(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America?
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you from
the City of Angels. We've got a home playoff game
for John Ramos's l A Rams road playoff game for
my l A Chargers. Kyle Kuzman drops forty one and
(00:44):
three quarters. A lot to talk about, but we don't
just talk about l A sports. We talk about all sports.
And wait, ti you hear how sports and politics are
the exact same thing. The Doug Gotlap Show is brought
to you by Farmers. At Farmers, we see almost everything,
so we know how to cover almost anything. When it's
game time, have experienced player to help you stay ahead
(01:05):
of the game, put their experience into play at Farmers
dot com. Ah, Yes, it's a it's a copycat league.
It's a copycat league. And some people believe that the
copycat league will ultimately lead to failures from many of
(01:27):
these head coaches. And you know what, they're right, but
it's not because of the copycat league. Adam Gaze is
your new head coach the New York Jets. He was
the head coach of the Miami Dolphins until last week.
Adam Gaze is a offensive quarterback guru. He spent time
in Denver. Peyton Manning swears by him. I actually called
(01:48):
a game this year's sideline for Fox when they played
the Bears, and you know who was on the sideline.
That would be the sheriff, Peyton Manning. And apparently Peyton
Inning made a call and that was that. That was
what sealed the deal for Adam Gates to become the
new head coach of the Jets. And so you may
(02:09):
say to yourself, man, Mattia, just a copycat league, what
a trend? You're right, You're You're absolutely right. This is
a trend. That's what happens in business. But it's also
what happens in politics. Hey, I mean, go back to
(02:31):
when Resident Obama took over. Do you remember that moment,
Remember that moment in Chicago where he and his young
family were waving, and it was this unbelievable tidal wave
of support, not just for President Obama but for the
entire Democratic Party. What happened in the mid terms, they
(02:55):
got bludgeoned. And then, even though he won re election
slowly but sure, the Democrats went from having complete control
of the White House, the House, and the Senate after
the last election when Donald Trump one, it was a
red wave and the Republicans had the House and the Senate.
(03:18):
And what happened in the mid terms, what happened to
the mid terms was the Republicans lost the House and
held onto the Senate. And we can make all kinds
of excuses on either side for why one side, why
the Democrats didn't win the Senate, or why the Republicans
lost the House. But the fact is, this is generally
(03:41):
how it works in our country. The pendulum swings is
the same, right, it goes from one side. Obama comes
in blue wave to the other side. Trump comes in
red wave, and I'm sure at some point it will
swing back the other way. That's just the cycle of
how we live, even where we live. That's no different
(04:04):
than the National Football League. I can't believe these offensive
coaches are all getting a chance when so many of
them are unproven. Okay, um, Mike Petton, he got a
job defensive guy Cleveland Browns. Remember that, Remember Chuck Pagano,
Rex Ryan twice over, Jack del Rio, Marvel Lewis came
(04:30):
in as a defensive guy. But you just go back
two or three years ago, and so many of these
coaches came in with with a Todd Bowles just got
the job with four years ago with the Jets, did
a great job of the Arizona Cardinals on defense. So
we we make this out to be about race or age,
(04:50):
when the truth is, it's about the pendulum swinging. It's
the league reacting to what we've seen during a season.
All time records set for yardage, all time records set
four points, and more and more teams understanding that a
(05:12):
great way to build a great team is to get
a young quarterback who's under club control, not making million dollars,
and if you can just survive with that young quarterback,
then you can build an outstanding team around him. That's
what the Seahawks did, right, That's what the Eagles have done,
(05:34):
That's what the Rams have done, That's what the Chiefs
have done. That's what the Cowboys have done. Frankly, it's
what the Jaguars did. Was a young, young ish but
he wasn't making still not making twenty millies stinks, but
still making million dollars a year, right, And so in
(05:59):
this cop be cat league, it's a hey, look, we
got a young quarterback. Let's figure out a way to
get the most out of him, and then let the
GM and the defensive guys get as many dudes as possible,
get playmakers on offense to make them look good, build
an offensive line. It will swing back the other way.
(06:20):
How do I How do I know it? Because there
are two assistant coaches who have both got interviews that
are young, that are vibrant, that are really good. And
when the pendulum swings, Chris Richards from the excuse me,
Chris for Shard Shard from the Dallas Cowboys formerly a
Seattle Seahawks, will ultimately get a head coaching job, and
Brian Flores other doing Patriots, we'll get a head coaching job.
(06:46):
Both are under forty years old, both are outstanding, well
respected their job, but they're also still coaching teams, so
it makes them harder for them. To invest in to
interview and that there are other issues that go with it.
But more than anything, they also have to fit what
a team needs. Even Big Bangio, who's old and a curmudgeon,
(07:07):
sixty years old and got the job with the Denver Broncos.
Like even he's in denial of of of how it
works in Denver. Right here, here's here's Big Pangio today
at the introductory press conference. We have to evolve on
defense to defend what the offenses are doing. So there
has been evolution, and the biggest evolution in football that's
(07:30):
happened in the last few years is you don't see
fullbacks on the field much, which I'm not saying is
right or wrong. You're seeing three wide receivers on the field.
So the game's trended towards the speed of the wide
receivers and spreading it out. Yeah and oh yeah, by
the way, Pangio doesn't get the job in Denver if
if Gary Kubiak could be the head coach, couldn't you know?
(07:56):
I mean there's also a certain amount of this where
where guys, uh, they don't they offensive coordinators have to
be paid at a higher level. Right, It's like this
happens in our business where producers top out because there's
(08:16):
a producers only make X. You're like, yeah, well, the
guy's killing it. He's really really good, he's got to
make two. Actually, well, he can't be a producer now,
he's got to be a program director. Right, that's what
happens with offensive coaches. If you're really really good, you
can't go and say, well, listen, we're gonna pay you
(08:37):
two X to be an offensive coordinator. Like now, the
only way to pay a guy to extra three X
in the NFL is to make him a head coach.
And really they're just the offensive coordinator and you hire
a defensive coordinator, or you work for the Patriots and
you're Josh mc dael's. But that's that's an outlier, that liar. Look,
there have been many trends in the National Football League.
(09:00):
There's been the trend where you had to have coached before, right,
some places where you had to have been a head
coach before. Of course, that allowed Rex Ryan to get
another job in Buffalo, That allowed Jack del Rio to
get another job with the Oakland Raiders, That allowed Hugh
Jackson to get another job at the Cleveland Browns, Right,
you had to have been the um the Giants. Why
am I forgetting uh the Giant's head coach out also
(09:22):
an offensive guy, obviously, Pat Sherman. Pat Sherman was for
one year the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. There's
some place you're like, look, I can't hire a guy
unless he's been a head coach before. Andy Reid been
a head coach before, in a really good one. But
when there aren't, there's not a list of great candidates, right,
Like Jimmy Johnson not coaching anymore. All right, he's just
(09:43):
not that ship sailed a long time ago. Tony Dungee
not coaching anymore, you know. I mean, look, if you
want to get one of those guys off of TV,
what do you have to do? You have to get
mc garden deal, which i Gruden I think is going
to his process ultimately should prove fruitful if they don't
(10:04):
completely screw it up. But people are making fun of
their process. They are making fun of their process. So
owners look at themselves and like, well, Gruden's an offensive guy.
He's an offensive guru, and we had to overpay and
give him too too many years in order to get him.
We're not going to do that. If we hire an
(10:25):
offensive coordinator or a guy who just got fired, we
can save some money on a head coach. And oh yeah,
by the way, fix our quarterback and we'll figure out
the rest. It's funny. You heard Vic Fangio talking about
the evolution of football. Take a listen. This is two
thousand seventeen, just two years ago. Year in AFGO Steve
Kurt talking about the evolution of basketball. Right, if they
(10:46):
were all the game gets worse as time goes on.
Players are less talents, destroy everybody. It's weird. Is sort
of like sports players weaker and smaller and less. Still,
(11:11):
I can't explain Yeah, I can't. I can't explain it,
so he said, I cannot explain it. So like, look,
players change, the sports are changing, and management and ownership
is forced to try and keep up and catch up.
(11:33):
And and here's a really important thing, and this, this
is this has not been uttered by one single national
radio host. Because I want you to turn up your dial.
If you're listening to me, listen to the I Heart
radio app, if you're listen on any of our hundreds
of affiliates nationwide. However, you're listening to the show. This
is really important, all right, and when the here's the
(11:57):
biggest difference in when you hire a coach in the
NFL and you hire a coach in college football. The
press conference actually really matters in college football because it
sets a tone. Right. If you get the fans excited,
if you get you'll get the recruits excited. You come in,
you're like, man, we got this guy, that guy, this guy,
and then we're gonna go out we hit the road
(12:19):
recruiting because that's the lifeblood of how you get players.
The biggest challenge to NFL teams for the next ten
years is not winning games. Do you know what it is?
It's getting people to come to their stadiums. Ask yourself this,
(12:41):
would you go to an NFL game if it was
this weekend and you're like, oh, yeah, I'm playoff game,
I'd go okay. If the tickets were two hundred bucks
apiece for decent seats. You don't get all the replays
now this weekend, at least their standal loan games, so
(13:01):
you're not missing them. Now, think about regular season games
and all of these teams that fired coaches aren't going
to the playoffs, so you've got to sell season tickets
and personally private seat licenses PSLs for your stadium and
your product. While it's good, it's more of a TV product.
Between the replays, they're able to change the channel, they're
(13:24):
able to see different angles of the game, the broadcasters,
it's the perfect TV product. It's not a great product
in person. Additionally, it's not really a family atmosphere. That's
not really what the The NFL is not major League Baseball. Right,
there's fights in the stands. It's a bunch of dudes
or women. They get dressed up as like characters, they
(13:44):
paint their face, they scream obscenities, they drink a bunch
of beer. Oh yeah, and you gotta fight traffic, pay
to park, stay for an increasingly long game, fight traffic,
get home, and you miss all the other games. With
fantasy football, it's really really hard to pay attention to
your team when it's way more cost effective and frankly,
sometimes better to sit and watch it at home. Right,
(14:07):
what's gonna make you want to buy season tickets? More?
Vic Fangio and a old curmudgeon defensive coordinator or an
offensive guy like Cliff Kingsbury who says, and we might
not win, we might score seventy. You don't think that
owners and gms know this that if most teams in
(14:30):
the NFL finished between seven and nine and nine and seven,
the differences is our stadium filled and your stadium is
more likely to be filled if you one win and
two score a bunch of points. Heisman Trophy winner Kyler
Murray is expected to enter the NFL draft. Why he'll
be a first round pick and why that might be
a mistake I'll explain next. Be sure to catch live

