you from beautiful sunny Green Bay, Wisconsin. Hope you guys
are great, plus uh Los Angeles, California as well. A
lot to get to today as I'm really happy with
with this show and happy to be with you, right,
happy to be with you. No, no, no, no, no
(00:46):
you No, You're a special You're a good one. You're great.
I'm just okay, no, no, welcome in so I am.
I don't know about you, but this is a switching
time zone sort of thing, right. Those Laker games can
be late at night, and I don't know what people expected,
but the Lakers lose last night also known as the
(01:10):
Timberwolves won last night. It does feel like the Lakers lost.
Is the is the headline, whereas I didn't the Timberwolves
win the game, and Jay Stu, you brought up just
a great point, which is like, hey, wasn't it just
a couple months ago or so that we were like, yeah,
they're not going to be they're not gonna win a championship,
(01:31):
but this is for the future. And then people thought
they're gonna win a championship. So we'll dig into that
in a second. Let's see a little post mortem here.
Here's Rob Polinka, GM of the Lakers, also president of
the Lakers. Remember he got a promotion I think in
no small part because he pulled off the Luca trade.
Did they lose in the first round for Luca trade?
Here's Rob Polinka talking about the priority heading in the offseason.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
When you make a huge trade at the deadline where
you trade your starting center for a point guard, of
course that's going to create significant issues with the roster,
and we saw some of those play out. We know
this offseason, you know, one of our primary goals is
going to be to add size in our front court
at the center position, and that's going to just be
(02:15):
part of the equation. We know we have a lot
of work to do on the roster and it'll look
different next year for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah. Again, I think's like it'll look different and the
way it usually works when you're building a team at
the start of the year. And again I can't speak
to running an NBA team. It's far different, but there
are some similarities. Right, an injury here there can change. Hey,
this is what we thought would be. You make a
trade mid season, which I don't think anybody thought they
(02:43):
would make going back before the trade deadline, Like nobody
was saying, hey, you know what's going to happen Luca
to the Lakers. It just wasn't discussed, and so they
did make a change. But I think it's fascinating this
whole Lakers thing, Like, isn't today the day that Nico
Harrison looks like he did the right thing? Isn't it?
(03:11):
It's just sports is amazing on how people get caught
up in the heat of the moment and they just
lose frankly, all their faculties. They just do you know,
they poop and pee themselves all over themselves. They can't
control themselves. Because when Luca and the Lakers were good,
(03:32):
oh my god, this is the biggest heist ever, right,
remember Jason kids, Like some people will compare this to
the Babe Ruth trade. Cool Like yeah, no, not cool
at all, but people were comparing it to that. And
then now you fast forward to we've only had the
Lakers only played four playoff games.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Is that right?
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Five five playoff games? Yeah, it's four games to one,
five five play five playoff games. In people are like,
you know, hey, Luca's not in great shapin. Boy, he
really doesn't play defense, and maybe Nico Harrison's onto something
without playing a game, without playing one single game in
(04:19):
the actual playoffs, the narrative around Nico Harrison from this
guy's the biggest idiot buffoon. When is Dallas going to
get rid of him? To you know, he might have
been onto something? And I guess that's sports, right, I
guess that's sports because we do the same thing with
(04:45):
Lebron James. When he plays well, you're like, goat, greatest
of all time at forty years old. I've heard several
people on television, okay, various levels of respect ontel, but
not on television. They played, they've done something, whatever say
(05:05):
at times, you know, Lebron is still one of the
five best players in the NBA. And again, in a
small sample size in one game here, one game there,
at forty years old, you can go like, it's pretty amazing. Okay,
I didn't actually watch the game, but sure. And then
last night you see him falter in the fourth quarter,
and suddenly it's the choke. You're like, well, he's forty,
(05:29):
played the whole game the game before, it's oh no, no, no.
When he doesn't play, well, it's he's forty. Now, He's
always been forty, and you have to always take it
with a grain of salt. But this is just I
don't know, it's a remarkable thing that happened last night.
The turnaround for Niko Harrison without doing a single thing right.
(05:52):
It's like winning a battle without firing a single shot. Crazy,
the turnaround sports fire. What are your thoughts on when
you're watching the Lakers. I mean, there's there's a there's
a there's a more basketball centric discussion that I don't
think people necessarily have gotten yet. We'll get to that
in a second. But what are your thoughts on just
(06:13):
how much the world changed spun off its axis with
the Lakers falling again last night to the one.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Yeah, it was Douglas kind of like almost a three
step process. In my mind in thinking that the Mavericks
and the Lakers would have been better off this season
for not doing the trade in just terms of what
Dallas has and didn't have and what the Lakers didn't have.
And then he had the Mark Williams deal end up
(06:41):
falling apart in him not being acquired.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
So we knew that there was a gaping hole.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
And if you could rewind time, I think for the
short term, both teams would maybe say, all right, MAVs
would be better with Luca, Lakers would better with Anthony Davis.
