Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're sports show. Sometimes you'll say they're at cal Irvine.
It is not calor Fine, it is you see I
you see Irvine, the Anti Eaters, producers of such legends
as Wizards head coach Scotty Brooks and mccabi Tel Aviv
(00:21):
legendary star wars Uh Kevin McGee. This also was the
boyhood home of every one of my summer camps as
a as a kid. We're on the road today, live
at l a RAMS training camp. When you're on the road,
everyone knows the risks about driving drunk. I've been hit
by a drunk driver, and uh, it is not fun.
I was very fortunate to to only have some knicks
(00:43):
and bruises. But people could get hurt or killed. You
will get arrested, not could. We'll get arrested, incur huge
legal expenses, or even lose your job. If you think
driving drunk is no big deal, you couldn't be more wrong.
Drive sober, or get pulled over. And if you go
out to a lake, to the beach, to the mountains
this weekend and you've had a couple too many pops,
find somebody who will drive for you, or just uber
(01:05):
or lift or find the old fashioned taxi cab. All right,
that's that's that for the public service announcement. Let's get
to the This is a fascinating camp. Fascinating camp. Dan
Buyer alongside so is John Ramos, who we just brought.
We're having him do some social stuff because he really
he really not really needed today, You not really needed today.
So we let him Hank because it's his favorite team.
(01:26):
But think about think about the difference in twelve months.
We were here twelve months ago, and no one knew
if Jared Goff could play like man can Jariedoff play,
he might stink right. No one knew if Sean McVeigh
could make the change from transition from being a young
boyhood offensive coordinator genius to being a head coach. And
(01:47):
how would Todd Gurley fit in? Could they could they
compete in the NFC West? Now they are the overwhelming
favorite and they're not just as good. They've gone out
and added pieces to keep to Lee will join us later.
Uh Uh is one of those pieces who's seen success
at various spots in the NFL and Dominican Sue when
the great defensive lineman in college football and the National
(02:08):
Football League and over the last decade, he's gonna join us.
They went out and added Marcus Peters, super talented defensive
back from the Kann City Chiefs. They went out and
got it got better. They also got rid of Sammy Watkins,
who signed a huge deal with the kan City Chiefs,
and then stole a speedy wide receiver from the New
England Patriots. So they went out and made move after
(02:29):
move after move to get better off of a season
in which they won their division and they housed the
Seattle Seahawks, kind of beating the Seahawks into submission up
in Seattle, something that frankly has not been done since
the Legion of Boom was formed. This is the Rams
division to lose. But what a crazy twelve months it is.
(02:50):
I mean that is absolutely crazy, from the disappointment of
the first year with Jeff Fisher and the quarterback move
and being fired and being laughed because he said they
would not to be a eight and eight seven and
nine and seven seven and nine, and it being even
worse to now where there are thoughts and talks of
Super Bowl. The overwhelming favorite in the NFC West will
be joined by Sean McVeigh, less need and others live
(03:12):
from Rams Camp. So it's amazing how much a franchise
can be turned over and the prospects can be changed
with a couple of early season wins. But one of
the things I pointed out to you last year is
a lot of it is about schedule and and about confidence.
And look, a little bit of luck. You heard the
news Jason Varette hurt down the road. It's it's about
(03:34):
five minutes on the freeway from here to Chargers Camp. Uh,
they have they have visions of grandeur with the Chargers
as well. But you gotta be a little bit lucky.
You gotta not have some of these injuries. You gotta
stay away from the injury. But but the schedule also
plays a huge, huge factor. And while it's really hard
(03:54):
to see, hey, in week seventeen, what's our schedule gonna
look like? I told you last year. I told you
last year. You open up with the Indianapolis Colts, who
didn't have Andrew Luck, who were a talent deprived team,
and alliza to get your confidence, win a game at home,
something they had struggled to do the year before in
Los Angeles, feel good about yourself. Then they got the
(04:15):
Niners early in the season, you start feeling better about yourself. Um,
you start feeling better about yourself because of your early
season schedule. You build that confidence and all of a
sudden things start rolling downhill. You get into the playoffs
and it completely changes, uh, completely changes your your mental makeup.
(04:38):
This is Doug Gottlieb Show here live at RAMS Camp
Fox Sports Radio. And a guy who one of the
key editions we talked a little bit about joins me.
Now he just signed a new contract so he will
be a Ram for the foreseeable future. It's Brandon Cooks
of the l A Rams's thanks for having Okay, so, um,
what let's go back a year ago. Okay, le's go
(05:00):
back a year ago and you're transitioning from your New Orleans.
When you were in New Orleans, what do you think
of the Rams? This is a year and a half ago. Um,
you know, well, you know that takes me back a
little bit. Uh, to be honest, Um, also focused on
being in New Orleans. But they weren't like a team
that anybody would think of in terms of a championship team. Right, Like,
(05:22):
you go back a year and a half ago, it
was a different regime. A different coaching staff, completely different mentality.
Like it's I was just pointing out how amazing it is.
We were here a year ago and no one knew
if golf could play. People were wondering if the get
they could be a head coach and how all this
stuff would work. And now there's thoughts of Super Bowl
overwhelming favorite in the NFC West being in the league.
(05:43):
That's kind of gotta be amazing how quickly it's it's
changed and turned over here. Well, I think that shows, uh,
you know, as far as this league on what one
year to the next can do. Uh, you know what
a couple of great additions in our coach um and
then Jared playing well last year and now that we're
just can you and to Boo, you know, we gotta
build off of last year and can't just expect anything
(06:04):
to come to all Right, The last time we saw
you was in the Super Bowl. That was a really
rough shot of you where where you get knocked out
of the game. What's that like to go through where
you put so much in you win the a f
C Championship, you go to the Super Bowl and through
no fault to your own, your Super Bowl ended early
and it really hurt your teams and like you guys
didn't even punt that game, But you don't get to
(06:25):
see the end of the Super Bowl, get a chance
to win the game at the end. You know, it's
all a part of the game. Unfortunately happen to have
happened on the uh you know, biggest stage. But at
the end of the day, you know you take that,
you use it as few and to come back stronger
next year. It's all a part of it. Well, you
came here because they wanted to make you a long
term part of of their team. What's it mean to
(06:45):
you to you haven't played a game yet, you just
started practicing, but you already got the deal done with
less so that you got your new contract and that's
not something you have to worry about this season. You know,
that's a blessing. You know that just from coach on
his belief in me. Uh, you know Mr Cronky and
Kevin him Off and Tony and let's neat I mean
to be able to get that done, that speaks wonders
um and I'm just extremely thankful and overwhelmed with gratitude.
(07:07):
The other part is you get to work with awesome
coaches and awesome quarterbacks everywhere you've been, right, Like you're
in New Orleans and you got Sean and you have
Drew Brees. Then you go and play play with arguably
the Goat and Tom Brady, and now you're here and
you've got McVeigh drawn up, drawn up all this different
stuff for you and Jared Jared goff. What what about Brady?
Did you learn? Uh? Did you learn or did you uh?
(07:30):
That kind of that that kind of changed your perspective
in that one year year in New England. I will
have to just say his attention to detail, Uh, you
know when it comes to the game. I know that's
such a broad statement, but I mean from everything that
he does, not just on the field, but off the field,
from the way that he eats, the way that he sleeps,
the way that he takes care of his body. Uh.
To see him doing that and going into year nineteen
(07:51):
as a young guy, that helped me a lot early
in my career. So I can get on that on
that pace sooner than You're not gonna show up at
the dad bot that he has right like he's got
he's got them in muscletoe. You're not gonna show up
be like, hey, guys, listen, it works for Brady, it's
gonna work for me. No. I mean he's at the
end of the day, nineteen years going in. He's the ghost,
so he can show up however we want, as long
as you can keep producing. I know it's early. I
know you guys just started camp, but what are your
(08:13):
thoughts when you look at this offense? Uh, what's your
kind of initial impression of what you guys are throwing
out there? You know, day one, you know, we come
out here, um, you know, get the bugs out. But
at the end of the day, building off of what
we did in the spring, not necessarily starting over is
what our coach uh teaches us and coaches to us
and and so at the end of the day, that's
(08:33):
what it's all about. You know, we're coming together, you know,
you know, making our weaknesses our strength and making our
strength even stronger. You know, you're a guy who you
take the top off the defense. You've got incredible speed,
but I know you want to be more than just that,
right Like, but Tavan's gone, which means you feel that role.
There's a lot of different ways in which they can
they can use you. How can you take your game
from what you've done so far in your career in
(08:54):
Nola in New England to hear and continue to grow.
I would just say that keep building off for what
I've done over the past years, um and you know,
making this year my best year and however that comes about,
that's trust and coach getting on the same page as
Jared Um and just fitting in with this offense that's
already has been special. Brandon Cooks showing us in the
Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Trader you no longer Patriots,
(09:16):
you can tell us what happened with Malcolm Butler. Come on,
come on, come on, dude, I don't come on. I
don't know. I mean, was he was? He? Was he overweight?
Was he drinking when he was in the hospital? Like,
did you know? I don't know. Did you know he
wasn't gonna play? I don't know. Oh, come, you're not
in New England. You can't tell us. He won't to Belichick,
won't tell us. Nobody else will tell us. Somebody's gotta
tell us. I can't be the one uh three teams
(09:43):
in three years. You're buying a house here in southern California,
right because you're staying. You just sign a contracts and
you're gonna buy a house, right, you know whatever my
financial people telling me to do. Uh, financial people to
tell you by by real estate in Southern California. Maybe high,
but it's it's only going up. Welcome to Southern California.
I wish you thing about health and success this year,
and thanks for joining. Thank you very much. Brandon Cook's course,
(10:03):
star wide receiver Saints Patriots and now just on a
new contract after he's been traded over here with the
L A RAMS part of an L A RAMS offense,
which lines up Todd Gurley in the back. Uh. Cooper Cup,
who's supposed to join us a little bit later. Uh,
we'll we'll talk. We'll talk with Cooper who last year
told us that he was named after his parents former
(10:24):
dog that went missing. We'll find out what other gems
we get from Cooper Cup this year. We've all had
a bad day in the golf course. Sadly, it's not
always easy to fix your golf game, but it's easy
to find a fix. To check your engine light at
auto zone free Auto Zone Fixed Finder tool likely find
the issue, saving you money down the road. Getting the
zone auto zone. Man, he's not even a patriot anymore,
and he does the patriot thing. An you want to
(10:44):
tell us? Will somebody tell us what happened to Malcolm Butler? Please? Anybody,
anybody at all? No, that's so much. All right? Is
McVeigh joining us? I saw him pop bye two o'clock.
Shan McVeigh is gonna join us. We was here. We
could have just done him at the same time. All right,
Coming up next, Um, Listen, we all, on some levels
deal with addiction in our lives. Some people are addicted,
(11:07):
like me, to caffeine. Okay. Some people are addicted to
drugs and alcohol. Others are addicted to their phone. Don't
believe me. I have an NBA superstar who needs to
put the phone down. Get to that. Next, Live from
rams Camp, Stug Gotlant Show. Get rewarded with Snapshot from Progressive.

on Progressive. Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio Live from
rams Camp, Beautiful. You see Irvine, which is a campus.
(11:52):
It's like the unknown campus in southern California. You see,
I does not have football. They do have basketball uh um,
and Russ Turner is the coach to do a great
job the Anners over here at the Brent Center, which
is about years old. It's on the southern kind of
side of of of Orange County as the beginning of
(12:13):
what you would call South County. And it's a it's
a campus which though it's it's grown a ton in
the last thirty years, it still is lined with eucalyptus trees,
beautiful fields, great recreation center for for students. Kind of
an unknown gem in the heart of Orange County about
uh I don't know, four miles from the beach as
(12:34):
the crow flies, but there is the there's an estuary
which leads to the ocean just off the back side
of the campus. It's the side of the Rams camp.
On the other side of that same estuary, about four
or five minutes up the road is the l A
Chargers will be the Chargers camp. This is going in
a week and a half I think will be Charging Chargers.
One of the last teams UH to to break camp
(12:55):
or not to break camp to form their training camp
that just started today. They already had an injury. Well
get to that. Dan Bayer joins us here live and
he'll give us an update. Will also keep an eye
on Major League Baseball trades. We had a big injury
with Aaron Judge having a broke a chip bone and
his wrist. I'll be or in that last night with
the New York Yankees. The Yankees trading away five prospects
of the past couple of days to load up uh
(13:17):
Cole Hamil's dealt yesterday. There's a lot of stuff going
on in the world of sports, but it's still kind
of a dead time. What you do is important. When
you do it is equally important. And for Kevin Durant,
who he's had several missteps on social media, not just
(13:38):
the Burner accounts, but you go back and contradicting himself
earlier in his career calling out Lebron James for uh
and and others, or even you know, Steve Nashdwhite Howard
joining the Lakers tweeting out this is very early in
his career. Oh, everybody wants to join the Knicks and
the Lakers now, and of course later on his career
he joins the Warriors. It's not just at Kevin Durant
(14:01):
got into a got into a Twitter kerfuffle with c
J McCollum yesterday. It's when it happened. This is the
deadest time in sports. It just is, more so even
than All Star breaking Baseball, which is going back a
week and a half ago. And when there's not a
lot to talk about, stories that would normally get pushed
under the rug or wouldn't be as big a deal
(14:23):
get made into. Mountains are made out of mole hills.
So yesterday in Las Vegas, US Basque USA basketball is
having their first workout. Greg Popovich, of course, the nw
KE head coach of of Team USA, had had their
first workout. Kevin Durant was there. He met with the
media and um. In an effort to not sound defensive,
(14:47):
he sounded really really defensive. And even if I actually
believe what he's saying, take a listen to some of
the things that Kevin Durant had to say. Man, the
worst quotter worlds. It seemed a little more serious. It
seemed like you were upset, while why isn't he upset?
