after I tell you that shortly after the show. Our

Let's do wherever you want. Lebron James is a podcast.
This is what he said on it on the Mind
That Game podcast about youth sports.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Ran track and field as well, and we were like
super duper young you know, we played football all the
way American football all the way through high school. We
didn't just cap it at one thing and just did
one thing all year round. And I think a lot
of kids burn They burned out? Do you just telling them, dude,
just okay, I'm gonna just do this one all year round.
I'm just playing basketball, or just play volleyball, or just
(01:19):
play soccer.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
All year round.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
You burn out, you know at twenty two, twenty three,
twenty four, you know, because you've just been doing it.
Are young? Yeah, thirteen the city starts, you know, they done.
I don't even want to play no more.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I mean,
did my son's gone through that with basketball? Just there's
got to be more life than just just hoop. And
he did play all those sports kind of growing up.
But you know, everybody said, you know, you got to
kind of specialize whenever. I think there's it's a hard one,
(01:59):
right because it's not fomo, but there's a reality too.
If you're not working on it, does it help you
in that sport? And guys are going to be better
if that's all that they do. I think a lot
of it comes to the high school coaches because the
high school coaches they don't mandate it, but they sort
of mandate it. But it's also how the high school
(02:22):
seasons and schedule comes out. I was a baseball player
and a football player growing up as well as a
basketball player. Got to the high school, there's no way
you can do football and basketball just not really possible.
And there's definitely and basketball into baseball. I remember my
freshman year, and part of this is southern California. But
baseball starts like feb one, right, and the playoffs and
(02:45):
basketball go until March. So by the time you come
out for baseball, even if and I was making several
baseball practices a week, but by the time you come out,
like people already have their positions that already kind of set,
and I wasn't good enough to come out and play.
So you're you know, spot, you know, spot inning, spot
at bats. And then you get to the point like
(03:07):
what am I doing this for. I'm not that good
at it and I'm not getting the opportunity to be
that good at it. So let's just focus on basketball
because with every practice I'm missing an opportunity to be
good at basketball. Do I think playing all those sports important?
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yes? I do.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Do.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
I think it's good for your body. I do.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
I think soccer is great for people to play all
growing up. Unbelievable for your agility. It's a physical sport
to teach you spacing, you know you, it's there's obviously
a great conditioning element to it. There's two types of conditioning.
It's not just about being able to run around for
a long time because you run slow. Then you it's
start and stop like like basketball, like football in terms
(03:51):
of speed and explosiveness. There's contact to it. There's a
lot of great things to it. What what screws it
up is that you can literally play them year round
anywhere now and just because you can, mean some do
and they get ahead by playing that sport more often,
and then the high school coach mandates it, and then
(04:11):
you kind of gotta do it anyway. But I would
also tell you that it's like, hey, here's the issue
with Lebron. Okay, So Lebron talks about what he did
growing up and how it worked for him. Lebron's raised
two sons. I don't know if Bryce did, I don't
(04:33):
know if Bronni did. But I don't remember seeing any
video of them playing football or playing them playing baseball
or tennis or pickleball or anything.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
They just played basketball.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
So you are a dad and he acts like and
I think he does a really good job being as
good a dad as he can possibly be, So why
not make your sons play those other sports?
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Why not?
Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Introduce him for his what he did in music, what
he's done in movies, or just as a as a personality.
Everyone knows who ice Cube is, and everyone knows the
Big Three, and the Big Three is back. It starts
June fourteenth in Chicago at Allstein Arena, live on CBS
(05:17):
and Vice TV. The One and only Ice Cube kind
of have to spend some time with us.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Cube. How are you hey?
Speaker 5 (05:21):
What's up, Doug?
Speaker 6 (05:22):
How you doing?
Speaker 3 (05:23):
I'm good, bro.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
What's it like like you've been as ingrained with these
big name NBA players, going back to when you're making
movies and producing music and recording music. Now obviously so
many of them playing for you, but we have an
NBA Finals that's kind of devoid of those big traditional names.
What's it like for you, as such a big basketball
fan to watch the finals with so many new faces?
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Well, you know, I love basketball, So it's not really
for me about your your name as much of you
as it is about your game, so you know the
best players that could do it. I guess these are
champions this year.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, but I can even tell in the sound of
your voice. There's like a disappointment there, right, Like, I
get's great. I'd still rather watch the dudes that I've
watched the last twenty years do it.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
Without a doubt. You know, the finals, expect to see,
you know, a star studied event. Now you just got
to wait to the Big Three stars. You't forteen to
see a star studied event.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Yeah, that was kind of my point, which is, it's
crazy the names that you're able to get to play
in the Big Three.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
What's it like?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
It feels like again outsider looking in, it feels like, now,
are you guys asking as much or more selecting?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
By that?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
I mean, you know, do you get are you to
the point where too many of the former stars want
to play and you get to select who's going to play?
Speaker 6 (06:57):
Well, you know, we still ask the you know, the superstars,
because you never know what they want to do. Some
of them are really done. Some of them when they
when they're done in basketball, their basketball, it's you satisfied.
And then you got some who still want to play.
(07:17):
Some guys they need one hundred million to play. Some
guys will play if you throw the ball out there
with enough people. So you just got to figure out
where the hunger's at. You know, we always say it
ain't about your name, it's about your game, and you
got to bring your game because your name is not
going to last.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
In the Big Three, no question.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
But you do ask some huge names, right Dwight, Howard, Kemba,
more Ready, Land Stephenson, Wes Johnson, montrezl Harrald. Who are
you most excited to see in the league this year?
Speaker 6 (07:53):
Dwight for sure, Lance, you know Montrez see how they do.
