On a Tuesday edition of The Best Of The Doug Gottlieb Show: Doug reacts to the breaking news that the Knicks have fired head coach Tom Thibodeau and why he thinks the coach now gets the blame for the playoff exit.

Doug welcomes music/movie artist and rap icon Ice Cube onto the show to talk about the new season of the Big 3 and to get Cube's thoughts on the NBA Finals.

Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. You know, the progression

(00:29):
of events in our day, Jay stew I think is
it's normally not interesting to anybody, But today I think
it might be actually interesting. Right. And I say that
because you know, between you and I sharing notes all
day and then our discussion about an hour for the show,

(00:54):
you would think that we had nothing to talk about today.
You know, we're like three days away from the NBA Finals.
The only topic you can really go with with the
NBA Finals is like, how fired up are you considering
these are two sort of no name teams And look,

(01:14):
I'm a big obviously basketball guy, basketball fan. I know
all these guys and so I'm gonna watch, but I'm
talking about more of the mainstream fan NFL wise, Like,
what are you going to go with Stefon Diggs and
the pink cocaine or are you going to talk about
Aaron Rodgers. College sports, I mean, college baseball is entertaining,

(01:34):
and there's lots of dramatic back and forth between umpires
and players and coaches and the NCAA and some of
these coaches, and then just the flamboyance of some of
the players. Like Okay, Oklahoma loses in softball. I didn't
know that was actually possible. But some of the former
OU players are at Texas Tech, Who's bought this championship team. Like,

(01:56):
there's some interesting things you can go with. But when
you're when you're trying, I need to do a radio
show and ash'll show you're like, hey, let's find a
lead topic. Right, No, I don't know what a lead
topic always is, but this one was dropped in her
lap and it's a pretty good one. Tom Thibodau was
fired today as head coach or just recently just fired

(02:17):
as head coach of the New York Dicks. And what's
amazing about the TIBs thing is, I mean, there's just
so many different levels to it. The first part is
that just comes to my mind is gosh, golly, uh

(02:37):
I almost feel bad about, you know, kind of clowning.
Whoever asked Jalen Brunson the question this is going back
after they lose in the conference finals, there was a
question and Brunson kind of laughed it off when he
was asked, you know whether or not Tims was the guy.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
You talked about the confidence? Obviously, I feel like nobody
takes more criticism than Tom and this team obviously has
turned around during his tenure. Do you kind of feel
that going forward he's the same guy if t you
guys the rest of the way at next level?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
This is Is that a real question right now?

Speaker 4 (03:18):
You just asked me if I believe that if he's
the right guy?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yes, thanks, guys, Come on, I mean I felt the
exact same way. Is that really a question? Is this
really a possibility now? If I'm being fair, how many
of us knew that Tibbs had been there for for
five years or that Tibbs guess his age? Okay, it's

(03:44):
sixty seven, right, But the Knicks reached the conference finals
for the first time in twenty five years. In his
fifth year, they won forty one, thirty seven, forty seven,
fifty fifty one games, they've gotten better every year, they

(04:06):
gotten further in the playoffs the last three years. I just,
I guess I'm still just stunned. And it doesn't mean
that it doesn't make some form of sense. Right notoriously
doesn't like to play his bench. They came upon a
deep team and they lost. But I think the mistake
here is that we're judging result, not judging process. We're

(04:31):
judging result, we're not judging process. And we can sit
here and he deserves some of the blame. And I
thought it was a poorly coached last fifty two seconds
when they're up nine points. But I mean, just not
guarding guys and missing free throws and turn the ball
over is not tips. It's just not is it? Does
it technically fall under your purview because you're the head coach? Yeah,

(04:54):
but any head coach tells you, he's like, what did
you want me to do? And what did you want
me to do? So let me get this straight. The Knicks,
who have been sort of a laughing stock organization, they finally,
finally finally seem to kind of figure some stuff out

(05:15):
and they make it to where they're at. They go conference,
Semis Conference, Semis Conference, finals. They are climbing the ladder
of success, climbing the ladder of success. They promptly fired
Tom Thibodeaux after five seasons, which is the longest anybody
had lasted since Jeff van Gundy. But Van Gundy went

(05:40):
Conference semis, Conference Semis, lost in the finals, lost in
the conference finals, lost in the first round. Then he
was fired early on the next season. It just kind
of worn out its welcome. I just I don't get it.
I don't. It doesn't mean that Tom Thibodeau is the

