(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. It's Thursday, and we
have a titanic showdown of two teams who are kind

(00:42):
of shelves of their normal self. And while the Kantstity
Chiefs authored the greatest loss of the season, right, that's
actually what they're known for. They played the best game
of the year, but they lost that game. The l
A Chargers are not known for being l A's team,
nor are they known for actually being good. But here's

(01:05):
the crazy thing about tonight's game. The winner has pole
position for a home field advantage throughout the playoffs. And
while that doesn't seem like a big issue for the
Chargers since even their home games feel like road games
most of the time, it is for the Chiefs. Even

(01:26):
though they've lost with the last five home games in
the playoffs home field advantage the Chargers and the Chiefs.
It's interesting because I watched the Raptors without Kawhi Leonard
completely and thoroughly dismantled the Golden State Warriors last night
in Oakland, first time and I think thirteen years they

(01:47):
had won in Oakland, And in spite of it, spite
of the beatdown, I turned on sports radio watch sports
to be like, yeah, I'll believe it when I see
it in the play offs. Granted, the Raptors did get
dusted early second round of the playoffs by the Calves

(02:07):
last year. They went to the Eastern Conference Finals the
year before, and I believe went to six games with Lebron,
with Kyrie, with Kevin Love. And I think a blind
man could see this roster is better than that one.
The coaching seems to be better than that one. But

(02:29):
much like the Chargers tonight and even the Charges that
they win tonight, you'll believe it when you see it.
I can tell you they got Derwin James will be
a Rookie of the Year. I can tell you they've
got Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, and they might have
Melvin Gordon. They will have Philip Rivers. They do have
Keenan Allen. They got dudes all over the football field.

(02:53):
Be like ah At Chargers. They started one and two,
they were owing four to start last season. Think about this.
The Chargers won six of their last nine games last year.
They've won ten of their first thirteen games this year

(03:14):
by my math, and it's not that bad. That would
be sixteen and six. That's an incredible record. It's remarkable numbers.
And yet until you see it tonight, and maybe if
you do see it tonight, until you see in the playoffs,

(03:35):
you're still not gonna buy it. You know what? This
reminds me of Hyundai's, right, do you guys remember when
a Hyundai first became first became available. You remember when
they first came out, They had all kinds of build
quality issues, all right, they all kinds of all kinds

(04:00):
of it. But if you look now Hyundai's and Kia's
they're fighting the basically with the Patriots or Alexis. All Right,
you're like, you know, listen, I know they're not sexy.
And even though they've kind of tried to restyle their grill,

(04:21):
the fact is that if you want to be safe
by a Toyota by Alexis, don't buy a don't buy
a Kia or a Hyundai, because when they first came
to the States they were junk. But they've slowly but
surely matured as a company and come up to speed
with the big three, who also kind of get a

(04:43):
bad rap, right like, oh, well, these cars, the American
made cars, aren't. Hey, you actually look at the initial
build quality and that's all kind of really good. You know,
far less issues than there ever used to be before.
But it's pretty fascinating to to go to you know,
US News and World Report and see with the you know,

(05:04):
best initial build quality. You've got a Kia up there.
You've got an Audie they always used to break down.
You gotta Ford. Yeah, you're sure you have a Toyota.
Sure you have a couple of lexus Is. You got
a Honda, which you knew would be there. But a
Kia and a Ford and a Hyundai. There's two Kias.

(05:27):
That little Kia Soul that actually looks like a looks
like a Mattel car. That's one of the best built
cars sup mostly in America, even though it's not actually
built in America and that's what the Chargers are. The
Chargers are in a similar fashion the Jaguars, only if
the Jaguars had a better quarterback. Right. They've been drafting

(05:51):
well for years. They finally hit it out of the
park the last couple of years in the draft with
James this year, and Nick and Joey Bosa last year
and Melvin Gordon the year before that. You draft well enough,
high enough that many years in a row, and you
have a quarterback who's still hanging around, starting two in
five consecutive games, and shocker here, you're a pretty good

(06:13):
football team. They were good last year. They were a
kicker away from winning any of those first four games,
and they were dropped passes away from beating the Chip
Chief's the first time. It's hard to get people to
go and buy some car that they're not familiar with.
They're hard to get. It's hard to get people to
get in with a lug. It with a new luxury brand.

(06:33):
You know, Kia has that big luxury sedan that that
supposedly Lebron drives. Hund's got the Genesis and they got
like a new form of Genesis. I'm not telling you
what cars to go by and not go by. All
I'm gonna tell you is you and your brand. Your
your brain associates brands with American made trucks, tough, rugged,

(06:58):
real wheel drive, Toyota's front wheel drive, soundly made last forever,
Honda's same thing, kind of boring, anything else junk. And
the truth is that over time in building the right way,

(07:19):
whether it's a company or a football team. Look at
the Raptors, I'm gonna playoff team how many how many times?
And they went and they said, look, Kyle Lowry and
Serge Ibaka and O g and a boy and all
these other guys that we have coming back. If we

(07:39):
add Kauai Leonard and Danny Green to the mix, two
guys that have won championships before, how much better can
we be? And so last night you may not buy
the Raptors. You may need to see it in the postseason.
I do too. Tonight you may not buy the Chargers.
You might need to see in the postseason. I do too.
But the fact is that you win enough games over

(08:01):
enough time, you produce enough quality cars, and people are
gonna start to notice. The crazy thing is the Chargers
are going to get better and healthier. They're going to
get Hunter Henry, who stephen A had already playing even
though he hasn't been cleared yet, whereas the Chiefs they

(08:22):
might have topped out. And some of this is whether
it's initial build quality or our initial look at the NFL.
How many times have we told you when the Patriots
look bad earlier in the year, like when they got
rent run off the football field this year by the
Jacksonville Jaguars, they'll figure it out. We don't grant the
same We don't grant the same pass to the Chargers

(08:43):
who started one and two this year or oh and
four last year. We don't. We don't grant it to
the Dallas Cowboys who have won what six games in
a row. We don't grant it to the Houston Texans.
We only granted to the Patriots and the Chiefs, of course,
fight the opposite. They've gotten off the hot starts going
back to last year, and even though it felt different,

(09:06):
now they lose. They're running back Tyreek Hills playing a
little bit, you know, limping a little bit. You lose
Sammy Watkins, you lose your backup running back. I don't know.
I have no idea if the Chargers can go in
and get a win. They've lost nine in a row
to the Chiefs. I don't know who owned the Chiefs

(09:29):
if you've ever seen slap shot, but I know who
owns the Chargers. It is the Chiefs. But they get
a win tonight. I think I get home field advantage
about the playoffs. I don't think they're losing the rest
of the year. The Ravens at home. I don't even
losing the rest of the year. And even then I
don't think people are buying in until you see at
the playoffs. All right, up coming next, there's one big

(09:53):
reason I think we're starting to see the decline of
Tom Brady. I'll tell you what that is next, But
first you know, in sports, a trade can make or
break your team. A good one can mean a championship,
like what the Celtics put together now or what they
put together with the Big Three. But a bad one
can set your franchise back for years, like the Brooklyn

(10:15):
Nets or the Herschel Walker trade. It's no different when
it comes to selling or trading in your car. You
need to make good choices, and with true car, you

Show Fox Sports Radio. I think it's amazing it is
amazing the pushback that Warren Moon has gotten. Warren Moon
who played quarterback at forty four years old the nash
Football League. And I don't know how many of you

(11:37):
guys remember Warren Moon, Warren Moon the player. Um, I
know Dan Buyer remembers Warren Moon the player because Dan
Buyers a Seahawks fan and Warren Moon is synonymous really
with two NFL teams, Seahawks being one, Oilers being the other.
A right, um like look. He did have that one

(12:00):
year at the very end with the Kansas City Chiefs,
but and it was only one year with the Seahawks.
Also played with the Vikings for a couple of years,
had an amazing career, amazing career mostly mostly in Houston
with the Oilers, but one woman played quarterback at forty

(12:21):
four years old. So he was asked about Tom Brady
and he said, quote, the numbers are starting to show
there's a deterioration coming, especially when you talk about blitzing,
because that's something that he used to really excel at.
You do start to lose some of your reflexes and responses.
I started to figure out that later on in my
career too. Even though your mind knows exactly where it

(12:44):
should be going. Sometimes your body just doesn't react as fast.
You're starting to see some of that with him. So
I've heard everything from the warn Moon is jealous, right,
and that with Skip Bayliss said, one one is jealous
that Tom Brady is gonna pass him in terms of law.
Jeff d to the Warren Moon just doesn't like Tom

(13:04):
Brady to the Air's a hot take from Warren Moon.
I hadn't heard in a while who knows better about
playing quarterback in their forties then Warren Moon. And Warren
Moon wasn't a great athlete back there. He threw an
unbelievable ball. Do you ever watch Warren Moon throw football?
It looked like the football was longer than everybody else's

(13:25):
football because it was such a tight spiral. He had
an amazing, amazing arm. Okay, so let's dive in and
look at the actual numbers. And I know he's talking
not just about raw numbers raw data. He's also talking
about analytics. And you can point to, well, they don't

(13:47):
have as good as support staff surrounding team as they
had last year. Well that's actually not true. They have
a better running back. They didn't have Julian Edelman last year.
You can say it's not as good, but Gronk. Gronk
miss games last year because of injury. He misses games
every year because of injury. He's grown, and the numbers

(14:07):
do support that. Tom Brady is not at his peak,
nor should he be expected to be at his peak.
Tom Brady's quarterback rating his QBR right now um is
the lows it's been since two thousand fifteen. His actual
quarterback rating is ninety eight point two, which is not

(14:30):
only as low as has been since uh two thousand
and fourteen. But remember everyone else's rating is up. It's
he's not in a He's not doesn't happen in a vacuum.
His his numbers are relatively pedestrian. He's on pace to
throw double digits in interceptions first time since two thousand thirteen.

(14:54):
He's on pace to have as many fumbles as he
had since two thousand thirteen, and he's on pace to
have relatively average quarterback rating when everyone else in the
league who's of substance, that's a crazy high QBR are
crazy high passer rating. Think about that, he's still in

(15:20):
terms of total qb R. If you take that as
the raw number, he's still at seventy two point fifth
best in the National Football League. That's really good, really good. Uh,
but when you look at at Tom Brady in terms
of passing, he's light years behind Drew Brees and Ben
Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck. I don't think any of this

(15:43):
one is crazy talking to that's me trying to dispute
Warren Moon and what it's like to be an older
starting quarterback who's not not mobile. That's like someone else
trying to tell me what it's like to host a
radio show in the afternoon for a decade nationally. You know, Uh,

(16:07):
I did a call in show once. Sorry dude, not
the same. You know, I listened to the radio every day,
and I listened to all these shows. Sorry, dude, not
the same. Like literally, I've worked at three different networks
for three different bosses, with three different styles in the
exact same time slot. Somebody else canna ask me, Somebody
tell me about three to six Eastern time. Cool. I've

(16:29):
seen all the research, all the data, and I've I've
performed this job decently enough to have been offered to
remain at my previous two places of employment and chosen
not to do so, so you're gonna tell me about
what takes to I just I've never understood that that
that idea. And what warm Moon said is, hey, the

(16:54):
numbers are starting to show this some deterioration coming. I mean,
even soft sold it. He didn't say he's deteriorating right
before our eyes or he stinks. He just said, hey,
numbers are starting to show some deterioration coming. And even
though the mind says, oh, moved to your left for
whatever reason, the body doesn't move to the left at

(17:15):
nearly the same pace once you hit forty. Look, I
wake up every morning for the last year and a
half feeling energized. I like coming to work here. But
I and I'm someone who never turns down another opportunity.

