You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, brought to you by Farmers.
At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so I cover almost anything.
When it's game time, have an experience player help you
stay ahead of the game. Put their experience in a play.
(00:42):
At Farmers dot com, we are Farmers. I have a
site that tracks uh that it's the I don't track
it other somebody who works for this site tracks every
team in college basketball, and by doing so, By doing so,
(01:02):
it allows me to make uh, it allows me to
do my job right. And so I happened to see this.
This is funny that today Minnesota just took down h Louisville,
And my logic behind Minnesota beating Louisville was boy, I
just don't think Minnesota shoots the basketball all that well, right,
(01:26):
They average about five and a half made threes a game.
They don't have a true point guard. Some of their
best players like Abe Calcer are just freshman and I
and and though Louisville is not great, you know, push
comes to shove their ability to shoot the basketball, Minnesota's
inability to pressure them, because that's how you beat Louisville.
(01:48):
I thought would end up, you know, winning the game
for the Cardinals. That was actually my thought. UM Minnesota
is tied for fewest three pointers made in all of
college BASKETBA was three fifty three teams, So they're roughly,
(02:08):
how's my math, three hundred and forty three, right, three
out of three fifty three in terms of overall three
pointers made this entire season. Coming in today, they had
made a hundred and seventy eight threes. So what do
they do, John Ramos, They hit a bunch of three.
They hit a bunch of threes, which is part of
(02:31):
the beauty of this thing. You have a large sample
size thirty four games. You have a small sample size
one game. And if you can't deal with one the
fact that small sample size doesn't allow averages to always
play out, and two you can't handle the back door
cover that Yale pulled off. Hey, this is big boy
(02:52):
betting sports. Okay, this is big boy big boy brackets.
Here we are and madness has already begun because you
have an upset. You have a team which was the
exception to the rule of their season with Minnesota beating Louisville,
and you have a team that was down big look
(03:13):
like it didn't belong, figured out how to play against
l s You did come up short, but came up big.
And all that matters to many people out in the desert,
which is they covered, and they did so instellar fashion,
hitting a couple of threes down the stretch and l
s U only made enough free throws to make it
a five point advantage when it was a six or
(03:34):
six and a half point lie defending on where it
went up. That's the beauty of March Baby, small sample
size and backdoor covers. But the other part two it
is this. I know you're trained. You've been honed by
the media, by social media, and even by people who
(03:56):
used to be athletes, claiming that somehow we are a
pressing the name, image and likeness of all of these players,
and why don't you ask yourself, could you have picked
Traymont Waters out of a lineup before you saw him
play for l s U today? Now I could have
because I was in Connecticut when he was in high school.
(04:17):
I was there when he signed with Georgetown, and then
he got out of his letter at Georgetown and went
to l s U. And had he been able to
play at Georgetown, j T three got fired before he
have arrived, would have probably kept his job. He's that
good of a point guard he and a good point
guard makes that much impact on your program. But you
had never heard of him before today, and now you
(04:40):
have because of the tournament. This was a season which
lacked all kinds of buzz, with the exception of one guy. Right,
you ask guy on the street in Los Angeles, can
you name one college basketball player they like Zion? Can
you name a second one? Nope? Bill Walton, Right. But
(05:02):
that's what we do. We create stars, We tell you
their stories, we sell them to you, and as long
as they keep playing and keep winning, we continue to
make them bigger than life. That's the beauty of this
thing anyway. Uh. And then there's other news that I
(05:23):
also think is really interesting because it goes counter to
the immediate reaction on social media, and I gotta tell
you it makes Mike Freeman look really really bad, Ryan Music,
What was uh? What was the tweet? What was the
number that Mike Freeman put out there in terms of uh,
what he had been told was the overall value of
(05:45):
the Colin Kaepernick lawsuit against the NFL. I think he
thought it was like forty or somewhere between, like forty
and sixty million something like that. Um, it ends up
being less than ten million dollars for each for each
uh he said it was, Uh, Mike Freeman at Mike Freeman,
(06:08):
NFL and a number of NFL team officials are speculating
to me that the NFL paid Kaepernick in the sixty
eight million dollar range. Missed it by that much as
it came out alert today. That's less than ten million
dollars now look less than ten million dollars for a lawsuit.
(06:28):
That's less than ten million dollars that Colin Kaepernick didn't
previously have, Right, Let's just be honest. That's not a
bad day's work. And then, of course we could be
a jerk and factor in lawyer's cost essentially take off
a third and However, it's paid out and realized. It's
not a massive settlement, and it's also not an admission
(06:49):
of guilt. I told you this at the time that
what the what the NFL was paying for was was
not because they were scared of colue of of collusion,
which is really hard to prove. It's also very difficult
to disprove, really hard to prove in the court of
(07:11):
law unless it's just plain, painfully obvious there, unless somebody there,
unless it's a group text where one owner to a
bunch of other owners say like, hey, let's keep this
jerk out of the league. I know people in the league.
No one I know said that there was any such
collusion that took place. Doesn't mean and it doesn't have
to be every team to be collusion, but uh, it
(07:39):
does have to be multiple teams, and no one I
knew thought that collusion took place. What you pay for,
you know, you know when you're gonna settle a lawsuit.
It actually still makes sense for the NFL even if
collusion didn't take place, because Roger Goodell would have been subpoenaed.
He would have had to testify, and you don't want
(08:00):
that because you don't you can't control what he's asked
on cross examination. Additionally, the text messages of owners who
are millionaires and billionaires who want those text messages uh
kept quiet. They don't don't want them in the public forum.
I'm sure there's some embarrassing stuff, not just between owners,
(08:21):
but also owners talking about other owners, and maybe owners
talking about Roger Goodell. So even if you weren't in
the wrong, if you have a bunch of money, sometimes
a smart thing to do is, hey, let's just find out.
Let's just grind him and settle for as little as
possible and make this thing go away. And that's exactly
what seems to have happened. Exactly what seems to have happened.
(08:48):
Evan Daniel is gonna join us. He's live in Las Vegas. Right,
We're gonna get a play by play of the temper
tantrum that took place in Las Vegas at a sports
book because Yale Backdoor covered against l s U. Next year,
can we take the show to Vegas? I've never been.
I mean i've been to Vegas. I've never been to
Vegas for first Thursday of the n c A tournament.
(09:10):
You've been music? I have one year and how was it?
It was fantastic. Where did you go? What did you watch?
It was at the Caesar's And it was the year
that who did Albany upset? And Albany I can't remember
who they upset in the first round or not. Um,
they didn't upset anyone, but they backdoor covered at the
last minute. I remember we were going crazy because one
(09:33):
of my friends had I don't even know right, did
you did you have chairs there? Did you have a table?
Standing room? Standing room? Daniels has chairs there? No table?
If you have chairs normally is like a thousand dollar
minimum for the day. So you gotta be sat for food,
food and drink, not not gambling. So I think I
(09:54):
find that to be super super interesting. Um music, I buyer.
Have you ever been? No? Do you want to go? Right?
Sure that that was very noncommittal lesson. No, No, it's
not that at all. As I'm I'm just as happy
sitting here as long as I'm watching games. That's that's
(10:17):
all that matters. We have a great set up here,
I'm not I mean I have I have three t vs,
four TVs. One apparently is not tuned to basketball. I
don't know. Can we can we change that one, but
I we can watch all of the games. And this
is awesome, this is fantastic. It's called the commercial break, Doug,
do you guys, you guys did switch this one. Okay,
I didn't know you switched that one. I've been paying
attention to the radio show while you guys have been
(10:37):
paying attention to the games. So look, here's what we'll do. Uh,
Evan Dane is gonna join us. Let's talk. We'll react
to Minnesota, who has already taught us a valuable lesson
in small sample size, and to Yale, who's also taught
us a smart lesson in in in the back door cover.
And we'll get you ready for the rest of the
(10:59):
sleigh of games. And what do we make of the
very interesting tweet, very interesting tweet by John Calipari late
into the night. All that's up coming next, But first,