But I'm also Michael Beesy's the MVP, Joe Johnson three
time MVP. So you know, we got some formidable players
that's been proven in this style of basketball, and so
(08:18):
I can't wait to see him clash on June fourteenth.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
It is crazy, like I'm forty nine and Joe Johnson
used to come to our games at Oklahoma State when
he was being recruited and he's still getting buckets, still
getting buckets in his forties in terms of legendary bucket getters.
He got my mood up.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Du rouv.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
You got Joe Johnson, and you talk about Michael Beasley
in your mind, who's the best bucket getter in Big
Three history?
Speaker 6 (08:49):
Wow? I would have to say Joe Johnson. Yeah, this
is tough. You know, they don't call him my sho
Joe for nothing. And you know what's great about our
style of play? You know, guys who've honed their skills
and who have every trick in the book to get
(09:14):
a bucket, you know, have a place to play. You know,
these guys can't play eighty two games no more. They
can't go back to back. They can't do three games
in fort nine. Some of them can, but you know
most of them, you know, first to fifty win. You know,
(09:35):
it's light there on the NBA court.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
You know, you guys have been doing this for a minute.
And obviously you've talked about how many have tried to
take down the league, right and you went public and
talked about how the NBA didn't want you guys to succeed.
What is it like to continue to build on this
league year after year when there's so much competition and
somebody who have tried to take shots at this.
Speaker 6 (09:59):
Leg and I'm used to being in this position, even
with music, even with movies with you know, Q Vision
or movie Company. You know, we've always had to prove
ourselves in a new space. So I feel right at
home right here. I wish it wasn't like that. It
(10:23):
don't have to be like that. I think we're very
complimentary to the NBA, but uh, you know, we don't
need them to succeed, as you can see. And uh,
now you know the sports world is starting to realize it.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
No, they are, they are starting to realize it, right,
So why do you think in your mind? Why do
you think that people don't want to see you succeed
with this lake?
Speaker 6 (10:52):
I don't know. You got to ask them because it
don't make crazy Man sense. Uh you know, if he
acted crazy man, he'd tell you do this, so he
scratching his head. So it don't make sense to anybody
but probably Adam Silvan Mark Tatum. And so once you
(11:15):
get a chance to interview them, please action call me
and let me know.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I will, and we'll send you the table. We'll kind
of see what's up. Ice Cube joining us here as
we get ready. June fourteenth, All State Arena and on
CBS Advice, It's another season of the Big Three, Dwight
Howard playing Camball, playing born ready Land Stevenson playing of course,
Michael Beasley, Joe Johnson and others still playing. How about
you personally, like every mountain you climb, you get to
(11:39):
the top this league, you built into a consistent success story.
What's the next mountain? Because again you've found them and
climbed up them and conquered them.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
What's next.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
Build a house on top of them? You know, it's like,
you want to be here for a long time, so
we got to be great for a long time. So
I don't see it as you know, we've achieved our goal.
We've we've only just begun. As they say, uh, we
want to be here as long as the NBA or longer.
(12:15):
So you know, I take a lot of work to
get there. And I'm having a ball.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
You know.
Speaker 6 (12:23):
I've had a great career in music, movies, and you
know this is a new frontier when it comes to sports.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Yeah, no, no, no question about it.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
What what what for? People haven't been to one of
these events? Right, And I've been right and it's a
great show. But Somebody's like, man, I've always heard about it,
but I haven't gone what's the experience like for a
fan to come to say they're going to come to
All State in Chicago, that that arena is really close
to O'Hare, they're gonna come in.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
What's that experience like?
Speaker 6 (12:58):
This is the most fun you ever had at a
basketball game. What's great is you get four games for
the price of warning, so you get a chance to
see the entire league, and I think that's unique and
it's fun, and we have entertainment gonna start to finish,
(13:20):
and we got some great squads this year, so it's
like a basketball festival. You come out there and hang out,
and it's an affordable ticket, so that make it family friendly.
And nobody's going to tackle you if you go ask
for a autograph from doctor J. The you don't have
to worry about that either, you know it. It's not
(13:40):
all tight and buttoned up like you will see that
a bulls game, I guess.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
No, some summer hoops with stars that you know, and
a game that's easy to digest and you know, it's
kind of old school three on three in the backyard.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
In terms of the physicality, it is. It is super physical.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
What's it like to at Dwight because and Dwight's game
is gonna be interesting, right because it was so much
based upon you know, defense, shop locking, rebounding obviously still
a value in the Big Three.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
What was it like to Land to Land? Dwight?
Speaker 6 (14:15):
Great? What's good about this year? In Dwight, He's gonna
have to show more skills than just defense, rebounding and dunking.
So in the Big Three, you gotta have a whole bag.
You got to be able to pass Dribble's shoe and
defend or you will get exposed. The help is not coming,
(14:37):
so you need to lock it up. And so he's
gonna have to show more than he even showed in
the NBA. So that's gonna be great to see because
I think he got it.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Hey, Q, man, this is a great league. It's gonna
be a lot of fun. I'm gonna head down to
Chicago watch you guys. It's Big three dot Com slash tickets,
Big three dot Com slash Tickets. Of course, you can
see you on CBS or on Vice TV, but as
Q pointed out, it's way better in person. If you
get four games, super family friendly, super affordable. I encourage
you to go out and see it. Yet another season
(15:09):
in the Big Three. I skeep thanks so much for
joining us, man, I appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
Appreciate you too.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Meet easy anytime in the things in your life. Jay
stew that thirteen year old me would be like elbowing
me that while I'm doing it. Interviewing ice Cube definitely
one of them. And ice keep knowing my first name right,
like having a working knowledge of Cube a little bit.