(16:18):
But you're not really I know you want to hear me,
but you also want to hear all those other guys.
Um All ball drops tomorrow tomorrow. Adam Zagoria Uh, he
writes for The New York Times works on s n
Y TV. Just a basketball dude, he joins me, so too,
does Rusty LaRue. You guys remember Rusty LaRue wake Forest.
(16:39):
Do you know? He played three sports in college, including
setting n c A records as a quarterback, then playing
the NBA with Michael Jordan's last championship team. Great stories
including a tragic, uh personal tale to tell you about.
Um so right through Lue that will drop tomorrow All
Ball podcast and he heard podcast network. So look, I've
(17:00):
done this a while. And by doing this, I mean
not just national sports radio. I started doing this in
two thousand two, damn you know, thousand to No. Two
thousand three, I started doing national sports radio. So this
is year sixteen. Yeah, year sixteen, not couple fifteen a
(17:23):
half years. I've been doing this, And I've also been
covering college basketball for uh six seventies is my sixteen
seventeenth year. Um I've covered. I've done college football games.
I've done NFL games as well this year, play by
play and sideline and so yeah, whether it's the this
(17:48):
happens in NFL and NBA draft all the time where
you get unnamed league source says if they were drafting
number one they would select such and such player. And
you have to take it with a grain of salt
because the only people that would say that are people
who aren't drafting number one. You know, if I was
drafting number one, I would do complete opposite. Yeah, but
(18:11):
you're not drafting number one. You're not drafting number one. Um.
This is oddly what happens in college athletics. When you
ask about an opponent, coaches always go above and beyond
and talking about said opponent. The famous Lou Holt is I, hell,
(18:36):
that will even Mary's unbelievable program. Hey is fantastic. With
the way we say black and tack, it will be
lucky to go a point. You know, I just want
to team make sure what our quarterback lines up, that
he's understander, not under the guard. Right. That's the famous
Lou Holtz. Um. No one says, hey, this team we're
(18:57):
playing this weekend stinks, this quarterback or playing awful. They
always make the opponent to be great one to make
sure that their kids are paying attention in two because
if they win, they beat a really good opponent. Right,
But we don't take it with a grain as salt
when we're fans. This was Cliff Kingsbury, Texas text head
(19:18):
coach when they were getting ready to take out Oklahoma
this year, talking about Oklahoma's quarterback Kyler Murray Kyler is,
I mean, he's a freak man. Party is a really
good young player, and he's going to be a tremendous player.
But Kyler as a freak And I've followed him since
he was a sophomore um in high school, and um
just think the world of him and what he can
(19:39):
do on a football field. And I've never seen one
better in high school and he's starting to show it
now at the college level. And I mean, I don't
have enough good things to say about him. He's phenomenal.
I've never seen him have a poor outing, not one
which a quarterbacks it's impossible to do, but he's done it.
And uh, I don't know. I take him with the
first figure of the draft if I could. I know
he's signed up to play baseball, but he is a
(20:00):
I'm in a football player, and um, I would I
would take him with the first pick, right, I mean
that that's look. And at the time Kingsbury wasn't a
head coach in the NFL. He wasn't accordinator to the NFL.
He wasn't even the coach of Oklahoma. He's the coach
of Texas Tech. By the way I've seen him, had
plenty bad games. That's why he lost the starting job
at Texts A and M now clips on playing in
(20:20):
high school where he never lost a high school game,
like first dad never lost high school game. Total legend,
and he was great this year. And I was the
one music actually will support me on this. I know
you will as well. I believe I was the first
one to go like, hey, has anybody actually looked at
(20:40):
the financials? He should play football if he's a first
round pick, not baseball. Wasn't I felt like I was
like two weeks ahead of everybody else. Is that is
that fair? Yeah? You were definitely one of the first people,
probably the first person I heard say football, because you
definitely convinced me, I was baseball was the better choice, right,
And it's it's reasonable because we're you know, we look
(21:04):
at the numbers for baseball. My point has always been
with baseball is when you get drafted in baseball, you're
not actually a major league baseball player. And then once
you become a major league baseball player, you're not making
any money until your fourth or fifth year when you
get to arbitration. So you're talking about we're we're minimum
six years away, six years from getting a pay day.
(21:28):
And then the ideas everybody thinks, well, huge pay day
in baseball. Not really potentially maybe, but there's like ten
everyday players, maybe fifteen that are signing those um nine
figure deals, right, nine figure deals that are not paid.
(21:49):
He's not a picture and if he's gonna be one
of those guys. Meanwhile, if you're starting quarterback in the NFL,
you can make the exact same amount of money. Ben
roethlisbergers thirty seven years old. Do you know how much
she's made throughout his career? A hundred and ninety million dollars,
I don't nine million dollars, which if he was a
(22:10):
baseball player, he's thirty seven years old. That's what a
superstar baseball player would have probably made outside of Alex Rodriguez,
who's an outlier, right, And I don't think anybody thinks
Ben Rothsburg is a great player. Is not the Ben.
He's not the Alex Rodriguez of the NFL. But it
(22:31):
would be a mistake to take him win one overall. One,
you already have a quarterback. Two. I mean he's tiny, tiny,
three though he has a cannon and can throws. There's
a lot of Russell Wilson with Mike Vicks athleticism to him.
(22:52):
Who's playing this weekend? Guys, who's playing this weekend? Cheer
at golf? Pocket passer Tom Brady, Philip Rivers pocket pastor,
pocket passer Drew Brees, small but not tiny, six ft tall,
six ft one. But even if you're six ft tall,
(23:13):
pocket passer Pat Mahomes athletic, can move, but big and
really a pocket passer. This guy would completely have to
change the sport. And number one overall when you already
have a quarterback seems too rich for my blood. Let's
(23:35):
check in with Dan Buyer, who's back after binge watching
all the movies we suggested and hanging in there doing
all rights, just you know, day by day, that's what
we're doing, you know. In addicity, or Cardinals take their
NFL network stided a source close to the team saying
it would be ludicrous for the Cardinals to trade Josh
Rosen at this point. ESPN says former Giant said coach

to join Cliff Kingsbury staff Van's Joseph also interviewing with
the Cardinals and Bengals Cowboys watter receiver Cole Beasley missed

check in with less need is the general manager of
the l A Rams for the second consecutive year, get
(25:23):
a home game in the playoffs. Course this year they
gotta buy um. Let's let's you realize that you are
a trend setter, right, that you're a I think what
Silicon Valley calls you as a disruptor. Everyone wants the
next Sean McVeigh, and you got Sean McVeigh. How does
that feel? I can tell you it's it's definitely satisfying
(25:45):
for for many reasons, and probably the most important reason
is for this to actually be a trend that people
want to follows. You know, over the last couple of years,
we've had a successful football team. We've made progress, and
we won the division twice and we've gotten to the
tournament twice. So I think that's the most satisfying thing.
And but you know, that's really what I can say
(26:09):
on it. And and I don't blame uh other teams
other organizations for trying to find uh the next Sean McVeigh. Okay, so, so,
and I know you've discussed this previously, but I don't
know how many people are asking about it now, But
I'm fascinated by it. What was the process like in
terms of how how difficult was it to even convince yourself,
(26:31):
let alone your owner and everybody around you that, hey,
here's a guy who's, you know, thirty years old and
has never been a head coach, and where to come
put him in charge of our team? And everyone had
said how talented your team was, but a quarterback who
one year in people were wondering how good Jared Goff
could be. How difficult was that to convince everybody he
(26:52):
was the right guy. Your hindsight, it seems like right,
it's the obvious choice. I can tell you when we
went through it a little bit more difficult, uh, you know,
easier said than done, as you've alluded to, And there
there were many variables that got into that. I think
number one is this the research we did on Sean
(27:14):
Uh came back. Really he was very unique, and especially
the research that we did with the players he had
coached in in that Washington Redskin locker room. I mean
it was hey, all of them gave home run uh
thumbs up type recommendations in terms of, yes, we'll follow
(27:35):
this guy up a mountain. But more importantly to really
bright with football does an unbelievable job of teaching football
to the most important people in your organization, and that's players.
So that that was one thing. So then you're always
still trying to get a while this guy is thirty
years old, and in the back of your mind, probably
like all of us, you're thinking, wow, I must have
(27:56):
been a loser at thirty years old. We're sitting here
and there viewing this guy for a head coach job,
and and uh, what was I doing at thirty? So
but that was all. But I think when you met
with Sean, and I think a lot of people have
seen this personality now as as he's gotten popular and
beneface and and and been a you know, in the
involved in the media where you can get his personality,
(28:16):
he commands a room you quickly forget. But the guys
you know in his early thirties, Yeah, listen, I've and
I've I haven't worked in the media, and I've been
fortunate to work at at ESPN, CBS, now at Fox.
I worked at all different sorts of leadership guys, and
I can tell you that like you can. I remember
one place I worked. We had one guy who was
(28:37):
much younger, and he was in charge, and he got
up in front of the room and it was dead silent,
and everybody's paying attention, and I don't. And it didn't
matter how old he was. You just knew and uh.
He left that company. And then the next guy who
stood up in front of the room was probably ten
years his senior. Everyone knew him, had been experienced, and
he just didn't have the same panash and he didn't
(28:59):
he didn't generate the same amount of charisma. He was
probably better prepared and better suited for the job. But
you weren't. We weren't his into him, And I and
I think that's one of the things that Sean has.
It's aid with what friends say. Genes s qual right,
you can't put your hand on it's just the thing, right, right,
And I think that's the easiest way to say, right,
it's it's the it factor. We don't I mean, I
(29:21):
don't know how you define that, but what I do
know is you feel it. And I think we were
probably less than ten minutes into that interview, and I
believe I remember writing a note, Hey, it's not about
the age, it's just whether do you want to hire
Sean McVeigh as you're hid football coach at the age
is not a problem here because you as soon as
you sat out with him, you're he's got command and
(29:44):
you're listening and he's teaching and by the end you're
following him up a hill. Uh what about La fleur?
He was with you, he was with you for a
year as well. Did you know that he was a
guy that this quickly could assimilate to being a head coach?
Death only I think you what what that group has,
and it's very fascinating. They all love football, they all
(30:08):
want to win, they all want to compete, but they
they spend every waking, passionate hour that they have trying
to to come up with wastes to let's go and
make offensive football better, and and and in terms you
know overall, you know, overall team better. So would when
(30:28):
you would just observe how they worked work together, you
definitely had a good feeling if we had success here
in Los Angeles. Stat that, Matt and and right now,
we've got a couple of other people on our staff
who have interviewed. And I don't blame teams for interviewing
you just you just had a good, good feeling if
we have success, there's some really bright people in this
(30:51):
building that's going to get a chance to to following
Sean's shoes as well. Let's need joining us in the
Doug Outlicks show here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh. Last year,
obviously you get beat at home by the Atlanta Falcons.
This year, no Cooper Cup, and I felt like that
that hurt Jared. Of course, the offensive line wasn't as
dominant as it was in the year. And then Todd
(31:12):
being hurt. Uh, Todd being a little banged up has
has hurt the offensive production. Uh, what are your thoughts
on how close to being back to the start of
the year when you guys were really really clicking, you know,
especially after the first couple of weeks. Is this offense, Well,
I think what you said, I won't. I don't think
we won't make light of it. Right, if you go
(31:33):
into a game and you lose Cooper Cup that that
is going to affect you and and negatively, there's some
there's some I always say that every thorn has everythorn
didn't have a rose, but every rose has a thorn
per se. But the rose of this injury was Okay,
wait a minute. Whether it's different personnel packages that we
haven't used, whether it's younger players getting on the field
(31:56):
and experience so that you know, our offensive staff, Sean,
our quarterback, everybody else, uh, you know, trusted them to
make place. But there's definitely some evolution, some u that
you have to do. I think all good teams do it.
You're gonna face adversity through the year. The best thing
you can do is make the most of it. And
you're gonna go to battle and and and try to
(32:17):
you know, create matchups. You know, in this case with
the Cowboys, that that air on the side of the
Rams and that's just what you have to do. Okay,
So here's and you tell me if I'm way off this.
Let's needs the gentle manager of the Rams. Back when
you guys are in St. Louis, you were the thorn
in the side of the Seahawks, right, the Seahawks they
kicked the hell out everybody, and they were always in
for a war with you guys because of your because
(32:40):
of your front seven, the speed of your defense, and
you would run the football kind of shorten the game.
And it seemed like, whether reality, it seemed like you
were the one of the toughest opponent yearly twice a
year for those dominant Seahawk teams. Is that was that
a fair Um? I know it wasn't always that way,
but was that a fair assessment? That's that's definitely a
(33:01):
fair take in assessment on on that robbery during those
those early years, for sure. Okay. So I look at
this Cowboys team, and I think they're built like those
Seahawks teams. Right. They got a quarterback who he can
run a little bit, you can throw a little bit,
and they're pretty conservative with their play calling. They're really
good running team, probably even better than the Marshawn Lynch
running teams with the Seahawks, and they got speed on defense,
(33:25):
which matches up to Gurley. They're really physical upfront then
get after the passer. Like just in terms of matchups,
I feel like there's some similarities there. Even though if
I was gonna pick out skill position players and and
how many teams in the league you could, you would
obviously beat way more teams in league than they would.
This feels like a tough matchup based upon how they play,
similarly to how you guys just play against the Seahawks teams.
(33:48):
Any fairness definitely fair And you're exactly right now. And
I think I think the interesting thing now that you
were let's call it, we're in the division around you
get a buy. I think when you get to the
the final eight teams, it's probably hard to hey find uh,
let's call it a team that you you know that
every capable of beating anybody on that game. And and
(34:12):
also the thing that the Cowboys have going for him
is you know, if you're if you get to buy,
whoever you play, whoever comes to Los Angeles, UH or
any other team that has to buy, I guess what
they're hot they they got a winning streak in the playoffs.
They could have lost their last four games of the
regular season, but you win one playoff game, you're hot. So, uh,
(34:35):
everything you said is true and I think you know it.
It makes this matchup, you know, let's call it good entertainment,
good for uh Saturday night. And and you gotta we
have to prayer just as though to give them our
best shot and go try to get to win. In
your team, you know, I think the we're very confident team.
(34:57):
And and and again I always say that confident is
that means you're gonna doesn't mean that you're gonna win
the game. And I think, but the reason you become
a confident team is and it probably starts last year,
right last year, we wanted to just you know, make progress.
Somewhere in the middle of the sixteen season, and coincidentally,
(35:19):
probably after beating the Cowboys last year, wait a minute,
could we do something a little bit bigger than just progress?
And and it led to a division championship. But I
think all of those steps uh along the way getting
you know, hey, going through a process, trying to improve
the boring stuff, that cliche stuff that's actually true, that
(35:42):
you come in on Wednesdays and Thursdays and get better.
They lead to results on Sundays and and two years
in the process. Guess what You go into each game
believing that you can win and and and it's not
just a false belief because guess what you've done it
so you know you can. The key is this, And
what Sean does a great job is is is during
(36:02):
the week explaining to our team how we can Boys
if we execute. It's gonna be fascinating to see cal
seeum great place to watch game. Can't wait to see
your team compete this week. And congratulations on another fabulous
season thirteen wins and another division title. Thanks so much
for joining us less on Fox Sports Radio. Definitely appreciate
you having me. All right, that's Lessnee, gentle manager of

