Speaker 1 (00:00):
On social media is fair and unfair all at the
same time. Right, Like, let me just let me just
ask you this. If you asked Kevin Durant, are you
staying with the Golden State Warriors next season? What answer
can he give that works out for him? Now he
(00:23):
may at this point think one thing or the other,
but one he's you're actually allowed to change your mind.
You're actually let me give you an example here, okay,
and my personalizing this, Yes, this is seven years ago,
seven years ago in the spring, so like six and
three quarters years ago. Um, I had been at ESPN
(00:43):
for nine years ten years total, nine years up in Connecticut,
and I I had written down a number that I
felt like I was worth and my agent at the
time had said, you'll never get that number. And at
the time, I also I wanted stability, and I wanted
a a four or five year deal. And after a
(01:07):
little bit of wrangling, after being low balled the first month,
it started to get close. And then wouldn't you know what,
they hit the number and it was a five year deal.
Wouldn't have to move get to do the same gig,
get dug in dig Roots. I lived in what I
still consider to be my Uh. It was a favorite
(01:28):
house that I lived, lived in, favorite house, incredible neighborhood,
cost of living was good. The weather didn't bother me
as much as it bothered maybe my wife at the
time because we had little kids. Um, there were a
couple of things that I wanted to do. I wanted
to put in a pool, I wanted to put in
a little court, and this contract would allow me to
do so. And I remember getting the offer. It was
(01:51):
on a Friday night, and a bunch of the dudes
in town, A bunch of the dudes in town and
our fives, we were all going down to um one
of the two casinos, and so we went to miss
the area Mystic is Mistic, Connecticut, and we had dinner,
a great dinner down there. And I hadn't even really
(02:13):
talked to my wife about it. I just kind of
told her the number and the years. But I remember
announcing to the dinner table, Hey, I know you guys
didn't ask, But we talked about a little bit. Looks
like I'm staying and they were like gr We toasted
everybody and it was awesome. We kind of all went
around and made like some personal announcements about our families.
It was like five couples, and I meant at that moment,
(02:39):
I wasn't even considering fielding on other offers because they
had gotten to a point. I was like, that's a
good number. And the only thing I had kind of
come up with was, hey, I asked for five different things.
Could you if you get back to me you hit
all those five different things, I will, I will sign
the contract tomorrow. This We'll get back to your Monday.
And so we went to the casino and it was like,
(03:01):
I'm gonna say, like Melissa Ethridge or somebody like that,
that I had no none of the guys had any
desire to go see. And so what we decided to do,
and this is a good thing. You should. This is
a good like guys, you know, date night type deal.
The women went to the concert and the guys we
went and gambled. It's a good deal, right. So we're
shooting dice, you know, we're playing cards, we're having a
good time, having a couple of drinks, and I'm walking
(03:24):
around with a buddy and he's like, man, he's talking
about my girls and I was like, wow, you really
know them. It's like, yeah, I coached them in soccer.
It was awesome. It's a shame that you have to
work right then, because it's so much fun to coach them.
At the time, my son was like two and my
daughters were like five. And at that very moment I
(03:47):
changed my mind. I look, I had, I had said,
I love where I live, I love the people I live,
I like where I work, I like everything about and
then I realized that the same show. And I've been
doing this this time slot for years now. There it
was four to seven Eastern time, and though my commune
(04:08):
wasn't arduous, you get home at seven thirty, maybe seven,
but when your kids are two and you have three
kids that are five and under, you get home at
seven five, they're asleep, and then when they get to
school age, you know, you literally never see him. Plus
I work weekends, weekend nights, and I travel a lot.
(04:30):
At that very moment, I changed my mind, like, man,
I gotta find a way to get a different time
slot at different time zone, which is what I did.
So I asked, So, I asked you in regards to
Kevin Durant, like what can he say if he says
I'm staying maybe he is staying or maybe he changes
his mind. If he says, hey, guys, I don't know,
(04:52):
I don't I have no idea, Well, I don't, I
have no idea means he must be leaving. And if
he says he's leaving because that's how he feels, one,
he could change his mind. And to now the sudden
it becomes, why is he leaving? This is unfair. You
can't even you can't tell the truth because one the truth,
uh may may harm your current team, and to the
(05:13):
truth today might not be the truth next week, might
not be the truth in five hours. So I understand
that he's that that he has come across terse and
he has he has not made it easy on himself
personally trying to defend himself. But you also have to
(05:33):
take into the account his mentality. His mentality was, hey,
everyone said Kevin Rant, but you know he's done everything
but win a championship, and he thinks of himself as
the best player on Earth. And you know what, I
kind of agree with him. I play both ends. I
play I can play all five positions, I can shoot,
i can score. I'm basically a walking bucket, and I
(05:56):
become a really good defensive player. And oh yeah, by
the way, if you want to argue my clutchedness, how
come I was better than Lebron when Lebron was guarding
me and I was guarding him in each of the
last two NBA finals. It's a strong argument. And so
right now he's in this kind of he's in this
the space where he's not really a warrior, but he
(06:17):
is a champion. And if he stays, he can keep
winning championships. But does will he ever win over people
who think he joined a seventy three win team that
already won one out two titles ran And so he
doesn't actually know if you were that good, but you
didn't feel like you got the respect that you deserved
and you thought about going elsewhere, Like this is what
(06:39):
happens in business. But we're really going to ask guys
again and again what they're doing in July in February.
I don't know what I'm doing next week. So yeah,
I'm kind of on team Durant sort of side. He
just wants to play basketball. I understand what the media
is asking, but at some point the answer becomes enough.
(07:02):
It just becomes enough. So I listened to Kevin Durant,
and I'm not offended by it people talking about what
he's thinking, what he's saying, what he's doing, because he's
not saying it, and they don't know what he's gonna do.
And we may be all intrigued by it. But the
fact is, if you've ever switched jobs, or you've ever
(07:23):
had a contract set to expire, you start thinking and
exploring about it. You can't lose track of the actual
job that you have during the time in which you
have it. So I listened to Durant. I'm actually gonna
defend him. Has he done immature things in the past, Yeah,
he hasn't helped himself. I would also say that if
(07:48):
he doesn't like negativity coming from the media, which he
didn't like in Oklahoma City when they put Mr. Unreliable
and then the team made the newspaper apologize for the headline,
you might want to reconsider the idea of New York City.
But in terms of general fairness from the media, I
(08:11):
don't think it's fair that we continue to pound and
hound and hawk after an answer that we want that
he doesn't know that there isn't sort of clarity for
because we're not in July. And while it is your
job to get what people are saying, at some point, Okay,
(08:33):
we understand people have said that they think he might
go to New York. The Nicks have told everybody he's
coming to New York. But I look at Kevin Durant,
I see a little bit of myself. What he thought
last week might not be what he thought yesterday might
not be what he thinks today. And the last thing
that he really really wants or deserves even is to
(08:55):
constantly be asked about a decision he doesn't have to
make today. Chris Brushard joins the show. Coming next, Anthony
Davis seems to be on a path the remaining a
Pelican for the rest of the season. Did the Pelicans
make a mistake by holding onto this asset? And Philadelphia
has made moves? The Rafters have made a huge move,
(09:18):
The Bucks have made moves. How do we rank the
top teams in the East and are they legit candidates
to take down the Warriors in the West. All that's
up coming next with Chris Brushard. But first, you know
it's not smart, by my estimation, training your entire team
for one player not smart. You know it is smart.

