Speaker 2 (00:39):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
No, you're too kind, You're two too time.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
You.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
I kind of would do that thing that politicians always
do right when they get to the stage and they
just randomly point to people. Huh, that's what I'm doing.
I'm pointing to Jay stew pointed to Dan Bayer, I'm
pointing to Big Apple Sam, just pointing to people to
point to people. That's That's what I'm That's what I'm doing.
It's a Friday, it's a football Friday. It's also a
(01:10):
game day Friday. Kids game day, we'll see if our
luck's a little bit better, you know, I mean just
just you know, uh, Dan Byer and Jay Stu, you
guys are zero and one like right like, if we
win tonight as home underdogs to Saint Thomas. If we
win tonight and we you and I we didn't do
(01:32):
a remote I didn't see you in person, that means
we probably can't ever see you in person. This is
your bad luck.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
I tend to look at it as if you win tonight,
then we should never sit in the two hundred section
again because you won't win. That's how I enough at.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It, fair enough. That's also a good point. Just want
to just want to point out I've gotten to the
battle about the bottom of the OSU ticket fiasco, and
everyone else is like, not me, it's this person, not me,
it's this person. I found out who the person was.
She should feel shame. She should feel shame, regardless of
which I'm excited. We play a team called Saint Thomas.
Their nickname is the Tommys. Can't make that up. In
(02:10):
twenty sixteen, they won the Division three national championship. They're
very well coached, they're super efficient, they're a Division One
team now in the Twin Cities. They play in the
Summit League, and I feel like tonight's a root canal.
They're just they're good. They're the opposite of Oklahoma State
in that it's really a thinking man's skill game, whereas
(02:31):
Oklahoma State beat us with just brawn, toughness, athleticism and
an effort. They had great effort. So we'll see and well,
we will do our best. I just I'd very much
like to win a game. That'd be fun. It'd be fun.
Speaking of winning game and it being fun and hard,
(02:51):
I thought Thursday Night football was good. We we kind
of hyped up the game and it lived up to
the hype end of the day. And we'll play for
you what al Michaels said at the end of the game.
Al Michael's kind of a curmudget. But the Bengals had
a big lead, Ravens came storming back. Bengals were down one,
had a chance to either tie it or go for two,
(03:14):
as we told you who as the Damp Bay Buccaneers
should have done going back to Monday Night. They did
go for two, didn't get it, and so they lose
the game. But it's it's really the perfect fourth quarter
from Lamar Jackson that I think is the first jumping
off point, right, do you believe that Lamar Jackson and
what they're doing, Not just what they're doing because they've
(03:36):
dominated or played well in the regular season before, he's
been in an NFL MVP before, but it's the ability
to come from behind as a team that's trailing, especially
in the second half, that people, even like myself, said, Hey,
I get it, he's way better than we ever thought.
But in that style, that running quarterback run base style,
(03:57):
can you come from can you can you lead a
team to a win from behind? Last night? The answer
is absolutely. Here's John Harbaugh's head coach.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
We're very grateful for that win, and we're very grateful
for our guys. Man, the way our guys play, how
they fight, how they don't give up. Just what he said,
you're still time on the clock. You keep fighting. Found
a way right down to the end, even the defense
getting the stop on the two point play, and that's
what it took. It took a stop at the end
to win the game. And our defense did that. Our
Darius made that play and the past rush was there too.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yeah, I mean like, look, I don't think the Ravens
defense is particularly good, but it shouldn't It shouldn't be
lost on us, shouldn't be lost in us that the Bengals.
Part of having a big lead and giving up the
big lead is the Ravens defense had to get some stops.
How to get some stops and they did so. Here's
Zach Taylor. That's the Bengals head coach summing up the loss.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
There's a good football team, but we expect to come
in here and win, and we did everything we could do.
That seems the fact that I'm proud. I think everybody
on that field fought, gave us a chance. Austin came
on the road to a good team, and it's sickening
that this has happened twice us.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Here's Joe Burrow talking about losing another close game.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
You just gotta make the make the opportunities that are there,
make the plays. You know, we did in spots and
we didn't in spots tonight, and that's the story of
our season. So you know, I'm going to do everything
in my power to continue to be ready for the
opportunities that come try to take advantage of them.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Here's al Michaels not thrilled with how the game ended.
Too many games in this way. Yeah, yep, you miscaused
the whole thing. It's so frustrating. Another thing so frustrating. Now,
when you're talking about the miss calls, is he talking
about what would have been passed interference? I always watched
(05:44):
the game. I thought the game ended because j just sick.
He could wasn't really open in the end zone. It
might have been p I super physical down at the
end of a game. I don't know what he preferred
a penalty flag on that one. Help me out, Dan Byra,
because was that was used upset?
Speaker 3 (06:00):
There were there were three penalties. There was Kasiki getting
off the line of scrimmage, which was a hold. There
was the end of the play where Joe Burrow was
actually hitting the face mask from one of the defenders.
And then actually the play that where the ball was
going was to Tanner Hudson. Another tight end on Cincinnati
(06:21):
where the pass interference seemed to be the most visible
when the ball just sailed right out of Hudson's reach.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
They swallowed their whistles. Let's just be honest. They swallowed
their whistles. Yes, I mean, there's We're going to have
to get some people to get to Baltimore because I
believe all of those officials have to have their risk.
