(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in to the
Tuesday Podcast. What a show we have for you. Joel
Clatt will join us stock college football, Pete Prisco will
join us talk NFL football, and so too will Chris
Sims and why I think the Eagles are closer to
a rebuild than they are the Super Bowl. Let's get
(00:42):
after it. Boom, What Up America? Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio, coming to you from the Lovely City of Angels.
When Doug Gotlip Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio.
You know, there are things that make us kid ourselves
(01:05):
into believing that our process was right because we become
results oriented. Right last night, the Philadelphia Eagles won game is,
by the way, currently being replayed on the NFL Network.
And it's not the first time, and I've watched it
several times over, So I do actually know, I don't
(01:26):
think I know what I'm saying is true. The Philadelphia
Eagles are not a great football team. I'm not sure
they're even a really good football team. They have some
pieces I like, they still may make the playoffs. And
yet if I was in their boardroom today, if I
(01:47):
was in their front office today, I would say, loudly
and clearly, men and women and whoever else is in
this room, we are actually closer to a rebuild or
a remodel then we are to a reload. Let's not
(02:09):
get it twisted, right. True, If Nelson Agilare catches any
of the three game winning receptions he could have caught,
their record would be above five. True. If deshan Um
Jackson was healthy, he would take the top off the
(02:31):
defense and you'd have even more room for their tight
ends and running backs and other wide receivers to catch
the football. If all Sean Jeffrey had been healthy earlier
in the season, maybe he wouldn't be such a malcontent.
Here's the problem. Sean Jackson's over thirty years old. He's
less likely to be healthy as his career goes on.
(02:54):
All Sean Jeffrey is sorry always hurt Lane Johnson's eye,
they're hurt or suspended on a yearly basis that this
we do in fact no based upon his history within
the league. They have other pieces that are close to retirement.
And then the biggest change between the two thousand and
seventeen Philadelphia Eagles and the two thousand nineteen Philadelphi Eagles
(03:18):
is their defense. That defense was third on third downs,
fourth in yards allowed, first against the run, fourth and
points per game, and they hit the quarterback the third
most times in the National Football League. This year's defense
hits the quarterback to nineteenth most time. They and the
red zone nine quarterback pressures, and they've allowed the seventh
most passing touchdowns. By almost any statistical measure, they are
(03:44):
an average to below average to frankly bad defense. You
can tell me it's about injuries. You can tell me
it's you know, the problem with winning a Super Bowl
as you lose some pieces. All I can tell you
is with a division where keep in mind, this is
not your average division. This is not a team that's
(04:10):
playing against a ridiculous schedule. The Philadelphia Eagles are not
only below five at six and seven, but they have
currently two wins over two good teams, and their own
division has one team already fired their coach, the Dallas
(04:34):
Cowboys going to fire their coach. The New York Giants
looked like they're going to fire their coach, maybe even
their GM. You're in the worst division in football and
you can't get above five, even though you've had your
quarterback the entire year. We can point to all the
other stuff, but this is just in that good of
football team. That's it. They don't have the personnelity Cowboys,
(05:00):
and yet in a dysfunctional year with a dysfunction division,
they can't separate themselves. Red zone defense that's below average
nineteen and quarterback pressures that's mediocre, which means average nine
in points per game allowed defensively mediocre average. And they've
allowed the seventh most passing touchdowns. That's below average, sub mediocre.
(05:25):
It's atrocious. You can tell yourself it's the injuries. But
shouldn't the division kind of balance that out? Right? You
can tell yourself, Wow, it's just one of those years
where everything goes wrong, or does everything go wrong for
a reason, like, look, you should we should own the
(05:46):
fact that the Eagles were the best team in football
and won the Super Bowl spite of the fact that
had a backup quarterback was kind of playing on a
hot streak. But they wanted because the defense was so good,
running game was good and allowed Nick full and the
and the play calling was good. And they were in
into a Patriots team that was not super talented, and
they just outscored them and got one more quarterback pressure,
(06:10):
one more turnover, one more stop, and won a Super Bowl.
This is not because they're six and seven. This is
not let's not be result oriented. Result oriented. We'll tell you,
Oh listen, if we we make the we make the playoffs,
(06:30):
that were good. No, no, all Sean got hurt again.
The Sean has been hurt all year. Some of your
lineman close to retirement, and defense ain't great. Now. I'm
not saying they should do what the Redskins need to do,
which is strip it down and start over or a
light of match if you will. They're not the Bengals,
(06:52):
they're not the Dolphins. Hey, they're not a team that
if they're not where the where the Raiders tried to
get to last year? Right, this is if the how
you like the house analogy, you buy it? Okay, you
probably need to read to the kitchen, read some bathrooms,
you need, knocking down any walls, paint the whole house,
(07:13):
put in some new carpet, maybe some floors, and you're good.
But what what could happen is your house? You look
on Zillo and your house is worth a little bit
more in your neighbor's house. Well, that's because your neighborhood sucks,
not because your house is so great. Right. They're not
(07:36):
the Saints. They're not the forty Niners, not the Vikings
have a ton more town. Hell, they're not even the Packers.
And I know they beat the Packers, but they're not.
They're they're not one of those elite football teams. I mean, look,
they're not the Seahawks. It is not. But the best
(07:58):
of the best are Niners? Are uh, Saints are Vikings?
In terms of talent? Maybe you go Packers. The next
tier is Seahawks. The next tier is Cowboys in terms
of talent, right, the next tier is probably Packers. I mean,
(08:24):
think about the Bears. If they figured out their quarterback situation,
who would you rather? Would you rather have their defense
or just your quarterback? Kind of what it feels like.
So again, this is not light a match. This is
not they say in my neighborhood. You don't scrape it,
you don't knock it down and start over. On the
(08:45):
other hand, in a bad division, you are a sub
five team with an elite level quarterback, an elite level
play color is head coach. And yes, you're injury plagued
and mistake plagued, and you've had a lot of drops.
But if you think that winning a couple of the games,
of those games would change the fact that you need
(09:07):
a bit of a remodel, you need a freshening of
the roster. Kidding yourself, which is what happens a lot
of times when you end up go into the playoffs,
as you start thinking your head, well, you know, we
made one play here, one play there, we win another
playoff game, and then all things are great. Now, No,
(09:30):
all right, here's what I wanna do. I'll come next.
I'm gonna make my case whether or not I believe
or don't believe the Patriots. We'll have the guys chime
in as well, maybe working a phone call eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox. The Patriots have been caught
doing something they shouldn't have been doing, and they have
(09:51):
laid out essentially their defense. Do we should we believe them?
I'll tell you next to the live edition of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
app Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. By the way,
(10:17):
the Dog Gotland Shows brought you by Discover Card. We
treat you like you'd treat you. Um. This was Bill
Belichick yesterday on w EI addressing the allegations that I
believe of your sports fan you know about Sincinnati Bengals
alleging they alleging they um illegally recorded their offensive play
(10:43):
callers while the Bengals played the Browns this past weekend. Evidently,
this is our production people on the TV show that
we're there and we have absolutely nothing to do. We
have absolutely nothing to do with anything that they produced,
direct or or shoot or anything. I'm never in seeing
any of their tapes or anything else. So this is
something that we have zero involvement with. This is something
(11:07):
that you'd have to talk to the production people about
what they were doing. They also released a statement earlier
today essentially saying the same thing. Do you believe the
rogue cameraman defense. Now, look, they benefit from the fact
that it's the Bengals, right who they play this week?
(11:29):
I mean, honestly, outside of the Redskins or maybe the Dolphins,
and the Dolphins, it's his former assistant and there wasn't
bad blood there. I honestly believe if it was anyone
but the Bengals, there would be a lot less belief.
But now you're like, why would you copy? Why would
(11:53):
you have you care that much about the Bengals? Bengals
are bad and frankly it feels like they're trying to
be bad. Why would you do that? It's why would
you cheat off of Spaccoli in Mr? Hands class? Is
that two data reference? Buyer? What do you think? Do
(12:13):
you know? You know? Speccoli from Mr Right? Across the
streets the Galleria, Fast Times, a Ridgemond High. There you go,
There you go, speccoli hopping out of the van old
Mr hand Right, classic classic. I just want to point
out the first time I've ever seen the girls with
(12:35):
their top off. That was that was That was my
my movie first time. Anyway, Um, I look, here's the
Patriots statement and it's a pretty interesting one. Um, it
doesn't say a ton. The production crew is independent of
our football operation. We accept full responsibility for the actions
(12:57):
of our production crew at the Browns Bengals game. I
do tend to believe them, but I also believe that
whoever is in charge of them should be fired immediately.
Here's why. Here's why. Um, Look, we all have a past.
(13:18):
I have a past. If you don't know, just read
the comments. Anytime I tweet something, apparently it's new news
to people. That's something I did and admitted to doing
twenty one years ago. Is worthy of response to the
fact that I said George Kills not much of a
blocker in comparison to Rob Gronkowski. Somehow right. I don't
(13:41):
really understand the correlation, but on Twitter it makes sense.
We all have a pass, and and and knowing that
I'm very sensitive to uh to some of the sponsorship
deals that we do. There's a company called Flock who
is a sponsor of sports our show on Sports Radio,
(14:05):
and I was like, look, I didn't steal anybody's identity.
Want to make sure it's clear. It's not the same crime.
It's not really actually close. But I did steal somebody's
credit cards. And I did use them twenty one years ago.
And if if, if you want to make that correlation
and not have me read your advertisements on Fox Sport Traitt,
I fully understand full disclosure is important. So look, it
(14:33):
was closer in terms of proximity and time, but spygate
is still front and center in any Patriot, any NFL
fans mind. So it's not that the Patriots had any
knowledge the real, actual working Patriots and football team. I
tend to believe that. But the idea that somebody didn't
(14:55):
say to the camera and hey man, whatever you do,
don't film the other teams sending him plays. The league
is kind of sensitive to that, and fans are kind
of sensitive to it, right. It's it's like they're not
gonna draft the Patriots are gonna draft a tight end
who may or may not be involved in the murder.
(15:17):
Why kind of sensitive to it. It's the same reason
the Patriots had to get rid of Antonio Brown, the
kind of sensitive to issues with women off the field.
The owner, right, So anytime you have a past, and
(15:40):
most of us do, you have to only be cognizant
of it, but you have to make sure you fully disclosed.
Is our past, and let's stay as far away from
that as possible, far away from that as possible. So
I don't think that the Patriots had anything to do
(16:00):
with it, not just because it's the Bengals, just because
I don't think anybody's that stupid, and I don't know
why the cameraman did such a thing. And then, you know,
the worst possible admittance of guilt is like supposedly he said, like, hey,
can we just throw the tapes out and start all over? Yeah? No, no,
(16:24):
that's you get caught, right. Let me just that's that's
telling the cop who pulls you over, well, do you
want the beer? Let me just poured out in the
gutter and just let me go home. Call it even.
