Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Thread is a new hit podcast from Ozzy Media
that explores history surprising connections in order to discover how
one thing leads to another, like how movie moguls in
early Hollywood helps spark the me Too movement. Today, get
it on I Heart Radio or wherever you listen. You're
listening to Fox Sports Radio, Boom America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
(00:23):
Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from the City of
angels Man. Do we have a lot to get to?
Get you caught up on? Lee Jenkins, who who wrote
the piece for Sports Illustrated last time um Lebron James
decided to return to Cleveland, also authored a much shorter
(00:46):
uh not a third person not first person piece on
Lebron James his shortstop in Los Angeles, The Decision three
point oh. He'll catch up with us here in fifteen minutes.
Toroy Levola will be our guest in the second hour
of the show. That's uh four o'clock four twenty on
the West coast. On the East coastcuse me one twenty
on the West coast. Michael Porter Jr. Will join us
(01:07):
at five on the East coast. Too. On the West coast,
and Anthony Slater, who worked for the Athletic Bay Area,
will join us and we'll talk about well, I think
everybody is reacting to, which is DeMarcus Cousins. Boogie Cousins.
What's the best way to make a championship team? Dance?
Put a little boogie in it? Anyway, Um, DeMarcus Cousins
(01:30):
is now a member of the Golden State Wars. It's
not just that the Warriors got him. That got him
as a free agent only one year, only five point
three million dollars for a guy who going into last
year was searching for max money. So there's there's a
ton to it. Ton to it, but there is there
(01:50):
is this one thing that I think you should learn
to accept. There's this discussion or maybe point that's made,
has been made to me many times over in terms
of playing, but it works for you in life as well.
Lots of people say they want to be great. My
(02:10):
son is nine years old. He says, I he wants
to play Major League baseball. That's great. It's left handed.
He hits right, although he can hit left. So we're
gonna have him hit left, but more next year. He's
a little young for his league. This year, throws left
obviously plays first base, great spirit, probably be a little
small to play first base. It's probably the one thing
(02:32):
that I would say would be working against him. Outside
of that, you know, he loves the game, understands the game,
and plays at a pretty high level for a kid
his age. And then you know, can you hit a
major league curveball? Can you can you top ninety with
your fastball? You can do either of those two things?
(02:53):
You got it, You got a legit chance. But but
I told him this. I was like, look, there are
lots of kids who put on a jury or Z
and say I want to be Steph Curry. There are
lots of kids that go out and throw with their
dad and say I want to be Mike Trout and
Clay or Clayton Kershaw. But are you willing to sacrifice
the things on a daily basis which will allow you
(03:16):
to take the steps to becoming the guy you ultimately
want to be? And of course, like any boy, any person, absolutely,
but it's not saying it, it's doing it right there.
There is a there is a certain amount of doing
that that has to take place in order for you
to uh to see it too, to achieve your potential
(03:40):
and I'm sitting here looking at at Kevin Durant, who
won an m v P, went to an NBA finals,
was up three games to one on the Warriors. They lost,
And all I hear is hey, Kevin Durant is soft.
Kevin rand took the easy way out. Sure he won
(04:02):
two finals m v P and two and finals MVPs
and two championships, but he had to join a seventy
three win team to do it. In order to land
to Marcus Cousins, Kevin Durant had to take slightly less money,
about five million dollars less. Now, that doesn't seem like
that biggest sacrifice for somebody who's already made over a
(04:25):
hundred million dollars and it's probably gonna make over, you know,
close to a billion dollars all told, by the time
they're done playing basketball. Between Nike, his deals obviously not
that of Lebron but Nike um all his other tech
company stuff, investments, et cetera, and his various contracts. So
(04:47):
in order to get to Marcus Cousins, he took about
five million dollars less. You go back to his previous deal,
and he took about five million dollars less um in
order to land Andreago Dolla and Sean living Stone when
their contracts were up. Kevin Durant can be criticized all
you want because he joined a team that lost in
the NBA Finals. They won more games in the regular
(05:09):
season than any team in the history of the sport.
But there's two things that that that strike me about Durant.
One is this, all these guys say they want to
win a championship. The most important thing to me is winning.
How many times you heard that at a press conference
or on a radio in a radio interview. But to
Kevin Durant, he puts winning above money. Right Look at
(05:36):
the Houston Rockets. Look at the Houston Rockets. Between James
Harden's extension last year and Chris Paul's extension this year,
both of them took every penny that they had rightfully earned.
Chris Paul hadn't rightfully necessarily earned it with the Houston Rockets.
(05:58):
But throughout his long, an illustrious career as a max
contract guy that many years in the league, nobody bet
and I at the money that he's making, even though
we all know that those last two years are probably
gonna be a little bit dicey, But did he have
to if if winning was the most important thing, couldn't
Chris Paul have taken less money to free up more
(06:19):
money for Trevor reason to resign? Right? Like all these
guys say one thing. They all it's like my son saying, hey,
I want to be major League baseball player? Like okay?
Or do you want to get up at six in
the morning and go to the cage and hit forty
five minutes? Are you willing to eat? Right? Are you
(06:40):
willing to do the little things? And then I look
at the Golden State Warriors, and I also realized that
only they are they willing? Is their best player willing
to sacrifice? But their team is They're just smarter. DeMarcus
Cousins does not come without risk. It's coming off in
torn achilles tendon. Nobody knows how will play this year.
(07:00):
His attitude has never been one to which you'd model
a basketball player after. And he might have um a
tertiary or even worse role on the offensive side of
the floor. And while we say, hey, all DeMarcus Cotton
Cousin wants to do is win, Because if he shows
he gonna be part of a winner, then that a'll
night him for his next team. The likelihood is he's
(07:25):
going to be at best a fourth option offensively, and
all guys say, like, I'll do it if it's for winning.
Let's see what happens when you look down at the
box score and you see, you know, five shots, you
only make three, you only play twenty minutes, but your
team wins by fifteen. He's still gonna be happy. Kevin
Durand strikes me as one of the few guys who
you know, you know the uh was. It walks it
(07:48):
like he talks, it, practices what he preaches and whatever
cliche you want. Everybody says they're willing to sacrifice, says
it's about championships. Kevin Durant and it's not that much
for him, ten million dollars, ten million dollars. But but
(08:09):
with that ten million dollars they were able to get
DeMarcus Cousins, Andre Goodala, and Sean Livingston. He was willing
to sacrifice a little bit of money for two titles
and maybe now three. Here's agent Wardanowski trying to explain
to Marcus Cousins situation in free agency. The injury played
a big part in the pressing the market for him. Uh,
(08:32):
the fact that there wasn't solar caps face in a
lot of places. But here's the reality Demrcus Cousins had
to deal with and now has to start directifying Golden
State his image. There were teams with Space who did
not want him in their locker room, didn't want him
in their organization. He's gonna be sitting on the bench
with Steve Kerr. He's gonna be sitting there in practice
and games. They're gonna get to know each other. They're
gonna get to build a relationship before he ever steps
(08:53):
on the court, and they think that's really important. Golden State.
I tend to agree they have a great culture. He's
gonna have to buy into that culture in order to
make it work. If it doesn't work, they still may
be able to win without him. If he does buy
in and he's three quarters of the player used to be,
they'll probably, they'll they'll be the best team. And they've
they've they've improved some. Um, there's no guarantees he's he's
(09:16):
actually worth that money. You're always worth what somebody's willing
to pay. But it stuns me on how no one
else seems to have pointed out, Hey, this is the
second time Durant has done something that other stars won't do.
Lebron didn't do it in Cleveland, Meloshers held v none.
Even Russell Westbrook took every penny that he had earned
(09:36):
in Oklahoma City. Everybody says, I want to win a championship.
Are you willing to take five million dollars less per
year ort to win a championship? Now asking it from
somebody else, are you willing to come out the bench?
Would Mellow? Would Mellow say no? Alan Iverson No. So
I look at Golden State and I think they're willing
(09:58):
to sacrifice more, and I think that front office is
just smarter. What is lebrons long term plan with the Lakers?
Does he want Kawhi letter now? Maybe he'll try and
guard grab Clay Thompson next summer. We'll talk with Lee

(11:04):
Of course you authored uh the piece when when lebron
Or helped right the piece When lebron decided to go
back to Cleveland this time around, it was shorter and
more concise, more professional. He flies in on Saturday. Uh.
He has, under the cover of darkness, a three hour
meeting with Magic Johnson. He has breakfast in Brentwood, dignitary,
(11:27):
stopped by everybody wants him to pay attention. At some
point in time, he comes to a conclusion and he says,
called the Lakers. As he's boarding the plane to go
to Europe. Is that about right? Yeah, that's about right,
I should just written a hundred words and be done
with that. So I I think this was probably I mean,
I know this was his lean for a while. Um
and even you know, early that weekend, I actually once
(11:49):
thought it would even go faster than that. So, you know,
I think there were a lot of there were a
lot of arrows pointing him to Los Angeles, And but
I do wonder as he sits there on a boat
and Tally or wherever he is, you know, how much
he knew of what would come in aftermath here and
what does roster looks like now compared to the one
he might have signed up for. Okay, that's it's a
(12:09):
really good question. How much, say, does he want and
who's on this team? I don't know. I think a
lot of that in the past in Cleveland was overstated.
