(00:25):
spectacular day. I am so excited to do this show
here today. You know now, no, no, no, and you
should be excited to listen to us.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Eighteen innings, eighteen innings.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
And the Dodgers heard the criticism from one Jason Stewart
and said, our bullpen's awesome, at least for one night.
Matt Holliday's going to join us. A little later on
the show, John Middlecoff is going to join us. We
got football a basketball. Oh yeah, by the way, there
was a Monday night football game. Here's what I want
to do. Back when Twitter was Twitter, back before it

(01:12):
had bots, or at least we knew there were bots,
and before there was blue check marks. I love the
device because it felt like you were in a room
full of people who were all watching the same event
and would have funny remarks and comments or whatever, and
it was it was a little bit like Mystery Science

(01:32):
Theater three thousand and when I say that, there's going
to be a portion of you that have no idea
what I'm talking about. There's a small portion of you
that when I explained it to be like okay, I know,
and then there's a very very small portion view they're
gonna be like, yeah, that's exactly what it was like
Mystery Science Theater three thousand was Was that.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
A Nicked Night show? Jase Twet, I want to say
it was like a Nicked night.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Show that no idea, but it was.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
It was.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
The premise of it was there was like a robot
and a dude and maybe one other robot and they
were stuck in space, and so they would watch all
of these b movies from like the eighties and nineties,
and they would just make comments about the movies, you know,
the unbelievable parts of it, the poorly shot parts of it,

(02:22):
or whatever.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
That's what it was. Comedy Central.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
That's what Twitter used to be, like, right, We're all
sitting around watching the same game and making funny comments.
Now it's you know, it's not real world. It's way
too far left or way too far right, and everything's negative,
full of bots, full of ads and whatever. But last
night was a shared experience, and if your experiences hadn't

(02:46):
watch it, dude, just because I'm not that into baseball,
that's okay. But I fell asleep last night. I fell
asleep twice and missed it. I mean, and I've missed
several things. I really missed two things in my lifetime

(03:10):
that I'm I don't know if I'm bitter about, but
I definitely readiicent about.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
I want to say. It was nineteen.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Ninety six USC Ucla. Cad McCown was the quarterback of UCLA.
They were down big heading into the fourth quarter and
they scored like I'm going to say, like four touchdowns
in the fourth quarter. My sister is was alum of UCLA.
She was a former UCLA cheerleader, so we'd been a

(03:39):
ton of UCLA games. My brother was a UCLA alum.
My whole family we used to go to this game
all the time. And this was my year back in
southern California after Notre Dame, before Oklham State, go to
the game. UCLA is getting blown out. At the end
of the third quarter, We're like, that's it, We're out.
Rose Bulls a trap to get out of. And I

(04:00):
remember hearing aroar as we got to our crowd and thinking,
ah sc scored again. Couldn't turn on the radio the
whole way, didn't want to know anything about it. Got home,
turned on the TV and UCLA came back and won.
And then the Iron Bowl where you had to kick
six I'm going to say that was two thousand and twelve.

(04:21):
A buddy of mine named Mike Harriston, who's a big
donor at Auburn, has invited me for years to come
to the game twenty thirteen. Thank you twenty thirteen for
years to come to the game. And he took a
picture which I still have somewhere in my camera roll
of he has a suite and there's.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Eight sweet tickets.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Seven of the stubs are used, one stub is not,
and he's like, hey missed you, buddy, And I did.
It was I had a game on a Sunday and
I had to choice to leave on Friday for the
game and go to Auburn and then you know, drive
to Atlanta and fly Out, and I instead chose and
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Bitter about right.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
My kids were little to hang out my kids for
a day. And then I watched the game in the airport.
But I remember watching the kick six right before I
boarded my flight, thinking I should have been in Auburn,
Alabama last night. I'm watching the game.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I had the the.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
What's it called the view with the two two screens
up chase two, Uh huh multiview. I had the multiview
going and I was slipping back and forth with the sound.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
We had a recruit in town, so we went down
to Texas Roadhouse.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Got us a big old stake again. Both the games
are on. We're right in the bar area. It's awesome
listening to the game. Get home, watch the game, talking
to friends, and like the tenth inning. I just I
could not keep my eyes open. It was a long day,
a lot of travel that the previous day. In that day,
and I just we had two practices, we got an exhibition,

(05:54):
get a game coming up next week. I just I
fell asleep and then I woke up and I thought
it was the replay of the game.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I didn't.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
That's exactly what I thought it was the replay of
the game, because I woke up and I think it
was like two hours. I felt like it was two
hours later and the game was still on. And if
you watch games on YouTube on YouTube TV, you know
that they it just replays games constantly, constantly on some
of those random channels that they have there. So I

(06:27):
just thought that's what it was, and I watched it.
I open up my eyes and it was five to five,
and I'm like, this is the same game. I fell
asleep too, and then I fell back asleep, and then
I woke up this morning or really early this morning,
and I realized, wait, hold on, what happened.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I totally missed it. Totally missed it.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
So you have show Hazes incredible night on base nine times,
all nine times he.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Went up to play up to the play.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
You have Fred Freeman for the second consecutive year, being
a hero in the postseason.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
You have the Dodgers bullpen doing something that I don't
think Jay stew thought they were ever capable of, which is,
you know, holding things together, waiting for offense, even had
Kershaw come in and get it out.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Right, they just just get us out and he got
him got him an out.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
You have Toronto and obviously Springer that that one's gonna
that that potentially hurts them, But so many of the
substitutions they made to try and win the game end
up lasting their lineup, uh later on the game in
terms of their competitiveness and ability to put put a
run on the board. And then you have Show Show

(07:44):
he is going to pitch tonight after you know, four
for four with five walks and all that energy expended.
The whole thing is crazy. So here's what I want
to do, the shared experience. Let me start dan Byer
with you. You have you have a son family. You
strike me as somebody that goes to bed earlier than

(08:05):
me and Jason Stewart does. I could be completely wrong.
You don't strike me as a super night owl like
I am. What was your experience with the game.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Last night, Doug, you are wrong. I think I stay
up way longer than Jason Stewart does. Is that? Can
you confirm that? Jason?