You know what, what if I just went over to
the passenger's side, or how about you take the beer,
I'll leave my keys on. Just uber home. We're good, right,
(16:46):
Like yeah, not really even close to the way it works.
Alcoholic shouldn't be anywhere near a bar, and the Patriots
shouldn't have anybody filming anywhere near somebody else's sideline during
NFL game. By the way, the ultimate irony of it
is apparently the segments called do your job, and either
(17:09):
the cameraman was really doing his job or more than
likely was not actually doing his job while trying to
cover an advanced scout who was doing his job. So
I just the whole story is amazing. The one team
who gets caught doing this is the Patriots. On the
(17:32):
other hand, they get caught doing it against the Cincinnati Bengals,
whom everybody would say, like, if you're gonna cheave why
the Bengals? Right? How about some of those Ravens plays
seemed to befuddle you the first quarter when you're down
twenty one, nothing that might help? Oh what about a
team like the Houston Texans who just whooped your ass
(17:53):
filmed their place. You don't need to film the Cincinnati Bengals.
Maybe figure out how to stop pat mahomes in the
first half. Figure that one out. Those will come in
handy when you get to the playoffs. Right, and you
can give me the Patriots lost two games a row.
(18:15):
They're getting desperate. This is what the Patriots do. I
don't think anybody's that stupid. Definitely not the Patriots. I
just don't um buy or do you believe the Patriots defense. No,
I actually believe a lot of what you say. Of
I don't think it's as big of a deal. But
you just can't do that. You can't be there doing that. No,
(18:39):
I I agree they can't be there doing that. But
do you believe that the coaching staff and the actual
football operations had nothing to do with it? Um? Yeah, yeah,
I'm good with it. So you do believe their defense.
You believe their defense, but you do not believe that
they should get away Scott. This is what I believe.
(19:00):
This is probably I believe that there probably was a
production crew there to do stuff. Definitely was No that
was that was you know, sent there by the organization.
I don't think that Bill Belichick said, Okay, we gotta
get a guy in Cleveland, Yes, exactly. Do you know
(19:21):
what that's from? That's from? Um, don't give you men.
Have you seen a few good Men? No, I've saw
it's just seen the part where Cruise and Nicholason go
at each other. Really you haven't seen a few good men? Yeah?
I haven't. No, It's okay, listen, it is a great movie.
You can't handle the truth. It's it should be on
(19:45):
anybody's top ten list, Like it's that good a movie.
It's that. I mean, you got Jack, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore,
I mean, dude, it's listen. I'm just I'm gonna ask
(20:06):
you please watch it sometime around around now, like in
the next couple of weeks. Okay, can you do That'll
give it a shot, you know? Yeah, Ramo see you
the John Ramo Show, say networks like every day. I
don't want on the USA Network because I want to.
I want him to experience the full thing. Yeah, you
got it? You're right? Um good great or phenomenal movie? Well,
(20:30):
Jack Tookason makes it phenomenal. Seeing Tom Cruise is pretty maze.
Cruise is good too, I would say great, Wait, Cruise
isn't good. Cruise is good. You I had to drag
at you. I think Nicholson steals steals the movie. He's amazing.
He's amazing. Also Kevin Bacon in the movie too, No, no,
can I not? Yeah, Kevin Bacon right, so six Degrees
(20:53):
of Bacon. Be sure to catch the live edition of
The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific to be the Good, to be the
coal um Let's welcome in. Chris Sims Pro Football Talk
and Football Night in America. Do you believe the Patriots
football staff had no knowledge of what was going on Cincinnati?
I do. I totally believe it. You know, first off,
(21:14):
I worked there, right, Uh. I think I've told you this, Doug.
I was never around a team that followed the rules more.
I mean, we couldn't have a five dollar bet on
March madness like that. Would you get a memo the
next day that said don't do that? You know the
other things to listen, I know everyone's gonna go there's
a history or all right, hey de Flaye gate, that
was a Tom Brady thing. That's not a New England thing,
(21:34):
spy gate. Okay. At that time, you know, there was
nothing really written in the by laws in the NFL
that was illegal. Yeah, maybe not like eth A Coal.
But you know, Belichick is really smart and he was
getting back in Eric man Genie too. So you know
with this one, I think the thing I look at
is obviously there's a reputation, right. I don't think New
England's stupid enough to send credential people and do another
(21:55):
team's press box and as they're filming the sideline, like
thinking they wouldn't they get away with it? Number two,
Like Bill Belichick isn't gonna like trust some random video
guys to you know, come through and crack the code
of the sideline signals of the Cincinnati Bengals. I mean,
this is one of the smartest people I've ever been
around before. Ever, I just think that the video crews
(22:18):
stupid in general. It doesn't sound like anything I've heard
that they're a part of the football, part of the organization.
So no, I'm not I'm not buying it one bit. Okay,
I agree with you. I would say that the guy
that's the dumbass is whoever was in charge of the
production crew. That's like one of the things, hey guys,
listen before you go out and film this thing. Just
(22:38):
a reminder where the Patriots got a little bit of reputation,
be extra careful around filming any other team that plays
in their signals. Right, that's the whoever isn't whoever the
executive producer is who Hi, that's the guy who takes
the fall. You're right, exactly right. I mean you gotta
know or the full you know, scope of the situation,
(22:58):
and you said it right that you're the Matriots there's
a little reputation there. They've had some you know issues
there already, and you just I just can't even believe it. Yeah,
whoever in charge of that department is truly stupid to
let his people, uh film the sideline for eight plus
minutes or whatever it was Doug Gottlib show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Let's get to what's actually on the
field for the Paths. The bad news is, they still
(23:22):
don't seem to have the playmakers right, and there doesn't
seem to be an appetite for Antonio Brown, and he's
the only guy really out there who could be a
difference maker. So you're gonna roll with what what you got.
The good news is, in spite of the fact they
don't have those playmakers, there are a couple of blown
calls away from either tying or being the Kansas City Chiefs,
who are one of the teams they have to go
(23:42):
through to get to a Super Bowl. So what's your
takeaway from their loss at home to the Chiefs. Yeah,
there's a there's a silver lining. I mean one, hey,
it is the New England Patriots. I don't know if
this offense is ever going to be anything special. This year,
but I think it will be, you know, continue to
be tinkered with too where it's more respect to Bowl
than it is right now. But I don't think it's
ever gonna hit some stride. We're gonna go, Oh, they
(24:05):
found what they needed to do and now they're one
of the better offenses in football. No, I've seen enough
evidence note to now to know that's not gonna happen.
It's gonna be a little bit of a struggle all
year long. The game itself was crazy. I mean, you're
right one the two blown calls there, you're going, Holy cow,
New England gonna win this game. But the other part
of the game, I would sit there and go it
(24:25):
was twenty three to seven and the Chiefs had the
ball at midfield and I'm going, whoa, They're about to
blow New England out up into New England. So there
was two sides of that story. But in the typical
New England fashion, what do they do? They block upon
then they forced the Travis Kelsey fumble and all sudden
me look up and go, they're kind of getting dominated.
But what they might have a chance to win the game.
How is that? Um? You know? Kansas City, Kansas City's
(24:46):
defense has played better the last few weeks. Steve Spagnolo,
he does some creative things on defense. He did some
New England things to New England double James White, double
Julian Edelman, you know, showed a lot of like, oh,
we're gonna all out it and then dropped back into
coverage then then did all outblits in certain situations. So
New England's offense has issues all around. Tom Brady included
(25:08):
he's not playing grade. The old line is not great. Yes,
the weapons on the outside or nothing special. And I
do think Kansas City showed along with the Houston Texas
who did a little bit of this too, Like if
you double Julian Edelman, who else on New England is
going to step up and beat you right now? And
that's the big question. And I think that's the formula.
You're going to continue to see defenses due until somebody
(25:30):
proves otherwise. That that fourth and three toss um I
talked about, like Trental for yesterday, I just kind of
want to want your take. My I get that that
on on tape. It looks like Jacoby is open. On
the other hand, he's got his best wide receiver in
a corner route, and I feel like Edelman. Had Edelman
(25:52):
just stopped and made the defender come through him, it
would have been a p I. So he could have
Brady could have thrown it a little bit for there,
a little bit sooner, or Edelman could have helped his
quarterback out a little bit. I don't think it's as
bad a misread as people who are watching the tape believe.
What as a guy who's been in that position and
(26:13):
knows that offense, what's what's your take? Yeah, I don't
think it's a misread either. I mean, I think you
hit a lot of the right points there. You know,
first off, it's his best player, it's the one guy
he trust. I mean, you know, Jacobe had already dropped
the pass in the end zone, so I'm sure he's
a little unsure there too. When you all out blitz, like,
that's the route you want. See, when you all out
(26:33):
blitz and blitz everybody and there's no safety in the
middle of the field, defenders play inside because they know
they have no help there, so they try to cut
off the inside. Therefore, you know that's the route you
really want. But shod Brelan did a great job. You know.
The other thing too is, uh, yeah, you're right, Julian,
maybe could have played it a little better way. He
slows down and then britleyn runs into him. And also
(26:55):
Brady doesn't need to fall down, but nobody hits Brady
and he falls down, like he could stand tall and
there and deliver the ball. You could have maybe patted
the ball one extra second to give him a little
more time to separate whatever it may be. But yeah,
I'm with you totally. But you know, right now, New
England's New England's issues are across the board. Brady's forty two,
that's just the fact of the matter. And he's not
(27:15):
capable of carrying the offense like he was years ago.
And of course they're having issues an offensive line. They're
not was dominant and running game. And we know the receivers.
The receiver issues are well documented as well. I watched
the Eagles last night, and I understand that if Nelson
Aghilar catches a ball against the Falcons, for example, they
win that game. And uh, there's several games in which
(27:37):
if Nelson Aguilar just individually catches one more ball, they
win the game. The Patriots game, Patriots game, right in
his hands in the end zone. Unbelievable throw. He drops it.
That said, you know, I mean like de Sean Jackson
has been hurt obviously that that hurts you. But he's older.
Older guys get hurt, all Sean Jeffreys kind of always hurt.
(27:58):
Their defense isn't nearly what it used to be. I
think they're closer to not a gut job, okay, but
a but a remodel. Yeah, I think they're closer to
a remodel than they are a little bit of good
luck and catches away from being a ten win team.
Where are you in the Eagles? I agree? I totally agree.
I mean, first off, you know, I I don't like
(28:19):
the criticism around Carson Wentz because I want to you know,
you just kind of said it like who scares you
in Philadelphia? I mean, come on, I think Doug, you
and me are as fast as some of the receivers
that were out there last night, and certainly just the
normal everyday fans not going to know who the hell
those guys were he was throwing too. But yeah, it's
more than just like, oh, we gotta go into this
offseason and sign one or two guys and our problems
(28:41):
are fixed. I agree with you. You know, they need,
you know, a better group of running backs. They certainly
need to revamp the wide receiver position. You know, the
old line. Okay, that's good. They don't have to worry
about that. The defensive line has not been as dominant.
