(01:56):
lot like soccer sport of the future women's basketball. People
thought it supported now what really happens or on that
to come, but I thought this was interesting. JJ McCarthy's
been discussed a lot here last offseason when he was
drafted in the first round and this offseason as the
Vikings have allowed Sam Darnold to walk out the door

(02:17):
and go to Seattle and play for the Seahawks. JJ
McCarthy was on upp in Adams. He was asked if
he was told he was the number one starter by
the Vikings. Yet here was his answer.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
We as a fan base or even media found out, like,
you're the guy, the the guy recently, When.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Did you know?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
When did they tell you or when was that message
to you?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
They haven't told, man, I'm happy they didn't because I
try to earn it every single day and I never
want that to be given to me. And it's such
a privileged and opportunity to give that, give me that chance,
and I'm just going to make the most of it
every single day.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, so they haven't, but they have. You know they haven't,
but they have. Right when you select when you have
a guy who's when you have a guy who's a
having a career year, and yet you allow him to
walk out the door for again, I think reasonable money
in Seattle. And also you're telling Aaron Rodgers, a first

(03:15):
ballot future Hall of Famer, we're good at quarterback. You
can say they haven't told you, but they've told you.
Any of us who are married have been married in
relationships will say We'll know that. Women say this all
the time. You know, actions, actions speak louder than words, right,
actions speak louder than words, And when the vikings have

(03:37):
shown is actions and it's look, it has the chance
to be kind of an amazing story in regards to
one coach's ability to slide in any sort of quarterback
kind of and it's interesting it's the Shanahan system. But
previous to Kyle Shanahan being a head coach and having

(03:58):
so much success with different quarter in different spots, Atlanta
went when they went to a Super Bowl, obviously Washington
as as offensive coordinator for his dad, you know, coaching
with his dad, and then you fast forward to since
he's been in San Francisco, multiple quarterbacks and uh career seasons.

(04:20):
What's maybe most interesting is when his dad was the
head coach of the Broncos. I believe it was seven
straight thousand yard seasons from the running back, and I
think every season it was a different guy. That's that, right,
Dan Byer. I'm almost I'm almost positive it was seven
straight thousand yard rushing seasons and I don't remember if

(04:40):
it was in seven different guys.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Is this with with Denver?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, Denver, Yeah, yeah. I mean if you look at
all you have to do is go to stats reference
right on with it with the Denver Broncos.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Yeah, it was like Mike Anderson Orlanda's Gary.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Can you name this is the it's a fun game.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
I don't know, Maybe no, because I don't know, and
I don't even know if the number of seven, but
it was. I think your point was made that it
was just a different guy every year.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah it was. It was Terrell Davis or Landis Gary,
what was Anderson's It was Mike Mike Anderson. Wasn't Mike
Anderson like in the military or something. It was in
the Marines. There you go. And then Terrell Davis again,
and then Clinton Portis and later Ruben Drones as well,

(05:31):
Rubin Drones as well. But it was like it was
a cycle of running backs when you're like really again
and that was I don't remember how many straight years
it was. I just remember it was a different running
back every year. The point of it is that when
you can plug and play just about any running back

(05:52):
and get a thousand yards, or you can get just
about any quarterback and throw for four or five thousand
yards and be more than competent. Like at some point
in time, Yes, you have to find the right quarterback,
but you've also found the right coach. And we've had
so many different analysts on here, and I think, you know,

(06:15):
Jordan Palmer is somebody who's joined us. I know he's
been on the Herd bunch as well. And Jordan's big
thing is like, you have to have confidence, Like so
much of the position is about confidence. And you think
about Sam Darnold when he was with the Jets and
the you know, remember he got hot micd I'm seeing
ghosts to playing as well as he played last year?

(06:36):
It was yeah, did they put him in position to
see and he played well? Sure, But a lot of
it was about his confidence. When you have a team
that just won as many games as the Vikings won
and they let that quarterback walk out the door so
that an unproven quarterback can come in and start that.
If that doesn't give you confidence, I don't know what does.

