Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Boom, What Up America
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio Live and Direct from
the City of Angels, which gave us an unbelievable night. Actually,
a very watchable NBA game with an upset Lakers get

(00:24):
to win over the Whiz, and maybe more importantly, a
World Series game for the ages eight count them. Eight
home runs, wow, eleven innings and uh some some new
juiced baseball theories which I actually believe so much to

(00:45):
get to. Uh. Also, Joe Giordi loses his job as
manager of the Yankees. Not a surprise to anybody who's
been following the Yankees, as when he was asked about
the Yankees future time and again in the playoffs, he
would mention the Yankee or their future. He would not
say our future. This is not a surprise anybody who's

(01:06):
just like, oh, I'm really surprised by that. You just
won't follow the Yankees, which is okay, it's hard to
follow baseball every day. Um, but I believe it was
a personality clash. I believe it was. Also. Joe is
a He does his own research, He used his own study,
He does his feel you know, he's a former catchers.
Catchers generally keep a journal from every game they've caught

(01:30):
and every game they coach, every game they manage. That's
just what they do. They have They have their own
kind of stats and right up and their own scattered
report on things. And Brian Cashman is very much an
analytics guy. I was told that the Yankees have ten
analytics guys that travel with the team in the playoffs.

(01:51):
And so when you when you hire a guy to
do a job and then you're constantly making suggestions on
how to do a job, well, no, when you do this,
you do that? What do you do this? When you
do that, even if it comes from the best place,
you've come from the good place. At some point the
guy's like, hey, you know what, f you, I'm gonna
do it my way. And because he want to do

(02:11):
it his way, Uh, it allowed Brian Cashman to find
a what fight. Now, he's gonna find a guy who
will do it Cashman's way. They'll get a yes man.
They'll get a guy who manages the players and egos
and kind of does what they want based upon their numbers.
That's what's gonna happen. Um. But what's interesting about it is.

(02:34):
I do wonder what the analytics crowd would have said
about Dave Roberts going out there and getting rich Hill early,
going to Kenley Jansen in the eighth instead of waiting
to the ninth, or maybe even my proposed idea, which
was I wouldn't have used Kenny Jansen in Game one
unless I absolutely positively had to, right, they had a

(02:58):
two run lead in the ninth inning, had Brandon Morrow,
who went one to three through ten pitches. You mean
to tell me he can't start another inning and if
he doesn't give up a hit, leave him in there.
If he does, then you bring Jensen in. But why
let more people see Kenny Jansen then need to And

(03:18):
of course they saw him, and more and more guys
saw him last night, and uh look some things went
bumping the night. There's a couple of big takeaways I
have on last night's Basic League baseball game. One to
anyone who says, well, I was just wild, and Craig,
you'll never see eight home runs in a seven to
six ball game. You have been watching baseball this year?

(03:41):
This is what the game has become. Home run, strikeout,
pitching changes galore, home run strikeout, and it's also a
very long ball game. Now, look you're lucky. It's the
World Series and it was incredibly entertaining and so everybody watched.
But this is also what regular season games are like.

(04:03):
And though there are home run fest there's long stretches
where there are no home runs, which brings us to Dallas,
Kaiko saying, I think the balls are juiced. Major League
Baseball wants to put on a show. We crushed the
home run record this year. Honestly, I think the balls
are juiced, Kaiko said. Really powerful guys in this league

(04:26):
they're gonna get. There's when you can you can tell
the difference in a mid range guy. He's hitting twenty
plus homers. Now they're not. That's not supposed to happen,
and it's happening. That's what Major League Baseball wants. They
wanted exciting to run lead, you'd come back, hit another
home run. Everybody's still watching. That's what they want. That's
what they're getting. There was sixty one hundred five home

(04:51):
runs and all time record. So do either the players
of the baseballs are are juiced? And since at least
they're testing the players, I'm gonna go with I'm gonna
go with the baseballs. Everybody says the baseballs are harder,
the baseballs are different. Um. I thought it was a

(05:14):
spectacular night for John Smoltz, even when Brenda McCarthy's, uh,
what was it a slider? When he says you can
see that dot. When you can see that dot, that's
not a good thing, which became the game winning home run.
I mean, yah c L Peak, I cannot watch ya
c l Peak enough. My quick takeaway on ya cel Puig,

(05:35):
I tweeted this, I understand that my infatuation for watching
ya cel peak in a in a in a short series.
I understand why women dig the bad boy, right, That's
why they that's why they want to date the bad boy.
That's where they want to sleep with the bad boy.
That's my kind and I don't have that kind of infatuation.

(05:57):
I don't go that way. Not that there's anything wrong
with that with ya c l Puig, but there's something
about him now. I would also contend that much like
my friend that makes fart jokes all the time, at
some point you're like, okay, I've had enough. But considering
it's only the playoffs and it's only four, four to
seven games, you go back whatever, the fifteen games, seventeen

(06:18):
games of the playoffs. I'm okay with it. I'm on
team ya c L. And how great was it last
night that he was up and he really struck out twice? Right?
He struck out on the two two pitch and then
struck out again on the three two pitch. That thing
was only ending one of two ways, pe getting a
home run or Peek striking out. I didn't think Dave

(06:42):
Roberts do. I think he should have gone to Jansen
in the eighth inning. I look, I think he he
It's one of those deals where he may say he
trusts Tomorrow, but he clearly doesn't trust Morrow as much
as he trusts Jansen, and he probably trust Jansen a
bit too much. But that number of nine, eight and
oh when leading in the ninth inning this year for

(07:05):
the l A. Dodgers is remarkable, is absolutely remarkable. But
he's not really a six out save guy. So I
don't mind going to the closer early when it's in
high leverage situations. I just didn't think one runner on
in the eighth inning was a super high leverage situation.

(07:27):
Just like you go back to the night before, and
I said, I wouldn't have brought him out even for
the ninth unless you had to let Morrow get through it,
hold onto him, and then you would have felt better
about him pitching on extra rest for six outs instead
of pitching last night with which includes warming up and
then pitching or pitching two nights ago and then pitching

(07:49):
last night. Here's Dave robertson why pulled rich Hill early.
I just felt that right there at the top of
their order coming up, and with the way our bullpens
been throwing, and you looked back behind that we had
three scoreless innings after that, to just trust that the
guys behind him. And the bottom line is, you know,
I'll take Kenley any day of the week. With a

(08:10):
one run league, going to the ninth inning, no and
leading after eight innings until Wednesday night. That's that's remarkable. Yeah.
I mean, look, if if the Dodgers lose this series,
last night is the reason why they got to Verlander
to whatever extent they had, and we only gave up
two hits, and yet he was down three one when
we left the game. That's Baseball two thousand seventeen, right, Like,

(08:33):
how can you only make two mistakes and you're down
three to one. That's crazy. But that's what happened. And
there were some things that went bumping the night. There
was the there was the there was the toss the
second base which hit the umpire. There was the ball
hitting off whose hat did that hit off in the
outfield and and scurried. And there was a Jack Peterson

(08:57):
hit off his lid and then sprayed in the left field.
There's the diving play from Twig which hit off the
top of his glove, became a ground rule double that
actually started the rally in the eighth He was upsetting himself.
If he makes that play, that eighth inning probably never happens.
And Jansen doesn't come into the game. So there's a

(09:17):
bunch of things that that did not go the way
of the Dodgers. But I don't hate using Jansen for
a six out save. I just think he obviously doesn't
Trustmorrow nearly as much as he says he trusts Tomorrow.
Here's something really interesting said. I think John Smolts, if
he doesn't win an Emmy for a game analyst, regardless

(09:40):
of sport, they should not have the award. This year.
I learned more watching John Smolts broadcast game than I
can ever remember learning watching a Major League baseball game.
John Smoltz's job is to forecast, foreshadow, tell me what
may might happen, and then more importantly, tell me why
things happened. Tell me why, Joe Bucks, tell me what

(10:00):
he's supposed to. Tell me why. Here's John Smolts forecasting
and foreshadow and going to the bullpen early, and what
could happen. This doesn't mean the Dodgers are are going
to lose the game. Obviously a tie game, but it
sets up better now for the Astros with all that
the Dodgers have had to use, so many more things
have to go right. The more people that come in

(10:23):
to pitch a baseball game. I know it sounds great
when it works. You said that throughout this postseason, more
guys you bring in from out of that bullpen, the
more you're asking everybody to be perfect. Yeah, it just
doesn't always work. I don't even think it's necessarily about
being perfect. It's it's the devil, you know, versus the
devil you don't idea Like even if a guy isn't

(10:47):
hitting his spots or a guy is uh is not
as doesn't have his best stuff, at least you know,
you can get a sense if he can handle the pressure, right,
I mean no, really, le on those first could pitches,
they hit the dirt and they're out of whack and
he's not able to locate. You're like, all right, But
with every guy you go to, you're dealing with a

(11:09):
completely new human being. And that's that's, honestly the whole
discussion between Girardi and the analytics guys with the Yankees.
The analytics guys with the Yankees would always go and
make a pitching change based upon what the spreadsheet says,
whereas Girardi is a former catcher, and though some of

(11:30):
it's about numbers, a lot of it's about field. And
you just look at a guy like, you know what,
I understand the numbers tell me that the splits and
this and that and the other thing. That's great, But
I just got the feel. It's like kek Hernandez last night.
The single he got was that that was in the
eleventh inning, Right in the eleven Uh, well, no, I

(11:54):
wasn't in love. I'm trying to think which which comeback.
It was maybe the tenth inning, which led to the
comeback right kek her Nan. This is terrible against right
handed pitching, and yet he's in there. He's hitting below
two against right handed pitching, and he laces a single
because by the numbers, the splits tell you doesn't have
power from the right side, only two home runs. By

(12:15):
the numbers, he's a far inferior hitter from the right
side than his left side. But what the numbers don't
tell you is k K r. Nane has had three
home runs. In the final game, Game four against Chicago Cubs,
He's still feeling great about himself. Confidence just comes out
of his body right now, and because of it, he
steps in against the relief pitcher and and clocks a

(12:37):
single to right field. So like, look, I'm I'm more
of a field guy than an analytics guy. Dave Roberts
probably did everything by the numbers. My issue would be
more with what he did in Game one, unnecessarily as
opposed to Game two. Smalt is of course right in
that maybe not the idea of of guys having to

(12:59):
be perfect, but having guys that perform at their level.
Considering the pressure of the moment, and the Dodgers had
the lead when Justin Verlander left the game that is
not expected. And to get to Verlander and to lose
with your bullpen something that had not happened all season
in the ninth inning puts you on a course to

(13:19):
which you lose the series. If they lost, lose the
series last Night's the reason why you're up three one
head in the eighth, you're up three two heading into ninth.
You have to close the door. And if you think
all those home runs are abnormal, they are except for
baseball in two thousand seventeen, and I guess the You

(13:41):
can tell me all these guys have changed their swing
path and they're no longer choking up, and analytics tells
them to swing hard and swing for the fences even
with two strikes. That's great, but there's a ridiculous number
of home runs and the only logical conclusion Asian is
some had to been done to the Baseball's has to

(14:02):
be a Basell manipulation, right, Daniel Jeremiah Joints have coming next.

Joel was there a minute ago, and maybe not a
minute ago when I first started the show and I
look up and Ryan Smith sitting there. I'm my bat.
Ryan Smith has been in the ones and twos uh

(15:34):
Ryan Music. Part of the production crew, along obviously with
Cindy Katz, who books the guests, including including the Great
Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network has his own podcast
with Bucky Brooks. They break down college, they break down
pro and he joins us every week here on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, Daniel, let me start with college football.

