are you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America?

(00:28):
Doug gott Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Yesterday we reacted
to Many Machado signing a huge contract today. We'll get
into some baseball a little bit later. Whether or not
the Yankees have suddenly gotten wise even with the depth
of their pockets, and what it means for Bryce Harper
will get to that. Also, I think people have actually

(00:51):
actually really hurt their argument on the gotta pay the
players because people want to see Zion play tonight argument.
They all come out of the woodwork anytime there's a
college basketball game you actually pay attention to, even though
there's been an entire season which no one's paid attention to.
We'll get to that upcoming, but let's start with the

(01:11):
news of the moment, the news of the day. If
you listen to our updates, and you should. That's because
we got the great Dan Buyer updating us. Kevin Colbert,
who's the general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers, announced today
that they would not tag Levy on Bell, instead to
allow Levian Bell to walk out the door as a
free agent without the fourteen point five million dollars he
could have collected last year as a franchise Taggi and surprise, surprise,

(01:35):
they're gonna want to trade Antonio Brown, but they're not
gonna give him away. Like, look, we're gonna take a
twenty one million dollar capit. We're not taking your seven
six five They even fourth round draft pick. Do I
think they'll get a first I don't, just because generally,
when you dump a receiver, a guy who's gonna want
a new contract, no matter how talented he is, usually
don't get a first or even a second round pick

(01:57):
for it. But we'll see as as we now know
the details of that meeting, which are as follows. Dude,
what are you doing? We want to get rid of you,
you want to get rid of us? Why are you
hurting your trade value? That's only making it harder for
us to do what you'd like to do, which is
move on with your and we'd like to do, which
is move on with your career. You know, look, I'm

(02:22):
just gonna sit here and tell you that I think
both of them either got really bad advice or didn't
get enough advice. That's what it comes down to, because
Levy on Bell, no matter how much he gets this
year on the open market, and it's likely not to
equal out to the amount that he was reportedly offered
initially or even secondarily by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the fact

(02:46):
is that once he gives away the chance to make
fourteen point five million dollars like he could have time
played fourteen point five million dollars guaranteed and then gotten
a new deal, that's money he will never make again.
And I've I've heard this argument from people who say, well,
you know, I mean, you know, look, you want to

(03:06):
get right down to it. They've got enough money, They've
made enough money. Um. And while Manny Machado may make
enough money, and Lebron James will make enough money, and
Anthony Davis may make enough money, the fact is that
where these guys are, and with all the the hands
out and the the pay payments that need to be

(03:28):
made from agents to publicists to simply taxes. That's not
enough money. Can you live on it? Yeah, but you
create a lifestyle that you live in and after football,
there's a lot of adjustments that have to be made.
Antonio Brown. Could he resurrect his his image and work
in television radio. Probably. He's well spoken, he's interesting, although

(03:51):
the issues off the field, especially with women, make him
toxic and probably unhirable. The fact is that that resurrection
is only a Super Bowl win away. But these guys
are not in the place of, Oh, they got enough money,
it doesn't really matter. They can walk away from it.

(04:11):
You gotta get another Comma by your name for that.
It's Doug gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's
really when it comes down to. And you've seen this
before in the NFL. I know that Dolphins didn't make
the playoffs, but I I truly believe that is more
about the fact that Ryan tanney Hill was hurt for
half the year than it was the Dolphins didn't enjoy

(04:31):
the experience of not having their running back, their wide receiver,
and their best defensive player, all of whom were jettison
within the last five weeks of last season into the
off season, all of them were gone, and they had
better chemistry, they had better culture, and they had a
better football team. That's the trend in the National Football League.

(04:55):
You can say, no, it's not, but the truth is,
look around the league. Sure the Rams have tried to
buck that trend, and they went out and traded for
Marcus Flowers and they got to keep to leave, and
they got in Dominican sue, and they did get all
the way to the Super Bowl. I'm not even gonna
hold against them the fact that they're one penalty away
from being from losing to the Saints. No, no no, I'm

(05:16):
not gonna do that, Nor the fact that they kind
of survived at home against the Eagles. But they are
the exception to the rule. Look at the Kancity Chiefs.
Was their defense bad? Sure wasn't as good as it
needed to be, and it probably would have been better
statistically if they had Marcus Peters back there. But you

(05:39):
know what, they had two picks and nearly had a
third against the Empatriots. And the fact that their defense
was bad, but you never heard a whisper about Bob
Sutton being fired before he was fired speaks to the fact,
they didn't have Marcus Peters, who has seen as a
maucontent the year before, their chemistry, their culture was better.
If you don't believe me, just look at the changes
that were made from last year to the year in

(06:00):
Kansas City and then the results that followed. Of course,
we know of the Patriots. You look around the league,
and this is a trend. It's It's also not any
different than the trend in baseball, which the Padres tried
to buck yesterday, which is why put all of your

(06:21):
eggs in one basket? Why Ley, Why lock up all
of your salary into a couple of guys because they
may one get injured, two might have bad years, or three.
You can just get more production or equal production for
two lesser pieces at far less the rate. Sports has
finally gotten smart, finally gotten smart. It's interesting. Um, I

(06:46):
don't know. I don't know how we'll fix business, for example,
I don't, but this is kind of a mirror of
what's happened in business until we can figure out a
way where American companies can spend less on their employees.
Of course, you're gonna have call centers overseas, you know,

(07:07):
I don't I don't. I don't know what to do
with it. I mean, I guess you gotta have tariffs
and taxes and do things that are that are seen
as ugly and and maybe on American order to do it.
But all major businesses do is the exact same thing
that sports teams are doing, which is how do we
get labor to cost less and still get the same productivity.

(07:28):
That's business one oh one. And we can act like
it's this incredibly sinister thing for NFL teams and Major
League Baseball teams and NBA teams to do, but it's
smart business. And all these men and all these men
who own these sports teams, that's all they're executing. They
didn't go to sports school. They went to business school

(07:49):
and they killed it there. And now they're looking at
their books going, wait a second, this is dumb. This
is dumb. Why should we operate with an operating loss
and we can operate with an operating win make money
while we own a team which is gaining in value.
You'll hear this from fans and writers all the time.
They'll get to the well, you know, look, the value

(08:10):
and a team is the fact that you you may
lose money in the day to day. But you you
you make money based upon that value of a team. Well,
first of all, half the league in both football, more
in base more in baseball and basketball, and basketball especially
the league has been turned over. So you have new
owners that are committed to the paying in the billions

(08:30):
of dollars and they just started on the team. And
even if they have haven't just owned the team. Maybe
it's a family business. They don't want to sell it knowingly.
Do they not want to sell it and cash in
because then they're out of pro sports. But they want
to make money on the day to day and this
is how you do it. So between the change and culture,

(08:52):
the implementing of basic business principles, the implementing of analytics,
which tells you you're better off getting who are three
guys for the price of one and getting different specialists.
You can sit here and tell me, well, that's not smart. No,
that that actually is really smart. It's not sinister. It's business,
and it's smart business at that. And the Pittsburgh Steelers

(09:15):
have always been someone who's allowed star players to walk
out the door knowing or believing that they can evaluate
the next guy who comes in and makes less money,
and that's the gamble that they're taking. That's that's that's
the absolute gamble that's they're taking. Stut Golab Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. It's brought to you by Farmers.

bell end up and what's a reasonable about the money
that he'll sign for? Plus um? He broke the news
in regards to the Patriots interest in Odell Kim Jr.

(10:00):
Last year. Are they still interested and will the Giants
move on from him? We'll discuss that next with Chris
Sims of NBC Sports. But first, in sports, a trade
can make or break your team. A good one can
mean a championship, but a bad one can sense your

going to do the War of the Roses thing. You

(11:53):
guys remember War the Rose And we discussed this a
little bit on this show, Haven't we the War the Roses?
That that's where it was kath Thing Douglas, Kathleen Turner
and Michael Douglas. Danny DeVito was the lawyer and they
were getting a divorce. It turned ugly and they decided,
because neither want to move out of the house, they
would draw a line down the middle of the house.

(12:14):
That's exactly what the Raiders are doing with the city
of Oakland. Instead of moving out, moving their separate way
before the divorce is final, that they're choosing to what's
it called co parent that's they do their co parenting.
Where the Raiders gonna play? Would they play in San Francisco?
What they play in San Francisco that could violate the
territory of the San Francisco forty Niners, even though the

(12:37):
San Francisco forty Niners, uh, this is not breaking news.
They do not actually play in San Francisco. And then
other otherwise you gotta people like, well, why don't you
just move here? And why don't you just move there? Well,
it's a little bit more difficult than that moving people
for just day of the game. And then do you

(12:59):
keep your headquarters is in the bay? Like, how do
you how do you do that? So this is one
of those Look, it's the easiest thing to do. It's
a little bit uncomfortable. We know the divorce is coming,
but during the separation period, we're still both going to
live in the house. Only the Raiders are going to
sleep on the couch and the City of Oakland's gonna

(13:20):
sleep in the master bedroom. You know this, This to me,
This to me is war the Roses. We know they're
getting divorced, but instead of splitting up all the assets
and moving on their separate way, because there is no
viable stadium in Las Vegas, and they only want to

(13:41):
move into Las Vegas when they're absolutely ready to do so,
and that new stadium is absolutely up fire and the
team is good. They're just gonna cohabitate the house, which
is the Oakland Coliseum before it gets pumbled so it
can be replaced by a baseball in the stadium. And
if you watch war the Roses that didn't end up great,

(14:02):
this one probably won't end up grade either. I mean,
that's just the basics to how it usually works. The
longer you stay together when you know you're gonna split up,
the more uncomfortable becomes, and the more you start to realize, man,
we should have just ripped off the band aid, which
is what they should have done. They should have ripped
off the band aid. They should have found a way

(14:24):
to get into another city, or to get into Las
Vegas earlier, you know, to to to use Sandboys Stadium.
But because they did not, this is the best possible
outcome of all the potential outcomes. Just strikes me as
a really really odd thing. Right, really odd thing is

(14:47):
interesting though, how how much heat the Raiders have gotten
for moving and how little heat at least nationally I
can't tell you for locally, at least nationally the Warriors
have gotten for moving out of Oakland. Even though they're
moving across the Bay to San Francisco. That is a
completely different deal. Maybe not to the hedge fund guys

(15:07):
and to the Silicon Valley guys, but to the average
Joe fan. Huge deal, huge deal. All Right. He's the
one who broke the story that the Patriots last offseason
we're interested in Odell Beckham Jr. Are they still interested now?
And is O b J set to be moved? Let's
let's ask him. He's Chris Sims from NBC Sports. He
joins us on the Doug Gottlup Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,

(15:31):
how much of the problems of last offseason were helped?
How much of them still exists between O b J
and the New York Giants. Yeah, that's that's a good question.
And I mean the whole jumping off spot of even
this is something I kind of knew about, you know,
throughout the season, and had other people that I trust
kind of confirmed that as the season went along. And
the jumping off stop was the fact that Jay Glazier

(15:53):
kind of opened up, you know, Pandora's box last week
and predicted that O b J would be traded. I've
predicted the same things I still think you know, there
is issues there. This is nothing I know as of
right now, Doug, of where it all stands. But uh,
for me as a guy as you know, who's pretty
connected to the NFL throughout my whole life and just

(16:15):
reading between the lines and the tea leaves and everything
else that goes along with it, yes, it doesn't seem
like it's exactly Camelot with the New York Giants and
Odell Beckham Jr. Right now. And I just knowing that
the Giants and the Mara family and things like that,
Uh yeah, I have wondered whether they would dangle Odell
Beckham Jr. Out on the trade market once again this year,

(16:36):
and I do think they will. I have heard through
the grapevine that you know that is a possibility, But
you know, as of right now, it's early and I
can't give you anything concrete right now, Doug Galla Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, let's let's get what
do you think happens with Lady on Bell? Right? Yeah,
I mean Levan Bell. I hope he doesn't price himself

(16:58):
out as far as asking for too much money at
the running back position. If you made me guests on
a place he would end up going. I'm going to
say the New York Jets. Adam Gates is pretty good
with running backs catching the ball out of the backfield.
They need to look at something to help out as
Sam Donald. He certainly can take pressure off of Donald
with the running game and his ability to do that

(17:21):
between the tackles. But of course he is a double
you know, a double threat with what he can do
in the past game running routes out of the backfield
or just lining up as a true slot receiver. I think,
of course he won't be on the Steelers. He will
be somewhere else where. That is, I don't know. I
don't think the market is going to be as robust
though as he thinks it will be. And in this