tweeted something out about it as well. I take both
of their words for it. I believe it to be accurate. Well,
I'll share that with you at the top of the hour. Plus,
Joey Bosa is gonna join us from the Charger's gonna
stop by. He's got a couple minutes after practice, Edwarder
will join us. Bruce arians Man, we got a lot
of stuff. Let's get to a game. Okay, this is
(37:50):
game tied on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Dan Bayer what
he got? Buyer the game today? Doug is all right?
Guess who is the most expensive ticket on the secondary
market for this weekend's NFL playoff games? So, which are
the four matchups? Is the most pricest? It's got to
(38:12):
be the Rams? Yeah, Stubbubb had a ticket for that
game priced at two hundred and eighty five dollars as
the lowest price ticket. Chargers Pats prices as well a
hundred and seventy dollars. If you want to see Saintego's
right now, you can do so for about a hundred
and sixty. Well, Colts Chiefs, you can get in for
under a hundred dollars right now. The lowest price ticket
ninety bucks. Um, and that seems like the best atmosphere
(38:37):
that'd be. Like, that's a fun game to watch. Although, man,
tiech fans get will get super tight. Can you imagine
how tight that stadium is gonna get if it's close late? Yeah,
it may be a no win situation. Because they want
to be like, all right, if they win, then you
maybe want to save the money for the a f
C Championship, but you definitely don't want to be there,
as he said, if they lose. So maybe that's why
Kansas City is just a little apprehensive. Guests, who who
(39:00):
has moved past Kevin Durant into the starting lineup and
voting for the Western Conference front court for next month's NBA.
I'll start, I'm gonna go Paul George. Yeah, the thunder
forward now cracking the top three. Lebron and Luca don
Chech remained one two in the front court in the
Western Conference, but it's George moving past Kevin Durant. Media
and players will also have a say in this. But
(39:21):
Paul George, at least in the eyes of the fans,
the top three player right now. Yeah, that's why fans
shouldn't be allowed. Not not just that, like, look, he's
had a great year. It's the more Luca don check
you know, like stop it, you know, stop it. Here's
the thing, it's Kevin Durand having a good year. Yeah,
(39:42):
he's shooting um from the field thirty six from three,
which is a little old from the fifth to line,
averaging twenty eight and a half points, seven half assist
and six rebounds a game. And oh yeah, by the way,
he's played in forty one games. I believe he's played
in every game. Unlike, you know, I like his teammates,
(40:03):
like most of these other guys in the NBA, and
like the Warriors might be underachieving, and they have the
second best record there one game back of the Denver Nuggets. Like,
it's really silly that Luca don Che is in the
starting lab right now. Guess who is a contender in
the NBA's Eastern Conference that had a team meeting last
month that seemed to turn things around, Uh Pacers the
(40:29):
Boston Celtics. Yes, Celtics had a meeting after a December
lost to Milwaukee. They then have won their last four
seven and two since that meeting. Still trying to fight
up is there in the five spot in the East.
I've had a bunch of injuries too, Yeah, but things
looking good for the Celtics. Finally, Doug guests who on
the crew watched the first thirty minutes of Pulp Fiction yesterday?
(40:51):
I guess that's you. Yes, it would be all you
turned it off like you're bragging about turning off one

so I moved on to the DVR editions of Surviving

does Marcellus? Who does Marcello's uh work for? What is it? Anyway?
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. That
is one tasty burger. Look at the big brain on, Brad?

Fox Sports Radio? You know, this weekend's really interesting, really interesting,
(42:01):
and I think maybe the most interesting game. You guys,
tell me the most interesting game is Chargers Patriots. Now
music if you feel for you to keep me honest
on this one, okay, gem me honest. I think it's
charges with Patriots, and I think it's from from this perspective. Um,
(42:22):
it's the Patriots. And I think anyone would say, if
there's a year where you can get the Patriots, even
though their record is this feels like the year, um,
And if there's a team that on paper has all
of the makings of what it would take, like look
(42:44):
the idea that you're gonna Last year, the Jaguars had
a great defense, but no one could. You couldn't buy
into Blake Bortles right like, you just couldn't, Like I
just I couldn't get over Blake Bortles because he's Blake Bortles.
You have Philip Rivers, who hasn't beaten Tom Brady, although
(43:04):
I don't remember Philip Rivers playing defensive back against Tom Brady,
all right, but he hadn't beaten Tom Brady. But you
got Philip Rivers, who he's gonna play. He's gonna be
in the profit Ball of Fame. They have a running game.
You have to run the football, especially in the cold.
They have Hall of Fame or tight end and and
(43:24):
and they have their most talented tight end back. They
got talent wide receiver. But it's not just an offensive team. Defensively,
Joe bos Is gonna join us a second Joey Bosa
and Melvin Ingram Like that's as dynamic a one to
combination as you're gonna find. And then you got Derwin
James and a bevy of talented other players. Now are
(43:44):
the things I'm not saying. There's not things going against
the Chargers. They're on the road again, even though they've
been the most successful road team this year, winning in
Kent City, winning in Pittsburgh, last week, winning in Baltimore.
But it's still it's New England. It's a different beast.
They seem to figure out the King game. I know
they haven't done it. But if there's a team that
hasn't done it, and if you took the lightning boat
(44:07):
off the side of their helmet and he just said, hey,
hall of fame quarterback, hall of fame tight end, super
talented running back, super talented wide receivers, super talented defensive end, linebackers,
super talented defensive back. They've won thirteen games. They've won
the most road games of anybody in the NFL. Like, right,
if it wasn't that it's the Chargers, you would go
(44:30):
against the Patriots, who you know, they run the football
probably better this year than they have. I mean, Sonny
Michelle's good back. They got James another good back who's
more of a hybrid. Gronk is still Gronk, but he's
like a much lesser version of it. Edelman is good
but not the same as he was, and no one
(44:50):
really scares you. They got Brady, but Brady doesn't really
scare you like he used to. But you have to
go and actual they do it right, yeah, actually do.
It's like reading car reviews and you're like, Wow, this
this Hyundai looks amazing. This Kia five thousand looks amazing.
(45:12):
What are you gonna buy a Hyundai or a Kia
five thousand. You're gonna buy Alexis or a Cadillac? Are
you gonna buy a Infinity or you're gonna Fuyre Mercedes?
Benz Right, It's it's it's hard hard. So again, look, Cowboys,
Rams is big time football. When we talked with Less
Need last hour, if you missed that, download the podcast
(45:34):
Chiefs Colts is interesting and of course they have their
own history, so too to the Chargers and Patriots. Although
most of these Chargers outside of Philip Rivers don't have
anything to do with that history. I think it's the
most interesting game. Having spent time around the Chargers, we
went to their training camp, I've gone to a couple
of games. I called one of their games on radio.
We know people in the front office and and to
(45:56):
start their season, I would text Charger officials and I
was like, hey, you guys are pretty good. Wait till
we get nine back is Joey Bosi joins the Doug
Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Joey, thanks so much
for taking time. What was that like having to watch
after season? It was tough? Um At this point, I
(46:18):
could only take it as a learning experience. I mean,
I had time to reflect and kind of realize how
much football means to me and how much being out
there means to me. And getting to see Isaac and
some young guys step up and play it was great.
But obviously it was tough. Tough watching my team player. Yeah,
I was. I was actually got a chance to call
the radio, the national radio broadcast for the Cardinals game.
(46:40):
When you get your first sack coming back, what's that
feeling like a guy who like, look, this was gonna
be your year? And you have to wait and then
you finally, you know, you make it. I think it
was a great spin move and you end up getting
to the you know, getting to Josh Rosen. What's that
feeling like of the waiting and then exploding on a quarterback. Yeah,
it's a lot of relief. Of course, so we have
came in my first game act. But just to be
(47:02):
out there again making plays and to be able to
celebrate with your team, it's a great feeling. Uh. Last
week obviously big challenge, completely different challenges in this week.
We'll get to this week in a second, um. But
for for people who like, we don't really we don't,
you know, as as civilians, right, we don't really understand
defensive line play. We only unerstand when you sacked the quarterback.
(47:23):
But it did feel like I feel like the change
in the first time against the Ravens and last week
against Ravens was you guys on that defensive line dominating
the game. How are you able to do so? I
think you just after playing a week or whatever over
ten days before, we're able to gather a bunch of
(47:43):
film and have more time to break down their tendencies.
And we just had a better idea as a defense
of what they wanted to do and their tendencies and
each formation and kind of what to look forward not
Brandon Bibey and obviously missed the game, and he announced
yesterday on social media that his daughter had passed away. Uh,
this is like real human stuff to have to have
(48:04):
to deal with. What's it been like in your guys
meeting rooms knowing that your teammates going through this. Yeah,
it's it's tough. M having him back yesterday, it was
good to see him. Tough news to hear, but it's just,
I mean, that's so much bigger than football, and it's
he made the right decision what he's doing, and we're
(48:26):
all here for him, we all support him and without
anything he's doing with this. So obviously I wish she
didn't have to go through any of this right now,
especially in such a tough time of the season, but
you obviously have to handle family first. Yeah, no question
about it. Joey Bosa joining us on the Doug Gotlips
Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, so now you
(48:46):
get a chance to go into New England right like,
and look, dude, football is what you do. Football is
what your family does right between your brother, your dad,
Like you guys love this stuff. Um, what's what? What's
the honest emotions inside your brain, inside your chest cavity
that you get a chance at Tom Brady and the
Patriots on their home turf. That doesn't make a difference
(49:08):
to me. It's the playoff game, another team on our
way to our goal. And uh, whether it's Tom Brady
or whoever else, it's it's who we have to go
through and who we have to play. So we're gonna
prepare like we have the rest of the year, really
well and attention to detail and effort throughout the week,
and we're gonna play hard, just so we did the
(49:30):
rest of the year. I don't think. I don't think
the playoffs is a time to change anything. Um, you
in Melvin sometimes line up on the same side. Do
you guys have a special call for that is or something?
Because that just has to strike fear in the hearts
of that side of the offensive line. Is there anything
specially that you guys call that little set up? No
name for it, but we we might be running a
(49:51):
little bit this week. I would, I would, I would,
I would guess. Um, look, he's awesome. You're awesome, and
some times your stardom covers up how good he is,
and maybe last week him getting to the quarterback covered
up how good you are. Is there a competitiveness to you?
To you guys, like how did how does it actually
work between the two of you? I wouldn't say there's
(50:13):
much like a much of a competition who's getting more
plays than that. We're just supporting each other and we're
always excited for one another making plays. It's it's a team,
it's a family. It's there's no bad blood with that.
What what? What is it about Derwin James that surprises
even you? Um? I don't know. I mean, he's everybody
(50:39):
sees it. He's unbelievable the way you can cover ground
and make plays. He's just got, you know, a knack
for making plays. And I just think his I guess
what surprises me is his leadership. And he's been doing
a really good job vocally as a leader, which is
something I even have a really hard time doing. So
(51:00):
to see that out of a young young guy is impressive.
How come? How come is it because it's like you're
just you're Is it because you just kind of get
you gotta get your sye self psyched out, and you
gotta you gotta figure out your own game. Is that?
Is that why that's not really your style in terms
of leadership being vocal. I'm just a pretty quiet guy.
Have never really been much to hate people up, So
(51:22):
it's just not really my thing. Joey Bosa joining us
here on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, look,
there's lots of stereotypes of the of Chargers teams of
the past, kicking game seemed like money badgers. Eliminate any
of those stereotypes, and uh soft, you guys are anything
but soft. And then it's hey, they you know, getting
(51:42):
up West coast team getting up early in the morning
on the East coast. You got an early kickoff time.
Is there a secret to that? Is there a secret
to your guys ability to consistently play well early in
the East Coast based upon your West coast body clock? Shoot,
I mean you're the first person to mention that to me. Maiden,
notice that, so, uh, I don't think that crosses our mind.
(52:05):
Once there's no special routine or whatever. We go and
get our sleep and continue with our routine. Joey Bosa
joining us on the Doug Gotlips Show on Fox Sports Radio.
I know, every every football player you have almost say like, Google,
we're just worried about this week. But if you allowed
yourself to imagine, imagine that this could be a super
Bowl team, well, of course, I mean that's the goal
(52:27):
from day one camp. It's the goal of any team
super Bowl. So I mean, if you don't think you're
Super Bowl team, what the hell are you doing? The
all the analysts say, like, look, the secret to Tom
Brady is, you know, you gotta get you know, he
likes to get on his spot, right, Like, he's not
super mobile, but he's mobile within that pocket. But he
gots to have to force him off his spot. That's
(52:49):
hound if everyone knows how to do it, why can't
more people do it? I mean that's a pretty general
description of how to stop somebody get him off the spot,
isn't really the answer. Has still have to beat your
one on ones any stuff to get back there by
the time he gets rid of the ball. So he's
one of the best ever decision making and getting rid
(53:11):
of the ball. So that's all that comes in as well. Hey, listen, Joey,
we wish you safe travels uh and continued health and success.
Can't wait to see how you guys played this weekend.
Thanks so much for being our guest. Yeah, thank you,
thanks for having me pleasures. It's Joey Bosa of the
l A Chargers joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show