(06:56):
There's a lot of things it takes to make it
in sports, and by my estimation, the number one thing
it takes is confidence. Now, the confidence has to come
from other people and the work. But also the fit.
They find, they find a guy that fits the style,
and they give you confidence because they clear space by
getting rid of anybody who's any sort of competition. JJ

(07:19):
McCarthy can say, I haven't been told bubkiss about being
a starter and whether or not that was guaranteed. And
yet all you got to do is look around the
locker room go oh, this is my job, and everybody's
everybody simply knows it. Everybody knows it. And I'm sure
that's you know, that's part of why the Steelers haven't

(07:40):
pushed on Aaron Rodgers. It feels like that deal should
have been done a week ago, but it's not yet,
and we guess we're all annoyed. We're all like, dude,
what are we doing? If you want to play football,
just go and play for the Pittsburgh Seriers. They need
a quarterback, you need a place to play. That's a
team you can be competitive at the top of the
and like, what are we actually thinking about here? What

(08:05):
are we actually thinking about? And Aaron Rodgers is not
He doesn't lack confidence or swagger or maybe even to
some people, arrogance, But you also have to maintain you're
not gonna go sign some other quarterback until he decides
because Aaron doesn't want to look over his shoulder. He
doesn't want to He's not going to be a placeholder

(08:25):
for some young quarterback to come and develop and eventually
hand over the rains. If you're going to hire me
as your quarterback, I'm your quarterback, periods, dob. Which is
a reasonable ask. But it's also reasonable for a team
to go like, hey, you kind of gotta let us know,
you know what, are get off the pot. It's a
Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
This is the best of the Done Dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radios.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Our good
friend friend for Scilla from ESPN. He's in Stillwater tonight
for North Texas take on Oklahoma State in the in
the n I T quarterfinals. I believe of the n
I T and Fran, thanks so much for taking time.
I do got to ask you doing the n I
T considering the transfer portal is open. What's the n

(09:15):
T like in comparison to n I t's of the past.

Speaker 5 (09:19):
Well, keep in mind it's an evolving situation, Doug. In
the old days like two years ago or three years ago. Yeah,
the n I T was fun for me and it
still is, by the way. You know, you know me, man,
if there's like twelve scare, if there's twelve squirrels playing
bad pick up basketball in on a playground, I'm going

(09:40):
to be excited about it. But truthfully, you know, no
trip to New York, but you do get to go
to Hinkle. You got the Crown deal with Fox which
is coming up in a week. I think they're offering
prize money the teams that we've done and we're gonna
we're gonna see your former your alma mater at Oklahoma
State play North Texas team tonight. Twenty two new players

(10:04):
since the end of last season that have had to
been integrated to these two teams. And you know, like
Russ Hodge, the coach in North Texas said, he said
to the guys, fellas, your careers are almost over. Just
enjoy playing because you're gonna wish five and ten years
from now that you look back on your career. You

(10:25):
know this because you played and you had such a
good career. But yeah, we're treating it with there's a
lot of fun and I'm sure I would say this
to you, Doug, and you coached this year, that last
month of the regular season for every team at every
level in Division one, the kids are fragile. They don't
know if they're coming back, they don't know if they're
going to get a raise, so they shoot more because
the coach might not renew his nil deal. It's a

(10:49):
crazy time because mentally these kids are a little bit fried.
But we're lucky enough to be around some kids that,
at least from the outside looking in, look like they're
enjoying playing.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yeah care, Yes, it's it's n I T has always been,
you know, until you got to Madison Square gardener. Now
until you get to ankle do you care? If you
don't care, then you usually go home.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
That's right, go home, right, Yeah, no question.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Is Hodge going to be the head coach of North
Texas next year or will he?

Speaker 5 (11:15):
I didn't ask him, Well, I didn't ask him, but
I would put it this way. The last two guys
that left the American Graham McCaslin and Dusty may have
both done pretty good. This guy is an excellent coach.
He's a lot like Grant. I've gotten to know him
through the years. Because he's a Texas guy, and I
think West Virginia could probably do worse than Ross Hodge.

(11:39):
Now I'll say this, I did not get to know
Darian Debries very well. I never got the feeling that
he was going to be their long term. I really didn't.
And what what what made me feel bad about it
is you know, Doug, you have you did you ever
play at West Virginia when you were at Oklahoma State?

Speaker 1 (11:57):
No? No, when I was a Notre Dame. We we
played him, but we only play them at home. They
were in the Big Eastern the game.

