(00:21):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. We're coming to you
from the tyrat dot Com studios. Tyrat dot com let
me get there on match selection. No, No, you're true
time fast, free shipping, free road has a protection over
ten thousand recommended style of tyrat dot com s way
tire buying should be mm hmmmmm mmmm. So I want
(00:49):
to ask myself self, what shall we talk about today? Right,
and we'll get to Pacers Celtics, which gets underway tonight.
That game is going to start at what eight o'clock
eastern five o'clock Pacific time. But before we get to that,
(01:10):
I want to talk about some of the coverage stuff
with the New York Knicks, because people seem to want
to discuss that. You know, it seems to be kind
of a point of what a point of contention really
is that ESPN they had the Stephen A. Smith thing
where he's walking in and he does a pregame speech,
(01:32):
which of course is I mean, it's fairly laughable, right. One.
He never coached in the NBA, never played in the NBA.
The only associates in the NBA is covering the NBA,
and so that part is super weird. In addition to
which he is one of these what anyone would call
completely fake fans, because if the Knicks lose, especially when
(01:57):
they have lost, he wants nothing to do with them.
And when they suddenly win, now he's mister nick like.
That doesn't really work that way. But we should also
point out that Lou Holtz did this for Notre Dame. Now,
of course LOUI holds.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
The head to the kid coach Notre Dame when they
win next championship. You know, he's always claimed Notre Dame.
It's kind of like his school. Don't forget, Lou Hawt
was the coach of Arkansas and Minnesota, and of course
they lose South Carolina and that one ended with a
big brawl, and then he's coaching you get for a
short period of time, not too that many people know that,
but Lou Holtz used to go and give a big
game speech to Notre Dame getting ready for the big games.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
And the and the point about it is kind of
the same. We'll get to the second. Here's Dan Patrick
talking about ESPN.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Now we turn our attention to ESPN's New York Knicks,
who lost in Game seven to the Pacers. Pacers did
play in the game. I just want to let ESPN know, Uh,
if you want to buy into East Coast by you
have every reason to buy into ESPN's East Coast bias
watching that game. How about some impartiality here?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
I was embarrassed for ESPN because it felt like it
was all about the Knicks. Even at halftime, it was
about the Knicks. The Pacers aren't exciting. I get it,
you know, not big names, not a sexy team. But
you still have to cover the game. You got to
be fair. I don't need a stephen A Smith a
rival video. I don't need a pep talk with him
(03:30):
and Spike Lee. He doesn't work for the Knicks, you
work for ESPN. I was really surprised and I didn't
care who won. But after that I was rooting for
the Pacers. I thought, you know what, let's make this
uncomfortable for you.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
I actually like that, and I actually think that's part
of it. Like, look, we can sit here and deny
that New York is the number one market in the country.
We can sit here and deny the fact that when
they're on TV it feels different than when their teams
are on TV. What we can't deny as the numbers,
and then numbers will tell you more people care, more
people pay attention. It's the same as the Cat Dallas Cowboys,
(04:08):
it's the same as Notre Dame. And granted, Notre Dame
and the Cowboys have been more successful more recently than
the New York Knicks have. I'm not in denial of that.
But what is important. What's important to know is that
all of this plays into the widest set of the audience. Right.
(04:32):
That's the biggest thing that people need to understand about
our business. If you're playing to a narrower audience because
it feels right to you or you think it's the
right thing to do, you're not actually doing your job. Now,
do they go overboard with the Steven A Smith's thing? Sure, sure,
but making him unlikable does not hurt what they're trying
(04:54):
to do. If more people tune in just because they
want to cheer against the Knicks and against steven A.
Smith's pick, great, Great, They're in the business of getting
people to watch their channel. Now. Look, of course this
(05:15):
contradicts I know what Jason's thinking right now. He's thinking, well,
didn't Steven A. Smith go on Dan LeBatard Show and
say I'm a journalist. No, you're not. You're not a journalist.
I would say, you're an entertainer. Right, And if you
don't like entertainers, just understand Monday Night Football has had
entertainers in the broadcast booth for years. I mean, honestly,
(05:39):
that's the manning cast. They talk from real football, but
they also do entertainment. So there's no one way in
which you have to do it. But denying the fact
that playing up the New York Angle is a good thing,
this is not an you know, people want to go
a ESPN's dying. ESPN's not dying. They're not going anywhere. Okay.