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Absolutely, yeah, day night owl. I am.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
We're getting your rundowns at like midnight sometimes that's true.
I do, yes, I do stay up late final draft.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
So, uh, my viewing experience was this, watched, flipped back
and forth, watched more of a Monday night game. Actually
took in some of the Manning cast last night. I
hadn't been doing that lately but did last night. Flipped
around back and forth, Chiefs Commanders ends, probably seventh inning,
so seventh inning on. I'm locked into baseball until I
have to do our I Want Your Flex podcast. But

(08:52):
I still had it on as Mike Harmon and our
executive producer Ian Roddy recorded that. And it was in
the last segment that Freddy Freeman hit the last segment
that we were recording that Freddy Freeman hit the walk
off shot in the eighteenth So yeah, I was I
was up. I probably didn't go to bed untill like
quarter to two last night.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
All right, Sam, what was your experience?

Speaker 4 (09:15):
I feel like I spent the majority of my emotional
or I burned the majority of my emotional wick or
candle during you know the the set? Was it the
seventh inning when show Hey tied it up and then
like you know, you're that.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Was as exciting and I'm not. I want to make
sure this is clear. I like the Dodgers, I consider myself.
I mean, like you're a SoCal guy. I'm again I
locked in with the Angels, but I've always liked the Dodgers.
Gone to World Series games with the Dodgers. Dodgers team
is the best place I've ever been to see a
baseball game. But I was I was so excited with

(09:54):
the seventh inning that it really did. I agree with you.
What'd you say, you burned your emotional wick. That's amazing.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
So yeah, like the the mia I was spent by
you know. Yeah, so then the ninth inning, and then
we go the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, By the fourteenth, fifteenth,
I'm just like, oh man, at this point, just somebody
win it. Please, I'm exhausted. I didn't even really care
who was gonna win. At that point. I'm like, just
end it, just end it. Credit to Dodger fans, most
most of them stuck around and they went wild at

(10:23):
the end of that. But yeah, i'd say that between
like the you know, the fifth through the ninth inning
was really tense. Uh burned, yeah, burned the emotional wick
and uh uh you know.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Just so you're up, I was watching it the whole time, watch.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
The whole time I was making dinner. I was even
like vacuuming. At one point, I was just doing different things.
I ate dinner, I laid there, I went on the computer,
and just inning after inning, draw after draw, stalemate after stalemate,
and then Freddy finally ends it, and You're just like,
thank you, Lord Jesus.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
All right, Jay Stu, what was last night like?

Speaker 5 (10:57):
This was like a liberal love for me. I'm gonna
say it. This is I rarely am serious, but I'm
going to be dead serious here. I had just raw emotions.
I had tears in my eyes at quarter to midnight
last night. One of the greatest things I have ever
witnessed since I've been in the business, but even in
my lifetime, and I remember Kurt Gibson, it was like, again,

(11:22):
this experience that I'm about to share with you is
a complete labor of love. Because how many people at
the game last night, or watching the game last night
get to go on the radio the next day and
talk about your team and one of the greatest experiences
you've ever had. And where do you want to start? Like,

(11:43):
where do you want to start? How many storylines do
you want to follow? You have the show, Hey o,
Tawny's story, you have the Freddie Freeman story. Those are
the headlines. You have the bullpen story, that superstar will
climb introduce himself to the world last night. Of the
Tommy Edmund redemption story. He made a horrible error in

(12:04):
the second or third inning and spent the entire rest
of the eighteen innings making up for that. He was
a part of the relay throw home that saved the game.
He was a part of the throw from from second
base to get what's his face at third base to
save the inn.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
What about that little scoop just the first base, you know,
the little dribbler like that was? That was That was
one of those where you think of it as like
a hot dogging play, you know, where you don't touch,
you use your hand. But he actually needed it for
that play, and he scoops it up and throws it
the first and again saves another run.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
And that's where the story wines crossed, because that was
Kershaw's story. Kershaw came in for one pitch, when one batter,
he threw ball four twice. He threw ball four twice
to Lucas. Lucas swings at ball four that almost was
in the dirt. Tommy Edmund comes in, scoops it up

(12:59):
and throws to first. Everybody who was watching that, who
has been invested in the Dodgers all of Kershaw's career,
was Ellen Kershaw in that moment. And if you've seen
the replay, she was going to lose it. I think
she was about to have a heart attack, and all
Dodger fans were feeling the same thing. The roller coaster

(13:21):
of last night is so hard to put into words.
I was so pissed at Mookie Betts for eighteen innings
of a game. That's almost two games. I spent pissed
off at Mookie Betts, just seething at him. And I'm
still mad at him. But it doesn't it's not as
as my feelings about him do not overcompensate for just

(13:41):
the pure feeling of joy. The video that we saw
last night. I put it on my social media. You've
seen it. Somebody got a video of Yama Mato, who
who volunteered to pitch in the nineteenth inning, if it's
gonna if it was gonna go, they got it just
through the complete game, voluntar here to pitch in the
in the nineteenth and eight. He was gonna give us

(14:03):
nine innings last night. You see the video of him
and all the guys in the bullpen, including his interpreter,
and it's like pure genuine glee. And then they went
to embrace show hey like midfield, and I'm thinking, this
is what eight year olds do in Little League. I
was just so overcome with emotion watching the videos from