(17:43):
day and age where we see guys like Kareem Hunt
lead the league and rushing as a fourth round pick
and things like that, you know, I would be hesitant
about paying a guy like that sixteen seventeen million dollars
a year. I certainly wouldn't wouldn't do that. You know,
I could justify something around the twelve twelve million dollars
a year range thing for Levy on Bell that makes
more sense. But as you've seen the last few years,

(18:06):
there's a lot of good running backs coming out of
college football on a yearly basis. What about Antonio Brown.
Kevin Colberg just came out and yet he had a
couple of quotes I want to ask you about, but
one was that, hey, we're not giving away Antonio Brown.
We'll trade him, but we'll trade him for appropriate value.
That's kind of a loaded deal, right. We've seen like
Randy Moscow for a fifth, We've seen Amari Cooper go

(18:27):
for a first. I know the contract issues have a
big portion to do with how much they go for.
What is the proper value from from the Steeler's mind, Well,
the Steelers that first of all, I agree with that.
You know a lot of people look at the situation
and think the Steelers have no power in this situation,
and I would argue the exact opposite. The Steelers are
going to get screwed over and this almost no matter what,

(18:49):
So they need to draw draw a line in the sand.
They're gonna lose twenty one million dollars in dead money
because of the way they structured and then restructured Antonio
Brown's deal a few years ago. To whether they cut them,
trade them, it doesn't matter. They are gonna have twenty
one million dollars in debt money, and because of that,
I would not trade him, and I think that's what
Colbert is saying. I'm not going to trade him just

(19:11):
for for nothing at this point because we're taking a
huge hit to our football team. Twenty one million dollars
is is three four really quality starters on your roster. Uh,
that's what that equates to. So they shouldn't give him
away for anything, you know. I do think Antonio Brown.
I think he's starting to hit the slope of the
downhill part of his career. He's still awesome, He's still

(19:33):
one of the best receivers in the game. He comes
with a laundry bag or a laundry list of issues
off the field. I mean, that's where you gotta be
careful with Antonio Brown. We talk about Mike Tomlin all
the time with lack of institutional control. It's really only
because of one guy, and that's Antonio Brown. Whether that's
throwing gatorade jugs on the sidelines, are doing Instagram Live

(19:54):
I'm from the locker room, or quitting on your team
at the end of the year, or going off the radar,
or have bid truly being late for team meetings for
the last five to six years, which I've been told
by coaches, players, front office people. So he comes with
a lot of baggage, and if he's acting for extra
money already before the trade, I just, you know, worry

(20:14):
that he's gonna hurt his standings with other gms and
coaches around the league. But the talent I do think
still justifies a pretty high pick, whether that's a second
round pick, because he's still damn good high high second
round pick, maybe low first round of the situations, right,
But I think he is that kind of talent. Patriots interested,

(20:39):
not that I know of, and I can't imagine, you know,
of course, you know I I talked about the Patriots
being interested in Odell Beckham Jr. You know, it bothers
me that Odell Beckham Jr. Gets lumped in the whole
discussion with Antonio Brown is like the diva receiver. Uh
you know, Odell Beckham Jr. We've never heard a teammate
complain about Odell Beckham Jr. Everything I know of about

(21:00):
him is he's loved throughout the Giants organization. The worst
thing he ever did was on the day off, he
went to Miami in a boat trip, and I understand
that wasn't the best look. And I'm not saying he's
a choir boy, uh, but I think Antonio Brown is
a whole different ball game as far as diva receiver
is concerned. And I don't think you know as much
as going to New England can humble the greatest of

(21:22):
great players, because you walk in that building and you go, Wow,
they don't need me. They can win without me. That's
proven already. Uh. I I do think it would be
a dangerous combination there. And I don't see the Patriots
being an interested in Antonio Brown. Yeah. I mean I
would say this about about Odell Beckham Jr. Curiously absent
at the end of the year. Was that disciplinaria, that
was that injury um and then and remember that was

(21:44):
following the failed on side kick recovery where he seemed
to make a business decision on a on a plane,
which had you recovered the football, it would have been
game over. So I do think I do think there
is some there's something there that tells you he's not
as all in on them as he tried to lead
them to believe last offseason. Yeah, I listen. I I

(22:05):
don't disagree with that statement, Doug. I think that's that's
a real thing. There's no doubt about that. I think
he's you know, we we saw the Josina Anderson interview
with Little Wayne when he couldn't answer if he loved
New York or this is the best place for him,
those little things. Yeah that you know, if you love
New York, he would just come out and say, oh,
I love it here, I want to be here. So
the fact that he didn't say that, that tells you

(22:26):
a little something. He's got to be frustrated with the
quarterback play. I mean, come on, and how how could
you not be. You know, he's he's open a whole lot,
and especially for a guy who's probably other than Tyree Killed,
the most dangerous down the field threat in the game.
He's got a quarterback who can't take advantage of that.
So I think that frustrates him. You know. But to
your what also you're saying is, you know, he was

(22:47):
pretty friendly and what he did with the contract too,
and I think that you have to take that new account.
He did not try to hold them you know, over
the fire for you know, big time let me just
break the internet type of money there. He kind of
settled for Sammy Watkins type of money. Are you kidding me?
Come on, He's not even the same world, you know,
basically Antonio Brown money, which I get that their comparable

(23:11):
talent wise, but his contract came a few years after
you would have thought it would have one up that
you know, a little more than it did. So you know, again,
I'm not saying Odell Beckham Jr. Is a choir boy,
but I do think sometimes he gets an unfair wrap
or gets compared to Antonio Brown, where you know, we
could sit here for another five to ten minutes and
talk about Antonio Brown's issues and we can just go

(23:32):
through them, whether they're on the field, involved with the law,
you know, social media, whatever it may be. I think
that's where I get frustrated. Doug Gotli show here on
Fox Sports Trading. That's the voice of Chris Sims from
NFL quarterback course works for NBC Sports. You see him
on Sunday Night Football. You see him covering Notre Dame games. Um,
how much have you been able to dig in and
watch Kyler Murray on tape. Yeah, not yet. I'm that

(23:54):
it's coming. I'm just I'm kind of this is the
hardest part of my job is gathering all the film
and all of that. So I you know, Doug, you
know me. I'm always as long as you're willing to
have me, I will come on in a few weeks
and give you my deep dive on all these quarterbacks
or whatever position it is. But you know, just my
scouting TV, I from what I've seen for Kyler Murray

(24:14):
certainly a first round pick. You know, he does play
smaller than a Baker Mayfield or Russell Wilson, but at
the same time he's more athletic and explosive than they
are too. As a runner, his arm is a first
round type of arm. Uh So, I don't think there's
any doubt about that. As far as whether he's a
first round talent, I don't think he's a top ten talent.
I don't see that, And again maybe I'll change when

(24:36):
we talk in a few weeks, but I do think
at the very least he's the you know, second half
of the first round type of talent. And you know,
kind of let's see how free agency goes and what
teams need quarterbacks, uh, and what happens with moves like
Ryan Tannehill and things like that. Here as we get
closer to free agency, before you had a rupture, Spleen.
You're the starting quarterback for John Gruden and and part

(25:01):
of it was replacing uh Brad Johnson, and then part
of it was trying to replace you. That sent him
into this tizzy of just collecting quarterbacks and that ultimately,
I mean, really, your injury is one of the things
that led to him losing his job. I mean, I
think I'm sure you feel it, and I'm not saying
that's your fault. It's just a you know, you know
that that's accurate, is it not? It is accurate. Shirtless
certainly didn't help everything that was going on in the

(25:23):
direction we were going with the box. Yes, I mean okay.
So with with that in mind, everyone's trying to figure
out exactly what he wants at quarterback. He has Derek Carr,
he could get out of the Derek Carr deal. He
could hold on to Derek Carr for another year. He's
completely good at the rest of the roster, and now
he's got five first drop picks in two years. You

(25:43):
played for him. You know him better than anybody outside
of maybe his closest confidence. You were his starting quarterback,
what do you think longer than any other quarterback he's
ever been with. So, just to add to your what
you're saying there, So what what? What? What do you
think he wants? He's always looking for competition at the
quarterback position. There's no doubt about that. Um, I don't

(26:07):
envision him doing the quarterback thing in the first round.
I would be shocked. And I certainly you know or
you know again it is John Gruden. And and I
guess I should say I wouldn't be shocked maybe the
end of the first round if he ended up drafting
a quarterback, but I guess I would say I would
be shocked in the matter of uh. I think he
took this Oakland Raider's job because he thought a lot

(26:28):
of Derek Carr. And I'll say this much Doug, even
his offensive coordinator Greg Olsen, who's there. He was in
Oakland originally when they drafted Derek Carr. And I know
right from his mouth that he thinks Derek Carr is
a special player. So I think John Gruten's smart enough
to realize there's a lot of issues with the Oakland Raiders.
We always want to jump on the quarterback in this
day and age of you know, pro football, But there

(26:50):
was offensive line issues, there's a receiver issues. They couldn't
run the ball, their defense wasn't worth the damn. I'm
hoping and I do think that John smart enough to
realize they didn't put exactly the best supporting casts around
Derek Carr, and they have a lot bigger issues on
that roster than Derek Carr. When Joe Flacco has moved
to the Denver Broncos, what was your reaction. I can't
say I was shocked. I guess I was shocked that

(27:12):
had happened that quickly. Um, But Joe Flacco, again, I
think it's a guy that's been, you know, a little
bit misrepresented or underrated through his time in Baltimore. I
know we all want to say, oh, after the Super Bowl,
he hasn't really done anything and it hasn't been anything special.
I get that. I understand that he certainly hasn't maybe
lived up to what he's been paid. But at the

(27:33):
same time, it hasn't exactly been just talentville usc USA
around him at wide receiver and and other positions on
that offense, let alone their offensive coordinator issues as well.
But I think Flacco is a good fit there in Denver.
They need a guy that they can all believe in,
that can take them to the Promised Land. And you
know the things I heard behind closed doors and things
like that, it's just that Denver didn't think Case Keenan

(27:55):
was that guy. The leader had the presence they were
looking for as far as a franchise quarterback in Denver.
Excellent stuff, excellent stuff, Chris. I can't tell you much.

when he got Doug. You mentioned the Raiders stuff a

(28:40):
little bit earlier, just to add on to the report
that they are going to play in Oakland or likely
going to play in Oakland and twenty nineteen, The San
Francisco Chronicle says that there's actually an option as part
of that contract that would allow them to play in
Oakland if the stadium in Las Vegas isn't done. The
Raiders would have to pay seven point five million dollars
in nineteen that could go up to about ten million

(29:02):
if needed, if they needed to exercise that option if
there was a setback at the stadium, and for us
much of a long shot as that may seem to be.

they will keep the disgruntled wide receive receiver. We'll be
back to the Doug Gottlieb Show in ten seconds. But first,
a word from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a

(30:07):
living room to a dog taking a joy ride, we've
covered it. Talked to farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two we are
farmers under written my farmer's truck fire insurance exchanges that
affiliates products unavailable in every state. What's the expression from
the Wire? Have you guys seen the Wire? I didn't

(30:30):
watch the Wire until I'm gonna say three or four
years ago, and I know it's probably been off air
for eight or nine years. Music. Have you ever Binge
watched the Wire? I have not. I have not gotten
around to the wire yet. What about you, um, buyer?
You're a buyer? Is a big on of your big Wire? No?
It was HBO, right, Ramos is the die hard wire guy.

(30:53):
Here Ramos thoughts on the Wire? You know? Uh not
be open three there, Doug. I have not seen the
Wire at all? Really really now, I've never I've seen
one game of Thrones. I like it. I'm sure I'm
gonna try and watch Binge and catch up to the
rest of the world. Um, but I'm generally I'll admit

(31:15):
I'm behind the time because I love sports. I watched
sports first, second, and third on my television that I
have kids as well, and uh so, but I have
Binge watched the entire Wire. The Wire is great. I
enjoyed the Wire more than breaking bad. That was better
than breaking bad. But one of the famous lines from
the wire is you come at the King, best not miss.

