(00:24):
great day. The Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast, same bad time,
same bat channel, every single stinking day. Sorry, and we're
fired at what an amazing time of year. What an
amazing time of year. Lots of firings or retirings you
(00:45):
might have heard from Dan Byer, like probably the least
discussed retirement firing. Whatever's Mike Schilt. I don't believe for
one second that he, by the way retired today. Sorry,
I mean listen.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I want to get to Brian Callahan, I want to
get to James Franklin.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
But I mean listen. I reserve the right to be wrong.
I reserve the right to be wrong. If he wants
to spend more time with his family, baseball does not
really allow that. If he has something an illness or
older like a parent who's sick, you want to spend
I can't really argue with that, but dude, what fifty
(01:29):
seven years old and he manages in San Diego and
they by all accounts, most people think they've underachieved in
the playoffs the past two years. I would take the
A got to the playoffs the past two years, but consider
how much money they spent, the swagger they played with,
and the fact that they were up two games to
one of the Dodgers and the Dodgers boat raced them.
And then you know this year they get beat by
(01:51):
the Cubs, don't even get to face the Dodgers. I
think there was that was a that was the mutual
party of ways. And then you have Brian Callahan who's
fired by the Titans. That one's a case of two
things right, and it happens all the time when we
have these first round draft pick quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Now. I don't know if Callahan knows what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
I do know that they weren't particularly competitive for the
most part this season. I think the crazy part about
it is, you know, you draft a rookie, you're not
gonna be great. But they did just beat the Cardinals
last week, but shut out by the Texans, smoked by
the Colts, beaten badly by the Rams. You know, Rams
(02:37):
and Colts at home. I think we knew where this
one was going. And the general manager that hired him
no longer works for the team. So when you don't
have somebody to have your back, when you're going through
a really hard season and you got a rookie quarterback,
this is what happens.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
But I think it's fascinating.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Here we are six games in an NFL season and
we have a coaching firing, and they're one in five
and it doesn't feel like it's going good. And that
one makes sense to me because the Titans could have
a bump.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Do I think they're making the playoffs? I don't.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
But they still have the Saints at home, They still
have the Jags at home. They still have the Texans
at home, Chargers at home, Seahawks at home, Chiefs at home.
They got to go to the Niners, not for a while,
but the Niners are all banged up, Browns aren't particularly good.
There's some potential wins on that schedule. The juxtaposition of
the the juxtaposition of the NFL game and the college
(03:44):
game could not be more stark. In contrast, we had
more coaching firings over the weekend, most notably James Franklin
and why I understand Brian Brian Callahan and this has happened, right.
You draft a rookie quarterback and the expectations are that
you're all of a sudden gonna achieve something awesome, and
it rarely happens. In year one, they brew them, they
(04:06):
bring in a new coach in year two, and away,
how do they go. I don't know if that's what
happens with the Bears, but that's what happened with the Bears.
That's what happens with a lot of places. James Franklin
gets fired after they lose to Northwestern by a point, this,
of course, when they were twenty point plus favorite against Northwestern,
(04:26):
following up being a twenty six point favorite on the
road at UCLA, following up a tough close loss to
Oregon at home. I think the Callahan firing, while nothing
to celebrate, is reasonable. I think that James Franklin firing,
especially at this point in the season, is utterly and
(04:48):
completely and terribly ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
But that's where we are with college sports.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
This is why I say college sports it's not professional sports.
It's amateur hour for professional sports, amateur hour for professional sports.
Because what did Penn State actually do by firing their
head coach?
Speaker 2 (05:17):
What do you do?
Speaker 1 (05:19):
They waved the white flag on the season and said
this thing's over now. They did just pass a new
rule where in the with the NCAA where you can't
go into the portal like you used to be, like
when I got the job.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
A year and a half ago, or not even a
year and a half ago.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Players automatically get the first thirty days in the portal,
whether the portals open or not open, right, And that's
happened with all these other schools. They just changed the
rule where now it's fifteen days of free open portaling,
but only after the new coach is hired. Here's the
way it really works in college athletics. They can make
whatever rules they want. If a kid wants to go
in the portal now, he'll go into the portal now.
(06:02):
And if the NCAA holds it up, they're like, you
can't pass a rule, you know mid season when other
players have been able to go into the portal after
their coach is fired. That won't stand up in court.
Everybody knows it. The point is, you've just led a
match to your program in the middle of the season.
Lit in the match, and it may not feel good
(06:24):
with Drew Aller getting hurt and having backups and being
a preseason top ten team. Heck, you were top five
of the country going back two weeks ago. It doesn't
feel good. But have you seen what's happened to my
own water? The only thing that people are pumped up
about with Okloba State football is a bunch of kids
(06:45):
went shirtless and went to one section and they tried
to have set some fake world record for most shirtless
people in a section.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
That's what the football games have become. Next weekend's homecoming.