The whistles removed from their sternum as they've ingested them.
And part of this is life on the road. Part
(06:48):
of this is this is what the Ravens do. And
it's a little bit of I just I'll relate it.
When we played against Oklahoma State on Monday, they foul
so much and they grab and hold and bump you
so much that at some point officials kind of get
numb to it and like, I'm not gonna call foul
every time. That's bad officiating, just sick. He was an
(07:13):
obvious hold. Didn't affect the play, but an obvious hold.
I didn't love the play call like they've been. It
was basically Jamar Chase, Jamar Chase, Jamar Chase, Jamar Chase.
So either you throw it to Jamar Chase or you
use Jamar Chase in like a pickplay, don't you I
(07:34):
get what they were trying to do. Hey, our tight ends,
we have two of them, big targets over the middle.
Go and get some which we think are size mismatches
and again, I don't know enough about scheme wise, and
the face mask wasn't egregious, but far less egregious things
(07:54):
have been called. I thought what was egregious was early
in the game when he was hit, and when when
Joe Joe Burrow hit hard and there was no roughing call,
and it was like so painfully obvious, like now guys
get like a half step instead of a full step,
and it was like three steps then he got hit.
(08:14):
I don't believe that's why the Ravens won the game.
I do believe they miss some calls, but I also
think that part of this is the trend in the NFL,
and I watch games every weekend and in college football
as well. I do feel like they've allowed the defense
to get far more physical, especially in the red area,
(08:34):
and they've made teams win the game instead of throwing
a flag and giving them the ball to one foot line. Dan,
no one watches more football than you. Is it fair
to say it's kind of a trend in football college
and pro of them letting them play a lot more
around the goal line.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Yeah, I think so. I also think in a standalone game,
you know, all eyes are going to be on that game.
So I kind of wonder why they would let them play,
considering this is gonna be the topic of conversation that
we are talking about. But I think yeah, and I
don't think let them play is fair. I don't think
that's it's fair for either side in terms of that
(09:14):
sort of reasoning, because that would give the offensive player
just as much reason to push off in the end
zone on a play, or anybody else to make a
play that would allow them to get free. So, yeah,
just bad calls, and to have three of them come
on one single play with nothing coming out, you're wondering
(09:35):
what the refs are actually watching in the game. But yeah,
I think you're I think it's fair to say that, yeah,
let him play. But then you have what today is
and here we are all talking about what happened in
that last sequence.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Yeah, I listen. I'm not going to get caught up
in the last sequence. I thought there were misscalls throughout
the game. I just my focus is on on the
Ravens because they've been good for a while, right, They've
been good for a while, and yet they have yet
to do anything really of substance. With Lamar Jackson at
(10:07):
quarterback and you're just trying to figure out is this
year different than other years, not just because you have
Derrick Henry, but has he and has his control of
this offense. Remember last year was the first year in
this offense, as his understanding control of this offense will
allow them to play better when it actually really matters. Now,
what is and here is more to your point and
(10:30):
to al Michael's point, is the Bengals. While while there's
a lot of mediocrity in the NFL and the Bengals
defense isn't particularly good, Bengals is a pretty good football team
when they're healthy with at least those two on offense
like they got, and I'd like to see them in
the playoffs. You can't artificially make it happen. And they've
lost a bunch of these close games, and you're trying
(10:51):
to see, like, all right, can they still make the
playoffs despite yet another close loss.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
You know, it's funny, Doug, because they've played two close games,
both that went to well near the end. Overtime was
the first game in Cincinnati. But one is four and
six and one is seven and three. And I would
say that Baltimore and Cincinnati are down near the same team,
especially when you consider what Baltimore's defense is. And I
(11:18):
actually think that Baltimore's defense has allowed Lamar Jackson to
have more of the opportunity to put on a case
for a third MVP, because they aren't good right now.
Like they gave up ten points to Denver a week ago,
but prior to that it was in any better we
mentioned the Bengals, or they gave up thirty eight, gave
up twenty three to the Commanders, gave up thirty one
(11:39):
to the Buccaneers, and they gave up twenty nine and
a loss to Jameis Winston and the Cleveland Browns, And
so like when I look at the Ravens and I
look at this game, it's yeah, the in Cincinnati really
aren't that different. Three games separate them because the Ravens
won two of them against them, but they're no different.
And in that sort of case, like I think of
Kansas City going to go into Kansas City like you
(12:01):
did week one and challenge them again, or is Kansas
City gonna play playoff football and realize that they can
score at will against your defense and all of a
sudden you're having a more tougher time scoring against them.
That's what I think is more likely. So I think
at the Ravens win last night, and I'm like, maybe
they aren't the great team that I thought they were.
They're great offensively and Lamar is magnificent, but they have
Jamar Chase of two hundred and sixty plus yards against you.
(12:25):
I mean, he's the only guy they have. Te Higgins
what didn't even play?