Speaker 5 (12:02):
You know what, It's an incredible place because you know, Jordan.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Bowen is my staff. By the way, he played there.

Speaker 5 (12:08):
Obviously of course he did. Yeah. Well, it's not Listen,
it's not Miami Beach, it's not Chicago. It's rural America.
But they love their team, the state. It's the state's
pro team. They have great facilities. Unless you play, unless
you're made to play Tuesday night at nine pm on ESPN.
They usually have great crowds. Big twelve. Whoever gets this

(12:32):
job and embraces the state I think could have a
lot of success. And apparently they have an il money
which as you know right now trumps everything else, you know,
including facilities and all the other stuff.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Yeah, it's so it's funny, like my bracket on Fox
Sports Radio is doing really well. Why I just picked
the teams that had the most money and right, I mean,
this is not that hard to track. And you know,
it's interesting, you know, people acting like mcniee was an upset,
Like not sure it was an upset. Actually, yeah, considering

(13:06):
how well I well funded that that program is okay.
So look, you coached at a bunch of these from
Saint John's, New Mexico to Manhattan, all the different levels. Yep, ye, right,
and now you've covered it for twenty years. What's your
sense of what's your sense of the space that we're in.

Speaker 5 (13:26):
Uh, well, listen, there are the short I talked about
to make it short as possible, obviously, name image and
likeness and the kids partaking in some of the riches
if you will is good, Okay, being able to have
some freedom to transfer if you're in a bad situation

(13:47):
is good. What we have right now is complete and
utter chaos. And for all the people who've been railing
about the NCAA forever, I believe in some way. I
don't know what the unintended consequences are going to be,
but I do think ultimately it's going to be detrimental
for the sport. In this regard Mike football, there'll be

(14:10):
twenty five to maybe a little more fifty high level
basketball programs, and even some of the low level power
conference teams are going to be left by the wayside.
And everything else that's magical about college basketball, March Madness, Cinderella's,
you know, upsets, things of that nature, they're all going
out the window. What we have right now at the

(14:31):
top level of basketball and college is it's basically semi professional.
It's probably more professional than even the G League. And
I know something about the G League since I have
a son coaching there right now, and ily it's bad.
It's yeah, what I.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Tell I turned called it was, it's professional in pay only,
but it's amateur hower in terms of some of the
behind the scenes stuff. Is that fir?

Speaker 5 (14:53):
I agree? Oh yeah, oh yeah, no, we you know,
no question about it. In fact, you know, like one
of my problems is I realized that some of these kids,
you know, if you look at Zion or you know,
Cooper Flag or some of these great college players. If
they hit the nil jackpod, good for them. Okay, but
there was a kid at SMU this year that he

(15:15):
just attended his eighth school in nine years high school
in college. I'm not going to mention his name. You
can look it up right. And he was a good
high mid major player. He had a decent year at SMU.
That kid shouldn't be making exponentially more than some assistant
coach has been doing this for twenty five years. I'm sorry,

(15:36):
he shouldn't be making triple or four times what you know?
What a guy I don't want to hear about. Well,
coaches can leave anytime they want. There's buyouts in your
contract for a reason. In college West Virginia just got
at least three million dollars from Indiana for the buyout.
I'm a believer in a CBA for college basketball and
football players that doesn't make them professionals, but does But

(16:00):
there is a collective bargaining agreement that hopefully we can
all agree on, and you could put buyouts in it.
You can, you could make that guaranteed deals. You know,
because my NBA friends say this. Can you imagine if
the NBA had unlimited free agency every single season.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Yeah, people say all that time. It's just like in
the NBA, like, no, it's not the NBA multi year contracts,
there's there's no, You're not a free agent every year.
That's it's yeah, that part, that part is is ridiculous,
completely ridiculous. I have so I have some off air
stories for you that can that that will that will listen.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
I'm hearing them. In the last three hours, I was
just with Jeremy Cox. You know Jeremy Well, sure, it's
just a coach at Oklahoma State. This guy has been
at every level. He was a long time great juco coach.
And he told me even in the first twenty four
hours of the portal that some kids have already shut
it down because they've actually been recruited all year. And
Kevin Willard had the best line of all. In mid December,

(17:04):
someone asked him about the transfer portal in March, and
he said, the transfer portal opened on November fifth, the
opening night of the season, because the first kid that
plays eight minutes in the first game is calling home
or the agent or the AAU guy and saying, get
me out of here, and what we're missing again, Listen,
We notice some good things about nil and transferring, but

(17:27):
what we're missing is kids fighting through adversity. You got
coached hard by a Hall of Fame coach. You know,
I'm sure there were days you went back to your
dorm because you probably didn't live in an apartment. Then
maybe you did, but my point is like there were
probably days where you probably despised that he said. And
because you know ragdiover to Colls and big deal, he
made you better.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
No, listen me, let me tell you the real honesty. Okay,
are you in gallag Grabber right now?

