Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Thread is a new hit podcast from Ozzi Media
that explores history surprising connections in order to discover how
one thing leads to another, like how movie moguls in
early Hollywood helped spark the me Too movement. Today, get
it on I Heart Radio or wherever you listen. You're
listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America, Doug
(00:21):
Godlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from the sunny,
not humid, not really hot, utter perfection. City of Angels,
Home of the Dawyer's, the Halos, Lebron Clippers, sc U
(00:42):
c l A two soccer teams, a hockey team. Yes,
partridge in a peara tree. It ain't bragging if it's true,
that's what they say. Um Man, how about Max Muncie
hitting uh his home run? Will we will talk some
based a little bit of baseball here today. What I
want to start with, though, is the continuing reaction to
(01:05):
a couple of the free agent signings, most notably Paul
George and Boogie Cousins, and of course Lebron James and
then the whale that's out there in Kawhi Leonard. There's
a report that the Spurs, the Spurs want Kyle Kuzma,
they want Brandon ingram they want Josh Hart, and they
(01:29):
want the right to swap a couple of first round picks.
And John Ramos asked me before the show, He's like,
what's a swap? It's a great question. If you remember
the Nets Celtics trade, and that the Celtics didn't have.
They traded three for for three first round picks, but
they also traded for the right to swap picks. The
reason for that is by rule in the NBA, you
can't trade first round picks in back to back years.
(01:52):
But what you can do is you can trade the
right to swap. In other words, it's like when you
go to school and there's a there's a kid, it
always has a better lunch than you, Right, his mom
packs Oreos and your mom did like fig Newton's, And
you're like, man, just once I want Oreos? Well what if?
Just what if in this imaginary scenario, whenever you wanted,
(02:14):
you could take his Oreos and all you had to
do was give me your Fig Newton's. That's essentially what
a swap is. You know, because you can't trade pick
first round picks in back to back years, you can
trade the right to swap first round picks, so that if,
for example, uh the Lakers eventually had a better first
round pick than the Spurs, they would retain the right
to swap picks during those those given years. And to me,
(02:38):
it's it's listen. If you're a Spurs fan boy, that
sounds great. You're puffing out your chest ner. Yeah you
want Kauai, Fine, you're gonna overpay. And I don't may
I don't blame I don't blame the Spurs for being upset.
I don't blame them. They've paid, They've paid Kauai let
(03:00):
commensurate with his contract. They've tried to invest in him
with you know, they built the offense around and built
the team around him, and of course their training staff
tried to help him rehab from the injury. I do
blame them for some of the comments that came out,
most notably Tony Parker saying my injury was a hundred
times worse. When Tony Parker says it, it's essentially coming
from the mouth of Gregg Popovich. You're calling your best
(03:22):
players soft. You're questioning his heart, is desired to play
for the organization, his desire to win, and live up
to his contract. That's what you're doing. So I I
don't blame the Spurs for wanting above what would be
market value. This is the way that negotiations work. It's
the way that negotiations work for any great player, for
(03:44):
any great talent. That's how it works in my business.
You don't ask for what you want. You ask for
what you want. You know, you don't ask for X.
You asked for two X or at least X plus two.
Of course you do. You have the and usually the
place in which you work will try and low ball
(04:06):
you without making you feel like you're low bald. Right,
that's the That's that's the beauty to it. What's the
what's the least I can offer without having them walk
away from the table upset. But what the Spurs are doing,
and the Spurs are a great organization. They have a
tremendous uh, tremendous ownership group, like at all the facilities
(04:28):
you want, great cost of living, no state income tax,
and incredible GM. They do it even this year in
their drafting. I didn't love Lonnie Walker from Miami. He's
a combo guard that doesn't pass and the only time
he dribbles into a shot, and there were some there
were some health some some health issues that caused him
(04:50):
to drop a little bit in the draft. But to
get a guy who is a a only a freshman
at Miami, a top ten talent and have the chance
to grow him and help him in al at eighteen
in the first round, it's classic Spurs. In the second round,
they got a kid, Chimezi met To at a USC
He's gonna make the team. He can play stretch four
(05:10):
at five, very very good shop blocker, good athlete who
can roll the rim, and Duncan can also shoot the
college three. He'll stretch out to the pro three. He'll
be a tenure NBA pro if he continues to improve
his shooting. He's got good feel, smart kid, college graduate
and three years met To in the second round Steel
The Spurs draft well. The Spurs support their players well.
(05:30):
The Spurs have evolved in terms of their offense. They
don't run the same stuff they ran when they last
won a championship, and they certainly don't run when run
what they ran when they won championships with David Robinson
and Tim Duncan. It's a system, but one that like
the Patriots evolves. They're pragmatic, they fit it to their personnel.
There's there's no better place, no better place in the
(05:53):
NBA for foreign players to come. It's a place to
which players can extend their career. Pau Gasol perfect example
of that. But one thing they're not great at is
they're not great in dealing with this type of adversity.
They're not great in dealing with a player who doesn't
(06:13):
buy in who they actually need. It's not that they
haven't had guys not buy in and leave or had
to cut or trade it away or just cut or
just let their contract expire. That's not the case. They've
had that before. But they've never had a star player
who wasn't all in and programmed and almost robotic in
his answers. Greg Popovic is the best. Tim Duncan is
(06:38):
the greatest power forward ever. Right, They're so programmed that
they'll say Tim Duncan didn't play power forward with the
exception of like five years in his NBA career, and
yet all of those guys like, no, no no, he's the
best power forward ever. Didn he play center for you guys, Yes,
but he's the best power forward ever. But but they don't.
(06:58):
They're not handling this well. And when I hear that
they want not one, but but the two best young prospects.
A matter of fact, you could even go with the
three of the four best young prospects on the Lakers.
That that's their ask. Kuzma Ingram heart picks, give him,
(07:19):
give them all to us, and then we'll give you
Kauai to me. That's that's what's called. They're gonna do
what's called chasing the market. All right. Look, you can
adjust the numbers based upon where you live. But this
is if you know anything about real estate, you know that,
for the most part, on every place in the country,
real estate is up, and real estate is based upon comps. Comps.
(07:44):
What'd your neighbor get for his house? You want to
get a little bit more per square foot, right, if
it's a hundred of square foot, you do the calculations.
That's what you want, five square foots a thousand of
square foot depending on your location. It's location, but the
location is what is and the value for that location
set based upon the comparable homes sold in your area.
(08:07):
And if we look at the comps from last year,
Kyrie Irving was under contract for two years two when
he was traded from the Calves. So remember it's not
a it's not a perfect comp but he was he
did have two years left on his contract. And what
what and what was he traded for? Kyrie Irving was
(08:31):
traded for Isaiah Thomas. And you may say, well that
he was an m VP candidate. Yeah, but he was
traded for Isaiah Thomas who had a bad hip and
couldn't play half of the season. He was traded for
Jay Crowder. He was traded for the nets first round pick,
(08:51):
and he was traded for the big guys. It that's
what he was traded for. So that's the camp. Although
keep in mind that Kyrie Irving had two years left
on his contract and though the Celtics weren't on the list,
there also wasn't one destination team. Kawhi Leonard's coming off
(09:14):
an injury, only played nine games last year, has one
year left on his deal, so his value should be
less than that of Kyrie Irving. That's the comparable listing,
and what the Spurs are doing is act asking for
a package far greater than what the Celtics received in
exchange for See what the Calves received in exchange for
(09:35):
Kyrie Irving. Now, look, there's a level of intelligence to it,
because the truth is that the Calves made a bad trade.
They gave away a top ten player in the NBA
for a broken down Isaiah Thomas who didn't fit in
with them and didn't really want to be there after
he wasn't welcome with open arms, didn't do good enough
background research there. Jay Crowder was a disappointment and the
(09:56):
and though they did get the NETS pick and end
up being the eighth pick in the NBA draft, it
was hard to calculate exactly what that pick would be
would be when the lottery end up playing out almost
a year later. That's a camp they want more than that.
But what they're gonna end up doing is called chasing
the market. Chasing the market, quite simply, is let's say
(10:18):
your neighbor sells his house for five dollars and you're like,
my house is on a better part of the street,
has a better lot. It's been redone. We're gonna ask
six fifty for our house and our neighbor got just
over five, and the rest of the neighborhoods like, yo, dude,
I hope you get it. But man, that's really really high.
And what you're thinking in your mind is y'all listed
(10:40):
for but I'm willing to take five fifty or five
seventy five. And you do so in the summer, thinking, amen,
people moving the summer, this thing will sell. Everything is
selling in our neighborhood. All set a new mark. I'll
set a new mark. And what happens You get to
(11:02):
the fall, kids get into school, nobody's moving, and all
of a sudden, now your house has been sitting for
over a hundred and twenty days. And you either take
it off the market, or you lower the price, or
you take those looks. You you start chasing after low
ball offers that came in at five or five five,
that you poopoo, that you blew off, and now those
offers instead are four. And because your timing is off,
(11:29):
and because you've already set in emotion that you're gonna
buy another house, you end up taking an inferior deal.
That's why I think the Spurs are doing. They're over asking,
which is what you're within your right to do. And
I'm sure they're willing to settle for some sort of
happy ground, but the fact is they're running the risk
of chasing the market because they set the price too
(11:51):
high too early. Once the kids get back in school,
or you have training camp and Kauai doesn't want to
be there and so he doesn't show up. Now you've
lost any sort of leverage in your trading game, and
you end up getting below market value instead of above
market value. It's going to be fascinating to see what
(12:16):
Kauai Leonard goes for. I understand that the Spurs are
sitting there saying, hey, the Kyrie trade wasn't a good
one for Cleveland, we should ask for more than they
got back in return. But the fact is Kawhi Leonard,
even if he's a better player than Kyrie Irving and
it's marginally better on defense, it's better on defense, not
(12:37):
better on offense. The fact is Kyrie is under contract
for two years, Kauai is under contract for one, and
unless it's the Lakers, it's not somewhere that he said
he's wont to be Give me your thoughts when you
get a chance at gottlieb shows the Twitter handle eight

for a great holiday celebration. Hopefully you're safe even if
you got those firecrackers, man, be really, really, really careful.
(13:18):
Coming up next, Julian Edelman's suspension was upheld and Jamis
Winston suspended for three games. Bucky Brooks joins us upcoming next.
How short should the leash be on Jamis Winston when
he returns in Tampa? Find out on the Doug Ot
Lip Show Fox Sports Radio. I would say, outside of
(13:40):
Will Smith or DJ Jags Jeff Summertime, this is in that,
in that conversation of hip hop songs which you can
throw on and no one's gonna go come on, man,
really all right, right, like honestly, if you throw on Um,
if you throw on Summertime, we'll get that for you liberated.
We'll play the hits here on Fox Sports Tray to

like sugar Hill Gang. I know his classic, but you
sound like the oldest person are you? You're just trying
too hard. Now when you're not trying too hard. Old
school and it still works. Speaking of old school and
still works, Bucky Brooks played in the league. He's old school,
but now he covers it for the NFL Network. You
(14:20):
can find him on Twitter at Bucky Brooks and he
and Daniel Jeremiah have an outstanding podcast called Move the Sticks,
which I would implore you to download. Of course, you
can watch it on TV Happy four the July to you, Bucky, Hey,
thanks so much for having um. How would you characterize
Jamis Winston's season last year? You know, the funny thing is, uh,
(14:43):
all of the off stuff distraction to recent distractions kind
of takes away from the fact that last year at
his best year camp proves in completion percentage, passing yards, Uh,
interception percentage went down on the field. It was the
best performance that he had and he did have some
bliss to showed up. Uh. Going after the official I
(15:04):
want to say in the Carolina game, the asterdam Daddy
head with Marshun Lattimore. Then you bring it to this
point where you have the incident with the uber driver
finally come into a head. Uh, he's got a crossroads
and the tam Bay Buccaneers and want to have to
make a decision on Jameis Weston and so he and
it is really what is a makeup break season for
(15:24):
him while it also being a makeup break situation for
the coach and the general manager. There's a lot of
pressure on him and the Buccaneers front office based on
how he performed this season. Yeah, no, look, it's it's
a it's a super fascinating deal there. I mean, Dirk
Cutter gets the job and I'm not sure Dirk Cutter
gets another job in the NFL. But because he was
the offensive coordinator, they don't want to change voices in
(15:45):
his ear, don't want to change verbage. They want to
keep that part the same. Of course, the off season
they've gone apart. They've gone about changing the defense, which
disappointed them. And he did ask someone in the Atlanta game,
and I think a Thursday night, he was bad. He
he had some moments to which, uh, some of some
of the flaws showed back up. So how do you think, Look,
he's got three games, he's gotta sit. Um, he's going
(16:06):
to be wearing a scarlet letter because of all of
the different little things and some of the and the
the um, the assumption that there's there's there's an issue
there with women. How difficult is it to win back
the locker room, to win the trust of an organization
when you have these things hovering over you, Well, the
(16:27):
only thing they're bringing supreme in the locker room is
performance and production. Jamis Winston right now has to put
all of his focus and energy into being very productive
and raising his lovement performance. That is the way that
he can change the locker room. All the talking, all
the words, all the pregame speeches, all that other stuff
means nothing if he doesn't perform. At the end of
(16:47):
the day. He's going to have to play like a
number one overall pick. And he has a challenge of
being able to do it when he's forced to sit
on the bench for three games. Because this is the
other deliminating drama that put on full What iFly Fitspatrid
gets them off to a tour on one or three?