(17:35):
And I had a I had a crazy week of
travel two weeks ago. Do you guys remember that I
flew I took a red eye to Chicago, to the Gate,
a radio show at game in Chicago, flew to Charlotte
and then the Blacksburg did a radio show from Blacksburg,
and then did a Twitter show from Blacksburg the next day,
then drove to Lynchburg, Virginia, flew out of Lynchburg into

(17:58):
Kansas City to the college basketball aimed at radio show
and basketball games via remote in Kansas City for three
Consection nights, flud to Vegas, did did to get did
two games each day, did Dan Patrick show the day
after Thanksgiving. Then I flew home, had a day off,
did an NFL game, And I'm telling you the next
week like I was still tired. Why because I'm not

(18:24):
twenty six anymore. My wife's like, this is the most
tired I've ever seen you, Like, this is the oldest
you've ever seen me. And I still have a ridiculous
reserve of energy that I think most people my age
don't have. And I also also know that my job
getting there, you're actually usually paying me to get there

(18:44):
more than to do my job, because doing the job
as the fun part, Right, But I don't understand the
victory altar is what warm Moon's saying. Hey, I've been
a four year old quarterback. I know what happens. Look
at Tom Brady and some of the misfires and mistakes
he's made. This is what I see happening. I don't

(19:04):
think that's crazy talk. I think he's the most educated
man in the world on what Tom Brady is and
will be going through. There's never been a man more
educated on playing late in his career as a true
pocket passer than the Hall of Famer Warm. Oh he
wasn't good. No, he's actually Hall of famer. He was
actually a pro bowler late in his career. Let's get

(19:29):
you Dan, buy or find out what else is going
on the world Sports Dan doug Tonight, Week fifteen in
the NFL Thursday Night Football on Fox, Chargers and Chiefs.
Chargers ten of three, Kansas City eleven and to Kansas
City riding that nine game win streak against the Bolts. Amazing.
It was hen you talked about it with Anthony Lynn
at the training camp. Uh stopped that we had with

(19:49):
the Chargers because the Chargers were opening against the Chiefs.
Talked about that winning streak. It's still going Chargers in
Chiefs Tonight, seven thirty Eastern time on Fox. Eagles quarterback
Carson Wentz as a f invertebrate his back but may
not eat surgery. However, Ian Rappaport yesterday had it that
Wentz would not play this Sunday against the Rams. Expect
Nick Foles to start in that game. Seahawks Wade receiver

(20:11):
Doug Baldwin not likely to go against the Niners, still
dealing with his hip and groin injury. Well, Cowboys running
back Ezekiel Elliott practicing today despite a shoulder injury. Guard
Zack Martin held out with a knee injury. Nick's Rocks
rookie Alonso Treer sending a two year deal with the
team today. He had been on a two way contract previously,
while Fox Sports insider Kin Rosenthal reports the Dodgers have

(20:33):
sound really with Joe Kelly. Kelly gets a three year
deal where twenty five million dollars, and the Indians traded
Edwin and Garnacione to the Mariners. Wrong pipe, Doug went
down the wrong pipe. You squing on a mountain, dew
a little just a little little water. So that's all.

(20:54):
Just needed a time out, Just a twenty, not a full,
just a twenty. Yeah. Edwin kr Acion goes to the Mariners.
Carlo Santana going back to Cleveland where he spent most
of his career. Great stuff. Uh, Cleo, that's exactly the
guy they wanted to have come back to Cleveland. Like, Hey,
guess who's coming back to Cleveland? The most of his career.

(21:16):
There no, not him, he's and it's it's not Carlos
Santana the musician. I know, yeah, got it, got it understood,
all right, Go taking the squig of water if you will,
and they'll get down the right pipe. Um. Yeah. One
of he's playing. The best football in the NFL right
now is the Dallas Cowboys, and it's still it's one

(21:37):
of those deals where when they line up to kick
a field goal, I'm like, oh, here comes Dan Bill.
That's not Dan Bailey. Dan Bailey and the Vikings uniform
just feels weird. It does. That's because Brent mar took
his job. Took his job. The Cowboys kicker joins me
on the Doug Gotliep Show when you, uh, Brett, thanks
so much for taking time. You know. It's it's interesting

(22:00):
sometimes guys won't sign with a team, even for training camp,
because they know they have no real shot of making
the team. I don't know what were your initial thoughts
when you first joined the Cowboys in camp. Yeah. My
my thought was it was it was an opportunity for
me to showcase myself and wherever that was. Um, you know,
I didn't really have control over that. So I tried

(22:21):
to just kind of take it day by day and um,
you know, control what I could and uh, you know,
see how see how stuff worked out. But um, maybe
maybe I was a little nai even thinking that I
had a chance from the beginning. But UM, I think
that that mindset served me well. No, no, no question
about not your first trip around with with the cowboys,

(22:43):
but a lot of completely new faces. Um where were
we were were you when you found out you were
hitting the job? I was in the hotel connected to
the facility. Uh, just kind of waiting, waiting on that day.
That can be, Uh, that can be quite a day,
especially if you're kind of on the bubble and you're
not sure what's gonna happen. So, UM, I was optimistic

(23:04):
at that point and was obviously very happy to hear
from coach Garrett and um and and get started here
for the regular season. You know, It's it's funny Dan's
been on a show a bunch of times. Dan went
to Oklhoma stated, I went to Oklhoma State, and so
we we'd always have him on and there was just
this assumption that you know, it's like like he was
just gonna be a Cowboy cowboy forever. Um, but do

(23:25):
people do gloss over the fact that with injury he
struggled last season? So, now, what's it like for you?
Because there is a little bit of a large looming
shadow where if you miss the kids, like what Dan
Bailey never missed the kid? Well, actually he did. What's
that like to have to deal with? Uh? To be
honest with you, I just try and you know, stay
in my own lane and and not really pay attention
to that stuff, um, and just kind of go about

(23:48):
my business and and do things to the way I think,
uh gives me the best chance to be able to
perform on Sundays. So, um, I've you know, some someone
had to be here. Someone's got to be kicking for
the Cowboys. Um, and I'm happy to have that job.
And then I'm trying to go out there and uh
and make every single kick. I realized that's, uh, that's
not gonna happen. But um, that's that's my mindset every

(24:09):
time every time I go out. Brett Mayer joined us
on The Dug Outlip Show on Fox Sports Trading. I'll
give you something in TV and radio, and I think
it relates to you in TV and radio. The bigger
the show you do, the more support you have, the
easier it is to look good. Right. I think that's
a I think that's a lot like playing kicker, right
because when you went to Canada, I'd have to think

(24:32):
the conditions were worse, the footballs were worse, the support
staff was was worse. I don't I don't know about
the depth of the roster and how much you get
to work, you know, individually with your holder every day.
If it's if it's a punter there, The way that
it is here is that the way it works in football. Uh.
I think that's a very I think that's a very
good analogy that you made there in Canada was a

(24:52):
little cougher because I punted as well. Um, so I
had backup quarterbacks, receivers and stuff like that as as
my holders. It was tougher to get that to get
that work in. And here with Chris and LP are
are snapper and hunter and holder. Um we spend all
day every day together, so that that relationship is awesome.
UM and those two guys that have been awesome to

(25:14):
mejorout this year. All right, we gotta touch some Canadian
football stories worst whether you ever kicked in was what?
Oh man, um my rookie year, I played in a cold, rainy,
windy game got delayed because of wind and rain. Um,

(25:35):
and it was I don't know, forty degrees maybe that
was that was pretty awful. Um. Where where is this
because you're you played in Winnipeg. Was that in Winnipeger's
that somewhere else? That game? That game was actually in Ottawa, yep.
Um at the worst conditions I think consistently are probably
in Hamilton's. Um that that stadium is just windy, and

(25:57):
it's right right on the water, and um, just how
it's set up as kind of a kind of a
wind tunnel. Played in a lot of cold games, a
lot of under thirty thirty five games, especially late in
the year there. Um, it's it's one of those things
kind of kind of bot to what you said, is
that the stadiums aren't as big, um, so there's not

(26:17):
as much blockage from the wind. Um, the weather's worse
the farther north, you ghost, it's just kind of every
everything kind of working against you in October November up there,
But um, I had so much fun up there. I
met a lot of great a lot of great people.
And um, you know, at the end of the day,
I was still playing football was my job and so

(26:37):
that was that was always fun. Um did you did
you fall in love with poutine? Oh? Man, I did not,
uh fall in love with it. I do love it,
but I I had to h I had to refrain
myself from it because that's a that's a fast track
to a heart attack as well. Yeah, it really is.

(26:58):
But poo. We talked about pot because I did with
my wife and some friends. We did a trip to
Canada I never had before and we had I was like,
this is amazing. But it also, like people think the
American diet is, uh, this is another one. If you
make it back up there, especially on the like on
the East Coast, you gotta try beaver tail. Um. I

(27:19):
don't know, I don't know where's you've been, but but
up in Ottawa in the the market area, which is
kind of like their downtown by by the capitol, beaver
tails are are fantastic. Okay, know it actually is. A
beaver's tail or is just called the beaver so it's
just called the beaver tail. It's like maybe similar to

(27:40):
like a carbl funnel cake kind of thing, except for
you can put like different toppings on it and you
can get you know, like an apple pie one oreo.
Uh what Uh it's it's literally just a pastry with
the stuff on it and then frosting their glaze and
cinnamon and shook heard and uh all this stuff that's

(28:02):
bad for you or it makes it delicious. Yeah, kind
of like a Canadian turo if you will, and many yeah, yeah,
a little bit, a little, a little bit, although they
have different flavors, whereas the turos tend to seem to
come in and just just just the sinning. Bret mar
joined us in the Doug Outlib Show on Fox Sports Radio.
What's it like to line up and kick for the cow? Like?
First time you know you you know, you're in the

(28:25):
NFL for a minute out of Nebraska, then you're in Canada.
All of a sudden, fast track, you're placing Dan Bailey,
you line up for kicks? Like, what's that actually? Like,
I it's part of my job to be to be
honest with you. Um, the really the football part of
it hasn't changed for me, no matter no matter where

(28:46):
I've been, Um, I still have an objective when I
go out there, and and that objective is always the same. UM.
But the the environments, uh, in the the outside of
football stuff is has changed significantly for me, uh this year.
And that's that's fun. That's that's why I do. You know,

(29:06):
why I do this and why we do this because
we want to we want to be at the highest level.
We want to put ourselves against against the best opponents
and and see where we stack up. And UM, I
think that's kind of the competitor in all of us
against the Eagles. UM. What what was your before the
game started? What was your pregame number that you said

(29:27):
I'm good from? Uh, I don't go back. I think
the farthest I went back was fifty eight in warmups.
And that's you know, that's every week. That's about where
where I stopped. UM. And then you you know, you're
just kind of kind of a guessing game. As two. Okay,
I think that made it by four yards, six yards,
seven yards, UM, But that's that's kind of end of game,

(29:51):
end of half situations. I'm thinking I've got sixty two
three four in me. UM if that if that chance
are curse so UM that happened to be, you know,
towards the edge of that range, and I thought, I
thought we had a shot at it. So um happy
that coached Garrett had the confidence in me to let

(30:11):
me go out and do it. And you know, that's
that's one of those things where you don't know if
that's gonna happen again into your career. So to be
able to get one and to be able to cash
in on it was it was pretty fun. We we
had Graham Gano on and he said, he kicked a
seventy five yarder in high school. What's your what? What? What? What? What?
You're a long? I have hit from seventy four is
as long as I've ever made one from that. Uh.