(31:39):
And I said this last year with Richard Sherman and
it proved to be accurate, although he also got hurt.
And I said this before about Antonio Brown. Come at
the King, best not miss. And remember, the king of
every football team is the guy who's under center. It's
like twenty of them in the entire world that can

(31:59):
do what they do. And it's really really hard to
find the next guy. The Miami Dolphins have been searching
since Dan Marino retired for the next guy, and they
have yet to find him. The Buffalo Bills have been
searching since Jim Kelly retired. And maybe they had Doug Flutie,
maybe they had Rob Johnson. I don't know. They finally
got to the playoffs last year and jettison their quarterbacks

(32:22):
shortly thereafter. They've been searching forever. It's hard to find
a quarterback. So if you're a wide receiver, if you're
running back, for defensive player like just be, you come
at the King, you best not miss. That's what happened
to Antonio Brown. Kevin Colbert, general manager, of the Pittsburgh Steelers,
and this is from Jeremy Fowler's account. Jeremy Fowler covers

(32:44):
the Pittsburgh Steelers for ESPN dot com. He endorsed Ben
Roethlisberger's leadership, citing an impassion speech at halftime in Jacksonville
as one example. Colbert wouldn't curb Big Ben sharing opinions
on the radio because Ben's the older statesman. If players
were smart, they listen to him. He's been there. Ben

(33:08):
is my quarterback. That's what they've said. Our franchise is
directly tied to Ben Roethlisberger. That's how we got rid
of Todd Haley. That's w what we get rid of
Antonio Brown. He is our quote. We understand it's too
hard to find another guy to break another guy in.
We believe in him. He's played through injury, he's played
through everything. I love it. I love it. Do you

(33:34):
do you have your questions about Ben? I'm sure they do.
I'm sure there's things he does that they don't love.
But look, he's been there through the ups of the downs.
He wants two suples. He put him in position to
win more. That's called going all in and support of
your guy, and you have to establish it doesn't happen organically.

(33:54):
You have to artificially establish a pecking order within the organization.
And that's what the Steelers just did. Tom our coach
bends our quarterback. The rest of you figure it out.
You guys fight to be underneath those two. The white
thoughts are making it all out. Push to get Bryce Harper.

Damn bye, what do you have? Doug? D? Game today?
Is real news? Fake news? Alright? Real news are fake
news that Major League Baseball is so worried about possible

(35:23):
sign stealing that they are implementing rules including forcing all
clubhouse and bullpen TV monitors to have only the game
broadcast on them and have it on an eight second
to lay. Is that real news or fake news? There
we go. I hit the wrong button. Okay, man, that
was crazy. I couldn't hear you, guys. I just professed

(35:44):
the wrong button. All right, Sorry, Dan, what do you got?
Real news are fake news? I'll I'll recap it because
you didn't hear what I said. Real news are fake news.
Major League Baseball is so worried about possible sign stealing
that they are implementing rules including forcing all clubhouse and
bullpen TV monitors to have only the game broadcast on
and have it on an eight second to lay the spectacular. Yes,

(36:09):
Major League Baseball also looking at the different camera angles,
making sure that clubs don't have access to them. But yeah,
try to take sign stealing out of the game. I
don't understand this. I mean, isn't that as much harder
baseball as anything? I think the technology aspect is what
it's all about. Don't you just make your signs better? Yeah,

(36:31):
it's right, I mean right, Like if they're seiling signs,
don't you just make your signs better? And it's still
gonna try and steal signs? I mean, I guess it's
don't have a guy in the outfield, you know, don't
use the monitors, don't use cell phone devices, or you
could just make the signs better, just more ornates, like
figured out figure way to cycle through and change your signs.

(36:53):
How does everybody know what other people's signs are? Isn't
that doesn't that the exact opposite of what they're supposed
to be doing. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe They're just
have too easy indicators. Remember what the indicator was going
to be. The indicator was always the ear lobe indicators,
the earlobe, everything before that and after you know, it
could be different anyway. That's the weirdest. I just it
is a weird thing. Obviously, it's a bigger problem than

(37:16):
people are letting on um because otherwise they wouldn't be
addressing it. But I also think like that's kind of
the fabric of baseball. It's one of those deals. And
this is what the NFL tried to get away from
with with with the spygate, with the Patriots, where people
have been trying to steal signs in the NFL for
years years. Why don't you just do what baseball teams?

(37:39):
What what football teams do right? Where the guy can
have a airpiece in What about that? It could be
an option, right? I mean you, I mean, you're they're
gonna go out there with their air pat pods on. Right,
guys on air pod? Is he talking to me? Or
is he taking a call from his wife? Right now?
Real news are fake news to Chicago White Sex and

(37:59):
now putting on a full court press for free itch
and outfielder Bryce Harper after missing out on Manny Machado.
Did you say pass ball? Pass ball? I'm sorry? Going
after Bryce Harper. Yeah, the White Sox going are putting
the full court press for Bryce Harper now that they've
missed out on Manny. Is that real news? Are fake news?

(38:20):
Sounds yeah? USA Today says the White Sox aren't going
to pursue Harper and still instead will work on smaller
deals with other players. It seems like a Phillies Giants
world for Bryce Harper right now. Well, the Phillies are
the ones that said they wanted to spend stupid money,
and that would be stupid money. Of course, they would
also steal him from the Washington Nationals, who are in

(38:41):
their division. They do have young players and young talent,
but you know, I guess they they're probably soured by
the whole thing. Like, look, we thought that we had
a deal. We thought we offered him a fair amount.
By the way, the Yankees reported they offered what two
million dollars over over I think seven years, so it
was a little bit shorter term deal um. And then

(39:02):
the White Sox deal was it was incentive laden if
he stayed healthy, obviously triggering some health concerns. I just
I think that the Padres got a stinker there. They
got a guy that everybody believes as a dog. On
some level. There's concerns whether he'll play hard and you
stick him in America's find a city with great weather
and maybe not competitive in in the end of seasons,

(39:23):
and how how hard is he gonna play if he
doesn't play hard in the World Series? How hard is
he gonna play when he's been the Padres and they're fighting,
fighting for the last place? Final one, Doug real news
or fake news? Tickets were so tough to get for
tonight's North Carolina duke matchup that even former President Obama
couldn't get a ticket. Is that real news or fake news?
There you go, fake news. It is the President expected

(39:46):
to attend tonight's game at Cameron Indoor Stadium despite those
secondary market ticket prices being in the thousands. This is
game time. On the Dug god Leap Show, that was
almost one of if I ever told you buyer that
I had this reoccurring nightmare back when I was at ESPN,

(40:07):
that I would I went out to take a leak
during a break and I couldn't get back into the
Mike and Mike Studio. I would have this like reoccurring
nightmare because because you know, it's like so early in
the morning, you wake up and you always think like,
I'm one of those wake up several times. I actually
did that this morning. There's four am call time for
First Things First here in New York, and I thought

(40:29):
my phone went off, and I just popped up, threw
on my coat, brushed my teeth, made my way to
the elevator door, and I looked at my I would
looked at my phone and it's at eight am, and
I was like, oh my god, I don't know what
I overreacted to, went back to sleep, and then at
you know, three fifty, jumped up into the exact same
thing all over again. But I had this reoccurring nightmare
and it kind of played out right there where I'm

(40:50):
sitting here in front of my own own board, and
I must have, while while looking at something, pressed a
button and couldn't be heard on air, and it was
really or maybe I could. I don't know that. I
hope the seem was bleaked out. Zion Williamson is a
special player. How valuable is he? I'll explain up coming next.

(41:37):
Dan Buyer, h John Ramos. You guys know what the
season is, right. It's the season where because it's Duke
North Carolina, because there's no NBA, that everyone's gonna watch
college basketball I night and make these grand statements based
upon one game when they haven't watched the rest of
the season, right, right, That's exactly what happens. So that's

(41:58):
that's where we are. The other thing that happens is
there's been reports that some of the tickets are that
of Super Bowl prices, and some of the tickets are
that if you've listened to Dan buyer's reports other people
that some of the reports are of ticket prices. The
first thing is this, in terms of the secondary ticket market,
not anywhere near Super Bowl prices. Right, super Bowl face

(42:20):
value is crazy expensive. But I do understand that like
this could be the most expensive college basketball ticket in years,
and some of it, I have no doubt has to
do with Zion Williamson and the Hailey's comment of you
might not see this ever again doesn't mean that he's
the best player. Like, Look, Kevin Durant was incredible his

(42:44):
freshman season at Texas incredible, But there feels like there'll
be another Kevin Durant ish like Rayon Ingram wasn't quite
Kevin Durant did put up his numbers, but he was
a slightly lesser version who played at Duke and there
was no kind of following his part of that. He
played at a place like Texas that hadn't we hadn't
seen that, and he lit up Kansas and he went

(43:04):
to triple over time at Oaklahoma State. And maybe it's
ESPNS marketing department that has gotten wise over the past
couple of years, linking into guys that they're gonna cover.
Last year Trey Young this year, Zion Williamson. But I
think a lot of it is he's six ft six
two or eighty five pounds. He jumps to the moon,
he plays hard, he plays both ends, and all we

(43:25):
have by the way, he plays for Duke, and Duke's
a team that we the rating. Anytime Duke's on, the
ratings are higher than when they're not when anyone else
is on. There's like five teams in college basketball the
rate they're one of them. Duke rates the most in Kentucky.
But there's there's also Um it's not just how big

(43:46):
he is. It's just not how how tall he is,
oh how high he jumps, or that he plays defense.
There's another element to it. He plays for Duke and
they're playing Carolina and Obama is going to be there.
Now do I think Obama would be there if Zion
was there? Like, I don't know. But if you say

(44:07):
it's solely because of Zion, here's the flaw to that argument.
That only proves that none of the other guys have
any sort of value. That no one before in college
basketball history has any value anywhere close in terms of
name and likeness. You do realize the corner, you're just
paying yourself in if we've never ever ever seen any

(44:29):
sort of happening like this was Zion Williams, Zion Willams,
although we've seen some of it with Jim or for
Debt for a little bit, and there's been a couple
of other guys. So you're either saying that Zion is
so far superior in terms of name recognition, which I
do think there's a portion of it because he was
a YouTube dunking sensation who's proven to be as good

(44:50):
and honestly better than advertised, better than advertised. But here's
the problem even to that, First of all, that we
we we operated this idea. I had this discussion with
like christ Perus a day in terms of baseball, and
they're like, baseball teams need to come off of that money.
Like why in what business? In what business do we

(45:16):
have to spend more money if we get the right product?
Like where where does that actually exist in this world? Like? No,
you you know what you have to do is you
have to spend the right amount of money. I don't
think people understand how the salary cap works. People criticize
football salary cap all the time all the time. Are

(45:37):
you aware that there was a year in which they
had no salary cap, and you would think, if you
listen to pundit's if you listen to players, that would
be a great thing. No salary cap. Everybody gets paid,
you wear. What happened. The team's actually low balled players.