Who's gonna go to that?
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Who's gonna go to it?
Speaker 1 (07:05):
When three of your top players have put themselves in
the portal.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
The players all know they won't be there next year.
The coaches all know they won't be there next year.
Like for a week, it's kind of fun, right. If
you fire a guy before the last.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Week of the season, the interim coach can, Hey, let's
run some trick plays. Let's have some fun. Let's just
go out there and see what we got. Let's let
our hang, if you will. Brian Callahan's one and five,
and it's very unlikely, very unlikely that that season will flip.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
But there is still the idea of you can flip it.
Maybe get in the playoffs. Probably not.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Maybe makes a little bit more sense because he got
a different gentlemenature. But the players can't leave. All the
players are gone at Penn State, all the players are
gone at Oregon State, all the players are gone at
Oklahoma State, all the players are gone at UCLA, even
though they're winning. You have wit on the student athlete,
And don't tell me that the student athlete experience is
(08:05):
important to you when you fire their head coach six
games in the season, right, they still got to go
to Iowa, still got.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
To go Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
Indiana comes in, who looks like world beaters that rank
third in the country, go to Michigan State and Nebraska
at home. I asked a crazy hard schedule. What was
the win in firing James Franklin today?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
What is it?
Speaker 1 (08:32):
You didn't get ahead of anybody trying to hire Matt ruhle. Right,
all you did was you you showed your hand to Nebraska,
which they might have thought anyway, but you showed your
hand in Nebraska where down Nebraska has until probably December
to figure out how.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
We can keep our coach. If we want to keep
our coach. He's at Penn State. Alum is the Ada
Penn State. It's one of his closest friends.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
So the juxtaposition of two different firings, one in the
pros Brian Callahan kind of makes sense. You know, he
was along for the ride with the Bengals when they
went to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
He did a good job there. But he has him
been a head coach with James Franklin.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
And I know everybody likes to point out that James
Franklin doesn't beat ranked teams, But James Franklin's Penn State
Nadaney Lions. They won two games in the playoffs last year,
did they not? Those are big games. Who cares about
the number of the rankings next to you? So you're
allowed to pay a guy forty nine million dollars, not coach.
(09:38):
You're allowed to fire a guy whenever you want, as
long as you pay him that money. And you treat
him with dignity. But you've quit on an entire football program.
You've lit a match, and you've done so six games
into a season. Yes, they fire coaches in the NFL
not as often, and the players can't leave, and they
(10:00):
they won't leave in the offseason unless they're not under contract.
It's a completely different deal. Please stop telling me this
is professional sports when it's amateur hour in the decision making,
because ask yourself, honestly, if aler would have thrown the
ball on third down and gotten the first down when
he broke his ankle, or he would have scrambled for
(10:20):
it and got it, or they would have found a
way on fourth down had he not gotten hurt, and
they kick a field goal and win the game, and
they're four and two. You don't fire him, So you
fire him over one loss. Again, you can fire him
if you want.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
It's fine.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
He gets forty nine million dollars. Everybody has to move.
You started a program. Why in the middle of the season.
How does that make sense. Nobody's explained that to me,
and nobody can explain it to me because everybody knows
it doesn't make any sense. This is the best of
the dog dot Leap Show on Fox Sports Radio. It's
the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. And
(10:56):
you get a national champion, two time national champion, you
get a Heisman Trophy winner, you get a guy who
you see, I'm big new kickoff on Fox.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
And you've got a guy.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Who's joining us on behalf of a really good cause.
Matt Lioner joins us here on on the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Matt, I got a lot
of things I want to get to, especially leading up
to the cause and the anniversary twentieth anniversary of the
Bush Push. But but help me out, where are you
(11:22):
on where we've turned the corner here in college football?
Coaches getting fired UCLA three games in Milma, Mattern three
games in now, James Franklin six games in. Where are
you on this growing trend in college football?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Uh? Yeah, I mean listen, it's there's so many there's
so many moving parts in college football, right in college
athletics in particular. You and I both know and il portal,
but it just it just it's just different. It's a
different era. I as a as a fan and just
someone who loves the game and loves watching these kids.