(30:35):
It's kind of weird, to be honest with you, because
you're not used to seeing the ball in the air
that long. Usually it hits the net and comes down.
And it was even a little bit like that on
the on my sixty two yard or is it was
just longer anticipation then, you know, then I'm used to
used to seeing. But every once in a while it's
fun to just kind of cut it loose and see

(30:56):
how far you can actually actually get one. It feels like,
and this just me, it does feel like there are
more kickers having kind of those mental blocks mid season
than than we've we've ever had before. I guess some
of it is the the extra point rule, which is
really kind of I think completely changed football personally as
a fan for the better. I'm sure as a kicker

(31:16):
for the for the worst. Uh. But it does feel
like the kind of the mental aspect of it has
become even more supercharged here this year. Is that A
Is that a fair perspective? Or is that is that
going overboard? You know, I don't watch a lot of
games and and see, uh and see what everyone else
is doing. I'll see highlights, um and stuff like that,

(31:39):
and if you know, there are baked wonders or someone
does something really cool like like Graham's field goal earlier
in the year. UM, I was very well aware of that,
which kind of hard not to be. UM. But you know,
I think all the games are closer this year. There's
more you know, one possession, one point overtime ties like that,

(32:01):
that kind of stuff. UM. It seems like, at least
to me, UM, and that obviously puts, you know a
little more a little more pressure on the the extra point,
cashing in on three points and you know, you know,
you never want to be the guy that that left
points out there. Um, so I do you know, I
understand that, But you know, at the same time, I think, yeah,

(32:27):
I don't know. I guess. I guess it is my
best answer. I don't want to speak for everyone else,
But there there's a lot of clothes games, um, and
I think there's probably some correlation because of that. And
I also think there's a correlation and how you guys
are playing, which is faith in the kicking game, faith
as well in your defense, right, Like, look, the strength
of this team run the football played, your defense played

(32:48):
to the kicking game, um, which I would have to
think is a tip of the cap to you, right,
I mean, like you guys have won five in a row. Uh,
you know, you know, dusting teams off, you know. And
I would think that Garrett Acon, Garrett's faith in you,
that he does not have a kicking issue is at
least uh some form of compliments you know. Yeah, well
I would think so. Um, you know, I've I've had

(33:10):
a few conversations with coach since the year began, and um,
you know, I believe he has confidence in me and
I have confidence in myself, and I think that is UM.
You know, when you look towards the playoffs and finishing
up this season, UM, that's a that's a big component, um,
of of making a playoff run too. So UM, you know,
I'm I'm excited about that. I want to be involved

(33:31):
and I want to be I want to be a
reason why UH we make a deep run here in
the playoffs. I don't want to. I don't want them
to do it, you know, I want to. I want
to be I want to help with help with that
run instead of them doing it inspite of me. So UM,
I'm I'm excited for that opportunity. UM. And you know

(33:51):
we've definitely our defense is is UH is playing really well,
and our special teams units are are all all playing
pretty well as well. But are I think our offenses
is getting a little is a little underrated. Um. At
the same time, I mean, we put up a bunch
of yards, not as many points as we were hoping for, um,
but we've been able to run it. Daxton das been
phenomenal over the last a month and a half or

(34:13):
so for us and just just doing everything that he
needs to do in our offense, is putting us in
in great situations to be in games and closed him
out when we need to as well. Right, great stuff.
Congrats on making it back to the league and continued
health and success to you and uh in your family.
Thanks for joining us on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
thanks for having me. Yeah, it's you know, filling in

to be like whoever has to replace John Ramos. Whenever
John Ramos leaves and goes to Minnesota radio station, that's
just that's there's ore. There's our big shoes to fill now,
literally big shoes. Ramos. Where's the size sixteen? I'm not
sure how many people are aware of that. Their red
and they may they're actually clown shoes, but they are

(34:56):
in fact a size beside sixteen. Guess who's making changes

a lot of stuff going on. You guys know, I'm
I'm a huge bolt backer. I am really really excited

(35:41):
to see why. I just heard that, uh Ladadian Thomas
might be out tonight. Oh that part of the game. Okay,
this is game time. I'm the Doug got Leaves Show,
Dann Bye, what you got? My friend the Chargers a

(36:01):
troll job as well on social media. Yeah yeah, uh
the game today is all right, guests, who is playing tonight?
Meaning a team and made a roster move because of
injuries at the running back position. I'm gonna go with
the either team, but probably the Chiefs. The Chargers did.

(36:22):
They promoted Tremaine Pope from the practice squad because Melvin
Gordon is a game time decision with his knee injury.
Some are thinking that this may be a sign that
Gordon does not play tonight. With Austin Ekeler already out,
it could be a Jackson and Pope backfield for the
Bolts tonight. Yeah. I look, the people I've talked to
in the organization would be very surprised if Gordon played.

(36:45):
They just they thought he would be out until the
Baltimore game and this would give extra time to rest. Obviously,
they wanted to play huge part of what they do.
And Justin Jackson has been good, but he's not Melvin Gordon. Um,
and I he's kind of surprised with his willingness to
give it a go. Guess who plays for the Redskins
and also needed multiple surgeries to fight an infection following

(37:08):
surgery this season? There is Darius Joyce. Yeah. Geiss. The
Washington Post reports the l s running back needed three
procedures following the A C. L surgery to deal with
infection in that knee. Of this is all reacting to
the infection, or some of it is reacting to infection
Alex Smith has suffered, which is different from a broken bone.

(37:28):
But this is any time you go in there, you
get to run the risk of infection. I've been told
that playing is not even on the table for Alex Smith,
that it is that bad, that dire a situation. And
we still have not heard from his family that told
the Redskins they will make an announcement when when the
time comes. Guess who former Maryland at football coach DJ

(37:50):
Durkin is helping get ready for the college football playoff? Uh? Oh,
DJ Durkin. But he came from Ohio eight, didn't he?
So college ball playoff? From Michigan. He went to mary
From Michigan to Maryland. Okay, from Michigan, he went to

Uh what was the name of that? Uh? Dude? That
was the who was head coach of Tennessee who got fired,
but Jones followed Mike Locksley. So Locksley has gone to Maryland,

(38:57):
and but Jones has gone to Maryland with him, so
he's got some spots on it. Brought in sarkas in
two years back, um when Lane Kiffin was there and
used him in it. Yeah, game made the switch to
offensive coordinator. Guess who didn't give much thought to joining
the Rockets this offseason? Lebron James. Yeah. He was asked

(39:18):
about it as the Lakers take on the Rockets tonight
and was asked how much thought he gave and his
answer quote not much end quote. Yeah, that was a
lot of hype about nothing like Yeah, no, that's not
gonna work. Guess who was expected to make his season
debut tonight against the Sun's Dirk Nevitsky. Yes, Season number

so John put the ink. But no no volleyball kids

on the Duck Gottlieb Show. So here's the stephen A.
Smith thing. So he said he was getting ready for
the matchup tonight Chargers against the Chiefs, and I mean
he he butchered this thing three ways with sideways, right,
I mean really was not It was not great television. Um,

(41:04):
if you haven't seen it, I'll give you a moment
during the break and you can check it out and
get back with me. But there's a there's a way
to apologize. There's a way to go, hey, I screwed up.
You know, I don't know everything because he first he
said Spencer wear, and then Max Comman's like, oh, Spencer wears.

(41:24):
That's like, well, you know, I'm really looking forward to
seeing a Hunter Henry matchup with Derrick Johnson. Hunter Henry
obviously towards a c L the off season. Derrick Johnson
is not in the league and play with the Raiders
this year. We'll get to that. Plus a long term
plan you might not want to accept, but it's the
right one. Next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports

What Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? You ever
got caught Lyon? Have you music? You're like your your

(42:09):
eyes are averting mine? You ever you ever got? You
ever got caught Lyon? Of course recently? I don't believe recently. No, Um,
stephen A got caught Lion today And by Lyon I
mean not prepping for his job. So stephen A Smith's
on first take, Um, and he was asked, you know,

(42:32):
they were talking about tonight's Thursday night football game which
is not on air, not on air, on on ESPNS,
on Fox. Great game Chargers Chiefs should be amazing. And
you know there's a lack of buy in with the
Chargers and the easy kind of low hanging fruit could

(42:54):
have been maybe should have been very very simply could
have should have been. Ah, I don't buy the Chargers.
They've lost nine a row to the Chiefs. Just don't
buy him. Took him three field goals to beat the
Steelers cut two weeks ago. Don't buy him. But instead

(43:17):
instead he started talking about Spencer Ware who's not playing tonight,
and then he said he's looking forward to the matchup
of Hunter Henry against Derrick Johnson. Derrick Johnson of course
tours Achilles Tendon. And then when he came back, he
went he was released, and he went to the Raiders
and has been released by the Raiders. Get to the
Raiders in a moment, Hunter Henry towards a c L

(43:39):
and I've told people that I believe he'll be cleared
to our practice in the coming weeks, even though he
was supposed to be out a year. It happened so
early in O t A s. It looks like he's
gonna be back in time, but nonetheless like it's a
it's a gaff right, And the biggest mistake is if
you don't know about the two teams, you don't know

(44:02):
about him, and just don't say anything. You don't have
to you're on live TV. Just because you're on live TV,
you don't have to be substantive when called out on it.
He said my to a guy named Damien Parson or
tweeted the video that became viral. My brothers called a
mistake because I was I was think of Virgil Green,

(44:25):
but mentioned Hunter because I was multitasking. That's what happens.
You're doing a thousand things. But I don't blame you
if you told me stay off the weed. It was
a brain locked moment. The only thing worse than the
first line is the second lie. To back up the
first line. You weren't thinking of Virgil Green. There's not
really a pass catching threat. Hey, I mean, look, if

(44:47):
you're gonna go old charges, you go Antonio Gates. Technically
he still plays for the charges and they still use
them around in the red zone to potentially be an outlet.
But all you had to say was, hey, I don't
watch the chargers. Nobody watches the chargers. Nob in l
A the Low Hanging Fruit. No l A watches the chargers.
Or you know what, my bad, I didn't prep for

(45:08):
the segment. I got a million things going. I didn't
prep for the segment. But that was a and and
and look it happens. I don't even give him a
past for not prepping for a segment. He has a
radio show, he does hoop stuff, he's a grown up,

(45:29):
he lives in New York City. Like, there's a lot
of stuff going on. But the second lives verse in
the first line. But that's what happens, right, and you
go into further detail with the second line. No, I
was at Jimmie's house, and then we got order pizza
and then and no, I wasn't at Jimmie's house. I was.
I was at SI's house. But we were just hanging

(45:50):
out and we were like, no, dude, just come with
the you know what, I I don't even know what
I was thinking live TV. I wasn't prepped for it.
I said some stuff that's just dumb. I'm moving on,
and I think all of us could be like, Okay,
the Teddy Bridge with the look on the Teddy Bridgewater

(46:11):
Teddy Bruski's face was priceless. Priceless. I'll point out I
did the Final Four once after the National Championship game,
I was talking about foul trouble and I had the
wrong box score in front of me. At the halftime
box score, I was like, well, I only had two fouls.
Guy had four fouls. Had two fouls. And it's hard

(46:32):
to then admit, you know what, I made a mistake,
But sometimes you do. Anyway, It doesn't make you the
worst human being on earth, just makes just somebody who
tried to wing it. And this is also why I
have a great preparation method for anybody who's going to
talk about the entire world of the NFL. And even

(46:52):
then some of you get screwed up Madden. Play every
team in Madden and you'll be oh, I've totally forgot.
He plays for them, completely forgot. Now let's get to
the Raiders. Let's get to the Raiders. Doug Otler Show
brought to you by Discover Card. We treat you like
you treat you. Mark Davis was asked about Amari Cooper

(47:16):
and the trade of the Cowboys. Mark Davis of course
the owner of the Oakland Raiders. He was a great,
great player. We always had the fastest guy in the field,
no matter what. It just didn't work out in our system. Now,
the first thing is, I'm not sure he actually was
the fastest guy in the field. Is many people have
pointed out in addition to his hands occasionally the speed.