(45:59):
Why because they realize that they don't have to actually
spend that money. That's not what businesses do. They spend
as little as possible to get as much as possible. Which,
by the way, that's what you do when you go shopping,
right We're complete hypocrites, you know. I mean, I'll just

(46:21):
tell you right now. I only why. When I walk
into a store, the first thing I look at is
the sale rack. That's what I do. It's one of
the things I love about living in California is the
second that I travel in the fall, everybody else is
selling their summer gear on sale, whereas like in California,
I mean, with exception, this has been a rare year

(46:43):
when it's been pretty chilly. We've had a lot of rain.
It's chilly this week. But with rare exceptions, like you
can wear shorts eleven and a half months out of
the year, you're never gonna need a parker unless you're
going skiing. You're just not so so. As consumers, for
the most part, we want to get as much as
we can and spend as little as we can. But

(47:03):
when a business tries to do the same thing, somehow
they're bad people. And the only way in which you
get paid more is if you have leverage or you
have a collective Barten agreement. Anyway, let's start with this
first of all, Zion Williamson last year this time was

(47:23):
seen as a little bit heavy um. Some of his
some of his footwork wasn't sharp, he didn't always play hard,
he didn't shoot at the best, and there was one
people wondered how he would translate at the McDonald's All
American camp. He wasn't great. People didn't see it. And
he went and played for coach k who's one of

(47:45):
the all time great coaches, if not the greatest coach
in the history of modern basketball. And guess what he's
learned to play hard, his skill has improved, his body
has improved, and you know what else has improved the
value of his name and lie because attached to duke
like look, you can sit here and tell me that
it's a hot ticket because of Zion Williamson, and I

(48:06):
would partially agree with you. That's a portion of it,
but a bigger portion of it is it's Duke versus
North Carolina. It's Roy Williams versus Mike Sachowski. There's a
litany of talented, talented players that this may be they're
they're only game in Cameron Indoor Stadium as members of

(48:27):
Duke in North Carolina because there's some one and done
guys on both teams. And oh yeah, by the way,
there's a there's supply and demand. There's a great demand
for this game, and there's not usually demand for college
basketball games in a bandbox of an arena. And it
doesn't hurt in terms of the value of the ticket
that the former president of the United States, who's maybe

(48:50):
more popular than any former or current president in the
United States currently living and probably dead, is going to
be in attendance. Like it checks a bunch of different boxes.
And it's Duke North Carolina. And even if you're willing
to say, well, look, Zion is just worth more, there's

(49:13):
these kids that are worth more and they should be
able to get more. If that's your stance, then why
stop at college? Why not go to high school? Zion
Williamson competed against LaMelo Ball in a in a in
a made up game in Las Vegas. This is like
three years ago, two years, two summers ago, and they
had that fire marshals had to close the doors. And

(49:36):
we have closed the door fire marshall games in summer
basketball for years and years and years. I've been a
part of them. I've seen them, I've coached in some
of them. And you know what we don't do. We
don't turn over the money from the organizer to the players.
That ain't how it works, because once they become professionals,
they become professionals. And you can sit here and say

(49:57):
Zion didn't gain anything. Who had can gain anything first?
It's just not true. The entrance to duke is like
you're like member of the skulls. Right. If you don't
think duke has valuable, then why are so many of
these guys after they play a duke so successful in
their television career Because they played a duke. Because they

(50:18):
played a duke and he's a great coach, and it's
a great school, and you're around a bunch of people.
They're gonna run businesses for years to come. And oh yeah,
by the way, it's free. It's seventy dollars, so post tax,
let's post tax seventy dollars. Pretty tax. That's like making
I don't know, D hundred twenty. And even if you

(50:39):
want to tell me, well, you know, his his parents
couldn't have afford that, he would have gotten scholarships if
he's a regular student. That's fair. He wouldn't have gotten
any of his regular student And then you factor in
the the ridiculous amount of free promotion which has only
been and rightfully only been positive, not just from the school,

(51:00):
but from ESPN, from file, from anybody who watches it.
That has a value, that has a value, and he
gets the experience of not just the promotion, but of
playing in this incredible event, incredible environment. If you don't
think it has value, if you don't think it has
any value, then why don't these guys go to the

(51:20):
D League or the G League. Now, if you go
to the G League, you can sign a shoe deal
right away, you can represent whoever you want as a
car company, you can have autograph signings. Sure, you make
less in terms of salary, but if your name and
likeness is really valuable, why don't you go there? Because
there's way more value in playing for Duke or Carolina

(51:42):
or Texas or Kansas or Ohio State or Kentucky then
there is not playing for them. It's the reality of it.
So either way you want to argue it, you're contradicting yourself.
And I will give you that he is a phenomenon,
an absolute phenomen on. But even with that phenomenon, it's

(52:04):
helped out with the fact that he plays a Duke.
And look, if you didn't think that the Carolina rivalry
or that or that President Obama being in attendance had
anything to do with the reported value of this ticket.
They've already played twenty five other games and we haven't
seen any anything like this. Why because TV and radio

(52:24):
and Duke we've built this thing up to be bigger,
and we built this rivalry up to be the best
in sports. Duh, give me your thoughts at Gottlieb Show.
I know everybody's everybody's at once. We we don't like
the man. We don't like companies being paid. We don't
schools make money off of all of their students. They
just happen to make money off of student athletes, and

(52:46):
oh yeah, by the way, give a great portion of
it back to the student athletes getting into a school,
playing for the school, going to the school, supporting the
student I know you have. By the way, whenever you leave,
you can come back and be on full scholarship and
get the degree which pays you back for years to come.
When one trend happens, we usually see the opposite trend

(53:09):
swing back in the other direction. You saw in the NBA,
now you're seeing it in the NFL. I'll explain what
it is next, but first everyone knows untucketed shirts. How.
Untucket replaced the sloppy smock look of an untucked dress
shirt with shurts designed to be worn untucked. A lot
of people think that Untucket shirts fits so well they
must be made for bodies that came out of a magazine. Untrue,
Untucket shurtchs fit perfectly no matter what your body type.

(53:31):
Smaller guys, shorter guy's dinner guys, wider guys, even long
torso guy. The untucketed designers have mastered the proportions that
determine how your shirt falls so for for that just
right length, and neat casual look for all the shapes
and sizes that other brands lead behind. And now Untucked

I'm I'm gonna be off. Ryan Hollins and Dan Buyer
are going to fill in for for me. dB does

(55:00):
a great job. He's got his own show on the weekends.
Of course you see Ryan Hollins. He worked for every
other network and he covers the Clipper games as well,
and there's a ton about the NBA that he played in.
And of course he joins us now on the Dug
Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, tonight we're gonna
see Duke and Carolina. I believe you've seen him both.
R J, Barrett, Zion Williamson. You got the number one pick.

(55:21):
Who have you take in wine? Listen? My heart was
I on, My heart was I on, and I can't
hide that My heart was Dian and my hands was RJ.
In the sense of position with basketball, that's how you
went in the NBA. Now, I know he talented, but

(55:42):
I also look at Zion and I say, there's a
couple of elements that do that. I can't make a
tasteful with Zion Um And what I say is, when
you look at Zion, he's a special type of talent.
He's a special athlete. Now we question how does that
fit into the NBA. Are you gonna be Zach Randolph
or you're gonna be Julius Randol, You're gonna be Blake Griffin.

(56:04):
What essentially are you going to be Zion? There's two
ways that I see Zion being really successful and setting
into today's NBA. Two things he's gonna have to do
either one or the other. If he does Vault's Maga,
no questions there. He's either gonna have to playmate from
the forward spot like Jamond Green, or he's gonna have

(56:24):
to develop a consistent three point shot, two things that
are huge questions right now. Zion has what I call wiggle.
A lot of big men don't have wiggle. They're stiff,
they can't dribble the basketball, they can't There's just a
number of things guys can't do. Jon has wiggle. Okay,
he can move his hips, he can seek his hips

(56:46):
into a crossover. He looks like a big two eighty
pound god out there on the floor. If you can
do that, I think he's number one tick Worthy. We're
r J right now. He's a no brainer. He's a
He's a He's a long, rangy, athletic guy, uh who
can handle the basketball. He can play anywhere from one

(57:08):
Super four and to those NBA. So that's the intrigue
with argue, that's the safer pick. I agree with you.
I think he's Draymond with Blake Griffin's athleticism, a little
bit of Charles Barkley. I think he's a better He
has better natural post moves at this point in his
career than Blake did when he came out, and I
frankly think he's even though his shot needs refinement, he's

(57:28):
a better shooter than Blake. Now, Blake was a dominant
college player and a dominant freak athlete, and he's and
Blake's bigger than he is. But I think there are
things that he does and as you know, the NBA
has evolved since even Blake Griffin came out, right since
you came out, whereas Draymond Green has open doors for people,
and I think that's the position he's he's a power
forward who becomes a small ball center immediately in the NBA,

(57:50):
and if he develops into a three point shooter, and
he's probably still gotta lose twenty pounds or so, I
think he could have a great career in the league. Fair. Yeah,
and Doug, I asked this because I haven't seen it before.
I think some of the guys like a von Ley
either you are a playmaker or you aren't, you know
what I'm saying. And I do have to honestly question,

(58:11):
can this guy learned to be a playmaker like Draymond
was always a great pass or it's just something that
was brought out by Steve Kerr and Mark Jackson. Von
Ley had always been up to push the ball full court,
and since though this year going hey, you know what,
I'm gonna let you push the ball full court. I'm
on some office, so you since you're more comfortable hamling
the basketball, I gotta be sold that design can do that.

(58:35):
And I'm never gonna say that you just can't or
that's something you know we're gonna, you know, kind of
against him, but you know, it's just an interesting dynamic
you gotta look for with Scout again, Doug Gallant show
here on Fox Sports Radio, Ryan Hollans our guests. You
can listen to him along with Dan Buyer. They're gonna
co host the show. Let's start with the Lakers. Um,
I know you come to the Clippers, and I know

(58:55):
there's that that rivalry, but you also live in l
a and you also give national analysis to well, how
fixable is what appears to have been broken before the break?
Let me let me give you one dynamic with the Lakers,
and and and and I don't I really don't want
to hear anymore. There it is here this and and
take it however you want to wag into it. If

(59:17):
Lebron James chooses to make the playoffs, will be at
the playoffs. If Lebron James gets fixed in his mind
the man who's on his team, it could be me,
you all right, and and send me on the squad.
Make the Lakers are making the playoffs. Now the Lakers
don't make the playoffs, it is because Lebron James shold

(59:37):
that to Lebron is a special athlete. See when Kobe
put in his mind that he was gonna wail the
Lakers to the playoffs, he was gonna do everything he could.
He literally his mind in his body or in two
different places to where he runs out of his his achilles.
You know what I'm saying, Like you did so much,
You did so much. Lebron is the guy to sit back.

(59:59):
And this is what a lot of people fall before
Doug and they know they will not give him the
credit of being the greatest basketball player we've ever seen
of all time. And we can talk about that another day.
If le Bron is gonna intelligently calculate his way through
whatever he has to deal with, he's gonna say, well,
if I get in the paint, Cou's is a good thing. Point,

(01:00:19):
I'm gonna bring the best out of him. And you
know what, if JaVale roll for the basket, we can
get a little two man game, and you know what,
in the fourth quarters, I'm gonna have to go take over. Now.
Now i gotta be aggressive. Now, I gotta be selfish,
so to speak. Kobe Bryant would just go gun for it. Michael,
We'll go gun for it. And we can't necessarily talk, Mike.
I want to make this a Michael Jordan's Kobe conversation.

(01:00:41):
But that's why I have a different belief to Lebron
James and the talent that he has moving forward. So
if he doesn't make it, he's cooling that point to
get Luke Walton fired or the Magic Company and saying
we're gonna wait for next year. I definitely agree with
I definitely agree with you the point about if he
if he wants to make it, if he wants to
make it work, as long as his body holds up,

(01:01:03):
he absolutely can. All let's go to the other other coast. Um,
Kyrie was actually playing great basketball personally, and they were
playing better before he got hurt. He gets hurt, They
got a big lead against your Clippers and they couldn't
have looked worse. And then it seemed to snowball and
they seemed to revert to back to the tough times
with the Celtics. How difficult do you think their path

(01:01:25):
is going to be figuring themselves out in the last
part of the season. But I gotta be honest, Bro,
I can't be fake with you about this. They've got
rich people problems. They've got rich people problems, and you
know exactly what I mean by that. There's a number
of teams in the NBA that do not want to
hear the complaints that you don't know how to make

(01:01:46):
Kyrie Irving fit with Jason Tatum. They would die to
have two or three of the players on their roster,
let alone. Gordon, Hey, we're Marcus smart. We can go
down the line. Ultimately, I do pick Boston to come out.
Um is gonna have to have either some ben from
Kyrie to descend them playmates more than score, or those

(01:02:06):
guys are gonna have to step up their level to
get like him. But one thing has to lean one
way or the other too, because love, to be honest,
they both need each other. There is no closer on
that team that you believe in in a game seven
like they saw before in the Eastern Conference Finals. That
leads you to believe that there's anybody else on that

(01:02:26):
team you get the ball to other than Kyrie Irving
and Kyrie Irving right now, he's a liability defensively and
Gordon Hayward together together, I would say all liability. They
don't defend as much, they're not gritty, they don't find
but b they don't work the same duck. You know
what basketball looks like. It ain't the same. We're not

(01:02:47):
going to sugarcoat that. So it's couldn't have to be
a bend from both guys, and it's not. It's not
left up to just oh, you know, Kyrie, you do
this or Jason you do this. They both have to
compete if the order to win. And all that said,
it done. I still favor him. I still favor him.
It's just so, dude, it's so hard not true, aren't

(01:03:09):
not true? Whose drink? Are you more impressed by James
Harden or Russell Westbrook? But man, Russell Westbrook and my
little brother man, I love actually like no other. But
I am so much more improved by James Harden. Why
might I say that? Dude? Do you know for a
jump shooter, the first thing that goes when you're fatigued,

(01:03:31):
did your legs? And it is so hard to make
jump shot at a high level, let alone a contested
jump shot, let alone unassisted jump shots. James Harden has
done all that and then song and I cannot take
away from the leadership and the drive and everything, dude,