And I know, I know it's a popular kind of
train of thought that he was the general manager. And
clearly there were deals struck and players brought in who
were part of Rich Paul's agency. Uh So you can
see some of the you know, some of the influence
(12:31):
he might have exerted. But I also think there were
plenty of deals that he wasn't necessarily involved with it,
didn't want to be involved with. So how much of
he knew of the Lakers specific direction and specific names,
I don't know definitely generally. I'm sure that was part
of the talk he had with Magic Johnson. But you know,
what he was sort of telling the people close to
him is that this is a longer play and that
(12:52):
he sort of believes that the lure of the Lakers,
of Magic, having that extra that cap space, having some
of these young players either to develop or move, the
kind of all of that gave him enough confidence that
they would be able to establish something powerful, if not
this coming season, in subsequent season. What was he most
concerned about with the Lakers. I don't know he was.
(13:16):
It was expressed to me that he he wanted to
sit down with Magic, he wanted to kind of look
him in the eye. He wanted to, I think, talk
about direction of the team moving forward. But I don't
really think. I think it would have been very unlikely,
even when he came back to l A, even though
he met with the representation, met with the Sixers, for
him to go another way. It seemed like that was
(13:38):
just so much of where he was leaning. Um. But
I do you know, I do sort of wonder. I mean,
he's thirty three years old going on thirty four, and
even though he can profess to patients now, I do
sort of wonder what it looks like for him if
this team is what when you look at this team
right now, do what do you see? Do you see six?
Fifth in the West sticks? And what where do you
(14:00):
kind of put them? Because I don't know. Yeah, he
could say all the things you wants to say now,
but in February, Mark he's not really accustomed to being,
you know, on the bottom end of a conference. Yeah.
I mean again, it does though, depend on what he uh,
what he thought, like, what are you leaving behind in Cleveland?
(14:20):
Do we think we're They weren't the best team or
the second best team in the East this year. And
remember yes they beat Boston in Boston Game seven, but
boston't have their top two players. Like I do think,
I do think he understood that run was probably coming
to an end, and I and I and I understand
that some of this move was not just about basketball. Um,
but yeah, I think the middle of the of the
(14:41):
playoff pack is is reasonable, uh to middle to lower
end of the playoff pack. I mean, it depends upon
like everything else, injuries, cohesion, I I you know, it
still feels like there's one more move that they have
not made yet, and obviously that's the Kauai move, and
that would change everything. But as of now, it looks
like you could be a playoff team. Yeah. I just
(15:03):
know his expectations and maybe maybe he can tamper temper them,
and maybe Lakers fans can too. But I do wonder
what that experience would be like for him if it does,
if it does start off the way it looks like
it may. Uh, you know, even in Miami year one,
I know they weren't they didn't win the championship. It
didn't go perfectly. Cleveland, certainly there were issues along the
(15:24):
way that first regular season, but in general, those were
teams very much a contention. Those were teams that made
the finals. So yeah, and I know they're also so
much made of this outside interests in the Hollywood and
all vapid. This is still someone who when you're around
him and the team is losing, you feel it. There's
a real shadow around, you know, the hill cast over
(15:45):
the organization. If if it's not going well and you're
talking about a team where they're trying to develop young
players and create a positive culture. That's where I wonder
is their impetus to get the cow I deal done
now that you don't want to start his tenure off
in l A as a sixth seed or whatever it
might be. Um, And that's because I know that logically
(16:07):
you'd say, well, wait right, you don't need to give
up anything for him in a year, but you might
be sacrificing kind of his start. Um. I offered up
to start the show Lee Jenkinson Sports Illustrated as an
incredible job covering the NBA, joining us Doug Gotlip show
Fox Sports Radio. I offered up that maybe the missing
part of the Warriors adding DeMarcus Cousins discussion is this
(16:31):
is the second time Kevin Durant. Though it's not huge
about some money to him, he's taken less money in
order to make it work. Um, here's Durant, a guy.
Here's here's Durant who who won m v P in
Oklahoma City, obviously left a really good team, had been
to the finals once, and all he's done is take
less money. Two different contracts, win two finals, m vps
(16:54):
win two championships. It kind of feels like that part's
getting undersold as part of this deal. Yeah, I'd undersell
it to I understand that that's been the net result
of this deal. Uh, And it's a it's a great storyline.
I do think he really wants the flexibility, and if
I think he will, it's hard for me to believe
(17:15):
that he won't at least take a look around next
year if it even if they win the championship again,
even if he has one big finals game or wins
finals m v P. At some point I think that
he may want to go somewhere and front of franchise again.
I mean, there were there were some moments this season
there that there were people around Golden State and even
(17:35):
within that team who wondered if he would be back.
So I also think he wanted to leave himself a
little bit of flexibility. No I I I get that, Um,
but tell me the other guy who's taken less money
he would have preferred if he signed longer. I'm sure
And even if they didn't have the money for DeMarcus Cousins,
(17:56):
you're but you're right, and the end result is he
has given them the It's it's kind of a It's
worked both ways for him, right, He's been a service,
flexibility and help the team. So right they got I
mean they I don't know if they would have gotten
Iguodala deal done, or the living Ston deal done or
or this deal is done. Um, what about the Boogie
Cousins thing? I know, Twitter, NBA Twitter when crazy, But
(18:17):
the fact is he has been a problem wherever he's been.
He is coming off an Achilles tendon injury, and this
is one of the few places to which they don't
need him for most of the regular season. They need
him for the playoffs. Um, it feels like this was this,
This was the only choice for a bunch of reasons.
What's how are NBA people really reacting to the news today?
(18:39):
Why did players are players are probably reacting with more
doom and terror because it's Boogie Cousins. There's still a
ton of respect for him as far as the overall talent,
and you just think about five all stars on the floor.
You know, probably people who are more behind the scenes,
more analytically based. Yeah, they'll they'll wonder about fit and
(19:01):
overlap and if he is given these coming off and achilles.
We all know how damaging that injury can be. Will
it prohibit him from playing their style, uh, the way
that they like to play it. So all of those
are the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, but
it's still it's still a tremendous talent, and it's the
one position where they're always vulnerable. And now you're adding
(19:25):
a guy who on i mean, think of their second unit.
Even if they just kind of play through him when
Curry is sitting or Durant sitting, it just it allows
there's never a break. I mean, there's never a break
against them anyway. But on the offensive end, it just
gives them another another toy to play with. What do
you think happens with Kauai? You know, I think that
(19:46):
that situation is so tricky because of his his reluctance
to communicate just in general. And so we're going to
have to figure out this person, have to figure out
how he really feels about Philly and Boston because if
it is if he is adamant that he will not
resign there, or if he says sends that message and
he rarely and this has coming kind of the issue
(20:07):
with him is he rarely sends virtual messages. Will rarely
sort of speak up about what his actual desires are.
A lot of it's sort of hard to interpret or
it comes from behind the scenes with him. But to me,
that's that's a huge question. If he's willing to at
least give those teams a shot, well, then this becomes
you know, the Spurs can drag this out, they can
(20:28):
look for leverage, They'll have leverage with the Lakers. If
he won't, then I feel like you have to go
ahead and just make the deal with the Lakers now.
And but I'm what I'm curious with the Lakers is
is it only going to take one of those core
guys like Ingram or Kuzma or will it take two?
And that's a question I haven't really been able to
get a straight answer on. I don't I don't think
(20:50):
they'll give up to I think I think they would
give up to players. I don't think they would give
up to core guys like Heart. Yeah, like Josh Hart
was Josh Hart would be one that they wouldn't want
to give up, but they might Ingram. They probably would,
remember Ingram's was drafted by a different regime, and as
much as they like him, I'm not sure they love him.
They love Kuzma, especially for what they're going to need
(21:11):
with Lebron and if they have Kauai. So I think
the whole that that part is uh is fascinating. Well,
that's right, they need shooting and those two guys the
least can shoot, you know, and Lebron, right, I mean
you you know a better than I do. It seems
like the teams the Unite Lebron's on that really succeeded
are the ones with a lot of shooting, their ones
(21:32):
with guys just like Ingram and Kuzma really right, more
veteran guys though, But yes, he he wants shooting so
that he has the space because you know, one guy
can't keep him out of the lane or keep him
from the rim. Right, So that's a that that's but
which is interesting because they went out and got JaVale
McGee and Rondo who probably aren't starters, but are also
aren't guys that stretched the floor in anyway. What do
(21:53):
you think of that? Like? Is that just as far
as the team dynamics, I mean, they gave those young
guys a lot of leash, a lot of confidence, and
now it seems like they're squeezing them. They're getting guys
who may squeeze them, or at least we'll they will
push them in practice in a way that, you know,
maybe uncomfortable at times like where do you fall on?
What the right thing to do is developing kind of
(22:13):
young potential stars. I don't mind it because I think
what I've been told is, hey, they want Yes, they
want guys that are high basketball i Q really good
basketball players, can do everything, guard both positions, play multiple positions.
But they also know that they want to have guys
that are just dogs, competitors, and I think that's I
think all three of them. Javail probably not as competitive
(22:36):
as the other two, but Land, Stevenson, Rondo. If there's
if there's a flaw, it's probably that they're too competitive.
Neither is a great shooter, but seriously competitive at both
ends of the floor. And I think Lebron will be
drawn to that. Do they need more shooting, Yeah, they
do need more shooting. They drafted two shooters, but they're
just rookies. Um. But I would say that's kind of
the working philosophy, is that they want to use this
(22:59):
first year to find out who's got that kind of
inner self tough inner toughness, so that by year two,
when they add another piece or two pieces, that they
already know who's who and what's what, and they get
rid of the guys that don't have it. That that
seems to be working through. I mean, it's kind of
an old fashioned approach is to bring in Rondo. I
don't know the Rondo is going to be. And maybe
(23:20):
he will, maybe he'll mentor him. I mean, obviously true
Holiday thrives alongside Rondo, but it seems like they're bringing
him into pushball, right, yes, yes, yeah, I mean listen
ball ball, whatever they say publicly, I mean, he only
played fifty two games. He heard his knee, then he
heard his knee. Now, um, he didn't shoot it. Well,
(23:42):
he works hard. They like him work harder. What better
way to get him going than a guy who could
start to pinch. Truth be told, Rondo should be a
really good bench guard who can play and who can
start in a big spot. And I don't think Lonzo
Ball plays every game next year. But fifty two games
is not enough? Not enough? Yeah, all right, what what
about Houston? They were so close and I know they
(24:04):
re signed Chris Paul, but losing areasa and I think
they'll keep Capella, but they might not. It sure feels
like they've lost a little momentum. I would think they
would keep Capella. I know they have lost momentum a reason.
