Hope you're doing great. Doot do doo doo doo doop,
got an awesome hour for you. Uh Darren Ravel be
our guest, longtime business of sports and guru. We'll talk
a little bit about a story he broke yesterday. Why
would Bill Belichick and his girlfriend want a trademark gold digger?
(00:46):
That up coming? But can't get to any of that
until we get to the fun stuff fun stuff upcoming.
For forty years, Tyreck's been helping gust fers on the
right tach for how what where they drive ship fast
and free back by free road as protection with comedian
solution options like mobile tire slation Right dot Com The
way tire buying should be. Hey, it's a Thursday. It's
also game Day, lots of college football games tonight throughout
(01:08):
an incredible weekend. Yeah, I'll tell you exactly what we
should do. We should play a little don't call it
throwback Thursday.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Don't call it a throwback throw back Thursday.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Thurs All right, Jay Stu, what do you got by?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. I want
all of the listeners and the contributors on the show
to think of what they were doing twenty one years ago,
this week, twenty one years ago, this week, Uh, the
year two thousand and four. My goodness, what was going
on in two thousand and four. I think we're in
the middle of two terms for uh, George w A
(01:57):
bunch of fun stuff, bunch of fun stuff. But what
did happen? Specifically? I found this gem. I don't know
if you remember this, but on a list of most
memorable Week one games in the history of college football,
this came up. Now listen to the game and then
listen to all the fun names that are associated with it.
So twenty one years ago, Isaac LSU played Oregon State.
(02:23):
Why is that significant? Well, LSU was coming off a
national title that Nick Saban just won for them. If
you don't recall. It also would eventually be Nick Saban's
last year in LSU before taking the Dolphins job. But
what happened in between? They played a humdinger Week one
against Oregon State. Mike Riley was the head coach at
Oregon State. It went down to the wire, so much
(02:45):
so that it went into overtime and on the conversion attempt,
Isaac Oregon State's kicker Alex Serna missed the extra point
in overtime. I remember m LSU wins by one point.
They came in a thirteen point favorite on the list
of most Memorable Week one games and the History of
(03:09):
college Football twenty one days this weekend, Now, Doug, I
told you this would be Nick Saban's final year at LSU.
Do we remember anything else from that two thousand and
four college football season?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Oh god, so many things. I'm trying to think where
to start. Almost here with it.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
The Iowaweys were co Big Ten champions of the Big Ten,
sharing the title with Michigan.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
You have him an energy takes a mile. And then of.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Course, uh, actually we're talking about oh four, well, Iowa.
You know, Iowa ended up beating Nick Saban the Capitol
One Bowl. But I think we're we always give this
whole time frame mixed up. That was Nick Saban's last
game at LSU. We lost Iowa and the Capitol One
Bowl and a Hail Mary touchdown. Anyway, we're getting off
topic here. The National champions we January fourth, two thousand
(04:06):
and four. If we're going three into four, Oh.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
No, don't we're gonna do this.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
We don't do that.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
I thought we went. I thought we went three. Oh no,
we do four?
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Five?
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yes, we would have been doing this a year or so.
I gotta give.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
I know Dan always, Dan has to be here to
set the record straight.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
If this record has been set, now.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
We we do goof it up?
Speaker 4 (04:26):
We we we hear it was the USC Trojans who
pounded Oklahoma, but then that that AP title was later removed,
that that title was stripped. Wasn't it is here to
the USC specialists you talk about this.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Let's let's get to what what was big and.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
O for Capital Idea?
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Okay, what was Big and O four?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
The National Championship game?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
No? Who won the World Series four?
Speaker 5 (04:51):
I will mean the Boston Red Sox breaking the streak.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
I mean, listen, I love college football. College football essentially
starts today, although it started last week whatever. But two
thousand and four was about one thing, the Red Sox
come back and then the Red Sox breaking the streak.
It wasn't just that they broke the curse of the Bambino.
They did so after trilling three games to none to
(05:15):
the Yankees. And who stole second base to trigger the rally?
Dave Roberts, Jason Stewart's favorite computer printout manager. I liked
him in that spot, I really did.
Speaker 5 (05:27):
Who, by the way, had been traded shockingly at the
trade deadline from the Dodgers by Menende's brother looked like
Paul D. Podesta at the trading deadline that season.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
It was a killer trade.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Very good, very good.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
What were the Menendez brothers doing in two thousand and four, same.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
Thing they were doing in a lot of other years recently.
I'll throw go ahead, Doug.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Who did they play in the World Series.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
The Saint Louis Cardinals, as I recall, and they swept him?
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
And didn't when they film that.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
Movie with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore on the field
as the final out was going, gee fever pitch fever pitch.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
In other non championship two thousand and four activities, but notable. Nonetheless,
the National Hockey League's entire season of four to five
was canceled because of a lockout. I mean, we all
know that the World Series was canceled because of the
strike in nineteen ninety four, but it's still the first
(06:34):
and still only time that a professional a major professional
sports entire season has been wiped out because of a
workstoppage two thousand and four to two thousand and five.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Two thousand and four was the famous NFL draft where
Eli Manning went to the Chargers but was going to
refuse to play for the Chargers, so the Chargers then
pulled off a draft day trade where Philip Rivers, who
was drafted fourth uh was traded for Eli Manning. And
here's here's the big question coming to that who won
(07:07):
that trade?
Speaker 3 (07:10):
The Giants got two Super Bowl wins. No, which one
will be a Hall of Famer?