I've seen him at other events. It's really nice to me.
(15:39):
I mean, like NWAF the Police. I don't think there's
any question of all the cassette tapes that I had
was the most plague cassette tape I had my in
my childhood or adolescent hood, if you will.
Speaker 7 (15:56):
Yeah, I get it, that makes sense. For whatever reason,
that stuff was off my radar I was. I was
all about K rock music, grunge and Iron Maiden, and
then later in Wife I began to appreciate it. But
my first ice Cube experience was Boys in the Hood,
which was one of my favorite movies back then.
Speaker 8 (16:14):
Sure, and he was so good at it.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Well yeah, and then Friday was like Friday was our
movie from the two movies from my college days that
resonate the most or that we play the most were
Friday and something about Mary.
Speaker 7 (16:30):
Yeah, yeah, Sam and I went over to talk about this.
There's a couple of movies, Friday being one of them.
There was one that we just talked about. I think
it was the what's that Coen Brothers movie? The Coen
Brothers movie.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
With Jeff Daneum and Dumber.
Speaker 8 (16:46):
No, not Jeff Daniels anyway. Big Lebowski.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
Yeah, the Big Lebowski. I put him in the same category.
And you tell me if if I'm wrong. It seems
like those are two movies that you enjoy most when
you're stoned. And I've never been stoned, so I think
I missed the humor and Friday, and I kind of
missed the subtleties of The Big Lebowski.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Big Lebowski is very subtle. I don't obviously what's it
called is not. Friday is not a subtle It is
not a subtle movie. It's not like in your face,
but the comedic lines are pretty obvious. And yeah, those
are two very different comedies from very similar eras. And
so you didn't watch Big Lebowski at the time when
(17:32):
it came out, like that wasn't on your Radar then
either and no.
Speaker 7 (17:34):
No, I watched both the movies when they came out,
but I have not been like these this long time
appreciator of those two movies. Both of those are iconic
movies for people my age. Yeah, because I never smoked marijuana,
and I always put them in the same category that
all my pot smoking friends absolutely love those two movies
and there must be something they got out of the
(17:56):
experience that I didn't.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
I wasn't a pot smoker in college. I just I
don't know. It's just funny.
Speaker 9 (18:01):
The thing about The Big Lebowski is the dude, the
dude of vibes. He's he smokes pot through the whole movie.
He's a pothead, but like the other characters aren't. So
I wouldn't call it like a stoner movie, but it's
definitely like the dude is always chilling with his little
little tiny doobie. So you know, I saw Big Lebowski
in the theaters with my mom and she was like,
(18:24):
she really wanted to see it. She's like, I don't,
I'm a sow. That movie came out in maybe ninety seven.
I was like eleven or twelve, but not probably enough.
The best movie to show like a young boy. But
I remember it because it was funny. I didn't get
all the jokes, but I appreciate her taking me now
that I look back on it.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
No, I don't think anybody got all the jokes.
Speaker 9 (18:43):
The plot of the film is great. It's such a
well written film because it connects all these jokes and
all these like things that happened throughout the movie. They
kind of connect back. They circle back to him later
in the film, so it's pieced together very cleverly.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Makes sense.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
This is the dugout Leabe Show here live on Fox

It's Doug Otlab Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Do
you guys? Do you guys remember that show? What would
you do?
Speaker 2 (19:50):
I've Derek Carr did something that I don't know how
many of us would have done. We'll get to that
moment first, though, we have breaking news. Let me get
you to Dan Fire for the update.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Breaking news from Fox Sports sug.
Speaker 10 (20:07):
It's breaking news, but I don't know if it's surprising news.
A report from the NFL network says free age of
quarterback Aaron Rodgers has told the Steelers he will sign
a one year deal to play in Pittsburgh in the
twenty twenty five season. Oh, that's big news, Jerry Dulac
of the Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Yes, had to
(20:29):
get the both of them in, says Rogers expect is
expected to attend minute camp next week.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Oh, Aaron Rodgers, out of the darkness, retreat and into
the into the Steelers. Jay Stu, what is give me
the one word to describe your emotion when you hear.
Speaker 8 (20:51):
That very predictable. That's my emotion, that's your emotion.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Yeah, oh, I'm I'm actually surprised. You know what, I
what do you always say that you root for?
Speaker 3 (21:05):
What do you root for in your job? What are
you root for?
Speaker 8 (21:07):
I root for chaos, discomfort, root for content?
Speaker 3 (21:11):
Content.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Aaron Rodgers in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Aaron Rodgers no showing and not telling anybody until now
and then early June be like, yep, gonna play for
the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Does that fit the bill?
Speaker 8 (21:26):
Yeah? Aaron Rodgers great content.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Right exactly. So here's what I here's this is. We're
rolling on this. So we'll put this on social media.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Okay, that you will have people say one hundred different
takes on Aaron Rodgers playing this year for the Steelers.
Here's the only one that matters, Okay. And it's not
because I'm saying it. I'm saying it because it's the
take that matters. This is phenomenally good news. It doesn't
(22:03):
mean the Steelers are going to win the Super Bowl,
doesn't even mean to make the playoffs, doesn't mean you'll
have a great season. What it does mean is how
can he not pay attention to the Steelers, and in
the Steelers defense, they've gone how many years without quality
quarterback playing. It doesn't mean Aaron Rodgers is going to
(22:24):
be vintage or even end of last season in Rodgers
he may stink, but it makes sense because he was
the best possible option for a team that just needs
a Quarterbacky He's now going to play for another historic franchise,
Packers being one, Steelers being the next. I don't view
the Jets as a historic franchise, despite the fact they
(22:45):
pulled off what's deemed to be the biggest upset in
Super Bowl history.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
But more than anything, it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
One of the greatest quarterbacks of our lifetime has committed
to playing another year in the NFL for one of
the story franchises and a long tenured head coach who
everybody likes, and we all give a pass because he
doesn't have a quarterback. Now he does and a defense.