(06:00):
only coach available. It doesn't mean he's the best coach
on earth. But he fit what they were trying to do.
It mirrored with his best player in Jalen Brunson. And
whether you want to judge judge it based upon results
or you want to judge it based upon the process,
the process was better. It was better. And unfortunately this

(06:25):
is what we do in the NBA. And I'm sure
that Tibbs had to sign off on the Carl Anthony
Towns trade. Hey remember Karla Anthony Towns was also a
Leon Rose client. So the guy running the Knicks used
to be an agent, and a good one. And he's
a good dude. I don't know. I'm not somebody who

(06:46):
he was. He didn't rep me, but he rerepped friends
of mine, and everybody's like, he's a really good dude.
I believe that. But this is choosing beers, choosing tibbs
over choosing the play. Towns have been catching a beating
because he didn't play much defense, doesn't appear in great shape,
and he took some bad shots, especially in that last game.

(07:09):
Jalalen Bruns did to taken a little bit of beating.
How many times had people said, hey, he's not good
enough to be your best player win a championship with
and we can, And there'll be people who say, and
this is not inaccurate. It is accurate that they only
beat the Celtics when the celtics best player got hurt,

(07:29):
But they were beating the Celtics regardless of that. Now
they had to come from twenty down. I just it
feels like a complete buzzkill to anyone trying to, as
I have done, put a positive note and thought on
the next season. The Knicks had a successful season. They
won fifty one games, They got into the conference finals.

(07:51):
They got to game six of the conference finals. Now
that's judging result process wise, gotten better and better, and
they change the roster the best players bought in. Will
he win you a champion? With a coach win you
a championship? He's never gotten past the conference finals. I
understand that, But unless you're bringing in a proven guy

(08:14):
who's won conference championships and gotten do an NBA Finals
and won a conference championship, what are you actually doing?
And it shows a continuing loyalty to the players above
that of the coaches, above that of the coaches. It
does feel like Leon Rose is one listening to fans
and then maybe maybe listening to Karl Anthony Towns, who's

(08:37):
this former client, And because he was taking such a
beating in the media, now this takes the blame off
of his shoulders. It puts the blame squarely on TIBs
for losing that last series. Whatever they say, it doesn't
actually matter. Reality of it is when you lose the
series in the conference finals. The furthest the Nicks had

(08:57):
gotten in twenty five years, especially the way and listen
Less lost Game one, and the first change you make
to is that of the head coach. You're blaming him
for the losses and again, I don't think it's fair,
but I'm not going to lead with a well, it's
not fair. Life's not fair. Coaching is not fair. It's
a great job, a terrible profess. It's a great professional,

(09:19):
terrible job because you can have an incredibly successful year
and turn around everything within the franchise and they just
don't think you're good enough to get them over the
hump and they move on. The shams tweet was the
Knicks We're leaving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach.
Sources this uespn Tibbs led the Knicks to the first

(09:39):
Eastern Conference Finals in twenty five years, made the playoffs
four or five years, led the Knicks to fIF consecutive
fifty plus wins season for the first time since the nineties.
The Knicks are singularly focused in the pursuit of a
championship and believe a new voice will serve as the
focus for the organization's next step. Starts is said. After
five seasons with the Knicks, Tom Thibodeau is out as
head coach. I can only think of one guy who

(10:03):
has not one NBA championship who you should call, right,
You would think it'd be Jay Wright because he's coached
you know, two NCAA championship teams. Because he's a Philly
obviously not New York, but respect he's incredibly respected. You

(10:28):
got three Vanilla Villanova Wildcats, and I think Mike Malone
is probably the other guy. You could only hire somebody
who's won championships. If you're going to fire Tom Tipeau,
only do it because otherwise, like, what are we doing?

Speaker 4 (10:44):
This is the best of the Done Dot Lead show
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
It's Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Look what you
did there? You knew we were having cuban. Ice Cube's
gonna join us. I want to thank God God, Mama
cook the breaks with no hog. Thanks Mom, appreciate that.
It's Doug Otutlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. So

(11:18):
ice Tube is going to join us in what is
it like five minutes? Sure, Okay, let's get into this
this story after I tell you that shortly after the show,
our podcast is going up. You missed any today's show?

with you wherever you go. Let's do wherever you want.
Lebron James is a podcast. This is what he said

(11:41):
on it on the Mind That Game podcast about youth sports.