(15:54):
Sam Donald travels to Notre Dame and people are hopping
They're breaking their ankles hopping off the Sam Donald to
the NFL number one pick bandwagon. Um, should they be
hopping off that bandwagon? Well, I mean it's just a
matter whether or not he's gonna come back. I mean,
that's what we don't know. Is he gonna leave or
is he gonna stay. That's the big thing. I think
if he did decide he wanted to leave, there's still

(16:17):
a lot of fans his at the next level, and
I think there's a lot of reasoning for his struggles
that that go well beyond him. I mean, when you
look at what they're playing with upfront right now, Um,
you look at some of the young players they're breaking
in on the outside. We can make a lot of
excuses for him. Now, he's not playing perfect football by
any stretch, But Jamis Winston didn't play perfect football went

(16:39):
number one. You look at de Shaun Watson was. You know,
both those guys were second in the country and interceptions
there last year in college and both of them were
first round picks and have have done quite well. So
he's not gonna get the same criticism from the NFL
teams and he's getting from the media. Um, okay, But
but is he seeing it? Does he Does he see
it like he should, look like he should in terms

(16:59):
of recognizing coverage, is understanding where to go with the football?
Is he Is he doing NFL things in terms of
seeing it, Yeah, he's doing. Look, you can see him
get through progressions really really quick. My biggest issue is
not the decisions. Now, he threw into into a rolled
up corner for a pick against Notre Dame, which is
a bad decision. But I could find you four or

(17:19):
five picks from Deshaun Watson that we're worse. Um, you
know they're playing pit and you're you've got a lead
in that football game. You're getting ready to go and
score a touchdown. He throws a pick to a linebacker
at a goal line. Um ended up kind of costing
him that game. They could have ice that game with points.
So um, yeah it was. There's a play here there.
You can point that out. But I can point out
plays where he's working the full field and and making

(17:41):
some beautiful anticipatory throws. My issue with Sam has just
been footwork wise. He's letting himself get a little bit
too sloppy, and some of that is the pressure he's
under with the group he has blocking. I mean the
mismatch in that game, Doug, when you look offensive line
defensive line for both teams, Notre Dame was so much
better up run. I mean, it wasn't even close. How

(18:02):
much of it's coaching, how much of it's the injuries
for you for USC, well, I mean I think the
injuries are a factor. I think, honestly, some of it
just misses. In recruiting. I don't care what you know,
rivals ranked you as in terms of the recruiting class.
I don't see a lot of NFL players in that
offensive line for USC. UM And I look at Notre

(18:22):
Dame and I see two first rounders at left tackle
and at left guard, and I see some other dudes
up there. They're gonna play on Sunday. So, Um, some
of that, I think, you know, whether or not they're
not developing these kids or they just missing the evaluation.
I just know when I watched Sunday football, and I'm
sure you're the same way, Doug, and you look and
you see the Clay Matthews and the Tyrant Smith's and

(18:44):
Everson Griffins, Like those dudes aren't at USC anymore. But
but why not? I mean they haven't, Like in terms
of recruiting rankings, they have, and they just mis evaluated
those positions. I think so. And I think look in uh,
in college football, for my money, it's you gotta go
find a great quarterback and then you've got to load

(19:04):
up first of all on the defensive line and then
if you can, you know, go find some offensive linement
as well. But I mean I remember going through there
and scouting. You had the Ryan Khaliel's, you had the
Tyrant Smith's, mac halil Is a first rounder. Um, they
had a lot of NFL players, guys like deuced with TWOI.
Some people won't remember these guys were all first, second,
third round picks. Um, this is not They don't have

(19:25):
the same caliber kid right now. Yeah, it's really really
fascinating to see whether or not that's because of the
n c A stuff. It's got. Part of it has
to be the constant coaching turnover, right, Like you just
you can't even if you're you're having guys from within
the idea that you're just shuffling through coaches up until
Clay Helton was named head coach like a year and
a half ago. That just makes it really hard to,

(19:47):
you know, maintain the consistency in terms of recruiting it.
It just does. Danna Jeremiah, Dan Jeremiah joining us. Uh,
let's let's go to the NFL. The only team that
hasn't been able to move the football and score consistently
against the Patriots is the Atlanta Falcons. So, which, which
of course leads many of us to go like, all right, well,

(20:09):
which one of these things is different than last year?
And Steve Sarkisian jumps out at yet, how much of
the blame do you put on sark Well I mean,
I think it's kind of a fifty deal. I think
he's taken a lot of heat. And you know, Kyle
Shanahan is one of the best play callers in the NFL.
I mean I think you look at at really him

(20:29):
and you look at what McVeigh has done, and uh
with the Rams this year, you can see what he
had previously with the Redskins. I put those guys way
up there on the list, so he had his his
work cut out to replace Shanahan. They're still moving the
ball between the twenties. I mean, I think they're like
seventh and yards. I mean they're very very efficient move
between the twenties. They've just bogged out when they've gotten
to the red zone. I think some of that's maybe

(20:51):
a lack of imagination and play calling. Um, some of
that's just poor execution, you know by the guys on
the football field. But uh, that to me is the focus.
It has to be finishing drive. They're moving it fine,
they've got to find a way to finish. Their points
are way down. I think you can kind of look
at their woes once they get down there, Uh, space
gets tight, and that's when you know play design and

(21:13):
execution are huge, and you know, you can I think
listening to the criticism, it feels like it's you're hearing
Stark and ten percent execution. I would put it probably
more sixty forty. Yeah. You know, the the Stark thing
is interesting because if you go back two years ago,
Kyle Shanahan is the offensive coordinator and they turned the

(21:34):
ball over a bunch in the red zone. So, yes,
last year was great. Remember the year before with Kyl Shannahan,
it was Matt Ryan making having too many having too
many turnovers in that same red zone area, no question,
and there was an adjustment period just in terms of
a relationship with Shanahan, Uh, and with his quarterback, Matt Ryan.
That takes time to develop that chemistry and to understand

(21:56):
what he likes, what he doesn't like, and not put
him in bad situations that he can't handle. And obviously
they figured it out in a big way last year
to get to the super Bowl. But that's still very
much a work in progress with Stark. That's the voice
of Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network joining us on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, let's get to Carson Wentz,
who were anointing as the next great NFL quarterback? Is

(22:18):
it is? It? Is? He as good as he looks
to the layman. To the layman, we're like man. The escapability,
the leadership, the arm strength, he checks a bunch of boxes.
To somebody who actually watches this thing, judges it for
a living, is it that good? Well, there's a there
is a buzz, not only from guys like me watching it,
but just this morning, I was talking to a team

(22:41):
executive around the league and pretty high up guy, and
Carson Wentz his name came up, and these are his words,
not mine, he said, He said, DJ he is a
more explosive version of Ben Roethlisberger. Um, I mean he
is a he is He's been phenomenal. He's putting on
a show. He's confident. Um, you see him trust, seeing
his eyes throwing with more anticipation. But to me, at

(23:04):
the quarterback position, you look inside that division, you know,
the thing that separates him and Doc and even cousins
can do it to a degree. You've gotta be able
to get yourself out of some trouble. And not just
the Houdini play that he had that ever made a
big deal of it, just being able to make a
throw when you're getting hit in the chest, being able
to just sidestep a free man like that's one thing
that Eli, you know, he can't do that, and and

(23:26):
Carson has the ability to do that. And I think
that's what makes them special. I don't think there's any
question about it. Plus they have an incredible front seven defensively,
which is uh, which is dramatically changed them into now
all of a sudden, from a from a pretender to
a playoff not just a favorite, but also right now
the best team record wise in the NFL. Daniel Jeremiah
joining us. Steelers are running the football, they're winning games.

(23:49):
There still seems to be some dysfunction. Um, what is
what are you? What's your take on the success based
upon running the football of the Steeler's offense, whether or
not that's the way they have to go in the
remaining games. Well, I just broke them down and I
came away with the kind of how they turned it
around over the last couple of weeks. And I came
way with three p's. Uh. First of all was the

(24:11):
patients have been they're rushing for dropping seven against him,
and he was forcing the ball down the field. They
had a bunch of a bunch of turnovers. Um, he's
not doing that anymore. He's really taking what they're giving him.
He's found checkdowns to Bell or you're getting Bell one
on one with a linebacker and a checkdown scenario. He's
you know, getting you twelve yards on a bad play
and up to forty yards on a plate the other

(24:34):
day against the Bengals. So you've got the patients have
been You've got the power of Bell putting in his
belly thirty plus times three the last four weeks, Uh,
finishing runs nine man fronts. They're still running the ball
and being effective with it. Uh. So it was me,
it was the patients, it was the power, and then
just the presence of Antonio Brown. I mean the touchdown
of Juju Smith Schuster is because Antonio Brown is getting
bracted by the safety and Juju's naked down the seam.

(24:56):
So uh, that's kind of how they've got that thing rolling. U.
It feels like they're gonna just uh make mart Tavis Bryant, uh,
you know, beyond scout team. They're gonna make him crawl
before he walks. They're not going to trade him. What's
your sense of whether or not he's being misused or
misevaluated by the Steelers. Well, I think it's it's it's

(25:17):
you know, just a lack of of of patients and
understanding on his part. Um. I still think that there's
a plan for him and a role for him. He's
never going to be a guy that's a ten catch guy.
He's gonna be someway that's gonna get his plays, you know,
kind of like a Ted Gain has made a career
out of You're gonna get two or three balls. You've
gotta get a couple of big plays and game hopefully. Um,
you're gonna have games where you get shut out. You're

(25:39):
not gonna be a high volume target in that offense.
And I think the frustration from the Steelers came from, look, dude,
we stood by you through all your mess and you
know you don't get a couple of balls and you're
gonna go, you know, complain about are you serious? Right now? Uh?
So I think that I understand completely why the Steelers
are missed. So so do I. Uh, worst Ravens team
I've seen in a decade. Right, Um, how fixable are

(26:04):
these issues? Well? I've never seen team. This injury ravaged,
but I've never seen no matter how many injuries they've had,
I've never seen him play defense is bad and not
stop the run has never been I mean that was
always something that was taken care of. They're not good,
and you know, missing on receiver after receiver after receiver
has come back to bite them, and and Flacco is

(26:25):
you can make excuse after excuse, and they're missing Yonda
and all these guys. But he hasn't played well in
several years now. This is not a few week issue.
This has been a several year issue. And I think
this offseason I'll be shocked if they're if they're not
in the market for a quarterback and they don't have
one ready to go for next year. Fascinating. What about
the other quarterback Matt Moore plays tonight. If he plays well,

(26:47):
if they win, regardless of Cutler, should he remain as
their quarterback? Absolutely? Absolutely, you ride the hot hand. I
know you gave ja a little bit of money, but
you know he didn't have an off season with you.
Matt More is more comfortable with the players around him,
and uh, if he's playing well, you don't pull him out.
You can't you roll with Matt Moore and Jay Cutler

(27:10):
is old enough and smart enough, he should be able
to be okay with that great stuff. Danna Jim I
download his podcast with Bucky Brooks, check him out in
the NFL Network, or listen to him weekly here in
the Doug Gotli Show. DJ Gray Stuff Man can't tell
you how much I appreciate you join us. Thanks Dougbody,
that's the great. Dana Jeremiah joined. Speaking of great, let's
welcome in Dan Buyer, who course has an outstanding show

(27:30):
on the weekends here and joins us daily. Uh Dan,
what he got for yeh? Doug Fantasy Show. It's hard
to recommend any Ravens starting with a week in and
week out, but Dolphins and Ravens. We'll start week eight tonight,
eight five Eastern Time in Baltimore. Looking ahead, the New
England Patriots aren't gonna have linebacker Dante hot Tower for
the rest of the season. Multiple reports say he has

(27:51):
done for the year with the torn pectoral muscle. Patriots
have the Chargers coming up on Sunday. Cowboys sound kicker
Mike Nugent to take the spot of injured kicker and
Bailey Dallas takes on Washington this weekend interesting because the
Redskins actually tried out Nugent for their place kicking gig
a week ago. Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford said, I'll practice
again today because of his sore knee. They've got the

(28:12):
Browns in London on Sunday. Well, on Monday night, the
Broncos face the Chiefs. No practice today for Broncos wide
receiver Emmanuel Sanders. The Yankees aren't gonna bring back Joe Girardi.
Done after ten seasons, including a World Series title in
twenty nineteen, Girardi's four year contract expired after they are
ousted from the a LCS. You know, Joe Girardi's tenure

(28:34):
in the Bronx is Overdug and Astro's pitcher Dallas Kilt
told the USA Today and you touched on this at
the top, that he thinks that the ball is juiced
to the World Series and in the post season said
a hundred percent. He thinks. So we'll see if there's
more home runs. Tomorrow night. Game three between the Dodgers
and Astros is in Houston, and you will see it
on Fox and you can hear Dan Buyers show six
eight a m. Pacific time. That's nine to ten, nine

(28:59):
to nine East Coast time. That leads you into Fox
NFL Sunday. What's the NFL on Fox? What's the show called? Yeah,
that's that's what That's what it's called. So you just
you get in Sunday morning. You clicking on, you get
all the updates, all the information. Great show. I listened
to it every Sunday. You should too. Brought to you
by True Car with find out what other people in

(29:19):
your area paid for the same car you're looking for
new or use visit True Car to enjoy more confident
car buying experience music. Why would you tell me those
numbers and put Pacific time? You always go East Coast time, Dude.
You gotta think outside of your own little bubble. People
people adjust, people adjust backwards. They don't adjust up right
or or give me both in the future. You're just

(29:42):
West coast guy. There's always the next time, Doug, There's
always the next time. Good Lord, willing things to work out?
Is that what you're going with? Uh? I do um?
And then Michael Harmon who you can hear on with
Jason Smith Nightly Dan and Michael Harmon said show it's
really good. Every Sunday warning, I get up and get
coffee and take the dog out, and then I text Dan,

(30:03):
I love your show and he's like, stop bothering me,
I love the Lebron's the best point guard in the league.
After one night, two nights ago conversation, did you guys
hear any of that? Like? Nick Wright was like, Oh,
he's the best point guard at the league. Colin Cowards like,

(30:26):
did you hear what Nick Write said? Like? Nick watched
the Bulls and the Calves he said it, so it
must be true. And I went on cow Heard Day.
I was like, do you know who started for the
Bulls last night? I was like nope, And I said
good because unless Paul Zipster does it for you, unless
Justin Holiday does it for you, not Drew Holiday. Okay,

(30:51):
Justin Holiday, he's the third best holiday. Aaron Holiday places
for u c l a second best holiday. He Look,
he's in the NBA. A's a he's a pretty good player,
but he's like a borderline NBA guy, and he's starting
for the Bulls who are trying to lose and doing
a really good job of it. So and the other
one was, uh, Jeremy Grant. Those are the three starting

(31:15):
that's the starting backcourt for your Chicago Bulls. So if
you want to evaluate Lebron James as one of the
great point guards in the NBA, it's really hard against
that type of backcourt. Then last night he went up
against the Brooklyn Nets. Remember the Nets, as Dan Buyer
told us yesterday, like, hey, Danzel Russell is not even
playing at night, and Spencer din Wit he hit a

(31:38):
couple of huge shots, played great off the bench board.
So last night he has eight turnovers? Does have tennisis
as a turnovers? And I'm not gonna sit here and
say he's a bad point guard. First thing is Lebron
has kind of been a point guard his whole career. Right,
most games, you've seen the ball go through Lebron at
the end of a game where he comes off a
high ball screen and drives and kicks, comes off eyeball screen,