(06:04):
Cable in fact, isn't dying either. Cable is slowing down
and whatever. But people are starting to understand, like, hey,
you know, the cable bundle thing was kind of a
good deal back before we had streaming, and eventually we'll
move to all streaming, right, but we're not close to
being there just yet. But if you're ESPN and you're
(06:27):
trying to create a way to get people to watch,
we don't all have to watch because it's Saturday morning,
Sunday Morning TV doing the loveywi happy giggling, no real
content shows. That doesn't always work, you know, TNT shows
(06:50):
they can't compete with because they don't have Barkley, they
don't have Ernie, they don't love Shog, they don't have Kenny.
So they're trying stuff. They're trying to get your attention
and oh yeah, by the way, talking about it only
helps catch your attention. Here's Colin opening his show this way.
(07:10):
The only people more disappointed then Nick fans that they
lost in Game seven at home to Indiana was ESPN. Apparently, Yeah,
because they do a number. They do a number, they
do a massive number. Okay, Nick's Syracuse right, you can
(07:35):
and don't get me wrong. A lot of these people
are self important people. A lot of these people can
rub you the wrong way because of the way in
which they cheer for their fan and cheer for their
team whatever. That's okay. The numbers would tell you that
more people watch. Now. ESPN has trouble, and I think
lots of play step trouble, but ESPN especially has trouble
deciphering how to understand those numbers and how to still
(08:00):
do their job while playing at least partially to that
vibrant audience. I had told the story on Dan Patrick
Show a long time ago that my last year at
ESPN was during Tebow time and it was hard at
times because t BO time, Hey, Tebow time was people
(08:24):
trying to jam Tim Tebow stories in that didn't really fit.
They just didn't and they went overboard. And the next
thing you probably went overboard. But you know what, you
get as much juice out of the orange as possible.
Because the Knicks were too to beat up to win.
They're gone and so their number is gone as well.
I'm not sitting here defending doing an All Knicks broadcast. Actually,
(08:47):
usually when you do a broadcast, you do one more
for the visiting fans than the home fans, because the
home fans are the real ones are at the game.
But in this particular instance, when you're playing to the
widest set of the audience. I don't think it's crazy.
I don't think it's crazy to do a Cowboys game
and play more of a Cowboys angle. Doesn't always have
(09:07):
to be positive. Notre Dame game. Same thing. More people
watching the Knicks aer on TV. More people care when
they win or when they lose. Same thing with the Cowboys,
same thing with Notre Dame. And whether or not they've
won or haven't won recently and they haven't is irrelevant.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
This is the best of the Done dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
What would you not got limp shit Fox Sports RADI
do do doot doot. We're broadcasting live with the tyrad
dot com studios. Tyrad dot com. Well we get there
on match selection, past, free shipping, free road hazard protection,
(09:53):
tyrad dot COM's the way tire buying should be gotta
go down. Thank for you, really really do. I want
to talk about JJ Reddick as head coach, and obviously
I think I'm keenly aware of some of the similarities there,
but there are some differences, some of things that make
(10:15):
it easier for him to be in than some of
the things that are being harder for in comparison to
what I'm trying to do. But it's definitely an interesting
parallel to say the least. And then you know what's
really fascinating here we have I know, Sam is, Jason
(10:36):
definitely is, and Dan Byers as well. We are, like,
it's kind of crazy how far into baseball season we
already are. We're what forty six games or so forty
nine games between forty six and forty nine games into
the baseball season, one hundred and sixty two, So you're
right there at the quarter pole, right, And the Yankees
(11:02):
are good, the Phillies are good, the Dodgers are good, right,
the Brewers are good, the Guardians are good, the Orioles
are good, the Mariners are maybe a little bit surprising.
And other than that, like, can you really tell me
anything that's interesting in a sport which I think has
(11:25):
been made far more interesting to watch because we just
picked up the pace and because of you know, not
having the shift or the true shift anymore, more balls
put into play, more speed. It's just it's a better
watch with more scoring. I can't really think of one
thing that I would say is worthy of a national
(11:47):
sports radio discussion.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Well, what you just pointed out stolen bases are way
down and pace of play is up. So that thing
that we saw last year that we love so much
is spike maybe aberration. Yeah, it's kind of come back
to the mean a little bit. And those pitcher injuries
early in the season, and the Union making a big
(12:10):
deal out of the pitchclock being a reason for the
pitcher injuries, which the league has said there's no evidence
that proves that. And you're right, the storylines started with
showhy and then it became show hey, maybe a gambler,
and now it's just show how taany doing kind of
(12:31):
well on a team that was expected to win. But
there aren't a whole lot of storylines in baseball. But
I think Buyer has a different opinion.