(14:26):
last night, just pure unadult rated glee. I was so happy.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
All right, let me give you, let me give you
a couple of thoughts. Heres Doug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Feel free to share, yes, your thoughts
in watching that baseball game. And if you didn't watch
the baseball it's okay, it's all. It's all part of
the story because you're gonna be the guy. But like
I didn't watch, well, whatever it was, it was an
amazing sporting event.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Two parts.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
One, I don't have to not sound harsh. This is
that's what college basketball coaches talk about all the time.
This is why we recruit foreign players because they just
are easier and they seem to be wired better, like
we screw up the wiring. And again I'm using this

(15:17):
as the basketball analogy to baseball, which is different and
there's different parts of the world that play baseball, celebrate
believe in baseball differently, right, But the way in which
if you listen to Show Hayes interview after the game
where they asked them all these things, like all he
wants to do is win, and he wants to go

(15:37):
home and get to sleep so they can wake up
and win the next day.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Right now.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Again, the cynic says, well, that's easy when you got
seven hundred million dollars coming into you over the next
twenty years. But no, that's really how he's wired. It's
just different. There isn't the entitlement of the American or
maybe even the Latin player. It's just not very very different.
And you know, it's like when you watch American baseball

(16:03):
players or Latin baseball players, there's one thing that I
would say over fifty percent of them have some ridiculous
chain on when they play. You ever noticed Japanese players
don't have that. You ever notice that they just said
they're they're playing baseball to play baseball. That's what they do.
And the reason that so many American coach like myself,
like we had a kid in last night from Serbia

(16:25):
and we have three Serbians on our team, and you know,
we had two Israelis last year in AUSTRALIANKI and they're
just wired differently. They're wired to like, hey, I just
want to go out and like the Aussie's, I want
to go play ball and then have.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
A beer afterwards. Like that's really it.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
So the first thing is, like, I do think there's
a purity to the Japanese star that doesn't have doesn't
have the entitlement. Doesn't mean all American players are entitled,
doesn't even mean most of them are entitled, but I
am blown away by the lack of entitlement from the japaneslayer. Secondly,

(17:03):
there is something that I don't think gets discussed, and
I gotta be honest with you, I didn't listen to
a ton of Joe Davis and John Smoltz, even though
I love John Smoltz eighteen innings nine innings of extra
inning ball when in the regular season extra inning play
is completely different. Right when you get to the tenth

(17:26):
inning in the regular season, there's a guy on second
base to start every inning, so it's a completely different
way of playing. Preparing, obviously your defense is more. But
something that Sam said is at some point I just
wanted to get over. That's how regular season baseball is, right,
regular season baseball, they put a guy at second base
because everybody's like, we're good here, let's a rap, let's

(17:48):
get this thing going. But it's there's no real preparation
for when you play one hundred and sixty two games
with one set of rules, and then you play the
playoffs and there's a different set of rules. And you
can say, well, it's the same set of rules you
play at the first nine in dings, but we all
know that it's not because the amount of pressure and
and and the adjustments that are made are completely different,

(18:12):
or maybe they're much just on peak in comparison to others.
So there's lots of takeaways to be had. I agree
with John Sneyder. I would ever pitch to show Io
Todi ever, And yeah, it's a bad watch, but you
know what, if you can do it, you do it.
Rule number one in coaching take away what the other

(18:33):
team does best? Period stop. And I'm blown away by
the lack of entitlement of the Japanese player. And I
find it really interesting that What's gonna go down as
historically one of the greatest games ever played in World
Series history, there was not the level of prep prepparedness
for it because the regular season rules are different.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
In extrated play.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Give us some of your thoughts at Gottlieb Show, Twitter
at Gottlieb Show inste as well. For forty years, Tyrek
has been helping customers find the right tires for how what,
where they drive, Ship Past and Freedom back by freebroad

for our Tyreck play the day.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
I think you know what it's going to be.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
It's from AM five seventy LA LA Sports, Dodgers Radio Network.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Full count on Freeman, Little Delivers Freeman.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
It's one high in the air, straight away center field, Farsho.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
At the walk, Freddie Freeman, Mister World Series hands the
marathon at midnight.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
I mean amazing right midnight, three to two count, bottom
of the eighteenth inning in the same stadium that Kirk
Gibson hit the home run Freddie Freeman. Another year, another
heroic moment.

Speaker 7 (19:56):
This is the best of the Doun dot Leaf Show
on Fox Sports.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
It's a dog gott Leave Show, Fox Sports.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
Radio, and we're so happy to be joined by Matt Holliday.
Of course, seven time All Star former, he's a World
Series champion with the Saint Louis Cardinals, and of course
he's a frequent member here, friend of the program, did
you watch all eighteen innings?

Speaker 8 (20:25):
So Ethan and I were on the couch, as you know,
I'm sure you can picture this scenario. I'm sure both
of you and Jason, your producer, can picture the scenario
of Ethan and I sitting on the couch in the
sixteenth I hadn't had a shower yet. I played pickle
ball earlier in the afternoon, and after the sixteenth inning,
I think both of them Meeta the orders had just hit.

(20:47):
Maybe I could be wrong. I said, you know what,
I'm going to shower and then I'll watch the rest
of the game in bed, and he said same. So
I went and took a quick shower, got in bed,
was watching, of course, the first commercial that it goes to,
I'm out and I wake up and I see them

(21:08):
interviewing show. Hey, so I knew the Dodgers won, and
then kind of obviously checked out what happened this morning
when I woke up. So I made sixteen of them,
probably seventeen, I would say, but missed the end.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Okay, So here was mine.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
I was on the phone and I fell asleep in
like the tenth or eleventh inning, and then I woke
up and it was like the twelfth inning, and then
I was like, okay, I'm stay awake.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
I'm gonna stay awake. Ms, stay awake.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Then I think the start of the fourteenth I passed
out again, and then I woke up in the middle
of the night and I thought it was I don't
know if it was the middle of night or what
it was, but I felt like I was watching postgame stuff.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
Again.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
It was like I kind of thought it was a dream.
And then I turned off the TV and woke up
and I was like, wait, what did I watch? Who won?