But then the third step in all of this, Doug
just came to the point of and you touched on
the move, and we heard Rob Polinka off the top,
it's that acquiring Luca as part of this deal was
(07:06):
the long term move and it came at sacrificing one
of Lebron James's final seasons as of trying to win
another title, and that was the most I guess jarring
part of it. But if we go back to early
February and this trade isn't made, I think both teams
are probably in better position. I don't know, standings wise
and seed wise, you wouldn't be able to say that,
(07:28):
but in a better standing and position to succeed in
the playoffs than both Dallas and the Lakers ended up doing.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
No question, No question, it was a fairly impetuous move.
It was like, oh, we've got done, kind of in
cover of darkness, you know, on a Saturday night. Yeah,
it was. It was weird. It was weird, like, is
that really how we want it to be done? You
couldn't have just waited to the off season. But I
do think that this pending potential contract extension, you know,
(07:57):
is was the energy behind it. It was just like, we, guys,
we can't sign this guy to a three hundred and
fifteen million dollars, you know, four year guaranteed deal. I
can't can't do it. And here's why. As I told
you now, I'm gonna saying you, Dan Byer saying you listener, world,
(08:18):
you Nico is not an idiot. I've never understood how
someone can go from building a championship roster last year
to a complete buffoon this year. When the truth is
somewhere in the middle. He took some risk last year,
took some heat last year for some of the moves.
You know, people said Kyrie wouldn't work, or you shouldn't
(08:40):
extend Kyrie. He did, it worked, and then Kyrie got hurt.
And Kyrie has had a lot of injuries in his career,
although not an ACL injury like he suffered this year,
but many of the other moves. Gafford coming over, that
was him. PJ. Washington coming over, that was him. Even
(09:00):
hiring Jason Kidd, that was him. Remember, Jason Kidd was
not thought of as a quality game coach in the NBA,
going back to his days in Milwaukee or the nets.
He did. They got to an NBA Finals and no
one mentioned any of that. When they trade away Luca,
it was fire this guy. He's an idiot. There's got
(09:21):
to be something done. People in Dallas actually said, and
we had people come on the radio who said, hey,
even if Dallas wins a championship without Luca, this is
still a bad trade, which is the dumbest, dumb, dumb
stuff I've ever heard in my life. But it does
play into what I was getting to produces, which were
so overreactive to the immediate thing, and we can't just
(09:44):
catch our breath and have some perspective on some stuff.
And I actually credit Jay Stu, because jay Stu was like,
and Dan, I'll get to you cause you're saying the
right thing as well. Jay Stu was we're talking today,
is like, hey, wasn't this a long term move? I
don't get he didn't get when the when the playoff,
(10:05):
when the betting lines came out, Like, I don't explain
this one to me, and I can't except for the
power of Lebron James. And I think that's really it.
And Dan's what Dan's saying is right, which is like, look,
truth is, your teams were built for constructed a certain way.
You shouldn't let it played out and then make this
(10:25):
trade in the offseason. My only pushback that Dan would
be I actually think that was part of the genius
with Nico is he probably looked around the landscape of
it and thought, you know, this won't be perfect, but
no one's perfect in the West. And if I can
build this incredible wall of defenders and just figure out
(10:48):
a way to let Kyrie loose, like we might be
able to do something special winning games based upon our defense,
which oh yeah, by the way, is what Minnesota really
has done, right. They have all these like sized defenders
where you can't mismatch Hunt. But but you're right. I mean,
(11:09):
truth is, you had a team constructed. You completely changed
the construction or the layout of the team. And remember
the trade deadline is after the All Star breaks. This
is late in the year, and what did you expect
the outcome to be? But I think the answer is
because Lebron James, there's never any happy medium. It's either
the worst or the best and nothing in between.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Well, and this deal did come before the All Star Game,
because it was Yeah, but you're much more forgiving of
Nico in all of this because I, in your words,
I was one of the people that said I felt
that the Mavericks fans would rather have Luca on their
team than to have their Luca Mavericks win a championship. Now,
(11:54):
time may heal all wounds. I'm curious on how next
year in the year after plays. But I still don't
think Nico is off the hook, despite the great moves
that he made the year prior, and we were giving
him his flowers at that point, and we.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Were, but I don't know if if like there's no.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Like the addition of Gafford and PJ. Washington last year
were huge. I mean was. It was the reason why
they were able to navigate the West, and then they
just didn't have enough against Boston. But like those trade
deadline deals that they did last year were magnificent, and
I think that we gave Dallas the credit at that
point and then I feel he gave it all back
(12:40):
with this trade. Whereas Polinka and I agree with you
in essence of if you want to say that, Look,
Polenka has made some good moves with Austin Reeves and
Dalton connect who was involved in that Mark Williams deal
that ended up falling apart. In bringing those guys and saying, okay,
it's made some draft picks, he's done this and that.