I think it's easier. People will kind of look at
the shooting stats in that last game and the gods,
that's okay, but there's a there's a pretty big drop off.
I mean, as far as a three and D wing,
(24:25):
the kind of player that really made Houston what it was,
which was better than a very credible defensive team, A
guy who could shoot um, a guy who kind of
helped that locker room I think had great history with
Chris Paul. Yeah, it's a it's a big loss, and
I'm I'm kind of surprised that they let it happen.
I don't think they'll let Capella get away, but clearly
(24:45):
the Warriors have only solidified their standing in between, and
Boogie's part of it. But I think I'd argue that
the reason loss may in some ways be bigger, a
bigger boon of the Warriors than the Cousins game. That
might be. I don't know, maybe that's too much. No, No,
I kind of I agree with you he did a
great job on They're gonna have to They're gonna have
to beat Kevin Durant in order to in order to
(25:08):
win a championship, And the reason was it was one
of the few guys that seemed to do a great
job on Kevin Durant. And he's won NBA championship before,
so he's been there. He just had one terrible shooting
game when they couldn't afford to have him have that
terrible shooting game. You think if he makes shots in
that game and they hold onto him, do you think
it's it's that I don't think so. I just I
(25:31):
just don't know. I don't know where they are with
I guess I'm torn. Right if you're gonna pay two
and a half billion dollars for a team who cares
about paying some money in luxury tax, right, But it
does feel like that they they may have thought that
missing shots was a sign that he was getting closer
to over the hill. But I don't know, like, yeah,
I mean, look, if you win that game, it's really
hard to not bring everybody back, right right, Well, yeah,
(25:52):
because you're right, you're in the finals. No, I know,
I'm just I just wonder if it and it looks
it's a new owner, you never know. I think probably
people can think one way about an owner, and he
might have it seems like all the money in the world,
and then he gets in there and doesn't necessarily operate
the basketball team the same way. I mean, it's hard
to jump to conclusions on that. We'll see with Capella.
I just I just cannot imagine them letting Capella go.
(26:14):
I mean, he's he's everything for D'Antoni in terms of
the screening and the rolling, and that guy plays. He
plays as hard as any big in the NBA. I
just can't imagine them letting him, letting him slide as
of today? Am I crazy to think if you gave
me Celtics and Warriors and I and or the field,
I would take Celtics and Warriors or the field. Wow?
(26:38):
Um yeah, I guess the only other team that would
be a threat there would be Philly. Uh No, I
think you're right. I think that sounds right. I do
think it will be interesting in Boston. I mean, this
will be a different Obviously, it's a challenge everybody wants.
But just when you have this many good players having
to sort it out this many guys who were able
to assert themselves last year when Hayward Nerving were out,
(27:00):
and now we're going to have to take more diminished
roles like finding a way to keep all of those
guys happy and like Brad Stevens, is not a way
to do pretty much everything there. So I'm sure clearly
it's a luxury, but i do think they have. Yes,
you hear some NBA teams say sometimes you know too
and too many good players. You know, when you don't
have those kind of elite one but you have a
(27:21):
lot of good players that can kind of present its
own string of challenges. Lea great stuff. Excellent work on
the on the lebron piece yet again, can't wait to
read what you got for us next to Sports Illustrated
the Rate, Lee Jenkins Link, Lee, thanks so much for
joining us. Thanks. Let's check in on David Gascon, find
out what's going on in the world. Come. We've got
(27:43):
lots of things going on right now. England and Columbia.
They're getting late and England is up. Attention belts. Yes,
take that, thank you, said China once more, still able
on the PK. He's got six goals now in this
(28:03):
World Cup action so far around the sixteen. England leads
Columbia one to nothing. Earlier today Sweden and Switzerland Forresburg
toivet In has support back in starting opening goal only goal.
Swed In advances to the quarterfinals for the first time
(28:25):
since nineteen They do it beat in Switzerland one to nil.
Again all the actions available on Fox England and control
of this match one nothing over Columbia. They entered the

A couple of notes on players getting suspended San Francisco
Footy and I was Reuben Foster has been fined and

for the first two games for the same infractions. Moving
on over the NBA, couple of notes, they're Rockets have
soned Michael Carter Williams to a one of year contract.
Clippers have grabbed free agent Avery Bradley and signed him
to a two year deal or twenty five million dollars.
And then at Wimbledon today, Raphael Madalla Novak joke, which
(29:09):
both won their first round matches in straight sets. A
lot on the table, Doug back to you, Hey, David
Doug out Live show, Fox Sports. Trade you half past
top of every hour. We get you, We get you updated. Man,
there's lots of interesting stuff. Did you guys, did you
guys see this story? And do you know the story
(29:30):
in Thailand music with the soccer team. I am aware
of it, but I don't can't say that I'm well
versed other than I know they went missing and they've
been found in the cave and they are working on
a plan to try and get them back safely. Yes.
So there's a cave in Thailand and a group of
(29:50):
soccer boys and their coach are stuck in this cave.
But they're okay, and they were and they were down
there for quite a while, right. They were just tw
well boys and their soccer coach. They got trapped by
flash flooding in a cave in Thailand for nine days.
Nine days. The Thai Navy seals who knew said a
(30:11):
unit of seven divers had reached the boys in this cave,
including a doctor and a nurse, and reported none of
those trapped were in serious condition. Wow. Heavy rain is
forecast for next three days, which could threaten an air
pocket where the group was found. Rescue teams are pumping
water out of the caves, but it is not thought
(30:34):
possible to pump out enough water to get the boys
out without having to use scuba diving equipment. Most of
the boys are unable to swim and a small and
the small underwater passages make it difficult to exit, even
for experienced divers. But that's crazy. They were down there
for nine days and they're all fine as of now. Uh.
(30:58):
And then I saw this one yesterday or is that
to stay tuesday? Yet? Today? In Thailand, the military suggested
the boys would have to learn to dive or face
having to survive for up to four months in the
caves while they waited for floodwaters to survive. Like what,
some of these kids can't swim. Are they gonna learn
to dive? Or they gonna have to sit down there
(31:19):
for four months? Um. The group is called the Wild
Boars there from eleven to sixteen. They went missing on
the twenty three of June. When they were found, they
were on a rock shelf four kilometers from the mouth
of the cave, so two and a half miles. They're
said to be half a mile beneath the surface. Wow,
(31:41):
that's a that's a bummer. Huh. So I guess like
this is one of those deals when you get out,
when you when you get out, you're gonna have there's
gonna be a movie done about you. But you're probably
never gonna go into a cave ever. Again, I don't know.
(32:01):
That is nuts night. But they were down there for
nine days and they're all like fine, and they don't
know how to get them out. It seems right, doesn't
It seem like, well, don't you just drill a hole?
But no, they're way down there. That is crazy, Romos.
You saw the story, didn't you did? Yes? I have
seen the story. It's very scary and sad. Both of
(32:22):
us have children, and I can't imagine our children stuck
in a cave for nine days in pitch darkness. It's
it's very scary. Yeah, And the police have said they're
gonna look into whether or not the twenty five year
old coach could face legal action for leading the boys
into a cave. Like, look, dude, I like, isn't spending
time in this cave enough? Now you're gonna take me
to jail for for doing this. It feels like double jeopardy.
(32:46):
It feels like double jeopardy. Man, that is amazing, amazing story.
I'm glad they're okay, and I hope they I'm sure,
I'm hoping, and I'm guessing that there's enough smart people
in the world. Some deo will figure out a way
to get him out of there. What are the chances
to Marcus Cousins plays more than one season with the Warriors.
I'll tell you of coming next. Car shopping can be

Doug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio. Every day this time
(33:29):
we like to get you caught up on the stories today.
We do so by bringing in David Gascon and playing
a game. Okay, this is game time side on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Summers here, which means it's time to
get to the ballpark, but without working without a working car, battery,
(33:49):
you have to watch from the couch. Luckily, auto zone
offers free battery testing, so you can be part of
the action with free services from auto zone. You can't
lose getting the zone. Auto Zone, David gascon, what's the
game today. Let's take a peek. We got one of
the chances. What are the chances? So let's go. We'll
kick things off. In the National Football League NFL insider
for Yahoo Sports, Charles Robinson is reporting the NFL is
(34:11):
pushing for a close to call in Kaepernick's collusion case
against the league. According to article seventeen the c b A,
which the NFL is used to try to close this case,
Kaepernick's team needs to prove that they have uncovered sufficient
evidence to continue the quarterback's action against the league. So, Doug,
one of the chances we have a decision on this
Kaepernick collusion case. Before the start of this teen campaign, oh,
(34:35):
before I started, chance, Uh, the Kaepernick team has said
there's some smoking gun, there's some big news. We've yet
to see it. And at some point that bluff is
gonna be called. Let's see what happens when, uh, when
when they flip over those cards. But chance, because if
they have something, the NFL will settle and to this
point they don't seem to have anything. Let's hope they
(34:57):
do this like in a week two or three preseason.
So this is it's something to talk talk about during
the preseason games. Let's switch on over now Major League Baseball.