Eastern time, four o'clock Pacific time, Monday through Friday right
(11:51):
here on Fox Sports Radio. He and I got a
chance to co host The Dan Patrick Show was that
Tuesday of this week at Tuesday of this week, where
we we argued back and forth the Lakers package, to
value the players that they have, etcetera. Um, unless something's changed,
I'm watching TV, I'm on the internet. I haven't seen
anything in regards to the Pelicans trading Anthony Davids, so
(12:13):
it looks like he's going to remain. Uh, Chris, let's
start with the Pelicans perspective, was that the right move? Unquestionably?
I mean, uh, I think it would have been foolish
of them to trade him before the deadline. The only
way I could have seen a deal happening with the
Lakers would have been if the Lakers had gotten a
third or fourth team involved and gotten a start to
(12:36):
New Orleans in that deal. So maybe I'm just throwing
out a name like if they could have got Portlands
involved and Damian Lillard would have went to New Orleans
or something like that. Other than that, it just didn't
make sense to me why New Orleans would make this
move when Boston, who you know, may or may not
be able to make a better offer, couldn't even do
(12:59):
it until June or you lie, when the Nicks who
you know may or may not be willing to give
up the first or second pick. Can't do that until
May or June or July, you know, so like other
teams couldn't even put their best foots forward on the
trade market. So why would I do it now? And
I think they can get a good package from the
Lakers this summer. Um, yeah, if if that package still
(13:23):
still exists, what about the Lakers that they made one trade.
They got Mike Muscala, and they made a cross town
trade where where Beasley was gone. They traded Beasley and
they traded Uh, what's the big kid? Who's Actually I'm
surprised they let Zubach go because I think he's their
best offensive big Um. You know, I think Jabal McGhee
(13:47):
and Tyson Chandler or some similar and that they're both
kind of limited offensively. Uh, you know, they're decent rim protectors.
But I would I was very surprised that they let
subotcho because I think he's a pretty good player. Well,
this this admits that they made a mistake in the
offseason not resigning Brook Lopez. They need to stretch. They
need somebody who's got a reputation as a stretch big
(14:09):
and that's what they got. And I think they overpay.
You know, they easily contract. They'll just Clippers a buy
out right and Subotch is only one years old. I
think the Clippers won the deal because the Lakers admitting
a mistake in the offseason, They've They've added two shooters,
they have one open roster spot. Will that be Carmen
Anthony's all? The speculation is that it's gonna be Mellow,
(14:30):
which I I look at this point, what's the what's
the harm? You know what I mean? I mean this
this season has really turned upside down for the Lakers.
So what's the problem in bringing in Melow. Do I
think it will work? Not really. I don't think it
will be anything great. Um But you know, I've always
(14:50):
said it's about Mellow since you know, he's been out
of the league. He's better than most of the players
in the league. This is not that he's not still
an NBA quality player. It's just that there's really no
fit for him anywhere, you know, And um, I don't
think this is a great fit. We've seen Lebron do
this before. He brought Dwayne Way back to Cleveland. Derek
(15:12):
Roses in Cleveland. You know, all these things he wants
to make happen, But I just don't see this being
a great fit between with with Mellow with the Lakers. Um.
And it'll be interesting if you know, it's Mellow's not
getting a lot of playing time. He's obviously not gonna
be happy. And what's that going to you know what
(15:35):
will come of that? If indeed that's okay, dude, then
they could He didn't make it to Thanksgiving in Houston. Alright,
all right, well, Houston as a team is playing for
something at this point. What are the Lake is playing for?
But my my, my point is like, look, Houston wasn't
even willing, willing to see There's something about how he
(15:56):
purports himself, what he does that Houston. What it is
is that he still thinks he's a star. He still
thinks he's a star. If he were the exit gracefully
like a Paul Pierce, even a Gary Tayton of Vince Carter.
You know, guys that understood. I'm no longer a star,
but I just want to be a part of the team.
(16:17):
I play a role. Even Dwayne ways done that, then
he would be fun. But he's he's going out like
Alan Iverson, where I still think I'm the twenty point scorer.
I still still think I should get at least fifteen
shot tonight. I still think I should start. And the
one thing he has going in this whole thing, Doug
is Lebron. That's his boy, and we know Lebron is
(16:39):
running the franchise, so that's about all he has going
for you. But I look, I'm with you. I mean,
Houston was never a good fit because he completely is
the opposite of their style of play. They want to
shoot threes all the time. Um, that's not his game.
They want to move, you know. So I just think, uh,
I never would have I would not bring Mellow to
(17:01):
l A if I were the Lakers. But at this point,
they've had so much go wrong, I'm just like, well,
what what's what's what's one more problem there? Correct? Yeah,
that's a month ago, I would have told you no
way that ruins the chemistry on the team. Now they
have no chemistry on the team. So at least at
least I know someone will talk to Lebron since no
(17:23):
one else did you. I don't know if you heard this.
Lebron just said that he's that shoot around today at
the Boston Guarden get ready to take on the Celtics.
He said he has He's not there's nothing more he
has to play for. He's not chasing anything. Why would
he say that, You know, I think that too lower.
I don't know if I could say lower expectations, if
(17:44):
that's the right phrase. But it's if he doesn't win
another title, which I if I had to bet, gun
to my head, I don't think Lebron James was another
championship and I and I might say that even if
they get Anthony Davis um. But I look talking to
Lebron's guys, all this has been going on for really
(18:06):
since he's been in l A, since last summer. There
they were, this is not new. I've heard this plenty
of times from them, that hey, Lebron has proved everything.
You know, he's got his three championships, he won Cleveland Championship.
He's one of the best. Heason you know, they didn't
use this phrase, but you know he's on the Mount
rushmore of NBA players, some of them. Some people think
(18:28):
he's the greatest of all time. You and I don't
agree with don't believe that. But obviously a lot of
these millennials do. So that's kind of been in the
rallying cry for his you know, his group for a
while now. Um, and I think this is the first
time we've heard him said publicly. This. This actually too Doug.
I think this You could even relate this to when
(18:49):
he said Remember when he said in that episode of
I think more than an athlete, I'm the greatest player
of all time. Now, you know, after he beat Golden State, this,
you know, all kind of goes together. If he starts,
if he truly feels he's the greatest player of all times,
then he certainly doesn't feel like he has anything left
to prove. And I think, uh, that could be you know,
(19:13):
if he doesn't win another ring, he can he can
go with the narrative of, Hey, I did everything I
needed to do. Don't look down at me because I
couldn't get the Lakers of Ring. Christophers are our guest.
You can hear him on The Odd Couple every day
at seven o'clock Eastern, four o'clock Pacific, alongside his Everyone's
crazy uncle Rob Parker on the Odd Couple Doug Olive
(19:36):
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, since the
Lakers did nothing and appeared to be a bit of
a dumpster fire. Right now, let's get to the stuff
that does in fact matter. The East, with the exception
of the Celtics, all three of the other top teams
in the East added a big piece. Um who made
the best acquisition for people are just catching up. Marc
Gasol is now a member of the Toronto Raptors. UM.
(19:59):
Let's see here. The Sixers added Tobias Tobias Harrison and
could still add some other pieces. They had some other
pieces well, and they traded away Marquel Folds. We'll get
to that in UM. And then they got Jonathan Simmons,
who I like. I like him a lot, and and
the and the Bucks added. The Bucks added Nicola Meritach,
who obviously had a great playoff series last year. With
(20:21):
the it gives them more shooting around Janice. Who got
who got better? Well, I think they all got better.
I'm not trying to avoid the question, but I mean,
Mirritage is a great shooter. And you see, you know
how Milwaukee plays. I mean they spread the floor around
Joannice and and they picked you apart on the perimeter.
Or he's gonna get to the basket at will, so
(20:43):
I think he'll be a great fit for them, just
gives him another weapon for the postseason. Toronto. You know
how great of a passer Marc Gasol is. That's despite
having Kauai as a high score. That's the team that
moves the ball pretty well. And I think his passing
will fit in really well with that team. So they
got better. And then Philadelphia Tobias Harris, who I think
(21:08):
is not only a good health this year, but he's
insurance in case they decide they don't want to resign
Jimmy Butler. I know there's talk right now that they're
gonna try to have a big four with Nbat, Simmons, Butler,
and Tobias. I tend to think that they may let
Butler walk Um and I think Tobias, though he's not
as good as Butler, he's he's a better fit because
(21:29):
he's he can handle me in the third guy. He
doesn't have a huge he go, he's a great guy
and he's a shooter. He's a twenty points for who
can shoot better than Butler. So I think he helps
in Flora spacing Um and there Jonathan Simmons is athletic.
I think he can defend he's you know, he played
in the San Antonio system, so he knows Brett Brown,
(21:50):
and I think he's got some winning uh intangibles coming
from San Antonio. So I actually think they got better.
My problem with Philadelphia and I love him as an
m B, but I don't think that team right now,
Doug has the intangibles to win the East. I don't
think they execute particularly well. I don't think Simmons and
Embiid are mature enough yet to win the East. I
(22:13):
think whenever they play Boston, Brett Brown is a good coach,
but Brass Stevens just he out coaches and when they meet,
and like that series last year, could have went four
one Philly, but down the stretch of every game pretty
much Philly made mistakes and Boston didn't. And Boston, who
we drew up the right plays out of time out
(22:35):
and executed properly, and they beat them. If Philly can
avoid Boston, they could go pretty far. But if they
meet Boston, they're not. There's no way I see them
beating Boston, even though they probably have more talent. So um,
But to answer your question, I think all four of
these teams are these three teams got better. Um, it's hard.
(22:58):
It's really hard for me to pick the best team
in the East right now because I think Milwaukee, Toronto,
and Boston are all very close, pretty much neck and
neck in the East. Let me ask you about what
Kevin Durant had to say last night they bled San
Antonio Spurs. He hadn't spoken to the meeting in a
couple of days. Here's what he said afterwards. Now now, now, first,
(23:42):
let me I'll say this about whether it's it's Lebron's
instagram last night about Harrison Barnes being traded in game,
even though Harrison Barnes apparently had been told about the
trade before the game, right, or or it's KD like, Look,
if you guys signed long term deals and you didn't
try and blow up your team the way that Lebron has, like,
maybe we wouldn't ask as many questions. On the other hand,
(24:05):
he doesn't have a point like, look the decision until July.
It's only February. They're still figuring out how to play together.
What's your take on Kevin Durant and what he said
about how he's being come Well, I get it from
a human perspective and I think you can relate to
it too. Um, it's tough when you're being psychoanalyzed and
(24:25):
speculated about all the time, and and some of the
speculation and psychoanalysis is just wrong. But here's the problem,
and what Kevin is not recognized. This is what comes
with any job in the public sphere, whether you're a
politician and actor, actress, entertainer, whatever, if you do it
(24:46):
in the public realm, you're going to get scrutinized and
critiqued beyond measure. I mean, the most powerful person in
the world, President of the the United States, whether it was Trump,
whether it was Obama before him, you get criticized and
scrutinized all day every day. Kevin Durant happens to be
one of the best players we've ever seen on the
(25:07):
one of the best teams we've ever seen. And like
you said, add into that that you you're gonna be
a free agent, um, or you can be a free agent.
Adding to that that all of a sudden, you've been
you've been, you've been available for every podcast all season long,
and then all of a sudden, as soon as the
Knicks make a trade where they can get you in
another star you go dark on the media. I mean,
(25:30):
this just comes with the territory. And so if you
don't want public scrutiny, then don't be prolific in a
public job. It's as simple as that. And you, Doug,
you you're criticized. I'm criticized, Get Baylens, You're Stephen A. Smith,
They're all criticized. If you can't take it, then don't
be in that profession. You just want to play basketball
(25:52):
us now how it works. You want to be a
guy at the y and open gyms and nobody cares
about you know, you want to play ball. You want
to get the mill, you want to get you want
to get uh you know, all the fame and all
the perks that go with that. Um that this is
part of what comes with the territory. Yeah, but what
(26:13):
is he what is he supposed to answer? Right? Like?
What is he if he says he's not getting anything
that Lebron James isn't getting and that Kyrie Irvan isn't
getting or hasn't gotten and they've been able to handle it,
you know, I mean it's you don't he could have
easily been like you know, the I don't want to
talk about free agency. And again, it's not only the
(26:34):
media either. It's his own teammate Draymond brought it up
in the heat of a game, so he can't he's
putting it on the media. It's not just the media.
And I think Durrant has to recognize his personality type,
which is fine, he's not a criticism, but his personality
type cannot handle constantly seeing social media criticism speculation. I
(26:56):
think he should get off social media. A should thing
like that. Look, I recognized that when when after the
Dallas series where he couldn't uh, you know, he stopped
being on social media during the playoffs because he couldn't
stand seeing that stuff and you get voices in your head.
And I think he has to realize that that's the
(27:18):
type of person he is and he should get off
of it. I agree with you. Like, listen, we've all
gone through I've at least gone through a period of time.
I don't know what you were like when you when
you left your your last job, like where you feel like,
am I still relevant if I'm not on there or whatever?
You know, and you'll be you you you will be.
It's like and it's like, well, this is a necessary evil? Uh,
(27:41):
what it is? Because because I think any human being
can relate to not wanting to be criticized and scrutinized
and and and psychoanalyzed. I mean, and I know it
because I've read articles about me where people speculated about
who was a source of mind or who said this
and gave me that, and they were completely wrong. And
(28:01):
I was like, dude, what are they doing? And you know,
I get why Durant might feel that way, but it's,
like you said, it's just kind of a necessary evil
with the job. And you know you're you're paid handsomely
to deal with it. And I know money doesn't answer
all problems, but he's a handle of a consolation. Doug
outlet the show here on Fox Sports Radio Christmas. Sorry,
(28:22):
check out The Odd Couple every day, seven o'clock Eastern,

a word from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a

covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or

farmers under written my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and

February fourteenth, so that's a week from today. What gift
(30:30):
are you getting for the one you love? Say four
dollars on the a half carrot total weight diamond Hart
pendant now only to show cube. But who's boss this
Valentine's Day at Hellsburg Diamonds um some conflicting reports here,
this from Adam Himmelsbach, who's a Celtics beat writer for
the Boston Globe. Have been hearing that some within the
(30:51):
Pell's organization want an a d trade now, partly to
get the pr mess distraction out of the way, but
that owner Gayle Benson and vice president Mickey Loomis are
more focused on the Saints and they're unfazed by the noise.
In other words, that they're still complaining about the miscall
in the NFC Championship game three weeks ago instead of
(31:12):
what to do with the other team. UM. Fascinating. And
then you have Brian Winhurst, who reported for ESPN that
this entire show was just to make the Lakers look
bad and to and to to blow up the Lakers. Well,
I'm here to tell you it has it has. They
(31:38):
gave away zoo Bach, who's probably is their best offensive
big guy because they needed a stretch five like, Okay,
they make a move and trade Vi Mahi Luke, who's
a good young shooter who they really like, for Reggie Bullock,
who's a more of a veteran shooter. Probably the worst
(32:01):
part of the whole thing is Lebron James suddenly saying
he's not chasing anything. Have you ever heard player? Have
you ever heard that from a guy who's a superstar?
Why are you playing if you're not chasing anything? That's
(32:22):
a wow? And this whole way lowering expectations. Okay, who
does that when you want to be considered the greatest
player of all time? A historic trade today in the NBA. Guests,
who was involved? I'll tell you next. From a hot
air balloon landing on a car to a load of
concrete falling on one, we've covered it. Talked to farmers.

