust each other, right,
it showed all season long that they didn't really trust
(01:37:03):
each other. I'd agree with you on on just about
every point. I'd love to find holes to pick in
your argument, but I can't. I like, I felt like
it wasn't it wasn't a good fit for him as
a coach, and the pieces didn't fit together. And yeah,
I think you're saying he's screwing up his process. I
think that was accurate. They went for it and I
think most people would have gone for it if they
were in that position. But you do, you know, teams
(01:37:26):
win champions as much as we we come to think
the NBA is like fantasy sports, like whoever has the
best players wins. But that's just not the case. Just
not yeah, it's it's it's never the case because, like
you said, individuals don't win championships, right, like like my
team and uh in Detroit, right they are Everybody always say, oh,
you guys didn't have no superstars, you got all this
(01:37:48):
and then and I say to myself, Shed Wallace was
a problem, like like like a good problem, like ros
C Wallace. It was probably the most talented player that
I played with in my career. Right, So we had
guys on the team that could easily you know, been
(01:38:09):
fighting for m v P every year, right, But if
we if if we did that, then we wouldn't be
able to put our team in position to win a
world championship because everybody wouldn't be involved. You look at
the Gold State Wards, the reason why the great year.
They got great talent, but that ball pop, like everybody
gets to touch it, everybody gets to feel that everybody
(01:38:30):
has a role. Everyone everybody understands each other. Everybody knows
what each other likes and dislike. Like when me and
Chauncey played together, Chauncey knew where I was at on
the floor. Every time down the floor, I knew where
he was gonna be, and I know where tay Shawn
was going to be. So chemistry and playing together and
understanding each other and sharing the ball and well and
willing to sacrifice you know, your game, your brands, because
(01:38:54):
that's the big thing in the NBA, your brand, right,
So you're able to You're you're willing to sacrifice all
that for one thing, and that's a championship and that's
what it should be about. Anyway, Um, did you think
Katie Pop just kills when you're watching last night? Say
it again, I couldn't hear you. Did you think kad
popes achilles when you're watching last night? You know what?
(01:39:14):
You scared me? Right, And it was you know because
any time when a guy shoots right and it kind
of looks back like somebody kicked them, or like somebody
like stepped on their foot or whatever whatever, that's the
first thing that comes to mind when you talk to
people that tore their Achilles, like, Oh, somebody kicking me
in the back of my foot? Right, I popped my
(01:39:37):
plan of fasciitis, similar similar reactions, Oh somebody kicking me
in the back of my foot? What happened? First thing
I thought was Achilles because I heard so many stories
about it, But it was my It was my my
plane of fasciitis. Now they're reporting what it's a calf right,
So yes, I'm scared. I don't know if they're giving
(01:39:57):
us all the information, but the way it it looked
a lot more serious than what their their report. If
everyone's looking at this from a Golden State, can they
still win without him? I'm looking at it from Houston,
like they don't have DeMarcus Cousins and they don't have
Kevin Durant, and I'd get the last night it wasn't
like it was an even game when he went out,
(01:40:18):
and the energy of the building whatever, isn't an indictment
on Houston. They can't win this series considering what Golden
State doesn't have in the constructive construct of that team.
Absolutely right, Like everybody talks about all the Golden States,
canna know, we gotta start talking about Houston here because
they got the pressure on him. How about James hard
and Chris Paul, Like they got the pressure on them, right,
(01:40:42):
So people are always looking to say, oh, you know,
because Steph Curry, can Clay Thompson, Dreymarker, can they get
First of all, Steph Curry is a two time MVP, right,
so he when Kevin Durant came there, Steph Curry was
willing to take a back seat for who Kevin Durant? Right,
kind of similar to what the way Wade did in
Miami when Lebron James came out right took it back
(01:41:03):
to allow you know, uh, Lebron to kind of take over,
you know, ownership of that team. Steph Curry still got
higher levels he could still achieve with with no KD
out there, So it might be limited, you know, Katie, Uh,
Steph Cray might go out there, might own shoot Tim
Tive team shots the game no k D. He might
shoot thirty right and him and him and Clay Thompson
(01:41:24):
has arguably the best two shooters in the game. So
they could still get hot, but their chances are still
the same. But the pressure for James Harden and Chris Paul,
you know, and the team they have over there. Houston
is man. They they they got a lot of pressure
on their shoulders to come out and win these next
two games. If Kevin durantars to play um it did
(01:41:45):
feel like as much as like you know hard and
had a little bit of disappearing act. Part of it
was the Golden State change. How they're playing defensively because
they had Luney in the game. Now they had some
rin protection that that is that fair that they you know,
they basically guarding with two it's posed to many other
points in the series they've been guardening with just one guy.