Speaker 6 (12:38):
Well, yeah, I just I think that there there are
two really big stories that I would say, and it's
one actually that Jason and I talked about after the
show a little bit yesterday about the Houston Astros. Now
they're playing better baseball, but now is this was this
the bottom falling out? There are six games under five
hundred right now. You mentioned the Mariners, Rangers obviously coming
(12:59):
off their Worldes win, but you know, do does Houston
come back or is this who Houston is now? Have
they fallen off and now will no longer be the
great team that we think they are? And then the
other thing is it is the Yankees, Judge, Stanton and
Soto playing as well as they have, and the home
(13:24):
run numbers that they have I think are something of
Now you want to talk about Bronx bombers. I think
that's something that could pick up steam throughout throughout the season.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
But we know, we know if you've followed along. And
I think I saw a tweet just the other day
Stanton and Judge they're gonna be the first tandem to
hit fifty home runs in the season. And it's like, no, no,
Stanton's gonna get hurt here and it's gonna be sooner
than later, and Judge is gonna get hurt. Like, I
don't think the Yankees thing is sustainable. I think they're
(13:53):
a nice story in the middle of May. But check
back with me in four weeks.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Okay. My point is that, and look inside baseball. I
think those are good stories. I don't know if they
it's just interesting, like even show hey performing well lean
the league in batting everage I don't know how much
that matters anymore, but it does matter when you're number
one and you hat thirteen home runs already. But he
doesn't really have a dynamic personality, and there's still the Dodgers.
(14:26):
It's still a great watch, but you know, it hasn't
kind of taken over. Maybe if he goes on some
sort of crazy run, maybe then we discuss it, But
I don't know. My point was, I'm struggling with every
day Jason and I talk, I'm like, what is something
baseball that is interesting to people? And I struggle with it.
(14:47):
Even if the games themselves are interesting, it becomes very
much inside the beltway of each of those cities in
regards to their interest. This is the Doug Gotlib show
here on Fox Sports.
Speaker 6 (14:57):
Is there one is? Can we like do a show
hey numbers?
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Analyzing of those numbers on when everyone believed that it
was his interpreter's fault as opposed to what they were,
when we thought maybe in those first couple of weeks,
can we break those numbers down at some point?
Speaker 5 (15:17):
I'm interested in that.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
Is he hitting now four sixty eight since it was
stated that he they found no evidence that he had.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
That's on the splits, that's on the split stand. And
he did, he did, he was. He hit two sixty
nine in March. In March twenty six at bats okay
twenty six, ably had seven hits. And then remember March
is when April kicked in. That's when he started to
warm up. That's when the interpreter thing went away. Three
fifty two and he's hitting three ninety.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
Wow, he loaded off his shoulders. No, he has only
one hit since it came out that his best friend
on the Angels is under investigation, so he might be
the burden might have picked up last night. He only
has one hit since that news story came out. Can
we do a new coun we do a new bit
(16:10):
on the show. I had our creators go to work
on this. You know, Veto works real hard on the
show and the network and Bob Schmidt. They put in
the work, and I want to make sure that this
doesn't go without acknowledging. Since Doug is now the head
coach of the Green Bay Phoenix, I think we could
(16:31):
do this every once in a while, probably on a date,
day to day basis, there's going to be a question,
a burning sports question that only a coach could answer, Oh,
I like this. So I put together this intro.
Speaker 7 (16:45):
There's a question that needs an answer, and the answer is.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
If only there was someone with the authority and the
wisdom to give us that answer.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
No, I'm the head coach. I get to set schedule.
Speaker 7 (16:56):
Hold on, let's ask the coach.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
I did love that from Daan, Like, what if you're
practicing in the afternoon, Like, who do you think that's
the practice time? But anyway, all.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Right, so we're doing ask the coach, what do you
think of the intro? I liked it good, Yeah, I
liked it. I liked it.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
How can you not like it?
Speaker 5 (17:14):
I specifically like this one part that I had Sam
set aside. I'm looking at Veto through the glass right
now and he's taking a bow.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
Hold on, let's ask the coach.