Uh So there's gotta be some tinkering there. Uh. You
know you talk about the cornerback position. Obviously you saw
the first half that was an issue. I got an
(29:03):
issue with the game plan too, as far as what
they did on the defensive side of the ball. Guy
has you know, got a guy in Eli Manning, Yes,
a Hall of Famer, but hasn't played football at eleven weeks.
You're just gonna line up and play man to man
every play so he doesn't even have to think or
do anything and just throw a slant or a fade
route Like I. I didn't understand that. And of course
the second half they adjusted. So I think there's a
lot of things. Like you said, remodeling is the perfect thing.
(29:26):
They don't need to blow it up. There's still a
lot of like key vital pieces that they got um.
But there's certainly a little work to do on that. Roster,
to improve it, to get it back to where it's
it's super Bowl worthy. Like right now, I don't even
want them to make the playoffs. I don't want that team.
They're boring. I don't want to. I'd rather watch Dallas
at least there's potential in Dallas. Right now with the Eagles,
I'm just gonna go, oh my gosh, is every game
(29:47):
gonna be this gut wrenching you know, slam a throw
in there for five yards every play and that's all
we're gonna see. It's it's just kind of a boring watch.
In my opinion, feels like Dallas is like other team's
gonna make a coaching change, barring some run in the playoffs.
Um what, what are your thoughts on the right fit there? Right?
There's talk of an urban there's talk of going and
(30:09):
you know, going to the college route, Like who's the
right fit if and when Jason Garrett does get the
pink slip? Yeah, yeah, I mean urban urban would certainly
make sense. I do get that. You know again, I
don't think like like I've heard the name of Lincoln
Riley thrown out there. Listen. I respect Lincoln Riley. Cliff
King is very shown that you can adjust and go
to the NFL and all that. But I don't think
(30:29):
this is the proper team you want him to take over.
This team is like ready to win right now. You know,
you and I have talked about this. You go through
every position on their football team except for safety, and
you go they're top five in football in that position.
So it doesn't match up the fact that they got
a top ten defense, the top two offense and they're
sitting here at six and seven. That tells you there's
managing of the game, managing the team, managing of certain
(30:51):
situations within the game are all going wrong, you know,
And you need somewhat somewhat of a proven combody. I
like the offensive coordinator Kelly more Um, I do think
you need more of a little bit of a just
a captain of the ship, proven understands how to work
with personalities and we'll understand the little intricacies of certain
(31:12):
situational football to go, oh, this makes sense to get
this guy in here. Irban Meyer would be that guy
and certainly not going to be intimidated by like the Cowboys,
the Jones family, any of that. Uh. I guess my
big thing there is just to make sure the coaching
staff he could get around him. But you know, I
haven't thought about it a lot as far as names.
I'll think about it more and give you some better
answers next week. What's your impressions of the Rams? The
(31:33):
defense look dominant. They're back to given Girly the ball more.
But on on Football Night in America, they basically led
kick off to finish. Are the Rams back? Yeah? Well yes,
I mean I think the first off the Ravens game
is more of like a blip on the radar, and
then like what they actually are as a football team.
(31:54):
You know, the Ravens are a special team. This year.
They went in there on fire hot. It's a very
tough matchup just as far as the players on the
field and the way they play. But yeah, I think
the Rams are going to be a pain in the butt.
I would be shocked if they don't beat the Dallas
Cowboys this weekend. You know, Yes, they're giving the ball
to Girly more, and I think they're doing it more
with like, first, we're gonna come out in the game
(32:14):
and run screens and bootlegs and kind of get you
stretched out horizontally and then we're gonna hit you vertically
with the Todd Gurley run game. The defense is real.
The only thing I really you know, I mean, the
only thing I really questioned it was whether it could
stand up to some of the bigger offensive lines in football,
like we saw with the Baltimore Ravens. But then there
was the Seattle Seahawks game and they whooped the crap
(32:34):
out of a bigger offensive line in that game. Certainly,
so I think the Rams, yes, and they can get
in They're gonna be a force to be reckoned with
either way. They can mess up the Cowboys, thet plans
all of them here down the stretch, and and maybe
mess up some seating in the NFC playoffs. When did
Ryan Tannehill become Joe Montana? Yeah, well, Ryan Tannehill has
been better than people think or real lize. Like he's
(32:58):
one of those guys if we went can sat down
together and watched film in Miami, you'd go, man, he's
he played a lot better than I realized when he
was healthy, but every time things started to go good,
he got hurt. Of course, didn't get to play in
that playoff game that year. He's a pretty elite thrower
of the football. He's a good athlete, as you see.
And you know the thing I thought that just I
(33:19):
get blown away with every week, and I might have
said this to you last week, is he maximizes what's
there to be had on a week to week basis.
You know, I watched some quarterbacks play games, and you
know people will come away and go, well, look at
the bottom line. He threw for three and thirty yards,
and I go, yeah, that's great, but like he should
have thrown for five hundred yards today. There was like
three post routes he missed and another touchdown pass he
missed to maximize that. I come away watching Tennessee Titans
(33:43):
games right now and going, man, there was three hundred
and thirty yards to get and Ryan Tannehill got all
three and thirty. You know that with the running game,
and they have game plan specific defense, right deem ps
Mike Rabo, that New England way. They do creative things
every week. Got a lot of linebackers and defensive linement
and dbs to kind of mix some match personnel sets
(34:03):
and confuse you that way. They're dangerous. They're certainly one
of the hot teams, and plus they're different to me
than the other years we've seen them be in this position,
and that's because of the guy you mentioned. Ryan Tannehill
is just a better quarterback, a better thrower than Marcus Mariota. Therefore,
I just think they're that much more dangerous than we've
seen in the past. He's the one only Chris Simms.
You'll see him on Football Night in America and Pro
(34:24):
Football Talk. Chris, great stuff, Merry Christmas to you and
thanks for joining us. You're the man, Doug. I don't
know if a few good men to top ten, but
it's like top twenty for sure. It's really good. I
don't know. I haven't ranked my movies in a while.
You don't have to drank again. Drank them put in
the top ten. Thank you, Chris. We talked a little
bit of there with Chris Simms. What the chances are

happy holiday season. Let's get to a game. This is
game time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. I felt
like Ramos wasted a good rejoin there on a time
I couldn't sing. Maybe that's edict from above. Damn bio.
(35:33):
What's the game today? Dog? The game today is what
are the chances? That's the game. We're in the middle
of it. That's how That's how Scott Boris is talking
about the Garrett Cole Anthony Rendau negotiations. We're in the
middle of it right now. We're in the middle of
game time. What are the chances, Doug that Urban Meyer
is the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I
(35:55):
kind of think smoking fire right, Like he just happens
to drop the Dogs. Now Boys, now the Cowboys, and
now they're like, yeah, Dallas Cowboys. No, we haven't talked
to Urban Meyer. I'm gonna go chance, which is a
very good chance based by my percentages. What are the chances,
Doug that Giant's quarterback Eli Manning retires after this season.
(36:17):
I'm gonna go eighty five percent chance eight five percent
chance he retires. I thought last night was it was
it was a very very uh transparent look at where
he is, Like, we're very clear picture. Maybe a few
highlights there, but really the big plays were made by
Darius Slayton. But the numbers go to Manning and then
(36:39):
in the second half they just kind of stall and
that really kind of shows Yeah, yeah, absolutely, what are
you like? Look at mean he does he want to
come back as a backup, make a couple million dollars
and and be the like, I don't know, it's a
it's a hard thing. I don't think he goes elsewhere.
What are the chances Jets running back Levan Bell is
a Jet next season? Oh not good. I'm gonna ago
(37:01):
ten percent chance, hundred percent chance that he's on whatever
team he's on, bowling team. I thought it was gonna
be a seven to ten percent chance. I guess seven
ten split. What are the chances Doug that the Browns
trade Odell Beckham Jr? This offseason? Also? I think high percent,
high percentage of this one. I'm gonna go percent chance
(37:26):
O b J. Don't want to be there now a
sudden he's saying the training room screwed up is growing
or whatever. He's a p I T A. You can
use the acronym Peter but not Yeah, the did you
see the video of him and Jimmy Garoppolo after their
game this season and Jimmy Garoppolo saying like in essence
(37:47):
like I've got room. I think it was Pro Football
Focus that may have put it up, but uh, like,
come on, you come on and kind a strong here.
What are the chances, Doug the Milwaukee Bucks fifteen game
win streak gets to twenty game? Um, oh, I'm gonna go.
Do you see the birthday party Eric Bledsoe's birthday party? Um?
(38:08):
With that Janice? Uh put on face Facebook Live or
one of the things. I wasn't invited either. Well, here's
the problem, Like among the things, Janice has not learned
how to sing happy birthday in English? He said, happy
birthday to you, Happy birthday to you. Have a birthday
to you, have birthday to you. Dear Eric, No, no,
(38:31):
dear Eric, dear Eric. Derek. Um, I think very good.
Have you've seen the three teams they play New Orleans, Memphis, Cleveland.
That's three dubs chance and he got the MAVs and
Lakers after that, Dog, that's game. This is game time
on The Dog got Leave Show. MAVs and Lakers are
(38:53):
at home. I understand. Obviously Lakers becomes the toughest game. Um,
is it time to light a match with a historic franchise?

Doug Gotli Show is brought to by the Discover Card.
We treat you like you'd treat you. Do you believe
in luck? It's an honest question. Do you be leaving luck?
Some describe luck as luck. As we're timing and preparation intersect, Ryan,
(39:37):
Do you believe in luck? I do? Uh? Do you
believe you can change your luck? You can make your luck?
I do? How do you do that? By taking notes? Right?
As you said? Um, what is it? Proper preparation and opportunity? So,
I think if you do everything the right way and
(40:00):
put yourself in the best position to succeed, more often
than not than you're more likely to have things end
up in your favor than not doing those things and
just hoping that it will all work out fair, all fair,
good points love it. Rama's do you believe in luck?
I do? Yes? Okay, How do you can you change
your luck? Yes? By putting this off in did you
(40:23):
just take good position? You just said, But listen, if
you guys both believe that you're not, you're not stealing
his answers right, and I think yet right putting yourself
into a position where things can be positive in your favor.
