Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Spots Radio coming to you from
(00:27):
the tyrat dot com studios tyrit dot com. Well we
get there. On match selection, fast free shipping, free road
has a protection over ten thousand recommended sellers ty right
dot com. It's the way tire buying should be. Whole
Cruise here, Dan Byer with the US Open Golf sweatshirt
and hoodie kind of jealous. Jason Stewart, the curmudgeon himself,
(00:49):
and of course our resident Rams and Dodgers reporter John
Ramos on the ones and twos. He made it made
the football season and it may not be that big
for you, but for the rest of us who work
here in sports, Damn, it's been a while, right, Like
I I saw some of those morning talk shows this week,
(01:11):
go to like a Lebron topic, like what are we doing?
And we are we run completely out of anything to
talk about that we're onto Lebron. Uh, But the we're
gonna get a chance to see the defending Super Bowl
champion Chiefs take on the Lions. The Lions, and there's
(01:33):
a lot to this Lions team. When Dan Campbell got
the job, people made fun of him because he talked
about biting off dudes kneecaps. Right, that's did he talked
about biting off dudes kneecaps. But I told you that
in my very short period of time covering the NFL
(01:55):
as a sideline reporter. I was in Miami and Adam
Gase was the head coach at the time, and several
people I talked to you said, you know, of all
the coaches we've had here since Don Shula left, the
guy that people actually like the most, guys want to
play for the most, was Dan Campbell. They're like, man,
everybody loved that dude. But it should be pointed out
(02:20):
that they got off to a poor start last year.
It should be pointed out that traditionally Pat Mahomes gets
off to a hot start, and it should be pointing
out that there is a whole different animal when no
one has any expectations of you and you go and
win some games and keep the Packers out of the
playoffs last season, as opposed to going into the Lions
(02:44):
Den arguably or maybe inarguably the toughest place to play
in the league noise wise, talent wise, coaching wise, and
oh yeah, by the way, everybody in the league knows.
They don't call holding on the Chiefs when it's in
Kansas City. To be on a Thursday standalone game. That's
not the that's not the Thanksgiving Day game that they
(03:07):
have grandfathered in. This is a bit of a step
up in weight class, right. This is a game where
every guy on the team should and probably has, had
their neck cleaned up. You guys know what your neck
cleanup is, right, Like, if you're gonna if you're gonna Ramos,
if you go on a date with Suzanne, you gotta
(03:28):
have the neck cleaned up before you go on the date.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Would that be like tidying up your neck area with
like a shave and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Okay, yeah, yeah, you gotta see where a hairline is.
Even those of us who have the disappearing hairline there's
got to be some edging worked out in the background, right.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
That's how they know that you're special to them, right
like buyer. That's big with Lisa is make sure next
time you take Lisau on the date you're wearing cologne.
You showered, okay, and you clean up the neck. You know,
you don't want them to walk behind you, like, dude,
he don't even clean his neck.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
I know she has to clean my next fur me.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
It's okay, that's love right there. Yes, that's that is
that is love right there.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Otherwise they look like wild thing.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Rick Vaughan, it is an art and none of us
are artists, but we'll try and use it. I'll try
to use that manscaping thing on the neck. You're like, man,
I'm not sure that looks so good?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yes, trying to do it with a mirror. Two Like,
how do I move it?
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah? Well you can open the side. If you have
one of those little side medicine cabinet hears, you can
kind of do it. But even that, you're working like backwards.
Sometimes you use your left hand. You're not comfortable with it, Like,
I don't know if I'm ambidextrous that way, I mean
it's a real thing, like this is a big game
for the Lions that somebody picked them to be on TV.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
How do we get here?
Speaker 1 (04:44):
The Chiefs, this is kind of what they do, right Ah,
you know, we show up, We'll let you hang around
and then Pat Mahomes Mahomes magic. Now there was a
lot of questions about them, like will Travis Kelcey play tonight?
He thinks he's gonna play. Chris Jones is gonna watch
them a suite. The line's down to four and a
(05:04):
half from six earlier this week when it was six.
I told you to jump on the lines. Now we
get closer and closer to a field goal. I don't
want to pick against my Homes and the Chiefs, but
more than anything, footballs back. Football's back. Now. Have you
guys made the adjustment to the YouTube TV for the
red zone? I mean you don't have to because you
(05:27):
work on so correct.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
So I'm gonna be here for much of it.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yeah, I'm actually having to make the adjustment. I was
gonna make the adjustment anyway or see how it went.
And then all of a sudden, all the Disney channels
went away, and I'm like Okay, I can't watch college football,
so I made the switch. Jay stew the TV thing.
Have you added a TV? Do you have a new
TV going? Have you made the YouTube TV adjustment?