(47:41):
The speed was in question didn't seem to have over
the last two years. The explosiveness and while he why
he while he did expose the Philadelphia Eagles, like he's
going up against backups with the Philadelphia Eagles. But still
Mary Cooper has been a really good player. But when
he says it didn't just work in our system, here's

(48:03):
the here's the analogy you can use to explain to
people why Khalil Macki is not a Raider and why
Mary Cooper is not a Raider and why it's there
just you should be just fine with it. Romo'st Have
you ever redone? Have you redone your house? I know

(48:23):
you've lived in your house for like eighteen years. Yes,
we have redone some parts of the home inside. You
ever thought about moving? Uh, we have thought about yes.
And when you think about moving it's usually one of
two choices. You're either gonna buy something you're gonna redo,
or get something that has been redone. Right sounds about
right yet right? And then sometimes there is the tweener

(48:44):
house which has been redone, but it has been redone
like five ten years ago, and the styles have changed.
Like in the tape, it's not necessarily your taste. Well,
I look at the raiders and they remind me of
a house you walk into and you're like, you know,
I like the location, I like the size of the lot,

(49:05):
I like the I like the area around the lot,
like all those things. But but the layout is screwed up,
and it needs a new kitchen, it needs new bathrooms,
and you might even like the flooring in one room.
And basically Khalil Mack and a Marii Cooper are nice

(49:26):
rooms in a house that needed to be redone. That's it.
That's the analogy that works for it. You know, you
you walk in and you're like, man, I used to
have this. I've in two houses I've lived in that.
Granted these were East Coast houses. I had one I
had an incredible sunroom and another one I had a
great what's called a three season, three season porch, and

(49:49):
I would encourage you California, you could you have a
four season porch, but three season porch essentially is a
covered porch with like netting around it, so they keeps
sending the bugs out in the summer. And I had
a TV on it. I had an indoor outdoor sofa
on it. I used to watch Sunday football. And the
kids that go to bed out there early in the fall,
even into the fall is like cool. Chris put a

(50:10):
blanket on. It was amazing. It was amazing, but didn't
make up for if I didn't like the rest of
the house. Right, the flooring in one room doesn't mean hey,
look if you need a new kitchen, if you need
if or for the Raiders, their wiring was all screwed up,
Their pipes were all screwed up. Who cares even what

(50:32):
the kitchen looks like. If you've got all kinds of
electrical issues, get it down to the studs and start over.
That's what they're doing. And so people are sitting there going,
you know, it's like a you've seen these farmhouse sinks.
Farmhouse farmhouse sink is the new style of singing. Now.
The truth is that the two sided sinks, which aren't

(50:55):
as sexy I feel like, are better, right you, but
the dirty dishes on one side, then clean them in
the other. But oh, every all the rage now with
designers one big kind of farmhouse sink with like a
little apron over the top. You're like, oh, man, I
don't know if you want to redo this kitchen. It's
got a great farmhouse sink, Like yeah, but it's completely

(51:16):
closed off room. The cabinetry is screwed up. You have
no disposal. You gotta where to say. That's what they are.
What we're forgetting about the Raiders is they were bad
football team. It wouldn't to fire Jack del Rio. If
they were a good football team, they wouldn't. You have

(51:40):
to get that out of You're like, wow, you know
they had these two guys. Yeah, and next year Khalil
Mack's new contract would have come to be, and next
year Marie Cooper is gonna make fourteen and a half
million dollars. There's actually an incredible amount of foresight and
thought into the look. I understand that it feels like
Amari Cooper was the fastest guy in the field. And

(52:02):
why is Mark Davis saying all these great things about him.
He didn't fit in our system. He should fit into
everybody's system. What he's really saying is, look, we're gonna
gut the house. Sorry, we gutted that. Sorry, we took
out that sunroom that you like. We apologize for knocking
out the farmhouse sink. We'll get your new sinc. A
farmhouse sinc. Does not a perfect kitchen make. Flooring in

(52:26):
the dining room does not a perfect house make. You
gotta have the right layout, you gotta have the right wiring,
the right plumbing. I don't care what your backyard looks like,
but if it's not, if it doesn't have the right drainage,
anytime it rains, it's gonna get flooded. And I think

(52:47):
people are screwed up in their assumption that you have
these two nice, bright, shiny things. Why didn't you hold
onto them and build them as assets, because it's not
how you built a football team, not for the short
or long term. What they could have done was, you know,
by Ramos's house, which she's talked about, like, look, we
do we did some stuff here, we do did some
stuff there, but this is this is my wife's what

(53:10):
she's taught me. She's like, look, you don't really want
to have something redone in two thousand ten, something redone
in two thousand eighteen, and something because you then you
end up read doing the thing you read it in
two thousand eighteen. Like do it all once or don't
do it so it all has the same theme, and
be very careful of being late to trends. Right, the

(53:31):
all white stuff was super trendy in kitchens, and now
it's moving on to different colors and different patterns, and
the browns are coming back. Same thing. In the NFL.
The pattern of overpaying quarterbacks might not be a good one.
Look at how many of the young quarterbacks or quarterbacks
under club control making less money are more valuable because

(53:54):
they might not be as good as the other guys,
but they can spread that money around. NFL insider Edward

Fox Sports Radio. Edward Or is an NFL insider. He
joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,

(55:00):
and we got a ton of things to get to,
but health a huge concern. Melvin Gordon supposedly a game
time decision. My insiders had said they're even surprised he's
gonna try and give it a go. What do you
think the like good is he placed the night narrowhead. Well, first,
I think it's worth noting that the head coach is
Anthony Lynn, and he himself is a former running back.

(55:22):
He recognizes, obviously the value of Melvin Gordon, who's responsible
for about thirty five of their total offense. And while
this is a huge game, uh in terms of a
regular season, you know, making a determination on whether the
Chiefs clinch or clutch a division title or not, in
all likelihood the Charger are gonna have bigger games to

(55:43):
play going forward. Now, all of that being said, I
talked to the Chargers this morning, UH, and I was
told that Gordon was feeling much better today than the
team had expected, and so that was going to make
this decision that much more difficult than it truly is
a game time decision. We saw him working out on
the field prior to last week's game, which they knew

(56:04):
from the beginning he was not going to play. But
you know, keep in mind, this player has a lot
of value to them. We saw the angst with which
Philip Rivers reacted when he hurt the knee, when he
sprained the mcl in his knee, UH, in a meaningless
situation where you could argue we should have even been
on the field given the score of the game at
the time. So I would expect them to be quite

(56:25):
conservative with this decision, even as much as it seems
this game means tonight. I mean, they can have home
field advantage throughout like that's legitimately a possibility for this
this football team if they win tonight. I'm with you,
you know, long term versus short term, And what people
forget was he was also coming off a knee sprain
when he got hurt on the on the double verse

(56:47):
to begin with, right. But and Austin Ekeler, obviously the
backup and who is a key third down player out
of the backfield, also out of this game with a concussion.
So if Gordon can't play, then the next guy up
as a rookie seventh round pick named Justin Jacksons did
bring up another running back from the practice squad, But
there will be a humongous drop off if Melvin Gordon

(57:08):
doesn't play in this game. What about the Chiefs? No,
Sammy Watkins, right, No, No Spencer where Tyreek Hill now
is is going to play? But but he's gimpy. Doesn't
feel like they're they're going to be putting their best
foot forward either. Yeah, and you're right about you. It It
would be interesting to see what kind of explosive speed
Tyree Hill has and how long he can be effective

(57:31):
with that foot injury, because he was really one of
the big probably the biggest difference maker in the Week
one game between these two teams, which the Chiefs won
by ten points. You know, Tyreek Hill had a fifty
plus yard touchdown, catching at a ninety one yard punt
return for a touchdown, and another touchdown on top of that,
so three touchdowns at all. So that's very significant part

(57:52):
of their offense, especially given that they you know, they
don't have Kareem Hunt anymore, they don't have Sammy Watkins anymore.
And yet despite all of this, Patrick o'mahomes seems just
as unstoppable as he's ever been. If you just look
at what he did last week against the Baltimore Ravens
defense that came in ranked number one in the league
and scoring defense. They've led the league in that category

(58:13):
all year long. They've stopped the number of big time quarterbacks,
including Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger, and they go after
they play. Patrick Mahomes are no longer than number one
defensive football anymore. The ranked number two now Edward are
joining us in the Dougout Leaves Show. You can fall
them on Twitter at Edward or r f A and
check out the Doomsday podcast. Carson Wentz has got UM,

(58:35):
a transverse fracture, right, UH, isn't that the same thing
that Tony Romo had? It is a transverse process fracture.
Is a relatively minor back injury on the scale of
back injuries, which of course are significant for any football player,
especially a quarterback. But from from my experience and covering

(58:58):
players who have had these injuries, they're very short term
in nature and there's no long term issue going forward
that uh the Eagles should be concerned about with this
type of fracture. Tony Romo missed one game with it,
Brad Johnson missed one game with it. Derek Carr had
it UH either last year or the year before. UH.

(59:20):
So quarterbacks, it's a common injury among quarterbacks. There's a
lot of pain involved, but there are no long term
consequences uh in terms of, like, you know, a player
developing the sort of more serious back injuries that Romo
did later in his career, the compression fracture UH that
l ultimately ended his career, and the back injuries that
Troy Aikman had long before that that ultimately ended his career.

(59:41):
And no people associate concussions with the end of Aikman's career.
So and this is a big year for the Eagles
obviously because uh, you know, Carson missed all of a
lot of last year with the A c L tearucurge
just about a year ago now, and this is the
first time this offseason where they can extend his contract.
And it'll be interesting to see if they still have
those same willingness to commit long term, big money to

(01:00:04):
the quarterback who seems obviously destined to be a star
in the league. Yeah, and it's interesting, you know, you
get this rep as being injury prone. Uh people forget that.
You know, Romo broke his collarbones several times. You mentioned
he had a different back injury. He had several other
back injuries than the transverse as opposed to Carson. Wentz like,
I don't think your injury prone. If you tear your

(01:00:24):
A c L and then you have a little chip
bone in your back, are you it's just a it's
a consequence of your profession and uh uh, you're the
position that you play. I mean it's a it's a
violent game and and probably nobody gets hit more often
or with more ferocity than the quarterbacks, even as much
as the new league's and and the NFL seeks to
protect them. Odell Beckham Jr. Had his quad evaluated. He

(01:00:49):
said he's unsure if he's gonna play. He said he's
getting better, but ain't ain't right just just yet. That
was the official diagnosis. Yes, yes, Blank, ain't right. You
ain't right? Um? What what? How did? How did giants
feel about O b J? Last time we saw him
on the field, that's when he got out of the way.
He made the business decision on side kick. How do

(01:01:10):
they legitimately feel about him? You know, I'm sure they
feel like, uh, they were somewhat deceived by the way
he handled the offseason, you know, trying to negotiate a
new contract with the general manager, first year general manager,
and Dave Gettlman uh and a new coach and and
Pat Shermer was on his best behavior, got what he wanted. Uh.

(01:01:32):
Then has obviously made a lot of critical remarks about
the organization, about his quarterback, Eli Manning. And now he's
out of one and possibly more games than that with
a quad recepts contusion. While you know, the team's actually
played better in his absence than than it has when
he was with him, I would think that there's some

(01:01:54):
giants who are arching and eyebrow about his physical condition
and his his ability to play in these games. What
do the Jaguars do in the offseason with whom fire everybody?
I don't know that that Tom Coughlin is is disappointing
as this season is. Uh. And I can't imagine how

(01:02:14):
mad he was watching the film of the of the
Titans loss and Derrick Henry, you know, running all over
his defense in a situation where it appeared there was
no real effort and no commitment to making tackles on
a defense that was one of the best in the
NFL last year. That being set, I don't think Tom's
a guy with a with a quick trigger in terms

(01:02:36):
of making long term changes. I know he he has
a very similar philosophy to head coach Doug Morone. So
I don't think they'll they'll make a head coaching change.
Will they sign Jalen Ramsey long term? Uh? This is
his first offseason of such eligibility. I don't know U.
Will they I don't think they'll plan on Blake Bortle's
being their starting quarterback going forward, so it'll be a

(01:02:57):
season of upheaval in Jacksonville, Uh, for those reasons and
because they're up against the cap. Let's let's get to
the Dallas Cowboys, who suddenly are not only UH gonna
win their division, but one of the hottest teams in
the Nation Football League. And yet you still have those moments.
The first three quarters attack were not good, fourth quarter
deck was was amazing. Um. What what is his value

(01:03:19):
going to be when they ultimately redo his contract? Well,
you know, Jerry Jones has been pretty steadfast and saying
that he is going to sign Dak Prescott to an
extension UM, and he has supported him throughout a you know,
a season that began with a three and five start. UM.
So I I have no doubt Jerry wants to keep

(01:03:41):
him as his starting quarterback, beliefs fully in him. But
what he hasn't said is what level of of you know,
salary he's gonna pay him. Is he gonna pay him
like a top five quarterback? Top ten, top fifteen would
be more my sense of it. Uh. I don't think
they'll make a coaching change now unless they really fall
apart here and you know, win the division or embarrassed

(01:04:01):
themselves in an early round playoff game. I think Jason
Garrett will be the head coach going forward, and I
think I think DA's got to prove that he can
be a part of a championship football team, and in
recent weeks he hasn't really appeared that way. I think
they have that ability on defense. I think they have
that ability at the wide receiver position with the Marii Cooper,