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Well, Eli will be a Hall of Famer, but they're
both Hall of famer. I mean, they'll both be Hall
of famers.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Is Philip Rivers a Hall of Famer?
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Yeah? Yeah, absolutely? And by the way, what did the
what did the The Chargers got Philip Rivers, they got
another third round pick, uh that became Nate Cating. And
they also they also got Sean Merriman. That's all part
(07:50):
of that. They got. That was the Giants two thousand
and five verst.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Run So.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
I mean they got was he Rookie of the Year.
I mean they got a Hall of Fame quarterback, They
got a Pro Bowl kicker and a Rookie of the
Year pass rusher. Like, the Chargers won the trade. The
Giants won two Super Bowls. Great, he's a Eli's a
great player. Chargers won that trade.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Go Chargas go. I just got a call on the
hot line. This is really very strange. So Doug just said,
hands down, the most memorable moment of two thousand and
four was the Red Sox. I just got a hot
I just got to call on the hot line from
Janet Jackson's right breast, saying they were the most significant
(08:41):
moment in two thousand and four, justin Timberlake and the
costume malfunction. Heard Run movies changed the way TV was presented.
The FCC came down, hardcore people had to apologize, and
then TV became that much more watered down network television.
(09:04):
That cup was spring loaded. Who again called you Janet
Jackson's right breast.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Very impressive that that that cup was booby trapped. It
was spring loaded. I mean, I think popped off that
thing we had.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
In college basketball, Yukon was your national champion. Uh. They
they beat Georgia Tech badly in the national championship game,
but the the game was known for the semi final
game where Yukon ended up beating Duke, and then Duke
had a last second shot that took the game from
(09:46):
a four point game to one point game where a
ton of money changed hands. You guys remember this. I
believe it was Chris Douhan. Wow, do you just don't
know about this?
Speaker 5 (09:55):
No, well I don't just don't remember that, But how
about that?
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Okay, Yeah, so I think it was Chris Duhon in
I was to say so it was a The Douhon
shot was a one legged bank shot at the buzzer
that took the game to a one point game instead
of four. Okay, But it was the classic bad beat
(10:19):
in the history of all bad beats because the spread
was two or two and a half.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
I thought, you guys, Chris Crosses the Gamblers something else
that happened in two thousand and four and concluded in
two thousand and four. I think the single most controversial
an event filled season by any team in recent memory
in professional sports. And if you want to correct me
(10:46):
if I'm wrong, that's fine. But the Los Angeles Lakers
that year. It was in the middle of the Kobe
Bryant legal case. It was the last year of Phil
Jackson's contract. Shaq was rumbored to be traded, Shack demanding
an extension. In the preseason, Shaq and Kobe having their
worst possible public feud the day before the regular season
(11:07):
started to the point where they almost got into a
physical brawl and the Lakers had to call Brian Shaw
down from Northern California to keep the peace. Karl Malone
and Gary Payton are in playing on one year contracts.
They make it to the NBA Finals with the point
four Derek fishershot in round two against the Spurs. Kobe
(11:27):
is going on private jets from pre trial hearings in
Colorado to play that night in Los Angeles multiple times. Yeah,
and they wind up losing in the NBA Finals to
the Pistons in five games. Still, I think that that
was the most controversial event filled single season with the
most drama of any team in recent professional sports history. V.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Three four Lakers.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Pretty good, Dilo, pretty good.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
It was right off the top of his head, too,
very impressive.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
What happened? We got to We haven't gotten to the
National Football League, have we? Now? Remember, Sam, All, this
is two thousand and four, which means it's the two
thousand and five playoffs. Okay, two thousand and four, which
is the two thousand and five play.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
You got it?
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, And that would be a man who
is now at the Helm at Chapel Bill Man at
the time heading up the New England Patriots where you're Super.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Bowl thirty nine. Yep, you got it. I was reading
the Roman numerals. The first of the back to backs
or the second of the dock to backs. No, that
was the second of back to backs.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Yeah, second of back to backs.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
They won the.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
Ajanta Jackson Bowl. By the way, here's an odd trivia question.
Who was Washington's head coach in the two thousand and
four season.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Jim Moore, Junior.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Washington, Washington.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Now, sorry, it was yeah, Sam, you got it. It
was Joe Gibbs believe it or don't be. In his
second stint, they went six and ten that year.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Do we say that?
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Who did I tell you the Tim hasselback story on
that one? Guys?
Speaker 3 (13:23):
No, no, go ahead, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Timmy told me he was in the quarterback room on
that year and when they went to the offensive install,
Joe Gibbs broke out the old tape and the wide
receivers were in a three point stance. Oh boy, and
the guys are rolling their eyes like, oh boy, we
may need to modernize this offense.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
By the way, say Tim Hasselback. Yeah, oh man, you
got a Tim hasselback story, So do what. So at
some point Tim Hasselback came in studio to do an
interview on the Jim Rome Show, and on the elevator
ride up, I asked him, I'm like, what kind of
music you're listening to right now? And his answer wasn't
surprising at all. In fact, in the twenty one years
(14:05):
since since, this song was the best song in the world.
I've said, in the history of music, there is not
one song that gets old white people on a dance
floor faster than this song. Yeah, yes, yes, chutch.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
A. I wish they would get back together. I just
wish they'd get back together.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
A a lot of hits, and it's certainly the first
time that I ever was introduced to Outcast, but I
guess they had been a big thing for quite some
time and they meant it. They made a ton of
money in the business. I don't know if it was
before this song, after the song, or both, but Outcast, Hey, yeah,
(15:10):
top the charts for thirteen weeks in two thousand and four.