(12:00):
It's play and all that. Like, I hate it for
I hate that part of it. I hate this. I
hate the fact that these players are there at Penn
State and a coach that recruited them, and and and
like you see like all the players coming out and
posting and like how much James did for them. You
hate to see that, right, because these players are there
for them. And again we know the reverse of that
(12:22):
as coaches lead to go take a better job and
so on and so forth. But I hate it, man,
I hate it. I hate it for the player. I
hate it for the fans. It doesn't feel fair. And
now those kids are kind of stuck with like like
what now, what's next? It becomes a distraction, It becomes
a lot of things, right, So I think that's the
(12:42):
short answer. I understand the business side. I understand, you know,
from the administration side and some of these positions of
like hey, we got to do this now because because
of the portal, like you want to get ahead, you
want to like the recruiting, like there's a there's a
lot that goes into it. But you know, fortunately I
(13:04):
never dealt with that, right, I can only imagine that
I've kind of thought about this, like what would I
do if, like I was there and Pete Carroll got
fired like six games in, like like I don't know
if I would have stayed, Like I don't know how
the trajectory of my career would have went, you know.
So I do. I do hate it though for the players, man,
I really do.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Yeah, I do too, And I think I think what
we have here is we have this idea that somehow
it helps you in the portal, and again I can
only tell you from actual experience, it doesn't.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Because because even though like we call it the.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Dark portal, right, like guys that we know are going
to go in the portal, you get to mid season,
like everybody knows that's gonna happen, Like unless you have
a new staff there, that that doesn't matter, right, that
just it doesn't matter. Now you can put somebody in
place to begin the process in terms of your general manager,
and they can help you with your your search, but
(13:58):
that that doesn't I don't know. My thing is, I
don't think anything is gained. You don't get any ground.
You're just telling people, Hey, we're going to have a
whole new football team next year.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah, I mean, I do agree. I mean, and yeah,
obviously you know this as well as anybody, but I
do think there is a point of like, if you're
gonna do it, then just if you're craft at Penn State,
and obviously there's a lot of pressure and this is
just building up this year, right, and it's still crazy
to think, like like like they're one play away from
beating Oregon a couple of weeks ago and being probably
(14:29):
the number one team in the country and who knows,
right then then you know, like that gives them some
momentum and if not just spiraled, right, but like there's
a lot of pressure there. It kind of felt like
like if not now, when like like let's just let's
just do this now and we can like to try
and get ahead and like and like again, we still
got to get a staff and now the guys that
(14:49):
we're going after are probably going to be playing in
December and January, so they're still like I just think
it was like, let's make the decision now and not
in January, so at least we have an idea and
we can kind of think.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
It's the a row Man, isn't there isn't there a
a isn't there a time in between January? Like again,
they were one play away from being Oregon, one play
away from being uh from Northwestern. If he doesn't aler
doesn't get hurt, who knows what happens on fourth down whatever? Right,
he did win two games in the playoff last year,
and I get it, like, at some point you get
to the like, here we go again, not winning big games.
(15:22):
I'm not saying you can't fire coaches. I'm not saying
you can't fire coaches with a game left. I don't
understand the mid season. Hey, let's especially when here. Here's
my issue with it. You know, because you've been to
Penn State, you've been to some of these places. They
all want to they all want to position themselves as
we're kind of holier than now, right, like we're the
(15:44):
Big ten. We do things the right way. The guys
that don't, that's the sec they're doing the exact same stuff.
It's there's no different there. So don't don't tell me
you're you're different, you're special. That would be my thing.
You can fire them, fire him with a game left,
and then you have Senior Day. It's just last day.
Everybody hugs everybody's owns is over. You got plenty of
time to go off into the portal and do whatever
(16:06):
you want.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Would that makes sense, Well, they're and they're not gonna
I mean they're not gonna. I mean they're not gonna
hire a coach until probably at least December anyway, So coach, Yeah, exactly.
So the point is valid. Uh. And again you can
look to kind of the just the I think the
pressure that was mounting up with the fan base and
and all of that, and then you lose your quarterback
(16:26):
and it's just like you almost just like James, we're
gonna let you go now so we don't have to
deal with that. Yeah, I get it. Again, I hate
it like I hated it for like for you know,
for Gundi Oklahoma State. I hate it for UCLA. Now
you're seeing Ucla because of that, you're seeing them now
win so that you know you could obviously, but but
the whole mid season, early season. Yeah, it's just it's
(16:47):
not a great. Look. I don't get it. There's a
lot of things like the poor I don't like the
portal either, you know, like I think now that the
one portal now is great, but like it's just you know,
you and I are old school obviously, Yeah, that old
school mentality. It's a little bit different. It is. It
is different now. But again, like I said, man, a
lot of a lot of moving parts. Obviously that's a
huge job opening. We'll see what happens. But I feel
(17:10):
for the players, dude, I really do.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Okay, let's let's get to let's get to the brass tacks,
the Big Ten outside of Ohio State. I value your
opinion because your eyes are different than everybody else's eyes.