Oh absolutely, And and that's what the playoffs is about.
(01:42:08):
It's it's a game of a justice, right. You can't
you can't show the guy. You can't show the team
the same thing every time because teams are too good.
James Harden is way too talented, you know, uh uh
to He'd be able to dissect and figure out different
ways that the team's guard. So you have to constantly
switch up the strategy on trying to defend him, you know,
(01:42:31):
making him think. I think that's the key and me
as a score playing in the NBA, you know when
teams will switch it up down I gotta think. Now,
I can't just react because I gotta think, uh a
little bit to see how they exactly they're playing me.
So certain shots wouldn't be there every time down the floor.
So it's the same thing with James Harden. They're trying
it's a it's a chess game. Riff Hamilton joining us
(01:42:53):
in the Dug Outlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
so you're doing this VR stuff, the virtual reality stuff.
For people who haven't it, what's it like, it's it's
it's actually pretty cool, man, Like, uh, Intel Sports brings
fans closer to the game, right and you're kind of
like watching the game and well, you're watching the game
in virtual reality. And I always say that like like
(01:43:15):
it kind of brings you in to to the arena
from Wahington, from the goggles, the Oculust goggles, and they
also have a Samsung device. You're kind of watching the
game through that and it kind of gives you to
feel like you're sitting in that from row seat on
the court. And I was a kid that couldn't afford
at the time, my mom and that couldn't afford the
floor seat. But I wish something like this was out
(01:43:35):
because it kind of gives you that experience that you're
you're in the game and you can watch it from
different camera angles. Like like we all go to the
game to say, all right, I wonder how the view
is over there on the floor seats behind the basket,
So I wonder, well, how how does it feel to
watch the game from center court? So now with all
the different camera angles, it allows the viewer to to
(01:43:57):
to really have control of their experience when watching the game. Alminant,
let me ask you about the Lakers. What do you
do now? Oh my goodness, ain't that the question? That's
the question of the day, right, right? I mean when
you look at the Lakers, man, the one thing about it,
you still have the best player of basketball, right, you
(01:44:18):
still got Lebron James, right, And Lebron James has has
been able to take teams that really haven't didn't have
a whole lot of talent all the way to the
NBA Finals. Yeah, he's a little older, you know, but
people forget that, Hey, before that he got hurt. Uh.
Earlier this season, we were talking about Lebron James maybe
being m v P and maybe the Lakers being the
(01:44:40):
top three seat now, I just think that right now,
there's they got way too many hands in the cookie jar,
right and they're not all on the same page from
a management standpoint, I mean, how do you let Matthew
Johnson just walk away? Like like Matthew Johnson's all time great,
like like that's the reason why Lebron James came Tyroneolu, Like,
(01:45:01):
how do you not give him five year deal when
you just get Luke the five year deal? Uh Monty
Williams just got a five year deal going to uh
Phoenix Son like ty Luke coach Lebron James. Ty Luke
got a World championship. So it's a lot of question
marks going on in La La land right now. But
how again, how do you fix it? Who do you hire?
(01:45:23):
Who can you hire that can stabilize things? Well, that's
that's the big question right now. I think that maybe
they might have to go get a veteran coach. I
mean you still hear Jason's Jason Kid's name in the mix.
You hear uh uh coach Woodson's name in the mix. Uh.