He doesn't seem to be upset now, So why I'm obset?
(15:08):
You bet of the f and podcast and so I'm
an upset one because he responded to something us. Well,
it seemed like he was alone saying something about you,
and then you responded to that. Yeah, but he didn't
have to say something about you, know, So how'm hi, mobster,
he went first. So CJ is not upset, but I am.
Maybe he was upset about something, So I'm an upset guy. No,
(15:28):
I guess he was upset. Forum alright, may have addressed this,
but where do things stand with you? And see Jay? Now,
after everything, they're waite down. This is not East Coast
West Coast beef, b c J. I'm gonna go have
some wine with him in New York when you get
back from China and take a picture. If y'all really
don't believe me. Yeah, So Kevin Durant, in an effort
to quell the beef, he's kind of added to the beef, uh,
(15:52):
he went. He went on earlier later on to say, quote,
I know you think I'm sensitive, but I'm somebody who's
just tired of holding blank in So like, look, Kevin
RANTI is what is it? What's that old line? It
matters how and he's not gonna take it anymore. That's
that's what he is He's like, look, I'm just I'm
tired of trying to be something that I'm not. I'm
(16:15):
going to be who I really am. I'm gonna talk
a little trash if I drop an F bomb or
an S bomb, you guys just deal with it. And
you know what, part of me just embraces that. Part
of me just loves that, right because some of these
guys are such phonies, such phonies, so blessed to have
this opportunity, so thankful for this, when the reality is,
(16:36):
it doesn't really matter if you if you tweet out
that you're blessed. It's how you treat people and how
you respond when they do give you those opportunities, right,
I don't beat don't be Twitter set Twitter, you know,
the most gracious person on Twitter? And then reality walk
all over people, which we know having worked in this
business long enough that that's the reality is a lot
of these guys portray themselves to be one thing on
(16:56):
social are not in real life. And he's simply saying, like, look,
I'm actually friends with c J. I was just on
his podcast. Just because I dropped an F bomb in
a tweet doesn't me dropping an F bomb does not
mean I'm sensitive or negative, I drop an F bomb
and the other sentence. I know that like Jim Beheim's
perfect example, if you ever hung out with Jim Beheim,
(17:17):
he has the unique ability to put an F bomb
into every third sentence. And and it's it's not an
F bomb as you would hear an F bomb in
some sort of negative sense. It's just kind of how
he talks. But I do think that Kevin Rant is
addicted to social media. I just he just and I
(17:37):
think many of us in our profession have been in
that same spot to where how much can you tweet?
How much can you how much can you respond? Sometimes
you just have to walk away because no matter how
much he tries to explain who he is and what
he's doing on social it doesn't seem to be going
all that well. We don't seem to be getting an
appreciation for who he is as of yet. Let's get
(17:59):
you today and buy or find out what else is
going on the world of sports. What you got, Dan
Doug Some news in the National Football League, Big news
for the Los Angeles Chargers, reports saying corner Jason Verrett
suffered a torn achilles in his conditioning test and is
going to miss the entire eighteen season that according to reports,
so guys at the NFL getting paid today, The Titans
making tackle Taylor of the One the highest paid offensive
(18:21):
lineman in NFL history, agreeing to a five year, eighty
million dollar deal with the team that includes fifty million
dollars guaranteed. Titans also gave Tonnant Laney Walker a two
year extension worth seventeen million dollars. The Falcons gave up
Delaney Walker, getting seventeen million nine. He'll be thirty four
in about two weeks August. Apparently the founder of Youth
is in Nashville, Tennessee. Who knew. The Falcons gave left
(18:44):
tackle Jake Matthews a seventy five million dollar extension that
covers five years. Eagles defensive back Malcolm Jenkins calling Cowboys
owner Jerry Jones quote a bully end quote for making
his players stand for the national anthem. Jenkins added, quote,
Lucky for me, I don't play for the Cowboys, nor
would I want to. Yankees officially placing off fielder errand
(19:05):
Judge on the ten d a d L with that
fracture at his risk. Cubs officially announced they completed the
trade to acquire Puture gold Hammills from the Texas Rangers,
and the Cardinals let go of reliever Greg Holland. He
signed a one year, fourteen million dollar contract this offseason.
Now he will be designated for assignment. Doug back, do
you appreciate if you think drunk driving is no big deal?
You couldn't be more wrong. Drives over get pulled over.
(19:26):
So Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio Live from Rams camping.
Another one of the new additions to the l A
Rams look. Their weakness last year because of injury on
some level and just because of skill, was their defensive backfield.
So they went out and added a guy who has
played in the biggest of games, one the biggest of
games and the biggest of matchups. Keith to leave joining
us here on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(19:49):
Welcome Southern California. Thank you, thank you, thank you man.
It's a pleasure to be here. Um Uh, Jason Brad
gets hurt in the conditioning testy. It's crazy, right, crazy messy.
Everybody needs to just cancel their conditioning test. And you
never know what that happened. You never know what could happen. Man,
just do away with them. So it's everybody's You've been
on a several different teams, everybody's conditioning test the same. No,
(20:11):
every every every conditioning test is different. Actually every team
I've been on, every every test would have been different.
Which is the easiest. Uh, with a Vets had a
pretty nice conditioning test here would what do you guys
have to do? We had a verse o climber. We
didn't even have to run, so it was on a
versus climate, man e Vets we had. It was pretty tough,
but it was it was the verse climate or it
(20:32):
wasn't running. Yeah, it's not running, so there's no chance
of planting, turning out and getting hurt and hearing something
popping and ending your season. Exactly. Yeah, So let's listen.
This is not your first time around, but it is
your first time around UM with a young head coach
who one year in has I think impressed a lot
of people. Obviously, you get your old defensive coordinator in
Wade Phillips, a chance to work with. What's your initial thoughts?
(20:54):
I know you guys just got here to camp. What's
your initial thoughts on the rams? Uh? We work hard,
We work hard, man. So we take this thing one
day at a time and uh put this put to
put all this work where we that we're doing. Man,
we'll put this work together and we'll see how it
turned out. I think the one concerned to outsiders, not insiders,
but to outsiders is, man, you got a lot of you,
Marcus and Dominican Sue, a lot of big personalities, a
(21:17):
lot of guys on one year deals are expiring deals.
Uh what give me a sense of how all those
personalities are gonna blend together to form to form the
kind of defense you need to get to the Super Bowl?
H Man? You you you talk about our names and
then uh, that's just the stuff that the what the
media portrays. Man. You you go ask Bill Belichick and
(21:37):
guys like Devin mccordy, what kind of teammate I was?
You gonna ask guys like what I'm saying, Uh, DJ
Johnson and and and Eric Barry, what kind of teammate
Marcus Peters? Well, then you really see, you know what
I'm saying, how we was in the locker room. So, man,
all of us is one thing we got in common.
We've been great teammates, you know. So We've been great
locker room guys. So the media sees one thing, man,
they don't see how we vibe as a team. You you,
(21:59):
like you said, you've been in some great locker rooms,
some great defense. As you mentioned the Patriots. You mentioned
the oppositly Denver broncos Um in terms of the level
of athleticism, the balance between having a front seven and
having a back end. Again, very very early on. But
does this and without Aaron Donald, who is arguably the
best defensive player in the league, eventually, I'm sure you're
(22:19):
gonna sprinkle him in, does this? Does this have the
looks on paper or to your eyes, to your skilled
eyes of the type of defense that can dominate a
league on paper? Is there? But I mean the paper
don't play, you know. So that's what that's what t
is was for. That's what this training camp is for.
We gotta mess as a team and uh, come out
here and work every day. See how it's trying. Not
(22:39):
you'd like to get those prime looks. I know you'd
like to. You start licking your chops. You got golf.
He's a young pupp he thinks he thinks he had
a great year. I know you want to get out
there and and and kind of level him out, level
that confidence out. You at this point in your career,
are you excited about training camp or you're just trying
to kind of get through it, not get hurt and
get to the season. I'm a side it, man. Uh,
(23:01):
this it's important. It's it's super important if you if
you're plan on being successful in February. So that's where
a lot of the work is put in. Once you
get to the season. I mean, this game plan, and
that's when you're trying to stay healthy and practice and stuff.
But it's go time out here right now. So I'm
definitely excited to put his work in. Brandon Cooks wouldn't
tell us your a former Patriot? Come on, tell us,
do you know what happened to Malcolm Butler? How's he
(23:22):
not gonna play in the Super Bowl? I don't know, man,
I don't know. I don't know. I really don't know
what happened, man, but hey, he did something wrong. Can
you believe that though? Like I mean, I guess you
can because you you understand Bill Belichick. But two in
the Super Bowl sit down, when your top cover corners
down and not not playing him that's that's the Patriots.
(23:42):
In Malcolm Butler, I don't know a keep believe. Joining
us on the Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
There is a lot of talk about the anthem thing.
Has it been addressed so far with the team? Uh?
Now we focus on football, man. We're trying to win
some games this year, man, so we're awaried about that
when it come up. You mentioned focus on football. What
is it like when some guys are getting these contracts
(24:04):
and you don't have aaron? How does that? How do
you maintain the focus on it when some of the
talk at least is about guys getting paid and guys
getting their deals redone. That's not our job to worry
about that. That's that's the front office and errand his
age and his representatives is their job to do that.
So we all got a very important job to do here.
And if you ain't focused on it, you somebody will
(24:25):
take it from you, you know. So we're worried about
our own jobs. What about Wade system allows you to thrive?
I already know it, already noticed system, So I can
just come out and play fast. I don't really gotta think. Uh,
you make a call, I know what to do and
I can just play fast. I don't really have to think.
So that's the main thing that I mean, it's got
to be great for you, right like you just your
plug and play already. Know there's a there's a continuum
(24:46):
right on one side there's athleticism and on another side
there's football, like Q. And You've always been a guy
with super high football I Q. But as you get,
as you get further along in your career, you're not
gonna have that same burst that you had. How do
you what you done in the offseason to get your
body so that you can get the most out of
it while your football, like you, is kind of off
the charts with all these years. Have you changed your
(25:08):
training if you, like you know Brady does this flexibility stuff.
If you what have you done in this offseason? I
just I still with trying, man, I still keep my
same resument. Really a lot more rehab. You know, you
a little your little older, so you get a little
more sore. So I start off with prehab, do my workout,
and I do rehab after you know what I'm saying.
So I say that's the biggest difference, man, Just a
lot more time in the training room. I keep to
(25:30):
leave joining us on the Duck Gotlips show here on
Fox Sports Radio. It is in training camp. Is there
anything in terms of off the field that brings a
team together? Like, is there something because you've been through
defenses and you know that you work better when you
guys are all a tight unit. Is there something that
you guys can do? Is there something you can say
(25:50):
or something that you've learned through your travels that makes
some defenses tighter. Just do stuff together, man, go out
to dinner, you know, hang out of somebody house. You know,
I'm saying, just go to games together. Just really be
friends and then and then you would be closer as
a group. You're like Kobe, like Lebron coming to town.
Oh yeah, oh yeah yeah. I'm trying to find season
tickets right now, but it ain't it ain't turning out
too good. I will just tell you this. You get
(26:11):
to the super Bowl, the tickets will be very easy
to come by. You'd be amazed at how quickly on
the Florida I'm not trying to sit like in the
family section. I want to be on the wood and
this is this is this ain't like Denver now, like
getting down on the on the wood in Denver, it's
not not not difficult getting down there. You gotta see.
You gotta get to know Jack, you gotta get to
know justin timber Lake. You gotta get to know one
(26:32):
of the Kardashians. Like these are the things that you
have to do if you want to get down there
super closely. You see those dude sweating and I'm learning.
I'm learning, man, I'm learning. Man. I try to get
season tickets, man, tell when they was gone. So I'm
looking at road three road fo right now? Keep to
leave row three Row four would would be disappointing for
for you, but for everybody else it would it would
be a dream. Are you a Jordan guy or you
(26:53):
a Lebron guy? I'm both, man, it's a it's an error.
You know, Jordan's the best is era. I think the
Roan is the best his era. So the game changes,
so I'm both. Okay, who's the who's the goat cornerback?
Is it is? It is Deyon the goat cornerback? Yeah? Okay,
So who's the goat quarterback? Quarterback? Who got the most range? Frady,
(27:16):
who got the most records? I would Uh, beither Brady Manning.
Brady Manning and is paying man and time. But you
you look, you played with and against um and you
obviously so you know those two. What about Aaron Rodgers
in terms of my thought has always been like, man,
Aaron Rodgers checks a lot of boxes except the number
(27:37):
of rings. Is he actually a better quarterback than the
other two? Uh? I don't know. I think Aaron Rodgers
still he's still building that legacy. Man. Once once he
gets to your sixteen and fifteen like those guys, and
I think you can be in a conversation, but he
still got room to work. Okay, maybe here's a smarter
way to ask a question. Ask the question when look
(27:57):
you we've had you on a couple of times and
you talk about watching film and knowing what's coming before
it's coming. Is there a guy that you feel like? Man,
he's a lot better than the media things he is
because I've gone against him as a quarterback, as a cornerback,
and that dude's really really good and he doesn't get
the respect he deserves. Uh. I can't think of one
(28:17):
on on the gate? Can you? Can you think of
one that you own that you you see him across
the way. You're like, I got this, dude, I want
to say it on the air. I guess you would
think of one definitely, But can you can you give
us a hint? You can you give us a region?