Evan Daniels uh scout dot com. Also UH Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports One, Fox Sports College Basketball covering recruiting college hope.
(13:50):
And right now he's covering the scene in Vegas. What casino? Um?
What casino? Are you watching a casino? Are you? Are
you in the elevator? Where are you are? You have
an echo that is terrible. I just got off the elevator.
I'm walking through the newly renovated Palms Casino. Alright, newly
(14:14):
renovated Palms Casino. You have chairs there? I'm told, how
is your setup? Give me, give me the give me
the picture of what you're set up is in the Palms.
The setup is awesome. We're second row back in the
sports book. There's five of us. We've got five chairs.
You see every single game Massive TVs. Then you really
get much beard in that. What was what was it
(14:35):
like in there? Uh? First, when we'll get to Minnesota
in a second, when Yale didn't win the game, but
at a back door cover at the end. Yeah, there
was so I think the uh, the guy next to
me may have had the over um and he just
started punching, full on temper tantrum, just punching the chair
(14:59):
in the uh, the table in front of him. It
was pretty comical. And then, uh, you and I discussed
last night, like, look, Minnesota just doesn't shoot that well.
So of course Minnesota ends up, you know, making eleven threes,
including Jordan Murphy, who had made six all year, made two.
Like that's kind of the beauty to the tournament, right
is You've got this large sample size of the entire season,
but a small sample size you can have. You can
(15:21):
have some exceptions for sure, And and you know, Richard
Pettino would tell you that they've they've been a pretty
poor shooting team. Um, but when when Jordan Murphy and
a mere Coffee are locked in and playing really well,
I think Minnesota is a pretty good basketball team. If
you throw in Gave Chessler making shops and then do
(15:42):
pre making plays, they're a tough out. And you know,
you and I talked about this. I don't remember the
podcast or off air, but like the Big Ten like
has beat up on each other and I think these
dudes are like glad to be out of league play
in place in New Bluff, no, no question. Um. And
and everybody's kind of it's a very physical league, it's
an older league, it's a player development league. And you
(16:04):
know everybody has you scouted very very well. Um. Okay,
So does that change your overall view of Big Ten
teams or is this just a one off? I think
it's probably too early to tell. But like we're going
to see Minnesota against Michigan State now probably so they're
right back to the Big Ten grime. Um. But I
mean I think top to bottom, the Big Ten was
(16:25):
the best conference a c C. I think i'd probably
call a C the best conference because of the top tier.
But you know, night in and night out, the Big
Ten's probably most difficult. Um. And I think that's easier
than note. Yeah, yeah, it doesn't mean that Indiana belonged
in the tournament, but it should be noted that Indiana
lost twelve out of thirteen Big Ten games, and they
dominated Marquette when they played them. You know, they were
(16:47):
pretty good out of conference as well. So I mean
that does that does kind of support your argument? Now? Yeah,
and I mean look, Indiana beat Michigan State twice and
Michigan States the class of the Big Ted. I mean,
I think that's support it said more than anything, just
the fact that night and night out, anybody can beat
anybody in that league, Evan Daniels joining us UM. Okay,
(17:07):
so last night John Calipari put out some tweet that
basically said, hey, you know, before you go to bed,
just know this is kind of the only college job
I want for people who aren't in the know like
you are. What what was that in regards to? Yeah?
That was that was in regards to the rumor circulating
(17:28):
that U c l A had interest in him, which
you and I discussed on on the Herd yesterday. And
I mean, I think it was pretty evident that U
c l A either had or was intending to make
a play for Calipari. And as soon as that came
out and media, he likely took advantage of that. And
(17:49):
I'm sure he used to get some sort of race.
Do you believe he coaches the rest of his career
at Kentucky. I believe here I leave that he coaches
the rest of his college career Kentucky UM. And I
said this on the show yesterday, Like, I actually think
that u c l A Is probably the only job
(18:09):
he would take outside of Kentucky. But that mean didn't
mean I think he was gonna go there, and I don't. Um,
I mean, it wouldn't surprise me to see him coach
on the NBA sidelines. But like at the end of
the day, like is there can you do much better
than Kentucky, especially with the amount of money they're paying,
I mean, justically pricing himself out of jobs when you
factor in possible living in ten million dollars and the
(18:33):
lifestyle he leads Doug Gotli show here on Fox Sports Radio.
So who does get the u c l A job. Oh,
that's a great question. Um. You know, I think that
I think that they're gonna they're gonna try to make
a play at Tony Bennett. I think there's interest level
there and talking to the multiple sources, and you know,
(18:54):
then then I think it probably goes to some sort
of lists as like Nick Cronin and Mike Hopkins. Um.
It's uh, it's interesting to watch it. They don't play out,
but my guests would be, you know, they take a
fire a shot at Tony Bennett and see what happens.
But why would he take that? I don't know that
(19:14):
he would. I mean, you and I discussed this as well, Like,
I don't know if it's Tony been at a social
guy like his back. It seems pretty happy it Virginia.
He's got Virginia rolling. I don't know that he would.
Actually don't. I actually don't think he would. I don't
think he would. I don't. I don't think you would either,
(19:35):
which you know, it's like I mean, and look, I
think you see he's doing the smart thing by not
uh you know, but but by taking their time and
offering up to big guys. But um, anyway, um okay,
Belmont is about to tip against Maryland. You have Bellmont winning, right,
Why I think Belmont will win two games? Um? They
(19:56):
I mean they run good stuff Doug and they running
Chris and they've got shoot They've got a bunch of
skilled dudes that can that can shoot it, that can
pass it. Um. I really like Dylan Windler offensively has
been a little inconsistent as lately, but he always rebounds
sick good size. I like the guards and Kevin mcplane
and Grace and mostly can distribute and run a team
(20:18):
and the big kid inside I can pass, they can
score it there. One of the most efficient offensive teams
in the country. They're effective. Silvergal percentage is absurd. They
shoot it well from three. Uh, there's something about that
team I could just see going on a little run.
They're coming off a pretty quick turnaround. Yeah, I actually
don't think that bothers them as much today. More more,
(20:40):
you know when they play, if they play on Saturday, Like,
don't get me, don't get it wrong, it's quick, but
you know when you hadn't and they hadn't played in
a while. Remember before they played in the first four, right,
they hadn't played a game in a in in a
week and a half million was two weeks um. So
I don't I actually think you benefit from having played
a game because there's no real nerves you're land on.
(21:01):
You know, you're you're you're playing on house money. Now,
what I think is fascinating is what happens if they
play Saturday, and can they make Bruno Fernando come out
from underneath the basket and play defense and and and
play the analytics game, let him post up and shoot
over length and not let anybody else any course, looks
like Auburn. Auburn's up seven looks like they'll hold on.
(21:23):
It's interesting, you know, of all the schools that have
been involved, uh in the FBI sting, they're the ones
that seems to have, uh not just survived, but prospered
in spite of it. How has Bruce been able to
do that? Well, I mean, they're he's obviously recruited well,
and he's gone into Atlanta and gotten out from the
(21:45):
best players like Truemo kikiS is thriving for them. Well,
he's got a bunch of guys on the team that
can make shocks. And for the first time in a
long long time, Auburn is one fun to watch and winning.
And there's a lot of you said about that. Um,
I mean, but they've they've really really recruited Georgia well
(22:06):
maybe as well as anyone. Um, John Morant. The world
is going to get to finally see John Rent, not
just him dunk on people. He might dunk on Marquette.
You're somebody who's seen in place since high school. What
should they be expecting to see, Well, they're gonna see
obviously a tremendous athlete. But what I'm really impressed by
(22:26):
is his creativity with the ball, his visions. He is
just such a gifted passion and he can do with
either hands. He can get into the painting and find
guys where you can drop in runners floaters. You know,
he's he's kind of wiry, strong, like he lacks strength,
but like you can finish through contact. Um. I think
he's gonna need to improve his shooting. But man, he
(22:48):
is just such a gifted passer. He's creative with the ball,
and he's just fast and athletic, like he's he's got
the NBA type speed and athleticism. Um, Oh, give me
one other name of one other guy we're gonna learn
about today that most of America doesn't know about one
other name of one other guy. Um. I don't have
(23:11):
today's list in front of me. Uh? Does um? Syracuse? Baylor?
Who else? We're already watching Bradley and stay Northeastern Kansas? Um? Well, Northeastern? Um?
Um doesn't count. If you can't pronounce his name, you
can't say big guy. You can't say big guy. That
doesn't That doesn't count? Good point? Um? Does? Does? Uh?
(23:38):
You know? For your everyday fan? Does Virginia Tech play today?
I don't know if they played today or tomorrow. Justin
Robinson doesn't count, But like, I think he could be
huge in this n double A tournament getting him back
with their perimeter. Why why why is he such a
difference Baker Because he's the stars drink for them. I mean,
(23:58):
he's such a gifted passer, facilitator who can make shots.
I think he's kind of the heart and soul of
that team. He's shooting it above from three. Will you
match him with Michael Alexander Walker, who could maybe be
a hot sun pick in this year's NBA draft. You
could put that back forwards up almost as it's anyone
in the country. I fully believe that. Okay, last thing,
(24:21):
um for do you do you have entertainment purposes only
on any of these games? Because it makes it a
completely different like you're not just enjoying this to enjoy
the moment, are you? Well? I'm actually not a big gambler.
I haven't placed one that I don't know. I haven't
really figured out if I'm gonna do that. I'm just
here to watch the ball. My buddies are all gambling,
so I don't know if I'm just kind of enjoying it, honestly, alright,
(24:44):
just a spectator. Evan Daniels at the Palms, reporting from
the Palms, day one. How many days you say on
Friday and Thursday and Friday through the weekend Friday Saturday,
apply to McDonald's practice on Sunday. Okay, all right, and
thanks can in the casino here, maybe we can, maybe
we can hear from screaming, uh no, streaming. Time's still
(25:05):
the first quarter for most of the first half of
most of these things, although New Mexico State trying to
make it close, as they have cut the lead to
seven against Auburn with a minute fifty to go. Thanks
so much, Evan, everybody see it. Let's get you Dan
by get an update on all of those games. Yeah,
under two minutes to go in Salt Lake City, Auburn
with the seventy three sixty six lead on New Mexico
(25:25):
State in a five twelve matchup, ninety seconds left to
go in that one. Florida State in a four thirteen
matchup against Vermont is up forty to forty three. They're
at the twelve minute mark, you know, so twelve minutes
to go in that game. That's in the N c
double a's least region just under way Bradley of Michigan
State in the two fifteen game in Des Moines. Spartans
(25:47):
up eighteen to fifteen midway through the first half in
Belmont and early eight five lead on Maryland as the
Bruins come in as the eleventh seed after winning on
Tuesday that game just about four minutes in. Later on tonight,
Kentucky's Pete Washington won't play for the Wildcats against Abilene Christian.
Earlier today, Minnesota got the first win of the first round,
topping seventh seed Louisville in the East eighty six to
(26:09):
seventy six. Well, Uls, you had to hang on and
that's the ball game, l S. You have survived and
will advance to the second round of the n ci
A Tournament with a seventy nine seventy four victory in
the East Region over Yale in that three fourteen match up,
the Tampa Bay Rays gave picture Blake Snell a five
year extension as the cy Young Award winner. We'll get
(26:32):
fifty million dollars over the length of that deal. Mariners
beat the As today five ford twelve innings in Tokyo,
But the real story, I'll fielder each Ro. Suzuki announced
his retirement after the game, leaving the game as the
active hit leader with three thousand eighty nine hits during
his time in the big leagues. Take his time in Japan. Echo,
amass no no no no, no, no no, no, no no no.
(26:53):
We can't do that. Well I can, because it's my update.
I understand. But yeah, I know, and I know you're
a Mariners, your Mariners, Marriners, your Brewers guy, and it
just just Seahawks, which is weird because you're from Milwaukee,
but whatever, Wisconsin, but whatever. But we we don't, like,
we don't do that for anybody else. There's nobody else like.
You know, if you compare, you combine all the points
he scored in college with this point she scored in
(27:14):
the NBA. You can bind all the touchdown passing through
for in college. You know, Like I get that it's
professional baseball, but it's you know, it's essentially triple A baseball.
How about you let me do the update so I
can give the the facts of what Etro had and
then afterwards you can say I don't like it when
people do this. I'm just telling people hits throughout his
(27:36):
career with Japan or in Japan and in the big leagues.
How about that. I didn't say that dannything about Pete
Rose and didn't say anything about all time hit leader.
I just said the hits seven during his entire playing career.
Wall Street Journal reporting Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick and Eric reid
(27:58):
Leach received less than ten million dollars in their settlement
with the NFL. Saints are expected to sign tight end
at Jared Cook, we'll be back to the dung Gottlieb
show and his thoughts on each row in ten seconds.
Put first a word from farmers at Farmers Insurance. We
know every windshield collision has a unique sound. Beetle bird, boop,
drone seen it, covered it, dr Farmers Farmers under written.
(28:23):
My Farmers took fire insurance exchanges that affiliates products unavlable
in every state. Alright, So day, let's have that discussion.
Do you do you go? Do you account him as
to his No, not at all? Why did people do that?
I I don't know. The reason that I put it
in is to let people know that each row also
had a somewhat sizeable career in Japan at the time.
(28:47):
So if you would have if you would have played
his entire career in the big leagues, who knows how
many hits he would have gotten. Maybe you would have
passed Pete Rose, maybe not. But the it wasn't like
he came over as a nineteen, you know, twenty year old.
He played a bunch of seasons in Japan before coming
over to the States. So we don't take you know,
our Vita Sabonis is stats and yeah, we don't do that.
(29:11):
But I think when we look at each ro plus
the game was in Tokyo, you know where he got
to call it quits. Mhm um. I love this. I've
apparently just got into an argument with some dude. Uh.
This is this is this is the epic stupidity of Twitter.
So a friend of mine is getting a guy named
Reggie Geary. Reggie played at Arizona, played the NBA. He's
(29:33):
coached all over the world, actually in Japan and um,
and so this is what happened. Was earlier today, I said, Hey,
he's one of my dad. He played for My dad
is in au player, played Monday High school. My dad's
all time favorites. And this guy, uh jesse An Akron
says Um said, I loved him when he played with
(29:56):
Gilbert Arenas and Mike Bibby in college. Now here's the thing, Um,
Reggie Geary finished college in Mike Bibby started college in right,
(30:17):
so there was actually no cross over there. How do
I know that? Because Reggie Geary, like I don't understand
the idea, Like, look, dude, it's okay, Like I make mistakes.
And then Gilbert Rinus is like five years younger than
those guys. Just the idiotcy to people. I'm watching this
Vermont team and this is the other beauty of the tournament.
(30:40):
We talked about backdoor covers, you talked about small sample size.
This is also you watch. I've called Florida State at
the All Airport team, and that's a basketball expression where
when they're walking through an airport, you're like, man, they
look good. But basketball isn't just about being long and
athletic and looking good. It's about making bots and making
(31:00):
plays and there's a little bit of wrestling to it.
Right low man wins. So they're in a dog fight
here with with Vermont and Vermont shooting almost all threes,
whereas Florida State has taken contested Two's if you would
see these teams warm up, warm up, and you'd also
know that h you'd also understand that Vermont doesn't have
(31:24):
names on the back of their jerseys. You go, there's
no way, absolutely positively no way, no way that Vermont
takes down Florida State. But the game isn't decided in
the airport. It ain't decided in layup lines. Is decided,
(31:45):
you know in the ninety four by fifty, looks like
Auburn is gonna hang on and beat in New Mexico State. Um,
they're up forty five, they're up seventy three to sixty
eight with forty five seconds to go. The other thing
that's going good for the n S A determined so
far as for the most part, a little bit higher
scoring games, right like he had Auburn the Mexican say,
(32:08):
as long as you don't have those games in the
thirties and forties where people can say say college basketball's thanks. Um,
even if college basketball isn't as good as it used
to be, it's still good to see the teams get
up and down to score. This Vermont Florida State game four,
That game will end up in the mid sixties to
low seventies music. Who did you have in your final four?
(32:32):
Did you do a bracket? I did do a brackett,
and I had Duke Gonzaga, Villanova, and Kentucky Villanova obviously
not feeling great about the whole Uh Kentucky player being
in a walking boot right Jay Washington, H he's kind
of been their best players. I'm not either. I had
them win national championship, but you know, once those brackets
are sealed, they're not allowed to make you're know, allowed
(32:54):
to um, so not feeling great about that. Um Villanova.
I just kind of felt like, I don't know, Virginia
is that team that I'm probably gonna regret not riding
with because of the fact that I'm like holding the
UNBC thing against them from last year. It's totally reasonable,
and you know, has anybody picked them to win it? Yes?
(33:19):
I think our boss sent out a breakdown of some
people who submitted. Are are talking about, let's see three
people in one of our company pools released or picked Virginia.
Our company pools meaning what like Fox Sports Radio, Fox
Sports Radios nineteen Bracket challenge. Who is it? It doesn't
(33:41):
say it just says here, here's who was picked. Twenty
three people picked Duke, five people picked North Carolina, five
people picked Michigan State, three Virginia, to Kentucky, to Tennessee,
one Gonzaga and one St. Mary's, oh and one Yale Yale.
Michigan State's not winning the national title. And I don't believe.
I don't think they think they're wishing to NaSTA. They've
(34:01):
had an incredible year considering all their their injuries, but
I don't see them in the national title. Alright, fun,
so far, Um, here's what we're gonna do coming up next?
Might actually take a phone call seriously sitting around watching
you know eight seven seven nine nine Fox, Phil Free
will work you in some point today. You might not
be able to get a new car with your tax refund,
(34:21):
but you can't make your car feel like it's brand new.
All it needs a great paint job coming with makeo Today,
coming to Make Today and get you dream paint job
during their tax season sales event. Game time is coming
up next. Um, wait to you what Pat Shermer said
about the Odell Beckham Junior Trade. That's next. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show
weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific that Farmers Insurance.
(34:47):
We know a roof can withstand a lot, one exception
being an airborne car. Seen it covered it. Dr Farmers,
we are Farmers under written my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance
exchange and affiliate products not available in every state. You
(35:07):
might not be able to get a new car with
your tax refund, but you can make your car feel
like it's brand new. All it needs is a great
paint job. Come into Make today and get your dream
paint job during their tax season sales event. So you
remember how I said, it looks like Auburn is gonna
hold on to beat New Mexico State. Wait a minute,
(35:28):
Jared Harper, Auburn Star point guards fouled out fifteen seconds
ago for one reason. I don't know why he's fouling.
Um and after in Mexico State may one out of
two to cut it to two, Auburn may one out
of two, and then New Mexico State cut it to one.
So it's a two point game. Six seconds to go.
Six seconds is a lifetime. You can driple one end
(35:51):
in three and a half four seconds. So New Mexico
State is gonna get the basketball and bounds with a
chance to win the game. Why they didn't just take
a yup, I'm not sure, but he got fouled in
a three point shot, he had a layup. The series
of bad decisions that was amazing. Damn, why are you
(36:12):
watching this? I sure I am, Doug, I sure I am,
and I agree with you. I thought coast to coast Wow,
easy too, and then to be bailed out. I mean,
you still have to make the free throws, at least
two of them. But wow, yeah, I completely one million
percent agree with you. It was It wasn't even close
(36:34):
to being a contested layup. It was a wide open
coast to coast lay up. I mean he beat the
entire team down the floor. Yeah, I Doug, I thought.
The one thing I didn't like about this game for
Auburn was a couple of things. Number One some like city, yes, altitude,
short week and they're running the SEC tournament. Didn't have
(36:57):
number one ls use the top seeded ellis you. Tennessee
was coming off of their their heavyweight fight against Kentucky
the day before, So yeah, I mean, now you gotta
make the free throws, but this would be an all
time collapse if New Mexico State, I don't understand why
you didn't just take the layup. They still have life.
(37:19):
But there's still like one point one, so he's gonna
probably make all three free throws and then the mix
and then and then Auburn is gonna make like a
last second shot or something crazy like that. Oh you
missed the first one. Oh jeez, you needed the first
one to go down. Yeah, now now you get super tight. Yeah,
this is this is great drama. Great dramas, is excellent radio.
(37:43):
It's excellent radio as well. Right, well, we're sitting here
watching a basketball game. Makes the second free throw, so
now this would send it into potentially in overtime. There's
one point seven seconds remaining, which of course, and and
there and they're showing Charles Barkley in studio court. Charles
Barkley the most notable. Yeah, basketball Auburn alone, alum. And
(38:04):
this is this is what march is all about. This
is oh, man, it out and they get the ball back. Unbelievable, unbelievable. Okay, So,
and Bradley's beating Michigan State. By the way, I know
it's still the first half, but that's good for Bradley's brand. Right, well,
(38:25):
we're all very concerned to see Bradley's brand. I mean,
he could not have missed it by any less. And
then uh, Auburn tries to get the rebound and the
ball goes flying out of bounds, so it will be
New Mexico State ball. With one point two left, they
don't have a time out, no, but they're gonna go
(38:45):
review it, and which gives him a time out. This
is the stupid thing about the review. You know this,
This is what I disagree. Do you want to do
a game or do you want to just watch the
end of this game? We can? We can do a game, Yeah,
we can. We'll just have time. This is game time
on the Doug Gottliebs knows you'll do it right and
(39:08):
save on what you need to make stylish updates to
your kitchen and bathroom. Will do it right by two
by offering Delta's Valdosta Kitchen and bath collection a new
lower prices. Do it right for last start with lows.
Damn by what he got The game today is all right? Guests,
who former President Barack Obama has winning it all in
his bracket? Pitch yes, yep, ye, Yep, they are real. Yeah, yep,
(39:32):
it is there, it is. There's Draymond Green beating North
Carolina in uh President Obama's brackets. Guess who Doug thinks
Lebron James will be able to play tomorrow against the
Brooklyn Nets. Lebron James. Yeah, No, it's actually Luke Walton. Sorry, Draymond,
You're wrong about that. But Draymond Green said that. Max
said yeah, but it's actually no Luke Walton saying that
(39:55):
he thinks Lebron will be able to go against Brooklyn tomorrow.
John Ramos doesn't have his glasses so he can't read
the script, maybe like the refs and not saying who
the ball went out of bounds in this Auburn New
Mexico State game. By the way, who you know Dog
will keep you up to date of what happens. I'll
just tell you what's happening in game time. I Guess
who's coming back to the NBA after a three year
stint in China. Yes, that is the correct answer. Yes,
(40:20):
Draymond did get it right that time. Once he can
get his way out of China, who come to the
States play for the Sun's team option for the second
year for the Jimmer for that contract with Phoenix. Guess
who dug the Ravens signed it back up, Lamar Jackson
in Baltimore. You know what, I totally missed this one.
I don't. It just happened too but it's not that surprising.
(40:45):
I don't know. The next has got a three in
the corner and shot an air ball and lost New
Mexico staate it had him in the sweet sixteen. Yeah,
I always take the lap. Yes, yeah, my goodness, I
know who? Who? Who? I have no idea? Colin Kaepernick,
Robert Griffin, the third he'll be back with. Okay, yeah,
(41:08):
so guests who hit their first home under the spring
in Grapefruit League play today? Yeah that is correct. Guests
who has lived in the White House that had a
hole in one yesterday, they've lived in the White House. Uh,
maybe a former president. I'm gonna go Barack Obama. No, No,
(41:29):
George W. Bush for president. George W. Bush hold on
one with a golf ball that is like the has
the soccer ball design on it and was yellow. I
thought that was very interesting. But first a pink lady,
first ever holding one for No, I don't but you
played a lot more golf than I have guess who
(41:50):
on the crew was angry over the lack of ranch
that was available in our wings order. Today I'm gonna
go Ramos. Yes, that is true. In fact made another
employee oh two blocks to get him ranch for his wings.
That is true. Right, This is game time on the
Duck Gotlieb Show. So we've had some madness so far,
(42:17):
as Bruce Pearl somehow survives, I mean just survives, um.
But like looky, you know you see your your your
basketball life flash before your eyes. There's a guy playing
for Michigan State who did not play in the Big
Ten Tournament. I can't actually identify, and I've done four
of their games. This is March. This is March, alright,
continue to keep you updated. Plus, are the Steelers better
(42:40):
off with that Levyan Bell? We discussed next in The
Doug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports
talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows

Heart Radio app search f s R to listen live.
What Up Doug Gotlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? Do Do
(43:01):
Do Do? Do? Do? Do do do? We have had
some craziness already, some madness already. My favorite part of
it is the contradiction of all these guys are like
a player state to be paid because everybody watches because
of the players. You don't know who any of these
(43:22):
guys are, any of them And even listen to my show.
You're probably a sports fan. You're like I am. Name
a player on Auburn's team, New Mexico's team, Bradley's team. Hell,
you can only name one Michigan State player mostly you
can't even name him, Cashius Winston. It's a great name, Cassius.
(43:46):
You know by the way, Michigan State losing by one
to Bradley. Good for the brand, good for the brand.
Can't anybodybody Vermont's team, can't name anybody in Florida State's team,
but their name and likeness is so super valuable. Is it?
Close your eyes name a player that plays for Maryland.
(44:09):
Maybe you get Bruno Fernando. And even when you hear
the name Bruno Fernando, you think he's some He's something
like Italian guy with like he's he's uh. He's got
like a five o'clock shadow. He smokes his cigarette before
he checks in the game. He wears glasses, everywhere ARMANI jeans.
(44:30):
All the ladies love him like, oh Bruno, then though
I love him, that's not at all what he looks like.
And I actually think Bruno Fernando is a monster will
play in the NBA. But that's not even That's not
even the point. The point is you don't actually know
any of these people are like, oh, March madness, make
so much money, and they deserve it because that's why
people watch. No, you watch because of the brackets and
(44:52):
because of the names and then the numbers next to it.
Even Virginia, who I think was the A one for
a period of time earlier this year, even Virginia who
lost last year as the first ever one seed. Can you,
honestly unless you're like, I can, I actually can. It's
my job. I can do it. If you're not a
(45:13):
Virginia guy. Can you name any of their players? Can
you actually my favorite name um of the tournaments, Jack Salt,
Jack Salt stars in NCAA tournament Rampage Jack Salt. So
please stop with the name and likeness, deal your root
(45:35):
for the bracket, for the upset, maybe for the first
time ever. Zion Zion is a guy you know because
of YouTube because he's been awesome. Because he's always a Dukie,
we promoters his name and then he'll get paid massively
whenever he decided to leave Duke. You're welcome for explaining
how the how the system actually works and benefits the players.
(45:55):
They're paying. Their parents don't have to pay hundreds of
thousand dollars to get them into schools. They get in
for free and then don't have to pay once they
get there. All right, let's get to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Did you guys hear this Levy on Bell interview with
was the Sports Illustrated? I think, um, yeah, it was
pretty unimpressive. Don't believe me. Take a listen several players,
(46:19):
you know, Antonio Josh Harris also said that some things
in recent weeks about Ben's leadership abilities. What was your
relationship like with him? And was that a factor why
you didn't want to stay in Pittsburgh. I mean that
was part of it. That was part of it. It
wasn't the factor. That was a factor factor your relationship
(46:39):
with and you wanted it to be different in a way. Yes, sure, yes,
sure I like it. Levian Bell has been sitting out
of football for a year and a half, Levan told
us on our show at the super Bowl, not the
super Bowl, but a super Bowl ago. Hey, if they
(47:03):
franchise tag me, I'm not showing up. That's what he
told us. He didn't say anything about anything else. Has
never been any other issue. It's been completely, in totally
about the money. And I guarantee, had he gotten the
money that he thought he should have gotten, that he
would led to believe, uh, either in his own intuition
(47:23):
or by somebody, that he would somehow reset the market.
I would I got to believe that he would have
said he would have just been doing a victory lap.
But now it's about a bunch of other reasons. No,
it's not Listen, it's okay if you do a bad
business deal, just don't make excuses for doing a bad
business deal. You're still getting a ton of money. That
golden diamond chain you're wearing still is ic is nice.
(47:47):
You do own it, you could pay for it. You're
making a ton of money. If it's not the money
you thought you're making, but it's still a ton of money.
But this whole it wasn't a reason, but it was
a reason, right right right, I mean listen. Yeah. He
(48:11):
also went on to say, like the Steelers, they don't
want you to do anything other than play football. Okay,
that's your job. You do realize that's why they're paying you. Yeah,
this is this is like if I have a side
business and it ends up taking away even though I
have a side business and it's not taking away from
(48:33):
my job, do you think my boss is gonna be
all fired up about it? Hey? Sorry, you know, I
wasn't really paying attention to sports this weekend because I
was coaching my kids ballgames. Right, Like, I'm lucky. I
have a cool job. I can record everything. I can
still do my job. I can actually watch March Madness
games on my phone. You know, I can watch anything
(48:54):
I want on my phone. Last night I coached baseball.
Tonight I'm coaching basketball. But I'll be paying attention to
sports the entire time, and then I don't require a
lot of sleep, so I can watch the stuff that
I missed when I get home. But if I was like, man,
so Fox sports radio things cramping my style. They want
me to like, you know, only worry about sports radio.
(49:22):
And don't you sound really dump when you're talking this way? Yeah? So,
just say you boom, does that of mine? That's really
what it? I mean, I don't even know what I
don't Does he have a publicists like that went really well.
I thought that went well. See we blamed it on
(49:42):
Ben Roethlisberger. I mean even the question she was like
Antonio Brown and some running back who no one actually remembers.
Why didn't she ask him, Hey, Antonio, you know the NFL,
it's weird. Most guys come out in the side of
the players. I'm excuse me, Hey leve On, you know
most guys come out inside the players. Your offensive lineman,
(50:03):
guys who blocked for you were very critical of you
and your decisions. Why do you think that was no they?
She said, Well, two other guys, one running back who
played for half of a season with the Steelers, and
one is Antonio Brown, who I mean, look, he basically
(50:23):
went Sherman and burned everything down to the sea. Two
guys have come out and said Ben Roethlisberger bad leader.
And he may be a bad leader, he may not
have a great relationship. He may think or know that
he's above that of other players. But only now Levian
Bell offers it up when it was kind of a
(50:45):
set up quick that sounded like, uh, that sounds like
your own lawyer interviewing you right, examining you. And then
now you're on cross and and lawyer got Leaves stands
up and said, Levy on, it's interesting that only now
been in Rothsberg has become a problem. Had you been
offered the long term deal that you desired initially with
(51:05):
Ben Roethlisberger having a problem, Well, no, but your honor
the defense rest. I mean, it's look, it's okay if
you play sports for money and it's about the money
and you want to do something and you didn't get
as much money, and you can offer some sort of
perspective on it, but not saying anything at all about
(51:31):
Roethlisberger until a running back who no one's ever heard of,
an Antonio Brown, who criticized everybody in a way out
of town. Yeah, that that makes it feel like it's
even more about the money, and you're even more bitter
that you didn't get the money. Not great, Not great.
Rod Woods enjoys the show up coming next. He's a
(51:53):
Hall of Famer in the NFL. Analyst. I'm gonna ask him.
I got a couple of things I want to ask
him about Justin Houston, who's just signed with the Indian
aplas Colts. I want to ask him about Levy on
Bell's comments. Of course, he's been a part of that
Pittsburgh Steeler. He's Pittsburgh Steeler lore. He's coaching the National
Football League. And I'll ask him about a diminutive quarterback.
(52:15):
Does he believe the game has changed so much that
Cala Murray, all five ft ten of him, can be
a top level quarterback in spite of his size. I'll
ask Rod Woodson he joins us upcoming next, But first,