Speaker 2 (22:06):
I don't even remember?

Speaker 1 (22:07):
And I turned on and then I see Freddie Freeman
UH and his big white chompers out when when the
win the game. So it's kind of the whole thing
was surreal. Let's let's start with uh. Let's start with
Shoho tani, which is which was a greater game the
ten strikeouts three home runs in an elimination game or

(22:32):
four for four five walks. Again, hasn't done it with
throwing the ball. But like that game was so pressure packed.
I don't know which which to you was more impactful.
A game that was where they eliminated an opponent, you know,
but there wasn't the pressure or last night.

Speaker 8 (22:51):
Well, I think Game three of the World Series is
huge obviously, you know, in a one to one series, to
win Game three at home and now they have a
chance to close out the World Series if they win
the next two at home and not have to go
back to Toronto, I think that magnifies the game last
night for him. And getting on base nine times, and

(23:14):
after the four or four I think after the second
home run we could have just you know, I think
it was safe to say that the rest of the
time he was not going to get a chance to hit.
So getting on base nine times in a Game three
of a World Series, I think he's up there. I mean,
it's got to be close, but I gosh, when you're

(23:35):
the pitcher, it's almost like this crazy little league kid
who's like thirteen, almost like Danny al Monte. If anybody
remembers that going back where it's just like the bigger,
better kids strikes out everyone and he hits three homers
and he's just the better player and looks like he
belongs in a different league, like it was like Showhy
was waiting to get called up to whatever the next
league is. I still think if he's striking out and

(24:00):
in the playoffs and you pitch six ingles, struck out
ten guys, and you hit three home runs, I just
don't know that there's a way that you can beat
that outside of if he does it tonight, when he
pitches tonight and he hit he hits a couple homers
and pitches six or seven innings in a in a
World Series game, I guess that would top it. But
I think you just I mean, Gottley, when you when

(24:23):
you pitch the game and you dominate the game on offense,
it's just it's just stuff you never see. Like last night,
you could, you know, I think you could have seen
Bonds do something like that. You know, maybewhere he hit
two hommers and got intentially walked four, five, six times.
But to see a guy pitch and dominate and then
also hit three hummers, I just don't know that we'll

(24:44):
ever see it.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
Yeah, No, I mean, he's you and I have talked
about his best player ever and then and then when
you say it, people are like, no, well there was
then you watched last night, like it's pretty hard to
make the argument. And then of course he pitches today.
The thing about Freddye and this is what I learned
in watching baseball with you and E and Jackson on
that exact same couch is how much like exit you guys,

(25:09):
how into exit vlo you are right? And and last
night watching Freddie, it was like he had three or
four that were rockets that were out. They were like, yeah,
he's hitting he's seeing it and hitting it well even
off lefties. Was that is that foreshadowing?

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Like?

Speaker 1 (25:25):
Is that how it works as a hitter where you're
seeing it and hitting well and it's just a matter
of time or is every at bat different into itself?

Speaker 8 (25:33):
No, I think it's certainly when you're when you're in
a good spot and your body's moving right and your
swing feels good, and even though you're making outs, you're
swinging with the right pitches and you're hitting it hard. Uh,
you don't lose confidence. There's the mental space of of
something good is going to happen. And this at that
is very strong because you can't control where you hit it,

(25:55):
and a lot of times and the outcome is uh
is not. You can't let your your your your confidence
and and and how you feel about what you're doing
in the box, you know, right, the outcomes and so
it's certainly I think was foreshadowing that he was going
to have a good at bat. Now I'm not going
to say that, you know, yeah, he's gonna get a

(26:16):
game winning home run, but having been in so many
of those situations and come through, UH, there's a confidence level,
there's a there's a can do attitude that I certainly
can end this with one swing that he has. I
think he does such an amazing job of controlling his
his swing too. He never looks like he's over swinging

(26:39):
or or swinging for a home run or or gets
outside of his approach like he's he's a very even keel,
level headed, and I think that that, you know, I mean,
obviously the proof is in the putting of how much
success he's had in the postseason, of just how slow
his heartbeat is and and he doesn't try to do
too much where in a lot of those games you
start and in there you're like, Okay, I'm gonna end

(27:02):
this thing with a homer, and and it kind of
can change your mechanics. It can. It can get you
a little lot of whack and you start chasing, you know,
balls and swinging at pitches that are out of the zone.
And but he never seems to get sped up. And
you know, for him to to hit another game winning
home run in a huge spot obviously in the World Series,

(27:26):
I think it just goes to show you what, you know,
he's just he's been an amazing hitter his whole career.
I mean, he's really never changed his stance. He's never
really looked any different in his approach. He's always relied
on using the big part of the field. So just
like I said, ever since I saw him, you know,
as a young hitter. Now it's it's very, very very

(27:47):
similar where some guys kind of go through ebbs and
flows of changing some things and their stance, or you know,
they get a little bit older, they have to do
some different things. But he has been pretty much the
same since the day he stepped put it on major
league field.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
Jay, he had a question, Matt quickly, you have protected
great hitters I'm sure many people have tried to protect
you in the lineup. When you see John Schneider after
the game after having just basically intentionally walked Mookie Bets,
I mean Shohiltani for the last five at bats of
the game and for Mookie to come up every time

(28:24):
and not do anything. I think John Schneider was empowered
after the game and saying, yeah, we're just gonna keep
on doing this. How personally should Mookie Betts take that?
Like you've been in this position, like when you hear
the manager say we're just going to keep intentionally walking
the guy in front of me, what does that say
to you?