And oh start When you're Dirk Curtin and you know
that your job is on the line, do you now
(17:09):
pull the hot hand to go back to Jamis? How
do you handle this situation going forward? Jamis Weston put
himself in Jeoffardy by not being available. It could be
very very interesting down in Tampa because their first three
games are very very difficult, and an on and three
start could be a death knill on the head coach
and the front office. When he returns, he has to
(17:30):
hit the ground running to play at a level. If not,
it could be the last that we see a Jamis
Weston and Tampa back. This is the Doug Outlives show
on Fox Sport. Trader Le's voice the bucket ducts from
the NFL Network. Let's get to Julian Edelman. He uh,
he challenges the suspension for p E d Use, He
loses that challenge. Um, give me your sense of Edelman
(17:52):
and what what we don me expect. Remember, he's he's
coming off of a devastating injury. He's into his thirties.
But he was the off a target of Brady going
back two years ago. One of the reasons was Gronk
was heard a bunch that year. Um, they've made a
bunch of changes to their wide receiving corps. What's your
sense of what Edelman Edelman's role will be like when
he returns. Oh, he's got a big part of their offense.
(18:15):
He's still a key figure. He is a guy that
Tom Brady allies on in key situations. It's eighty seven
or its number eleven, Julian Edelman Steel will play you
big well in this offense. What he does, he doesn't
necessarily require him to come back a fast and more
explosive version of himself. He just has to be what
he was. He's quick, he did a great job of
(18:35):
creating separation. I believe he's still going to be a
key contributor on this offense. Yes, he had more weapons.
They added and upgraded their running back room. They can
do some things in the backs of the backfield, but
at the end of the day, their passing name is
eighty seven and on their eleven. In that order, Edelman
will continue to be a guy that he kind of
leaned on when he gets down to that cut of time.
(18:57):
I'm I'm fascinated by the Dallas Cowboys. Um first, as
is still unsigned. He's still kind of sitting out there
and I think, you know, trying to find trying to
find a role for him. Can he evolve, Can he
be more of a possession wide receiver? I mean, you know, look,
he was, he was targeted over a hundred and thirty
times last year. He just couldn't catch the football. Wasn't
that they weren't trying to throw to him? So it
(19:20):
feels like, you, now, Blake Jarwin's there, they lose their
tight end. They loser they they cut their number one
wide receiver. H Blake Jarwin can catch, but he does
not have the experience of you know, of the guy
of Jason Witten, who he's who he's replacing. And then
it feels almost like that they're trying to win by committee.
You know, I know, Alan Hearns's listed as the number
(19:41):
one wide receiver and he's had he's had some moments.
What what are your thoughts on the level of weaponry
that the Dallas Cowboys are gonna throw out there in
in comparison to uh years in the past, or maybe
even two years ago in the past when Dak Prescott
had his come on the senior year. Oh um, Doug,
this is a real interesting thing. And I said this,
(20:03):
and I said it kind of on our podcast that
Dak Prescott has an opportunity to do some Tom Blady
like stuff, meaning that Dak Flescott on record when you
look at the stats. Dak Prescott is a much better
quarterback when he targets eight different receivers in a game.
When he has seven or fewer, his numbers are draftedly different.
(20:24):
I think he has an eight and eight record uh
by comparison, and he has eight or more different targets,
he's fourteen and two. He is a guy that is
a pass first point guard. Guy has opened, they get
the ball, they make the shot. This team now has
removed the distraction of having the force feed. There's one
and even though Jason Witten was a nice security blanket,
(20:44):
he was a shill of what he was throughing his prime.
What Dallas is banking on is that Dak Flesscott is
going to be so good just running the system, finding
the open guy and letting the guy go, letting the
ball go to the first guy that's open. That is
going to work with them. Because remember their offense, the
focal point is really Ezek Elliott. Every defense has to
(21:06):
come in thinking intent on stopping Zeke Elliott. Eight man
bosses take that away. So as long as the running
back is there behind him, Jak Prescott is going to
be fine because it'll be single coverage on the outside
those guys have to win. But he is just going
to play ball, and as I've heard you say in
describing basketball, the ball will find the open man. He
(21:27):
just has to be the distributed. I think he's gonna
be fine to ship. It's gonna be fascinating to see. Um.
I'm bullish on the Chargers, obviously, living in southern California,
it's easy to be. Some are more bullish on the
Rams who went out and they added big name free
agents or they made some big name moves. But those
are guys that have, uh, they have they carry some
baggage with them. Of course, the Chargers lost Hunter Henry,
(21:49):
who is going to be their starting tight end. If
you could pick one of the two l A teams
that are most likely to have the better season, which
would it be Oho. That's a tough because I think
because at l A super goal, I think both of
those teams are really that good. Uh. If I had
to choose the two, I'm gonna say that l A Rams.
And part of the reason I'm gonna say the Rams,
I believe their defense could be something extraordinary. Uh. Aaron
(22:11):
Donald team and winning Dominican sue markets theaters teaming up
with a key to lead the holdovers from the defense
that they have. That defense could be a top five,
top six defense. Then when you look at their offense,
I just believe Jered Golf and Sean McVeigh will continue
to get better there continue to grow. Todd Gurley is terrific,
and then Adon Brand and Cook gives them a little
(22:32):
more pomp on offense. They play a much tougher schedule,
so their record may not be indicative of how good
they are, but I think this team is poised to
be a team that gets into the tournament and makes
their run. And I'm saying that knowing that I think
the l A. Chargers are gonna be really, really, really good.
Their defense could also be a top five defense, and
(22:52):
then it's just a matter of can Philip Rivers can't
care of the ball, force feed the ball to Keenan
Allen and can they get another thousand yard season from
Melvin Gordon. I just think the Rams are a little
bit better than the Charges right now. It's gonna be
fascinating to watch the Giants. They go out and add
everyone's number one and were't running back on the board.
They've tried to uh retrofit their offensive line. They've changed
(23:14):
their front office, they've changed their head coach. Eli Manning
still ever present there, and they're trying to get as
much you know, the Lebron quote I think is great
juice from the Orange as possible. I don't know if
you've seen the schedule, and I hate being scheduled guy,
But the Jags are good. They open with the Jags
and they go to Dallas take on the Cowboys. They
go to Houston take on the Texans, and you know,
(23:34):
assuming to Shaun Watson's back, J J. Watts back, like
that doesn't look like a walk in the park. Saints
said a home and although the Saints aren't great on
the road, it's early in the year and that was
a really good Saints team that should be Uh, they
may settle back down. Then they go to the Panthers,
then the Eagles, then the Falcons. Like, dude, they got
a crazy schedule, and I I just I just thought, Hey,
(23:55):
hadn't Eli been washed up? I mean, he's just a
shell of the player he used to be. What's reasonable
expectations for the Giants. I think their offense is gonna
be really, really good. Part of my whole springs from
Ardell Beckham joy returning to the field. He's probably is
about a ten point difference when he plays versus when
he's not playing. And then I think having the running
(24:17):
back and stake Kwan bark he completes their offense. Yeah,
they made some upgrades to the offensive line, but sake
Kwan Barkley's presence, not necessarily as a runner, but as
a past cotch out of the backfield. We're making very,
very tough for teams to double team o'deal and take
away the west of the weapons. This offense should be better,
and I'm really banking on the play caller upgrading what
they've done in the past three or four years. I
(24:38):
believe fast Sham is one of the best play callers
in the game. Here'll find a way to take advantage
of the talent. But you're right, the schedule is challenging,
is difficult on paper. We'll see if those teams that
are on the schedule are as good as we expect
him to be. We have the Giants have a tough
road to home. Bucky, great stuff man. Have yourself a
very happy and safe Fourth July here in southern California
(25:01):
and thanks so much for joining us on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, that's a that's Bucky Brooks from the NFL
Network joining us on the Doug Gottlin Show. Paul, Paul
George is kind of living this alternate reality. I'll get
to that in a second, but first let's catch up
with Dan Buyer to me David Gascon and find out
(25:21):
what's what's trending David, Doug. A couple of things right
now in Major League Baseball. Yankees taking care of the
Braves right now. Five two in the seventh inning, Gian
Carlos Stanton sucked his twenty one homer on the season.
That affair Marlins on top of the race. Three zip.
Tigers have recaptured the lead. John Hicks is eighth homer
on the season. Nicholas Castellanos is fourteenth of the year.
Tigers choo Cubbies one and then earlier today to pitch
(25:44):
a swang on hit on a line at a right
center at base and it'scloting on the grass. HiT's coming
all the way into this carboarded New Years rounds three.
Harry comes and he scores on an RBI, doubled by
Jack D. Bradley Jr. And the Red Sox laid it
freed hafing Red Sox Radio Network. They had no problems
with the Nationals and the three nothing victory. Nationals are
(26:05):
now one game under five hundred this season at forty
two and forty three. A couple of side notes in
the NFL. Falcons have signed first round pick wide receiver
Calvin Really and free agent Amir Johnson is finalizing a
one year deal to return to Philadelphia's seventies six years.
That was reported by Adrian war Janalski at Wibledon and
Roger Federer want his sick around matchup in straight sets? Doug,
(26:26):
back to you, what was the Woad report again there, David,
I I apologize. It's a free agent Amir Johnson. He's
finishing up a one year deal to return to Philadelphia.
I think I like the idea of getting paid on
the fourth July. You know, you're like at you at
the party, They're like, we're staying in Philadelphia. Drinks on
me that it's that one. And also I don't know
(26:48):
if you saw today or earlier. On Twitter, Jason Pierre
Paul had twittered out photos of his fingers basically saying like, hey,
make sure what you're doing on the fourth July is smart. Listen.
I said, this show here like I co hosted the
Dan Patrick Show David With with Jason Smith, and I said, look.
As as a child, I learned the dangers of drug
use from the tragic death of Len Bias. As a
(27:11):
high school kid, I learned the dangers of unprotected sex
from Magic Johnson. And as an adult, I learned the
dangers of fireworks from Jason Pierre Paul like that there's
nothing wrong like, nothing wrong with that, No, not at all.
I mean that's a wake up call. It especially out
here in Los Angeles, for things can get a little
while it's in Orange County, l A. Or even down
(27:32):
in San Diego, people let loose quite a bit more,
I think. And uh yeah, those are a healthy reminder,
especially at top of the morning. Yeah, I don't know
if it's if it's wilder here, I mean, yes, you
can get the fireworks the M eight s and then
one thousands from Mexico, but most of the other stuff
is pretty tame. Um. I would look, I've been in
Oklahoma for for you know, out in the country. My
(27:53):
wife's from a small town called Drumwright, Oklahoma, and you've
got some dudes they are like, well, woman off duty,
you know, I'm a volunteer firefighter, you know, like and
so they'll set like these big huge fireworks out in
some pasture. But you know, like, look they're firemen. They
can put out the fire. But they are also putting
out fires occasionally that they start. And we're all dudes,
(28:13):
we're all like, just blows some stuff up. And then
you get alcohol involving kids nearby, and um, I've I've
seen I've seen some things go go awry. Oh yeah,
no doubt. I was kind of referring to. I mean,
you know the city is like Wilmington's carson Um even
like Watts Compton, like those areas. Why you gotta pick
out Why you gotta pick out Compton and Carson because
(28:34):
I got family that lives there. So you got could
of sex and get closed off and then all of
a sudden, you got riulettes and sirens coming your way
like five ten minutes later, because there's smoke everywhere. So
no question, no question, And dudes pick out that they
or they'll they'll get the piccolo PiZZ and they'll peel
off the outside label and you know they they'll create
other like, yeah, I don't really think this is the
(28:54):
time to Jerry Riga a firecracker. Dude, this is probably
not the hold your hand to less second and then
throwing the ear to drawesome. It's like, that's not the
greatest idea in the world. David gascon our resident fireworks,
a resident um Smokey the Bear. Only you can prevent
forest fires. We all kind of live in an alternate reality, right,
(29:20):
Like it's very hard to just be like, oh, you know,
I'm actually in a ton of debt. I'm not really
all that good looking. Women don't like me. I'm a
little bit too attached to my mom, right. I think
some of you guys are listening to this and you're
listening to sports radio on fourth July. I'm glad you are.
We got some good updates, some sports and we'll we'll
we'll keep it light for you. But from that guy
(29:42):
to rich guy, everyone kind of lives in their own
form of reality. But man, I think Paul George, I
just I under I understand that he likes Oklahoma City.
As I said, my wife, mine laws are from there,
I went to school there, I have great relationship hips there.
If there was a place, you know, the three places
(30:03):
I can live on this earth and feel comfortable, uh,
Southern California, more specifically Orange County, UM Connecticut. There's two
different spots Connecticut where I lived working at CBS and ESPN.