I might play him and then the football guys, might
you know, make him tear me up because I was
talking noise on the air. So I don't play like that.
(28:39):
Who do you? Who do you like to not not
and not and not in no disrespectful terms. You like
to talk? You you love to talk when you play.
That's part of the position. Is you gotta you gotta
you know, you have to walk it like you talk it.
Who do you like to line up against on a
Sunday have have a little chat with and matchup against.
I like, I like bringing something different to the table,
(28:59):
you know, So like playing against all anybody make you laugh?
Anybody's like, damn, you gotta you gotta stop because you're
actually making me laugh. I mean, I don't know. I
don't really don't remember the conversations after the game. It's
just you know, this is this fun while we play. Okay,
so here's your job for training camp. Find out what
happened to Malcolm Butler. That's all we want to know.
Everybody American wants to know if you're the guy that
can break the story. Visit go visit. Uh they're not.
(29:22):
You can't you. I don't know if you hurt Like like,
he doesn't even, he doesn't even he doesn't even want
to talk about last season, let alone what happened to
Malcolm Butler. I mean, you know those guys I know,
but but you have no tie to them anymore. They're
not gonna cut you out of the will. I don't
want to talk about last season and then then nothing neither.
I just want to talk about l A and and
putting these days together. It is pretty cool though that
(29:42):
like and I don't I'm not saying this is the
last year, but for you to end up here in
l A, to start in Tampa, worked th work through
those stops, and end up in Los Angeles, what what
will be a partially redone stadium this year, fully redone
stadium the following year, and and then that incredible complexion
in three years. This is a pretty cool thing to
have a ch to go to the super Bowl with
this team. Definitely dope man. Good energy in the city,
(30:04):
good energy in our building and uh, a lot of
hard working guys in our business. So man, uh we
put this thing together right, man, we might have a chance.
Welcome to l A. Thanks so much for joining us.
Thanks all right, that's the key to leave. Join us
here on the Doug Gottler Show on Fox Sports Radio,
getting some getting ready to get some of those prime
looks from uh from from from Jared Goff. But still
no word. Even former Patriots won't get won't tell us.
(30:26):
We we can't find out what happened. I would think
there's like a cornerback text chain that's somewhere like, damn,
what happened to Malcolm Butler? Why isn't he playing? They know,
they know. I think they all know. I think they know.
Brandon Kirk's definitely knows. He didn't answer, but he didn't
He definitely he was on. He was on the team
in the super Bowl. There's no chance he doesn't know.
(30:47):
Sean McVeigh is gonna join his top of next hour.
Cooper Cup is gonna join us at fifteen next hour.
Many of you I know have him on your fantasy team.
We'll talk to him about the great things he accomplished
in year one and Oh, it's two o'clock. Wait, what
time is it now? It's only Oh, it's only twelve thirty.
So they're joining us in an hour and a half.
My bad, I got a little ahead of myself. It
does feel like we've been here a lot longer. But
(31:08):
we got the cool ocean breeze, we got the eucalyptus
trees here u c Irvine and all the l A
Rams will be stopping by. This is the Doug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Do you want to
tease for me what you got coming up for us? Oh?
I know, I actually know what. This is a special
edition of game Time, one that I believe John Ramos
is going to participate in. Well, this is we've got
that's coming up later in the show. But this is
(31:29):
a Rams themed Game Time and we've got something else
for the end. How about that? That sounds good? That's
coming next on the Doug Gotlip Show Live from Rams Camp,
Fox Sports Radio. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Car shopping can be confusing with terms
like dealer price, liz price, an invoice price. True car
shows what other people paid for the car you want.
(31:50):
You can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a new or used car, Visit True Car and
enjoy more confident car buying experience. M Doug Gottlib show
Fox Sports Radio. This from Clarence Hill Jr. Covers the Cowboys,
Dak Prescott and the Cowboys, saying if players protests, they
(32:10):
won't play for the Cowboys. Dak Prescott said, I never protested,
never protest her in the anthem, and I don't think
that's the time or the venue to do. So. We
just asked the keep to leave and he said, we're
just here to play football talk about football. Um, I
I honestly believe that kind of shuts it down. It's
the it's the perfect way, like, look the smart thing
about and the Rams do this, and I'm sure the
(32:32):
Cowboys are gonna do that. Well, we might have a
little bit more to talk about with the Cowboys and
we go up there, but the charge will do it
as well. We actually talked. We I I remember asking
last year. Uh, we asked the Chargers about the anthem thing,
and they just said, Hey, we're just here to play
football and talk about football. They didn't come to us
beforehand say you can't ask these questions because the second
(32:52):
you say you can't ask these questions, now you create
conflict where didn't previously exist. So I don't know. Um,
I think DAC has obviously gotten message from the Cowboys.
You want to be a franchise quarterback, this is not
the way in which you could do. So you you can,
you can argue that, you can dispoot that. What we've
said on this show is there is a there's a
(33:14):
narrative which is just wrong, and the narrative is, hey,
NBA players have a lot more freedom than NFL players.
They don't. NBA players have to stand from the national
anthem if they're out there in the exact same way.
And NBA players can speak to their uh to their
social concerns off of the basketball court, just the way
(33:35):
football players can't. It's actually the same thing. So I
think it's I think it's it's it's gonna be faster
to see how this season goes down. The different types
of leadership, the different types of organization, and some of
it is based upon the fan basis and some of
it's based upon the ownership groups. Let's get to a game. Okay,
(33:57):
this is game time. Games side on the Doug gott
Leave Show. Car shopping can be confusing with terms like
dealer price, list price and the invoice price. True car
shows what other people in and what other people paid
for the car that you want. You can recognize a
good price were readybody knew he used cars. A true
car you can enjoy a more confident car buying experience,
Dan Buyer, what's the game today? The game today? Doug
(34:21):
is psychic? Psychic? Alright, psychic? Will Jared Goff throw for
more than four thousand yards this season? He had thirty eight,
just over thirty eight under a year ago. Will Jared
Goff throw for more than four thousand yards this year? Yes?
He will. Four Thousand's a new three thousand. Um. I
think that I think they've improved their wide receiving corps.
(34:43):
My guests would be that Cooper Coup will be better
in year two. Remember I had a big drop against
Seahawks at home. Uh, he'll be bet but he had
so many other catches. He'll be better in year two
than year was your one. I don't know if Brandon
Cooks is better than Sammy Watkins, but he's never hurt
and he's more consistent than Sammy, Well, he's more consistent
than Sammy Watkins. And I think, look, Todd Gurley had
(35:03):
a great year last year. There's no reason to believe
he won't be better second year in the system. I
think it's a really potent offense. Um. I do think
that he throws for more than four thousand yards, all right,
So I get kind of along those lines as you
were saying, will Cooper cup lead this team in any
of these categories receptions, receiving yards, in or t D
(35:23):
catches last year was second in catches, was first in
receiving yards for the Rams and fifth or at five
TV catches last year tied for third. Will he lead
in any of those three? With the addition of Brandon
Cooks and maybe even more the emergence of Todd Gurley,
H yeah, he'll I think he'll lead them in catches
and receiving guards. I do think Todd Gurley have a lot.
(35:46):
Uh it's a it's uh, it's a really well rounded
wide receiving corps. But I think he'll be the the
prime possession receiver for the Rams. And we forget about
Robert Woods, who was you know towards the end of
but what a tremendous year he had, especially early on
coming over from the Buffalo Bills. Psychic Will Todd Gurley
amass more than yards from scrimmage this season, was just
(36:08):
shy of that market leading the NFL last year. Um,
I don't think he will remember. This is a team
they open up their season. They open up Raiders on
the road, and I do think the Raiders are gonna
have a much improved defense. Cardinals at home, then Chargers,
Vikings at Seahawks at Broncos. A much more difficult schedule
this year than they had last year. First place schedule
(36:30):
this year. Uh, even the Bears game, which is on
the road, that's in December one, it'll be in bad weather,
and I think the Bears will be massively improved from
the cellar dwellers they were last year. I think I
think this schedule is formidable, and I think that he will.
He's gonna be a guy that people key on more often,
which will force them to throw the ball to the
(36:51):
Cooper Cups of the world. Psychic Will and Dominicans sue
be fined this year. Does he find last year? Sure?
I'm gonna say no, he will not be okay, alright,
keeping it keeping things in the line. What about this one?
Will Greg's air line kick a sixty yard field goal
this season? And I want to bring up these stats
(37:11):
in six? Yes, he was also injured at the end
of last year. Greg's our line has kicked sixty yarders
in two of US six seasons his career long as
sixty one. They have indoor games against the Saints, Lions,
and Cardinals, and they also play on the road in Denver.
The answer is yes, he will sixty. Ramos is laughing.
(37:32):
It matters if you kick indoors. It's like if you
throw indoors. It the playing indoors hid Peyton Manning's lack
of arm strength for years. It helps Drew Brees and
it helps kickers as well as as does playing an
altitude the ball. I mean, it's just it's it's science, man,
Don't argue with science. Will the ram Psychic repeat as
(37:53):
champions of the NFC West? Oh yeah, alright, well that
leads up to the final one then Psychic. What is
the true ceiling of Los Angeles Rams team? Uh? I
think the ceiling is the NFC Championship game. I think
that is the ceiling of this team. I don't think
(38:15):
it is a super team. That's a wrap. This is
game time on the Duck Godly Show. Here's here's the
easiest point I could make on the anthem controversy, which
conturns into a nontroversy. And I understand that that this
appears to be a win for the President and many people,
(38:36):
many of these NFL players. It's now more about the
President than it is in many ways about what they
were originally kneeling for. But here the idea that you
have the right to protest in your place of work.
Try that where you work. And I understand that, well,
we don't have a national anthem where we work. Okay,
try where you work. Try whatever you feel passionate about,
(38:58):
whatever you want to protest, which, um, you know, under
the the you know, the First Amendment, freedom of speech,
you should be allowed to do so. But that that's
not The government is not allowed to determine what you
can and cannot say about it. But your place of
where can you know? If you work at Chipotle and
(39:20):
I come up to order and you want to preach
to me either the Gospel or why you don't like
the path that the government is on, you will get
yourself fired. Because you're there to take somebody's order. It's
not really any of the any different, even if you're
more emotionally tied to your football players. All right, up
coming next, Uh, the kind of untold story of Kyrie
Irving's rehab is now being told. Our takeaway is next
(39:43):
in the Doug gottlib Show Live from RAMS Camp, only
on Fox Sports Radio. What Up, Tug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio? Do Do Do Do? We're on the road
today at l A RAMS training Camp. When you're on
(40:03):
the road, everyone knows the risks of driving drunk. People
could get hurt or killed, he get arrested, incur huge
legal expenses, or even lose your job. If you think
drunk driving is no big deal, you couldn't be more wrong.
Drive sober, or get pulled over. Stut Gotlich Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Um, let's react to a couple of different
things going on as I am here in just a
(40:24):
little bit of an echo in my ear, guys. Um.
Malcolm Jenkins said that Jerry Jones policies to bully the Cowboys.
Eagle safety Malcolm Jenkins issued a strong response to Jerry
Jones on Friday, referred to him as a bully requiring
his players to stand for the national anthem, while urging
(40:44):
owners around the league, including Jeffrey Lori, who is the
Eagles chairman, to speak up and supported the players issues.
Jeffrey has been very supportive of us from the beginning.
I don't see Jeffrey as being a bully like Jerry Jones.
Luckily for me, I don't play for the Cowboys, nor
would I want to. I think it's unfortunate you have
owners like him. They use this position to intimidate and
(41:04):
intentionally thwart even the idea of his players thinking individually,
are having a voice about an issue that affect their
communities daily, which is unfortunate. But for them, hopefully you'll
have guys challenge that they have my full support. This
is going to be fascinating, fascinating to see you. It's
an old school standoff right to where you want to hear.
(41:27):
This is one of my my beliefs in my business,
and I think this is the approach that the Cowboys
and that owners should take in their business. Um. One
of my previous stops I had, I had a boss
who I sat down with and I said, what do
you think of the show? And he said, I really
(41:48):
like your shows. I said, give me two or three
things that you would do differently. I said, you know,
I would take more phone calls. And by the way,
our phone numbers eight seven, seven, nine nine Fox you
want to call um? And I said, do you have
any data to support that we should take more phone calls?
And he said, well, you know, I've been in this
business for thirty years, and everywhere I've been in this business,
(42:12):
we take phone calls. And I said, well, have you've
been you've done local radio, if you've done national radio,
and he said, well, you know local radio. Obviously said well,
my perspective is you can take phone calls, and there
are shows that are national shows occasionally that take phone calls. UM.
And I wouldn't necessarily characterize it as as lazy, because
I do think that you can have people interject their
(42:33):
opinion to your show and it can help propel your
show and take the next step. You have to have
the right call. You gotta have a really good call screen,
or you gotta have a really good topic. You can't
just say we got open phone lines please, basically saying
please give us a call because we don't have anything
to talk about. We got plenty of talk about, but
the big thing was I will do anything my boss
has asked me to do at any of the stops
(42:57):
that I have made in national radio. But I would
hope that those bosses would have data to support their
argument for why to make a change, because dad, data
you can't argue with, and there is data to support
exactly what why and when you talk about it, think
(43:18):
about if you try. And I know this is not
maybe not why you listen to sports radio, but there
is a formula that works. You have to give your opinion,
but you have to support your opinion. You can't just
you know, you can't just do the thing where you
just give opinion, opinion, opinion, opinion, and not have some
sort of thought and kind of reason and logic behind it.