Since his unceremonious departure from the New York Mets, Matt
Harvey has slowly improved during his time with the Cincinnati Reds,
and most notably, increasing his velocity, which had plummeted recently.
Why I was in New York, so MLB insider John
(35:18):
Hayman is reported now the Washington Nationals and the Cincinnati
Reds are and talks about a potential deal for Harvey. Doug,
what are the chances Harvey ends up on the Nationals
this season? I think pretty good. I think. Look, he's
he's regained the velocity in his fastball. He's with the
Reds that are going nowhere, and if you're the Nationals,
(35:38):
you're just gonna try and get his many arms as
you can for the postseason. Um and he he's not
always successful. He does it, but he does want the
ball in his hands. I'm gonna go alright, alright, back
to the hardwood court in the NBA. The big news
from yesterday, and obviously you've been covering it throughout with
your show, was DeMarcus Cousins going to the Golden State
Wars on a one year deal. Doug, what are the
(36:00):
chance his cousin fits in well with it Wars and
actually ends up playing more than just one season in
the Bay? M hm, not great? I would say, chance. Um, Look,
he wants a long term max deal. This is a
proved contract. I don't think it's great. Is there a chance? Yeah,
(36:22):
he could like it and resign for a one plus one?
I'll chance if he knocks it out of the park,
where do you see him playing after? Whoever, whoever the
highest bidder is all right a hired gun for the
time being. Perhaps the most surprising moving free agency was
Paul George, designed to stay in Oklahoma City to play
alongside Russell Westbrook in the Oklahoma City Thunder. And we
(36:43):
know he signed a four year contract that many people
have reported could actually turn into a seven year deal
in total after he opts out and resigns with Thunder
after three years. So, Doug, what are the chances Paul
George never plays for another team and retires in Okay.
See uh, Paul George eighty five percent chance he never
(37:05):
looks at another team, you know, because of the seven
years he's had the knees, had the ankle. And I
do from everybody I know in Oklahoma. I do some
radio calling into Oklahoma as well with Mark Rogers who
joined US. I I would just be honest, I I
I think, I mean, there's a guy I'd be stunned
if he plays seven more years, Right, You're probably gonna
play five or six more years then collect to check
(37:25):
the last. Yeah, I think it's pretty chance that's the
last team plays for all right, Well, speaking of playing
last night, seventies six or star, Joel am Bead, who's
known for his presence on social media, twittered out quote,
there's still time to change your mind, l O L
and quote let's pull a DeAndre and just trust it.
So without directly mentioning him, we can assume he's probably
(37:48):
talking about one Lebron James and referring to several years
ago when DeAndre Jordan committed to playing with the Mavericks
but then ultimately pulled out of a deal to resign
with the l A Clippers. Doug, what are the chances
Lebron James actually plays for the seventies sixers. I'll look,
I'll say one percent. I don't think it's happening. I
think he's already moved here. He's not even the country,
(38:08):
let alone on Twitter trolling to see what Joel Embid thinks. Uh,
but I'm gonna say one percent. Year this is game
time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. Yeah. I was surprised
by a couple of the moves that the Lakers made.
You know, I said this yesterday. I thought, for for
the money, why not JJ Reddick instead of k C.
(38:31):
P Right, k CP gives you a little bit more defense,
but not much, but not nearly the shooting of JJ
Reddick plus JJ comfortable in l A about the exact
same money. The only difference is who his agent is.
It's Lebron James his agent. Um. You know, I I
don't mind the Rondo deal. I think the issue with
(38:52):
Brondo is will he mentor Alonzo ball? Assuming a Lonzo
ball is the starter, will he work with him or
will he be a divisive force in that locker room?
I think Lebron can control him, but I don't know.
I don't Lebron's not. Some of you exercises great control,
but this is what happens when all you want to
do is offer a one year contracts, You're not going
to get the picks of the litter. That's the most
(39:14):
important part you can you can try and understand is
if you're gonna offer guys a one year deal, you're
not going to get the best of the best. I'm
not gonna get the best of the best. And they
want to keep themselves flexible for the future. Uh mc
tweets me at gottlieb show enjoy your work. But the
idea that Julius random wouldn't be useful worth matching the
(39:35):
cost of the New Orleans offers laughable. They can barely
as this field of starting five offensively. Randall does everything
well too good. With lb j's gravity on on d
it could it could definitely work well. He doesn't shoot
the ball well from three. You know, he's like a
seventeen eighteen footing in undersized center who doesn't defend the rim.
(40:00):
Oh the best player, but leaving scoring a bad team
doesn't make you a better team. Once you're trying to
become a good team. What's that? That that's really where
As JaVale McGee, as much as you may, you may
not think much of him because you saw him on
shacting a fool all those different times. Like JaVale McGee
has become a respectable NBA center who can start on
(40:21):
a championship team and just roll and block shots and
defend the rim, which is what Lebron James needs. And
of course you're doing it at just a fraction of
the normal price. Terrell Owens is going to speak the
day of his Hall of Fame induction. Where and why
and who? He reminds me of? Find out next? What
(40:42):
up to Godli Show, Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're
ready for a happy and safe fourth of July. I'm
your host, Doug Godli saw this story and I thought,
I thought there's a perfect parallel. Tarall Owens is going
to speak during the day in which he's gonna be
(41:06):
inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wow, this
is this is well, not exactly, not exactly. Uh Ara
Owens is gonna give a Hall of Fame speech at
u T chat that's the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, on
August four. He announced that earlier today, quote, after giving
(41:30):
a much thought, I have realized how much I want
to celebrate what will inevitably be the best weekend of
my life at a place that means so much to me.
He will not attend the Hall of Faming in uh
in trimon in Canton, Ohio. Uh. It also should be
pointing out this event is free, it's open to the public.
It starts at three sev pm. In other words, tera
(41:54):
Owens is going to be doing exactly what he would
have been doing in Canton, Ohio at exactly the same
time as others are in Kenton, Ohio, which proves the
exact reason that Taryll Owens is mad is the reason
that he should be mad, because they should do exactly
(42:16):
what they've done. They should have done it longer to
wasn't in the Hall of Fame, And all anybody could
say is, well, look at the numbers. But when did
football ever become about numbers? When was it ever about numbers?
A great football player was about championships and also about
(42:39):
like the definition of pornography. Right, Uh, you know what,
when you see it, that's the definition of a great
football player. There are any numbers that you can point to,
they just aren't. Is Jerry Rice the goat because the numbers? Yeah,
but it's also because of the Super Bowls, the big catches,
and the way in which he played Tarrell Owens big
(43:03):
defense was look at the numbers. But remember he was
the first of his kind. He was the first of
the new generation of wide receivers, catching away more balls,
being the focal poor and catching you know, being thrown
to ten to twenty times a game. When the rules change,
he benefited directly. But he is the Dwight Howard of
(43:25):
the NFL. Dwight Howard's the same spot based upon the numbers.
Dwight Howard is a Hall of Famer. But when Dwight
Howard's time to be in the Hall of Fame comes up,
Somebody's gonna sit there and go like, wait a second.
He blew up the Magic, He blew up the Lakers,
blew the Rockets, He blew the Hawks, and blew the Hornets.
(43:48):
All were better teams before he arrived, and the only
one that was different was Orlando, to which he saw
their rise and their fall. Eight time All Star, five
time first team on a one time second team on
NBA second, two time third team on B and I
know l NBA team sometimes comes out of position, but
he was the best center in the Eastern Conference for
(44:11):
almost a decade. He's currently out of work, but he's
absolutely based upon five time rebounding leader, two time blocks leader,
he's absolutely a a Hall of Famer in comparison to
Reggie Miller and Dominique Wilkins and even Tracy McGrady. But
(44:32):
how many teams does he have to blow up before
you go like, hey, maybe it's not just the team,
Maybe it's him. What about t L the Niners? The
Niners thing went up in smoke, The Eagles thing went
up in smoke. He was doing, you know, sit ups
and curls in the driveway, the Cowboys thing, the Bills thing.
(44:55):
Even now as he shows he can run a sub
four or five forty a man his age, it only
proves why he's not in the league is the same
reason he shouldn't be in the Pro Football Hall of
Fame has nothing to do with numbers. Any guy who thinks,
you know what, I'm gonna do a speech the same
(45:15):
day as a Pro Football Hall of Fame at the
same time that somebody else is going to be doing
a speech and thinks that's in any way acceptable. It
doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. I'm belonging. It's
the most t o move ever. I'm gonna speak at
the same time I would be speaking up there, only
(45:38):
I'm gonna do it. I got a closed circuit thing
at my college and a look at me and the
wide receivers play. Look at me when they get the ball,
look at me when I need a penalty. Look at
me that I got both two feed in. Look at
me when I celebrate scoring a touchdown. Football is a
team game, and it wasn't like he wanted to a
(45:59):
sell libration of all of his teammates. He wanted to
a celebration to himself, but he wanted to do it
to cast a shadow over that of the NFL who
all they would have done was promote Terrell Owens as
a Hall of Famer. The ceremony is about the class
of players who who emote class themselves, and this by
(46:22):
trying to overshadow or operate his own kind of ceremony,
he's showing a lack of class and respect for the
guys that are in his class. I'd have no problem.