(53:46):
to ask you about Justin Houston in a moment he
just signed with the Indianapolis Colts and figure out what
he has left in the tank. But you know a
lot of people talk about your old team Steelers and
their decision to move on from Antonio Brown. Now Levy
on Bell kind of opted in chorus talking about the
leadership relationship with Ben Roethlisberger. What do you think the
Steelers will look like this upcoming season without that talented tandem.
(54:11):
Well it, Doug, They're definitely gonna look different. Man. You know,
when you when you lose a player like a B
who you know arguably is the best receiver in the
National Football League, and he's been that way over the
last five years. Um, you know, it's tough. It's tough
to replace that. And then Levy on Bell, how how
dynamic he was as a running back on the ground
(54:35):
and in the air as a receiver. You know, you
don't find those type of players at often. UM, So
they will look different, UM, but I still expect them
to be in the hunt of things in the NFC North. Um.
You know, Ben has been the leader. It's unfortunate that
Ben couldn't get along with a B and kind of
threw some of his players under the bus. Um for
(54:57):
whatever it is it happened. Um, it's all over, Saul
said and done. Everybody moved on their different directions. I
think Mike Tommins a good coach. I think he'll get
them refocused in on being singly focused with the eyes
on the big picture throughout the season. So I think
he'll get that accomplished. Um, But they won't be said
the same dynamic offense that they had in the previous years,
(55:19):
especially when Levian Bell was playing with a d along
with Ben Um. That was a trio that that you
enjoyed watching on Sundays. What do you think of what
do you think of Levy on Bell's comments, which are
in some ways in course in some ways it was
kind of a It was a question which you know,
I I you know, take listen he was he was
(55:42):
asked about Ben Roethlisberger and he had this to say,
several players, you know, Antonio. Josh Harris also said that
some things in recent weeks about Ben's leadership abilities. What
was your relationship like with him? And was that a
factor why you didn't want to stay in Pittsburgh. I
mean that was part of it. That was part of
it that it wasn't the factor that was a factory
(56:06):
factor your relationship with and you wanted it to be
different in a way. Yes. Uh do you do you
believe that that Ben has to change? Yeah? I think
I don't think he will. I think it is what
it is. I think they've made their decision on who
they're going to listen to. Uh a little. It seems
like Ben is going to be the unspoken or the
(56:28):
spoken leader in the locker room. UM. You know, I
I think it's hard when you only have one leader. UM.
I know some other things that happened where Um. You know,
Levin also said that, you know, they didn't treat us
like human beings, talking about the I guess he was
talking about the Students organization. I would absolutely argue against that.
(56:49):
I think the Rooney family and if anybody spoke to
anybody about the Rooney family, UM, they that's the opposite
of how they treat people. UM. But you know, it's
unfortunate at that Levian felt that way about Ben. It's
unfortunate that a grown man has to want to get
along with all his players in the locker room, which
(57:10):
is not normal. Um for him to be in that
one position. Um. You know, I if Levian was going
to win, and he was dead set on wanting to
win a Super Bowl, I don't know if he would
have picked the Jets, even though I think the Jets
did a great job so far in free agency. UM,
you know what they've been the last several years, comparativele
what the feelers have been other other teams who maybe
(57:32):
have been suiting for his services. Uh. Talking about Levian
Bell choosing you know, the Jets over the other. Um.
You know, I think it's not about uh rings. I
think it's about money. Yeah, but that's that's the thing though.
But you're you're you're telling me like, look, you played
for the organization. The Rooneys don't treat you like anything
other than a man, right, I mean that right, that's
(57:54):
that's not your experience. So now he's now he's saying
the way they don't treat me, they don't treat us
like a man. And he's pointing all these fingers, like, no,
Levy on, Look, you didn't want you didn't think the
contract extension was big enough. You were willing to sit
out a year to prove your point. You end up
getting less money than was offered to you reportedly by
the Steelers. You still got plenty of money, you got
(58:15):
a new job, but you took the highest offer because
it was about the money. I just I feel like
he's making the rest of the stuff up. And it's
especially if if your experience as a Steeler it goes
counter to what he's saying, Like all of a sudden,
now the Rooney Street people differently. I I think I
think if you talked to the vast majority of players
who played in Pittsburgh under the Rooney family. Um, it
(58:37):
would be opposite of what Lebian said. Now listen, I'll
say this about Lebian. I don't have a problem with
anybody want to make money. I don't. I don't know.
I held out three times with the with the Steelers,
myself and the time friend that I was there. But
I still love the Black and Gold. I still love
the Rooney's. I still love that city and what they
did for me. But you know, you decided that they
(58:59):
didn't give you the right amount of money, just like
I did when I left in n and I went
to San Francisco. So you make those decisions and then
you let everything else go to bed. I don't think
you have to make all the other stuff up or
even bring it to light. Um. You know, I just
think you know every cross, every thought that goes across
your mind. You know, I'm not for all the these
(59:21):
athletes today and all the sports airing their feelings about
their posing players or players in their locker room on
a consistent basis. Still got the show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Let me get to with the news story
of to day Justin Houston, who had a couple of
years ago, had a couple of amazing seasons. Of course,
Kansas City moved on from him. This is this is
(59:42):
the move so far that Indie has made. How much
do you think he has left in the tank. I
think Justin still can play. Um. You know, I think
one thing that you have to look at when you
look at the Colts is like, what is he also
going to bring into the locker room? You know, what
is he what type what type of leadership that he
brings for this young football team. You know, I would
like to see them bring back Mike Mitchell, who I
(01:00:04):
thought played well for him when he got signed a
couple of weeks into the season, one of the safeties
they had there. I'd like to see him bring back him.
But I think that you know, Justin Houston, I think
when you just look at his talent a loan, as
players get older, they're gonna slow down, They're not gonna
be and they're gonna be compared to their younger cells,
which is rightfully, I guess you can you can say
(01:00:24):
that's okay, But I think he brings leadership into the
locker room and he brings the leadership on the practice field.
That's something that you don't have when you have a
young team. So I think bringing that experience into the fold,
I think it's great for the colts. Um, you know,
and I would hope that he can play some really
good football for him because I know he's going to
(01:00:46):
bring leadership in the locker room and on the practice
feld and in the meeting rooms. Rod wooson joining us
in the Doug Out Libs show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Kyler Murray is all of five ft ten. He's a
ridiculous athlete. He's obviously shown to make plays in and
out of the pocket. Um. Has the game evolved enough
(01:01:06):
where he can be successful long term in the National
Football League? That's a great question. Um. You know, watching
him play, Um, he is a tremendous athlete. But one
thing was told to me by a pretty good coach
named Chuck Noles, Like, it's not about being athletic. Everybody's athletic.
(01:01:27):
That's why you play in the Fashional Football League. The
best of the best of the best play in the
National Football League. So you're not going to be faster
than everybody else like you were in college. You know,
the biggest thing that's going to be if he can remember.
It's really two to one mental to physical. So if
he has that recall and if he has the accuracy,
if he can decide for the defenses, then yes, if
(01:01:49):
he can move in the pocket, if he can find
those small windows, he can be a successful player in
the national footballa irrelevant other size, and I think Doug
Fruty showed that that can happen. Um. Now, if you can't,
he's going to struggle and these fast players, these big players,
they're gonna get to him. So if he if he's
not playing up to his par mentally more than physical,
(01:02:10):
then he won't survive in a national football Doug gottlip
Show here on Fox Support Tradio. That's that's the voice
of Rod Woodson. Uh. And then you have the curious
case of Josh Rosen, who's been there for all of
nine months. Uh. They made a coordinator change mid season.
His head coach lasted all of one year. And I
don't know if Arizona is gonna take Kyler Murray number
(01:02:32):
one overall. But if they're not, and they're happy with
Josh Rosen, why are they interviewing Kyler Murray? Um? Just
because he can doesn't mean you should, right. UM. Well,
I think you do your due diligence, you know. UM,
as a coach, I do get it. Uh. You know,
if I never got into the coaching business, which I
was the last three years and four total years with
(01:02:53):
the Raiders, I would have probably had that same idea.
But I guess you do you do you do, you
do diligence just for the fact that you want to
make sure you turn, turn and turn every stone to
make sure that you're getting the right player, um or
the right idea behind the player. UM. You know. Now
you know, Josh Rosen has done a tremendous job. I
(01:03:15):
thought he played extremely well. I thought it was kind
of you know, what they did to the head coach,
um was was a bad thing. UM, But you know
they they moved on from that. Josh Rosen played well
for him. You got to think about his running back.
This came back last year when he was healthy, they
were playing well. One of his top receivers got hurt
in the middle of the season. Um, one of the
(01:03:36):
one of the best receivers ever playing in the National
Football League. Probably play one more year and he'll be done.
So you know, I think he did a tremendous job
for what he had going for him. Off of the line.
That wasn't that good. Um, you know so. But I
do understand coaches doing new the diligence talking to players,
all players who they think and might be fit into
their system. Um. I don't have a problem with that. Um. Now,
(01:03:59):
do I think they should nick another quarterback with the
number one overall? Pick? I would say, I don't think so. Personally.
I think they have a lot more holes to field
than the quarterback position. I don't think Josh Rosen is
the worst player on their football team that they should
replace with the number one overall pick I would go
in a different direction. But you know that that coaching
staff is gonna We're gonna see what's gonna happen the
(01:04:19):
next couple of years with this coaching staff. Doug got
the show here on Fox Sports Tradio. You were previously
on the Raiders coaching staff. Um, they seem to have
a plan to gut the thing and start over, and
then all of a sudden, they go after Antonio Brown,
pay a bunch of money for Trent Brown. Do you
like what the Raider's new plan? Well, I'll tell you
what I like. I like a b uh put let
(01:04:40):
me put it this way. I like the a b
who's bowling out and doing this thing without throwing everybody
under bus. But I don't think he's gonna He's not
gonna throw Derek carrunt the bus, because Derek car is
a really good person. He's a great human being. I
like what they've done so far in off season. I
mean Antonio Brown, you know, Trent Brown. You know you
(01:05:02):
got perfect or perfect coming in, you know, and you
know there's some question marks, but you gotta understand the
track record where they got from. Paul Gunther coming from Cincinnati,
so system, he just can't he can't run anymore at all.
He can't run anymore. But he's gonna bring a little
dog into the locker room and private a little craziness
since the locker room, which is okay at times. Right,
(01:05:22):
You've got Joiner who's you know, he's he's a I
think he's a solid safety in the league. You know,
you got lost in who's I think as the South
is okay corner. You got your other receivers. You got Nelson,
who got the speak guy, you got you got Williams,
who's a tall receiver. So you've got some players, but
I like what they've done. The biggest thing for them
isn't that, because you don't win normally in the National
(01:05:45):
Football League through fredency, you'd have to win in the draft.
And it's gonna really come to fruition, is that in
this draft pick or this draft class, if they can
get their number one right, they gotta They got a
good chance to turn the tide around for are the
open Raiders. And if they can do that, then John
Gruten did a smart day, great stuff man. Really appreciate