We know a thing or two. Because we've seen a

This is game time side on the Doug gott Leave Show.
Valentine's Day is Thursday, February four teen. What gift are
you getting for the one you love? Save fours on
the half carrot total weight diamond hartpended. Now just show
(33:54):
Cubid his boss this Valentine's Day at Helsberg diamonds Day
fed the game today. Yeah, alright, I guess who made
a trade with each other today for the first time
since nineteen eighty three, the Clippers and the Lakers. Jeez,
I feel you cheated. I really feel that you did. Know.
I saw the Clippers and I actually know the trade.
(34:15):
In questions, that was the Norm Nixon trade. Norm Nixon,
Eddie Jordan and a second around pick in nineteen eighty
six were traded from the Lakers to the Clippers for
Jeff Hornes sec the music that we were playing and
uh no, just kidding Byron Scott's when Nader and a
pick that's a good that's a good trade for the Lakers.
(34:36):
Back in the day, right, Norm Nixon was at the
end of his run, and that was Byron Scott was
like a rookie back then it was yeah, yeah Nixon,
Jordan's and then a pick that became Jeff HORNI sect
this from Ramona Shelburne. But the first first trade in
thirty six years between the Lakers and Clippers, I'm gonna
I'm gonna say like things you never thought you hear.
Somebody say that the Lakers appear to be the Clippers
(34:57):
appeared to be better run than the Lakers. All so
you you didn't have it too often where it's like,
you know what, that Clipper would be a good Laker.
That that probably didn't happen too often in the eighties
and nineties. But here we are today. Guess who dug
at a shoulder injury that apparently wasn't as bad as expected? Uh?
Cam Newton, Yes, two for two. In fact, Cam's doctors
(35:19):
said they went into the shoulder there wasn't as much
cartilage damage as they thought, so Cam should be a
full go once training. He's expected to make a full
recovery a sentence that you here after every athletic surgery.
But Ryan Music, you can you're I said, God is
my witness, Ryan Music close to God, very godlike Ryan.
(35:41):
Remember what I said when I heard that they were
using a team surgeon. What I thought that meant? You
thought that that meant it was not a very serious injury.
Otherwise they would be referring him out to a specialist
such as Dr James Andrews. Are you guess who Doug
is on the list to take part in the NFL
(36:01):
scouting combine at the end of the month, Kyler Murray
three for three Murray is on the list of participants.
Now he could also not show. But it should be
known that pictures and catchers report for the Oakland A's,
or excuse me, position players report for the Oakland A's
a week from tomorrow. Um, look, he's clearly gonna go
(36:22):
go for football and see see how it goes there.
Did Baker Mayfield say you run a four or three
or four to music? Which one did you say? I
think he said four two? Well, I thought he said
four two might have been four three. I thought he
said four to like he's gonna run whatever he said
he said it with with full confidence. I can't wait because,
(36:42):
unlike Lamar Jackson, I think he's gonna run. It's quite
a big difference between four to nine and four to one, though, right,
I mean yeah, I think there is no now now now,
no now now now now this past weekend that the
NFL experience, it's around like a four to two, which
would have tied the fastest ever, and he did it
(37:04):
in street close. I'm just saying, if four to two
seems the fastest ever, four to nine, yeah, I know
it's now no now, but guests who Doug has said
the most players to the twenty nineteen NFL Combine, you
can do, team, you can do. Coach Clemson, Yeah, yeah,
Alabama and Nick Saban also would have been sufficient, both
(37:25):
schools sending eleven players to the combine. Ohio State came
in third with ten players from the combine. I thought
Elbert Breer sent a tweet that was pretty interesting. Clemson
sending nine defensive players, the Big twelve sending twelve amazing. Yeah,
that's that's that's kind of that's an amazing stat Although
(37:46):
if you saw a big twelve defenses, he'd be like, yeah,
makes sense, Okay, Doug your four for four? Do you
want to press your luck and keep going on? Guests?
Al right, guests, who Doug is an All Star? That
will be a new member of the Philadelphia Phillies. All Star.
That's a new member of the Phillies. Um oh is
(38:06):
j t uh real Mudo is on his way to Philadelphia.
The Athletic reports that the Phillies will acquire the All
Star catcher in exchange for four players. Now, the Dodgers
have been a possibility for real mutto in fact the
Yankees last year. We're very interested in the catcher, at
least the city of New York was for the Yankees.
But he will now become a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.
(38:29):
Didn't they get what's that pictures name? Six toe guy?
There's a guy named like it seeks though, but yes,
that's a great name, right he Oh, my name is
six Sanchez, Like, no way, that's not your name. That's
my name, six Sanchez. It's a great name. The exact
opposite of Bob Walk. You know, when you're a picture
you didn't want walking. Bob Walk was decent though. Alright, yeah,
(38:53):
finally Doug for a perfect game here on guess who
on the crew. I don't still hasn't worn any of
the souvenirs that he received from the Super Bowl to work.
I got a couple of hats. Yeah, I got a
couple of hats. Got his shirts still nowhere to be
found for John Ramos keeping them for a good occasion. John.
(39:15):
Is that? What's Uhbay? That's not true. By the way,
I wore my hats on Monday when I got out question. Yeah,
I just had. I wore your shirt last night at
the softball practice. So Dan, oh, thank you, thank you
very much. I just haven't I haven't seen any of
the This is Game Time on the Duck Gottlieb Show,
(39:37):
Doug Gotlim Show here on Fox Sports Radio Eastern Conference,
kind of loading up. But I actually think that the
Raptors going out and adding Marcasol, the Bucks going out
and adding Nicolamiri Tich, the Sixers adding um Tobias Harris,
(40:00):
I actually think it explains why we shouldn't freak out.
We shouldn't freak out, not that those teams freaked out,
but we shouldn't hyper analyze because the analysis is right
there in front of us. I'll explain up coming next
on the Doug Gotlip Show, What Up Doug Gottlieb Show,
(40:20):
Fox Sports Radio. It's brought to you by Farmers. At Farmers,
we've seen almost everything, so we know how to cover
almost anything when it's game time. How the experienced player
come help you stay ahead of the game. Put their
experience in the plant Farmers dot Com Farmers to do. Um. Okay,
(40:42):
So this is is fascinating to me. First, I want
to play for you something, Lebron James. We have it,
guys playing with Lebron James said earlier today. I want
to get to that. Um. Well, we'll keep searching for
that all I mean, I guess I'll just tell you
what he said and uh. And then I want to
get into something which is a constant offseason discussion the
(41:04):
past couple of years, which, if you stop and take
a breath, has now become a nonsensical discussion. First, Lebron James.
Earlier today, because the Lakers did not land Anthony Davis,
I came out and said, hey, look, with all he's accomplished,
he's not not chasing anything. And this is where maybe
(41:26):
he is balanced, Maybe he is set in life. Maybe
his his his career is bigger than basketball. But man,
Larry Bird wouldn't say that. Michael Jordan wouldn't say that.
Magic Johnson might say it, but everybody knows you wouldn't
mean it. Kobe wouldn't say that. I go through the
(41:49):
list of the all time grades and the idea that
in a sport where you've been to the finals eight
straight years, you say, I'm good. I'm not chasing anything.
Why are you still playing? Why are you still here?
(42:12):
Here's here's Lebron James earlier today. There's nothing I need
to give in this league that I don't already have.
So everything else, you know, for me, it's just like
icon on the cake. You know, I love you know
the process of everything that I go through to be
able to compete every single night. UM put teams the
position to compete for championships. But there's nothing I'm that
(42:33):
I'm chasing or that I feel like I need saying.
My career, nothing that you're chasing. No, there's one thing
you're supposed to be chasing, right, one thing, like don't
tell me Lebron James goes out with flats on was
my My buddy said that to his wife one time.
That's a music. Here's a here's a when you ultimately
(42:55):
get married to your fiance. Probably not the thing to say,
which is when she throws on some flats, going, hey,
flats are kind of mowing it in. You guys know
what flats are. Flats are the women's shoes that have
no heat, and they're not heels, you know, because the
heels make everything that make you look taller, make everything
else look better. Calves are flexed booties popping out like look.
(43:19):
Calves are for them to make women feel better about
themselves and for us to think they look better than
they really do. Right, it's they weren't the thing? They are?
They uncomfortable? Yes, they bad for your feet. Sure? Is
it uncomfortable to sometimes lose if you're pursuing a championship? Yes?
(43:41):
Is it unhealthy? The the it was Kobe's obsession with
winning unhealthy shore. He wasn't balanced at all. But that's
what winners and champions do when winning everything and anything.
I'm I'm enjoying the process. I I don't believe that
you enjoyed the process when there's the result at the end.
(44:03):
That was a weird one, Like really, that's one where
there's I mean this isn't This is an NBA made
of alpha's and he's supposedly the ultimate Alpha, and he
just iced out all of his teammates to try and
get Anthony Davis. He didn't get it, and his response
should be, Hey, hell with it. Whoever we have in
this team, we're rolling, we're winning. Am I chasing it? Yeah?
(44:28):
I got a four year deal. I want to chase
four of them. This is this might be catching release,
but you gotta catch before you can release. That one
strikes me as weird, like Lebron just says a lot
of weird stuff that get brushed aside. That's a weird thing. Um.
I think I'm the only guy who's pointed this out.
(44:48):
And what happens is if you say anything not seen
as fawning over Lebron, you're you're like a hater. Ah.
Lebron is a great player, an all time great player,
No one's disputing that. But one of the things that
kind of helps his perception is the well he went
to the Eastern Conference Final. He went to the NBA
finals eighthtraight years, which is true, and that's inargurably impressive,
(45:13):
really impressive. It should be pointed out that the Eastern
Conference was not only down, but when he left Cleveland
a sixty one win Cleveland team, we would all agree
he destroyed and they tore down that team, right, So
the best team in the East was torn down. That
also coincided with the Celtics being over the hill. And
then ultimately he brought down the Celtics further by landing
(45:35):
Ray Allen when he got to Miami, by teaming up
Duane Wade and teaming up with Chris Bosh. That that
condensed from Toronto being a playoff team, Cleveland being a
finals contender, to not neither of those teams being uh
(45:56):
being being close. And then he kind of pulled out
the last chair for the legs of the Boston Celtics,
and that was a rap that that's three teams in
the East that were competitive that all at once were
brought down because he went to Miami and guys followed him.
Then he went to Cleveland, built the superpower there, and
the superpower that was in Miami lost him and lost
(46:17):
Chris Bosh because of the blood clots. The Celtics went
to rebuild mode. The Sixers were trusting the process, the Warrior,
the Raptors, as well. It was like, no, there was
a couple of years there of the Indiana Pacers, they
were far and away the best. They had, far and
away the best talent in the East when he was
(46:38):
You remember they traded for Kevin Love who was a
perennial All Star, and had Kyrie Irving, a former number
one pick. They weren't underdogs. They were supposed to get there.
But there was a lot of discussion over the past
couple offseasons and hey, maybe they should go to one
through six team, Maybe they should do away with the
Eastern and Western Conference playoffs because the East was so
(46:59):
dam on. Today, the Milwaukee Bucks added Nicolamritis. This is
the Bucks are already forty and thirteen. The Toronto Raptors
added Mark of sul This is the Raptors who went
to the who have been to the Eastern Conference finals,
couldn't get over Lebron. And last year they pulled off
a trade where they upgraded right, DeMar de Rosen and
(47:20):
Kawahi Leonard. Kawhi Leonards the top five player in the NBA.
DeMar de Rosen is not that's an upgrade for Toronto.
Granted one year rental. That's an upgrade. The Boston Celtics,
who have had the best record in the East in
in the East two years ago. Last year, for the
second straight year, went to the Eastern Conference finals. And
then the Philadelphia seventies six ers, who everybody thinks of
(47:42):
super talented. They added Tobias Harris. So you think about it, Yes,
the teams at the bottom of the East are tanking,
much like they're tanking in the in the West. But
there's more tanking teams in the East Nick's Calves, Bulls
Hawks then there are in the West. There's a Sons,
the Grizzlies a year to now decide oh now will
tank mid season And while there's better depth of good
(48:06):
teams in the West. Look, I think the Lakers are good.
The Clippers appear to be playing for next year. They
obviously don't want to make the playoffs. The Mavericks kind
of same thing, right, Presenis is not gonna play this year.
The fact is that those four teams in the East,
they're better than the Nuggets, the thunder, the Blazers, the Rockets,
(48:27):
the Lakers like the East is the East is good
and four teams all being capable of winning the Eastern
Conference that's called depth. That that that doesn't happen often
in in in either the East or the West. That's
four like legit teams, and in a seven game series,
(48:48):
I would guess they be favored. You know, all four
of those teams, or at least three of them would
be favored probably over everybody in the West not named
the Golden State Warriors. Now, look, there's other reasons why
East and West will never be torn down, you know, Like,
are you really gonna make Celtic fans stay up till
ten o'clock just to watch a first round series playing
(49:08):
out in Portland? No, are you gonna really tear apart
historic rivalries of Eastern Conference teams against Eastern Conference tea
and Pacers Knicks Celtics Knicks in the playoffs, Like, no,
you're not doing that. The time zones are a problem,
and and oh yeah, by the way, um, all of
(49:29):
this thing eventually levels out. It just does. Eventually the
East will become as good, or better or deeper than
the West. Is how do I know this? Because that's
how it used to be until there was a shift
and it became all the teams in the West, that
massive freak out that we had at the end of
(49:49):
last season. Maybe we should tear this down so that
the best teams actually play the best teams. Like I
told you then, I'll tell you now that's a mistake.
And look at the teams now as they're comprised, not
just the records because the records aren't telling because they
don't play even schedules, but and and because there's more
teams they're taking the East than we're in the West.
Look at the rosters of those teams, they're all legit.
(50:11):
NBA insider Sam Amock joins the show of coming next.
Can the Lakers come back from the embarrassment of the
last couple of days? Plus who's the best team in