(13:02):
That's I'm fine with saying that. But to have Luca
kind of fall in your lap and then say, okay,
as an organization that's built on stars, all right, we'll
do that deal. Yes, I think every other well I
would assume almost every other GM in the league would
do it. And so that's I'm just not ready to
forgive Nico and Polinka. I just think said, all right,
(13:23):
we'll sacrifice lebron potential championship year. I mean, after all,
we did draft this Sun and in exchange for that,
they get their franchise star for the next decade.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah, I'm I'm fast by the way the Lakers go
from here because he's the here's the problem. Okay, the
Lakers lost last night for a myriad of reasons, and
a lot of people want to point to their defense
and rebounding that that's a huge part of it. Right Again,
here's the impetuous nature of the basketball fan. The most
(13:55):
made fun of star in the NBA is Oho dan.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Byer Rudy Gobert.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Yes, okay, every year it's make fun of Rudy Gobert.
He stinks he's overpaid, you can't play him in big
playoff games. And all the Lakers did, like this is
the whole thing with like how why are they playing
Maxi Kleeber like hud Maxi Kleeber played for last year.
It's the same thing that you try and do with
Rudy Gobert. Make him guard out in the court in
(14:24):
space and then make him score in the post because
he has no post moves and you end up winning
that matchup. Three is more than two efficiency as opposed
to inefficients, right, And so that's all he tried to
do and exploit it it it didn't work. But the
issue with it is that though Lebron looks like he
(14:44):
should be a small ball five right, like Lebron's six',
eight long, arms big, hands two hundred and sixty two
hundred and sixty five pounds strong as an ox and
he used to be able to guard point guards and
you'd think. Bigs he's never been able to guard. Inside
he is not a good post player offensively or defensively
(15:05):
as opposed To Draymond, green who's had half the offensive,
career half the, accolades and, like he doesn't look, bad
but it's not like his body looks like A greek
god Like lebron at six foot five. Ish he, can
he's just that's what he. Does. So but the problem
with The lakers from now until Whenever lebron, decides And
(15:27):
lebron is going to decide when he wants to not play,
again is your two best players are your two wish,
defenders and that doesn't. Work you, know you can get
away with, one you can't get away with. Two and
last night they had. Three, Right they're three best offensive
players are their three worst defensive. Players and there's just
no hot in that and none of them, rebound and
(15:49):
none of them play particularly good, defense and it will never.
Work it hasn't and it. Won't and that's why you
Know Nico harrison goes defense wins championships is defensive, Rebounding.
RIGHT i learned that the hard. Way you can play.
Big you can play, small but your small guy's better.
Rebound you can play. Big big guys better, rebound and
(16:11):
the big guys better bill contain the ball, guard the
ball guard the three point, line but you got a.
Rebount SO i you, KNOW i think they're forever in that.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Space this is the best of The Done Dot Leave
show On Fox Sports.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Radio What i'll put Your Doug Gottlieb, Show Fox Sports
radio coming to you from parts. Unknown, really that's what we.
Are from outer. Space we fly and we. Land we
just got sports with you on a daily. Basis. Wow you,
know there's a couple of things That i've determined we're
(16:47):
gonna get. To don't call it throw Back thursday in a,
second BUT i do think we can all. Agree there's
a couple of debates in life which are never going to, one,
right just never going to be. One AND i thought
of one, yesterday Which Jay stu got, to which is
(17:09):
who actually Won World War? Two? Right Jase tuo's, like,
Hey russia actually Won World War. Two that can be
a debate last as as old as. Time the abortion, Debate,
no there's no, winner no loser to, it and who's
the greatest basketball player of all? Time matter of, fact
my Nephew gauge shout out to my. Boy gauge's going
(17:32):
TO gcu next. Year my nef You. Gauge he's, like,
yeah your your brother's see now because he doesn't Think
lebron's the second best player of all. Time i'm, like,
well you, know we grew up Watching magic And, bird
and so we Thought magic And bird might be the
best player of all, time right Until jordan was the best.
Player so the point is that these are debates That
(17:56):
i'm watching last night and then watching on social media all,
day when people can Pair lebron in the postseason and,
like Well kobe never did this And jordan never did,
that and, like, well, yeah but they didn't play when
they're forty years. OLD i Just i've determined these are
debates that will never be. Won in your own. Mind you're,
like this is an easy debate to settle, again that's
(18:18):
in your own. Mind we do this Every. THURSDAY i
think this is really a chase too, special but we've
all grown to truly enjoy. It some people, say don't
call it a Throwback. Thursday we, say don't call it
a Throwback.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
Thursday don't call it a Throwback.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
Thursday so this is a part of the show where
we look. Back we start with the year in, sports
and then we veer off into other. Things, chase, doo
what's the year that we're going To thank?