Only three quarters forty one points? But everybody's gotten wrong
(53:34):
about this offseason? Why it seems so obvious to me?
I'll explain that upcoming next. But first, you know, um,
if you're looking for a new car, there's a very
smart and easy way to do it because you worry
about trading in and do you get the right value
for your trading right here? Done that? Like, I don't
(53:54):
want trade in my car. I don't get but I
don't want to list my car and go through all
the I got you in. In sports, a trade can

Kyle Kuzma had forty one in three quarters last night,
forty one in three quarters last night, forty one in
three quarters last night, and um, look, there is this
(56:05):
assumption last year that the Lakers were making making a
fatal mistake, fatal mistake in not moving their younger pieces
in order to load up for Lebron James and make
a run this year and at the time, and again
this is about being ahead of it a little bit,
(56:26):
and I still feel like I'm ahead of it. At
the time, Um, at the time, I truly believed that
their plan was to see who had it, who could evolve,
who could improve, who was with them as long as
they want to be with them, and who was movable,
(56:51):
who was a dog, and who was more of a beta,
and that Lebron wasn't winning a title this year anyway,
but they could be competitive for a title by the
end of the season, make an addition or two instead
of shedding the roster of all their young talent and
club control contracts. Is that Is that an accurate depiction,
(57:12):
Ryan Music of what I said this offseason before they
ever played a game, I would say that it's accurate, yes, um,
And it's played out as such. Where Kuzma, though I
don't know if he's a true number two, I don't
think he's a true number too Lebron. If he's your
third best player and your second best score or you know,
(57:33):
or your third best score, you get yourself a hell
of a team. And the other part is this, and
this is the big part, is so many people said
they don't have enough shooting. Now, you can be right
and be wrong at the same time, I would agree
that to win an NBA title, they don't have enough shooting.
(57:57):
On the other hand, things don't means we're not in
a static environment. We're not in a static environment. You
improve and if you stay at a status if you
if you don't improve, that means you haven't worked in
your game. And the logic behind the Laker the young
(58:17):
Lakers improving their shooting was, hey, look, the more you
shoot threes, the more you're in an NBA game. For example,
Kyle Kuzma didn't shoot threes in college, so it's only
been a year and a half which he's shooting three
pointers in a game, let alone doing the NBA level.
So he's going to get better. Look at all these
players in the NBA from their first to their fifth year.
Michael Jordan didn't make threes early in his career. He
(58:38):
didn't take him, he didn't make them, and even back
before they emphasized him, he slowly but surely got better.
Magic Johnson couldn't shoot either. And then you factor in
we added in Rondo. We being this is what the
Lakers are thinking. You add in Lebron to outstanding passers
to uh A, Lonzo Ball will only play fifty two games.
Everybody's going to shoot better because you have good path serves.
(59:00):
Good pastors make better shots, better shots being higher percentage.
I still don't think the Lakers are true title contenders.
I still think they're the fourth best team in the West.
But those young guys are further along shooting than people
thought they were going back before the season, and Kuzma
has shown that, like look to ditch. If you're gonna
(59:23):
trade Kuzma, you better get a king's ransom because he's
under contract for two more years at very reasonable terms,
and he's proven to be worthy of at least third
best player on a championship caliber team status. Guys get better,
Guys work in their game, Guys get better playing around
(59:44):
better players. That's actually the way it works. Eight seven
seven nine on Fox is in fact the phone number.
So Dan Buyer was out the past couple of days.
Dan Barro was out in the past couple of days,
and it took me until yesterday. Then I realized, Hey,
(01:00:06):
if Dan is really really sick and he's watching TV,
why don't we send him some movies? To watch. So
yesterday we said, don't come back until you've watched pulp fiction.
Don't come back. And do you watch pulp fiction? Why?
Or did you watch pull fiction the first thirty minutes
of it? So we're a fifth of the way through
(01:00:29):
according to Netflix. Mm hmm. How do we feel about this?
How do we feel about this music? It's better than
not watching it all, so I give him credit for
giving it a try. We talked a little bit during
the break. He said he'll probably pick it back up
at some point down the line. Did you not watch? Well,
(01:00:50):
I don't understand. I don't understand. Is it is it?
Do you have like little A D D. You need
a break, You need to walk around the apartment. This
is this is my deal with movie if I just
am not a guy that wants to commit two and
a half hours to something right at that moment. And
that's was the point. Yesterday you shot the text over
(01:01:11):
and I was laying on the couch and I thought,
all right, well, let's see if Netflix actually has pulp fiction.
Sure enough, it did, so I started to watch and
then I realized that it would be till about local
time here. I'd be invested in this movie until about
five o'clock, and even though I was just laying on
the couch, I just didn't know how invested I was
going to be. And so I watched thirty minutes, saw
(01:01:31):
that there were two hours left to all right, maybe
I'll catch this up. It's not just this movie, it's
other movies as well. That that's why I don't go
and see many. So it had you watched thirty minutes
and press pause and saw there was only an hour left,
do you think you would have finished it? Yeah? I
think I would be more more apt to do so.
(01:01:53):
So it was definitely I hadn't realized how long of
a movie. You know why? You know why you hadn't
realized because it's a good movie, Because it's a great movie.
It's a great movie. I think that's the disturbing part
to it, is like it's a really how did you what?
What part? Did you stop watching it? Um? Right after Travolta,
(01:02:14):
I bought some drugs and then took out the guy's
wife and they were going out to eat. That's about
I still don't know. So you don't know about the
ten dollar milk check yet? No? No, they were walking
into the to the restaurant. You guys see, Travolta has
has has ditched the ditch the two payes. He's gone
totally bald. Yeah. Yeah, that's so he's halfway to be
(01:02:39):
in the real Travolta. I still don't know what's going on,
by the way, in the first thirty minutes, so you
don't know what's going on until the end of the movie.
That's that's how the movies, that's how the right is
that music? Is that a fair first scene? They robbed
his diner, and I don't now thirty minutes later, I
haven't seen anything. Don't worry. As as the motion that
John's making, it'll all come full circle. Yeah, it's it's
(01:03:00):
part of the magic of that. So seven months from now,
when you eventually finish it in thirty minute increments, it'll
all make sense. Hm okay. And then I said Usual
Suspects would be the next movie he should watch. It's
a good one. It's a good one, right, rolmost you
okay with that? Like the Usual Suspects? Yes you do, yes,
(01:03:23):
John texted to me, Porky's so, oh, that's what it was.
That's what Porky's revenge. I believe that two Porkies revenged.
Now let's check in with Dan Buyer Doug News in
the NFL Today. Pittsburgh Post Gazette did an interview with
Pittsburgh Steelers president Arn't Rooney the second and in that interview,
(01:03:44):
Rooney said all options would be on the table involving
wide receiver Antonio Brown, except releasing the wide receiver. Went
going a little bit further. Yes, Rooney said that he
would not envision Brown being with the team when training
camp started in July. News out of Pittsburgh. Bruce arians
the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He
(01:04:05):
was once in Pittsburgh leading the offense with Ben Roethlisberger
at the helm. Now he gets to control Jamis Winston
as his quarterback, pressure whatsoever. I wanted to relax and
play the game. Talents, no issue. It's just becoming a
little bit smarter. He's gonna be coached as well. I
think he's he's ever been and more prepared than he's
ever been. It's his team, and I'll tell our players
in the first meeting, this isn't my team, it's your team.
(01:04:26):
Will be as good as you want to be. Vic
Vane Fangio's team is now the Denver Broncos with Case
Keenum as his quarterback. Right now, Case Keenum is our
quarterbacks and I've had the good fortune of seeing him
at the best in his career when he played for
Minnesota last year, being in our division at the time,
So I know what he's capable of, and we're gonna
try and get that out of him. Ohio State quarterback

tamp martell Is submitted his name into the nt double,
a transfer portal, which allows other schools to contact him.