Speaker 8 (28:43):
Well, first of all, I mean I think Mookie's like
the rest of us. I mean I think he's in
awe of show, like he's no one. It's like the
year I hit behind Albert, or a couple of years
that I hit behind Albert, Like I was in awe
of how good of a bats he had, over and
over and over and over and over and over and over.
And so I think you expect it, like you know,

(29:03):
it's part of it. Yeah, I mean I think you
take it a little bit personal. But like, look, I
think Mookie would walk Show hate to face himself as well,
Like I look, I mean, I think if you look
at it right now, the way that Show has swinging
the bat and his ability to hit the ball out
all over the park, and then you look at you know,
like I said, MOOKI is a m VP caliber player

(29:26):
and this hasn't been his best season, although I have
been incredibly impressed defensively with how well he plays shortstop.
That's a whole another topic. But yeah, I look, I
think you know Mookie's I think all major league players
there's there's you take. You take a lot of pride
and and how you how you play the game. And

(29:47):
for him specifically, he's an incredible player, All Star annually,
and and so I think he knows it's coming at
this point. And and so I think certain players deal
with it difficult differently. I think some people U do
better with a chip on their shoulder and they kind
of build up the uh, it's me against that. You know,
the manager doesn't respect me or the team doesn't respect me,

(30:07):
and I'm going to show him. And I think that
works for some guys. And I think sometimes that makes
guys and get them out of there, you know, they're
they're they're kind of locked in this if that, if
if you will to where some guys need to just go.
You know what, I'm just going to process this thing
like I have for six hundred times this year. I'm
gonna processing this this at that like I have, you know,

(30:29):
my whole career for the last ten years. It's been
an amazing career, and I need to just not worry
about it and just find a good pitch to hit
and put a good swing on it. So I don't
know him personally well enough to say how he channels
that best. He would probably I'm sure that you know,
some of the Dodgers would probably know that. But yeah,
I mean I certainly it's things your pride a little bit,

(30:52):
I think. But I look, like I said, I think
MOOKI would walk show Hey to face Nuki.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Yeah, yeah, I think so as well.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
What's that like when the guy in front of you
gets what when you're like a man like, look, you're
a great hitter. But I'm sure there was a time
which Albert got walked and you're like all right, but
you're up and you're trying to control that.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
What's that?

Speaker 1 (31:13):
What are those emotions like when you're just trying to
process and hit a baseball.

Speaker 8 (31:17):
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, there was times
in my career where it was effective to be like,
all right, you know, sucker, you know I'm gonna make
you pay. You're gonna you know, you're gonna wish you
hadn't hadn't did that. And then there was times where
you know, it was it was more cerebral where it
was like okay, you know, like I said a few

(31:39):
minutes ago, like it's it's okay, okay, you know, got
to get a good pitch, you know, just just very
process oriented. But for me the most, particularly when you
feel good about your slang, like when you're in a
good spot offensively, you're like, heck, yeah, I can't wait.
You know, I'll uh, you know, I'll take this uh

(32:00):
and I'll be the guy you know for the team,
and and and and and so that's a good feeling
when you when you when you have that confidence. I think,
you know, nine, I got traded over. I had probably
like two of the better months in my career after
I got traded h to the Cardinals, and when they
were walking him, I was I was really producing really well,
and it was fun. I mean I was like, I,
you know, I look forward to the times when you

(32:22):
know they were walking him and and you know, putting
another guy on base. So yeah, I mean it just
kind of depends on I think how you feel at
the time with where you're at, you know, with your
swing and your confidence.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
Matt Hollidays our guest.

Speaker 1 (32:37):
You're on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio,
the seven time All Star I holpe and break down
the World Series. Okay, so now you got to come
back and play another baseball game. I again, I know
it's not the same, and I don't you didn't play
game seven because you got hurt in Game six, But
what what is it like to come back and play

(32:58):
the next day after?

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Are games like this?

Speaker 3 (33:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (33:03):
I mean I think it's it's the World Series and
and you know, I don't know that there's there's much
to be said. I think you know how it's gonna
you gotta get out there and compete. Obviously fatigue. I
think certainly it's like playing two They played two games
basically one day, and I think the mental fatigue is
always a lot stronger, and and and World series games
where every play every pitch is so you know, dramatic

(33:27):
and so important that you just have to be locked
in for basically whatever six hours, seven hours, I don't
even know how long it ended up being, but you're
locked in mentally, and so I'm sure more than even
physically last night, those guys were just gassed mentally. So
it's one of those things where I think you you
try to get good sleep, you try to you know,

(33:49):
just think about, hey, all I got to play tonight
is nine innings, like, you know, just kind of reframe
it in your mind of what's trying to try to
just win nine innings tonight? And and uh, and you know,
for the Blue Jays, I think it starts on the mound.
They need they need they need him to go out
there and establish kind of a good rhythm early, give
him a couple scoreless, maybe scratch a run on show hey,

(34:11):
and then and then try to feel like you maybe
you can shift the momentum uh that that you know,
do the Dodgers have after winning that hard, hard fought game. Uh,
try to shift it quick early in the game. But
you know, a lot of the main you know, I
think three or four of the of the Blue Jays
main players, and I don't know what I assume that

(34:33):
Springer won't be able to play, but you know, a
lot of you know, I think three of their other
main players only played eight or nine of those innings.
And I think but Ship maybe even came out earlier
than that. So they have a few of their guys
that didn't didn't play all eighteen, so they may be
a little bit pressure than than some of the Dodgers
guys that did. So maybe that that is a maybe,

(34:54):
you know, some silver lining in this whole thing. But
like I said, you have to Commit's it just the
World Series? You know, there's there's uh, you can rest
in the offseason, if you have to drink an extra
cup of coffee or whatever caffeinated beverage of choice you have.
You have to keep it going. But there'll be plenty
of adrenaline I think to carry carry this game. And

(35:17):
and uh, you know, again, it's nine innings. You hope,
I mean, I guess it could be more, but you know,
I think you tell yourself, look, it's it's uh, it's
nine innings. Let's go out here and try to try
to get it get it done.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
Explain the Dodgers bullpen. They had been so flawed, yeah
this season, and then then last night you get that,
how do you and if you go that's baseball on me,
I'm gonna lose my mind, Like, how do you explain
uh this the group that has has struggled roundly and
play so well in that circumstance last night.