Speaker 5 (17:24):
So there's a basketball whistle in there, you know, the
small things you want.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
To know small things that I know. The whistle that
they use in basketball, the most high level is called
the Fox forty and it was developed by two different officials.
Their names are intertwined in there, and it's got this
little kind of side sort of rib, and it allows
you to blow that whistle shorter and tighter. That's how
much of the small details I know?
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Wow, yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
That's an old that's an old school whistle. That sound
a new school whistle.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Yeah, it's that's old school sound. So I figure the
way we can kick off this bit is to since
you know so much about each of these teams, I
would love to know, like you don't have to handicap
the series. I hate prediction radio, but I would like
you to tell us, like, if the Pacers are going
to win four out of seven games, how how are
(18:18):
they going to be able to do it?
Speaker 4 (18:20):
Like?
Speaker 5 (18:20):
What do they need to do? You know against this
like you said prohibitive favorite Celtics tent.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Well, I mean, look, here's where the matchup isn't good? Okay?
Is what do you think Jason? Like that when you
say when I say the Pacers, right, what's the strength
of that team?
Speaker 5 (18:41):
Let's see athleticism. Scoring.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
I don't know, yes, scoring, scoring is fine. I mean
they're leading the playoffs in scoring. They like to play
with at with great tempo. They led the NBA in
scoring this year at one hundred and twenty three game.
Do you know who is second in scoring in the NBA?
Speaker 5 (18:57):
I'm guessing Boston.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
That would be Boston. So the idea is they want
to play fast, they want to play free and wide open,
and the Celtics are like, yeah, we do two, we
do two. I mean, like, look, I think that obviously
Tyre's Haliburton has to play well and it'll be interesting
because the big move that was made this offseason for
(19:20):
the Boston Celtics was trading away Marcus Smart, right, and
Marcus Smart can be a lot of things, but he's
a tenacious, tenacious on ball defender, tenacious on ball defender.
So I mean, I think the first thing is obviously,
you know, what do they have to do well? And
it's lame to say, It's totally lame to say, but
(19:42):
it's not lame to point out that this is a
different Celtics team. When you're starting Derek White at the
point guard spot and then you have Jalen Brown, who's
a good defender, I mean, what do you have to
do well? Let's see if Prizingis plays, the Brezingis doesn't play.
I do think you can expose Al Horford and you
know if they when they go to Luke Cornett, I
mean he can't really move. He's just a pick and
(20:05):
pop shooter. And and the other part is, you know,
Drew Holiday has not had Drew Haliday's reputation when early
in his career we were like late to catch up
to just how good a player he is. He has
not had a great season this season. Now he's been
pretty good in the playoffs, but now it's not had
(20:26):
a great season this season. So, I mean, I think
the first thing is, you know, how is Drew Haliday
defensively against Tyrese Halburton as opposed to how Marcus Smart
would have been. And then it's continued to push the
tempo and try and get to the celticspense, especially if
the Celtics are playing without Christosh Ferzingis. I don't know.
(20:46):
I have we found out yet dan If Brazingas is
going to play.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
He's out the beginning of this series. They ruled him
out yesterday for Game one, and so Sophie's.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Out for the early part of the series. Even if
he does play in the series, it's going to be minutes.
And so I think you know that you want to
try and attack Al Horford, and you know, when Al
Horford's in the game offensively, you got to make him
dribble the basketball because now at this point in his career,
all he really wants to do is catch and shoot threes.
(21:15):
And then, Yeah, I think continue to push that temple
and use your youth as your strength.
Speaker 7 (21:21):
Hold On, let's ask the coach.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
I thought that whistle really makes it, doesn't it?
Speaker 1 (21:27):
I think it does.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Hold On, let's ask the coach.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yeah, isn't if hold on, we blow a whistle because
we asked the coach. I guess this is practice.
Speaker 7 (21:38):
We both the wish just play along.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
I'm just playing along. I'm just trying to you know,
maybe I'm getting too literal.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
You getting too technical with it.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
I am getting too technical with it.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
You're saying, O wistle should proceed.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Hold on, Well, no, just a whistle is more if
there's a I guess that whistle in practices. But asking
the coach, you know, usually you'd blow the whistle, you'd ask,
you'd go for a replay. Just Scott Mountro, I'm being
I'm being annoying. I got it.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
You know me too much.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
No, I'm just being too literal with things. That's That's
really what it kind of comes down to.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports
Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you from
the tyred dot com studios. You know what happened for
the first time and I can't remember, however, is I
heard an interview that Sirius XM had with Bronnie James.