(01:04:25):
and I have no doubt they have it at the
running back position with Ezekiel Elliott leading the league in touches.
But if they're going to succeed as a team, Dak
Prescott's got to get back to the quarterback he was
UH for for the previous two seasons, which was a
guy who managed the game smartly and didn't commit turnovers.
Now he's been sacked forty eight times, most in the NFL.
He's got a league high twelve fumbles. Uh. He he

(01:04:48):
turned a one sided statistical game into a game that
the Cowboys could have easily lost at home and overtime
last week. So he's got to improve his level of
play going forward. If they're gonna do anything in the
upcoming post seas him. Who's the next coaching Green Bay?
I'm sorry, coach in Green Bay. Um. Wow, that's hard
to say. Uh, it'll be. It'll be a coveted job,

(01:05:11):
I think because of of Aaron Rodgers presence there and
the fact that you could probably you know, rely on
him for the next five years. I'll be interested to
see if a guy like Josh McDaniels kenby Lord one
of the one of the things that tempted him last
year was the chance to coach Andrew Luck when he
took the job in Indianapolis and then ultimately decided to

(01:05:32):
change his mind and stay with Tom Ready and the Patriots.
But that might be the right kind of job because
one of his concerns, based on his his only other
head coaching experience in Denver, which was a horrible one
by uh in his mind, was he didn't like the
ownership situation. He didn't like the general manager situation that
was kind of chosen for him. So all of those
things are unique in Green Bay, and you'd have a

(01:05:54):
chance obviously to win, and there's no interference from the
front office in terms of ownership getting involved in football decision.
This is a weird way to go because I don't
know if anybody has asked you about the Bengals but um,
in any other job, Marvin Lewis probably would have been
fired last offseason. But he talked to people in the NFL,
and they're like, given, it's the Bengals. The Bengals are
different than any other any other job, and they don't

(01:06:16):
appear to be that many rumblings. And they're actually actually
played really well against the Chargers last week. They're five
and eight. They've had a terrible defense, but they fired
their defensive coordinator. Do they make a move? Does anybody
have any sense of what Cincinnati does in in the
near future? Well, I mean a lot of people thought
when Hugh Jackson went back there that that indicated the

(01:06:36):
you know, possibility that uh, he would ultimately get Marvin
Lewis's job, even though he had failed so miserably as
a head coach in Cleveland, because he was the event
he was anointed the eventual successor to Marvin when he
was on Marvin's staff previously. Um, No, nobody really can
predict what Mike Brown will do. He obviously values familiarity overall, uh,

(01:06:58):
certainly over excellence. Although I think we tend to forget
just how bad the Bengals were before Marvin Lewis got there, um,
And I don't think you can completely absolve Marvin Lewis
of the historic failure on the defensive side of the
ball that caused him to make a change at the
coordinator position during the season, given that that's his orientation.
He came into the league as a defensive coach, so uh,

(01:07:21):
he'll be held accountable on that side of the ball
as well. But you know, now they've lost a j
Green the gloss quarterback Andy Dalton, So what level of
forgiveness and how Mike Brown views all of that as
he evaluates the need for a coaching change, I think
remains to be determined. Awesome stuff. Check out his doomsday

(01:09:31):
You know the thing about the Carson Wentz interview is fascinating,
is um? You do we remember we had Matt Holiday
on and I don't know if Holiday is gonna play
this upcoming off season or not this upcoming season or not.
Remember he came back after battling through depression and um
and made it all the way back to the Colorado

(01:09:52):
Rockies and helped them on their run to the playoffs
in the playoffs as well. And I'll never forget that.
He's told me this time and again, like look when
I when he was out with the Cardinals during his
last year with the Cardinals, he missed time because he
had a broken thumb right and he broke that thumb

(01:10:16):
getting hit with a fastball the year before, he did
have a thigh he pulled a thigh muscle, and so
and if you looked at, you know, the last four
years of his career, you know this is even for
when he went to the Yankees, he came down with

(01:10:37):
a virus that was later determined to be um what
is it mercury poisoning. It was crazy. But before he
signed with the Yankees, never forget, we had a conversation
on air at my other place, and he was like, look,

(01:10:57):
I broke my thumb. Like, I don't understand how that's
being injury prone. It's a job hazard. I get a
fastball on the thumb, it breaks. I tried to get
out of the way, but it had late kind of
movement and caught me by surprise. My bad. Yeah, I
had a thigh injury that kept me out of games.
But I was also he was also on base the

(01:11:17):
first forty four games of the previous year before he
heard his before he pulled his thigh muscle. The point
is that if you look at Carson Wentz and you
want to go like, whoa can't stay healthy, can't stay healthy?
Torn a c L, that's that's a problem. But when
you have a broken transverse process, that's just getting hit

(01:11:39):
in the back and a bone breaking off right, that's
not not signed the brew bone. It's not sign of
being injury prone. That's sign of, you know, working in
a job where you're gonna occasionally get a helmet in
an area where it might break a bone, especially a
small piece of a vertebrate, and when that breaks off,
this is what happens. And he could in fact play

(01:12:01):
through it. They just don't want him to, like it's
not worth it. Let foals go, see if it heals,
see how it goes. So I guess I'm supposed to
bail on Wenz, who would have been the league's m
v P. But I told you guys yesterday. Look, it's
three seventy eight days removed from when he tours a
c that's it. He usually takes you a year to

(01:12:23):
get back, a year to be healthy. He's also lost
some of his play college from last year. His offensive
line isn't as good. We told you this entire offseason.
Heavy as the head that wears the Crown gonna be
harder this season because everybody's gunning for you. You're everyone's
biggest game. Heck, the Rams plan this week and go

(01:12:46):
all over Los Angeles. Way say, defending Super Bowl champion
Philadelphia Eagles coming to town but not even gonna make
the playoffs. But because they won the Super Bowl, there's
still everybody's biggest, biggest game, all right, coming up next,
Colin Coward would take Andrew Luck over Pat Mahomes. He

(01:13:06):
set it in front of an open microphone and set
it again two or three times. Me he says everything
to or three times. I'll give you my thoughts next.

of this time in the Doug gotlieps, shall we play
for you a portion of a previous show Fox Sports One,
Fox Sports Radio. Um, this is Colin Cowherd earlier today
discussing Andrew Luck and why he prefers luck luck to
Pat Mahomes. Why is Andrew Luck with no support, a

(01:14:51):
bad GM, a terrible coach get heat despite amazing win
loss records and accomplishments and Patrick Mahomes. It's crickets. Why
because one guy is a headband and another guy is
a neck beard. One guy is fun and flashy. One
guy's got a flip phone, one guy's got a little nightclub,

(01:15:14):
one guy has a book club. One guy's cool, one
guy's not. One guy's no. Look Andrew Lux always look,
that's what we keep doing. Fallen for the flashy. I'm
not saying Patrick Mahomes isn't really good. He's not Andrew Luck.
It's a it's a fascinating comparison. I will tell you

(01:15:37):
this that I talked to somebody in the Bears front
office and they were like, look, we knew Mahomes had
a super high ceiling. But you had to remember is
we didn't have the stability that Can't City had with
Alex Smith. We you know, had Mike Glennon, who obviously
was upset at the draft pick. And we knew whoever
we got would have to play day, we would have

(01:15:58):
to play sometime in their first year. And we just
thought Mitchell Robinsky was a little safer, a little safer
ceiling wasn't his high floor wasn't as low I think
it was a mistake because Mahomes has so much more
talent and it's so much more accurate than Trabinsky, who's
kind of an athlete back there learning the position because
he played so little in college. But there was also

(01:16:19):
something else he told me. He's like, look, Mahomes says,
a tendency to miss meetings, the tency to be flighty,
as a tensey to be to not be risk averse.
In terms of his passes. My only issue is, and look,
Andrew lux turned the ball over a ton during his
last couple of years before he was injured last year
as a quarterback. My thing with Mahomes is while we

(01:16:41):
fall in love with the no look pass and throwing
across his body and the arm strength and everything, like,
you can't turn the football over the playoffs. You turned
the football over the playoffs, and you're going to get beat.
That's the way it goes. And so i'm i'm I'm
concerned with how it plays when they play better defenses.
They played better defenses, now the sudden we could be

(01:17:03):
in for a lot of trouble. And even if you
look at the performance that everyone's talking about the Game
of the Year, my homes through a couple of picks
trying to force footballs in. Also, didn't he fumble in
that game as well? The thing is it's not all
his fault, but not being risk averse at all is

(01:17:25):
a sign of youth and the sign of talent. But
also what has tendency to get you beat when you're
playing in the National Football League in games that really matters? Yes, yes,
since this is essentially Pat mahomes is rookie season, are
we getting a little too carried away with the idea

(01:17:46):
that he could have what would technically be his third
year but like a sophomore slump next season that we
see a lot from other quarterbacks once teams become more
adjusted to their tendencies. Well, I mean, look, I think
that we're going to see in a Ustmine here as
we get later on the year. I thought they had
a really they had a really good running game. You
lose your star running back who leads the league in rushing.

(01:18:09):
And also, is there's a reason we see this from Pittsburgh, Like,
do I like James Conner? Yes? Is James Conner great story? Yes?
Is James Connor Levyan Bell? No? No? And the the
same is true. With the Kansas Chiefs, now Spencer wear
is not gonna play tonight, and he's the backup, but

(01:18:31):
he was the backup for a reason. I don't know
if they have Sammy Watkins, and I don't love Sammy Watkins.
That was he making sixteen million dollars a year, your
fourth best wide fourth fourth best wide receiver. And they
have Tyreek Hill and he's gonna play. And they have uh,
Travis Kelsey, who's amazing, and he's gonna play. You're like, wow,

(01:18:51):
we're fine, you're not. All of it kind of works together.
All of it works in concert, and so when you're
missing a key element, other things have it ten. That's
no different than what happened with the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys
trade for Mari Cooper and suddenly everybody is more effective.

(01:19:13):
Everybody's more effective. So I look at it and, um,
I frankly, honestly believe that they will be a little bit.
There'll be a little bit of regression here these last
couple of games of the season. And wouldn't stun me
if there were some struggles in the playoffs. Of course,

(01:19:35):
I've will will willingly predicted that the Chiefs will lose
early in the playoffs. That's just because of the Chiefs, Right,
that's like predicting the Chargers will screw it up because
the special teams. That's just because the Chargers. If you
had whence Golf and Mahomes, who do you think? Not close?

(01:19:56):
Don't think he's what the other two guys are. Um.
The one thing Golf has is he is really really steady.
He's just he doesn't seem to have a lot of
emotion either way. But I don't think he's the quarterback.
The other two are the ones thing. It's the injuries
do start to Pola like, all right, look, I'm willing
to give you transverse process is just getting hit in

(01:20:17):
the back and the A c L could happen to anybody, Um,
and maybe you won't scramble as much. Mahomes has far
and away the most armed talent, like freaky, freaky level
of stuff. And I think he's gonna get better even
better with his football like you and and and the
chances he takes. I would go Golf third. Like I

(01:20:38):
think people are missing that Golf has had several games here.
He hasn't played well. Everyone like you didn't play well
in Chicago. He didn't play well against Detroit. It's a
bad team in a dome, um and he has incredible weapons,
incredible weapons. Ramos accurate, inaccurate thoughts on golf, very accurate. Yes,

(01:21:01):
I agree with that. That's why three let's see, that's
why Ramos is hard to replace, because nobody appreciates me
much like Ramos appreciate. Hey, I agree with you when
you're right, Doug, there you go? Do you guys see
Michael Jordan's uh uh smack Malik Monk upside the head
last night? Was that great? Or? What what are you doing?

(01:21:23):
And then he missed the first time he did his
like that are you doing? Uh? Michael Jordan called the
tap on the back of Ahead a tap of endearment. Huh. Yeah,
it was big brother, little brother, No negative intent, only
love because Jeremy Lamb hit it three with point three
seconds ago and my link Monk lost his mind ran

(01:21:45):
on the court. Uh, it's Michael Jordan. Like, Michael Jordan
literally could have smacked him with another body part and
people were like, it's Michael Jordan's you ever had a coach?
Let's do something somewhat physical with you in nature? No
grab you by the Jersey or something like that. I
don't think so. But I wasn't as much. I wasn't

(01:22:07):
as by my dad brought my dad yet. Uh. I
don't think I was as much. I was as bothered
by some guys like go, don't touch me, Like all right,
he's up there, cowboy, he's up you know, don't touch me.

game first. Um, a lot of personnel out for both sides.
Is that why the over under seems low at fifty three? Well?