Long thirteen weeks. Isn't the end of the song and
they had I mean.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
It's it's not my favorite Outcast all but Outcasts? Do
you not like Outcasts at all? I love?
Speaker 5 (15:26):
No, It's just this song over and over and over
and over and over again. Yeah, but sometimes they jump
the Shark.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Highest grossing films Shrek two, Wow, Spider Man two, Meet
the Falkers, The Incredibles, great movie, and The Passion of
the Christ.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
Oh no kidding, that was two thousand and four, okay,
Jim cafeezl.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Yeah, The Passion of the Christ.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
A Million Dollar Baby won the Oscar for Best Picture.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Of that great movie.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Controversial film, sports movie, and controversial about it the ending?
Speaker 3 (16:12):
You can spoil it she did assisted Suicide.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Yeah, man, was really controversial.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
I mean, yeah, you know, that's pretty controversial.
Speaker 5 (16:26):
I'm going to see that movie tonight, all right, but.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
Wait, wait where was it controversial? Like there were no like, well.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
So was it Clint Eastwood? Wasn't Clint Eastwood? Like the
boxing instructor and he had to decide at the end
he had like pull the plug on her because she
was in a coma, and of course, you know, yeah,
she wanted him to, but obviously I know. But it also, like,
let's not forget like people like Jack of Workian existed
and he was pretty controversial.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
So I heard he gave it two thumbs up. All right,
see dead at that point or in jail or I
don't even know.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Anyway that the movies that year also under the radar,
Two Good Ones, Mean Girls, and Napoleon Dynamite.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
By the way, two thousand and four classic Napoleon Dynamite
is still a great watch, you know, yeah, throughout that
I love them. It's so original.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
It was made for like two hundred thousand dollars or
FO hundred thousand dollars. John Hayter, I think I'm saying
his name right, the who played Napoleon Dnamite. He was
only paid. They shot the movie in three weeks and
he was only paid one thousand dollars total. So I
hope he got little royalties after.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Acting scale usually for independent movies.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
Yeah, but I mean so like even in two thousand
and four, that's like three hundred bucks a week.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
That's not a lot of money. The actor that I
think has gotten most work since that movie, it didn't
really spawn a bunch of careers is Uncle Rico. He
was recently in White Lotus Yep, yep. But that character
Uncle Rico, my gosh, we.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
I mean, Napoleon Dynamon comes up in sports discussions all
the time because of Uncle Rico, the washed up high
school quarterback who had delusions of grandeur. Well, if the
head coach would have put him in the game, I mean,
you could throw a footbll over them mountains of mountains.
So that was a nice sports time. And I think,
you know, people either loved that movie or they hate
that movie. There's really no in between. I loved it.
I saw it in theaters. I thought it was very original,
(18:11):
very funny, very warm hearted.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Also making its debut in two thousand and four, Live
Strong bracelets. Did anybody here wear Live Strong bracelets?
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (18:20):
Wow, I'm wearing the same style of like rubber band.
I don't know Live Strong style, but it's not Live Strong.
It says other things on it. But those were everywhere.
That was a showing of like you support cancer research.
What was it a dollar and that would go and
then it was like what two bucks a dollar and
it'd go towards cancer research.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
But it was it was a Lance Armstrong thing. Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
I mean at the time he was on top of
the world with the US Postal Service team, and.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Wasn't that the great I mean, honestly, is that the
greatest downfall in the history of sports. I mean, I'm
like's either Tiger or him?
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Right, Oh that's a good I think people welcome Tiger
back into you know, circles and events and stuff, and
Lance is still trying to climb as out of that
that mess.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
So I think OJ wants a piece of this. Oh yeah, sorry.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Point, fair point.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
I just got a text message. Fair point, got a
text message.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
You want to take a stab at it? So he said,
did he cut into this discussion? I think they didn't die,
He just left this earth. So he could look for
the real killers. Come on, where's my out there? Where's
my where's my ribshot? Thank you?
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Quiet one?
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Who just called you?
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Oh no, I got a text message from Big Mike.
He's literally, I think, as the crow flies. I think
he's probably three and a half feet from me. So
he sent me a text message. The most significant thing
that ever happened. That happened to me in two thousand
and four as I started working at Fox Sports Radio.
All right, oh, twenty one years at Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
I just opened the blinds. I'm looking at Mike through
the blinds. He's flicking me off right now, typical Mike.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Twenty one years anywhere is an awful long time. That's
quite the testimony. Who knows.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
And by the way, two thousand and four, congratulations Mike.
It also marked the premieres of such shows as Entourage
and Desperate Housewives.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
And it's hard to.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Convey this to people to war around, but Desperate Housewives
was a huge sensation when.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
At first premiere master it was I want to say
it was one of the last over the air network
shows to just hit big. Yeah. Maybe Lost came right
around there. Yes, you're right, it did.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
That Desperate Housewives show made a lot of women just
feel a warm inside and saucy and like, I can
do whatever I want. I can be a bad girl,
I can be a naughty lady and uh yeah, definitely
capture the attention of it.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
I think the subtitle was what was it, Desperate Housewives?
Is that what it was called? Yeah, Desperate Housewives. The
subtitle was why Women Hate Men? I think every man
cast on that show was in a complete a hole. Hmm.
I think it was complicated.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
I probably watched like three episodes of that.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
I don't see that sub subheadline on there. It's the
unofficial Okay your takeaway?
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Oh geez? You know what else?
Speaker 5 (21:23):
You know what also happened in two thousand and four?