Speaker 5 (05:52):
So I think I was one of the first people
to cut the cord back in twenty nineteen. I've been
a YouTube TV subscriber since twenty nineteen. No adjustments have
been made. Uh now that they're gonna giving you the
Quadra Box Quadra Box, which is incredible yet again just
another example of how they're just leaving cable in there
(06:13):
the wake. But yeah, I'm ready, no need for a
new TV. I'm just fired up and ready to go.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Doug, Okay, Ramos, what's the what's the viewing? The viewing
like at home?
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Well, it's probably just gonna be the local channels two
at Fox and CBS and then Sunday Night and then mon.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
And you and you're like me because you would like
to watch the Dodgers, and I watched like the Lakers,
like we kind of were stuck with Spectrum TV, right
which Charter which all of a sudden, now you can't
watch You're not gonna be a watch MONEYNT football.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
I did the free trial of YouTube TV, But I
don't think they're gonna give you, like the first weekend
of the Sunday ticket for free. I think you still
have to order that, so I would probably get axed
out of that for this weekend.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
My issue with it is, and I've said this before,
is I have my I did the cable and internet together,
and I'm actually really happy with the Internet because it's
cable internet, right, So now it's gonna be the weird thing,
like I still have my Internet through Spectrum and yet
my I won't have the cable through Spectrum.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
I did the exact same thing. I have Spectrum Internet.
And when you make that call to drop the cable part,
be ready for like a fifteen layer departure process. They're
not going to let you. They're not going to let
you out easy.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Your plane doesn't leave on time at this departure right, kind.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Of like the La Times?
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Is there begging?
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (07:33):
Kind of like the La Times when they're like traveling,
what if we give you the paper for a dollar
a month?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
No, it's not the way. This is Doug otlib Show
here on Fox Sports Radio, and we're we're coming to
you from the Tiret dot Com studios This show is
brought to you by Progressive Insurance. Progressive makes sundeling easy
and affordable. Get a multipolicy discount, go by your motes
like rvbot, A TV and more. All your protection one
place punnelsay Progressive dot com. It's so funny, so funny,
like you the first of the newspaper thing. I wake
up every morning to a six months for one dollar
(08:03):
of an Orange County Register. Yes, every day in the
in the email comes to you one dollar, Like why
even collect any money? What is the what is the
actual point there? If you just gave it away for free,
but I had to subscribe and you got my email address,
wouldn't you be able to sell the ads just as easy?
Like what does one dollar actually do? Uh? That gets
(08:26):
you with the free trial thing, when all of a
sudden it links into the end. I've gotten this with
HBO Max and Skinemax right where all of a sudden like, well,
where's my bill increases? Like well, dude, you have the
Oh I forgot to turn that thing off, right I
put it, Doug. I put into my calendar the day
before it says disconnect from YouTube TV to day.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So not that I'm not knocking it. I think it's wonderful.
I just don't have the money to pay that amount
plus for the kids Disney Plus and then you know
all that stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
So it's a real thing. It's a real thing.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Right.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
You need somebody to parent your children and let this
plus do it instead of you. That's that's completely reasonable.
Stick him in front of a Disney movie. What could
go wrong? Right? I mean, there's no bad stories in
Disney movies, like Cinderella for example, where uh, the mom dies,
the dad gets married to an evil step mom, then
the dad dies, the evil step mom makes the original
(09:20):
daughter sleep with mice in some attic where no, and
then she does everything in her power to help her
daughters marry the princess instead it takes some magical slipper
to have that happen. But instead, no, let Disney raise
your kids, not you. I'm kidding Ramos, All right, So
we all got a TV set. I'm actually thinking about going,
like with this whole new YouTube TV thing, I'm thinking
(09:43):
about going to get a new TV too, just to
just to do it right. Screw it, let's do it,
let's let's get in. Let's let's because I've been doing
second screen on the iPad for a long time, and
that multi box thing a YouTube because remember we used
to have picture and picture in TA and then somehow
that went away for a while.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
It failed, utterly failed.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Why did it fail?
Speaker 5 (10:04):
I think technically people just weren't ready for it or something.
It's horrible quality on one and I.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Don't I know. I think it was that with with
cable and especially with wireless stuff, you couldn't do it.
You couldn't get the two different streams if you will,
crossing streams. But did they pull it off well with
the YouTube TV with the multip.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
You're going to find it so user friendly, Like I know,
there's a lot there's a lot of apprehension because you
just don't know. You've been a drug TV or a
or a cable person.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
I did. I DIDTV for a long time and then
I've been cable since I've been back only because I wanted, Uh,
how are you going to watch the Dodgers?
Speaker 5 (10:45):
I have my own ways? Okay, oh yeah, I have
a secret way.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
To watch share your ways of the force. Maybe off air.
Speaker 5 (10:50):
Probably can't okay. Lakers and the Lakers, I think they
said eighty percent of the Laker games are on national TV,
So I don't even know if you need spectrum for Lakers.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Unless Lebron gets hurt and then they all get canceled
or whatever.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Yeah, then you don't want watch them anyway.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
That's what takes place. Can I point out something that
is right in Dan Buyer's ally? First of all, I
love the Chief logo with the arrowhead to the Arrowhead stadium.