Speaker 5 (17:52):
No, I'm I'm at I'm at the beautiful home, two
suites on Hall of Fame Avenue.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
They didn't put you on Campusky.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
Come on, is like one hundred and fifty bucks. You
can get it. I can get it all Thamesque one nine.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Come on, man, Okay, so so uh so the old arena,
which is they built the new arena like over the
top of it, right at it. Whatever you get kicked out,
you get kicked out of practice, and coach said, go home,
get out of here. You just get out of here.
So you'd you know a lot of times you would
stop and not even you know not even you know, uh,

(18:28):
you just literally walk out of there. I would walk
out of the arena, okay, in my gear and just
because I lived down the street from for a while,
from down uh Elm Street, uh just to cross Duck
for Meskimo Joe's. And you'd be walking and and what
he would tell you would be like, you can't you
already transferred? Youbody transfers twice. You know you want to

(18:51):
go home to California goodbye. You know, basically your college
career is over. And so and I understand that on
the outside looking in, it feels like that maybe bullying
or forcing a kid. But at some point you need that,
at some point you need the tough love. At some
point you need to grow up and decide this is
where what I've chosen to do, and I'm going to

(19:13):
fulfill that and I'm gonna I'm gonna get through it.
And we we have eliminated that on a on a
multitude level. So where you are, broadcaster, I've experienced that, yes, completely, Okay,
So let me let me ask about the teams that
are still competing. Obviously, the SEC you and I know
they have, they have all the money. Oh, let me
let me start with Kansas. What that went wrong there?

Speaker 5 (19:36):
You know, yeah, I think I go ahead, Bill self,
Bill self knows many you know what they went over
to into portal last two years. I mean, one thing
about Bill, he's honest. He's going to tell you what
he thinks. And uh, you know, like I don't know
if it was bad evaluations or certainly bad valuations because
they paid some guys a lot of money. But you know, honestly, Doug,
you've got to treat the transfer portal like you and

(19:57):
I both know the NBA scouts who do this, well,
you know, background information. Do you look at how the
kid did against Power five? You know, let's say you're
taking a kid from the Mid American Conference. Okay, well
he played seven games against Power five teams in four years,
three years and the average and you know in MAC
play he was eighteen a game, but when he played
the five or seven Power five teams, he averaged nine.

(20:20):
You know, like there's not enough thought as to I
call it this. I think this is these are the keys.
And you're still coaching, so you can tell your staff this.
It's a valuation. It's valuation and it's chemistry. You know,
you evaluate whether a guy can fit in with your
team style, you know, et cetera. Then you put a
valuation on him. Can we afford him? How much would

(20:41):
it cost for us to give him a disinnil deal?
And then the third thing, and probably as importantly, how
will he fit in. I'll tell you a kid. I
fell in love with him because you might ask me
about him, but I love Caleb Loff. Okay, I went
in with an open I know we're talking Arizona. You
know I went in with an open mind this year
at all. I heard all the negative stories. I asked

(21:02):
every single person that I know at Arizona, which is
basically almost everybody, and I said, come on, man, don't
lie to me. Tell me about him. Oh, he's the
most popular guy on the team. Players love him, coaches
love him. Tommy Tommy Lloyd said he hasn't given him
one ounce of trouble. We know he was a tough
shot taker for a couple of years and even at

(21:23):
times this year, but the kid plays, He plays his
heart out, man, And you know, he got the raw
deal at Carolina like they seem like they blamed him
for all the lack of success. And he's at Arizona
on the cusp of maybe you know, that's a veteran
Arizona team that's gotten better since they lost the Duke
early in the year. I think that's a trouble, a

(21:44):
troubling game for Duke certainly not the kind of game
that everybody thinks. I don't think it's going to be
a blowout. I think it's going to be a nail bier.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Okay, there's you know somehow cal got this thing going
at the time. What's the like that Arkansas and Advents?