I'm listen. I'm okay with both these answers. I too
believe in luck. I do think that there are certain
people that things tend to work out for. Some of
(40:44):
that is preparation and some of that is God given talent, right,
But some of that also is just like kind of
being fortunate right place, right time. That that's something that
what the French call a certain genessiqua. I don't know
if the Giants are unlucky, but their timing in their
(41:04):
preparation is just bad. But se Kwan Barkley said something
that was really interesting last night after the game. We're
a team that finds a way to lose a lot
of games what we are as of right now. Yes,
that's our team. We're just an inconsistent football team that
finds a way to lose when you finally lose a
lot of them. We're just unlucky. We're just unlucky. Pat Shermer,
(41:28):
by the way, this from Jordan Nan is a fame
Giants insider, seemed resigned to his fate Monday for the
first time. Asked if he expects to finish out the season,
he replied, yeah, I do. We'll just have to wait
and see, won't we. Then Shermer cracked a rare joke
about being asked the tough questions expectation around leaguer, that
Shermer won't survive this mess and that Dave Gentleman is
(41:48):
also in trouble. Look, I think that the Giants, the
Giants may have some bad luck, but I I just
kind of told you so. Look, the Jets have a
(42:08):
running back who's overpaid that miss Sunday's game and was
out bowling it one the morning. Adam Gaze is a
weird dude, right, Like he just the first press conference
and some of his interaction with media, and I don't
know what his future is. He looks like he's gonna
keep his job. And Sam Donald had a mono filled
(42:30):
second year, and somehow they feel more stable than the Giants,
which is the opposite of what normally is the case.
This is what happens when you make a mistake in
the draft. Of the type of mistake the Giants made.
(42:50):
Sam Donald was the number one prospect on most everybody's board,
and they drafted a running back. Now only they draft
running back, but they drafted running back when the Jets
were drafting behind them, and they could have had the
Jets draft Josh Allen they wanted him. Then they go
(43:12):
and get Daniel Jones this year. Who look they call
him Danny Dimes. He played well in the preseason, he
had some he had some moments where he looked like
the real deal this year, but then became turnover prone,
especially fumble prone. I can tell you where their luck changed.
(43:33):
Take a look at this teams that have a starting
running back, teams that have drafted a running back, who
have a top twenty five draft running back. Right the
Giants are two and eleven, the Redskins are three and ten,
the Jaguars are four and nine, The Chargers are five
and eight. The Panthers are five and eight, The Cowboys
(43:54):
are six and seven, the Raiders are six and seven,
the Rams are eight and five. Now, look, I'll point
out the same am team went to the Super Bowl.
The Raiders are six and seven but looked like a
potential playoff team, and the Jacob's kid can really play.
Totally remade from where they were. The Cowboy six seven,
probably gonna make the playoffs. And the issue has not
(44:16):
been Zeke as much as overpaying Zeke. And they had
a ton of success of them early on. McCaffrey's a superstar.
They've been dealing with Cam not being right and then
Cam being hurt and the Panthers firing their coach. The Chargers,
Melvin Gord wasn't there to start the year. If he
was there, they're probably not five and eight. He also
(44:40):
fumbled at the one inch line against Tennessee. Some of
that is his fault, but the Jaguars, the Redskins, Redskins
guys has been had any injury plagued career, and the Giants,
so some of this is making your own luck by
reaching for a need at running back. The quarterback was
right there and they passed and had another year of aneptitude.
(45:07):
But I don't know if the Giants are unlucky or
just bad, or dysfunctional or a combination of all of them.
Because if luck is where timing and preparation meat like. Look,
had they prepped in that draft and known that Donald
(45:28):
was not gonna go number one overall to Cleveland and
they needed a quarterback and the Jets had moved heaven
and earth, but still were behind the Giants. I mean,
think of it. One they could have traded with the
Jets even more a lot to move up or two drafted. Actually,
(45:49):
Sam Donald, it doesn't mean se Kwan Barkley is not
good and squab Barkley has been hurt. The part of
it is that's running backs. Running Backs are like a
luxury car, like a Jaguar. They're in the shop as
much as they're on the street. You don't believe me,
Let's talk Gurley's issue. Zekielli was in the shop, obviously
(46:13):
for his own personal reasons, but in the shop held
himself out this year, and had they They look great
in your driveway, They look great on a Sunday, as
beautiful and sunny like a Maserati. You guys ever heard
of Maserati when somebody turns it on, Like I get
almost aroused at a Maserati almost, okay, maybe not almost.
(46:37):
Like you hear Maserati's engine, you're like, oh, I like
that man because he drives a nice car that makes
cool sound. Right, that's what a running back does. The
guy walks in sa Kwan Barkley's thighs and he's like, dude,
that guy is a burst but stopping. If you heard
of this before to out young running back kind of hurt.
(47:02):
Team hasn't won any more games because of it, right,
and it's like one of these things, like these two
things can coexist. See Kwan Barkley can be great, the
Giants can be crummy, and the two things don't actually matter. Right,
Very rarely do have a great young quarterback and the
(47:23):
team is not great. I mean, Andrew luck was. Some
people thought he was overrated. He won thirty three games
his first three years, and remember he inherited a Colts
team that was over the hill and terrible without Payton
Manning for a year. Remember that thirty three games. Sae
(47:46):
Quon Barkley has been good when healthy good as advertised.
The Giant has been bad these two things can co exist.
It's kind of a really remarkable thing about running backs.
And you can point out, hey, Zeke hasn't been as
good this year. Maybe that's one of the reasons that
Cowboys haven't been as good. Okay, but Dave Gentleman prepared,
(48:11):
but his preparation wasn't right. He miscalculated. He tried to
copy what he thought was the Carolina Panthers model. Maybe
also interesting is that he got rid of Odell Beckham Jr.
Maybe he thought he was saving his franchise, rebuilding his
offensive line. These are not dumb things to do. On
(48:34):
the other hand, if you have a rookie quarterback and
you have a young, talented running back, maybe hold on
to him that that's one of those where the divorce
is bad for both sides. But I look at the
Giants and I think they're unlucky for a reason. They
had the preparation they got in the top five of
(48:56):
the draft. They had the right timing where the Browns
passed on Sam Donald, the number one quarterback on most
everybody on thirty one team's board, and instead they're like,
let's be smarter than everybody else. Let's draft running back.
That's what the gentleman thing to me says, I'm just
smarter than everybody else. The whole world is telling you
(49:17):
draft a quarterback, and Sam, they're like, nah, I'm gonna
be smarter than everybody else. I'm gonna drop your running
back and the right backs. Good and right, that's good.
But now the head coach is likely to be gone,
and maybe the GM is gone, Eli might retire, and
it almost feels like you just you walk in and
(49:39):
we talked about the Eagles. The Eagles are a remodel.
The Eagles. They don't you don't need to move walls.
You walk into the house, like, all right, kind of
smells like old people, right, you were walking on this house.
Why do old people's houses smell like old people? Why?
Why is that? Why do old people have a smell?
(49:59):
I don't understand. They bathe, They usually bathe more than
young people. Maybe it's the powder they put on the spray.
I don't know. Let me know. When you walk into
my house and it smells like an old person, that's
when I know. That's when you can go okay, boomer. Right,
my kids are like, okay, boomer. That's when you know
you're old. When your house smells like old people. The Eagles.
(50:23):
This ain't that hard man, you know, just new backsplash,
new countertops, paying everything white, tear out on the carpet,
put in hardwoods, hunder grand. You're good. Looks like a
new house. The Giants. I mean, you do have a quarterback,
(50:46):
and I guess you're gonna keep him. You do have
a running back and you got But the real thing
that they have is but what's the key to real estate? Location? Location? Location?
That's their location in Land, Like, well, you're the better team,
you're the more popular team in the Jets. You got
a new stadium, You're the Giants. And Dan Jones is like,
(51:07):
all right, and you're running back side. But you know,
if you'd simply walked in and somebody happened to light
a match, the thing happened. They're like, hey, we just
took possession of the house and it happened to burn down.
Crazy thing. Who do That's what it feels like. The
Giants are. Tell me what on the defensive side of
the ball gets you excited. You've got like one or
(51:29):
two offensive linemen you might keep. You gotta running back
you're gonna keep, and you got a quarterback you gotta
keep and outside of that right, it's the weirdest relationship
between ownership and coach I've ever seen in sports. I'll
share it with you next, but first, hey, in sports,
(51:51):
some of the most important plays aren't created on the sidelines,
but in rooms filled with monitors and video equipment. No,
not the Patriots spying of the other teams. Editors piece
together hours the footage of coaches sending in place kidding players.
Players can study their opponent and get an edge. This
information is vital if you're gonna succeed in sports. No

localized in your zip code. These aren't advertised prices or
dealer prices that a lot of of other sites list
their actual prices that people pay for the car that
you want. This gives you information you need to make

information you should never be without. Just in two thousand eighteen, Truecar,

just that got really uncomfortable. That's my brain. Let's talk football,
shall we? I just I did actually wonder she was
very nicely. Jerry Jones was on one of five. Jerry
Jones is on the Dallas radio station, always goes on.
(53:14):
Let's will be fun. Let's take a listen. There is
a report from Jane's there in the NFL network. Can
you confirm that report there's been a recent meeting between
Steven or yourself and Urban Meyer. That's not correct. I can.
I can confirm that it is absolutely not correct. We
have not met with any coach, not met with any specifically.
(53:38):
Why in answering that question, I don't want to imply
that we wouldn't in a way that would diminish the
credibility of the shore in a player or somebody you're
asking about. Normally, when somebody says, have you met with
such and such. Are you interested in such and such?
And you said I have not. Its implication is you're
(53:59):
not interested it. That shouldn't be locked forward either. The
facts are we just have not talked to any coach
potential coach in the NFL. Okay, that was the weirdest
answer everywhere. Ever, this is the strangest relationship. This is like, look,
(54:19):
everybody knows they're getting a divorce. Everyone everyone. He's like, look,
we I haven't asked her out yet. It's not because
I don't want to ask her out. It's not because
I don't think it's just hot, just not singlely yet. Right.
You know, this is the the kids are going to college, right,
(54:42):
that's what this Wait for the kids to go to college.
That's what it is. The kids go to college. Whenever
the Cowboys lose their last game, That's what this is.
I want to make sure this is clear. We have
not met with any coach, not because we're not interested
(55:04):
because we don't think he's awesome, just because we're not
allowed to the team is leading their division. Okay, And
when you win your division in the NFL, they have
this super strange rule where you automatically get home field advantage. Yeah,
we know your division sucks and you're below a five hundred,
but we're gonna give you a home game. Why. I
(55:25):
don't know. It seems like the right thing to do.
Not only that, so teams leading the division, quarterbacks, healthy,
running backs, healthy by everybody's healthy. Season not over. It's
not like they're in life. It's not like the Redskins
who have fired their coach. It's it's not like they're
(55:47):
the Giants who feel like they're going to fire their coach.
It's the Cowboys who they're in prime position. They've already
beaten the Eagles, so the one team that they're i'd
with in their division, they hold the tiebreaker over. Now
they got one more game left with them, and their owner,
(56:09):
who has repeatedly been critical of the coaching, said nothing
in terms of support for Jason Garrett and simply said, like, Hey,
I'm not saying we're not gonna meet with IRV Meyer.
We just haven't yet. That's what he said. We have
not met with r. Meyer yet. It's not because we
(56:31):
don't think Mrs amazing, we're just not actually allowed to.
I've literally never seen this before. Yeah, the only time
I can think of it was um, I get him
mixed up with Spagnola that side. What was the Dan buyer?