Speaker 5 (11:46):
Track and field as well. And we were like super
duper young. You know, we played football all the way
American football all the way through high school. We didn't
just tap it at one thing and just did one
thing all year round. And I think a lot of
kids burn they burned out. Do you just tell him, dude,
just okay, I'm gonna just do this one all year round.
I'm just playing basketball, or just play volleyball, or just

(12:06):
play soccer all year round. You burn out, you know
at twenty two, twenty three, twenty four, you know, because
you've just been doing it. Are young? Yeah, thirteen they starts,
you know, they done. I don't even want to play
no more.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I mean,
did my son's gone through that with basketball? Just this
there's got to be more life than just just hoop.
And he did play all those sports kind of growing up.
But you know, everybody said, you know, you got to
kind of specialize. Whenever I think there's it's a hard one,

(12:47):
right because it's not fomo. But there's a reality too.
If you're not working on it, does it help you
in that sport? And guys are going to be better
if that's all that they do. I think a lot
of it comes to the high school coaches because the
high school coaches they don't mandate it, but they sort
of mandate it. But it's also how the high school

(13:09):
seasons and schedule comes out. I was a baseball player
and a football player growing up, as well as a
basketball player. Got to the high school, there's no way
you can do football and basketball just not really possible.
And there's definitely and basketball into baseball. I remember my
freshman year, and part of this is southern California. But
baseball starts like feb one, right, and the playoffs and

(13:32):
basketball go until March. So by the time you come
out for baseball, even if and I was making several
baseball practices a week, but by the time you come out,
like people already have their positions, they already kind of set,
and I wasn't good enough to come out and play.
So you're you know spot, you know, spot inning, spot
at bats, and then you get to the point like

(13:54):
what am I doing this for. I'm not that good
at it, and I'm not getting the opportunity to be
that good at it. So let's just focus on basketball
because with every practice I'm missing an opportunity to be
good at basketball. Do I think playing all those sports important? Yes?
I do. Do I think it's good for your body.

(14:15):
I do. I think soccer is great for people to
play all growing up. Unbelievable for your agility. It's a
physical sport to teach you spacing, you know, it's there's
obviously a great conditioning element to it. There's two types
of conditioning. It's not just about being able to run
around for a long time because you run slow. Then
you it's start and stop like like basketball, like football

(14:38):
in terms of speed and explosiveness. There's contact to it.
There's a lot of great things to it. What screws
it up is that you can literally play them year
round anywhere now and just because you can, mean some
do and they get ahead by playing that support more often,
and then the high school coach mandates it, and then

(14:59):
you kind of got to do it any But I
would also tell you that it's like, hey, here's the
issue with Lebron. Okay, so Lebron talks about what he
did growing up and how it worked for him. Lebron's
raised two sons. I don't know if Bryce did, I

(15:20):
don't know if Browny did. But I don't remember seeing
any video of them playing football or playing them playing
baseball or tennis or pickleball or anything. They just played basketball.
So you are a dad and he acts like and
I think he does a really good job being as
good a dad as he can possibly be. So why
not make your sons play those other sports? Why not?

(15:46):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
I could introduce him for his what he did in music,
what he's done in movies, or just as a personality.
Everyone knows who Ice Cbe is, and everyone knows the
Big Three, and the Big Three is back. It starts
June fourteenth in Chicago at Allstein Arena, live on CBS

(16:07):
and Vice TV. The One and only Ice Cube kind
of have to spend some time with us. Cube. How are
you hey?

Speaker 6 (16:12):
What's up, Doug? How you doing?

Speaker 1 (16:13):
I'm good, bro? What's it like like you've been as
ingrained with these big name NBA players going back to
when you're making movies and producing music and recording music.
Now obviously so many of them playing for you, But
we have an NBA Finals that's kind of devoid of
those big traditional names. What's it like for you, as
such a big basketball fan to watch the finals with

(16:36):
so many new faces.

Speaker 6 (16:39):
Well, you know, I love basketball, so it's not really
for me about your your name as much of you
as it is about your game. So you know, these
are the best players that could do it. I guess
these are champions this year.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Yeah, but I can even tell in the sound of
your voice there's like a disappointment there. Right, gets great.
I'd still rather watch the dudes that I've watched the
last twenty years do it.