They replaced him. Say he's not a Hall of Famer,
moved on, Like what you're not? You're mad about not
getting in? Okay, you can count on unless than you know,
(46:43):
you don't need many fingers to count wide receivers that
got in their first possible opportunity. Ramas to you a
fireworks guy, I do I do partake in fireworks. Uh
the city that I live in, you can't shoot off
safe and sane fireworks. Yes, Safe and same are also
called lame. Right. Yeah, I'm not throwing up the M
(47:05):
A d s and those the skyrockets. No, not with
not just blowing that, just blowing stuff up music? Are
you blow stuff got up? Guy? Not anymore. I haven't
lit off fireworks in several years. When I was younger, Yeah,
I mean I used to think that the big crazy
fireworks were a lot of fun. Uh. Now I just
live that paranoid lifestyle where I think I'm gonna get
(47:26):
the one defective one and I'm gonna lose some appendages. Yep, yep,
that's that's basically what happened. You're welcome the rest of
your life. Uh. Do you like you guys like fireworks shows? Yes,
I'm all for other people lighting on fireworks. Well no, no,
I'm done. Okay, do you like the you like the
traditional fireworks shows? Are the personal fireworks shows? Uh? Traditional?
(47:48):
Rama's Yeah. Traditional. I've done both our city Fireworks show
and the Rose Bowl, which is which is wonderful. So
you just go in the Rose Bowl and you sit
down and you watch fireworks. Yes, well, there's a lot
of stuff went on outside the Rose Bowl and they
have like, um, they have kids events, painting faces, you know,
all the stuff that kids can do. They have food,
(48:10):
it's got the carnival kind of and then at night
they you go into the Rose Bowl I think he
actually sits outside the Rose Bowl too and watch them.
But of course they have stuff on the field which
you can't see if you're outside. But but if you can't,
if you don't want to go in, you can watch
from the outside. They're really loud. Wouldn't it just be
better if they did the finale at the start, like,
just start with the finale, start with start with the end. Yeah,
(48:32):
start with the end, start with the end, and end
with the start. I don't know that. Just to me,
that feels like why are we why the finale is
so good, and I do like you know, um, I
I do like the build up. But there is one
thing about fireworks is like, man, I have seen this before.
And I live in Orange County and you can hear
(48:52):
every night at nine thirty the Disneyland fireworks. So it's
really not like, Okay, if we missed the fourth July fireworks,
I guess it's a bummer. But there'll be some are
works tomorrow night at Disneyland. We can see, you know,
off the deck of our house. Anyway, have you ever
had the dog that is afraid of fireworks? Um? No,
you know, I had Bassett Hounds for a long time
(49:12):
and um they're just kind of dopey them, and um
my dog. Now again this we just had this discussion
two nights ago my my angie, My wife says, uh, said,
do you think we're gonna have a problem with him
with fireworks? And I was like, there's fireworks every night.
It's like, well, they're not as close. It's like, I
don't like he would react to one of them, and
(49:35):
he doesn't react to any of them. So I think
it's I think he's built up a fireworks tolerance. Yeah, definitely.
Now you're you're totally right on that. I mean, I
know my dog is horrible with fireworks. And as soon
as because you know how people as soon as they
start putting fireworks on sale, like a month before the fourth,
people start lightening them off in their backyard just for fun.
(49:56):
I mean, it's a whole lead up to the fourth
of July and then even if few weeks after where
my dog is just constantly on edge. And yeah, you're
totally right where even when they're far off in the distance,
if it was going to be an issue, he would
have already reacted. It's not just going to be on
the fourth of July out of nowhere. Mm hmm. Fascinating. Um. Okay.
(50:18):
Also tomorrow, tomorrow's fourth July, So tomorrow's the Nathan's Hot
Dog Eating competition. All right, here's the big question eight
seven seven nine nine Fox. Big question for you Ryan Music,
and for you David gascon In, for you John Ramos.
One kind of food that you believe you could win
an eating contest? One kind of food? Um, that's my
(50:44):
question to you. Once you think of your answer. Okay,
Coming up next, Tory Lavolo is going to join the
show The Dodgers are are in chase and it's been
a weird year where Paul Goldschmidt, who's the perennial star
superstar for the Diamondbacks, has struggled, especially early in the year,
(51:06):
and yet there they sit a top first place. We'll
get his thoughts on We'll get his thoughts on what
what food he could eat and win an eating contest,
and maybe more importantly, his thoughts on his d Backs.
That's upcoming next where a day away from forth July
Lebron is in Los Angeles, Boogie Cousins is in Golden State,
and Dwight Howard still out of a gig and t
(51:28):
O is very much t O. This is the Doug

Here's Doug Godlieb. Car shopping can be confusing with terms

They enjoy more confident car buying experience. Hardest thing to
do in in sports, in life right is to do
something a second time. It's not that it's not hard
to climb the mountain, but to go climb the mountain
a second time. That's the challenge for the Arizona Dimebacks,
(52:11):
who do sit in first place in the NLS. Toy Lavolo,
who is of course last year's en i'l Manager the Year,
will join us uh momentarily here the Doug gott Leaves Show.
We see this all the time though, right, team has
a great year year before they were sixty nine and
ninety three see and uh, you know, changes are made
(52:33):
as Chip Hall ends up getting fired, Lavolo comes in
and they just turned things around, dramatically turn things around.
But it's been a while since they won a playoff series,
right that was you probably have to go back to
two thousand seven. I believe they won the World Series
(52:55):
in two thousand one. But this is a roster that
got a chance. They've lost four in rowd tour. Lavula
will join us uh in moments here on the Doug
Gotlip Show. Well, we'll catch up. We'll catch up with
the skipper of the time. Back yesterday we had Dave robertson.
I guess we're gonna work our way through the NLS
then just have all the managers on. Not a bad
idea there, Doug. Just have them all on all at
(53:18):
the same time. No, no, no, like one one by one. Okay,
can you at least name all the managers in the
NL West. There's there's one that's gonna be harder than
the wet rest, right, what do you got? What you
got there? Rama? Do you wanna try? Well? San Francisco
is Bruce Bocci Colorado? Oh boy, they were just a
(53:40):
Dodger stadium too. I not top of my head. I
don't know. Sorry, is Bud Black, isn't it? Okay, it's
it is. I think you're right as Buddy Black. Yeah.
And San Francisco and San Diego we talked about this. Yeah,
do you remember? You remember we literally did this. I
was San Diego and it's been a couple of months now,
(54:02):
and I'm like, Andy Green, come on, we didn't have
we did we did not have any Green? Huh. I
just want to tell him I love him. I love
Andy Green, You love Andy Green. I can't remember his name,
and I apologize, Okay, Uh so yeah, I mean look livelo.
(54:25):
I would say I would say the hardest one to
name because I think you might not be able to
pick out what team Jim Riegelman managers. Remember the Reds
made a change to start the year, but Jim Riegelman
is their manager. Joe Madden you'd remember. Mickey Callaway. I
think a lot of people know, just because the Mets
have been in the news. Clint Hurtle, you'd remember he
(54:48):
used to be with the Rockies. Mike Matheny still with
the Cardinals. Dave Martinez of course as the Gnats. I
would say that Brian Stitker would be the one first
place Atlanta Braves that people would have the most problem
going live if you if Brian Snitker sat down next
to you on a plane, would you know who he was?
(55:10):
Let's ask Terry Lavolo, of course, is uh, who's the
manager of a toy? Lavolo? Who's the manager of the
first place in the n L West Arizona Diamondbacks. Did
you know stit Curve before he became skipper of the Braves?
I did? I sure did, and he um I managed
against him when he was a manager in Richmond, probably
in two thousand eight nine. Is and oh, oh, we
(55:37):
gotta we gotta make an adjustment here. We we've been
waiting on toy Lavolo. We don't want to let his
cell phone let us down. You want to uh music.
You want to make an adjustment there and ask him
to make sure we get to a place where he
has as many bars as possible. All Right, all right, good,
that's that's what he's doing to Lavelo is too good.
The annil manager the year can't be on a bad
cell phone. That just can't do that. That that that
can't happen. All right, will effort for him. We'll find out.

are in a four game losing streak. All right, he's
in the car. You got us on bluetooth though, right,
I do I do? Maybe? No, No, absolutely. Um, there's
a bunch of what was what was the conversation like
between you and Yadi here Molina last time you met
(56:20):
up with the Cardinals? I know there's a shouting match.
How do you? How do you? How do you? How
do you? How do you handle that? At batting practice? Yeah,
you know the contest in which more discussed. I just
rather keep between Yaddie and I. But um, you know,
look he I made a mistake. I you know, used
some forceful language. Um wasn't necessarily directly to him, but
(56:42):
I referred to him and in a way that was
a little too, a little too aggressive, and I felt
like I needed to I needed to just make sure
that I let him know that I made that mistake.
So um, you know, he's the best catcher, one of
the best catchers in and the National League, and I
just felt like it it was a more happenstance. I
saw him there. I thought it was the right thing
(57:03):
to do. Oh right, So you didn't go to ATHENI
and clear with him, like, hey, I'm gonna talk, because
you know some of some guys like, don't talk to
my guy. Don't talk. He didn't. You didn't have to
clear with ATHENI, did you No? No, No, I did not. Um,
you know, I took it upon myself. I shouldn't want
to miss that opportunity. And it's been some time and
I felt like the emotions were removed from it and
it kind of gone away. But it was something that
(57:24):
I felt like I needed to take care of. And
you know, it's Mike ever wanted to talk to one
of my players, and in the same situation, I would
not I would not get in the way. But uh, um,
like I said, I just thought it was the right
thing to do. What would you, well, how would you
characterize the state I know, you guys lost four in
a row. You got swept by the Giants who were
sitting there two and a half back. We talked with
Dave Roberts yesterday about their resurgence. Course, they're getting healthy.
(57:49):
But look, look this, it's not like you guys have
been playing bad. You know, you go back before the
losing streak and I think he'd won seven out of eight.
How would you characterize the state of your team today? Well,
I feel like we're we're the same team that we were.
