Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom, What Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the sunny,
beautiful city of Angels. M M. You know what's amazing.
We have some great topics today. We'll talk some NBA
(00:21):
with Chris Mannis. He'll join us, a new co host,
new new host on Fox Sports Radio, of course, writes
for Yahoo Sports. Um, we'll we'll get the thoughts of
Bobby Hurley, was one a couple of national championships and
played in three final fours Arizona State head coach. He'll
join us. We'll talk some college basketball TALX, some NBA talk,
(00:43):
some NFL football. We're listening week away from first pitch
of Major League Baseball season, right, and uh, is it me?
Or is there not a lot of hype in this season?
Like have you have you stopped and gone like up?
And like this is a year to which the Yankees
have a two thousand and eighteen version of Murderers Row.
(01:07):
This is a year in which the Dodgers are trying
to get back to and now win a World Series.
The Houston Astros, who won the World Series appeared to
be better than they were last year, like legitimately better
than they were last year. Their weakness was the bullpen,
and they loaded up on bullpen. And yet like I
could try, but what's the what's the point? There is
(01:30):
no buzz about it right now. Kind of weird. Right,
all right, good, let's um, let's get to the topic
at hand. We got a final four set we are
headed to. The Final four will be taken off Wednesday,
broadcasting from San Antonio live on Thursday and Friday. The
games are Saturday. And what's amazing about it is I
would agree with the sentiment that college basketball's n c
(01:55):
A tournament which starts with and culminates with one champion
in a keep winning, keep playing, ultimately democratic style. The
perfect example is Loyola of Chicago, who likely would not
have gotten in as an at large. Again, I don't
think that's the right way to select whether or not
(02:17):
teams should get in is at large. But if you're
in eleven seed after winning your league and winning your
league tournament, that tells the rest of the world. Had
you lost just one game in the conference tournament, there's
a chance you wouldn't have been in the n c
A tournament. But loyal Chicago will have a chance to
win two games and win a national championship. That's all
(02:37):
I gotta do. Win two games against Michigan. And this
isn't your your dad's Michigan's team, or even my Michigan team.
This is a Michigan team, nice players, but doesn't overwhelm
you with talent. All I gotta do is be Michigan.
Then beat Kansas, arguably the least talented in terms of
(02:58):
NBA talent on the roster Kansas team we've seen since
Bill self has been their head coach. Win two games.
They went an ash tip hip. In spite of the
fact that this is a completely random, random tournament. I mean,
think of it. Think of how how close we came
to Michigan not being there. Houston has the basketball, gets
(03:20):
fouled up two and mrs. They missed three free throws.
Devin Davis missed one. They come down Michigan missus. He
dives in the floor, calls time out. They throw it
back in. He gets fouled. He had three free throws.
He makes any one of those three free throws, it
goes to overtime. On a three, he makes two of
(03:40):
those three free throws. Houston wins Michigan not playing this
past weekend, Loyola of Chicago wins their first three games
by a combined total of four points. I mean, hell Villanova,
and there was no fluky end of game wins for Villanova. Uh,
(04:00):
but think of the foul trouble that Javon Carter and
Connate were in for West Virginia. Or go to yesterday
and Jalen Brunson pushes off with with one foul in
the first half, gets called for a second foul, and
the entire game changes. Entire game changes, and like, look,
Villanova could not have shot the ball worse yesterday, and
(04:23):
Texas Tech was still hanging around, hanging around. They missed
lay up after lay up after layups. Some of that
is nova, some of that is nerves. Some of those
the angles to which in the lack of spacing. The
fact is Texas Tech throws in a couple of those lambs,
Jalen Brunson gets called for a second foul, and we
have ourselves a completely different ball game. And then, of course,
(04:44):
you know you sit there and you watch Kansas play
for national championship. Duke very easily could have won that
game up three with the basketball and Wendell Carter shoots
an airball and a turnaround speed my high look gets
free for a wide open three knocks it down. And
then there one senior Grace and Allen goes one on
(05:06):
one and tries to bank in a shot from about
eight or nine feet. It rims in and out off
the backboard. Any of that changes, and we have a
different set of teams. I mean Loyla Chicago playing University
of Tennessee that their last shot hits the front rim,
(05:26):
bounces up and bounces in. That happens one in every
fifty shots, even with the synthetic basketballs they play with
in college basketball. So in spite of the fact that
the outcomes are random and that it's a weird way
to select who your best team is, right because really
(05:47):
your best team NBA feels like the best way to
determine who the best team actually is. Is it at
least interesting to anybody else that with all a randomness
of down to one that the fact that the brackets
do become imbalanced, right, one bracket had Villanova, Kansas, and
(06:10):
Duke As as the final four teams in that bracket.
The other one had what Loyola Nevada. What were the
other two teams in that I don't even remember now, right,
Loyola Nevada, Geez, Florida's no, and it was in Florida State.
What were there two teams who who the Loyala just
beat to go to the final four? Yeah, Kansas State
(06:34):
and Kansa State and Kentucky. Kentucky was a five seat,
like completely imbalanced brackets, And yet what do we have
We started the tournament, and I told you, generally there's
three teams that are blue bloods or that you thought
would be there, and one team that you're like, how
the hell do they get here? That's how almost everyone
(06:54):
I've ever been to, and I've been to like twenty
two of them, has ever been where you're like, oh,
I know that team, I know that team, I know
that team. I've never heard of that team. Pick a year,
pick a final four. We had the one year with
the four ones. That's the outlier we had last year
(07:15):
where you had a bunch of surprises, but generally, right
you got u c. L A made it three years
in a row. They played Florida two years a row,
Like those are two of the four best teams. When
year you had George Mason there. One year, you have
VCU there. This is kind of so with all the
randomness of the tournament. Villanova was the best team in
(07:39):
the Big East. They won the biggest tournament. The only
reason they didn't win the Big East was they weren't healthy.
Kansas won the Big Twelve, won the Big Twelve tournament,
and Michigan got hot at the end of the year
was probably the hottest and best team in the Big
Ten at the end of the season won the Big
Ten Tournament. Oh yeah, by the way, as much as
the Little Chicago is a surprise, they have one third
(08:00):
of games that did win their league that did win
their conference tournament. So is there some confirmation biased too?
I told you this might happen, and it did happen,
of course. But the idea that you get a bracket
and you're like, man, there's gonna be chaos. Anybody can
beat anybody, it's not really true. We had three blue
(08:21):
bloods or quasi blue bloods, high major programs with elite
talent and elite coaching, and then we got one team
that nobody expected to be here. And the only difference
is you picked the wrong team to be unexpected to
be there, and you probably picked the wrong blue bud
to be there, right like I had Kansas, I had
Arizona who lost in the first game, and I had Duke,
(08:43):
and I had Perdue. When we saw how that all
worked out and True Perdue lost their center. Who could
have seen that coming? Arizona gets curb stomped by Buffalo.
Buffalo shoots fifteen of thirty from three who could have
seen that coming. So it's one of the the the
(09:04):
unexpected becomes the expected. But one thing you can expect
is there is some expected in the unexpected. Does that
make any sense? Sort of? When you're dealing with lives
ups and downs, it helps to know the ins and
outs of insurance. Let Farmers share with you practical knowledge
gained from more than ninety years of experience. We know
(09:25):
a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
Fine an agent at Farmers dot Com. Something fascinating about
the NBA as opposed to college basketball. I would I
would agree with the conclusion that the NBA gives you
more of a true champion, that the best teams proved
to be the best teams because you've got seven game
(09:46):
series in order to do so on the other hand,
that injuries give us a champion more so than the
best team has become a champion. And oh yeah, by
the way, that it's such a long and arduous two
month journey to becoming a campion in the NBA playoffs,
that oftentimes there's injuries during the playoffs that you have
far less often in the n c A tournament. At
(10:08):
the n c A tournament, a game can change on
foul trouble. Look at the cow The games changed on
foul trouble this week, whereas NBA championships change on health.
Is that what happened over the weekend Steph Curry hurt
his knee? Are we going to have a different NBA
champion in June because of something that happened on n

you hiring? Every business, as you know, needs great people,

Mannox is an NBA insider for Yahoo Sports. Make sure
check out his show so days from noon to three
alongside NBA champion Karen Butler. Right here on Fox Sports Radio,
he joins in the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Manix,
what are you hearing about how bad Steph Curry's knee
injury was? Well, I think by ruling him out, Um,
(12:21):
there's a lot of pressure taken off now. Now Steph
clearly thinks that that he can be back either before
the end of the first round, even before the start
of the first round. But everything I hear in from
from people kind of around that situation is that they
want to be extra cautious here and they want to
make sure that whenever he comes back, there's no chance
of maybe what he dealt with a couple of years
(12:42):
ago at the ankle, where he's kind of dragging that
ankle around for much of the playoffs. So I think
they're they're trying to take the pressure off by ruling
him out. But you know, it's based on what steps
saying publicly, you have to think he's he's targeting something
before that. Okay, so what about the rest of their roster?
I mean, you know, if you just look at final
scores like, wow, they lost to the Utah Jazz, and
then you look at the actual personnel on on the
(13:05):
Golden State where then none of their guys played even
you know, they're not starting Iguodalas they're still obviously trying
to rest him. What's the what's the most likely time
in which we'll see the rest of the roster on
the floor. I think over the next you know, week
to ten days. Um, you know, Steve Kurr, I just
saw USA today that Kevin Durant should be back on
Thursday play Thompson. While you know, dealing with an injury
(13:28):
to to a thumb is significant, Um, it's not viewed
as as something that you to hinder him in the playoffs.
I think the rest of the team will be back
well before the start of the postseason. But you know,
obviously they're not anywhere near what they could be with
without Steff. I guess the question is, Doug, is you
know how much firepower do they need to get past
(13:49):
a Minnesota or Utah in the first round. Now that
maybe two different answers, um, but I think they believe
internally that if their full strength without Steph, they can
win that first round series and then deal without with
whatever comes next with Steph Curry, Chris Mannock, John Us, Yeah,
Who Sports and Fox Sports trader Doug Outlip Show. Okay,
(14:09):
I heard. When I heard what Tony Parker said, I
was I was blown away, right Like, Look, it's one
thing to say I've had that injury, and you know,
just from my own perspective, I was able to come
back from it. I'm good now. When he said I
had that injury, mine was a hundred times worse, and
(14:29):
then go into an infomercial about how great the doctors
and medical staff in San Antonio is. I'm like, all right,
something ain't right here. What what's the reaction to what
Tony Parker did Friday? Now? A lot like what yours
is right now? Um, you know the Spurs, they don't,
especially GotY Parker's been around forever. They speak pretty deliberately.
(14:52):
I mean Tony was asked, you know, five different ways
about what that meeting was about, and he deflected or
outright you know, refused to answer questions about it when
it came to the Spurs medical staff and and his
own injury. I mean the fact that he said a
hundred times worse. Seemed purposeful to me, seemed to be said, um,
(15:13):
you know, not accidentally in that way. So I look,
I get the sense that that that within San Antonio,
there's a belief that despite how how kind of weird
and wild this season has been, they get Kawhi Leonard back,
they can contend for something. And we look at some
of the older guys on the roster, you know, man
Wogin nobly probably his last season, maybe not, but probably
(15:35):
Tony Parker's his minutes go down every single year, and
you know he could be done at the end of
any given year. You know, there's a clock ticking on
this Spurs team and some of the vets there they
kind of know it, and they know what Kauai would
mean to this team coming back. So I think there's
you know, they're not gonna, you know, beat up on
Kauai for for sitting out as long as he has,
but I think they they want answers when it comes
(15:57):
to y hasn't come back. Yeah, that's that's what I
earned when when I heard when I saw his Manu
saying he ain't coming back, and then I heard kind
of kind of this deal from Tony Parker Um. Do
I think pop has something to do with it. I do,
But I also think it has to do with they
still they think they can win a championship, right LaMarcus
Aldrich is back after a disappointing year last year. Golden
(16:17):
State's not healthy. They are not buying into Houston style
because they beat Houston last year. They believe their style
works better in the playoffs and Houston's does. Some of
it has to be out of frustration. I just does
anybody know how Kauai is taking it? Well? I mean,
Kauai is the toughest nut to crack out there. I
mean he's got a pretty tight inner circle, and he himself,
uh doesn't say much. Um but from everything I've heard
(16:40):
leading up to this point, it's just every time he
steps out there and and works out and it just
doesn't feel right. And and look at you know, coming
back when he did and having to go back out
that was really frustrating for him. And and I think
on some level is probably a little scary for him.