(22:39):
Here's Lebron, Here's Lebron James, You and or Brinne James
on what it's like to be well him.
Speaker 8 (22:45):
What was the decision making process like for you to
turn pro because it seems like it has just recently
come down where you decide to stay in the draft.
Here you are here at the combine in Chicago. What
was that whole process like? And maybe take us through
your decision making You.
Speaker 9 (22:58):
Know, I always want to where I'm happy the most.
Mom has always told me, you know, take me where
my heart wants me to be. And you know, I
just I just found found happiness and what I'm doing
right now, and I feel like that's where I want
myself to be at.
Speaker 8 (23:13):
What is it like to play the game of basketball
when your father is one of the all time great
of the sport tough.
Speaker 9 (23:19):
A lot of criticism gets thrown my way, but you know,
I got to deal with it. They don't know what
I've been through. But yeah, I just I just try
to make the best of my opportunities that's given to me.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
That's fair. I just look, I have always looked at
it from a lens. I think of not positivity, negativity,
of just being honest, right, and the good thing, by
the way, now of him declaring that he's staying in
the NBA draft, is I can continue to comment like
(23:52):
if he's a college player, it makes it a little
trickier being head college coach. But now that he's going
to be a pro, I don't I think it's a mistake. Now,
it doesn't mean you can't develop in the G League,
but the way to truly stick and develop to get
the best the best basketball. Like Drew Joyce played growing
up with Lebron James. They are lifelong friends. Why wouldn't
(24:15):
you just go play for him for a year where
you can play thirty minutes, make mistakes, explore your game.
But I also think that, and I'm sure there'll be
people that take shots that I'm for saying you don't
know what I've been through, but we don't do you
know what it's like to be the guy who's you know,
every time your dad walks in, there is just this massive, massive,
(24:39):
not just physical but you know, figurative shadow. Look, I
like him to make it. I mean, he's gonna make it,
but I'd like him to earn it and make it.
It wouldn't be the first time this is a favor
on NBA roster. We'll see. We've seen that in Milwaukee
for years. And I can't imagine what it's like to
(25:02):
be the son of Lebron. But I just think in
terms of individual decisions, the best one would have been
to go play for Ducune. Go, you know, get a
ton of reps, succeed, some fail, some succeed mostly again,
and instead now you know it's going to be probably
G League, and then hoping for the occasional call up
(25:25):
to be with your dad. Can he develop? Yeah, people develop?
The likely it is gonna be hard, all right? Well,
John's are John Middlecoff joins just three and ounce the
podcast and the Volume podcast network, And Johnny, how are you?
Speaker 10 (25:42):
I'm good?
Speaker 1 (25:42):
How are you doing good? How would like? What are
your I know you have the Going Low podcast as well,
so we usually have you on to talk football, but
The Going Low is a golf podcast. What do you
think about what happened with Scotty Scotty Scheffler going back
to last Friday.
Speaker 10 (26:00):
You know my overall take. Obviously, the situation transpired because
of the traffic backup because someone died, which was a disaster.
But I think the visual of him in an orange
jumpsuit and from people that don't know because he's despite
being the best player, he's not like Tiger famous or
Phil famous. I mean, he's probably the most low key,
(26:24):
you know, god fearing. He's pretty boring, and for that
to happen to him, I truly believe, Doug, it's one
of the most interesting things that happened to golf in
a long long time. I Mean, one thing that's riddled
with the sport right now, which I think fans are
tired of and ratings have been down, is just talking
about rich guys getting richer, you know, with the Saudi's,
(26:46):
with the new equity. Like, people are tired of that
crap and just want, you know, fun, interesting stuff, and
I think this kind of adds to his legend. I
mean he's so good. He's basically a two and a
half to one favorite this week in Congressional and I
actually think it's a pretty good bet. And that visual
(27:07):
of the orange jumpsuit is just something like when it
happened to Tiger. You know, we all saw that Duy video.
That's a tough watch, you know, this one. I think
most people are like, this is probably pretty stupid, and
I think it just adds. It helps just get him
on the radar of a lot of casual fans that
probably weren't paying attention.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Yeah, what's amazing was how well he played that day
and then of course didn't play nearly as well on
the Sun Saturday.