(32:00):
they dare him to shoot. That's point guard stuff. Or
they throw it to him and he's like a point center,
point power forward. And he tries to pass out of
a double team and the double team doesn't come. You
make him score. That's that's why he scores so many points.
Is because the way to beat Lebron is to make
him make jump shots. But the common mistake is Lebron's

(32:22):
a great passer. Well, he must be one of the
greatest pastors in the history of the game. Look at
the assist the average, and here's where you need to
take a breath and have context. For a power forward body.
He's in the conversation of best guys at that size
to pass the basketball outside of Magic Johnson. He's not

(32:43):
a point guard. He's not a pure pastor. He's not Magic,
he's not Steve Nash, he's not Mark Jackson, he's not
John Stockton, like those guys are the greatest pure passers
in NBA history. Frankly, he's not a good pastor. I
don't think it's Larry Bird. He's a very good pastor.
But for somebody his size and for a great score,
he's a great pastor. Does that make sense? They give

(33:06):
it proper context. See, because what you hear is Lebron
is not a good pastor. And I want to said
he's an outstanding pastor. He's not one of the top ten,
top twenty pastors in the history of the game. Most
of those guys are guards. And the big guys that
are are the our Magic Johnson who played point guard
pure point guard most of his career, so at ten

(33:32):
turnover eight turnovers. Last night they lost, And I thought
this quote was great because what what a double loss
for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who remember, because of the trade
with the Celtics, they get the nets number one pick,
first round pick. It's not lottery protected. Tyrone Louse said,
we're running around here worrying about getting the Brooklyn pick.
They might want our pick. That's Calves coach Tyron lou

(33:54):
After the Nets beat the Calves one twelve to one
oh seven, so Nets didn't have their best player. Nets
end up beating him, and it's just another win for
the Nets who are trying to rebuild themselves, and it
hurts the Chas in terms of getting the number one
overall pick this upcoming off season. Guess who recently had
thirteen screws inserted into their body. I will tell you

(34:17):
next broadcasting live from the studios of Fox Sports Radio,

(34:39):

site for detail's terms of conditions apply. Doug Gotli Show,
Fox Sports Radio a lot of stuff to get to.
We got good guests coming up. Matt Holiday is gonna
join us next hour. He's been joining us every day
of the World Series, and obviously today will be perfect

(35:00):
because we can react to last night's World Series game
and his skipper from this year, Joe Girardi was fired
by the Yankees, not a surprise, but it's interesting nonetheless,
because whoever takes over that Yankees, they're taking up a young,
loaded roster, and the Yankees now are have their uh
have their salary salaries in order to where they can

(35:22):
start going out in the next couple of years and
adding some other arms, adding some other pieces. In the meantime,
let's play game. This is game time side on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Let's bring in Dan Buyer. Doug. The
game we are playing today is guess who I've got

(35:44):
so many guests. Who's we just don't have enough time. Um,
let's start out with this one. Guess who's Dodger Jersey?
Tiger Woods war last night to Game two of the
World Series, and Tiger Woods was in attendance. One of
the So cow guy actually an Orange count a guy.
Really when you get to the heart of it, Um,
guess who? Uh Steve Garvey would just be too rife

(36:07):
in terms of the the you have to know about
Steve Garvey. Um, you're warm, you're getting you're warm. I
don't want to say warmer, but you're somewhat warm. Um
the sacks, No, it's gonna be that. Well, it's put
it this way. It's a throwback jersey. It's not a

(36:27):
current player. That's where you were warm Jackie Robinson. Yes,
it was Jackie Robinson at number forty two. Remember on
Tiger when the Masters and didn't take part in the
Jackie Robinson honoring. But now comes back twenty years later
and where's the Jackie Robinson jersey? Yeah? Are you do
you like Targer not like Target? We don't know each
other well enough to know, are you No? I am

(36:48):
I appreciate Yes, I am? I guess I would be
pro Tiger. I wasn't a huge Tiger fan, but I
just greatly appreciate the magnificent run that he had and
just how while he played the game and the time.
I'm pro Tiger. I just life is better in Tiger Woods,
just playing golf at a high level. And um, yeah,
he's also one of those guys I know, you know,

(37:09):
we take we take glee in people's downfalls in this
in this world whatever. I think it's remarkable about Tigers.
So few people. It's like Lebron James have been We've
been told they were great. From the time you know
he was in Amba. We thought we were told he
was gonna be great, and he lived up to that.
He became the greatest golfer of the modern era. So anyway,
I'm pro Tiger. I wanted to come back. Guess who

(37:30):
had thirteen screws inserted in them recently? Well, I got
a screw loose, Uh thirteen screws screws? Uh, Well somebody
had to Gordon Hayward. Nope, Ah, the answer would be
Aaron Rodgers walk us through what happening. And we've all
seen the team, but I want to make you relive

(37:52):
this Yeah, I rolled out to my right, I threw
the ball and I got tackled and kind of slammed
on the ground. But I'm good enough. Thirteen years later
and here I am. That was Rogers to Conan in
an episode that will air tonight's on TBS, thirteen screws
for that broken collar. Bo. Wow, that that sounds really
thirteen screws sounds really painful. But here's the way I
look at it. I got lots of dudes, lots of

(38:14):
dudes I know who are in uh the medical um
medical device area of expertise, to make a lot of
money on that. And so somewhere in l A where
I'm sure he hadn't had it done right, somewhere in
l A there was some farmers. There's some sales rep
who was in there during this two in the surgery,
and he's texting his boys, going, screws are going. First

(38:37):
of all, I'm making money right, which means I get
to take more doctors out and and get that right
off sushi okay, and my screws are in Aaron Rodgers, Yeah, yessu.
Doug in the NBA returns to their old home tonight,
old home tonight. Uh, Dwight Howard. No, he's got a

(39:01):
bunch of old homes. That was that was my first thought.
I'm kind of tricking you with some of these because
Paul George played the Pacers last night, got foul trouble.
The answer would be the Milwaukee Bucks. They are playing
at the Mecca tonight. They're old home up until hosting
the Boston Celtics Bucks of their fiftieth anniversary season, playing
a game at their old home. How about this from

(39:23):
Kyrie early? Okay, here we go. I'm all about safety. So, um,
see how it is on my knees? Yeah, there is
on everyone's bodies. I know that's pretty old at court. Um,
it looks like it's fresh paint as well. So I'm
just gonna do my assessment and go from there. Yeah yeah,
to me three steps to realize that this is not

(39:45):
the same NBA quid that I'm used to playing on.
So we'll see what's up. So in that twenty three
second exchange, Kyrie thought he was playing on a thirty
year old court and then yeah, and then then realized
that it was just in new paints cover and he
just felt that you would add on Oh yeah, I
knew three steps. Yeah, yeah, I knew that. I knew that. Yeah,
I totally knew that. I knew that. Uh huh, yeah,

(40:07):
that's eat not a bad bad look. But this all
like the Mecca is right next to the arena that
they actually played, which is right next to the new
arena which they're building, which is going to be spectacular. Uh.
The the guys that that owned that came over from
Medisine Square Garden, And I'm telling you, the Bucks are
in great shape for the future, not just because they
got Jonas, but because they've kept the arena downtown, they

(40:27):
kept track with history. Like I'm actually seriously fired up
about about the Bucks, especially if they can if they
can resign Jonas when his contract extension comes. Should also
be noted, Doug. Game five of the Playoffs, I saw
Dr Jay's last game at the Mecca in Milwaukee, and
I don't know if you know, I was born in
Milwaukee white Fish Bay, of course, and my we my
they played a Marquette played at the Mecca then and

(40:50):
my dad's team played on campus but played a couple
of games of the Men this game time. I actually
have a great story I want to get to as
far as that's concerned. But up next Cam Newton and
Colin Kaepernick. Closer than you think this is Doug Gotlip Show,

(41:11):
Boom one Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
On that high off a big game last night. Right,
you're just kind of buzzing. Do you ever get that,
like you invest in a game like this happened last
Saturday night? For example, Right Saturday night, I'm watching games
and I kind of cleared out my schedule for this

(41:32):
epic sports watching night. Like alright, honey, listen, Okay, I
got my son's baseball practice. My daughters are riding my sons,
like canna go to the beach, gonna go to the
Beach's gonna go to go to the beach. All right,
all right, it's get a bunch of food. It cook
some food, like four thirty West Coast time, four thirty
East Coast time, seven thirty. Like what I need is
nothing from any of you. Okay, I love you all.

(41:55):
I'm still kind of here. But my mentally, my mentally,
my game is in TVs TV Land. Right, because we
had Penn State, Michigan, we had the end of Oklahoma,
Kansas State, we had notre Dame USC and we had,
uh game was at five. We've got five or seven
game five right, five of the in the game seven

(42:16):
excuse me, game seven of the a LCS in Houston, right,
All those things were going on at once. It was sports,
sports Nirvana, sports Travanna, and yet all the games were blots.
I mean, I mean, Oklahoma came back and beat Kansas State,
but the Notre Dame game was a blowout. The Penn

(42:37):
State game was a blowout, and Houston blew out the
New York Yankees. So there's a level investment, and so
you still feel like, Okay, cool, I got to watch
these events, but not like last night, like last night,
and I want to get to a Lonzo ball and
the Lakers beating the Wizards last night, but uh last night,
I like, you invest eleven innings in a baseball game,

(43:00):
eleven innings, and you want to reap some sort of reward, like,
all right, here's what we got. They actually got to
like justin Verlandard did not pitch poorly and even like
you can't tell me pitch if you give up two
hits and they just have it was almost it was
you know what it was like that was how Nolan

(43:21):
Ryan used to pitch. Nolan Ryan I would always have
a bad win loss record, and the big reason why
I was he's prone to give up the long ball.
And Justin Verlander is also we talked about this before
the game, did we not that the one kind of
I know people are hitting more home runs, but Verlandard
also given up I think twenties seven home runs on
the season, thirty going back to last year when he

(43:42):
was with Detroit, but only gave up two hits to
her home runs. So they get to ver Lander three
one going into the eighth the Yet the Dodgers had
the best bullpen going in Major League Baseball and oh
and leading after the ninth. Going into the ninth inning,
there are up two runs in the one run the
nine and uh and they end up giving up a

(44:05):
home run in the ninth. Then the Astros have back
to back Jackson the tenth or down two runs, You're like,
well that's over. Nope, Dodgers come back, played two runs.
Then the Astros scored two more runs in the eleventh inning.
You think the Dodgers have done then nope, they hit
a home run and ya c L. Pweek, who had
previously hit a solo home run. It's part of the comeback.

(44:27):
Steps into steps into the batter's box, and you're like,
all right, this is pweak. He's gonna hit squeak madness,
He's gonna hit another one. He does, and he strikes
out twice. Actually because really the check swing with with
on to two counts, that was strike three, right, any
other game, any other place that strike three, It was
not regardless of which. Just on that on that post

(44:51):
incredible sports game. High right, you just like I want
to talk about are good? We'll allow you to do so.
Eight seven seven nine On and Fox. Matt Holiday of
the Yankees Um will join us at half past the hour,
asked him about last night, also asked him why Joe
Girardi was fired. Alc gogil Tria joined us next hour,

(45:11):
so too will former Yankee and Mlbyond Fox analyst Nick Swisher.
He'll join the show. So we got we got you
cover football, We got your toast, you get a football.
There is Thursday Night Football tonight. The Ravens who stink,
And it's just a weird like of all the things
Ravens being bad and being bad on defense, they have

(45:31):
all kinds of injuries. But Flacco hasn't been good. He
has not been the same since the A c L injury.
He has not been the same really since the Super Bowl.
Average Joe flacckle. They need to they need playoff Joe Flacco.
But the Ravens are bad and they're taking on a
Dolphins team which I don't think is as good as
their record. But regardless, now they have Matt Moore as

(45:53):
quarterback and have more plays well tonight and they win.
I just I don't think you'd go back to Jay Cutler.
And I guess the question becomes, if you're Jake Cutler,
how happy would you be coming back in being the backup?
All Right? More in that upcoming in fifteen. Um. We
reacted yesterday to Cam Newton's ill fated another ill fated

(46:17):
press conference, and he's taken questions. He was up there
for nine minutes and apparently this was the question that
caused him to walk out early. And big plays, big
chunk plays, good good get to that energy. I think
that you're talking about does this offense and I know
you had had several at Detroit, New England. Do you

(46:39):
think you guys have the wherewithal to do that consistently
weekend and weekend. Thanks question you probably did, Like I don't.
Does anybody really get what happened there? I don't know.
Look at the guys that are quarterbacks in this league

(47:01):
and they have a lot of things in common, but
one of it is like you're kind of the team spokesperson, right,
this is kind of part of the job. And you know, um,
I tell people all the time, I'm not a big drinker, no,
but I can drink like it's not because and I've
never understood the like, oh you're pennyways you can't hold

(47:22):
your booze like I don't really know why being able
to drink lots of alcohol somehow makes you more of
a man, like I'm really really but I can. I
can hold my own and when I drink, I'm happy.
I'm just I'm gonna super speak. And and it's not
a conscious thing. I know. It's like, well, on radio,
you're trying to be somebody, you know, but generally you

(47:43):
ask people like, who you are when you drink is
who you really are? Correct well, by my estimation, who
you are during times of stress, he's also who you
really are. And Kimden is not playing well now he's
He's also not helped out by the fact that his

(48:05):
star tight end Greg Olsen, who Olsen does a lot
of a lot of things, but one of the things
he does is he takes a ton of pressure off
him in the media. You know, Olson has done media stuff. Whatever.
He answered that questions, but so now he's kind of
left out an island. You're not going to Kelvin Benjamin
for Q and A. H. You're not going to a
rookie running back for Q and A. You're going to
the quarterback. And I don't know how many times we