You know, a guy it's never dealt with with an
injury like that before. So I think there's there's some
nerves apprehension here. And I just don't you know from
(17:02):
everything I understand, you know, he hears what his teammates
are saying, but he's still not going to come back
until he feels right. Chris mannicks shoining us on the
Doug Gotlip Show here on on Fox Sports Radio. I
watched the Thunder last night, and some of this is
confirmation bias, but some of this is just my eyes
telling me that, uh, Carmelo Anthony is washed, you know,
(17:25):
like he's not a jump shooter just because that fits
with Russell Westbrook. He's a jump shooter because he doesn't
have the legs to go buy anybody, and they're just
trying to hide the fact he can't garden anybody. Uh,
they've accomplished about what we thought they would accomplish right there,
right there, four seed area. Uh Am I am I wrong?
Am I misreading? How good the Thunder can be in
(17:45):
the playoffs? Well? I think they're They're probably more capable
than any of the teams three through eights to to
be able to put together some type of stunning run
just because of the talent on that rock. I agree
with you then that that car Mellow is there's something
wrong there. And and and I kind of It's tough for
Carmelo because this year, more than than any other year
(18:06):
in his career, he's been adaptable, whether it's playing power
forward or becoming more of a jump shooter like he
He's adjusted his game in ways I never saw him
do in New York and New York he was implacable
when it came to uh to changing his game, and
he did at least a couple of times over the
first three or four months of the season. But you know,
I watched him play in Boston the other night. Yeah,
(18:26):
the two free throws. I'm the only thing that went wrong,
But that was that was a crazy sight to see
him his two free throws. And you're right about the
jump shooting. It just doesn't look like he's got the
legs anymore. All that being said, when you get to
the postseason, and you know this, you get to the postseason,
you play like Monday and Thursday, or like Thursday and Sunday.
So if there's ever an opportunity for a guy like
Carmelo to get his legs right for you know, four
(18:48):
or five games, six games in a series, it's the postseason.
So I'm not quite ready to give up on the thunder.
Given that talent level and giving up spread out the
playoffs are It's great. It's a great point in terms
of the spacing in the playoffs. And that's one reason,
you know, Dwyane Wade has been able to go to
the well occasionally in the playoffs or Shaquille O'Neil late
when they when he won his championship with Miami, he
had that one game. The spacing of it does allow
(19:10):
you to kind of recalibrate, if you will. Um yesterday,
I know it was the Brooklyn Nets, but it was
another virtuo. So is this a statement being made by
Lebron And if it's a statement, who is it who
is designed to hear it in terms of his play
in the month of March. I mean maybe teams next
year that are that are looking at him. I mean, look,
(19:31):
he's these are conference playoffs are going to be interesting.
Because I'm a believer at this point in Toronto. A
lot of people I know are not. I'm not a
believer in Boston anymore. But I mean, who the hell knows.
If the Celtics wind up the two seed and Cleveland
winds up four, they could get a free ride to
the not a free ride, but like an easier walk
to the conference finals and maybe have everybody backed by
(19:53):
by that time. But you know, Lapron to me is
having a magnificent offensive year, but the Caps defensive woes
are mirrored by his own. I mean, I saw them
play a couple of times recently, most recently Importland, and
you know, his his defensive team is just about as
bad as has been at any point in time during
his career. And you know that there's a perception out
(20:13):
there amongst whether it's ex players and I talked to
Karen Butler about this or uh, you know, other you know,
scouts and coaches, that he'll just dial it up to
a tend in the postseason because he can. I'm just
not sold on that yet. They're the twenty ninth ranked
defensive team in the league, and to bend that way
the entire season. We're all expected to believe that because
the player the calendar turns to mid April, that Lebron
(20:34):
and the Calves are gonna play at the highest of levels.
I just don't buy it. I think they kind of
are what they are right now, and maybe they get
through a first round pretty easily, but once that second
round comes along. I think they're right for a taking,
I tend to agree. I agree with you. It's also
he does he gets a pass defensively because and Jordan
would get some of this as well, because of some
of the spectacular plays he makes. Whereas if like you
(20:58):
and me, you know, you and I, we watch the
actual game, there are plenty of times to which he's
taking a break on defense and uh and and look
that gets that gets exposed. In the regular season, he's
taking a break and he's they're not good enough for
him to take plays off defensively, and and then the bray.
I mean, look you said, taking a break and they're
playing five on four. Sometimes he's just not he's just
(21:20):
not making any effort. I saw, like take the Portland
game for an example. You know, I saw him and
make two of the worst defensive plays I've ever seen.
There was one inside path the use of Nurkis. He
was five feet away. Nurkis fumbled the ball and Lebron
just kind of looked at him and waved his teammates
toward him, like somebody else go down there and get
him into the first quarter. A basic driving kick from
the column to a menu Lebron was defending a mean
(21:42):
and he made no effort to go out there and
chase him beyond the three point line. Amino made the
open three. I mean, these are are just basic effort
plays and looks like you said, I understand it because
he has to carry and shoulders such an offensive burden.
But but we're expecting and again we talked about the spacing,
and that's fine. But in the playoffs, he's gonna play
forty minutes of high level defense combined with forty eight
(22:03):
minutes or whatever it is of high level offense. I
don't know. That just strange credulity for me to actually believe.
Tend to agree with you. Alright, So what about Kyrie Irving?
He had his knee scoped? Uh, what's his most likely
return date? Well, I mean, from what I gather and
and I was talking to somebody about this last night,
like it, you know, you know, three weeks is when
(22:25):
he gets basketball related activities. I don't know. I mean,
I have a hard time seeing him, you know, even
in the middle of the first round. Maybe I think
that might be optimistic. I mean, I guess you don't
know anything until a guy starts to really heal, but
I would guess the middle of the first round might
be the earliest time for him to come back. And
when he does, how long could it take him to
kind of get his legs excuse me, under him to
(22:46):
some degree. But my question about this, Doug is, and
I brought this up to a couple of people, you know,
familiar with this situation, and I understand the thinking of,
you know, you have surgery when it's so overwhelming that
you can't deal with the pain anymore. And that's where
Kyrie came from. He was dealing with too much pain
that he couldn't go through anymore. But my question is,
when you trade for him, you kind of knew, I mean,
(23:09):
what how much you knew, but you kind of knew
that he was gonna need some kind of procedure right
to to deal with whatever was was in that knee,
the wire as it turns out, whatever it is. You
know he was dealing with irritation back in February. Why
not have this procedure back in February If you have
a sense or any kind of feeling that maybe you
needed to have this procedure done, why wait until it
(23:29):
becomes so overwhelming in late March and and have to
potentially lose Kyrie Irving for the only playoff series you've got.
I mean, Boston could lose in the first round without
Kyrie Irving. I I loved Tara Rogier and Brad Stevens.
I thought, is like the m v P of this
recent road trip that they're on because of how he's coached.
But without Kyrie Irving in the playoffs, you could go
down in the first round. I just I kind of wonder,
(23:49):
why wasn't this procedure done earlier so you wouldn't have
to deal with this in the postseason. It's a it's
a great, great question. It really is a great question.
I wish I had an answer for you. I mean,
I guess what he does. Look at and look, Doug.
I've talked to the people around the situation, and you
know the consistent message I'm getting it's like, look, we don't.
It wasn't to the point where we thought he'd meet
(24:11):
surgery right now, and and and he clearly does at
this point. But man, your whole season could go down
the drain because you wait a little bit too long.
I just think it's a fair question. Now, it's a
very fair question asked Chris Mannix. Check him out on

at the Ghirston Pavilion, which is where Loyal Merriymount plays
in the semifinals. Do you know who they do? You
(27:26):
remember who they're playing, Ramos Pepperdine, Portland's you know the
port Guard and the other team was in Portland, Erik Spoelstra. Yeah,
old w c C Hoops and Ghirston Pavilion the Lions.
Then if you will, how's the Hank built? But you
know watching him there lay motionless, that was um there's
(27:50):
only fifty seconds remaining in the game. Too close game.
And you know they have those um defibrillators now in
every gym. I actually saw it save somebody's life. I
don't I would assume they used it. I have no idea,
and you know, just sometimes your heart gives out. But gosh,
that is awful, awful news for a kid playing professional
(28:13):
basketball in the gle Um. Let's let let's turn to
the NFL for a second. Trying to kind of recalibrate here,
it's hard for me. I just I have visions of that.
I had a friend when I was twelve, I think
he was thirteen, Don Clark, who died suddenly at a
practice of Villa Park High School. Just collapsed, couldn't be resuscitated.
(28:36):
It was awful. I just I remember thinking I was
gonna die at the end of any basketball game. I
just awful feeling. Um, let's try and recalibrate here. Let
me um, Jordy Nelson is now a an Oakland Raider.
That that feels weird. Now it makes some sort of
sense because Reggie mackenzie came from Green Bay Packers, right.
(28:58):
And of course, uh, some of this is in what
Jon Gruden I think wants a guy who can build
a relationship with Derek Carr, who, by by many accounts
in Oakland did not have a great relationship with some
of his skill position players. The question goes like, well,
why didn't it work? Why couldn't they make it work
in green Bay? Yet a nine and a half million
(29:20):
dollar cap hit. So the guess is, well, it had
to do with money, right. You know, he didn't want
to take a pay cut and they didn't want to
pay him his old contract, and so he had to
be gone because he was no longer their top wide receiver.
Here's Jordy Nelson on ESPN Radio in Wisconsin. I think
the hurt part was the unwillingness to try to make
it work. Then again, like you said, it's a business
(29:42):
and they have to do what they think is that
what they need to do to be able to move
forward and prepare for you know, the future of the factors.
So that's why it is m hm fascinating right that
you're like, wait, they I kind of think it's now. Look,
there's a couple of different layers to it. First thing
is the Packers overall talent hasn't been good enough. We
(30:07):
can all agree that's why Ted Thompson got kicked upstairs
and there's a new general manager. The sense around the
league is that they had gotten stale. They had tried
to build from within and you better be really really
good at evaluating and really really lucky. And they've had
some injuries and so you know, nobody wins with their
own depth. There's a reason, guys for backups. So you
(30:30):
bring a new GM, or you you move somebody up
to be a g M. He's got new ideas. Those
ideas do not coincide with the old ideas. So if
you like the old way, why did you hire a
new guy? But is it at least can we at
least think it's possible that what the Packers are guilty
(30:52):
of here is better to be a year too early
than a year too late. Right. Martellis Bennett. Remember that
big signing the Green Bay Packers had last offseason? How
did that work out? It's awful. He was not good enough.
And that's because the Patriots they try and hit it
right in terms of timing. If nothing else there, you're
(31:14):
you're early as supposed to, you're too late. Oftentimes they
have they get rid of the jettison a guy. A
guy signs the free agent and he has a good
year and then he completely falls off a cliff where
he just outright retires. Because the thought is that when
you if you you're too late and you have a
guy on your active roster and you count on him,
(31:35):
now you're way more screwed than if you got rid
of a guy a little bit too early and he's
a little bit more productive than you thought. Then you
factor in. Jordy Nelson's wildly popular. He's not just wildly
popular with the fans. He's really popular with Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers loves Jordy Nelson loves and he should. He's
(31:56):
been a great Green Bay Packer to play with. But
when you like a guy personally and you respect the
guy professionally, sometimes you'll look his way too often. And
once he's gotten past that peak and he's on the
downside of his career and he you get a little
too late, you start forcing a ball to a guy
who's no longer open. You start depending on the old Jordan.