I'm really comfortable there. And then Oklahoma is like a
second home to me. So I get how easy things
can be. The heat doesn't bother me, It just doesn't.
(30:24):
I like. I like some of the kind of country attitude.
If you he likes to fish, you can go find
good fishing holes. People are really nice, really warm, they
really support the thunder. Everybody's kind of you know, hey,
we all got to be pulled in this direction. But
but it is odd that a guy who um napalmed
the Indiana Pacers a year early. Remember he a year
(30:47):
early said I want to go to l a. He
didn't wait till last second. It was a year early
openly opined to go to the Lakers. Not only does
he now now he did he decide, Hey, I I
want to stay in Oklahoma City. But he never had
a meeting or a conversation with Magic, with Rob Polinka,
with anybody. He just said, this is what I want
(31:09):
to do. And so there is a level of this
to which I'm like, you know, I've been in situations before.
What I've screwed with Happy? I'm happy, but I was
looking for more. I'm a more guy, one more, one
more or more um and so I respect that. Don't
screw with Happy. Everyone can say it, very few can
(31:32):
do it. If that's what this is about. Fine, But
he didn't call the Lakers. He didn't have a sit
down with him. He wasn't even really a free agent, right,
Like you fight your entire career just for the chance
to hear about the other opportunities. And if Paul George
(31:52):
is a good player, not a perennial All Star, but
an All star. He was on Team USA. Of course
that's when he broke his leg. He's a damn good player.
But he had a three part series that chronicled his
free agency. And take a listen to what he said
in the final episode about Los Angeles. It's been very stressful.
(32:13):
This is not an easy decision. Appreciate Laker Nation for
wanted me to come back home, wanted me to play
in front of him. I wanted to come here a
year ago prior to go into Okay, see, unfortunately he
wasn't traded to Lakers. Lakers didn't grab me. I was
traded to Oklahoma, and that has been a beautiful thing
(32:36):
for me. He's like, look, you know, I want to
go to Lakers. They didn't trade for me, and I
end up, you know, falling in love with Oklahoma. That's great.
But this idea that Laker Nation wanted me to play
for them, Like, I hate to be that guy. But
you're like, I don't know, six seven eighth in line,
(32:58):
like Lebron has you know, he has two homes, but
and he spends a little bit of time there. Obviously,
Lebron has been the apple of anybody's eyes. Russell Westbrook
DeMar De Rosen were especially Russell Westbrook were thought to
be um more even more prominent in terms of the
the affection of Laker Nation, Like I go like Laker
(33:22):
fans were like, oh you want to come here? Cool?
Oh you're from here? Yeah? I think I knew that.
Like Palm dale go one an ever close Enough went
to President Stay close Enough. I just he's living in
an alternate reality where he thinks that the Lakers or
Laker Nation desperately opined for him. He lives in that
(33:44):
same reality to which he thinks he went through free agency.
Oh yeah, I went through free agency. It was very difficult.
What do you mean it's very difficult. You didn't have
one meeting with another team. He never sat and looked
Magic Johnson the eye. You didn't wait and see what
Lebron was doing. You didn't talk to Miami or Philadelphia. Uh,
you didn't talk to any of these two. I'm sure
there would have been a surprise team. Maybe the Houston
(34:06):
Rockets would have come after you. Plenty of options out there,
in ways in which are creative ways in which a
deal could have been done. But this idea that the
Lake Laker nation wanted him. I was dying for him,
Like yeah, okay, like your nation the Lakers. Laker fans
(34:27):
have been wandering in the desert looking for an oasis,
and Paul George looked like you could get a good
sip of water. It's not like you're a lake like
Lebron James, or even a running stream like Russell Westbrooker,
DeMar de Rosen. You're just upon there where we were.
You could have filled up. This is what happens, though,
when you don't actually take the cloak off and get
(34:51):
into the real world, get into the nitty gritty and
and live in this universe. He lived in the universe.
Paul George thinks he went through agency. No one else
on Earth does. Eight seven seven nine nine. Fox is
the phone number. UH if you the first time listening
to The Doug Gotlip Show, a man Nick Wright's gonna
(35:12):
join us next hour from First Things First, Chris Bruce
Art will join us at two twenty on the West,
five twenty on the East. We got some hot dog
eating contests. Talk about um Lebron supposedly asked, said Saballos
his blessing to wear twenty three. We gotta get to that.
More on the Spurs and Kauai, My thoughts on the
(35:32):
big fellow DeMarcus Cousins and what really led to the
Lakers passing on him and allowing him to go to
the Warriors, and why people are just handing the Larry
O'Brien trophy to the Warriors. But coming up next little
game we call real news or fake news. This is
the Doug Got Lip Show, the single greatest summertime song
in the history of music. As Will Smith, DJ Jazzy
(35:57):
jeff a groove trans phone. I mean, come on, Ramos.
The first time I heard this song, I was a
rising sophomore at Tustin High School. We were on our
way to a summer League game at Modern Day High School,
(36:19):
and uh, I was driving my mom's silver Honda Accord
with like, uh I probably four dudes in it, right,
guys like shoulder to shoulder. It was. It was kind
of stanky, right. We all had gotten some shots up
at the gym. We're all wearing like our our our
practiced U you know, reversible jerseys. And I heard that
jam and I cranked it up. And I've been a
(36:41):
fan ever since. And I don't know anybody who does
not like that that that that song just works. It
just works. You don't remember when the first time you
were when you saw that song. I was in college.
I don't remember exactly where I was, but I do
remember that song. I do know that Will Smith at
that time wasn't really uh getting a lot of love
as a rapper. I don't know that. I don't know, well,
(37:03):
I could, I could be wrong, but that was the
high high praise. But I think that song kind of
brought a little bit back for himself. Oh yeah, yeah,
it was in between like he had he had parents
just don't understand was his first big hit and that
was that was his second big hit. That was before
Welcome to Miami and some of the other stuff of course,
right yeah, big Willie style. Anyway, let's get to a game,
(37:29):
and now this is game time. Side on the Doug
gott leaps gas Man. David gascon joins us, what's the
game today? Compeak? We got real news fake news? All right,
let's get this thing gone, so, Doug, real news or
(37:50):
fake news? Story Number one is out of the NBA
free agent guard Raymond Felton has agreed on a one
year deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Contract Wise, it's
about two point four million dollars. That's according to ESPN. Now,
with this transaction, it's nothing special. But with Felton, though,
it puts the Thunder over the NBA threshold three hundred
(38:12):
million dollars. That means the responsible to pay a hundred
and hundred fifty million dollars in luxury tax this upcoming season. Doug,
is this say real news or fake news? That's real news.
It's real news. John Rom's what's wrong with you? Man
said real news. Maybe you had a firework below off
(38:32):
on one of his ads. That is real news, though, Yes,
in fact, a hundred fifty million dollars in luxury tax
this upcoming season with that small transaction for a point guard. Well,
I mean, like, look, ill, let's not put it all
on Raymond Felton. The big question for the Thunder is
what do they do with Carmelo Anthony. If they buy
out Carmelo Anthony, you'll save him ninety five million dollars
(38:54):
in overall tax savings plus salary savings. Or do you
keep him and just say, hey, what was it? Scared money?
Don't make money? Like that's a lot of money. Uh,
that's a that's that's a lot of money. Remember Clay
Bennett bought the team for three hundred million dollars. He's
gonna spen three hundred million dollars this year. That's unreal.
Story Number two, Are you a gamer at all? Or
(39:15):
does your does your kids play? I play I only
we only play sports games in my in my all right,
this is perfect for you. Then, highest rated rookies have
come out here in Madden nineteen, and the top one
is no surprise. It's quarterback Sam Donald. So let me
give the top five ratings of players as a rookie
class goes. Donald is rated as an eighty five. Offensive lineman.
(39:35):
Quentin Nelson at Notre Dame's an eighty three. He's a monster,
he should be higher. Sa Kwon Barkley is an eight two,
Baker Mayfield's an eighty one, and then Bradley Chub is
an eighty. So, Doug, is this top five list real
news or fake news? Let's go real news. This is
one is fake news. In fact, you hit it right
(39:56):
on the head, Doug. In fact, Quentin Nelson is the
top rank you have this entire Matten class. Jarnald isn't
even the top five. In fact, he's ready to number
seventy five out of this. This is Quinn Nelson's as
good a guards as college football is produced in a
long time. Andrew lux back, they've done a good job
of finally deciding to protect him. UH should be a
fun year in India. And that's that's game time coming
(40:21):
up next. H The Lakers turned down a chance at
DeMarcus Cousins. Good move or bad move, I'll tell you
next in the Dug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, What
Up stug gotleiep Show, Fox Sports Radio, Happy Fourth of July.
I hope you're safe. I hope you're grilling or queuing
or just hanging out when you're a lake, beach, mountain, desert,
(40:46):
or just at your crib. You just got in from
the parade. Welcome in. This is the dug Gotlap Show.
I know you're driving around to and fro your wife,
your girlfriend. They may be they may be nudging you.
Did turn on the top forty. They've got the best
gams of all the time. I don't worry. You can
listen to jams anytime. This is next two hours. You
can listen to sports talk radio and we can. We
(41:09):
can get you all lined up and uh Red Sox
taking on the Gnats. They're up three to nothing. The
Yankees Yankees on pace to hit more home runs than
any team in Major League Baseball. Some of it's the lineup,
some of it's the ball, some of it's the launch angle.
A good amount of it is that park is a joke.
That party. That park is an absolute joke. Um, we'll
(41:29):
talk a little baseball up coming. Nick Write's gonna join us.
Nick is one of these guys he works for Fox.
He's a co host of First Things First. That's the
TV show. You can you can actually hear it on
Sirius x M channel eighty three, same station where we
appear on. You can see it on Fox Sports one
sixty nine thirty a m. Eastern time. You can make
(41:50):
the the adjustments on wherever, whatever time zone you're in.
And Nick is like, he's he's almost bothered by this.
Marcus Cousins like it throws the axis of the league
off by DeMarcus Cousins signing with the Golden State Warriors,
Like somehow now like, oh, we had DeMarcus Cousins, Like
(42:12):
that's there is a such thing as addition by subtraction,
and there's a subtraction by addition. Now, the Golden State
Warriors won the championship, and history is gonna look back
and say, well, they swept and this is a seventy
three win Tina three years ago, a championship team of
a year before, and they swept in the champion and
(42:32):
they swept in the finals. History may play back the
j R. Smith doesn't know score or time. They'll probably
forget that George Hill actually had a free throw to
win the game before j R. Smith got the offensive rebound.
And the point is that whether it was Game one
or Game three, both were very much in the balance.
(42:54):
The series was more competitive than people give it credit. Historically.
The same can be true with the Houston Rock it's
having home court advantage and having the Warriors on the
ropes before Chris Paul got hurt. Now it should be
mentioned Andrego Dolla didn't play late in that series either,
but Chris Paul plays, we might have a completely different narrative.
(43:14):
So first credit the Warriors with um understanding that they're
gonna have to change some things. Javal McGee is gone.
I'd expect Swaggy p to be gone. They're gonna change
some of their bench, and of course you're bringing Boogie
cousins and it looks great people that, well, you got
an All Star there at five point three million dollars.
(43:36):
He's not gonna play until mid February. Theyorarily is probably
not in the March, which is it's fine for the
Warriors because they don't really play one until once you
get into April. But you can't. You don't the NBA
doesn't let you pro rate that thing and go like, well, listen,
we know it's five point three million dollars. But what
(43:57):
we'll do is, since you're only using it for the
last you know, month and a half of the season
or two months of the season, we'll let you use
the rest on somebody else early on. It's like, that's
not the way it works, you know, not the way
it works at all. But you've got people thrown out
there like uh like, like they've completely thrown the NBA
off its axis. A couple of challenges for Boogie Cousins,
(44:21):
most notably he's hurt coming off and to kill he's tendon.
But the other parts are the attitude, which has not
been good. He's only been a part of losing teams.
The Pelicans got better when he didn't play. And oh yeah,
by the way, and maybe this is the most important.
Even if he does play, even if he is healthy,
(44:42):
the fact is that they can't. That's no longer a
small ball team. This is a complete departure from how
the Warriors play. And while you while you'd be smart
to say, like, look, Andrew Bogan couldn't score if you
locked him the gym, he could not. But Andrew Bogan
was a really, really important part of their japionship team
and their seventy three win team. His injury is the
(45:04):
least discussed part of them collapsing up three to one.
Everyone talks about Draymond getting suspended, but Andrew Bogant got hurt.
He was their best screener. He's one of their best pastors,
if not their best passer, and he was a rim protector.
DeMarcus Cousins can kind of protect the him, but he
(45:24):
is a score, and though he can shoot threes, he
should set up shopping the low block, which is not
necessarily they use the low block. Golden State does as
a passer, not as a score. This is a departure
from how they play. And then you get to the
defensive end, where they're able to switch everything because Draymond
Greens are center and he can guard point guards. Guess
who can't DeMarcus Cousins. The fact is that DeMarcus Cousins
(45:48):
is worth five point three. Because nobody else was willing
to offer anything else, Pelicans pulled their mid season contract offer.