What on a relationship note? J Lo and Ben Affleck
called off their engagements and Britney Spears married Kevin federloon.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Line Yeah, Fed?
Speaker 3 (21:39):
I think do they share cave? Do they share a
kid together?
Speaker 1 (21:42):
Yeah? They do?
Speaker 3 (21:43):
I haven't thought about in a long time.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Benefit two benefit was the shortened benefit.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
How do you want to you want to feel old?
Kave Fed and Britney's kids are in their twenties.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Wow, do you know what's the big social media social
media hit that year? Right, that was my Space. I
never got onto the MySpace thing.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
You didn't miss much.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
It was cool for a while, Right, I was Google
Lunch Gmail in four, Motorola had the Razor Phone in
O four. Uh, the Nintendo DS came out as well
as that little PSP. There was something else that happened.
Oh i iod Apple released the iPod Mini. He made
(22:34):
an iPod mini, sure mini. Yeah. And the biggest trend
in fashion were uggs. Sadly, I do have some.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Oh I hear the cozy uncomfortable.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah. And Da Vinci Code was the top the best
hour list I've read that it's probably last book I read. Wow,
I'm kidding sort of. Uh that s don't call it
throwback Thursday.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Don't call it a throwback Thursday. This is the best
of the Done Dot Leap Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
It It's Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Missed ay

and the best diversion of the show right at the
end of the show. Danny Canell will join us after
(23:36):
we get an update. But I did one to talk
of this story. Don Staley, who's won national championship out
South Carolina, won a couple out South Carolina, was on
the Post Moves podcast and she talked about being interviewed
by the next this offseason. Kind of interesting, right, here's
Don Staley discussing something which had been announced had been announced,
(24:00):
but this is what it was like from her perspective.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
I would have had to do it, not just for me,
it's for women, for just to break open that I
would have had to And it's the New York Knicks
and I'm from Philly, but it's the freaking New York Knicks.
How if you hired me as the first female coach
in the w n b A, how would it impact
your daily job? Because it would because you're gonna be
(24:26):
asked questions that you don't have to be asked if
you hire a male coach. There's gonna be the media
that's gonna be all this stuff that you're gonna have
to deal with that. You you didn't have to deal
with and you don't have to deal with when you
when you hire a male And then that that got
them to thinking maybe she's right. And then I felt
I felt the energy change after that. So I shot
(24:48):
myself in the in the foot by being in Leah
being inquisitive asking all this garn questions.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
Mmm, that's what did it. That's what did it. She
talked herself out of the job because of it. It
would be really hard, not impossible, really hard. And I
think one of the things is that in the NBA
(25:17):
you have to have the respect of the room to win.
To have the respect of the room, you have to
have one. So she's one. But I just would tell
you I don't think she would be viewed anywhere near
the same. Here's the other thing about Don Staley. Okay,
(25:38):
she is not the classic players coach. It is about
Don Staley. She is very good, but it is about
Don Stay And the way which she speaks to her
players is like everybody likes, say, well, she's old school,
Like she's not. This is not hey, let's get a
(25:59):
participation trophy and everybody feel good about it. That's not
how she's wired. I don't think she works at all
in the NBA at all, because women's basketball, just like
the trash talk, is like a caricature of men's BASKETBA
where it's like way over the top like guys talk trash,
but not to the level of the demonstrativeness of the
(26:23):
women's game. Coaching is much the same, where it's almost
a throwback to the eighties, where the game is simply
about the coaches and their outfits and what they're saying
and doing, and everything is about their word. In college coaching,
everything's about the coach. Women's basketball, especially in the NBA,
(26:44):
it's the least important person as the coach, and I
don't know how she would handle it. I don't think
it'd go over well, and it's not her personality to
be submissive in any way. I don't think it works.
Do I think there'll be more media because she's a
first woman. Yeah, initially, but after that then you're judged
(27:07):
really based upon your competency. So the first month or
two would be weird and there'd be some interesting interactions,
but after that, I don't think anybody care. I just
think they wanted to win games, and if you didn't
win games, then you'd be out. Then you'd be out.

Speaker 7 (27:41):
Swinging the ground ball at third, Chino scoops it up,
tossed across, and the ballgame is over. The Mariners hang
on and win it a final score of four to
three this same afternoon, and the series against the Padres.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Uh, yeah, I guess the Padres. There you go. So
I think Jase dou put that on there for one
specific reason. I just do. And it wasn't that he
wanted to celebrate the Mariners win, right, It's because Jay
s dou is fired up against anybody who could beat
(28:18):
the Padres. Okay, well, we're gonna have Canel in a
couple minutes. Okay, Danny Canell joined us a couple minutes.
We don't call it a throwback. Thursday. Top of next hour,
Darren Ravel is going to join us next hour. Hey,
can I get that sound of Chris Career? I thought
you brought up a great, great point in the in
(28:41):
the podcast. By the way, you can download our podcast
podcast only end of the show or hour and a
half from now where JAYCEU you were talking about the
the viciousness of the fan. Now that has become legal
(29:01):
in so many states. All right, let's talk about in
a second. Here's Chris Career. He's the GM of the
Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 8 (29:08):
I really have had many interactions with fans. No, when
I see guys are like hey, and if I'm out,
people have always been respectful and nice and they just say, hey,
you know, keep going, appreciate you. And so it's been No,
the guys to my face have been nice. I know
there's people that are upset, but that's that's any job.