We were turning from a really good road trip and
things have not changed whatsoever. That's one of the characteristics
that we walk around with every day. I think that
we're we're tough, we're resilient and times uh and times
(58:13):
like this. We walked through a really tough May and
I think we learned a little bit. We learned a
lot about ourselves, and um we got stronger and kept
together and and um became even a more cohesive unit.
So times like this, I feel like we have something
that we can reference and and go to and know
that these guys are ready to go today and nothing changes.
That's the beauty of this team. They they accept winning
(58:35):
and losing. They know what they have to do. On
days where um, things have knocked one well, they had
just been get ready for the next day and much
of the same when we win and getting to get
on a nice treat. They don't let it go to
their heads. So we're somewhere in the middle between really
good or really bad. And that's that's the beauty of
this team. They're very consistent every single day. And you
get a J back, that's gotta you get your center
fielder back. I mean, that's just kind of in the
(58:55):
Nicota a J back grinky on the hill. Uh, seems
teams like that's that's a j Being back is a
huge thing for this team in this to end this
losing streak. I agree, um, and he was he was
the April Player of the Month in the National League,
So that should tell you what what type of caliber
player we're getting back. And last night was his first
(59:16):
night back, but just feeling him in the clubhouse, his
presence in the clubhouse, being able to pencil in his
name to the starting lineup. It was very refreshing and uh,
you know, you hit on another guy and Zach Greggy
he's been so consistent, so good for us, and he
takes the mounting. He gives us a great chance to
win every fifth day. And that's what you want your
ace to do. He's a guy that we we build
our staff around. He accepts our responsibility and uh, he
(59:37):
execuse a great game fan. So you know we're gonna
we're gonna digest what happened yesterday and let that go
and come out today and give it our best effort. Um. Look,
Nick has been good at at shortstop, but there's there's
there's a potential shortstop that's out there available. Can't mention
any names. What what like? What's what's it like to
(59:58):
know that there's a possibility of making a big edition?
How do you how do you handle that on the
daily But you have to manage the egos of men.
You have to encourage them. You know, the chatter about
the potential to bring somebody in, how do you manage
that tory? Well, you know, I think these guys understand
that this is this is what the game is all about.
And in one day you can be sitting next to
(01:00:18):
somebody in the club house and it's cut out and
the cutouts and the next day they're they're they're gone
in another organization. That's just that's accepted in in the norm,
in in the sports world, and it's very very unfortunate.
But the one part of that whole equation is our
front office. Every single day, whether we make a trade
at the trade deadline, or whether we do it now
or at the beginning of the season or in the
off season, our front office is always searching for ways
(01:00:41):
to make us better. So, yes, we're aware of potential trades.
We hear things just like everybody else, and um, it's
it's great. It's great that you know everybody has to
say and what's going on. But I have the total
faith in what our front office does every single day
because I get a chance to watch them work and
I know how hard they do there just um how
hard they work their job and never let down. So
(01:01:02):
if something is there to make us look better, make
a better I know they're not gonna hesitate to make
them make dot move. The the the two thousand and
seventeen n L Manager of the Year toward the Volo
joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox
Sports Trader, your native is so cal Uh, Santa Monica
to u c l A. But you, when you grew up,
didn't you go to John Wooden's camp as basketball camp?
(01:01:24):
I sure did. I'm a proud of southern California boy,
and um I went to u c l A. And
and I'm so proud of my association and to that
school and John Wooden. You know, he built such a
great legacy there, so obviously there's a huge attachment to me,
the school and John Wooden. Okay, so, but no, you
did you did you go to his camp when he
was a kid? Was that at cal Lutheran? Was that
(01:01:44):
U c l A. I went to this campus at
cal Lutheran. I'm wondering which one you went to. Oh
my gosh, it's so funny. No, Um, I went to
the one of Pepperdine. I think I went for two
knsecutive summers, and uh yes, I'm gonna stand firm that
was Pepperdine University both times. I So the story I
heard was story he made an example of you in
front of the whole camp. Is that accurate? He did,
(01:02:07):
but he had such a gentle way about him. He
he uh. He called me over. I had actually been
tying my shoes, probably a couple of times, as young
kids do that. Um. He called me over after the
second time. And obviously I must have been just like
running the court because I stood out right. I mean,
I was the guy. And he said to me. Uh,
he called me over and said, you know, I just
(01:02:29):
want to give your heads up and every time you
stopped to tie your shoes that your opposition is getting
an edge and getting rest, and your teammate is playing
your team is playing one man down. He goes double
not your shoes, and don't ever let that happen again.
So to this day, I double not my shoes. It's
just a habit that I developed from that day forward.
That's pretty cool. Tory Lovelo joining us on the doug
(01:02:51):
Otlip Show. Do you use the B quick but don't hurry?
I used that with my son to use that. Is
that a woodenism or is there any other woodenisms you use?
You know what? You you hit the big one right
on the head. Um, and my father threw up my
my entire upbringing. UM used that exact saying, and I
didn't know where it came from, but I used to
hear it, probably heard of a thousand times. Be Quick,
(01:03:12):
don't hurry, Tory, be quick, don't hurry, and and you know,
fast forward until you know. I go to college and
I start really getting into the John Wooden you can
see this quote, his famous quote, be quick, don't hurry.
So I realized that I was at U c l A.
And I felt that presence. But I knew that my
dad had been using this line on me, my, my
entire life. So it's a great line. It says it't
(01:03:33):
perfectly Um, okay, I gotta figure out. I gotta figure
out what happened with with Goldie right he was, I
mean with seven home runs through the first three months
of the season. I know you barely played March, but
then just exploded in June, I mean exploded and it's
continued on here in July. Did he change something after?
I mean one forty four in the month of May.
(01:03:55):
Here's a perennial All Star based on the numbers. This
guy should be in Cooper Town when he's finished. If
he continues at this pace, what do he what did
he do to get things right. Well, I really I
appreciate you saying that I'm a huge Paul Goldchmian fan,
and you're right, I think, but when this is all
said and done, he's gonna have some huge numbers at
the end of his career. And I feel that strongly
(01:04:16):
about him as well. But I feel like, you know,
every every player can go through uh slumps and and
superstars are not exempt from that. They they have the
same emotions, the same feelings, and the same um uh
swing mechanical breakdowns as as a young player in the
minor league. So I think he just was probably showing
(01:04:37):
a lot of hustle, a lot of a lot of
hurry to a swing in the month of May where
he was making some some mistakes and when he would
get a good pitch to hit, unfortunately he would follow
it off or he wouldn't put it in play. And then, um,
you know, if you turned the calendar from one month
to the next, even though it's still the same game
and it's still the next day, it's like being on
the front nine and turned the page and being on
(01:04:58):
the and starting your your second second halfier round on
the back night, he just kind of refreshed, turned the calendar,
turned the month over, and on June the one scene,
things seemed to really really turn over for him. And
he's been a great hitter ever since. You know, there
was one thing I was looking at Goldie and trying
to figure things out. Um, he hits over five three
one counts. Now he's only seen nine of them all
(01:05:20):
all year, but he had two home runs and I
know it like look and and and he look. He
walked eleven times as well. So but so do you
green light him? Does he green light everything? How does
it work with a guy of of of his skill
set and his success level three one count who makes
the call? Well, no, he does. I mean that's a
hitter's count. Everybody lives for the three one count. And UH,
(01:05:43):
to be honest with you, when when guys get a
three oh count, I I turned him loose and let
them make the decision. I basically know the guys who
who I'm gonna pull back from or the guys that
are going to automatically take three and oh but three
one you work so hard to get to that count.
Goldie's gonna Goldie's gonna fire away and and and probably
not miss on a three one count. But that's good
information right there. You're right, all good hitters should be
(01:06:06):
driving the ball. All good hitters should be um not
missing and swearing up a ball with a three one count.
That's the one that you're working hard to get to.
And I think during that month of May he probably
got into some good hitters counts two oh one, oh
uh three oh. And he wasn't necessarily firing and putting
the barrel on the ball, but now he is, and
that's been the big difference. Well, let's see if you
(01:06:27):
can get things turned around to night obviously helps when
he got grinky on the hill at home at Chase Field,
I know you're driving to I know you're you're you're
driving to work a couple of nights ago. Um uh
atan DeAndre Ayton throughout the first pitch and when he
when he walked up there, you're like, the last dude
that tall to be thrown on that hill was left
(01:06:48):
handed with a mustache and a mullet. There had to
be a curiosity like I just I want to see
what this guy does. Did you know he'd never thrown
a baseball before that? I was aware of that that
that's uh that is pretty impressive. And he threw a
ball that was pretty pretty close to the strike zone.
So yeah, I saw that him. He was a very
imposing figure. When you stood next to him, you just
you cannot imagine how big this man is. It's pretty impressive.
(01:07:11):
Knowing that he's as agile as he is and he
can pick up a baseball for the first time and
throw a strike, that should tell you him about his ability.
You know. I had this deep conversation with UH, with
a couple of people about why there's so much more
power pitching in baseball now as opposed with the steroids
out of the game or mostly out of the game,
and UH and and the the consensus from baseball guy was, Hey, nowadays,
(01:07:36):
look look at the Yankees starting pitchers and they're all,
you know, six three to six ft seven, six ft eight,
Whereas back in the day those guys were a first
baseman or a catcher. There was the thought that they
were they were they were too big to be pitchers.
Pitchers were smaller. Is that the reason that power pitching?