In baseball, Fox Sports in center Ken Rosenthal saying the

was watching these games. You get the Goldschmidt extension. Yeah,
I just told you. I'm sorry. I'm like, you know,
like you can it's this is like what the four
TVs do? Like I literally heard nothing. How much is it?
(01:08:57):
It's at least a hundred and ten million dollars scording
to Ken Rosenthal three years or four five, that's what
I said. Um, it's all good. But now he and
he's what thirty one or Um, that's that's interesting interesting amount?
Um hm, you know, look, I THOMASO just got into
(01:09:21):
it with Aaron Henry, one of his players. How does
it work in volleyball? Ryan? Ryan Music played volleyball collegiately
as well. Um, like, what's the level of coaching and volleyball?
During a game? They take give, they take guys as well,
not necessarily lineup wise, but usually just strategy wise. You're
(01:09:43):
calling plays, right, yeah, I mean or you're trying to
call out what the other teams doing making adjustments things
like that, but usually most you're not making a lot
of substitutions. Um, so it's more just about like trying
to address what your offense is doing and obviously adjusting
to what their offense is doing. Okay, all right then,
(01:10:09):
Um Now does this type of yelling and screaming take
place in volleyball? Yeah, definitely. Are you allowed to yell
back at your coach? Usually not? Know? Yeah, look the
the thing that you know, we're will folk. I'm sure
people on social media be like, you can't talk to
players like you don't know. As being said, here's what
(01:10:29):
I see. My eyes are different. I see Aaron Henry,
a freshman, yelling back and forth with a Hall of
Fame coach and not coming out of the game. And
and part of it is I know how that staff operates.
Those guys like it. Dude, stay show us, show us
you've got some guts. Man, you can talk back to
the old man. They like that. Now the assistance are
(01:10:53):
sitting there going like that was kind of cool. See him,
you got into him, stood up for himself. Let's see
how he plays. This is all like part of the deal,
all part of the deal, didn't put his hands on him.
I'm get eating didn't look like a dog custom whatever
even did. Curse is not not the end of the world.
(01:11:14):
Hers words do happen, But I just I think it's
fascinating to me. On on how like we always try
and compare sports to the regular workplace, right, we always do, like, well,
my place of work. Well guess what, buddy, this ain't
your place of work. This is a basketball game with
(01:11:34):
a sixty year old man and an eighteen year old
kid nationally televised audience that they screw up. Everybody goes
home and their season is over, and there's twenty people
in the arena and a couple million people watching nationwide.
And so yeah, you might say, it's like, what is
it from pulp fiction which buyers only seen like five
(01:11:58):
minutes of If you need anything I can refer to Yeah, yeah,
so please pretty please with sugar on top. Just clean
the car, right, like just get it done. Yes, Ramos,
when you play for a Tommyzo or any coach played
for Nettie Sutton or yes, aren't you kind of at
this point of the season kind of and that should
(01:12:18):
be expected, like you should know your coach if hes
Maybe we're seated for the first time, but I'm sure
he's outed him plenty of times in the course of
the season. That's something you do those players, right, correct, correct?
I mean, but you know, I'm just telling you. They
the Mission State guys like that. They like when guys
they like to be out at Okay, no, no, no, no,
not the players like like the coaches, they'll sit there
(01:12:40):
and go like they like when a player like you
stand up for yourself. You know, if you're just gonna
take it and just cower away, that means you're gonna
cower away from any sort of other talk or pressure.
They want you to stand up for yourself. So, um,
why I think this is so? Butler, assuming up Bradley
(01:13:02):
is only down three as Michigan State and these teams
are on fumes. This is why you shouldn't. They shouldn't
be playing just like Auburn their fifth game in seven days.
This is their fourth game in seven days. Like you're
running your your gas tanks, just running low your Michigan State.
You got back to campus late Sunday, you found out
who you're playing before you left. You know, Monday, you
(01:13:25):
have the day off Tuesday, you might have a little
workout and then you get on a plane. Wednesday you're
doing media and you have practice, and Thursday you're playing
a game. Like that's a lot. When you're in college,
you're not You're not used to play in that many
games at this level of intensity. Remember the Big ten
tournament that was incredibly intense, incredibly intense. Have you guys
(01:13:45):
been paying attention to the thunder? They lost last night?
They've now lost four in a row, their four and ten,
their last four team games are in eighth place in
the West, Like, when did this happen? It's so interesting?
We went for I'm talking about the Lakers yesterday? Is
cherobyl do Like somebody's like, havey you guys have seen
the thunder? Like, no, why what's going on there? Um?
(01:14:13):
And I think they're still trying to figure some things out.
You know, Westbrooks missed a game or two, but man,
what what happened to the thunder? And the only thing
you can point to is, I know Paul George has
had the better year and has been a better player
this year, but you are who your best player is
(01:14:34):
on your best players wildly inconsistent. Your team's gonna be
wildly and consistent. That's who they are. Maryland just tied
the game with eighteen fifty six to go. Bruno Fernando,
who I accurately described as a suave Italian guy with
(01:14:56):
a mustache and if I have a clock shadow smoking
a cigarette, looks nothing like Bruno Fernando. Bruno Fernando is
like it looks like a Greek god. Right, his muscles
have muscles? No, I got a chance to put Maryland
up a point? Uh, Michigan State still in a war

Michigan State now down one, Northeastern only down to forty
to go in the first half though, whereas Michigan State
(01:16:22):

three six fifty two to go in that game, So
all close games shouldn't be a surprised. In the first

(01:16:42):
Don't we call it? And Now? This was early today
Joel Embiide after last night's win over the Celtics. All,
I'm probably got the worm set of Front and Club.
I'm got the ball I've been hearing about. These guys
can't call me better than anybody. Show guy. I'm I'm
(01:17:08):
the most unstoppable player in the mirror. This was Stephen
Jackson on First Things First, talking about embad statement. He's
also showing it on both fans Cola's game when they
played Milwaukee Greef. We had a tough first half because
they had em beat on him. Last night, he makes
the big block on Kyrie he and he was dominant
(01:17:30):
the whole game on offense. So he's definitely the most
dominant player on both on both ends of the court
right now. And he's showing it on offense and some
of the moves he's making as a big man, putting
the ball on the floor, crossing over, spending, getting off
and then he cut the ball. Yes, you can't teach that.
He's coming into his own. He should feel like he's
the most dominant player in the leage because he's playing
(01:17:51):
like you know, it's interesting. I remember the first time
I saw Joe and b play. Bill self said that
guy's gonna be a Hall of famer. Um, that guy's
gonna be a Hall of Famer. And you know, it's
fastint because when he knew it second, he knew just
the way in which he moved, and the time off
though his body wasn't right, allowed him to develop a
(01:18:12):
lot of his skill. You know, the only thing about
Joel embiide is Um is the more he talks about
it instead of doing it right, Like he's a great
talent and he can play at both ends and he
can shoot the basketball. Last year in the in the playoffs,
he didn't look like a guy who really understood how
to play differently at the end of big games. Um
(01:18:36):
On the other hand, while he starts to figure that
stuff out when to do what and how to play
when the games really matter, the interesting party is going
to be does he end up being at what I
thought was the better player, the better prospect, or the
the more impactful guy, the more impactful guy of the
(01:18:58):
two between him Ian ben'ce Emmans and I think the
answer is yes, it's because he can shoot, and then
his impact of the defensive ent never never underestimated how
how important that is, right, can you if you're a
big guy, can you switch? Can you guard? Can you
guard guards on switches? You know? Can you defend the rim?
(01:19:19):
And he had that huge block last night on Kyrie Irving? Alright,
so now it's getting super tight with Michigan State in Bradley. Yes, rhyme.
This is just sort of a general observation. I don't
even know how accurate it. Maybe it feels like college
basketball coaches like the top guys get a much longer
(01:19:41):
shelf life than like college football coaches, like if because
I'm thinking, okay, if Michigan State loses this game, none
of us really think like Tom is Os on the
hot seat, right. He just won the Big Ten, the
Big Ten Tournament championship, right. But that's so that's what
my question is is. I'm not saying he should be
on the hot seat, but it seems like other, like
college football coaches, if you're not competing with Nick Saban,
(01:20:03):
if you're not competing with Urban Meyer, if you're not
one of those top teams, it seems like they're ready
to push you out the door as soon as they can.
Whereas college basketball, you have Beeheim, you have Iszoh, you
have coach k you have Roy Williams, you have all
these coaches who have been You have Bill self at Kansas.
You have these coaches who haven't necessarily all been winning
national titles year after year, but they are all like
(01:20:25):
all of us are just like, oh no, they won't
even be touched. I can improve. Your comment really doesn't
make sense, Okay, you want me to sure? Okay, So
if you won the Big Twelve every year in football
for fifteen straight years, you'd be competing for a national championship. Correct, Yeah,
most years, Right, you either go to a Great Ball
(01:20:45):
Game or you go to National Champiship game. If you
lost in the Great Bowl Game or you lost in
the National Championship game, would you lose your job if
you got there, if you won your league fifteen years
in a row, fourteen years in a row. No, of course, right,
that's what Bill Sell done. So let's eliminate itself. Let's
also remember that that I mean, if you want to,
(01:21:06):
if you want to like talk about longevity and success. Um,
I mean look at look at Mark D'Antonio at at
Michigan State. He's had a couple of down seasons and
he hasn't played for competed in the National Championship yet.
I actually think, you know, in the Big Ten. In
Big Ten, you it's more of a developmental league. It's
a coaches league. Guys are they're less prone to one
(01:21:27):
and dunns or in college football guys going out with
the exception maybe Ohio State. Like all the names you mentioned,
like what you're looking at the last game and what
happens in the n C termined as the defining part
of their season. We don't do that in football. We don't.
We absolutely do not. We don't do well. You lost.
(01:21:49):
Like I've said this about Michigan, even though Michigan hasn't
been Ohio State yet with Jim Harball, the fact is
that program is clearly better and he's not going anywhere,
and they're very happy with him, and he's relatively happy
with them, whatever form of happiness he has. So I mean, like, look,
just consider Michigan State, whether you want to call them
(01:22:09):
like Notre Dame or like Michigan State Football whatever, Like
if they lose this game, would it be disappointing? Yeah?
Would they have a disappointing Sea's Like, No, they just
want the Big Ten, the Big Ten tournament after losing
their two lottery picks off their team and losing a
starter for the year to injury early on the season.
So I don't think that they get I mean, those
guys that get a longer leash have earned the right
(01:22:31):
to have a longer leash, and the same would happen
in football. Alright, several games coming down to the wire.
Eric Weddow of the Rams is going to join us. Uh.

What Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Michigan State
is retaking the lead and now they have the basketball
with four forty nine to go. Kansas continues to lead
against Northeastern Murray State early on early on ten eight,
make that ten ten against against Marquette and Belmont leading
(01:23:59):
Maryland eight in that game, so Michigan State only up
a point. Bradley with the basketball, that's an all out war.
And I we'll keep you updated on all the games

Jeez u. My youngest has got home from running errands
with my wife, so I'm on, she's almost five. I'm
about to pick up my other three twenty minutes or so,
(01:24:41):
and it's basically daddy daytad the rest afternoon with sports

but not much watching until tonight. Uh, Eric Eric Wettle
all American dad, one time, one time retiree. Weren't you?
Weren't you done? Like, weren't you? We were like, oh,
he's done, okay, well he's done, all right? Cool is
(01:25:01):
a good run, And then like five minutes later you're like, no, no, no, no,
I'm in l A ram Were you in fact retired? No?
I was never tired, But you know, you never know
the interest level, uh of what you're gonna get when
you're a free agent. I mean I was prepared to
(01:25:21):
be released that you never really uh fully grasped it
when it happens. Thirty four years old and it's the
first time I've been cut from a team, so it's
it's pretty good odds. I lasted a long time, but
you know, you never know the interests. And then when
you sit down and think about it, the situation my
family and being back in San Diego for good and
(01:25:44):
potentially going to another team, you know, out of the state.
There were a lot of things that were on my
mind where I'm in a different situation. And I was
three four years ago when I found in Baltimore eight
years ago with two kids, so uh, it definitely crossed
my mind. But when the teams were wanted me to
(01:26:06):
come out and sign me, then it's uh changed your
mindset really quick quickly, and luckily enough, the Rams said
mutual interests and they were the top team that I
wanted to sign to if if I continue to play,
and then that's what a minute I would can see
you an i E kid, right, You're an inn Empire kid.
Is that or right, So yeah, yeah, man, I I
(01:26:29):
didn't know young people. I thought everybody's used to grow up,
grow a bunch of old people, aren't in all old
people in chio Cucamonga. Um no, it's it's it's up
and coming. Man. A lot of good football players come
out of Rancho and the Inland Empire for sure. Okay, so,
um so you were only you were only on the
market for like five minutes like I was actually on
(01:26:50):
I was texting with the gm AT on the first
day of free agency, and I was like, man, I
guess Eric Well is not retired. He's like, what are
you talking about it? Like he just signed with the Rams,
Like okay, that was really really fast. How much of
it was? How much you know, how much it was location,
how much of it was? Why it happens because you
didn't really leverage it. You didn't go like, all right,
I got this, let me go talk to some other teams.
(01:27:10):
Why the speed of that transaction? Well, I mean the
way the way it all transpired. I was initially going
to go to a couple of different stops before l A.
I was gonna trip to other teams in the Midwest
and the East, coast and then on the way back
stop in l A at my last stop, and things
changed within an hour of l A really getting in
(01:27:34):
into the mix as much as some other teams with
the interest level and oneted me and expressing that and
they wanted me to be the first first trip. And
once they showed that they were serious about wanting me,
that changed the dynamic of where I want to end
up and in the fit and the meeting and whatnot.
(01:27:54):
So when I tripped out there and had amazing visit
with coach McVeigh, and I knew a lot of the
coaches from my pass in San Diego in the system,
so it was just more or less figuring out the fit,
in the dynamic of me adding to this team and
you know, making making the contract work. Uh. I could
(01:28:15):
have potentially have made a lot more, but at this
stage of my career it's not so much about the money.
It's about being fair and fair what's you're worth. But
the team, the organization and the fit, the dynamic of
all those things really outweighs going and playing in another
state and not seeing my family for six months definite,
(01:28:35):
So is the family gonna sta hang in San Diego?
Are they. Are you gonna get it? You're gonna get
a spot up because thousand oaks for people who aren't
in southern California. Yes, yes, Like you may look at
the two dots like, okay, you could make that work.
You can't because it's not like you're not like you're
a charger where you would You know, Philip still lives
in San Diego and drives up. He's got the mobile QB.
You're literally on the other side of l A, which
(01:28:55):
might as will be the other side of Earth. So
what's what's the what's the plan? I mean, sit down
on the kids. I mean, we're gonna have four kids
in elementary, so we're we're d goes home from now on.
So I'll get a spot next to the facility and
I'll just I'll be up there and him on the
home games and potentially maybe come back after games and
(01:29:18):
spend spend Monday and Tuesday with them, depending on you know,
talking to coach and whatnot. But that's That'll be that.
And it worked out good because at least, you know,
I'm I'm a few hours away. Something happened, I could
be at home in an instant and being able to
see a week where, on the other hand, if I
ended up in a lot of other places, I would
very rare to see him. So that's definitely a huge
(01:29:41):
plus for us in the family. The most important question
with Daddy daycare and homework this weekend is how's your
new math skills? Because I gotta tell you my son,
My son just turned ten, he's in fourth and he's
you know, we're doing like division. It's like, oh, you
do it like It's like, I've never done it like
that before. That's what he was telling me. You know.
It's like, well, you don't do it like that? Like, no,
(01:30:01):
how'd you do masks? By far the worst? Like why
change something that has worked for all eternity of life? Uh?
Doesn't make sense to me. And it's definitely a fight
of of your nine ten eleven year old to explain
you how to do math with you are the parent
and should be the opposite. So it's definitely trial and
(01:30:24):
there for sure being taught by a ten year old
of how to do math when you obviously know how
to do it. Eric Wednell join us in the dug
out the show did you know part of the deal?
You guys are gonna play an exhibition game, preseason game Hawaii. No,
how about that. That's that's I'm pretty hyped about that.
I've been the why a few times, a couple of
probable there, and it's amazing. We've we've loved, loved the people,
(01:30:46):
love the the state and and how welcoming there are.
So I think it's gonna be awesome, uh to get
the interest up in in Hawaii and be around the community.
It's uh, I'm looking forward to it. It's it's a
great up tunity for us. And to play against Cowboys
is uh. The interest of them across the country is
always second. And then every lot of a lot of
(01:31:08):
fans are everybody raised about your football like you, and
they're like, look Eric Weddle, He'll be able to get
him lined up, get him in the right spot, like
he's a savant back there. But the questions at your
age are going to be about your ability to tackle,
your ability to run. How do you manage your body
at this point in your career. I've, you know, over
the last few seasons, I've really homed in on on
(01:31:30):
what I need to to be playing at a high
level and just stay healthy. And last few years I
haven't missed a game, very rarely missing snaps at all,
so that that stuff is is going to take care
of itself, you know, thirty four, thirty five. You know,
guys are playing a lot longer nowadays because the game
has changed. It's not such a physical, physical game than
(01:31:52):
it was when I first got in the league. And
two guys and seven it's the game's changed. It's more
about speed, it's more about covering, tackling, you know, free
you know opens times those bone crushing here say wipe
you out for the next week or two. So I'm
excited for the challenge. I'm decided to go earn the
respect of my teammates and coaches and and on that
starting spot and lead and take this team as far
(01:32:14):
as we can go. Erica, congrats on coming back home
to so Cal getting a new deal. Uh. Even even
if you might have you might have wondered whether or
not you'd have value in the league. The the answer
is an obvious yes from from the l a rams. Uh.
Get back to that and get back to working on
new math before the rest of the kiddos get home,
because the last thing you want to do is have
your kid go to school. And get their homework wrong
(01:32:35):
and think you're the reason that they got their homework wrong.
If I've already been blamed for it, So it's all right.
I got big shoulders. I've been blamed for a lot
of losses in my career, So put it on me.
I can. I can handle it. Fair fair enough, great stuff.
Thanks for joining us, Eric, any time. Eric Weddell joining
us in the doug Otlip Show on Fox Sport Trade.
It looks like, uh, looks like with one more stop,
(01:32:59):
of course, that show goes in. I was gonna say,
Michigan State's gonna survive at sixty five to sixty one
to go. I ask you a question, Ryan, you're pretty
good gage here of this, of this, what's going on? Alright? So,
so Kentucky fans apparently are mad at me. I have
seeing that. I'm noticing that on Twitter, and I'm not
sure why there's like so much, because well, Kentucky fans
(01:33:23):
are the most sensitive. They're like, we're so awesome. If
you agree with us, you're awesome, and if you don't,
you suck. So here's the tweet. Okay, North Carolina, UH
had the best team it should have been had. But
I was. I think it was talk to text had
had the best team in two thousand and twelve, in
my opinion, lost Kendall. Marshall was a point guard to
(01:33:45):
a borderline dirty play by Craton. Never got another shot
at Kentucky. They lost. Kentucky team won the national title.
They lost by one point at ropp Arena in like December.
Never got another shot at Kentucky the final four. If PJ.
Washington is out for UK. It took seven years for
the Cosmos to balance out. Like look, it's it's just
a luck thing, you know, right, it's pointing out the
(01:34:06):
way the Brackett sometimes when you get injuries and don't
get injuries. And I remember watching that year watching the
n c A term. That was the last year before
I worked for CBS, and I was thinking, like nobody
mentioned that the three best teams for Syracuse and North
Carolina and Kentucky and Syracuse lost their center before the
tournament and North fab Melos suspended and North Carolina is
(01:34:28):
their point guard in the second game of the tournament.
So and and if you remember that Kentucky team that
was led by Anthony Davis, their weakness was shooting. They
were like the last Duke, they were a terrible three
point shooting team when they never played the best zone
zone and college basketball, and they never played the other
team with four first round picks, which was North Carolina.
(01:34:51):
So I just don't like you're you're cheering, You're you're
rooting for for PJ. Washington's injury. Like, hey, dummy, I
actually picked Kentucky to win. That the best part about it.
And like, I see, it's it's typical Twitter. I mean,
that's really just what it is, is how people interpret
things on Twitter. Is um So Matt Jones, he does
Kentucky Sports Radio, he says, a kind of a crappy
(01:35:15):
thing to say, your opinion of is incorrect and silly,
but you're entitled to that, suggesting PJ getting hurt as
karma is beneath you. I don't believe I suggested karma
do right exactly. And that's the whole point. I do
know the the idea. I know what the karma is
and some of the cosmos are. The idea is luck, right,
It's luck that the year that U n C gets
(01:35:35):
matched up in the same bracket as Kentucky, who, in
your opinion, is the best team in the tournament since
you pick them to win it all, and you're going, wow,
U n C is really catching a break if PJ.
Washington can't play, And somehow that's turned into you are
forever a Kentucky hater. Perfect recap Michigan State trying to
(01:35:55):
hold on. Wait do you hear what's happening with Belmont
and Maryland and uh uh Marquette trailing Murray State early on? Well, uh,
the the guy who claims that Rashan Phillips was this
twenty years ago, twenty years aget this true story. I'll
tell the story. Twenty years ago, his team pulled off
(01:36:16):
a big upset over U C l A. I'll tell
him my backstory into that upset because I was at
the same site. Get his memory. Plus, he's a guy
who was one of the first to identify John Morant
as a potential lottery pick point guard for Murray State.
Who is They're currently leading Marquette twenty to fifteen. We'll
get to Rashant Phillips. He joins us just around the corner.