(01:24:16):
I also think the Chargers have a good defense, and
we were talking about this on Straight Out of Vegas.
Let me ask you this question, Doug and get your
your take on it. I would make the case amongst
the best teams in the NFL, the Chargers have the
least weaknesses. If you went down and said, what is
the weakness of the Rams right against the run? Very weak?

(01:24:39):
All right, what's the way you know we could go
down the list Kansas City below average defense. What's the
Chargers weakness. I'd say probably linebackers, uh special teams, although
Badgety was good last week and me kicked a kicked
a franchise long UH field goal. Um, I don't I

(01:25:03):
just lack of history. They haven't done it right. I agree,
And I also think the coach, at least theoretically we
consider bottom quarter of the league and in close games
in the playoffs that matter. But to me, you look
at the Chargers losses. Obviously they lost against the Case
and got in that first game was with my Homes

(01:25:26):
was a real shocker, and we know Andy Reid early
is able to scheme up early in the season very effectively.
They lost to the Rams. So I look at this
Chargers team and I see, you know, and when they
lost to Denver it was really just a lot of
bad luck in that game. I would make the case
the Chargers are as good as anyone right now. And

(01:25:46):
the fact that we have Kansas City off a two
straight non covers since Kareem Hunt in that incident. I
don't know if it's it's his absence on the field.
I don't know if it's a distraction off the field.
Kansas City doesn't seem quite as good, and I think
the Chargers are a little bit more rested. They haven't
had really tough games. They cruised against the Banks. I

(01:26:09):
know it was close, but they were in control of
that game. And then Kansas City had a war that
went to overtime against the Ravens, and we're getting three
and a half. I think Chargers a lot of value. Tonight,
Doug Gotlive show Fox Sports Traits Funny you and I
had a Charger discussion where you couldn't buy in early
in the year, Yes, and and suddenly you kind of

(01:26:31):
come around my way. And I think they're getting Hunter
Henry back in the next couple weeks. And I don't
know if Melvin Gordon plays tonight, but he's gonna play
in the future barring another injury. I think, like, look,
they could have home field advantage about the playoffs, or
they could have the second best record and be a
wild card. Right, So what I what I would say
is this, You're absolutely right, We've had one of our
best seasons, and uh, it's worth repeating or saying once

(01:26:55):
is We're in the Super Contest Gold five thousand dollar entry,
biggest contact NFL in the world, and we are now
one game out of first place, only one team ahead
of us winner take all sixty thousand three. You know,
obviously three weeks left, so we've had a great season.
That said, I was way off on the Chargers. I

(01:27:16):
felt like and I was feeling pretty smart when they
were one and two. But this team has proven me wrong,
and like I said, one of the best teams. I think,
where are you on the Cowboys? I think that the
Cowboys are still a little underrated. Now that's gonna sound
surprising because Dallas is such a public team. When they
when they play well, they tend to get overrated. But

(01:27:39):
but we talked about it last week, so I'll keep
it short. I think because they're so young on defense
that the trend line is so strong, the stats back
in September don't mean as much, and because of that,
I just think Dallas today is a lot better than
the season long stats. And obviously this is an emotional team.
Jerry Jones makes the Cowboys Amos final, which means when

(01:28:01):
they're winning, it tends to feed upon itself, and when
they're losing, it tends to feed upon itself. So I
like that they're winning, and I like that they're trending upwards.
So I'm probably a little higher on the Cowboys than most.
All right, what about the Colts team they take on
this weekend? The same thing. I want to buy both
of these teams. I mean, one of the most flabber
gasting game. And what I'll kind of do is, whoever

(01:28:22):
loses this game is better next week. When you have
two teams you want to play on, don't and they're
playing each other, don't force it, let him play. Whoever
loses is gonna have less shine on them, right, and
next week there's probably extra value. The flip side, Doug,
two teams you want to play against, play, let him play.
Whoever wins play against them the next week, right. So

(01:28:45):
I want to play both of these teams. And the
game that I just can't figure out is that Jacksonville game.
Because if you look at Andrew Luck and you look
at the last six or seven weeks, he's playing as
well as any quarterbacks ever played in the history of
the NFL. I mean, he's right there, que you are
wise whatever. And then they go in and get shut
out in a big division game against Jacksonville. That made

(01:29:07):
me think, oh, what's different here? But then they look great,
you know, obviously upset against Houston. So to me, there's
always gonna be aberrations in the season. But if you
look the last six or seven weeks, Coats one of
the best offenses the NFL and an improving defense. So
I'm let's just say high on Coats and Cowboys, which

(01:29:27):
means I won't be batting it. Doug Gotlib show here
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, Cleveland going into Denver. Um, Look, Denver,
you know, it's it feels like they're at home every week,
doesn't it? Like, man, from the start of the season.
In the season, it feels like they're at home every week.
But I look at Denver and I think they're overvalued
this thing. I just do. They got a couple of

(01:29:49):
very fortunate wins, like you point out, the Chargers win
and even the Steelers win, and now they don't have
Emmanuel Sanders. They were disaster last week, just got destroyed
by the Niners. Meanwhile, the Brown it's only talented playing
good football. Am I crazy to thank the Browns straight
after you go in and beat the Broncos? Well, I
agree with you straight up. Yeah, but listen that you

(01:30:11):
know we're getting three. Actually, unfortunately it's down to two
and a half. It was three just yesterday. And I
love the Browns at three. Uh, lean that way at
two and a half. And here was the rationale. We
talked about trend lines. Since Hugh Jackson left, the team
was escorted off the premises, Baker Mayfield has the fourth

(01:30:32):
best d v o A for a quarterback in the NFL. Right,
if you look at Denver's trend line is after some
fortunate wins. And remember that Steelers game, Denver was out
gained by more yards than any team that week the
entire NFL. Than that yardage, they still won turnovers. Obviously.
Now we might say, oh that skill, you know, ball

(01:30:53):
hawking defense, b s. It's not. History tells us. The
numbers tell us defenses that get a lot of turnovers,
you would expect that to continue the next year. It doesn't.
That tells you it's just luck. So what I look
at here is if you add in them losing their cornerback,
a couple of weeks ago and how badly their defense look.

(01:31:15):
You add in Sanders as you mentioned being out. I
think you've got a team that was lucky to win
some games that's now not the same team they were
even three weeks ago. Way overrated. I think Denver and
it's the dream crusher. There odds to make the playoffs
now the Broncos less than five percent. What are they
playing for? Cleveland's playing for redemption to finish the year

(01:31:36):
and kind of say, see, once Hugh Jackson was gone,
we have been good and that's gonna lead to a
good offseason. So I see Brown's playing hard, and I
questioned Denver's motivation. Green Bay takes on Chicago rematch the
first game of the season where the Bears of the
big lead and Aaron Rodgers did the seemingly impossible came
back won the game. They look different with the coaching

(01:31:57):
changed last week. Bears come in up a win, but
where Mitchell Robinski played poorly in that in that win,
what do you like? I tell you this if you
would have asked me, And it's a good exercise for
those that take the NFL seriously. Before you look at
the lines, make your own line real quick, just run
down the schedule. Whatever you're you're, you're, you're Malcolm Gladwell blink.

(01:32:20):
Instinct is I would have made this line four. Yeah, yeah,
at four, I would have loved the Bears. The fact
that six is telling me my instincts were right that
that that that the Bears were the side of four.
And I think that everyone sees Aaron Rodgers had an
adject or had a hyper motivation to make a statement

(01:32:43):
the first game post McCarthy. But now you have all
the emotion of the firing, all the emotion of oh,
we're gonna fire this twelve year assistant because he said
something on Twitter. Then you win the game, which quite frankly,
green Bay got out gained in that game right of
probably the score wasn't indicative of what happened on the field.

(01:33:03):
And now you've got a road game against a team
that was sitting at home had a nice win. Maybe
we'll be flat in some spots, but it's not gonna
be flat with revenge and Aaron Rodgers coming to town.
I think Green Bay's tired, and I think Aaron Rodgers
has made his point, so obviously they're gonna try hard.
I just think last week was a little deceiving. It
was a little advantageous for green Bay this week, I

(01:33:25):
think is this advantageous for green Bay? So I would
lean Bears. I just think it's too expensive to beat it,
all right, I'd be I'd be very very careful, very
careful on pointing out that the Falcons, you know, out
game in yards scored thirteen fourth quarter points when they're
down I think thirty four to seven. That game was
a complete and total throttling. Um. That's the catch twenty

(01:33:46):
two though, do those teams just not care, like, like,
how do you rate the yardage? Because if and this
is a debate we have all the time, I mean
you are right in the center of it right now.
Is if you just look at the scoreboard, we know deceiving.
So if you're gonna go into the stats now we're
gonna say the stats are deceiving, then what is it
that we can objectively use the sess these games. It's

(01:34:09):
a great point, listen, It's it's a great point. You do.
I think there's other status, other stats, but I mean
anyone can point out the hollows. This is that like
the classic Matt Stafford game where you have you know,
for Matt Ryan, where you have three touchdown pass like, yeah,
you had two in the fourth quarter when you're getting crushed.
And and I would agree. I think over a season,
I think yards mean a lot. In a given game,

(01:34:30):
you've got to look deeper. I don't know how much
yards mean. I think yards for play yards, red zone.
If you don't if you don't get yards, yeah, or
but if you turn the football over you get down big,
then you crew a lot of yards. Thinking dunk, marching mark,
marching down football field, our our cup more? Uh, quickies
on this one, Patriots taken on the Pittsburgh Steelers Patriots

(01:34:53):
or two and a half point favorites um as of
right now, and again based on hunt on how what
you told me? That means that the Patriots are playing
at home, there'd be eight and a half point favorites
to the Steelers. Uh, that's exactly right. And and and
I think a lot of this is this history. Oh,
Pats have always handled Pittsburgh. And it's true, let's be

(01:35:16):
candid to me as a Steelers fan. And and and
I know that you know everyone on talk radio has
been talking about Tomlin. I think Tomlin is a great
old school coach. If this was pre Bill wall Shot,
you know, let's say, revolutionizing the game intellectually, I would
say Tomlin's a top five coach. If we could go

(01:35:38):
back in time in two thousand and eighteen, analytics, advanced thinking,
the meta game, all that stuff is so much more
important than it used to be. And I think that's
a deficiency. I don't even think it's a question is
he good at it? I think he's well below average
Tomlin at those things. Who's the best of those things? Belichick?
And to me, that's why Pittsburgh is one of the

(01:35:59):
main reasons they've struggled against New England. Now, as a
fan of the Steelers, I can tell you this, there's
two times they have bad games. One is when they're
not motivated. And when they aren't motivated one game and
they they're motivated the next they tended surprise. We've seen
the ebb and flow of the Steelers over the years
under Tomlin. Another thing is when there's a fundamental problem.

(01:36:20):
I look at this and I know for sure the
Steelers should have been motivated against against the Chargers and
they still lost. And I know for sure after losing
that game, they should have been motivated against the Raiders
and they still lost. To me, it doesn't feel like
it's motivation. It feels like a fundamental problem. They can't
run the ball. And it looked like it was okay

(01:36:42):
for a while. But now if you're one dimensional against
the Patriots, forget about it. You've got to be multiple
against the past. One last thing, Steelers one of the
worst defenses post Shayser against the tight end, and Gronk,
though he had the problem defensively, had a hack of
a game last week, no question, no question about linebackers

(01:37:03):
and coveragees has been a problem. And you know, look
even the even the uh the charges were able to
point that out using keenan Allen where normally use a
tight end. R J Bell pregame dot Com exclusive ods provider,

Last year, Champagne, I was actually walking through the Booze
aisle and I was like, oh um, Champagne like, yeah,

(01:38:29):
I think I did that last year. How long did
how long? Do you wait before you drink the champagne?
I mean we a little over a week because I
think I did it on New Years Ramo's YouTube. New
Year's is always a good time to pop it open. Good. Yeah,
I'm not a champagne person, but I appreciate the thoughts,

(01:38:50):
so that's a no. I liked it well. I mean,
I'm not a champagne person, so if it was the
best champagne in the world, I probably wouldn't know. I understand.
I understand your honesty. Okay, it's not really how you're
supposed to respond to a present. That's the famous how
was it? I've had better, better, better? It wasn't bad,

(01:39:14):
but you know i've better. I mean, I'll be honest
with you. It's not the best champagne in the world.
It's it's expensive champagne. It wasn't cheap champagne. I didn't
get you champana. I get champagne. And it was it was.
It was with the yellow label, right, yellow label. Yeah,
it was appreciated. It's it's good. It was. It actually
was the thought that counts because remember the one you
got me, Oh that would be nice, which I honestly

(01:39:37):
not expected. Next my My wife asked me today, She's like,
what would you like? And I swear when I answered this,
I have everything I possibly about except for a pool.
That's really unless I can wake up and there's a
pool finished in my backyard. There's nothing else that I want.