(43:42):
You have to tell people what's coming up. Sean McVeigh
is gonna join us at two o'clock West coast, five
o'clock East coast, the head coach of the Rams Canna
jo Us were live at Rams Camp. Why do you
do that? It's called the tease. You tease ahead so
that you know, like, man, I'd really like to hear
Sean McVeigh. I remember when with the Redskins. Now he's
in year two with the Rams. Okay, he's coming up,
(44:04):
and I'll if I'm doing something, I'll come back into
my or I'm I'm I'm a salesman. I'll come back
into my car in forty five minutes. Hopefully you'll you'll listen.
You keep it tuned right here. Cooper Cup is gonna
join us in about shortly after him, Like, well, I
want I'd like to hear from Cooper Cup. There's a
formula to what you do and why you're doing why,
because it's supported by the data. The data tells you.
(44:24):
You gotta tease ahead. You gotta tell people what's coming.
You gotta give people a reason to not go anywhere.
Because really good shows and not only have good ratings,
but they have what's called time spent listening. How much
time will you listen to my show? Will you listen
through a commercial break? And there's there's tricks that we do.
Why do we do those tricks because we've read the data,
(44:44):
and the data tells me, tells you what will keep
you around. If I was the owners, if I'm Jerry
Jones or an these owners, and I'm trying to make
a case for why guys need to stand up straight
and total line. Just use data. Look, we did a study,
we hired independent survey firm. We we we asked people
(45:09):
and of course we've seen the popularity wayne with the ratings.
They're using ratings as their data. Hey, the ratings are
down and this has gotta be why. And we all
know that there are a myriad of reasons why football
ratings could be what we're down last year. I don't
think the anthem was a big part of it, but
it was at least a part of it. Do I
(45:31):
think that the election? Sure? Do I think football being
on all the time? Thursday night football, Sunday football, plus
you spent all day Saturday, you got Monday football. There's
a lot of football onto we used to have Thursday
football on TV. That it's not as special. A Sunday
night game or a Monday night game is not as
special as it used to be. Data tells you. Data
(45:55):
is inarguable. You can argue maybe with the questions that
are that are asked in order to obtain that data.
But if I'm an NFL owner, I simply I I
hire a really good firm and I said, look, go out,
do a survey, find out what people think of players
protesting and though it may be a snapshot of America
that players don't like, it'll be a real snapshot because
(46:17):
the real snapshot. And I worked for a media company
and they have done the research, and the research says
there's a good portion people that are tired of it.
It's not that they don't respect the reasons behind the protest,
but they look man Sundays the day I just want
to watch football. Political news is now twenty four seven.
That is inarguable between when by the when Trump first
(46:41):
started running for president, when he became president, now that
he has president, Like, the news cycle is incredible, incredible,
but you have to you can't look at it from
your lens. You have to look at it from the
average American. He's got a couple of kids, who's got
a job day through Friday, who turns on TV on Sunday,
(47:02):
and you know the last thing they want to think
about on Sunday is are they standing or they kneel it. So, look,
some of it is on us in the media, and
that we talk about it too much, we portray it
too much, but don't get it twisted. There are plenty
of people, especially in the flyover states of America, that
work really, really hard, that have their own perspective that
(47:26):
don't want to see it regardless of the validity of
the logic behind the protest. There are some people that
don't like the validity and logic behind the protests, and
there are some people who fully supported that what We're
gonna watch football regardless of it. If I'm an NFL owner,
I don't attack this thing head on and just say, hey, man,
(47:49):
you're gonna stand on the stand up straight and toe
on the line. As Jerry Jones said, you present data
because once you present the data, the argument really gets lame. Hey,
because then you can put your arm around a guy
and go, hey, Malcolm Jenkins, I hear you. Hey, I'm
disturbed by some of the videos of of police brutality.
(48:13):
I'm also disturbed by some of the videos of of
a violent crime in the country. But you know, look,
the data tells us what the customer wants. We are
in a customer based business. The customer is always right,
and a high enough percentage of them I don't really
want this in the Nation Football League. That's the way
(48:35):
to craft a smart argument. In my opinion, Stuck Gotli
show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, Kyrie Irving has
now led us in a little bit, at least a
little bit as to uh the depth of issues with
his knee, and and the and and the comeback and
and here's a part to it which I don't know
(48:57):
if everybody has a full respect for it, is that
Kyrie Irving has said this is kind of the first
off season in which he's really had a chance to
work on his game, to rest his body. He did
an art, he did an interview with Ome Young Msuk
of ESPN, and he said the recovery process has been
(49:20):
a long, long two months. Remember, he underwent a surgery,
a season ending surgery to move two screws from his
left patella. The Celtics reveal that there's a bacterial infection
that was discovered at the sight of at least one,
if not both, of those screws. Quote. I mean, you
ask anybody with an infection, they'll probably try and downplay it.
(49:40):
It's a personal thing because your body is going through it.
I was fighting an infection in this this specific place
in your body where you can't necessarily reach it with
your hands. You gotta go in there and kind of
see what's going on. And what happened to me was
the metal wiring and the screws that I had in there.
The infection was on that, so I had to remove
that and there will be by antibiotics on for two months.
(50:02):
It could have evolved into staff. But the good thing
was we caught it early and I'm glad to get
that done. So look, he's still not working out five
on five, he's still not going full speed. But I
thought this part was really interesting now that he said
he'll easily be ready for training camp. This is probably
one of the first summers in the last seven years
(50:23):
or have actually had time to develop and work on
some things I want to improve. I've been playing USA
every summer. I was hurt one summer and we were
coming off coming off a championship one summer. It's been
a grind. It kind of caught up to me last
season and now getting a chance to really take my
time and focus on my body this summer. My read
(50:45):
into it is here's Kyrie Irving coming into what should
be the prime of his career. The net thing should
give anybody to he be geeps. What if I told you,
Kyrie's only twenty six years old. Twenty six years old,
He's got the best ross sure in the East. He's
gonna have the most rest he's ever had in an
off season, and he should be ready for a training
(51:06):
camp coached by arguably the best coach in the NBA.
I believe the Kyrie Irving is a top ten player
in the NBA. He's he's in arguably the best finishing
point guard in the NBA. The numbers would back it up,
as with the video evidence. But for a guy who
averaged twenty four a game at twenty five years old,
(51:26):
now at twenty six years old, coming into the prime
of his career, if Kyrie Irving is going to be
a superstar, you'll know it this year. This is an
all in year for Kyrie. And it just so happens
the line up with the fact that he's uh uh,
he's supported by a great cast, and he's in he's
in that contract year. We've all had a bad day
(51:49):
in the golf course. Sadly, it's not always as easy
to fix as your golf game, but it's easy to
fix with your check engine lighted auto zone, the free
auto zone fixed finer tool will likely give you find
the likely issue saving you money down the road getting
the zone auto zone. How good are the Patriots or
maybe more importantly, how talented are the Patriots? One analyst
(52:11):
opinion will blow your mind. That's next in The Doug
Gotlieb Show Live from Rams Camp. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Matt Miller writes for Bleacher Report. He's a
(52:36):
friend and a consistent guest on this show. I was, um,
I was fascinated by an article that that he wrote
about the Patriots which came out yesterday and bleacher Report. Um,
and look, there's an incredibly amount of a few praise
(52:57):
given to both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Uh. And
one front office member said, but as long as those
two m effers are on that team, they're going to
be the best. A rival scout said, they're going in reverse.
But when you have the best quarterback and the best coach,
people don't see that. Because Tom and Bill are good
(53:19):
enough to make a Super Bowl every year by themselves.
I can't imagine this league without them. Uh. What the article,
though directly calls into question, is the rest of the personnel,
all right, is the rest of the personnel on that team. Now, look,
I would agree that with Miller's assessment that this is
(53:43):
or last year's team did not have did not have
a great amount of talent. It didn't um It even
asserted that they thought the Patriots were gonna go out
and draft a quarterback, and they did. They got Danny
Etling to go along with Brian Hoyer as back up quarterbacks.
But you look at the potential roster and there has
(54:04):
been a certain amount of turnover. There has been the
number of guys to which you said, man I even
though they went out and got Sony Michelle and they
tried to replace the offensive line play, that Patriots team
last year really really lacked talent and they're trying to
rework it. Brandon Cooks was a member of that team.
He's now he he joined us earlier on the Doug
(54:26):
Gottlieb Show. He's now a member of the the New England Patriots.
Um So, I think it's gonna be fascinating to see
what they look like when they line up. Do they
have the talent to compete? Remember, no, Julian Edelman. Of
course they went out and got Jordan Matthews. They got
Philip dors Set last year it wasn't great. They have
(54:48):
Chris Hogan, they have Kenny Britt. They got a bunch
of guys that are decent wide receivers to fill in
for Edeman while he comes back. We don't know what
Edelman will be back when he comes back from that
torn a c l and from the p E D suspension.
They've reworked their offensive line, they've reworked their defense and
trying to get more talent, especially up front. But Matt
(55:12):
Miller's uh, Matt Miller's assessment of the Patriots is not
a strong one. That this team, if it didn't have
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, wouldn't beat the Cleveland Browns
is an ouch, an absolute ouch. It's gonna be fascinating
to see what happens with the Patriots because these things
(55:32):
don't Teams don't usually age well when they hold onto
their quarterback and when they try and ride things out
until the end. Dan Buyer, we were discussing earlier on
like let's go if you go through all of the
various end runs for a team, the Payton Manning one. Obviously,
he was on a great team with the Broncos a
(55:54):
loaded defense so they could carry him. Payton Manning was
it was not a good quarterback through in the football
his last year nine touchdown, seventeen in receptions when we
got replaced by by bruck Osweiler when he was quote
unquote injured and then he they gave him back his
job at the end of the season. And even though
their offense was in apt, they won a super Bowl.
(56:15):
They couldn't throw the ball at the end of the
Super Bowl to move the chains, to try to to
to get a third down to just kep on being
handoffs to see j Anderson. The the San Francisco fort
Niners at the end of Joe Montana's run were actually
a great team. They got rid of Montana because they
had Steve Young as the backup. They won a super
Bowl in Steve Young's first year. Like uh, John Elway's
(56:38):
John Elway won a Super Bowl and then ran on top,
went out on top. So this is not it's interesting
because NBA teams Jordan's won, I don't even count. The
Wizards won his last game. Birds team started age and breakdown.
Magic's career was ended early for because of HIV. Yes
just breaking down, you know, but heard it was breaking down,
(57:00):
But it's it's interesting that um as Brady seems to
be playing at the same level and maybe a slightly
lower level his football, like you, and the coaching staff
around him, has been able to and the fact the
division is terrible, has all been able to continue to
propel them to playoffs in ten win season after thirteen
win season. It's gonna be a fascinating to see how
(57:22):
this thing ages and whether or not they can in
fact keep it together, especially with how quickly and we
mentioned Peyton Manning. It's it wasn't a slow decline like
throughout that season. We obviously knew, but he was just
a couple of years removed from having the best statistical
season that any quarterback in the history of the league happened.
So he was twenty four months from that, even less
(57:44):
than that, Doug and all of a sudden lost it
and so it goes really good, yeah, and and there's
no getting it back. There's no you know, up and
down days that some days you have it and some
days you don't. When it's gone and the tank's empty,
it's done. And that's what I think is so Gary
for the New England Patriots. Also because Doug of so
(58:05):
much is made about the Jimmy Garoppolo decision and and
how they finally had to trade him because they wanted
to get something for him. Remember the deal they made
earlier in the year for trading Jacobe Brissette to the
to the Indianapolis Colts for Philip Dorset to get another
wide receiver for Tom Brady. And you look back at
(58:25):
that moves and those moves that you talk about not
getting younger. You talked about trading Garoppolo, you talk about
trading Brissette, who now is in Indianapolis, and they may
have been one of the better quarterback situations in the
NFL just because he's a backup. A lot of things
add up to it and when it goes now, the
Patriots aren't prepared for Tom Brady losing it just like that.
(58:45):
They're completely unprepared because there doesn't seem to be any
backup plan whatsoever. Yeah, it is fascinating what exactly is
happening with Belichick in that you know, it's conflicting signals.
I was told from a lot of people in the
like a Belichick really wanted to to leave the Patriots.
It would have been this offseason. He could have gone
to the Giants. The Giants organization he has a great
(59:06):
relationship with. Obviously he's a part still Parcels disciple, and
that that that would have been, that would have been
a soft landing spot for him. So if he's setting itself,
but if he's setting it up for failure when he leaves,
he's doing a pretty good job. Right. It's not just
that they trade away Brissette and they trade away Garoppolo.
(59:27):
It's getting a third and a second for guys that
are one's a borderline starter in Brissette and the other
one is a borderline star in Garoppolo. Like that, you're
under selling the products that you have, at least if
you have Jacoby Brissette. And we mentioned the Peyton Manning situation,
and we talked off the arrow about Brock Ostwaldler, how
they Broco's then at least at that time. Okay, let's
(59:49):
give Brock a shot because Peyton wasn't doing it. And
you can't say that Denver didn't believe in Osswalder because
they did offer him the contract before he went to Houston.
But the point being, it may not be the best plan, Doug,
but at least a plan and at least that there
is something there. And it's not saying that Jacoby said
would have been what Jimmy Garoppolo is it. But it's
all of these levels the safety nets that you thought
maybe you had if things would go bad and you
(01:00:11):
could keep the franchise afloat. They aren't there anymore. They
aren't there anymore. On the other hand, on the other hand,
as critical as we can be of what they're doing,
they did just go to a super Bowl, all right.
They did go to Super Bowl and they nearly won
the damn thing even without you know, they didn't punt.