What's the coach? He just passed away Sperrano? Right, Remember
(56:54):
Tony Sperno was the coach of the Dolphins and their
owner and front office went to me with Jim Harball,
like while he's in her contract. And they came back
and they had like a press conference, like Tony Sprawno
back his head coach, like they actually went on a
date while still married. And they're like, no, we're good,
We're good. But the cowboys, like Jerry Jones goes on
(57:17):
on the record and says like, hey, I want to
make sure this is clear. We have not met with
any coach because you don't want to. I don't think
he's awesome. We just haven't done it yet because we
haven't fired Jason yet like that. This this is crazy,
it's crazy. How about Jerry last week said like, I
guarantee Jason's gonna be coaching next year in the NFL.
(57:39):
What he worked for you, but you didn't say for you. Listen,
I'm gonna find here, I'm gonna find him a job. Basically,
Jerry Jones is sitting there, you know, He's if if
coaching had um, what's the swipe left, swipe right thing tinder? Like,
if there's coaching Tinder, He's already swiped right. He's like, hey, Jason,
(58:01):
check her out. Huh Cleveland Browns. Do you think New
York Giants washing Redskins washing redskins? Joyn Huskins not bad?
Right now, He's already tried to check Jason up with
a date, and Jason's like, well, I thought we were no, no, no,
no no, I swiped right on Meyer a long time ago.
(58:23):
Just can't set that day to the beating until I
fire you. This is all time strange relationship. Jerry Jones
on one oh five three. The fan continues to top himself.
Joe Clatt is going to join us. Can you do
a little um research to make sure it's not a
(58:44):
sore subject why he missed yesterday? Because I'd like to
know why he missed yesterday, but I want to make
sure that I don't bring it up on air. No

And I get a chance to broadcast the US Open

I want to. And there's really not a lot of
argue with that. All of those are facts. All those
are facts, all right? So look, the college football Playoff
is set, isn't it. That's one of the weirdest parts
about the college ball Playoff, isn't it? Like I actually
(59:52):
had to ask music, wait, are these things set? He's like, yeah,
they're set. Sunday. I wasn't paying attention to I was
so watching NFL football. I didn't know at all. When
did it happen? Is it? Well? They do the selection
show on the Sunday after Championship Saturday. It just wasn't
(01:00:13):
as big of a deal this year because it's everybody
nearly obvious after Utah had lost on Friday and then
Oklahoma b Baylor. In the past, it's been like appointment
television because it was so ambiguous as to who we
thought would get that fourth and final spot. UM, So
this year, I think you just kind of found out
who the top four were and didn't put two and
(01:00:34):
two together to understand that it meant that that's what
the college football playoffs we're going to be. L s
U was your number one team, which I agree with, UM,
but the you know, the guys broadcasting the Big Ten
network she was broad testing the Big Ten Championship game,
did not agree with I believe Joel Klatt. I was
watching the show, and I'm trying to think the only
(01:00:57):
one who I felt like hedged on it. Was it
Brady Quinn Or was it Matt Leinert. I kind of
think it was Lenert who he didn't say straight up
l s U's number one, but was like, look, l
SU's really impressive. Joe Clatt joins us on the Doug
Gotli Show Everything Good with Yesterday, Like, I was so
fired up to talk to you, and then all of
(01:01:17):
a sudden you couldn't join us. We're we're good right,
like nobody everything is fine. Um. I just said way
him in New York for the College Football Hall of
Fame ceremony and National Football Foundation, and I was stepping
into a big reception because it's Jim Delaney's last year's
commis big and so there you go. I'm glad you
(01:01:38):
guys recognized him as such. I mean, he's had an
amazing impact on on on college sports. Um. And obviously
you know they formed the Big Ten Network with with
changed everything. UM. Okay, So Saturday night, on a great
comeback for Ohio State, all the guys at the dais
at the desk, I believe, outside of Lenert, said that
(01:02:00):
Ohio State should be number one. Who did you think
should be number one? I thought Ohio State deserved it.
The committee had put them there the week before based
on their strength, and then they beat another top fin
team by double digits. They had played maybe the worst
tip of football that they played all season in the
first half, and yet still won by double digits. Um.
(01:02:23):
What people fail to realize, Doug is that was the
third straight week, consecutive weeks that they had finished an
ap top ten team and beat them by double digits.
If the shoe was on the other foot and some
that SEC team had just done that, we would have
been talking about this streak as as it was so historic.
(01:02:44):
And yet Ohio State doesn't get the benefit of the
doubt because l s U looks good against the team
that quite frankly, I don't know how good they are.
In Georgia. They lost to South Carolina forgot six doug
Ali show on fox Port Trait, I will point out
that Wisconsin lost to Illinois, right, So I mean, if
you you know, like the four win team, Illinois is
a six win team. If Illinois plays South Carolina day,
(01:03:07):
who would you pick to win? Probably Illinois? I think
I picked South Carolina. But I like the lovey story.
He's gonna stay gamefully employed, and they're gonna make a
ball game. So you make it. And you've seen him,
you've seen him. I've only seen him in highlights and
and loved their comebacks. But so I'll bow to you.
Joe Klatt joining us in the dugout. Okay, so what
really matters is I didn't feel like it was about
(01:03:28):
being number one, It's about not playing number three. How
good is do we have any idea how good Clemson
actually is because of the schedule they've played and dominated
with the exception of the North Carolina game. I think
that's why being number one was so important is because
we don't know how. We think that they could be
really good. Um, they could be dominant for all we know,
(01:03:50):
but we just haven't seen it. They've straight games, their
quarterback just won the national championship, their head coaching won
two national championships. That's three seasons really good football team
we know. I think that's what's so interesting about this playoff,
Doug in the semifinal specifically, is that I know how
(01:04:10):
State is a really good football team, and I still
think it's basically a coin flip because the unknown of
Clemson a number one team heading into the college foot
pay iff has never actually won the thing. Do you
think this changes because you know it's the old does
iron sharpened iron with those teams matching up? Whereas I
don't think l s U as a walk in the
park against Oklahoma, but they do appear to be a
(01:04:32):
far superior team to Oklahoma. Gives them not a week off,
but a better chance of prepping in and maybe feeling
better about themselves. Is this the year that changes. Remember
L s U struggles with mobile quarterbacks. They gave up
four still miss on the ground six overall, and they
(01:04:54):
better come to play. Their defense certainly look better in
the last couple of games, and I think that's why
people are making more of the prohibitive favorite against O.
You Oh you are still a really good offense. Their
defense seems to have figured it out, in particular in
that big twelfth championship game. Um, yeah, I think L
s U wins and and if there's a number one
seed that's going to win the national championship, I think
(01:05:16):
would be in that mold. They can play really good
offense that can outscore you. I think their defense is
much better than what they have been statistically. And they're
gonna be at home for the national championship if they
can get past OU, They're going to be in New Orleans.
I think that's a huge benefit. It absolutely is. You know.
It's also weird is how this schedule, how the schedule
(01:05:39):
works in terms of who's playing where now, which, which
kind of brings me to your point about expanding the
college football playoff. Um, how would you handle with with
the travel right like you'd still have a conference championship game. Correct.
I would highly doubt that these guys would get rid
of conference championship. Too much money, Yeah, too too much,
(01:06:00):
too much money. And there's it's it's really hard to
decide a true conference champion wins. Sometimes teams don't actually
play each other during the year. So if you have that,
then you have what homesites for the first round? Oh man,
I have no idea, you know, like I'm not an
expansion guy. I I wanted to say it for I
(01:06:22):
just want you to have to win your conference in
order to go. Um. That being said, I think that
they'll ultimately do home sites when it grows, dug, it's
growing in the next three seasons. There's there's not a
doubt in my mind. I think maybe long term would
be four seasons. I think it grows within three seasons,
not next year, maybe the year following and a quick turnaround,
(01:06:43):
but definitely that that next season, I think that we're
gonna have an eight team playoff. They're gonna keep conference
championship games. Mike Gass, They'll go back to a host
site to try to reward people for a better regular
season by giving them a home game. The problem with
that one is is a you're gonna have sixteen games
or whoever plays in the championship, exactly, are you gonna
(01:07:07):
have enough bodies sixteen games? Well, this is what also
bothers me is that the powers that be will be like, oh,
player safety, player safety, And yet they won't change the
rule to stop the game clock outside of two minutes
after every first down. So we allow the game clock
to stop, and over the course of the season, people
(01:07:30):
are playing between eighty and a hundred and fifty extra
snaps of football just based on clock mechanics, and and
so all of a sudden you're gonna be concerned about
players safety because it's the sixteenth game. I can remove
a whole game worth of snaps just through clock rules,
which will not change the actual fundamentals of the game
at all. Joel Clatt joining us in the Doug Olie Show.
(01:07:53):
That is a great point, not a good point. That
is a great and super important point that that I
think people inside football know and other people don't understand.
Every time you add to those snaps, you're adding more concussions,
beating up players more. It just it's it's rough, right,
and it it's gonna be hard to field enough teams
and get kids to play in bowl games. Uh, if
(01:08:16):
they're putting their body through all of those all of
those extra snaps, when some of them are preparing for
the future or some of them getting hurt along the way,
He joins us on the Doug Gatland Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Um, let's go back to the games. How
does Ohio State match up with Clemson. This is a
great matchup because I think these two teams are the
most balanced teams in the country. They've got really quarterbacks,
(01:08:37):
great defenses. I think that overall, the talent is probably
better for Ohio State as far as draft picks, in
particular on their defense. And if you're going to stop
a pocket passer, what do you need a great pass rush.
That's exactly what Ohio State has. The reasons Shah didn't
have any sacks in the last two games, dougas Michigan
had three guys on them, Wisconsin had three guys on them.
(01:08:59):
It was full pening up other rushers to get pressure
on the quarterback. If Fields is healthy, I think they
are a dynamic team. When he's converting first down on
third downs for his legs, that's just a big part
of their offense. I'm gonna lean towards Ohio State, but
I do gets a bit of a coin flip. I
think that's the best game that we've got. Last thing,
(01:09:20):
um USC decides to not change coaches. Is that a mistake.
I don't know if it's a mistake. I just I
wonder what they're thinking about in terms of recruiting. If
you look at the top twenty four players from the
state of California, they had zero commitments for this season, Like,
(01:09:42):
you can't have that, UM, But but they kind of
did that to themselves, right because they left because they
left him hanging so long. Now, look, kids do commit later,
and they d commit all the time. They've had some
actually d commit the top quarterback in the state what
d committed and went to Alabama. So things can't change.
But USC does this to themselves. They do. And that's
(01:10:03):
what I've argued for the last two years, is that
this instability, whether it was from the president position or
the A D position, or even the instability surrounding the
head coach and the speculation about his status, that hurts recruiting.