I like the Tomahawk chop. I don't think there's anybody
that truthfully thinks that's offensive, just like, oh it's Native America,
(11:26):
Like come on, dude, Like, let's just take a breath there.
But the Chiefs have the most average, random mail it
in uniforms in the league, right, Like the Lions have
tried some stuff here. They have the gray. I still
love the Honolulu Blue. I like the white. I do
(11:47):
feel like the Chiefs. As good as the Chiefs are now,
their uniforms have kind of remained the same and they're
kind of blah. They're kind of blah. What do you
think that?
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Well, then this travels down the road of what could
you do different? What could you do different? Could you
wear all gold a gold pants? That would be that
would be something you know Green Bay is you know,
gold pants, but we get use chargers. Chargers are chargers. Yeah,
they don't wear them all the time. They have gold pants. Yes,
(12:19):
I would. I would be afraid that we would go
down the road of a black alternate.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I don't like that.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
No, I don't like it either.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
They've done the all red I don't like the already either.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I think they could do like they could do a
white helmet and iced out white helmet if they wanted to.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Think that white uniforms.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, yeah, you could be the good guys like Texas.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
But am I wrong? Maybe you're right in terms of
what more could they do? But we can just like
look at the uniforms like they've been the best team
in football for five years and that's their uniform kind of.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
I like their red like when they go all red.
Actually I don't mind that at all.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
I I like the all white. I don't like the
red with the white pants or whatever. I just think
it's blah.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, I agree, Yeah, I think that's fair. I would
also say that the Lions have a blue helmet coming
out this year as their alternate that's going to actually
pair with their full gray set. That you mentioned, but
they'll have a blue helmet with their a throwback nineteen
eighties nineteen seventies eighties logo on it.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
These are all the hot important topics that we tackle
here in the Doug Gottlib Show, right, these are the
things they are important? Is with our TV setup food
set up right, I'm actually I don't know if you
guys have recognized, like I'm eating different and eating better,
so you guys know I'm a wing aholic. I love wings.
So I'm struggling with what to do tonight in terms
(13:45):
of the wings, Like, am I really going to eat
a piece of fish while watching, you know, in a
salad while watching this game? But I just a full disclosure.
On this show, we're getting ourselves ready for football, and
we talk a lot about the uniforms as much as
we do the teams. Real quick, favorite uniform and.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Football favorite helmet is the Bengals. It's amazing, Yes, which
to the traditional or the white? Actually the traditional okay,
just because of the creativity of it.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
It's great. Yes, YOUNI.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
You need that?
Speaker 3 (14:17):
The gosh Chargers, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
Say it's the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Yeah, it's the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
It's kind of inarguable what about you Ram or she
still Rams uniform guy?
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Of course, yes, yes.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
I mean look, look that's when the NFL, and that's
where I actually side with the Chiefs. This is it
sounds sounds like I'm contradicting myself. Like they basically have
the same uniforms they've always had, and there's something to
the traditional aspect of it, which is like the Rams
they have the same kind of thing they've always had.
Raiders have the same kind of thing they've always had.
It's just I don't know, it's something about maybe it's
(14:48):
the piping down the side. It just feels like they're like, yeah,
whatever doesn't really matter, we're going to sell them anyway.
The Cardinals, by the way, have the worst uniforms.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
I just they have new ones this year, but they
now they say Arizona across the front. They've kind of
they've done away with them. But it's very very minimalistic,
except with the word Arizona across their chest.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
Yeah, minimalistic works for Penn State, doesn't work for the
Arizona Cardinals. I just want to point that one out,
all right. Give us your thoughts at Gotlib Show, Twitter,
at Gallib Show, Instagram, and of course the Doug Goatlib
Show fan page, which I think somebody hacked on Facebook,
so maybe we got to get that fixed. I don't know.
I don't even know how to do it because I
don't have the code. Whatever.
Speaker 6 (15:29):
Fox Sports Radio had the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsportsradio dot
com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
It's so funny, Buyer, you were guest hosting my show
last week or maybe it was Monday. I don't even
was it this Monday? Was Labor Day? This Monday? Sorry,
I'm just you know, it's like when you start filling
in front of the people of shows and you're doing different,
like you don't know a day. So I think it was.
Was it Monday? Jay stew that we ere, uh yeah,
(16:05):
we're in for colling. Was that when we did the
jobs that were considered the best jobs, the best job
and they are all jobs that like EI, there's zero
chance I would ever do you have that? Do you
have to have that?
Speaker 5 (16:16):
Or we'll get that list. Carrie Rose was with us,
all right.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
We'll get carry Rose in a second, because Carrie has
had one of the great jobs ever played in the
NFL and now he's part of our Fox Sports radio family.