Speaker 6 (17:05):
Without a doubt. You know, it's the finals you expect
to see, you know, a star studied event. Now you
just got to wait to the Big three stars. J't
forward ten to see a star studied event.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
Yeah, that was kind of my point, which is it's
crazy the names that you're able to get to play
in the Big Three. What's it like it feels like again,
outsider looking in, it feels like, now, are you guys
asking as much or more selecting By that, I mean,
you know, do you get are you to the point
where too many of the former stars want to play

(17:43):
and you get to select who's going to play?

Speaker 6 (17:47):
Well, you know, we still ask the you know, the superstars,
because you never know what they want to do. Some
of them are really done. Some of them when they
when they're done in basketball, their basketball, it's you satisfied.
And then you got some who still want to play.

(18:07):
Some guys they need one hundred million to play. Some
guys will play if you throw the ball out there
with enough people. So you just got to figure out
where the hunger's at. You know, we always say it
ain't about your name, it's about your game, and you
got to bring your game because your name is not
gonna last in the Big Three.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
No question. But you do have some huge names, right Dwight, Howard, Kemba,
more Ready, Land Stephenson, Wes Johnson, montrezl Harrald. Who are
you most excited to see in the league this year?

Speaker 6 (18:43):
Dwight for sure, Lance, you know Montrez see how they do.
But I'm also Michael Beasley's the MVP, Joe Johnson three
time MVP. So you know we got some performinable players
that's been proven in this style of basketball, and so

(19:09):
I can't wait to see him clash on June fourteenth.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
It is crazy, Like I'm forty nine and Joe Johnson
used to come to our games at Oklahoma State when
he was being recruited and he's still getting buckets, still
getting buckets in his in his forties. In terms of
legendary bucket getters, he got my mood up. Du rouv.
You got Joe Johnson, h and you talk about Michael

(19:34):
Beasley in your mind, who's the best bucket getter in
Big Three history?

Speaker 6 (19:40):
Wow? I would have to say Joe Johnson. Yeah, this
is tough. You know, they don't call him my sho
Joe for nothing. And you know what's great about our
style of play. You know, guys who've honed their skills
and and who have every trick in the book to

(20:03):
get a bucket, you know, have a place to play.
You know, these guys can't play eighty two games no more.
They can't go back to back. They can't do three
games in fort ninth. Some of them can, but you
know most of them, you know, first to fifty win.

(20:25):
You know it's right there on the NBA court.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
You know, you guys have been doing this for a minute.
And obviously you've talked about how many have tried to
take down the league, right, and you went public and
talked about how the NBA didn't want you guys to succeed.
What is it like to continue to build on this
league year after year when there's so much competition and
somebody who have tried to take shots at this league?

Speaker 6 (20:53):
And I'm used to being in this position, even with music,
even with movies, with you know, Q Vision or movie Company.
You know, we've always had to prove ourselves in a
new space. So I feel right at home right here.
I wish it wasn't like that. It don't have to

(21:14):
be like that. I think we're very complimentary to the NBA,
but uh, you know, we don't need them to succeed,
as you can see. And uh, now you know the
sports world is starting to realize it.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
No, they are, they are starting to realize it. Right,
So why do you think in your mind, why do
you think that people don't want to see you succeed
with this lake?

Speaker 6 (21:42):
I don't know, you got to ask them because it
don't make crazy man sense. Uh, you know if you
ask the crazy man, he'd tell you do this, so uh,
he scratching his head. So it don't make sense to
anybody but probably Adam Silver and Mark Tatum. And so

(22:05):
once you get a chance to interview there, please action
call me and let you know.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
I will, and we'll send you the table. We'll kind
of see what's up. Ice Cube joining us here as
we get Ready. June fourteenth, All State Arena and on
CBS Advice, it's another season of the Big Three. Dwight
Howard playing Campbell playing born Ready, Land Stevenson playing of course,
Michael Beasley, Joe Johnson and others still playing. How about
you personally, Like every mountain you climb, you get to

(22:29):
the top this league, you've built into a consistent success story.
What's the next mountain? Because again you've found them and
climbed up them and conquered them. What's next.

Speaker 6 (22:44):
Build a house on top of them? You know, it's like,
we want to be here for a long time, so
we got to be great for a long time. So
I don't see it as you know, we've achieved our goal,
We've only just begun. As they say, Uh, we want
to be here as long as the NBA or longer.