All right, let's welcome to Edward Or, who, of course,
uh Edward Or is in terms of legendary reporters covering
any sports league, He's on anyone's list, And um, uh
Edward Or. You can fall him on Twitter at edward
(01:05:55):
or r f A and check out the dooms Day podcast.
Edward joined on the Dug Outip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
what what higher has? Uh? What what higher? Have? The
most people texted you about kind of perking up their
ears in terms of their level of interest in intrigue
and how it plays out so far in the NFL, Well,
(01:06:15):
I would say the two that have gotten the most
attention are Cliff Kingsbury and Freddie Kitchens. I mean Kitchens
is an interesting story because he went from running backs
coach to offensive coordinator to head coach in the span
of ten weeks in in Cleveland, but Kingsbury probably exceeds
all just because of the fact that he has no
NFL coaching you know, background whatsoever. And obviously, the Arizona
(01:06:41):
Cardinals drafted a quarterback in Josh Rosen in the first
round last year, and they were across the board, uh,
terrible on offense, ranking last and nearly every important category.
And so you know, now the question is how much
of these new concepts that we've seen brought to the
(01:07:03):
NFL by so many college coaches, how in vogue are
they're going to be as Cliff Kingsbury tries to build
um success with the Arizona Cardinals, doesn't it. One of
the things that's interesting about NFL as opposed to college
is it doesn't actually matter what the media things like
we can sit here and crush a higher or support
a higher or whatever. But like, you don't have to
(01:07:25):
recruit in college, you don't have to have donors, like
the people you hired hired you believe in you enough,
and you put together team, you put together roster, and
it's either whether you win or you whether you don't.
It's not there's that public sentiment doesn't play nearly the
park that it does in college. That fair. Well, you
just you still have to sell you know, suites and
um and season tickets, and you want the community behind you. Obviously,
(01:07:46):
you want to be create interest in your franchise and
you want to be playing you know, primetime television games
and so forth. But yeah, you're right, you don't have
to go out recruit players quite the same way. I mean,
I guess you could argue that you do have to
recruit some you know, potential free agents, and the better
prospects your team has, the more likely they are to
sign with you for reasonable amounts of money. And that
(01:08:08):
if you're a really bad team that the player doesn't
have a lot of faith in, then it may cost
you significantly more than it might cost a competitive team.
Who's gonna be his defensive coordinators? Give me vance, Joseph, Well,
he interviewed there today. Uh. And that's that's the other
thing I think Kings buries up against, is it he
doesn't really have a roster of you know, NFL experienced
(01:08:29):
coaches to to work with. It. It's gonna have to
be somebody that he's unfamiliar with. If you want somebody
that's experienced in the NFL h Vance Joseph also is
in play as a potential head coach in Cincinnati. He
interviewed for that job and there you know, obviously Chicago
now needs a defensive coordinator with Nick Fangio leaving, so uh,
he'll probably have a couple of different choices. UM. I
(01:08:52):
would say the coordinator's job in Arizona is is probably
not the number one, uh job available to defensive coaches
out there. I think most people would prefer working with
the Bears talent. And uh, you know the kind of
the trajectory of that franchise right now. What why is
Mike McCarthy still to work. Well, he's still out of
work because he has decided that he you know, he's
(01:09:12):
the only Super Bowl winning coach that was available out
there who was interviewing, and he limited the scope of
his interest to pretty much the New York Jets uh
and no one else. And once the Jets hired Adam
Gaze yesterday over him, Uh, he's decided that he's going
to sit out the twenty nineteen season and make his
nine million dollars this year from Green Bay and try
to re enter the market a year from now. Interesting
(01:09:34):
Edward are joining us in the Doug Gotlips Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Gaze gets fired in Miami, Miami,
and since today, the two of that haven't made a
higher What does Miami do? Well? You know, the fact
that there's been this frenzy of coaching hires in the
last forty eight hours, what is it six teams have
hired coaches in the last forty eight hours, and that
the Dolphins are are among the ones that have not
(01:09:56):
yet moved makes me think that it's somebody whose teams
currently active in the playoffs. Uh. And they interviewed Christopher
Shard from the Cowboys, who's technically not the defensive coordinator
but works with Rod Barrinelli as his top assistant and
does make the defensive calls. UH. Stephen Ross and Chris Career,
the general manager of the Dolphins, were both at the
(01:10:18):
stadium last week who and watched as the Cowboys beat
the Seahawks and pretty much frustrated Russell Wilson for you know,
three and a half quarters before they were able to
create much offense in the game. So I think he
would interview exceptionally well based on my interactions with him, UH,
and based on expectations that you know, other people who
know him we'll have so it wouldn't surprise me if
(01:10:38):
he Shard winds up Dolphin's job. The Cowboys are fascinating
as they went from you know, go back to lass
off season where they where Jerry Jones made you know
and and Steven Jones made uh, Jason Garrett made coaching
changes in terms of position coaching changes right, made a
bunch of additions, um, and then you know, mid season
they obviously go out and get him Are Cooper. But
(01:11:00):
there was some talk of a lot of unhappiness. Now
you win a home game against the Seahawks, a team
and a franchise everybody respects. What's the state of the
Cowboys as a now, well, there's there's obviously a lot
of momentum. And you do have to give Jerry Jones
and the front office credit for this concept that seemed
like failed idea in the off season of keeping the
(01:11:23):
head coach and keeping the two coordinators and changing out
assistant coaches and thinking it was going to produce significantly
different results. It's it's not something I'm familiar that anybody
else has ever really tried. But they brought in san
Jay Lal as a receiver's coach, and I would say
that he's contributed significantly. And then we already talked about
Chris Rochard. They did make another move UH with their
(01:11:45):
coaching staff, which was unprecedented at the time when they
were three and four UH and there by week, in
addition to trading for Mari Cooper, they also fired their
offensive line coach and elevated Mark Colombo, who was the
assistant the former player, and brought back Hudson Howke, who
was the offensive line coach back in their nineties dynasty
years and it's one of the most highly regarded offensive
line coaches in the NFL as an advisor, and I
(01:12:07):
think they changed the technique with which the offensive linemen
we're playing UH to a way that they're more comfortable,
more successful, and so I wouldn't discount the success the
success that's been either. And you mentioned to Mary Cooper,
obviously that completely changed the dynamics of the offense. But
they also don't get full credit for that move, Gips,
because while they were the ones who went in to
the season with this idea that Alan Hearns could be
(01:12:29):
a lead receiver and they really don't need a number
one receiver in the NFL to succeed on offense that
was proven quickly wrong, and they admitted their mistake at
least and went out and made the trade from Mart. Yeah,
it's funny. We went to their camp and that's what
they're trying to ensemble. Cast will find the mismatch. And
we were sitting there watching going like I don't I'm not,
I don't buy it and all and all they talked
about was how dominant their defense was. Well, no, wonder,
(01:12:51):
their defense looks so dominant. He's practices. Everybody's defense looked
dominant against the cowboy offense. Are we on? Yeah? Um,
what is Dack's value going to be to Jared? Jerry
wants to resign him. DA's gonna want a bunch of money.
But there's you know, like, what does that exactly mean?
I mean, is there going to be a three or
a two? We're talking about million? Were they gonna keep
(01:13:14):
in the teens? Like what is Jerry may want to
resign him, but what is the actual number? You think
that he's thinking, well, this is the first offseason that
they can change his rookie contract, and so this it
makes this post season, Doug the last one where the
Cowboys have the ultimate advantage in putting together a competitive team,
which is you know, UH, winning quarterback on a rookie contract.
(01:13:36):
What that next number is going to be, I think
is yet to be determined by you know, how he
continues to play going forward in this postseason. What he
did the other night in the fourth quarter, uh is
fairly incredible. Um. You know, he only completed two passes
in the fourth quarter, but they were both big plays
to a Marii Cooper uh. And then he had the
two incredible runs. And I just don't think I think
(01:13:58):
his importance to the oregan zation and winning UH really
exceeds what he does as a passer or even what
he does as a runner on the field. It's more
what he does in the locker room and the faith
and the conviction that he inspires among these guys with
the plays like you saw on the third and fourteen
you know, run uh and he flips over trying to
(01:14:20):
score UH. You know, he would not have ever had
this job as a rookie had started every game since
he's been drafted by the Cowboys if not for two things,
if not for Tony Romo injuring his back in the
preseason against Seattle, and if not for his ability to
inspire his teammates to the point that they were all
on board with him remaining the starter after Romo was healthy.
(01:14:42):
That's the kind of uh, you know, chemistry that he
has created in that locker room going to be fascinating
to see how to do against the Rams. I felt
like Todd Gurley was a little defensive when asked about
his knee yesterday. Is that a is that a fair
way of of of reliance? Well, he said something like,
I'm just eager to get back out there and see
how it does. Um, you know, actually, you know, I'm
(01:15:05):
wondering if there's not more to this, uh than we know.
And and here's why. First of all, today is the
first day he's not listed on the injury report, So
the first two days of practice he's limited. By the
time they played the game on Saturday night, Hill have
essentially not played in the game for over a month.
And and you have you know, you can't you can't
(01:15:25):
minimize his importance to his team. He's led the NFL
in touchdowns with twenty one. And yet you have Sean
McVeigh talking about achieving some kind of balance against the
Cowboys using him in C J. Anderson. I mean, really,
you're a street free agent who comes in, even with
Anderson's record of success as a veteran player, and has
two good games against two bad defenses. All of a sudden,
(01:15:47):
you're thinking about how to take carries away from Girley
and give them to C. J. Anderson. That doesn't make
sense to me. To me, that indicates that they're concerned
about his health beyond what we know. All right, help
me out with the Antonio Brown situation. As of now,
there's talking Pitts that Big Ben is willing to restructure
his deal so that if they trade Antonio Brown and
take that twenty one n into our cap it, it
(01:16:07):
doesn't hurt them nearly as badly. Uh, what are you
hearing in terms of Antonio Brown and where he'll play
next year? Well, I mean, I don't know that the
perception that Ben Roethlisberger is making this allowance that he'll
restructure his contract to create cap space is being done
specifically so that the organization can rid itself of Antonio
(01:16:28):
Brown after he basically skipped out on his teammates in
a must win Week seventeen game. I mean, I think
there's gonna be a financial benefit to Ben Roethlisberger in
this deal too, And that's why, as much as anything,
he's willing to do it now, does he want Antonio
Brown in his locker room? That I can't say, but
I imagine that there were a good number of Steelers
(01:16:49):
who felt like Antonio Brown betrayed their trust. Uh, And
it would be a difficult endeavor for the Steelers to
put him back in that locker room again next year,
even though he led the NFL with being touchdown catches
this year. And and you know the hierarchy today, Uh,
the Rootys talked about they are not going to be
let being encumbered by the salary cap affect their ultimate
(01:17:10):
decision on what to do with Antonio Brown. In other words,
if we decide that he's a bad fit chemistry and
he's toxic in the locker room, then we will jettison
him in a trade or just release him if necessary.
But but money will not prevent us from doing what
we think is the right, necessary thing. He's Edward or