Is it at the same level as the SEC? When
the SEC has like, you know, eight teams or something
in a rank the Big Ten? These schools, the Penn
(17:33):
State falling off, Oregon losing at home, uh, Michigan not
being as good as they used to be. What's your
opinion of two through whatever, two through five or six
of the Big Ten versus two through five or six
in the SEC.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Yeah, I mean I think that. I think the interesting
thing is and I think the SEC is a great conference.
They've been they've been. I mean, obviously the two national
champions are too latest to come from the Big Ten.
I would just say this right about the SEC, and again,
preseason rankings are the worst because they prop teams up.
(18:08):
They're in there for no reason. Every you know this,
every team is different, every season is different. It's like
you haven't played anybody, so you know the the you know,
like the perfect example. And I just I just texted
as someone like LSU. LSU's ranked tenth in the country.
They're ranked tenth in the country. They have not like
(18:31):
go look at go look at their go post their
resume right now and tell me why they are ranked
tenth in the country. Like they beat Clemson, who's three
and three week one. We all Clemson's top five. That
can like like we prop these teams up by we
like you know, the people who are voting, and it
doesn't like like LSU's not the tenth ranked team in
the country. Ole miss just just barely beat Washington State,
(18:56):
who lost by forty to North Texas, I believe, But
but we're propping them up because they every week is
a battle on the road and this and that and
like and again that's just that's just the sec point
that I'm making right now. I don't think like you
look at the Big Ten right now, I think outside
of I think Indiana's really good I think they're they're
(19:17):
they're legit, legit Ohio State, Indiana, and I think Oregon, right,
the top three are very good and those top three
can beat any top three in America in my opinion.
And after you get that USC, I think there's still
question marks. Michigan, there's still question marks. I think a
washing team is really good. But again, like you know,
like I just think there's this like mirage of like
(19:39):
who's really good and who's not because of this propped
up ranking, and then they just stay in there. Like
Texas is four and two and somehow they're in the
top twenty five, but Washington is five and one with
a pretty good resume and they're not even in the
top twenty five, you know what I mean. So to
answer your question, like like teams three through eight, you know, like, yeah,
(19:59):
I think I think SEC is probably favored in all
of those games, right, because I think Texas, A and
M is really good. I think I think Bama's really good.
Georgia is just good because you know Tennessee. But I
don't know, I think some of these teams they just
get propped up. Like I don't think Vanderbilt is as
good as probably people think they are Missouri, like like
Missouri hasn't beaten the soul. They played Alabama tough, but
(20:22):
they literally look at their they literally haven't beaten anybody
yet they're still in the top twenty. You know, so
again and again you can people can do that for
the Big Ten as well. It goes both ways. So
I think the Big Ten is a great conference. I
really do that. Obviously we cover the Big Ten, but
I got mad respect. I think Bama's playing as well
(20:42):
as anybody in the country. I think Georgia is dangerous
as they just figure out ways to win because of
that culture in Kirby Smart. But some of those teams
I'm just not sold on being that highly ranked.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Matt Leoner joining us here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Supports Radio. Can you see block and penetrate
the lines of Notre Dame.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yes, I'm not as worried about. Offensively, our offense is
really good. Like our offense, you know, even in the
game against Illinois, we're pretty pretty pretty dominant in that
game for the most part. Of the turnovers you can happen.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Last week was a great game for UFC perception narrative,
confidence in that locker room. Really most importantly to go
out there and beat a team like that, because I
think Michigan is a good team and their DNA is
a line of scrimmage, right, whether they're eight and four,
ten and two, that's that's they're very good upfront. Notre
Dame is a totally different beast. And it comes down
(21:45):
to the same thing for me if I'm watching, if
I'm a fan, can our front four and I say
front four? Can our front four? Can we can we
stop the run with four or five six guys and
and play pass coverage? Because the difference between Notre Dame
and the Michigan Michigan's one dimensional. Bryce Underwood is really talented.
I think he's going to be great. He's not there
(22:07):
yet in the past game, they're just not there and
they haven't shown that. Notre Dame is different. CJ. Carr
is a stud. Like this kid is probably a top
five pick in two years. I think in this four
game win strength, they're averaging three hundred passing two hundred rushing.
So that's the problem, Like this is a totally different
beast than what we just saw. Also on the road,
(22:29):
so to answer your question, I don't know, like that
that's the challenge, Like I value that win versus Michigan
is one of the biggest wins probably for this program.
Definitely the biggest win for Lincoln Riley. There's no doubt
in the way it was one because it can slowly
(22:49):
change the perception. But you know this, the difference between
good and great is consistency. Like great teams consistently play
that way at a high level and win and win
these type the games. And I'm not I don't know
if we're that yet, you know, And this is a
this is a game to find that out.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Stet Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of of Matt Lioner. What what did happen to Oregon?
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Right?
Speaker 1 (23:14):
How how did orgon that look like the best team
in the country? Uh goes you know, they go into
Penn State and get a win. How how did Indiana
go and do it?