Fox Sports Radio. Trade deadline has come and gone, and
Anthony Davis is still a member of the Pelicans, and
(52:40):
there's all kinds of discussion as to why that is.
Was it the Pelicans ownership group to concerned with what's
going on with the Saints or the missed call in
the NC Championship game. Was it the Celtics just kind
of tweaking the Lakers into uh into creating a chasm
within their team which appears to be re and and
(53:01):
appears to exist. Or was the was just a trade
where the Lakers would not meet an astronomical asking price.
You know, whould know, Sam Amock, NBA insider from the
Athletic Why do you think Anthony Davis is still on
the Pelicans? Doug, thanks for having me as always, Um,
I think, listen, there's two layers to it. You know,
if the Lakers had the Celtics assets and their players,
(53:24):
I'm not gonna sit here and say that that there's
no way a deal would have gotten done. So part
of this is the greater context of what might be
available to New Orleans this summer. But I agree with
you and the way you set that up, and the
other part of this that it did get personal, and
I think New Orleans, like a lot of teams around
the league, fair or not, because I don't ever want
to pretend that we know all the nitty gritty, but
(53:46):
there is definitely a strong perception that Magic Johnson and
the Lakers operate however they want behind the scenes when
it comes to trying to get different star players that
come their way. And with the New Orleans situation, I
think certainly, you know, there were frustrations about alleged tampering,
and you know, rich Fall's involvement obviously represents both a
(54:06):
d and lebron and rather My sense of it is
that rather than going the conventional route for the Pelicans
and pushing the NBA to do an investigation, it does
you know, a lot of the intel is that they
decided to kind of go to the public route and
play some games in the media, and you know, we'll
see what tonight's game looks like. But the other night
in Indiana, we saw the ripple effect of that. Yeah,
(54:28):
I mean, how how do you how do you fix
when you know those rumors come out? I mean, first
of as the rumors that he could play he just wasn't.
He wasn't he could play in the playoffs or not
the regular season, and then hey, maybe he wants a
new coach, and then all those players and the idea
that Lebron has two okay, all of these guys true
or not. I mean, look, when when there's a fissure
(54:49):
between the coach and the front office, the coach and
the star player, the star player and the rest of
the team, Like, how do you repair that? We'll see?
You know what I mean? I mean, now, so know
they've got shared incentive to try to put this behind
them and make this playoff push. I just don't know
how possible. That's going to be because of some of
the fishers that you're talking about. You know, my contention
(55:10):
when it comes to Lebron would be, you know, you're right,
we don't know what he's telling magic and rough the
link of behind the scenes. But you know, my two
senses that I do think that it was probably a
misstep on Lebron's part to decide five six weeks ago
to talk about Anthony Davis publicly, because those guys in
that Lakers locker room, they're not stupid. They know how
this works. If you want a d and if you
(55:32):
say publicly that you would love to play with him,
then that means that you know you don't like the
rest of them got to go, and that's how this works.
And so I think it started there. It only got
louder as we got closer to the deadline. Uh. You know,
I've been in touch with some folks that are close
to all those guys in the locker room, and I
think the senses that it's never going to be the same,
especially when it comes to those young players who thought
(55:54):
they were part of the Lakers future. But you know,
now we get to see can they compartmentalize that and
try to play well these past couple of months. Same
amm from the athletic joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Let me play for you. What what what Lebron had
to say earlier today at shoot around and just get
your immediate reaction. Uh, here was Lebron earlier today. There's
(56:16):
nothing I need to give in this league that I
don't already have. So everything else you know for me
is just like I stone the cake. You know, I
love you know the process of everything that I go through,
UM to be able to compete every single night. UM
put teams the position to compete for championships. But there's
nothing I'm that I'm chasing or that I feel like
I need saying my career. UM, there's there's nothing I'm chasing.
(56:41):
Isn't there one thing that you're chasing? First of all,
it's a lie like he he wants to He wants
to be the all time scoring leader. So that's something
even if it's not winning, he wants to be the
all time scoring leader. Most of us know that. Well, listen,
here's to me the irony A couple of years ago,
Lee Jenkins, you know Famed Sports Illustrated writer friend of
(57:02):
mine who now happens to work for the Clippers in
their front office, sat down with Lebron and remember that's
when he told them, admitted to him that he was
chasing Michael Jordan's ghost, you know what I mean. And
that hasn't gone away, but his framing of this, and
you know, his pr approach, it reminds me of basically
every head coach in the NBA when they go into
(57:22):
this season and they talk behind the scenes to their
owner and their GM. They will project what they think
their team is capable of accomplishing. And guess what you do.
You know, you put that bar as low as possible
and then you can jump right over it and then
the optics are really good. To me, that's all Lebron's
doing here. If you keep telling people you've got nothing
left to prove, but then you keep succeeding, then your
(57:44):
legacy gets even greater. Doug Gotli show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Okay, let's let's let's get up the Bay
where the best team in the NBA resides and fresh
off a thrashing of the San Antonio Spurs, Kevin durant
Um met with the media after ducking them for three days,
and uh, he was quite terse. Here's what he had
(58:06):
to say after a win last night. I have nothing
to do with the Knicks. I don't know who traded porzingis.
They got nothing to do with me. I'm trying to
play basketball. Yeah, come in here every day, asked me
about free agency, asked my teammates, my coaches, who riled
up the fans about it. Let us play basketball. That's
all I'm saying. And now when I want to talk
(58:26):
to y'all as a problem with me, come on, man,
grow up. I called out Ethan Strauss by name, Um,
what's your take on? And and in a in an
effort to not be defensive, because we're all members of
the media, what's your honest take on what k D
had to say? Uh, I'm not a youthe fan. I mean,
I've always enjoyed Kevin. Um My. My thing here is that,
(58:50):
for one, I think it was around nine days that
he didn't talk to the press. For two, the idea
that he gets asked about free agency every day or
even close is a complete misnomer. That's kind of Admittedly
what's driving me nuts about the narrative today because I'm
in that environment in the Bay a lot, and people
don't ask him about free agency. It's just a complete fabrication.
(59:10):
Now the next thing, and this is something I tweeted
earlier today. I can sympathize to what it's like to
be in his position because where everybody's talking about you
all the time. I think that is the mistake that
Kevin continues to make, is that he listens to everything
and he reads everything. He is, you know, he is
as I don't like the phrase thin scan. I think
(59:31):
it's too simplistic, but he is, you know, as aware
and reactionary to what gets said about him as any
NBA player who I have ever been around. And I
think that's a mistake. Now, some people around him say
that he's become productive in a way where he can
channel that and just not let it affect him. We're
seeing right now he doesn't like it when he gets
(59:51):
talked about. But this is a seven billion dollar NBA
business where teams like the Knicks are making their decisions
based on very real tell right now about what he
might do. So it's a story. It's not gonna stopping
a story because he got upset at the press conference
and you know, I think there's probably a smoother way
for him to handle him. Doug gotlip show here on
(01:00:12):
Fox Sports Radio that said, there's the the working rumor
that he's going to the Knicks. My contention is and
and my defense of KD would be in reality. And
I don't know if you've ever been in this position
when you you know, I mean you switch jobs recently,
right where people ask you, somebody asks you, and then
(01:00:33):
like two or three months, things change, your feelings change,
the jobs themselves change. Right. Um, you know if somebody
would ask you years ago when you're at USA today,
like will you ever leave USA today for an upstart website?
Like no, I'm good as the USA today And they're like, well,
it's the world is different now. Um. Does he have
a point in terms of the I agree with you?
(01:00:54):
He he does listen way too much, he's too active
on social media and it becomes an echo chamber of opinions. Um.
But but does he have a point in that people
want answers to something which it's an unanswerable thing because
nothing he can say will actually satisfy anybody. I honestly don't, Doug.
I really don't think people even want answers. That's my
(01:01:15):
whole thing. I don't think anybody's asking him for an answer.
Draymond is about the only one asking him for an answer.
And that's a real internal type of thing, you know.
And I can't share everything on this front, but you
know what comes to mind is I just there's part
of me is that Kevin needs to talk to some
of the people in his circle as well, because guess
why some of these teams have the thoughts that they have,
(01:01:36):
because his circle is not as tight as Lebron's. For example,
I give Lebron a lot of credit. Last year, Yes,
we heard that the Lakers were a strong possibility, but
as somebody who interacts with Lebron circle a lot, I
can tell you last year they were buttoned up. They
didn't sit there and say, hey, don't write this, but
it's probably gonna be Lakers like. And I'm not saying
that's exactly what's happening right now with Kevin group, but
(01:01:58):
when you have other teams telling you, you know, behind
the scenes, that well, this is the message we're getting.
Some of this stuff is being fueled, you know, from
his side, and then it's you know, it's easy to
make the media, the messenger, that the kind of the
enemy here. But there's another layer of this whole thing
that's not even getting talked about. Doug gotlip show here
on Fox Sports Trader. That's the voice of Sam Amick,
(01:02:19):
who covers the NBA for the athletic um lost in
the A d conversation is remember the last couple off
season and be like, hey, we should go one through sixteen.
Some people said, we forget about the East. The East
is so weak. Lebron and and and one or two
other guys can dominate. Look at the additions today to
the East. The Raptors got better this last offseason, adding Kauai.
(01:02:42):
Now they add marcasoul Um. The I think that the
Bucks now only adding Mirror TIChE but Brook Lopez in
the off season they clearly and getting rid of Jupbari
Parker little edition by some they got better. The Sixers
add to Bias Harris, like in the top four in
the East, better than take away the Warriors. Anybody in
the West. Yeah, I mean Denver is the only one
(01:03:03):
that I feel like we're kind of overlooking here. I
really like the Nuggets and what they've been doing, and
so you know, I'm gonna throw them in that group.
But it is starting to look like you know, I mean,
Houston played a lot better, but they're certainly not the
rockets that last year. And the top of the East
is is pretty I think it's gonna be a blast.
It's gonna be a lot of fun to watch. Philly
in particular, is gonna be I think, you know, it's
(01:03:25):
like a fork in the road. Can they get the
chemistry together and maximize the talent they now have in
that locker room, because once you're talking about you know,
Simmons and bad and JJ Reddick and Jimmy Butler and
Tobias um and and you know, I think that's a
great mix. I love the Marcus Ault, the Toronto elements.
You know. So it is it's big time moves in
the East. Uh, it's a little painful. I have to
(01:03:47):
imagine to be lebron tonight. You go into the you know,
one of my colleagues, Joe Barden, had tweeted that you
go into to Boston, the place where you you know,
won a game seven last year in the conference finals
to get to your eighth straighte NBA Finals, and now
you're kind of looking around you know, wondering if you
can make it into the playoffs, and the East is
now kind of the place where everybody's trying to to
(01:04:07):
grab that throne now that you're gone. So it should
be fun and it'll be nice to have conceivably an
NBA finals that's not an afterthought where you know you
might have the two best teams. Yeah. No, it's gonna
be fascinating, fascinating uh to watch uh Doug otlip show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Last thing, Um, it's really
the hardened thing is really hard, really difficult because he's
(01:04:31):
been great and they've been winning more games because of it.
But pace of play is faster than any time in
the modern era. He's shooting a ton of three pointers.
We know he doesn't play much defense, um and and
and other teams are playing at a great pace as well.
So it's hard to compare stats. What do you think
of how James Harden has so statistically dominated the past
(01:04:54):
month and a half in the NBA. I mean, I'm
not gonna take anything away from it's been wonderful, you
know what I mean. I want those people that for
a long time. It's being honest, you know, it's not
fun to watch guys shoot free throws. It's not it's
not necessarily fun to sit there and have to study
replays of the double step back and whether or not
it was a travel. But James's body of work, independent
(01:05:15):
of those things, for me anyway, has has completely overwhelmed
any of the little grapes you might have about how
he gets it done. And he's been He's been amazing.
I do think though, you know, I think part of
what you're alluding to is that the narrative is going
to come into play here. You know, how well are
the Rocket's gonna play down the stretch in terms of
whether or not he's going to be the m v
P again. Um nice is right there. You know. The
(01:05:37):
Bucks continue to not only win games, but even when
you break down the numbers and the metrics, you know,
look like the most dominant team in the NBA and
then includes the Warriors, you know, And we need to
not lose sight of some of the historical context of
what he is doing too, because when you're coming in
and I'm cheating here and looking at it, you know,
twenty seven point twelve boards, uh, you know, and just
(01:05:58):
filling up the statueet the way he does six sis,
you know, and not only that, but having the best
records that can't be overlooked. So I think it could
be a fun you know, last couple of months in
the v few rays. Well, it's been a fun last
couple of days unless you remember of the Lakers. Uh,
thanks so much, Thanks so much. You can't wait to
read your stuff tomorrow. In the Athletic Y's Sam Amic
NBA insider Sam, thanks so much for joining us. Thanks,
(01:06:20):
I appreciate it. Don't be that guy in the room