No one knows if he's truly healthy, and even if
he is healthy, will you buy into his system? I
think he'll buy into Golden State. But I don't. I'm
I'm not convinced it absolutely makes them better. There is
(46:09):
this thing called a addition by subtraction, but there's also subtraction.
By addition, you can add a piece to an already
good team and be the worst for it, because now
you've got one more guy that's thirsty, needs points, a
guy that needs to score in the low post when
you want him out of the way. A guy who
can't switch defensively, a guy who doesn't understand his role,
(46:30):
doesn't understand the culture of the team, doesn't care to
understand the culture of the role of his team or
the role because he's gonna be out there at the
end of the year anyway. If you think you just
show up and win a ring, um, then you've got
something else. I mean like that. That's just not the
way it works. The Warriors were pushed this last year.
(46:54):
I think Jordan Bell will be better. I think Looney's resigns,
they'll be better. Um. I guess Quinn Cook is their
backup point guard. They don't have a lot of depth
at the guard positions, and though they have three incredible
shot makers, Draymond Green's in a contract year. He's coming
off a terrible shooting season with a bad shoulder. Andre
(47:15):
Godala has been so banged up. He got hurt in
the playoffs, and he got hurt in the finals after
he sat out from being hurt. At some point his
body is starting to fail him. But we've we've done this.
We've done this weird thing where we've decided the Warriors
are are additioned by addition. When look at look at Cousins,
(47:38):
and the Lakers passed on him, I think twofold one
Mark Stein reported they needed a guy who's ready and
and ready before February. They need a guy to play
right away. It's it's just there. They got a different timeline.
They need to start, They need to make a run
and be in the playoffs and then two. There's no
doubt there's some cultural aspects to it in terms of
(48:00):
how he how he handles himself in the locker room
when he's not playing, if he's not starting, if he's
not getting the basketball. Everyone says, oh, man, I can
do it. I'll be a part of winning team. I
just want to be a part of the Lakers. I
want to be a part of you. And why I
want to be part of the Warriors. Everyone says they
can do it. But but Boogie Cousins is gonna start
(48:21):
get pulled, you know, five eight minutes into the game,
and there'll be a time to which he thinks he
belongs in the game and Steve Kurge does not, and
that's when will come to a head. So I think
the whole thing is fascinating, you know. And and if
you if you want to say, hey, um, if the
(48:45):
Lakers were really picking, if the Lakers were really picking
culture over talent or character over talent, then why they
get Land Stevenson? Then why they get re Genrondo? And
my answer would be simple that even though Rondo has
had issues in the past, he's at least one Land Stevenson.
(49:06):
Same thing. And oh yeah, by the way, you can
have one, you can have two. You start having three, four,
five guys with personality quirks that start getting that start
gathering together. And you don't want Cousins and Rondo, who
are together in New Orleans to be a divisive force
in the locker room having those clicks. You want to
(49:26):
break up those clicks. So I'm not getting ready to
hand the trophy to him. I like the move, but
I think a lot of that move was set up
by DeMarcus Cousins, and DeMarcus Cousins owning it and acting
as if, Hey, this was this was my call. What's that?
The definition of well, what is it? Uh? Invention is
(49:48):
that what was the Necessity is the mother of all invention. Yeah,
he's trying to reinvent himself. He's willing to take less money,
but part of it was there wasn't really anything out
on the table, So he's invented this false narrative that
everybody else. Uh that that he chose the Warriors over
everybody else when there was nobody else to choose from.
(50:09):
Necessity is the root of all invention. Nick Wright joins
the show up coming next, Um, he said something earlier
today which I disagree with. He said that Clay Thompson
could be the best shooter in NBA history and the
fifth most accomplished warrior. Huh. I'm struggling to see how
(50:31):
DeMarcus Cousins is more accomplished. We'll ask him up coming
next to The Doug Gotlip Show, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio. MHM, just another band from the Greatest City
on Earth. Nick Right calls the second greatest city on Earth. Home,
(50:55):
that's a New York City. I mentioned second greatest city
because look, it's it's really hot in the East coast.
Your listen to us in the Midwest. Uh, stay as
cool as you can. Put one of those towels on
your neck. Uh. Nick, Look, I know where you live
is great. It's beautiful. There's a lot of spirit to it,
it's multi cultural, there's a lot of history to it.
But days like today are the perfect example. There. There's
(51:17):
there's a good fifteen days a summer and probably twenty
days in winter. What's which New York City is uninhabitable?
That eliminates it from the possibility of being deemed the
greatest city on Earth, whereas Los Angeles there's not a
single day to which it's uninhabitable, putting it heads and
tails above any other city on Earth. Discuss Listen. I
try not to be nearly as jingoistic as you, Dug Gottlie,
(51:38):
so I will not call anything the greatest city on Earth,
because I haven't traveled nearly enough. However, if you want
to talk about in America, I agree with the rankings.
I would go Los Angeles one New York City too.
You can make a strong case for a New Orleans
three maybe in Miami. I hear great things about Seattle.
It's awful tasty up there for my taste, but people
seem to like it. I'm a eiver. We should execute
(52:01):
some type of trade involving both Dakota's, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho,
just for Vancouver and Toronto, but I don't think Canada
would do it. Great stuff from Nick, Right, Okay, what's you?
You seem almost morally opposed to DeMarcus Cousins as a warrior. Why? Yeah,
I think that is a great way to put it.
(52:22):
You know, I've talked about this on television for two days,
and morally opposed you might have just put your I
described myself as apoplectic about it yesterday. Morally opposed might
be the best way to put it. It's just wrong,
Like I it is amazing. We once upon a time
sports writers and sports commentators were almost all older gentlemen,
(52:45):
almost all white, and they always took the team's side
and banged on the ungrateful athlete. And that sucked. And
now we have somehow gone too far in the other direction,
where any athlete decision we can't criticize God forbid, I say,
I don't go to the movies just to see the acting.
(53:07):
Even if I appreciate the acting, I actually want it
not to be spoiled. I want a level of suspense
and the idea that with my sports, Oh, I'm not
a good basketball fan. If I just can't appreciate the
majesty of basketball, the Warriors will play Who cares that
they ruined the end of the movie. I disagree with
(53:28):
DeMarcus Cousins could picked the team that he will make
the smallest impact on. DeMarcus Cousins picked the team that
needs him the least. I don't need to like that.
I don't need to respect that. I don't need to
appreciate that. Um. Yeah, but there's a couple of things
(53:49):
that DeMarcus Cousins here. I mean, the fact is you
gotta go where you wanted, and we're led to believe
that just wasn't a lot of desire because of one,
you know, his reputation to his position. And three, maybe
most importantly, the fact that he can't get me ready
to play until maybe February, and he suffered an injury
(54:09):
to which we we don't know what he'll It's like
fifty fifty, whether or not he'll ever come back to
be anywhere near the same player that he was before
the injury, which is why he went from a guy
who was instantly going to get offered the max at
twelve o one am to a guy that was going
to have to parse lesser offers. But the New Orleans Pelicans,
(54:30):
post injury, offered him two years forty million dollars. The idea,
like his own timeline, is by five am July second,
he is calling the Warriors. I I reject on its
face that the mid the taxpayer mid level, was the
(54:51):
best he could do. He's spinning that because he doesn't
want it to be spun as ring chasing, which is
of course exactly it is, and that would be I mean, listen,
he can do whatever he wants, but I can feel
about it the way I want. This is the second
time the Warriors have done something in two years that
(55:11):
is wholly unprecedented in NBA history, and I don't like it.
It's not good for the league that I love so much,
it is not good for my favorite sport, and it
is not good for the vast majority of people that
are basketball fans. I don't have to be okay with it.
See I can actually talk you off this this this ledge.
You're you're operating under the assumption that it's addition by
(55:33):
addition when one I'm not sure if it's not subtraction
by addition. Because even if healthy, it causes the Warriors
to have to change the way they play. It just
it just does cause them to have just like just
like Kevin Durant has caused them to have to change
the way they play. And in some ways it makes them,
uh some ways it makes them a little bit easier
(55:54):
to handle um. But you know, they also are going
to have to play half the year without him. And
the NBA doesn't go like, hey, look, we know we
got a salary cap, but you got a guy who's
hurt and you signed him hurt, so we'll let you
fill in that salary cap for the first half of
the year. They're gonna signed him with the exception Like,
that's not he's not eating up any part of any
(56:14):
significant part of their salary cap. He is eating up
the part that could have gone to Land Stevenson, for example.
He's a hold. Like, listen, they the reason that this move.
You're right that they Theoretically it doesn't make them better,
but what it does do is gives them another insurance policy.
(56:35):
The only way anyone was beating the Warriors is if
a team that has amazing injury law got somehow all
of a sudden the injury bug bitten them and now
that is removed like that is I yeah, I I also,
but look they also what's what the Lakers strength is
when they go I mean the Lakers. The Warrior strength
is when they go Hampton five right, and they go
(56:57):
small ball and they spread you all out and they
become really they you can't play that way there they've
been when they've won championships, it's been based upon their defense.
Now a sudden, if he's healthy and if you play
him he's a traditional center, he and he's coming off
of an injury, that's gonna be a guy you can attack.
It changes them dramatically, Doug. They've been excellent defensively, but
(57:19):
when they've won championships the last two, it's because each
year they've had one of the ten greatest offenses statistically
in the history of the sport. The idea that they're
winning these championships like the O four Pistons did is
not true. They've won their championships because they have the
greatest offensive collection of talent arguably ever. Yes, the defense
(57:43):
has been quite good, but when you're talking about their
Hampton's five. The only team in these two years to
give them any trouble was the Rockets last year. The
Rockets best lineup last year had p J. Tucker playing center.
Now that's untenable now, instead that the Rockets dared them too.
(58:04):
All Right, you know what, we know Zaza or Javail
can dominate these matchups. But those guys are clumsy, inefficient players,
so we dare you to run your offense through them. Now,
the Warriors can CounterPunch that by running their offense through
the most skilled offensive big man in the league when
they want to. They won't need to often, but when
(58:24):
they want to. Like I oversaw it the Kevin Durant thing,
I watched and win seventy three games. I thought it
was the best team I'd ever seen. And I went
on television and radio and I said I wouldn't have
done it. I would have roll run it back because
I don't think you can get better. Ultimately, that was dumb.
What they were doing was replacing Harrison Barnes with the
(58:45):
second best player in the world. What they've done here
is replace Zaza and Javail with the best offensive big
man in the world, like the Of course this gives
them more ways to win. Of course this makes them
more dangerous. Nick writes our guests from first things first, Um,
how you dealing with the Lebron thing? With the fact
that he moved down And there's a bunch there for
(59:07):
people don't know. Nick lives in New York, watches every game,
and now of a sudden, You're sleep schedule is just
gonna be completely screwed. In addition to by the way,
you're you're one of my friends, but you're kind of
a bad friend. Not only did you text me the
day Lebron signs say goodbye to sleep, but you sit
(59:28):
that text at twelve a m. On a work night
as if you were trying to somehow like like haze
me getting me ready to say goodbye to sleep. You
and I still have beef about this, but so let's
let's start with Let's start with it, like, how are
you going for? And for people don't your call time
is four am, okay four m. How have you have
(59:51):
you have you devised a plan you can watch Lebron
James and still function as a talented TV personnel. I
mean for me, like, the the reality is there were
because Lebron's the one guy that you have. I want
to anyway, because I'm a bit of a Lebron historian,
(01:00:11):
but he's the one guy you have to watch every
single game. Like the the benefit I suppose to the
Warriors punting on the regular season last year is I
didn't have to watch every single Warriors game. I've watched
every single Lebron game. So he goes from eight or
nine week night West Coast games a year to what
fifty five or sixty? It ain't great for my health,
(01:00:33):
but I'll make it work. Like I'll just take long naps,
longer naps during the day those days, get to bed
if the game starts at ten, kid to bet around
twelve thirty, wake up at three thirty. Again, it's it's
not ideal, but as as good of a relationship as
Lebron and I have, I don't think he could do
that math in this decision. Okay, so what about the
(01:00:54):
team the decision and the team that's being put in
place around him. How are you handling the uh the
likelihood at this point that it will not end up
with the finals. UH finals appearance probably doesn't feel like
a conference finals appearance because he's surrounded by a bunch
of young dudes and they're like a year away from
adding another piece. Okay, well, I think they're gonna add
(01:01:16):
Kauai this year. But even adding Kawai this year, no
one's beating the Warriors and they're not changing the playoffs.
So Lebron's unprecedented, unbelievable streak of h State finals will
come to an end. But he knew that when he
made this decision. I mean the I think the lad Kauai.
I think the next year's free agency will be interesting. Again.