And then the Steelers and they tailor made it and
(23:15):
got rid of their problem child wide receiver brought in
all these tight ends. It all seems to work on paper,
and it doesn't matter if it does work, because if
you can't be great, at.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Least be interesting, and the Steelers are interesting.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Have you looked at the I don't love schedule watching,
as we know, but there are two that pop up
on that schedule for the Pittsburgh Steelers, which feel very
delicious to take a bite out of. Actually three ye
three games they opened the season in New York or
(23:53):
in Jersey against the Jets. The fourth, fourth game of
the season is in Pittsburgh against the Vikings, and uh
after the bye week, in a couple more games, right,
I think they're in this game seven week eight Sunday
night football. They take on their.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Green Bay Packers, Great Bay Packers.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
H So whether or not the Steelers win or lose
doesn't matter to any of us, and definitely doesn't matter
to the NFL. The NFL won today, kids, They won today,
and they won today in no small part because look
at the games. CBS gets the Jets game. I think
(24:38):
that game, the uh oh, the Vikings game is not
in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Right, it's somewhere else, Dublin Island.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Game is Ireland. And so the NFL network wins on
that one. And why is it it's won because that's
the Vikings, the team that he reportedly wonted to play
for right and then the Packers is NBC. Everybody wins.
Everybody wins. Buyer your reaction as a native Wisconsin but
(25:12):
also somebody who has never been a big Rogers guy.
Speaker 10 (25:14):
Yeah, it's about time, like he needs to be in.
He needs for the betterment of the team. This shouldn't
have gone. It shouldn't go up to training camp. It
shouldn't be one of those things. I thought he should
have been there prior. I think he should have been
there these last couple of weeks. I know he has
done throwing sessions, but I at least will give him
a tip of the cap to be like, all right,
let's see it, let's do work. And he's going to
(25:36):
be doing work in June.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
I'm excited. Have I won you over Jays too? Because
you are a guy that searches for great content. Let
me ask Dan Dakich. The show is called Don't at
Me Double d Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers not official
but Twitter official. What's your reaction?
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Hello?
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Yes, Dan?
Speaker 5 (26:01):
Hey, what's up, buddy? I didn't hear it.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Daniel live? Hey Dan, you're live on national radio. How
are you good for me?
Speaker 5 (26:07):
In the nation? My phone kept connecting to my car
and I'm in my house. Weird stuff. What's going on
with Douglas?
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Hey, Aaron Rodgers reportedly gonna become a Pittsburgh Steeler?
Speaker 3 (26:17):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (26:19):
Oh? I think it had to happen, right? Do you
know this? You always you always get jobs before they're announced.
And everything seemed way too obvious that he was going
to go there. What is Steelers going to do? No
matter what Donald Trump says, Mason Rudolph is not the
answer to anything but a good looking guy with a
good mustache. Good for him. It looks like he'll be
(26:40):
there for Minny Camp. So good. I was hoping the
Colts would get him now that Anthony Richardson is once
again hurt, But he doesn't. He goes into Steelers, and
I think that was pretty obvious.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
Let's get to basketball obviously.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
You know, as a former head coach, longtime basketball analist,
are there you cover all things. If you were describe
the Pacers run to the finals, what would it be?
Speaker 5 (27:10):
I was gonna say predictable because of how they played
the second half of the season. People don't really understand
they've been I think they're the best record tied with
maybe Cleveland in it in the East second half of
the season. And here's why. I don't know if it's
predictable to go to the finals, you haven't gone in
twenty five years, but unsurprising, let's put it that way.
(27:30):
The people that paid attention because they Doug you know this.
I know, I saw something the other day. You know,
you got to go through hard times, I think is
what you guys put out on Twitter and the Pacers did.
Haliburton was terrible early in the year. He admitted he
was terrible. He was soft, he wasn't guarding. And you
know when you go through hard times and then all
of a sudden, since January first, you're playing as good
(27:53):
as basketball as there is in Your point guard's going
nine point eight to one and a half, assist the turnovers,
and you have real talent on the team. All that
stuff is good. If you don't have real talent, it
doesn't matter. But they got real talent. Seopkin is a
real dude. Nemhart, you know, is seen as a guy
that's tough, but he's a perfect fit guy. And Nei
Smith is way better than anybody gives him credit for.
(28:15):
I think people are seeing it so I would have said,
you know, not surprising, maybe not predictable. This is a
good basketball team, and they've played very very They play
as well as any NBA team second half of the season,
and isn't that what matters? You know, first half of
the season is great, but you know, it's pretty big
sample size since January one, and they've been very, very good.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Why do you think Haliburton has these games where he's
just a guy out there?
Speaker 5 (28:42):
I don't know, Doug. It's frustrating. You know, you look
at the numbers. Just if he just took the numbers
and then their losses, he's eight point six assists. In
their wins, he's thirty two or fifteen. You know, it was,
honest to god, it's frustrating because Doug, you know, point guard,
you know this better thaname Hony point guard said other people.
But he's asked to score, and he would do this constantly.
(29:04):
In both of the games where he was just a guy,
he would go down the lane and as he was
clearing the perimeter into the lane, you know, he's got
a nice float game, he's got a nice pull up game.
He was not looking to score, he was looking to pass.
And the pass outs weren't an advantation advantageous pass out.
(29:26):
You know. It was almost like Doug, I swear to god,
it was almost like he had scripted in his own money.