know US's perfection, Dan Buyer. Far from it, Doug. But
(01:06:40):
we've got a lot going on. Well, wrap up the
NBA stuff in just a second. But there's other big
news happening in the world of sports. First Housman Trophy
winning quarterback Kyler Murray is on the official list of
participants schedule to attend the NFL Scouting Combined in Indianapolis,
which starts Tuesday, February six, and now a lot can
happen before now and then, including spring training. The A's
(01:07:01):
begins spring training next week. Position players due to report
a week from tomorrow, but as of right now, Kyler
Murray is on the list to participate in the Scouting Combine.
In baseball, the Phillies acquired All star catcher j T
rail Mudo in a deal with the Marlins. Four players
going to Miami, according to the Athletic. In golf first round,
the A T and T Pebble Beach Pro am Phil
(01:07:22):
Mickelson near the top of the leaderboard currently at four
under par, one shot back of the lead, as is
Dustin Johnson and Jordan's Speed all in its high for
seven right now five for excuse me, six players including
Jason Day, having a share of the lead at five
under par. The seventies Sixers are sending the first overall
pick in the twenties seventeen draft, Mark l Folks to
the Orlando Magic. Marc Gasol on his way from Memphis
(01:07:45):
to Toronto. And as you talked about Pelicans trading Nicolamerititch
to the Milwaukee Bucks. As for the Lakers, yeah, they
didn't get Anthony Davis, but they could get Carmelo Anthony.
ESPN says the team is expected to consider signing the
free agent forward after today's trade line. Nick set to
release Wesley Matthews is gonna sign a deal with the
Indiana Pacers. Will be back to the Gottlieb Show in
(01:08:06):
ten seconds. But first still word from farmers. From a
dog accidentally flooding a living room to a dog taking
a joy ride, we've covered it. Talked to farmers. We
know a thing or two because we've seen a thing
or two. We are farmers underwritten my Farmers truck fire insurance,
exchanges and affiliates products not available in every state. So
(01:08:29):
here's what happened last night. Always entertaining on social media,
and as much as we were gonna be, we can
be critical of KD for you know, being on social
media too much. Um I would be critical of the
last two posts for Lebron James. Two nights ago they
(01:08:50):
got beaten, that they were beaten by the Indiana Pacers
by was at forty one points and he did score
his thirty second point and then it I GD on
his account. Now I'm willing to believe that somebody else
might have posted that, like, do I think that he's
(01:09:11):
posting all time scoring leaders with himself fit? Now, that's
probably somebody else controlling his But that is one of
those deals where it's still up and you almost you
almost want to post point out, Hey, wasn't our best
effort tonight, but still a great honor to be among
these guys. Didn't talk about the fact that they got
(01:09:32):
eviscerated and no one's sitting next to him on the bench.
Then last night, Harrison Barnes was traded and during the
game they acted in Dallas as if he was traded
during the game. This is what it said underneath that
had Harrison Barnes on the bench toe around his neck,
reportedly traded to the Sacramento Kings for Justin Jackson and
Zach Randolph King James's Instagram account. So let me guess
(01:09:55):
this is cool because they had to do what was
best for the franchise, right, traded this man when he
was literally playing the game and had zero idea. I'm
not knocking who traded him, because it's a business and
you have to do what you feel is best. But
I just want this narrative to start and get real change.
And not when a player wants to be trade or
leaves a franchise that he's selfish or ungrateful player. But
(01:10:16):
when they do trade, you release wave cut, et cetera.
Best for the team. I'm okay with both, honestly, truly,
am just call a spade a spade. Duane Wade Uh
says talk that talk CP three Uh straight up. I'm
here to tell you Lebron is just too woke. This
is too This is a perfect example of social media
(01:10:39):
go wrong. We I think we thought. I think we
thought that if we had video of something, when something happened,
it would clear everything up for us. Like, man, if
they we listen, we have the the bruder footage of
John F. Kennedy being assassinated. I can't. I like, look,
(01:11:02):
it looks to me as if there's multiple shooters. But
there's government experts that have proven beyond a reasonable doubt
that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I don't believe in
the magic bullet, so the magic bullet theory rings cold
to me. But again, like you have video of it,
(01:11:24):
it should tell you the truth, and it doesn't. It doesn't.
It's like, um, remember that protest between the Native American
gentleman and the high school kids from Kentucky and how
when you saw the video, like, man, those kids they're
wearing them, you know, maga hats, and they're harassing this guy.
(01:11:47):
It's an awful look for white America. Like here's some
white high school kids standing and staring at him face
to face. And then of course you get more video
perspective and you get to what, actually, those kids are
just kind of hanging out and there are actually many
of them were respectful of it, and it was the
Native American man who approached I just I don't mean, like,
that's not what the show needs to divulge into. But
(01:12:07):
the point is that if you saw the initial video,
like all of us, you're like, what, what's the matter
with these kids? They all need to be smacked. And
then you see the whole VideA and you're like, well,
it's not really what it was portrayed to be previously.
Here's how it relates to Lebron. Paul Pierce said that
Harrison Barnes knew a trade to the Kings Kings was
in the work prior to the game, and he still
(01:12:29):
wanted to play for the Mavericks on Wednesday. So, first,
Lebron has it wrong in terms of Harrison Barnes did
not get traded unbeknownst to him in the middle of
a game. That's why Harrison Barnes tweeted out what an
instagramed out a very heartfelt note afterwards like Hey, this
is what's going on. We think it's gonna go through.
(01:12:50):
I still want to play because Harrison Barnes is a
really good dude. Secondly, this idea that players and owners
are equals or management and players are like, that's not
the way it works if you wanted to work that
way on your own team. Michael Jordan's is an owner,
(01:13:13):
he's a former superstar. He's in many people's circles, mine
included the greatest player of all time. Do you think
he believes this that you should be on equal footing,
that players should be allowed to just not play because
they want to force a trade. The reality of it is, yes,
(01:13:34):
trades do happen for the betterment of a team. And
and also like, look, Anthony Davis, I don't think Anthony
Davis is being terribly disloyal for wanting out. He's been
there for seven years, but he did his dad didn't
have to come out and say that the Boston Celtics
were disloyal when he never played for the Celtics. Isaiah
(01:13:55):
Thomas barely played for him. He didn't know anything about
Isaiah Thomas getting hurting his hip. And you're the one
calling the Celtics disloyal like that. You're the one like, look,
you got a kid guy who's under contract for a
year and a half. If you didn't want to stay
there that long, you didn't have to sign that long contract.
And then if you're in the last year of your contract,
(01:14:16):
it doesn't matter. They're going to trade you it to
somebody who wants you for a short period time. If
you're there, gonna be bought out and you get you
get to pick where you go, or you're gonna get
trade to a playoff team where you got a chance
to make a better name for yourself. But this this
just idea, This is what we what we do. We
think that with thinto college athletes are the same as
college coaches. Man, they should be given the same freedom. No,
(01:14:37):
they shouldn't. The college athlete isn't responsible for the rest
of the team, for the rest of the program, for
the athletic department, the coach is, and it's the same
here in the NBA. The individual player isn't responsible for
the rest of the team. For the rest of the franchise,
the GM and the owner of the president are. So
(01:15:01):
you don't have equal rights under the law, even if
in the real world you have equal rights under the law. Sorry,
that's just the reality of it, all right. We got
a lot to get to. Chris Carter thinks the Lakers
are no longer a competitive team. Give you my thoughts. Next.
(01:15:24):
From a heart edible loos landing on a car to
a load of concrete falling on one, we've covered it.
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers under
written my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products
unavailable in every state. Hey, it's tax season. Now ask yourself.
(01:15:51):
Are you getting a big refund this year? Tax Layer

and they guarantee your maximum refund. He you love this program,
you can show it by going to tax layer dot

