Speaker 2 (00:19):
I thought Robert Morris was maybe gonna do it Aaron
Torres a two fifteen. I don't know if it's a scare,
but they gave Alabama everything they could ask for and more. Today.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Well, I'll tell you this. We were on air in
this spot yesterday. If we're gonna if we're gonna criticize
Auburn for winning by twenty, I think we probably got it.
As a one seed. We probably got to criticize Alabama
winning by nine. By the way, I want to come
in with a super hot take off the top. They
just showed a Robert Morris cheerleader crying. I think everybody,

(00:52):
it's twenty twenty five. You're allowed to express your emotions
however you want. Weren't you like a thirty eight point underdog,
Like is this some shock result that you just couldn't
see coming.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
That is the emotions, so inconsiderate. Don't cry that it's over.
Smile because it happens. That's what I'm saying. Yes, you
made the big dance.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Wouldn't it have been incredible if you had beaten Alabama? Yes,
but don't act like this is like the most stunning
result that has ever happened in.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
The And I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I feel bad now now I'm just being mean off
the top. And I'm not a mean guy.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
So I think that CBS, t n T, TBS, True
TV have someone designated to find criers in the crowd,
no doubt, There is no doubt whenever that happens. By
the way, here comes Nato. He talks out the side
of his mouth a lot. He's a Wisconsin guy, but
not a lot of people talk like this from Wisconsin.

(01:45):
He does it. He does it though he does.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
By the way, not only are they not only are
the the CBS and Turner camera people on top of
the criers.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
H I'll give him credit.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
They're they're on top of and this is gonna sound
where they're on top of the why and families. I've
been watching college basketball for a very long time, certainly
since Bill self has been the head coach at Kansas.
I don't think I've ever seen his wife until last night. Also,
Sean Miller, I had never seen his wife until the
first four game against Texas. So you know the you know,

(02:19):
the cameraman, the camera woman is on top of everything.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
They don't miss the thing. What about nat Oats's wife?
I have ever seen my wife in the stands. I know
this doesn't work on radio because again I'm side talking
out of my mouth, but I don't even know if
it sounds remotely close to NATO's does Maybe we could
get some Natoat's postgame and we can oh compare mine.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Is this like when everyone tried to do the Andrew
Luck impressions back of the day? Are you the first
Natotes impression? Are you the real start?

Speaker 2 (02:45):
No?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
I like it because as a college basketball junkie, I
know what you're talking about. I don't know how much
of America does, but I think I thought it was
actually very on point.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
We are broadcasting live for the tyreq dot com studios.
Tyreq dot com will help you get there an unmetch selection,
fast free shipping, free road as protection in over ten
thousand recommended installers tirec dot com the way tire buying
should be. We're gonna have more turny talk. We're gonna
discuss what happened last night coming up in about fifteen minutes,
because there were some happenings in the NCAA tournament that

(03:14):
you may have missed. Plus we're gonna take Friday's action
some good So far, Mississippi State and Baylor played a
good one. We just told you Alabama got all they
could handle. We'll see if Colorado State can save the
face of the Mountain West Conference. A lot to get
to New Mexico. Playing Marquette today as an opportunity to
do that as well. But all that's coming up later
on the show. But we must start. We must start

(03:36):
with the seventeen point effort that rocked the world, the
NBA's world, as Bronnie James has seventeen points off the
bench to lead the Lakers to a twenty nine point
loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. That's what happened last night
in the NBA. The Lakers didn't have lebron James, they

(03:57):
didn't have Luka Doncic, they didn't have Offton Reeves. It
was a throwaway game. The Bucks didn't have Damian Lillard.
But the story is Bronnie James scoring seventeen points coming
off the bench, playing thirty minutes for the Lakers in
a one to eighteen eighty nine loss to Milwaukee.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
So listen, it's gonna make me sound like the uh,
the ultimate hater. I don't hate Bronnie. I wish him
nothing but luck. But you know what this means, Dan Bayer?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yes, what does it mean?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Absolutely nothing? Okay, So here's about the mine. There's a
funny thing in the NBA called injuries. And when injuries happen,
by default, someone has to play. And when someone plays,
by default, someone has to put up stats. Right Like,
by the way, we've always heard of the good stats,

(04:49):
bad team guy, the Jordan Poole's maybe, you know, dropping
twenty eight for the Washington Wizards, and it means nothing.
You look at the NBA. It is and beyond the NBA,
it is littered with below average players that because they
have to play because of injuries, they put up stats

(05:09):
because somebody has to put the ball in the basket.
I don't want to be a hater, it's just a fact.
I remember it was funny. For some reason this popped
into my head. But there is a player named Matthew Hurt.
Are you familiar with Matthew Hurt? Are you familiar with
his game?

Speaker 2 (05:25):
I pride myself on basketball, but it was unfamiliar to me.
It hurt me to not know his name. Okay, so
Matthew Hurt. I remember sitting here last year in this studio.
It was on a Sunday. I believe I was filling
in with Mark Willard. He played for the Memphis Grizzlies,
and it was the end of the year. If you remember,
you know, John Moran obviously has the awful knee injury.

(05:45):
He's out.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Then you have a bunch of other injuries by the
end of the year. Let's just say that they're not
playing the cream of the lost cause. Yeah, lost cause
went back and looked it up because I seem to
remember this. Matthew Hurt dropped thirty points in a game
for the fitz Grizzlies last year. Let me ask you this,
do you think he got a max extension out of that?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Probably not? Did not?