But by what I was getting to was, it's it's
one of those like our job is generally pretty awesome,
you know, like you go to it, speak to a
bunch of kids and you're like, hey, do any guys
like sports? And raise your hands? Ha, any guys like
(16:41):
to talk about sports radio? And we get paid to
talk about sports? All their hands go down. You're like,
I do. Kind of cool, right, It's fun for sure,
But the summer can be like, you know, and I
think we're all pretty authentic people here, so in being
in an effort to be authentic, like we just don't
just pull things out of our direct them which aren't
true or like just bizarre hot top hot hot take
(17:05):
dy sort of days. So the summer can be a lot.
We made we made it. Now we have like real football,
real discussions, real talk, pretty awesome. The five top jobs
dan By? Are you ready for him?
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (17:19):
This is per what magazine was it? Oh? US News
and Will Report, which is what we determine what a
good college is apparently by as well. Who knows who
these people are? Number five an information security analyst. Okay,
Number four is a PA a physician's assistant. It's like
a doctor. I think you can prescribe medicine, I think,
(17:42):
but obviously you don't have to go to medical school.
You get a PA degree. Medical and health services manager.
My buddy Jason does that. He's very happy with his job,
but I don't know if he's that happy. A nurse practitioner,
which is kind of like a physician's assistant, but anyway,
and a software developer, which software developer sounds really cool,
(18:04):
especially like ooh, do you want to design video games?
Then you're like yeah, but you're gonna be coding all
the time. Like I don't want to do that. I
gotta tell you, like, our jobs are looking cooler and
cooler and cooler. Would you rather be a software developer
or do what you do Dampire?
Speaker 3 (18:23):
I'd rather do this, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Okay, what if you had what if the summer months
lasted like eight months? Would you still have that same opinion?
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Yeah? Yeah? I think so?
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Okay, Ramos, what about you medical and health services manager
or be the Wizards of be the Wizard and you're
actually the manager for all the board ops here at
Fox Sports Radio. Would you switch out?
Speaker 2 (18:51):
I would not know.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
I know, we got one of those cool jobs. All right,
let's get to carry roadse he joins us. Now, of course,
former NFL safety played eight years in the National Football
League and he's an analyst on Fox Sports Tradier. You
can hear him on Fox Sports Radio, contributing on this
show and of course on the weekends. Kerry, if I
were to tell you the Detroit Lions we're gonna play
in the kickoff to the NFL seas, if I would
(19:15):
tell you this a year ago today, what would you
have said.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
I would say, I should probably take one of my
other jobs, and that probably be more real and more
accurate than this happening right now, So I would not
believe it.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Okay. So with that, and again this is more outsider
looking in. It does feel like these games are different.
The energy is different, the hypees a little different. I
know it's still football, and I know they finished off
like their last win the season was essentially a playoff
game because it eliminated the Packers from the playoffs, But
am I wrong to think like this one's gonna be
(19:51):
played a little higher level and no matter how well
they played last year, that was house money. This is
a little different because there's expectations with the Lions.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
Oh definitely ahigher level. This is the time when you
know the blood's really pumping. The guys are really excited
to go out there and make a name for themselves.
Each year its own empathy obviously, which we all know.
And you really can't stand on what you did last year.
I mean internally you can because they can. You have
something to look at. It makes it tangible. But this
year is a whole different year, and so they're going
(20:19):
to have to come out and actually play well and
execute and do the things they've been talking about all
all season. So it's exciting. It's nerve wrecking, and it
does it. It's never not nerve wrecking the first game
of the season. So definitely exciting times.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
As a safety, there are times when you matched up
with tight ends. Let's say Travis Kelce plays, but he's
not the same. How does that change how you play
against the Kant City Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Well with with Kelsey, if he's healthier or not, you
have to change if you look so right, I mean,
so I think that's the number one thing. A guy
that's maybe second guessing a little bit thinking about injury,
not one hundre percent. You want to change your looks
up on him. You want to get physical with him.
And that doesn't mean just as the primary defender. That
means if you're a d N or a line back
(21:09):
in the three fourth system, you want to get your
hands on them, tip them, throw them off. Time will
be off a little bit anyway. But the more you
can get him out of his regular routine on the field,
that's the only way you're going to be affected against him.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Do you sweep the leg?
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Somebody will be sweeping the leg trust and it won't
be where we would probably be able to see it.
But anytime he's around around around the pile, he's going
to get hit a little extra more. You're gonna hold
him down while you're tackling him, you're gonna twist it
a little bit. You're gonna do all the things you
can to gain an advantage. So I don't think there
have been apparent sweep but there will be some of
(21:48):
that going on.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Okay, help me out what makes him when healthy? What what?
How is he able to get open right? And it
just it does feel like, dude, they they've had since
losing Tyreek Hill well, they got a bunch of kind
of random guys. I mean, Pauldo, Scantling had a good
year last year or whatever. And it's not like they're terrible,
but they're not big name guys. But the one guy
(22:10):
they always go to is Kelsey and he seems to
almost always deliver. What what makes them so special, Well,
that's not the athlete.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
Think it's not being an athlete, because he's an athlete, yes,
But so with the other guys, it's just understanding the scheme.