Speaker 6 (18:48):
You. Doug i'll take it from. Here did you guys
know that in nineteen ninety, eight this week in nineteen ninety? Eight?
Uh AND i want the listeners to all go back
to nineteen ninety. Eight what are we, doing what were
you listening? To what were you? Watching and what more,
importantly what sports were you? Following what do you remember
most from that? YEAR i bet you forgot this. Part
(19:10):
this week in nineteen ninety, eight a rookie by the
name Of Carrie wood struck out twenty batters in a.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
GAME i remember that Carry wood.
Speaker 6 (19:19):
Was going to be the next big. Thing he was
he Was Sandy Kofax Satchel page And Walter johnson in
the same, pitcher AND i think he pitched for three
more seasons Before Dusty baker threw out his. Arm you
know what happened this week. Too in nineteen ninety, eight,
(19:40):
guys some guy by the name Of Tim duncan won
The rookie of The year award in THE. Nba you
might know his. Name never heard Of.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Dan.
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Byer what do you remember most from that year in?
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Sports, well you, know nineteen ninety. Eight interesting. Year you
Mentioned Carrie. Wood he did last a little bit more
than three years up pitching That game seven that The
cubs lost on The marlins in two thousand and. Three
homeward in that game despite the losing. Effort, wow that's
a good. Pull And carrie would also in that twenty strikeout.
Game it was against The Astros friday afternoon At Wrigley.
(20:15):
FIELD i don't know If Shane reynolds was the opposing
starter or, not but it was quite a day For Carrie.
Would not only Did Tim duncan win THE Nba rookie
of The, year it was the final year of The
Bulls championship run nineteen ninety. Eight it was the rematch
of The Bulls jazz from the year, prior AND i
guess we could all just say it was the last
(20:37):
dance of The Chicago bulls and that's where.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Where did you get that phrase last?
Speaker 3 (20:41):
All, well i'll tell you, What.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
JASON i was driving in today AND i was thinking about,
it AND i was thinking about those six championships when
you recommended nineteen ninety, eight And i'm, like you know,
what that's kind of like their last, dance you, know
like when THE dj is, like, hey last, dance everybody
on the dance. Floor SO i thought that that would
be appropriate for that. Situation but nineteen ninety, eight the
thing that stands out most in sports to me is
(21:05):
The Bulls final championship against The Utah.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Jazz what do you remember most about about?
Speaker 3 (21:09):
That about that, SERIES i think.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Everybody remembers the. Shot my thing is it had all
the Things jordan and all the things Car malone leading
up to. It Remember. Carmeloon he had it well at
first he had two free, throws then he had the,
layup then he had to, steal then he had the jump.
Shot it was Like Jordan, Jordan, Jordan Jordan, jordan and
the defense was part of the. Story and then the
other part of the story Was carmelon had won THE
(21:33):
mvp and had the ball with a chance to win
the game and got swiped By jordan who came home
from the weak. Side and then also a point of
it was The jazz actually had time and got a
pretty good look And stockton missed a top of the key,
three the same shot that he had hit Against. Houston
(21:54):
was it that year or the year before to put
them in THE Nba Finals, ANYWAY i digress.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
LEVEL i was kind of fired up for that moment
Because Brian russell is now what he's in lives in
infamy as the guy that gave up that game winning,
shot AND i think he's one of the very few
players that has ever played IN Nba finals that played
at The Titan. GYM i could think Of Bruce bowen
AND i can think Of Brian. Russell maybe a couple
(22:23):
OF U nlv. Players.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Yeah, ALSO i mean you See Santa Barbara head had
a couple as. Well you See yrvine had a lot
OF nba players Same jim ninety, Eight by the, way
was The Monica lewinsky. Scandal do you guys remember that.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
The track AT i forget, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Ah did not have sex with that.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
Woman you Remember Monica lewinsky from nineteen ninety, EIGHT i
Remember mark o'meira what a era was For omeira in,
golf winning fifty percent of the majors that, year winning
The masters in dramatic, fashion and then a few months
later at The Open championship At Royal, birkdale ending up
(23:04):
winning that his second major of his. Career Justin rose
came on the scene that week as, well making his
splash with a birdie hole out on. Eighteen it was
prior to him turning. Pro he was the low amateur
at That Open. Championship but it was also sandwiched in
between heartbreak two On mira victories in. Between if we
(23:27):
remember when THE Us open it was held at The Olympic,
Club Payne stewart was oh so close to claiming his
SECOND Us open title controversial pin placement on EIGHTEEN i
believe on The friday of that championship where a short
putt By pain was missed and then continued to roll.
Out many players had problems with, it but in the
End pain could not bring home the championship and it
(23:49):
Was Lee jansen who won his SECOND Us. Open, However
payne used that heartbreak to fuel him the next year
to go on and win At pinehurst And pinehurst number.