(32:18):
I kind of understand this. Was it about money, yes,
and no, is it about Jordy actually maybe being too
good of a guy, being too well liked. You're like,
how could that be a problem? Because when things go bad,
really really really good guys, and Jordy Nelson, by all accounts,
(32:40):
are really really really good, salt of the earth guy,
people are not willing to accept that his talent ain't
that good anymore. And that's what's happened. He's in his
early thirties thirty three, that's basically mid thirties as an
NFL player. He had an a c L injury. He's
no longer their top wide receiver, their second best wide receiver.
And so was money a good excuse? Sure? But it
(33:03):
was also we're better off being a year or two
earlier than a year too late. It's person, It's strictly business,
that's right. You gotta get to Hooters and try the
new smoke wings A whole new way to crave wings
with all the taste and half the calories twice as
many at Hooters. The Steelers are looking to draft running
back in the first round. Big deal, a little deal,
or no deal. We'll tell you next Doug Otlip Show,
(33:28):
Fox Sports Radio. We're gonna take it a Golden State
and take it to We're not the Golden State. We're
in the Golden State. We'll take it to Northern California.
Get an update on the um, the litany of injuries
with the Warriors, most importantly Steph Curry. When will he
be back? What can we expect from him in the postseason?
(33:49):
That up coming next hour. Then Bobby Hurley, Arizona State's
head coach, will give us his thoughts on the n
c A Tournament, and honestly, we'll give us get his
thoughts on what went wrong. He had the hottest team
in the country and then he had the coldest team
in the n c A Tournament, and they really were
one possession away from beating Syracuse, but instead Syracuse goes
all the way to the Sweet six team. We'll do
(34:10):
that at two o'clock on the West, five o'clock on
the east in the meantime, let's play a game. This
is game tied side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Car
shoppy can be confusing terms like dealer, prize list, prize,
(34:31):
invoice price. You see what other people is paying for
the car you want. You can recognize a good price
when you see one, whether you're ready to buy a
new or used Carver's true card into a more confident
car buying experience. Dan by what he got today? Doug
we of got's big deal, little deal, no deal? All right,
let's start out in the National Football League. Big deal,
little deal or no deal that the Steelers will have
(34:53):
dinner with draft prospect and Elice. You're running back Darius Guiss.
According to ESPN, he's Levian Bell's future or is in
the year in Pittsburgh. I think that's um, that's a
little deal. I mean, first of all, Darius, guys, are
we sure he's a first round pick? We positively could
be a second round pick. Um. But I also think, look,
(35:16):
if somebody is willing to overpay for Levy On Bell,
you're replaceable. What what we've seen is that younger players,
and this is true in baseball and in football and
in basketball, younger players. Younger legs also cost you less
money and they're under club control longer. Why should I
(35:39):
give a long term contract to a guy who's missed
games and a guy who wants to be overpaid for
a position. That why we can get two or three,
We can get darius guys, and we can go get
a couple of veterans off the street, all for less
money than it costs to keep Levian Bell. And Levian
Bell can be a pain in the asking. He doesn't
want to come to the training camp. So yeah, I
think that's a But it's a little deal because I
(36:00):
think most teams are going to take a long, hard
look at players as they're trying to assess what they
need and what they don't need. Big deal, little deal
or no deal that. Cowboys VP Stephen Jones says the
team needs to talk to Dez brian about his contract
as he's do twelve and a half million dollars in Uh,
(36:21):
tell me again how they worded it? Well, big deal,
little deal or no deal that. Stephen Jones says, the
team needs to talk to Dez Bryant's about his contract.
That's a little deal or very well known deal. I
mean I think it's a big deal because the name
does Brian, but the reality, the reality is he's overpaid
for his level of skill at this particular time. That's
a little deal, big deal, little deal or no deal.
(36:43):
That Johnny Manzel is selling his own spring leg jersey
for seventy bucks on his website. For thirty dollars more,
he'll sign it. That's a big deal. That's that's that
it actually says the Spring League on it and it
has a number two. I mean the thirty dollar up
charge just for the autograph is that's that is autographs
(37:05):
only worth thirty bucks now, right? He he was getting
more when he was getting more after Texas A and
M with his footballs that he did or did not sign. Right.
Maybe it's like a one bedroom and two bedroom apartment,
you know, you just add the bedroom and it's just
a little bit more. I don't know. A big deal,
big deal, little deal or no deal that MLB dot
Com reports Mets health fielder team Tebow is going to
(37:27):
start the season in Double A. Uh. That's a big
deal considering he had a disastrous spring, isn't it. I
Mean the Mets are I just continue to tell us
they don't care how bad he is. They want to
promote him. Yeah, and MLB dot Com, the Mets reporter
even said this could have Tebow at double A. Then
you move him off to triple A at some point
(37:49):
during the middle of the season, and then you know
what happens if you're out of it in September. Hello,
big leagues, Um, big deal, little deal or no deal.
That Trailblazer forward Evan Turner is link to pay the
two thousand dollar technical fine that was given the Terence
Ferguson to the Thunder after Turner shoved him in last
night's game. He says he'd pay for an opposing player's
(38:10):
fine for that. That's a big deal, right, That's essentially
a bounty that he's putting out there. Well, this is
what it came down to. Turner explained that he was
actually the one at fault. That he should never have
shoved Ferguson because he's like ten years older than him.
He said he wouldn't want a veteran doing that to
a younger guy on his team, like maybe Zach Collins,
(38:31):
the rookie from Gonzaga. He says that veterans shouldn't be
messing with a rookie, so Turner felt he was wrong.
Ferguson ended up getting the technical and Turner says, I'll
pay for it. Kind of like some unwritten rule that
I didn't know. Okay, I I kind of misunderstood the story.
Oh I remember, and I remember the little the little
little dust up that they had in the game. Um,
that's a little deal. I think that happens more more
(38:53):
often than you think. I didn't realize that there was
a code finally, big deal, a little deal. I honestly
didn't either. Yeah, I didn't. I had no idea big deal,
a little deal or no deal that When I texted
my mom today for a family member's phone number and
said thank you, she just responded, why w so my mom?
And is that is that a big deal that she
knows text abbreviations that I didn't know. I didn't know
(39:15):
that you could just do that and say you're welcome.
I didn't that that's big, that's you. That's actually a
big deal. That's your mom, now big of your family.
This is game time on the Duck Gottli Show. Okay,
So what Twitter abbreviations or what Twitter slang do you use? Buyer,
(39:35):
I use an F y I a lot. And by
the way, bt W, what about you Ryan Music? What
what Twitter? I use those ones that Dan talked about
Every once in a while, I'll drop an I m
O in my opinion, Yeah, but that's pretty much it.
I'm not big on the K. I do use thumbs
(39:56):
up a lot, regular user of the thumbs up pound
two Um. I like the okay one, the okay one,
any any other any abbreviations, any and acronyms you use.
I think for me bt W, they're all they're all
good at they're all usable for me. Yeah wait wait
so and so so none yet all right from Ramos,
(40:18):
great great music. If you kill his mic, that would
be great outstanding. John has sent me an F Yes, yes,
I do t Y for thank you uh Today. A
matter of fact, Jim Jackson, who's gonna host Dan Patrick
with me, was texting me and I did a who
dis because I hadn't had had a different number saved
for Jim Jackson, and I said who did? And he
(40:41):
was like j J. I was like JJ reddick, He's
like Jim Jackson. I was like, oh, sorry, my bad.
Literally the only thing but like, those are the two
JJ's I think I know, but I do have both.
I do have both. There what I thought was previous
numbers saved. So who this is? That's that's a popular
that's very popularism. Everybody has a price. If I'm the giants,
(41:04):
I know my price to ship off Odell Beckham. We
discussed next What up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Welcome in. I hope you had a great weekend. Great weekend?
Do do do? Do do? Everybody has a price, right
(41:27):
and now I'm not talking about Stormy Daniels. Anybody make
out better yesterday than Janice and Dakumpo. You had in
the East Coast, you had Duke Kansas, huge ratings over
time leading up to sixty minutes with Stormy Daniels, and
in between was a fluff piece on the amazing story
(41:47):
of Jannison to Dakumpo. You can't you simply can't get
any better than that. Cannot I can't get any better
than that? So I look at it and and um,
I'm just blown away, blown away by the idea that
(42:09):
um jannest Danny Coopo. It's almost it was almost like
a plant, like how did he forget about the fact
that sixty minutes to the fluff peace story on him,
but the idea that they did a fluff peace story
leading up to the Stormy Daniel's interview, Like man, this
is great. The juxtaposition of a feel good story of
a family that immigrates to grease and then he immigrates
the United States and takes over the NBA world against
(42:36):
a adult film star and the now president of the
United States and uh alleged relationship that goes back what
was it twelve years ago? Pretty amazing. Giants co owner
John Murra took up previously far fetched notion that Odell
(43:00):
come Jr. Could be traded and he turned it into
a plausible reality. He was asked whether it was possible possible?
This is a prior to the NFL's owners meetings, which
are currently taking place. Take a listen to John Mark.
I'm tired of answering questions about O'Dell's behavior, and you
(43:24):
know what the latest incident is, and um, I think
he knows what we expect of him and now it's
up to him. That did not sound like a sterling
review of said employee, did it. He also said that
was it when you're three and thirteen and played poorly
(43:46):
as we played. I wouldn't say that anyone is untouchable.
He did that. Those two cents, those two statements came
out of the same get man right. So look, here's
the thing. Everybody on some level is a tradeable asset.
(44:06):
I'm not gonna lie. I'm gonna just tell you I'm
a tradable asset too. It's how hard are you? How
how difficult does it replace what you do? How expensive
is it? And can you end up benefiting from it?
So I look at it and I say, wait a second. Now,
Jarvis Landry was just traded, wasn't he? Jarvis Landry is
(44:31):
now a member of the Cleveland Browns. They still have
a ton of pick. Cleveland still has a bunch of picks,
and the giants likely want to move up. And so
what is the what's the what? What's he worth? And
so what I what I heard from Ryan Music Ruler's
(44:53):
day was go ahead, Ryan, share what you thought, what
your original statement was in what you thought Odell Beckham Jr.
Was worth? If someone offers, if they start with offering
a first round pick, I'm seriously listening as to what
they're willing to you know what the terms of the
negotiations would be. If they're at least starting with, hey,
(45:16):
how about a first round pick for Odell? Then you
I am seriously considering it. All right, well, let's let's
let's let's let's take a breath and remember who Dave
Getleman is right now. Dave Gettleman is a guy that
said that, you know, it's about the hog Miley's or whatever,
it's about the guys on the inside, isn't it now
(45:37):
what he said? Correct? He comes from an organization in
the Carolina Panthers who traded away. Well, first, um, they
got rid of Steve Smith and went to Super Bowl.
That was when Dave Getleman was there, wasn't he? You
guys remember that, people like man Dave Gettleman, how are
(45:58):
you getting rid of Steve Smith? Go back and look
at the timeline. Steve Smith goes away, they go to
a Super Bowl. Those two things did happen. Steve Smith
was still productive, but the Carolina Panthers were a better
football team even without his production. That did happen, right
Even go to this year, Kelvin Benjamin was the favorite
(46:18):
target of his quarterback and their offense got better after
Kelvin Benjamin was jettisoned mid season. So to anyone who
says Dave Geteman would never do it, I know he
wasn't in Carolina this year when they did do it.
But he was in Carolina when they got rid of
Steve Smith, and he wasn't Carolina when they went to
(46:41):
the Super Bowl after they got rid of Steve Smith.
The problem with the idea of a first round pick is, like,
you better be sure Calvin Ridley is Calm Ridley's the
number one wide receiver on most people's boards. Like that
(47:01):
seems this is not a wide receiver deep draft. So
even though I mean Courtland Sutton from s m U,
who's a big wide receiver and he did like big
wide receivers when he was in Carolina, Dave Gentleman did.
He's probably the number two. Maybe Christian Kirk, who some
people think is the best. He's got great quick twitch.
(47:22):
Some people think he could be an Odell Beckham Jr.
But to me, there's a lot of risks there. If
you just go a one for one, you give me
one pick. If you go to for one a first
and a third, I'm all ears because now I got
the chance to get a Christian Kirk and another player,
(47:44):
and I get relief not only from his from Odell salary,
but the nuisance that is Odell Beckham Jr. And So
when you woke up this morning, if I would have
told you no way, no way with a trade O O.