(01:01:37):
I hate that we are talking about free agency in
twenty nineteen in julyeen, but such is the life in
the Golden State Warriors, n b A. I mean, if
you're asking me, do I think Lebron James will win
another championship Corps careers over? Yes? Do I think it
will be this year? Absolutely not? Uh? What what's or
(01:02:00):
take on the spurs? I I said to start the show,
Nick right from first things first, joining us, I'm Doug
Gotlie Doug Gotli show, Fox Sports Radio. I think the
Spurs are going up chasing the market, you know, throwing
out there like, hey man, we want Ingram, we want Kuzma,
we want Heart, we want picks. Like that's great, okay,
but look at what the Celtics gave up to get Kyrie,
(01:02:21):
and Kyrie had two years left on his deal. That
that's really you know, that's the comparable trade. That's not
anywhere near what they're asking for the Lakers. I finally
kind of feel like they're asking for way too much
too soon, and they're gonna getting less than they ever, ever,
usually should have because they're gonna chase the market. Late.
Mark this down for me, because I I want to
(01:02:42):
see if I'm right on this. Here's what I'm guessing
they get for him. I think they get Ingram part
in two first, or Ingram Kuzma and one first. I
think that's what it is. I think it's they're not
getting they won't. I don't think I could be wrong.
I don't think the Lakers are given up Ingram and Kuzma.
I just I don't believe that you might be right. So,
(01:03:05):
but with Ingram, I would say one, I think Okay,
maybe ingram heart one first and one swap like one
opportunity to swap. I think I think it's gonna land
somewhere there your reality is and my partner Chris Carter
has done some really good reporting on this Listen, Kauai,
(01:03:28):
whether you like it or not, not you Doug Gottli,
but generic you. Kauai is kneecap to the Spurs in
this he he has made it crystal clear he's playing
his next game that he plays, he will be on
one of the teams in Los Angeles, and the Clippers
have no assets, So in an odd way, the Lakers
(01:03:51):
have the leverage here, like the Sixers could make the
best offer. The Sixers have an unprotected, unprotected pick from
Miami in twine could be that double draft where you
have your first year high schoolers and the college kids.
They obviously have folks, they have stared Start strikes me
as a perfect sports for Robert Covington. Strikes me as
(01:04:13):
a guy that can be a better version of Danny Green.
The Sixers have the best trade to be made, but
the Sixers aren't gonna make it. I think because the
Sixers worry that it would just be a waste of
time because Kauai wouldn't show up to the damn physical
Like Kauai is dead set on getting to Los Angeles,
be at the Clippers or the Lakers. Now, I do
not believe. And in sham Surania, it's been misrepresented a
(01:04:34):
little bit. What he said. He didn't say why doesn't
want to play with Lebron? He said what Chris said
that Chris Carter said earlier that day on our show,
which was that Kauai isn't dead set on Lebron. He's
dead set on Los Angeles, be at the Clippers or
the Lakers. The Clippers are interesting because they did resign
Avery Bradley, they did draft two guards. They just have
(01:04:57):
they have lou Williams like they got a bunch of
are its just like, what do they have all those
guards for. Maybe it's to make one of those trades.
Maybe it's for next offseason to make some moves while
those young guards, uh, young guards developed. Here here's the
last part that no one's gotten to. We've all handed
the trophy to the Golden State Warriors without stopping to
take a breath and go wait, saying the Boston Celtics
(01:05:18):
riding Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward to a team that
that probably they make a shot. They beat Lebron James
in Game seven. Why why are we glossing over that
there is another super team and it's back in the
East and the Boston Celtics because there isn't another super
team because there isn't. Because let's we're we're we're assuming
(01:05:39):
that their Celtics are going to get dramatically better, and
I don't know that they will. We're assuming that Kyrie
is going to, when you incorporate the defensive end of
the ball, going to be an enormous upgrade on Terry Rosier.
He'll be an upgrade, but how much of one? And
we're all you're also assuming that the Celtics are going
to be the best team in the East next year,
(01:06:00):
when I don't know that's true. There's there's not a
single player on Boston I'd rather have it than Joel
em Bead And there's not a single player on Boston
I'd rather have than Ben Simmons. So like Boston's got
the better coach and the deeper roster, but Boston is
going to go into now they were able to overcome
this last year obviously, but if they play the Box
in the series or the Sixers in the series, they're
(01:06:23):
not gonna have the best player on the court. And
I'm very curious when the Sixers are gonna look like
when they finally have competent coaching for the first time
since the Honest has been there. Like I the Boston
is very good, and I think Philly and Boston is
gonna be an awesome SIR Conference Finals, But I would
I anticipate will happen unless be Honest just goes to
a whole another level which is on the board. But
(01:06:44):
nobody's competing with Golden States. Yeah, I I couldn't just yeah,
just Kyrie Irving not played for the Boston Celtics. I
I I remember the point time when Kyrie Irvan he
is He's not he's not playing better than he's better.
He's better than Ben Simmons. He's better than Ben Simmons.
He's the jo Joean bead listen Joel embiad Has. Joel
embiad Is. It's like the Jayson Tatum thing. They both
(01:07:05):
have a great amount of town and they may well
be superstars, but like Joan bead Has has not played
a full season. Nobody knows that we can play a
full season. And when you get two important times in
the game, he doesn't really know how to play. He doesn't.
He just hasn't doesn't have the doesn't have the volume
of whereas Kyrie Irving is the twenty five point a game,
six assists a couple of steals, dominant, take over a game.
(01:07:26):
Guy playing for the best coach in the best system,
and he has all these guys around him to create
the space where he's the best finisher in the game.
Hold hold on a couple of things. First of all,
I want to make clear what I was saying when
I said the six is that best player on the court.
I meant embed when I said I'd rather have is
Uh Simmons than anyone on the Celtics batmant. Moving forward,
the indeed thing goes right now, Like, first of all,
(01:07:49):
you're gonna say Ebeads going to be something, and he's
already one of the two best m protectors in the sport.
He's already a guy that could have won Defensive Player
of the Year. He's finished second in it to to Gobert.
And that's fair because Gobert is a monster. You're talking
about Kyrie giving you twenty five and five and four
or whatever it is, I'm fairly certain and Bead gave
(01:08:09):
you twenty three and ten last year with on thirty
minutes a night. Like when his minutes to go up
as they will next year, what like? The idea that
Joel Embiid is a project at this point is not accurate.
Joel Embiid is right now, this moment, when you incorporate
his rim protection, which is the most valuable thing you
(01:08:29):
can do defensively, he I would I would much rather,
not only much rather have him for the next few years,
I would much rather have him right now. And if
we're projecting forward, I think Joel Embiad is gonna be
healthier over the next half decade than Kyrie Irving. But
right now, this moment, Joel embiads better than Kyrie Irving.
I'm gonna completely diagree with you. What about I know
(01:08:50):
you don't like Johannest. No, and I never said I
never said it didn't like Johannest. Jannest is incredible. He
just can't shoot. He just can't shoot. Yet he can
do everything else really really well. He just can't shoot.
But he can dominated game without really a consistent jump shot.
And he's the opposite of Simmons, right, Simmons can't shoot,
but knows he can't shoot, so he never shoots. Janice can't.
You can shoot a little bit better than Simmons can,
(01:09:11):
but he doesn't really know it yet and so he
still takes him which which allows allows them sometimes to
get be beaten by inferior teams because he's taking shots
he should. And I would agree with you on coaching.
I think coaching eliminates some of that as will continue
evolution of that team. I like, look, it's there. If
you want to say honest the superstar, I'm okay with it.
I'd also think that we're under and the most maligned
(01:09:33):
guy who's not a superstar but a definite star and
All Star caliber player in the West was Gordon Hayward.
I would expect him to have a great year as well.
He averaged twenty two in the West, and he's gotten
better every year. He would be the first player to
not get better playing for Brad Stevens, and he was
else is elsewhere. He's the most He's the most maligned
guy who hasn't done anything wrong except for break his
(01:09:54):
leg the first game of the season. I don't I
wouldn't call him the line I would say the Jazz
Shirret didn't seem to miss too much. I think he's good.
I don't don't think he's one of next year coming
off the injury. In particular, I don't think he's one
of the two best players on his own team. And
obviously that's that's that's that's that's crazy. I'm just I
know everybody loves Jason Tatum, like, dude, he's a fourteen
(01:10:18):
of game rookie. He's going to be really good. This guy.
You've got a guy who can guard and play four
positions and has played in the league for half a
decade and was an All Star in the West. And
and yes, he's coming off injury, but it was an
injury that was suffered a year before. He's gonna play
one like it was a late season injury. He's had
plenty of time to rehab. Trust me when I tell you,
Gordon Hayward is the second best player, and he might
(01:10:40):
actually be the best five second best player on that roster. Okay,
well that's what Listen, those things who are the best
players in the East, who's the best player on this team,
Who's going to get the number one pick? Those things
are actually somewhat intriguing about this upcoming season. Unfortunately, who's
gonna win the damn title? Is not all? Are you
(01:11:00):
watching the fireworks over the bridge? What are you doing?
You know? I listen. I went out to Connecticut this weekend,
uh and watch some fireworks on the lake on a
boat with my kids. I'm not a huge fireworks guy.
I don't know what I'm gonna do. I I got
I I could go to the top of my house
in Harlem and see if I can see them, but
I'm not gonna make a point of it. I I
don't know. Maybe that makes me anti July four. I'm
(01:11:23):
not sure. I just I'm chilling. By the way, I
basically have to start. According to you, I have started
hibernating now to bank sleep for when Lebron is playing
these West Coast games. That's that's that's accurate. That's accurate,
and enjoy banking that sleep. Happy for it to you
and your family. Thanks for joining us. Absolutely, It's always
a fun, a ton of fun coming on with you dogs.
Happy for the July talked the Great Nick Right, host
of First Things First Join us. Let's get to David
(01:11:45):
Gascon find out what else is going on the world
of sports. Gascon, do you got baseball updates for me?
Don't do? Would you? Would you please rise? We've got
a couple of things going on right now in New York.
US high cut, US far us God, oh, that is
a standard. Tony at home run the deep Bright Center
(01:12:05):
had three run blast John Carlo the Noz post to Polo.
Now the Yankees take off four nothing lead and he
hit it and one thing caught my eye. He hit
it and Nick mar Kegas wouldn't even turn around. Yeah,
that was the Mamas shot. Courtesy the Yankees Radio Network.
(01:12:27):
But Aaron Judge did soccer home running this game as well.
Yankees took care of business in New York over the
Braves six to two. Red Sox shut out the Nationals
three nothing at Warno. Rodriguez improved to ten and three
this season. Hard to believe in the Nationals are now
a game under five hundred this season at forty two
and forty three. Marlins shut out the Raise three nothing,
and a couple of ball games under way. Tigers are
(01:12:49):
falling behind and now they trail in Chicago over the
Cups three two Padres to A's onece. The Brewers won
nothing over the Twins. In the NBA, a couple of
quick notes, free agent Amir Johnson has agreed on a
one to your deal to return to Philadelphia. That's according
to Adrian war Janowski. In the NFL, Atlanta Falcons have
signed their first round pick wide receiver Calvin Ridley to
a four year deal. And Wimbledon action today, Roger Federer
(01:13:11):
wanted second round matchup and straight sets on the ladies side.
Serena Williams did the exact same thing, Doug. She's all yours.
Why is Aly she? She's a beauty, She's all yours.
She well, I mean your car, I mean car, a boat?
I don't know, and I'm I'm teasing tord time. I'm
(01:13:31):
teasing David. Did you guys see this story out of
Georgia George's course? Uh uh. They had a star freshman quarterback,
Jake from He suffers a broken hand in a freak
Lake accident. Oh who that that that that sounds that
sounds good? Broke his hand? Remember when Lebron broke his hand?
(01:13:53):
How came Lebron broke his hand and after Game four
he had the brace on and then we never saw
a brace. We never saw podcast after that. That was weird,
a little bit weird. Is the NBA about to change
their playoff format because well, the best players switched conferences?
And is that the right move? Find out next in
(01:14:14):
the Doug Gotlip Show Broadcasting Doug got Leap Show, Fox
(01:14:38):
Sports Radio, I hope you're having a great fourth man.
Mm hmmmmm mm hmmm mm hmmmm. Ramos, you should come down.
Let's do Angels Dodgers this weekend. Yes, that sounds good
(01:15:00):
because we're right in between summer baseball for my son
Lucas and soccer beginning, so this is a good time.
You're right, Yeah, I'm Angels Dodgers, Kershaw back through well.
Last night Max Munse hits twenty home runs and of course,
you know, the best player in baseball happens to call
Anaheim home and show Hey Otani also kind of back
in the lineup. Angels aren't great, but Freeway series this
(01:15:22):
upcoming weekend. Um, look, part of what I want to
what we'll get to with something we call what did
the Fox say? Is this discussion about whether or not
you change the playoffs in the NBA to make it
instead of East versus West, just kind of the the
top sixteen, top sixteen teams make the playoffs, and there's
(01:15:42):
issues with that. It's it's fascinating because, um, look in baseball,
they've made some changes. One of the ones they made
that I didn't like. I don't like the fifteen in
each side. I don't like that. Now there's a lot
of talk about expansion in Major League Baseball. If you
could get to sixty in the side, then you could
get back to having inter league weekends, which I think
(01:16:04):
would bring some juice back to interleague. Look right now
at the Nationals Park, you've got Nationals taken on the
Red Sox. That could be. It's probably not because the
Nationals never get there. It could be though, could be
the World Series preview. I mean, dude, check out what
the gnats that game. The Red Sox won three three nothing.