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Do you think Let me ask you this, how many
thirty point games do you think he's had since that?
This season. In the endb I would probably say zero. Well,
how about I'll take it a step further. He's played
zero NBA games this year, although I did see on
his Instagram that he's having a very good season in
the Australian Basketball League the ABL or it's the NBL,

(06:27):
Actually it's the National Basketball League in Australia, where he's
playing for the Southeast Melbourne Phoenix. Okay, this is a
guy who scored thirty points a year ago. Nobody cared,
nobody made it a big deal. He was playing on
a bad, injury riddle team and someone had to put
the ball in the basket. And so I'm sorry if
Bronni does this consistently.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
If it's Game.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Six of the Western Conference Finals against the Nuggets and
Luca's passing the ball to him like he's Ray Allen
for the Miami Heat and he's hitting the game winner
to send him in the finals, I will change the take.
But a random dude going off for a random number
of points on a random night for an injury filled
team does not move the needle in the Torus household.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
How about that? Do you think, first of all, do
you feel bad in saying anything that you said over
the last couple of minutes. Is there any point where
you feel bad about it?

Speaker 3 (07:19):
I don't know, And do you want me to take
half a second to explain, yes, I'd love to. There
is a part of me, actually I don't feel bad
about what I said. What I do feel bad about
is that it is hard for me to separate how
Bronnie got into the NBA versus what he will do

(07:40):
going forward now as an NBA player. In other words,
it's not that I dislike that his father, like so
many fathers, took an opportunity to help his son advance
his professional career, but it is still hard for me
to take him seriously as an NBA player, which is
why I made the reference to Rayal And if he's
doing this later in the season, NBA playoffs next season,

(08:01):
two years from now, three years from now on a
consistent basis, that's fine. But I still have that in
my head though. Whatever it was two point eight points
per game at USC last year, that would not have
been drafted if his name was anything other than Bronnie James.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
I'm gonna say I feel bad for what I'm about
to say because I do think that if you score
seventeen points in an NBA game, whether it comes in
late season action with the Memphis Grizzlies or it comes
with the Los Angeles Lakers when none of their top
three players are starring, I think it's that's something to
be applauded now. It happens all the time in the NBA,

(08:36):
if you will to your point, there are other players
on the Lakers. Gave Vincent's been in the NBA for
a while. The Dalton Cannex scored seventeen. He was the
first round pick, did so on less efficient shooting than
Bronni had last night. I feel bad because I feel
like we're raining on Bronni's parade when he's taking these

(08:58):
baby steps, and these baby steps now have gotten to
the point I will admit I never thought that Bronnie
James would score seventeen points in an NBA game when
he was drafted in the second round of the draft.
And that's where I feel a little bit guilty. Yeah,
and I feel guilty about it as well, But I
also look at this scenario of it's never been about
Bronnie James. Yes, and that's why this is so This

(09:23):
is so darn difficult to deal with because I don't
want to hate on Bronnie James. By every account of
any interaction with Bronnie James, including the Athletic article that
was written this week by Joe Varden, I think Bronnie
James comes off as a great kid, an absolute great kid.

(09:43):
It's the situation that he was put in that I
can't get passed. Now, at some point, Aaron, you and
I are gonna have to get past this. Agree. Part
of it's a meat problem, yes, And it's just there's
gonna be a point where we have to just look
at Bronnie James and say, alright, he's an NBA player.
That's how we're gonna look at him. But it was
so difficult for me to accept what happened last night,

(10:06):
on the night that it happened, because it happened on
a night that was the first round of the NCAA tournament.
And if Bronnie James could develop his game to the
effect where he can score seventeen points in an NBA game,
what could he have done another year at USC or
at Duquane or somewhere else where he maybe could have

(10:27):
transferred and had success and led that team maybe to
an NC doublea tournament game, had twenty seven points in
a first round tournament game, leading that school to victory.
If that happens, if that happens last night, instead of
you and me and others picking apart Bronnie's performance, we
are lifting Bronnie up on our shoulders and we are

(10:50):
talking about what a great atmosphere it was in the
arena that he was in, the star that he is.
That's the disappointing thing for me, which goes all the
way back to the decision to have Bronnie James enter
the NBA Draft when he wasn't ready. Now, at some
point you and I will have to get over this,
and other people are going to have to get over this.

(11:12):
It's just not going to happen when we're watching first
round games in players that I honestly think Bronnie James
is capable of playing with and doing what he did
and if he can make that progress that he did
this season with the Lakers, and maybe the G League
has allowed him to do that, and you wouldn't do
that in a college program, but I think there would
be growth. Who knows if Bronnie's biggest growth as a

(11:32):
player came from last summer to now like that could
have been the opportunity for him to flourish. And if
you stay in school, which by the way, greatest time
of anyone's life by and large. For anybody that has
gone to college and you asked them, what's the best
time in your life? A lot of times hear you
know what, my college years. I would do anything to
have those years back. Sure we love our childhood, but

(11:55):
you're missing out on the experience. You're missing out about
doing that stuff. And I don't expect people to say
that you really care about Bronnie James's experience. No, it
just goes back to the decision that is unlike any
other where you have Bronnie James put in a spot
where a team is forced to draft him and then
carry him along in his career. And that's the problem

(12:16):
that I have. I felt like last night would have
been an amazing night or tonight where Bronnie James is
starring in the NCAA anally. It's a great analogy.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
No, it's an amazing analogy, and it would have felt
good because what is the word or what I don't
know what words you've used to describe the Bronnie James
experience so far. By the way, Cooper Flag just scored
his first NCAA tournament basket as well, so he is
on the floor and playing and looks pretty close to
one hundred percent. But with Bronnie, I don't know what