So the smarter you are offensively or defensive, but you
know where your weaknesses are on any given play, right,
So that's that's where you get the upper hand. If
you know the weakness and you know that they're gonna
blitz in this particular spot, I'm going to go to
(22:40):
that spot and I'm going to be open. It's very
it's a very simple, simple understanding of what you're doing
and what the other what the opposition is doing as well.
And I think that's why he's him and Patrick Mahomes
has such a good report because he knows Travis knows
where the spot is to be open. And Tabas also
runs his route for a time and really, really really well,
(23:01):
and he stamps the shakes, he gives you, you know,
stuff at the top of the break that gets them open.
And he's also just a big guy. And so if
you put a covered guy on him, usually they're smaller.
If you put a guy that maxis and body size,
he's probably more athletics. So that's that's where it gets tough.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Okay, what about Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
You know.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
That offense what I've been told the offense and again
you played against its Actually no is it's it's actually
kind of simple, right there's they're not them, but they
just hit you with formations, with movement and whatever. And
then is that zeph air that it's not actually a
super complex offense. It's more the complexity in the in
the variance of looks which changes your assignments defensively.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Yeah, it's the it's the options, right. So a lot
of times, even a lot of the routes that Kelsey
are running, like I said, it's based off coverage, so
he has a couple of options in those routes. At
the end of the day, it boiled down to if
Kansas City has time, or any good quarterback and good
receiver has time, it's going to be hard to stop him,
(24:06):
so especially if they know what they're doing. So I
think that's that's the that's the golden ticket for Kendy City.
If they have time and Travis has a two way
go to run a rout, it's gonna be hard to
stop him. And I think that's that's what it. You know,
that's really what it blows.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
Down to Terry Road. Joni Us here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show, we're hours away from the kickoff of the
upcoming NFL season. What do you think about Nick Bosas
signing the biggest contract by by a pretty substantial margin
in the history of the league for a defensive player
Number one?
Speaker 4 (24:38):
He deserves it, great player. The only thing that the
only thing that comes out of this for me is
I came along a little bit too early, because if
I was, if I was still around, you know, these
contracts look really, really good right now at the time,
I had the biggest guaranteed contract for safety in the
history and in my time right when I was playing.
(24:59):
So you know, you have those moments of, yeah, if
you would have waited a little bit.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Longer, but what what is But help me out, what's
that feeling like like like, you know, you get to
the league. That's one contract, that's one feeling. Just sign
a deal that's the biggest in the history of your
position in a sports. It's been around one hundred years.
What what do you remember about that feeling?
Speaker 4 (25:21):
It was? I mean it was crazy. I mean, you
think about all the hard work you put in one.
You think about where you came from. Where in my situation,
you know, lower middle lower lower, lower middle class, and
you know three you know, two brothers on top of that,
so a lot of things were were scared to receive
and to get and so you get to a position
of being able to get what you want and and
(25:42):
you know, like take care of your family and do
these things. I mean, the feelings indescribable. I remember the
first signing bonus check that I received, and I remember
keeping that actually check how big?
Speaker 1 (25:53):
How come on, you can brag how.
Speaker 4 (25:54):
Big the signing bonus? Just ten mill? Okay?
Speaker 1 (25:57):
And that was so you have a you had a
check for ten mil, like an actual check for tim ears.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
An actual physical check. And I remember sawing my mom
like what is this? Like I was like, I get
paid to do this at this level and it was
just it was crazy.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
That's awesome. That's awesome. Man's that's so cool. Okay, Like
just just so you know, I'm a Charger fan, but
you talk to enough people. They've drafted really well. Again,
you got to stay healthy. But I mean, Rashaun Slater's
a stud at left tackle. Herbert, it doesn't have to
(26:33):
be Mahomes to beat Mahomes. I feel like, you know, Eckler,
this is probably the last year of Eckler there. But
they got Eckler. You know, you got Keenan, Mike Williams.
They drafted well defensively. You know, they think Derwin James
is the best safety in football. I don't know what
you think you think of that. I mean, he's a
dynamic player. They got Joey Boast, they got players all around.
(26:56):
But they have that cloud that hangs over them that
there's always something that goes wrong. How hard do you
think that's going to be for them to overcome?
Speaker 4 (27:04):
It's gonna be hard. But I also think everything you
said is one hundred percent accurate. And they and there
were those things that if you bet on them winning
the Super Bowl every year, you know, not every year,
but you know in there in the height of their success,
and even right now it can be a good fit,
but something seems to always happen to whether it's injury
(27:25):
or I think in this instance for them, hopefully they
stay healthy. All these things happen in their favor. I
still just don't believe in their coach being able to
coach in real moments because he's so by the analytics
books that I mean, football isn't played that way. And
I know, even to talk about other sports, even basketball,
(27:47):
right it's not. It looks good on paper and you
could show these things, but at the end of the day,
the tougher team, the smarter team, the team that stays
healthy is gonna win. And so and also just being
able to have a head guy that can paul again
based off what's happening in the game and not off
some play card that says you should do this if
the probability is good. That's just it doesn't work that way.