(23:05):
So you know, I take a lot of work to
get there, and I'm having a ball. You know, I've
had a great career in music movies, and you know
this is a new frontier when it comes to sports.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
Yeah, no, no, no question about it. What what for?
People haven't been to one of these events, right, And
I've been right and it's a great show. But Somebody's like, man,
I've always heard about it, but I haven't gone. What's
the experience like for a fan to come to say
they're going to come to All State in Chicago, that
that arena is really close to O'Hare they're gonna come in.

(23:46):
What's that experience like?

Speaker 6 (23:49):
This is the most fun you ever had at a
basketball game. What's great is you get four games for
the price of warning, so you get a chance to
see the entire league, and I think that's unique and
it's fun, and we have entertainment gonna start to finish,

(24:10):
and we got some great squads this year, so it's
like a basketball festival to come out there and hang out.
And it's an affordable ticket so that make it family
friendly and nobody's gonna tackle you if you go ask
for an autograph from Doctor j. The You don't have
to worry about that either. You know, it's not all

(24:31):
tight and buttoned up like you will see that a
bulls band, I guess.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
Yeah. No, some summer hoops with stars that you know,
and a game that's easy to digest, and you know,
it's kind of old school three on three in the
backyard in terms of the physicality like it is, it
is super physical. What's it like to get Dwight? Because
and and Dwight's game is going to be interesting, right
because it was so much based upon you know, defense,

(24:57):
shop locking, rebounding obviously still a value in the Big Three?
What was it like to land? To land Dwight?

Speaker 6 (25:05):
Great? What's good about this year? In Dwight? He's gonna
have to show more skills than just defense, rebounding and duncan.
So in the Big Three, you gotta have a whole bag.
You got to be able to pass, dribble shoe and
defend or you will get exposed. The help is not coming,

(25:27):
so you need to lock it up. And so he's
gonna have to show more than he even showed in
the NBA. So that's gonna be great to see because
I think he got it.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Hey, Q, man, this is a great league. It's gonna
be a lot of fun. I'm gonna head on down
to Chicago watch you guys. It's Big three dot Com
slash Tickets. Big three dot Com slash Tickets. Of course
you can see you on CBS or on Vice TV,
but as Q pointed out, it's way better in person.
You get four games, super family friendly, super affordable. I
encourage you to go out and see it this season,

(26:00):
the Big Three Icecup. Thanks so much for joining us, man,
I appreciate you.

Speaker 6 (26:03):
Appreciate you too.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
Me easy anytime in the things in your life. Jay
Stu that thirteen year old me would be like elbowing
me that while I'm doing it. Interviewing ice Cube definitely
one of them. And ice Cube knowing my first name right,
like having a working knowledge of Cube a little bit.
I've seen him at other events. It's really nice to me.

(26:30):
I mean, like NWAF the Police. I don't think there's
any question of all the cassette tapes that I had,
was the most plague cassette tape I had my in
my childhood or adolescent hood, if you will.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Yeah, I get it. That makes sense for whatever reason,
that stuff was off my radar. I was. I was
all about K rock music, grunge and Iron Maiden, and
then later and Wife I began to appreciate it. But
my first ice cube experience was Boys in the Hood,
which was one of my favorite movies back then. Sure,
and he was so good at it.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
Well, yeah, and then Friday was like, Friday was our movie.
From the two movies from my college days that resonate
the most, or that we play the most, were Friday
and Something about Mary. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
Yeah, Sam and I went over to talk about this.
There's a couple of movies, Friday being one of them.
There was one that we just talked about. I think
it was the what's that Coen Brothers movie? The Coen
Brothers movie with Jeff Danelum and Dummer No, not Jeff
Daniels anyway, Big Lebowski. Yeah, the Big Lebowski. I put
him in the same category. And you tell me if

(27:43):
if I'm wrong. It seems like those are two movies
that you enjoy most when you're stoned, and I've never
been stoned, so I think I missed the humor and
Friday and I kind of missed the subtleties of The
Big Lebowski.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Big Lebowski is very subtle. I don't obviously what's it called?
Is not Friday is not a subtle It is not
a subtle movie. It's not like in your face. But
the comedic lines are pretty obvious. And yeah, those are
two very different comedies from very similar eras. And so

(28:20):
you didn't watch Big Lebowski at the time when it
came out, like that wasn't on your radar then either,
And no, no.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
I watched both the movies when they came out, but
I have not been like these this long time appreciator
of those two movies. Both of those are iconic movies
for people my age. Yeah, because I never smoked marijuana,
and I always put them in the same category that
all my pot smoking friends absolutely love those two movies.
And there must be something they got out of the

(28:46):
experience that I didn't.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
I wasn't a pot smoker in college. I just I
don't know. It's just funny.