Guys that have NBA experienced, guys that know players, right,
(01:45:43):
Because when you're coaching the Lebron James team. You gotta
have a great relationship with Lebron James and he has
to respect you, right. I think that's the biggest key.
And you've got to be able to have that constant
communication with your star player. Right. So I think whoever
brings into that job Lebron James has to re act
right and the guys in the locker pool. I do
think they need to go out and get another big
(01:46:04):
term free agent. Right Lebron James can't do it on
his own. I think his uses, his useless rate is
out the roof with his time on the court and
how much the ball is in his hands, Like Lebron James,
this is just doesn't come on the court and just
sits in the corner for two or three possessions down
the floor trying to get rest like that's not how
he plays. So I do believe that they got to
(01:46:25):
go out and get a star free agent. If it's
you know, Kawhi Leonard, if he's Jimmy Butler, maybe Kimball Walker.
You hear Kyrie Herve his name in the mix. You
he needs another guy that has that if factory that
can carry the team, uh for quarters, where he can
kind of get arrest because he's getting up there in age. Yeah, no,
I agree, And then the question becomes what can he
(01:46:46):
give you defensively for the season. He used to be
the ultimate racer. Now he kind of gotta hide him
and it's a it's a crazy deal. Listen, this VR
thing is awesome. More importantly, your commentary is on point.
Thanks much for doing this, rip PR said the good
talking to you, pleasure his mind of Hampton, great dude,
excellent analysts and our thanks to the folks at uh
NBA and t N t VR for allowing him to
(01:47:06):
come on with us. Let's get you to Dan Biregon
update and everything in sports Day when he got Doug.
A big update is on Kevin Durant. The Warriors forward
won't play again in this series against the Rockets. He'll
be reevaluated next week after the team announced today that
Durant suffered a calf strain in his right leg in
last night's Game five against Houston. Two games six is tonight.
Raptors and six Ers eight Eastern Raptors up three Tuesday
(01:47:28):
play in Philly. Portland's home to the Nuggets, but Denver's
up three two in the series tipping off at ten
thirty Eastern time. Let's get you caught up to date
with some day baseball. Rockies and Giants right now in
a slug fest at Cours eight five Rockies in the
sixth inning. Giants today place catch your buster posey on
the seven day concussion list A's and Red's right now
(01:47:48):
in the eighth inning. Cincinnati leads that game by a
score of three to nothing. Earlier, the Angels brought out
the bats in Detroit, topping the Tigers thirteen to nothing.
Still being delayed by ray in Cleveland has a five
thing lead on the White Sox that delayed in the
sixth inning in Cleveland. Cubs today with a win over
the Marlins four to one, and on the PGA Tour
a T and T Byron Nelson, Brooks kept currently two
(01:48:11):
shots back of the lead. He's at six under part
Denny McCarthy with the lead at eight under Tony Romo
even par through nine holes. We'll be back to the
Doug Gottlieb Joe in ten seconds. But first a word
from Farmers at Farmers Insurance, we know every windshield collision
has a unique sound. Beetle bird poop Drone seen it
covered it. Dr Farmers. We are farmers under written my
(01:48:33):
Farmers truck fire insurance, exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in
every state. M M. Look, I watched these things, and
I think between the Lakers and what they do is,
you know, so much of taking a job is about
believing that everybody has kind of the right idea in mind.
(01:48:55):
No sense in doing it if you don't. And I
think that's really what's happened with Tyron lou there. And look,
I don't think Tyron is a perfect coach. And I'm
not sure that it's just the idea of having Jason
Kidd or just the idea of having Kurt Rambis on
his staff, but both combined with why wouldn't you give
me a five year deal? Because I actually don't think
(01:49:17):
three years? Like, all right, listen, we're only gonna give
you three years. Let's bump up the money. You know,
we're willing to pay you eight in the third year.