And then they they're gonna go to the playoffs this
(01:00:31):
year if as long as Tom Brady doesn't get hurt, right, So,
I mean, look, we're right to be critical. People are
right to be critical to look at the roster and go, like,
I know, you change some things, man. I mean, even
I like Sonny Michelle and I think he'll be a
good running back. But you're taking a running back in
the first round like they you gotta be. That's that's
(01:00:52):
it's fast, you see, now, Sonny Michelle. It was of
the of the tandem in Georgia. He was, by all
people's assessment, deemed to be the best at NFL running
back in the SEC and that's a big statement. But
still running back in the first round when you got
two first round picks was kind of a stunt. And
you also still have James White, who's a running back
(01:01:13):
who's one of Brady's favorite targets out of the backfield.
I know that running backs everything to buy committee thing,
and you have. Isn't that the point? Though? Like, if
you're going to draft the guy in the first round,
shouldn't he have more of a role than just being
the guy you end off? The Patriots had not been
good at drafting. Theyf not. That's why I liked what
they did last last year. If remember they trade away
(01:01:34):
most of their draft picks for guys that are pending
free agents. That's what they did, That's why they got
Brandon Cooks. Uh. This year, they chose to draft more
and they continue to to make it. Obviously they're not
great at drafting. Let's get to Dan Buyer and find
out what's going on. In one second, online car shopping
can be confusing that anymore of a true price from
true car Now you can know the exact price you'll
(01:01:54):
pay for your next car. Visit Drew Car. You can
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Contract the extensions Doug
everywhere in the world of sports, absolutely everywhere. We started
the NBA, Adrian war Zenowski of ESPN reputting that the
Rockets have signed Clint Capella to a five year deal
worth ninety million dollars. There was that fifteen million per year.
(01:02:15):
It's about eighteen five years, five years ninety million, so
five four it's it's eighteen badman. Eighteen millions, seventy five
would be So he wanted twenty or twenty five and
he got eighteen, okay, and there was no market, but
(01:02:35):
he had any money to pay him, so he had
to stay with the Houston Rockets on a five year
deal UH ninety million dollars for Clint Capella, Alabama has
given it football coach Nick Saban a contract extension, tacking
on a year to his current deal. So it's now
through the numbers on this are this his annual salary
seven and a half million dollars for eighteen. It will
(01:02:58):
increase four hundred thousand dollars per season. So by the
end of the deal, Saban will be making more than
ten million dollars a year as Alabama's head coach if
he stays on through the season. How about some offensive
tackles getting paid in the NFL. The Titans made Taylor
Lewand the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history, agreeing
to a five year, eighty million dollar contract that includes
(01:03:20):
fifty million dollars guaranteed. Titans also gave Ton and Delanny
Walker a two year extension. Falcons gave left tackle Jake
Matthews a five year extension that's worth seventy five million dollars.
L A Chargers corner Jason Verrette reportedly suffering a torn
achilles and his conditioning test report say you will missed
the entire twenty eighteen season, That is likely. I will
(01:03:40):
say there's The Chargers sent on the release a little
while ago, putting him on the pup list, but no
official word that he would be out season. I can
confirm that, yeah, he's The Atlanta Falcons sold sixty thousand
tickets to their team's scrimmage on Sunday at Mercedes ben Stadium.
The Green Bay Packers would do this. Have a packer's
family night the for you know, late July, one of
(01:04:01):
the first weeks in training camp. The Falcons do it,
getting sixty to go watch them practice. Would you go
watch anybody practice? No? But what it does do it
allows fans who may not be able to afford an
NFL ticket to get into the stadium to see their
players and have a nice atmosphere in Atlanta. For as
much as we want to rip on on the braves
(01:04:23):
fans of the Hawks, fans that don't show up, they
show up for their soccer team and apparently now they're
showing up for a scrimmage. So and you know, they
show up for baseball and now they moved the stadium.
The stadium was always in a bad place in terms
of where their fans. Yeah, that was a weird like
Turner Field was weird. Like home Plate? Was that a neighborhood?
Like you know a lot of stadiums you walk in
at home Plate and that's kind of like the main entrance.
(01:04:46):
Maybe not all, but fail like that was like across
the street was like a house, you know, like you like,
there wasn't a grand entrance to Turner Field. Their grand
entrance used to be in left field. It was it
was weird. Fulton County stated spot it was right across
the street and made a parking lot in where Atlanta
Fulton County Stadium was, and they actually had an outline
(01:05:06):
of bricks of the diamond and they had a separate
section over the wall where Hank Aaron hit home run
number seven fift that stirred for years and years. But
now now Turner Field or the Old Home is a
college football stadium for Georgia State. I believe, uh it is.
That's right, Georgia State. Georgia State bought it. Uh, Georgia State.
Is uh that that's a school that you're driving through,
(01:05:28):
driving through downtown A like, man, what does that big
sprawling campus in Georgia State University. Doug Gotlan show here
on Fox Sports Radio saw this with Paul George where
he's led us in a little bit on on his
logic behind staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He says,
the Thunder, uh made a took a hell of a
(01:05:49):
gamble and it was worth it. It's always always fascinating
on how when things work, you know, there's some confirmation
biased to it, right, Like Paul George's like, wow, what
a what a great smart move. What a great smart
move uh in in going after me. But I thought
that the quote where he he said like like there's
(01:06:09):
no drama and this is where he wants to be. Um,
I kind of buy that. I mean, I'm okay with that. Look.
I think for l A is not for everybody. And
what Paul George is kind of experiencing to me, I've
experienced this myself. I I really enjoyed my time in Oklahoma.
(01:06:30):
He says, quote it was an awesome gamble. They went
all in and went blackjack, which that that doesn't he
obviously does not play cards, right right, Like this is
one of the best worst quotes of all time. It
was an awesome gamble. They went all in and went blackjack. Dude,
you don't play any cards like I don't. I don't
(01:06:50):
try and fake, you know, I don't try and fake
what I don't know. But um, they you could have
said they doubled down. They split split kings. He could
have said they split kings, right, they we they split
a split a pair of tense. Every says don't split
a pair of tense. They had a winning hand. They
had Russell Westbrook as an m v P they split
split it pair of tens and they got and they
(01:07:13):
got twenty one on both hands. Went all in and
they got a royal flush you could do with the poker.
They went all in. They went all in, and uh
and and and they they thought they thought I wasn't
bluffing and I wasn't anything, but they went it's an
awesome gamble. They went all in and went black. Check
makes absolutely no sense. He's in Las Vegas and people
(01:07:34):
are just be like, dude, dude, here's a question. This
is an honest question. Music. You can get on this
because you're more You're probably play the most poker of
any of us. Okay, this is not a poker question.
Do you guys know what all the bets are for craps? No?
Do not know how to play crops? I don't either,
but I've played craps before. I'm not gonna lie to you.
(01:07:55):
I'm gonna go up there and go like oh yeah,
oh yeah, hey, come on, come on go. You're the
guy who walks up to the table. No, no, no no,
like your money on the table and they're like, this
guy doesn't know what he's doing. Just telling me lost,
just sort of You're like the guy who just got
like Ace King at blackjack and they're like, oh, that's
a bust, and you're like, dang it, no, no, no no,
(01:08:16):
I look, I understand. I understand some of poker. I
don't understand enough to understand the math. Like I know
Ace King high is it's like that until the until
the river. I do know. Uh, I know that's the
best hand you can get, right um. On the other
(01:08:38):
hand or not the best, Ace is the best. But
but if they're if it's not the same suited Ace
King suited, that would give you a chance at a
royal flush. Yes, So I get all of that, and
even a pair of Kings is pretty good as well.
I get all that, but I don't I'll sit here
(01:08:58):
and go I don't know enough about that's I don't
go play poker. I'll play poker with my buddies, you know.
But I'm not gonna go play poker in Vegas because
I'm not sitting there doing the math, like, you know,
doing the math in my head and staring guy down
because I don't know. I'm I'm a Minno, they're a
shark now, blackjack, black chack. I can get the math
to it. I I do understand without I'm not a
(01:09:20):
card counter. I don't profess to be, but I I
can't get a sense that's the easiest one to play.
Better not be They'll come for your kneecaps craps. Craps
I don't know anything about. But it seems like everybody
has a good time, and that's why people gravitate towards it.
And you're like, Okay, I kind of know what what
role I'm looking for here, um, but I don't know
(01:09:41):
all the bets on craps? Do you guys know nothing?
Need never played, never learned, never pulled the Gottlieb where
I pretended to know so I could play. I just
have wholly avoided it because I prefer to at least
try to keep my money. I'm not just willingly give
it away. No, you can. You can go to you
know you can. You can go online and read about it. Uh,
(01:10:04):
if you make a if the shooter makes a bet
on the on the pass bet either on the pass
or the don't pass line. Other players also take time
to bet, Like, I don't even know what is the
pass line? All right, here's the pass line, the pass
line bets. I don't even know, it's so confusing. I
love always started talking about Paul George and now eight
minutes later, somehow you're looking at pass line. But then
(01:10:27):
my point is, my point is why are you Why
are you making some reference to which you clearly don't
know anything about. You know, that's like, guys, it's like
being in the ninth inning and you just go for
the end zone. You know, you go for the you know,
you want to walk off home run and you end up,
you know, getting an N one. Right, No, you that's
what I'm saying. You know what I'm saying, right, And
(01:10:47):
and you know the writers isn't there going to go
That's great, Paul, that's really great. They gambled, they went
all in and they got black jack. Oh wow, that's
kind of painful. Maybe he's just saying they put all
their chips in that one beat, and maybe yeah, just
I don't consider that all if if you said, like, look,
(01:11:09):
they they had you know, they had a seven, they
had a seven showing and a four underneath, they had eleven,
and they doubled down and the dealer flipped over a ten.
That's okay, that works in Vegas, right, doubling down That
makes some sense I don't know and I'm I'm crushing
Paul George. But the truth is it doesn't really matter
(01:11:31):
if he doesn't know the rules of black jack or
doesn't know the rules of poker. Although I do think
there's a lot of people listening to like, man, I
gotta play I gotta play poker with Paul George. Dude,
I guta signed for a hunter. I want to get
some of that hundred three or four million dollars. Clearly
has no he clearly has no clue about anything. But
that's not what he's supposed to do, right, Like I'm
not supposed to know stocks and bonds. I'm not supposed
(01:11:54):
to know about poker. I'm supposed to know about sports.
Paul George is not supposed to know about anything other
than make get buckets, get buckets, guarding multiple positions and
you can do it. Um. But look, here's a guy
from uh from outside of Los Angeles that thought he
wanted to be in l A and seemed to find
himself at home. And he's like, I'm good, and you
(01:12:16):
know what I know. I don't necessarily agree with it,
because if you grew up in southern California, even if
you're around l A. Now there is something when the
Lakers are good. It's just different. But I get it.
There's a reason I went to school. I was being
recruited by U c l A. And there's other reasons
I didn't go there initially, but one of the reasons
was like I knew I wanted to kind of get
(01:12:38):
out and see the world. And I knew that that
that other places in the country appreciated basketball maybe more
than they do it at U c. L A, no
matter how much history and success that they have had.
That that it's it's better to be a big thing,
a big fish in a small pond, than be a
big fish in a big pond. I get I get that,
I understand it. The problem with the Paul George thing
is like, dude, you had that in Indie. You guys
(01:13:01):
went to the Eastern Conference finals. They rebuilt the entire
thing around you. Then you said you wanted to get
to l A. And you end up in Oklahoma City
and now you're like, I'm good in a small town
like you were just you had your own small town.
So it kind of strikes as a guy who doesn't
have a ton of wherewithal much like when somebody says
(01:13:21):
they went all in and got blackjack, all right, Shan
McVeigh top of next hour, but up next, Nick Wright
thinks Kevin Durant is uh is unlike any star athlete.
Give you my thoughts next, Doug Otlive Show, Fox Sports Radio.
You know Sam Donald still not in camp and uh
(01:13:44):
the dispute between the Jets and their first round pick
is due to something that's called offset. Now, I don't
you guys know what offset is? Right? So offset and
some people have this another contracts. The basics of it are,
if the Jets cut Sam Donald during his rookie contract
and then he signs with another team, if there's offset
(01:14:04):
in the deal, the new team would not be responsible
for whatever amount Uh that the uh that the that
the Jets were still owed right, there would be what's
called offset. So if you don't have offset, and the
Jets would have to pay no matter what the amount is,
(01:14:25):
and then you could it's called double dipping. If Donald
signs a new contract with a different team after getting cut,
he would get money on top of that. That's contract
with no offset. Remember Baker Mayfield signed a contract with Offsets.
Josh Allen did as well. By the way, they're both
represented by Jimmy Sexton of ci A. For the record,
I'm represented by CIA. Uh. Jimmy has represented me in
(01:14:49):
in coaching negotiations before. He is a great college football
coaching agent. And having the offset is an argument usually
reserved for coaches, not for players, and this one is
all about precedent. It has nothing to do zero to
do with Sam Donald. That's the That's the part that
(01:15:09):
sucks about it for Sam Donald because there is zero
point zero, zero, zero one percent chance Sam Donald has
cut during the span of his first his rookie contract,
right they have Josh for County's not gonna start right
away in the first four years of his deal. He's not.