Speaker 7 (28:51):
The thing about The Big Lebowski is the dude, the
Dude of vines, but he smokes pot through the whole movie.
He's a pot but like the other characters aren't so
I wouldn't call like a stoner movie, but it's definitely
like the dude is always chilling with his little little
tiny doobie. So you know, I saw Big Lebowski in
the theaters with my mom and she was like, she

(29:15):
really wanted to see it. She's like, I don't. I
must sow. That movie came out in maybe ninety seven.
I was like eleven or twelve, but not probably enough
the best movie to show like a young boy. But
I remember it because it was it was funny. I
didn't get all the jokes, but I appreciate her taking
me now that I look back on it.

Speaker 1 (29:31):
No, I don't think anybody got all the jokes.

Speaker 7 (29:33):
The plot of the film is great. It's such a
well written film because it connects all these jokes and
all these like things that happened throughout the movie. They
kind of connect back. They circle back to him later
in the film, so it's pieced together very cleverly makes sense.

What about you, Dog Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio US
Doug Gottlieb Show. And we're on a Tuesday. NBA Finals
start on a Thursday. We thought it was gonna be
a whole home show, and then the NIXT fired Tom Thibodeau,
and now all of a sudden we have something being
to talk about. Let's talk about just for a moment

(30:54):
before we get to something about Ronnie James. I saw
from Athlon Sports going back to yesterday, Tibbs is out
first Knicks coach to take them to a conference finals
in twenty five years. So the Knicks have climbed back
into respectability and now in their pursuit of a championship,

(31:16):
they fired their coach. Bold move Cotton now doesn't mean though,
that it's that you can't get better. You know that
one guy gets you to a place place where you're
respectable and you're solid, and you're in your Eastern Conference finals.
Maybe you need a guy to get you over the top.
Knows how to play the bench better, knows how to
stop transition game better. I don't know, maybe knows how

(31:38):
to It needs to evolve a little bit, not sure.
Mike Malone, Jay Wright wouldn't stun me if the name
Jeff Van Gundy because of how well respected he was
as Nick's last head coach, Tod take him to a
finals and the job he did this year's assistant coach
just he's brilliant. He's a big mond, he's a great mind,

(31:58):
and he's a big name and he's worked in New
York before. I have to look at who Leon Rose
represented because that feels like it's part of it. But
this definitely feels like a Carl Towns was Karl Anthony
Towns was catching a lot of heat. Karl Anthony Towns
was represented by by Leon Rose when he was an

(32:20):
agent before he became the president. Now he's the president,
and I don't know if this saves Carl Anthony Towns
to the next but it definitely it definitely takes some
of the pressure of the loss off of Karl Anthony Towns.
There's a statement out now from Leon Rose. Our organization

(32:41):
is singularly focused on winning championships for our fans. This
pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom
Thibodeau that we've decided to move in another direction. We
can't thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul
into each and every day being the New York Knicks
head coach. He led us not only with class and

(33:02):
professionalism for fast five seasons, but also to tremendous success
on the court, with four playoff berths and four playoff
series victories. Unfortunately, we made a decision we feels in
the best interest of our organization to move forward. Tom
will always be part of a Nicks family and we
truly wish him nothing but the best in the future. Okay, look,
here's the thing. I it's one thing. If it's like

(33:25):
one year or two years, and remember TIBs it took
him until his mid fifties to even get a head
coaching job, as being a lifer kind of assistant coach
coach some of the minor leagues as well. It doesn't
have to be fair, it doesn't have to be right,
to be well within the bounds of what the Knicks

(33:46):
are gonna do. You have a contract, lons fulfill that contract,
pay you every penny. If he has any money left over,
he'll get all of it, and it's their decision to
move on again, doesn't that have to be the right
move and also mean it's the wrong move. We don't
know about the inner workings of the team. We don't
know why the defense had so many breakdowns. Is it