Beckham Jr. He wants to be paid more than any
wide receiver has ever been paid before. He's constantly in
(48:07):
the news. He hasn't been healthy, wasn't healthy his first
four games with his career, only healthy last four games
of last year. And though he is a ridiculous talent,
you have a general manager that trade away hall of
Fame wide receiver. Steve Smith is a Hall of Fame
wide receiver, and his team got better. There is Preston's
(48:30):
all these guys all they whatever they did to b C.
That's why I tell you John Dorsey in Cleveland is
going to do exactly what they did in Kansas City
at quarterback this year. Al Right, he got Tyrod Taylor.
He's fine. They pay him sixteen million dollars this year.
They'll get rid of him next year. And whoever they
draft this year will be the starting quarterback next year.
Because that's what they did with Pat Mahomes. The same
(48:53):
is true with gentleman get him and did this in
Carolina and it helped his quarterback. And I would guess
that's what he's gonna say here if I can get
some offensive line help and a wide receiver for a
wide receiver who we don't really want to pay, who
are even our owner? I mean, did you to play
(49:14):
that for me one last time? This is the sound
of a guy in John Mara who's had enough. I'm
tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior and you know
what the latest incident is. And um, I think he
knows what we expect of him, and now it's up
to him. I think he knows what we expected him.
(49:36):
Now it's up to him. Yes, rhyme music. The issue
with the Giants, And if i'm then is everything that
has been done with Odell. As soon as Eli is done,
he now de facto becomes your leader of the team,
(49:58):
whether you like it or not. Is what are are
you gonna if you draft, say Sam Donald Josh Rosen
a quarterback at number two, do you really think that
that quarterback is going to take control of the team
over Odell? And so now he becomes your leader of
the team, and you've only ever bent over backwards to
make him happy. Like it sort of seems like you
(50:21):
have to get rid of him in order to in
order for him to realize that he is not going
to be able to continue to act the way that
he acts and make these type of demands and be
able to run the franchise himself. Pat Leonard says, uh,
the l A Rams. According to multiple sources, I have
talked with the Giants and are pursuing a possible trade
for Odell Beckham Jr. To turn him from a big
(50:45):
Apple phenomenon to a Hollywood star. I'm going to tell
you right now this Rams thing. Ramos Ramos is our
resident Rams fan. You in or out, well, I'm in
And I just told Ryan they're becoming like the Golden
State Warrior Is of the NFL. They're grabbing every top
player that they can find, or any All star they
can find, just put them on one team for one year,
(51:06):
just like go for it. Yeah, I feel like this.
So that's a bad idea, like a keep to leave
and Marcus Peters in their defensive backfield, possibly a Dominican
Sioux right now and Dominican Sioux and Odell Beckham Jr.
Like Okay, Matt House, why could why does nobody want
(51:29):
to have these guys? Like okay, it'll be fun to watch,
be fun to watch. But man, the rams, the rams
that give me your tired, you're you're, they're not. They're
not even like the Statue of Liberty giving your wretched masses.
(51:50):
They want give me your best, most truculent star who
wants to be ridiculously overcompensated and he's replaceable. And other
teams have been succe ausful when they've gotten rid of guys,
And let's put them all out there with Aaron Donald
and the rest of our dudes, and hope Jared Goff
gets in the ball a bunch. The The upside is obvious,
(52:12):
it would be amazing. But the downside, I mean, look,
I think Sean McVeigh is great. I think they're coaching
staff is great. But I think part of it was
that there was the expectations were lowered because of mcveigh's
age and because of how bad they were with Jeff Fisher.
(52:34):
Now you raise expectations, You're bringing all these egos a
totally different deal. Be fascinating. You're absolutely fascinating. When you're

Sports Radio, Bobby Hurley, is you on the top of
next hour? To do Do Do Do? Do? Do Do do?
People freaking out about that? The interesting interview between Leonard
Hamilton's and Dana Jacobson. We'll play it for you a
(54:44):
little bit later on the show. And is it is
it possible for Dana to look really good and Leonard
Hamilton's not to look nearly as bad as I think
Twitter would like to portray him is looking bad because
that's what I saw, and I'll wasn't like, oh, kudos
to asking the question. Wasn't because the question she asked um.
(55:06):
I think there could have been a little adjustment to
when in the process of the interview she asked it.
But there was some great stuff that Dana was able
to do within that interview which showed I think she's
really really good at sideline, really good. But there's a
lot of other things going on. I want to take
you to the Bay Area. I want to take it
(55:26):
to New York. Let's tackle the stories that I think
matter to most of you. We don't know everything, but
we know people that know what you want to know.
You know, it sounds like you meet a guy. I
got a guy. Joe Fortenbaud joins us. He's got a
(55:48):
great show. It's Joe Lo and DIBs point seven. The
game in the Bay Area, Uh Joe, Uh. People freaking
out about Steph curR hurting his knee. You know, it's
more conglomeration or amalgamation of the fact that not only
Steph Curry hurt his knee Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks,
but earlier in the day, Madison Bumgardner broke his hand
(56:10):
in his final spring training tune up um of the
spring before the Giants came north to get ready to
take on the Dodgers Thursday. So everyone's trying to sit
through what the bigger problem is at the moment. For
the Giants, it feels as if the seasons done before
it gets started. For the Warriors, it's kind of an
eerie split between the fan base. They've had so much
confidence watching what these guys have done over the last
(56:32):
three plus years that I don't think anyone is in
full panic mode just yet, but there's definitely some concern
considering a couple of years ago and Step hurt his
knee against Houston, he was never the same and had
guys like Kevin Love locking him down, which you would
never see happen to a healthy Step locking him down
in the NBA Finals. So for right now, the thought
(56:53):
process is that he'll be back for the second round
of the playoffs and that they should be able to
get by a first round opponent before Step needs to
come back to the court. Great stuff, okay Um then
there's the whole idea that, in addition to guys being hurt,
they've been coasting. UM. It sounds great to think, Okay,
(57:13):
they're just gonna start playing again, but how realistic to
think is it to think they can just decide we're
gonna start playing now and start running rough shod over
the NBA, over the Utah Jazz in the first round
of the playoffs. That's you know what, that's the interesting
team that you bring up done, because that's the one
team no one wants to see. If you don't have
Steph Curry. They've got a habit of slowing the game down,
(57:34):
making it physical, probably have the ability to put a
couple of elbows into Kevin Durant's ribs, which we know
are not. So that's the first round matchup. A lot
of people are kind of keeping a very close eye
on UM. No doubt they've been coasting. They've pretty much
admitted it that it's very difficult this year to get
up for these Tuesday and Thursday games against teams like
Orlando and Atlanta. But I think we have seen on
(57:57):
numerous occasions throughout the course of the season, when the
situation is called for it you've gotten a first class effort.
I think back to a month or so ago Saturday
night at home against the Boston Celtics and what felt
like a playoff game from start to finish. Kyrie Irving
was absolutely brilliant, but the Warriors did what they needed
to do to prevail in that game. I kind of
wish the Warriors were healthy to a point where they
(58:20):
had Houston late in the season here so we could
see what that game would look like. But I think
that's better served for all of us if they meet
in the Western Conference finals site unseen beforehand, Okay, and
then and then I'm trying to think who I'm trying
to look at the matchups. Who would they face in
the second round? Well, you're probably looking at um Portland
or Okay See. So that's the combination right now, depending
(58:40):
on how this thing would shake down. We had that
discussion late last week. Who would you rather face Portland
or Okay? See. Personally, I'd rather see the Warriors take
on Portland's no disrespect, we loved Dame Lillard here in
the Bay Area, but the Warriors have had a lot
of success over them regular and postseason the last few years.
I liked the idea of sending Houston up against okay see,
while I see if the Rockets prevailing, I think that's
(59:02):
the perfect series for them to find out who they
really are. Um you you have the story of Russell
Westbrookshire current m v P James Harden is about to
win the m v P. Hart used to be west
Brooks understudying okay see. I could see a matchup like
that getting very chippy, and if Houston gets caught. Looking
ahead to the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, I
(59:23):
think you can see a series like that goes six
games with a lot of offense. So I'm kind of
keeping an eye out with that one. That's the matchup
Warrior fans are hoping they get. Joe forton ball point

(59:43):
I got a guy. Let's go to New York where
Dan Duggan covers the New York Giants beat for the
Athletic at d doug in d u g g A
and twenty one is his Twitter handle. What do you
make of the reports that the Rams are now interested
in trying to make a trade for Odell Beckham Jr. Yeah,
it's in kind of a world when twenty four hours
(01:00:05):
or so since John Marrat first spoke at the Owners
beatings yesterday. Um, I really can't speak to whether the
Rams of interesting matter it would make sense for them.
I don't know why he wouldn't be interested in Odell.
Um I don't see the Giants trading him as much
as uh, those those talks have kind of heated up here.
I still don't have a hard time being that falling
trader on a trade unless someone really will to blow
(01:00:25):
them away. And you know, with the Rams, you know,
with their draft pick, they wouldn't be able to give you,
you know, a top ten pick or anything this year.
So um, it seems hard to see them come in
to terms with it a trade like that. But uh,
you know, John matth did say that kind of you know,
the phone is on and he's listening. So if the
team has has got blown away, I guess certainly as
possible to two things leading me to believe it's it's
(01:00:46):
more than possible. Okay, The first is Getleman did this
with Steve Smith, Right, He's got a Hall of Fame
wide receiver and he jettison Steve Smith and the team
was better because of it. Do you think that plays
into his his idea that a we can of the
good team with it without a superstar wide receiver. Uh? Yeah,
But I mean it's a different circumstance. Especially Smith is
kind of at the end of the road, you know,
(01:01:07):
you know, it's twenty five years old. I mean, ideally,
that's the type of talent you're building around. Whereas with
Gentleman definitely has a hardline stance with aging stars. I
mean he just rated JPP for you know, a third
round pick, a guy who is you know, got a
big contract and they're in thirty again, that was you know,
really just entering his prime. You wouldn't think that, uh,
you know, to equate that some of those scenarios because
you also got to keep in mind Gelman uh gave
(01:01:29):
extensions to core player as well as in Carolina. I know,
you get a lot of attention for the guys who
let go at the end of their careers, but he
also you know, walked up some of those core pieces
like you know, Cam Newton and Luke Keikley and guys
like that while he was there, who you know, we're
I think they're more uh comfortable to where Odell is
in his career right now. No, yeah, I don't necessarily know.
I agree with you. It's not the same. It's not
a parallel in terms of where they are in their career.
(01:01:51):
Obviously the values would change. It's more the idea that
your team can more than survive without him. That that's
that that that's the that's the bigger one. What about Like,
in listening to Mara say I'm tired of talking about
Odell Beckham Jr. And the off the field stuff, it
does feel like whether whether he's reached that point or
(01:02:12):
hasn't reached that point, he's pretty close to the I've
had enough of the of the other stuff. Is that
Is that fair to read into his voice? Yeah? I mean,
because it's funny you go back to the first day
camp last year, Mara spoke, he only speaks you buy
a handful of times a year, so every time you know,
it's gonna be newsworthy, And at that point he was
basically saying you it's just a matter of when not
if I mean, that's gonna be a giant for life.
(01:02:32):
We're gonna get it done. It's just, you know, when
and he certainly walked that back in the you know,
two or three times he's spoken since then. Obviously one
was after the the infamous dog being celebration. He didn't
like that. And then, um, you know, once Geedleman and
Shermer came in, Um, you know, Marek kind of step
back again saying, we'll listen, he's gonna have to get
on the same page with kind of the new regime here.
So yeah, he he certainly is getting a lot closer
(01:02:55):
to that line. Um, And again, yeah, it's certainly. It's
it's not impossible to the trade him. I just for
me to fathom them getting anywhere near the value. I
mean o'delli is still sign this year and he's eight
and a half billion dollars. I mean, you're still not
going to beat that value. It's just the question becomes,
if you don't feel comfortable handing over a nine figure
check at some point in the near future, maybe you
trade the mat just at least get something back for him.