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Well? They they? I mean this, this is the craziest thing.
You watch that tape, Like they got dominated the line
of scrimmage, Like like Oregon, who's really good on both
fronts like that, they're very good. And I still I
still feel very highly about Oregon, like I don't look
at that loss and be like man like, like I
think we I think we we we respect Indiana more
(23:44):
after that. The defensive line. The interesting thing with that
was Indiana excuse me, defensive line and front just completely
outplayed them, like their front. That was the difference, and
that was what was shocking. I mean, they got some
good players up there, but like they dominated them on
their home field. And you know, and I think the
(24:05):
thing about Dante more is, and he's really good. The
kid's really good. He's going to be great. He's still young, right,
he hasn't he hasn't really, you know. Obviously the Penn
State game was was an overtime game on the road,
and that's that's a tough environment. And and maybe now
Penn State's obviously not as good as everyone saw, but
that's still a pretty good defense. And he was able
(24:26):
to uh kind of control that game because their defense
kept them inute. This one was different. It just it
just was different. Indiana is no joke, man like, They're
they're tough, they're confident. Their offense is really really good.
But that d line was nasty. That was a difference.
So that they just that game was close, but like
they they they were in control of that game for
four quarters, Like they never felt out of control of
(24:48):
that game. And uh, I'm telling you what, Doug, Indiana
is going to run the table and and they're going
to be most likely it's going to be Ohio State
Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game, which is just bananas.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
That that is bananas.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
So you're working with Abbott on a blood drive here
with the anniversary of the Bush Push. How does it work?
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Yeah, so Abbot they started this campaign last year we
give Blood Drive campaign. I was a part of it
last year. This is year two. So basically they've teamed
up with every school in the Big Ten, all eighteen schools,
and it's a competition basically to see whatever school can
donate that most blood will win a million dollars to
advanced student or community health for their school. So there's
(25:32):
a big incentive. The winner gets announced at the title
game December sixth, the Big Ten Championship Game. Some key numbers, Doug,
just to keep an eye. Last year, about sixty thousand
lives were saved. Every donation saves up to three lives.
This year so far, over one hundred and ten thousand
lives have been saved, which is amazing, and we're only
(25:52):
halfway through the season. So it's just just people have
showed out and showed up for this year too. It's
really great, man. Someone needs blood every two seconds. There's
a massive blood shortage. There's just crazy numbers. I've learned
as i've as I've teamed up with this with the
Abbot of the last couple of years. So it's just
it's a great cause. Abbit's amazing. Obviously they're working with
(26:12):
the Big ten schools. Everyone's kind of, you know, obviously
competed and they have fun, but it's for a greater cause.
Big ten dot org backslash abbot is is where you
can go to find the location near you university or
the city you live in. You can donate for your school,
you can just go donate for someone close to your
(26:33):
family member, someone you know that needs blood, or just
donate for the cause in general. So it's a great cause.
Appreciate you. Let me talk about it, man. It's it's again,
like I said, of one hundred and ten thousand people
save so.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Far, Carson Palmer took over Santa Margarita Big One and
Santa Margarita took down your own al modern modern day nuts.
I mean, look, I know you got cold in everything.
I'm just wondering when you're gonna go and put the
headset on and take back modern day, to take back,
to take back the league.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
You dude, you go, you go, Tustin, I'll go modern
day man, let's do it. You know what it was.
You know, my oldest son was there. We're not there anymore.
I obviously love modern day. I was. I saw that
score and I'm like, what seven to six? But like Gush,
I got Lenny Vanner made over at USC, got Carson,
(27:27):
t J. Huschmanzotti had a lot of buddies I know
over there. So I actually watched I think Santa Marguerita
played Mission Vahill week one. It was like the game
and we actually watched that on TV, and I think
they lost, but it was like all right, and now,
all of a sudden, I mean that's that's a I mean,
that's a huge win for them. So I'm not sure
what's happened on Modernday. Two losses and they still got Bosco.
(27:49):
But pump for Carson man, like you know his son
fletches there. He's gonna be the quarterback there probably next year.
I told my wife this, you know, she's she's like,
she wants me to be you know what. It was
the old coaching Friday night lights like Chris Chandler or
yet whatever, I forget. She wants me to be that
(28:09):
in like ten years. So when I retire from TV
and anything else that I'm doing. My little boys are
five and a half and four, So in about ten years,
you might see me on the headset of you know,
maybe Merre Coast over here in Manhattan Beach or somewhere,
you know, to get out there and call some plays. Man.
But until then, I enjoy what I do, dude. But
I will say this, I was going to say this.
(28:31):
You would be proud of me. I got two new
hips for the last couple of years. Right. I feel good.