(34:07):
Carl Anthon Towns or was that Carlnthon Towns didn't jibe
with the system. I don't know. I don't know. I
do know that's a big challenge though, to follow in
those shoes. And I do know that there's been plenty
of teams that have gotten the Eastern Conference Finals, especially
after beating beating up teams like you know, the Celtics
collapsed in Game one, in Game two and then the

(34:28):
Jason Tatum injury obviously made it so they weren't going
to be competitive, but they did just beat the Celtics.
That did really happen. So it's surprising, nonetheless that he's
he's let go from his position. Let me read you
this other story, this from Athlon Supports yesterday. Twenty year
old Brownie James is said to be a part of
the NBA roster for much longer in the upcoming months

(34:49):
due to his impressive developmental League showing. I don't think
there's any doubt that that's their plan, and executive told
Athlon Sports. I know the guy gets a lot of
grief because of who his dad is, but we've seen
a lot of tape on Brian. The fact is he
was a lot better in April than he was in
October and definitely in July. He's twenty years old, he
had a whole year where his development was thrown out

(35:10):
a whack. But he can defend the perimeter. He showed
us he can shoot the three, and if he can
show us it wasn't a fluke, he's going to be
getting ten to fifteen minutes to night because the team
is going to feel like they can trust him. Okay,
I just again, I don't know who the executive is.

(35:30):
It is one, and I think there was a There's
one question that was not asked that would be fair
to ask, and that question would be does he deserve
to be would he be on your roster right? Would
he be in the rotation? And yeah, the numbers did

(35:51):
dramatically improve late in the year in the G League.
He shot forty four from the field, he shot thirty
eight from three. He did have end up having a
positive plus minus. I just ten to fifteen minutes a
game makes some rotation player. Does that mean they're replacing

(36:13):
Gabe Vincent with him? I don't know. And again, the
bigger part of this story is not Bronnie James. It's
part of it, right, because if you're going to play
Bronnie that many minutes and you're going to keep Lebron,

(36:33):
you're going to keep Austin Reeves, You're going to keep
uh Luca. I don't know how you're winning a championship
with three guys that don't defend. But the question becomes,
how can bron how can Lebron walk away after essentially

(36:53):
mandating that they draft Bronnie and not draft Rice. You
go from best that ever to worse dad. Ever, right
if he retires at the end of next year. Hey,
I'm gonna retire at the end of next year. Like, wait, well,
you could have had Bryce and made them draft and
develop him there. Nah, Bryce is fine, He'll fend for now.
If you've ever raised kids, you do know that that

(37:15):
second born, third born just they raised themselves. I know,
I was a third born. I literally got myself vaccinated.
I vaccinated myself. I taught myself everything I know because
I'm a third kid. But can you imagine if Ronnie
takes that next step and Bryce goes to Arizona and look,
full disclosure, Bryce is way behind Ronnie as a player

(37:39):
more athletic. Sure has some plays which are interesting, but
he's he's not an NBA player. But Ronnie was an
NBA player either, and they drafted him and told us
that he told us that he'd earned it. So I
just think it's very unlikely that lebron James will help

(38:04):
Bronnie's development. And if Bronnie develops into a ten to
fifteen minute a game guy, I think that's way too
much to ask. But if he does develop into a
ten to fifteen minute a game guy, then what Lebron's
going to say is, hey, look, Bronni didn't have much
of a freshman year. He ends up being a ten
to fifteen minute a game guy. Let's draft Bryce. Same
thing can easily happen. We know how to develop players.

(38:28):
What it tells me is Lebron's going to play two
more years. That's what tells me. And as for Bronnie James,
will he develop into a rotation guy? I don't think so.
But the numbers, especially late in the year, dramatically improved.

(38:49):
But I think also if you look at the numbers
of a lot of people late in the year in
the G League, they dramatically improve because the level of
competition was as good as the end of the year.
Because at the end of the year, by the time
he was making, guys that were good in the G
League had already been called up. So, but gonna be

(39:09):
interesting because as much as we think aighties are grown ups,
they're grown men. They get their contracts like magic. If
your Gaye Benson, who injured two years ago, plays this
year and you're like, yeah, I'm gonna give up my
minutes to Brownie James. When I played, I was a
starting point guard, for an NBA Finals team a couple
years ago, and the big follow up that's missing is

(39:29):
would you trust him? Would he be in your rotation?