We can pay you eight in the first year, and
we'll give you a shorter term deal. We'll give you
a bunch of money, but that's all we we we
want to see how it goes with you. And Lebron
and then the way in which you know, however they
(01:49:38):
relayed their info. However they relayed there, um, unless they're
their info, their their feedback. He was just like, I
don't I don't want to work here. I still think
it's probably a mistake for Tyler, Like, I think you
could have probably pulled this thing off where you use
(01:50:00):
it as a negotiation. He said, Hey, I'm gonna take
a step back from this. I don't think this negotiation
is where I need to be. But I also understand
where he's standing from, like, look, we talked about this.
There's no other real candidate. You zero did on me.
I had zero did. Like, we know about what I'm worth,
let's not talk to your it's in l A. There's
a lot of pressure. Remember Tyler stepped away. People forget
(01:50:22):
Tyler's last year coaching with the Calves. He stepped away
for health reasons. So I'm sure part of this is
like do I really need this when this is the
way they're gonna treat me. You gotta know who you're
gonna hire. And maybe the Lakers didn't want him and
or the Rambuses didn't want him, and that's why they
kind of low balled him and didn't push for longer
(01:50:42):
more years. I look at the Boston Celtics and I'm
gonna disagree with most people. I thought the risk was
worth it. You know, people forget that when they went
for it last year or a year and a half,
a hour, two years ago, whatever it was. You know,
they got Gordon Hayward, he was the prize free agent.
(01:51:03):
They got him. Then they traded for Kyrie, which was
a great trade. Even look back at the trade now,
it's a great trade. Great trade. Combine that with getting
Jayson Tatum instead of Marquet Folds. Awesome. They killed it.
They did an amazing job. Couldn't have foreseen Gordon Hayward
getting hurt in the first quarter of the first game
(01:51:25):
that he played, could you, of course not. And you
couldn't foresee Kyrie irving. It wasn't necessarily even hurt. It
was you know, the past injury to his knee, and
first getting the wire taken out, and then taking the
screwise taken out, and then making an improbable run. Like
all of these things run foreseen and had this been
the second year where they were able to grow together,
(01:51:46):
the result probably would have been better. So I disagree
with people who say, well, it's a failed experiment, and boss,
no it's not. No, it's not. I don't believe it's
a failed experiment. I do believe that it was the
right thing to do at the time. It's just the
(01:52:07):
chemistry did not work out. And so you have to
move on and figure out what to do now and
ask for Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors, this
is how runs come to an end. This is the
second major injury that the Warriors have sustained. We don't
know if and when DeMarcus Cousins come back. We don't
know if and when Kevin Durant comes back. But doesn't
(01:52:29):
it tell us more about the Rockets right now? You
I told you all year, I wasn't a big believer
that DeMarcus Cousins would be in late in the game.
But what he gave them the ability to do was
in the second quarter, play some backups and throw the
ball to Marcus and let him eat. In the third
quarter of the early fourth quarter, throw the devoted Marcus
and let him eat. There's a guy, and last time
he played the Rockets, he ate them up. Just give
(01:52:53):
him a different look. Score some points. Let everybody else
take a breath. They lose that now they is Durant.
I'm this tells us more because look, I get people
who will say, well, if they win without Kevin Durant,
it tells you they didn't need Kevin Durant anyway, Like, no,
it doesn't. It means you could. You can always win
on guts and you have to elite shooters and you
(01:53:16):
got you know, you still got one game at home
to win. You got Draymond Green, you got some cable players.
If you lose and you're the Warriors, you sit there
and go like it just tells us you were too depleted.
No one plays without two starters and wins an NBA championship.