(12:45):
the word that you've used, but I know on our
show on Saturday, the word that I keep falling back
to is it's not organic. It didn't happen naturally. It
didn't happen because Bronnie James was one of the fifty
eight or sixty or whatever it was best draft eligible player,
and everybody felt like this, and everybody felt like that,
and then oh, he gets to training camp and he
earns his spot and he gets put in the rotation,

(13:06):
and you feel, no, we know why it happened. And again,
I actually don't have a problem with a father doing that.
I have a problem with us pretending like people did
anything that bron Lebron did anything other than what he did,
which was completely manipulate the situation in his in his
son's favor.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
But if Bronni was still there, can I interest just
because it's manipulating the situation in Lebron's favor, Because that's
that's I think they run away. We still look at that.
It's bron well not in his That's my whole deal
is I don't think that this was the best deal
for Bronni. I think that's fair, right, and so I
think this was done for Lebron, so like this was

(13:49):
done for Lebron's favorite. Like so Dion Sanders says, and
you know is said throughout the process told Dan Patrick this,
I believe at the Super Bowl that there are some
teams they don't want Shoudorge Sanders to go to. I
get it. I if my son was an NFL prospect,
there are definitely organizations I would not want him to
go to can. I it's just different when it's positioned

(14:10):
in a way to Shanor Sanders is ready for the NFL.
He's going to be a top five, top ten pick.
I just if I'm Dion, yeah, I'm saying, Okay, I
don't like that organization. I don't like what the Jets
are doing. I do like their ownership. Maybe I don't
want to go there. I have zero problem with that.
You're trying to use what you've accomplished in a way
and your your son's accomplishments to put him in a

(14:31):
right spot, saying my son's only going to play for
the Sons and Lakers as the fifty seventh pick. Here, Yeah,
puts puts it in, puts it in a whole different perspective.
I understand if you're like, I don't want them to
go to the Wizards because nothing's happening there. I don't
want them to go to Charlotte. I don't trust what
they've got. I could totally understand that, but they did
it differently. They said he can only play for the
Lakers and Sons, and that's something I had a problem with.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
Well, and he only they said he can only play
for the Lakers or Sons because they wanted it to
look like it wasn't a done deal.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
With the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
The analogy that I actually use, Dan, which I think
you'll appreciate because people say all the time, is well,
I mean, it's not a big deal that Giannis has
got his brother on the team, you know, Thanasas. And
my argument is okay, but what is the We openly
acknowledge that Fanasas is a punchline. We openly acknowledge that
he's a human victory scar we don't try to make

(15:21):
it out as though Fanastas is one of the four
what is it, four hundred and fifty best players thirty
times fifteen spots for nobody is claiming that Gianni's brother
is one of the four hundred and fifty best players
when he has been on the bucks. It's just that
it's what the superstar wants, it's what the superstar gets.
But it's kind of a running joke every time that

(15:42):
he steps on the floor. And so to treat Bronnie
as he's something other than that. And I know we're
getting off the topic of the NCAA tournament, which I
want to get back to, but like to treat Bronnie
anything other than that, That's that's always been the frustrating
part to me, is if we just had acknowledged from
two weeks before the draft on has out of a
lebron deal. He wants to play with this kid, not

(16:02):
one of the four hundred and fifty best players. But
we've had to like we've been force fed Hey, no,
I mean, you know he had he had that heart problem,
Well what what do you bet?

Speaker 4 (16:11):
You know?

Speaker 2 (16:11):
You gotta give him a chance.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
And it's like that's the whole part that rubs me
the wrong way, and I think it rubs a lot
of the public the wrong way too.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
It is at some point we will we will get
over it. And I don't want to hate on Bronni
James like that's the that's the other part of it,
and that's why I just don't I don't feel that
I am like I think it's I actually think it's
kind of neat that he did have seventeen points because
I never would have thought that, as I mentioned earlier,
if we were talking about this last June, I thought
that it was going to be a first week of
the season thing for Lebron to get his father's son moment,

(16:38):
and that was that the guaranteed contract was something else.
I mean, that was completely different. You're not seeing that
that stuff that we can pile pile on with. I
just look at last night, the moment that was that
was lost. Instead of scoring twenty seven in an NCAA
tournament game, he scored seventeen and a twenty eight, twenty
nine point loss, you know, in a meaningless NBA game

(17:01):
where four of the top players in the league aren't playing.
And while I think that his progress should be commended
for what he's done in the G League. To me,
it's really never been about Bronny. It's always been about
Bron and Lebron. And that's why Lebron's response to all
of this and why I think people like Steven A
and why people like Doug say this stuff is I

(17:22):
really don't think that they have anything against Bronnie don't.
I know I don't, and you know the don't as well.
It's just, man, if this decision isn't made, what a
moment it would have been for him last night. If
if he does go to Dukane and leads them to
the NCAA tournament, they have a better season than what
they have, it would have been pretty amazing.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
No, And to get back to that point for half
a second is like, like you said, Duque, what is
the tie?