Speaker 1 (12:30):
I was that was an all time That was like
a Cooper Cup in the Super Bowl where everyone knew
one guy was getting the ball and yet he kept
being open. And by the way, Burrow Man, I mean
that guy. I love how Burrow plays. He kept delivering
the ball. There's literally one guy that was a whole offense.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
I felt like, yeah, what what did Joe Burrow? What
did Lamar Jackson do that Joe Burrow didn't do a
side to have a couple of crazy scrambles and I
would say none, nothing, but the.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
One scramble was crazy, like he ran backwards twenty five
yards and then just it was like that's like some
stuff you see in video games or like Techmobile where
you beat a guy to the edge and then all
of a sudden he's on the sideline and they can't
tackle him like that was That was crazy. But outside that, no,
Joe Burrow was probably the better quarterback to be honest,
but Lamar does have those couple of scrambles which are
(13:23):
obscene in and look, Joe Burrow did a bunch outside
the pocket. He's just not running it as much because
he'd been hurt before hurt off.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yeah, and it's not his game. He's not gonna do
what Lamar does.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
And I thought he runs the throw. Lamar runs to
sometimes throw, but mostly runs to run.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Yeah, I mean it was all on Burrow's shoulders last night. Anyway,
they threw it fifty six times and there was a
point where they were up twenty one to seven in
this game, which is a whole other story with Cincinnati,
Like Cincinnati doesn't have themselves. They there was a point
where they went for fourth and two in Burrow threw
one deep to Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
I don't know why you don't just kick a field
goal in that scenario you go up four and then
he's the scenario that we saw last night where it
comes down to one play on a two point conversion,
but you score, and if you kick that field goal
and things play out like they play out. That go
ahead touched on for Cincinnati is to take the lead,
not to try to tie the game.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Right, and they have a good it's not like they
don't have a good kicker within the confidence the right
and Justin Tucker missed an extra point like this, There
were some things that went for you last night.
Speaker 7 (14:25):
This is the best of the Don dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Doug gott Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Jared Smith's gonna
join us upcoming in about five minutes. But if it's
your first time listening to the show on a Friday,
just know that we use this time to give you
one pick, just one pick that can change your life.
(14:52):
We call it the Gambler. Every one of us has
one pick or sitting on that we think we know
the answer to your betting woes. We always start this
segment with the esteem producer of this year program, who
gives you the Jay stew Team parlay. Here's Jason Stewart.
Speaker 8 (15:16):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. We've got
a couple of homdingers to start the go to the
beding windows. We got two games ordinately to start us off.
On a Friday. I want you to pair Memphis, who's
giving seven points to Rice, and I like lake Forest
at home at a plus seven and a half. They're
(15:39):
playing col tonight, and just a quick message for cal fans, KYLEO.
Bowler's not walking through that door tonight. So pair wake
Forest with Memphis at your Jay stew team parlay for
the weekend.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Thank me on.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Monday game girl, Iowa, Sam.
Speaker 9 (15:59):
I usually stay in the world of college football, but
I'm gonna stick true to my.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
You're not you're not talking any ish about Iowa. Tak
it on Ucla Iowa after their dominata after their win
against Nebraska.
Speaker 9 (16:12):
Well, you listen, Ucla is playing really well. I think
both teams playing their best ball right now. I ain't
touching that though that game is going to be a battle.
I'm gonna stick with the Jets as a slight road
favorite at the Cardinals. Give me the Cardinals to pull
this out. Let's go Cardinals get the win out right.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
I actually like that pick a whole heck of a lot.
It's one of the first smart things you say in
the history of ever. Thank you, Dan Byer.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Yeah, Doug, you know there's a there's a funny scheduling
quirk in the National Football League. The Chicago Bears had
to play in London in Week six and a buy
in Week seven, and then they had road games Week
eight and week nine. They're playing their first home game
in a month. They've been pretty good at home. In fact,
they're three and ozer this year at home, with wins
over the Titans Rams in Carolina. You say, well, those
(16:58):
aren't good teams. Neither is New England, who comes to
town this weekend. For as bad as things are for
the Bears, there's still a better football team than the
Patriots are. Give me the Bears to cover at home
against the Pats on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
You know, I'm looking at my dog here, who just
I gave him a bath this morning, and of course
he just got into the Green Bay chasing after probably
a dead fish or something during one of the breaks.
Nice stinks, But I do like dogs, home dogs, especially
We're a home dog tonight the Green Bay. We're a
home dog against Saint Thomas.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yes you are.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
I also like the Ole miss Rebels as home dogs
are taking on the dogs. George bulldogs. Now I know
you're looking at Georgia and you're sitting there going there
like Doug, there're seven to one. They beat Texas at Texas.
But I think if we're honest with ourselves, Carson Beck
has not been nearly as good this year as I
think people thought he would be. Is that fair, Dan
(17:59):
byer Man?
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Yeah, I mean this is this is a guy who
people thought in any conversation the best quarterback in college football,
and he just hasn't been great. Now they're taking out
Old Miss. Reps do have too two losses on the
on the season, I get it, but they have they
have their own star quarterback.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
No Wind a full the no Wind walk away.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
They're a two and a half point dog at home.