He's not gonna get cut. Offset has nothing. They're not
gonna cut him. They're not zero chance, but I'll go
(01:15:31):
I'll go zero zero, zero point one percent chance that
there is. This is simply about the Jets desperately needs
Sam Donald as their poster boy to be in camp
and CIA and Sexton trying to trying to change the
language of other NFL first round draft pick contracts. Taking
offset out of it and using Sam Donald, frankly is
a little bit of a pawn and I just I
(01:15:53):
get it. I understand it, and that's kind of what
happens in business. I just don't love it. Every day
at this time, we we play for you a portion
of a show on Fox Sports Trade or Fox one
Sports one that precedes us. We call it and now
what Fox say? Car shopping can be confusing. Terms like
dealer price, list, price, invoice price. True car shows you
(01:16:14):
what other people in area pay for the car that
you want. You could recognize a good price. We're ready
buy a newer used car. If it is a true car,
you enjoy more confident car buying experience. We call this
what did the Fox say? We're live here at you
see your vine inside of the L A. Rams training camp.
Earlier today, Nick Wright had this to say about Kevin
Durant and his use of social media. You made a
choice that absolutely was your right. That did make some
(01:16:37):
members of the media question your basketball integrity, but that
was as far as it went. Everything since then is
why you are now in this storm. That stuff is
not that Lebron, despite being a spotlight for eighteen years,
has never found himself in that Anthony Davis, the most
(01:16:57):
controverst thing he ever did trick us into thinking he
shaved his universe the that like there are a handful
of superstars in this league, we will dissect and analyze decisions,
public moves. James Harden dealt with this. James Harden found out,
I'm a little too famous to go to the strip
club every night. I'm going to get criticized for that, like, period,
(01:17:19):
point blank. Maybe when I was the sixth man, I
could do that. Now that I'm m VP candidate, people
are going to talk about that. Russ found out. Okay,
people are really going to talk about do people hate
me as a teammate? Am I a good or a
bad guy? There you go, So, Kevin Durant, it's not
like we, the cabal that is the media, spun a
(01:17:42):
wheel and said, oh Katie's turn. It is repeated decision
after decision, all by the way involving some form of
social media that has made us realize he is different
than every other superstar we have in major American sports.
(01:18:03):
He is he's unable to simply separate himself from the
conversation which is taking place on social media. And the
problem with social media, The biggest problem with Twitter, which
is where he's He's stepped in it several times. Is
there is a record of discussions, right, Like, they don't
do a very good job of tracking some of the
(01:18:23):
some some of us. They track our hot takes or
our predictions and will miss on things. You talk enough
and you're gonna say something stupid. You tweet enough and
you're gonna tweet something stupid. That's just the reality of it. Okay.
Also earlier today, Chris Mannox, We're not gonna have time
to get Chris manns. We'll play for that for you.
Uh um, would I have time to play for that
(01:18:45):
for you this hour? Look, the thing about Kevin Durant
is I actually believe that he wants to take the
gloves off, that he wants to be. It's like he
wants to be a sports radio host. You know, he
wants to take calls and tell people what the truth is.
The problem with that is one we have his past
statements too. That's not really the job of a superstar player.
(01:19:08):
And the more he tells us that he's not defensive,
that he's not sensitive, it makes us feel like he
is defensive. He is sensitive al right. Next hour, Sean
McVeigh is gonna join us. We're gonna ask him about
what he learned during his first year's head coach of
the rant, first year, youngest head coach in the league history.
What do you learn? Gotta be a ton and how
(01:19:28):
he's gonna put all these egos together and potentially get
to a super super Bowl in a second year in
southern California. That's next. And Doug what uf Doug Godly Show,
Fox Sports Radio coming to you live from beautiful sunny Irvine, California,
the campus of U See I that's you see Irvine
(01:19:51):
if you're not from SoCal site of l a RAMS
training camp and uh, let's just get right after it.
Joining me is the now set in your head? Coach
of the Rams who went to the playoffs and uh,
really kind of change the dynamic in the NFC West.
Sean McVeigh joined us here your second training camp last year. Dude,
(01:20:11):
you were like a flat line. There was no super excitement.
You were focused. It was like you were meant to
be here. Can you be honest with us, You had
to be a little bit nervous last year first meeting
with the team. Oh. Absolutely, you know you still get
nervous in a good way. You know, it's excitement. But
I think it's amazing to think how much has gone
on in the last year. We were just sitting here
a year ago when we got here, and you know,
(01:20:32):
here here we are starting our second season. A lot
of excitement, a lot of exciting acquisitions that we made.
But you know, I think our guys do appreciate that
kind of one day at a time mindset. But it's
been good to get going in now day two here
we go. It's it's crazy, though. We I talked about
this two hours ago when we started the juxtaposition of
last year when your thirty one hadn't been a head coach,
Jared goff a lot of people on the fence as
(01:20:53):
to whether or not he could play, and then you know,
could the offensive line protect? Could you did you have
the skill position players? Now this year, not only are
people all in on Jared goffin obviously the team all
in on on Todd Gurley, but the acquisitions that are made,
the and Dominican sues, the Marcus Peters, the keep too
leaves um. I mean, every everyone seems to include in
(01:21:16):
front office going all in. There's huge expectations. How does
how do you change your message, your management of this team,
your management of those expectations in the early days of camp. Well,
I think in terms of our process and kind of
the standards that we want to establish and maintain with
the things that we focus on, Doug, they'll remain the same.
But certainly it is a little bit different in terms
(01:21:37):
of the expectations that that people the outside sources have.
But I think our guys have done a good job
of not really letting those outside influences affect the way
that we approach our everyday behavior in terms of how
we operate, and that's really how we meet, how we practice. Uh.
I think there's a there's a confidence, there's a swagger,
but there's a humility and understanding that there's thirty one
other really good teams in this league and really good
(01:21:57):
coaches and players, and we gotta do a great job
putting ourselves in a position to be ready to ride
when September tenth comes around. I know you don't want
to look back too much on last year because it's
about this year. It's a different team, a different year.
But I gotta point out that asked weapon of the
Seattle Seahawks. That was that was that that was the change,
right like the Rams even before, you had always been
really competitive with the Seahawks, but no one had gone
(01:22:18):
into Seattle and done that to the Seahawks. And just
I mean they they surrendered to you. How big do
you think that was for the mentality of this organization,
not just saying that we're good enough to win this division,
but we're we're dethroning the team that consistently has dominated
this division. Well, I think that was a big game
for us last year. But I think we still have
(01:22:38):
such a huge amount of respect for the Seattle Seahawks,
the consistency at which they've really competed and done such
a good job under Coach Carroll's leadership. And you know, really,
you know, the Cardinals are gonna be really tough, and
you look at all the excitement around the forty Niners,
and I have a whole lot of respect for Kyle
Shannon and Steve Wilkes with with the Cardinals. So it's
really tough. But I thought that game last year was
instrumental in terms of when it took place, what we
(01:23:00):
were able to do. I thought it was a great
example of guys kind of playing their best when we
needed it, and you know, we talk about that all
the time. Reference in coach wouldn't with achieving competitive greatness.
And that was certainly a fun game for us. But
you know, you know, as an athlete, you know everything
can kind of change where it was a good day
for us, but you play that same team the next
week and you've got to find a way to bring
it in and understand that each game is kind of
(01:23:20):
its own entity and really each play in this league.
What do you think guys like golf learned from the playoffs?
Because it is it's a higher level of football, and
the Falcons came in a team that had been the
Super Bowl and that were they were playing their best
football at the end of the year. What can be
taken away from that disappointing loss to the Falcons at home? Well,
I think anytime you get a chance to play in
an atmosphere and environment like that with a game of
that magnitude, you know, you always want to do a
(01:23:42):
good job. You know, it starts with me. You know,
I would think I made a lot of mistakes in
terms of putting our players in the right spots. But
but but again, when you really look at you know,
what we did, you know, kind of look at as
our football philosophy, Doug. You know, it always starts with it.
It's all about the ball and other than points. In
this league, when you look at the history over the
last handful of years, there's no greater indicator of wins
and losses than turnovers and and taking care of it.
(01:24:02):
And you know, we lost a turnover battle zero two
and against a great football team. That's gonna be tough.
But I think he took a lot of good things
really from the entirety of the season, but especially that
playoff game. And uh, that's what you like so much
about him, He's really coachable. Well, the front office obviously
reacted to what was I think a weakness and some
kinds of injury and just some kind of personnel in
that defensive backfield. Right, you go out and you get
(01:24:23):
Marcus Peters, you go out and get a key to leave,
and of course you've entrusted Wade Phillips to run your defense.
How much does it change this team that you bring
in two players of that caliber to the back end
of your team. Well, I think in terms of just
the overall philosophy in the way that Wade likes to
run his defenses. There's a premium on playing a lot
of you know, man coverage and then some zone match
(01:24:44):
principles where those guys are asked to play on an
island or asked to match up with individual players. And
I think when you just look at the course of
these guys careers, uh, they take the ball away, you know,
they get their hands on the ball, they get it
back for the offense. And and those guys are hard
to find. And I thought it was a great example
of Less doing a nice job being able to acquire
those players via trade. You go getting the dominance Sue
and he's released by the Dolphins, and and those were
(01:25:05):
things that when you looked at it, which Remaine Johnson
hitting free agency, lose him to the Jets, Cavon Webster
tears his achilles, We were able to resign to kel Roby,
who did a great job for US franchise, tag LaMarcus Joyner,
you feel really good about John Johnson. So those two
are gonna be really instrumental pieces. And Sam Shields as
a player too that has had a lot of success
in this league that unfortunately with the concussions. But he's
(01:25:26):
back and he looks really good as well. Aaron Donalds
in the conversation, the best defensive player in football and
he's not here. How does that? How do you handle
game planning, putting together defense, putting together a team with
the unknown of when, let's just I would assume he's
going to be here, but the unknown of when he's
gonna ride. That's a good question, you know, And and
(01:25:47):
it's something that we kind of dealt with a little
bit last year. So it's it's been something that that
we've had to do. We'd love Aaron to be here.
We're proactively working to find that solution. But in the meantime,
you know, the guys that are here, they're doing a
good job working. Bill Johnson are defensive line coach, does
an excellent job developing depth, uh and you can see
some guys really stepping up and continuing to get better.
But when he comes back, if if that date does come,
(01:26:09):
you know, we'll certainly all be excited and welcoming back
with open arm. How do you communicate with him? You
text with them, You stay in touch with him. Oh yeah, yeah,
we keep in touch, you know. And when with some
of those things, Doug, there's so many nuances and levels
involved in the negotiations. You know, I just want to
make sure he's doing good, how's he feeling. And we
kind of let the agents and uh, you know, the
powers that be kind of discussed those types of things.
We certainly want to try to figure it out. And
(01:26:30):
I know our people feel exactly the same way. And
his representation has been good to deal with, and hopefully
we'll find a conclusion. All right. I think a lot
of people know that. Obviously at thirty two years old,
you start in this business with the Tampa Buccaneers, and
of course your first game this year is against John Gruden.
Not only did your coach under John Groom coach and
his brother, right, and with the Tuskers. Yeah, and I
(01:26:53):
could be in Jay in Washington and it was right.
So you're like all Gruden all the time. Um, But
now he hadn't been in the league for a decade.
On the other hand, he's he's been going around studying
everybody and watching everybody, watching all these players. What's that
gonna be like for you? Well, it's pretty surreal, just
because I couldn't be more grateful for the Gruden family.
You know, a lot of the opportunities I've gotten in
this league are our thanks to them, and it goes
(01:27:15):
back to my grandfather and their dad, Jim Gruden Senior,
working together with the forty niners and um, you know,
feel really fortunate to even be in this role. In
a large part of that is due to the mentorship
that bou Ja and John provided. You know, He's stayed
up on the game and uh, he's grinding, he's working.
Those guys will be ready to go, but it'll certainly
be It'll be a fun night. We know it'll be
a great atmosphere in the black Hole on Monday night,
(01:27:37):
a little little cradle of coaches, mine of Ohio ties,
all the Ohio stuff. I know people are gonna hit
you up for give me your best, give me your best.
Do you do? You don't have You've lost some of
the Ohio right with the accent. You don't do the
Gruden like so many others do the Gruden. I don't think,
you know. I've heard some people tell me I have
an accent and some don't. But I don't. I don't
really know if I really do. Okay, Girly signs a
(01:27:59):
new deal. We were happened a discussion about the dynamics
of Todd Grilly in comparison to some of the other
running backs you worked with with some of the best
in the league. What what elevates Todd Grilly is? Is
it the ability to to catch the ball as well
as run It? Is it what he does in pass
protection that we don't see, you watch film, you work
with him on a daily basis. What allows Todd Gurley
to be viewed as one of those special backs so
(01:28:21):
much so that you guys have given him that long
term deal. Yeah, I think it's kind of all those
things you mentioned, Doug. The biggest thing is is you know,
there's really nothing that you can't do with him. He
he can contribute in the past game. He's gonna be
great in protection, understands where he fits. You can utilize
him on any run scheme, and I think those types
of guys that can, you know, create one play drives
are really hard to find. You look at him have
an eight yard touchdown run against the Titans. You look
(01:28:43):
at him go fifty seven against the Seahawks, so on
just a run. So anytime that this guy gets the
ball in his hands he's capable of taking at the
distance and and those types of explosive playmakers that are
also really impressive above the neck and can do a
variety of things. You don't find guys like that last thing.
Jared Goff had an outstanding sophomore season for you last year.
But as we've all come to learn watching and as
(01:29:06):
you know better than any of us, Lee gets a
book on you. Lee Lee says, Oh, this is what
he likes. This is his favorite route, this is his
favorite hot this is his favorite thing to do. What
what's the next step when when you break down tape,
which I'm sure you spent most of your offseason doing.