Two but heartbreak for Pain stuart at THE Us open
when we talked about, golf but it was To Lee
jansen's benefit who claimed his SECOND Us open.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Title in THE, nfl how many quarterbacks do you think
through for four thousand? Yards ninety?
Speaker 3 (24:13):
Eight, Hmmm i'm gonna say, Six.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Jase Dou.
Speaker 6 (24:22):
Under because you're asking the question one.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
One playing in the, GAME i knew to Guess, Hi it's.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
OKAY i would have guessed wrong. Here brett fav was
the only.
Speaker 4 (24:34):
ONE i purposely guessed wrong to prove your point Of,
like IF i guess, zero you would have been, like
well there was one and that totally would have been let.
Down BUT i played the. Game that's ALL i asked
my wife to. DO i go just play how much this?
Cost and then just play the. Game, yeah Just, Rell,
no just play. Along that's all it.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Is, well here's what's crazy about. It, Okay brett favre
through for four thousand. Yards he had thirty one touchdowns four.
Thousand that sounds about right. Right he had twent three.
Interceptions all, RIGHT i mean it's just so different than
it is. Now you, Know Troy aikman was that was
(25:09):
his year was cut. Short twelve touchdowns in eleven, games five,
interceptions AND i think that was the year in Which
John elway they won The Super.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
Bowl, right, well they had just Beaten Atlanta brett fav
in The Super bowl right In january Or. February then
they were trying to complete their repeat and they. Did,
now The vikings really dominated that. Season that was The
that was the year Of, randall Conney ham And Randy.
Moss they were lighting up the, world right and Then
(25:42):
Gary anderson missed a kick in THE nfc title.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
Games even even that With Randy. Moss, okay With Chris
carter was the other? Guy did they Have jake what
is the? Other Jake? Greed, Yeah Jake. Reed and WHAT'S i?
Got Robert smith was their running? Back, okay so remember
snapshot of, today snapshot of Then randall didn't play in
(26:07):
the sixteenth game of the. Year they rested. Him he
threw for thirty seven hundred, yards thirty four, touchdowns tenor.
RECEPTIONS a very good year by anybody's, standards but, again
compared sort of pedestrian numbers compared to what people put up,
today AND i know they claimed.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Seventy, yeah especially when you think of that offense to think,
that you, Know culpepper didn't, There cunningham didn't throw four
four thousand.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Years, yeah it's, crazy you're.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
RIGHT i remember watching a sixty minutes piece On Randall
conninham and at some point the interviewer was, like what
music are you listening to right? Now what gets you
motivated before the? Games AND i loved the song that he.
Presented uh what a? Song what a diddy this?
Speaker 7 (26:58):
Is?
Speaker 1 (26:58):
So was It?
Speaker 3 (26:59):
Diddy this is too close?
Speaker 1 (27:01):
By?
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Next i'll tell you. What So next is from The Twin,
cities are?
Speaker 1 (27:06):
They?
Speaker 4 (27:07):
Yeah my buddy went to high school with two of
the guys that were in, next and so in college
we saw THEIR i saw like their yearbook.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Picture it was because they were in the. Yearbook but,
yep that was.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Also the year Where argentina won The world championship right in.
BASKETBALL i think it was In indianapolis that, year and,
no it was In. Greece but, yeah that was.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
Not so. Good WHAT i like about this song is
just the, subtlety and you know it's they don't say
out loud that the song is about dancing too close
to someone on the DANCE. Flm what typically happens to
males when that happens, subtlety it's a lost art.

was released in nineteen ninety, seven but in late ninety so.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
It was such a jugger number.
Speaker 6 (28:42):
Nineteen it was such a juggernaut that it won the
box office for nineteen ninety eight as. Well it had
a year shelf life at the box.

didn't he say like he was in town to play The.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
Dolphins, yes and you didn't.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Get that much crossover BETWEEN afc AND, nfc so it
had to be like really like an off chance that
The packers would be In miami for a, game because
obviously they're not in the same, division they're not in
the same, conference and you weren't playing THE Afc east
every year if you're in THE Nfc, Central so it was.
Odd it was quite the coincidence that he would be
(29:54):
In miami that week playing The dolphins because they probably
only went there like once every ten.
Speaker 6 (29:58):
Years, YEAH i mean that's it's a big. STRETCH i

don't know about. It, well people didn't like. It they
ended up In nobody likes the last, episode but this,
one The seinfeld, one really rubbed people the wrong. WAY
i liked it because they brought back all these old
characters to test against the. Gang they end up in,
jail and it's sort of, like you, know people always
want to HAVE.

Speaker 8 (34:06):
That you ARE i team coach By Jimyrick Jim, Herrick, oh,

It they Had rape The friends And Paul, pierce AND
i think they lost In Oklahoma, City Oklahoma city where
they lose that.