I'm gonna take Old Miss, give me the Reps. Let's sing,
They'll be timon Accountain when the actually, Dan, honestly, can
you just hit me with ears like the fantasy guru
hit me with the big which is which news is
the biggest for fantasy football? Uh?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Are you giving me options? He's just telling me just
what is a what is a big I'm just.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Asking you, like you give a bunch of updates and
stuff because it's your job to give updates. But I
know in your heart of hearts, there's one that's like
this one actually affects some fantasy football a lot more
than the I'll say.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
This, the Commanders aren't expected to have Brian Robinson again
against Pittsburgh. That's going to put a lot on the
shoulders of Jad and Daniels. So yeah, look for that one.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Okay, and good stuff. That's the one. Only Dan Byer
you'll hear from him with the press upcoming. In the meantime,
let's turn to Jared Smith. He's our FSR betting analyts
co host of the Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff
with Rich Ornberger and Brian No that's like tomorrow morning,
nine am to noon Eastern time. Listen live on a
Fox Sports Radio Fillis or the iHeartRadio app presented by
Bett mg M. Jared, Let's my pick of the week
(19:34):
was Old miss their Dogs at Home to the Dogs.
I saw the line as two and a half. Who
do you like in that sec showdout.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yeah, it looks like three is kind of we're kind
of hovering around that key number three. I've seen some
movement on the under today and that was the direction
that I wanted to lean towards because I think the
injuries on both sides are certainly impactful. Here. For Ole
miss Paris, the running back out Harris is the leading
receiver in the SEC, despite the fact that he's missed
the last couple of games is doubtful. I think he's
going to give it a go. Watkins, their number two
(20:06):
receiver questionable. I'm hearing he will play, and I'll be honest,
Lane Kiffin's kind of abusing the injury report privilege. They
had twenty five guys on the injury report this week
fifteen today. My guess is a lot of those guys
are gonna play, and Lane is just trying to There's
a little history between these two coaches, Lan Kiffin and
Kirby Smart's just trying to keep those cards as close
to the vest as possible. But the question is that
(20:27):
we're gonna get the big game, Lane, right, we haven't
seen the a stuff against the top tier teams, the
Bamas of the LSUS. They can beat up on the
on the smaller teams, But I still favor a Kirby
Smart defense I think against this Lane Kiffin offense. But
the question is, as you guys were talking about in
your Gambler segment, which, by the way, the new electric
segment in all of radio. I'm absolutely loving the Gambler segment.
(20:48):
He's a walking turnover this year, twelve turnover worth he
plays in his last five games. I think, if if
they can figure out a way to keep back clean,
I think Georgia wins this game. But I don't know
if I'm sure about that because this Old Miss defense,
they're long, they're strong, like they're number one and rush
yards allowed, so you know they're gonna take away. They run,
and they lead the nation in pressure and havoc. So
this to me feels like a really tight defensive game.
(21:11):
I went under fifty four and a half and I
think if it gets to three, that's where I really
like All Miss getting the points.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Stuck Otlap Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Jared, let's
go to a battle on the Big twelve. Colorado heads
to Texas Tech where they throw tortillas at opponents. We
know that all that well. Colorado right now in sort
of the driver's seat to be one of the two
teams in the Big twelve championship game. What are your
(21:36):
thoughts on the Texas Tech line, total and overall game line.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Yeah, nobody had a better week than Colorado. Not playing
last week, everything broke their way, including Texas Tech beating
Iowa State, which kind of opened up the Buffalo's path
to the Big twelve title game this number. This week,
it's kind of been sitting pretty you know, it moved up,
Colorado got a little money early in the week, and
then now we're kind of seeing it drift back down.
I would guess Colorado is a very popular pick this week.
(22:03):
Every time we have Seamus McGee, the bet MGM trading
director on the show Saturday morning, he's like, we just
need whoever Colorado's playing, And that's pretty much the vibe.
Everybody bets Colorado every week. And I understand why this
is becoming a team that is more balanced. Right. Colorado
last year really good offense, you know, high flying shud
or Sanders Travis, are not great defensively. Well, they're much
better defensively this year. Robert Livingston's done a really good job.
(22:25):
Top ten in the country points allowed after halftime, what
does that mean? They go in at half, they make adjustments,
and they've been fantastic in the second half of games
this year. Seventeen sacks in the last four games, so
they're making good adjustments and they're getting after the passer.
And you just look year over here. I mean two
touchdowns less allowed per game this season than last, one
hundred yards per game less this season than last. Outside
(22:48):
of Travis Hunter, they don't have a lot of dudes,
but they also don't have that glaring weakness where it's like,
all right, obviously we're going to attack this level of
the Colorado defense. They they're kind of balanced at each level.
The question here, can the pass rush get out Morton
who's kind of been unhealthy this year? Texas Deck has
got a great running game Tos Brooks. Every time we
hear postgame press conferences, anyone plays Texas Tech, everyone praises
(23:09):
TODs Brooks. Already over one thousand yards this year, his
fourth straight season. He will lead Texas Deck in rushing.
Morton's been efficient this year, only five interceptions. They've got
decent wide receivers. I think the question is, can that
Colorado pass rush, which has had its moments this year,
get after this quarterback who you know, only four sacks
allowed in the last five games, but not, excuse me,
(23:31):
four sacks allowed in the first five games for Texas
Tech nine sacks in the last four, so I think
the matchup to watch it. I know Colorado's going to
move the ball. We know they're going to move it
with Shador Sanders at Hunter in the run game. But
can that Colorado defense get after the passer? I think
they can and I know it's a popular play, but
I think Colorado's kind of sees the path and I
think all the stars are aligning. I think they win
(23:51):
this game. I think they get closer to that Big
twelve championship.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Uh you dub As Universia. Washington takes on Penn State.