(01:16:27):
Craig Kimber gets his twenty six save and Mookie Betts
two more hits, and the Red Sox moved to fifty
nine and twenty nine, whereas the Washington Nationals are just
forty two and twenty three. Yeah, anyway, Um, The point
(01:16:50):
is that inter league places totally lost its juice. And
the reason is, well, a couple of reasons. One, we
can see everybody play with satellites and if you get
the if you if you get mL network, you have cable,
you can watch whoever you want to play with everyone.
But the bigger thing is there's always inter league series.
When you have fifteen on the side, fifteen AL and
the fifteen NL, there's physically always an inter league series,
(01:17:14):
and so like, I almost feel like you need to
expand to sixteen just to remedy that, to save inter
league play, because otherwise so many of these series are
just another series. Alright, every day, this time we play
for you a portion of a previous show on Fox Sports.
Ready we call it now say. Colin Coward had this
(01:17:35):
to say about the possibility of the NBA changing from
the East West format. Don't just judge Lebron on his arrival,
judge him on his exit. How good with the forty
Niners after Jim Harball left, they were a dysfunctional mess
for four years. Usc it's never ever clicked gotten back
to the Pete Carroll years. Here's the power of Lebron.
(01:17:58):
There are two networks that are the NBA, ESPN and
t n T and both networks that have the NBA
are now meeting with Adam Silver to try to create
a new reseating playoff format. So the playoffs now are
one through sixteen, not East and West. We may change
our entire playoff format because Lebron changed conferences. That, my friends,
(01:18:26):
is power. That is power. That is power. Um do
I think Lebron James is a big portion of this, Sure,
but I also think it's the reality of the West
has just been better than these now. The problem with
that is now you have to change the schedules as well.
Right has to be equal, even schedules. It would add
on average Adam Silver tweet at fourteen thousand miles. If
(01:18:49):
you took last year's playoff teams and you you tinker
with you changed it. Look, I would be open to anything,
but remember the historic the damage to history that you do,
like Cares versus Celtics, UH is incredible. And when you
have two teams from the same region, two teams to say,
you have the Lakers versus the Warriors, that's not gonna
(01:19:11):
rate well nationally, especially in the East Coast. For sixty
of your viewers are I don't. I honestly don't think
that this is something that they will do, though that
they should do, just shouldn't. We're massively downplaying the talent
that's in Boston. We're massively downplaying the talent that's in Philadelphia.
(01:19:33):
And if those are the two most talent teams, then
you have Toronto, who nobody's in love with, but they
they got Lebron out and they seem to be able
to beat anybody but Lebron. He got Milwaukee with the
honest everybody thinks he's an elite, top ten level talent
in the NBA. And then you have Washington, who they
may be able to or not be be able to
take that next step. They do have Beal and Wall.
(01:19:54):
If they don't move on from one of them, we'll
see what happens. Is that they're trying to change playing
without a big as they moved down from Marsine Gore Todd,
I don't think it's just about Lebron. I think Lebron
could be the tipping point. But you know, you watch
the Rockets, you watch the Warriors. It's been the varsity
division for a while. Hey, the Eastern Conference was the
(01:20:15):
varsity back when Jordan's when Jordan ruled it. It eventually
will leaven out. They just need a team in New York.
Everyone's good at something, right. Like there's an expression in
basketball it goes like this, Pros do what they can
do and don't do anything else. Amateurs try and prove
(01:20:39):
to you what they can't do, and they end up
hiding what they can. The Spurs are a bunch of pros,
but they're acting like a bunch of amateurs. I'll explain why. Next.
This The Dug Gottlieb Show Live from Los Angeles and
Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What up, America? Happy Birthday? You
don't look at the oh were two d not know you?
(01:21:03):
You America? You look good? You look good? All right?
You got some issues, Sure got some issues. But I'm
a I'm a I'm a some Summon All up, guy, Summon,
all up. Greatest country in the world. Welcome in Happy
fourth July. This the Doug Gottlieb Show daily here on
(01:21:24):
Fox Sports Radio. We work when they sit, We practice
when they rest. That's what we do here. That's how
we roll. Got a lot to get to. Chris Brussard
will join us Fox Sports NBA Dude and opinion this
plus you can hear my Fox Sports trading on the weekends. Um,
(01:21:44):
people ask me all the time, how do you had
you put together a radio show? And I said, it's
really simple. I stole the best parts of all the
all the guys I respect in this business. Let's it.
That's how I put together a show. And so if
you hear something you're like, hey, that kind of reminds
me of Yeah, that's where I got it right. You know,
(01:22:08):
there's some life lessons and analogies that Colin makes. The
way he forms his rants, I just love mine are different.
My perspective is different. But in many ways, there's homages
to Cowherd. There's homages to Jim Rome, who I grew
up listening to. There's homages too, there's a guy named
lee Ax saw Hamilton's I grew up listening to. There's
(01:22:31):
a part of this show which is built around something
that he did. Um, and my interviewing style, frankly I
take from from I love the way that Dan Patrick
has always gotten guys to open up. Mind's a little
bit different, but there's an homage there. I know what
those guys do well, they do what they do well,
(01:22:51):
and they try not to not do what they don't
do well. Look at their shows, look at how they're built.
Colin will have guests on, but he likes to have
guys on on his couch on Fox Sports One. Why
because he's better. He's not. Interviewing is not what he
(01:23:11):
does best. But he's a great conversationalist, and that's easier
to do when you're in person and you have a
chance to meet the guy beforehand, have a convers and
just have a conversation on there. That's great radio and television.
Dan Patrick's one of the great interviews in the history
of sports media. Just is he's really really good. And
(01:23:33):
he's also better in a room than he is kind
of a on the rent. That's why he built the
show with him and the Dan Nets. He's no dummy.
He's great with a group of people. Pros do what
they do well and don't do anything else. Amateurs try
and prove to you what they don't do well they
actually do well, which diministers what they do well. The
(01:23:57):
San Antonio Spurs are great at player development, they're great
at at at where the draft guys. They understand guys
that will will come from Europe and how they would
fit into playing in the States. Great building teams. They
put together offenses and defenses which fit their personnel, and
when they have injuries they make adjustments. But you know
(01:24:18):
what they don't do well. They don't do this whole
trading leaking story thing all that well, the story that
was leaked as the San Antonio Spurs want Kyle Kuzma
brandon Ingram Josh Hart, couple first round picks and some
swaps as well. We want everything, we want, a home run,
(01:24:39):
we want and I love what they say we want.
It's a Godfather trade. It's an offer they can't refuse, right,
That's the Godfather. But of course also Godfather is the
favorite movie of one Lebron James. We don't really need
to make you a Godfather trade, dude. We're getting them anyway,
is what the Lakers are saying. But when you when
(01:24:59):
you make can ask that is too big, when you
make an ask that is too big, then it will
not only be met with eye rolling, right, but it
will expose you as you really don't know what you're
(01:25:21):
doing here, right. This happens when people buy houses or
sell houses, they ask for way too much money or
they offer way too little. Right when you're when you're
trying to offer, you're trying to buy a house, you
want to lowball somebody without low balling somebody like that's
any or you want. If you're selling a house, you
want to list it as as much as you possibly
(01:25:41):
can without kind of going over. It's kind of like
when you're on the prices right right, you want to
you want to make an offer that either as low
as you can. You don't want to do one dollar.
You want just one dollar more than whoever the lowest
bid is, but you don't want to go over. That's
what you do when you're trying to propose a trade.
(01:26:01):
And when the San Antonio Spurs like, hey we want this,
we want that, you sound like Spalding from Caddyshack. I
want a hamburger, I want to cheeseburger. I want to
You'll get nothing and like it. That's what the Spurs
sound like, and they shouldn't. Great organization. They got all
those titles, they got Gregg Popovitch, they got R. C. Buford.
(01:26:24):
I mean the things that they have done in this
draft of mont Genobli was the last pick of the
NBA draft. Tony Parker was like the twenty nine pick
of the first round. You know, they've just found a
way Like Danny Green, They've think about them all the
mileage they've gotten out of Danny freaking Green. That's incredible.
(01:26:44):
It's incredible. So it's not that they're bad. They're actually
really good. They're just this is not what they're best at.
They're not good at leaking stories like, hey, leaked the
story first time. Huh off top, Yeah, they'll never trace
that back to us, and then it's pretty easy to
trace all. So I think it's, uh, it's fascinating to
(01:27:13):
see the Spurs try and do something well that they
don't do well. Now, the one thing about pros doing
do what you do well and you don't do what
you don't do well, is you do use the summer generally,
generally use the summer to improve on the things you
don't do well. Then when you get to the fall,
you were back, you know, to whatever your default is.
(01:27:34):
So I just look at the Spurs and, hey, you know, yet,
maybe maybe they end up with uh, this is this
is a little bit like what Scott Boris does, right,
Scott Boris, Agent of the Stars in Major League Baseball.
He puts together this ask, which sounds completely ridiculous. Bryce
Harper's worth five million dollars. Huh, five million dollars. So
(01:27:58):
if Bryce Harper Reese for three hundred and fifty million dollars,
there's gonna be somebody that writes, you know, the New
York Yankees saved a hundred and fifty million dollars. The
asking price was five hundred, got it for three fifty.
When the truth is, you paid three hundred fifty million
(01:28:19):
dollars for Bryce Harper right now is hitting closer to
the Mendoza line than he is the two fifty classic boars.
Maybe that's what the Spurs are trying to do. Hey,
all right, listen, we'll settle on Ingram and Hard in
a couple of first Yeah, you got a great deal.
Look what we were asking for. You got a great deal.
You you really grinded us on that one. But it
(01:28:44):
feels like the Lakers know exactly what this game is.
They know his value, they know he wants to come,
and they're willing to willing to wait it out because
even though Kawhi Leonard is first in line, the guy
they want most from Southern California. Great too Way, maybe
the best Too Way player in the NBA, still coming
into his prime. Legs are fresh coming off an injury uh,
(01:29:05):
an injury plagued year in which you only played nine games.
The fact is that there's just a cornucopia free agents
next year, and somebody's gonna want to not only play
with Lebron but come and play for the l A Lakers.
It might not be him. That's why you don't need
to make a Grand Slam home run Godfather type of
trade offer. I'll give you my thoughts on the hot
(01:29:26):
dog eating challenge later on the hour, plus the Press
That is the homage to Hack Saw Hamilton's if you
used to listen to the show. But coming up next
is change uh in the air for the NBA's playoff format.
Is it a realistic possibility? And if someone wouldn't go
into effect, we'll ask our very own Chris Broussard, he
(01:29:47):
joins us. Next, this is the Doug Gotlip Show, Doug
Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. M m m m m
m m m m m m m. There's a report
out that Kawhi Leonard maybe more open to the Clippers
(01:30:08):
than than playing with lebron Um this uh uh. Shams
Sharanio from Yahoo Sports was on with Colin Cowherd, of course,
so one thing is made abundantly clear. I'm not gonna
I'm gonna stress this. There's no guarantee if Kauai hits
the open market next summer he's going to sign with
the Lakers. I think his options have broadened a bit
(01:30:30):
just inside l A. Right, This was Sham's earlier today.
There's no guarantee if Kawhi Leonard hits the mark and
at some much, that he's going to sign with the
Lakers period. I think his options have broughten a little
bit just inside l A. There's another team obviously in
l A. I think he'd be very much open to
the Clippers, and there's a belief around the league that
(01:30:50):
if the Sixers came hard, that there could be a
potential there for him potentially being the long term. But
none of that has even gotten to the point where
a team has reached out to his camp for anyone
around him and said, listening with Kauai, do this, would
he be comfortable coming here for this? I don't think
there's much interest in the Boston Celtics scenario for him.
But the Spurs are gonna hold out and they're going
(01:31:10):
to continue to keep an open dialogue with him camp.
But I think you know around Kauai what's been made
abundantly clear. There's not an interest to go join the
super team. I don't think he's jumping for joy that
Lebron James is in l A with the Lakers. If anything,
that's gonna make him look maybe more towards the Clippers,
because this is a guy that one finals m v
P against Lebron James. You think he's amped up and
(01:31:32):
wants to join Lebron. Now, I think you know that's
been overstated, and the in the Spurs are beginning to
realize that and beginning to realize that we might have
a broad in market for him. Again. I think that's
that's the Spurs again trying to tweak things. Um he
has said he wants to be in l A. Now. Now,
one of the things that we have to conceptualize is
(01:31:55):
I'm forty two years old. I grew up in southern California.
I remember the only time in my lifetime before Lobs City,
the Clippers were even decent. Larry Brown was a coach
they went to the playoffs two straight years. One year
they had to play their home playoff games at the
Anaheim Convention Center. This is before it used to be
the Pond now the Honda Center with the Ducks play
(01:32:17):
before that was built. During the La Riots, they played
the Utah Jazz Carmelone John Stockton in the Anaheim Convention Center.