What's the next step for Jared Golf? I think it's
just continuing to take ownership of our offense. We always
(01:29:26):
talk about the quarterback being an extension of the coaching staff,
understanding the intent behind all the play calls, and that's
where we've got to do a great job as coaches
as well. Knowing that we have put a year tape
out there, we've got to be mindful and cognizant of
our self scout and making sure that we're mixing up
some of our tendencies putting our players in the right spots,
but in terms of taking steps in the right direction, Uh,
just kind of naturally uh easing himself for really just
(01:29:49):
becoming a leader. Because of who he is and how
he handles himself on a day to day basis, He's
really been a joy to be around. Is he Is
he different in terms of his confidence, because sometimes you
know that first year can beat you up. We Is
he different in terms of his confidence? Is he is?
Kind of how he carries himself. I would say that
one of the things that's always been impressive about Jared
as he's always had an even killed demeanor disposition. Even
after the rookie year. I didn't sense that is that
(01:30:11):
he didn't have a lot of confidence and belief in himself.
And I think that's kind of what really sets him apart,
is that mental toughness that he does have. Is that
you know, he's really unfazed by kind of the outside
influences and kind of what things are said about him.
He's always had that confidence last year, anytime you're able
to have some success and draw on that, it can't
help but make you feel good. But he's got an
appreciation for how he's got to earn it every single day,
(01:30:32):
and how many things are involved with the nuances of
the position. But he's doing a great job right now.
He congratulations. Eleven wins, playoffs and all the expectations are
all because of the job that you and your staff
were able to do helping turn this group around. We
wish you nothing but health and success. Get ready for
the season. We'll see you on Monday night, Oklin. I
appreciate it, Doug. Good to see man. That's Sean McVeigh
joining us, head coach of the l A Rams. Were
(01:30:53):
on the road today, live at RAMS training camp. When
you're on the road, everyone knows about the risk of
driving drunk. People could get hurt or killed. Yeah, you're welcome.
That was a great interview. I appreciate that you could
get arrested and kur huge legal expenses, even lose your
job if you If you think driving drunk is no
big deal, you couldn't be more wrong. Drive sober or
get pulled over. It is the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox
(01:31:14):
Sports Radio. What we're gonna do instead of going to
break for any of our stations nationwide, We're pleased to
be joined by a guy who was named after his parents. Uh,
former dog. That's really what what we learned from Cooper
Cup last year. Cooper Cup, who is the second leading
receiver in terms of receptions, leading receiver in terms of yards. Uh,
joins us now on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox
(01:31:35):
Sports Radio. How are you, man? What's what's just like
year year two? Year one, you were everybody's everybody was
paying attention to you. We heard how productive you could be.
Year two. What's the feeling like going into training camp?
I think there's just a little bit more of just
a calming field. You know, you know, you know what
to expect coming in here. Um, what just even down
to the terms of what the schedule is and um
(01:31:57):
having a graft now of the offense, and um the
guy is that you are spending twelve hours a day
with two and um, you know it really just feels like,
you know, we're coming out here, were just coming out
playing foot both a bunch of my friends. Now, so
you know that's how you that's how you love playing football.
How do you maintain that kind of the same hunger
and drive when everybody's been telling you how great you are? Uh?
(01:32:17):
Because last year is about proving yourself. Last year's like
why you play a little lower level football, Like how
you put up good numbers, But let's see you can
do in the NFL. Now you're do in the NFL.
How do you maintain that stame? I want to prove
it to you a kind of mentality. I just don't
think that that's it should never change what anyone else
says about you or your game. I mean, if you're
not driven by your own belief, in your own expectations
and you, I just don't think you're gonna survive playing
(01:32:39):
this game. So you know, that's why I kind of
fall back on your My expectations for myself are always
gonna be higher than anyone's expectations for me. It's it's
it's very early in camp. Obviously you guys have had
O T A s. But you know, to leave, he's
gonna talk a little bit to you. You have you are? You?
Do you? How do you handle that when dude start
start chattering at you? That's just it's just part of it.
It's just part of me. You got a few guys
over there they call you Sunshine. What what's what do
(01:33:01):
they start throwing at you? Last year in the NFL. Nah,
you know, I I try to turn my turn my
ears off to all that stuff. You know, I really
just don't listen to it. So what you learn if
you could say, like, look, we talked a little bit
after it was well after the Seattle drop in the
end zone. Of course you guys went up and thump
Seattle and paid them back. Uh, there were a other
couple of little things. But what did you learn when
(01:33:24):
you take away you look back on your own tape
of season one the NFL? Would you learn, uh that
you you've gotta be ready to move on? You in
this league, You've got seven days to turn around from
Sunday to Sunday. And if you aren't able to move
past your mistakes, learn from them, rectify them, and move
forward to that next game and preparing for that the
best that you can, you're just gonna get caught up
(01:33:44):
and fall farther behind. So the biggest thing was moving forward.
There's there's gotta be something about And obviously there's a change.
Tavan's gone, Brandon Cooks is in his place, another speedy guy,
but seems to be a better wide receiver. Uh, you know,
Robert Woods, his lack of health I think obviously helped
you get more balls. What's your thoughts on but no
Sammy this year it feels like the team is coming
(01:34:05):
around to Hey, this is You're a guy we want
to build around long term. What are your thoughts on
the wide receiving corps now as opposed to the one
we saw last year in ramp uniforms. Oh, I've got
a ton of respect for Sammy Um as a ball player,
as a as a man off the field as well. Um,
but very excited for from sixteen million a year. Wow.
But but Brandon coming in this year, Um, just in
(01:34:28):
terms of the way he's messed into this team, how
he's just from day one challenged our room to just
to step it up and really just helping um lift
guys up around him. To Um and the attitude he
takes into this thing. It really speaks volumes to him
as a as a in terms of his character and
um just raising guys up, not just in football, but
just as uh, you know, everything goes on behind the
(01:34:49):
scenes as well. Cooper Cup joining us in the Doug
Gotlic Show on Fox Sports Radio. We talked to Coach
McVeigh just moments ago about Jared goffin having met him
before during the draft, talk with him last year here,
talk with him at the Super Bowl, hung out with
him a little bit when he was in Orange County
in the summer. Like he's kind of always the same
guy he's He doesn't he doesn't seem to get too high,
he doesn't seem to get too low like. Is is
(01:35:11):
that just an act? Or is that really how he is?
He really a lot more energetic and rambunctious like or
is that really how he is? No, That's just that's
who he is. I remember the first time I met him,
we went to UH barbecue out with our age and
my very first time medium. He was the exact same
person then as he is today. UM and Uh. You know,
I think that's a testament to UM to him. I
(01:35:32):
mean just as a football player, you know, you you
go through a lot of stuff as a quarterback, highs
and lows, and Burnabie will keep that even keel um
and just be Jared goff through all of that. I
think is UH is a huge thing for us. All right,
So what's it like to walk into locker room you
see and dominan sue and you know he's on your
side now, and I'm not complaining at all, or would
way rather him be in our locker room than anyone else's.
(01:35:52):
I mean, he's a he's a big he's a bad dude,
but he's like one of those guys. He's on your team.
You couldn't be you couldn't be more thrilled. It feels
like the team feels like everybody in the league senses
you guys know there's something special. How do you manage
those expectations with the all in mentality of let's pick
up Marcus Peters, let's go get in domin Kin, sue,
(01:36:13):
let's go now? How do you manage that considering people
are expecting even bigger things than the eleven wins in
the playoffs last year. It all comes back to that
first question, UM, if you're playing this game, your expectations
for yourself has to be higher than anyone else's. UM.
As a team, that's that's the attitude we should be
taking to You know, our expectations from for ourselves are
higher than you one else expects of us, and so
(01:36:33):
and what were we Because of that? We got modeled
our whole off season. Everything we do, every moment, every
minute of every day has to be a reflection of
those goals that we have for ourselves moving forward. Um,
the guy you went against last year that you have
the healthiest respect for you like, man, that guy is
really really good. Ah Man. There are so many of them, um,
you know. I think the first one just in terms
of just you know, early in the year, having just
(01:36:54):
that wake up of seeing someone playing at a very
high level. Um, you know was Josh Norman um in
their second game against the Redskins and didn't get a
ton of reps against him, but just early on coming
into that season seeing someone do what they do at
a very high level. Um, I think that's someone in
terms of someone not on our team all right, well
(01:37:14):
and incredibly impressive first year. We expected to add to
that all the fantasy fans out there. He said, like, hey,
five touchdown is not good enough, dude, Gotta have some
more tychdown receptions this year. Best of luck, most importantly,
stay healthy in the training camp in the preseason, and
we'll talk to you season roles on. Thanks for joining
you very much. Cooper Cup of the l A. Rams
joining us here live at Rams Camp on The Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, coming up,
(01:37:38):
coming up next? Uh, Well, Kevin Durant finished his career
in Oklahoma City. We'll discuss that next. This is the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio Doug Gotlip Show,
(01:38:01):
Fox Sports Radio. I heard this earlier today and I
was fascinated by Chris Mannix. Yeah, who sports NBA Insider.
You can also hear him on the weekend on Fox
Sports Radio. Who's co hosted? Somebody's guest hosting with Bucky Brooks.
I believe his guest hosting with him this weekend. Isn't
he somebody's guest hosting with him? Uh? This weekends? Bucky
Brooks is guest hosting with him this weekend. Anyway. Mannix
(01:38:24):
was on earlier today with Colin Cowherd on The Herd
and he had this to say about the future of
Kevin Durant's career. After next season, He's gonna have eighty
million dollars in his pocket from the last three years
and probably three championships. So at thirty years old, Kevin,
Kevin Durant is basically going to have a blank canvas.
(01:38:46):
He can do whatever he wants, knowing his legacy is secured.
And no question, there'll be a lot of teams out
there trying to recruit him. I think Kevin Durant wants
to hear those recruitments. I think Kevin Durant will be
open minded next summer when it comes to where he
wants to go. And I keep going back to Oklahoma City,
and I keep going back to the fact that everything
we know about Kevin Durant, the sensitivities, how much he
(01:39:08):
hates the fact that people say jumped on Steph Curry's bandwagon,
and the fact that there has been no bridge burned
with Oklahoma City. The relationship with Russell Westbrooks seems to
be the best it's been since he left Oklahoma City.
I know calling that there's some financial gymnastics you have
to do to get a Kevin Durant on the roster,
but I really believe that come the end of the year,
(01:39:29):
he's gonna take a long look at Oklahoma City. He's
not going to Oklahoma City. You're not gonna Okahoma City.
He had a he bought an apartment there. Uh he
bought an apartment there for uh like three million dollars
about two apartment buildings. Like it's right down the street
from the arena and then he he like knocked down
the walls and it became one like gigantic one. And
then he took a two million dollar laws sold it
(01:39:49):
for a million dollars. Would have been a great bye.
By the way, if you had a million dollars to
buy that thing, it's pretty awesome. Um. You know, he
closed down his restaurant there and somebody else bought one,
and it put it into play. Like I think all
of the things could be accurate about about Russell Westbrook,
but I think I think that that chapter has closed,
just has Do I think the Lakers are a possibility? Sure?
(01:40:12):
Do I think the Knixer possibility absolutely? Absolutely DC. Maybe
I would say in order if he was to leave
Golden State, Nicks would be one, um, Lakers would be two,
Wizards would be three, and then everything else is you know,
what would happen with the Bulls as they continue to
(01:40:32):
remodel themselves in some other big market. He's not going
back to Oklahoma City. They have Paul George, They've kind
of moved on. It's one of those things in life
to which we've done this before, where you try and
move back into the same neighborhood and you moved out,
and you're like, our friends are still there, our kids
all each other schools are saying like, it's not a
static environment. It's not the same. And um, I think
even Lebron learned that in Cleveland, that even though he
(01:40:54):
wanted to be the same and in many ways some
ways it was better in terms of their the outcome,
the fact is that it's never really comfortable again. People
who get remarried. Colin I I talk I say this
about cow Cowher. I don't know if you guys know this.
He's shared at a Coypel times on air. I've shared
it probably too much. His first wife and he got
divorced for a very short period time. They got remarried
(01:41:15):
right and of course obviously his wife and his wife
Kim his wife, and by the way, they're great, both
incredible ladies, not just to put up with him, but
they're just awesome women. Um, doesn't work that there's a
reason you have divorced to begin with. There's a reason
he left to begin with. I don't I don't see
you going from Yeah, you have to have lived in
Oklahoma and lived in Oakland, like Oakland is as diverse
(01:41:41):
and future thinking and forward thinking as any place in
our country, and Oklahoma City is not that. Not that
it doesn't make Oklahoma City a bad place and Oakland
a great place, doesn't make Oakland, uh great bad place
and Oklahoma City a eight place. But it would literally
(01:42:01):
feel like trying to go back in time. And I
don't see that happen. I just that does not know
one I've I haven't talked to anybody to say all
these things could be true. It doesn't one plus one
plus one plus one plus one quit equal three. But
it's still just one plus one plus one. Let's get
to Dan Buyer and find out what else is going
(01:42:22):
on the world of sports. Dan. A lot going on, Doug,
But quickly to wrap up what you were just talking about.
Wouldn't the power struggle of Duranted Westbrook be times a
hundred than what it was when he was there the
first time? Why would Russell, you know, give anything to
Kevin Durky. I think the idea, I think the thought is, well,
Russell Westbrook, he windn't win a title, he wouldn't win
(01:42:46):
a title, and so he'd say, like, look, we're better
together than we are divided. But I don't again, I
don't said, yeah, it doesn't work. How about this quick
note for the NBA wos the news earlier today, Rockets
Clint Capella agreeing on a five year extension or ninety
million dollars. Was a restricted free agent gets now eighteen
(01:43:09):
million dollars per year. There wasn't much of a market,
didn't get an offer from another team, ends up signing
five years ninety million with the Rockets. This just in
from the NFL and the Players Association, releasing a statement saying, quote,
a short time ago, the NFL and NFL p A
concluded a constructive meeting regarding the anthem policy and the
very serious social justice issues that have been the basis
(01:43:32):
of some players protests. We are encouraged by the discussions
and plans to continue our conversations. That's it, pretty plain.