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Exactly? It's Lebron's high school teammate.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
See even I'm not even totally but I know the reference,
and I know that there's family ties to Ducane, So
perfect example, a ten at large team whatever or maybe
they got to get through the conference tournament and he
has a good conference tournament and you're watching him on
Sunday and you're like, oh, I haven't paid attention to
Brown as much this year. He's actually getting better. And
then oh he drops twenty nine as an eleven seed

(18:08):
and they beat you know, VCU played BYU. They beat BYU.
It's like, oh my, and it's an incredible story. And
again it goes back to the authenticity. Well now I
can't even remember the original word that I used the
but the authenticity of that moment of man. He went
through some real struggles at USC, he had the heart condition.
You feel awful, he had to leave, there was a
coaching change, and now he's doing it at Ducaine. This

(18:31):
is the best story we've ever seen in the tournament.
Instead of all the caveats that we've included in this
segment of and I'm not saying you did it right,
it's just the fact of, well, there's a bunch of
guys injured. And I know I said it. You know,
good play bad bad players put are you know bad
being relative? You know, non NBA players, G League caliber

(18:51):
players put up big individual nights in the NBA all
the time. And I'm just with you as I think
this would have been an incredible moment if Lebron had
let this all play out organically.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
That was the word I was looking for, is organic,
and that obviously did not. Yeah, instead of seventeen in
the NBA last night in I don't want to say
meaningless because it's two playoff teams, but with the amount
of stars that weren't there a meaningless NBA game? You
should have been having twenty seven in the Big Dance.
He's erin Torres. I'm Dan Byer. We are in for
Doug Gottlieb today. If I Aaron at Aaron Underscore Torris,

we are live from the tierraq dot com studios.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
This is the best of the Done dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
Monzi just told you that Duke is up big at
the half against Mount Saint Mary's. The question is should
Cooper flag play in the second half? That and so
much more as we are broadcasting live from the tierraq

talk coming up in twenty minutes, including that Cooper flag discussion.
We will give you a score update as that Colorado
State Memphis game winds down. And I feel there is
another the twelve seeds this year. You see San Diego, McNeice,

(20:19):
Colorado State, Liberty's the twelve seed in the East Region.
They've got Oregon later on today. But the twelve seeds
in that five to twelve matchup are always ripe for
the pickings. But like, this is a bracket where you
maybe could have picked three twelve seeds and felt very
comfortable with it.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
Well, Colorado State was actually a favorite coming into this game.
Memphis point guard got hurt. I know we're gonna talk
about some of these games going on, so I don't
want to overset, you know, we don't have to talk
about it here. But yeah, I mean, and then McNee
You know, listen, Will Wade's an accomplished coach all that.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
So what was the third one? Oregon in Liberty was
the third winner? Well, you see San Diego. I think
it was also a great call.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
Yeah, I think Michigan ended up as a two and
a half point favorite. I mean, if you just look
at the seed line, a five seed is what about
the sixteenth to twentieth best team, let alone that Michigan
was probably a little bit better by the end of
the Big Ten tournament. Obviously, a twelve seed is in
theory one of what the bottom twenty or so teams
in the tournament, and Michigan was a two and a
half point favorite. I think that kind of tells you

(21:20):
a little bit of what you need.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
What I think happened is people probably picked three twelve
seeds and then saw Oregon and Liberty, and no disrespect
to Liberty, who could knock off the Ducks. But they're like, well,
I have to pick at least one five seeds. So
they're ending up picking Oregon today over Liberty. But we
shall see. That's where we are in the five to
twelve matchup. I also think this the committee focuses so
much on the top and then the bottom of the

(21:42):
bracket that sometimes it's difficult to tell on who is what.
So when you're seeing the five seeds, I saw a
lot of data saying the eights were actually better than
the fives this year. It's tough sometimes to set up
the bracket because I don't think as much attention is
put on those things.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
It's a great point. And then up a couple good
points on our selection shows. First of all, there was
a ton of SEC teams that were kind of grouped,
not only in that one two seed line, but really
like that six to eight, six to nine seed line
where it's like Vandy, Oklahoma, Missouri, Mississippi State, Ole miss
It's just like, how do you bunch them all? And

(22:19):
they can't all be on the sete, and so that
makes it complicated. I think just the other thing too,
And I don't remember if we talked about this on Sunday,
but the committee now has so many metrics, like it's
good to be informed, but at some points you can
have too much data where it's like, you know, like listen,
I don't think North Carolina should have been in, but

(22:40):
if you look at the right metrics, you could absolutely
argue that they should have been in over West Virginia,
over whoever. And so I just bring it up because
I do think in some cases the committee might literally
have too much information and it could be to their
own detriment.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
You could talk yourself into anything with a bracket as well,
and I think that tells you of when you're trying
to fill out your brackets and looking for your up
sets that you can find any data point that will
make you want to lean one way or the other.
And yeah, that's what we get. That's what you get
when you have sometimes too much information. I do want
to let you know Aerin that you're listening to us now.

(23:13):
But did you know that you could also see us?
Did you know that I did? Yes, Yeah, I see

Aaron Rodgers, there would be a whole gauntlet of Aaron

(23:35):
Rodgers videos. And Aaron Rodgers is in the news today
because the free aging quarterback is visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers
a conversation with Mike Tomlin conversation with gm Omar Khan.
But Gary Dolak of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that
the meeting took place with Rogers being at the facility,
then added a note to it that a contract was

(23:58):
not imminent or following the meeting, but that Aaron Rodgers
was in Pittsburgh and he is now. As you heard
Bonci saysin's left that meeting. I don't want to say
it's interesting timing, but obviously Aaron Rodgers got word from
the Minnesota Vikings, and so it falls in line that
he was waiting on what the Vikings were hearing before
moving forward, and now he's moved forward to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
Yeah, I'm still you know, listen, I know at some
point it becomes exhausting just talking about the same guy.
And we obviously heard the Cam Hayward comments about if
you want to be a Steeler it's time like put
up or shut up basically, But I also do think
I think they are actually like depending on if and
where he ends up, I actually do think there are
a lot of interesting conversations to be had if it's

(24:44):
in Pittsburgh defensive culture.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
But they always win games.