(01:16:12):
Sports Radio every day, this time we play for you
a portion of a previous show on Fox Sports One
and Fox Sports Radio. We call it and now Valentine's
Day is Thursday week from today, February four. What are
you getting for the one that you loved? When? What
gift you getting? Say four and a half carrot total
weight diamond hard pendant. Now, just to show Cubadu's boss
(01:16:37):
this Valentine's Day at Hellsberg Diamonds. Here's Chris Carter on
first things first, talking about the Lakers and what's happened
this past couple of weeks. That's the biggest problem here
with the voter Lakers was Lebron getting hurt those eighteen
games that he missed, nineteen games that he missed. Because
we liked the Lakers the way they were progressing the
younger players even with the injuries, Like we can recover
(01:16:58):
if if Rondo was hurt, if long as Lebron was there.
But because of their position now being out of the playoffs,
but there's more pressure because Lebron got hurt. If they hadn't,
we wouldn't. We thought that this might take till the summer.
We just wanted the Lakers getting the playoffs, be a
top four seed, potentially win a series. Those were the
questions we were asking ourselves a couple of months ago.
(01:17:19):
That's so what changed a couple of weeks ago. That's
the most interesting part of this is we we spent
a lot of time speculating about the Lakers, about Lebron
up until ten days ago, eleven days ago, last week Monday,
nobody was saying if the Lakers don't trade for Anthony
Davis this year, it's a failure. Look, I'd love to
(01:17:40):
say it's just Lebron being heard clearly derailed this season
in concert with it being a hurt Kyle Kuzum is
a handful of games. They just don't have enough offense
without the two of them. In addition to that, Rondo
has heard at first now Alonzo ball is hurt and
mixed in mixed into that, like, look, you're down three
starters in the NBA. Come on, especially when one's your
(01:18:04):
best player and one of the best couple of players
in the history of the sport, Like, yeah, that's they's
not gonna work out well for you, Um, but there's
plenty of time to get it back, plenty of time.
If in the process of him being hurt, there wasn't
the well he could play, but it's not the playoffs
(01:18:25):
or the you know, he could play, but he doesn't
love playing for Luke, or the Anthony Davis saga which
kind of ostracized Lebron James for the rest of the team.
They went from a team that was great defensively, really
connected in terms of how they're playing, how they're reacting,
simply missing guys that could make shots. That's really all
(01:18:47):
the to a team and utter and complete chaos. That's
who they are, utter and complete chaos. Now they made
some smart additions. I don't know how good Mike Mascal is,
but at least it's stretch five, something they haven't had um.
I don't know how good Reggie Bullock could be in
terms of stretching the floor and making shots. But you know,
(01:19:09):
Cantavious Callwell, Pope looks good on paper till you see
him against the legit team and then he just doesn't
have it. I think they got better, although they probably
overspent to get Mike moscala Um and getting rid of
Michael Beasley is the smart thing to do. Clearly that
that relationship had turned between he and Luke Walton, but
between Luke not being on sound footing polinkin Magic possibly
(01:19:33):
being at odds um Lebron and Rich Paul pushing for
a guy that they couldn't get, separating himself and the
rest of the team. Like the whole thing is ugly
and I don't know if it's recoverable. The only saving
grace is basketball players. Many of them are used to this,
Many of them have come up in the life of chaos.
(01:19:54):
Maybe of them have fought back before, and this could
be a galvanizing moment. That's what I thought the other
night would be. But then they lost my forty. It
lost my forty forty. Yes, Ryan Music, your thoughts. Doesn't
it feel like the Lakers? You know, they signed Lebron
and everything was like, hey, you know, we're this is
just a long term plan. We're taking our time, kind
(01:20:17):
of like you know, the secret to good barbecue is
when you smoke meat, it takes a long time, right,
like some guys who are super serious, it takes like
twelve hours. And then what the Lakers did was like
they panicked. They took the brisket off the smoker, threw
it in the microwave and thought everything could still turn out.
The same and instead now the briskets all chewy and dry,
(01:20:38):
like they just like totally as soon as they found
out that Anthony Davis was available, they completely panicked and
felt like it had to happen. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
this is what happened. When you know, it's like you're
it's more like you're dating a girl and you think
and she thinks you're gonna take her to the prom,
and then some better looking chick ends up, you know,
(01:20:58):
being on the market, and so now of a sudden
you started kind of aggling towards her, and she's like
the girl like, whoa wait, I'm not good enough for
you now, Like you know what happened. Told, it's very reasonable,
reasonable human feelings to have. We think of players as
robots and they're not, and it doesn't and when we
get this, well that's a younger guy, isn't He's just younger.
(01:21:22):
They were all in, but especially the younger guys. They
were all in on the Lebron thing, and they thought
Lebron was all in on them until Anthony Davis came
along the better brisket. And that's what the fox said,
Um boy, I think it's been an actually a fascinating
trade deadline day because we're paying so much tension to
(01:21:42):
Kevin Rant, so much tension to Lebron, so much tens
to Anthony Davis. Marcus al got traded. Like, here's a
former Defensive Player of the Year. He's down with the
Toronto Raptors. Nicola Merritage, Mamber. How good he was last
year in the playoffs with the Pelicans. He's now a
member of the Milwaukee Bucks. And of course yesterday to
buy his Harris moved to the to the Philadelphia's seventies.
And then there's the Celtics are just sitting there. We're
(01:22:05):
still probably the best roster if they can get Gordon
Hayward going, But maybe that that's a that's a chore
for next year or the following year. Does Kevin Durant
have the right have the Yeah, Does he have to
have a right to be mad at the media. We'll
discuss next in The Doug Gotlip Show. What Up Doug
(01:22:25):
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. M m m m m
m m m m m m m. The Dug Gotli
Show is brought to you by farmers and farmers. We've
seen almost everything, so we know how to cover almost
anything when it's game time, having experienced player help you
stay ahead of the game, put their experience in play
at Farmers dot com. Farmers, I'm fairly unique in this dale. Okay,
(01:22:51):
I'm I'm fairly unique. Um, you can call me out
and I can still process whatever anger you have or
whatever you don't like about me, and I can still
evaluate you as you. But I don't think that most
of my media brethren have that. Matt Patricia is the
perfect example that, right. Matt Patricia called out some media guys,
one guy for you know, like sit up when you
(01:23:13):
ask a question, talking about being on time and things
like that. And because he got onto the media, the
media will never just you know, whether he's practicing outside
or how he ends handed himself, for they just all
over him. And I don't know if the Matt Patricia
thing works. But I also think that he was brought
in to completely change the culture of the place. And
(01:23:36):
first years are really hard. First years are really hard,
and he wants to be a Belichick and we'll see
maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But I guess his
mistake was calling out the media because the media is
now going to be extra critical of him. I think
the same thing is gonna happen with Kevin Durant. It
(01:23:58):
should be pointed out that the war are yours dominated
the Spurs last night dominated. So instead of coming into
the press conferences, smile on his face and telling everybody
how great it was to play well against the great organization,
Kevin Durant had to answer questions about why you've been
duck in the media. Here are his answers. I have
nothing to do with the Nicks. I don't know who
traded poor zingis. They got nothing to do with me.
(01:24:20):
I'm trying to play basketball. Y'all come in here every day,
asked me about free agency, asked my teammates, my coaches,
who rilled up the fans about it. Let us play basketball.
That's all I'm saying. And now when I don't want
to talk to y'all as a problem with me, come on, man,
grow up. Doug Alias show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
(01:24:44):
there's there's two sides of this thing. Two sides of
this thing. Side one is the anti Durant thing. Hey dude,
you're listening to social media too much. Hey dude, We're
just doing our job. Hey, bud, if you weren't a
free agent all the time, we wouldn't have to ask
you about where you're going. If you didn't have a
US friend uh Enriched Kleiman who lived in New York
and people saying you're going New York, we wouldn't ask
(01:25:05):
you about this all the time. But all these things happen.
What do you expect us to do? And then the
second it gets hard, you duck and dodge. Just even
though you live on social media and you comment if
you're you're gonna comment to people who are fourteen years
old that are you know, sitting in their house tweeting
on their computer, you won't talk to the legit members
of the media that that's not right. We're here to
(01:25:28):
do a job. You're here to do a job. We
have to find a way to coexist. But if you're
pro Kevin Durant like he, it's not wrong. You are
asking other people answers to a question for answers to
a question that they really don't know. And that's because
it's a good chance Kevin Durant really doesn't know. And
even if you gave you the honest answer one, it
(01:25:49):
might not be the answer you want to That answer
can change. And three three, And this is maybe the
most important thing might not be the answer you want.
That answer can change, and there is actually no right
answer to it, because so many others have said something
and change their mind and been criticized for it. So
(01:26:15):
which side of this thing are you on? Yeah? I
kind of I get it. I do actually get I
actually understand, actually understand both sides to this one. And
the challenge to media members is can you judge Kevin
(01:26:35):
Rant on a fair scale? And the answer so far
has been no. Here's how I know. Was Kevin Rant
the best player in the last two NBA Finals? Unequivocally?
The answer is yes. Lebron was great in Game one.
If you remember early on the series, Katie was not
great early the series, but overall, he was better down
(01:26:57):
the stretch. He was better in the second half, and
he made essentially the series winning shot in Cleveland in
Game three in the same spot two consecutive years in
a row. And you know who was assigned to guarding him,
that's right, Lebron James. He was better in the second
half of Lebron his team won both times. And if
we were just fair about it, we just watched the
two of them compete against the other, you be like,
(01:27:17):
you know, Lebron's great. I think Kevin rant was actually
better in the second half when it mattered the most,
especially if you look at both series combined. That's why
you won two m v ps. But just like the media,
I don't think can get out of their own biases
in way and simply evaluate him based upon whether or
(01:27:39):
not his critique is right, because they're personalizing the he's
calling out the media thing, Oh, that means you're calling
out me for doing my job. The same can be
said for we can't process. We're so stuck in the well.
You know, they had a seventy three win team he joined. Well, okay,
it's a seventy three win team, but half the teams
in the in the in the Western Conference were tanking
(01:27:59):
that year. They also had Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut,
who never played again for the Warriors. That's two starters
they lost. In order to get him, they had to
change their style and change their roster and add inferior
players because they couldn't pay them. Now they're paying Kevin
(01:28:19):
Durant and because we carry the bias of hey, he
almost won in Oklahoma City, and he joined a seventy
three win team that eliminated him in Oklahoma City, instead
of just evaluating him based upon was he actually awesome?
And the answer is yes, he's been awesome. Like even
the perception of this year, Oh, Steph Curry is better.
(01:28:40):
Steph Curry is not better than Kevin Durant. He has
he has this ability to be more explosive at times
offensively hitting shots. But Kevin Duran averages more, assists, more rebounds,
um shoots a shoots a lower percentage from three and
a slightly lower percentage from the free throw line. And
(01:29:00):
he is far and away a much He is much
more dynamic defensive player than staff curious. But but even
now you you don't want to see that, you don't
want you don't judge him as such. So I don't
love the the overuse of social media, the over dramatization
(01:29:21):
of it. It's not the end of the world. You
can take the high road. But Durant told us he
didn't want to do that anymore. He specifically told us
that specifically told us that this was the year that
he was not going to give a you know what,
Ryan Music, are you team? Media or Team Durant in
this one. Um Man, that's tough. I guess you can't.
(01:29:46):
You can be both, Like I'm kind of both. Like
I understand, I understand media guys going like, look, dude,
I'm doing my job. But I also understand like we're
beating up a story where there's no real answer until July. Yeah,
that that's where I tend to come down on this
is like if there was I guess the report was
from Ethan Strauss about why people sort of think he's
on the way out. So I understand why the question
(01:30:08):
needs to be addressed, but yeah, I mean, there does
come a certain point where you continue to ask the
same questions over and over again because you kind of
fall back. I'm like, well, you know, I'm just trying
to ask the question. It's like, okay, well that answer
won't come about until July. And so if he says
one thing or another, there's so much that can happen
(01:30:30):
between now in July where he could want to stay,
then want to leave, then want to stay again, then
want to you know, like so many different things can
change between now and then, Like, how can you expect
him to have the answer right now? It's a great point.
You can't write. And and even if whatever the answer
is now doesn't mean it will be the answer, then
(01:30:50):
that's that's the big part. So um, I'm I'm, I'm
personally fascinated by this, this idea that we have to
know before we know. And and look, I'm just as
guilty as anybody. I want to know before I know,
just like anybody wants to know before they know. But
(01:31:12):
um sometimes sometimes things change. We want to know what's
gonna happen in the next election, we want to know
what you know. Like all this stuff we want to know,
I don't know. It leads me to understanding Katie. I mean,
not agree with everything he does. I don't love a
lot about him, but I do get it. I appreciate
(01:31:37):
the fact that he's trying to point out how it's
bs that guys want. I want answers already. I want
to read tea leaves, and sometimes those tea leaves don't
actually exist. They don't exist. Um Man, this is funny.
You know, somebody just sent me. They just sent me
(01:31:59):
a video from me playing in an au event with
with Tony Gonzalez. I gotta I gotta watch these things
so we just sent it to me. NBA insider Chris
Mannox joins the show. Next, the deadline has past, who's