(28:09):
So I'm worried about them just for that reason.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Gotta have gotta have feel. Are you betting for or
against Russell Wilson bouncing back this season?
Speaker 4 (28:19):
I'm betting again. I think Russell. I think Russell Wilson
has had a lot of you know, a lot of
success in this league, and obviously, as you can see
at the moment, you know, based off last year with
more based around that whole team and what they did
of the team, not just him. He made a lot
of big plays when they needed him, but uh, it's
(28:39):
just he's not going to be the guy that's going
to get you over the hump right now, and so
it's going to be based off what they do as
a team and what they got the team. Good defense,
they got some play makers on offense, but I just
don't think they have.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Enough carry you the best man. Can't wait hear you
in the weekends. Appreciate you contributing, give us incredible insight
and real analysis. We'll talk with you soon. Thanks for
being guests on Fox Sports Radio. That's when my guy
Carrie Rhoades joining us to play eight years National Football League.
Can you imagine, like I remember, this is a real thing.
The first time I when I like it was it
(29:12):
was probably a year into when I worked at ESPN
that I started getting direct deposit And it was because
I used to love to actually get the physical check
and just stare at it. It wasn't nearly like it
wasn't It's a good I mean for my aid, I
was like twenty six at the time. It was good,
really good money. But I just remember like staring at
(29:32):
it at times, like, this is my money, This is
so cool. Can you imagine if a ten million dollar
check and then what would have you like? Oh, shoot,
I signed it. Where's that? There's that check? Oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
It kind of reminds me of the old Ricky Henderson story.
There's a lot of great ones, but one of them
is that his agent went over to Ricky's house and
there was a bonus check that he had been given
and Ricky put it up, he framed it and put
it on the wall, and the agent's like, that doesn't
come into our account yet, did you cash that, Chuck?
(30:11):
And Ricky hadn't catched it yet, he framed it, had
not cashed it.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
Ricky Henderson is a little bit like that Tyson Zone, Right,
there's no story you wouldn't believe to be true.
Speaker 6 (30:20):

Hope you're great better than great? Football seasons?
Speaker 5 (30:39):
Here?
Speaker 3 (30:40):
What what?
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Which means? Fantasy football seasons?
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Here?
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Which I got? I got an important note for you.
Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast live every single day from the
tire rack dot Com studios. Tyrack dot com. Let me
get there on match slection pass free shipping. Fred has
a protection for ten thousand recommended stallars tiret dot com.
It's the way tire buying should be. Okay, we got
(31:08):
a couple of things here. Where to click this? Make
sure that we put this on social media. Okay, football
season is here. Okay, but it's a very important This
is the most important thing you need to know. Okay.
There are three things that the rest of the world
does not care actually about you ready for them? Okay,
we don't care. Okay about your family vacations. Right Remember
(31:34):
your own family doesn't care about your family vacations. Remember
all those videos and pictures you took of family vacations
or your kid Have you as anybody ever watched those videos? No,
right now, try and show it to somebody else. Nobody
actually cares. Like, let me just tell you about that.
I saw this incredible cave when I was in Egypt
and I learned about Like, dude, I didn't I wasn't there.
(31:56):
You can't describe it to me, show me a picture.
It's just gonna create some sort of fomo that doesn't
have the desired effect. I get it, you loved it,
you appreciate it. If you want to give me some
pointers off, I'm going to Egypt.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Good.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
Don't care about your family vacations or your personal vacations.
I like hearing about John's eleven U All Star exploits,
and I'm sure at some point Dan Sun is going
to have a golf club and be winning junior golf tournaments.
But for the most part, we don't actually care about
(32:26):
your kids academic or athletic achievements. But you know what
we care least about is your fantasy football team. So
if you ask me, like, won't stay calls about fantasy
football because nobody cares, you'll be able to infer who
you should play or who you shouldn't play. And by
the way, if you love fantasy football, and I actually
(32:48):
love fantasy football, I'm so good at it. I was
in my buddies league and I got kicked out of
the league. There's a real story. My boy's name is
Joe Prato Gay. He works for the Department of Homeland Security.
He invited me to their league. Heay. I was in
the league for one year. I won the league and
I donated the winnings towards a party for everybody. And
(33:11):
then the next year they're like, you're not engaged enough.
I was like, dude, that's because I wanted off of
the group chat. I don't care enough about your trash talking.
I just came here to win the league. If you
want that, go to Dan. But Dan Buyer's got a
great podcast. It's called I Want Your Flex Downloaded. You
got all the stuff you need. But the truth is,
don't share with other people about the decision you have
(33:34):
about your flex position because they don't care.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
You know, I.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
Almost, I mean guys, I almost trade away Ramande Stevenson
and then all of a sudden, Ramonde Stephenson three touchdowns
a day up top. They're like, dude, I really don't care.