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Now they have DK Metcalf George, but you know, there's
a lot of variables there. It does feel like the
giant stuff is fading. You reference the fact that Devido
is the only quarterback on that roster, and so yeah,
I think once we actually get an answer to if
he's playing where he's been before we get to some
of the other stuff. Let me just ask you a question,
because I brought this up on my Saturday show. Do

(25:08):
you think Aaron Rodgers should just basically just sit out
and wait for somebody to get hurt? Like I don't
mean to be crass, but a starting quarterback, let alone
many of them will get injured. Do you think there's
like he should just sit there and wait and then
maybe a better option would actually present itself in week three,

(25:29):
Week four, week five.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
I do think that there has to be some ramp
up to it. And I think that Aaron Rodgers, if
he's not playing football, is going to go and do
Aaron Rodgers things. So instead of we laugh at Joe
Flacco just sitting on the couch not doing anything, I
think Joe Flacco is at least keeping himself in shape
and was in the continental United States. But it's the truth. No,

(25:53):
it is the truth. Like, if you need a quarterback
and Aaron Rodgers has been, you know, halfway around the
world on a three week excurre, how ready is he
to wait for another job? That would be the only
thing that I would say that would be against that
line of thinking, because I do think that it could fit.
I just think if Rogers knows he's not going to
play football, then he's going to go and do something else.

(26:14):
He doesn't seem like someone is just going to sit
by idally and not do anything, which has made this
situation kind of unique, and that they were waiting on
word from the Vikings, all of which is completely panned out.
It's completely true. The Athletic did a piece in talking
about the Vikings thinking of things and how it came
to be that they decided to not pursue Aaron Rodgers

(26:35):
because they like JJ McCarthy. Yet in the same piece
they also say Daniel Jones they tried to pitch him
coming to Minnesota to compete for the starting job. Well,
that does then say that you aren't as sold on
JJ McCarthy, And I think that's been the biggest takeaway
that if it took this long house old are you
on McCarthy. But what I find interesting in this Rogers

(26:56):
visit with the Steelers is if the Steelers did want
a qu quarterback, they could bring Russell Wilson back. Yeah,
but it's been he is. It's why I think it's
over for Russell Wilson in that one of the quarterbacks
has now gone with the New York Jets. That's justin Fields,
but Russell Wilson is still available. I don't think that

(27:18):
things went as swimming lee how they ended at the
end of the year, I know is not good, but
there seemed to be some disconnect with Russell Wilson and
maybe the offense. But if the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to
wrap up their quarterback situation, they could just say, hey, Russ,
we're gonna run it back, and I think that he
would say yes and be back and all would be good.
But instead, a franchise that is rooted in NFL history

(27:42):
is just sitting there playing the waiting game and has
no problems being the second choice of one Aaron Rodgers,
And I think that says a lot about Russell Wilson.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Well, I was gonna say, I know this is more
of an Aaron Rodgers segment than Russell Wilson's segment, But
I find that last point that you made about Aaron
Rodgers fascinating, or Russell Wilson saying because of the idea
that you know, it's not only that they weren't terrible
when he played, but remember this was Mike Tomlin's handpicked
guy and beyond that, And I know we talked about

(28:11):
this as we filled in over the last couple of days.
But like you know, Tomlin, they're winning with Justin Fields,
they go to Russell Wilson. Tomlin has the famous quote
of yeah, that's why I'm very well compensated. And it's
like it just felt like that relationship was there and
that maybe, you know, because the conversation is like, Russell

(28:32):
Wilson can't relate to his teammates, but he was clearly
for a while there relating to his coach. And so
I don't know if something happened in that relationship or
more realistically, Mike Tomlin just realized he's not the guy.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
But I think that.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
Speaks to the Russell Wilson part of this is like, oh,
it's actually over for him because the dude who put
all of his eggs in the Russell Wilson basket has
now turned on him.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Not a great sign for Ross only on him back.
I was watching I was watching Survivor. We watched it
last night. It was from Wednesday's episode. This is no spoiler,
but there's this guy on there. That guy is shredded.
He's a stunt guy puts on a show. Anybody here
watched Survivor. I don't know Bow's taking over for Jason.

(29:18):
Jason edd leave early Iowa. Sam. I don't think Monci
watches it because she's usually here at Fox Sports Radio
on Wednesday Night's. The point is, is this guy is
you know, you would think he's the apple of some
lady's eye. Sure, he's a stunt man that doesn't make
a lot of money, that is living in a trailer
in front of his dad's house. He's opened this up.

(29:41):
He may be a little extra, like adding it on.
But he said on the episode, he said that his
girlfriend broke up with him because of money issues and
that his goal is to win Survivor and when he does,
he's going to go and propose to her. Because oh no, yes,
that is exactly the reaction that I think so many
of us had. Sure that, Okay, maybe the money issues

(30:01):
are solved, but that is not the problem. And I
think that's like if Russell Wilson goes back to the Steelers,
it's the same thing of like going back of this
team has basically told you they had a front row
look at you for an entire season, and they would
rather take someone who's been a problem in the locker room,

(30:21):
who's going to be four it was in his forties
and is still coming off of an achilles injury that
you're not necessarily sarily sure if he does want a
play or not. They're choosing to go down that road
then to still be in a relationship with you, and
that's that's the running on the wall. Now, maybe the
Giants don't draft Shad or Sanders like I think that
they will, and maybe Russell Wilson is the guy. But

(30:45):
with Aaron Rodgers doing this with the Pittsburgh Steelers, I
think says that everything about Russell Wilson. I don't think
it would be a bad landing spot for Rogers. I
think it would. I think it could be fun. I
think it would be unique. Honestly, it's never I never
thought that we would see this see that scenario. But
to me, it's more of the other domino effects that
have happened that makes this Rogers story so interesting today. No,

(31:06):
there's no doubt.