(01:03:16):
What do you think they do it too? That's a
great question. There's done a pretty good job of kind
of throwing a lot of misdirections. And you know, I
think people, uh that the consens that seems to be
that they won't take quarterback. Um, you know, I'm leaning
that way. I think they should have. I think this
has a gold opportunity to draft the next Elie Manning
to be your quarterback for fifteen years. But it wouldn't
(01:03:37):
surprise me if they don't go that route. Um, you know,
Barclay's name definitely comes up a lot of you know,
Quinte Nelson, I really love him, the guard for Nodain.
So I they just have to make up their minds
that they're going all in and really believe that they
can win with Eli in like a one or two
year window. Again, I just don't think a three and
thirteen teams should be looking that way with a thirty
seven dollars quarterback. And then listen, if you trade Odell,
(01:03:58):
you might as well just cut you and really cut
the thing and start from scratch with the quarterback at
number two, So that that number two pick is really
gonna tell a lot about kind of the direction of
this franchise. Obviously, I tend to agree with you on
a bunch of those accounts. Dan dug In, who of
course covers the Giants beat for The Athletic, follow him
on Twitter at d dug Into a one damn great stuff.

for Odell Beckham Jr. But it may not be a
first round pick. Of course, the Rams one of the
teams that have contacted the Giants, according to the New

according to the NFL Network, says he's not gonna play
without a new contract, while Giants co owners Tish the

The Michael Bennett story. Look, I thought I was really
bothered by what Michael Bennett did in Las Vegas. Okay,
and we all remember what Michael Bennet did in Last fir.
Let me reset it for you really quickly. Michael Bennett
was in Las Vegas? Was that for the Mayweather from
(01:06:25):
Mayweather fight? Was that when he was in Vegas? Trying
to think exactly when that incident was. I may have
been for the fight Mayweather McGregor. I think he was
in and there was a report of an active shooter
in the casino. Cops came in and he was hiding
behind this big slot machine or something and then uh,
and then ran for it, right, and the cops tracked
(01:06:48):
him down, tackled him, cuffed him and stuffed him, and uh,
he thought that it was an abusive power by the
by the cops. He said they put a gun to
his head and he believed they only did that because
he was black. And then there's video of them, you know, saying,
you know, don't move, freeze whatever to everybody, and then
(01:07:10):
he goes running for and they chase him down and
it like, look, here's the thing. Um, I thought it
was really strongly worried what the cops said in terms
of the the the head of police, the chief of
police said in regards to backing up his police officers,
and the only reason you do that is if boy,
(01:07:31):
you you better know what the video says. And they
went through the I don't know. It's like a hundred
and fifty different camera angles, and they all, by their estimation,
held up the police officers accounts of what took place.
It was a bad look for him. And remember at
the time he made the accusations, it was a short
(01:07:52):
while after the event. It wasn't like the very next
day he was like, hey, I was wrong by the cops.
It was like two weeks later, three weeks later, and
you know, the the Seahawks came out, the NFL came
out in support of him, And when the video came out,
all of a sudden, everybody's like whoa. The story went
away really quickly. So I thought it was a terrible
look for him. Honestly, it was probably a worse look
(01:08:14):
for the NFL because all they had to do was
wait for the video to come out before they gave
their outright support to a player, but to charge him
with the crime sixteen months after it's alleged to have
happened when a paraplegic woman, elderly paraplegic woman was alleged
(01:08:35):
to have been pushed in her wheelchair but not tipped
over and not hurt. Yeah, that doesn't seem that something
stinks about that story. It just it feels like it
feels like payback for false accusations. Doesn't it to anybody else?
(01:08:59):
Don't love don't love it at all. Speaking of what
I don't love at all, We're headed to San Antonio,
and the good part of San Antonio is River Walk.
Great place for the Final four. Weather's good people are nice.
(01:09:19):
Text Max Alamo, I could do without any more Charles Barkley,
Spike Lee and uh what's his name? Commercials? Samuel Jackson. Right,
I can do without those outside that San Antonio great
site for the Final four, great, not good great um.
(01:09:40):
On the other hand, on the downside, you have the Spurs,
who we never hear anything about. I still don't have quiet.
Leonard Friday. Tony Parker, who suffered a similar injury to
Quiet Leonard, had this to say, I've been through it.
It was a rehab for me too for eight months,
you know, so same kind of injury my mind was
(01:10:01):
a hundred times worse, but the same kind of injury
and just trying to stay positive him. So when I
did my injury, forty eight hours I was in surgery.
I didn't take like two weeks and go the options
and stuff like that. For me, it was a no
brainer because I feelt like we have the best medical
team in the world. That's a whow. I had the
(01:10:22):
same injury, only it was a hundred times worse. I'm
so tough. I am so much tougher and braver and
smarter than Kawhi Leonard. Like they're on the same basketball team.
They worked for the same franchise, for the same owner
in the same city. And that's what was said. You know,
(01:10:42):
I had the same injury. It was a hundred times worse.
But I had to say, he sounds like old man.
In my day, it snowed and we had to walk
uphill to and from school. It was uphill both ways.
You'll know, back in France, I was brought up where
(01:11:05):
you were in tough neighborhood. I asked the policeman how
long away worked to the metro. He said, I don't know.
Nobody ever made it that's how tough m life I
had growing up in fetis right. That's what he basically said.
That's also what's known as the beginning of the end,
(01:11:26):
or maybe it's the middle of the beginning to the
end of Kawuai Leonard and leaving San Antonio, Pop called
him out. He Pop said, don't expect him back, and
then man who fell in line, and then Tony Parker
goes I had the same injury, he was a hundred
times worse and look at me. I'm okay now, that's
(01:11:51):
what he said. That is what he said. Amazing, really
really amazing. I mean like they look, there's things you
don't do about your teammates, things you don't air about
your team. And the thing that we talked about this
(01:12:11):
all the time on the show, right like I don't
tell people how to pray. I don't tell people how
to mourn. I try not to tell people how to
spend money, like what to spend your money on. And
I don't go like, oh, was bad purchase. I'll self deprecate.
I'll say, hey me, like any other dude would. Uh.
You know, when we're young, we spend money on rims
(01:12:32):
and tires, right, boy, I wish I had gotten that back.
When I played in France, I got a pair of
Armani jeans, way too tight, way too expensive, not useful
at all. That was before tight jeans were in, and
by the time type jeans were in, I didn't have
them anymore. But I don't I try not to criticize
how other people pray more and spend their money. You
(01:12:53):
know what, in the NBA and professional sports, you don't
talk about somebody else's injuries like talking about their family.
And if you want to draw reference to having a
similar injury, just say I had a similar injury and
here's what I went through to rehab. You don't say
it was a hundred times worse and I used our
doctors right away. I did not take time off because

Doug Gottlib Show, Fox Sports Radio Jeff Goodman reporting that
Ryan Odom is a greeting principal to stay at University
of Maryland, Baltimore County. Um, so there you go. As
(01:14:21):
of now he's staying there. Hmm. Interesting every day. This
time we like to play for you a portion of
a previous radio show and now San Patrick show proceeds
Colin Cowherd on most Fox Sports Radio affiliates, and you
can hear him as well on x M. I think
(01:14:43):
he's on x M two oh two, now is it right? Um?
You now he's on on three three? What's the XM channel?
I don't know what the XM channel is. I listened
to him on five seventy in l A. Dan had
this really interesting series of tidbits from some sources in
the NFL regards to who the Browns and Giants really
want the upcoming draft. The former NFL scout said, here's
(01:15:05):
the deal. The Giants love Sam Donald, but the Browns
are making it seem like they love Sam Donald because
they want the Giants to pony up something even though
the Giants at number two. And you know, so, the
point is, I think the Browns really like Josh Allen
(01:15:25):
from from my intel over the weekend. They love Josh Allen.
They got Tyrod Taylor right now, and if they could
get Josh Allen, get something from the Giants and then
also get Sae Kwon Barkley, the Browns are in really
good shape. They would feel like, all right, we did
some positive things now. But the current NFL scout said,
(01:15:46):
what you see with Josh Allen, imagine Ben Roethlisberger with mobility,
and I went, that's kind of scary. He goes, no,
that this is he's the best athlete. Lamar Jackson, you know,
you look at him and he's great athlete. Josh Allen
is athletic in an NFL game. Mhm um, Look here's
(01:16:08):
the thing on Josh Allen. Wherever he goes, they have
to have a starting quarterback in front of him because
he's just not ready. That fits Cleveland. That also fits
the New York Giants. I think he probably fits Cleveland
better because the idea is the bad weather in that
division is never going to change and you're gonna have
to throw through it. It fits a little bit with
(01:16:29):
New York, but not as much as in the a
f C. North Stands. The reason it's it's it's a
logical conclusion, and can and can the Cleveland Browns make
everyone think they're taking Sam Donald drive up the price
and make the Giants or whomever else the Buffalo Bills
jump up and take Sam Donald number one overall so
(01:16:54):
that they can land a ton of other picks and
continue to fill out or maybe trade those picks for
Nodell Beckham Jr. One uh um. And by the way,
the Jets are sitting there in third position, they might
get the third quarterback on their board after moving three
(01:17:14):
second round picks to move up three picks. That feels
like that that trade could be an absolute abject disaster
for the Jets, who don't have enough talent around whatever
quarterback they draft to have them succeed right away. So
do I believe that? Um? Do I believe that Dan's
(01:17:38):
sources are correct? Sure they are, Sure, they're pretty good.
On the other hand, right now, I don't believe anything
from anybody right, Like man, it's one thing in the
real world to not believe or trust anybody because people
are really hard. Like man, I don't know. I don't
believe anybody anymore because no one seems to all the truth.
(01:18:01):
It seems doubly so the NFL draft, it seems like
all of this is propaganda. Yes, you have a look
in your face like you want if you're the Giants,
is it simply enough? Because we were talking about the
flip flop? What else would the Browns have to give
you if you were trying to give them Odell to
(01:18:22):
move from two to number one, if you're the if
you're the if you're the Giants and you're giving up
Odell to the Browns and they're like Odell to swap picks,
well they have a ton of picks, um, Because that's
that's pretty valuable to be in the driver's seat. Now,
granted you're getting a lot in return, would you give
them the number one pick or the number four pick?
(01:18:43):
But if you're the if you're the Giants, you don't
want the number four pick. I mean, I guess you
want the number four pick. But really you want to
be able to take your guy at number one. Oh
yeah to get Donald Yeah yeah, number you move up
one spot and give up Odell. They'd have to get
something l some return as well, more than just one
spot the Browns would the Browns would have to give
(01:19:06):
up probably I'd say move up one spot and then
switch and then give them four as well. Would you
do that? No, that's no. Now that's two first round picks.
You gave up. No you didn't. You moved that. You
gave up one spot and you get you get the
other one in return. M yeah. And then the Giants
can get their quarterback in the future and get stake
Kwon Barkley or get whatever lineman. Never meat head lineman
(01:19:27):
they want. We'll take that meat head and we'll take
stake Kwan Barkley and you can take you know that
way you can take and then we'll take or yeah, no, no, no,
they take excuse me, they take a quarterback and not
sake one or a quarterback or sake one or a
quarterback in alignment, and the Jets would almost luck out
(01:19:49):
in this situation because if the Browns really do want
Josh Allen, then that means they could end up with
Josh Rosen. Correct, because if it's Sam Donald Josh Allen,
then they get Josh Rosen. So the Jets may have
totally messed this up and still end up with the
right pick, which is good for them because clearly they
haven't been able to find a quarterback in quite some time. Right,
(01:20:09):
this is that they would do what's what's known as
the dumb and dumber. Just when I think you couldn't
do anything dumber, you totally redeem yourself right Like, wait,
you mean to tell me you you moved heaven and
Earth to trade up three spots and you still don't
get the quarterback that you want. Wait, no, you still
don't get pole position in the quarterbacks. Nope, we got
(01:20:30):
the third best quarterback in the draft. Huh? What do
you think? Guys? How do you like that trade? Again?
I don't really like it that much, but you could
end up getting the number one guy on your board anyway.