(01:39:58):
Nothing else. Oh, k well, there's a couple of things,
but nothing that of Christmas or hanukkah or or Kwanzo worthy.
George kill joined just in the Doug Gottlieb Show. If
is there anything you need for Christmas for me? Yeah? Um,
I can go for a new Xbox controller. Did you

(01:40:20):
did you get mad and throw it? Or is it
just not connecting properly? Do you need new batteries? Like
be let let me know which this Xbox one? Right?
You're not still doing three sixty, are you on? I
mean I could use an Xbox one controller and headset. Um,
I'm pretty sure Bethard through it. The last time is
at my house. C J By The quarterbacks are just
they just so entitled, you know that's really what it is.
Did where did you did you actually throw it accurately? Oh? Yeah,

(01:40:43):
you hit me r in the chest with it? Probably
very very nice when you play, do you are you
are you Fortnite guy? Are you doing? Are you doing Madden?
What are you doing? I'm actually the worst Madden player
of all time. I'm I'm pretty decent at a Rocket League.
I don't know if you ever heard, Yes it's I
was gonna mention Rocket League, but I was like my
nine year old sons like Dad, like, because we're kind
of in the not anti Fortnite, but we're like, we
don't get Fortnite. You can go play at your friend's house.

(01:41:05):
We're not gonna become a zombie. And he's like, you
know what, there's no shooting in Rocket League? Can you
get that for me? He really likes Rocket League. Rocket
League is the best. Okay, Um, it's funny you bring
up being Mad and Madden. Like, I'm old enough to
have played like first gen Madden. Always been a good
Madden player, playing Hoop in college and overseas. I got
I was getting lit up by a ten year old
in Madden. What happened? How did the game get so difficult? Well,

(01:41:28):
you have to like use your right stick to stay upright.
That's too much for me. I need the right sick
needs to be juke and truck and that's all I need. Yeah. Seven. Okay,
So look, I when you had this crazy first half,
I'm watching the game and I text a couple of
my NFL friends and I was like, how dully far,
so false? So far in the draft? You ran like

(01:41:48):
a four or five two? Right? I mean your dad,
Your dad's a coach, an athlete. You're a great athlete.
How did you You got hurt a bunch of college,
didn't you? I missed, Um, I think four or of
games my senior year. Yeah, at a foot injury. So
I didn't really have a lot of tape to put
up on film, which I understand. I get it. Um,
But you know I'm just truck along now and that's

(01:42:09):
all that matters. Yeah. No, it really really amazing stuff.
Was it in the game plan to use you that much?
Or did it just evolve as the game played out? Uh?
I'm a little bit of both. Um. You know, we
have a lot of plays for a lot of different
guys to get opportunities, and I feel like, I mean
they just kind of kept dropping me in space and
espression the zone. Uh So, I mean we just kept

(01:42:29):
calling him and then I'm pretty sure it's like one
I mean one play at a fifty yard or and
then three plays later I was wide open for eighty
five yards. I mean, that's all on coach Shanahan's scheme.
And I wasn't anything special. They just weren't guarding me. Yeah.
I mean you're also kind of running away from dudes.
A guy your size has normally run away from guys,
and you're running away from guys as well. I mean
that you can. I know you want to give Kyle
a lot of credit, but some of it is you

(01:42:50):
have an incredible amount of athletic ability. Hey, well, thank you.
Uh you know, I'll take that. Um, it's got live
show on Fox Sports rid of George Kittles our guest. Okay,
so he came up to you. He's like miked up.
He came up to you and apologize to you for
not getting the record. Did you know that you were
that close to the record. I knew, like, I think
we're in our last drive or a second last drive.

(01:43:10):
Joe Staley said something to me in the huddle about
I was like four yards away, not even know what
he was talking about it first, and then someone said
something to me right before the game end, and I
was like, oh, well that would have been fun, but
you know, we got to win, so it was it
was all okay, yeah, game, game felt over when you're
up twenty nothing eighty five yard You mentioned the eighty
five yard touchdown run. What's that experience like for those
of us who have never done that before? Feeling that

(01:43:32):
like just seeing the green grass and like going around
and then you know, Donta had a great block and I,
you know, saw that, and I mean as soon as
I saw he had the block, I think, I mean, yeah, no,
I knew I was going to take it the whole way.
And it's it's definitely an exhilarated feeling running the end
zone in front of a great home stadium. Yeah. So
when you when you get the block, is it like
in slow motion? Is it you're looking up at the

(01:43:53):
Are you looking up at the jumbo trying to see
if anybody's chasing you? Like? What is actually? Do you
remember what actually goes through your mind? Yeah? Um, I
mean it kind of does. It slows down a little bit. Um.
I know, my the first one where I got tripped up,
I was trying to look up the scoreboard and I
didn't see the guy behind me, So the second time.
I didn't even look at the scoreboard. I just said,
screwed it. I'm gonna run the stass I possibly can,
and that that that worked out a little bit better

(01:44:14):
for me. George Kittle joining us Doug Gotlib Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Kind of a weird year, right when Jimmy
goes down, everybody thought, ah, this season is over. You
mentioned c J. Beth and he comes in. You guys
nearly beat the Chargers, uh in Carson because he was
playing great. Then he gets hurt. You guys go to
somebody get as a Southern miss nobody ever heard of.

(01:44:34):
Then he plays well, Well, what's just like three different
quarterbacks in such a short season. Um No, what's nice
is that we haven't had to change any part of
our offense because like a quarterback doesn't know anything. All
three guys know the offense very well. So it was
really just you know, the hey, the next guy is up,
and we're not going to change anything. So like, I mean,
nothing changed for me. It was just you know, the

(01:44:56):
guy who was throwing me the ball, and uh, you know,
they all have their own touch to it, but you know,
it's it's still football, is just playing catch and I
mean that's just a testament of the quarterbacks were being
ready and prepared. And uh, I mean in fact, we
don't have to change anything makes our lives a lot easier. Yeah.
You can, by the way, vote for George to go

(01:45:17):
just on the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Could you sense any I don't know if it's animus
or extra desire to beat the hell out of the Broncos,
considering it's Kyle and how his dad's tenure and and look,
you know John Lynch, you're ultimately your boss also a
former Bronco it was could you get any sense that
it meant a little bit more to them? Um? Yes,

(01:45:40):
so no, I mean, uh definitely could feel that, you
know that we mean, we want to win every single game. Um,
but you could you know, you can kind of feel it,
you know with Mr Lynch and with Kyle. Uh, But
like I said, you know, it's just it is a
football game, and you know, we just everything we could
win the game, and you know, especially for New York
family and know the tragic loss that they had. Um,
no fact that uh you know, our owner was there

(01:46:01):
for the game with us. It was pretty inspiring as well,
so you know, it was an all around good day
for us. Yeah you mentioned Jed. You are coming in
talking about the loss of his brothers, really really really
emotional to even watch. I can't imagine being in that
locker room. What about winning? You know, there is the
sense from those of us idiots on radio like, hey,
you know the better off actually losing games. Does that

(01:46:21):
ever come up in conversation? No? Um, I mean, I mean,
I don't know if everyone like realizes that the NFL
to a business. Um. And so if you like, when
people say tank, it doesn't really make a lot of
sense because it's your job on the line, and if
you play bad, you get replaced. And so there are
guys that you're fighting for their lives, uh, you know,
for their livelihoods, for their families and stuff. So no one,

(01:46:43):
no one talks about tanking. Everyone's trying to win every
single game, and everyone's trying to play as well as
they can. I tell me about the Seahawks team. You
know they thumped you guys two weeks ago. I mean really.
And this is weird because usually you don't play teams
this quickly. Right, You play them, then you play Denver,
then you play them again. They they've had really ind
of a remarkable season. Everydy thought they'd be in rebuild mode.
They're not there in playoff mode. You got a chance

(01:47:04):
to knock them off their pedestal after another big win.
What do you see when you see the Seahawks defense? Uh,
you know, I see a team that's rolling right now. Um,
I don't know if at four or five in a row,
but you know, they're wheeling and dealing and uh, you
know it's fun because they're coming into our house and uh,
like you said, you know they did they whooped us
up a couple of weeks ago. But what's nice is
you know, we just gotta win. You know, we're feeling

(01:47:25):
good too, So I think would be a great win.
I mean, a great game. And I can't wait to
be out there playing against a great Seattle defense. You know,
it would be really fun for us. You you went
to high school, I know you went to high school
cold places. I think, uh Wisconsin a little bit, in
Iowa a little bit, and I know, and you finished
up in Norman in Oklahoma. But you're that's you're more
kind of Midwest, right Nick Mullins. He feels country to me.

(01:47:46):
He just he feels like there's gotta be some give
me the most country thing. Nick Mollins does. I it's
just funny. He just has sometimes he has a southern draw, uh,
which is pretty fun, especially when he's falling to play.
He usually pretty good about it. Like he's very vanilla
with alre talks in the huddle because you have to
be because every once in a while you hear it
and it definitely gives me a quick chuckle while I'm

(01:48:06):
uh jogging up to the line of scrimmage. Yeah, it's
gotta be a little bit fish out of water up
there in northern California being a country boy. But I'd
love to that that's a reality show. I'd love him
and c Jared two peas in a pod when it
comes to that. It's hilarious. Um, who's better at Matt?
Who's better at Rocket League? Uh? He or c j
j is so bad at Rocket League? That's why you
have That's why he threw the controller? Is that what happened?

(01:48:28):
Probably is a big Fortnite guy actually he's pretty good
at that. Yeah yeah, um alright, um well listen, good
best of luck on the Pro Bowl, best of luck
this weekend, and uh, hopefully you continue to dominate. C. J.
Beathard and maybe he can replace I mean, he can
afford it, he can replace your controller. You know what.
I think he should he owes me at Christmas present.

(01:48:48):
I agree, Thanks so much for joining us. Ay, thank
you George Kittle for hashtag Pro Bowl vote. You can
vote for him at g kittlet gets you to Dan Buyer, Dan,
do you know any of these video games we're talking abo?
I know Fortnite because my niece plays it, and I
mean obviously I know Madden. But Rocket League, Um, I

(01:49:09):
don't know. I'm not familiar with that, although I wouldn't mind, uh,
you know, getting the NHL game for Christmas. The NHL
nineteen hockey games are always fun. Hockey games are great,
NHL with NHL ninety what was the original one? And
then I used to play Blades of Steel, Blades of Steel? Absolutely,

(01:49:30):
that's I stick to the sports games. So a nice
hockey soccer game. I love the baseball game, the MLB
the show years back. I haven't bought it for years,
but but those were always fun too. That sounds like
everything baseball I used to really love and I I
used to really be into to to to uh the
Hot Stove League even yeah, really hard because nothing, nothing's happened.