We all good to We all agree, Hey, family vacations, kids,
accomplishments that are not your kids, okay, and your fantasy
football team. Please don't share. Keep that one to yourself.
(34:04):
Inner monologue, good, outer monologue? Not good. Okay, do you
guys believe in karma in any level?
Speaker 4 (34:15):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (34:16):
You do?
Speaker 4 (34:17):
I do?
Speaker 2 (34:17):
Oh, definitely.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
Is that why you're just so nice to everybody because
you think karma ultimately come around and help you out. Yes, okay,
that's cool. John is really that kind of a human being?
What about you, Ja Su? There's no way you believe
in karma?
Speaker 5 (34:29):
No, I definitely do.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
Yeah, but you're cynical about everyone and everything.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
Yeah, No, No, I'm definitely cynical. But I believe in karma.
Treating people the right way, treating doing the right things
will pay off it. Doing the wrong things will eventually
catch up being.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Okay, that's fair. That's fair if that's your definition of karma.
What about you there, Dan Byr.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Yes, the golf gods at some point, yes, they will
shine on you. I'm still waiting.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
But well, there's a little piece of karma tonight. I
don't think Travis Kelsey's a bad dude. Matter of fact,
I know Travis a little bit, and he's a spectacularly
good dude. He and Jason everybody know who knows him
like they're good dudes. But there is a little bit
of karma from this standpoint, Do you remember when they
(35:16):
won the Super Bowl? Do you remember when Travis Kelcey
kept going nobody thought we could be here? Do you
guys remember that, like you had you you're gonna be
a Hall of Famer. You have a guy who would
go in the Hall of Fame already as a quarterback,
may go down as the greatest quarterback ever. You have
(35:37):
one of the greatest coaches ever. Right, You're you've been
to another Super Bowl, You've been to AFC championship games, Like,
does that mean everybody picked you to win the game?
Speaker 4 (35:46):
No?
Speaker 1 (35:47):
But the no one thought we would be here. It
was it was kind of embarrassing. It wasn't offensive. It
was just super eye roll. So look, he didn't suffer
major knee dam I mean, she's gonna be okay. He
tweaked his knee a little bit. He may or may
not play, but if it keeps him at least one
day away from the mic after the game, going to fight. Okay,
(36:13):
Beastie boys, don't like that song. It's not that cool.
And everybody thought you had a chance to the Super
Bowl because you got you and Pat Mahomes. Please don't
be that guy. I'm just done with that act a
little bit of sports karma? Is that? Is it too
much to say karma because he's okay, Like, I don't
want injury to fall him. It's not really It's like
a tweak of a knee. Nobody thinks it's a major injury.
(36:34):
Is that too much? Buyer? You usually are my good guard.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I would say I would not wish injury on anyone.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
I don't want you injury on him. I just don't
want a postgame interview with him.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
I would say, I think it's a little even a
little too far.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Okay, yeah, okay, then maybe I'll dial it back somewhere
short of karma, and just I just don't want the
post game. Nobody thought we'd have a chance. I mean,
like take tonight. He's the kind of guy they win
the game. Everybody's hating on us, Like, dude, you were
six point favorites, then four and a half point favorites
because you got hurt by definition people, the important people
thought you were going to win by four and a
(37:11):
half points. I just, I guess part of me is
just lashing out at the nobody thought we would be
here thing. When you've been a favorite ever since you
had My homes?
Speaker 5 (37:23):
Isn't it also an exercise in why you shouldn't use
extreme language, like I always thought this about the former
celebrated president, when everybody says something or nobody says something,
if everything is is despicable, yes, then everything is despicable
and nothing's despicable. My point is this, don't say no
(37:45):
one said we'd be here, but the context was we
forget how high people were on the Broncos entering the season.
The Broncos were supposed to beat them out, and then
they had this thing where the Bills were supposed to
finally get over the hump against them too.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
Well, the Bills but didn't play them in the postseason.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
No, I'm just saying that if he's saying nobody picked us,
I think he's talking about the people from the beginning
of the season that kept doubting them, and I think
those were the two aspects the Broncos predictions, and then
people thought the Bills were going to get over the hump.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Okay, I'm just I don't love that act.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
But I agree with you should never say nobody or
everybody because that takes away from your argument.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
I mean when you say nobody, that's like me saying
your fantasy football team nobody cares. When I say nobody,
nobody cares. Nobody really cares about your fantasy football team. Literally,
there is not another person. Even your wife is like,
I don't care. I don't know what your deals with
this thing. Speaking of over the top statements, did you
(38:47):
guys see this like lost in the Caleb Williams and
his dad Carl saying, Hey, Caleb could come back to
school if we didn't. You know, if he doesn't get
the right team, doesn't get the number one pick, was this,
Cayleb Williams says, uh, and then the first pick in
(39:11):
the draft. These are like what he's aiming for. And
then the other one is eight super Bowls. He was
asked why eight? Tom Brady has seven, so you gotta
set the bar high. So the part of me goes, uh,
what's the expression If people aren't laughing at your dreams,
your dreams aren't big enough. Right. It's a great line,
(39:35):
by the way, you can share that I didn't invent that.