Something tells me, though, I do kind of think that
everybody is in the know that. I don't think it's
a great plan from the Jets, but I'm guessing that
(01:20:53):
they know what's gonna happen at one or two, or
have a good guess and what's gonna happen in one
or two, and they'll still be able to get who
they want. Otherwise, why would you have done that? Online

(01:21:16):
Bobby Hurley will join us next. I want to ask
him he played in three final fours, three what do
you remembers about all of them? I want to ask
himbout his team this year, and then I want to
ask him about what Grace Salen went through yesterday. I guarantee,
I can guarantee this. I have not pre interviewed Bobby
about this. I haven't asked him a question about it ever,
(01:21:37):
but I will guess. You know, do you know who
he lost to in his last college game? Once I
guess Hall of Fame point guard. Second round of the tournament.
Anybody got nothing? Jason Kidd, Jason Kidd's right, Jason Kidd lost,
Jason Kidd John about one out of fifty. Ain't bad? Yeah,
(01:21:58):
not bad? Um, So I'm to ask him if he
remembers losing losing the game is last game more vividly
than he remembers winning those national championships, right, Because I'm
gonna guess he remembers losing more. It's the weird thing
about the term. It's the crazy thing about how ad
(01:22:19):
athletes mind works. We get you ready for the Final
four with the guy who played in three of them,
Bobby Hurley. Next on the Doug Gotliep Show, Fox Sports Radio.
What up? S Doug gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Uh, look,
here we are four teams playing for a national championship.
And I said this to start the show, and actually
(01:22:40):
I said it before the term it ever began, that
there's a good chance we'll end up. Even though it's
a year, a chaotic year between the FBI investigation and
Louisville having a fire Rick Pattino, Uh, and the sense
that there were there was no one eminent team, we
(01:23:01):
still'll probably end up with three we thought we would
would be there and one surprise, lo and behold, what
do we get? Three we thought would be there and
one big surprise. The surprise, obviously is Porter Moser's Loyola team.
How about this? You want it now? Loyala won their league,
won their league tournament, and obviously there was some fortune,
(01:23:24):
some luck to uh to winning their first three games
by a grand total, grand total of UH four points.
But are you guys aware that poor Moser been a
head coach for thirteen years previously never finished about fifth
in his league ever, in any league you've never been in.
(01:23:46):
So some of it's about timing, about having just the
right roster, being just healthy enough, the right matchups, mixing
a little bit of luck. But then there's others to
which we shouldn't be surprised that Jay Wright's team is back.
They were actually the best team to Big East. Didn't
win the regular season, won the Big East tournament, weren't
healthy even though they swept Xavier this year. John B. Line,
(01:24:06):
the professor also magician, had to pull one out of
the Rabbit's hat in the second round against Houston. But
I think everyone respects his coaching acumen. And what he
got out of his teams at West Virginia, got to
lead eight, beat Chris paul Um and you know, took
his team in the national championship game couple years ago
against the Louisville and then you got Bill self is
back for another Final four, in arguably with arguably his
(01:24:29):
least talented roster, considering the litany of first round picks
that he's had previously. UM a lot to get to
with our next guest. So Final four is set. We're
headed to San Antonio. Be there Thursday and Friday. And
a guy who has played in three of them, and
a guy whose team beat Kansas on their own home
floor when they were the hottest team in the world
(01:24:51):
earlier this year is Bobby Hurley. He joins us. The
two time national champion joins us on the Doug Gottlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Bobby, how are you
pretty good? OK? Are you doing good? Man? Um? Have
you taken as it has been long enough to process
what happened to your team from thirteen and oh until
how it ended in the first four? Well, I mean
(01:25:12):
I'm not into making a ton of excuses. I've still
been searching. UM, you know, we were like one minute
away in that Arizona game, in one possession game in
Arizona from being the number one team in the country
on Monday morning after some other teams had lost that
day and we were the last undefeated team. But you know,
(01:25:33):
in Pack twelve league, Clay is tough. I mean, it's
a legit conference. I know some of the team's underperformed
in the nonconference and and hurt and hurt our overall perception.
But we started five at the first in the road,
we started at Arizona and just we're we're fighting an
upheld battle. Just had lost some games early in the
league and UH, and we lost a lot of close
(01:25:54):
games and UH we weren't able to close games out,
whether it was miss free throws or are coming up
with a big basket. And ironically that's how our season
ended with UH, with losing to Syracuse and you had
chances there late in the game to UH to advance
and it just wasn't meant to be. But overall, I
think it's a great step for a program and UH
(01:26:15):
and where things are headed in terms of UH an
overview of the entire season and not just like one
half of the year. Yeah. And the other thing is like, look,
your and your team was this to an integrae. But
the idea of playing small ball, I mean like look, uh,
Michigan plays four out with one big guy plays at
the top of the key, right. Uh. Kansas sometimes plays
with one big guy, has played a substantial portion of
(01:26:39):
the year without a big guy. Um, you know, Villanova
was kind of the first to make a Final four
run with four guards, and they generally play they sometimes
play five guys, their best post players, their point guard.
Um you know, so you look around and and Loyola
plays all their guys can pass, drubble and shooting. They
play outside the three point line. So it's it's it's
(01:26:59):
not like your I isn't capable of winning. A matter
of fact, other people have won with that style. Is it?
It was there anything differently you could have done personnel wise?
I just think, um, you know, we we were really small.
I mean we played four guards. You know in the
games you talked about beating Kansas and Kansas and and
Xavier in in a in a tournament in Vegas. We
(01:27:20):
Uh we had Remy Martin, who's who's six feet Shannon
Evans have six ft tree holders six ft uh, and
then Cody Justice is uh is a lean six four,
so uh, that was a lot of the guys that
were playing major minutes. And then you had a freshman
Romello White, uh you know at the center. And those
were at times our best lineup. But while that's happened,
(01:27:43):
and you really sacrifice some things defensively and if you
can't turn teams over effectively, we're using your quickness, then
you know, you lose it around the basket when respounding
and uh and protection in the paint. So you know,
I think we're we're gonna be a different team next.
We're gonna have a lot more size, uh you know
on a perimeter and uh, I think that's the difference
(01:28:05):
with Kansas sending Kansas is kind of master you know,
the four guards. But you know, if you look at
you know, Graham's got good size, the good size Newman
and and vs is like six seven, so they have,
you know, a four guard alignment that is uh, you
know that's just as is bigger and it's uh you know,
consequently more effective and probably you know better on defense.
(01:28:29):
Bobby Hurley joining us in the Doug Gotlic Show. Do
you remember winning the two nets of the of the
four final games you played. Of seasons at Duke, three
ended in the final four. All all three final four
ended in the championship games. He never lost the semi
final and then of course you lost in the second
round to cal your senior season. What game is most
(01:28:50):
vivid when you search your memories, Uh, it depends how
you want to feel. You know, if you want to
feel good, it's it's uh, you know, it's the Kansas game.
And it was one of my great memories. Just all
the work, all the sacrifice, uh, you know, even the
suffering of the year before, the humiliation of losing to Vegas. Uh,
(01:29:10):
like we did my freshman year, and uh, and to
the next year, come back and and beat Vegas and
then and then go on and beat Kansas. And you know,
I grew up maybe like you did, Doug, just like
dreaming of playing in the final four and and win
in a national championship. I uh, you know, watched the eighties, Uh,
Michael Jordan's team and Patrick Ewing and n C stayed
(01:29:32):
upset and Villanova upset, and those were the things that
I wanted to do as a player. They were they
were more important to me maybe than even getting to
the NBA. So to do that, it was it was special.
But uh, also as a competitor and as an athlete,
you're you remember your greatest failures too, and uh, you know,
I'll never forget how I felt after that first UNLV
(01:29:54):
game my freshman year. Okay, your freshman year, you played
un l V. Um you guys, I mean got just
annihilated in uh in in Denver. It was in outitude.
But you were also sick, right, there's the famous video
of you running to the bathroom um during during the game,
um with with like, I don't want you to spare details,
but you can spare some some detail like how sick
(01:30:15):
were you? Well, I mean I'm sure it was something
to do, you know, maybe with the altitude. But also
you know, we play Arkansas and there was like forty
minutes of house they were you know, picking us up
and trapping and uh, you know, uh it certainly wasn't nerves.
I never really got nervous like that to play, So
it just wasn't feeling well, uh in that game. Kind
(01:30:35):
of pushed through that game. I remember, you know, being
on I VS. You know, after the game and then
the following day too, you know, to try and recover
and get ready to play Monday night again. And uh
so I think that game on Saturday took a lot
out of US. Arkansas was really good and and um,
you know, we just weren't ready for for what you
and l V brought and how good they were. They
just uh you know, they took it to a different level.
(01:30:57):
And I remember Coach k left me in game and
just let me soak it in and you know, absorb
losing and how it felt and uh and the humiliation
of it. I think, uh, you know that, you know,
just embracing that failure was something that helped me the
next year in terms of uh, you know, turning the
script in the final four my sophomore year. All Right,
the juxtaposition of that because you took on a UNLV
(01:31:20):
team that was undefeated and they had to have that
one close game against Ball State I remember, I think
in the second round, but it was a titanic show
that it was a semifinal. What do you remember about
the prep for the following year. But the year, the
game before you won the national champiship against Kansas, what
do you remember. I just remember how great coach Ka
(01:31:40):
was and getting us ready to play, and you know,
he uh talked, he didn't he didn't try and avoid
what happened, you know the year before. He talked about it,
but he said, we're a different team and and we're
ready for this moment. You know, we had come into
into that Final four winning a couple of double digit games.
We were beating teams pretty handling, so we had a
lot of confidence. And then, uh, you know, we just
(01:32:02):
didn't want to feel the way we felt. And we
certainly respected UNLV and no talents that they were, and
you know, they proved that to me. I mean it
was you know, that was the best team that that
I faced. Uh, you know, as a player, just say
at NBA dudes on that team and uh and great
coach and undefeated and the whole thing. But uh, we
were determined, you know, we were mentally thought we responded
(01:32:22):
to any challenge they had. Uh, they hadn't been in
any close games. You know, we had been in a
ton of close games. So I think we're just more
more ready to win down the strengts uh in that
game than they will. Okay, So and I think this
is gonna be a challenge this year, Bobby Hurley joining
his two time national champion head coach of Arizona State.
I think this would be a challenge this year for
(01:32:42):
either Kansas or Villanova, because that looks like that could
be a national championship game. Somebody's gonna have to get
ready to play. Monday night. You end up beating un
l V, a team that beat you by thirty one
the year before, hadn't lost the game. You guys beat
you and l V. How do you not celebrate and
lose track of there's another game to be played well,
because you know, you got to have the discipline and
(01:33:05):
and and the focus understanding. Like we went back to
our hotel and it was chaos. That was our people
couldn't be leave that we just won that game, and
people are going crazy. It was Saturday night, you know,
and and and we just knew that that we were
on a mission at that point to finish it off
that uh, you know, it wouldn't have been looked upon
the same way if we didn't take care of business
(01:33:26):
on Monday night won a national championship. And uh so
we sacrificed, you know, enjoying it the way others did
that night, and you know, I know that we went
back to our room and got arrest and recovered, and
we just brought like a whole different level of confidence
into that championship game just because of the level of
game that we played, you know, to beat U and LV.
(01:33:48):
You know, it definitely helped us. Just we we knew
that we couldn't lose that game if we if we
prepared and uh and and we did, and we were
ready to go on Monday night. All right. The next
year I was, I was at that game, and that
I was. That was Nindy And of course the next
year was in Minneapolis, in the twin city where the
final four is going to be next year. Um, was
it as much fun to do it a second time again?
(01:34:10):
I mean the first time it's the best feeling because
again your experience it for the first time, you're the
last team stand and it's uh, you know, our team
was an up and down year. We lost some games
we uh I believe we had you know, lost got
blown out in the a SEC Championship tournament final. So
there were a lot of adversity to go with, you know,
(01:34:31):
the season as a whole, and to be and to
overcome you know, beat the UNLB team that knowing it
gave us a chance to win that game, and I
mean maybe there was even some self doubt going in
as well, but to do that, it was such a
surprising you know, forty eight hours for us and uh,
and to be champion was special. And the following year
was it was different. I think we we realized, you know,
(01:34:53):
how good we were, that you know, our our first
champions wasn't a fluke, that that we wanted to do
something in the team and hadn't done since U C.