But if the Rockets lose, it tells us so much
(01:53:37):
more about the Rockets. And then like wait, wait, wait, wait, right,
you get two shots at the Warriors with just Stephen
Clay and Draymond and you know there's no bench. They
can't play Bogett, you can't play in the series. They
haven't been playing, you know, Quinn Cook or Jordan's Bell
like they're going out it with Sean Livingston who's on
(01:53:57):
his last leg, with Andrea Guadala who hurt you the
first couple of games, but not as much the last
couple of games. Really like Jonis your reb Cookvan Looney,
like this guy's don't scare you. If you're the Rockets
you lose this game? What a disaster? What a disaster
(01:54:20):
that would be? All right? Coming up next, who will
be the Lakers next head coach? We'll discuss on the
Doug Godlip Show. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug dot Leaps Show weekdays at noon eastern three

(01:54:44):

We get you do as many stories as possible. We
call it the Press, the Press Doug Ali Shows by
Discovery Car. We treat you like you treat you. What
do you got, damn dog? We got a bunch of stuff,
(01:55:06):
but we'll start in the NBA Warriors forward Kevin Durant.
The diagnosis has been confirmed, right Calf strain suffered in
last night's game against the Rockets, who missed the rest
of the series with Houston, as the team says, Durant
will be reevaluated next week. Yeah, that that does not
sound good. That will be reevaluated next week. That means
he's out for the remaining two games. Um, let's see
(01:55:28):
what happens game six? Did they go for it? Do
they play everybody and see you know where they stand
the started the fourth quarter and try and go for it.
That's what I think they'll do. And then game seven,
does he try and pull a Willis Read. I don't know.
I'm fascinated. Lakers. According to The l A Times interviewing
Frank Vogel today for their head coaching vacancy, Yeah, supposedly,
(01:55:49):
Frank Vogel is um really well regarded by Kurt Rambis
and I guess Linda Rambis I like. I like him,
but I mean didn't work out in Orlando and they're
her after he left. He did a very good job
in in Indy. I think he's a good guy. I
think he's a good coach. I think Lebron probably respects him,
But I don't know. Sprank Vogel fixture problems. I don't
(01:56:11):
see it that. It is a bunch of news from
the NFL. Let's start. The Pacific Northwest Seahawks today release
safety Cam Chancellor and wide receiver Doug Baldwin with failed
physical designations. Chancellor not really a surprise, he didn't play
at all. In Baldwin only a little bit of a
surprise considering what we heard after the draft that he
(01:56:33):
was considering retirement following US three offseason surgeries. Yeah, the
I mean Cam chance So we knew this was coming. Um,
Doug Baldwin, we had been told that it is coming.
So like basically you have what Bobby Wagner on one side,
and Russell Wilson and the other and those are the
last the Mohicans kJ right, Yeah, that's about it. Yeah, wow,
(01:56:56):
the NFL man not for long as lutely. Telvin Smith
gonna take off. The Jaguars linebacker made an announcement on
social media saying that he's not gonna play football in
the nineteen season. This was news to the Jaguars, who
released a statement saying that they won't comment on Smith's
announcement except to say that they need to have a
(01:57:17):
conversation with Smith to understand his situation and circumstances. Yeah,
I mean maybe he wants to be talked out of it,
maybe he wants a new contract, or maybe he just
mentally needs to recharge. It does seem early in the
early in the process to be like, yeah, I'm gonna
take the year off, like it doesn't start till August. Dude,
can't she like going hike uh Machu pichu and come back.
(01:57:39):
I'll refresh. Well too, If the Jaguars had at least
gotten the heads up on this two weeks ago, maybe
they would have you know, planned for it in the
draft as well. Think just yeah, interesting story that isn't
close to being over in Jacksonville hotel back Up Jr.
Took some heat and speaking at the met Gala earlier
this week, saying at the Browns are gonna be the
(01:58:01):
next Patriots. Well now, he went on Instagram to try
to clarify his statements, saying, quote, just to clarify, I
will always aspire to be great. I haven't reached that
point in the NFL, but that's what we all chase,
and I'm going to continue to work to help the
Browns become great. I never meant the Browns are the
new Patriots, are going to be the new Patriots. I
just have great respect for what they've done, but definitely
(01:58:22):
recognize the work that has to be done to get there. Well, no,
that's what he said. Yeah, I do feel bad for him.
He just kind of you know, I understand what he's saying.