I saw that somewhere on a meme or whatever, And
I just love the line. If people aren't laughing at
your dreams, You're not your dreams aren't big enough. It's
pretty good, right.
Speaker 4 (39:46):
But.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
Yeah, and this just the whole thing comes across as
talking out your rectum. It comes across. Do you remember,
I know Bayer remembers this. Do you remember when and
he's I liked Joe Tests. Do you remember when Joe
Tests got the Monday Night football gig and he did
a sit down interview and it was like he was
talking about his method and how he does play by play,
(40:11):
and everybody in the industry is like, what happened to
Joe Tests? He is feeling himself. You remember what I'm
talking about?
Speaker 3 (40:20):
I don't, but I think that actually makes it better.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Okay, google it.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
You'll be like, because I've been a fan of his,
I love you like I've worked with Joe Tests.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
I actually like Joe Tests. But then there's points in
which you're like, dude, relax, you know, get guy, get
over yourself a little bit. So it does happen, like
I think we've all anytime you're successful firston, and there's
a point where you're like whoa. And that's where you
gotta have friends that go like, dude, say that out
loud to yourself like, ooh, yeah, that don't want to
(40:54):
be that guy. Don't want to be that guy. But
regardless of which that's like Kayleb Williams, I mean, do
I think he'll be the number one pick in the draft.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (41:04):
Do we have the possibility that Drake Bay could be
the number one pick? We do. It's not cemented, it's
not done, you know. And we're also acting like he's
accomplished everything he needs to accomplish in college football. Uh well,
I don't hate to be that guy, but I'll be
(41:25):
that guy. Dude, you haven't won anything that matters. Didn't
win the Pac twelve last year at USC, hadn't won
a college football playoff game, and of course haven't won
a national championship. Like, yeah, you won the High schol Trophy,
I best quarterback in college football. I have friends on
that staff who love the kid and think he's immensely
(41:47):
talented and likely to be the number one all pick.
But like, dude, you're acting like it's a done deal.
I'm the number one pick, and if I don't get
my way, I'm going to go and come back to
school and then it's going to work out. And this
right team is going to present itself and I'm just
get then I'm gonna win seven or like relax, get
over yourself just a little bit so in and of itself, saying, hey,
(42:14):
the goal is eight rings, not a big deal, right
if you're gonna you know, if you're not, if people
aren't laughing, your dreams and your dreams aren't big enough.
But when then you couple it with the hey, I
want to be the first pick. Oh, by the way,
I could still come back to school and eight rings,
you just get the overall sense of my man is
(42:35):
feeling himself and somebody. And this is where Carl the
dad needs to come in and go my man like
you can think it, but articulating it and saying it
doesn't land the way you wanted to land. Is that fair?
Speaker 5 (42:56):
Yeah? This reminds me of you know, my whole stance
on a literation. Right, alliteration is like lazy, uncreative thing
to do, but it really hits makes a mark. Remember
Tank for Tua was a thing I think in the
fall of twenty eighteen or whatever that was, and we
all know how that ended up. Tank for Tua, Right, Yeah,
(43:17):
I'm coming up with my own alliteration here and I'm
hoping to catches on.
Speaker 1 (43:20):
Okay, where did this be?
Speaker 5 (43:22):
Caving in for Caleb? I think the Cardinals are caving
in for Caleb.
Speaker 1 (43:26):
About Caven for Caleb?
Speaker 5 (43:28):
Caving for Caleb?
Speaker 1 (43:29):
Yeah, I think caving in is is a little bit redundant,
caving for Caleb, caving fashtag? Does that work down? What
do you think?
Speaker 4 (43:36):
Dan?
Speaker 3 (43:36):
I like www Dot won't win for Williams. There's some
alliteration won't win for Williams. Right, that is good?
Speaker 1 (43:45):
The late Barbara Walters. Barbara Walters is right, she did die.
She the best way right late. She would struggle with
that one. She would struggle with that one. Won't will
what will we? Sorry? I can't do I can't without
Oh like.
Speaker 5 (44:07):
Uh Dan's game time that he created last last hour,
it could have been like who are the teams most
likely caven for Caleb? You know it would have been
the exact same or second that Doug and John still
would have had the argument they had about their cults
from November.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Collapsing for Caleb. I like Caven for Caleb. I don't
do you think you're okay with that? With eliminating the end?
Can now? Is there there a G or.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
No G.
Speaker 5 (44:35):
Even for Caleb sounds more edgy like it sounds. Yeah,
that's probably more you could do.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
The Caleb collapse. You could reverse it Caleb collapse, but a.
Speaker 5 (44:44):
Lapsing for Caleb no, mmmm
Speaker 1 (44:49):
Mmm, all right, we get we have a whole year
to work on it.