Speaker 10 (27:33):
I think, you know, I can't imagine. I've never been
detained or locked up been close in my younger years,
but I would imagine the adrenaline his his caddie, Ted Scott,
who's a longtime guy for Bubba Watson and who came
to Scottie and they've been a dominant parent had to
fly back. I don't know where his kid went to
(27:53):
high school, but he graduated high school, so he was gone.
So like the PGA tour pastor who they're really close with,
caddied it probably didn't help. Could you look at his
other three rounds? You know it's crazy. I think he's
gonna win the US Open at Pinehurst, and hell he
might win the British Open as well. We'll look back
and go if that incident doesn't happen, I think there's
(28:16):
a very good chance. You know, Scotty won all.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Four Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Trader. Let's
turn our attention to football. You know, we've seen what
Detroit has done in terms of their quarterback with his money,
and it does feel like, you know, cost certainty, you
know cost certainty, you know who he is. I mean
(28:40):
like he's Matt Ryan two point zero?
Speaker 9 (28:41):
Right?
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Is that fair?
Speaker 10 (28:44):
Yeah? I mean he's he's a really good player who
you just feel feel good about. And now he's proved
he can win playoff games multiple places, which is more
to say than some of these other guys, right, didn't
want money.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
I do think it's said there'd be an interesting deep
dive there. I know that that Sean McVay didn't draft
him and he got frustrated by him. But and I
know they won a super Bowl, but it'd be really
interesting to know in everyone's heart of hearts, if that
is still the right call. What do you say that
was that still the right call for them?
Speaker 10 (29:13):
Well, Stafford's I mean a much better play. I mean
Stafford when he's on, I don't think there's much of
a gap between him and the other cats. We talk
a lot about Mahomes Alan Burrow. I mean, he's right there,
he's I mean, honestly, when he's on, he's as good
as a guess. I think when you factor in the
age and some of the other stuff. Big picture maybe,
but you know, it's like Winhorse says about the NBA,
(29:36):
when you win a title, you never have to apologize,
no matter how crappy or dumb the trades look. I
think that trade still looks pretty good. It didn't look
good two years ago when he was banged up, and
the Lion's really benefited on that trade, ended up getting
their star young running back and you know, a tight
end that has a chance to be like Kelsey two
point zero. But they kind of answered the fell this year.
(29:57):
And I thought Stafford at games last year, I mean,
that's one of the best games of the year with
that Ravens game on the road, where I think that's
good of a game, as I saw all last year
when you factor in the element. So I think the
Rams feel pretty good about it. Even McVeigh, you know,
he's he's younger. I think it's kind of apologized for
the way he publicly handled it, because one thing's pretty clear,
(30:20):
he was your coach. Now you got to get frustrated
at your players. We're all humans, just like in any business,
you get frustrated with someone you're working with, But in
a public job like that, with a good guy like
a GOP is definitely not someone who anyone's having any
character questions with. I think they and let's think the Lions.
(30:42):
You know, one of the best trades you know, Quinn
the GM clearly is ever going to make is he
was offered the same thing by the Niners and the
line two first round picks Jimmy Garoppolo ver Jared Goff
and he one. Now it turned out because the Niners
were good too years ago. The Rams tick was way
more valuable, but you didn't know that at the time.
(31:04):
But to get Golf over Jimmy Garoppolo, I'd say aged
pretty well.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
I would definitely say it aged very very well. Looks
like an absolute genius move, even though as we established,
that wasn't my question. But you did do a nice job.
You did a nice job with it. Johnny. By the way,
what did you say was what was your honest reaction
when I got the job?
Speaker 10 (31:30):
Excited for you? I mean, you and I have been
talking for years. I know you're interested in these jobs
and listen. I think the number one thing I tell
everybody is, uh, you know, follow your passion. And I
last week, maybe the day after we talked, I watched
your press conference and Maria looked at me, and I'm like,
She's like, God, he's a good speaker. I'm like, heah,
(31:51):
he's a broadcaster. He knows what he's doing. But you know,
you talking about how much it means to you, and
you know when you get a niche I think in life,
especially the older you get, I think life's too short
and you get these opportunities. I didn't know listening to
you talk about your history in the area, your dad
started there, or when you were born, your dad was
(32:13):
coaching there. Listening to coaching the best coaches I've been
around by a mile, Pat Hill and Andy Reid. You know,
Pat Hill was I think the first million dollar non
Power five coach, and Andy's made an ungodly amount of money.