I'm in my Tuesday night rec league. I'm averaging about
twenty points a game. I'm playing outside the three point line.
It's a thirty five and older league. Some good players.
But you'd be proud of me. Man, I'm showing up, dude.
I got a game. I got a game tonight, so.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
I expect nothing less than buckets. I don't pass it.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
I just you won't find me inside the key, dude.
I just I just heave up threes and hope they
go in.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
No, it's so funny. It's like when I play, I
got to get back to playing some I'm just coaching.
Takes away that time or whatever. Yeah, but when I
do play, Guys like you passed a lot of college, Like, yeah,
I passed in college. I'm not passing anymore.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
That's time you were. I mean, you were a great pastor,
that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
I definitely was not a great shooter. Matt, you're the
best man. Best of luck to your men of Troy
this weekend. Can't wait to see you on the set
of Big Name Kickoff. That show keeps getting better and better.
And appreciate all the folks that abott what they're doing
with this blood drive. Thanks for our.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Guest, all right, appreciate Javy Man. Good to talk about.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
That's a Heisman Trophy winner and two time national champion
Matt Lioner joining us on the show.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
It's the Doug Gottlieb show Fox Sports Radio. So yesterday
during the show, Yesterday during the show, we had breaking news.
Dan Byer always breaks in with the news like this
is this show's I was texting the guys last night,
and it's not just part of it's because our show.
I just think we do a really good job, guys.
I don't think other people cover baseball as well as
(30:08):
we do, or other stories or breaking news that the
conversations we have. I really like where we're going with things,
and you know, we'll put the brakes on and Dan
Byro breaking with breaking news. We have breaking news at Kirksinetti,
who's the head coach of Indiana, got an incredible deal,
an EXTENSI where it's gonna pay him eleven point eight
million dollars on average per year. I'll tell you why
it actually makes sense, even though he's massively, massively overpaid.
(30:32):
They're all overpaid, right, like lots of CEOs are overpaid. Whatever.
I'll make it make sense to you upcoming a little bit.
But I want to get to Mark Dominic, who's the
former genial manager of the Tampay Buccaneers. He's spending his
entire professional career in the National Football League and he
joins US now first weekly visit here on a Friday
in the Doug Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. What's
your biggest takeaway from Thursday Night Football where the Bengals
(30:54):
beat the Steelers at home?
Speaker 4 (30:57):
My biggest takeaway is when you're in the division and
the division rival and you trade a quarterback, you've ruined
the division and you've ruined your franchise. And I think
the Cleveland Browns did an injustice, even though they're trying
to get their own picks and their situation together. You
just don't trade Joe Flacca within the division. And suddenly
now the Bengals have a chance to be back in
this and maybe when Joe Burrow comes back even better plans.
(31:18):
It shows you how good of an organization talent wise,
the Bengals have over the Cleveland Browns as well.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
You know what, I'm really glad you pointed that out.
I want to get to the Bengals in a second,
because the Bengals get this reputation of being cheap, and
I'm sure there are times in which they have been cheap,
but I kind of think it's unfair with how much
money they've handed out to players. But let's go with
the Browns. My line when they traded him, I think
you'll love this mark is for any other team, it's crazy,
(31:48):
but it's not because it's the Browns. Right, Like the
Browns have done. There was no reason for them to
give Deshaun Watson a five year, no cut guaranteed contract.
There was no reason for them to take two quarterbacks
to rookie quarterbacks this year. There's there's no reason for
a lot of these things except they're the Browns. If
not for organizations that are run that way, we wouldn't
be able to say other organizations were run well because
(32:10):
that one seems to be run poorly. But this is
like Mike Tomlin was right. And by the way, Jay Stu,
I think you texted us last night, Mike Tomlin was right.
You can't do that. They they they made the division
way more competitive than it needed to be by taking
it wasn't anybody their quarterback and handing them to the
(32:32):
Bengals who were desperately in need of quarterback, and you
got one that's won a super Bowl and still pretty
pretty solid.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
Yeah, especially what we saw last night, And I agree,
it's just the Cleveland Browns continuing to make blunder after blunder, and.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
It's it's easy to pile on, right.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
We can all sit there and you know, I made
mistakes too when I was a general manager. But the
reality is got to learn from them, and it doesn't
feel like the Cleveland Brown's front office is learning from
mistakes they've made, and then they continue to spin it
out of control. And it just when Joe Lacko goes
to another organization and lights up the Pittsburgh Steelers defense,
which is a good defense, not as to the same
level as maybe some of the other previous Dealers defenses,
(33:08):
obviously we know, but he goes and lights it up,
it shows you that there's something really wrong. And it's
not the offensive line in Cleveland. That's actually probably their strength,
specifically inside. So I just think that it just speaks
badly about the overall structure of where the Cleveland Browns
sit today and just the decisions they've made. And you
got to give credit to the Bengals and taking advantage
of the situation and not being afraid afraid to pick
(33:30):
up the call and make this trade.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
Did you ever did you ever used to read the
Sporting News. Remember remember those Sporting News three Do you
remember the Fly? The little column that the Fly and
the Fly used to have a line that says, didn't
you used to be right? And it was when you
were no longer what you know? It's like you watched
the Bengals last night and they're they're performing well despite
(33:52):
the and and protecting a quarterback that we didn't think
they could protect. Didn't you used to be the since
sid of Bagels? I would say, didn't she used to
be the Pittsburgh Steeler? He had all day to throw.