And if I was comfortable and saying I felt great
(29:30):
about what things are, then I'm because I'm not being
realistic about where we are as a team and where
things are going. So after last season, I'm frustrated like
they are that we didn't win enough games last year.
I understand it. Like I said, I don't take things
person but when I'm out. People have been generally, you know,
very positive and stuff to me. But I know there's guys.
I mean, I've gotten some colorful emails from a couple
(29:54):
of people, including hoping my kids die of cancer, which
is a fun one. I was like, there you go.
So that's why I don't take things very personal or
real because other people have other issues and stuff in life.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
I mean, well, wishing people as kids die of cancer.
I just look, I get it. When you lose some money,
you're bitter and you want to talk trash to somebody.
You want to let people hear it. I have. If
you go to my ig dms like, you'll get people
all the time. They'll say things like whatever you want
to end if that makes you feel better. But is
(30:29):
there a can we all agree that's not a that
should not be normalized, We should not be okay, like
just I don't know. I would never utter that out loud,
even as a joke, for fear of karma reparations. Right.
But but Jason, I thought you made a great point
(30:49):
earlier today where you were talking about look that the
difference here is in the gambling.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah, that's the thing, right, So it's a combination of
social media, people feeling empowered to say whatever they want.
And then you add this legalized betting into the mix,
where people have more access to gamble on games, people
have more chances to lose games because of people's decisions,
(31:18):
and they have access to those people on social media.
I would venture to say, in the history of our
careers that the tension between fans and team members has
never been worse.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Fans and team members has never been worse than right now.
Speaker 5 (31:39):
And I would also add to Jason's thought Doug, that
this trickles down to lower level sports more than ever before,
when it was never this way in a previous generation.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
No doubt. You know, we can say that amateurism, some
people thought it was a sham all together or whatever.
You can say whatever you want about amateurism, but there
was always something about college kids where they were sort
of off limits, right I mean, I've run into this.
There was a player who played in Nebraska. He was
(32:14):
a little point guard and they were playing Kansas, and
I said he was acting like a punk right now.
And I was very specific with what I said, because
acting like does not mean you're you are a punk.
It means you're acting like something that you're not anyway.
There was all this pushback. My good friend Doc Sadler
(32:35):
was the coach at the time, and I was the
world's worth human being for a couple of days. But okay,
but that energy is like the pushback from fans and
from administrators was, hey, he's a college kid. And I
was like, why I didn't call him a punk? I
(32:55):
said he was acting like a punk because he was
trying to start a fight.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
There's a difference.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
There's there's a massive difference there. But again, the pushback
wasn't as much over semantics but it should been. Was
more like, hey, this is a college kid. Now we
don't have that same What's that I'm looking for? Amount
of grace? We have no grace about us. They're expected
to perform and they're not. They're not going to. I
(33:20):
hate to bring it to you whatever you think about
NFL football, Jason especially, who constantly tells us, and he's right,
that the product isn't as good as you think it is.
As a matter of fact, in some ways, it's very disappointing.
Wait till you watch college football. Not only are the
players not as good as the pros, because well that's
why they're in college and they're younger, but now they're
(33:40):
practicing like fifteen times with the team and then playing
for them and then switching teams the next year. I
just prepare yourself for sloppy football. Sloppy football. The only
good part about the early season sloppy football is early
season games don't matter as much as they used to
(34:01):
because we do have a college football playoff. With that,
we welcome in Danny Knell, of course, you know in
DK covering college football in the NFL for years. He's
a former starting quarterback at Florida State, of course, starter
in the National Football League. He joins us up a
half a bet on line. Check got bet online dot
ag for updated college fotball playoff win totals, Conference Heisman
(34:21):
and college football one week one lines. Let's go near
and dear to our hearts. Okay, let's talk about our
alma maters, both of very disappointing seasons, very displayed. Now.
Florida State was humming along, then their quarterback gets hurt.
Then they get left out of the college football playoff
two years ago, and the roof collapse. Where are they
(34:42):
this year? Man?
Speaker 9 (34:45):
I would love to sit here and say I guarantee
you they're going to get better, and I would hope
they can at least double their win total, but even
that might find Mike norvel looking for work if they
only got the four wins. You know, the win total
is in seven and a half, and it's really tight
number because I do think that's probably around their beat,
around where they'll.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Be, you know.
Speaker 9 (35:04):
And it starts off and out with Alabama going to Tallahassee,
a place I'm actually headed to right now. I'm heading
up for the weekend to do some work with them
with CBS Sports HQ. But it's the great unknown, and
Mike Norvella has once again gone to the portal. He's
boosted up. He's got a couple of transfer wide receivers,
he's got a couple transfer offensive linemen, and he's got
the transfer quarterback from Boston College, Thomas Costellanos, to pair
(35:29):
with Gus malson who you know. But here's the thing
that conturns me, Doug. I've heard a lot of times, oh,
this is the perfect quarterback for AU Gus maleson offense,
and it doesn't always work out the way everybody wants
it to. So I'm a little bit nervous about that pairing,
but this feels like I mean, if they're at seven
and five, which is just under their win total, it's
going to get really uncomfortable around Tallahassee because in a
(35:49):
normal situation, I think most most years Florida State would
have fired a coach after a two win season. But
he just signed the contract extension because of that perfect
season you mentioned, and buy out was over fifty million
dollars in Florida State doesn't have the luxury. He's just
been able to cut a check like that and it
only drops to forty million after this year. So even
if it's seven and five, I think could end comfortable.