Penn State coming off of a pretty devas lost at
home to Ohio State. They're thirteen point favorites. The totals
fairly low at forty six and a half. Who do
you like?
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yeah, I think the big question here, like the line
is telling you Penn State or passed, because you're like,
wait a minute, Penn State has not looked that impressive
this year. Now they're laying almost two touchdowns to a
Big ten opponent. And then you kind of dig deep
into Washington and we're about to find the answer to
the questions of how much the Big ten travel schedule
is going to impact these West Coast teams. It isn't
(24:27):
as big of a deal early in the year, but
now we've had multiple trips back and forth. For example,
Washington scheduled the last six weeks at Rutgers, then they
went back home to play Michigan, then they went to Iowa,
then they had a bye week, then they went to Indiana,
then they went back home to play USC. Now they're
back across the country to play Penn State. Two cross
country road trips, two Midwest road trips, a bye week,
(24:48):
and a home game. It's a lot of travel for
these teams. And I don't know what the impact is
going to be. But Penn State is a very physical
football team, like that's what they do. And Washington, they're
Their strength on defense this year is in the secondary.
They struggle to stop the run, and I think that's
the question the defensive line outside the top eighty and
a lot of the metrics. I look at Steve Belichick,
(25:09):
Baby Belichick not really adjusting against the run like Indiana
ran it all over Washington. Indiana is not a running team,
like They're kind of a spread out team. So I
know that Penn State doesn't have the weapons offensively to
maybe stretch you like an Indiana Wood or an Ohio
State would, but they're also very versatile. Culto Nikki, the
offensive coordinator, is a fantastic schemer. They're gonna move that
(25:30):
Tyler Warrenkott around. They don't have a lot of game
breakers at wide receiver, but they can run it effectively.
Washington struggles to stop the run, and I think this
is a right It's a must win game off a
loss for Penn State, and the market's kind of telling
me they're the right side. I would feel more comfortable
than usual laying a big number with the Nittney Lions
on set. Also, it's a white out night game. It'll
be crazy, crowd, happy belly.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Vandy a pretty good field, good story, but kind of
quietly so to South Carolina win their last two, beating
A and M at home last week. You know they
lost that close one to Alabama on the road, but
you look at Vandy. Vandy's a six point favorite at home.
This is a Vandy team that again at home, has
(26:13):
you know, taken down the likes of Alabama, Virginia Tech
and who else they beat. I'll be Kentucky on the
road right.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Yeah, and they played Texas tough too.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
They did play Texas tough. The totals forty six and
a half. It's in Nashville. Who do you like?
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, when you look at this line, you're like, wow,
exactly the thought process that you had. Well, Vandy's been
very competitive against some really good teams this year. Why
don't I want to take points at home against the
South Carolina team? That You look at South Carolina on
the surface and I think there is some upside, but
they're also very inconsistent, especially a quarterback. But really the
Vandy offense against the South Carolina defense, I think that's
(26:47):
why not only the game Cocks are favored, but you're
seeing this line move in their favor. South Carolina might
be the most talented defense in the country pound for pound.
I mean, they have dudes on the end that can
stop any play that you want. In Van runs Is
we talked about Vandy before. They're not a stretch the
field Ohio State offense. Alabama offense, it wants to throw
a deep but Jalen Milroe so good at throwing the
(27:08):
deep ball. Diego Pavia. It's like a ninja offense. They
want to drag you down into the muck. They slow
the pace down. They have a lot of intermediate stuff,
and they will grind you down. The weakness though for
Vandy is their offensive line. They're not very big, they're
not very long, they're not very athletic. Well, that's South
Carolina's strength. They've got two dudes on the edge, Stewart's
(27:29):
fantastic Canard on the outside eight and a half sacks,
and then they've got the kid Sanders in the middle.
Was the highest graded defensive tackle in the country last week.
I mean, they really put a hurt on what I
thought was a really good A and M team, But
they didn't make them. They made him look really bad
on Saturday. So I think this South Carolina defense has
a chance to really suffocate the life out of and Andy. Also,
(27:50):
the quarterback Diego pabi is less than one hundred percent.
I think you're gonna have to see an elite game
from Pabia. He's gonna have to play well. Despite the injury.
Vandy's defense has been over their top thirty and a
lot of the metrics I look at. Clark Lee's done
a good job. He's kind of taken over the defensive
play calling duties. He's allowed Jerry killing tim Beck to
handle the offense. I like that compartmentalization for this Vanderbilt team.
(28:12):
It's all about can Lenora Sellers, the South Carolina quarterback,
hold onto the football on the road, man, he's not
a tough road environment. But you know, it could be
a little tricky there sometimes depending on what the weather
will be in Nashville on a Saturday. But I think
South Carolina is the right player. I think the defense
really controls that Vandy offense, and I think I think
eventually Sellers makes enough plays to stretch this past the number.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
Both LSU and Alabama had last weekend off the loser.
I don't know if they're out, but man, it's gonna
be dicey. Bama is a two and a half point favorite.