Speaker 4 (34:23):
Game it may have been In Saint louis because it
Was Katino. Mobley our teammate here At Fox Sports radio
was a member of that u R i, Team Tyson
wheeler on that.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Squad, Sure katino.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Heartbreak Is stanford rallied Because Rhode island was an eight
seed and it Was North carolina that year they were
the top seed in The.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
EAST i don't think it Was Vince carter, though Because
vince was my high school year in ninety. Eight when
did he how long did he stay in?
Speaker 4 (34:51):
COLLEGE i, THOUGHT I i'll tell you that maybe it.
Was it was because There's Brendan hayward. Us, yeah ed,
Coda Vince, Carter.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
Anton Jamison.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
Anton. Jamison he was a hell of a college. Player. Boy,
yeah that's good. Team that's don't call him throw Back.
Thursday don't call it a Throwback.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Thursday Fox Sports radio had the best sports talk lineup
in the nation. Yet catch all of our shows At
Fox Sports radio dot com and within The iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
App it's really, crazy really crazy on How Rudy. Gobert,
Now it's, LIKE i can't believe that The lakers didn't
do something to stop. Him you're, like It's Rudy. Gobert
he was the he was the butt of every, joke,
(35:48):
Right but that was the. Call that's Our tyraq play
of the day on K, fan The timberwolves radio. Network,
uh we'll get To Mark medeen in a. SECOND i
don't know if you heard This dan last. Night this
is an EXCHANGE Jj reddick had or the reporter in
the postgame press.
Speaker 10 (36:06):
Conference what do you recall about your thought process in
the moment sticking with the five you stuck with in
the fourth quarter the other? Day and is there an
assistant or someone maybe that you'll lean on tonight maybe
to try to get you, know some other guys.
Speaker 8 (36:23):
Involved if that opportunity.
Speaker 7 (36:25):
Presents are you saying that Because i'm inexperienced and that
was an inexperienced decision THAT i. Made do you THINK
i don't talk to my assistance about substitutions every single time?
Speaker 10 (36:34):
Out, NO i just think there's a lot of coaches
lean on their assistance in those, situations.
Speaker 7 (36:39):
As do os a lock every single. Time that's a weird.
Assumption uh.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Yeah about. That what you gotta tell me what's what's
going on WITH Jj? Reddick because there was no mention of.
It it's it's like the reporter was afraid to ask
him a question when it's a legitimate. Question you, know
was this your? Decision was it a group of think?
(37:09):
Decision you, know how does it work with you and your? Assistance?
Whatever but he's, Liked, oh Because i'm, Experience i'm in.
EXPERIENCED i didn't ask my. STAFF i didn't ask my,
staff and what? Happens AND i got to, SAY i
know this from both sides of. It the more defensive you,
are the more people are, like, oh there's something up.
There he must not be talking to his assistant. Coaches
(37:32):
people have asked me all, day, hey do you KNOW?
Jj not really not very, well BUT i can tell you.
This does that SoundBite surprise you in any? Way IF i,
SAID Jj reddick comes across as, crazy, arrogant very very
(37:57):
smart with his, words and a level of defensiveness which
is really kind of, attacking trying to make you feel
smaller or like you're asking something. Stupid AND i, Said,
hey That's Jaja. REDDICK i don't, KNOW, JJ i have
(38:18):
no bone to pick with. HIM i actually think he's
really bright and really. Talented was as a basketball, player
was as an, analyst wasn't his, podcast is as a.
Coach but THAT'S Jj, reddick, Right that's who he. Is
that is a surprise to. Nobody that is not an.
Act that is who he. Is and it does not
(38:42):
play well when you haven't won, anything you, know it just, doesn't.
DOESN'T i have no problem with the playing five, guys
Like i've often, wondered you, know what would? Happen and,
look there were times in Which LEBRON i don't know
if guys remember When lebron was In cleveland and they
were playing The warriors in the, Finals tyler would play
(39:04):
him the whole second half Because lebron could do. It
and the idea is, like, Hey lebron against the, starters
it's a. Wash lebron against The, bens it's a. Mismatch
why would you take out your five best, players especially
when you have the two best players in the court
or two of the three best players in the court
With luca And. Lebron so that's the obvious. Philosophy, hey
(39:27):
we went, small we stuck. Small lebron's done it, Before
lucas in good enough, shape we can do it. Again
but the, defensiveness the, arrogance THAT'S Jj reddeck cue that,
music because this man just got out of a press.
Conference so The lakers just conducted their postseason press, conference
(39:53):
or their post mortem press, conference and our Own Mark,
medina LONGTIME nba, Writer Fox Sports TRADIO Nba, insider was.
There Uh, mark howd this thing spin? Off its off as?