UM if this is going to continue and everyone's going
to be speculating about his job status. That's going to
(01:10:25):
continue to hurt recruiting into next year. UM. I had
many people tell me Doug that this situation and the
fact that the president wanted to be more involved in
the head coaching decision, and the pool of money if
they wanted to make a change was smaller than most
people thought. Based on the fact that they've paid out
over four hundred and fifty million dollars to settlements outside
(01:10:45):
the athletic department. UM, all of that made it less
of an attractive job from an a D standpoint, which
is in large part the reason why they had to
kind of settle on Mike Phone. He was not on
the radar original and they had kind of settle on Mike.
And now when you look at what USC is, they
need consistency because of the recruiting Pee great stuff. Joe Joel.
(01:11:10):
Joel enjoyed New York. You had an incredible year. By
the way, whoever cuts your hair, I find zero flaws
with your hair, which really discussed me at our age.
I appreciate you join us. Hey, that's the best compliment
I've gotten a right good enough. But when we live
in the same area, you can tell me who cuts
your hair. That's what you could do. A former NFL
(01:11:30):
corner thinks Baker Mayfield's a joke. Find out who said
it next. Be sure to catch the live edition of
the Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio Whip in Sports. The top down organization has
it all like a great front office and incredible personnel.
(01:11:52):
It's no different when it comes to buying or selling
your car. You need to have an m v P
at every level. Visit True Car. When you're ready to
discover or buy or sell your next car, I visit
True Car. Doug Olip Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:12:12):
It's only the tenth of December, so we have not
yet reached yet the I'm so annoyed by Christmas music.
Give us time. We'll get there. We'll get you there.
In the meantime, let's get something you may have missed
on Fox Sports Radio a previous Fox Sports One show
and now say former Dallas Cowboy Orlando Scandrick was on
(01:12:36):
the Herd this morning. He was talking about Baker Mayfield
Cleveland just an all around bad situation. It's kind of
a message. Yeah, it's a it's a huge mess. What
do you make of Baker calling out the medical staff.
That's Baker, though he calls out Miles Garrett, who's you know,
one of the best players on our team, after he
hits the guy with the helmet when he could have
tooken a high road and just said, you know, that's
unfortunate situation. Um, we support Miles. Was unfortunate for Mason,
(01:13:02):
and then he just moved on. But instead he always
puts hisself in the middle. And Baker is like a
joke man. He this guy has so much confidence arrogance
to have done nothing. Do you can get how players
see him in the league. I don't know how players
see him, but I mean at the rate that he's going,
I don't I don't see how Baker is gonna play eight, nine,
ten years. He's an interception machine. He doesn't do anything
(01:13:22):
but rub people the wrong way, and once the investment
starts to become explored in the return, then what happens. Wow,
tell me how you really feel? Scanned huh um? The
only part that I would just like I do. I
actually will defend Baker over the Miles Garrett thing, Like
the Miles Garrett thing was a joke. You can't you
(01:13:44):
lose any sort of credibility if you avoid answering the
question or you support Myles Garrett. You just can't. You
just can't. Miles Garrett's actions are reprehensible. Everyone know it,
knew it, everyone saw it. And I do think that
the commercials, I don't blame him. It's like one of those.
(01:14:06):
It's like one of those like you're criticizing somebody else
for going to a party you wanted to be invited to.
How could you go to that party? If you got
the invite, would you go? Hell yeah? But how could
he go to that party? Like none of us would
turn down a chance to do an ad campaign, right,
Like the only one I would probably not do that
(01:14:28):
does run something. I'm not going to do a vaping
ad like I just I won't won't do it. I
don't want to associate with my show. No thank you. Um.
But for the most part, you know, like all of those,
all those other ads are funny, they're clever. You wouldn't
turn it down. So I do think that some of
the criticism is unfair because we're not looking at it
(01:14:51):
from anyone's perspective, which is Baker was popular, he was captain,
and no one turns those down. Would you like to
make five thousand dollars for one afternoon of work? No,
because I've only played one year in the NFL. Zero
that this is such a dumb argument that we have
really really dumb. But you know to who much has given,
(01:15:16):
more is expected, and he hasn't had a good year.
He has regretsed he is. He does look like a
guy who doesn't have the tangibles, not the intangibles, the
tangibles to do what it takes to be a long
time starting quarterback in the NFL. Say, I love these
NFL guys. I can't believe he did that ad campaign,
(01:15:39):
Like you're paying your agent. Your agent gets not not
from your contract, but from your ads your agent usually gets.
You're paying your agent to do something. He brings an
ad to you, like, hey man, this is found money.
It's one afternoon and Michael, oh no, I'm not doing that.
(01:15:59):
Oh of the dumb media driven player agrees with statements.
It's that Baker Mayfield hasn't accomplished enough to do those commercials.
It's not Baker Mayfield's choice. It's Madison Avenue who and
and fans who like him. We need to be honest
with ourselves, much like the Eagles, I'll explain next to
The Doug Otlip Show. Be sure to catch the live
(01:16:21):
edition of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific. I watched the Eagles last
night and I wasn't disturbed. It's not like you're watching
team me like they got nothing but if the if,
the Hey, all they need is a piece and they
got a chance to win a Super Bowl or they
(01:16:44):
need to really think about rebuilding. I think it's the latter,
not the former. That's kind of my general. Like, look,
we got the fully live Manning experience, like oh, you
know basic man and man covered during the game, but
then things kind of get here like yeah, he can't
move at all, not a lot to work with. The
(01:17:06):
Giants at least feel like they know Man, we suck.
I mean see Kwon Barkley, where a team that finds
a way to lose get lose a lot of games.
That's where we are right now. That's what he said.
That's a team that knows and and Pat Sherman is
supposedly gone, and Dave Gentleman is in trouble. The Giants
at least feel like they know like me, because do
you remember when the Giants drafted sa Kwan Barkley. The
(01:17:30):
argument for drafting a quarterback was, you know, the Giants
are never in the top five of the draft. They
were last year, they were the year before that, they
will be this year. That's not good stuff. Hey, so,
but the Giants are bad and feel like they know
they're bad. The Eagles are not there, right, They're not
(01:17:50):
in the fire. Howie rosemand fire the head coach. They're
not there. Let's not go crazy. On the other hand,
look at the top team is in the NFC. Cowboys
appear to be a coach away, but they have the
talent is there? New Orleans defense is really good, although
(01:18:11):
it wasn't great this past weekend, but has been really good.
And the offense has playmakers and Drew Brees showed that
maybe can't do it every week, but did it last week.
New Orleans is better than them. The Niners are better
than them. The Cowboys are more talented than them. If
you watch the first game between these two teams. The
Packers are better than them. I know they beat the Packers.
(01:18:32):
The Vikings are more talented than they are. The Bears
feel like they're quarterback away and are trying to find
a way to hide that fact. Um parts of the
Rams are better than them. The Eagles are closer to
a rebuild than they are a championship. That's my genuine,
(01:18:57):
genuine general takeaway is that I watched them and I
think if you walked into this house and you're like,
do I buy it? Yeah, if it's at the right price,
and I know I can still remodel it if it's
at the top of my budget, and I'm gonna have
to live with this house as is oh Sean Jackson
(01:19:19):
heard all year, all Sean Jeffrey heard again, offensive line injuries, issues, age,
gonna have some gonna have a retirement, and maybe more
than anything, the defense, which was the real story, right,
the real story, the reason they could sustain and I
know they didn't really stop the Patriots. Patriots never punted
(01:19:40):
in the Super Bowl two years ago, but what got
them to the Super Bowl was in many ways their
defense and the ability to pressure the quarterback third and
quarterback hits, third on third down, fourth in points per game,
number one against the rush. Look at this year three
red zone defense nine and quarterback pressures points per game
allowed seven, most touchdown passes a lot. Your defense isn't good,
(01:20:05):
your offense has injured pieces, you haven't been able to
consistently have great play in your offensive line. This is
a team that should rebuild more than reload. Now I'm
not saying that it's a fire sale, get rid of everybody,
start all over, right. If if you if you need
(01:20:27):
some the housing analogy right like there's you can scrape it.
That means just light a match, burned it to the ground,
you know, scrape it. You could get it to the studs,
which is kind of where the Giants are, right, get
to the studs because at least you have the foundation
of quarterback, running back, some offensive line, or you could
(01:20:48):
do a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel. It's still got
some pieces to it that you like. But this is
not a living as is, and when everybody's healthy, everything's
gonna be all right. Team Eagles are not there because
if they were, the numbers and the and the way
in which they play would would be lie just the results,
(01:21:12):
and they don't, and they don't. Have you guys thought
about what you want for Christmas? I gave you a
homework assignment. Have you guys thought about it? I was
just looking at how get back at don't you guys
did your homework last night? You're like you like my kids.
(01:21:34):
You're like my kids. None of you guys need your
homework last night, Ramas, I asked you to scan and
scour the internet, and you did, but not for that.
That's true. Music. Did you come up with something? I
can't anything. I can't suggest anything to your fiancee unless
you like give me kind of you know, you give
(01:21:54):
us kind of a heads up of what you want. Um. Also, um,
I it took me fifteen minutes to explain the overtime
rules to my son last night. That was quite interesting.
It's like, wait, so if you score, if you score first,
you in yes, if it's a touchdown, why is that
(01:22:15):
to be a touchdown? Because because why? I don't really know.
Somehow a touchdown is better than scoring otherwise I don't know. Um.
Did you guys hear this Levyan Bell story? All right,
Levian Bell missed a game but made a game. We'll
(01:22:38):
explain next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk
lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at
Fox Sports Radio dot com and within the I Heart
Radio app. Search f s R to listen live. Okay,
so there's this weird story out of New York. Stop
(01:22:58):
me if you heard this before. It feels like a
social media story out of Florida with Levan Bell. So,
Levan Bell didn't play this past weekend because he had
the flu. You guys wear of this. I did not
play for the New York Jets because he had the flu.
(01:23:19):
Adam gaze Um had to answer some questions as to
not only why he didn't play, but why he wasn't
with the team. Here's Adam gaze That wasn't his fault
that we said that he was still contagious. That's what
the doctors told him. I'd rather not be I'd rather
be him at home just getting better. But I will
(01:23:39):
be a conversation we have. I mean, we have a
late start today, so I'll have a chance to talk him. Okay,
So this is this is super interesting, really interesting. Levan
Bell wasn't allowed to be with the team because they
deemed him to be still contagious. So instead of going
(01:24:00):
home at some point he went out and he bowled.
Here's the money quote of all money quotes. This is
leban Bell on all the hubbub over his bowling venture
at one in the morning on Sunday night. The Bigger Surprise,
I wrote off the flu that's the bigger surprise, career,
(01:24:26):
that's my career. No seven splits, no, no, thank goodness. Nah.
Actually kind of super impressive. I'll point out. Also he's
from the Midwest. People in the Midwest bowl, right. I
(01:24:49):
actually enjoyed bowling is one of those things. I do
get the bowling a d D. But it's different than golf. Golf,
it's like the fourteenth hole, you're like this thing over
yet ready to go fun. I hit a couple of shots,
had a gold beers. Now I'm ready to go bowling.