L A. And uh, you know, we just uh, you know,
we wanted to attack people all year and that's kind
of what we did. What do you remember about winning
that one? It was just a little bit tired at
the end. I think it's different when when you take
(01:35:15):
in everyone's best shot and you know do because the
program normally gets that anyway, but when you're you know,
when you're a defending champion, you're you're gonna get everyone's
best and we got it like all year and uh,
you know it was we had the Kentucky game where
we're in the Elite eight that could have went either
way obviously, and and just the dramatic shot in the
emotion with that, and then to go to the final
(01:35:36):
four and have to beat Indiana, a great team coach
by Bobby Knight, and and then the Fab Five. So
it was just a lot of you know, emotion associated
with everything. So just winning was almost like you took
a deep breath and said, all right, you know we
did it. You know we accomplished it. It wasn't as
as uh as dramatic as as the first champion, you
know that. That's the That's the thing I think that
(01:35:57):
is most undersold about both of your national championships is
that is that you there were no you didn't have
any easy path that just opened up for you. Right
like the first year, the first year you wanted, you
had to beat Arkansas and then you had to beat Vegas.
The second year you had to beat the Unforgettables in
Kentucky in one of the best basketball games anyone's ever seen.
(01:36:20):
And then of course you had to beat Indiana and
Bob Knight, and then you had to beat the Fab Five.
Like you took you literally took everybody's best shot, and
you played the best teams as opposed to some teams.
Just the benefit of the bracket, it opens up for you. Yeah,
I mean it. Uh, it did help us some, uh, Doug.
I think our first championship, we we were three seat
I be leaves and I think Ohio State which was
(01:36:42):
the one that Jimmy Jackson is really really good team,
really great record. Uh. You know, they unexpectedly lost I
believed to Saint John's and and even in early in
that tournament, it gave us, you know, more confidence, gott
more momentum. We you know, we we cruised through St.
John's and Yukon year and and then like I said,
we were playing at really high level going into that
(01:37:04):
UNLB games. So it did help there. They're always some
cases where you know you'll get a break, you know
it'll go your way in the tournament, but you can
never you know project you know where it's going to
come from. Last thing, Bobby Hurley joining US, UH, two
time National Championship player, played three final fours, and of
course the head coach of Arizona State. They started out
the year thirteen no lost to Syracuse in the n
(01:37:25):
C turned me kind of have to spend some time
this year on the Doug Out the Show on Fox
Sports Radio. UM, you're gonna watch like you've played in
it so many times. You have your own team, you
have your family. It's not Duke, I don't know if
these coaches you're particularly close to, like you're gonna watch,
Am I gonna watch the Final four? Yeah? Because I
(01:37:46):
mean you're still I know how big a competitor you are.
I know there's part of you that's like, dude, we
should still be playing. Yeah. I mean, look, I couldn't
watch the games really for like three days. And the
first weekend is always my favorite part, just whether I'm
hopefully competing in it or you know, if I'm watching
from the fans perspective. But it's uh so it was tough.
(01:38:07):
I watched my brother's game, his first round game. I
watched Buffalo versus Arizona because I had a vested interest
in both of those games. But otherwise it was hard
for me to watch. I just felt like, you know, again,
we were we were right there in a close game.
Uh couldn't execute and make enough place to to defeat
Syracuse and we had a two lead with seven minutes left,
(01:38:29):
and and that that was a race. So you always
feel like you have regret and you wonder where you
could have you know, done one or two more things
to try and move on and and then to even
see Syracuse play as well as they did in subsequent rounds,
and uh, it's kind of bitter sweet. But uh, you know,
we're just now regrouping, Doug and you gotta you gotta
forge ahead, and we appreciate that we you know, made
(01:38:53):
a tournament this year for the first time and uh
in a couple of years, and now we're looking to
build off that. There's worse things and recovering in the
spring in uh in in temp right, there's there, there
are there are worse things in the world than that. Bobby,
look forward to seeing seeing you hopefully in San Antonio.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Of course, that
always brings back great memories of you as a player
and now watching you as a coach. We appreciate it, alright, absolutely,
(01:39:16):
let's meet. Let's do it, of course, so the check
will be picked up by your brother because he's he's
got a new job, right, That's that's the deal. Danny's
got to pick up the check. When you're dealing with
lifetops and downs like winning or losing a national championship, game.
It helps to know the ins and outs of insurance
that farmers share with your practical knowledge game from ninety
years of experience. We know a thing or two because
(01:39:37):
we've seen a thing or two. Find agent farmers dot com.
There's one NFL team making big time moves that might
not pay off. I'll explain next. Car shopping can be
confusing with terms like dealer price, liz price, an invoice price.
True car shows what other people paid for the car
(01:39:57):
you want. You can recognize a good price when you're
ready to buy a new or used car. Visit True
Car and enjoy more confident car buying experience. Here's a
good one, just proof that anybody can have a Twitter handle.
Nice job sticking up for Michael Bennett. I know you
have to keep that those dollars coming touting your liberal
(01:40:18):
anti cop agenda, but you should get some integrity at
some point in your life. Huh. Let's go back over
for um uh t hands Law, who probably doesn't deserve
the time. I'm going to give one Twitter handle with
fifties six fifty six followers, but I'll give it to him.
(01:40:39):
I'm a sucker, right, um. Actually what I said was
what happened in Las Vegas was embarrassing to Michael Bennett
and to the nfl UM. But I also think it's
equally embarrassing for Houston's police department. If he did something wrong,
that he should be charged with a fellow need for Remember,
(01:41:00):
this is a paraplegic, elderly woman he's alleged to have
assaulted in a in a wheelchair trying to get onto
the field to celebrate with his brother. If he if
he did something wrong, you mean to tell me, at
no time in the past sixteen months could you not
have levied the exact same charges against him. And yes,
(01:41:24):
I think what he did in Las Vegas was awful.
I said as much. So I don't know. This is
not I'm not a liberal. I'm not a conservative. If
you're too stupid to have to label things based upon
what way you think somebody comes from, like, that's not
how I roll. But again, it's proof that there is
no i Q test for Twitter hints. The average i
(01:41:48):
Q is a hundred. That means just as many people
are as close to eighty as there are close to one.
And t hands law cannot listen or he can listen,
but he cannot hear, because I'm no fan of Michael Bennett,
and you don't have to be a fan of Michael
Bennett to go like, hey, that's kind of weird that
the guy's alleged to have assaulted a woman in a wheelchair,
(01:42:10):
even though she didn't fall to the ground, she was
not hurt, she was not hospitalized. It was just he
was probably acting like a jerk trying to get on
the field, that's all. It's fine, don't mind, don't mind.
You charging him with a crime. You had sixteen months
to do so strikes me as very odd, very odd.
(01:42:32):
Uh So the RAMS are apparently apparently the RAMS are
pursuing Odell Beckham Jr. This uh just a day after
we heard from John Marray, the owner of the Giants,
who said basically, kind of had enough, kind of had enough? Yes, right, yes, right, music. Okay, Well,
(01:43:00):
you're you're mentioning the emotioning towards me. I know we
have the sound, I played, we played it earlier. I
got it. I am well aware. Here's the sound Brian
was motioning me for. I'm tired of answering questions about
Odell's behavior. And you know what the latest incident is,
and I think he knows what we expect of him,
(01:43:23):
and now it's up to him. He knows what respective
now it's up to him. I'm tired of this. I
just I'm tired of it. I'm tired of this, tired
of it. I'm tired of right. You hear somebody say
I'm tired of it. That's like I've had enough. Somebody
(01:43:44):
come take this problem off my hands. Somebody come take
this problem off of my hands. Well, the Rams are
offering up an opportunity for somebody to take him off
their hands. And remember this, the same Rams that are
engaged in a contract discussion within Dominican Sue. They've already
acquired a key to lead. They've already acquired Marcus Peters.
(01:44:09):
I do agree on some level with one of the
things Michael Bennett had to say, which is, you do need,
if you want to say, thugs or you need some
quirky personalities in the locker room. I'm okay with that.
I'm really okay with that. But I'm also okay with
(01:44:29):
pointing out that there is a point to which you
get too many one guy, okay, to you get to three.
Now they start meeting. Now you start having problems. Now
you have too many egos, And what the great story
about the Rams was. You went from guys that everybody
said or many had said. People have given Aaron Donald
(01:44:51):
their praise, People have given some of the pieces defensively
the praise, but collectively no one believed in them. And
the idea of overachieving with guys who are united and
guys who get along, and guys that play great football together.
Think about Think about the juxtaposition of the Philadelphia Eagles
(01:45:14):
and how they became the best team in football even
without their quarterback and all these big name, big personality
guys who got run out of their last stop. It
strikes me as one or two too many. And this
is somebody who really appreciates the skill and talent of
Odell Beckham Jr. When right, when healthy, he's as electric
(01:45:35):
as anybody in the league of that position. I think
the same can be said for in Dominan Sue. I
think the same can be said in in their Prime.
For Marcus Peters to leave seems to be past his prime,
but still as the wherewithal the football intelligence and frankly
the moxie of a guy who can make plays even
(01:45:57):
though maybe his um, maybe his skill set has diminished them.
But you just start bringing in dudes, you go talent
over character, and that isn't that It isn't generally a
plan that works. Tell me where that's worked. Case in point,
the Pittsburgh Steelers, look at the eagles they have on
(01:46:18):
the offensive side of the ball, lost at home to
the Jacksonville Jaguars. Let's get you Dann Buyer for an update.
What's up? Dan? News from the NBA dog Mark L
Folts back for the Sixers. Tonight's played just four games
so far this season, but the first overall pick has
been cleared to return from his shoulder injury to take
on the Denver Nuggets. Sixers playing some good basketball heading
(01:46:41):
into the month of April, and of course, looking ahead
to the NBA playoffs. Some news are Major League Baseball
Yankees for first basement, Gregg Bird's gonna miss six eight
weeks of action. He's gonna need ankle surgery. Well. Former
Indians and White Sox lugger Albert Bell was arrested Saturday
in Arizona on multiple accounts of indecent exposure. Do you
I an extreme d u y You just mentioned it
(01:47:03):
a bit earlier Eagles defensive and Michael Bennett turning himself
into Houston police after he was indicted on a felony
account of injury to the elderly. Cowboys vice president Steven
Jones says the team needs to talk to des Bryant
about his contract Brian to twelve and a half million
dollars in eighteen. Team wants him to take a paid got.
Terence Williams is gonna miss offseason workouts for the Cowboys
because of a broken foot, but Stephen Jones did say
(01:47:25):
that Jason Witten Doug will be back for the eighteen season,
is sixteenth in the National Football League. In the audition
for some TV TV jobs, Yeah, he may have. That
sounds it sounds familiar. I can't I believe the auditioned
for some TV jobs. So either he didn't get them
or he's not really gonna walk away from it because
he wants to go back and play for another year. Uh.
(01:47:48):
Jason wins ay, I've only hang out with him twice.
He is a great dude. He is one of those
man that's a great dude. But everybody likes their their
cowboy post career to be on their television set. H
When you're dealing with life's ups and downs, it helps
to know the ins and outs of insurance. Let farmers
(01:48:10):
share with you practical knowledge gained from more than ninety
years of experience. We know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers. Maybe
it's different because it's the spurs. Maybe it's different because
I can't recall Tony Parker saying anything interesting. Maybe it's
(01:48:31):
because it's a player calling out another player for I
don't know if you caught faking injury or not reacting
well to rehab. Take a listen to Tony Parker on
Friday talking about his teammate his recovery and how it
is dissimilar to the injury that he suffered. I've been
through it. It was a rehab from me two for
(01:48:53):
eight months, you know, so same kind of injury. My
mind was a hundred times worse, but the same kind
of injury and just try to stay positive. So when
I did my injury, forty eight hours I was in surgery.