(36:10):
But I think he gets one more year, and if
he's eight and four, I at least think the fan
base will buy in a little bit more. They'll see
some progress made the right direction. You kind of helpe,
you can stable the ship a little bit.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
How how has it gotten so? How do you get
so bad so quickly? Like how do you go from
undefeated to winning two games?
Speaker 9 (36:30):
So I think there's really only one explanation. You lost
the locker room and you had guys quit on you
because that team was too talented on paper. I mean,
they were a trendy pick to win the ACC again
the next year that they missed on the quarterback. You know,
dj Ue Junglay was the quarterback that was pretty polarizing
coming in. There were some skeptics on him, myself included
(36:50):
I didn't think he was great, but I also didn't
think he would drop out, like the floor dropped out
from there. And this is kind of I think a
unique thing in today's era when you live in the
transfer portal, which Florida State kind of has. They haven't
recruited as well as they've hit the portal. If you
have guys that you're kind of hired mercenaries to come
in just for one year and you know, help you
(37:10):
accomplish your goals the minute you fall short of them,
like those players that transferred in last season, they thought
they were going to be competing for an a SEC
championship and a national title potentially, just like the season before.
But once that kind of falls off and you fall
by the wayside and those goals are unachievable, which they
were pretty much after four or five weeks in the
season last year, then it turns into what I experienced
(37:31):
in the NFL, and that's when guys just start playing
for a paycheck and they start going through the motions
and as long as my check clears, I'm good. Gone
are the days of you know, playing for pride and
university and making sure your classmates. Like I don't know
how it was for you, Doug in college, but like
by the class of ninety two, that was our guys, Like,
and we all came in together. We have a lot
of pride in our class. What would we accomplish all together? Well,
(37:54):
today's game, half the class is transferred out, like most
of the guys are transferred, so they don't really care
about school history or playing with guys they came in
as freshmen with because a lot of them only put
played together for eight months. So I think in a
very transfer portal class. The guys quit on Mike Novel
at the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Stell Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Gonna be
ater Oklaoba State, Miama matter similarly disappointing season. They tried
to get rid of Gundy. He had a rollover contract,
so they got out of the rollover contract days. But
now all of a sudden, it's sort of win or else.
I don't. I still don't know if they have the
money to buy him out. But you know, they went
(38:32):
out in the market, spent a lot of money and
they have sixty new players they played tonight.
Speaker 9 (38:38):
That's unbelievable. Yeah, I mean it's the worst season since
his first year. I mean, Mike Gundy has been just
churning out winners for them, you know, almost his entire career,
and this really felt like an anomaly. But you do wonder,
you know, in a new era the players respawning the
same way. I am a huge fan of Mike Gundy.
I think the guy can flat out coach. I love
(38:59):
his the university, the fact that he played there. And
but again another team that last year, it was really
hard to predict because they had Ali Gordon coming back,
they had a lot of veteran offensive lineman coming back,
and then just the rails came off. So you wonder,
like culturally, what's happening. And then, as you mentioned, some
of those questions started to come in, are you going
to retire? You're going to hang it up? And you
know he gets the chuckles and said, my wife won't
(39:21):
let me, and it's all good. But if there's another
rough season. I do wonder how that unfolds, but I
have a hard time thinking they're going to be as
bad as last year. And in a wide open Big twelve,
I'm gonna trust the coach that's kind of been there
and done it, knows how to win in that league.
A little bit concerned about question marks. Zane Flores was
expected to be the starter. Hass Haney that got, you know,
(39:41):
younger player they transferred in. He's a redshirt freshman. He's
getting a nod, so kind of curious. But a guy
who I've trusted for a long time with quarterbacks and
quarterback development, Gundhy, I'm gonna trust him with that decision.
As long as they're not doing the hockey line change.
Did it a couple of years ago, remember that they
played like four different quarterbacks and it was absolutely wild. Yeah,
three different quarterbacks and they were shuttling in every other
(40:02):
series and moses kind of wild. They need to, you know,
find some stability at that position, and I feel like
they should be able to compete in a wide open
Big twelve.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of Danny canell I know you always tweak the SEC,
but the SEC has tons of money, lots of good football.
Calen de Boor, that's a hard deal. That's a hard deal, right.
I mean I would have had him in the playoff
last year, but they don't make the playoff. Now he's
(40:31):
in year two. How realistic is it to think that
he can get this team to the playoff where people
can allow him to breathe as head coach.
Speaker 9 (40:41):
I think it's pretty realistic, Doug. I actually picked him
to win the SEC. I think Kaitlen de Boor is
an outstanding coach. Like I don't think you forget how
to coach, but I do think there was a transition
period because you know, Nick Saban greatest coach we've seen
in college football. He's a totally different style of coach.
I mean, first of all, he's in defensive minded coach.
He's no nonsense. You know, he's very rigid with the
(41:04):
media when he was a coach. And then Taylor de
Borr is an offensive mine who's as friendly as against
with the media, a little bit more player friendly. And
in that transition period, I do think the players took
advantage of them. You know, some of the reports coming
out there. Players you know, they were saying, hey, we
got to stop being late to practice, which I guarantee
you they were never late to practice with Nick Saban there.
They never had a letdown game the way they did
(41:26):
last season. After they beat Georgia, they start four to oh,
they beat Georgia, it looks like they're going back to
the title and they lose to Vanderbilt. You know, as
a twenty eight point favorite like that was super shocking
to watch that unfold. Those types of things didn't happen
during the saving air because he was so rigid and
tight and held those players to such a high standard.