Speaker 8 (35:51):
Yeah, I mean, I think part of it is is
the Belie Jay has lost for their their better hitters
out of the lineup, Springer comes out, Kirk comes out,
UH Barger comes out, UH Baschet comes out, and and
so the lineup for the Blue Jays, I thought to
the last I don't know, you guys that have to

(36:13):
correct me specifically, but it felt like that second game,
the last nine innings, I felt like was was not
nearly as potent as as as they typically are. Uh
So I think that played a part into it. I
think the fact that you know, those guys all have
really good stuff. Now, they haven't always had a ton
of success, the relievers that came out of the pen

(36:36):
last night, but when you watch their pure stuff, it's
it's hard to argue, well, you know that that can't
be successful. I think those guys have the thing that
I think was really caught me off guard was the
command of the last two or three of their guys
that you know, that's really where they've gotten in trouble
is is they've walked people, and they've they've put people

(36:58):
on base and then and you know, it's it's gotten
away from him in that way. It's never been a
stuff thing, you know, as you can tell. I think
the last two guys were both throwing one hundred miles
an hour with plus off speed pitches and and you know,
locating and look like I said, baseball. You know, those

(37:20):
guys just kind of rose to the occasion. But I
do think the fact that the Blue Jays had four
of their their main best at match out of the game,
I think certainly helped.

Speaker 1 (37:32):
Matt You're the best man, uh Wi shows on the couch.
Listen to you guys talk baseball. In the meantime, we'll
just have to do on the radio. Thanks for me,
our guest.

Speaker 8 (37:40):
Yeah sounds good, See you guys.

app all the things welcome in do do do do?
I hope you're having a great day. Man, I don't know.
I don't know about you.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Guys.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
I'm gonna share something with you which I'm not actually
embarrassed about. But I think if when I say it
out loud, there will be somebody like, that's weird.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
Okay, I'll share with you one moment.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
For forty years, Tyrak's been helping customers find the right
tires for how, what and where they drive. Ship fast
and free and back by free road, has protection with
convenience sulation options like mobile tire installation, tyret dot com
the way tire buying should be. We're gonna get to
Tuesday morning quarterback in the afternoon in a second. But
I wanted to share. I have an idea for a
segment and we can actually workshop this for just a

(38:40):
couple minutes on radio. And the idea is, I don't
know if you want to call it, am I weird?
But it's like things that we actually do that maybe
you don't tell other people. But we're gonna share and
be vulnerable with each other.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
Just the four of us.

Speaker 5 (38:56):
Sounds like a guilty pleasure, guilty pleasure.

Speaker 1 (39:01):
No, no, Like, like, here's what I mean. I'm on
a sports high all day today. The Dodgers aren't my team.
I'm not gonna sit here and lie to you. I'm
an La La kid or Orange County kid, but the
Dodger on my team. I love the Dodgers. I think
they're really I think their uniforms are cool. I think
their stadium school. But I grew up next to Anheim
Stadium that I decided that was my team. But they're

(39:22):
like close enough, right. But because of that, the game
was so awesome and just the way it all went down,
and I like, I gotta stay awake, I gotta stay awake,
I fall asleep, and then you know, Freddie Free Minute's
another one, and there's there's a bunch of the Obviously
there's the Freddie thing with this with his agent a
couple of years ago. Me like, I don't, that doesn't

(39:44):
even come into my mind. What people don't know is
like Freddie is he's actually a Kid's a guy from Orange, California,
which is where I'm actually from, who went to same
high school as my brother and sister. He's donated a
bunch of money they got cool baseball facilities, Like he's a.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
That counts it great dude.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
But when you factor in that the football, the Packers
Steelers game and how that ended, I don't know what
it is. And probably obviously our season is getting ready
to get underway. Like all of those things, I've been
on a sports high. So it's like one of those
you're walking around in office and you're like kind of

(40:22):
whistling and feeling good and they're like, why are you
so happy? Like, well, generally I'm a pretty happy person,
but I'm actually on a sports high from.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
Last night's World Series game.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
That's probably weird to a lot of people, considering I
didn't go to the game. The Dodgers are on my team.
I didn't even stay up and watch the old damn thing.
But that's just how my brain is wired because I knew.
Maybe it's because I knew that when we turned on
the on button today we could only if we only
talked about the Dodger game. We want to talk about
the World Series. We'd be good. We'd be doing our jobs.
And I just have there's lots of different things spinning

(40:52):
in my head. So in the if we had a
segment today, which is am I weird? Is it weird
that I'm on a sports high for that wasn't isn't
my team a game? I didn't attend a game, I
didn't stay up and watch the entire thing for. But
I just I love postseason baseball and I love all
of the different storylines.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
Fault.

Speaker 3 (41:15):
I think you're pulling for the Dodgers, then, because I've
been in situations where I felt good about a certain
outcome of a game because of the team that I
ended up rooting for, even if they're not my favorite team.
I am always a fan of when you had the
best player to never win a major in golf. I

(41:38):
liked it when guys would win a major and then
they wouldn't be on that list anymore. I'm always a
fan of that. I think that would make me feel good.
But I'm surprised. I think it's a great time of year,
for sure. Carrie Rhoades said to me on Sunday, best
time of the year, and I argue, I said, no,
I think spring's best time of the year. But I

(42:00):
can understand why you'd be uh.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
Excited Sports Sports sequinox yesterday.