They couldn't stop the run. It's not like the Bengals
have some vaunted rushing game. Couldn't stop the run and
couldn't stop the pass. Didn't she used to be the
Pittsburgh Sears. What happened to their defense?
Speaker 4 (34:14):
I think it's the secondary. It's something that's hont that
I think the Steelers since the beginning, right, they can
never quite get the cornerbacks in there that can be
consistent at the high level. Yes, they've tried to make
some move to be able to improve that, obviously, but
still I think it's just that secondary continues to try
to find itself, and I think when they traded away
Mike A. Fitzpatrick again, I think that hurt them. But
at the same point, this has been a problem they've
been dealing with for years. And yeah, they used to
(34:36):
be the Steelers. I just thought there upfront would be
stronger than it was or it was last night. That's
the one thing that was surprising to me is I
thought they'd get after the quarterback more and in more sacks,
more opportunities like that, but they didn't do it.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
So yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
Agree, the Steelers are just always good and that's a
frustrating thing, even though you would take it if you
were the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
It is the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Trader.
That's Mark Dominic He's our guest. Okay, what do you
do when you're the Jets and you got a first
year quarter first year head coach, and you know, you
start to hear Aaron Rodgers' story and you're like that it
might actually make sense when you look at how he's
(35:16):
handling things. It's not going well in New York. Now. Look,
I don't think you can win with Justin Fields anyway,
But it's not about winning or losing with justin fields.
It's about it's like he's trying to be Dan Campbell.
He's not Dan Campbell, and he just is missing. What
do you do if you're the Jets, Well, I.
Speaker 4 (35:35):
Mean, I think you're just worried. I think if I'm
coach Glen or if I'm the gentlemanager there, I'm telling
coach going, Look, we realize the season is going to
be harsh. I understand you've got to create your culture
and continue to stay by it no matter what. So
as we get more and more young guys into the building,
they're understanding the expectations of what we're trying to build here,
understanding that twenty twenty five isn't going to be that year.
(35:57):
And I know that you want to win right away.
But I would give him the confidence of, hey, look
we're going to go through this together. We're going to
make this work, and not scare him out of like
not being who he wants to be and just worried
about the next victory. Because I do think with the
Jets they're going to be in a position to take
a quarterback and I think they will just to offseason,
and I think that's going to be a big meat
move for them, because I still think Aaron Glenn as
a leader is a good one, and I just know
(36:18):
that the Jets just as a roster is not a
good one.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
What has Drake Made done to evolve the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 4 (36:29):
I think he made great decisions right with the football.
I think that's the thing. The processing seems to go
very well for Drake Maye. I think he's doing a
great job of getting back and knowing where he's supposed
to go with the ball and getting out of his
hands as quickly as he can to not sit there
and then force a turnover. And so I think that's
the thing with Drake made this been the most impressive
is that I think his processing has really sped up
and that's created a guy that's you know again, here's
(36:51):
a guy that's outperforming. I think the talent around him,
which is a great deal for a quarterback and shouldn't
make for a very fun offseason for the New England
Patriots to continue to weapons for him.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
You know, I was I was thinking the other day,
I was interesting to think about you and some of
our discussions. Smart Dominic's our guest. He's joined us for years.
Is awesome former gym Managery Tampay Buccaneers, and sometimes we
get off on on on roads and anybody can look
at Donald and Baker and go like they were both
on the same team with the Carolina Panthers, and the
(37:22):
Panthers wanted to keep in either of them. How has
this happened? And how has this happened? And you know,
to me, so much of it is about confidence. You know,
both of those guys at their first spot, everybody lost
confidence to them. They lost confidence in themselves, didn't have
a great surrounding cast or whatever. As a guy who's
been through it, now, Donald looks like he's he's a legit.
(37:45):
I don't know, top fifteen quarterback right Probably not what
he was build coming out of SC but solid. Nobody's
calling in to question the contract he got. Right now,
Baker is in conversation to be MVP of the league,
and I get that. You know some of it was
him and playing hurt and you know the dysfunctional Browns
organization and OBJ and that's why he's not there anymore.