I think now that the players are more used to
Kaylen de Bor's coaching style and he's more used to
(41:49):
the players, and they're kind of acclimating together. I think
that'll help smooth that transition. So I expect them to
be a lot better. There is a massive question mark, though,
and it's Ty Simpson, their new quarterback. He hasn't been
able to win the starting job there, but he stayed,
he's been in the system. He brings Ryan Grubbed, his
offensive coordinator that was with him at Washington two years ago.
He's moving to Tuscaloos that helped him with that offense,
(42:11):
which I really do think will aid Kayln de Borr offensively.
And as much as you know Jalen Milroe had a
pretty good season last year, I don't think he was
the type of quarterback that Kaylen de Boor really wanted
to flourish with. I think Ty Simpson will fit his
Simpson system better as long as he goes through the
reeds and like makes the right progressions and doesn't play
like a first year starter, which is a lot to
ask for him. But the reason I like him is
(42:32):
they probably have the best offensive and defensive line in
the country, but on both sides of the ball, I
don't know. I'm sure you're familiar with Bruce Feldman. Is
the Freaks list. They have more than anybody. They've got
six players on that freaks List. You know, a couple
of them on the offensive line. They're all over the field.
They're still a pretty full coupboard that Kaylen de Boor inherited.
A lot of those guys have still been there, so
(42:53):
I think they're going to take a big step forward
this year.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
LSU Clemson, Sorry.
Speaker 9 (42:57):
Night, you like I like Clemson. I trust them a
little bit more. The one thing. Even when I say that, though,
I'm like, they were zero and three against the SEC
last year. You know, they lost to South Carolina at home.
They lost to Georgia at the first game of the
year and it was ugly, and they lost to Texas
in the playoffs. But I was actually encouraged the way
they played against Texas. I thought they played them pretty tough.
(43:17):
Score was a little bit misleading. Texas scored a eight
touchdown to kind of push it out of range. I'm
a believer in Kid Klubnick. I'm a believer in their
offensive line, and I'm concerned that LSU is circling in
four new offensive linemen around Garrett Nussmeyer, who is about
as much of a pocket passer as you'll see in
today's game. Like most guys are mobile, they run around,
(43:38):
he's sort of traditional. On the road, crowd noise gets involved.
I think that could really impact their ability to protect
Garrett nus Meyer. So I like Clemson. I'm laying the
three and a half. I like them to win. Watch
out their receiving core. They have three wide receivers who
are as good as anybody in the country. I think
they have their way. I haven't winning by probably six
or seven. I'm not saying they blow them out, but
I think they do cover the spread up.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Okay, let me ask you what Texas and Ohio State
we've only heard one person be critical of Archbanning. What
do you think of Archbanning? The quarterback as of today?
Not potential? What is he today?
Speaker 9 (44:13):
I think he's a typical first year starter, you know.
I mean, we've seen so many five star quarterbacks come
in and struggle. You know, some of them figured out,
some of them don't you know, Trevor Lawrence was a
kid who stepped in at Clinston, stepped into the role,
and he won the national championship his first year. We've
seen others who don't even get to start at the
school they belong to, and they end up transferred out
(44:33):
and transfer three times as five stars and still don't,
you know, meet their potential. I do think he's good.
I think they'll like, there'd be a pretty solid floor,
but I do think it'll be a bumpy ride. Like
the people. The thing that's kind of driven me nuts
is even Texas fans are like, oh, we finally got
rid of quinn Ewers, so we can have this massive upgrade,
and while I do think the ceiling is higher, quinn
(44:54):
Ewers had some great games in tough situations. Last year
he went into Michigan, had a phenomenal game, a couple
of touchdown passes leads him to victory. Two years ago,
he went into Tuscaloosa against Nick Saban through three touchdowns,
one on the road. Last year in the playoffs against
Arizona State, they had a fourth down to save the season,
to force it to overtime, he converts with a big
(45:16):
touchdown pass. Quinn Ewers I think has been cast aside
as some sort of scrub. He was really good for Texas,
and I just I'm curious if arts Manning in his
first year can come through with those type of plays.
I think eventually they'll come, but I do think it
can be a little bit up and down for him,
just like it is for every other starting quarterback for
the first time.
Speaker 1 (45:35):

Do you know what day it is today? Are you
familiar with data is today? I was say, are you
familiar what day it is today?
Speaker 1 (46:25):
What day is it?
Speaker 3 (46:26):
It's Thursday?
Speaker 1 (46:27):
Nope?
Speaker 3 (46:27):
Wrong answer that it is Thursday?
Speaker 1 (46:29):
Though, I mean you're technically correct. That wasn't the answer
we're looking for. Jase, do you know what you know?
What day today is? No?
Speaker 3 (46:40):
Nothing, I'm guessing it's Thursday. We gotta throwback Thursday.
Speaker 1 (46:43):
We do have. Don't call it throwback Thursday. Today is
game Day, suckers, that's right, Dame Day. College football back
Maya Monor, Oklahoma State, Uh Wisconsin play tonight, boy, see
it takes on South Florida. Here's how you know your
(47:04):
old school, right, this is how you know you're a
college football fan. You've been doing this for a minute.
Do you remember when South Florida got all the way
up to number two in the rankings. This actually happened,
number two in the rankings. I'm gonna go it somewhere
along the lines of fifteen seventeen years ago they were
(47:27):
number two in the rankings.
Speaker 3 (47:28):
Two thousand and seven.
Speaker 1 (47:30):
There you go, how many years ago that seven, eight, seventeen,
eighteen years That was actually really good of me. Two
thousand and seven they got to number two in the rankings.