Speaker 3 (42:05):
But by the way, yeah, by the way, and by
the way, notice how once football games started to be
played again, how the NBA just kind of fell into
the background. Yes, we loved it for two days Tuesday
and Wednesday last week. All right, I'm done, all right,
moving on, We'll see you guys again at Christmas.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
See you Christmas at the road.

Speaker 3 (42:24):
Jack.

Speaker 2 (42:26):

let's get to Tuesday Morning Quarterback in the afternoon.

Speaker 7 (42:50):
Well, Tuesday, this is Tuesday Morning Quarterback in the afternoon.
Mondays can be overwhelming. Tuesdays are getting to whatever we
didn't get.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
To on Monday.

Speaker 7 (43:00):
Yeah, this is Tuesday Morning Quarterback in the Afternoon.

Speaker 1 (43:05):
For more to hot takes on things we might have missed,
let's go to our esteem producer Jason stew.

Speaker 5 (43:09):
Hey, Doug, I'll take it from here.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
Thank you, Doug.

Speaker 7 (43:12):
I'll take it from here.

Speaker 5 (43:13):
If the listeners could could go kind of like the
into their content consumption mode and be like, you know what,
I listened to a lot of sports content yesterday, watched
a lot of sports content, but there was one story
that I really wish could have been covered. Well, we've
got you covered here. One of our four entries today
are going to be that story that you wanted to

(43:35):
hear more about. And maybe it's this one. Maybe let's go,
let's go to the North Midwest. Is that what it's called?
Minnesota Vikings and their quarterback situation. We've all seen where
Carson Wentz is I think likely out for the year.
Dan Barry can correct me if I'm wrong with this
curve surgery. They're down to two quarterbacks on the roster now,
I want to say, and one of them is their

(43:58):
first round draft pick a couple of years ago, McCarthy,
and we don't even know what his playing status is.
So it made me think though about what the Vikings
story has been the last year. Sam Darnold had an
MVP season until it wasn't until the postseason last year
they decided not to extend him. Maybe they sent him

(44:21):
an extension offer, but it was declined. Aaron Rodgers made
it clear to everybody that he was holding out for
this Minnesota Vikings offer, and they seemingly said no. In
the meantime, they could have brought back Kirk Cousins, who
had lost his job with the Falcons. Who's more familiar

(44:43):
with that offense than Kirk Cousins. They've passed on all
of those, and now since they kind of put all
their eggs in one basket, this JJ McCarthy basket, now
they found themselves up the creek, you know what kind
of creek without I just wanted to talk about that, guys,
that the Vikings ultimately make the wrong move when they
didn't bring back Sam Donald and then could have had

(45:05):
a couple other guys along the way.

Speaker 1 (45:07):
I think the answer is yes, I just do. And
as you guys know, I've been the head of the
Sam Donald fan club, and you know Dan's watched every step,
so I could be wrong, but yeah, I mean, plus,
it's not just that Sam Donald showed himself to be
competent or good in the system, whatever. But I'll use
the college storyline to help you with the answer to

(45:30):
a pro question. Which is you're gonna get more out
of guys that you coached the previous year. It's just
so much easier. You don't have to reteach everything, reteaching
an entire offense. And Sam's not perfect, he wasn't good
in the playoffs, but they're not even gonna get to
the playoffs, and I think they're further away from the playoffs,

(45:52):
and like, I don't think they're gonna trade away Justin Jefferson,
But there's a legit conversation to be had sitting there
going like, are we really gonna have Justin Jefferson and
and have JJ McCarthy out there that those two things
don't make sense. You're gonna waste and frustrate Justin Jefferson.
So I think they made a mistake.

Speaker 3 (46:09):
I think it even goes back further because when they
had Kirk Cousins, they were trying to find cousins replacement,
and if you remember, and this just stood out like
a sore thumb, they had Jaren Hall, who was a
fifth round pick from BYU, started a game against the Falcons,
got knocked out. They then went to a bit of
a quarterback roulette and ended up going back to Jaron

(46:35):
Hall when they needed a must win game against Green
Bay late in the season, Packers kicked the crap out
of them, and so then it started because that was
the message, like, we want Jared Hall to win this job,
so we don't have to bring back Kirk Cousins. We
are trying everything that we can to show that we
don't want to bring back Kirk Cousins, and they ultimately

(46:55):
didn't off of that Achilles injury, they just didn't want
to back. And up until the point of the Achilles injury,
he's playing pretty well, but then it started the dominoes
of JJ McCarthy. By the way, Sam Donald is still
Sam Donald. Last week Week seven turned the ball over
a bunch of times, a couple of interceptions, fumble in
the end zone. So while he's been great and has

(47:15):
looked like an MVP at times, Sam Donald's warts were
still what they were. Vikings probably would have been better
off though with him at the as their quarterback. So
I get that point. Yeah, it's an absolute mess their
front office is. I've seen some Vikings tweets as well
about the awful decisions that they've had in the draft
under Quasia Dolpha Menso's a mess. Yeah, sure is a mess.

(47:41):
I want to talk about a different quarterback, Justin Herbert.
Doug just a little while ago put him atop his
MVP candidacy. You know what I'm gonna say about Justin Herbert.
Look out. You know what we've seen a lot of
Justin Herbert lately at media events, are at sporting events

(48:03):
with his new girlfriend. This is not Justin Herbert esque.
Justin Herbert is a shy guy and now he's dating
Madison Beer. Woh pop star? From what the uh the
titles tell Me and Sports Katia quoted her from an

(48:25):
interview that she did that was posted yesterday after speaking
with Serious XM's TikTok Radio with Davis Burlison Harding. Well,
this is what Madison Beer said. My ideal night is
literally just going in the jacuzzi with my friends. I
don't like leaving my house. I am such a homebody.