Outside of that, the Clappers, the Clippers were essentially the
Cleveland Browns of basketball, and the Clippers curse was no
matter who they drafted, he always got hurt. Danny Ferry,
(01:32:38):
Danny Manning. I mean, they had they had some bad
and they had a lot worse picks, but you know,
Bo Kimball never never panned out. They just had and
they played in The worst arena was the Sports Arena,
which is right next to the l a Colisseum, and
it just it wasn't a it was It was built
for the sixties and seventies, not for the nineties. So
(01:33:03):
it's hard for anybody who's my age to conceptualize you
choose the Clippers over the Lakers. But I also think
some of this is posturing. Some of it's come from
San Antonio, and some of it is Hey remember he
grew up in an era in which Clippers weren't bad,
because has been pretty good. And there is Doc, there
(01:33:24):
is Steve Ballmer, there is the thought he wants to
be in southern California. But if if Kawai Leonard, if
the real reason, like Kawhi Leonard's like, man, I want
to honest, I want to out of San Antonio because
I'm from l A. I want to be in l A.
Plus I want to grow my brand. I understand that
Chris Paul grew has been Brandon l A like Griffin
grews Brandon l A DeAndre Jordan even but the reason
(01:33:46):
they did was they essentially formed a superteam. The idea
of a super team is not new and oh yeah,
by the way, you ain't went unless you have it.
Even in San Antonio they had a superteam and you're like,
wait a second, No, they didn't. They drafted their super team.
You had Tony Parker, who's a Hall of Famer, Montogen
(01:34:10):
Nobly a Hall of Famer, Tim Duncan a Hall of Famer,
and Kawhi Leonard a Hall of famer. That's what you
had as a super team. Who cares how you get
those pieces now? Does he want the nonsense that follows Lebron?
Probably not, but he also would love to play for
the Lakers. And if his uncle has any sort of
business sense, he would understand there's a dramatic difference between
(01:34:32):
the Clippers and the Lakers. Dramatic, dramatic. The Lakers are
worth twice what the Clippers were twice, and I feel
like that is that's that's San Antonio speaking more than anything.
So Joey chestnot eight. What's seventy four hot dogs? Is
(01:34:55):
that right? Ramos? That seventy four hot dogs the new
record that he said earlier today in the hot dog
eating contest. That's a lot of hot dogs, Doug, that
is a lot of hot dogs. I had two today
for lunch. You had two hot dogs. I did not
that fast. I'll just eat them at a regular pace. Okay.
So when you have a hot dog, how do you
have it? You mean what I have it? In a bun?
(01:35:17):
Is that what you mean? Or in a bun? What
do you put on it? Oh? I love relish. Relish
is my favorite. So it just relish and that's it.
No catchup, no mustard, just relish, relish And it's maybe
some onions or I like chili dogs so so chili
if if it's not relish, you got a little cold,
you we got working there, ralmos No, I'm I'm feeling
great today. You look amazing. You really do look amazing.
(01:35:40):
Gas Descon, David Gascon, How do you take your hot dog?
I'll do I like Chilian like Johnsons like Chilian cheese.
But if I go the regular route like a Dodger game,
will go catch up mustard onions. Uh no, Relish is it?
I do think that sometimes guys are cheap and or
you know, and they were like, look, I want to
(01:36:02):
put all this stuff on it because I want to
fill up my stomach and I want to get more.
Like I paid five dollars for this Dodger dog, I
might as well get some stuff out of put some
condiments on it. Is that not your did you? Does
all that stuff taste good together? It does? I mean
sometimes I'll even put barbecue sauce on it. That tastes
pretty good as well. Barbecue. Everything tastes good on barbecue sauce. Absolutely,
(01:36:22):
so yeah. I mean Dodger dogs are pretty simple as
is if they're playing. But I'll put a little bit
on it. My taste buds have evolved, so putting onions
and sometimes relish on It's not a bad idea. It
is funny your taste buds evolved. I actually like a
good plane, just a hot dog with a good bun.
Like I'm not a bread guy, but and I'm not
a hot dog guy. But you know, there are just
times you go to a baseball game and you can't resist.
You have a hot dog a plane. Hot dog with
(01:36:43):
a bun is fantastic. Do you have a preference though,
whether you're at Angel Stadium or at Dodger Stadium, or
or maybe like Peco or a T N t um Well,
the thing about pet Co is I feel like they
have an incredibly diverse Like that place is just awesome.
What you can do there, the place you can go beforehand,
and the gas lamp, the food that they have in there. Um,
(01:37:04):
but a hot dog is a hot dog in like
the die like older. You've gotta have a Dodger dog.
You mean I gotta have a hot dog that's made
a Dodger stadium. Yeah, it was the secret ingredients and
the Dodger dog sold the Dodger Stadium. That's Chebez Ravine
that's exactly what it is. That's exactly ways. I've been
to probably half the stadiums major League Baseball. And you
know what, hot dogs are good everywhere, they really are.
(01:37:25):
They're good and bad port What about like, have you
been in Milwaukee? Have you had like a broad worst there?
Or yeah, yeah, I actually went to the Old Guy
I was born in Milwaukee, went the Old County County Stadium.
I've visited visited Marquette as a basketball player and it
was in the spring and we went to a Brewer's
game at the Old County Stadium. Was great. I have
(01:37:45):
trying to think I've been the Miller Park. I think once. Um. Anyway,
I'm like, look, it's all like, no, Chicago style dogs
are a little bit different. And when in Chicago you
have a Chicago style dog. If there was we we David,
we did this yesterday. You weren't here, Oh you were here?
I was what did you What did you say? You
remember remember I slung and miss with the French fries.
(01:38:06):
I said like, oh yeah, I could eat. I could eat.
I could eat the French fries. And I said, said
seven and a half pounds because the French fry record.
You like I could do that, Like, no, you couldn't.
I said I couldn't do seven. I couldn't do five.
But I think I said like thirty because you asked
us to guess, and I think I like shot the
moon on it. I said, like five times on the mount.
So basically, did you pull the spurs though? What you didn't?
I did? Yeah? Pretty much? Huh um? All right, well,
(01:38:32):
like look, I I think, um because you said watermelon, right,
I love watermelon. I love that. Matter of fact, in
my kitchen right now, there's a watermelon, and I thumped
pretty well. I think my wife pocked out a good one.
But even if it's bad, like bad watermelon is like
bad sex, right, still sexually it's amazing. Another, what are
(01:38:56):
you asking? What you're asking about my wife's watermelon? Right? Like,
just me be be clear here is she gonna is
she gonna soup it up a little bit? Meaning is
she gonna make it a drunk watermelon today since it's
festivate all with the fourth of July. No, you don't
have to listen to these people that do drunk watermelons
and stuff. They like, you don't need a dollar if
I want to drink, I will drink if I watermelon watermelon,
I'll have watermelon. You don't need to have a drunken watermelon.
(01:39:18):
And and you know she even goes too far. She
doesn't like any of the watermelon by the rind, so
she cuts all the She'll like cut cut up the
entire watermelon. That's half the fun of it. I like
eating it all the way down to the rhine. I
like getting the watermelon all of my face and I
love and it's like um uh, you know it's like ribs.
(01:39:40):
It's it's like it's like ribs. What's the movie The
Ghost in the Darkness. Have you seen the Ghost in
the Darkness? No? Right, right right? You know the Ghosts
in the Darkness when they find the Lion's Den and
there's bones everywhere. Okay, so that's how I like my
my watermelon rhyns to look. All right, it looks it
(01:40:01):
looks like if if it was in a cave. It's
like you walked in and there's some savage animal that
just eight like, I cannot believe how much watermelon was
this here? Look at the rhinds. There, that's a wild animal.
And I just sit there and I got watermelon stuff
all over my face, like in my in my scruff
and everything. That's what that's that's so that's why I
like the rhind And she's an anti rhindykee because probably
(01:40:23):
she's the one cleaning up after you get messy with it. Right, Yeah,
but it's still messy when you it's messy either way,
Like it's either messy when you cut it up or
messy when you eat it. Right. At least it comes
essentially with a handle. It's like a banana. Banana comes
with a handle, it comes with it comes into like
the greatest thing. The reason banana is one of the uh,
one of the most eaten eaten fruits is because it's
(01:40:46):
like it's so self contained. You don't need a bag.
Don't you just take a banana. You're ready, just open
it up. Whereas cherries, I feel like here underrated, and
it's because they have the pit and everybody hates spitting
the pit. Even though cherries are like the perfect for
the just enough sweet, just enough sour, just big enough
and just small enough all at the same time. But
because of the pit, it knocks them down in terms
(01:41:08):
of the food kingdom. That's a good Call's gonna say.
Kiwi's as well. I do like hughes. Now do you
eat the skin with Kiwi? I do? And the first
time I did it, I got stomach I I felt
like I got food poisoned, and but I got the
stomach ache. But yeah, rah moost do you eat the
skin with? Not like Kiwi's? I agree with you. They're
very good. See I like I like because I like
(01:41:28):
a little tart. That skin is the tart part, and
I like a good keywing. Frozen? What's what's frozen? Kiwi?
Did like? Do you put? I mean, I just I
don't know. I did the same thing with grapes. I'll
put grapes inside the freezer and just eat them like
that after so they're nice. And did you just make
up the frozen Kiwi thing? Or does that? Is that
actually a thing? I've done it? Yeah, I've done it.
It tastes pretty good. So alright, let's frozen thin Min's
(01:41:50):
you know Finn and freezer? Are you one of these
guys that have you ever tried it? Frozen? It's right,
It's it's like up in smoking out up in smoke.
What was the what was that movie the that Dave
Chappelle was in uh, help me out that they half baked? Right?
Have you ever fixed a car? Have you ever fixed
(01:42:11):
a car? On weed? Man? Right, you're like, have you
eating grapes? Yeah? You ever eaten grapes frozen? Have you ever?
Have you ever eaten watermelon frozen? Have you ever tried
bananas frozen? Hey, come on, you got my gears going
with food talk right now? So it's like two thirty
in the afternoon. Okay, just remember America, if you're eating
(01:42:32):
somewhere where they're cooking out on a grill, that doesn't
mean you're going to a barbecue. A barbecue is a
barbecue going to. People are growing out. It's growing out.
Doesn't make you any less well, it makes you a
little bit less of it. Man. And if you don't
know how to use a barbecue or your or grill,
yeah you you just that's one of those that's where
it's poor parenting. Right. If you can't throw a baseball,
poor parenting. You can't shoot a basketball, poor parenting. If
(01:42:55):
you can't heat up and cook on and clean and
do you can't grill, poor parenting. These are all things
that you, as a as a man, you need to
pass down to your child. And you teach them how
wait wait till it's hot, then you put the meat
on it. You gotta wait till they cook. We know
we can't flip it yet. We gotta wait till it's
cook some because otherwise it sticks too much to the grill.
(01:43:18):
Were parenting. Let's get the David Gascon find out what's trending.
Doug lots of things right now and Major League Baseball
a handful of games still in progress. One that just
won Final Cubbies to fear the Tigers five to Jose
Kantana and proved his record of seven and six on
the year and four strikeouts in six innings. Wilson can
trails with a home run and three runs driven in Orioles.
(01:43:38):
On top of the Philis one to nothing, Brewers won
nothing score over the Minnesota Twins. Padres and Athletics are
tied it to two. Angels have Showyotani bank him a
line up today and he has scored twice. He's one
for one as well. Angels on top of the Mariners
three too from Seattle earlier today, he swung on, I
drove it a eat right it us high, hurt us far,
(01:43:58):
hurt us. Oh that is a Stantonian home run to
deep right center had three run blast John Carlo the
Noz Postjo Parlo Yankees Radio Network. He went in yard also,
Aaron Judge went in yard. Ceci Sabathia picked up the
w and the Yankees beat the Braves six to two,
(01:44:21):
Red Socks to the same. So bad, it's just so cheesy. Why,
John Sterling, it's just so it's so I mean, it's
the You're the Yankee. You're the Yankees and John gard No, no,
I mean, I'm just telling you, like, look, I know
he's done it forever. He's eighty years old. He never
misses a game, even for a birth or bar mits
for a death in the family or whatever. But dude,
(01:44:44):
you're the Yankees. Man, the Yankees. By the way, John
Carlos Stanton still only hitting uh to two sixty seven
on base but his and his war is only two
point four. But he does have twenty one home runs
all the year. The Yankees on paced, he had more
home runs than any team in the history of Major
League Baseball, with Stanton and Judge combining to this point
(01:45:08):
for forty six home runs between the two. And then
you factor in Aaron Hicks d d uh Labor Torres,
who is out. He's gonna go on the d L
with a hip. He's got fifteen and they got They
just hit a ton of home runs. Gary Sanchez with fourteen,
even though he hasn't played the entire year. All right,
let's turn the story back to basketball as we're joined
(01:45:29):
by Chris Bruce. Sorry. You can hear on weekends here
on Fox Sports Radio The Odd Couple with Rob Parker
every Sunday three to six pm Pacific time, at six
to nine at night on the East Coast. You're driving around,
driving back from the lake or whatever on a Sunday,
turned into The Odd Couple. Rob Parker's great but bizarre
will make some hot takes and then Chris Brussara wheel
(01:45:50):
him in a reel him in excuse me, um, okay,
where where are you on the Boogie Cousins signing with
the Warriors. Others have said, this is the end of
the NBA season as we know it. What's your reaction? Well,
first of all, a great move by the Warriors, um,
and and if Boogie doesn't work out, they can just
(01:46:10):
cut him and still be the best team in the NBA.