(48:27):
have to see him handle himself poorly in a press
conference to understand he's just not good at this. I've
heard people say, like, well he's immature. Like now, dude,
once you get to be like twenty eight, like that's
kind of who you are, you're not gonna suddenly have
It's not like like I didn't grow I stayed back
in eighth grade. I was a late bloomer. Like I
didn't grow us five ft tall first time I graduated

(48:50):
eighth grade. When I entered high school fifteen months later,
I was like five t like a massive gross spurt
like that. You can grow late you can mature late,
but you know what, you don't. You don't mature as
a human being, like like Canaden's gonna go home and
suddenly like aha, moment, Hey, you know what, I really
screwed up the postgame press conference of the Super Bowl,

(49:12):
and then the press conference front of my locker two
days later, and then the deal with the female reporter,
to which I clowned her because she tried to use
some football terminology, and then I walked out, like you
like these things. This is who he is, and it's
it's the crazy part about the Kaepernick thing that no

(49:32):
one seems to remember or recalls. We're so caught up
in cap with the flag protests, which I'm not going
to dispute. That's a portion of reasons he doesn't have
a job. But we forget the reason he lost his
job to begin with was he wasn't good at these
sorts of things. He hasn't been good at these sorts
of things since he decided to protest, and he wasn't

(49:52):
great in terms of his interaction with teammates, Like this
is all kind of part of the job. And look,
I'm a huge Aaron Rodgers fan, and I know that
Aaron Rodgers can be kind of terse and can be defensive,
but what he doesn't do is walk out. What he

(50:13):
doesn't do is humiliate a female reporter. What he doesn't
do is shut down. When he plays poorly, he may
he may look at you sideways, he may hold a
grudge that he may not be trusting of you. But
when he can when you conduct an interview, he's a professional.
He's a CEO, he's a spokesperson for the team. And

(50:36):
there's a lot more to uh, There's there's a lot
more of Cap in Cam than there is even Roethlisberger
in camp. People have always said, like Cam's just black
Roethlisberger right takes a bunch of hits mobile, huge arm
better downfield, Like yeah, And I'm not I don't think
Ben's the greatest guy in the world. And I think

(50:59):
he's kind of full of you know what between the
retired stuff and the aug shock stuff, Like I don't
think that's really who Ben is? He Right here, I've
I've called Ben Roethlisberger searching for a compliment. Guy he is,
but he knows how to handle this deal, and he knows,
for the most part, how to handle teammates. And by

(51:19):
the way, if there's something that leads to the downfall
of Ben Roethlisberger, everyone said in Pittsburgh they got a
lot of young egos, and he's not really doesn't really understand,
he's not really communicating with them. Like far, I've always
did a great job of relating to everybody. So what
what has a tendency? It's it's interesting. I talked to
a GM last week or two weeks before and we

(51:43):
were talking about and I mentioned this before, about how
why so many guys why a quarterbacks a hard position
to evaluate? And he's like, well, because so many positions
in the NFL are necked down, right, Like I don't
take a ton of brains to play. They don't really
care about smart defense events see ball, hit ball, But

(52:03):
neck up positions middle linebacker, right, you call the defenses,
you gotta be somewhat cerebral quarterback and neck up in
terms of quarterback isn't just reading the defense. It's also
human relationship, personal relationships speaking. Uh, there's just a lot

(52:23):
more to It's a lot like and we're gonna talk
with holiday about me manager of the Yankees, Like the
manager of the Yankees is not like being a manager
for any other team. You have your own show. You
got a pre and post interview, different interactions, you know,
it's different relationship with the owner, like, oh this stuff
is different. Well, the position of quarterback is different. And
there's a lot of camp a cap in cam right,

(52:48):
like Captain Cam not terribly accurate Captain Cam. They've always
been so much further along athletically than all of their
contemporaries and high school and college. And I know the
cap cam cap had to evolve when he was set
in the vat. I understand all that, but that there
were there are parts of the fundamentals of how they
played the position that got glossed over because they were

(53:10):
just studs at a young age. There are things they
had god given ability that other people didn't have, that
they didn't have to learn, and now they have to.
You can't go back and learn it. We see this
in every sport, but the human interaction thing relating to teammates,
handling reporters. You keep butchering this thing, and all of

(53:34):
a sudden, now instead of looking at your talent and
making excuses for it and saying, wow, it's the line, well,
it's the play colleague. Well, it's the fact he doesn't
have his tight end. You started to say, Well, maybe
it's Cam Newton um an interesting Thursday night football game tonight.

(53:59):
If you're the Raves and you lose at home to
a backup quarterback, what's next. We'll discuss that. But first
he needed some great talent for your business. But short
on time, you don't get lost in the huge stack
of resumes and you don't want to get those. You

(54:21):
don't want to go like search out some website that
may or may not give you somebody who's the right
guy for the job. Make it easy on yourself, use
zip recruiter. With zip recruiter, you can post your job
to over a hunter of the webs leading job boards,
which is one click, so you can rest easy knowing
your job is being seen by the right candidates. There's
no wonder percent of employers who post on zip recruiter

gotta caution people about going crazy about Alonzo ball last

(56:02):
night and the Lakers being the Wizards. Remember the Wizards
aren't fully healthy, don't have Mark Keith Morris back just yet.
Um and the Lakers were at home. But look, it's
a big win for the Lakers, who had we hadn't
played well. Brandon Ingram played better than he had been
playing Alonzo ball. I guess it rebounded while I passed,
but I didn't shoot the ball particularly well at all,
but either did John Wall john Wall seven two. That's good.

(56:24):
That's good enough to get you beat any day, which
it did. And just like the problem with the NBA's
you just can't get caught watching one game, right, Like,
you watch one game and they turn around they play
another the very very next day. It's just really hard
to do. Games are more spaced out now. But like, well,
let's see, like Lakers have Toronto coming in, another playoff

(56:44):
team with with a pretty good backcourt, so we'll see Wizards.
On the other hand, now they go up and they
don't play until Friday. They play Golden State. So you
can build narratives based upon several games more than just
on one game on one game that makes any sort
of sense to you. NFL is different. Every game does

(57:05):
seem to matter a little bit more. I mean, look,
we can't go crazy over games. But uh, and and
there have been teams off to awful starts that are
pretty good teams. Ravens are three and four in the season.
There favored at home against the Matt Moore lad Matt
Moore led Dolphin team. Remember the Ravens might be three

(57:26):
and four, but they've lost four their last five. Only
when was over the Raiders, an impressive one on the road.
But you lose to the Vikings and the backup quarterback.
You lose to the Bears at home. Embarrassed by the
Steelers and embarrassed by the Jaguars when they played in London.
And remember they have the Titans on the road, and

(57:47):
I will grant you that there's no Aaron Rodgers, but
still the Packers on the road. Two straight road games
to come following this one, before you get the Texans
at home. Look when they beat the Bengals. The Bengals
had Bengals, remember, had such a bad offense, they fired
their offensive coordinator and they beat the Browns, which is

(58:08):
not you know, and even beating the Raiders, which sounds
like a good win. Are the Raiders really good honestly?
I know, reputation wise, And David Carr, Remember the Raiders
are three and four in the season, so they have
um they have zero wins over teams with a five

(58:30):
or above records. Now one right, Browns having won Bengals
are two and four Raiders are three and four, and
of course Derek Carr didn't even play in the Raids.
The game went over the Raiders. They beat an E. J.
Manuel led Oakland Raider team. So now you get a
Matt more like, you can't get any better set up

(58:53):
you play. You play a Matt Moore led Dolphins team
at home on Thursday night. Then you get extra time
to prepare for the Titans, the Titans who just survived
the Cleveland Browns. Then you take on an Aaron Rodgers
less Green Bay Packers. This should be a stretch where
you win three in a row, or you win two
out of three. But bad are they bad? Just not

(59:14):
a good football team? Now they got a ton of injuries,
but they're not a good football team. And the stats
really tell a ton of the story. Yes rhymes if
you're the Ravens. Where are you at with Joe Flacco?
I mean, with the way quarterbacks are now? I mean
he's only thirty two, he's under contracts for several more years,

(59:38):
so it's not like they're coming up on the end
of a contract where they can just come I see,
most they mostly guaranteed money was is up front. The
first couple of years by the way they are just
you know, the Dolphins have the fewest passing yards of
anybody in the league. The Ravens have the third fewest
passing yards of anybody league. But the Ravens have I believe,
the lowest passing yards per attempt by a good margin.

(01:00:02):
But Ravens, the Ravens on per attempt five point three
yards in comparison Kansas City, known as the dump off
King Alex Smith eight point seven yards. But so where
are you at if you're the Ravens, like you said,
with Kansas City, you just mentioned they drafted Patrick Mahomes
in the first round this past right, And we're looking

(01:00:24):
at all these other teams, whether it's Big Ben and
him constantly hinting at retirement, Eli Manning and the Giants
are disaster. Philip Rivers and the Chargers have started to
turn it around. But even Philip Rivers looks like he's
way on the downside of his career as opposed to
closer to his prime. I mean, we see some of
these older quarterbacks, much older than Flacco, but Flacco looks

(01:00:45):
like is he somehow going to have a resurgence in
his career at like thirty four, Like you have to
be thinking long term. If you're the Ravens at this point,
you should be thinking long term. And and and look,
I'll credit the obviously knew sim has found a way
to remake this team ten times over. Right, they've done
a really good job there. He's a good general manager.

(01:01:07):
And injuries play a huge factor into why they've been
so bad but not good, And there doesn't appear to
be a plan in place right when Ryan Mallett you're
back up, and nobody has faith in Ryan Mallett, but
you lose Terrence west Wallace has been hurt, Macklin has
been heard, Pairman is hurt. Benjamin Watson of course out,

(01:01:30):
Max Williams out like they got some they got some
injury issues. And to his credit, we also don't know
how injured Flacco. Maybe that that back thing, we never
really kind of figured out exactly what caused that, how
bad it was since he has sort of been playing,
So maybe that's something that's a lot more debilitating than

(01:01:52):
we really know. But it just sort of seems like
Flacco's starting to already we like we've already seen the
best of Joe Flacco. I don't know if he's getting
any better than what we've already seen. No. I mean, look,
he's thrown for a hundred and eighty and a hundred
eighties six in back to back losses. Right, It's one
thing to throw for a hundred eighty and six if
you win, won the game, kept the ball on the ground.

(01:02:15):
But when you're losing, that's when you usually pick put
up big numbers. He has not. The thing about Flacco
I always thought was like people freaked out about Flacco
when he won the Super Bowl, But he's kind of
been the same guy every year. He always has about,
you know, twelve to fifteen interceptions, he always has around
you know, twenty five touchdown passes. His quarterback ratings somewhere

(01:02:37):
in the mid to upper eighties or mid eighties. Right,
he's fine, He's fine, But now he's less than fine.
He's struggling to carry them because they don't have a defense.
Let me also say this, I I heard Calherd say
um that he thinks the Patriots will be okay even

(01:02:58):
though they're gonna they lost one high tower for the
remainder of the season. Who's their signal caller on defense?
Tony Romo told me this a long time ago when
he was in Dallas. We were at the super Bowl
in Dallas. Here was that five years ago, maybe six
years ago? Read the super Bowl in Dallas. Have a
uh House of Blues. And I've always liked Romo. He's

(01:03:22):
always been a good dude. He's a huge basketball fan,
big Wisconsin basketball fan, but just basketball fan in general.
We start talking Hoop and I started asking him about,
you know, quarterbacks and how you tell who's really any
good and he's like, look, man, it doesn't matter how
the good quarterbacks. If you're a really good quarterback regards
to your team, you can get him kind of close
to the playoffs about five, He's like, but no one

(01:03:43):
really wins in this league unless you have a top
ten defense. And so while the numbers are really good
for Tom Brady's passing for more yards, part of it
is the defense has been so bad. They have more possessions,
they have to throw the ball more, but you lose
your You're probably most important player defensively, you already don't

(01:04:06):
have a pass rush, and your defensive backfield, with the
exception of taking on Atlanta and maybe against the Jets,
has been confused. Yeah, I don't know who's gonna win
the a f C, but it sure doesn't feel like
it's going to be the Patriots just because of health.
You lose uh Edelman on one side and you lose
High Tower on the other. It's tough. Matt Holiday has

(01:04:31):
been you know, he's played for a couple of catchers
now played from Athenie who didn't have any any experience.
We took over obviously playing for Tony the Russa and
just got done playing for Joe Girardi by Joe Girardi
get fired. And it wasn't a surprise, But was it
like to play for Joe Girardi when everybody thought he'd
be out? Matt Holiday, seven time All Star, four time

(01:04:53):
Silver Slugger is gonna join us after we find out
what's going on from Dan Buyer, What do you got Dan? Guys?
Week Gates in the NFL season starts tonight in Baltimore
Dolphins and Ravens at eight twenty five Eastern time, New
England Patriots. Has Doug just mentioned a little while ago,
Delta Big Blow is lonebacker Dante Hi Tower is gonna
miss the rest of the year with a torn pectoral muscle.
An interesting week of the NFL six teams on by

(01:05:15):
You've got the thirst to night affair tonight. You also
have a London game featuring the Vikings and Browns. Vikings
quarterback Sam Bradford send out practice again today because of
a sore name, but Minnesota could be getting Stefon Digs
back for the game, practicing today despite a growing the
injury well, the Browns won't have defensive end Miles Garrett,
the first overall pick, has a concussion and won't even
travel with the team to London. Cowboys side kicker Mike