Their passion for football is I'll never meet anyone that
loves football more than Andy Reid. And you know that's
(32:36):
a passion. And I say this all the time, like
I realized why I'm better at my job now than
I ever would have been in the NFL, is like
I don't know if I love football enough, and I
don't think fans quite realize, like the deep yearning cashing
for the sport and you obviously being around at your
whole life playing it the love. You can't fake that. So,
(32:57):
like you said, it doesn't guarantee wins or long but
that passion gives you a chance. So let's face you
know a lot of coaches now in all these sports
and gms, with the money flying around sports, you know
some guys I don't want to say they're in it
for the wrong reasons, but it's hard to match that passion.
Let's face it, the best coaches in the history of
time have all had this deep burning love. I would
(33:21):
say practice. You know, basketball is a little different football
because you practice so much. These guys love going out
to practice.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Yeah, you have to love it. I will tell you this.
And obviously I'm not allowed to talk about prospects and stuff,
but I had like the things that gives me goosebumps
is I I got a commitment from a player who
we're not ready to announce it just yet, but he
had he had two questions for me. Okay, guess what
(33:49):
the questions were.
Speaker 10 (33:52):
Uh, probably not nil because that wouldn't be your style.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
It could be, could be, but but no, it was not.
I would say, coach, how about this one? Coach? Can
I get in the gym twenty four hours a day?
And Coach can't? Are we going to win? I don't
want to go to a place where we lose. Job
(34:16):
to lose, right And I said, And I said, well,
I wouldn't be talking to you right now if you
weren't going to help us win. And I and I said, like,
tell me I lost my first year at Notre Dame.
Tell me where I lost outside of that, but I
need you to help me win. And yeah, whatever you want.
Here's the keys. I have a key right here. It's
it's yours.
Speaker 10 (34:36):
So I think there is that out there.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
I know there's the you ahead. I'm sorry the power of.
Speaker 10 (34:43):
Coaching that I was and I was around Andy probably
his late fifties. Coach Hill was probably his early sixties.
You know, your children are getting younger, they go off
to college, you don't you know, see them every day.
It keeps you so young. You know, you meet these
coaches that are people like how does Pete look so
young around twenty three year olds every day?
Speaker 1 (35:01):
Sure, you know, So.
Speaker 10 (35:03):
There's a power in that that. Let's faith that most people,
I don't care how successful you are in your industry,
the older you get, you're usually not as around young
people as much, you know, and that there's a there's
a power to that that I don't think we ever
talk about in sports when it comes to coaches, and
I would say most older guys, there's a there's a
(35:24):
you know, like a life preservation is the wrong word,
but it keeps you going that a lot of people
just don't get in their life. And that's a powerful thing.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
No question about it. Doug gotlib show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Okay, in regards to quarterbacks and money, what
ultimately can we use as a guide to Craft two?
As next?
Speaker 10 (35:46):
Heal Well, I'm going to beat the drum here until
if they announce the contract, but if they don't, I
think it's the one right move. What has ever, Like
all we hear about is it's going to it's gonna
cost more. Well, if it's gonna cost more and I
feel good about it, then who cares? You know, the
(36:08):
Lions could have given Jared goffa contract extension last year,
but you can give contract extensions whenever you want. But
think how much more he validated it. And the NFC East.
Now you know the Bills. I think the Bills they're
gonna be might pick to win the division, but they
obviously have a lot of turnover on their roster. Belichick's gone,
and the Jets are like two hamstrings away from being
(36:29):
in shambles. That I just think, can you win the division?
Can you get us a home playoff game? And then
can you play well in that home playoff game? Because
there's obviously value. I remember when Dak signed his contract,
I thought it was pretty nuts by this for Dak
every year. You know, the last three years are a
good example, twelve wins and they've won the division two
out of three times. Now he didn't play well in
(36:50):
the playoffs, but he's hosting the playoffs. He's putting them
in a position to it. Last year down the stretch
wasn't as good, right, and they were in a position
where it looked like they were going to cruise the
Divis championship. The Bills are six and six. The dust
settles and the Bills are hosting playoff games, and the
Dolphins are one and done because they have to play
in freezing cold weather. The other thing in the AFC
is you know, the NFC, if you got golf or
(37:12):
you got pretty you know, you feel pretty good.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
You know.