Undisputed talking about uh A game last night between the
Rockets and the Bucks and measuring up be honest versus
the Beard. They're probably right now because of injuries to
other guys. Lebron Kauai is not playing back to back
(01:18:58):
stuff was hurt. They're probably that's front runners for m
v P. I like Yannice more in the playoffs, just
looking at the way they played because his he scores
so much easier, you know, like he's in the post,
he's getting stuff inside and hardened. Shooting those threes can
take away your legs, and maybe that's I don't know
if it's nerves or if it's fatigued, but we've seen
(01:19:21):
him struggle late in the you know, in playoff rounds,
in big games, and I think that could be because
you're shooting so many threes that your legs can wear out,
and it is so difficult every time down he has
to create for himself and everybody else, like his handle
is sweet, But to do that every time down like
to shake up a great defender who's right in front
(01:19:43):
of me, and that's that can wear you down mentally
and physically. So going forward, I would like I think
I trust Janice a little more in the playoffs, and
I was more impressed by him last night. Look, they're
just different players, right. Jannice Is has no position and
uh seems to have an almost limitless ceiling, but the
(01:20:04):
ceiling is lower now because he can't make shots. He's
not as nearly as good as shooter as James Harden.
He also affects the affects the game a lot more
at the defensive end then James Harden does. On the
other hand, Harden has the ball in his hands and
it's not only incredibly effective score, but he's also a
very good passer and oh yeah, by the way, his
ability to get to the free throw line helps his
(01:20:24):
team at both ends because it takes oftentimes one of
the best players off the floor for the other team. UM,
I would still still go with Hardened ahead of Janice.
I just I he makes more shots, makes more plays.
Janice is still a bit of a tease and once
you get to the playoffs. It's it becomes a shot
(01:20:46):
maker's game more than anything else. Doug Gottlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio, and I'm fired up for this week,
fired up for the football games. I I felt like,
and I said this a little bit on air, I
said it on Twitter, I felt like the college football
playoffs should have been played, the championship should have been
played tonight. I just I know part of it is
(01:21:08):
it was basically in southern game, you know, but I
just we came off of the games last weekend and
we needed at least a day, at least a data right.
We didn't have that, And you know, you just you
can only the brain only works where you can have
so much football going on, and Thursday night it's a
(01:21:29):
big TV viewer night. I would have liked it to
beat tonight. But now we had the build up in
the NFL, and I'm super excited for you got Saturday games,
and you got and you got Sunday games. But it
is fascinating how like all of these things are related,
all these coaches having some sort of offensive game plan
to work with the quarterback. And Kyler Murray, who's gonna
(01:21:50):
submit his name for the NFL draft again. It's all
because the league has changed, evolved, protected the quarterback, made
it an offensive league, and it's allowed you know, college
guys to get in his coaches, college style quarterbacks to
get in his players. And it's caused NFL teams to
rethink their philosophy of hey, let's get a defensive minded
(01:22:12):
coach and grind it out. Speaking of new head coaches,
b A. Bruce arians gonna join us up coming next.
It's a fascinating guy, all right. He literally wrote the
book on working with quarterbacks, and between Ben Rothsburger and
Andrew Luck and heck, even if you go to the
(01:22:33):
mess they end he end up inheriting in Arizona, quarterbacks
were always better for having worked with him. Uh, why
come back? Why Jamis Winston? And does does? I'm gonna
ask him if he buys into the idea that Jamis
has a lot of big bend in him both on
and off the field, and how he fixes that. And
(01:22:53):
I gotta ask him about his health concerns. You know,
he he retired because of his health. It wasn't looked
like he went and did P ninety X. So I mean,
like all of a sudden, you just how do you
how do you maintain the health games that he's made

How brother? I'm great. You know last year this time
I met you at Fox and you know, look, it
(01:24:16):
was it was health. It was a lot of things
that caused you to walk away from the Cardinals. Did
you do P ninety X? If you done yoga? Like
I I heard what you said. You you had a
good health report, Like, what did you do to change
your health? I just got healthy, but I gained twenty pounds.
I gotta get rid of that, that's for sure. Yeah.
I fail at retirement miserably. Um. Okay, So here's my thing.
(01:24:39):
I tell guys all the time. If you really want
to retire, you know what you shouldn't do. You shouldn't
go call games because when you're sitting because because because
you know it works, like, you go and you you
meet with each team, the coaches, you watch a bunch
of film. Then you're at the game and you almost
miss the losing as much as you missed the winning.
You missed the locker room, You miss the guys. If
(01:25:01):
you're in the studio, it's sterile. You're not really in
the sport. Do you think that's one of the things
covering games for CBS that brought you back to the
sports so quickly. Oh, there's no doubt. You know, going
to practice every Friday, and uh, I think it was
week eight or nine. I actually almost stepped on the
field to correct somebody one being my team. I was like, oh,
this is the fire just started burning and burning. Doing
(01:25:21):
all the production meetings with the players, and uh, you know,
then the opportunity came and couldn't have been happier. Um.
I remember when he came out and early in his
career people compared Jamis um to two big Ben, right,
big body sometimes held on the bottom ball too long
because you couldn't bring him down, and sometimes I would
(01:25:43):
get him in trouble where he tried he turned the
football over, trying to you know, force the square peg
into a round hole. And then you know, look he's
had some off the field stuff and Ben had some
off the field stuff early in his career as well.
Is that a fair parallel a guy who knows quarterbacks
as well as you, Is there a fair parallel of
Big Ben rob spging to Jameis Winston. Oh, I don't
I don't own the field. I think they're a little
(01:26:04):
bit different. I mean, Ben Ben has one and been proven,
and he's got that Superman cape that no plays ever dead.
I think Jamis is on his way. Uh, he's just
gotta get a little more consistent. Like I said, he
got those wow plays and then those other wows, and
I just got to get rid of those interceptions that
I think he tries a little bit too hard at
times to to to prove he belongs when he just
(01:26:27):
relaxed and play. You're the man. You're gonna don't don't
worry about it, play smarter, not scared. Um. Look, also
chatting around the league and covering the league this year,
You're a guy who I'm sure picked up some things.
Is there anything that you are going to change from
last time around with Arizona? With Indie even in that
you watch things, you watch different ways of doing different stuff,
(01:26:49):
and you thought, hey, my next shot, I want to
try this. Yeah, there were there were you know, saying
everybody practice every Friday. Uh. There were good ones or
bad ones or things you liked about him. Um. I
was shocked to know that Bill Belichick might have been
the first guy to have music at practice and uh so, yeah,
Tom Brady said, yeah, we've been doing this for gosh
ten years and get out of here. And so I'm
(01:27:11):
not a music guy, so the players are gonna have
to talk me into that one. But yeah, there was
a lot of things that I picked up. How I
listened to your press conference and you know, you talked
about it being their team, you know, empowering those players.
But there's like, look, they there's a trust there, Like
you gotta you have to have the right players if
you want to turn the foot turn the team over
(01:27:31):
to them, because if you don't have the right culture
sometimes that can go awry. Um, how did how do
they earn that trust? Is there anything you have to
do to earn that trust from you so you can
turn the team over to them? No, I think it's
it's there. I'm gonna tell him the first player that's
their team if they want to win. I'm don't have
any magic speeches that's gonna turn the center a winner.
(01:27:52):
They have to decide they want to win and and
now show them a plan on how to do it.
What's the biggest challenge in doing that? I don't really
don't think it's never been a problem. Um, you know,
it was either offense or than in India was the
whole team after But we did it Chuck's way there,
So it's really just Arizona and and it worked real well.
So I don't think we should change the blueprint at all.
You know, they've said, I don't know if you've you've
(01:28:13):
heard this. A lot of guys in my job have said, Hey,
look at all these coaches. They are all young and
good looking. You gotta like being lumped into that group, right,
You're like, yeah, young and exactly like me, sixty six
and sexier than ever. Isn't that amazing? Though? How long
it took for you to finally get an opportunity and
now you take a year off and you're fighting them
off and you get to pick your opportunity. This is
(01:28:35):
a crazy business you work in. It's crazy business. I'm
really happy for Vic fangioe uh, he deserved this for
a long time. Yeah, Vic Fangio gets a shot. You
get another shot with the team. What was it about
the Buccaneers organization which intrigued you? It starts with ownership.
Really really was impressed with the ownership. Then the general
(01:28:55):
manager who takeson lie to I know, good friend and
an excellent evaluator. So when you have good ownership and
you've got a GM that you can work together with,
and you put your coaches in your scouts all on
the same page, then you make good buccaneer decisions and
there's no power struggling who who Who picked the guy
in the draft? Who cares he's the best player for
the Bucks And that's that's the way we're gonna do it.
(01:29:16):
You know. One of the things that you are famous
for is like, look, you want your quarterbacks to take
shots down the field. And as much as it's a
quarterback driven league, a lot of these guys are dinking
and dunking a lot of this. You know, it's within
ten yards of the line of scrimmage. What are your
thoughts on on the next trend in terms of passing,
the next trend in offense in the NFL? What else
(01:29:36):
should we expect to see, not just from your team
but from the league as we head forward. Well, I think, yeah,
I think the long ball is always going to stay
in it and in our in our offense, there's a short,
there's a medium, and there's a long bowl and the
coverage dictates, but don't be afraid to take it when
it's there. Bruce arians joining us in the Doug Gotlips
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, all right, look, we're
(01:29:58):
looking at games this weekend. I'm gonna I'm to put
you have your analysts cap on back before you put
your football cap on. You talked about Bill Belichick, the
guy you got to cover this year. I've seen the
Chargers a bunch, and man, they got a ton of talent,
and they got Philip Rivers, a guy who is a
tremendous Hall of Fame caliber quarterback. But but there's something
how how do the Patriots do it when it doesn't
(01:30:20):
look like their talent is what it used to be.
How have they been able to maintain this level of dominance. Yeah,
a great coaching and they got they got a really
good players. I mean, the one thing about the Patriots
that they take players they like might not be rated
high by some draft analyst. But Bill loves that guy
and they play well for him. It's gonna be a
(01:30:40):
great game, I think, which is seen in the playoffs
right now. You see quarterbacks. Everybody's got a quarterback, and
everybody talks about defense and running game. They don't have
a quarterback, you ain't winning in the playoffs. B A, Listen,
we're so happy to have you back in the NFL.
You're always entertaining, your teams play a fun style, and
you know how to emphasize that quarterback. I can't wait
to see what you can do with James miss Thanks
for joining us on Fox Sports Radio. Thanks appreciate you.
(01:31:03):
All right, that's be A. That's uh. Bruce arians new
head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, back in the
side of that crazy right like he went. He went
till he's a senior citizen. Before he got a job,
and now he has his second job after retiring. In
between jobs, Nuts Doug Gotli Show brought to you by Farmers.
At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we know how
to cover almost anything when it's game time. Have an
(01:31:25):
experienced player to help you stay ahead of the game.
Put their experience into play at Farmers dot Com. Farmers.
I also would tell you that I was ahead of
it with Jamis Winston. I have never been a ditch
Jamis guy, and I know it's very easy. There's many
times in his career that it's been easy for you,
as a fan of football to say, why don't you
just get rid of Jamis Winston. I would even though
(01:31:48):
whatever he did in Arizona with the uber driver that
wasn't two thousand sixteen again, does it make it okay? No?
But if he did in facts drinking after that he
has cleaned up his life, and he did, he was
clearly the better quarterback if you actually watch the Buccaneers. Now, look,
(01:32:08):
if James can't make it work in the last year
of his deal playing for Bruce Arians, nobody can make
it work, right. I'm just if you can't make it
work with a guy who has like, go back and
look at his track record with quarterbacks, literally wrote the
book you can't make it work there that that's a
you problem. That's a you problem. Are the Steelers ready
(01:32:32):
to move on from Antonio Brown and wait to hear
with their own red to say that's next? Be sure
to catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show