(01:05:37):
Nugent to take the spot of injured kicker Dan Bailey.
Broncos have a Monday Night affair with the Chiefs. Wide
receiver Emmanuel Sanders didn't practice today because of a sprained
ankle suffered a couple of weeks ago. As Doug mentioned,
the Yankees won't bring back manager Joe Girardi back for
teen done after ten years, including a World Series in
two thousand nine, and tonight in the NBA, the Milwaukee

(01:05:57):
Bucks will host the Boston Celtics, not at the Bride
the Center, but at the Buck's old home that they
had for twenty years from that's at the Mecca just
next door in Milwaukee. Should be an interesting affair tonight,
Doug is the Bucks celebrate their fiftieth anniversary season. Love
the Bucks, Love the Bucks. Um, m Matt Holiday joins us. Now,

(01:06:22):
he's joined us every day here getting ready for World
Series Games one and Game two. And uh, you know, look,
let's let's start with the game. We'll get to the
Girardi news and your reaction to it. Matt Holiday joined
us of the Uh still, I guess technically of the
New York Yankees. One year deal with the Yankees obviously expires, right,
Can I introduce you as as of the Yankees? That? Okay, yeah,

(01:06:44):
that's fine. I don't I don't know. Yeah, we're unemployed.
I don't know, unemployed, unemployed, seven time All Star Matt
Holiday joining us. All right, so just quickly, when I
say Game two of the World Series, what do you say? Uh? Surprising?
And I thought it was crazy. Um, it kind of

(01:07:07):
went as I thought it would go early and then
kind of as the game went on it Uh, they
were able to get to some bullpen pitchers that you
know that ended up giving up some homers and and
uh so back and forth, really surprised when that Houston
was able to kind of come back when the Dodgers

(01:07:27):
tied it. That's a that's a tough, tough place and
Dodger Stadium when the home team comes back like that
and gets it back tied going into extra innings, I
thought that that really the Dodgers would win that game
once they tied it up in extreme things, But you know,
hats off to the Astros. They found a way to
get two more runners. But that's uh, that's it was.

(01:07:48):
I was a bit surprised if they were to pull
that out. That's the best, the most exciting World Series
game I can remember since the one you got hurt
in in two thousand and eleven. Right, you got picked
off a third base and you heard your wrist and
you guys are down to your last strike twice against
the Rangers. But you have a much better kind of
almanac in your head for World Series games, baseball moments.

(01:08:11):
We're just you know, like I don't want to be
hyperbole and go like, greatest game I've ever seen, but
that's about as exciting as I can remember a World
Series game being. Yeah, I mean, I guess the Joe
Carter walk off home run comes to mind, and that
was a long time ago, but um, you know, I think, yeah,
I mean, that's it's definitely the one and the most
most recently that as far as back and forth, and

(01:08:33):
uh kind of had a bunch of different things go
on and then good hitting, good pitching. Um, I thought
it was very entertaining. Okay, So explain to me that
the home run thing, right, Like, you can tell me
that guys, are they stopped hitting? You know, stop the
idea Money's in the air, right, That's what Josh Donaldson says.
Money's in the air, not on the ground. Stop hitting

(01:08:55):
the top half of the baseball, hit the bottom half
of the baseball, in the middle of the baseball, and
we're changing our swing path and all that sounds great,
But dude, eight home runs last night, Like this is
two thousand seventeen baseball. Are the players used? Are the
balls uosed? Like what he's going on? You know, I
think it's I don't know why. I mean, if we

(01:09:15):
have the baseballs from this year and we have the
baseballs from the past, I mean, shouldn't we have somebody check.
I mean, surely there's somebody that's that's smart enough to
go in and see if there's you know, differences. I
don't see why anybody can't figure that out if there is.
Mean to me, I think that it's more of a
fundamental philosophy change. And I think guys are really um

(01:09:37):
trying to figure out, like you said, how to hit
the ball in the air, and with all the defensive
metrics and the shifts and and where they're playing the infielders, uh,
there is not a lot of hits to be had
on the ground. And that's just kind of the way
it is now. And so I think guys up and
down the lineup are are changing their philosophy to to
where you even have little guys that are trying to

(01:09:58):
hit the ball in the air. Yeah, but like like
in a bath camball, Like if you give me a basketball,
I can feel it and be like, all right, the
sums off of this ball, like it's not seven to
nine pounds or doesn't have low on air high idea.
Like I've I've had a basketball in my hands, you know,
most of my life. I can kind of tell you right,
like I can tell you if a basketball hoop is
not ten feet I can take a look at and
go like I feel like it's an in short, so

(01:10:19):
you've been doing this a long time. Do the baseball's
feel or fly off of bats differently this year in
your opinion than they had in the past? You know,
I don't. I don't think so. I didn't. Really, I
don't notice it when I pick it up. Um, I don't.
I don't know. It's one of those things where I think,
if it is, it's so small as far as what

(01:10:40):
I can tell that that I mean, I I can't
really tell a big difference. And like I said, I
don't understand. I mean, like, isn't there people out there
that could could do an experiment and figure out if
they're wound tighter or I mean, I don't know. I
think there's people smart as than either. They can tell
you for sure one way or the other if the
balls aren't different or juice or high or whatever people

(01:11:00):
are claiming. I know Kaiko said that he thought they were.
I don't know. Um, I don't know that MLB would
have I guess if they want more home runs to
more entertainment, I don't. I don't know that what the
motivation behind making the ball, you know, harder or tighter.
I guess that would be it, But um, I think

(01:11:21):
it has more to do with with the velocity and
the guys that are fundamentally trying to hit the ball
in the air and guys are throwing high, and you know,
that's the strategy walk and hit home runs and don't
give up out and don't hit the ball on the ground.
And I think that that's why you see more strikeouts
and you see more home rooms. Yeah, last last night
the example, not as many strikeouts as the night before,

(01:11:43):
but still nineteen combined strikeouts and we had the eight
combined home runs, which is the world Series record. Okay,
let's let's get to what Dave Roberts did. Like for
people who don't know, your dad, longtime baseball baseball coach,
college baseball coach, UM, and your brother, of course, is
currently the baseball coach at at Oklahoma State. I'm my
alma mater, Um, Matt Holiday joining us in the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Um, Rich Hill taking Rich Hill out in

(01:12:06):
the fourth? You okay with that? Um? Shoot, you know
the hind side twenty I I thought it was a
little early, Um, but that's kind of been their strategy,
and I think that that's their philosophy as an organization
is don't let to tee other team face the picture
of the third time to the line up. And he's
done that to Rich Hill the entire postseason and a

(01:12:27):
lot of the regular seas. And I think he's done
that to a lot of a lot of the starters
outside of Clayton, Carchell and starts. Now, I think that's
their strategy. And sometimes I'm not your as a pitch
in three weeks and and all of a sudden, you
become very vulnerable to being second guest. And and something
that works eight out of ten times or nine out

(01:12:49):
a ten times comes back and bites you in the
butt because you have to pitch guys that you know
you don't necessarily want the game to come down on.
You know, whether you win or lose by those guys sit,
Oh all right, well Matt, Matt, we lost Matt in

(01:13:09):
in a sun spot. Well, I can tell you what
basically the essence of what he's saying is like, Look,
once you go to the bullpen, you start. Now of
a sudden, it's the Watson's, it's the Striplings, it's the
Josh Fields, it's the it's the Brennan McCarthy's you start
pitching instead of just hey have your starter go to
Kenton my Ada from my ETA, you go tomorrow to

(01:13:30):
to Jansen and then you drive home safely. I actually
think that's the part of the Roberts moves. Everybody's going
crazy about relieving, taking rich hell out and using Kenley
Jansen for two innings, but it was more, you know,
he only Watson throws one pitch and Stripling comes in,
throws four pitches, four balls, and he gets taken out.

(01:13:53):
That may be more than anything through the Dodgers kind
of bullpen out of whack, out of the rhythm. Is
that is that fair, Matt, that that used. It's it's
not pulling Hill from my Ada. It's Watson and Strippling going,
you know, throwing combined five pitches and then handing it
off tomorrow and then maybe pulling Moral a little bit early.
That that really could be more cause for criticism. Yeah,

(01:14:15):
I think so. As I said I think that, uh,
you you end up with guys that you don't want
the game de side of it on the mound and
extra innings because you use strippling for you know, very
little time, and you use some of these guys. Um,
And like I said, it works a lot, but when
you wind up an extra inning since where it comes
back to bite you. And so um, there's not a

(01:14:37):
ton of extreme games. But um, you know, like I said,
I don't even probably maybe do it just a little
bit different. But I think for the most part, strategy
and that's their strategy as as a team is you know,
if the starter get two times through the order successfully,
then start going to the bullpen. And so that's that's
been there their m O and and sometimes you know,

(01:14:58):
it doesn't work um every time. And that's what happened
last night. I had to get to Jansen. I mean,
you gusually told me like Jansen, you made Jansen had
to be unhittable, and suddenly he was hitable. Was it
because of the length of his appearance or could it
be because maybe maybe maybe the basketball guy had it right.
You shouldn't have let him be let his stuff be
seen two days in a row. Um, I think he

(01:15:19):
made a mistake. And like all pictures, he's vulnerable when
he leaves a ball in the mold the play and
he made a you know, an O two pitch. He
pretty much was trying to go up and end and
he left it kind of spinning middle and it was
ninety two instead of ninety five or six, which is
you know, um, a lot of his pitches are and
you know, he made a mistake and the guy made
him pay. On a hot night. I think that that

(01:15:40):
ball doesn't go over the fence at Dodger Stadium on
most nights, but I think in that situation it does,
and and he uh, and he paid for it. But
I still think he's incredibly um tough to hit. And
I don't think it's a big deal as far as
going forward. It's not gonna affect him. But that the
one pitched to Korea that he gave up the RBI

(01:16:03):
the cutter that you know, he chops up the middle
and it's a fast enfield and and he snuck one through.
But you know, overall, I think, you know, he only
gave up one UM major, major, major hit and and
that was the home round that that tied the game.
But um, I don't think that that's any cause for concernment.
Before all right, let's ask you the question that everybody

(01:16:23):
wants to know the answer to, why was d fire?
You know, I think when it comes down to it. Um,
I think it had to have been some sort of
personality difference or philosophy philosophy difference between he and Brian
and and maybe to some extent the whole front office
as far as analytic at to some extent, I would

(01:16:44):
say that that would be the only thing that I
can think of, because as far as on the field,
and and you know, the products that they received this
year out of a really young team and somet a
team that people you know, didn't expect to do much. UM,
I thought he handled it really well. I thought he
handled the young as really well. I thought managed um
really well. And so for me, I would guess, um,

(01:17:07):
if I had to guess, I don't know anything specific
because we're not privy to to implement, you know, two
meetings between front office and manager and staff. But you know,
I think the writings on the wall that there was
definitely a personality or philosophy philosophy difference, and moving forward
with how they're going to run the team um as

(01:17:28):
far as analytics go, or what they want out of
their manager going forward. Okay, so a couple of different things.
One like he had said when he was asked about
the Yankees future he he used Yankees third person, and
he said, They're like, so this tell me if I'm wrong.
This wasn't It's not a surprise to anybody who was
around the organization, Right, Yeah, I think that you're right

(01:17:50):
on that. I think that that was one of the
red flags I thought were listening to sort of all
the talk leading up to this, is that, you know,
if if Joe's your guy, and the job that he
did the farm was managing this team and being one
game away from the World Series, and the team wasn't
expected to to you know, to necessarily be a contender

(01:18:11):
for winning the World Series. Um for for that, for
him to continue to talk in Yankee third person, I thought, um,
or them not to make a decision and a contract sooner,
I thought was a little bit strange and sort of
a red flag for a potential change, and that, um,
you know, at that point, you would think that if
they had discussed the extension or or you know, had

(01:18:34):
but I think both parties probably you know, it had
kind of knew that that maybe this wasn't gonna fit anymore,
and and so um that was I was. I was.
I'll tell people, I was surprised by based on the
player on the field and how everything went, but not surprised,
and how things were sort of being talked about in

(01:18:54):
the last couple of weeks. And and like you said,
how Joe was addressing the team is in the third person. Uh,
last thing here, Okay, you Clint Hurdle took you guys
right to the World Series. When you're in Colorado. You
played for LaRussa, Uh Matheny, who I knew you related
to really well. You like LaRussa as well, but they're
all kind of different. This is a young team. This
is a great job opportunity for somebody because of that

(01:19:17):
young talent. And they're gonna have money to spend in
New York. So if Girardi is not good enough or
not their flavor, what's the type of manager you think
that's the best fit for that roster. You know, it's
interesting I haven't heard I've heard, you know, some in
house candidates, which I think Robbie Thompson, the bench coach,

(01:19:38):
is a really bright baseball guy and did a lot
of our advanced scouting meetings and and uh is really
a sharp guy. Been with the Yankees a long time.
I know he was close to the Steiner their family
and to George before he passed away. UM. But you know,
for me, I would think that they would be somebody
like Don Manningley or or somebody that has Yankee ties

(01:20:00):
that that has managed. Um, I haven't really heard anybody mentioned,
don you know at this point. But I know he's
got a job ready Minami and maybe he's happy there
and doesn't want to leave. But UM, I don't know.
I don't know if this is a team it's ready
to win the World Series. So I would be surprised
if if they hired somebody with no managerial experience, uh
to to to manage a team that's that's it's ready

(01:20:22):
done to win a World Series. And um, so I
don't know. I'm curious to see which direction they go
in and and you know whether they um surprise people
by bringing somebody down from the front office or or
you know, hiring a guy that's coaching currently in their
in their system. I know the Triple A manager Al
Fadrique has done a really good job. They've been very

(01:20:43):
successful in Triple A with their team, and he's he's uh,
he's a bright baseball guy. So I don't know, I
I would um, I'll be. Um. I'll be interested to see.
But you know, for me, the first name that jimp
to my head was dom Anningley. But I don't know anything. Um,
we'll we'll, we'll see what happens. Dodgers Astros tomorrow. We're

(01:21:04):
calling you tomorrow for for pregames. That cool. Yeah all right, dude,
thanks so we really appreciate you join us and and
Joyce as always, that's a Matt holiday out of work.
Seven time All Star, four time Silver Slugger, most recently
with the New York Yankees. What makes Carson Wentz so good?
Great Costell gave his thoughts to Colin Cowherd. Find out
if I agree. Next, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show

(01:21:30):
on Fox Sports Radio. Don't let the name fool you.