Untucket replaced that sloppy smock look of an untucked dress

That's untrue. Untucket shirts fit perfectly no matter what the

(01:34:14):
here on Fox Sports Radio. M m m m m mmmmm.
I'm kind of excited to see the Lakers play like
they're they're all staying right. They got rid of Zoo Botch,
they added Reggie Bullock, they got rid of Uh, they
got rid of Spee who I liked, I think everybody liked,
(01:34:35):
and they got rid of um Michael Beasley. Who and
they got one open roster spot. Who gets that one?
The mellow thing I don't know they're gonna add Carmelo Anthony.
Is that really gonna help him? He Lakers Celtics tonight.
Tell me there's gonna be a better watch than that.
(01:34:56):
And you got Lebron saying, take a listen. This is
one Lebron said early year. Today this is Lebron James
shoot around. And I think he was asked about, you know,
not landing Anthony Davis and whether or not he's frustrated.
Take a listen. There's nothing I need to give in
his league that I don't already have. So everything else,
you know, for me is just like just icing on
(01:35:16):
the cake. And I love, you know, the process of
everything that I go through UM to be able to
compete every single night. UM put teams the position to
compete for championships. But there's nothing I'm that I'm chasing
or that I feel like I need saying, my career
not chasing anything. Nothing I needed in my career like
either either you're completely full of you know what, which
(01:35:39):
is possible, or this idea of being humble and content
with the success of your past and okay with whatever
the future lies like. That does not sound like Michael
Jeffrey Jordan. That does not sound like Larry Joe Bird.
That does not sound like Urban Match Johnson or or
Kobe Bean Bryant, does not Chris Mannox joins us here
(01:36:00):
on the Doug got Leave Show on Fox Sports Radio.
I got a lot of other things that maybe more pertinent. Um,
but what's your what's your reaction to Lebron saying I
ain't chased anything. I'm kind I'm kind of at piece it.
I don't really believe him, and because he's so competitive,
and I just think he's kind of saying this because
(01:36:22):
it it'll be in kind of a defiant way. I
believe that deep down, Lebron absolutely is frustrated by, you know,
the lack of the ability to get Anthony Davis and
his inability right now to compete for championships. And Lebron
is a very smart guy. He knows that it's going
to be challenging in the next two years for the
(01:36:43):
Lakers to assemble a championship level roster around him. So
I think he's just kind of saying that to deflect
a little bit. All right, So what happens tonight with
the Lakers? Like they come out there. They made a
couple of trades. They got Mike Mascala, who's a you know,
good teammate, good shooter. Obviously they needed a stretch five,
although I thought they paid too much for him. They
(01:37:04):
get Reggie Bullock, who's a who's another guy who can
shoot the basketball. So they've added bench shooting, which is
what they needed. But there was I mean, look, I
can't think of anything more embarrassing than the three chairs
between him and the rest of the team and the performance,
the egg they laid in Indie. What do you think
happens tonight against the Celtics. Well, I mean, it's gonna
(01:37:25):
be as as hostile a regular season crowd as they're
gonna see. And you know, look, people in Boston are
operating like today was a big victory. I mean they
Anthony Davis wasn't traded. That's a major win for the Celtics.
And you saw the crowd chance in Indiana. I'm guessing
we're gonna hear a lot more of that in in
(01:37:46):
Boston tonight when Ingram goes to the line at Couzma
ghost to the line. I'm guessing we're gonna hear a
lot more of that. And I don't know, it's less
to meet Doug. It's less about you know, what happens
specifically tonight, but how does this team rally over the
final third or quarter of the season. Because you know,
those young players, and I talked about this a little
bit earlier in the day, those young players have to
(01:38:08):
believe because of you know what Lebron said about one
day playing with Anthony Davis and the connection Lebron's agency
has with Anthony Davis. They have to believe on some
level that Lebron tried to trade them and and doesn't
want and wants to play with somebody else. And you know,
for young guys, you know, I would imagine that would
be pretty pretty frustrating. So how do you piece this
(01:38:31):
together over the final quarter of the season to make
the playoffs. I just think that's that's a bigger picture
story than just what happens tonight. Um, why did the
Pelicans not make the trade? Well, I mean they're they're
the biggest nosed overriding reason and I have been reporting
this for days like that. I knew they didn't want
to make a trade, and the thing that that would
(01:38:53):
have been the wild card would have been at the
Lakers said four first three swap rights and just some
kind of wacky all in type of deal. They never
really did that. They submitted some pretty good offers, but
they never went all in. They never gave the Pelicans reason,
and maybe there would be no no deal that would
give them reason, But Felican has never had any real
reason to wit not to not wait for July one,
(01:39:15):
when the draft order can shake out and most importantly
when Boston can get into the mix. So that that's
that's part of it. But I can tell you, Doug
from from talking to people in and around the New
Orleans organization, the way this was handled didn't sit well
with them at all. I mean, they were bracing for
the likelihood that Anthony Davis was going to reject their
(01:39:35):
contract extension offered this summer. What they didn't expect and
certainly didn't appreciate, was the trade request and how public
it became, turning this into a three ring circus, you know,
for the last two weeks. So I think that if
there was you know, I think that siphon to waste
any any motivation there might have been to get a
(01:39:57):
deal done prior to the deadline. Doug got him show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, Kevin Durant came out
a little swing after a couple of days off of
speaking with the media. What was your reaction to what
Kad had to send. I mean, Katie and I love
Kevin Durant like you know he is, and you appreciate
him as a player because he's great as a media member.
(01:40:18):
I've always appreciated him because he doesn't give you stock answers.
He actually thinks before he speaks, and will be articulate
and and thoughtful and and and just really give you
something rather than kind of the bull teams played hard
that that some athletes tend to give you. All that
being said, I mean, I don't I don't know what
he expects. I mean, when you sign those one year contracts,
(01:40:39):
you give yourself as a player a tremendous amount of
power and leverage within that organization. The consequence of that
is that everybody wants to talk about what you're gonna
do at the end of that contract. And when a
big market team liked the Knicks, which everybody knows has
eyes for Kevin Durant makes the moves that they did there,
this is going to be what happens. It's just is
(01:41:01):
there's no stopping it. And you know, I think Kevin
Durant really knows that, and like he he made the
situation that much worse. Doug by not talking immediately afterwards.
If he had sat down, like if the Beat writers
come over after the Coursingist trade and started to ask
about this, and Kevin could have said, guys, I don't
meany do with them, I'm trying to win here, that
that probably would have been the end of it. But
there was this kind of slow build and the story
(01:41:23):
became more about Kevin Durant not talking than what Kevin
Durant was gonna say. So the whole thing was just let'
let's say it was easily preventable, um, than than what
actually happened. Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Who's the best team in the East? Now, good question? UM,
I don't know, I really don't. Um. You look at
(01:41:44):
things on paper, and that's one thing, but as we've
seen with Boston this year, on papers, meaningless like it
takes time to to glue a team together. And Ken
Philadelphia incorporate Uh, Tobias Harris who was the who was
the Clippers leading scorer, who was averaging sixty shots per game?
Can they incorporate him as a fourth option into that mix? Um?
(01:42:05):
Did they get enough guys off their bench? I like
the I like the cut ties with Marquel Folks. I
like the James Ennis deal. But how does Brett Brown
kind of paste this together over twenty five or so game?
Same thing, Uh, you know, to a lesser degree with Toronto.
I mean, Marcusol You're not shaking up the roster to
go and get him, but you've got to figure out
a way to get him into that mix. I do
(01:42:25):
love what Milwaukee has done and continues to do. John
Horst is sneaky a great executive, he really is. I
mean just putting these pieces around Janice in the off season,
with the Lopez acquisition and now just more shooters like
Meritage being added to that mix. Um, they have done
exactly what you need to do when you have a
star like Janice running things. I I agree with you
(01:42:48):
even getting rid of Jabari Parker. I thought was it
was a smart was a smart move right like Parker
can score, but he gives up he gives up them
a money as he gets you know, like even parting
ways with with that one, uh going back to the
off season, was that you know, was was an incredibly
adept move. Um, what about the Celtics who the other
team tonight? It's obvious they're not gonna They're not gonna
(01:43:09):
get the Gordon Hayward that they thought they were gonna
get when he signed as the big free agent name
of two years ago. But Kyrie ever since kind of
calling out his teammates, has played at a magnificent level.
But they've had some bumps in that they've had some uh,
some dust ups on the sideline, they've had some uneven performances.
Where are we with the Celtics, Well, they're still not
(01:43:32):
the juggernaut that we thought we were going to see
at the start of the season. And I agree with you.
I do think Hayward can eventually be the guy he
once was, but it's not gonna happen this season. He's
just there's too much to get past for that to happen.
What I've liked, and I've seen obviously a lot of
Celtic games. What I've liked is that guys are starting
to get more comfortable with their roles. Look at Jalen Brown,
(01:43:53):
for example, who really struggled the first couple of months
of the season. You look at his numbers the last
month and a half, and the eyeball test confirms that
he's been excellent just on both ends of the floor,
looking more comfortable in that second unit role. Uh, you know,
they they've just been playing some really good offensive basketball late.
Like a benchmark for them, for example, is thirty assists.
(01:44:13):
If they get thirty assists, they're not gonna lose many
games because they're already a top five defensive type team.
And when they're passing the ball, and that didn't happen
much in the first, you know, third of the season,
half of the season, but when they're moving the ball,
they're downright dangerous offensively because of how many guys on
that team that could score. So when they get to
that thirty assists mark, uh, there's not a team in
(01:44:33):
the league that they can't beat. What I've heard about
Kyrie is he was all in and then maybe he
wasn't as much all in. But they feel like judging
it now is not smart like the way to the
playoffs and see how that plays out. They got some
recruiting to do, some work to do. But everyone's opinion
changes once you get two games that really matter. Fair Yeah, yeah,
(01:44:56):
there's no question. I mean they didn't look and I
at this and wrote this before. The Celtics didn't over
react to Kyrie's you know, you know his comments in
New York. I mean, they one thing they've done is
that they have been very proactive about trying to create
a partnership with this team. With Kyrie Irving, they have
been um, they have been very good at keeping him involved,
(01:45:19):
not in there, you know, my new shed day to
day stuff, but big picture plans how they're gonna build
a championship team. They have made him feel in every
possible way like a franchise player. Now, Kyrie Irving coming
into the season believed like everyone else did, that they
were gonna step back in, this was gonna be a
great team. You weren't gonna have the bumps that we've seen.
(01:45:39):
So it's been frustrated to that degree. But if this
Celtics team gets into the playoffs and you know, puts
on a deep run, that's gonna be impactful. If they
could be in the first round, that might be impactful too.
There's just too many unknowns, uh you know before we
get to July one to make any kind of prediction
on Kyrie Irving. But I do believe that the Celtics
(01:46:00):
are very comfortable with where they're at with Kyrie. Yeah.
If I gun to your head, okay, and we do not,
we're not doing old takes exposed, gun to your head, Okay?
Would you agree with with this assessment? Right? Um? I
think Kauai plays the Clippers next year. I think Kemba
plays with the Knicks with either Anthony Davis or with
(01:46:22):
Kevin Durant. Like, that's to me, what's what's most likely
to happen? Where are you on those? Uh? I? I
would lean towards the Clippers and Kauai, But again, the
playoffs I think will be impactful, as will the addition
of a guy like marcusol. I do lean towards New
York with with Kevin Durant. I just spent about I
(01:46:46):
did about forty five minutes with Kemba just the other day.
It's Charlotte. We talked about this subject extensively. It's gonna
be hard for him to leave Charlotte. The only way
he leaves Charlotte is if they really Nickel and Diamond.
I think he really wants to stay there, uh long term.
So I'm gonna say Kemba stays. And I'm still I
still believe Anthony Davis winds up in Boston just because
(01:47:07):
I don't think they get outbid. You know, they don't
want to include Jayson Tatum in a deal, but push
comes to shove, they will include Jayson Tatum and a deal,
and Frankly Duck, I'm not sure what they won't really.
I mean they have been the last two years. They've
been building towards this moment. They didn't get into the
Jimmy Butler sweepstakes, they dipped their toe into the Kawai
Leonard trade talks. Everything is built towards this. So if
(01:47:29):
they get beat out by you know, for some reason
that you know, Anthony Davis, they're convinced will never resign there,
That's one thing. But if they think he will, they're
not gonna get out bid for him. Uh. Last thing.
All of this has been a partial distraction for something
that I think in the league they're talking about what
happened to Russell Westbrook shooting free to shooting is awful now, Yeah,
(01:47:53):
and he's pressing. I don't I've seen the numbers as
of late. I've seen a couple of games. But he's
pressing and not like there's still volume shots Like he's not.
He's not sort of taking his foot off the gap
of the off the gas. He's just pressing forward and
trying to shoot himself out of this slump. I mean,
I don't know what it is. I really don't. I haven't.
I honestly, I haven't had too many conversations with Oklahoma
City about it. But it's just it's just not working
(01:48:16):
for him. And every time he misses two, three, four,
it just seems to get that rock rolling down the
mountain and you see a poor shooting percentage when it
comes to those outside shots. You're going to Boston that
you're going are you watching on TV? Because you're doing
there in Boston right now. I'm across the street and
I'll be headed over momentarily, all right, and avoid those
Patriot fans who got into a royal rumble that we
saw on video. I'm sure there'll be a couple of
(01:48:36):
those they'll be wearing. They'll be wearing either Patriots jersey
or or a Bird jersey. Tonight, drinking some biz. I'm
to throw down with anybody. Well, yeah, I mean Doug,
I'm I'm from Boston. I think a couple of them
were my second cousins, you know. I'm a couple were
named Smitty, several were named don't there the guy with
(01:48:59):
the back air, you know, with the with the shirt off.
Although Murph laid some dudes out, like Murphy was still standing,
and there were guys I've never seen guys that many
guys laid out during a fight. I can I tell
you that's just like as someone that got into a
lot of fights in the Boston areas, some of which
look kind of like that, Like that was a vintage
Boston fight, just slugging and then moving on like that
(01:49:20):
was that was a vintage Boston street fight. That's awesome.