So I think it was a great, no risk move
for them. Um, I don't think it ruins the season. Look,
the Warriors were the prohibitive favorite without him, and with him,
the talent gap between them and everybody else just further increase.
There's no question about it. But I think while I
(01:46:34):
think it's a great move, there are some challenges that
they will undergo. Number One Boogie. As you know, Doug
is a ball stopper. He likes to catch it, survey
a little bit, then decide what he wants to do.
He's gonna have to learn how to move that ball
a lot quicker to Defensively, he doesn't switch on anything.
The Warriors like to switch a lot. That's going to
(01:46:56):
be an adjustment. Three, his role is he gonna be
all right at times we're playing fifteen minutes a night,
we're getting four or five shots a night with not
having the offense focused on him. Because remember, he's looking
to impress people not only by getting along with the
Warriors and not being a problem in the locker room,
but by playing well and showing he's fully healthy. So
(01:47:19):
he's going to have to adjust to a lot of
different things. Um, I think I know, we know. He
didn't get any other offers, and I understand why the
Lakers weren't interested Lebron James. We know once high i
Q players. Boogie Cousins is not a high i Q player.
As talented as he is, I don't think he plays
(01:47:41):
winning basketball. That said, if I'm the Lakers, I would
have offered Boogie a one year deal. I would have
outbid the Warriors and giving him a one year deal.
Come in hopefully healthy by I don't know January or something,
but come in. See if he's a good soldier, See
if he can play with Lebron James, see if he's effective.
(01:48:04):
It would give you a nice little try out in
a year. That that's basically what this is about for
the Lakers anyway. But they didn't go that route. Um
and so yeah, it doesn't in the season, but clearly
the best the rich got richer. Chris Brussarry joins us
in the Doug Gallic Show. I agree with all the analysis.
I think it's gonna be fascinating to see. I think
(01:48:25):
the differences I know Mark was Mark Stein, a former
colleague of ours, pointed out that the Lakers need somebody
in September, October, November, December, January February, whereas he won't
be so whereas the Warriors don't. I do. I think
it could make the Warriors better because they do need
they could use a low post player. He could be
a stretch five for them. Heck, he had a better
(01:48:45):
year shooting the ball in many ways than Draymond Green did.
But the defensive stuff, and they've we've won championships because
they've gotten stops as much as they've hit shots. Uh
And and the chemistry thing could be could be problematic. Um, well,
what you see, what you see, Doug, is that we
saw last year against Houston when the Rockets were able
to get the Warriors out of their motion offense and
(01:49:07):
got them playing is so with Durant they were vulnerable,
and they bring in another player that theoretically could also
get them out of their game. Now there, he's great
individually as Durant is, and so maybe their talent would
be enough. But it is another guy that potentially could
get you away from the Warriors basketball that made them
(01:49:31):
invincible for a few years. I'm I'm looking at the
Kauai thing, and I see the stories leaking out of
San Antonio as far as what they are asking and
I I think they're making ridiculous asks and I think
it could end up having them hold on to Kauai
a little bit too long and getting getting a little
bit less than they thought. What's what's your thought as
(01:49:52):
of now as to what where where are we with
Kawhi Leonard? I do think that the Lakers could give
them war than anybody. I mean, Boston could, but they
won't and they shouldn't. Um Philly could make a nice offer,
but I think I personally I like the Lakers off.
I mean, if you I don't know if you can
get Ingram and Kuzma, but if you can get those
(01:50:14):
two and maybe a pick or two, that's to me.
Those are two players that I think, top of it
could really make really good players, particularly Kuzma, you know,
because he's got some heart and some toughness and some
dog and he Josh Hart does as well. Ingram. The
question is is he too nice? Too soft? But he's talented,
(01:50:35):
we know. Um that said, I do think if I
had to bet where Kauai ends up, I would say
Philly in the trade because I think they'd rather deal
with Brett Brown. They certainly would rather send them East
and if the sixers will part with you know, maybe
Covington and faults Uh eventually or Sarge or Desire Smith.
(01:50:57):
The kid they got this year in the draft may
be at Miami unprotected pick in UM and in Philly.
If if Philly, you want to get Kauai in there
this summer and you want to do what okay Se
did with Paul George, you wanna just love on him,
get the fans into him, just show him everything about
(01:51:18):
your organization. That's great. You know you're gonna be probably
at least in the conference finals if you have him,
and maybe you get to the finals and your your
thing is, Look, we gotta convince this guy to stay. UM.
If he doesn't, I think it's worth the risk of
giving up what they give up. UM. And if he does,
you know, sky's the limit for that team. Is there
(01:51:40):
any chance that they changed the playoff format? I don't
think so this year, UM, and I don't think they should.
I mean, I get that it's lopsided now, but let's
look at the future. I mean, Boston obviously is a
very good team. Philadelphia is coming. They got to I
think superstars in the making. They're gonna be good. Milwaukee
(01:52:04):
Let's see what they do with Boutenholzer. You know, I
think he's a good coach. He'll he'll get the most
out of that team. And then with the Knicks, you
got Porzingis. Does Kyrie goes there? If Kyrie goes there
in the summer, we need to talk about Jimmy Butler.
Then the Knicks could all of a sudden be pretty
good and Boston would still be good. So I don't know,
I don't think they should necessarily change it right now.
(01:52:27):
I've always been a proponent of that though, just dating
back several years ago, even after schedule go one through
sixteen and play it that way. Um. I get the
tradition of the East versus the West, but heck, in
the seventies a lot of teams that are in the
West now used to be in the East and vice versa.
So tradition can can go out the window if they want.
(01:52:48):
There's some other things that travels bad, um and the
start the start. The start times are bad too, especially
for East Coast games. You know, when the East east
and you're starting at four on the west, that's fine,
but you know we east to you know, east to west.
You know, let's say the the Celtics are the one seed.
They come out in the road and they play uh
in Yeah, they play Portland's in the first round or
(01:53:10):
in the second round. Like that's a long travel. You
run the risk of upsets, but you also can screw
up your viewership numbers instead of getting kind of more
localized numbers. Yeah, okay, last thing, I haven't heard Dwayne
Wade's name mentioned, and uh we we had. Obviously it
(01:53:31):
didn't work in Cleveland this year. He goes back to Miami.
He playing Cleveland, He play in l A next year
or you mean Miami or l As I'm in. Um,
I think he would be in Miami. If he's anywhere,
I think it will be Miami. Um, been there, done that.
With the Lebron thing um in Cleveland, I just I mean,
(01:53:54):
I just don't if your way, I can see Lebron
maybe warning wait, I mean look at the team Lebron's built,
and I do mean that Lebron's building. Um, it's like
a team built for nineteen Uh you know you got
no shooting that they've added, and Wade will fit right
in there. But I think Wade, I think he'll land
(01:54:17):
in Miami if he's playing. I don't see him coming
out here. What are they doing? I understand Lance and
I understand Rondo, the culture of toughness. I have basketball
like you guys, guys that he respects. Get that. Javal
McGee gives him a rim protector and they get him
on the chief. Get that, Um, And then you know
you have Kuzma, who he's not a lights out shooter,
(01:54:38):
but he can't shoot. You got Ingram again as of now,
who's done a lights out shooter, but a very good
he can play without without the basketball. Alonzo is actually
a pretty good shooter off the catch, and I think
he will be an improved shooter next year. But like
you said, like Lebron has always wanted to operate with
a team to which there was space in the lane,
and I can't see much many space creators on this team. Yeah, Lebron,
(01:55:04):
the one thing we can question about him is and
we know he's got a huge basketball a Q, but
putting together a team, he he looks a lot like
Michael Jordan in that respect. You know, Um, and I don't.
This team reminds me in a different way. But remember
last summer when they had Derek Rose in Cleveland, Dwayne Wade,
(01:55:28):
Isaiah Thomas. Obviously Lebron and those guys remember Doug. They
can use revisionist history now. But back then, in in August,
in September, and when they got together and worked out,
they thought they were gonna be legit. There were people
in that organization saying, our only problem is we got
(01:55:49):
too much talent. And that is what I see it
similarly now and that you've got a lot of guys
that need the ball, that can't shoot, you know, that
aren't gonna be happy not playing a lot. Um So,
Lebron likes playmakers. Now Lands is a playmaker, Rondo is
a playmaker. But like you said, where's the floor spacing
(01:56:12):
gonna come from? Um So, it's it looks it's one year.
We get it. They made a bunch of one year deals.
This is an experimental year. But um it doesn't look
like it's gonna fit. And you talk about volatility, it
could be. Lebron's never happy when they're not winning. And
he has to remember in Cleveland when he went back,
(01:56:33):
and in Miami when he was there at first they
started slowly both times, and there was drama at the
beginning of the season. So Lebron typically brings some drama.
You got Lineso already in LaVar. You got Rondo, who's
admittedly never gotten along with any coach he's ever had.
You got Land Stevenson. I mean it could be a
(01:56:55):
freaking sucker uh in l A and not for good reasons.
Uh if things go bad. Great stuff as always from
Chris Bruce Sard, who you can see on all the
Fox Sports one shows. Check him out six to nine
Eastern time, three to six Pacific time Sunday nights with
Rob Parker on Fox Sports Radio. Bruce, have a happy
(01:57:16):
Fourth July. Thanks so much for joining us, all Right, Doug.
Doug Gottlieb Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio.
Could a future Hall of Famer be returning to his
old team? Find out next? Do Do Do Do Do
Do Do To To To to Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Be safe for the fireworks tonight. Don't drink
(01:57:42):
and drive, uber lift or ask a buddy to drive
you home. Have yourself a great night with fireworks when
your kids are probably up too late, and a fireworks
show that you've seen on repeat over the last however
many years of your life. Yeah, whatever. It's the same
thing over and over again. But America enjoy it. Let's
get to the press, the press. Gas man David Gascon
(01:58:04):
joins us what he got, David, I gotta do a
friendly reminder, and I know you will be involved in this,
Doug tomorrow, since there's nothing going on today. Fufull World
Cup action. It continues tomorrow and all the funds available
on FS one starting at ten o'clock eastern at Uruguay
and France, and then followed by that you get Brazil
and Belgium and they'll kick off at two o'clock eastern.
(01:58:30):
Do you have a favorite still in this thing? No, no, no,
I just like good soccer, all right, and I do
like the embopy kid from from France. He's nineteen. Only
proves my point. He's nineteen, he's five ft ten. We
could be the best soccer country in the world if
we just tried. I gotta do it well. Speaking of
some youth right now, let's switch on over to the
(01:58:52):
hardwood court. In the NBA noted it earlier today, free
agent a Mere Johnson signs a one year deal with
the Philadelphia seventies. Six years that is now firmed. It's
a done deal. Another note Adrian war Janowski is has
reported and talked about this earlier, is that he believes
the Lakers got the info a Lonzo Balls meniscus from
(01:59:12):
Lonzo Balls camp and this is what he said that
knee injury. I think there was a belief around the
Lakers is that it was within his world and then
it got leaked out there to keep them from getting traded.
It doesn't want to be traded from l A. It
wasn't the Lakers who wanted information out on that knee injury.
There were a lot of teams who were checking im
possible deals with the Lakers. They wanted to know. There
(01:59:34):
were a lot of questions about that knee end quote. Well,
remember the knee had him out a long period of time, uh,
during the season, and so of course people are gonna ask,
They're gonna inquire. And when they signed Rondo, everybody's ears
got perked up. Hey are they gonna move on from Alonzo?
I think they want a Lonzo Ball to be with
him in the future, but I don't think it's an
(01:59:55):
absolute guarantee. He's not immovable. I think Kuzma and then
maybe are are more immovable. Considering how they want to
how they want to play and be in the future.
The last one will go to the National Football LA.
Damian Thomason, who is now a special assistant for your
l A Chargers, said that he believes Antonio Gates could
return and the only way he does the National Football
(02:00:17):
League is what the l A Chargers. Thomason said, quote,
I think he has the mind frame. If he goes
and plays, it will be for the Chargers Chargers. If
it's not the Chargers, then I'm good. I won't play
at all. End quote. Remember at fifteen catches, last two
games of the season, there's not much gas up in
the tank, but a little bit. I think the I
think the Chargers, if they have them, they don't want
(02:00:38):
to use them through to O T. A s in
training camp. They want to bring him in and let
him get in shape. But they're only gonna bring him
in that they know they're gonna play him. That's the
problem with having a former future Hall of Famer back
get out there and pressed. That was the press. All right,
well you're grilling, you're cooking, and whatever. Man, have a greade.
Fourth of July. I do like a good fireworks show.
I just wish the finale was the whole show, right,
(02:01:00):
what are we waiting for? This? The Dug Gallip Show,
Happy fourth Fox Sports Radio,