Speaker 3 (31:08):
And by the way, what do you think this says
about JJ McCarthy, because yeah, Aaron Rodgers might not be
a factor, but they're still kind of lukewarm. I'm just
you know what, You're a Wisconsin guy. You grew up
in Wisconsin. I mean, obviously think about the NFC North
a lot of me.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
Sure, well, I would say this in knowing what. This
is My problem if I'm a Vikings fan is I
don't know what my team wants. My team thinks that
they're good enough to win a Super Bowl, that sort
of think, because that's why you talk to Aaron Rodgers
or you think about Aaron Rodgers. But the whole reason
that you drafted JJ McCarthy is for the future. And

(31:46):
I think they can't decide and I don't think that
they are stuck on JJ McCarthy as the starter with
the obvious flirtation of Rogers. Listen, Aaron Rodgers is not
going to Minnesota to be the backup to JJ McCarthy.
It is not going to be a competition. I'm sorry,
that's not going to happen. Aaron Rodgers is going to
either start or he's not going to play in twenty
twenty five, or to your point, he's not going to

(32:07):
play and maybe he'll join a team later, but it
is the status of JJ McCarthy, and I think a
lot of people have felt that this flirtation was an
indictment on McCarthy, and in a recent piece in The
Athletic and talking about why the Vikings did this and
why they settled on keeping JJ McCarthy as their QB
one and not pursuing Rogers. Within that piece, they had

(32:28):
talked to Daniel Jones and pitched him on an open
quarterback competition. This with Daniel Jones in an open competition,
Now he's got his own open competition in Indianapolis to
deal with, but he felt that that was a better option.
So I don't know where. I don't know what Minnesota
thinks they are right now. I think they know they
have a pretty good team, but they're trying to wigh

(32:50):
do we sacrifice it, do we not have the quarterback?
Do we go out and get someone? Do we stick
with our quarterback that we think is going to be
a long term And if I'm a Vikings fan, that
worries me because right now it doesn't seem like leadership
knows necessarily where they want to go. When they're playing
a pretty good hand. When you Brian Flores was not
a head coach in the NFL, so he's not going
to come back and run your defense again. They've added

(33:12):
pieces in the offseason. Aaron Jones is now coming back.
They've tried to upgrade the offensive line. Your only question
now is at quarterback, and they're trying to wig of
like what do we want? Do we That would be
the thing that would worry me if I'm a Vikings fan. No,
and you forget too. With McCarthy, it wasn't only the
knee injury. They had complications from the knee injury, and
then he had to have a second surgery, And so

(33:32):
I'm sure some of it is development.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
Is he good enough? You know, it's easy to forget
this now. There were plenty of questions going into the
draft about McCarthy and how much was actually put on
his plate at Michigan and this and that, and so
to just see kind of all these variables get go,
you know, kind of in and around. It's it's just
interesting to see how how all this comes out.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Well, if he's always hurt, how can he develop? Sure? Right,
So the point of his progression would be much different
entering year two than someone who really got to sit
and watch and learn yet was fully healthy in that year.
He is not being able to do that, and you
needed him, You needed him to you actually needed him
to progress physically, Yes, because of and we think that

(34:14):
he has the physical tools. But you know the NFL.
I love the clip from Tom Brady and talking about
the tuck rule and he says that I was a
young quarterback at the time and playing in that game
was actually awesome because everything slowed down for me. Now,
after twenty years in the NFL and seven Super Bowls,
everything was slow motion anyway. But he said, early in
my career, everything was so fast. And so here's JJ McCarthy,

(34:37):
as you're saying, gets limited stuff at Michigan to what
he can do. Maybe he can throw the ball and
has the strong arm to throw at sixty seventy yards downfield,
but how much Now, how fast is the game for
you when you haven't been able to really get reps
because you've been injured the whole time. Now that's a
legitimate issue.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
Well, and I know we did when we did a
we did Dibbs last last hour. We're talking about a
little about Shador. But it is interesting because what there's
about what five guys for about five spots still with Tennessee, Cleveland,
the Giants. You know, we think the Vikings are obviously
rolling with JJ McCarthy, but how good do you feel?

(35:15):
It's just it's interesting that a lot of the dust
is settled. Darnold to the Seahawks, Daniel Jones part of
the competition in Indie, but Gino Smith to the Vegas Raiders.
But a lot of it still isn't settled here as
we're now, what three weeks from the draft or so.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
He's aeron Torres. I'm Dan Byer about a month April twenty,
fourth first round in the NFL drafts from Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Hit him up at Aaron Underscore Torres. You can find
me at dan Byer on Fox. And another twelve seed
has done it. Colorado State has beaten Memphis seventy eight
to seventy. So the Rams, who were favorite, as you say,

(35:51):
covered in that game. They were two and a half
point favorite. They end up covering and get the win
and now move on to the round of thirty two.
Colorado State will be facing the winner of the Maryland
Grand Canyon game, which will be interesting. Big Ten's at
a good start to the season. To the tournament, we'll
see if Maryland can continue that trend. He is Erons.
I'm Dan Byer in for Doug Gottlieb live from the

(36:13):
tierraq dot com studios. Coming up next, more turny talk.
What top seed could be in trouble tonight in the
round of sixty four. We'll tell you that next year
on Fox.

tournament so far as Ben McNeice against Clemson, and if

(36:58):
you watch Sports Center last night, they said in this
shot put McNeese up twenty two. Final score McNeice with
the upset sixty nine sixty seven. Yeah, Clemson almost made
it all the way back in like seven minutes. If
they had two more minutes, maybe Clemson ends up pulling
the upset. I know Jason Stewart had Clemson in one
of his Survivor pools, so he was following it as well.