(01:21:56):
Let's play what did the Fox say and now every
day on the Doug Gallip shall we play you a
portion of a previous radio show, including Colin Coward having
Greg Cosell on saying this. What makes this kid really
better at this stage than many as his ability before
the snap of the ball and after the snap of

(01:22:17):
the ball. He is really good recognizing the defense. Sometimes
that changes, and he's really good at been reacting to that.
So he's very advanced and refined in those two areas.
All right, he's talking about Carson Wentz and what makes
him special as a quarterback. Look, Daniel Jeremiah said it,
there's a buzz around the league. Greg Cosell said it,

(01:22:38):
that there's something special. You've heard everybody said. It's like
like Howie Roseman um remembers signed Sam Bradford to an
extension after getting rid of Chip Kelly and then traded
up and drafted Carson Wentz. And you know what, if
you're gonna make that type of play, that's great, but
you better be right. Alie Roseman was right. Plus he
hired a coach who was unproven as a head coach

(01:23:01):
because he could be a really good kind of coordinator.
Guru be in the ear of the quarterback. It's all
worked new school versus old school. We told you this
was going to happen. Baseball has changed. How has become
a three point shooting contest? The NBA and Major League

(01:23:22):
Baseball are the same. Last night I proved it. Next
in the Doug Gotli Show, Fox Sports Radio. What up,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? What a game last night? Huh?
What a game? A game? What a game? With a game?

(01:23:43):
With a game? You know it's funny. Um. Ryan Music
just told me a story about his his pop, his dad,
and he said that, like his best day with his
dad as a kid was what my dad was never
like hey you can skip school, or like would buy
it if you pretended to be sick. Like he was

(01:24:06):
very on top of like you go to school because
that's your job when you're a kid. But when the
Angels won the World Series in two thousand two, he
woke us up early, my brother, my sister and I
and was like, guess what not going to school to
day because we're going to Disneyland for the World Series parade. Awesome? Yeah.
The only thing was was it fun? Was it fun? Oh? Yeah?

(01:24:27):
So so Disneyland World Series parade, you went on all
the rides and then you just kind of went over
to the parade as well, you know, or did you
go like steak out spots for the parade. It was
the reverse. So the parade was at like ten and
the ten or eleven in the morning for those guys
were fired up for that, by the way, so so
my head. So so we got there at like nine

(01:24:47):
or whatever when the park opened. Then we kind of
just hung out where we wanted to be for the parade,
and then when the parade was over, like eleven thirty,
because they kind of just come in and come right out,
then we ended up just going to all the rides
and it was basically empty for most of the day.
Are you going to answer that phone? I'll tell this
story here real quick. Um. It's funny you bring up
two thousand two, because two thousand two Game six was

(01:25:11):
one of the more exciting games I have ever watched
in Major League Baseball. People forget that, right that was
the Angels were down um I think five nothing heading
into the bottom of the seventh inning. Remember they had
the rally monkey, and they scored three in the bottom
of the seventh and three in the bottom of the eighth,
and then Troy Perceval came in and Uh and Uh

(01:25:32):
struck out rich Arelia and they got to win. To
come back from a five run deficit. Was the largest
in World Series history for elimination game. It was crazy.
That was the two thousand two World Series, so that
was one of the most that game. The two thousand
and eleven again another game, six game. Those were among

(01:25:56):
the Those are among the um the most exciting games
I've ever watched. What was different about last night was
analytics and baseball has told these guys to stop hitting groundballs.
Remember when we were kids. Two strikes, choke up and

(01:26:19):
just make contact. Put it in play. Put it in play.
That eight home runs last night. If you don't believe
that analytics have told guys to to change their swing
path to hit in the middle to bottom half, I
give you last night. I give you the stats for
the entire season. There are some weird things things to

(01:26:39):
go a bump of the night. The Dodgers don't usually
give up leads. They haven't given up the lead nine
no when leading it heading into the ninth dinning before
last night. But the home runs, that's baseball two thousand
sev al right, there are some stories, probably the two
or three teams that are most surprising in the NFL.

(01:27:00):
I would go in terms of they're good and people
didn't think they would be good. Right, I would go Eagles.
I did. Did people think the Eagles are gonna be
this good? Ye? Now, I would say Eagles were the first.
They have the best record in the NFL. I would
say Bills at four and two, UM, and then I

(01:27:22):
would probably say the l A Rams. L A Rams
are five and two on the season. They're three and
oh away from home. Alec Ogiltree of the Rams kind
of to join us year on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
And if you think about it, Alec, I mean like
Cooper cups to study holds on that one ball against Seattle,
and you know, things go the same way. You're six

(01:27:43):
and one. What's your reactions? Are you surprised by your
fast start? Oh? Well, thanks for having me. Uh No,
I'm not really surprised. I mean, like you said, the ball,
because all different ways at different moments of the game.
You know, all weeks we just practice on, you know,
being situational masters, and you know when when the time

(01:28:04):
comes to back that play. You know, we definitely try to,
you know, make sure we have the right mindset and
have everybody on the same page and you know, ready
for that moment to execute when when you need it,
and you know, to have your best. Coach always preaches,
you know, being your best and your best is required.
You know, the a couple of games that we did

(01:28:26):
lose right in it to win it, and you know,
but we did it, uh, and we didn't execute all
the ways to the end. But you know, the last
few weeks here, we've been playing really well and you
know it's definite credit to you know, everybody believing in
and the product that coach brought that to us and
you know, buying in and just you know, staying focused

(01:28:47):
on the main on the main goal and getting the
job done. Yeah. But look, I mean, honestly, all that
sounds good. We we were down at your guys training camp,
and I like McVeigh, everybody likes McVeigh, but you I mean,
like a young guy comes in and starts all this
kind of positivity talk. He's done, ball of energy, and
I know some of the guys that are vets like
you're probably like, all right, another coach. Whatever we'll we know,
we'll see was there a was there a moment to

(01:29:10):
which guys are like, you know what, this guy kind
of knows this stuff. Uh well, I mean I I
went against him, uh when he was at Washington, so
you know, I saw the work that he's done there.
And you know, guys, as some of the guys that
are older, you know, they knew the type of work
that he's done in Washington. And you know, his resonate
speaks for stuff. And he was young first year being

(01:29:31):
a head coach, so he hasn't a lot a lot
of learning still to do as far as a head coach.
But you know, uh, he came in man and you know,
I think you know when I other players Connor ball
On yesterday said the best you know, he's able to
articulate his message that you want to get to bust
the group of grown man so you know, for him,

(01:29:52):
and he did a great job of doing that. And
you know it really is ad didn't show. You know,
you thought he was older than what and what he is.
So you know what I say, him who who he is?
And you know, like I said, speaking that belief and
you know, everybody's just buying in you know, and you

(01:30:13):
have that. I don't care how or no you are.
You know you're gonna have the vols. So if you
have everybody that that buys and believes at the same mission,
Alcoogol Tree joining us in the Doug Gotli Show. You
know what's maybe most interesting and not discussed a ton
is that as good as you guys have been, the
defense is probably the true strength of this team. And

(01:30:36):
maybe it's because you didn't have Aaron Donald to start
the season. Maybe it's because, like Wade Phillips brings in
a totally new system, you guys haven't actually played your
best football yet. Defenses like there's still there's still kind
of feels like there's the next level to the defense.
Is that Is that a fair uh fair assessment of
what the defense has done and what's the possibility ahead.

(01:30:57):
That's definitely, uh a greater testiment. I mean, we you
have to play you know, a completely, a complete game,
you know, defensely I felt, I mean, I think we've
had some games where we showed that we can be
dominant and you know, I just said his last game
to get a shut out, you know, it just speaks

(01:31:18):
volume to everybody continue to you know, trust the process.
You know we did. Of course we didn't start out
how we wanted to start the season, you know, as
far as they in a top defense. But you know
it's coaches to tell us to keep believing, keep trusting,
to keep doing a little thing that you need to
do each and every day to get better. And you
know what I said, when you change, you know a

(01:31:41):
lot of stuff that goes around. There's definitely better learning curves.
And you know, I felt like we, uh we we
just continue to try to get better each and every day.
And you know with that, yeah, I mean it's like
I said, it's the sky's a limit for us. Um,
you know, we're definitely looking forward to the next the
next few a is here to you know, give ready

(01:32:01):
to keep keep building as a defense and as a
team as a whole. So you know, we're doing a
lot of great things right now. All right, listen, I
I understand you guys don't play this week. So most
guys week off, like ah, you chow at the house
or maybe be in l A. You go to World
Series game. But you got you got bigger things, right.
It's the it's the Florida Georgia game. Right, not supposed

(01:32:22):
to call it the cocktail party anymore. And and I
know that you're helping raise money to get back to Jacksonville.
But for for people who aren't familiar with the Florida
Georgia rivalry, what what's your best memory of this game?
My best memory was my last yet there when we
had Jarvis Jones. He's actually made a play at the

(01:32:44):
end of the game to cause a fumble and you
know he was able to win the game there. Um,
just it was just I mean because actually to do
to do that Jordan read that caught the ball was
actually my my man and I end up dropping coverage
and and you know Mr Taco and he he stayed me,
and you know, it's definitely just there was just a

(01:33:07):
choice on the elite that you know, I was there
able to toil it off and win the game like that, So,
you know else, probably one of the best memories I
had for sure. Yeah, of course, I know your brother
went to to U g A as well. Uh, part
of All State going all hands to get back to Jacksonville.
You and Kevin Carter of course played at Florida. But
look this dog team, this this boy was pretty good.

(01:33:28):
Now went up Notre Dame. Gotta win right now in
line to play uh play Alabama for SEC championship and
a chance to play for a for a for a
national championship. UM. Kind of interesting. Kirby Smart in his
second year. We've seen other guys in their second year. UM.
I'm wondering though, for you, a defensive guy and a
defensive coach taking over for Mark Rick, did you think

(01:33:50):
that it would hit, that it would click this early? Um?
I knew that he would do a tremendous job there.
I mean I was just remember recruiting days of coming
out of high school. Man. You know, he was one
of the one of the best recruis ever to do
it in my eyes. And uh so I definitely figured that,

(01:34:12):
you know, once he got his opportunity to, you know,
get his guys in there that you know he wasn't
playing with, you know, coach risk guys, and you know,
just get everybody in there you know that he wanted
to have in there. You know, I definitely thought that
he could do a tremendous job for for Georgiana. And
he's doing that. Man. You know, It's like I said,
it can happen down or could happened later a little

(01:34:34):
bit later, but you know, he's definitely happy and excited that.
But he's definitely changed the program around right now. Like
I said, with the All State thing, it's that's that's
gonna be fun doing that this weekend for sure. And
it's also it's it's gotta be good to go home,
not just when Georgia is good and Florida's down in Florida,
but the Rams being good too. Write like last year,

(01:34:56):
I mean're like, man, I don't want to show my
face of this thing now, like, oh, yeah, you guys
are awesome. Him, Hey have you seen have you seen
the video Sony Michelle's uh stef arm I didn't see
the stiff on him. I saw him when her Yeah
he trucked to do who who was he truck? He
ran over? Right? Yeah, I saw him when he ran

(01:35:18):
him over, and you know I saw, uh, what's the
other back? I got the other back name that he
jumped over and uh, they just they they're doing Like
I said, many, I think we have the best running
back group in the nation. You know, as as far
as the two times with Chols and Sony and then
you're bringing something other young guys that come in there

(01:35:40):
and spare them. So, you know, I think they've they've
done a really great job of just you know, keeping
that position of Donald positions, you know, and everybody's like
I said, they bought into like like Kirby was selling them.
And you know, and when you do that, you have
you had, you tend to have great teams, and you
know that definitely there're gonna they're definitely gonna be there

(01:36:02):
for the running and you know, hopefully they take care
of business this weekend and just keep pushing towards for sure.
When was the last time you got truck like that?
Last time I got truck like that? Does happen? And
they does, even guys like you, It does happen. It
definitely happens. It definitely happens. I don't know last time
I like that. I'm trying. I can't remember. Okay, maybe

(01:36:26):
maybe here's here's here's sell off a cup of tackles,
you know, I will say that. Here here's a better question. Right,
So you're you're going to Jacksonville for the game, right? Yeah? Okay,
so are you like loading up on southern food? Right? Like,
are you gonna you gotta I gotta get some grids,
I gotta get some sweet tea. I'm just gonna live
in Chick fil A and then stop it all my
favorite like are you are you are you gonna load
up on because you can't get you can't get great

(01:36:49):
Southern food in southern California. No, you can't. You can't
get that that the southern hospitality out here in California.
But you know they have they definitely have some good
out here to eat. But you know, definitely when you
go home, you definitely like to load up on stuff
that you don't typically get, you know, out here, and said,
I go to backs fees, I go to let's see

(01:37:12):
you said, get some grits. Uh, all different types about
barbecue spots. Uh what else is you know, there's a
bunch of stuff that you eat sound South. So it's
like I said, it's it's fun. Man. I enjoyed. I
enjoyed being out here. But you know, definitely, when you
go back home, you definitely try to get some of

(01:37:34):
the spots that you are you don't get a chance
to go to. You know, throughout the years, you gotta flip,
you gotta flip your accent. Gotta flip your diet, of course,
gotta kind of change your life too, a little bit
to go back home, no question. He enjoy the bitry
lap in Jack's feel good. Luck to your dogs, and
thanks so much for joining us on behalf of balls.
They really appreciate it. We'll do it. Thank you for

(01:37:56):
having it's alec Ogletree. He'll go home, remember, and he'll
be gunded right when you're in south That you're not
You're not strong, you're gunded. You're light or dark skinned.
It and uh, and I'm and I'm getting and and
and he is. That's in the Grid's belt. That's in
the sweet tea belt as well. You can get sweet tea.
But it's not like it ain't it ain't the real deal. Man,

(01:38:20):
How good? How good is Sony Michelle and Nick chob
is a one two punch eight seven seven nine on
a Fox. We'll take some phone calls. Lebron James is
up great ball handler and a great passer, but people
mistaken that for like one of the all time great passers.
I'll try and make the distinction between the two upcoming next.