It's you always the first game's fund and you stink.
Then the second game you're a little bit better, and
then you get like four or five uh is it rounds?
(01:25:13):
What are they called buyers? A Midwest guy, I guarantee
buyers bowled a punch bunch in his lifetime. Frames they
called frames. You get like four frames in you're like,
why I bowl another game? Um? Do you buy this
story music. You don't buy the story at all? Do
(01:25:36):
I mean? I buy it. I just think it's ridiculously
I wouldn't say tone deaf, but just he lacks perspective
to understand why that would be a terrible idea, regardless
of how you feel. I mean, if the team says
you're still contagious, all right, that's fine. You may be like, well,
I feel fine, but you still have to be smart
(01:25:58):
enough to understand. You play in New York. Now, no
matter where you go, someone's gonna take a picture of
you somewhere, and the tabloids are gonna find out about it,
and it's gonna be a terrible look one way or another.
So he's supposed to sit at home. Yeah, yeah, he's
supposed to just sit at home. Okay, here's the thing.
I actually have no problem with him bowling, with exception
(01:26:18):
of fact, I think it's super rude. So Dave Revson
was my first partner in doing college basketball games. He's
the lead lead studio host for the Big Ten Network.
He calls games on the Big Ten networking on Fox.
And I'll never forget we did a Rice game. Rice
was playing. I don't think it was Rice Houston, but
(01:26:44):
um Rice played a home game and Rice's Jim used
to have a curtain behind it behind one of the goals,
and behind that curtain there were bad mitten courts and
there'd be dudes playing bad mitten during a college basketball game.
I can't I kid you. We actually said what do
you think is behind that curtain? And we did that
going to break and came back and showed dudes diving,
(01:27:05):
laying out playing badminton while the college basketball game was
going on. Anyway, Willis Wilson, great name, great guy, was
the coach at the time. All Right, Willis Wilson was
the coach of Rice. Willis Wilson is currently the head
coach at Texas A and M Corpus Christie. I'll never
forget this. After the game, he came up to thank
(01:27:27):
us for covering the game. They lost the game, came
out out of the locker room to thank us. Hey,
you guys did a great job telling our stories. I've
got a bunch of text messages and we tried to
shake his hand and he's like, no, no no, no, I
have been feeling well, why don't we do elbows? And
to this day you asked Dave Repston was like, that's
my favorite coach of all time. The you know, to
be respectful enough that we were going home to our
(01:27:49):
families that you would not touch hands, shake hands, shug
whatever as a respect that's a good human being. Levan
Bell opposite of that. Do they just told you you're
contagious to stay away from the team, so you're gonna
affect infect a bunch of other people? Now, I will
stand down from these remarks if this one thing happens,
(01:28:09):
which is a distinct possibility, if he's good enough, the
bull two fifty one probably has his own ball. You
have your own ball. I think I'm gonna be okay
with him going out and bowling, and I have no
problem with it. And I'll tell you why. When you're sick,
do you feel better if you just lay in bed?
Or do you feel better if you get up and
(01:28:29):
do something music? I guess it depends on the severity
of you got the flu. Yeah, I got the flu.
I'm laying in bed? Buy or what do you do?
Stay in bed? Have you guys ever gotten up and
done something, gone and worked out, gone in the steam room,
gone sauna? Huh No, I'm seriously if you've tried it.
(01:28:51):
Sweat out a cold deal I have on the back
end of where you're finally like, oh, I'm starting to
feel slightly better, and then it helps push forward. But
when I'm in the middle of like actually having the flu, yeah,
you feel terrible. You feel terrible. Obviously he did not
feel terrible. He was coming off of the flu, but
they felt like he was still contagious to kept him
(01:29:12):
away from the team. So I'm actually I'm okay with it.
I don't think it's being tone. It's it's only being tone.
If he's using like the public bowling balls, think about
how gross that is. Right, Dudes are sweating and drinking
beers and going to the restroom and coming back and
(01:29:34):
then stick everybody sticks your finger in the same bowling ball,
like nobody. Do they sanitize those things? No chance. Why
do bowling shoes work? Can somebody tell me that? I
don't really know. I want to know the answer to this.
Why the bowling shoes work? What is it on the
on the wood surface? And lets the bowling shoes work.
I don't have any problem with Levian Bell getting out
(01:29:56):
of the out of the bed if they told him
to stay I missed two practices in my entire basketball life.
And the only reason I missed them was I showed
up and I was still had a fever and I
still felt sick, and my coach kicked me out and
said I would infect everybody. I get everybody else sick,
so he sent me home. It happened two days in
(01:30:17):
a row, and I just I'm not not somebody who
just sits at home unless a few good men is
on and that changes things. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at
three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio WAP. Pete Prisco, Prisco, you
(01:30:38):
feel like a bowler? What's the highest game you've ever bowled? No,
I'm like you guys, never got the I'm in I'm
in the same range something like that. I don't have
a problem with Levy on Bell if he had the
team's really told him to stay away going out and bowling,
but only if it's his own bowling ball or shoes.
Your gonna flu and you put your nasty sticky feet
(01:30:59):
so body else's shoes. Like, yes, but the whole bowling
shoe thing is pretty gross to begin with, right, Like,
let's just be honest, Like, you're sticking your foot inside.
Nobody does that. You don't share shoes anywhere else on
Earth except for a bowling alley. I agree, I think
it's disgusting. But yeah, you're putting your your flu hands
and the bowling ball that's probably not yours unless you
(01:31:20):
have your own. Now, he might be a real bowler. Yeah,
if he's bowling two one, I'm guessing he has his
own ball, of course he does. Yeah, but yeah, should
he be bowling when he's got the flu? Calling six
to your place on two Thursday and Friday and then
go out bowling on Saturday and see how that's People
see that, you know, they'll view that as being how
can you do that? Okay, But the Jets somehow seem
(01:31:43):
more functional than the Giants. How is that possible? Well? Sure,
I think that's part of the problem. And I think
the Jets, you know, the Jets obviously feel like they
have their quarterback and they feel like they have their
code and gaze, and a lot of people say they don't.
But I think he's a good coach. I think you'll
prove that out by the way. Did you hear him today?
(01:32:05):
He sound like he got sick from lovel so maybe
he should have let everybody go. He really he actually
he actually really really did um. Okay. I watched the
Eagles last night, and I think if if you're trying
to judge, are they a Super Bowl contender, if they're healthy,
or if they need a remodel. I don't think they're
giants needed told a new coach a total rebuild, you know,
(01:32:29):
But I think they're more remodeled team. I kind of
think they're kidding them to. Their defense statistically isn't anywhere
near what it was two years ago, and their offense
obviously has had some huge drops Nelson aguil Are in particular,
and had some bad injuries. I just think that this
is a team that's gonna gonna fool themselves even if
they make the playoffs, because they're not. They're not in
the really in the conversation of the elite teams, they're
(01:32:52):
not an elite team. But I mean the injuries have
impacted that team in a big way. I mean, he
holds the ball because somebody gets open, and not having
to Shaun Accent really hurts them. Not having Jeffrey hurts them,
but not having Lane Johnson also hurts them. So I
think added all off and that's the problem. On offense.
Defense of the cornerbacks that dire bad. And it looked
like a period there where they started turning the corner
(01:33:13):
then against Miami Mills was terrible, you know. And then
you know last night, a couple of plays for those corners,
bad situation. And if they don't get home with that
pass for I could have problems. So I agree with you.
But you know, having said all that, Dallas isn't exactly
playing good football either. No, no, but they feel like
they're a coach away, right, I mean, like this is
such a matter of fact. I'm sure you've heard it.
(01:33:35):
Let me play it for you. I've never heard this before. Okay,
what Jerry Jones said on Dallas radio station is like
it's a denial that they met with urban Meyer. But
then listen to how he contextualize it that essentially saying
he respects her buyer, wants to meet with their buyer,
(01:33:56):
just hasn't met with hermyre yet. There is a report
from Jane s there in the NF Phone network. Can
you confirm that report there's been a recent meeting between
Steven or yourself and urban Meyer. That's not correct. I
can I can confirm that it is absolutely not correct.
We have not met with any coach, not met with
(01:34:17):
any specifically. Why in answering that question, I don't want
to imply that we wouldn't in a way that would
diminish the credibility of sure in this player or somebody.
You're asking about Norman. When somebody says if you met
with such and such, are you interested in such and such,
(01:34:38):
and you said I have not, its implication is you're
not interested. That shouldn't be brought forward either. The facts are,
we just have not talked to any coach potential coach
in the NFL. Pete Briscoe joining us from CBS Sports
and CBS Sports dot Com. Pete, doesn't that feel like
this is a divorce. They're just waiting to the kids
(01:35:00):
go to college. Oh, that divorce is happening. Uh. Barring
the Cowboys getting on some kind of run where they
get to the championship game, that divorce is happening. They're done. Uh.
And and I do think Reben Meyer isn't play there.
Have they met with them? Probably not? Formally, but I
guarantee there's been some probably some contact between the two
(01:35:20):
sides and and a feeling out process, because let's be real,
Jason Garrett, barring getting to the championship game and beyond,
is not going to be back next season. I don't
care how Jerry spins that one. But have you ever
heard a guy say basically, we were going to meet
with him, we want to meet with him, we respect him.
We just haven't done it yet because we can't while
while leading the division. By the way, correct, Yeah, it's
(01:35:43):
a it's a it's look, that place is always a
toxic situation and there's so much drama there in the
first place. But you mentioned it, are they a coach away?
If you swap Doug Peterson for Jason Garrett, would the
Cowboys be a Super Bowl contender? I think the answer
is yes. Yeah, I went to agree with you, so
you're right that's the problem. But I think Doug Peterson
will find a way to get that team to beat
(01:36:03):
the Cowboys in two weeks, which is why I think
they'll win the division. The Lamar Jackson teams are going
to have seen Lamar Jackson before when they see him
in the playoffs, they'll see this offense which is very
unique to the NFL, led by a very unique player,
and he does have some playoff experience, has played well.
The league catch up to him in the playoffs. Well
(01:36:25):
did the Bills catch up to him last week? And
people say no, And I haven't watched the tape yet,
but they did some really good things against him, and
and they're fast and they're athletic, and I think that's
what it takes. You look at their linebackers. Evans can run,
Mulano can run, the two safeties can run, and they're
good players. So what they did is, you know, they
dared him to beat them outside. Now he got him
(01:36:45):
on the one play where Hearst was wide open. That
was a bust in the secondary. Other than that, they
did a great job limiting in here. Here's the thing.
If I'm playing him, hand the ball off the marketing
or I think Marketing is a good player, but I'm
gonna let you hand it off the market ingram'ma contained you.
I'm gonna take away the middle of the field throwing
the football. You're gonna throw to the outside guys. He
just doesn't throw to the wide receivers. And that's how
you got to try and slow him down and limit
(01:37:08):
his big playability, keep him inside, keep him contained in
the run game. And theorem is one of the wide receivers.