I'm not scoring today, Like, okay, great, but that's that's
not good. He's got to be a dude. I got
to be a real dude and score first past second
when he gets past the perimeter defense. It's frustrating as hell.
(29:47):
The why he passed up so many shots that he
is so good at in the two games where he
was bad and he can't be bad in this series.
He's bad in the game, Pacers are going to lose. No,
not to be fifteen to Zip. It's funny he went
thirty two points fifteen the Zip assist the turnovers XE
was Isaiah Thomas, you know, the Detroit Isaiah Thomas. And
you ever do that? He's like, no, no, you know,
(30:09):
nobody does that. You don't have to be that guy
every night. But he can have a couple of games
like he had that New York Shires and just as
you said, another.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Guy, yeah Dan docas Joni us don't at me on
OutKick is his show. He joins me on the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. You've been at this
long time player, coach now broadcaster Rick Carlisle. What what
makes him special?
Speaker 5 (30:35):
Uh? Talking to Scott Pollard, who played you a long
time in the NBA, played for Rick first time, right,
he made an interesting point and that Mark Boyle, the
voice of the Paciers, said the same thing. When he
was first here. He was very controlling. He was very
eight seconds everybody got to look over him. Run the play.
He didn't run the playwright. You're coming out that kind
of thing, And I think like players and most coaches
(30:57):
do this. You know, you're trying to improve all the time.
Most people try to do that. And I really believe
that he learned, and I've heard this from other people
that know Rick, that he learned. Okay, let's make sure
that we adapt on two areas. One, the way the
game is being played now. You know it's a more
open game, three point shooting. You got to adapt to that.
(31:18):
And then the second thing is adapt to the people
that we have and anybody that has that, I've talked
to it. I've talked to people inside the organization and
in others they say he's done an amazing job. At that.
You know, when he had Dirk, he set things up
for Dirk, and if you think about it, you know
he set a defensive strategy. He know as an offensive coach,
but he's had a defensive strategy that beat Lebron and
(31:39):
those guys you know back in the day with Dirk
Novinsky and an older Jason Kidd. And I think that's
a big part of it. I think that that championship
earned him the trust. And I also think this Doug.
I think when you look at organizations and you look
at the Pacers, the ownership, the signmon's very stable, whether
(32:00):
it's you know, Herb or the Sons and Mels passed away,
but Herb or the Sons, and then you look at
Kevin Pritchard and Chad Buchanan the president and general manager,
they're all in line. There's no drama, zero and you
got a mature adult in the room with a proven
pedigree in Rick Carlile. The whole thing is straight down
the line. There's no wavering, there's no yap, but there's
(32:22):
no drama. There's literally no drama. And they don't have
choir boys. Nobody does, but they have no drama on
their team. Man and everybody tells me a lot of
that's due to the straight line. You just go straight
down from Herb Simon and the Sons to Pritchard to
(32:42):
Buchanan to Carlisle Halliburton. They're all kind of everybody's on
the same page, Doug, everybody's pulling in the same direction.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sport Traito.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Didn't you have an Indiana senator on earlier this week
talking about Angel?
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Yeah, Jim Banks. People in India are little pissed at
the Fever and a third time that what's her name?
Angel Reese and her crew have accused falsely Fever fans
of being racist, and no one's stepping up for Fever fans,
and Jim Banks said, look, we're own an apology by somebody.
(33:20):
You know, the Fever haven't apologized to their fans. The
NBA or the WNBA hasn't said anything other than yeah,
we didn't find anything to substantiate it. And I got friends.
This really hit me. I got friend he said, Dad,
I was sitting in the area. He there wasn't a
word said racist because we had African American Ussians. You
think they're going to take that, you think, And he said, like,
(33:41):
I spent twenty five thirty five thousand dollars a year
bring my daughter to game, by season tickets, by all
this stuff. I spent a blank ton of money. And
he's like, you know, now you're known as a racist
person because the Fever don't ever say, hey, this isn't
our fan base could We don't condone being accused of
something the WNBA. I don't expect Angel Reese to apologize,
(34:05):
but our team should. It's ridiculous. And uh, it's the
third time, and you know enough enough. You know you
know this. Everybody knows this. Somebody's trying to say nonsense
about you. The only way to stop it is to
confront it. And uh, been disappointed as hell in them,
been disappointed in the leadership in Jim Banks State Senator said,
you know what, I stand with our people. We're on apology,
(34:27):
and I agree with it. I totally agree with him.
Jim Banks a good guy. Obviously there's more important things,
you know, but he's on my show, a sports show,
so we're going to talk about it, you know, So
good for him, man, he stood up for the people
of Indiana.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Well, I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
I mean, my first thing is, I don't know if
it was Angel Reese's people is here's the biggest issue
I have is why do so many pay attention to
people who don't matter onto it? What I mean again,
there's there's some common sense there. Like I'm not saying
that there's not people who are racist in the state
(35:04):
of Indiana. I mean again, percentage wise, you know, even
if it's half of one percent, that there's still that's
a number of people. But the likelihood of them attending
a fever game, right and only doing this with Angel Reese,
and it's because you picked it up when you're watching
a highlight on social media. It's just again, I just
(35:26):
I'm blown away by how many people care about people
we shouldn't care about.
Speaker 5 (35:31):
Doug. If you go to a fever game, which I have, yeah,
it's all little girls, their moms, their dads. I mean,
this is not a Boston Celtics against the Lakers crowd
in nineteen eighty six. I mean it's like, you know,
I mean, everybody's dressing a Caitlin Clark yellow, whether it's Iowa,
(35:53):
whether it's the fever. And a couple of my actually
two of my buddies that sat in the area go,
I don't know what the hell you know, you can
make something up out of anything. In fact, the initial
thought was they were talking about people booing when Angel
Reies got the ball, like you know, people doing college
basketball all the time. But I'm with you, brother, you
(36:14):
know you here's the problem. You make an allegation. And
Google's great in some areas, but Google sucks in other
areas because if you, you know, you look up Fever fans,
you're gonna see allegations of racist and blah blah blah.