(01:38:41):
But first I gotta tell you I've been sleeping on
my Casper mattress. If you wonder why my voice sounds
so so energetic and so special, it's because I'm sleeping great.
You sleep great, you feel great. You feel great. Yeah,
you perform well at work, and it's all thanks to
the good folks at Casper. It's when of fast companies
feel the most innovative brand. They're not just innovated because

(01:39:02):
you sleep cool and comfortable on this mattress, but also
just the way it's shipped to you. Shipping in a box.
You're like, where's the mattress. It's in the box. You
open to the box kind of fills up with air,
into the phone, and there you go. Sleeping on a mattress,
by the way, is the best way to try it,
not just taking my word for it. Try it, Try it.
You'll like it. Right, we'll put Casper to the test
in your own home for a hundred nights risk free.

(01:39:24):
You can sleep on it. You can. You can do
that on it. You can have your dog sleep on
it with you, have your kids, they paul pile on
and sleep on it. See if you like it. You
don't like it? They picked up from your house. They
do like it. You keep it. Go to Casper dot
com and use the code gotly you could save seventy
five dollars on your purchase. That's Casper dot com code
is Gottlieb. Minimum purchase requires se stiper details in terms

(01:39:45):
of conditions apply. Broadcasting live from the studios of Fox
Sports Radio. Here's Doug Gottlieb at Farmers We know I
or two because we've seen a thing or two like
how to help so you can make sure you're ready
for some of life's unexpected hazards. Stay ahead of the

(01:40:07):
game with tips from a knowledgeable pro at Farmers dot com.
We are so. Lebron had was a tennis sist and
eight turnovers last night when they lost to the Brooklyn
Nets in Brooklyn. And great quote from Tyron LOEU we're
running around here worrying about getting Brooklyn's picked. They might
want our pick. Of course that's a bit of an overstatement,

(01:40:29):
but you know, look good line from Tyler. Cavs coach
said after they lost one twelve one oh seven, there
was a controversial call where a ball was called to
have gone off Lebron pron for the review, it did
go off Lebron. Lebron through a little bit of a fit.
Didn't think it went off him, but the video did
not lie. Uh. That said, like, look, I think here's

(01:40:49):
the mistake that we make. We did this, and I'm
not comparing him to Terrell Prior, but this has happened
twice over with Terrell Prior. When Tarrell Prior was the
starting quarterback of the Oakland Raiders. I've been on national
radio now for fifteen years. I've been hosting my own
show for a decade on three different networks, so you
can go back and track it. I've made a mistaken

(01:41:10):
calls before, like anybody else has. But I remember watching
people like, wow, Tarrell Prior is pretty good, pretty good?
Well he could you know, in the right system. I
was like, no, he's not. What happened was Terrell Prior
was the last possible option for the Raiders, and so
they used him, and they ran as simple a playbook
as possible. One read, zone read, handed off. You know

(01:41:35):
where it's a r P O run pass option right
if you do the zone read. If you don't have it,
you take it out of his belly, you look to
throw it. If nothing's open, you run the football. That's
all they were running. Give him half the football for
you give one maybe two reads and then let's go.
And it wasn't the worst thing ever, that's really they

(01:41:59):
beat the same any good Chargers at the time, San
Diego one time, like I'm Monday Night Football Bill, Like
you know what, Terrell Prior could be a quarterback in
the future, Like no, And what I said then now
applies to him as a wide receivers now a wide
receiver signed with the Washington Redskin. He's got a bunch
of drops this year? Is that because people didn't see

(01:42:21):
him as an NFL quarterback when he was at least
palatable as an ands as a as an NFL quarterback
either he is the worst quarterback in the league. Like, well,
you know, he's not a complete disaster. He doesn't line
up over the guard and take a snap like he
can kind of throw a football, he can kind of
read a defense. You were so surprised because your expectations

(01:42:43):
were so low that you overstated just how good he was.
The same thing happened with Rrell Prior with the Washington Redskin.
When he was with the Cleveland Browns, the Browns were bad,
They'd always be trailing. He converted a wide receiver, and
when he made some places like wow, he's really really good.
Then when he played against the league quarterbacks, so like
they all talk trash. He's not good as a converted

(01:43:08):
quarterback playing for a minimum contract, as a tertiary option
or a fourth option. He's palatable if you try and
make him your number one option. He ain't good enough.
Hands aren't good enough. Route running is not crisp enough.
Hasn't been a wide receiver his whole life, so he

(01:43:29):
kind of knows what they're supposed to do, but he
doesn't really he hasn't refined his craft. Do you know
how good those guys are? Like you watch Antonie. I
used to watch Steve Smith play. Everyone like Steve Smith, who,
like I don't think he's the greatest guy in the world.
And I think he gets a pass as an analyst
because he speaks truce even though he doesn't really investigate
him like hey, whatever. But c Smith was a five

(01:43:51):
ft nine dynamic wide receiver. Should be in the Hall
of Fame someday. The crispness of his routes is something
that's remarkable that takes years and years and years to refine.
You go watch Antonio Brown run Arounte. It's ridiculous how
good he is. And so when we see till prior

(01:44:13):
toy like were he stinks? He didn't stink. You expect
him be a number one or number two. He's not.
But as a guy who has converted quarterback who had
doesn't know that much about the positions, like third year
on the job, he's actually pretty good. Same thing with
Lebron James, Like, look for a point guard, he's not
Steve Nash, he's not even Ricky Rubio. As a pastor,

(01:44:38):
I've heard people go at top twenty pastor of all time, like, no,
he's not now as far as the great players of
all time, like you in the in the is he
a better pastor than Jordan's Like, yeah, he's not magic,
he's not stocked in. I don't even think he's bird
as a pastor might be, as he's different than birds,
so much more athletic than bird. But for a superstar,

(01:45:01):
he's a great passer. For just a basketball player, he's
a big man who can really do everything pretty well.
Um hey, weird story out of Major League Baseball with
a J. Hinch. Weird story Astro's one and then some

(01:45:22):
other stuff went on with A. J. H. We'll get
to that first. Let's so welcome in Dan Buyer, and
then Nick Swisher is going to join us. Dan, what
do you what are you working on? Yeah? Right now?
The big story of the day is the Yankees aren't
gonna bring back skipper Joe Girardi. He will not return
for ten year contract. I should excuse me. Spent ten
years with the Yankees, but his four year contract expired
after the Alcs when they were ousted by the Astros.

(01:45:44):
So Joe Girardi out of a job. You're gonna touch
on the A. J. Hinch story, So let's move quickly
to the NFL where the Cardinals. I want the set
you up. I didn't know. We hadn't discussed. I didn't
know if you saw that. Yeah, TMZ Sports saying that
the Astro Skipper was involved in an altercation at a
hotel bar Tuesday night following their Game one loss of
the World Series. Police were called to the bar at

(01:46:04):
about ten thirty. Remember you talked about how the game
was out pretty quick two hours twenty eight minutes. Will
A J. Hinch was able to make it back to
the hotel. Apparently some Dodger fans came in, We're pretty loud.
Hinch Up then had his own comments to make. There
are some reports that things may have gotten physical, but
there were no arrests or charges filed by police. Hey,
this is last night or the night before, the night before.

(01:46:26):
This was Tuesday night. A quick because because when I
saw ten thirty local time, I was like, no way
he got out of there, got their ten thirty last night.
So this is after they lost game one. He got
into some verbal confrontation that may have turned physical at
the bar, and then of course he managed last night. Yes, yes,
so that the hotel was in Pasadena, and so the
Astros back in Houston tonight. But again, no chargers were

(01:46:48):
filed or arrests made. The Arizona Cardinal's place quarterback Carson
Palmer on injured reserve, so he's gonna miss eight weeks
with that broken arm. Patriots on backer Dante hi Tower
are gonna miss the rest of the year with a
torn pack. World Muscle Cowboys sound kicker Mike Nugent to
take the spot of injured kicker Dan Bailey. Well Brown's
defensive end Miles Garrett won't travel to London to face
the Vikings because of a concussion. Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford,

(01:47:10):
by the way, set out practice again today because of
his sore knee. And how about this, Doug Texans defensive
end J J. Watt, who has done for the year,
says the the thirty seven million dollars that was raised
for Hurricane every relief we'll go to rebuilding homes, child
care centers, and to provide food and healthcare needs for
those affected by the storm. The unbelievable dude, and uh,
the unbelievable dude. Unbelievable the generosity of of others that

(01:47:32):
let's let's not forget the others that raised that thirty
seven million. He just did it with his name. But
it's great, great, great stuff, Thanks so much, Dan. Dan
touched on a little bit on the World Series, which
was a remarkable watch. Last night, Nick Swisher covers it,
uh for Fox Sports. He joins us on the Doug
Gottliep Show. I want to get your thoughts on Girardi,
who you played for in a moment, but let's start
with last night. How much to blame is Dave Roberts

(01:47:55):
oh Man, Wait, what was the question? Here? One more time?
How much to blame is Dave Roberts. I'm don't know
if you could really blame him on that, man. I mean,
it depends on what you're trying to blame him for.
Are you trying to blame him because you think maybe
you took rich Hill out a little early. I don't
think it was taking rich Hill. I think it was
he went turnstyle. You know, he went turnstyle really really quickly.
And then you know, like, look, if you had an

(01:48:17):
issue with any of those moves rich Hill speak now,
if you had a move he uses, he uses, if
it's easy to kind of like sit back here now
that I've kind of been on both sides and kind
of be that Monday morning quarterback. And by the way,
that the Dodgers didn't lose because Rich Hill came out
of the game early. They the Dodgers lost because they
had everything set up for the ninth inning and Kenley

(01:48:39):
Jensen just just didn't get it done for the first
time in his postseason career. I think that was exactly
the game plan going in. Although the one thing that
I said, just like you, is Dave Roberts might have
gone and gotten Rich Hill a little early. Looking back
on it today, I've faced rich ever since college. He's
a Michigan guy. I'm in Ohio stake guy. I've known

(01:48:59):
him for so long. I know his emotions, and he
was visibly upset to be taken out of that game.
I still feel like he might have had a little
bit more in the tank. But the way the game
shaped out, there were three scoreless innings after riche came
out of the game. No, but he also but he
also looked he took my Ada out only after only
one the third um he Watson Watson through one pitch,

(01:49:23):
uh stripling coming, stripling comes in walks. One guy like,
look you walk. One guy clearly looked nervous. Maybe you
go get him when he took Brandon more On. I'm
just I'm wondering, as a guy who has played this thing,
one this thing, if if, if you, if there was
a move to which you like, wouldn't have done that?
If I was him, you know what? Never for myself. No,
And and you can even ask the Dodger players in

(01:49:43):
that locker room, there's no one they would want on
the mound more than Kelly Jensen. And the game. The
one thing that I think is that you're seeing more
often is. And you saw hundred mile our Giles, a
closer for the Houston Astros, as well as these closers
are being asked to do things that they're not used to. Joey.
They're bringing closers in in the early eight, late seventh inning,

(01:50:04):
asking these guys to get five, six, seven out. Hey, man,
that's a tough thing to do. I mean, there are
good players at every time they come to the plate.
These guys know how to hit. And you saw it
last night. I mean, he made one mistake to Marwin
Gonzalez and the next thing, you know, the game is time. Um.
A pretty exciting game, Um, most of the bro I
mean that's as as as a baseball man and also

(01:50:27):
as a fan of the game. We need games like that.
People become interested in the next thing. You know, our
game just exploded, all right, But what's the deal with
the base There's gotta be something with the baseball, right,
like I mean, like, I mean eight home runs and
I understand that. Um. I brought this up with Matt
Holliday who joined us earlier. Like I understand that that
the Josh Donaldson, Hey, money's in the air, not in

(01:50:50):
the ground, like guys are swinging instead of swinging you know,
upper half. They're trying to hit lower half of the
baseball now, right, And okay, but that's great. Eight home
runs more home runs we've ever seen hit. And okay,
it's a hot night and Dodger Stadium, which traditionally is
a tough place to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
But you see enough home runs in the postseason you
think there's something is something going on these baseballs. And