Speaker 5 (22:03):
Oh, I think it's good. I mean, seriously, you know
on paper. Listen, I'm a Texas Tech fan. You know,
Graham McCaslin has done an amazing job. They've hit the
portal perfectly. They have the resources to do it. They've
got great resources at Tech, Doug. You know, the lot
of a lot of money in West Texas, trust me,
and they don't. They no longer have to cheat. Okay, yeah, no,

(22:25):
they can do I got it. No.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
I've told people all the time, like, you can win
a national championship with Texas Tech because of the amount
of money they have, the sport that they have.

Speaker 5 (22:32):
My wife says it best. She's an old SMU girl
nil Now it's legal, okay, and and but but you know,
it's a it's a tremendous team. But I love Arkansas
at the moment because they're they're more athletic than Texas
Tech is. Those two big guys inside are playing great,
you know, boogies back. They've been playing well down the

(22:54):
stretch of the season, and I think that's a very
Now every team and left in this Sweet six, I mean,
the one good thing about all Power Conference teams is
every almost every single team here you can say to yourself, yeah,
they can get to the Final four. And certainly all
four of those teams in that region, including Florida obviously,
uh the favorite out of that region. But I like
or I like what Arkansas is doing. They're they're extremely athletic,

(23:17):
and they're playing well at the right time.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
You are. You've been mister Big twelve for the last
twenty years and Houston's come back, come into the league
and what they've done is nothing short of remarkable. Yeah,
in the past, it was hey, they can't score, right,
they just you would get they can't score. Then you
watch them outscore Gonzaga, the team that that can score

(23:43):
better they do have some you know backcourt when healthy
that can really score. Yes, where is Houston against the field.

Speaker 5 (23:53):
They're playing three road games this weekend. I mean, whoever,
you know, they've got to beat Purdue in Lucas Oil,
which you know, and it'll say it doesn't matter, and
maybe he really feels that way, but I think that's
going to be a you know, a street fight because
of the home crowd. You know, produced sixty five miles north.
You know, everybody talks about Braden Smith, you know, great year,

(24:14):
probably a first team All American, but Kaufman Wren is
a guy that could give them trouble inside. I think
I think Houston should prevail, but I see that going
down the wire like a five point game.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
In that neighborhood.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
And then whoever, you know, whoever wins the Kentucky Tennessee game.
I have a hard time thinking Kentucky could be Tennessee
three times. My heart's with Tennessee because I've worked for
Rick Barnes as you know. But I mean, whoever plays
Houston on Sunday is going to have a great home
court advantage because you know that whether it's Tennessee or Kentucky,

(24:47):
those people are going to travel and so I think
I think Houston's got a brutal bracket for being a
one seed. And can they win the bracket? Absolutely, because
you mentioned they got in addition to de Health, a
Hall of Fame coach the defense to link the shot blocking.
They can really shoot it. And I've been impressed with

(25:08):
Ljcryer going from like the back of the bus, as
Kelvin would say. You know when I say back of
the bus, now, I mean you know the guy that
just hangs out in the back right and with the
buddies and joking around to no, no, no, you're up
here in the front with me and the coaches because
you're you're our team leader. LJ has really kind of
figured that roll out and is playing he can go

(25:30):
get his own shot, Doug with the clock going down,
which he couldn't do probably early in his career.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
For any of the best, enjoy still water. Do all
those guys, I said, hi, and we'll catch up soon.

Speaker 5 (25:43):
You got it, Doug all the best man.