And it's one of those deals. Doug wars, it's enough
enough enough. You did it once, you did it twice.
That's third time. And Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
(36:35):
have been shown to be liars. I mean they lied
last year and the video came out. They said they
were not allowed in a hotel room because of racist people.
It was one guy asking the question of Kennedy Carter
who cheap shot at Angel Reese. One guy was out
there with a camera phony said, hey, have you talked
to Angel Reason And they don't reees and excuse me,
(36:57):
have you talked to Caitlin Clark? And in angel reason.
You know they came out, Well, we were accosted. We
couldn't get in to the point where the Chicago Sky
general manager saying no, that didn't happen, and the evidence
proved it didn't. It's it's enough, you know, it's like
your kids. Enough, I'm listening to nonsense. I'll take you, but.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Enough and well again, the biggest issue is again I
agree it's enough, but it's also it's like, it's the
point you made previously in regards to Google, like there's
no real way to put the genie back in the bottle.
And you call people racists and you call fan base racist.
You're like, what, just because I'm white doesn't And I
don't like you as a basketball player because you play
(37:39):
for a different team, Well maybe I don't like your persona.
It's not because you're blacking. You labeled me a racist, Like,
how am I supposed to defend myself against that?
Speaker 3 (37:47):
I'm not a racist?
Speaker 5 (37:49):
That's why I know. That's why, that's why I like
what Jim Banks did because at least now somebody's defending
you know. And again, defending doesn't erase it, don't get
me wrong, I mean defending you know, is after the fact.
And to your point, the genie doesn't go back in
the bottle. Google is forever. But having said that, your
only repercussion, or you can sit there and do what
(38:11):
the fever did, which you say, well, you know, we're
there's no place for you know this kind of TOI
you know, and we couldn't substantial It ain't say it
didn't happen, but every account it did not happen. But
I think everybody's so afraid to stand up. I think
everybody's so afraid to stand up to the old school
guard of the w NBA out of fear that they'll
(38:33):
be called racist for denying something I don't know's it's
the oddest thing in America. The WNBA, in my opinion,
has shown itself to be exactly what it is, which
is a racist, sexist mess. And screw them. I mean,
they attacked Mike Town one too many times. Jim Banks
is sitting one too many times, and we're going to
fight back. Screw them.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Dan Docketts. The show is called Don't At Me. It's
on OutKick dot com.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
You can check it on social media's well, of course,
long time basketball coach and uh uh basketball analysts and
national What.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
Do you give me your prediction? What do you got
who wins? I think the Thunder win everybody.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
I just I just again, like what is the you
know so much? It's about matchup strength and strength. Pacers
have great depth, so to the Thunder. Yeah, I think
that Haliburton's tremendous, but Shay is more consistent.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
I do think Siakam.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Is a special, special player and more consistent than Jalen Williams.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
But for whatever reason, you know, and maybe it's the
style they play. He's not always emphasized in what they do.
And I get my fear of the Thunder is well.
I think for most people was older team, veteran team
to get thrown around a little bit, kind of what
what Denver did to him before Denver was banged up.
And I don't think that's the Pacers. So uh, you
(39:56):
know the one, the one, and and like look, PACER's
great home court advantage, so does Oklahoma City great.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
So yes, no question, two good ones.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
I Actually I think it's gonna be a fun series
to watch because both teams play fast and open and
free and you know, it's not Iso ball, it's it's
it's not thuggery ball.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
But but I.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Don't think America will watch it that much because the
names and the teams and the brands of the players themselves.
Speaker 5 (40:23):
As I tell people at my age, I'm looking for
stuff to do, and my big fat ass is going
to be sitting in front of a TV at a
thirty fruit from my team and I can't wait. How
about that? All right?
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Thanks?
Speaker 2 (40:35):

Speaker 2 (41:48):
It's a Friday, and I'm working with geniuses. No, I
mean it, We'll play for you. The genius that is
Dan Byer with the completely accurate addiction of the end
of Game one of the NBA Finals upcoming.
Speaker 3 (42:05):
What a game, what a life? Right? I was watching
the last.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Night's game, and it's kind of fascinating to watch right
where you're you're watching and you're like, it's not really
that close a basketball game. But the the Pacers. Here's
the cliche. They do what they do, right. That's like
the worst worst cliche ever, But in this particular case,
(42:37):
it actually makes sense they do what they do. The
other thing that's crazy about the game is that Tyrese Haliburton,
he's just kind of a guy. Most of the game,
he really didn't do much, but then he hits the
game winner, and holy cow, Tyrese Halliburton. Oh my goodness,
what are we gonna do there? The final score is
(43:01):
one eleven to one ten. Haliburton hits the game winner
with point three seconds to go as they rallied from
ore they down fifteen in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
It's craziness, craziness.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Here's what I want to do. Like we can do
the formatic radio show, or I Killed the Grass with
the big hot take and then we take calls or something,
or we can just talk. I'll give you something I
saw that's kind of interesting here. Okay, so I love
Alex Crusoe. We do know why Alex Crusoe has bounced
(43:42):
around the league and had to earn his way into
league from the G League before becoming such a gigantic
part of the Oklahoma City Thunder. It's it's like the
do you remember.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
What election was?
Speaker 2 (43:55):
It was it when Clinton won where it's it's the
economy stupid? Right when George when George H. W. Bush
lost to Bill Clinton, the line was it's the economy stupid.