(01:33:17):
So I would say, I would guess that we we
read into people saying things when they don't actually say things. Right,
Ramos does this because his wife he's been married almost
I think a little bit longer than I've been married. Yeah,
(01:33:38):
music has not been married yet, not yet, Doug. When
your wife, when your wife says she's fine, No, no,
that's fine, that's fine. Now, technically fine means good, right
or I'm good good? What does somebody actually mean when
(01:34:01):
they say fine? Because by definition fine it's just that. Actually,
if you read the definition of fine, you ready for it? Okay?
What music? When I when when you think of the
word fine, your your girlfriend says, how are you this?
Pointing I'm fine? You say fine in text, what does
(01:34:24):
it mean not well? Um? Fine? By definition excellent, first rate, great, outstanding, admirable, quality, superior, splendid, magnificent, beautiful, exquisite, choice, select, prime, supreme.
In other words, by definition, the first adjective, it's fine.
(01:34:46):
Now if it's an adverb, oh, fine, not quite the same?
Not quite the same? Um, this is what? Arn't Rooney
the second who, of course, the Steelers president, had to
say about the possibility of releasing Antonio Brown. So they're
(01:35:09):
not gonna release Antonio Brown, but all other options are
on the table. He even went so far to say
it would be hard to envision Brown being with the
Steelers when their portrait training camp in July. There's not
much we can do right now. We have time to
make a decision. We'll have to look at all options.
We're not going to release him. That's not on the table,
but I will say that other options, all other options
(01:35:31):
are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled
and have him back on the team next year, We're
a long way from thinking that can happen. We're not
closing the door on anything at this point now, he said,
We're a long way but He did not say we
are past that point, did he? He said, all options
(01:35:53):
are on the table except releasing it. So what are
the actual options keeping on our trade? To him, reconciling
or not reconciling, those are the only real options there.
And since they're far past but not completely passed, bringing
it back on the team, he saying, Fine, how's Antonio Brown? Fine,
(01:36:18):
he's not giving we're reading into it now. Do I
think it means that Antonio Brown is probably going to
be traded? I do. But the all options are on
the table is interesting because if you google it and
you type in the New York Giants all options on
(01:36:39):
the table, you'll read that the Giants talked last year
about Odell Beckham Jr. In the exact same way when
he there was video of him, was some unnamed woman
in a hotel room and what looked like Booker Sugar
in there. Right, we want to read we want to
(01:37:00):
read into it. Oh, Odell Beckham Jr. Is gone, All
options are on the table. They end up three months
of good behavior resigning him. Now, look, I thought it
was a mistake to resign him and give him that
huge contract, But three months of good behavior they totally
bought in uh brown schedule to make twenty two point
(01:37:21):
one six five million dollars against the cap. Steelers trade him,
it would still count twenty one point one million dollars
against their cap, twelve point six million dollars in salaries,
seven million dollars prorated signing bonus, two point five million
dollar roster bonus. However, the Steelers would save fifteen million
dollars in actual real money, hurting the cap, but save you.
(01:37:42):
And remember they saved fourteen million dollars they set aside
for Levian Bell. They thought Levin is gonna show up.
It's fourteen million dollars. So they're actually saving money on
the deal, depending on what they bring back in return
and what kind of draft pick they get. It just
inhibits their ability to fill out the roster with more
talented players, but it helps them in terms of the wallet.
(01:38:05):
Doesn't cost money, just money they can't actually spend. And
there's talk to Ben Roethlisberger's restructuring his deal, and I
thought Edward brought up a great point like, look, it's
big Ben Roethlisberger doing it because it might help the
team move Antonio Brown. Sure, but it's also helping Ben
Roethlisberger's that's who Ben is. Hey, you know what, Uh, yeah,
(01:38:27):
you know what. I'll sign an extension just to help
the team. That's what I'll do. That's me. That's kind
of guy. I am Ben Roethlisberger. Team guy. Team guy.
That's me. Does that mean so fascinated by this? What
happens with Antonio Brown? And what do you get back
(01:38:47):
in return? Yeah? First round pick is probably the pick
that you get. But then you need a player as well,
don't you So some sort of player and the first
round pick and if you're another team, do you do it?
Fascinating to see. Can you imagine him with the Patriots?
(01:39:08):
I don't think they trad him to the Patriots. And
he makes too much money, so it's got to be
a team that's willing to absorb the money and the ego,
and you're empowering him if you trade for him. I
don't think he goes. You know, the teams with a
bunch of cap space are the Colts, the Jets, the Niners,
(01:39:29):
the Raiders, And I don't think he goes out of
the first three. He's obviously said he You know, you
start following the forts that makes people think that's where
you want to go. Yes, rhyme music, quick little the
Colts that have a ton of caps space. How crazy
would it be if Antonio Brown and le Van Bell
end up in the Colts no longer on the Steelers,
(01:39:51):
just as a random post, probably almost zero percent chance
that actually happens, that they trade for him and then
signed a huge Bell. I just can't see them doing that.
I can I could be wrong with Chris Ballard, but
Ballard seems to me to be a guy who completely
understands how to build a team. He's got Marlon Mack,
who's he's not Levian Bell, but he's good. He's fine.
He's young, much younger, much cheaper. I could see them
(01:40:14):
adding more wide receiving talent. I just I feel like
the cults are gonna sprinkle it all around. I think
that's kind of the secret to what they're gonna try.
But back to the Steelers, do you think that they're
at a point now where they've they're basically on the
other end of you know this, Levy, the Big Three,
the Killer Bees, the Big Ben, Levan Bell, Antonio Brown,
(01:40:37):
That era, if you will, is done and for as
talented as we all claimed them to always be, which
they were talented, they really didn't get a whole lot
out of it. Kind of more disappointment than actual success.
There's a lot of Washington Nationals to him, right, do
you but do you think that the team now looks
at that situation and they're like, man, we dealt with
(01:40:58):
a ton of off the field drama nonsense, and they're
looking matter they have. Bartavis Bryant got suspended several times
over late, right, and and Bartavis Bryant was like, oh,
he's like Randy Moss. So do you think that he
was never eligible on the field and they finally got
rid of him, Like they got to be looking at
this situation going okay, we tried the whole we'll take on.
I think I think this has soured them. This has
(01:41:20):
soured them on the big I think they will turn
into some version of the Patriots in the very short
term future, which is like, you know what, if you're
a big name and you become a superstar and you
want big names, superstar money, We're gonna get rid of
you a year early, supposed to feeding your ego. That's
what I think, and that's who they've always been by
the way, it's been more defensive players and offensive players.
(01:41:42):
But that's who they've always been, and they've always kind
of had just kind of grinded out offensive players. You know,
heinz Ward who couldn't you know, couldn't couldn't run, but
could really block and could catch and was just solid
and Drome Bettis. Remember even when they got Jerome Bettis, Like,
here's what people forget. Ralmos knows this. Jerome Bettis was
a superstar early in his career with the Rams. He
(01:42:04):
was Rookie of the Year. He was great, and then
people thought he was done and he kind of remade himself,
reinvented himself. When they got Jerome Bettis, they got him
on the cheap. Like Jerome Bettis wasn't a superstar when
they got him, and you know they didn't they want
a super Bowl in Detroit with Jerome Bettis is Fro'm
not sure if you're aware of that. But by then
he was well past his prime. So they're not used
to overpaying for guys in their prime. It's not what
(01:42:28):
they that's not who they are, that's not how they're constructed.
And I'm sure this sours them. It I'm sure, it's
sours them on it, like, man, we can't ever do
that again ever. And there's some other factors that hurt them, right,
the catch rule being changed that hurt them. Ryan Shazier
getting hurt that really hurt him last year. Um, you know,
(01:42:53):
I thought, you know, Dick Lebou who's out there and available.
But like Dick Lebo's philosophy became a bit dated and
people knew how to knew how to beat it. Ben
was was hurt often like a lot of these things.
A lot of these things derailed him. Legan Bell got
legitimately hurt when you're and they lost in the playoffs.
(01:43:16):
But yeah, I'm I'm with you. I think when you
have a big three and they can't get along, and
you know, one wanted to be overpaid and they wouldn't
do it. One was overpaid, but he became a malcontent
and Roethlisberger, as good as he is, does turn it
over a lot. And remember he was threatening to retire.
He had issues with the offensive coordinator, Todd Hayley will
get rid of like just it's one of those things.
(01:43:37):
You're like, man, that wasn't even fun. We should have
had a couple of Super Bowls, and we didn't get
any out of those guys. And if you, if you,
if you research any of this stuff, and I hate
to credit myself, but I will. Last year, Um, early
(01:43:58):
in the year, Richard Sureman was going at Russell Wilson
and I was like, hey, Richard Sherman is a great player,
but there are a lot more cornerbacks walking on earth.
Then there are quarterbacks walking on the face of this earth.
You're replaceable. Russell Wilson's not what the Seahawks do. They
stood by Russell Wilson, stood by and stood by Russell Wilson.
(01:44:24):
And then, um, it looks like the Pittsburgh steo is
are gonna do the same thing. Stick by the coach,
stick by the quarterback. Figure everything else, out Lets get
to damn buy or find out what else? Quoting on
the Wild Sports Dan block going on Doug including with
the Lakers. Not only is Lebron James the leading vote
getter and voting for next month's NBA All Star Game,
but the forward is also gonna need some more time
(01:44:47):
to rest. Lakers released a statement giving an update on
James's condition, saying that he's ramping up on court activity,
but he'll be re evaluated on Wednesday as he's still
dealing with that injured groin. So Lebron is gonna miss
the next three games for the Lakers. A bunch of
news in the NFL. You were just talking about the
Antonio Brown situation in Pittsburgh. More news from the a
(01:45:07):
f C North Vance. Joseph expected to be with speak
with the Cleveland Browns about their defensive coordinator vacancy. Joseph
also interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals. According to the NFL
Network and the SPNs is former Giant said coach Ben
McAdoo is going to interview with the Cardinals as a
possibility to join Cliff Kingsbury staff. NFL Network did side
sources close to the Cardinals who did not a report
(01:45:28):
that the team would trade quarterback Josh Rosen, saying that
it's quote Ludacris end quote The Athletic reporting that Alabama
co offensive coordinator Josh Gaddis is going to Michigan to
be their offensive coordinator. Well, in Las Vegas police there
have a warrant out for the DNA of soccer star
Christiano Ronaldo in connection with the rape investigation dating back

are to a one year deal. We'll be back to
the Doug Gottlieb Show in ten seconds. But first, a
word from farmers. My dog accidentally flooding a living room
to a dog taking a joy ride, We've covered it.
Talked to farmers. We know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. We are Farmers underwritten
(01:46:11):
my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable
in every state. Dog back to you, Doug gott Leaves
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. You know it's it's interesting.
Vic Fangio's who's a really good coach, kind of a curmudgeon,
a little bit right, like you know him. He's just
like we we met with him before his Bears took
(01:46:34):
on the Dolphins and I wouldn't say who who was
on our crew was like, man, like this this and
this is back early in the season. They're really dominating
teams and it was like the eighty five Bears And
the look on his face is like, what are you
talking about? Hey? It is a nice this is a
good defense. Like the five Bears is like the best,
(01:46:55):
the best, the earmark for the best defense maybe a
modern football history. So keep it in mind. He's a
little bit of a curmudgeon. He got his first head
coaching job with the Denver Broncos, was announced earlier today.
Here's Vic Bangio. We have to evolve on defense to
defend what the offenses are doing. So there has been evolution.
And the biggest evolution in football that's happened in the
(01:47:17):
last few years is you don't see fullbacks on the
field much, which I'm not saying is right or wrong.
You're seeing three wide receivers on the field. So the
game's trend it towards the speed of the wide receivers
and spreading it out. Yeah, it's speed. I talked to
Josh Rosen about this. Josh Rosen, I said, what's the
difference in college and pro? And He's like, everybody looks
the same. It's like, you know, the only difference is
(01:47:38):
the numbers. Like everybody's six one to six four two
D five or two pounds. You know, Mike, linebackers WI
should be two hundred fifty pounds any more because you've
got to be able to run, play and and hit,
but really really run like cowboys, like Cowboys modern day defense.
(01:48:00):
But but but there's you know, you get land Laton Vanderesh,
you get Jalen Smith, and all of a sudden you
can cover those backs with guys that can really really run.
But it's it's interesting with the game evolving and becoming
a more offensive game and mirroring some of the college stuff.
Like there's this mass freak out of people, go, I
can't believe all these guys. It's all about offense, offense, offense.
(01:48:21):
Why aren't you ring defensive guys? Well, defensive guys got hired.
Mike Zimmer was hired. He's done a good job, although
you know it's been up and down struggle with the
offense this year, running the football, offensive line play. And
I thought is maybe if he had an offensive guy
as your head coach, maybe your offense would be better.
(01:48:42):
Maybe they would have figured it out. I mean, there
have been plenty of plenty of defensive coaches and this
is just a pendulum swinging. We'll go from a gotta
hire the next Baltimore Raven defensive coach. How many of
them have got an opportunity? Pagano, Petton, of course, Rex, Ryan,
(01:49:07):
Marvin Lewis. These are all Baltimore raven three four defensive coaches,
two different levels of and some no uh levels of
a success. When here's another one. If we're talking about
teams that are still playing, right, Belichick obviously defensive guy,
(01:49:31):
been there forever. He turns the offense over to Josh
Mchannel's he and his Hall of Fame quarterback working out. Uh.
Anthony Lynn is a Rex Ryan guy, a Bill Parcel's guy,
former running backs coach, but he actually doesn't involve himself
a ton in the offensive and sometimes defensive game plans.
He's more CEO and leadership guy. But Sean Payton, former
(01:49:54):
offensive former quarterback, former offensive coordinator, play caller, all right, uh,
Doug Peterson, former quarterback, offensive play caller, Andy Reid, Obviously
he didn't play quarterback in the NFL, but he's a
play caller. Sean McVeigh, play caller, Who am I? Who
(01:50:19):
am I missing? Um? Frank Reich, former quarterback play caller
missing one other team? Right? They get them all? They
got him all, You got Patriots, Chargers, they got the Saints. Oh.
Jason Garrett, former quarterback play caller. Like everybody's pointing to
(01:50:42):
Sean McVeigh, Like Sean McVeigh is the reason. Like I
just named eight teams still playing in the playoffs, and
the only one with a new coach that's not an
offensive mastermind play caller is Anthony Lynn, who does have
an offensive background, comes from the part Cells and Rex
Ryan coaching tree. But oh yeah, by the way, he
(01:51:05):
didn't need The only thing that needed to be fixed
with the Chargers was they needed somebody who was a
culture changer, because they had talent and they had to
fix their offensive line, but they just they needed to
change the culture of being considered soft and finding ways
to lose games that they should win. And he's done it.
He's done a masterful job. But if six of the
(01:51:28):
eight teams remaining in the playoffs all have a play caller,
head coach, offensive coordinator guy, and many of them former
quarterbacks in their own right, right, like everybody except for
I don't think McVeigh played quarterback ever, could be wrong.
I know Andy Reid didn't. With the exception that punt
passing kick video that will not go away. But when
(01:51:49):
six of the eight that's that's a trend and it's
a positive trend, Well it's working. Why wouldn't you copy it.
Oh he played Maris Okay play to Merris. They play
quarterback a Merris something there. So they're all the same.
It's not just McVeigh, it's they're all the same. And
(01:52:12):
if you want to say Fangio like, that's fine, you
can say Fangio. But the Fangio thing went hand in
hand with the fact that Fangio is gonna run the
defense and Gary Kubiak form a quarterback head coach play
caller is going to run the offense. Yes, well, I
mean that isn't that what you do when you coach,
You have you do something very very well, and you
(01:52:34):
find another guy that you trust that does something very
very well that you don't do as well, and you
come together and it all goes better. Yes, but but
but but the trend is that what you split these
head coaches specialize in. They all spent almost all specialized
in offense, Belichick obviously being the exception being the exception.
(01:52:57):
But yes, you do what you do what you do well,
and you've got to be smart enough to know what
you know, what you don't know, and hire people that do.
So it sounds easy, It's yeah, that easy. We've had
We've had We've had a great show here, awesome show.