I'm not gonna let you throw to Andrews when he's
on the field. To hearst and and and and boil.
You're not gonna do it. You're gonna throw your wide
receivers if you beat me that white you beat me.
Explain the Houston Texans to me. I can't figure them out.
I can't figure that team out. I mean, they played well.
Not granted, the Patriots are limited offensively, they're on a
(01:37:31):
fast team on offense, and you can play him a
little bit different, But how can you let Drew Lock
go in there and let you up the way he did.
I'm gonna give him credit, by the way. He's a
cocky kid with a swagger and a big arm, and
he played that way. But so if you're the Texans,
you're a legitimate playoff team, you cannot allow that to happen.
Can you mentioned the lack of speed like a speed
of linebackers hurt the Patriots against both the Texans and
(01:37:53):
the Ravens. They like playmakers on offense. Do they have
enough in terms of personnel to get this boat. I
don't know if they have enough in terms of personnel,
But somehow, some way, that staff will scheme around it
and there'll be a factor come January. I don't think
there's any question about that. I think with Brady Belichick McDaniels,
(01:38:13):
they'll scheme around that on offense. And I think defensively
they're still pretty good team. You know, Kansas City went
in there and didn't exactly light things up offensively, and
that's a good offensive team. So I do think the
Patriots will still be a factor. I just don't know
if they run well enough to win at all. That
there's always the possibility that you have to get some
chunk plays in the playoffs, and I don't know if
they can. Okay, what do you make of the Patriots
(01:38:34):
filming the Bengals and saying, yeah, we hired that film crew,
but they have nothing to do with the football operations.
But here's the thing, though, Doug, if you really wanted
to film the opposition signals, couldn't you just get a
guy to buy a ticket and sit in the stands
and do it? If you really wanted to. You know,
I say this all the time coaches. If I'm a
(01:38:54):
coach in the National Football League and training camp practices
are open to the public, and you not supposed to
go there and scout those practices because that's kind of
like the unwritten rule. He just don't do it. Why
not send your buddies, your cousins. You do it anyway
you want to, but does don't make it look like
it's coming from the team. You could do that. I
(01:39:14):
could film the Bengals sideline signals in the stands as
easily as anybody can, So why would you do that?
I don't know that they did it with the intent
of using those signals. But then the other side is this,
this is a new coaching staff, doesn't really know the signals,
probably has a book on everybody else's signal, So maybe
he did do it, or I still thinking maybe it's
(01:39:34):
in plain sight, right, Like the best way to hide
is in plain sight. Like now we came in, we
got the NFL badges, were like, I look, I I
generally believe it, just because why are you steal in
the Bengal signals? Like of all the teams? And I
know that people say well, if you steal the Bengals,
you stole everybody's you know, I believe it. I just
think the guy who's the dope is, whoever, the whoever
the executive producer is, had to have marching orders of hey,
(01:39:57):
whatever you do, be very very sensitive to filming the
other team, because this is the Patriots. We do have
a history. Again, though, if I really wanted the Bengal
signal signals, when I said and say, I sent you
to sit there and film the singles for me, why
couldn't you do that? You could do that, get a
lower level bowl seat, and probably I gotta cost you
that much money in that stadium or or in the
(01:40:18):
Brown Stadium because nobody's going to the games. And you
said there and you film them with your cell phone.
Your camera on your cell phone is every bit as
good as you know, any other camera you're gonna get
these days. It's easy to do. So I I look,
I do I think that they've you know, skirted the
rules a little bit over the years. Absolutely do I
think they did at this time? Probably not. The l
A Rams seem to have rediscovered their defense somewhat of
(01:40:41):
their running game. What is their ceiling? This season. Well,
I think they gotta hope. You know, obviously they can
get to the playoffs if they went out the Vikings
lose the game. That if I'm not mistaken, that if
they get in so went out and then go from there.
Gospice starting to play well, and I think the changes
on the offensive line of helped them. I know haven't
seen surpose. Bobby Evans has played well at right tackle. Uh,
(01:41:03):
they've improved that offensive line. Early in the season, they
were getting beat up. They won't run the ball. Girly
starting to look like himself defensively, I still worry about
him a little bit. They're not big and and teams
can pound them and run the football on them. So
even Donald's Donald's a great player, but if you run
at them, uh and double them, I think you'll be
able to move the football arms. So I do think
they get to the postseason. They's gonna hope the right
and to lose a game or two. Yeah. Uh. You
(01:41:25):
mentioned the Vike eas did to mention the Packers record wise,
and everybody thinks Aaron Rodgers is great. They when they're
von they got Davonte Adams sometimes overly reliant, but he
does make plays. How good are they in your mind?
I think they're good if they can get a lead.
And by not I mean they're not still stop the run.
(01:41:46):
They're not a big defense. There are athletic defense and
so you have to have the lead. The two Slips
are good players, and Darius Smith and Pruston Smith they've
had good years, but they have to have the lead
because they're pass rushers. Oh oh, I couldn't say goodbye
to Pete Prisco. Pete, we got we got you, we
(01:42:08):
don't have you? All right there we go go ahead.
You said they're they're pass rushers. Then we lost you
keep going. Yeah, everybody, everybody is run on them all year.
I mean that's the bottom line. Teams are running on them.
So if they don't have a lead, that's gonna be
a problem. Built like the old Indianapolis Colts when they
had a great quarterback. Right, get a lead and then
those guys can pin their ears back. Pete Prisco check
(01:42:29):
out his work at CBS sports dot com, FALM on
Twitter at Priscoe CBS. He watched the tape. He knows
the people. This guy's been doing it forever and he
does a great job of it. Pete, great to catch up.
Thanks for joining us. You're the best business is booming
in one professional sports league. I'll tell you about it
next Doug Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're
(01:42:55):
having a merry Christmas. Happy holidays to you wherever you are,
we appreciate you. I'll be in New York City for
most of next week kind of bummed out it's not
gonna be snowing because you know, when it's snowing in
New York City, there's no people on the streets when
it's snowing. And when you start to realize this New
York is awesome, it's the people that suck it so
(01:43:20):
m It's like when we come to work here in
the holidays, you're like, man, that drive was easy. Why
is it usually so hard? Like? Oh, the people, people
get to the president, the press. Truer words were never spoken.
The NFL and formed clubs today that projections for the
(01:43:42):
upcoming salary cap in will be about one ninety six
million to two hundred and one million. Ian Rappaport says,
that's about increase from just five years ago. How wait,
what go go with the numbers again? So the salary
cap probably gonna be just around two million dollars for
(01:44:02):
uh five years ago season it was a hundred and
forty million dollars, so at increase in the NFL salary
cap over five years, A lot of a lot of
how about this? From the NFL network. The report says
the owners and players union will continue to negotiate a
new CBA this week. The sides help talks last week.
(01:44:25):
The report says there was still hope a deal can
be reached by the end of the season. Yeah, I
mean just making money. And you know, like, look, the
only thing that can hurt momentum is any sort of
labor strife. You just don't want that. I'm telling you
right now, Baseball, there's gonna be a there's gonna be
some sort of lockout, hold out, strike towards a sort
(01:44:47):
of thing. Because the players Association signed a bad deal
last time. For the first time really ever, the owners
won and they got a strong union. I'm guessing they
won't win as much this time time. The NFL looks
around and like, look, we can do it hurts our momentum,
it's all good. I think that's a smart decision. The
question is how many games? Yeah, that will it be
(01:45:08):
a seventeen games schedule or I think we're gonna get seventeen.
I really do, Okay. The Redskins placing various guys on
injured reserve mentioned this earlier following his injury to the
Packers on Sunday. Yeah, he may never be right with
the multiple knee injuries. But some of it is supposedly precautionary,
the spray knee. But it's like when you've had color,
you had major knee surgery, you have a couple of
(01:45:30):
other knee injuries. Just take the rest of your off
and get right the uh did you I missed it?
Did you hear Levan Bell talking about his bowling game?
I did, Okay, all right, I just can I hear
it again? Yeah? Sure. The biggest surprise I will two
ft one off the flu. That's the biggest surprise. That's
my career. Seven Yeah, no, no, thank goodness. The last
(01:46:02):
question was one where guys like I know nothing about bowling.
Let me just go uh now seven ten s let's
slay on. No, that's all I got my gold bowling stuff, right,
That's all that's all I got. You should ask a question,
do you use your own ball? Use your own shoe.
Kind of gross. You're using somebody else's ball and you're sick.
Like now, man, I got my own ball. It's got
a rose in the middle of it. Like my hero
(01:46:24):
Erne McCracken. You've seen King Pen, haven't you? A long
time ago? That's a funny movie. That's very good. How
about this from the Hot Stove Stove Baseball winner meetings.
Not a surprise, but the Yankees have reported they made
an offer to Garrett Cole that's more than Steven Strasburg's
deal from the Nationals. What about the breaking news with
(01:46:45):
the Phillies Gregorious signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. Gregorios Right, dude,
he going deed he was the guy says bye bye,
say by bye. He was Oh what what was that?
(01:47:06):
What was his home run call for d d It's glorious, glorious.
A lot of things that ever, say us, not for
the Phillies, Scott Boras saying, as for the talks and
Garret Cole, they are heading towards a hot climate. How
about this, I'm sure there's a fantasy team, I mean
a secret team. Anyway, two mystery teams involved. According to
(01:47:32):
According to Boris, some people are speculating that it's the
Astros getting back in on it. Well, bang, the Astros
are banging the trash can. If it's them, that's true.
Fastball one are arms up, if they're in, arms down,
if they're out the Nationals every port of They reached
out to the Cubs about acquiring third basement Chris Bryant.
(01:47:54):
That's because the Cubs are trying to sell off their pieces.
They can't get along together. The could be also be
the replacement for Anthony Rendon, which leads me into my
final story of the press today. This is for you
and Ryan Music. The Angels reportedly interested in Rendon away
their first round pick, and Zach goes, all right, yeah,
(01:48:15):
I just want sent him to the San Francisco Giants.
So if they don't get cold, they could be in
on Rendon. Dodgers, Rangers, Phillies also in on the free
agent third base. Imagine having Arti Marino's checkbook. He just
bought a stadium for like three d fifty million dollars, Like,
all right, I want to buy a picture? Was that three?
Here's another check? Oh Rendon, there's no check. Three hundred
million dollars. We will that be like, get out there
(01:48:39):
and pressed. That was the press really quickly. A Happy
birthday to my boss, Scott Shapiro. He is a Timberwolves fan,
more so than Lizzo, right, Lizzo is just a Karl
Anthony Towns fan. He's like a real hardcore, old school
Twin Cities Minnesotan who loves it in Roves and the Vikings,
(01:49:02):
which means they'll come up short in the playoffs. Coming
up short is really kind of the name of his book,
which is Scotch Puro. I'm kidding. Happy birthday, Scottie, thanks
so much for bringing me over here. Stug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio,