(01:03:53):
everything that uh that Russell Westbrook has done. And I
really I hate that he does not the credited and
I don't know what he's ever done to uh Colin Calherd.
But I mean, it's just ugly on that front um.
But ultimately, I'm gonna give the nod to James, and
I don't want to take anything away from what Russ

(01:04:14):
has done, but he's got a better team and I
feel like he's sacrificed his game for the betterment of
those guys over there. I tend to agree with you
talking about the first world problems. That's where the Golden
State Warriors have. Are they better with de Marcus Cousins?
Are they just different with de Marcus Cousins? Intriguing questions

(01:04:36):
Today's in today's NBA says you have to have a
censer and ultimately, if they find a formidable opponent that
can knock them off, they are words. And when I
say worst is that I gotta have. I gotta make

(01:04:56):
sure that body can buy in. And I'm not saying
any Doug that he's gonna have to buy into playing
the develop a gre role, which means it might be
ten to fifteen minutes five minutes a game if you're
playing against Houston and James Harden's pulling you into every
single pick and role, and if if you don't get

(01:05:17):
off the floor. Our team is not gonna win. You
know what I'm saying. Yeah, I'm with you, I'm with
people seem to forget that. Last year. You know, the
plan for the Houston Rockets was whoever replaced Andre Goodala
when Nigodala was hurt, whether it's Quinn Cook or there
was or whether it's Jordan's Bell Like, that's the guy
that they isolated and they went at him. And that's

(01:05:38):
exactly what they would do to DeMarcus Cousins. That's exactly
what they do. You know, you're right and you and
you can ultimately you can see it coming. As much
as we'd like to uh kind of sugarcoat and say, nah,
that's not gonna happen, but it's gonna be fine. It's
fine in the regular season, bro, because we don't read
scouting reports the same way we don't understand. I'll give you,

(01:06:01):
for instance, I'll age myself a little bit, doug Um,
and I'm sure things are done it differently now. They
probably give you a full on iPad. But we would
get a book. We would get a book as thick
as a don text book, and it would have every
team personnel everybody set every stat I mean they had
their birthday where they went to, you know, everything about

(01:06:24):
everybody in the playoffs. And when it gets down to
the needy, gritty, DeMarcus Cousin's offense is going to have
to outweigh his defense. And right now, fresh fresh off
the injury, I agree with you. Done, I don't think
it's there yet. Awesome stuff, can't we hear you hosting?
I'll be listening tomorrow. Um enjoy working Dan Buyer. Whatever

(01:06:46):
you do, make sure you team up about his golf prowace.
I don't know if you know this, but we're actually
champions of the the Farmer's Insurance Pro am. Uh we
we we. We were playing the South Course to which
is the vaunted South Course in at gry Pines. And
Dan's quite good, and he would love to spend at
least two or three segments telling you how good he
actually two or three I'm kidding, of course, not great,

(01:07:13):
not great radio. Hey, thanks so much for joining us.
And by the way, I see here legendary stories of
you out in Bristol playing pick up basketball and the
black Pops talking crazy to people full of court. That
was that was That was ages of go all those
stories are true, but those ages. Thanks thanks so much

(01:07:35):
for joining us, Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sport Traded. Let's
get you over to dan Fire. Did you ever dunk
on Linda Cone? Um? Have you seen that video of
the kid crossing up the grandma and she fell down?
And that was that was actually video of me crossing
up Linda. Alright, good enough, and we want to two

(01:07:56):
or three segments at Gulf tomorrow four or five because
the w G season met Psico. So yeah, so we
got a big tournament to talk about. Lots of NFL
to get to Steelers GM. Keith Colbert confirmed the team
won't use any tags on running back Levian Bell, so
that means Bell is gonna be an unrestricted free agent.
As for Antonio Brown status, the Steelers GM did say
that they will only make a deal if they find

(01:08:17):
good value. Keith Colbert added that Drew Rosenhouse would be
involved he's a B's agent, but that the team would
have the final say on any deals. A unique story
coming out of New York, Doug because maybe it's something
that had appeared to be but is not. A report
from ESPN earlier today said that Giant safety. Landon Collins
reportedly cleaned out his locker and said goodbye to those

(01:08:39):
members of the Giants. Now there's just reports that he
was cleaning out his locker. Maybe a release wasn't imminent,
but will be on Landing Collins watch for the time being.
San Francisco Chronicle reporting the Raiders are close to finalizing
a deal to play the twenty nineteen season at the
Oakland Elameda County Coliseum. The deal could have an option
for in case there's a setback in the New Vegas

(01:08:59):
Stady some NBA notes six or center jewel and Beat's
gonna miss at least a week because of Sortiss as
the left knee. That's according to the Athletic. Quint Capella
back for the Rockets tomorrow night against the Lakers. He
missed them up with a left thumb injury. USA Today
says the White Sox are not going to pursue for
age and I'll feel the Brice Harper despite missing out
on Manny Machado. We'll be back to the Dug Gotlum

guys familiar with the expression the pendulum swings? The pendulum
swings Romo's you're familiar with the pendulum swings? I am, yes.
What's usually referred to that it could go eat away.
The pendulum swings both ways, right, it can go one

(01:10:02):
way or another way right right, The pendulum swings is um. Look,
the pendulum is a back and forth movement. If your
pendulum swings in the clockwise decision, it means yes and
the counter clockwise means no. I've always heard it it
in regards to um. Uh usually the politics and uh

(01:10:29):
what happens is um. For example, you'll have the blue wave, right,
where the Democrats will take over the House, the Senate,
and then sometimes the presidency, and then in the midterms,
all of a sudden the pendulum will swing back and
the Republicans will take back control. We we volley back

(01:10:50):
and forth between wanting to be progressive and liberal and
wanting to go back to our conservative roots. And I
understand that the votes when you get down to it
and concerning how many people are actually in our country,
it's very very close. But the pendulum generally swings in
our country. Go back and look in terms of House
and Senate and even the presidency. Hard to beat an

(01:11:11):
incommitt in the presidency, but House and Senate, the pendulum
usually swings. The same is true in business, the same
is true in sports. I'll give you example. We've gone
through a a a time in which the pendulum has
swung in the media um and I think in reality

(01:11:32):
in sports where the players became more empowered. Lebron James
taking control of where he wanted to play, first Miami,
then back in Cleveland, now with the Lakers. Kevin Durant
took control of his career, went to the Warriors. Paul
George forced his way out of Indiana. Jimmy Butler forced
the way first out of Chicago and then ultimately out
of Minnesota. There's pendulum's pendulum swings, players empowering themselves, players

(01:11:56):
fighting for greater contracts. I mean, look, we were still
in that kind of I guess that the word is
liberal space in terms of the empowerment of the student athletes.
Guys now transfer, it's much easier to transfer, and many
players are being able to transfer right away, and eventually
we're gonna swing back in the other direction where it's
gonna be more punitive when guys transfer. It's gonna be

(01:12:18):
harder for guys to switch teams. It's gonna be way,
it's gonna be way harder. You know, that's just the
way it works. Think about this in regards to football.
The Steelers wouldn't give Levian Bell into his contract demands.
They played a game with chicken. And as much as

(01:12:39):
the Steelers didn't make the playoffs, and you could say
they lost the battle, they won the war because they
didn't give in. They didn't pay Levian Bell and he
didn't make fourteen half million dollars last year. The Pelicans
to this point, it refused to give away Anthony Davis
at this point in time, and now the Steelers won't
trade Antonio Brown. It feels like we were in this
position where the pendulum wong and players had power. Players

(01:13:04):
had power, what didn't didn't. Earl Thomas missed a couple
of games a couple of years ago. I remember that
where players would hold out and owners would give into
their whims. And now you look at the Patriots win
the Super Bowl and you're like, well, they don't give in.
You look at the Steelers, one of the great historic franchise,
and there they don't seem to be giving in, and

(01:13:26):
you start to think to yourself, wait a second, maybe
maybe this is the way. Maybe the pendulum has swung back.
The same thing will happen in college sports. All this
free movement. It's it kills the ability to You're gonna
watch an n c A tournament and you're gonna have
to get reacquainted with just about every team. Any wait,
that guy played at two other schools. That doesn't make sense.

(01:13:48):
That's not good for the sport. They're gotta run around
with name tags on full time, and even then you
still don't know who they are, so you cheer for Jerseys.
It makes it a more watchable sport. The same thing
will happen in football. Well, now we got the transfer
portal and guys are transferred more regularly. That will happen
for for a bit of time. But I do think
at some point in time people go like, hey, that's enough.

(01:14:09):
This is not good for the sport. All this like
the idea of free agency in college sports and not
a good thing because we need to be familiar with
what we're watching. So I think the pendulum will swing back.
I think it's already swinging back in professional sports, where
the idea of players controlling where they want to go,
because even the players who think they know where they

(01:14:31):
want to go don't ultimately end up happy. Right like
Kevin Durant held the league hostage, went to the Warriors,
won two championships, not happy. Paul George thought he wanted
to go to l A, went to Oklahoma City, ends
up being happy in a place he didn't want to go.
We'll see what happens with Kyrie Irving. So the idea
of giving into a player because he thinks he knows

(01:14:51):
where he doesn't want to go, he thinks he doesn't
actually know pendulum swings. Colin Coward thinks Russell Wilson could
be a New York giant. Give you my thoughts. Be

(01:16:00):
hearing where he thinks Russell Wilson ends up the rumor.
I'm gonna tell you about it. I was told this yesterday.
This is happening in the entertainment agent world. Everybody will
deny it. It's not good to be out now. But
Russell Wilson's wife is Sierra. She is a singer and
an entertainer. She would prefer to live in New York.

(01:16:21):
And the Giants need a quarterback, and there's nobody in
the draft they love. So just remember this. A lot
of things add up last year of Russell's contract. His
wife would prefer New York. Seattle is not an entertainment mecca. Okay,
New York needs The Giants need a star quarterback to

(01:16:42):
replace Eli. You can get a lot of pushback on Eli.
Remember when Tebow was in Denver? Who did who did
Elway get Peyton Manning? Nobody complained about Peyton replacing Tebow.
Tebow disappeared into the ether. Also, Russell Wilson good looking guy,
classy guy, incredibly mark of a bowl and kind of
buried in the Pacific Northwest. And the Giants also have

(01:17:04):
an offensive head coach, not a sixty six year old
defensive head coach. I'll take that bet. You know why,
because of how NFL contracts are structured. You know, like
you really think Seattle is gonna just let him go,
but we built the whole thing around him, and we're
just gonna let him go. And you can say, well,

(01:17:27):
he'll just leave as a free agent, like, yeah, that's
not actually the way it works in the NFL. The
NFL has structured a system where you can hold on
to a guy for almost as long as you want.
All you have to do is franchise tag in one year,
franchise taging a second year, and if you want, you
can franchise tag him a third year or transition tag him.