(37:21):
I was on my way home as that game was
winding down, trying to get I'm like, no way, is
that a close game? It was nine points and it
was seven points, but it was the upset of the
night mcneie dropping Clemson, and then you had Drake taking
care of Missouri in that six' eleven. Game BUT i

(37:41):
feel like those two schools were popular picks for upsets
when you made your. Bracket they.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
WERE i, mean do we keep the running joke going
from me yesterday about McNee and certain people that we
love saying that nobody was picking them to win BECAUSE
i saw everybody picking them to.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
Win but what we'll, Leave we'll Leave jason mcatyre loan
BECAUSE i love j.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Mac but he did have a tweet about nobody saw this.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
One, yeah, yeah a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
Did by the, way let me ask you this AND
i think we talked about this a little bit, yesterday
but how have you? Enjoyed really two? Things one The
Will Wade Revival, tour but then two The Will Wade
Honesty tour Because i'll tell, you like, LIKE i think
this is so for people who might not, know But

(38:27):
Will wade's the McNeese. Coach and one he got in
trouble for THE ncaa stuff AT. Lsu but he was
asked about talking to THE Nc state, people you, know
his next potential. Job he, said, Yeah i've done. It, yeah,
YEAH i talked to. Him, no, no lie, There, uh
me and my players talk about. It we spend a
day arguing about not you AND i but just people in,
general about is it going to impact the?

Speaker 2 (38:49):
Team doesn't impact the? Team they? Win and then he, said,
well why would it impact our?

Speaker 3 (38:54):
Team it's good for them he and the exact quote
that he used in an interview was they have coaches
in their right now trying to get them to come
to their. School and SO i think THAT i think
it's a little different for you AND i because we
love college sports and we pay so much more. ATTENTION
i think some people are shocked at the honesty of, like,
yeah these guys you, know are my good. Players we're

(39:15):
gonna transfer. Anyway now they just made a little bit more,
money so good for. Them and, oh by the, Way
i'm gonna make more money be in THE nc state
next head coach next, year and some of them are
gonna come with.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
ME i THINK i think That Will wade has got
something that other coaches in the similar positions don't, have
is that it's an obvious. Move and this is not
meant to disrespect McNeice by any, means but it's different
if you're Asking ryan odom are you gonna have you
talked With, virginia it's a Different it's just a different,

(39:44):
Conversation like it's an obvious move For Will wade to be, like,
LOOK i, LIKE i think the honesty has been. GREAT
i just don't think you can do that in every,
Spot like there are head coaching jobs that that you
know inside the business and you know more THAN i,
do but THAT i had heard as well even last
year Of, okay this guy is going to go here
and this one is. Done but you can't say it

(40:05):
because maybe that team's you, know in THE Ncaa, tournament
they're a high mid. MAJOR i think with, McNeice where
they are coming out of The southland one big conference
going to a power school LIKE Nc, STATE i think
there's more. LEEWAY i think it's more like understood in that. Way,
heck When Tobin anderson Upset purdue At, Fairley, dickinson, like

(40:29):
you obviously leave for that job to take THE iona.
Job now he's out of it two years, later but
like there's just some obvious moves that you, make like
you're gonna cast in on, it WHERE i Think Will
wade has that flexibility where other coaches.

Speaker 3 (40:41):
Don't but don't you think, Though BUT i think even
SO i agree with, that AND i think you know there's, examples,
Right like there's rumors that Could mick, cronin THE ucla
coach be trying to look for another, job AND i
have no idea if he has or hasn't talked to.
Anybody but Obviously Mick, cronan HIS ucla, coach would not be, like,
Yeah i'm trying to get the heck out of. HERE
i hate flying across country fifteen times a year playing
in The Big, Ten SO i understand that. Part BUT

(41:03):
i do think AND i think that the transparency maybe
more so about the players of like, yeah like, yeah
that was good for like like why why was it
not a? Distraction because they know if they ball, out
they're gonna get even more money in the portal next
year than they would have if they if they lose that,
game and it's, like you, KNOW i just go.

Speaker 2 (41:25):
Ahead it's easy for a guy to say that when
he's leaving as. Well so like if you had your
players that were balling out and you knew that people
were in their, dms but you were going to stay
at the, SCHOOL i don't think you would love it as.
Much Like Will wade's leaving and he may be taking
those kids TO Nc state with, Him but if you're
there and like like you find out other schools are

(41:47):
in THEIR, DMS i don't know how HAPPY i would
be about. That, Yeah SO i think that the honesty is.
REFRESHING i just think that he's in a unique situation
that allows him to be, honest and that's it's great to.
Hear and it is a new world of college. Basketball
BUT i think we would hear more coaches who are
staying in their spot lament that other schools are in their.

(42:09):
Dms let me give you an.

Speaker 3 (42:10):
Example AND i don't know if this made waves on
The Doug Gottlieb, show but When Dan hurley was on
Sixty minutes the other, day he, mentioned, yeah half my
players already either, enter have already decided to enter the,
portal or are thinking about entering the. Portal AND i
think it was seen as like this super, like oh my,
GOD i don't, KNOW i don't, Know you're Probably you're probably.

(42:32):
Right i'm probably too far in the. Weeds let me
ask you.

Speaker 2 (42:34):
THIS i don't. THINK i don't think it's too far
on the. WEEDS i just think it's the fact that
we think That Danny hurley would just. Reload AND i
think that there are a lot of places where if
you have a good group of, players you don't want
to lose that, group and you could and it's more
difficult to reload at another school as it would be
the two time defending national. Champions.