(01:49:53):
The hot stove is broken, I believe this year because
there is not much there. By the way, George Kittle
in ing up about him, He's cousins with Jeff Settles. Yeah, yeah,
I didn't it. Who also played at Wisconsin? Right? Um? No, no, no, no, no,
that was sam Oki Sam Transfers. Yeah. I I had

(01:50:16):
to carry sam Oaki home from a bar when we
were eighteen years old in high school after the Cocola
American game in Annapolis. Might claim to fame. Oh, Sam
is a good guy. I gotta get sam Oki on
my podcast. By the way, just this is sorry, Humble Bragg,
me and Eric Musselman is like, how long do we
end up going? Over an hour? Yeah? About an hour

(01:50:36):
on my podcast, All Ball Podcast. I've tweeted it out.
I'll do so again. Sounds good. Looking forward to it,
just like I'm looking forward to tonight's game between the
Chargers and Chief Sound Fox coverage at seven thirty Eastern
tom a lot at stake for both teams. Obviously, Chiefs
are eleven and two and could clinch the division, and
a first run by with the wind Chargers at ten
and three could clinch a playoff birth with a victory,

(01:50:57):
and ye know, there still would be something to say
about that FC West. As for Melvin Gordon, remains a
game time decision because of his knee injury. Carson Wentz
has a back issue of fractured vertebra in his back.
If you will, may not need surgery according to reports,
but you're gonna have Nick Foles play Sunday night against
the rams Is. According to the NFL Network, Stealers running

(01:51:17):
back James Connor didn't practice with his high ankle sprain.
They've got the Patriots coming up like Cowboys. Running back
Zekiel Elliott did practice despite a shoulder injury, while guard
Zack Martin held out with a knee injury. A couple
of NBA notes, Mavericks forward drk Nevitski expected to make
his season debut tonight against the Sun's Nick Suon. Rookie
Alonso Trier to a two year deal with the Nets
signed Spencer Dinwoodie to a three year extension. Spencer Man

(01:51:41):
tours a c L at at Colorado against Washington has
been in an oude. The league had a great man,
He's awesome. What a great story he had thirty nine
last night, I believe against the Sixers. So yeah, not
too bad. And the Indians treated Edwin and Carnascio to
the Mariners for Carlos Santana, who spent most of his
career in Cleveland. There are reports and uh In Carnacion

(01:52:02):
could be on his way to Tampa as part of
a trade as well. Doug all yours Tampa trading four players.
How about that four established players is in fact weird.
Look I said this on Twitter yesterday and people are
continue to react to it. In regards to Will Greer. So,
Will Greer's quarterback at West Virginia, he announced he's not

(01:52:23):
gonna play in their bowl game, and you know, this
is the way it works in social media, is like, oh,
good for him, He's gonna protect himself for the next level.
And look fully aware. Clayton Thorson, who's Northwestern's quarterback, tours
a c L last year. Now he did so catching
a pass on a trick play, which you know, look,

(01:52:44):
you can get hurt anywhere. Trick play probably not the
best idea, and he wasn't healthy early in the season.
But Northwestern did bounce back and one their side of
the Big ten doors and a big reason why. And
of course people said Cote McCoy Colt McCoy got hurt
in the BCS National championship game, but he basically got
like a stinger. Remember you had like dead arm and

(01:53:06):
Alabama was able to win a national championship. Uh, there
have been a handful of other quarterbacks who have have
gotten hurt. Um Kelly Chris got hurt a couple of
years ago with Stanford. But but I think there's a
couple of things that people miss on. You know, there's
this idea, Wow stalls bank millions of dollars and what

(01:53:29):
does the kid get for a meaningless game. Let's just
explaining something. If a game is only meaningful, if a
championship is decided by the game, then Will Greer shouldn't
have played against Oklahoma because they didn't have a chance
to win a championship. They were keeping they could have

(01:53:50):
kept Oklahoma from competing for a championship, but for them personally,
like that's just creating some sort of some sort of
value in it. And by the way, what are bowl games. One,
they're basically a last final exam that you got to
show up. You should show up and do. Secondly, it's

(01:54:13):
nothing but a promotion. All they do is promote the
quarterback and it's usually a lot of fun. You get
back and you throw it fifty or sixty times and
put up crazy numbers and it helps promote you and
put you on display for those same coaches. Look, half
the injuries to football players are non contact anyway. So

(01:54:35):
if you're really working out working on your skill, you
can get hurt and tar on a cl or a
crew or whatever or an achilles tendon when you're working
out with your trainer. The difference is all of those
practices leading up in the game are viewed by scouts.
It's more it's more great plays to put on tape,

(01:54:57):
more great plays put on tape. And so I I look,
I think it's opportunity lost. There's there's something too competing
one more time with your guys. I don't know if
you guys saw this, but you know there's another Another
defensive tackle at Ohio State, Draymond Jones wanted well I

(01:55:23):
wanted the moment to be more dramatic. But yes, I'm
officially declaring for the NFL Draft. Thank you to Buckeye
Nation everything you've done for me and my family. Love
you guys. Ps. I'm playing in the Rose Bowl. I
had to finish what my brothers and I started. Correct,
that's what you started. Well, you know I'm getting an
A in the class. I don't have to take the finals.
You do take the final. Well, I got a job

(01:55:43):
waiting for me as soon as I graduate. Okay, take
the final. Tyler Murray headed to the NFL. I told
you it should happen. Could it happen? I'll give you
details next. Be sure to catch live editions of the
Doug Dot Leap Show week days in noon eastern three
p m. Pass Eific Chargers chiefs face off tonight in
both teams on the road to the playoffs. Speaking of

(01:56:06):
being on the road, everyone knows about the risk of
drunk driving. People get hurt, you get arrested, incur huge
legal expenses, or even lose your job. If you think
drive drunk driving is nobody deal, you couldn't be more wrong.
Drive sober or get pulled over can play a little
bit more. Julio Glaciers for me, Feliciana. Who did I say, Julier?

(01:56:31):
They're not the same person. They are not the same person.
Out That was a pretty uh pretty. That wasn't like
saying Derrick Johnson's gonna play for the Chiefs, was it.
I'm supposed to know. I'm supposed to know. I think
second grade, maybe third grade, third grade. I was in
the first bilingual class in southern California. Is taught about

(01:56:53):
English and Spanish. And for Christmas, we all saying that
in English and in Spanish police Navidad for our for
our parents. Um. And with that, I'm very good at
my My Spanglish is really good. When I go south
at the border. It just is. I'll say this about
the stephen A thing. The whole I'm doing a bunch

(01:57:13):
of stuff, so I messed up. Is the biggest crocer
you know what I've ever heard. It just is. It
just is. All you have to say is, hey, I
didn't prep. I don't watch the Chargers. I don't watch
the Chargers. I totally forgot that Hunter Henry got hurt.

(01:57:34):
And you know what, no one ever talks about the
Chief's defense and the only guy on defense I could name,
and it should be it should be justin Houston. Maybe
Eric Barry. Who's back playing tonight is Derek. I always
like watching Derek Johnson. I forgot I blew it, but
the whole I'm doing a million things. I meant Virgil Green. Yeah,
it's not not actually helping you there, press, let's get

(01:57:58):
to the press. Here's Dan By alright, Doug Tonight Chargers
and Chiefs coverage coming up at seven thirty Eastern time
on Fox. Just to put what's at stake. Chiefs could
clinch the a f C West with the first round
by and a first round by with the wind. Chargers
can clinch a playoff birth with a victory, and the
winner is in the driver's seat for home field Avantage. THR. Yeah,

(01:58:23):
that I didn't know if there was another one. By
the way of you and John Ramos, who do you
think speaks better Spanish? Oh? Ras No, No, John doesn't
know anything. John plays coy. He plays excuse me. John's
the kind of guy who goes as I don't really
know Spanish. Steelers the Steelers. Steeler's offensive coordinator Randy Fickner

(01:58:49):
said today that running back James Connor wouldn't have to
practice to play Sunday afternoon against the Patriot Talk. Yeah,
Connor missed it today with a spring we're talking about practice.
They tried to do that last night on the Warriors
Raptors broadcast on ESPN. They did the Iverson thing when
talking about the Bulls. Yeah, I think it's a little

(01:59:10):
different there. Well, the way Larry Brown actually secretly hated
coaching a Iverson. He just it's not publicly popular to
say that, but he despised it. Uh. It wasn't just
that he wouldn't practice hard. He'd show up half hungover
late de rag on, walk through things, screw things up.
But yeah, you can tell me that the Bulls don't
need to practice. I can show you where they got

(01:59:32):
beat by sixty points. Larry Brown ten years, always end well,
always pretty well. And at s m U he just
kind of walked away. But weren't they hit with probation?
Little things? Yeah, little things? I mean U c l
a hit with probation. Kansas hid probation. I mean the
we're the rare, the rare trifecta. One other injury note.
It's a big week in fantasy football for many who

(01:59:54):
are in the playoffs. Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin not
likely to go against the Niners and George Kittle, who
he just add on. Baldwin still dealing with a hip
and groin injury. Seahawks can clinch a playoff berth with
a win on Sunday. Yeah if you're he said, I mean,
George Kiddo was like, look, dude, we're not tanking. We
just suck organically. I guess no. I'm getting there on
the third string quarterback with Mullins there. It's fascinating to

(02:00:15):
see how Seattle has turned this thing around. I do
think good things are on the way for the San
Francisco for the Niners. Side dot Com reports Oklahoma submitted
a request for a draft evaluation to the College Advisory
Committee for Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and possibly future a
second baseman, Kyler Murray. Maybe just doing their due Dillo,

(02:00:35):
do do you due diligence? But I've told people, I
I went back through the math and told you that
he's gonna get You know, some are five million dollars
or whatever if he goes through with the baseball, but
he's not in the major leagues. They has to go
the minor leagues, make it up to the major leagues,
and then you gotta play four years before you get
real money. Whereas if you get draft in the first
round the Nation Football League, your first four years are
guaranteed dollars, and they're more dollars than you'll make with

(02:01:00):
at first contract with the A's. Raptors got a win
last night against the Warriors, but they last center Jonas Valentiunas.
He's gonna miss four weeks following surgery to repair a
dislocated left thumb. Yeah. His his thumb looked pretty nasty there.
He held that. He was screaming, writhing in pain. I
dislocated my thumb on a similar play. Yeah you did. Yeah, yeah,

(02:01:20):
when when you have the ball and somebody like takes
a swipe at it, I think I actually thought he
hit it. Hit him for his own face. He watched
the play. I thought he hit himself with it, which
actually and he's a huge man. I think he dislocated
his own thumb that way. I had to. I had
to have surgery as well. Nick signed Yeah, sorry, Dan Patrick,
it was a long time ago. Uh. The Nick signed

(02:01:41):
Alonzo Truer to a two year contract. As the rookies
two way deal was expiring soon. You have forty five
days on an NBA roster in those two way deals.
He was already almost to the max because he's been
on the team from the start. The value of the
deal we're seven million dollars, Pro basketball talk dot Com
saying the deal is worth more than twenty of the
thirty first round contracts from the draft. Could be, it

(02:02:03):
could be, it's not. I don't believe it's fully guaranteed.
It's um, but you know, look, it's gonna be interesting.
The true thing, m I canna tell you, nobody thought
that he was going to be a long time. Probably
thought he'd be a guy who put up huge numbers
in the G League and then get called up. Uh,
it's taken advantage of opportunities. Meanwhile, they had to cut
Ron Baker in the process, and finally, Memphis men's basketball
coach Penny Hardaway said that Rockets point guard Chris Paul

(02:02:27):
reached out to him for tickets to the Memphis Tennessee
game that will take place on Saturday morning. The Rockets
are in town facing the Grizzlies that night. That's news. Well,
I just think it's interesting that you know, Chris Paul
would like to go to the Memphis Tennessee game like ball,
you don't like to go to ball, or that maybe
Chris Paul needs to take it. You need to take it,
don't you just show up? And maybe Memphis is, you know,

(02:02:49):
getting back on the map. We know they're gonna be great.
Tennessee is the top five team and kind of it. Well,
it'll be it'll be hyped. Um yeah, no, look, it's
gonna be fast. And Chris Paul cps CP three program.
I'm guessing there's a couple of kids from his program
playing in that game. Bag it out there and pressed.
That was the press. H oh boy. Well listen, if

(02:03:10):
Raumos doesn't show up, it's because we have some sort
of holiday party and we remember how last year ended.
Hopefully people have deleted those photos of Raumos. I got
the Chargers straight up tonight, you guys, Chargers chiefs, cheez
all right, we're split. Crew will be back Tomorrow's discuss
in the Dug Outlive Show.