Totals fifty eight and a half. It's under lights in
beaton Rouge.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
Yeah, I love this game. So I think if you
like Bama, bet him to make the playoff because their
schedule after this gets really simple. It's like Mercer and
Auburn and.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Alabama, oklahom on the road yet.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Yeah, like the road game in Norman will be the
toughest game, but there'll be a double digit favorite in
all three of their games. So if you like Alabama,
they're like minus one fifty on the money line to
win this game, just just bet them minus one twenty
five to make the playoff. You'll have to wait a
couple of extra weeks to cast your bet. But you know,
we're all about value here in the market. We're always
trying to find a little bit of extra edge. I
(29:21):
think the numbers right here, Like, honestly, I think Alabama
deserves to be favored. I think the question I have
for Alabama, Kaylen de Borr on the road in the SEC,
didn't look good at Tennessee, handled it at home against Georgia,
got off to the great start, barely hung on for
dear life. Like, we haven't seen Kaylen debor manage up
in those SEC games on the road, Whereas Brian Kelly
(29:42):
has kind of been there before, and I think we'll
see if his team is more prepared for this game
from the jump. I do trust the Boar more as
an in game x's and o's adjuster. So if it's
a positive game script for Alabama, yeah, I could see
them running away with this one. If it's a negative
game script. That's where you question this Alabama AF I
think they're more consistent in the running game this year
(30:02):
than in years recent with jam Miller, but Milrow it's
like it's boom or bust. And I think the defenses
are really starting to adjust to Ryan Williams. The freshman
sensation just one hundred and fifty eight yards ten yards
per catch the last three games. The first five games
he was twenty five yards per catch. So you really
see the adjustments being made to how teams are defending Williams.
(30:22):
In this Alabama offense, the question is can the O
line protect It has been an issue all year, It
was an issue last year. They're better than they were
last year, but that is a very low bar. Nine
sacks allowed the last three games. If you give up
four or five sacks in this game, you're not winning.
For LSU. On offense, they have to find the run game.
Couldn't run it against A and M, couldn't run it
against Ole Miss. They're coming out of the bye week.
(30:44):
They want more balance. All I hear from Brian Kelly
is multiple multiple. We need to be uncertain, meaning you
might run it, you might pass it, could be a screen,
could be misdirection. It's really just nus Meyer dropping back
and trying to make plays. I think that is where
Alabama has an edge here. If Bama can stop the
run and get Alerod hit a couple of those deep balls,
I think they go in to Death Valley and get
a win.
Speaker 1 (31:04):

Speaker 1 (31:31):
It's the Doug gott Leeb Show Fox Sports Radio. I
don't know, guys, like I kind of think last night,
Zach Taylor's call to go for two is pretty easy.
Their defense couldn't stop Lamar Jackson. Additionally, and like again,
(31:56):
I don't think it was about regulation the chance for
Justin Tucker to get a game winning field goal, but uh,
you know, just Ducker could very easily get a game
winning field goal. I thought going for two was was
the easy call my at the time, Dan Byer, was
that your thoughts as well?
Speaker 3 (32:14):
Absolutely, Doug in that situation with Joe Burrow on your side, yes,
go for two.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yeah, it's weird. It's like we do this. And again
when I say we, I'm going to say all of
us in media, even though Dan, Jay s dou even
even Big Apple Sam, we don't. But I do think
when I say we, I hate when people in the
media go like, you know, media guys like media guys like, well,
(32:44):
you're in the media, you're a media guy. So I
hate the we try and play both sides like, oh,
how could you go for two there? When just Monday
night it appeared pretty obvious that Tampa, especially as depleted
as they are, like go for two, Like, you know,
three yards you win a game. Win a game. You're
(33:08):
on the road against Baltimore, you've already lost them in overtime.
They have one of the all time great kickers. I
know he missed an extra point, so there's multiple opportunities
for him to beat you. Whereas you put the ball
in the hands of your best player and maybe throw
it to your best player. They didn't, but they did
put the ball in the hands of the best player.
They see what you do, see what happens. Here's Zach
(33:30):
Taylor after the game, asked about going for two, bus
two win. Came here to win, came win. And there's
the old NBA mentality, you know, if you're down two
on the road, go for three. But I don't even
think it was about being on the road. It was
just about, Hey, we had a chance to win a game.
(33:50):
Our best player is our quarterback, our second or maybe
our best players are wide receiver, our second best players,
our quarterback, whatever, like, why would we put in the
hands of the defense that didn't feel like it could
stop a nosebleed in the fourth quarter. Mark Dominic joins
us here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
A lot to dig into, Chris Mark's former general manager
(34:11):
of the tamp Bay Buccaneers, twenty five years of NFL front
office and scouting success. And let's start with the decision
to go for two at the time. Was it the
right call?
Speaker 10 (34:24):
Yeah? I think it was. I think your point. I mean,
there was a lot of obviously the big score for
the Bengals. There was an opportunity just to finish off
the game on the road, lots of momentum, huge drive.
I don't disagree with the mindset of saying, hey, let's
go win the game instead of playing for overtime on
the road against what you talked about, which I mean
Lamar Jackson was just as unstoppable as anybody else was
(34:45):
last night.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
I have this theory, maybe hypothesis, not theory. You know,
the Ravens are so physical, and they got called for
back to back penalties in that last drive as well.
It's almost like and basketball teams do this where if
you foul on every play, they get tired of calling fouls.
And I feel like that's a little bit of the
(35:08):
philosophy there. Am I wrong?
Speaker 10 (35:11):
No, not really, No, I don't. I mean I think
that there's some I think what you're talking about in
terms of, like, you know, if it's something you consistently do,
You've got to understand going into a game. You know,
not only do scouts, you know, evaluate the opponent, We
evaluate the officials. You know, we understand like this is
this crew, how have they called games in the past?