Taxes you, know you go back two weeks ago and
people were hopping out of the woodwork, going, Hey lakers
in five and The, Lakers lakers are? Fishing what, Happened?
Speaker 11 (40:16):
DOUG a lot of things. UNPACKED i, mean first, Off
minnesota played really. Well Anthony edwards sooka his game to another.
Level they had a lot of KEY x factor type,
players you go down the, List, Nasrut jay, McDaniels Rudy,
Gobert Julius. Randall but as far as The lakers are,
CONCERNED i think it was three. Things one the defense
and the and their lack of. Consistency they're really caught
(40:38):
up to themselves because they don't have defensive. Centers they
have good, wings but not great. Wings so that was
point number. One point number, TWO i think that we
saw The Luca dovich version Of dallas of when he
was at The Dallas mavericks before The Kyrie irving, trade
where he was holding the ball a, lot trying to
draw iso matchups With Rudy gobert or anyone, else and
(41:00):
some times at the expense of you, know Team bald
movement type, basketball and he dealt with The elvis's injuries
through the. Season and THEN i think the third thing
Is Lebron james still play at a reasonably high, level
but not the same kind of level that we're used.
To and we Saw father's time touch here or there with, turnovers,
misshots and you add all that together and, yeah The
(41:22):
wolves are dispatching The lakers pretty quickly.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Here, YEAH i mean that that thing was that was
crazy how it. Happened i'll tell you. This you, know
we can Blame luca and, say, Hey lucas holding the,
Ball but the mismatch, hunting that's that's. Great Saint, gean,
right that's who who designs their. Offense that's what he.
Does he's a mismatch hunter in terms of his offense.
SCHEMING i think that'd be interesting to. See, okay so
(41:49):
where do we go from here if you're The.
Speaker 11 (41:51):
Lakers, yeah, well based off of WHAT i gathered at
The lakers press conference With Rob, bolinka here's where they.
Go you, know they're. STAYING i had To, Lebron, James luca.
Dogrics that's that's they're not going. ANYWHERE i thought it
was interesting That rob made it a point that he
Views Austin reeves as part of that core With lebron And.
Luca you saw him play really well since The luca,
(42:13):
trade but also some playoff. Shortcomings but barring a blockbuster type,
TRADE i don't Think Austin reeves will be part of you,
know options that they'll deal. With but the other part
is about addressing the center position because they try to do.
That as you, Know doug after THE a d trade
Getting Mark. Williams you, know The lakers will say they
(42:34):
were scented the trade because they had to fail physical but,
regardless they didn't have a lot of center options and
in the regular season they Saw Jackson hayes play, well
not so much in the. Postseason they had some marginal,
options you, know With Alex, wnn but not enough FOR
Jj reddick to have faith in, that and instead he went.
Small so that's priority number. One and when you're looking
(42:55):
at who could be, available you, know the free agents
that are bigs this. Season to think of guys you,
know Like Miles, turner Like Brook, lopez Like Clint. Capella
you know they'll have to have the cap space to
make it, work but those are you, know the potential
options moving forward with.
Speaker 1 (43:12):
Them why did you get so? Defensive, WELL i.
Speaker 11 (43:17):
Think you outlined it perfectly that that's part of WHO jj.
IS i think it, also you, KNOW i don't want
to pretend Like i'm knowing this thought, bubble but just
seeing how he answers. QUESTIONS i think it was also
the way the question was. Phrased you, know there's a
lot of insinuation that he didn't lean on his coaching
(43:37):
staff BEFORE i think if he was simply asked straight,
up what was your thought process on why you went
with the starters or how did you weigh the pros
CONS i think that you would have seen THE jj
intellectual reddick version of himself where he shares the good
and the, bad the ugly of what came out with,
that as opposed to him being very defensive and then
(43:59):
leaving the press, Conference, uh you, know room and huffing and. Puffing,
YEAH i don't.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
KNOW i, mean, like what do we what are we
actually doing?
Speaker 7 (44:08):
HERE?
Speaker 1 (44:08):
Jj, like, yeah it's not a good luck. Regardless, no
but that's that, again is who WHO jj? Is, okay
let's let's talk to the rest of the. Places we've
Got clippers now biggest home game in their new arena's,
history where, suddenly you, know Playout Jamal murray shows back.
Up what's the state of The clippers nugget?
Speaker 11 (44:29):
Series, yeah it's very up in the. AIR i, MEAN
i think the thing that's VERY i would say surprising
with The clippers is we've seen them come up short
in the, playoffs but it always had to do with
injuries at the worst possible. Time, here they're, healthy they
have their guys they Have Kawhi, leonard they Have James.
Harden they've seen The Viza zoobots And Norman powell grow
with bigger roles like. That you, know they have roster.