(38:06):
But Carolina had him both. How does this happen? How
do you go from two guys get cut become two
stars in the same position in the same league a
couple years later.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
Well, I truly think, because both those guys all come
from mcveish hand trees at part of their career in
terms of Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, that that's the
difference because those those systems help a quarterback learn how
to move. Why are we doing the play, why are
we getting the ball out quickly? Here's the design, here's
(38:37):
what we're going to check to. They're just one. I mean,
you see guys in and out coming out of those
systems being productive, and they both had time to be
in that system. The problem with Carolina is they're still
just trying to figure out, you know, obviously with the
number one pick and what happened there, but it's a
different type of system they've been going through. And I said, I,
if I've got a young if I was an agent,
or if I was a young quarterback in the Nation
Football League, if there's any way I could spend a
(38:58):
year or two, even if as a number three in
San Francisco or the Rams, I want to be there
or Minnesota. Quite frankly, because O'Connell's bringing that same mindset
to his organization as well. I just think it's the
right place to be. We'll see what happened with JJ McCarthy.
I don't think it's not been what I expected it
to be, But I still think there's a lot of
upside there too, because of his character and his demeanor.
But I think that's the reason why I think Baker
(39:20):
Mayfield they regained their confidence in a system that went
back to why were they such high picks in the
first place?
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Great point. Okay, JJ McCarthy, what are your thoughts so far?
Speaker 4 (39:30):
I've been very disappointed. I mean, I feel like, you know,
he's played one good quarter, maybe two, and I really
thought we'd see a guy that would take a big
step this year, you know, and you got to remind
yourself that really this is his rookie season because of
what happened last year. But I want to feel like
each week we need to start building. If we continue
as flatline, that's a very big concern because I know
(39:51):
mentally he can handle it, and no characteristically he can lead.
So now it's just can he processing? Can he make
the good decisions? He's not been doing that, and so
now we've just got to wait to see. I still
believe so I'm not going to write JJ mcrossey out
by any chance. If I'm a Viking fan. Yeah, I'm
a little disappointed, but not be frustrated yet, because you've
got to realize he's got six games, five games under
his belt in his NFL career. That's not enough to
(40:12):
go on yet.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Mark Dominck's our guest here on the Doug Atlib Show
on Fox Sports Radio. What's changed with the Kansatate Chiefs
that's allowed them to seemingly turn around their season.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Well, it feels like they're tackling very well. I think
their cornerbacks are playing well, Like Jalen Watson's the guy
that's in his fourth year that has really come back
this year and played well like he is in a
contract year, which he is. I think that's been a
big part of it, just that having him out there
in the way he's performing takes some pressure off. And
then offensively, they keep getting little pieces back offensively that
they need to have in terms of weapons, and I
think that that's been important. And I think the tackles
(40:47):
have probably I mean, the interior guys are playing very well,
but the tackles have played a little better and they've
been trying to help them out a little bit more so.
I think they're being very smart about the protection for Patrick.
And then Patrick's back to looking like Patrick Mahomes from
you know, last two years ago, three years ago, whatever
it was.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
He's just he's.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
Threatened the ball and it's not because of Travis Kelce.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
It's it's because he's, you.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
Know, spreading the ball all around to everybody. And I
think that's the big difference.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
Mark Eagles Eagles. It just seems combustible. They don't seem
as good as they were. Aj Brown, you know two
games ago, they tried to force it to him. His
attitude's not great. You know, Jalen Hurts does have some limitations.
You know, he does everything except for really throw the
football crazy. Well, what's your perspective in the likelihood that
(41:37):
they turn this thing around.
Speaker 4 (41:39):
I think they can turn it around. I think the
offensive line's still playing very well. I think they just
need to feed the ball to Saque even more than
they are, and whether that's in the passing game and
the short throws, but it's time to just pound it
with Sakon and see what a game looks like with
twenty six carries and six catches, and I know it's
a lot to ask for any running back, but I
think that's they got to get back to the grassroots
of why they got to the Super and won it
(42:00):
last year, and that was on the back of Saquon Barkley.
It wasn't Jalen Hurts throwing the ball over the field.
And the other part is that they're just not getting
to the quarterback in terms of sacks or pressure. They've
got to get Jalen Carter on the field and healthy,
and if they can get to that point, those two pieces,
to me, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter are really the
keys of them getting back on track.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Mark Uh, Look, it should be a great football weekend.
Love talking ball with you, especially after last night. I
got me jacked. I did not expect that to be
a good game, and then it was. It was a fun,
great atmosphere, good football game. Disappointing end for the Steelers,
but still fun. Thanks so much for being our guests.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
Enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 4 (42:37):
Thanks for having me on again.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
He's the best