(01:17:47):
That makes him so that he's not really a free
agent for two additional seasons, at which time the Giants
will already have their quarterback. The only reason that the
Washington Redskins moved on from Alex Smith was they had
replaced him with Pat Mahomes, who backed him up for
a year. So unless the Seahawks can find an air
apparent that's as good or better than Russell Wilson, they

(01:18:09):
ain't doing. That doesn't mean that Russell Wilson and his
wife's CRRA doesn't doesn't want to be in New York.
They can't want to be in New York all you want,
but that ain't the way the NFL works. One of
the reasons the NFL is so healthy is because they
don't have this nonsense they have in the NBA, where
it's like a U basketball you can switch anytime you
want to switch. I'm bringing Dan Buyer. Dan, you're a

(01:18:34):
Seattle Seahawk fan. Yeah, your your reaction to Cowherd statement.
I find it interesting because I look at Russell Wilson
and I think, I don't know, maybe this is maybe
this is a wrong guest, Doug, but I think that
if Seattle had the right opportunity and then the right situation,
that they would consider moving him. They've never shied away

(01:18:54):
from pulling big deals. Usually it's acquiring the big players
like you know, Jimmy Graham m or Percy Harvin. So
maybe something like that would be up you know, John
Schneider's alley. But the other point that I think it.
I was telling the guys this earlier. I don't think
I'm as high on Russell Wilson as maybe other people
are as a as a quarterback where I think he's

(01:19:16):
I think he's good. I just don't think that he's
Aaron Rodgers level. And Russell Wilson is already thirty years old.
And the point being is if Russell Wilson doesn't have
his legs to move and be that factor, how great
can he actually become? So to Collins point of, if
the Giants wanted to, you know, give him, you know,

(01:19:36):
give him the you know, the the boatload of picks
or whatever, then that that could be something. But yeah,
for for for what you're saying, it doesn't make sense
for Seattle when you have the control. But if they
were to give you three first round picks, I I
think that it could be something they would listen to.
Uh yeah, I just I don't see them. I don't

(01:19:56):
see them doing it. I could be wrong. I don't
se him doing it. He's coming off a year where
with a reworked offensive line, they were ten and six,
and you can sit here and tell me he's thirty
years old. But remember the lifespan for an NFL quarterback
now extends to win your forty It really does you
know what you're saying. You're saying it's different because because

(01:20:17):
he's uh, because he's so mobile, he's never missed a
start like like he's he's never missed a start. He's
not a run as you as you know, he's not
a running quarterback. I agree with you. I don't think
he's anywhere near anywhere near the stratosphere of an Aaron Rodgers.
He's not um. But part of the beauty to him

(01:20:39):
playing in Seattle is we don't watch every down, we
don't watch every play, we don't micro we don't micro
analyze every pass he makes. But I just don't see
Seattle unless there's an air apparents sitting there. I don't
see him given up on on them and and hitting
hit and reset. They have chosen not to hit reset,
and they've they've only won single digits one time, and

(01:21:00):
that was last year, which was seen as a disaster.
They clean house and now they're ten six in one
and they're right back in the hunt with a young
team in a young defense. Count me put me down,
as I don't see it. If if a certain deal
came along, I think that they wouldn't be afraid to.
But as you as we know, in the NFL, the

(01:21:20):
only position that shouldn't have competition as quarterback. And if
the Seahawks draft a guy that maybe could replace him,
then that could tell us something about Russell Wilson's future.
And that's what the Fox said. Uh this from Pedro Mora.
The Dodgers will no longer serve plastic straws. You'll be
able to get a paper straw if you want one.

(01:21:42):
There is no worse invention in the history of the
of people trying to have renewable resources then a paper straw.
I'd much rather sip it out of the cup or
sip it out of my hand, just put in my hand.
But but a paper straw is all play you use
you in these pig use these paper straws. They're the worst,

(01:22:04):
the worst. Will Levian Bell be the next Manny Machado?
I'll tell you up coming next to the Doug Gotlip Show.

you stay ahead of the game. Put their experience in
a play at Farmers dot com are Farmers. I think
there's some correlations in sports here. I know Manny Machado
was a free agent and he didn't sit um at all.

(01:22:47):
He was actually rewarded with a bigger contract that than
I frankly thought he could. He would get three million
over ten years, all guaranteed UM. But weren't this weird
time where where where people have always argued that football
players should get more money guaranteed. And I would argue

(01:23:09):
that football players contracts make the most sense, that baseball
players contracts make zero sense. And I just I don't
love the idea of copying um, copying poor business models.
I just I don't love it. I don't. I mean,

(01:23:33):
if anything, the one the one sport where the personalities
and the individual players themselves sell the most tickets, it
would be basketball. You can see him, get close enough,
you feel like you can touch him. It's a star
driven sport. But even in basketball, that has its limits,
because if your star player can't win Cason point Anthony Davis,

(01:23:56):
what really is your value? You still you're not gonna
philip An arena. Losing teams don't lap arenas. Just not
the way it works. It's not the way it works.
The more you win, the more people want to be
a part of it, and when you have good players
generally that that helps you. But I love this whole,
you know post Manny Machado, Hi that say, I love this.

(01:24:17):
I love San Diego fans. We're on in San Diego. Um,
it's it. We're also we're on the home of the Padres.
And I get that you're bitter because Dean Spanos took
his team up to five and to the four oh
five and got off in Carson and put him in
a soccer stadium and they're gonna be the second tenant

(01:24:38):
in Los Angeles and they're struggling to draw. I I
get that you're but I don't really know what you're
mad at. You're so joyous over the Padres spending somebody
else's money on Manny Machado, when you could have spent
some all these other people's money and got a stadium
and had everything like it just it's it's not logic

(01:24:59):
that makes any sense to anyone outside, Like, well, you know,
we're a one horse town now and we really needed
something to rally around. And yeah, we probably overspend and
it's probably a guy who's not gonna play hard and
it'll be productive, but it's a it's a picture's park
and we need more pitching. But damn it, you know
this is a reinvestment in San Diego and we got
Mannie Machado. It is like, okay, congratulations, are you that

(01:25:24):
much better today than you were yesterday? Not really? Not really? Um.
When the Yankees, who have endless supplies of money, the
highest they'll go is to forty. When the Dodgers, who
just had him needed a shortstop and they have endless

(01:25:45):
supplies of money, they're not even in the bidding war.
That that should tell you all you need to know.
But in baseball there's an expression, and it holds true
with Manny Machado. It only takes one right. You get
down to a too. You feel like he can't get
a hit off this picture. The things coming in and
it just looks like a blur and your your your

(01:26:07):
coach says, hey, step out for a second. Alright, baby, alright, baby,
Hey only takes one. And he's right, it only takes one.
That's the thing in sports. It only takes one team
to overbid on somebody, and now you have a landmark deal.
So I look at that, I look at Levian Bell,
and I think to myself, all right, the trends are
pretty obvious. The Steelers and look at the Steelers would

(01:26:29):
have been better if they had Levian Bell. I'm not
gonna argue anybody who argues otherwise and says, wow, like, look,
they were just as good, if not better, They would
have been better with Levian Bell. Why. He's a great player.
He can run it, he can catch out of the backfield,
and he's not terrible in past protection. Do I think
he overvalues himself. Sure, but you have so many people
predicting you're not gonna get seventeen not gonna get eighteen

(01:26:51):
million dollars, Like okay, I tend to believe that's true.
But just like in baseball, just like it made him
in shadow, it only takes one, and all it takes
is a team that's a little bit better, that's got
a little bit extra money that can make excuses to
themselves like, well, you know, we know it won't probably
work at the end of the deal, but at the
start of the deal, it gives us some credibility with

(01:27:13):
the fans, and it will put more people in the seats.
It's not it's not what puts more people with the seats. Initially,
it gets you more excited. Maybe it sells a couple
of extra tickets, as a couple extra sponsorships, and maybe
for the first year pays for itself. But what really
gets people come into the stadium is when you win
damn football games. And you win when you have the

(01:27:34):
best overall team, the best forty six or fifty three
on the day of the game, and you've got a
much better chance of getting that if you spread the
money around than if you lock it into one position
of a guy who's getting into his late twenties. Other
teams have shown that you can win with lesser paid backs,
with multiple backs and oh yeah, by the way, what

(01:27:56):
happens if he gets hurt. I'm not gonna like a
huge deal about the people say drugs and it was weed.
It was on the way to the team plane. That
that that's more just being dumb and arrogant than anything else.
More than being he's not like a drug act. So
he's taking oxy on the way to the airport, it's
not like he's he's starting coke, like he was smoking

(01:28:17):
a j with another guy and his team on the
way to the airport, like it was. It was it dumb, yes,
but that doesn't make you some sort of crack feend
sitting on the sitting on the corner, begging for your
next hit. But I'd love to tell you that that
Levian Bell is not getting paid, that that Chris Ballard
of the Indianapolis Cold Snows. I got a young back

(01:28:39):
that's been in the second year that doesn't cost me
much money. That the New York Jets realized we need
an offensive line, we need wide receivers. We can use
second third day draft picks to get running backs. Get
a guy off the street. Look at c. J. Anderson.
He was on the street and looking out productive he
was in the playoffs. We can get a couple of c. J.
Anderson's and still not come anywhere near what we would
pay for Levian Bell. But it only takes one and

(01:29:05):
some of the most bizarre logic can draw some of
these guys to getting a deal done. Don't believe me.
I give you Manny Machado, who I mean, he couldn't
have butchered the whole postseason thing any worse. He didn't
hit well, he didn't run, he didn't run hard. You know,
he stepped on the first baseman's heel twice. He had

(01:29:28):
terrible interviews and poor interactions with teammates, front office staff,
and coaches in l A, in l A. Outside of that,
Mrs Lincoln, how is the show? And yet, and yet,
even though the Yankees weren't willing to go over two million,
even though the Dodgers weren't even really interested, the Padres

(01:29:48):
used a logic of, well, you know, the Chargers left,
and so we need something to rally around. Let's massively overpay,
even though we're a year away from maybe being a
year away. Let's bring in a guy who doesn't have
a great reputation as a hard worker into the most chill,

(01:30:09):
laid back area in Major League Baseball when we're gonna
be out of the playoff hunt by some time in
early August, and we're gonna expect him with nine years
remaining on his contract or eight years remaining on his
contract to come in and keep playing hard. Good luck
with that. But in baseball they say it only takes
one and that's the truth. In contracts, it only takes one.

(01:30:32):
Um Our next guest is has a really really interesting story.
He had kind of a tumultuous run at quarterback in college,
bounced around in the NFL, and is now starting quarterback
for the Alliance of American Football. He plays for the
Orlando Apollos. Has he gotten paid yet? What is this

Doug Gotlap Show, Fox Sports Radio. M Um, interesting day

(01:32:00):
the world sports right, only a day away? Um, only
a day away from the NBA? Is that we are
where day away from from NBA games restarting? Yeah? Yeah,
so I'm this is this is a great and should
be a great night for college basketball, an absolute great
night for college basketball. You got Duke taken on North

(01:32:21):
Carolina at Cameron Door Stadium and they and this is
how what it's supposed to be about. I'm trying to
figure out how to express this. Ryan Maybe or Buyer,
you could help me, Like, I'm not gonna sit here
and tell you college basketball is nearly what it used
to be, nearly what it used to be. But at

(01:32:45):
its best, regular season college basketball is way better one
than perception and two honestly better than regular season NBA
or NFL. College football may maybe the maybe the only
thing that that's comparable. But college basketball is so different

(01:33:08):
because and especially to place like Duke, where the crowd
is very much a part of the game. It feels
like that kind of over that big high school gym,
standing room only hot you know, whether it's Vitaal or Billis,
they're up kind of in the They're up in the
catbird seat, not even courtside, cause there's nowhere to sit there. Like,
college basketball at its best is still amazing, and tonight

(01:33:31):
should be amazing. It'll be great. It'll be great to
see exactly what what Zion Williamson does mean. Like, look
the the juxtaposition of Zion Williamson and Luke May. Like,
Zion Williamson is going to be the number one overall
pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Everybody wanted him, everybody

(01:33:53):
fought over him. He's six ft six, six ft five
and a half two pounds, going to get Luke May,
who like, look, that guy looks like he's a walk
on basically in comparison, but in a college basketball game
because he can shoot, because he's strong because of how
the court is shrunk, and Duke struggles to shoot the
basketball at times. College basketball Luke May has almost as much,

(01:34:20):
if not more value at times then Zion Williamson. Because
this is the pinnacle of his athletic life. For this
or playing in the Final four, competing for Nash Jams,
this is the pinnacle of his athletic life. He doesn't
have other things to have to have to worry about.
So I think it's gonna be fascinating, fascinating to watch.