Like to me, it's the it's the shooting stupid right
that as much as he's become a a consummate professional,
(44:19):
a very good shoot, a very good player, he checks
back into the game for Cason Wallace ninety four, ninety nine,
ninety four, ninety nine, but Caruso missing two threes late
in the game, that that kind of triggered the run.
(44:41):
Triggered the run was he missed two open threes and
Alex and then lou Dort missed one late, and you're like,
why does it matter that Crusoe misses two threes? Why
does it matter that lou Dort misses misses a three late?
Because those are your worst shooters. And in trying to
(45:02):
figure out, Okay, how did this happen, How did they
make all these shots, how did they score?
Speaker 3 (45:08):
Et cetera.
Speaker 2 (45:10):
Think about the comeback, right, You had Pascal Siakam, he
had two different trips to the free throw line, he
made three out of four. You had Andrew Nebhart making
a three. Uh, you had Miles Turner making threes. You
had Obi Toppin making threes. Now, it doesn't mean that
(45:33):
Obi Toppin is a is a great shooter, doesn't mean
Miles Turner is a great shooter. But that's what they
have molded their NBA careers into. They have improved dramatically.
Turner has always been a good shooter made himself into
a forty percent three point shooter, right Aaron Nate Smith
(45:56):
forty nine and a half percent three point shooter Toppin's
only at their but he was running a fever last night.
And the big story to me is that they got
Oklahoma City to have their non shooters shoot, and then
they came down and smartly made threes late, and they
had one put back and a couple free throws late
(46:18):
as well. In other words, perfect analytics basketball up until
that last kind of pull up jump shot, but doesn't
really matter. Hey, tremendous analytics basketball at both ends, making
the sub thirty five three point shooters shoot and not
allowing shots at the rim only two's after the non
(46:43):
shooter shooting a three and then taking threes and layups yourself.
But I mean that one was weird because that one
seemed another one seemed over, and even the Oklahoma City
crowd like wasn't freaking out. And then it happens so fast,
bang bang bang bang bang, topping with a bunch of threes,
(47:04):
Miles Turner a couple of threes, and now all a sudden,
you're like, that's getting kind of close. And then Lou
Dort fires off when it misses, and they come down
and can another one, and you're like, oh my gosh,
we have ourselves a game.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
Bayer. You will play it for people. We put it
on social media.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
You literally predicted this thing, like to the t on
what could or would happen with the Pacers having a
lead late When I say game one NBA Finals, what's
the first thing that comes to your mind as to
what you actually saw.
Speaker 10 (47:37):
Yeah, it was the Pacers doing it again, and you
try to find points in the game, Doug where you're like, Okay, this.
Speaker 4 (47:44):
Is where it turned. That's where it turned.
Speaker 10 (47:47):
I'm a big fan of the twelve point lead because
it's never as big as you think, and it's never
as small as you think, because sure of the three
point shot, you could be at eighteen and you know,
two possessions and it gave me down to a six
point game and the same sort of breath. But we
were hovering around that area. So the nine point lead
at that three minute mark was big. And again three
point shot and Nie Smith hits it, and now it's
(48:09):
a six point game and it's a close game. Throughout
the crazy part that I thought what was was big
you mentioned Caruso. Remember at the end of the first half,
Caruso had a shot at the buck at the right
at the bucket and it didn't go down, but they
still led by twelve. But that was a half where
the Pacers had nineteen turnovers and they only led by twelve,
(48:29):
Like Indiana was only down at that point. And it's
at that point that I'm thinking to myself, well, this
is still a ballgame if Indiana just decides to hold
on to the basketball. And the reason why yesterday I
said what I said was because I felt that that
is the turning point of it. If you navigate that
stretch the final six minutes in you're Oklahoma City, You're
(48:52):
you're in a really really good spot. No not only
are the overwhelming favorite, but you have done something that
the other teams have not been able to do when
they faced Indiana. But if Indiana does it now, I
feel that the series has turned because you can look
at all the bad things that Indiana did in Game
one and said, wow, they still were able to come
in and steal it. So that's why the stretch, it
(49:13):
just felt, was so important because it just felt like
a tone setter for the series. That it's going to
go one way or the other. Either Oklahoma City is
going to end the Pacers' streak of comebacks and kind
of right or wrong of their own from what happened
in the Denver series, or now Indiana is fully into
the series with a legit chance to bring home the
(49:33):
NBA title.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
H Yeah, this is one where I can never understand,
nor any of us can, the mentality of each individual team.
I do think that for the Pacers moving forward, their
thought process has to be we could not have played
any worse than the first half. We played fine the
(49:57):
second half, and then we caught a heater and we
did we did, we came back and win the game.
Imagine what happens if we actually play a good first half,
a could clean first half for Oklahoma City again, you
would think the thought process is what you want positive
is hey man, we were up nineteen, like we're the
better team.
Speaker 3 (50:16):
All we got to do is just step on their
throat next time.
Speaker 2 (50:19):
On the other hand, there's never going to be a
part in the game where you're looking up at the
lead thinking we're good.
Speaker 3 (50:26):
Right, It's just never like we did never, never good.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
And as much as you can say well, hey, maybe
that makes Oklahoma City a young team step on their
throat and make a fifteen point game a thirty point
game next time. Maybe, or maybe you're up that magic
number of twelve what you're talking about, and Nie Smith
hits a three and all of a sudden, Diagno's going
to take quick time out and they kind of start
freaking out and get tight. But none of us know
(50:51):
what's gonna happen. We just know, like psychologically, it could
literally go either way. And that's why And I know
Jay's off, he's up hiking in big today, Jay Stu,
But that's why he hates the stupid prediction game because
you can't tell the mentality. You can't tell how one
ball goes in what doesn't go in. But I have
to tell you that that was one of the most
(51:13):
thrilling endings. Look, every part of me should want Oklahoma
City to win. And just again, as you guys know,
my kids all live in Oklahoma now right. I'm close
with some people in that organization. I know people in
the Pacers organization too. I think it'd just be great
for the city, great for the Organs and the people
(51:33):
I know in the organization. Tell me that the people
above them in the organization are all like great people,
Like there's just no bs to them.