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. I know he's uh,
he's watching this game because Uh, he's got his own
sports show which is available online. He's Rochelle Phillips. He
joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio.
Uh Rashad John Morant. Uh, it's very early on this game.
(01:38:09):
You're a guy who you're on the John Morant bend
wagon before anybody else. How's he playing? He's playing fantastic.
He's making everybody around him better. And Marquette is struggling
trying to guard him on the ball screen and that's
allowing opportunities so he can get in the lane and
find shooters like Kevin Brown. Uh. What is it that
you liked about him that that you saw before everybody
(01:38:32):
else saw it? Well, he he had so much He
had a dynamic way about approaching the game. And in
college basketball, we rarely see guys Doug that can actually score,
rebound and assist at the same time. And I noticed
that he had that trade master as a freshman, he
(01:38:52):
was had the ability to score rebound, assists and he
and he was a tremendous athlete. So that just kind
of caught my eye early on RUSHO. Phillips is is
our guest. Um. Uh So twenty years ago he was
the point guard at Detroit and in Indianapolis, they upset
U c l A. I know because we were also
(01:39:15):
in Indianapolis. We beat Syracuse and then we lost to
Auburn in a close game. Um, did you do you
guys hear the rumor like the night before the game
that the U c l A guys were at the club? No, no,
I was, I heard none of that. Yeah, we I remember.
We got up the next day they're like, Yo, we
heard the U c l A guys were out till
like two three in the morning. They're gonna everybody's like
(01:39:35):
the Detroit they got, they got a point guard. They're
gonna beat them. They're gonna get him, and I know Itiapolis.
That was actually that was actually my response. That was
That was actually my response. Yeah, that was that was
actually my response. What do you remember about that upset?
(01:39:57):
What was the it was? You know, we came out
when we watched U c l A on tape. Uh,
it was almost like watching an All star team, like
an All Star game. Baron Davis was he was tremendous.
He can he can run, he can get up and down,
he can he can leap, and but he couldn't he couldn't.
He couldn't run that year. That was we played him
earlier that year. That was the year he's coming off
(01:40:18):
of the a c L. And he wasn't he was
sort of back, but he wasn't told about. But they
had Yeah, they had some, they had some guys, Doug
and again, Baron Davis was still athletic as any point
guard that you would come across in college basketball at
that particular time. But he couldn't guard you that day. No,
(01:40:45):
that day. No. But you know what, I had a
difficult time guarding him as well because he was so powerful.
He was so strong, and he was so quick off
the dribble and explosive. So you know, I just think
my teammates were helping because he was a low uh shot.
Phillips scored nine points. That's why he's gotten Sports nineteen
(01:41:05):
is his own show. Of course, she's a college basketball guru.
You can fall him on Twitter at RP three natural
um Belmont is given. Now Maryland's up to uh. But
you've seen Delan Delon Winner before, haven't you, Yes, yes, yes,
Windler is tremendous. I studied a lot of tape on
him in the summer and you know what, Doug, He
(01:41:27):
reminds me a lot of Joe Ingles from Utah. He
has like that doesn't pass the eye test, but he's
so clever left handed, he can hit shots. He's a
great teammates. So I think there's a place for him
in the NBA. Yeah, I think. I think a lot
of look guys that can make plays, that can make shots.
If you just keep a guy in front of you
can pass the basketball. I don't know what it is
(01:41:48):
about lefties. They always seem to have better looking jump
shots too. They can shoot, they can shoot the ball.
I don't know if they're born with that, but yeah,
you're right, the left hand guys can make shots. Okay,
so let's let's get to the big boys. Le's get
to the big boys. Um. If I said there's six
teams that can win a national championship, and I didn't
include Michigan and Michigan State, but the other top two seeds,
(01:42:09):
am I am I missing anybody? No, No, you're not
UM Tennessee, Kentucky Duke, UM Gonzaga. But I think Michigan
is a little short change this year and Michigan State.
I think both of those two dominant Big ten teams
are going to struggle going forward. That's just kind of
(01:42:30):
how I see it too. Okay, so let's let's go through.
Let's go through Duke. I mean, obviously they don't shoot it.
They don't shoot it all that well, shoot it well
at all, they don't. A matter of fact, they're the
worst three point shooting team in the tournament. On the
other hand, I tried to convince you. I've been trying
to convince people like I think those numbers would be
a little bit better if they were all healthy the
(01:42:51):
entire year. I just, you know, because because they're so
kind of top heavy, right really with only three scores.
If you take away Zion for a month, you know,
and then there was Cam Reddish was sick and you
take away now you can load up on those other guys.
Bruno Fernando with just the nast that was a that
was a filthy holy cow. He just know that was
(01:43:12):
that wasn't That wasn't Bruno Fernando. That was Jalen Smith,
right partner, Yes, who's got the goggles? Yeah Long look
back when you rant Long was playing for Eastern Michigan
with the goggle. Very nice. I like the I like
the Grant Long Grant Long reference. Oh man, that is
that is a filthy, filthy dunk. Okay. So um is,
(01:43:35):
if I give you Duke or the other five teams,
who do you take? I like I like the other
five teams. I do um. I think Duke is good
enough to get by because they just they have the size.
And obviously Zion is his is his own mutant by himself.
(01:43:57):
But I think there's other teams in this field that
and beat Dupe because their lack of shooting and again
their lack of experience. They're still freshmen at the end
of the day, so they're gonna make some mistakes if
they're able to bounce back from the mistakes quicker. But
I see there are some other veteran teams that can
beat them. Tennessee can beat them, Kentucky can beat them,
(01:44:18):
and North Carolina can beat down. Yeah, they but they
gotta get in. North Carolina has gotta get there to
get a shot. How much does PJ. Washington be an
injury he's in a cast. Cal Perry saying it's he's
not there's no broken bone, but you know, in a
hard cast does not speak well for him. How much
does that change Kentucky. It changes a lot because they
(01:44:39):
run a lot of sets going through PJ. And obviously
the X factor and it's it's funny, I'm saying it's
to U Doug, but the X factor for Kentucky is
gonna have to be Travis Read. And it's strange because
Travis was such a big time player when the PAC
twelve and then when he got to Kentucky kind of
took a back seat to the young guys. But now
they need Travis Read to be who he was at
(01:45:01):
Stanford in this tournament. Yeah, no, re Travis, listen, Reid,
Travis is a monster score uh and and he's but
he's not a rim protector like p J. Washington is.
And and I also thought they took him a while
to figure figure out how to play with him. And
I think he struggled to kind of figure out like, hey,
this isn't We're not at Stanford. We play a little
bit differently here. And and like you look when they
(01:45:23):
lost in Tennessee last weekend, the whole game change when
he went out after fouling out. So I I can
they win the tournament if PJ. If p J doesn't
Washington doesn't play. I think they still can win the
tournament because the X the X factor is Read Travis.
I believe Read Travis is the key. Took Kentucky win
(01:45:43):
in six games. Gotlip show, Fox Sports Radio. Over Shot
Phillips is our guest NBA prospect analyst on Twitter at
RP three Natural has gotta natural. He's got a YouTube channel,
sports Talk En. That's because he scored nineteen points when
he's a star point guard at Detroit in the University
of Detroit. Okay, so let's let's get to Tennessee and Gonzaga.
(01:46:05):
They've played earlier this year. Whose guards are you buying?
More right? Both teams have ridiculous front lines. Both teams
have have age and experience. But I do think their
backcourts will be calling the question. If I give you
Tennessee or Gonzaga's backcourt, who do you take in one?
I like Tennessee's guys. They're a little tougher. I like
I like Bones. He plays hard, he can stretch the defense,
(01:46:29):
and Rick Barnes has always had a history of coaching
great guards. So I just like Tennessee's guard played from
a toughness standpoint. Gonzaga may have more skilled guards. But
I like Tennessee from the standpoint of I think they
can just get in your face. They'll will shot in
and they're ready to They're ready to take this tournament.
(01:46:51):
I like Tennessee all right. Um, nobody seems to be
want to pick vir Genuine because they lost last year
to a sixth team seed. And on top of that,
Virginia has had a history of not being able to
put the ball in the basket Doug when need to.
So obviously they got a goal guy that can make shots.
(01:47:12):
Um and Hunter are great offensive guys, but they just
have a history of not being able to put the
ball in the hole when they actually counts. So Virginia
has a lot of people waiting for them to actually
score some points when it counts. Um okay, So, uh
Belmont just hit a three. It's seventy seven fifty nine
(01:47:36):
point four seconds to go. Rashon Phillips is our guest,
Murray state Le. I get actually paid to do this
to watch games, talk about the games, and and and
talk to you. Uh okay, So Zion goes one? Right? Yeah?
John Morant or R. J. Barrett too, I would take
John Morant too. I wouldn't even I wouldn't think about it.
(01:47:58):
I wouldn't. John Moran and Cam Reddish for me. Those
two right there, you can't go wrong. See here's the thing.
I agree with your and I've read your analysis of
r J and that he's a bit mechanical. He's kind
of he's kind of stiff in the hips, and he's
not a great show. He's also a guy who's only
played where he has the ball in his hands. Whereas
you know early on the NBA, if you're not that
(01:48:18):
good and you've got the ball in your hands, like
it would be a little bit like D'Angelo Russell, where
there could be a couple of years of struggle there.
Whereas I think I think Zion he can play. He's
not really playing. They're not gonna play through him. He'll play.
He'll play a power forward and play a little small
ball center, and he's already learned to play without the basketball.
That said, can I tell you what I think happens.
I think if Duke wins the National Championship and r
(01:48:40):
J plays well and he's he's a pretty good big
game player, somebody's gonna talk themselves into he's a winner.
I'm gonna take him over John Morn. I wouldn't do it.
I just I couldn't. I couldn't do it. This is
why I can't do it, Doug. You cannot, and I
said this last year. You cannot pass on dynamic point guards.
They're like they're like quarterbacks in basketball. So when you
(01:49:04):
have a chance to draft a guy that can lead
your team from the quarterback position, from the point guard position,
you can't pass on him, or a wide receiver for
a tidy in for a left tackle. You have to
feel the dynamic position first, and that's what John Morandy is.
You have to take him before r J. But it's
an r J essentially. I mean he's on a point guard,
but he is essentially like a got a little you know,
(01:49:25):
the James Harden style of lead lead guard. No no,
no wiggle in his hips. He's a type of score.
I like RJ. So I want people on your shoulder
think I don't like r J R. You're just like
you like you think. John Morant's had a position of
more importance, and he has he has a higher ceiling
because of it. Yes, because of the position he plays
this land, we're talking quarterback and wide receiver, which one
(01:49:48):
is really more important. I'm gonna always go with the
quarterback because that's the person who's controlling the ball, and
that's what John Morandy is. I think R. J. Barrett
is fantastic and transition. He needs to play with a
point guard that can get the ball. What happened, all right?
So Belmont, they're they're down a point, they're down a point,
(01:50:10):
and they ran a play for the last second shot
and it was a back door play and the point
guard passed it and he wasn't really open. But that
is a called set play where on the week side
of the court, it was almost like a little blind
pig action, if you know, the triangle offense, a little
blind pig action. And it was about either the passes
(01:50:31):
deflected or was a terrible pass. But I don't know
why they waited till the last that you're down one,
do you go? And that way if you don't get it,
you get another, you'll get another opportunity. Correct, it's not
it's math. It's math, alright. Give me we've discussed a
(01:50:53):
ton of players. Give me one player where America is
gonna watch and fall in love with I Actually, I know,
I know there's another one you haven't talked about, but
I'm gonna let you tea go ahead. I'm actually I
just jumped in my car with my partner. We're on
our way to watch Fletcher McGee from Waffer and tonight
he will shock the world and Waffer will beat Seton
(01:51:14):
Hall and Fletcher McGhee will break the three point record
tonight and I'll be in attended to watch it. They
can win to night, right, Yeah, they're gonna win. Yeah, yeah,
I mean they shoot a crazy number three? Is there
really efficient? Mike? Mike Young's a good team. I like Waffer,
I like Watford as well. Alright, two point five seconds ago?
Do they have the ball out of balance? Guys, I
(01:51:34):