Bosa of the Chargers, ed Warder or Bruce Arians. Download

the Doug got Leap Show podcast we posted as soon
as the show is over. Are this um? How long
is Lebron James going to be on the sideline with
this pulled groin? Lakers won last two without him? With
Kyle Kusman back, when's LBJ coming back next? Be sure
to catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show
week days at noon eastern three pm Pacific. From a

heart of balloon landing on a car to a load

We know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers under written my Farmers

in the industry from a fifty years. It's rated number
one in the tax prep software category on trust Pilot.
(01:54:04):
That's two big reasons why you should be using it
to slay your taxes with tax Layer this year and
maximize your refund at tax layer dot com. This is
the Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Look, it's
weird that the NFL has finally come around this idea. Okay,
but this is an idea which is not new. Most
(01:54:25):
managers in baseball played what position? Ramos catcher. Most coaches
in basketball played what position? Music, I'm gonna go guard,
point guard, point guard. Most coaches former quarterbacks, quarterbacks. If
(01:54:49):
you're a point guard, if you're a catcher, if you're
a quarterback, you have won the leadership intangible. And two
you've seen entire plays developed. That's it. Those two things.
Those two things. So I I understand that I can't
(01:55:13):
believe that. Then you like take a breath, like, yeah,
actually it's a lot more believable, you think, and you
boy like, well, Luke Walton is not a point guard.
The truth is that Luke Walton actually was like a
point forward. But he's also an exception. He's also an exception.
Steve kerr Ron Lou Jason Kidd, Billy Donovan, like D'Antoni,
(01:55:41):
these they all have the same kind of thing in common.
So Phil Jackson was the exception exception, not the rule,
I meaning college basketball. Patino and Phil self, Mike Sachowski.
The exception is Roy Williams wasn't a player as a
manager manager, became a coach, longtime coach like he grew
(01:56:01):
up wanted to be a coach. Um. But that's fascinating
me on how just NFL people like I can't believe
you want another guy who was a quarterback and a
play caller to be a head coach when it's clearly
working with most of the teams. Let's get to the press,
(01:56:22):
the press, Dan byo what he got well, Doug will
continue on that string of NFL talk. Fox Sports Radio Zone.
Andy Furman, you hear him Sunday mornings right before my
show here on Fox Sports Radio six o'clock Eastern time.
He's on with Brian no. He is saying that the
(01:56:44):
Bengals are gonna hire Rams quarterbacks coach Zack Taylor to
be their next head coach. That from Andy Furman, our
teammates here at Fox Sports Radio. Of course, the Bengals
still have their vacancy. Eric b Enemy has been brought
up as a possibility as he interviewed for the job.
But yeah, Andy Ferman saying that it's going to be
Zach Taylor. The rams QB coach, and that's funny. Zach
(01:57:06):
Taylor what position he play in college and then professionally quarterback?
And uh, wasn't he an offensive coordinator in Cincinnati previously
an offensive coordinator in Miami previously? The answers, yes, anyway,
Like I I get that. We all think it's the
it's the McVeigh thing, and it is to a certain extent,
(01:57:27):
but um, you know, it's changing the guard in the
NFL where they're finally figuring out what else you got?
I got this, you touched on it earlier. But seela's
president or Rouney the second telling the Pittsburgh Postcausette that
all options are on the table for wide receiver Antonio
Brown except the release of the wide receiver. So I'm
wondering what other options other than don't keep him and
trade him there, I'm not sure, send him to Exile
(01:57:50):
Island after the immunity challenge, make him wear a Dunce
cab and MS in the corner. They don't do that anymore, people, No, No,
they don't. Some injury news in the NFL. You spoke
with Edward or about Todd Gurley. Gurley good to go,
not listed on the team's injury report for their match
up against the Cowboys. Cole Beasley, thoughways that ankle injury,
missed his third straight practice today. His status for that
(01:58:11):
game against the Rams up in the air. What you got, um?
Melvin Gordon, by the way, limited practice today for the Chargers.
How about this from college? Unlike Ladanian Thomason will go
this weekend? Wow? Throwing darts again? You did it last
week too, right? What does it during the game? During
the game, Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell has submitted his
(01:58:32):
name into the n c double A transfer portal, which
allows other schools to contact him. Martell could be looking
for a new school after quarterback Justin Fields transferred to
Ohio State last week. Now, Martel did say during Rose
Bowl week that he wasn't going to transfer even if Fields,
because at the time it was not known would come
to Columbus. But now at least he's put his name
in that transfer portal. Well, what, yeah, Tate Martell's from
(01:58:55):
the West Coast, He's from He's uh, he played at
Bishop Gorman. Um, I don't know. I actually think he
grew up in San Diego. He went to Bishop Gorman
just to go to high school, so he went to
like a football factory. Um, and he's you know, five
ft seven, you know, dynamic college caliber quarterback. Wouldn't be
surprised if a Big twelve school reached out to him.
(01:59:18):
But like, look, if they're gonna bring in Justin Fields,
is like a six two six three better throwing you know,
number one prospect in the country. I think this is
Tate Martell going like, all right, if you if, if, if,
if he's coming in, that must mean you promised him
he's gonna start. Lakers forward Lebron James has begun on
court activities after missing time with the n injured growing.
(01:59:38):
He'll be reevaluated on Wednesday, though, so that means he's
gonna miss schemes at Utah Sunday home against Cleveland and
then Tuesday on Doug's birthday against the Bulls. Yeah, I'm
actually have tickets to that game. How bummed out of mind,
Like he might be back the very next game, and
I got tickets to the game where he won't be playing.
They've got Oklahoma City on the seventeenth in okay See,
and then I believe they're the first game of the
(02:00:00):
Saturday night schedule on ABC as they were in Houston
to take on the Rockets. So maybe the NBA is saying,
I don't care what you do, just make sure he's
ready for Saturday of the nineteen. That could be the case.
Our good buddy and his Cantors in the news again
the Nick center nothing about London or or anything with
the Turkish government. But he did show his cheat day
(02:00:22):
meal on Twitter yesterday. Did you see this did not?
Included seven hamburgers, three of which had Friday eggs on
them and other toppings, and an order of fries. Today,
Cantor had to leave practice early because of an illness.
Ever have one of those you know? Maybe actually my
(02:00:42):
my son's uh, one of my son's best friends. His
birthday was Sunday, played a basketball game with him and
then all the kids had like cupcakes and candy afterwards,
and like we like, I'm I'm I monitor that stuff, like, look,
you don't want to feel bad. And he missed practiced
on Monday because he was sick from having too much candy.
I like to make my macaroni and cheese, so the
(02:01:02):
noodles kind of have a little almost crunch to them.
I don't like it when they're soggy and I made
some remember in junior high basketball made him too crunchy,
and then went to practice and it was not a
good site afterwards. It happens spirals only the Big threes.
Big Three is expanding. Yeah, do you guys hear about this? Yeah,
the league's gonna go from no, it's already got eight teams,
(02:01:24):
it's gonna go to twelve. They're also gonna play twice
a week and lower the age requirement from thirty to
seven to get some younger players. You get some young
fresh meat. Where are the new teams? Doesn't I guess
it doesn't. It doesn't matter that they don't represent cities
right correct. There's a team called the Triplets, which Lisa
Leslie is going to be the head coach of. And
then I'm sure a bunch of other teams with the
(02:01:47):
you know, three amigos. Maybe I'll probably be I'm gonna
put that out there. I want to coach the Big
three team. We're gonna shoot all threes. We're gonna play
and four were We're just gonna shoot four five on.
The police in Spain have arrested fifteen tennis players accused
of fixing matches with twenty eight players and all expected
(02:02:07):
to have some connection to the scandal. Police say that
one of the twenty eight players has participated in last
year's US Open, but it's not known if that player
was arrested by authorities. But a widespread scandal involving the
fixing of tennis matches in Spain, I just we have
to be really careful with the expansion of sports gambling, um,
(02:02:28):
you know, on keeping an eye on things. It's one
of the reason that Vegas monitoring things is so really,
so very important because they can monitor the changing of
amounts of money on certain certain obscure lines. By the way,
congratulations to people who follow me on Twitter as they
gave away Arizona State. That was free money. Thanks to
the people in the desert backing out there and pressed
that the press. That's the You are welcome America. You
(02:02:54):
are welcome America. I don't I don't believe I have
one tonight, but I may. I'll check it out and
I'll send you one. I'll send you one. So look,
I want to be clear here. Do I think it's
an awful look that the NFL has not hired a
minority head coach so far in the cycle. Yes, I
think there's also a pretty good chance that Chris Richard
(02:03:17):
becomes that first minority coach. Is it enough? Now? The
challenge is going to be to have Byron left which
is going to be the offensive the passing game coordinator
for the Buccaneers. More former quarterbacks. Is just not enough
former black quarterbacks that will get an opportunity to be
on staffs and then they become head coaches because so
oftentimes the African American assistants are on the defense side
(02:03:40):
of football, and when the trend goes offense, there's just
there's nobody in the pool to pick from. Mark Slayer
with the joinas tomorrow, John middle caf Fill joins tomorrow.
We'll get you ready for this weekend's game of a
great afternoon or evening. This is the dug out lip Show,
Fox Sports Tredio