Radio coming to here from the Tyraq dot Com studios
Iraq dot com. Well we get there, unmatched selection, fast
free shipping, free road as protection, over ten thousand recommended
installers t iraq dot com. It's way tire buying should be. Hey,
welcome in. So I thought we could do something kind

(26:21):
of cool here. Okay, So my intent with this radio
show while coaching college basketball is I don't ever want
to force it to be about something that's not okay.
I don't because I live in Green Bay and we
have the NFL Draft upcoming in Green Bay. I think naturally,

(26:43):
as we're going to be broadcasting live from the kind
of the draft area, kind of compound area, I think
all of that stuff makes sense once we get to
what is that the week of April twenty first and
leading up to it, and we can talk about it.
It's very unique and when I can correlate things going
on in our basketball program to things going on and
the rest of sports, great. But I don't want to

(27:05):
force it. Right, We're not going to force things that
don't make sense. But we're on the second day of
the portal being officially open and college basketball's season, it's
still not at its crescendo. Right. We got the Sweet
sixteen followed by the Final Four. But the guys, just
like so many of my friends, are texting me about

(27:28):
the portal and about what this time of year, what
it's actually like. So I thought, why the heck would
I not use my experience as a resource for people
to find out about something that everyone talks about but
very few people know about. Right? Is that a fair
depiction of it? Right? So I think we should play

(27:51):
a little as.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
To coach, there's a question that needs an answer, and
the answer is if only there was some one with
the authority and the wisdom to give us that answer.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
No, he coach, I get to set the schedule.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
Hold on, let's ask the coach.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
Okay, so remember the wisdom is a big thing. I
am also again, and I'm I'm like that maybe it's
a mistake, but I tell everybody, like, look, I'm learning
as I go. I don't. I never walk into a
room like I know everything. Dan knows everything? Okay, Like Dan.
We always go to Dan because Dan actually studies. He's
the guy who we always like, you know, we cheat
up his paper a little bit in school. Great job, Yes,

(28:31):
thank you. Dan. Who's got the first question for the coach?

Speaker 6 (28:34):
I got one, I got one, well, Jason Stewart, Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
H yeah, Jason, go ahead, Doug.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
What what is the most challenging part of the transfer portal?

Speaker 1 (28:44):
Oh, trying to figure out where you stand, you know,
because because the portal is open to enter in the
portal anytime over the next thirty days. So we've had
a couple of players who very early on so as
we got done, said hey, I'm going to the portal.
We knew it's good. I've had a couple discussions with

(29:06):
a couple more kids when they got back from spring
break who said, hey, I'm going into the portal. I
say that because, you know, I got a pretty good
heads up on everything within my own program. But knowing
when you talk to one of these kids, it's like, okay,
he wants to visit. Well, now they have unlimited visits,

(29:28):
so they can visit as many schools as they want.
So previously there used to be five visits. You can
only visit five places. If they're visiting. When you're like, oh, what,
we're in pretty good shape. Now there's unlimited visits, so
it's like, where do we really stand? I think finding
where you really stand with people is the hardest thing
or the most challenging thing with your own players and

(29:49):
with potential incoming players. Oh we got one, we got
one of the back is that? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (29:54):
We got Yes, Dan Byer, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sport Radio.
The question that I have is do you refresh the
portal daily or to get updates? Like obviously you speak
with your players, but to find out who else is
out there? How do you go about doing that?

Speaker 1 (30:14):
Okay, so I'm going to Now I'm going to share
some industry secrets. You ready, So all of the big
agencies and then even all the mom and pops, they
have lists that have been circulating for probably about a
month and a half of guys that have either said
they're going in the portal or talk with some representation

(30:37):
or there's a pretty good sense. It doesn't mean every
one of those guys are going into the portal, but
what it does is it allows you to kind of
pre plan for if this guy goes in these here's
the representation, here's the avenue. Whatever. We use an analytics company,
it's called HDI I'll give them some pub because what

(30:59):
they can do is for our specific desires, and one
of the things that we want to do is we
want to at least evaluate, if not recruit. They write
kids at our level who are from here, from here
meeting Wisconsin, maybe a little bit Illinois, maybe a little
bit in New Minnesota. Because again, we feel like the

(31:19):
way that we can separate ourselves is there's only four
Division on schools in the state and you know, two
of them are high majors, and we feel like we
can separate ourselves by hey, come on home, and we
think there's lots of players at our level. So the
point is that, yes, we do refresh it. It is

(31:42):
one of my coaches. It's in their office. He has
the laptop open and you're constantly like refreshing, like ooh,
look who just went in. And there's actually a rating
system on some of these sites as to who's the
highest rated player currently in the in the portal. We
also use our analyst company to know when it's updated
players again that are from our area or have a

(32:02):
couple of attributes that we're looking for. And you can
do anything you can do based upon height, you know, reach,
you can do based upon three point shooting percentage, assistant
turn over ratio, rebound rate, whatever you want, and literally
it can kind of handpick guys. The great thing about
the pre portal or dark Portal and all those lists
is you don't reach out to those guys. You don't tamper.