the Wafford game. Love your stuff, let me know we

deal as well. Let's get you to Dan Buyer, Dan
get men update so I can catch my breath. Yeah,
So Maryland has got another free throw coming, so that's
(01:51:55):
what we've got here. Seventy seventy seven Belmont Trail is
the Terrapins. Terrapins up by two two and a half
seconds to go, so bell montire trying to figure out
a final play. If there is um, there's gonna be
an opportunity for them again. Down by two, Maryland seventy nine,
Belmont seventy seven, two point five seconds left. Kansas is
(01:52:15):
up on Northeastern thirty seven to twenty seven, two minutes
gone by in the second half in that first round game,
while Murray stayed as a thirty three twenty seven lead
on Marquette as the twelve seed are up by six
with three fifty two to go in the first half.
Michigan stayed held on for a seventy six sixty five
win against Bradley and the two fifteen matchup. Next up
(01:52:36):
for the Spartans Big tenfold Minnesota. They beat Louisville today
eighty six to seventy six. Number three l s U
a winner against Yale seventy seventy four, so l s
U awaits the winner of this Belmont Maryland game. Auburn,
the fifth seed, held on for dear life against New
Mexico State break one point one, five quarters, seventy eight
(01:53:00):
to seventy seven. The final on Westwood one, Florida State,
the four seed beat thirteen seed Vermont in the West
Region seventy six to sixty nine. Kentucky's PJ Washington going
to miss tonight's game against Abilene Christian because of a
foot injury. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports saying that Cardinals
are giving first baseman Paul Goldschmid a five year extension
with more than one d and ten million dollars raised,
(01:53:21):
giving Cy Young Award winning pitcher Blake Snell a five
year extension worth about fifty million. Maryland missed the free throw.
Belmont has an opportunity from half court, but that fell
off the mark, So Maryland will advance, beating Belmont the
eleven seed seventy nine to seventy seven. We'll be back
to the Dougotlib Show in ten seconds. But first award
from farmers at Farmers Insurance, we know every windshield collision
(01:53:42):
has a unique sound beatle bird boop, drone, seen it,
covered it? Talk to farmers. We are farmers under written
my Farmers truck Fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products available
in every state. So a couple of favorites have survived, right. Ah,
we Auburn survive, we saw Maryland survive. We saw uh
(01:54:04):
Michigan State survive. We saw Florida State survive. Really good
competitive basketball games though a lot of fun. Uh. Let's
look at Ryan Music trying to defend my honor on
Twitter to these Kentucky idiots. Uh, it just doesn't make
any sense. It's like classic confirmation by have you previously
(01:54:29):
had this reputation as being a Kentucky hater? I know
people think you hate Syracuse. Is this the typical like
everybody thinks they you hate them? No? Uh? Yeah, because
I noticed the Syracuse thing is like, is like literally
literally anybody thinks that I hate Syracuse. It's amazing. But
(01:54:49):
I've never seen the Kentucky thing until today. And now
you're going with Kentucky. Is they're just one of these
like you're either for us or you're you're a hater.
It's kind of college sports. Your quote unquote ratio was
pretty miraculous. At one point it was like three hundred
something almost four hundred comments. What a p o S
(01:55:09):
you are for this tweet I'm just at a total
loss at what a big ass you are. Yeah, shut
the hell up and go away. So many people add
another one to the palm. I'm glad to say it
to your face. No, fake tough guy here, you're the
worst d M from my numbers. I DM this guy
(01:55:30):
for his number and say, hey, man, how's how's it going?
What's up? Bro? What's up? Bro? I'm so tough. Let's
see what this guy looks like. I love where they're like,
they like do that and then you read their do
you read their thing? It's just like follower of Christ,
dad friend, this guy's had nice looking bald dude and
(01:55:50):
so lose lives somewhere in Paduca, Kentucky's like, yeah, okay,
no fake tough guy here, M sure your real dude,
your street, your hood. Uh, who's the best? The best? Uh?
(01:56:11):
Pretty good day for Big ten hoops. By the way,
survive in advanced Big ten three? Oh correct Big ten three?
And oh granted, um you beat the champions of the
Valley Tournament, you beat that at large team in Belmont
and who's the other and then you beat Louisville. Keep
(01:56:32):
it drible alive. Man, that was a bad pass, bad pass.
All right, We'll keep an eye on Ja Morant versus Marquette.
We have a final score with Maryland surviving and everything

every day at this time we like to get you
update on all the stories today. We do so by
(01:57:36):
getting to the press, the press or damn buy what
he got byre Doug. We have got a recap of
the first afternoon of the twenty nine Team n C
Double A Tournament first round action and why not start
(01:57:58):
with the drama, insult Lakes calls the break one point
one five queen quarters free for the wind. Yeah, Alvern
wins it. Yeah, he's Chris falling. The kids doubled over
mid lane, screaming a motion for both teams and a
gas per air has Auburn largely dominates the game and
hangs on to win by a skinny point seventy eight
(01:58:21):
to seventy seven of the final on Westwood one, Yes
over New Mexico State and the head coach Bruce Pearl
by the ways west Wind one with the call. Bruce
Pearl had a message on CBS to Charles Barkley, Charles, Relax,
we got this, we got this. I need your brother,
I need you to be healthy. I don't need that
hard Papleton. Charld was sweating us in a studio more
(01:58:41):
than not sweat. That was Bruce Pearl after the win
today against New Mexico State. Are you not atturned? That was?
That was a crazy sequence events is like, do you
want to win it? Nope? Do you want to win it? Nope?
Do you want to win it nope? Nope. Um. The
only excuse I can make is and it's a legitimate
use playing an altitude, lack of oxygen goes to your brain.
(01:59:03):
You know, got got issues with the brain, the issues
in brain function. Auburn is awaiting the winner of this
Kansas Northeastern game. Kansas up seventeen with thirteen minutes to go.
In Salt Lake City, they are at the half. Murray
State leads Marquette forty two to thirty five. The winner
of that game gets the four seated Florida State Seminars,
who dropped Vermont seventy six to sixty nine. So the
(01:59:27):
Seminals dug survive after a test from the catamounts um
the Seminals are like, look, they're just a team that
looks great, but sometimes they lack, you know, refined execution.
And you know, Vermont played smart, played hit a bunch
of threes, made him play slower, made him think about things.
(01:59:47):
It's actually a way more impressive win than I think
history will will will tell you. Just hey, find a
way to have one more point in your opponent each day,
and and nobody cares at the end of the day
how many won by We talked about it a little
while ago. Maryland and Belmont going down to the wire
by McClaine outlet goes to win. Let's have five front
to good and Maryland will survive and wins at seventy
(02:00:11):
nine seventy seven. Yeah, so the six seeded Terps onto
the next round on Westwood One, where they'll face l
s U who beat Yale earlier seventy four. They were
all have they been? I think the Florid State game
felt like and now the Can's game. The only ones
that are not great games? Right? Any other ones that
were not really good competitive games? Um, Minnesota seemed to
(02:00:32):
keep Louisville at an arm's length, you know, for about
the second half. So that was the other one. The
other close one was Michigan State surviving Bradley seventy sixty
five in a game that was much closer than that
eleven point was. Yes, I was really close for a while.
I wasn't good for the brand, was not good for
(02:00:52):
the finish is not good for the brand. No, No,
it's a better busy day in Major League Baseball. The
Marylander's top the Eights five to four and twelve innings
in Tokyo. In the eighth inning, each ro Suzuki left
the game for the Mariners, leaving the field for the
final time, announcing his retirement. Afterwards, I ro leaves the
game as the active hit leader. I guess now he's inactive,
(02:01:13):
so he's no longer. But the point is three thousand
eighty nine hits for each Row during his major league career,
groundbreaking career, right coming over from Japan, had a unique style. Um, yes,
first ballot Hall of Famer, no question. I don't remember.
Is he can seen as a good guy? I always
(02:01:33):
thought so yeah, I mean yeah, I I don't know
if I don't know, I just hadn't heard enough about him.
I know that his All Star Game rituals were always
legendary for the in the American League clubhouse. So putting
on a show for the guys, having some fun in
the locker room. Stuff that I've heard. Bryce Harpero had
some fun today in grape Fruit League play. What do
(02:01:54):
you do? First run of the spring? Give him all
the money, all of it. Where's Mike jacket, here's my shoes,
here's my watch, Take all the money. Right home ring
against the Blue Jays, the team that plunked him when
he had that was beamed down the foot. So yeah,
he gets revenge today in a rematch of that fall
classic walls. Wall Street Journal reports that Collige, Kaepernick, and
(02:02:17):
Eric Read will each receive less than ten million dollars
in their settlement with the National Football League. You touched
on this earlier, Yeah, this, this seems slightly lower than
Mike Freeman's. Hey, I heard he got sixty eighty million dollars. Yeah,
not so much. Um, NFL just wrote it wrote a check,
a rather large one. Right. We've gotten to the point
(02:02:37):
where ten million dollars is not a lot of money,
by the way, right, like, oh, ten me that's all
they got. Ten means a lot of money, but it's
not so much that it feels like the NFL is
admitting guilt. Two signings of the NFL today, I'm curious, Doug,
which one you like better? Justin Houston pass Rush are
going to the Indianapolis Colts and the Saints are expected
to sign tight end Jared Cook. Which one do you
(02:02:58):
like better? Um? I like Justin Houston to the Colts,
the turf, the chance to rebuild his career when healthy.
Remember he was dynamic. Um, I feel like that's that's
a that's a that's a bigger one. What do you think?
Who do you like? I like Cook in that Saints offense.
I think for what could kind of revitalized his career.
This past season with the Raiders didn't really live up
(02:03:20):
to expectations, except for a big catch for Green Bay
in the playoffs against the Cowboys and maybe a big
fantasy game here there. But I like Cook with the Saints.
Oh and by the way, it's official Rams Cowboys in
Hawaii preseason football August. Backing out there and pressed. That
was the press. Beware the back door cover also no limit,
(02:03:42):
small sample size right like Minnesota fifth worst the fewest
number of threes made per this year, and of course
they made eleven threes, which is six above their average.
So small sample size and uh one pro can carry you.
As we're watching John Marint carry Murray State enjoy the hoops.