What what's the logic behind why there's so much more
power pitching in baseball? Well, that's a good question, you know, um,
(01:07:59):
you know, obviously twenty years ago when I can reference
it and remember playing guys you know through and now
that seemed to be about the average, and then all
of a sudden jumped up to you and not Now
that's pretty consistent. You see really good arms coming out
of the bullpen. You see good starting pitching. I think
that baseball has become very specific, and um, these these
(01:08:21):
athletes when they're younger, they get very points specific muscles
that they need to train, get the proper range of motion,
and and there's a science to it. Now. Back uh,
you know, several years ago, I'm sure somebody just picked
up a baseball in their backyards started throwing it. They
had good arm strength. They continue to improve that as
they got more innings. But these kids now today can
(01:08:41):
really start to generate some arms and uh, some good
power fourteen or fifteen years old, and then they begin
to work on that, fine tune that and get very specific.
So by the time they're in high school or maybe college,
they're throwing ninety miles an hour. And they get into
pro ball and they get on a program and it
continues to upgrade. So it's amazing the velocity that you
(01:09:01):
see now is something that I never would have predicted.
It's a pretty impressive feat when you see an entire
bullpen throw. Well, Zach was Zach was dialed in last
time around. I think seventy three out of a hundred
and three were strikes. We'll see if he has the
same efficiency tonight. Best of luck against the Cardinals, and
thanks so much for your time, Okay, Doun, I'll talk
to you you to by bye. Ally it's Terry Lavola, who
(01:09:22):
of course Toy Levola, who's Tory is the manager of
the year last year in the National League. They're in
first place, a little bit of a losing streak. Joining

world of sports. David what he got Doug speaking of
the yard Columbia and England right now on extra time. Trauma, Hey, Tom, Trauma,
(01:10:08):
No come to That was the equalizer in stoppage time
for Columbia's. They've locked things up at one one. It's
nearing the end of extra time. Two teams like they're
gonna score off in p ks. All the extra now
is available on Fox. Speaking of that earlier today, Sweden
advances to the quarterfinals the first time since ninety four.
They're doing so after dispatching Switzerland one to nil. In
(01:10:31):
Major League Baseball, there's two games in progress, one just
underway Twins and Brewers from Milwaukee. But the Cuds were
down a couple of times the Tigers, and now they're
tied three three. Jason Hayward is one for three in
the contest with a run batted in. In the NBA,
and Denver has traded Wilson Chandler and a draft consideration
to the Philadelphia seventies six ers. Adrian war Janowski is
also reporting Tyrek Evans is finalizing a deal with the
(01:10:54):
Indiana Pacers on a one year contract. Doug, back to you,
all right, Speaking of NBA players, did you guys watch
any of the NBA Summer League last night? I I
do feel sometimes like I'm a I'm like one of
those guys. I'm I'm like here I am. It's a
beautiful night. I got no kids. My wife and I
(01:11:15):
went on a quick little date night. We actually did
a yoga class together. We come back like, what do
you want to do? We had started binge watching the
Americans music? Did you recommend for me the Americans last year?
I can't remember somebody? Yeah, you know what, Doug, I
actually did not. Okay, have you seen it? Have you
ever watched American? Uh? Your Netflix guy and Amazon Prime guy? Yeah? Okay,
(01:11:41):
well actually hold on, let me let me take that back.
My girlfriend is so by proxy. I sometimes your girlfriends
your girlfriend bootlegged as well. No, it's it's hers. She
has I pay for Hulu. She has the Netflix and
Amazon Prime. Alright, cool, cool enough? Um, yeah, if you
want the want to give up that Hulu account, let
me know. Because I don't have Hulu. I could Hulu
(01:12:04):
doesn't they have technology that prevents it. Yeah, because like
we've we've been uh in separate places like if I'm
traveling or whatever, and it'll say, um, more than one
user on this account right now, and so one of
the two isn't allowed to stream. Well, that just means
you have to do it at different times. That doesn't
mean you know right now. Now now with with Netflix,
(01:12:27):
it's it. Uh, there's just a certain number of them, right,
does anybody know how many? I think it's six doug
six of them, six six people at once. After that,
it's locked you out. I I get the sense that nowadays,
like back when we were kids, you'd right, a girl
you broke up with number on the bathroom wall. Now
you write a girl you broke up with Netflix code
(01:12:50):
in the bathroom wall. Right, that's that's that's the way
it works. Wait, Trey Young struggle last night, one of
eleven from three, four of twenty from the field. Um,
it was, Look, it's just one game, like Jaren Jackson
hitting eight threes and he kind of shoots a curveball.
It's just one game. And so I'm not gonna sit
here and and snicker in any way, because I genuinely
(01:13:11):
do like the kid and am rooting for him. But oh,
that was not a that was a tough look. And
look it is. It is summer League. He'll be giving
tons of chances to fail. I still think he has
probably the best shot of being the rookie of the
year because Atlanta is not trying to be good just yet.
They are going to give him the ball and let
him and he'll have some games where he hits a
(01:13:32):
bunch of shots and they weren't all terrible shots, and
he's a very good passer. But that's an oof. That's
one of those ones that can kind of spiral a
little bit on you if you if you don't knock
some down the second day, get to the free to
the line, but the the settling for thirty five footers
(01:13:52):
that can become troublesome. Colin Coward thinks the Packers are
going down the same road as the Cavaliers. You'll hear
from him and I'll give you my thoughts now. Next

(01:14:34):
AutoZone offers free battery testing, so you can be part
of the action. With free services from AutoZone, you can't
lose getting the zone Auto Zone. Here's Colin Cowherd earlier
today talking about the end of le Bronze time with
the Cavaliers. Hey, it was a good run. Not really.
Cleveland screwed it up. Cleveland screws everything up. Eleven seasons
(01:14:56):
with the best basketball player in the world one title.
By the way, he went to Miami four years, two titles.
Do the math. That's way better. This illustrates the utter
dysfunction of Cleveland. Eleven years, one title and he leaves
you for the second time. By the way, this is
(01:15:18):
happening with Green band Aaron Rodgers, best player in the world,
ten years, one title and now, by the way, Minnesota.
The Vikings in your own division has a star in
every unit. They have a star corner, a star safety,
a star pass rush or a star linebacker, star running back,
a star receiver. Cleveland's dysfunction screwed this up. When you
(01:15:40):
get a Lebron and an Aaron Rodgers, you don't waste
any time. You overpay for GMS, you overpay for talent evaluators,
you overpay for scouts, you overpay for a head coach,
you overpay for assistance, you overpay for position coaches. Um. Look,
there's some there's some thing to some of that. It
(01:16:02):
should be pointed out that Cleveland got a new practic
facility when Lebron was there the first time. State of
the Art was the best in New League when it opened,
They redid their arena, and though he never had a
Hall of Fame caliber coach, some of that is Hey,
it's not like Lebron needed a Hall of Fame caliber
coach or the Spoonster was at the point in time
(01:16:24):
which she coached him to a championship. UM. As far
as town evaluators, it would be a novel concept to
overpay for talent evaluators. They did miss on some draft picks,
but it also gives a little bit of credence to
Magic Johnson's idea of doing it, which is, Hey, drafting
(01:16:44):
the team and building an organically sounds like a great idea.
But Pat Riley didn't organically draft anybody other than Dwyane
Wade and then popped in Lebron James and Chris Bosh
and won two titles and went to four finals. Um
were they missed opportunities? Sure? Sure, but the first finals
(01:17:09):
was derailed by injury. Kyrie got hurt and Kevin Love
was already hurt. The second finals was the miraculous comeback.
The third finals they just got overwhelmed by a better
team that they weren't. It was a bad matt They
had bad matchups all over and not enough guys to
guard Kevin Durant and Lebron simply couldn't do it by himself.
Couldn't do it period. And then this year Kyrie walked
(01:17:32):
out the door. Otherwise you might have had another Titanic showdown.
And it was in an effort to keep to appease
all players, they let a player dictate that he wanted
to leave early. So it might sound like I'm going
soft on on the Cleveland Cavaliers, but last time around
they moved Heaven and Earth. Brought in Anton Jamison, brought
(01:17:53):
in Shaquille O'Neil, brought in Larry Hughes, brought in guy
after guy after guy, but had been to the finals,
been to the Eastern Conference Finals, were still close to team,
and he left. So I just look, sometimes you can
you're still in Cleveland. Sometimes the guy's ego outgrows a town,
(01:18:15):
outgrows an owner. I don't fault the Calves for many
of their moves, even trading the number one overall pick
that they had just drafted in order to get Kevin Love, Like,
you probably would have done that move again even if
it happened today, even knowing the way it turned out.
So Cleveland made some airs. I just wouldn't compare it
(01:18:35):
with the Green Bay Packers, by the way, the Packers
should have been in a second Super Bowl when they
choked in Seattle. Um, there's one. Aaron Rodgers been hurt.
That's not a fault of the team. And in football,
it's really really hard, and their defense hasn't been good enough.
Now they scrapped it. But even when they scrapped the
defense to rebuild it and give Aaron Rodgers better personnel
(01:18:56):
on the defensive and offensive side the football, he's not
comfortable because they got rid of Jordy Nelson's Like, what
do you which? Which way do you want it. Sports
are hard to be consecutively great, and it just is
that's the moment you're good, people start stealing your coaches
and start stealing your players, and the expectations are raised.
And that's why we need to continue to applaud what
(01:19:19):
the Spurs had done and what the Patriots have done.