What do they let you get away? With more than
(35:33):
other official groups. What do they let you not get
away with? You take advantage of that, don't it. I
mean it's not just that you're just like which corner
is struggles or which guard is worse? Or where do
I want to run the ball? But also does this
crew let you do a little more holding? Does this
crew let you do a little more hand to hand combat?
And those are important parts that I think, you know,
maybe some fans don't realize that we're Scout an officialty group,
(35:54):
officiating group as much as were scotting the opponent.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Stuck out leave show here on Fox supports right. You know,
why do the Bengals keep losing close games?
Speaker 10 (36:04):
Well, I mean, to me, last night there was some
discipline problems. Even on that last touchdown you know where
you know they they scored the I think as good
as it was, I mean, it was a great route.
And again Lamar Jackson usually doesn't run up the middle,
he runs the side, but Ted Hendrickson's got to keep
him inside and he rushes inside and gets washed inside,
(36:24):
and that gives Lamar five more seconds to go find
a player. So I think there's just there's some discipline,
small things and again, Lamar Jackson is so hard to
deal with at this point in his career. But I
think that it's more of a just like little discipline
issues that cost them big last night. But I still
think although the Bengals are very much going to have
to go on uphill, it's a team that still scares
(36:46):
you to death to play him.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
I would agree. What is Jamar Chase's value in this
upcoming offseason?
Speaker 10 (36:55):
Yeah, I think he's going to be the highest pay receiver.
And I know he hadn't had the stats really, I mean,
he hadn't put down the Ceedee Lamb stats or the
Jefferson stats, but he put down great stats. But what
he's been able to do this year when you know
the backs against the wall and you've got to prove it,
you got an organization that usually makes you have to
play things out and you know, I know they've got
(37:17):
control on him, but I mean when you look at
the production this year, you know, with ten games in,
you're talking one hundred and twenty possible catch, hundred and
ten to hundred and twenty catches and you know, fifteen
to eighteen touchdowns. It's incredible. So it's the highest paid
receiver in the game is probably what he's going for,
and rightfully so.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio, Mark Dominic
is our guest. Is this Ravens team and I look,
I know the Bengals defense thinks okay, but still down
twenty one to seven. You know, the story had always
been against Lamar Jackson. It's more playoffs than the regular season. Hey,
they struggle. They struggle to make up big leads when
(37:55):
they're trailing. Right Is this team or is Lamar different
where you have more faith if they get behind in
the playoffs they can come back and win.
Speaker 10 (38:05):
It feels like, excuse me, It feels like they are
that kind of a team that can get behind to
find a way to work themselves out of it. You know,
this team's seven and three, excuse me, and they you
know the three games that they've lost her you know,
the first week was the touchdown, second game with three points,
and then the last game against the Cleveland Browns. You know,
they obviously lost that game by five. They have been
able to show that they can stay involved in any game.
(38:26):
I think Bateman's playing a lot better than I think
people realize. Dave Flowers has been this, you know, a
very big bell Weather player. But you know, just I
think across the board, they could stay in every game
because they can score forty points every week. And they've
shown that against the Denver Broncos, which is one of
the better defenses the Bucks. That's shown against the Bengals.
They can put so many points on the board that
they don't feel like they're down. So even last night
(38:47):
twenty one to seven, there was still way too much
time on the clock for them not to get back involved.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports, Trader, can you
explain that Jerry Jones, thinking he's always been at least
tried to be so honest with the media or people
when talking through the media, and then the team's falling apart.
The quarterback says they freaking stink, Only he didn't say
freaking and he didn't say stink. Now, the quarterbacks on
(39:13):
the ir they're not playing well, and he says Mike
McCarthy basically is everything he wants in a coach. Explain Well,
I think.
Speaker 10 (39:23):
Because he's there every day, he sees what Mike does
with the football team, probably he sees, you know, what
the offense has been capable of doing. He also sees
that obviously it's been a very very disappointing season, and
it's been an injury riddled season to some extent, and
it's been very difficult to deal with that, and so
I think he sees the bigger picture of saying, look,
the grass isn't greener and the change for the thicket
(39:43):
change sometimes doesn't result in a better outcome. So I
think there's just some patience there that he's trying to have.
And I know it's frustrated for Cowboys fans. You know me, Doug,
I've been I thought they're for sure that they were
going to be a playoff team. They're obviously going to
be very much struggling to even have a shot of
doing it with the injury they've had and now with
Dak Prescott being gone for a while. So I just
think that he realizes there's nothing you can really do
(40:05):
in season that's going to make a big difference. So
why push the panic button. Doesn't mean he's not thinking
about pushing it, but I think you don't publicly say
it because it's really not going to be your team
any good to go change a head coach right now
in the middle of the season that you know already
feels like it's badly becoming lost.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
It is. It's definitely becoming a lost season. This is
the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Explain
to me if you could the Miami Dolphins. This season
appears to be lost for them as well. I understand
(40:41):
you lost Tua and there's a gigantic drop off between
Tua and others, but there's something else amiss with this team.
What is it?
Speaker 10 (40:51):
Yeah, I mean, I think what you kind of see
the difference is is that they're not running the ball
nearly as effectively as I think they weren't twenty twenty three.