(01:34:44):
Do you think it's more of a close game that's
back and forth, or do you think eventually one team
pulls ahead convincingly. I think this can be a very
close game. I do, um, I just do. I mean,
I don't think. I don't think Carolina gets their doors
blown off at all. They got some one of the
things that's that's missing in the kind of conversation about

(01:35:05):
Duke and Carolina as because of because of Luke May.
And they have a transfer from Pittsburgh named Cam Johnson.
They have their own one and done in Nasir Little
and how how Naser Little plays tonight. Nsire Little athletically
incredibly gifted. He too is a hybrid player who has

(01:35:26):
to shoot the basketball better six six to twenty. You know,
body is much more of a grown man than than
what you think of for most freshmen. But you know,
Nazeer little is kind of buried behind Luke Band Cameron Johnson,
and they have a freshman point guard battle freshman point guards.
There's names Kobe White. Kobe White has his huge head
of hair and he can be a scoring machine. I
think he's the all time leading scorer in the state

(01:35:47):
of North Carolina, hold me to that. And then they
have aged experience with Cam Johnson and and Luke May
they have better depth then Douke has. And this seems
to be a game where depth is going to be
a big factory because it's gonna be so hot, and
Duke really has three three and a half player second score. Now,
those three guys can absolutely get it done against anybody

(01:36:07):
in America, and they'll be challenged tonight. I think Tights
can be a great game. And this is to me,
this is the to every college basketball program in the country.
You're not gonna be Duke in terms of your personnel,
but don't ever expand. Don't expand your arena. You can
fix your arena. You can find new avenues for revenue,

(01:36:28):
but the cost and the debt service you're gonna pay
to expand an arena that oftentimes becomes too big to fill.
This is what happened to my alma mater, this idea
that we used to be in this more is more,
and now most of these arenas sit half full when
you're having a mediocre or worse season. But this should
be a ton of fun. And I've said, and you

(01:36:50):
can listen to my my podcast, but you gotta remember
about Zion Williamson the podcast it's called All Ball. But
you gotta remember about Zion Williamson is that he's not
if you haven't seen him play, he's not Lebron as
a ball handler. He's not. He's he's more. Draymond Greene

(01:37:11):
meets uh meets Blake Griffin meets Charles Barkley. That's a lot. Well,
let's let's welcome in Garrett Gilbert. Of course, uh, many
of us remember when he was Mr Texas and foot
high school football. He went to ut and of course
this has kind of been a mercurial journey that's led
him to the American This is gonna be the Alliance

(01:37:31):
of American football. He's got six twenty passing yards, four
touchdowns on the season, and by the way, Garrett won
the Alliance Offensive Player of the Week honors for a
week to completing nineteen of twenty eight passes for three
three yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, leaving the Apollos from
Orlando to a thirty seven twenty nine come from behind
victory over the Commanders at the Alamo Dome. And he

(01:37:53):
plays for the headball coach. He's Garrett Gilbert fallm on
Twitter at Garrett Gilbert seven. Joins us on the Doug
Gotlip Show. Oh, let's me on Instagram at Garrett's Garrett
Gilbert seven. Garrett, how are you. I'm doing well. Thank
you very much, appreciate Jamy. What's this? What's this been
like for you? I Mean, like, look, dude, you when
you grow up in the state of Texas and you
start at quarterback at the University of Texas and obviously

(01:38:16):
then later at s m U, I'm sure you had
visions of, Hey, I want to be a starting quarterback
in the National Football League. Um, when did the opportunity
first present itself to join the Alliance? Yeah, I mean
you're slowly right, you know, that's kind of always been
the dream and always been my goal. Um, but this, uh,
you know, I was released after training camp from I

(01:38:38):
was third and got released, and um, you know, waiting
waiting around, you know, trying to stay in shape, and
um this uh, this league started to uh you know,
pop up, and some people started calling me and more.
I thought about it just looking at some of the
coaches that they were able to bring in, some of them,

(01:38:59):
some of the guy is on the rosters that I
was looking through them and it, you know, it looked
like Grill football and me and so that was kind
of initially drew me to it. And um, it's been
a great experience so far. Okay, you the first time
you met Steve Spurrier was when I met him. Uh
we right after the draft. We I was, I was
not able to go there at a quarterback combine. I

(01:39:19):
was not able to go to and just meet him there.
Right after they drafted me, flew down for for a
mini camp and uh and and met him at MISSI camp. Okay,
so they drafted you side unseen Yeah essentially, yes, Um
a little bit. You know, I spoke with Tim Rusk
blar GM and David Reeves who's who's coaching our running
backs before the draft. But um, like I said, it

(01:39:41):
was not able to go to the combine, so it
was kind of just, uh yeah, a little bit on
a whim. So what do you say first time you
saw him? What do you say? He uh, well, his
first comment after draft was that he thought it was
one of the tallest quarterbacks you'd ever coached, which you know, uh,
you'd have to do your research on that too to confirm.
But you know, he's been he's been awesome. You know,

(01:40:03):
he's he's he's got instant credibility. Like I said that
that the coaches around this league or what drew me
to this deal, and um, you know, have getting to
play for him with with you know, all the great
quarterbacks he's coach and all the great offenses he's coach
has been a lot of fun. You know, Um, I
think the first thing that comes to mind, and we've
seen some of the hits, the first thing that comes
to your mind with with quarterbacks and whether or not

(01:40:24):
you you play in a minor league and try and
get back into the NFL and show yourself, is am
I going to be protected? How much of a fear
is that for for guys and whether or not they
sign up to play in this League's like, Hey, I'd
love to play, I want to spin it, but dude,
you gotta protect me first and foremost because all these
other guys are trying to get a job and they
know one great way to get a job is to

(01:40:45):
lay me out. Well yeah, he's absolutely right. Um that uh,
that kind of um, you do have to be careful
about that. But you know, that's never really crossed my mind.
This opportunity to play football again, and I mean full environment,
get the chance to take meaningful snaps and lead a
team was was really what? What what drew me to this?

(01:41:07):
And you know, yeah, I'm looking forward to, you know,
hopefully having another opportunity going forward, But right now I'm
just focused on enjoying this and getting the playball again. Um,
you know. And and and as for you know, Bill
Polliam's done a great job setting this deal up. They've
they've tried to make a quarterback sly you can only
rush five guys. There's some kind of little quirks in
the rules that that you know, on paper will help

(01:41:31):
us out to avoid getting taking some hits. Um, how
how similar is the level of competition to you know,
mostly been preseason too? Is it preseason football? Is it
Is it back up caliber football with the with the NFL.
Like how in terms of speed of the game, the
skill of the athletes, what's it compare most too in
professional football? Well, I mean, you know, obviously there's nothing

(01:41:54):
like Sunday's um in the NFL. But you know a
lot of guys in this league are our guys that
over the past two or three years have been on
NFL rosters, you know, playing a lot of a lot
of guys contributing on special teams and that sort of
thing or one snap away. So I mean it is
you know, it feels like professional football to me. Um,

(01:42:14):
and you know that, uh, and I think that's been
really good. Um. The level of play has uh, you know,
from training camp, our joint practiced, into our preseason and
now into our first two games, it feels like pro
football to me. Greed Gilbert joining us in the Doug
out Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio, how would you
characterize your journey? And for people don't know, you were
the number one prospect in the country, right and Um,

(01:42:38):
I think you're the one you got thrown into the
game when when Colt got hurt in the National Championship Game,
Right that is true. Yeah, Okay, from from that moment
to starting quarterback at Texas transferring out SMU, you put
up big numbers at s MU, bounced around the end
of like what what how? What's this journey really like
for you to go through? Well, it's certainly been a

(01:43:01):
long one. I mean, you know, we could sit on
here for a while and talk about uh, um, you
know all the places I've been, and that's the thing.
But I've been very you know to meet and you know, yeah,
you'd like to be in one place and you'd like
to have you know, some stabone and and be fantastic
from a wife and I but I feel very fortunate
that each place I've gone to him being able to
learn from Um, learned from a lot of really great quarterbacks,

(01:43:24):
and I starting off in St in St. Louis learning
from Sam Bradford and and Sean Hill guy who played
for thirteen fourteen years, and then um going to New
England and kind of you know, learn from one of
us not the best of all time, and Tom Brady
um was you know, was a great experience, and Detroit
Danver lost Matt Stafford and I could go on and

(01:43:45):
on and then finally ended up in Carolina where I
got to learn from Derek Anderson, who another guy who
you know has lasted for a really long time. And
those guys, you know, have taught me a lot. And
you know, obviously Cam and I are not exactly similar
as far as our skill set, but you know, you
still learn from guys like at So I've been. I've been,
you know, really again, you know it to have a
little stability, but you know, you look at it, and

(01:44:07):
how much I've gotten to learn over the past few
years has been fantastic question. I've always wondered you in
the practice squad when the Patriots beat the Seahawks to
win the Super Bowl. Practice squad guys go to the game.
We at home for the game, when the sideline for
the game, where were you during that game? I was right,
I was right there on the sideline. Um, I uh,
kind of a small locker room, so I stayed out

(01:44:27):
during halftime watch Katie Perry perform, and then um so
you know, not not not in the locker room at halftime,
but I was right there on the sideline for for
the lot deal. I was unbelievable. Okay, so there's some
questions I want to ask if you would indulge me
Garret Gilbert joining us from the Orlando Apollos of the
a F. He's been lightening the world on fire as
the offensive player of the week and there too and
oh they just came from behind and and one in

(01:44:49):
San Antonio this past weekend. Uh, he played for the
headball coach. But I want to ask you about that
Super Bowl. There's a lot of things that are lost
in that game because Malcolm Butler made the interception. For example,
Tom Brady's drive before that, What do you remember as
a guy who knew the offensive game plan, knows the
system knows Tom Brady, what do you remember about that

(01:45:11):
last drive that gave the Patriots lead that Russell Wilson
had to come back from. Well, I'll be honestly, I
did not have a headset, so I couldn't hear the
play calls, but just being there to watch him, and
I mean, what really sticks out to me not even that,
not even just that last drive, but that entire fourth quarter.
It was like he couldn't miss um. I mean when
he came from the game from behind in that game

(01:45:31):
as well, and it seems like you know, it seems
and Obviously this goes without saying. It's kind of automatic
by now that uh, you know that that once once
things get into the fourth quarter, that that Tom is
going to make a play. And so just that whole
entire fourth quarter it seemed like you couldn't miss. And
then uh, Curse makes that catch off his cleet, and

(01:45:51):
it was like kind of all the year comes out.
And then obviously you know, everyone knows what happened next. Okay,
but wait, but but but if you remember, and I
remember watching again, Curse made the catch with people forget
like how miraculous. It felt like the David Tyree catch
all over again. Right, You're on the sideline there, and
I was thinking, well, you gotta either let him score
or call a time out. They did neither. I want,

(01:46:14):
I want the true answer. Now, did you think that
Belichick should have called the time out or shouldn't let
them score? I'm not going to second guess anyone. I
I'm not I'm not gonna watch you. I was kind
of lost in the moment that time, so that thought
didn't cross my mind. All I was thinking was, to
be honest with you, All I was thinking was how
how were we You know, can we go down and

(01:46:36):
score in thirty seconds or whatever it was. And in
the specifics right now, I can't I can't quite remember,
but that's all that. That's all my thought was. I mean,
are we are we going to be able to go
down and get another one? You've been a part of
a lot of things in your life. What's it like
when Malcolm Butler picked off that football? It was I mean, pure, pure,

(01:46:57):
pure excitement, pure joy and obviously is shocked. I mean,
you know, I think obviously, Um, you know that that
that play has been been talked about and talked about
for forever about Um, you know whether or not they
they made the right call, but I mean, gosh, it
was an unbelievable play by Malcolm to step in front
of it, and um, I mean just absolute shocked, enjoy.

(01:47:19):
To be honest with you. The last thing about the Alliance.
You started to play well, and I'm sure it's great
to be in live football games again. You kind of
start to feel in your rhythm. Um, what's what's the
what's the plan in terms of there's gonna be a
time which if you have a good game, there's gonna
be an NFL team that reaches out to you, and
you gotta just like, are you gonna keep putting yourself
out there even though maybe you've proved your point and

(01:47:41):
you're gonna get that shot back in the league. Well,
to be honest, you know, that's I'm not focused on
that right now at all. My Uh. Again, like you said,
I'm enjoying getting to play this game again. It's been
you know, other than a little bit of preseason action
here and there, it's been five six years since I've
actually played an extended action. So this has been a

(01:48:02):
ton of fun for me to get to play again.
And my goal is to be the best quarterback I
can be for this team. What whatever happens after that,
I think, you know, if I if I'm worrying about
that sort of thing, if I'm concerning myself with, uh,
how do I get this next opportunity in the NFL,
I think I'd be getting in the way of myself
as a player, getting in the way of myself as

(01:48:23):
as as a quarterback of this team. So I'm I'm
really trying to focus on the day to day operation
of this and proven and then come the end of April,
whatever happens. Uh, If if that turns into another opportunity,
then fantastic. Have you getting paid? We have gotten paid, absolutely, yes, yea.
I just like, look, I played minor league sports before

(01:48:44):
where they come in they're like, listen, guys, don't worry,
don't worry. And if second they say don't worry, everybody's like,
what do you mean don't worry? What do we got
do not worry about? Like the money is coming, but
that's when there's something to worry about. Huh yeah, yeah.
Did you get to don't worry talk earlier this week?
We did well, we gotta don't worry talk. But you
know it's um, obviously yesterday everyone saw the Tom Dundon

(01:49:07):
made it. That's been fantastic to see a guy like
that investments league and someone who's been so successful, Uh,
you know, validate what we've been doing in obviously a
very short time and um, you know it just kind
of it just shows that you know, this, this this
alliance is you know, headed in the right direction. Well, listen,

(01:49:29):
congratulations on the success thus far, continued quality play and
health to you. Make sure you tell the headball coach hey,
we said hi, all right, hell here we're going now.
Thanks so much for doing us. I sure appreciate and
I will do that. Thank you guys for having me
on It's Garrett Gilbert to fall on Instagram at Garrett
Gilbert seven. You might not be able to get a
new car with your tax refund, but you can make

(01:49:50):
your car feel like it's brand new. All it needs
is a great paint job. Come in to Mako today
and get your dream paint job during their text season
sales event to get you to Dan Buyer. He's got
a dream paying job in his car. Pretty awesome, ire adescent.
I thought the ardescent color was really cool. Good idea. Yes,
do you like the woman? They sprayed on top of it?