(01:51:13):
I don't know, but I thought the same thing that
you're thinking right now, especially with George Stringer hit that
phone in the gap, and I was like, oh man,
there he goes. Dude, his jot got him over and
got him in. And the next thing, you know, that
baseball looked like you'd hit up a whole another like
jet stream and just jumped right out of the ballpark.
I think there were a couple of homers like that.
I saw Jack Peterson kind of got jammed in on

(01:51:35):
the label a little bit. But hey man, either way,
I'm a monster fan the long ball, just like I
think a lot of other people are as well. And
you gotta remember, man, like guys nowadays aren't scared of
striking out I said something to my wife about the
third inning. I was like, man, I feel like every
single person on both sides are taking just absolute rips,

(01:51:55):
not trying to put the ball in play, trying to
put the ball in the seat. I mean doing Murphy
so very openly about it. Justin Turner has as well,
where any opportunity of these guys to get the have
the chance to get the baseball in the air. With
the amount of velocity it's coming in. Nowadays, it feels
like if you can barrel something up and get it
in the air, the chances of it leaving the ballpark

(01:52:16):
are really good. You know, it's funny, it's actually helping me.
My son's eight, a little bit of a baller, first baseman,
left handed. But you know, I tell them now, when
little kids strike out, you're like, hey, man, the guys
in the big League they strike out all the time.
Aaron Like Aaron Judge helps us, Like, I don't feel bad.
Aaron Judge struck out like two hundred times. You're you're
still good now, You're not six, So okay, liked the

(01:52:42):
same thing. You hit two hundred this year, but hit
thirty home runs. Now. Back in the day that might
not have been a good year, but now with ops
and all that stuff, I mean, that's a that's a
decent year somewhere. Dave Kingman sitting there going like, hey, dude,
I was doing this back in the day. Um okay,
so yeah, I'm wondering if there's baseball guys usually like, hey,

(01:53:04):
there's there's no momentum you go back to Houston. But
they got to Kenley. No one had ever gotten to Kenley.
You know, you saw that Dodging number night No. This
season when leading heading into the ninth and on a
on a game in which they probably weren't expecting to
win because it was Verlander. But to Verlander to leave
the game with a three to one lead, you had Verlander,

(01:53:26):
I would have to think this is kind of feels
like a little bit of the Russian is cut moment
for the Dodgers, that the the Astros got to Kenley
Jansen and a game that they probably should have won
with the leading a three one, leading the in the eighth.
H Do you think there's car is there carry over
from Game two into Houston? Yeah, it's a machine, he's

(01:53:47):
a man human. I mean it just kind of seem
really really kind of gripped onto that moment, and hey,
by the way I saw it, just like we saw
how dominating of a team that they can be, especially
against the New York Yankees in the a LCS. Man,
that was impressive for the Yankees to win three games
at home and hemmediately turn it around and get dominated

(01:54:09):
game six in Game seven, I mean, that was crazy.
I think that we've talked about it this whole postseason,
how home field advantage has been such a crucial thing
to have. It's never really been like that in baseball before.
But I also feel like you've got two great stories, man,
with all the devastation that happened to Houston with the
hurricane and also the Los Angeles Dodgers not being back

(01:54:30):
to the World Series, you know, nineteen start franchise. You've
got two amazing storylines right here. I'm just really excited
to see how it all shakes down. Nick Swish are
joining us in the Doug Otlip Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, let's get to the news of
the day. Joe Girardi out of a gig right move
or wrong move. I think everyone in baseball knew this

(01:54:50):
was coming based upon in fact, the contracts extension had
been given some of the things that Joe said in
press conferences and speaking third person about the about the Yankees.
But is it the right move a wrong move for
the for the Yankees who seemed poise to compete for
World Series after World Series with that young lineup. Well,
I I tell you, I tell you, I feel like
I'm still kind of a shock. I mean, I I

(01:55:11):
heard you say something that everybody in baseball knew it
was coming. I might have been the one guy that
didn't think this was coming or did not know that
this was coming. Now, if that, uh, that gaff or
whatever you call it would have happened against the Cleveland
Indians and then all of a sudden the Yankees get
ousted and losing the playoffs, that is a reason for
losing your job. Here is another thing. This man has

(01:55:32):
been there for ten years, he has won a World Series,
He's been successful. It just kind of seemed like as
of late, the successful guys in the game, the Dusty Bikers,
that John Ferrell's, that Joe Girardi, I don't know, Maybe
there's something going on in that locker room that that
that I don't know about, or or something with the brass.
But I would like to think that the New York
Yankees have thought long and hard about this decision, because hey, man,

(01:55:55):
Joe Girardi is a huge get for another roster or
another team. I just think that they have definitely have
done their They've done their homework. They have had to
because losing to Joe Girardi, that's a big name to
be putting out there on the market. I think it
must have been some personality thing because like in New
York and uh, in New York there there was something
there to which he was saying, you know, the Yankees

(01:56:16):
and their future. He wasn't talking about our future like
he knew he knew something. He knew something was up
this before even the Cleveland thing, all right, So so
you know, like, look, it feels like they want a
guy who's more in tune with analytics, you know, less
about feel unless less kind of old school manager style.
But I mean, I don't know, I feel like the

(01:56:37):
game is evolving, There's no doubt about that. Um. I mean,
you know, Joe Girardi was my skip. I mean I'm
kind of bias about him. I feel like he's done
a tremendous job I enjoyed him the time that I
was there, but I haven't been in the locker room
for a while. UM, I feel like the game is
shifting to more numbers than more of a feel. But
then again, we were talking about it earlier this morning

(01:56:59):
and how play there's just kind of become numbers. I
think people kind of forget sometimes that these players are
human beings, and sometimes it's not always what's written down
on a piece of paper that means something. I feel like,
if you want to be a manager and you want
to be a leader, number one, If you want to lead,
you have to be a leader of men. There are
twenty five guys in that locker room, and you need

(01:57:20):
to find out how each and every one of those
individuals pick. And I think Joe Girardi did a good
job of that. I'm interested, just like you, UM, who
who could come into there? I mean, obviously for myself,
I think that the Yankees might go internally, guys like
Tony paanea Rob Thompson, a guy like Kevin Bahl who
was the hitting coach there for so many years. UM.

(01:57:40):
I just feel like whoever gets that job is really
landing on a gold line because that team is built
for the future, no doubt I would. I I tend
to agree with you. You know, it's it's interesting you
you mentioned and how guys are just numbers. No better
example of the fact that it's it's there's the human
factor to it where you know you're you're managing based
upon brs Hey. Last night, Kik comes up and he's

(01:58:03):
terrible against right handed pitching, and I think it was
against and I think it's against Giles below the Mendoza
line against and of course he laces a single in
a big spot. Why because Keik Hernannez is running a
fever since sitting three home runs in the game. You
cannot you cannot predict that. I think that's what's the
hardest thing about trying to guess baseball games, is it.

(01:58:25):
By the way, this stuff is crazy, man, Like this
is like script stuff like you can't you can't predict
any of this. You can't. You can't at all. Who
did you pick before the series began? I had the
Cleveland Indians winning the whole thing. No, and before the
series began. Before this series began, oh, I had the
Dodgers and seven. It feels like it's it feels like
we're not. I just I can't see Houston winning all

(01:58:48):
three games, right, I just I definitely think the series
is gonna come back here to l A. I got
the chance to be on the field the last two
days doing some pre game stuff, and hey, rather it
was maybe electricity that you could feel on that field, man,
Like it's been a long time since I've been in
the World Series. Man, it was an honor to be

(01:59:08):
down there. And by the way, I was having a
conversation with the Gordon from the Miami Marlins and he
was telling me, Swish, Man, these guys are so good nowadays.
The athlete is just getting so much better. I'm so
excited to have these young, enthusiastic teams uh in the
World Series, man, because they're gonna help our game grow.
All right, last thing, really quickly, Houston with the dome clothes,

(01:59:31):
it's easy. More home runs, right, I mean then that
then that plays the ball fly out of there, especially
the line. Think you're gonna have that thing open close.
I mean, it doesn't matter, the ball is gonna leave.
I went for more of the same, Nick Swisher, Nick,
enjoy it, Safe travels, Houston, Thanks for joining us. Okay,
talking to all Right, that's Nick Swisher, who really we

(01:59:51):
always need to have him on, pick up his energy.
You know, he's a guy who's not enthusiastic the sarcasm
of course, crazy crazy game. Um, I'm gonna share a
story about the World Series that no one else was
talking about. I'll do that with for you up coming next,
this is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(02:00:14):
What True Car. You can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
new or used. Visit True Car to enjoy more confident
car buying experience. Doug Gotli Show, Fox Sports Radio. Uh,
we got a lot to get to. Ryan Music still
celebrating the fact that his Halos are the only Southern

(02:00:35):
California baseball team, Our Halos, only Southern California baseball team
to win a World Series. Since we'll see if the
Dodgers can turn that thing around. Let's get to the press.
Dune doon, dune, Noon, Dune, doun, dune, dune and dune.
What do you got for me, Dan buyers? Well, it

(02:00:55):
is the big news. You've talked about it throughout this
show by yourself with your guest Jojar already not coming
back with the Yankees, so his tenure run as a
skipper is done. But Doug of the eight teams that
have lasted the longest this year at Major League Baseball,
three of them now looking for managers. John Farrell out
with the Red Sox, Dusty Baker done with the Nationals,

(02:01:16):
and now Joe Girardi after an ALCS trip, done with
the New York Yankees. It's really interesting, like the this
is like the NBA. You know the NBA, they say
that the last award you want to win as the
coach the year coach the year almost always fired like
the next year, year and a half later, like the
last thing you want to do in baseball. I guess
has reached the playoffs because they can figure out like, hey,
actually you know what, he doesn't know what he's doing.

(02:01:38):
I look at these teams as well, when you talk
about the money that was spent, it's almost like a
death wish to want to manage these teams. If even
if now, even if you win in Boston, you're still
not Terry Francona because he didn't end the streak and
you're just the manager there. I think there's a lot
of tough jobs in Major League Baseball. Um astro skipper
A J. Hinch, if he could bring home a World
Series may never have to buy a d in Houston

(02:02:00):
and Pasadena. Different story. TMC Sports says he was in
an altercation at a hotel bar Tuesday night following their
Game one loss in the World Series. Apparently some Dodger
fans came in chirping, so Hinch did some chirping back.
Police were called, no arrest made, no charges filed. Yeah,
the story is we like, I do feel like fans
are a little bit more embold than now. Right. I

(02:02:21):
thought like message board allowed guys to say things that
they would never say to somebody's face, And now I
don't know, maybe it's Twitter, but people feel more emboldened
to say something supposed like it does A J. Hing
is managing in the World Series, like keep your mouth
shut and just go hey, good luck mane. You know. Yeah,
I also think as well, like you know that the
Astros are probably staying at that hotel. It would have

(02:02:42):
been different if it was on Melrose, if there was
some place or and you didn't necessarily know that A. J.
Hinch was there and you were talking and he overheard you.
But I think maybe these fans knew what they were doing.
Arizona Carlo's place quarterback Carson Palmer on injured reserve today.
He's gonna miss at least the next eight weeks with
that broken arm. Uh. Yeah, they're kind they are done.

(02:03:04):
This is a team too that was looking at a
quarterback in the draft and then ended up not taking one.
And now they've got the Drew Stanton effect the London
game as the Vikings and Browns, but it's not gonna
have Miles Garrett. Also, Sam Bradford said out a practice again,
but it could have. Stefon Diggs, the Vikings wide receiver,
went through a full practice today. It's really amazing how
many injuries they've had over the past two years. Other

(02:03:25):
teams have had injuries, but to have consecutive years of
these type of star players and yet this year they've
kind of found a way, um, you know, because of
case Keenom to survive them. And we'll see is Sam
Bradford or Teddy Bridgewater Ultimately the start of there, we
were talking about Sam Bradford, the first overall pick, Carson Palmer,
the same as wal Mark Sanchez was a first round
pick and his former coach Rex Ryan now kind of

(02:03:47):
throwing Sanchez under the bus. In a piece with the
ESPN dot Com, Rex Ryan said quote with Sanchez, I
knew he wasn't going to be a franchise quarterback, but
I thought he'd be good enough to win with With Sanchez,
we couldn't have it anymore. The bone headed interception, especially
in the ren Zoe red zone, it was mind boggling. Unfortunately,
Mark never really got better. I don't It's probably not

(02:04:08):
unfair to say. The question becomes, are we now going
to allow Mark Sanchez to speak and talk about the
fact that Rex Ryan did not do a good job
at times, especially when he was in Buffalo, Like is
it cool to a form of Buffalo playing? Like, hey,
guess what, Rex Ryan was a bad head coach. We
didn't get any better defensively when he was there. Dolphins
Ravens tonight, I had some quick Ravens facts. Do you

(02:04:29):
know who their all time receiving yardage leader is the
Ravens um Nasty Smith? Oh, kom Bolden, Derek Mason Mason. Yeah, yeah,
but Derek Mason is not the Derek Mason is the
coach of van but very important and was there forever
you were talking with Daniel Jeremiah about the fall of
Joe Flacco, who leads in all Ravens categories, second all

(02:04:51):
time team leader and passing touchdowns. Then he test AVERTI
with the Ravens who appeared in Just Yeah twenty nine games. Finally,
Tristin Thompson and am On Schumpert appeared on TRL today
and MTV didn't even know they still had it. I
did not know they had totally the request. I didn't
know people still made music videos. And that's the press
backing out there and pressed. That was the press by
the press, brought you by True Car. With true Card,