I mean, you know, our chain was average and almost
what was eight yards of carry and mostart was running
for five yards of carry. Most hearts now running for
four yards of carries. So I think it's the run
game as much as the obviously Waddle hasn't been involved
(41:11):
or Tyrie kill, you know, in terms of being on
the field, I think it's the run game kind of
gets everything going. Obviously, it's easy to talk about two
as well as the impact, but I think it's the
combination of those two things. Number One, your quarterbacks not
out there. And number two, obviously you're not physically running
the ball the way you have in the past, and
that seems to hurt this football team because they can't
seem to close. You talk about teams that aren't closing
(41:32):
out games their last three games they've lost, you know,
by I think a combined ten or eleven points for
three losses. That's you know, the difference for them being
in the playoff hunt not And I think it's because
they can't run the ball right now.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Trade. That's the
voice of Mark Dominic. Of course, he's a foreign general
manager of the Tampay Buccaneers and a long time front
office guy in the NFL for twenty years of scouting
in front office service. Bryce Young is going to get
another start. Did he earn it? Which guy?
Speaker 10 (42:02):
Which guy? I'm sorry?
Speaker 1 (42:03):
Bryce Young?
Speaker 10 (42:05):
Oh? Yes, absolutely, I mean I think at this point
start of the I think at this point Bryce Young
should be the starter no matter what. I don't think
there's any reason why you would absolutely make any adjustment
there at all, because you just might as well find
out the season is lost. It's not going to help
you to go get Andy Dalton, and the one thing
you don't want to do is get rid of a
young quarterback and just let him keep growing. And maybe
there's enough there to sit there and say, let's see.
(42:26):
And at the same point, you've already given him the
massive signing bonus. There's no reason not to take him
the camp. Even if you draft a quarterback in the
first round, I would take him to camp and say,
let's go compete. You've taken the hit, you've got the contract,
it's guaranteed. There's no real reason to get rid of them.
So it's play him. Let him go out there, take
his lumps. If it's bad restless season, your team's gonna
be in position with that first round pick that they
(42:46):
have that still go do something. If you don't plan,
then you really don't have the equation answered and you're
really not going in here with your franchise. So I
think you absolutely plan, and I think you played the
rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
Where are you on pitchper and Russell Wilson. How solid
do you think he is as their number one quarterback?
Speaker 10 (43:07):
Well, I feel really good with you know, with Russell,
I think again, I think you see him push the ball.
I think that they can attack you anywhere on the
football field. And I think that that's the difference with
Russell versus you know, obviously Justin fields and what he
can do from an athletics standpoint, but you know, and
Justin has a good had a good run. But I
just think Russell brings more dynamic play to him, uh
(43:28):
meaning allowing receivers to make more plays, bigger plays. And
I think that's the real difference that I see, uh
Inn Russell, Wilson. And I think now with Mike Williams there,
I think that's gonna be another nice piece that I
know that Mike was not playing very well or not
getting a lot of opportunities at the Jets, but I
like to move to the Pittsburgh Steelers. You know, that's
what you've seen throughout the league. Receivers are getting traded
for peanuts right now. And that's great for the receivers
(43:50):
and for the clubs that are looking to shop because
you know, in in March January, you know, March April May,
no one wants to give a draft pick to save
their life. Right now, you know, you're being able to
just give up fourths or fifth or sixth round picks
for most of these receivers. That's a great deal. And
I think that the you know, clubs that are taking
advantage of where the market is in terms of who's
willing to trade a receiver are clubs that are really
(44:12):
putting themselves in a good position. I think that's why
we've seen so many trades. Specifically at that position.
Speaker 1 (44:18):
Bills have won four in a row. Obviously, the two
losses were Texans in the road, a close one than Ravens.
A lot of talk about Josh Allen potentially being an MVP.
The big thing is that the change in the amount
of turnovers that they have. What's Buffalo done to help
Josh Allen get to a place where he's playing so well?
Speaker 10 (44:38):
Well, I just think it's Josh Allen making the better decisions.
And you're right, I mean, the turnover margin is astronomical
compared to last year. I mean that's really the reason
why the Buffalo Bills, I think, instead of being eleven
to sixth last year, while they're seven and two, Josh Allen,
as you know, seventeen or eighteen touchdown or excuse me
interceptions last year and he's got two this year. I mean,
that's the story. And he's not getting sacked either. He's
only got eleven sacks in the season. So the offensive
(45:01):
line's playing good. The thing that's really kind of making
a difference for them is they've gotten Concaid and Knox.
Even though Knox only has eight or nine catches, They've
got the two tight ends up that they can do.
Shake here has been able to step up and play
a role, and I have a feeling the fond Diggs
not being around has helped this organization too. Now we
just got to see if a Mark Cooper can get
healthy get on the field, because I think that's going
(45:22):
to be the secret soft towards the second half of
the season for the team.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
Mark Gray Stephans always man, have yourself an awesome, awesome weekend.
Let's watch some football. We'll talk about it next week.
Speaker 10 (45:32):
Okay, sounds good. Doug enjoying the weekend.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
But that's my guy. Mark Dominic join us here on
The Doug Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Just a
unbelievable resource for us in terms of what people really
think or should be seeing in the NFL.
Speaker 7 (45:46):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