I just sometimes you don't need to say it. But okay,
I mean, like, look there, the the Patriots are there,
(01:58:44):
the squad that everybody dreams to be consistently successful. Um,
but they are so far from that. He did he
did dress similar to pet the Patriot the former logo
on their helmet at that gal Uh. Yes, a mix
of a mix of absolutely everything. Oh I've got a
(01:59:06):
present uh for you and Ryan music. Yeah you're ready. Yeah,
this one's out the deep left field and that is
long gone. Big fly for Albert pool Holes career r
beyond number two thousand that on Fox Sports West Oorry guys,
there's more Stella shoots are not the deep ride field
(01:59:27):
back to the walland god, he's done it again. Now.
That was awesome. Second big fly of the day for
tom with Lostella. Tommy Boy Angels beat the Tigers today.
Thirteen to nothing on Fox Sports West. They take two
or three from Brad Osmus's former crew. Uh did uh
(01:59:50):
did Mike Trump get out of his little mini slump?
That's the big question. Trout has not been hitting all
that much of late. Still getting on base on but
not not hitting that much. And we'll see what Showtime
show Heyo Tani back in the lineup. Uh, Trout ends
up with one hit, one walk, one run scored, Showtime show,
Heyo Tani had two hits and an RBI, walked once
(02:00:13):
as well, so on base three out of five times
he got to the dish. But Angels have They're not good,
but they're surprisingly not terrible, so that's good. Doug. This
was the discussion in the studio at one point where
the Angels were up thirteen to nothing in the eighth inning,
top of the eighth inning, and this game was in Detroit.
Why would you still be at the ballpark? Like is
(02:00:34):
there a reason? Like if you were a figure team
is getting crushed, like they haven't even scored on a
day game on a weekday, why would you even stay
at thirteen nothing in the eighth inning? Is there any reason? Um?
That was our answer as well. We we had not
I don't I. I don't know. It's a very good question.
(02:00:56):
Why would you stay? I don't know. Yeah, it's not
like it's it's not like uh, it's not like one
of those games. It's like a great game like nine
eight or eight eight and goes to extrain things and
you're like, ah, all right, I'll stay to see the end,
you know how it ends. It's not even run the
bases after the game day like it's the Thursday afternoon
in early May. I don't know. I don't know how
(02:01:18):
you would go to a game, let alone stay of
the game. But we are on it's a great place
to hide from the cops. That's true. That's true. Tony
Robo right now, even par through eleven holes, well let's
say ten, because he's got about a three footer for
par on the eleventh hole at the A T and
T Byron Nelson, he is currently eight shots back of
(02:01:40):
the lead tied for right now is Robo playing on
a sponsors exemptions out of Dallas, and this is of
course he plays a lot. So like if there's everyone
in which he could have a decent showing, this could
be the one where he could have a decent showing. Um,
I just want to know if Tony Romo knows what
he's going to do on each shot before he takes
each shot. Like they all say, like I'm gonna hit
(02:02:03):
this three iron, I'm gonna hit it, you know. So
I'm gonna hit the seven iron seventy five and it's
gonna land right there. But when Romo says it, somehow
it seems to hit a little cut off a TV
tower on sixteen. See how that works? Finally, guys, soccer
legend David Beckham lost his license for six months in
England after he pleaded guilty to charges of using a
(02:02:24):
cell phone while driving. Very strict across the pond when
it comes to driving and using a cell phone, So
he lost his license for six months. Beckham, No, Beckham
has the worst voice of any superstars, even worse than
Mike Tyson's. Right, it's terrible. No, I would just not
(02:02:46):
be in England for six months, right, No, it seems
about good bag it out there and pressed the press.
Uber and lift on strike in England. That's the that's
my big question, right, And it'd be a lot worse
if Uber and Lip run strike in England. I think
the seventies, sixers winning night Boys. I do you guys
(02:03:06):
dispute that music? Raptors with the clothes out, Raptors, sixers
with doug Um, don't go with me. I've been bad.
What about you? Ramos? Where you like all? I like
to raptors? Check me on The Dan Patrick Show with
Jason Spit tomorrow morning. This is the doug Otlip Show.