Speaker 10 (37:14):
In the AFC, it's like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow,
Josh Allen, now Herbert gets Harbaugh, like, you better if
you just signed one of these contents. You just saw
it with Russell Wilson and they signed a huge contract
and then immediately they knew they couldn't compete against the best.
It was obvious. It was evident back when Nathaniel Hackett
was over his hid. So you better be very careful
(37:36):
in that conference about because these these these deals are
so much greater than all these other positions. Like Bosa
got the most money ever and it was like one
hundred and twenty million dollars guaranteed. Got got fifty million
dollars more guarantee that those are seasons where you're basically
on scholarship with his contract, so you better. I just
(37:58):
I don't know the rush. Like he's on the books
this year for twenty three million, he's got a great
opportunity to kind of prove it. Again, he's obviously a
solid player, but there's a big difference between a solid
player and giving a guy I don't know, one hundred
and eighty million dollars guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
No question about it. Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. That's the voice of the one and only
John Middlcoff. Of course he joins us year and you
can check out his podcast it's called it's called three
and Out. What do you think happens in Minnesota where
you have a JJ McCarthy, but then you have a
(38:35):
Sam Donald And of course remember like Donald, of course
in San Francisco. Again, some their their general manager comes
over from San Francisco, So there's the ties there. On
the other hand, you're going to play the kid. How
do you handle it?
Speaker 10 (38:50):
I think it's a pretty easy one because JJ McCarthy
shouldn't be able to beat out Sam Donald. So you
basically have you know, a quote unquote competition, and Sam
starts with the ones, and if he just takes it
prom then you go with JJ McCarthy. But if he can't,
then you just sit them, develop them and let him
learn and make them your backup quarterback. My guess is
(39:12):
Sam Donald's started quarterback week one, and if they're a
competitive team, you know, a round five hundred and in
the wildcard mix, JJ McCarthy will just get his red
shirt ear and if things go a little poorly, like
we know how this works in modern day football, that
guy comes in. Now you got to be careful with
that because the things aren't going well. Is he overwhelmed
(39:32):
as the ruinous confidence? But there are also examples of
guys Jared Gott's rookie It was awful and he bounced
back fine. But my guest is Sam Donald's playing obviously
if healthy, as long as they're just competitive, and I
think that was the plan all along. That's why they've
paid the guy. Say this for I've been critical of
(39:53):
New England, but both those teams were in positions to
like pay eight ten million dollars get a bridge quarterback
and just give themselves a deep breath. Now, Minnesota, I
think we'd all agree because we like their coach and
they have more talent on their roster, could just be
a competitive team with Sam Donald. It's very like it's
hard with Jacoby Brissette, thinking they're going to win many
(40:15):
games and let's fake it. Like I do believe the
fans and just kind of the narratives have a lot
of pull in the NFL because that's kind of what
the owners watch. So Robert Craft's getting crushed if they're
you know, two and eight, Like, no one's gonna want
to watch Jacoby Brissett and you're forced to throw this
guy out, you know, to the Wolves before he's ready.
At least with JJ McCarthy, if you have to do that,
(40:38):
they got enough weapons on offense they can keep it
relatively simple and make him look, you know, ideally not
bad his rookie season.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Johnny, you are the best man. Crazy stuff when we're
talking about stuff with cops and a golfer on the
way to his round and and not talking about that
with football. So always always interesting going though is the
golf podcast Three and Out is the Big Podcast that's
covers the nation Fooball League. He's the one only. John Middlecoff,
you know I I got a country club membership as
(41:09):
part of the deal here, dude, not bad, not bad.
So what I'm saying is, grab the sticks. You and
I will go over. We'll hang with Mark Murphy. He's
a friend, he's awesome. And then we'll go out to
Oneada country club and we'll hit him.
Speaker 10 (41:23):
Let's get it, Let's get a fight some Murphy floor.
Goot me and you.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
You want that?
Speaker 10 (41:30):
I mean, you don't got to tell me twice. I'll
be on a plane tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
I'll set it up. We'll text you. Thanks so much, John,
be buddy, all right, stug Gottlieb Show. John Middlecoff being
on a plane tomorrow, that's not hard, not bad at all.
We gotta gotta find that golf time for the president
of the Green Bay Packages Doug Gotleb Show here on
Fox Sports.