Speaker 3 (42:55):
YEAH i don't. KNOW i just find that parallel. Interesting
OF i think non college sports people were surprised By
hurley's honesty of to your, point, oh people are gonna
leave the two time defending, Champs it's, like, yeah because
they're not, playing or they want this or they want,
that and Then Will wade's kind of the opposite of, like, yeah.

Speaker 2 (43:13):
No my, guys they're gonna get, paid And i'm happy for.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Him what do you think about just, LIKE i don't,
KNOW i think that his personal arc by the, Way
i'll say, This i'll get a little, nerdy BUT i
think it's. Important when he talked about after the, game
this is so great for the school, whatever blah blah,
blah that part Of louisiana has actually been hit very
hard by. Hurricanes AND i don't know all the, details

(43:37):
BUT i know enrollment is. DOWN i know that population
in that area is. Down SO i thought that was
a cool moment as. Well and we were on air
and you were DRIVING i was driving, Home SO i
don't know how much of it was talked about on the,
broadcast but like you, know we talk about How March
madness run can change a coach's, life a player's, life.
WHATEVER i think it kind of changed that school's. Trajectory

(43:59):
and it's not gonna be you, know it totally. Does, yeah, yeah,
Yeah i'm Not i'm not saying it's gonna be Like,
harvard The harvard of of Of, east you, Know Western
louisiana or. Anything BUT i think it's an important for
that school in that.

Speaker 2 (44:10):
COMMUNITY i just want TO i want to just take a.
Survey then we're gonna go To manzi at the update.
Desk Jason, stewart do you Know? Winthrop do you know
the School? Winthrop the? School, yes, Yes, Iowa, sam you
know Of? Winthrop. Yep the only reason we know Of
winthrop is because of THE ncaa. Tournament oh, no doubt, Right,
well so that's What so that's what McNeese LIKE i
remember when we call the McNeese state like now they're just.

(44:32):
McNeice but like the point is is you make a Run.
Valpo how much run Is valpo gotten from What Bryce
drew did thirty years? Ago? Sure like LIKE gi just of.
That SO i so LIKE i get. THAT i think
that WHILE i think that the comments that he made serves, him,
WELL i don't think that he's. Wrong SO i have

(44:54):
no problem with him saying. That AND i think that
it's to your, point it's uplifting when you're hearing him
talk about enrollment being up and you know with the
five parishes that that are in that that area being
affected and what it's done for the whole. AREA i
think THAT'S i think that's. AWESOME i will tell you.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
WHAT i don't know what is in your TikTok, algorithm
but you know about a lot of, stuff like just
dropping the five parishes like.

Speaker 2 (45:15):
That he mentioned the. Comments, yeah he did say. That he,
said you, know like in our five parish, area this
success has really helped that. Area, OKAY i.

Speaker 3 (45:23):
Didn't know he said that, now because you'll just drop
random things And i'll be, like this guy.

Speaker 2 (45:27):
Knows a lot About i'm an? Idiot is that? THAT i
think it's the.

Speaker 3 (45:30):
OPPOSITE i think you, know you just SAW i Just
i'm a football, Guy i'm a basketball, guy and then
you're dropping five parishes out of. NOWHERE i was, like
you're reading? Encyclopedia is in your free? Time or WHAT
i do?

Speaker 2 (45:40):
Write? JOB i do love. Maps, yes little Does aaron
know that you dropped A Sabrina carpenter lyric on him
in the first ninety seconds of the show and didn't
EVEN i didn't know. THAT i didn't. Know what did
you know, That? MANCI i didn't know? That which one
something about, uh don't tell me the truth or? Something
or what was? IT i? Said don't cry because it's over.

(46:01):
Smiled THAT i, thought but that's a Popular. YEAH i
thought that was just like An instagram. Meme oh that
like thirteen year old. Girls, yeah And sabrina said it.
Too she stole, It, yeah she stole it from some
kitchen In Middle america that has it above their dining.

(46:22):
Table that's the equivalent of the, gap the cat hanging
on a wire and, saying you, know hang in, there hanging. There,
yeah maybe that's the equivalent of. That thank you very,
much monster Our live with THE tirec Dot com. Studio
two things that just want to point out from last night's.
Games number, ONE i think a lot of times we
feel that the higher seeds come in, tight that they

(46:44):
come in, nervous and that they are ripe for an,
upset and sometimes it happens to the lower seeds Like
lipscomb for. Example they just were blown out By Iowa.
STATE i think that they were a team people were looking,
at maybe that could be an. Upset, we'll We'll Iowa,
states you, know don one of their starters could be a.
Possibility Iowa state runs off the, floor just ends up

(47:07):
winning by twenty some points or. Whatever you See San
diego had a lot of expectations AND i think that
they were they were feeling those last night in the
game Against. Michigan, now they had a chance to tie
it at the, end but if they hit any shot
at any point in the first what eight minutes of the,
ballgame we're maybe talking about a different. Ballgame and you,
know kudos To michigan for sticking it out and getting a,

(47:29):
win something that most of The triton's opponents didn't get
this weekend this season when they played You See San,
Diego but we forget. That, yeah if you're a twelve,
seed maybe there are. Expectations like it's a tip of
the captain McNeice for coming out how they, did BECAUSE
i think you See San diego felt for a little
bit that maybe the moment was a little bit too
big at the.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
Beginning that was the exact ONE i was thinking of
when you mentioned. That of you, know we always focus
on the higher seeds potentially struggling, it but you See San,
diego they were just buried and then they were playing
catch up from.

Speaker 2 (47:59):
There, so, yeah lost their best, player fouled, trouble he filed,
out but still had a chance to tie. It at the.
End but in the end The wolverines move on to