(44:51):
DEPTHS i lose a great, coach SO i want to
put it past them that they can Win game. Six
it's elimination, game and they have the home, crowd they
got the. Wall but all of a, sudden The nuggets
have come back to, life And, DOUG i, KNOW i reminded,
myself you, know watching and covering THE nba that playoff
series have a life of its. Own anything can. Happen
sometimes things that happen in one game don't carry over
(45:13):
to the next. Game but given the fact that The
nuggets have gone through so much turbulence with The Michael
Malone Calvin booth, firing they had a lot of inconsistency
With Jamal, murray some injury, related some performance, related And
Nikole jokich's triple doubles weren't always enough because of an
inconsistent supporting. CAST i thought that this was the end of,
it especially after That game three blowout by The. Clippers
(45:36):
But i've been proven, wrong and so IF i had
to guess what's going to. HAPPEN i think The nuggets pooled,
it doubt just because they've been playing better basketball a
lot more than The clippers have this. Series but you know,
this this, series games, one, two and four have come
down to very dramatic last moment, Plays so it's very
(45:57):
up in the, air AND i think it's a very
stark contrast with what we saw with The lakers And.
Wolves or The wolves clearly looked like the better team
even if the games were.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
Close, YEAH i got, it, YOU i got. You Doug
Mark medina joining us here On Fox Sports. Radio doug
having some technical, difficulties So, mark you AND i will
just take it the rest of the way, here let's
bounce around a. Little you guys are talking About, Clippers, Nuggets,
Nicks pistons also a game two. Tonight it's been a
tough read BECAUSE i felt that The pistons could have
won the first couple of games of this. Series they
(46:28):
blow opportunities In New, york then The knicks seemed to
stronghold the series with their wins In Detroit game six.
Tonight do The knicks have the chip on the? Shoulder
do The pistons have. Momentum how does it play out
in This Eastern conference.
Speaker 11 (46:41):
Series, YEAH i think flip a coin. HERE i think
that what we've seen With detroit And New york is
that they're, steiling is just advancing to the next. Round
they've been, inconsistent partly with The knicks as that outside
Of Jalen brunson And Karl Anthony, towns they don't have
that kind of continuity and depth that you need to
be a team Like boston Or cleveland in The. EAST
(47:03):
i think The, pistons you, know outside Of Kate, cunningham
you've seen the, usual you, know patterns of a young
team that just got to the playoffs where you, KNOW
i don't want to say that they feel. Overwhelmed they're
very mature and they're very, aggressive but they just don't
have the tactical kind of experience to adjust to a
long playoff. Series SO i would still give it to
(47:26):
the Next But i've Also i've often thought in this
series that they've gotten in their own way a little.
Bit so it'll it'll be a slog, fest you, know sometimes,
captivating sometimes, ugly BUT i think it will be pretty
close either.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
WAY i Think doug's back with us now here On,
yes sorry about.
Speaker 6 (47:44):
That.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
Mark, Okay So, mark there's various stories you heard From
shams earlier. Today Rob polinka said at his press confidence earlier,
today and Again i'm not chasing the twitter, sphere but
there's Other twitter questions about, this that there's going to
be a lot of movement in the. Offseason, yeah what
(48:05):
do they talk who? Specifically are the rumors of them
going to be?
Speaker 11 (48:09):
Moved, well, yeah as you alluded, To Rob polinka mentioned
about that he anticipates there's going to be a lot
of league. Movement and NOW i don't think that this
will pertain to The lakers necessarily BECAUSE i don't think
they're going to go big game hunting because they don't
have the necessary pieces to do. It BUT i, think you,
know there's an expectation That Kevin durant will be. AVAILABLE
(48:30):
i don't think The bucks will ever, make, you, Honest
anteakupo available unless he directly asked. Him anything can. HAPPEN
i don't think it. Will BUT i think at least
twenty nine other teams are bracing for if that ever does,
happen to be prepared for. Offers so that's the. Feeling
and THEN i think generally we've just, seen even with
(48:52):
second aprin spending concern limitations since last, year just a
very fluid league embrace another pretty busy the off season
with a lot of transactions that may or may not.
Happen BUT i think the biggest domino is going to
Be Kevin durant because the writing has spin on the
wall with The sun's early playoff exit that hasn't. WORKED
(49:14):
i know Matt eshbiez said what he said on the
record that they don't believe in, rebuilds BUT i think
eventually it's going to be inevitable That durant.
Speaker 1 (49:22):
Still, yeah And Brian gregory today is going to be
named the general manager of The Phoenix. Suns Brian, gregory
by the, way is AN izo Guy ishbia was a
walk on Under. Izo it's The Michigan state sort of.
Takeover totally makes sense to anybody who's following along at.
Home mark great. Stuff oh by the, Way, mark you
(49:42):
say it's your, birthday it's not my birthday, too BUT
i think we can give you a little outro music as.
Well happy birthday to, You Mark medina dog appreciate.
Speaker 11 (49:52):
It i'll take the