(32:24):
It doesn't really do you any good to tamper anyway.
For the most part. Right it's like all it's going
to do is make you look bad. But what it
does is it can prepare you so that when a
kid gets into the portal, you can be you want
to be one of the first to say, hey, we
actually know who you are, we know where you're from,
We talk to your people, and we think you'd be

(32:44):
a good fit. And here's why. So yes, we keep
the portal website always open and our analytics company is
constantly updating us. And we do so so that guys
that we've kind of pre planned for, especially ones that
are from the state of Wisconsin, maybe from Milanois or
have some tie to one of our coaches, whatever, the
second that they go in, we feel like we can

(33:05):
not only reach out, but we're also prepared for reaching out.
We don't just when they go, Hey, what do you
think about my game? We've actually watched them play, so
there's a lot of lot of video that you're watching
as you go.

Speaker 7 (33:16):
Next question, Next question, coach gott Leiba Sam Kinsley here
from the Des Moines Dispatch Gazette Sunday Times. I want
you to elaborate and expound more on just kind of
dealing with what's your protocol for dealing with like representation?
Do you guys players individually contact you you get I'm

(33:37):
sure like family members, you get agents, like, tell me
more about that, and how do you kind of how
do you put those round pieces into square holes?

Speaker 1 (33:46):
I guess Okay, So I have a very good working
relationship with a couple of the top agents in the field.
And look, just because some guys are not like the
they have. You know, there's a guy in Detroit who's like,
he's he's young, he's starting out, but he's got some
good players, and generally, you know, I give them a

(34:08):
sense of where we are budget wise, what type of
kid we're thinking of, and then we usually talk about
about players and you know, what we're looking for or whatever.
I talk with agents. Some of it's with AU coaches, Hey,
I got a kid. A lot of people, some of

(34:29):
the most powerful people in the country right now are
junior college coaches. Here's why, junior college. If you went
to junior college during any time in the last four
or five years, you're going to get that year back.
And so it's not just that you don't necessarily want
to recruit junior college kids this year because junior college
kids that come out this year they're considered freshmen. But

(34:51):
what you want is, hey, this kid played for me
four years ago or three years ago in junior college,
which means he'll have another year left to play. So
you call the junior college coaches and say, hey, who
do you have, Who did you coach Who's going to
be in the portal that fits what we need. So
the answer is, do we talk to parents, yes. Do
we talk to family members, yes. Do we talk to

(35:12):
AAU member coach, yes. Do we talk to high school coaches? Yes.
There's a kid who got in the portal yesterday we
had been preparing for because he's a position of need.
And you know, I talked to his high school coach,
his former high school assistant, his AAU coach, and everybody
you know, so that I knew who I was talking to.

(35:34):
I knew what kind of kid. The other part is like,
you just don't want kids with issues, Like we're not.
It's just we're not at the point where it's worth
it to take kids with major issues. So we we
just want kids that want to come play basketball and
get better and hang out with some good dudes. So yes,
you talk to all of them, say I'm believed or not.
I mean, you know, it's it's interesting. I had a

(35:56):
couple other non basketball phone calls to make, and I
just sent a text like sometime yesterday, like hey, I'm
just gonna apologize because this is literally the moment I
wake up to the moment I go to sleep. Outside
of doing the radio show and researching for the radio show,
this is what I'm doing. I'm building my roster, both
with my guys that I have because some of them

(36:17):
are like, yeah, you know, it turns out I really
want to stay, and some of them are guys I
want to leave, and I get it, and you know, like, look,
part of it is also like I want to have open,
honest conversations even with the players who want to stay,
and the reason is, you know, some of those guys
like your role may have been bigger this year, and
then it will be next year because we have to
get older, we have to get better. It doesn't mean

(36:39):
I'm kicking you off the team. It just means that
you're gonna have to compete to even get back to
where you have been over the past three months because
we have to be demonstratively better. So the point is
that do we talk to The answer is yes, we
talked to everybody, and you have to be open. I
had a talk with the assistant coach. You know, lots
of people you push back on having an agent and

(37:01):
you say like, well why do you Guys like, look,
if they've signed a deal with an agent, that's done.
So all you got to do is, hey, let's make
the basketball conversation about basketball, and the money conversation. We'll
deal with the agents. And I actually like that because
that's how I've always done in broadcasting. I've never talked
money one time with a boss when I've been approached
for jobs, or even when I was at ESPN i

(37:22):
re signed several times over, or I was at Fox
and I resigned several times over I've never ever talked
money with the boss that's what do I have an
agent for. That's their job. You guys handle the money
so it doesn't get itchy between me and my boss.