Speaker 3 (51:42):
I like everything about it.
Speaker 2 (51:45):
So my ties should be to Oklahoma City. But watching
a team kind of methodically, not freak out, not panic,
hit a three, you get a stop at a three,
you get a stop at a three, you get a stop,
And then watching that crowd get watching the thunder get tight,
watching the officiating get to be totally even right, that's
(52:06):
a big thing. Like it got cut to six and
Shay got kind of a he got one of those
free throw merchant fouls. He's like, all right, they're gonna
give him a couple of calls to get him, but
that was the last call he got. Then the next
two pull up jump shots he got nothing on normally
regular season get called a foul, and it was not.
And that was one of the most thrilling comeback wins
(52:29):
I can think of in the NBA Finals, And again
I end up rooting for the Pacers, only not because
of the contrarian to me, but I just I appreciate
how hard it is what they've been doing and how
smartly they execute what they're doing.
Speaker 10 (52:46):
And I would even say that the comebacks that they
had in the other games were more miraculous than this
one was. Because this was this was closer than over
the final ninety seconds to two minutes than it was, say,
in the Cleveland series or in the Bucks series, where
the Thunder did have to make plays. They didn't make
a bucket for the final ninety seconds of the game.
(53:07):
You're like, there's a there's another one for Oklahoma City,
and you wonder, now how that creeps in?
Speaker 2 (53:12):
Well, Jellen Williams too big, missus, they're late, right, and
as as he goes, so goes to Thunder. Obviously, Shane
misses what could have been the game. Seiler could have
put them up up three. Here's Tyrese Halliburton on how
his team performed overall this game.
Speaker 11 (53:27):
If you look at all the numbers, it's not the
recipe to win. We can't turn the ball over that much.
We got to do a better job of beating gaps,
gotta do better job of rebounding. You gotta do a
better job all over the floor. But come May in June,
it doesn't matter how you get them, just get them,
you know, so we'll take it. You know, we'll enjoy
this one.
Speaker 5 (53:44):
Tonight.
Speaker 11 (53:45):
But I understand we got another game coming up in
this tough building, and we got to be prepared for that. So,
like I said, we're just a confident group. We got
each other's back.
Speaker 3 (53:54):
Here's the league's MVP and how the Thunder ended up losing.
Speaker 8 (53:57):
I don't know.
Speaker 12 (53:57):
It happened so fast. I feel like we got matched.
He got down going right, pulled up from the midi
and knocked down the shot.
Speaker 5 (54:06):
Uh. I don't know.
Speaker 12 (54:07):
It didn't feel like anything crazy. He just he just
made a play. With the time winding down. We had
control of the game for the most part of it.
Now it is a forty eight minute game, and they
teach you that lesson more than anyone else in the
league the hard way.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
He's right, it does go fast.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
And then you know, Indiana doesn't call time out in
the last possession, so oftentimes NBA teams have I've been
in that situation and I've had the opposite thing happen
right where you don't call time out, just let him
go make a play like oh man, should I have
called the timeout or not? There Ah just dying over it.
Speaker 3 (54:40):
But it does. It happens really fast. He hit three.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
You're like, all right, it's nine. Then you missed a
shout and he hit three, Like okay, it's six. That
that happened fast. They eat the fault line. You're like, oh, okay,
it's eight. Then he hit it three and it's five.
Like whoa, whoa, what what happened? Now we're in a game.
Happened so fast, so fast? And I love what Alburton said.
He's basically like, we didn't really play well enough to win,
(55:07):
but that matter, which to Dan, you're my point, which
is like, Indiana's got to be sitting there thinking, imagine
if we actually played well, you know, we won a
game on their home court and we were do do
for the first twenty four minutes.
Speaker 10 (55:23):
Yeah, and selling the Pacers are without faults because that
is one of their faults defensively as well. They yeah, yeah,
I mean they haven't been as strong, but boy, last
night it sure came through and they needed to. The
nineteen first half turnovers is absurd. Was it to only
be down twelve at that point?
Speaker 5 (55:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (55:43):
Yeah, And that's one of the reasons though that again,
you know, thunderplay, both teams play a lot of guys.
I thought it hurt both teams playing a lot of guys.
I thought of Oklahoma City would have played a little
bit more of a condensed rotation last night. They could
have maybe stepped on the throat of the Pacers in
the first half. Uh, It's time for the Tyrek Play

Speaker 3 (56:19):
Rebound, Indiana. Eight seconds to go. The Pacers are not
gonna call a time out. Taddiburton has it.
Speaker 2 (56:26):
With three driving, with two pulling up ahead.
Speaker 5 (56:29):
Heading with three tenths of a second to go? How
many more times can this team do that?
Speaker 3 (56:39):
Soweets babies? Have you have you seen the Haliban tweets
out there? Have you seen those? Have you seen it?
Those are amazing?
Speaker 2 (56:51):
And it's like, I will I refuse to be the
guy who gets offended right because anything Taliban related whatever
supposed to But it's so good and so funny that
I gotta tell people, if you're bothered by it, then
you know what, just stay out of this one. We're
all going to have a good time and enjoy basketball
and understand it's not that deep.