I didn't take like two weeks and go h the
options and stuff like that. For me, it was a
no brainer because I felt like we have the best
amnical team in the world. So look, he's calling out
(01:49:14):
Kawhi Leonard for first year, using his own people for surgery,
using his own people for rehab, and for disagreeing. And
he said Kawhi Leonard obviously is softer than he is
because well, his injury was a hundred times worse. Right,
Keep in minds the same Tony Parker that is now
coming off the bench, Tony Parker, who's uh, this is
(01:49:37):
a career low in minutes. He came back from that injury.
He's only shooting from three point range. He's a shell
of the player he used to be now. In addition,
and I know he's old. I understand that he's old,
and that's a portion of the reason that they're slippage.
He's thirty five years old. Is it possible that Tony
Parker also came back to sion? Is it possible? Is
(01:50:01):
it possible that he should have spent more time rehabbing
or maybe this first. It's also possible that he's just
not that good anymore, and that he's older and he's
coming off an injury, and everybody's performance will slip at
some point, also possible. But for a guy who's going
through a career worst season, lowest number of minutes, lowest
(01:50:22):
number of points, lowest percentage from field goal range, lowest
percent a second, lowest field goal range, lowest from three
point range, if he has assists per game, All of
these things for a guy who's going through, by all accounts,
the worst season as a pro. He has handled it
like a champ in terms of coming off the bench
(01:50:43):
and playing so a few minutes, but his play hasn't
demanded that he plays anymore anyway, Dude, how dare you
call out Kawhi Leonard right like? There are things that
you don't you don't talk about other guys. You can
think it, you can feel it. You might even say
it to your wife at home, but you don't say
(01:51:05):
it right You just don't say it, Or if you're
gonna say it to him, you say it to him
in a private setting, one on one setting, like, hey man,
I went through the same injury you did. I thought
mine was worse than yours. What's going on? But to
say it in a public statement like that, my injury
(01:51:26):
was a hundred times worse. I'm back playing. He's not
back playing. I went and got surgery right right away.
He waited two weeks. You're you're saying that he's difficult.
You're saying that he's soft. You're saying that he's either
faking injury or not built willing to pay through pain.
(01:51:49):
And this is the opposite of what you're what you're
supposed to do is called self deprecation, right, lower yourself
so that other people go like, no, Tony, you're great.
Like all Tony Parker had to say was, Hey, I
went through the same injury. It's really hard to come
back from. Look, and I'm probably the last guy to
ask because I'm having a career worse in terms of
(01:52:09):
three point shooting. And I'm only coming out of the
bench now where I was starting last year. He started
every game that he played last year. This year, he's
earned a right to come out the bench. But I
don't know. I work with our doctors and I thought
they were great. That's all I can That's all I
can convey to Kauai if he needs and I've told
anything he needs an help. You know, I was fortunate
to come back in eight months. He struggled to come back,
(01:52:31):
But to say my injury was a hundred times worse.
To point out that he didn't wait. Forty eight hours
later he was in surgery. And to say I didn't
think twice about using our own doctors. All of that
is calling out Kawhi Leonard. And who does that. Tony
Parker does that. The Spurs do that. And for a
(01:52:52):
team that has preached its culture is better than other
rosters in the NBA, I think that's a terrible depiction
of their culture. Terrible. Keep your engine light and check
with the free Auto Zone fixed Finders service that helps
your troubleshoot the problem. Let's let's get you what you
need getting the zone. Auto Zone. One of the NFL's
(01:53:13):
top quarterbacks is finally making his return. I'll tell you
about it next. Car shopping can be confusing with terms
like dealer price, list price, an invoice price. True Car
shows what other people paid for the car you want,
so you can recognize a good price when you're ready
to buy a new or used car. Visit True Car
and they enjoy more confident car buying experience. Funky c
(01:53:40):
Top tweets me, dog, I'm a Spurs fan, but I
agree with you. But remember, Tony Parker is the same
guy who slept with the teammate's wife. Important distinction. Punky
c top Uh Tony Parker is the same guy who
allegedly slept with a former teammate's wife. Let's just make
sure we make the distinction. But yeah, guessing he and
(01:54:03):
Brent berry Uh don't exchange holiday cards. Just a guess.
You gotta get to Hooters trying to do smoke wings,
the whole new way to crave wings with all the
taste and half the calories. You can eat twice as
many Hooters buyer what he got, Doug, We got a bunch.
(01:54:25):
I want to start off with a story that we
touched on a little bit earlier because some sad news
and shocking news from the G League. G League players
Zeke Upshaw, who played collegiately at Illinois State and Hofstra
now remember the Grand Rapids Drive, died today after he
collapsed on the court during a game last night. So
a a sad and scary situation in the G League,
(01:54:46):
really really sad. I mean, I've obviously Hank Galla's was
you know before this, It was probably the last time
I can remember that happening in a major basketball game.
And I saw this happen when I was twelve years old.
Happened with a thirteen year old friend of mine, Don
clark Off. Awful stuff. Uh, just sad. You know, this
time of year, when some of these ge League kids
are getting second ten day call ups and getting long
(01:55:09):
term deals, to have this happen is is awful. Warriors
there coach Steve Kurt told The Athletic that the Warriors
can beat anybody, even without Steph Curry. Curse said over
the weekend that Curry's gonna miss the first run of
the playoffs with his m C outlet injury, but apparently
not worried. I mean, what are you supposed to say,
right what you're suppos to say, Oh, we're screwed. On
(01:55:31):
the other hand, they still have I think two superstars
and they still have a very good team around him.
Do I think they can win playoff games? Yeah? I
don't think they can beat the Houston Rockets. Without them,
I think they can win. Remember they were still competing
well with the Portland Trailblazers the year before they even
got Kevin Durant. When Steph Curry was out, Stephen Curry
(01:55:52):
came back, they won the series. He had forty I
think his first game back, adding Kevin Durant, there's no
reason they can't compete with and beat most teams in
the NBA. I don't think they can beat the Rockets
for that. I get your point about the opposite thing,
like is he's supposed to say they're lose, they're gonna lose.
But I think it is interesting that this is This
isn't a comment. I guess that we would hear from that.
(01:56:13):
I would expect to hear from Steve Kerr, just because
it doesn't seem that conversation ever comes out when talking
about the Warriors. You know, you know what. I'm sorry
thrown up by all the drops, No, I do. I
think I think there's an incredible amount of disrespect towards
especially courts to Kevin Durant. Kevin rand is either the
best or the second best player in the NBA, and
he's playing both both ends this season. He's been incredible.
(01:56:36):
They're better with Curry, but they're not crumbling without him. Jeez,
can I just gotta pause with some of those Johnny Flease,
just a second, thank you. Sixers guard Mark l Fault
is gonna return tonight from his shoulder injury, playing in
just four games so far this season, he's gonna come
off the bench. Is the Sixers take on the Nuggets? Yeah,
I think the big question is what's the jump shall
(01:56:57):
look like? Right? I mean, here was the guy who
was the number one point guard, number one guard taken
and he had a better finishing package than the rest
of the guards, and a guy who was an elite
shooter scorer, and obviously through shoulder problems, his shot appeared
to be broken. Let's see if it's fixed. You mentioned
this earlier. Jeff Goodman of ESPN reporting the UNBC and
(01:57:19):
coach Ryan Oldham has agreed to a new contract with
the school, modifying his current deal. Oldham reportedly talked with
Middle Tennessee, but it's gonna stay with the Retrievers. That's
I think good news obviously for the Retrievers, but also
for college basketball. Is uh, you know some of the
m hm um, some of the narrative is, you know,
(01:57:40):
coaches succeed, then they leave. Now this is a and
remember UNBC lost to Albany by forty. They were a
great team all year long, but they did have a
school record and wins. They were a feel good story.
Let's also not kid ourselves. They didn't go on to run.
They won one game. The New York Daily News says
the Rams have reached out to the Giant. It's about
acquiring Odell Beckham Jr. With the Giants wanting a first
(01:58:02):
round pick and more for the wide receiver. I know
a topic you've talked a lot about today. Uh. I
mean I'd be intrigued to see if it works immediately
and if it works long term. I think immediately obviously
they would see dividends because right now Cooper cups their
best wide receiver. You put Odell Beckham Jr. Out there
with Cooper Cup and with Robert Woods and all. I mean,
you just got dudes to throw too for days. I
(01:58:24):
am interested in all of those egos and personalities and
how they would fit in in one locker room in
l A. Uh. And if if you know Jared gott
throws interception, how he handles getting stared at, getting the
getting the stint guy from O b J, We'll see.
Colts owner Jim Mercy says he is optimistic that quarterback
(01:58:44):
Andrew Luck has turned the corner in his rehab from
his shoulder injury. Optimistic doesn't mean he's sure optimistic means uh.
Coming up a week from wednes Day, we will finally
get this. See the brand new uniforms of the Tennessee Titans.
A and unveiling of the Titans uniforms coming up April
(01:59:06):
fourth will be the night that they are released. And
Doug the Titans ownership Amy Adams Strunk, has said that
they expect something big and that fans should expect something
big with that Titan sort of feel. And I'm just
wondering if we're gonna see kind of like, you know,
like a Boise stated that full bronco on their helmet.
(01:59:29):
I'm wondering if that is now coming to the NFL,
if that's gonna be a new look for the Tennessee Times,
with a big, big logo on their helmet. Well, I
I when I knew this topic was coming up. I
searched and I searched and I searched, and I couldn't find.
I don't like white helmets. White helmet teams don't traditionally
do well. I think they'll do away with a white helmet.
Um So, I have no idea what it look like,
(01:59:51):
but I do. I think it'll be bold. I think
it'll be you know it's one of those things. Nike's
getting ahold of it with all those uniforms. It'll be something.
But remember when the when the Broncos, for is, came
out with what's now been their old, their long time uniform,
right the blue at the orange down the side. Those
were supposed to be like arena ly uniforms, and now
they've kind of become the norm as opposed to the
exception the Titans uniforms never caught on. I think it
(02:00:12):
will actually be more traditional. Just the helmets will be bold. Yeah.
And what was amazing about those Broncos uniforms was the
Navy ones were their first, were the first ones that
you know, the Seahawks were all Navy. Well, the Broncos,
you know, had that sort of uniform in their set,
but their main uniform was Navy for so many years
with the new ones and then they went back to
Now their orange was the ultimate. Yeah, now they flip
(02:00:33):
flopped them. Um. Finally, let's wrap up with this. Former
Indians and White Sox slugger Albert Bell arrested Saturday in
Arizona on multiple accounts of indecent exposure d u Y
and extreme d u Y. These are the details. According
to Bell, was released from jail after allegedly urinating in
a stadium parking lot. What happened was another person who
(02:00:55):
was in that parking lot yelled at him for urinating.
Belvin turned around mid motion, mid act, and there was
there were a few miners in the area and a
few adults, and that's why he is nailed with those charges.
But he was peeing at a parking lot. It's not acceptable,
m Um, I actually can see that. I mean, I
(02:01:17):
don't know what he was doing in the parking lot,
but I think some of this is explainable. BA get
out there and pressed. That was the press, right, Like
I mean, sometimes peeing in public places is understood. You're
you're stuck somewhere, you can't get to the bathroom, the
bathroom doors locked, and you go into a corner and
you try and hide, and you just go, I I
just I gotta go. Problem is he's drunk. Was he
(02:01:38):
behind the wheel driving? You know? How did he get there?
Why was he there? There's obviously some more parts of
the details, but like I'll be the first to tell
you that I don't think always peeing in public is
always a horrible, horrible thing right, I'm not the only
I'm not the only. I'm a I mean, like, we're
not so prude that you're like, no, you have to
(02:02:00):
always go. Like you're driving on an interstate, you gotta
go really bad. You pull over the side of the road,
you hide behind the bushes, you go bind trees or
nobody can see you, and you pee. You're on the
whole fourteen. You gotta go really really bad. You go
into the rough behind a tree and you pee. It's
different if you want everybody to see Mr Happy and
you're spelling things out on the cement and you're behind
(02:02:22):
the wheel with the d U I, and there's there's
a there's a difference. Port Mooser joins us. Tomorrow, we'll
ask him about the final four, as will we bill
self the Hall of Fame Kansas head Coaches back where
he last won a national championship. That's tomorrow on The
Dug Got Lip Show.