with four players going to Miami. According to the Athletic
Hall of Famer and former skipper, Frank Robinson died today
(01:51:09):
at the age of three. And at the A T
and T Pebble Beach Pro Amp first round play, Phil
Mickelson finds himself one shot back of the lead at
six under par. Fabian Gomez and Scott Langley have the
lead at seven under. Dustin Johnson and Jordan's Speth both
at five under after rounds of sixty six today playing
on Monterey Peninsula. We'll be back to the Dug Gottleibs
(01:51:30):
show in ten seconds. But first, a word from farmers.
From a dog accidentally flooding a living room to a
dog taking a joy ride, we've covered it, talked to farmers.
We know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers under written my farmers
truck fire insurance, exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every steak.
(01:51:50):
Did you guys see this? What what happened? Um? This
was Zach Britton? Did you guys see the Zach Britton
dropped the age for the K like he's he's his
legal name is Zach with a K instead of his
saying his stage name that was Zach with an H.
Now part of it is Zach Britain's a picture. If
there's a chance that you're Zack with a K instead
(01:52:11):
of Zach with an H, is better. But why was
he going by Zach with an H? Maybe he was
only gonna be a setup man and get holds all
the time. That's aden. Yeah, I became a closer and
the history. My sister did that when she was for
a while there, I think middle school of high school.
She want to be Wendy with an eye, and then
she went back to Wendy with a y. But that's
(01:52:32):
the way. That's that's a story where I saw. I
was like, what, um remember he tore his uh? He
started last season on disabled lis because he tore his
achilles tendon. Um. So he but that was that was
last year. He ended up, you know, appearing in only
sixteen games. Then he he signed a three year, thirty
nine million to or deal with the Yankees. My question
is what's on what's on a contract? Is the contract
(01:52:55):
Sack with an H or Zach with a K. And
if it's not his legal name, he signed Zack with
an H. Couldn't avoid that contract. He should change his
last name to Britain, like Great Britain. That would be
then to throw everybody for a curveball. You gotta nicknames
Great Britain. There you go. I love when the guy
somebody has a kid, all of a sudden they put
senior on the back of their name because they have
a junior. It's like, then, I don't I don't know.
(01:53:19):
I think it's just showing off. You know that they
got some. That's all it is. The other you know
what I wait, you know the next year of the
next phase is we have a lot of hyphenated names,
right like uh Shay Gildist Alexander. At some point there's
gonna be a triple hyphen or maybe even a quadruple
hyphen name, won't there right Like if a hyphen name
(01:53:42):
marries a hyphen name and they want to give him
all the names, they'll have a four name last name.
Just be an oval on the back or an acronym
or an acronym, so they'll have they'll have an acronym,
could have that. You don't see a lot of the
first on you know, jerseys, because guys are doing enough.
But yeah, you don't have Doug Gottli the first. You
can't have any you know. But if there's any old guy,
(01:54:03):
you know, maybe you know, Vince Carter's gonna play into
his Vince Vince Carter the first because Vince Carter the
third had been It's possible he's been the league that
long like some Vince didn't. But some guys have kids
in there in high school, so that that's that's part
of it. Um, Remember Doug that the NFL used to
(01:54:24):
have the last names, like if there was another D.
Gottlieb on the team, like if the yeah yeah. Now
they don't even care about the first letter anymore, but
they're adding everything on the back like you could have
you know, seven Jones is on a team, and they're
all gonna have Jones. There's no more D. Jones or R. Jones.
It's just Jones. But for years in the NFL, there
was always the case of the first letter, and then
(01:54:45):
if you had a similar letter, as he said, go
to the second letter. I'm fast and by tonight's game,
What do you guys think happens? Music? What do you
think happens tonight? Lakers Celtics. Lakers were an abject disaster.
They had a couple of days off, um our day
off after losing the Pacers. Obviously they've added Rigie Bullock.
I would guess Mike mscal is not gonna be there tonight.
(01:55:05):
How do you think they react when they played the
season night. I think Lebron goes I'm best player in
the league, tries to go for like thirty five and
a triple double, but the Celtics still win by like
double digits, and so all of the talking points can
be Look how awesome Lebron is and all these scrubs,
and the Celtics are still a much better team. Um,
(01:55:28):
I think it's it's possible, It's really possible. I also,
he's got the load management thing right. Remember he played
a game, missed a game, and then it was supposedly
load management while they took him out, Like is he
a full go? Can he go the full game? I
think the load has been managed? Pause? Okay, uh buyer,
what do you think happens tonight? I I just think
(01:55:50):
the Celtics are a better team. I don't think they're
gonna Lakers are gonna crumble by forty two, but I
don't careful Lebron's out of his mind. I still think
the Celtics win by double digits. I have no idea.
You what happens? What about you? Rama's yes, it won't
be a forty two points, will be a twenty two
point loss. They cut it in half tonight. A welcome
(01:56:13):
to Lake count Reggie Bullock? How uh with Reggie Bullock
was originally drafted by the Clippers, by the way, but
now its um. I like that we should be on
family feud get us. You listen to uh Fox Sports Sunday.
We play it here on Fox Sports Radio. I want
to be in the real family feud though. All right,
(01:56:34):
well I only host that one. I don't know what
he's talking about, dougu I want to be on yours day. Thanks,
all right, I'll give I'll give you my all star
starting starting lineup up coming next. From a hotble loon
(01:57:01):
landing on a car to a load of concrete falling
on one, we've covered it. Talk to farmers. We know
a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
We are farmers under written my farmer's truck fire insurance
exchanges and affiliates proucts unavailable in every state. Hey, it's
(01:57:22):

refund this year? Tax Layer is set to make your
tax filing process fast easy, and they guarantee your maximum refund.

Mm hmmm, Doug Olive Show. You're on Fox Boards Radio
every day. This time we get you update on the
stories of today, and there are a lot of them.
So let's get out. Here's the Press, the Press. Valentine's
Day is a week from today. No Valentine's Day, John, Uh,
(01:58:10):
It's Thursday, February fourteen. What gift are you getting for
the one that you love? Say? Four d dollars on
the half care total Wait diamond hardpended now only to Cupid?
Who was boss? Is Valentine's Day at Ellsberg Diamonds, Dan Buyer?
What do you got, guests? Suit Doug Uh, We got
a bunch, including for her for the first time in
(01:58:33):
the last five minutes on any sports show. In about
a few minutes or so, we're gonna have the All
Star Game Draft. You're gonna be teaming up Doug with
John and you'll be Team Lebron. Ryan and I will
be teaming honest and drafting just the starters. We're not
gonna do the full rosters as the draft is tonight.
But you won't see this on any other TV show
or if you're it, on any other radio show. All Right.
Heiser Trophy winning quarterback Kyler Murray is on the official
(01:58:56):
list of participants schedule to attend the NFL Scouting Combine
in Indie starting Tuesday, February. I'm excited to see Kyler Murray. Um,
here there's a guy that should throw against air right
because there is there are no lineman in his way,
and he's got a great arm, and he's super athletic,
(01:59:17):
and he's got good foot movement. So I here's a
guy who Sometimes you don't want guys to do workouts
because you know, point guards, you can't simulate what they
do when it's gonna workout there better off when there's
nine other guys on the floor. Some quarterbacks they need um.
You know they're not as good on air, They're just not.
I think for Kyler Murray he will be I think
(01:59:37):
he should throw, not just run. A couple of other
NFL notes. We touched on this earlier when we were
doing game time, but Cam Newton's shoulder not as seriously
damaged as the team had feared. The Panthers believe that
Newton should be five this offseason and will be a
full go in training camp following shoulder surgery, and Chiefs
GM Brett Veach says the team is excited to bring
(01:59:58):
defensive end d Forward back next season, and Ford his
schedule to be a free agent this off season. Damn
on the folks so they could place the franchise tag
on him. Oh, by the way, Veach also said no
more basketball for Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, because why scary scared
of getting hurt after he was seen dribbling and making
a nice move, a nice little, nice little spin move.
(02:00:20):
I guess he was crushing dudes. Yeah, I don't know.
You just gotta be smart to stay outside and you
jump shots. That's all I do now. Hall of Fame
and No Defense. Hall of Famer and former Orioles and
Nationals manager and Expo skipper Frank Robinson died today at
the age of eighty three when m vps in both
leagues all time great um and a great dude too.
(02:00:45):
Write like, I don't remember anybody saying anything bad about
Frank Robinson the human being. Um. I also think that
he didn't he replace Cal Ripkins Sr. As manager of
the Orioles. I want to say he did so, I
don't know if he was. Was he the manager during
the f phase bat incident with Billy Ripken? Have to
(02:01:05):
tune in to find out. You can hear that on
x's and Oh's. John Ramos's Baltimore Orioles podcast talks about
his ex lovers and current Baltimore Orioles, x's and oh's
with John Ramos. After fifty two years, major League Baseball
will no longer have this. By the way, he was
a player manager. They used to have a lot of
player managers. That sounds like the coolest thing ever. I
(02:01:27):
think I'll lead off today, right, Pete Rose. That's the
whole thing with Pete Rose. Right, like Pete Rose, the
whole He doesn't remember when he started betting on baseball.
It's because he started betting on baseball when he was
a player manager. I want to bring back the player
manager thing. I think that's the coolest thing ever. But
like you go, like you call it time out from
second base to come in and go all right, you're out,
(02:01:47):
Like when I thought you'd just come over to say hi,
Like no, no, no, you're out. Give me a righting
in here. ESPN says that Major League Baseball is getting
rid of the d L. Yes, no more, no more
disabled list. It will now just be called the injured
So we'll have the i L instead of the d
L for Major League Baseball. Yeah. Yeah. Is it because
(02:02:08):
of the politically correctness or something. I think they're just
trying to make it more more apropos. Yeah, I think
there could be something to that. I honestly politically correct.
You can't say disabled. You can't say disabled, you're not abled,
you're disabled. You have to say injured. He had to
(02:02:29):
see injured injured. Well, I was talking about this. I
actually got my teeth clean today. I went to the
dentist day. No cavities. By the way, Ramos, thanks so
much for the appreciate that. I do you do feel
like a win with like no no cavities, not this time. Anyway,
we were trying to we don't. I don't know who's
hosting the the the was it the Oscars? I have
no idea. And I was like, Grammys are this weekend?
(02:02:52):
But which one was Kevin Hart? Which one was Kevin
Harts supposed to host oscar oscar Oscars? Right? And I
was like, look, it's got to be hard to find. Like,
She's like, why isn't somebody I was like, it's because
everybody is offended. I can't tell jokes anymore. We were
gonna have an All Star draft? Can we do it
in sixty seconds with Ryan and me being a team
(02:03:14):
Doug and John your first up draft the starters, if
your team. Lebron, you get first pick. Who's the who's
the captain? Other team? It's me and Ryan are captains.
You know who's the other player captain? It's Lebron and Janice. Ah,
I'm taking staff. You go to that, John, Ryan, who
do you want to go with? I say, we go
with Harden? Yeah, yeah, I got I got Durant. Okay, okay,
(02:03:39):
we took Harden. All right, so you got Stephen Curry
and uh and Durant? How about embid you want to
go there? Let's I got, I got Clay Thompson. All right, John,
do you want to weigh in any of them? Now?
I still I don't know how the promo hasn't been
made about John helping us out in Atlanta with where
(02:04:02):
we were in the interview. Uh? Ryan, Uh, let's go
with Kauai. Good answer, Good answer, John? Do you want
to hop in on one? Did we take Kyrie yet?
We did not take him? And Anthony Davis take him out?
(02:04:24):
I'll take Anthony Davis. There you go. I mean, this
is what we missed. We missed a couple. This is
Doug Gottli Show. I'll be hosting cow Heard tomorrow on
Fox Sports Radio