(48:48):
My ideal night isn't a night out. I like to
go to dinner, but not partying. I am too socially aware,
always thinking, oh my god, everyone's here, Well, who's at
the Laker game? Over the weekend? Sitting core side Justin
Herbert and Madison Beer who was at the Dodger game
last night, Justin Herbert Madison Beer. When we did your

(49:09):
training camp tour, Doug and we went to Orange County
and went to the complex wherever it is, Justin Herbert
snuck out Jack Hammond, That's what it was. I thought
it was Hammond something. Justin Herbert snuck out behind us
so he didn't have to deal with the crush of

(49:32):
fans wanting his autograph. Remember that snuck out, just kind
of like walked behind and left. And that's okay. Maybe
he signed on other days. But now for Justin Herbert
to be at these publicly public place places being shown
on camera and not having his girlfriend saying I'd rather
be at home, something's not right. Something is very fishy,

(49:55):
because I doubt it's Justin Herbert saying, come on, babe,
let's go to Little Lakers game. Come on, babe, let's
let's go to the Dodgers game. Let's go to the
World Series. Let's go. There's no way that's happening.

Speaker 5 (50:06):
You're saying there's some kind of a brand manager who's
trying to maybe work on his branding for for further
endorsements and whatnot.

Speaker 3 (50:14):
I am putting it all out on the table. I
don't know if I don't believe a word that she
said in this because to this interview.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
Oh, she's the Yoko, She's the Yoko of the la.

Speaker 3 (50:25):
Yes, there you go. That's what I'm like. Beware, if
things go south, beer will remember this point.

Speaker 5 (50:32):
And I know what the headline is going to be.
Is justin Herbert drinking too much of Madison's beer.

Speaker 3 (50:40):
I would say, too much beer not a good thing,
So dandy.

Speaker 2 (50:45):
You find a lot of people to argue with that
where I live. I just want to point that out.

Speaker 4 (50:48):
Do you think that this negatively or positively affects his play?

Speaker 1 (50:52):
He's saying negative, He's saying he's stepping out being somebody's
not instead of just being a football player.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
Didn't you guys? Isn't that weird? Like just her He's
been in the sas for five years.

Speaker 1 (51:01):
It is it is, I will I will only say
this Dan, and I do hear you, And I don't
think what you're saying is in any way crazy. There
are some special circumstances, right, and part of it is that.
And I wouldn't be spiced to The Chargers themselves also
push this right, they're trying to be l A.

Speaker 2 (51:22):
We are l A.

Speaker 1 (51:23):
They move to l A or whatever. But he does
have the week off. They played on a Thursday. They
got the This is like the greatest schedule you can
get in the NFL, where before the bye week they
have a they have a mini bye week because they
played in Thursday. And I mean, are you gonna turn
down courtside the Lakers? Are you gonna are you gonna
turn down row?

Speaker 3 (51:43):
One would series that Justin Herbert could get court side
at the Lakers game anytime he wanted over the past.

Speaker 1 (51:49):
Right, But but now he's but now he's got a
Now he's got a girlfriend, and now he's got he's
got a week and a half off in the middle
of the season, and he's not traveling places.

Speaker 2 (51:58):
Right, It's not traveling.

Speaker 3 (51:59):
Place maybe kind of a show.

Speaker 2 (52:00):
It's not like he's it's not like he's doing the That's.

Speaker 3 (52:03):
What the benefit of the doubt I am.

Speaker 1 (52:05):
I give lots of bil benefit of the doubt, I understand.
I'm just saying, like, if he starts popping up at
the Clipper games and then you know he's he's on
TMZ and he's doing all kinds of other things.

Speaker 3 (52:16):
You like Galaxy game. There's justin Herbert.

Speaker 1 (52:19):
Like he's banging the drum at the l A f
C games or whatever. You know, he ends up at
the USC or he flies up to Oregon. Does Oregon play?
Is that a big game this week or next week?

Speaker 7 (52:29):
Now?

Speaker 3 (52:29):
They're off with in the Hawkeyes all Iowa at Iowa City. Yeah,
if he's in Iowa City next week game.

Speaker 2 (52:34):
Yeah, if he's at Iowa City next week, see him
in the crowd.

Speaker 3 (52:36):
You're like, yo, yo, focus on the grid iron, not
the one in the city.

Speaker 1 (52:42):
Okay, No, I haven't even given mine yet. Tuesday Morning Quarterback.

Speaker 3 (52:50):
Well, he kind of took up your time, Doug by
doing guilty pleasures with Doug Gottlieb. Yeah, Doug, it's ten
sixteen in the morning in Hawaii.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (53:00):
Well, I mean I watched Caleb Williams play and the
only time he looked really, really good was on the
first opening drive, which was like when they ran into
fifteen plays.

Speaker 2 (53:11):
It was it was a mess. And and the.

Speaker 1 (53:15):
Ravens, Yes Snoop hunt is super Huntley was good, but
like the story with the Ravens is, their defense hasn't
been particularly good and I just, yeah, I just I
I'm waiting to see it. With Kayleb Williams. They got
they got a false start on that first drive. That's
why they got a field goal and not a touchdown.
It felt like they that really destroyed the rhythm as

(53:36):
first and goal and they got a fall start. But
there's there's just something missing there that I can't put
my finger on. With Caleb Williams, he's fine. I think
the play calling is really good. They they do some
different stuff that I haven't seen other people do, but
I don't. Yeah, I watched that whole Ravens game and

(53:58):
I was disappointed.

Speaker 2 (53:59):
With Kayla Williams.

Speaker 8 (54:00):
HM.

Speaker 1 (54:01):
That's Tuesday Morning Quarterback, the afternoon Tuesday, Tuesday.

Speaker 7 (54:05):
Here you have it your Tuesday Morning Quarterback in

Speaker 2 (54:08):