Speaker 7 (37:35):
Well that's certain, coach. That certainly sounds a little messy
and open ended, but I guess that's the way they're.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
Doing it sounds messy over any well, just the whole.

Speaker 7 (37:42):
Whole thing now with the transfer, bole is just open
and messy and just wide open. It's like, uh, tread
and water in the ocean with all you know. You
got guys staying, you got guys going, You got guys
coming in. When to contact them? When not to?

Speaker 1 (37:54):
You can't contact them until they're in the portal. Yes,
there's there's, there's, coach.

Speaker 7 (37:58):
I just hope you have unlimited texting and calling on
your cell phones.

Speaker 1 (38:02):
I do have unlimited texting calling. Did anybody the minutes?

Speaker 6 (38:06):
Everybody has? I don't remember since the latitude for follow
up questions, this is way too latitude.

Speaker 7 (38:12):
But just me and the coach having a conversation right now.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
You did you just kind of editorialize.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
Your answer obviously, so he created.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
His own answer like it's a mess, Like I didn't.
Did I ever say it was a mess?

Speaker 7 (38:24):
No, I just it's the way I'm interpreting. It's very
it's very it's just so much wider in scope now
than it ever was.

Speaker 6 (38:31):
We could get this back on track, Dan Barr, Dan Bar.

Speaker 1 (38:33):
You have a question.

Speaker 4 (38:34):
I just, I just I was surprised that Sam gave
you more of a coach. Could you talk about sort
of question that's and I think that's what he provided.

Speaker 1 (38:43):
It's disappointing. Disappointing.

Speaker 6 (38:44):
Well, we got a lot of information out there from
the from the there's no such thing of stupid questions department.
Once you entered the transfer portal, could you go back
to the school?

Speaker 1 (38:56):
Well, it depends on the school, depends on the school,
you know. Again, depends on the school, depends on the kid,
depends on the relationship with the coach. But the answer
is you can, but they don't have to take you back.

Speaker 4 (39:08):
I would be I would have a tough time if
I was a coach having my emotions not getting in
the way, if I just found out a kid put
his name in and then being like, oh and now
you want to come back. Sorry, I would have a
tough time taking a kid back if he just jumped in.

Speaker 6 (39:26):
Yeah, that's awkward.

Speaker 1 (39:28):
It's very awkward. Some schools say, hey, you can't use
our facility anymore, but it is completely up to the
coach's choice. What I have chosen to do is you
can use the facility or not turning off your card,
but you can't use the locker room and you can't

(39:51):
get into our workouts. So are the guys play pickup
basketball after the workouts? And I don't know, you know
the number of guys who are on campus that are
in the portal, because again, all the guys that are
not in the portal that are on campus, we check
in with them every day and we see them. It's
come to workouts and they come through the office whenever
the other guys do not. But I'm not doing this

(40:12):
like hey, you're not welcome here, Like you know, there's
a reason that there's a very reasonable reason why all
of them. Though I don't agree with two of my
guys that are that are leaving and why they're leaving,
but again they're allowed to and I'm I'm going to
help them. I'm just different than some people. I don't
know how it works for everybody. Some guys get super bitter,

(40:35):
some guys do not. Some guys come and they're just like, hey,
get rid of everybody. I've had several coaches say like,
just get right to everybody, start over, and I'm like,
I don't think we win here that way. I think
we win here with the guys that were in the fight,
that kept fighting through the losing streak, that want to
get better understanding. The role may change for the lesser
next year, but they're all. All they want to do

(40:55):
is win, and those guys we want to keep. Those
guys are glue. Any other ones Okay, No, I'm the
head coach. I get to set the schedule.

Speaker 2 (41:07):
Hold on, let's ask the coach you got one more?

Speaker 1 (41:12):