(01:50:11):
Air sprayed it, you know. Do you like that as well?
I do, except for it's not really a safe for
work or home book. I mean, I know you don't
have children. The idea that the woman is completely naked
with the exception of what would be I guess that's
a string bikini over the lower area, lower region of
her body. I thought that's too many. It borders on inappropriate. Okay,

(01:50:35):
al right, well, you know, to each their own, I guess.
So we got some dus from the NFL Steelers GM
Keith Colbert confirming the team won't use any tags on
running back Lady and Bell, so that will make him
an unrestricted free agent. Mini Schmida of the New York
Daily News though Doug tweeting, there's a rumor. This isn't
factual or report, but there's a rumor that Lavian Bell
just may not be in plane shape right now, so

(01:50:58):
that could be something to look for be a free agency.
As for Antonio Bronze future, Colbert said that the team's
only gonna make a deal if they find good value.
The New York Times is reporting the Pelicans and new
general manager Danny Ferry want to talk to the NBA
again about allowing them to sit Anthony Davis for the
rest of the season. Now they could sit Davis, but
there are reports that would get find one hundred thousand

(01:51:19):
dollars for each game the forward misses seventy. Center Joel
Embiid gonna miss at least a week of action because
of soreness in his left knee. This according to The
Athletic Well. The Celtics have the Bucks tomorrow, but they
may not have Gordon Hayward, questionable for the game because
of a sprained ankle. Steve Stricker officially named the captain
of the U S Ryder Cup team. Padrick Harrington has

(01:51:40):
already been announced as the European captain. And finally, the
USA today says the White Sox are not going to
pursue free agent field the price Harper, despite missing out
on Manny Machado, will be back to the Dug Gottlieb
Show in ten seconds. But first, a word from farmers.
From a dog accidentally flooding a living room to a
dog taking a joy ride, we've covered it. Talk to farmers.
We know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers underwritten my farmers struck

(01:52:05):
fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state.
Ryan Music, you got a question, go ahead. You've mentioned
this before and you just mentioned it there with Garrett
Gilbert and you're playing professionally overseas. What was the worst
situation you had ever been in with you know, either
lack of payment or being told you would be paid

(01:52:26):
a certain amount and then it came in significantly significantly
less than that. Um well, I can't say significantly less.
I've been pretty fortunate, but um my second year playing professionally,
I was playing in Israel, and the reason I left
Israel was I was playing as an Israeli American, meaning
I was on Israeli contract, which is a ten month
contract which goes the last payments in June, and the

(01:52:49):
league technically I think ended um like May second or
something like that, and we were very we were on
the boarderline of making the playoffs, not making the playoffs,
and so there was no way I would still be
playing into June, and I would not have been able.
I would have had to stay until June to get
my like if you go back over back back home.

(01:53:10):
When I went, I left Russia, they owed me money
and they wired it to my account as they said
they would like two weeks later, which is stunning everyone
what I tell to this day, They're like, you left
without your money, You're an idiot. And I was like,
I got my money. It's crazy. So I had kind
of learned my lesson. I wasn't doing that again. And
what they were doing was they were waiting until because
I was really I was played paid in shekels, and

(01:53:32):
they would wait. They wait until the exchange rate was
was favorable to them. They might wait like three extra
days and it might only be like fifty dollars, and
I just found it to be the cheapest thing I've
ever heard of. Like, really, you're gonna wait three days
so you can say fifty bucks, Like, just put the
money in the account whatever the exchange rate is on
that day, and if I don't take it out on

(01:53:54):
that day, I may lose some money, right, that's but
they were doing. So I went to the president of
the team, and the teams was owned by the town.
I was in Ranana, which is a suburb of Tel Aviv,
and I was like, look, man, and man, just tell
me I'm gonna be paid, promised me. I'm gonna be
paid on time and paid the appropriate amount, and I'll
stay because I knew if I had to stay till
June I was an Israeli citizen, I would have had

(01:54:17):
to go to like basic training for the army. And
I didn't want to do that, but I would. I
was willing to do that because that was what my
contract stipulated, as long as I get paid. And he said,
we will do the best we can. I was like, no, no, no,
just tell me. You don't even have to put it
in writing. Look, me in the eye and tell me
I'm gonna get all my money. It's all I want
to hear from you. We will do is the best
we can. I was like, no, it's not enough, and

(01:54:38):
I was I was out. So I fled to Phoenix
and I'm gonna play for a guy, any Mass Track
who's now an assistant with the Washington Wizards, and Mass
is the coach of the A B A team in Phoenix,
and the A B A they don't pay a bunch.
I think it might have been. I think it might
have been a thousand a week. I'm out of five
hundred thousand a week. Plus you get housing and you
get twenty five bucks a day per dam And I

(01:55:00):
remember I got there. I flew directly to Detroit and
I played two games back to back nights against the
Detroit Dogs. And it was actually a really good league
because there was a small buy out and there was
all kinds of crazy rules, but it was there was
it was a much higher level of competition, even the
G League right now, A lot of pros in that league.
We get back to Phoenix and it was pay day

(01:55:23):
and none of the guys have been paid. So I
show up at practice, and granted I hadn't been through
a pay cycle yet. So I'm warming up and all
the other guys on the team refused to practice until
the owner comes down and pays them. The coaches are
there and I start shooting and there, and the owner
comes in and the Jena manager comes in. They're like, hey,
you don't have any part of their dispute over over

(01:55:43):
and getting paid because you're not supposed to be paid today,
so get to work. So I had to practice by
myself while my tea. I couldn't show solidarity with my
teammates because technically, like it wasn't like I was being
short changed, right, I got a little money up front
in order to get kind of situated. They paid for
my flight. I had just moved into like this hotel room,

(01:56:05):
and they're like, dude, get to work. Like I know,
I was running, I was doing I actually did this
in Rush as well. I'm running, I'm doing slides, I'm
doing all the kinds of different drills by myself. Meanwhile,
the other guys are sitting there and they're having big
gulps and they're like, we're not moving until the owner
comes down here and gives us our check and they're like,
all right, that's fine, God live, you're not you have
no part of this. Let's get to work. And I'm

(01:56:26):
out there huffing and puffing and sweating. It was. It
was the most awkward thing ever. And I wanted to
show solidarity towards those guys because we're on the same team.
And so when the owner came down, I was like, look,
you put me in a really unfair position because those
are my teammates. I'm their point guard, you know. But
technically you don't owe me any money yet, so I

(01:56:46):
don't have any saying it. I just want to. I
just want to tell you, like, I think it's really
awkward what you did after that. We got paid on time.
That's minor league sports, and I didn't. I don't blame
them for like, you don't get paid, don't suit up
bad news for a title contender in the Eastern Conference.
I'll share it with you next. Be sure to catch

landing on a car to a load of concrete falling

a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
We are farmers under written. My farmers took fire insurance
exchanges and affiliates products un available in every state. Now

(01:57:30):
is a fantastic trying to buy a new Honda? Is
it chop Honda dot com? Or is he your local
Honda dealer today? Every day at this time, we'd like
to run down as many stories as we can before
we get you up to straight out of Vegas with
Jonas and r J. Bell. We do so with the press,
the press, Mr buyer, what do you have? My friend, Doug,

(01:57:53):
I ain't got some numbers that were very surprising to me.
Pat Online released some odds on what two teams will
meet them be a finals. The top six best odds
all involved the Golden State Warriors, which means the Brooklyn
Nets Warriors NBA Finals matchup seems to be more likely
than a Celtics Rockets matchup or a Bucks Rockets matchup

(01:58:16):
that you would get if the Warriors weren't in the
NBA Finals. Yeah, surprised at how much it's just so
Warriors driven for the Western Conference that Brooklyn has a
better chance to make the finals than the Bucks and
Rockets facing each other in the finals. Um okay, So
that that would make it there a smart bet though,
wouldn't it? Yes? I think so. The Fox would be

(01:58:40):
a nine to two favorite. So with the against the Warriors,
Raptors would be nine to two. But the Nets and
Warriors thirty three to one, while the Celtics and Rockets
is a forty to one shot. So that forty one
shot same with Fox and Rockets as well. Yeah, that
may be worth maybe putting a little down. Um okay.
So if I was if you were to bet on
who's gonna reach the finals, who who would you better?

(01:59:02):
I would put Boston in Golden state if Kyrie is healthy?
Would I? Still? I'm not as down. I don't know.
All these people are are down on Boston, and I
don't know why. I just think when you get into
that series, in that in that of those four teams,
and I've told these guys they've they've heard it a
bunch of I say it all the time on the

(01:59:23):
Sunday Show. Watching the Bucks all season long as I have,
I'm still waiting to see how they respond in a
close game and a close playoff game because they've been
dominant in a lot of their matchups, lead the league
in double digit victories, and so when it comes to
a close game, I know Toronto is gonna have Kauai
take the shot, and oh Boston's gonna have Kyrie take

(01:59:43):
the shot, and the Sixers probably have Jimmy Butler take
the shot. I have no idea what the Bucks are
gonna do, so I give the Celtics, I guess the
edge center Joel and Be gonna mis at least a
week of action because of soreness in his left knee. Hmm.
I mean, look, he he's one of these guys where
even when he's fully healthy, you hold your breath. Isn't

(02:00:03):
it ebody's fully healthy, you'll hold your breath. That's that's
the big question. He has what feels like limitless potential.
On the other hand, is as much as I use
the word limitless, the one thing that could his body
could be as achilles heel. Indiana Athletic director Fred Glass
sent a letter to the I Use student body telling
them to quote knock off the profane chance end quote.

(02:00:26):
Following the last night's game against Purdue, some not nice
chance made towards produce center Matt Harmes, who got the
last laugh with a tip in to win it for
the Boilers with three seconds left. I thought I was
gonna talk about the all time backfires. Right, They're they're
chanting in him and then all of a sudden he
ends up getting the getting the getting the tip in.
That's classic to me. Um. I also will support him

(02:00:48):
in this. You can you can chant anything you want.
You don't need to be vile, you don't need to curse.
You just don't, no matter how much they're your hated rival.
You can make fun of people without cur sing at
them and try and be funny. Challenge yourself to being funny,
not me. The NFL network is reporting the knee issues
with Rams running back Todd Gurley were more wear and

(02:01:09):
tear this season, but sources with the Ram stilled Steve
Whitch that the team isn't concerned about Gurley's long term status,
so that surgically repaired knee of his just got sore
down the stretch and inflamed. And that's why, which is
why you don't give them. You don't give a guy
a huge contract, right, Yeah, there's I think that there's

(02:01:32):
questions as well. I mean, if this is The point
was that he had the injury in Week twelve against
the Chiefs, then missed some time at the end of
the year, then came back in that playoff game, looked great,
and then you wondered what happened against the Saints and
then in the Super Bowl, and it was Yeah, that
knee was apparently a problem. Uh. Finally, some coach on
coach crime. Former Minnesota had football coach Jerry Kill telling

(02:01:55):
Sirius XM Big ten Radio that current Gopher's head coach P. J.
Fleck didn't treat his guys well when he was taking over,
and that Fleck is quote about himself end quotes. Ye
heard that. I mean, I've heard that about about Fleck.
That's the reputation, right, he had his the reality show
and it's it is how you treat the last guys players.

(02:02:15):
Do you treat him like when you're own or do
you He's not the only guy to feel like I
feel like the new new coach said wait till my
guys get in there. Um, I don't have any problem
with him voicing his grievances. And that's the press. Get
out there and pressed. That was the press. You might
not be able to get a new a new car
with your tax refund. But you can't make your car

(02:02:35):
feel like it's brand new. All it needs a great
paint job. Coming to May go Oh today and get
your dream paint job during their tax season sales event.