Nothing there but the NFL and Players Union saying that
they have spoken. The Titans have given Taylor the lan
a contracted tackle five years, eighty million dollars that includes
fifty million dollars guaranteed. Titans also gave Titan Delanny Walker
(01:43:54):
a two year extension. The Falcons gave their left tackle
Jake Matthews a seventy five million dollar extent him that
covers five years. You broke the news, Doug Jason Vat
of the Chargers and told this last hour done for
the year with that achilles tendon injury that he suffered
in a conditioning test in Loant of Falcons sold sixty
thousand tickets to their team's scrimmage on Sunday. Finally, Alabama
(01:44:16):
has given a football coach, Nick Saving a contract extension
through the season. We told you about an hour ago.
It's one year at tacked down to his current deal.
But this new deal allows him to get a raise
of four hundred thousand dollars each season. He's gonna make
seven and a half million dollars for the eight team campaign.
I'm sorry, I was like Nick Saban, good, Nick Savan
got more money. I was just gonna say, you know,
(01:44:38):
he needs there's a guy that needs more cash. It
was good. I mean, he was really starving, clearly struggling
there in Tuscos with seven million dollars a year. The
the gap, but you were you were talking about it
yesterday with with Chris Sims. The gap is because you
have to have somebody third you. You try to put
somebody third. But the gap in college football for the
(01:45:00):
top coaches. I mean, Saban's got an argument of being
the best of all time. Urban as an argument of
being top five coach of all time, and there's no
one else, and you devil Sweeney's accomplished more than Jim Harball.
But the point of this whole thing is is Saban
is in a different stratosphere, as is Urban Meyer than
any of the other hundred and twenty head coaches in
college football. It's really really amazing, and so it's the
(01:45:22):
one guy who'd say he's really really worth it. You
know what's also interesting about Saban and the juxtaposition of
Saban versus, for example, a Jim Harbaugh is you know,
it doesn't always work immediately, right, Like it took him
five years you get to work at Michigan State. It
took him really four years, four years untill they won
(01:45:44):
the national championship at l s U. It was his
you know, his third year at Alabama that they won
a national championship. Um, and uh so it doesn't, but
it is the level of consistency. I mean, what's what's
crazy about it is, I mean he's some of the
wins were taken away whatever um in the first season.
But he's won twenty seven and twenty at Alabama. One
(01:46:10):
and twenty. They have, they have, They only lost in
since two thousand and eight. They've only lost more than
two games one time. They've only lost two games three times.
Like that's crazy, the level of consistency. I covered college
football for the Network about ten years ago, and I
covered in Savan's first season. They had a neutral game
against Florida State in Jacksonville, a game that they lost.
(01:46:33):
Wasn't a big deal, but the breakout game really for
the Alabama program. If you remember, Matthew Stafford was the
quarterback at Georgia. It was a blackout game in Athens
and it was a huge game on the ESPN the
entire you know, they're in their black uniforms. Georgia was
Alabama comes in and wins. I think thirty five. Nothing
was the final score. Even though they lost the Florida
in the SEC title game that year, that like that
(01:46:53):
was that was the breaker. So even a year and
a half maybe of when it really turned for him
to turn Alabama, it's been dominance ever since. Online car

little controversy going on here with the crew that actually
happened on Twitter, and so we need to figure this out.
(01:47:16):
Did Cooper Cup call me Dave when I when I
wished him health success? You know? Uh, he said we
heard thanks. It has been reported to me that he
may have said thanks Dave. That would that would be
that would hurt because I thought me and Cooper had
a thing. Right. He shared with us last year the
details that he was named after his families, uh now
(01:47:38):
deceased dog. Which is that's sharing intimate details, right, that's
really sharing intimate details. So do we have the tape
to play? All right? Take a listen, guys, this is
the end of my sit down with Cooper Cup. Are
you very much? Dave? Yeah? Yeah, it's a day that's
the Dave hurt? What do you mean a sign that
(01:48:00):
says the Doug Gottlieb Shop. What do you think it was?
Do you think that he said David everyone with a
D or do you think that he you look like
a Dave that he thought he knew, because there are
two different things like maybe he just was like Dave
and Doug four letter name starts with D and just
got it wrong. Or do you think maybe he looked
at you and said, oh, that's that's that's Dave Jenkins.
(01:48:23):
Can I share with you guys a story? Alright? So
I probably shouldn't share the story, but I will um
my previous place of employment. This is going back because actually, yes,
I told you guys, yesterday was the six year anniversary
last show I did at ESPN. So you go back
like three months before that, three or four months, and
(01:48:43):
the way it works in media is you know you're
you're up, and I think that year I was up
in September, so like six months before. You can technically
legally meet with people from other other networks. And so
I went into CBS and the Black Rock, which is
CBS headquarters, and I'm me with Sean McManus, is the
president of CBS Sports, and there were actually there was
(01:49:06):
actually two other guys named Dave in the meeting, but
Jean McManus actually called me Dave twice in that meeting,
and I walked out and all my agent one at
the time I wanted to talk about was like, man,
I thought this would be great. They really want you.
This is good. They're starting a radio network, then you
gonna have a TV show. You could move back home
(01:49:27):
to southern California. And I was like, dude, you're burying
the lead. He's like what. I was like, he called
me Dave. He's like, no, he didn't. I was like,
he called me Dave twice, two times. Well, Dave. It's like,
now I don't think he was talking to you. There
was Oh no, he actually didn't call me David. Call
me Dan. Sorry, Dan, tell me Dan right up grade
(01:49:47):
And there was a Dan sitting next to me. The
Dan sitting next to me. But I'm telling you what,
that was a hard one to get over. This one
I don't feel as hard. It's not as hard to
get over because there are a million Dave's, a million
Daves in sports media, and but I do. I thought
we had a friendship and apparently now we just have
an association. That's really what it comes down to. Write like,
(01:50:10):
your friend doesn't not know your name. Yeah, that's true.
So next time we have Cindy Kats who books this show.
Next time we have Cooper cup on, we're gonna have
to re establish that we're not friends, We're just we
occasionally have him on radio, and I'm just another Dave.
I'm just another you know, lame white dude on radio headset.
As long as the checks not that, as long as
(01:50:34):
Donner is that what you're doing? Don't know what everyone
just telling me, yes, Ryan music. So is it any
consolation that it at least was somewhat close, like like
Dan had said, where it's Doug Dave four letters they
both start with D. I mean, if he had signed
off like all right, thanks Kevin, I mean, then it's
like he had no interests and even remotely understanding what
(01:50:57):
or who he was talking to. You know what, I
think the closer it is the worst now that I
think about it, because I mean, if he said thanks Bob.
You know what's interesting. My brother's name is Greg, and
there have been people that have that don't know my brother.
They call me Greg. They'll be like, oh Greg, Like
do you call me Greg? I'm sorry? I mean Doug, right,
and like, actually my brother's name, like it's it's really interesting,
(01:51:19):
but you think it's worse. Actually, that is a silver
lining there. The reason being is then maybe he didn't know,
like if you just thought you were somebody else it was,
but maybe somebody said, hey, you're coming up with Doug Gottlieb,
and somehow in that fifteen minutes he was like, Okay,
Dave Gottlieb. That that's why I'm almost thinking that just
(01:51:39):
left that right there, which says for now and we're
gonna have signance. This says the Doug Gottlieb Show. This
is Doug gotlie Show, by the way, live at RAMS Camp.
We're reacting to Cooper Cup. It was awesome who joined
us earlier today. But he did call me Dave on
the way out. Thanks, Copper. I did now the copper Cup,
Copper Cup, I do like a good copper cup when
I have a when I have a Moscow mule. We
(01:52:00):
got the press coming coming next right, Yes, I'll be
doing your all Rams press that we're doing it now.
We're doing a Name that ram kind of like name
that tune. You and John Ramos are going so when
I'm doing a game at game time, we're doing a
game at at press. Yeah, I mean we've done a
lot of the you know, h it's why not make
it rams them. John's here, let's make them work. Sure,
let's do that. Next and the Doug gottlie on The

you've been waiting all day for it, Let's get to
the press, the Press. It's a special edition of the
press as we are going to have some fun with
an old game called well if you guys may remember
to name that tune? Do you remember named that tune? Doug?
(01:53:02):
Do you remember that game? I know what it is,
I don't actually remember. Do you remember named that? What happened?
The name that tune was? They would give to contestants
the opportunity to bid on how well they knew a song.
For example, you would say, I can name that song
in five notes. If John would say that, Doug, you
(01:53:24):
could say, well, I can name it in four notes,
and you would then go back and forth where if
you didn't want to guess it in three, John could say, Okay,
Doug named that tune in four notes. I have got
notes about former Los Angeles St. Louis Rams. Okay, that's
why we're playing. Name that Ram. And so we've got
three levels of of let's just say difficulties here. Level
(01:53:48):
one is the easiest. Level three will be the most difficult.
I want you guys to play. Name that Ram. And
the first category is quarterbacks. Okay, quarterbacks in Rams his
three johnsons, you're the Rams fan. There are seven note
seven stats that I've got. How many do you think
(01:54:08):
you could name a Rams quarterback in? If I gave
you these stats, I'd say, Doug, I can name that
that Ram in five stats. Oh, I can name it
in for stats. I can name it in three stats.
I could not name it in three. In three stats.
He is the Rams all time leader in passing yards,
(01:54:30):
second all time and touchdown passes in a Rams uniform,
and he started in five playoff games. Name that quarterback.
That's he the third one was the giveaway? John? Is
he bluffy? Me? I would say it would be uh,
Kurt Warner? John? That is in come on, five playoff games?
(01:54:56):
Five playoff games? Do the math, John, math? How many
Super Bowls they Kurt Warner playing? He played in? Two? Okay?
How many playoff games at minimum? Do you have to
play in to play in the Super Bowl? Uh? Three? Yes?
There you go. There he gave you the answer. Come John,
all right, what do you want me to lose? That's
the point of the gay. I want you lose. But
(01:55:19):
but John, I want you to take up. I even
said he's giving it away with the third one. All right,
we'll get we'll get it back here. Alright, let's I
can only game. I can only name like four or
five Ram quarterbacks anyway, So my depth of knowledge, I
respect yours actually round to two points. So Doug's got
one point. We focus on running backs of the Yeah,
(01:55:42):
a lot of good running. There's some good running backs.
We've got six notes. You can start the bidding. I
can name it in six tense, in five go in
four Doug named that Ram. All right, he's the team's
all time leading rusher his career long run was only
fifty yards. He has tied for second all time in
(01:56:03):
rushing touchdowns with fifty six and he amassed three thousand,
three hundred and twenty four receiving yards in his career. Uh,
Marshall Falk, that is incorrect. It was do you know
who it was? Uh? Eric, Eric Kickerson, Steven Jackson, Steven Jackson,
(01:56:26):
you know, the unknown, the un the unspoken, like the
great running back in Ram's history that no one will
ever mention Stephen Jackson. Nope, Nope, Hall of Famer. Shouldn't
be in the Hall of Fampton Hall. Jerome Bettis, Yes,
people forget Jerome Bettis was awesome and then bad at
the end, seemingly done, and then he went to Pittsburgh.
You know, Jerome medicin in Detroit, by the way, that's
(01:56:50):
a new one. And in Bettist too. In my argument
has been in in the in the time where they
were multifaceted bats like a Marshall fall because you know,
yes he was one demension, but yet he's in and
the likes of Fred Taylor. And he had a terrible
one time he won a Super Bowl with the Steelers.
He had a terrible fumble in the ANC champion game,
which almost cost him Zoer Bowl. Anyway. Other than that,
(01:57:10):
I was to play two to one. John is up.
This is the design three level three and we moved
to wide receivers. There are eight notes, Doug. Since you trailed,
you can start the bidding. Eight notes. Six whoa uh?
(01:57:37):
I can name it in five, name it in four,
Go for it. Okay. He played for six teams in
his entire NFL career, including the Rams, Cardinals, Seahawks, Bears, Panthers,
and Colts. He's giving away all the team never fumbled
in his seventy five games as a Ram. He was
once sacked trying to throw a pass and he's white.
(01:58:00):
There it is white wide receiver cuts it down there, John,
there are your four notes. Here's the funny thing. We
had a conversation. It was on the tip of his
tongue and he couldn't remember. I still can't remember it, John,
for all the marble's name that Ram and I can
see him, but I can't remember his name. Is he hot? Oh?
(01:58:26):
I can't remember his name. I will be here wasting
time for it. So okay, alright, maybe dog knows it.
Do you know the the receiver? I know, I know
he has his name, Okay, Kevin Curtis. It was no
Ricky preven I didn't have to get it right to
(01:58:48):
name that do thank you that no one named the player.
But so I forgot Ricky, Yeah was he didn't. I
just forgot it. Slot machine was that was? That was
he was called the slot machine. Slot machine. And he
caught the ball against Tampa, didn't he? Yes? Against Tampa?
What was the Swiss screwy thing happened to the ground.
(01:59:14):
That was one of the first big uses of replay
in a championship game was Bird Immanuel for the Tampay
Buccaneers Tampaire Buccaneers coach by Tony Dungee that later went
on to win a Super Bowl with John Gruden. And
that is the press. That was fun was the press
all right dark Thanks to the l A Rams for
providing us so many great guests. You can hear them