Lost at home and Jim Levitt was the coach. By
the way, Jim Levitt got arrested was that yesterday the
day before.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
I think that's why it reminded a bunch of people
that they got up to number twos because he probably
the news.
Speaker 1 (47:50):
Yeah, you're like, hey, I know that now, I know
that name. Anyway, it is game day. That's that's the
And I actually I'll give credit to Chase do because
I think he picked him out. In the teams that
are interesting. Last year, the most interesting teams for me,
Colorado was interesting. Oklahoma was Mike because in the SEC
(48:11):
and I don't think Oklahoma fans have any idea of
what they've actually gotten themselves into. But of the top
five most interesting teams this year, Colorado is Jase Douo
has them number one. I would say it's a great argument.
You can make their one of the top five. And
the reason is you have coach Prime, but you don't
(48:32):
have Travis Hunter, and you don't have Shador Sanders. You
don't have Shiloh Sanders coach prime though he had a
This is interesting, let's discuss it. This from Yahoo. One
of the most talked about stories in the college twell
landscape over the last few years is how much money
players are making through NIL. While some argue that players
(48:54):
are getting their long deserved compensation for constantly putting their
body on the line for fans entertainment, others have oppining
that NIL has reduced competitive balance in the sport. Recently,
Colorado head coach Dean Sanders proposed another way to incentivized
players by having them paid for both making and winning
the college football playoff tournament. I think that's great. I
(49:16):
think the NCAA tournament as well. You know, why not?
Why not incentivize winning? I love it. All of these
contracts can be incentive latent, but keep in mind, yes,
the school does make more money when they make the
NCAA tournament, not so much money that you're going to
get a five hundred thousand dollars bonus or raise or whatever.
(49:38):
And if it was really an il, yeah, of course
you win a tournament, you should be able to get
it because your name, your profile should grow. But there's
this other side to it, or maybe two other sides
to it. First thing is that most the pendulum has
swung to where it is really, really, really pro player.
(50:03):
If a player doesn't like the school, the player can
put themselves in the portal. You still have to be
liked by another school. We signed a player yesterday yesterday.
Now he's we haven't announced yet. He's a foreign player.
I believe the PaperWorks in so I could technically talk
about him, but until I get an email saying he's clear,
(50:26):
I'm not going to because I'm excited about coaching him.
But the fact is that because he's a foreign player,
and because of the way contracts were written, he could
essentially have a great first half of the season and
then sign another pro contract back where he came from,
make more money and leave our team and we have
(50:48):
no recourse. Could we go out and get another player.
We could, but again it's way less than ideal to
do it. Then way less than ideal. So should you
incentivize winning? Yeah? Why not? Why not we incentivize grades
at our school. You get good grades, get Ober three
to zero, you get a bonus everybody across the board.
(51:12):
But I love that idea. I would love an incentive
Leyden contract, you know, an incentive Leyden contract, and maybe
that's what we get to. Those are the perfect contracts.
By most people's estimation. You achieve, you get paid. Simple
doesn't mean you have no compensation. But I think it's
(51:32):
a great idea because no one has any problem paying
more money if you're winning more games. It's interesting, like
Dion has so many good thoughts and ideas, and there's
so many parts about what he teaches, which are the
good way, the good thing. My ability to be critical
of Dion Sanders was merely in how his son treated
(51:56):
other people. Him being a quarterback is just different. That
was it. You know, we've had the showboat cornerback before,
the showboat wide receiver before. We haven't had that from
quarterback and or on a more limited scale. And there's
a reason for that. You're supposed to be getting along
(52:16):
with everybody. But as we try, here's my idea for
bonus compensation. I love the idea, but you should only
be able to collect that bonus if you come back
for the next season. Otherwise you're using the fact that
you won that championship or you won whatever thing that is,
(52:37):
and that's going to help you get more money at
your next school. Jase two poke holes in my argument
that incentive laden deals are good, maybe not totally realistic.
Or you still have a base, but you have to
collect the money the next year.
Speaker 3 (52:55):
Yeah, so you got to stick around to collect it.
I like the idea. I don't know how that falls
in the by laws of this current wild West, where
there doesn't seem to be any bylaws. And I also
think that there's something in there about the money being fungible.
Like Dion Sanders says, you know you should get bonuses,
(53:16):
and then your first thought is, well, then all the
teams that typically make the playoffs are gonna get that
much bigger an advantage in recruiting because they could say
we're gonna make the playoffs and you'll get this much money.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
But but they already have that advantage, and they already
have that advantage.
Speaker 3 (53:30):
Finance true, and money's fungible. In other words, if I'm
I don't know Texas Tech. And I go to a
kid who wants to kind of play near home. You
could be like, well, whatever that playoff, that playoff bonus
was that you were going to get Texas, We'll just
make up for it in the next and I el deal.
Speaker 1 (53:47):
Right, Okay, yeah, I mean you can do all kinds
of bonuses, though, I mean part of it is, you know,
Texas Tech right now, they're spending a bunch They're spending
a ton of money. But wouldn't it be better to
spend a bunch of money if you thought you were
actually gonna win. They're not spending money to lose. I
(54:10):
don't know. I think it's a fantastic idea. I think
the idea of having bonuses is smart. We have bonuses
in but they're only for academics. I see nothing in
the in having a bonus over wins and losses, because ultimately,
if you win, that's the idea of the entire thing.
I think that once you get into true performance based
(54:30):
bonuses and minutes and yards and stats, I think that
can be really hard because look, schools will try and
save money. They just will. They will