Their consistency in an era in which it's the hardest
thing to achieve is maybe as or more impressive than
teams that have won as many or more titles. It's
an interesting discussion. You know, Colin does do the either
or sort of thing that you know, like Cleveland messed
(01:19:42):
it up, but there's there's a couple of moves they
could have done better. But it's like you're not ever
given a blank slate. You know, when they were given
Lebron James, the league was different. That's when I talked
about with James Harden. You know, when the Thunder moved
on traded James Harden, you needed two big guys because
you had to beat the Spurs and Lakers to get
to the finals. Both of them had big guys. Now
(01:20:03):
you don't so so Sergeonbak or Kendrick Perkins. Remember it
didn't matter. The Warriors just happened to be kind of
ahead of the curve in playing small ball, and Draymond
Green allow him to do so. Steph Curry, you know,
ten years ago, fifteen years ago, Steph Curry wouldn't be
as effecive as he as Dow But now he's as
(01:20:25):
effective as anybody's ever played the game. All Right, I
got a lot to get back to up coming next. Uh,
Michael Porter Jr. Is gonna join the show. We'll ask
him what Draft Knight was Like. I knew during the
draft he was gonna false some I didn't know where
he would land. Did he know? What's that feeling like
to go from being some people's number one high school
prospect in the country, having back surgery, coming back early,
(01:20:48):
playing a couple of games, and then falling in the
draft the Denver Nuggets, who by the way, traded away
Wilson Chandler moments ago, clearing out room a small small
forward for Michael Porter Jr. Uh. Michael Port Jr. Joined
us at the top of the hour on the Doug
Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up Doug Gottlive Show,
Fox Sports Radio. M m m m m m m
(01:21:12):
M m m m m m m m m m
m m m. We're gonna react to England's win in
the World Cup. I guess we'll have We'll have John
Ramos give us the blow by blow or maybe David Gascon.
We'll discuss that. Plus Boogie Cousins is a member of
the Warriors. Do we just people are freaking out? Like
shut down the NBA, it's over, like all right? They
(01:21:35):
were pushed to a seventh game last year. Boogie's coming
off a torn achilles tenant. If Boogie was at the
at the heights of his boogeiness, maybe, but we don't
know even when he's gonna be back. And he's got
to fit into a team concept, one that lives with
small ball. Small ball means Draymond Green is the five,
So how does he handle a different role? A lot
(01:21:57):
more questions than our answer. Don't get me wrong, it's
a good act was asition, especially at the price for
the back to back defending champions. Some other news teams
are clearing out cass base Wilson Chandler traded for some picks.
It saves the Denver Nuggets a bunch of money in
cap space. He's traded to the seventies sixers. It to
(01:22:18):
expiring contract and it saves Denver millions fifty million dollars
in fifty million dollars in combined salary and luxury tax. Wow,
that is a great financial trade from the Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets finished in last place, in last place in
the Northwest Division. Remember Northwest Division last year. At last place,
(01:22:39):
there's still ten games over five hundred and just one
game out of the playoffs, and they might have gotten
the steel of the draft in Michael Porter Jr. Who
by some people's some rankings was the number one high
school player in the country. UM he was said to
go to Washington. Lorenzo Romar gets fired. He goes back
to Missouri, where his dad had been a coach in
the women's side before he went to Washington. So he
(01:23:00):
goes to Miszoo, plays a couple of minutes in the
first game, has a back issue, has surgery, doesn't have
to come back, does come back for the SEC Tournament
and for the n c A tourmainal in places three games,
but still viewed as a top five, top ten prospect.
Let's welcome in Michael Porter Jr. He joined US on
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. What what
(01:23:20):
did you think going into Draft night was gonna happen? Um?
First of all was going on guys? Uh? Yeah, I was.
I was. I was feeling anxious. You know. Um, I
don't really know what was gonna happen. Uh. I didn't
know what city I was gonna land in. It. It
was a weird feeling. But you know, I got a
great agent who had you know, I reached out to
(01:23:41):
all the teams. He kind of got a good picture
of where I was gonna end up. I didn't know
it was gonna be Denver, but it was. It was
definitely stressful. But once my name got called and I
was the Denver nugget, it was, it was all joy.
Were you on social media? Because I had tweeted, I
had friends had told me they were drafting for teams. Hey, Porter,
Porter might fall a little bit here. Some guys don't
(01:24:02):
like the medicals, some guys don't don't like the need. Uh.
That was and I said as much. And you did
sit a lot longer than people thought. Were you on
social media? In reading um stuff like that? Now, I
wasn't on social media. I just tried to soak in
that moment. Um. My agent though, sitting right next to me,
(01:24:23):
I guess that that woes. ESPN died whatever his name is.
I guess she gets the news before anybody else. So
he was constantly refreshing his page, seeing what's going on,
you know. So it was crazy. Um so when you
found out Denver, what did you honestly think? Honestly, I mean,
my first thought was just like wow, like that's that's
(01:24:45):
the last team I really expected to go to. Uh,
you know what I mean, Like I had, but I
really had no idea what I was gonna end up.
But I had been out to Color Outo a couple
of times. In my first INSTIs like, wow, that seems
like the perfect place for me. I had watched some
games last year. Um, I saw the kind of the
style they play. They love to score the ball, you know,
and just immediately thought it was a great, great fit
(01:25:06):
for him. Yeah. Plus they got yr Kich, who, as
a big guy in their leading score, is also a
great passer, right, Like, So it's one thing, and I
know you like to pass as well, but when somebody's
when your best player is your best passer, it makes it.
It makes the game immediately more fun right now? He
Uh yo, kids, he reminds me of my brother John Tay,
just in the fact that he's an amazing pastor and
(01:25:27):
he makes the game so much easier for everybody else. Um,
so he'll be super fun to play with and I
think our games will mess perfectly. Um. Okay, John Tay
decided to go back to school. In hindsight, did you
wish he would have come out? Maybe maybe you could
have found a way to get him to Denver as well? Um,
and now tell he was actually really good things for teams.
He was gonna go really really high in the draft
(01:25:49):
probably if it was into the twenties, it was gonna
be somewhere in there. So I kind of I'm happy
for him. Uh, he needs to do with best for him,
So I'm happy with the decision he made. Yeah, it's
it's it's crazy how much he rose, now quickly he rose.
Michael Porter Jr. Joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, so as much and
as honestly as you can tell us, what what's what
(01:26:12):
is the situation when you're back in him? Um, I
mean it's it's progressing you know, we we keep meeting
it with doctors and stuff, getting different opinions on stuff. Um,
But the good news is like it's an issue that
I'll recover fully from. You know what I mean it
This is a timetable thing. Um. But they're taking the
(01:26:33):
time with me, not rushing anything. Uh, you know, going
through all the steps. But I mean I'll be I'll
be healthy who um, you know, one day. So I'm
just taking it one day at a time right now.
So He's like, you have they have they told you
when you can expect Like will you are you expected
to be at training camp play day one in the season?
Have they given you any any reasonable expectations? Not? Not really.
(01:26:56):
They just tell me, you know, Mike, like our primary
concern um even draft you was get you all the
way healthy because we know when you when that happens,
you're gonna be You're gonna be a great player. But
we don't want to skip steps. We don't want to
put you out there when you're not so um you know,
like I it all depends on what they think and
how well I progress. But knowing me, I'm gonna do
(01:27:17):
every everything possible to get back as soon as I can.
I'm ready to be on the forum and compete in play. So, UM,
I'm looking forward to that. I've got I got to
know your dad a little bit. Obviously you played a
huge part in your upbringing and how close to your
family is. But there and there was there was a
narrative there that you were a guy who thought too
(01:27:38):
highly of himself that it rubbed some people the wrong way.
Why do you think that became part of some some narrative.
I'm honestly not sure. You know, I am very confident,
but I never try to come up as it's cocky.
You know, if someone asked me a question, I'm not
gonna shy away and not be confident. But now I
never try to be cocky. Uh. I think it was
(01:27:58):
honestly just the fact that, Um, I didn't I didn't
play lest to get in Missouri really, so people really
didn't get a feel for for how I am on
the court. You know, how I react when something goes
my way when it doesn't. Um, people really didn't get
a feel for me. They might have just saw one
of two interviews and kind of developed a perception of me,
which is fine, you know, but I'm never try to
come over there a game, um, trying to be as
(01:28:19):
humble as possible. I mean, you, you did select a
couple of great players, and you, you know, you compare
yourself to Janice and to k D and guys like whoa, whoa, whoa.
And he said like, well, look I go, I drive
a little harder to the hoop than than k D.
And guys were guys were whole whoa whoa? Did you did?
Did did you? Did you feel that with that? It
was a reaction to those type of comments where you're
(01:28:40):
just trying to make a comp for how you play.
And I read it and I'm like, wow, I right,
here's here's your quote. I'm a mixing k D and Janice.
You know, I go to the whole little bit more
than k D. I like bumping into people a little
more physical than Katie. Like, look, that's one of the
best scores in the NBA. I understand what you're saying,
but you also understand how it kind of can can
can read in print right now. I was asked the
(01:29:02):
question in that situation, now, that's the question, you know,
who do who? Do other people compare the game too?
And then I answered, you know, I be compared to
Katie sometimes Jianna sometimes, and then they I do like
those comparisons, I said, yeah, of course those are you know,
those are two the best players in the end. Yeah,
I wouldn't say my game is exactly like this, And
then I continue to say, you know, I'd like to
(01:29:22):
go to the whole a little more than Katie. But no,
I mean, I have a lot of steps to to
get the way those guys are, right, and I'm not
trying to skip steps. But that's kind of how that went.
You know, the media kind of took that around with it,
which it's fine. I'm not really too worried about that,
but right, it's it's it's a great learning lesson, right
that that the things you say, they end up sometimes
reading and sounding different than the question that was asked
(01:29:45):
and how the response actually was and if you know, right, so,
it's one of those Okay, I understand on how kind
of perception. Yeah, perception can can change the reality of
people's view of me when that's not the reality of me. Actually,
gotta be careful with what you say. Yeah, so, so
after this interview, don't do anybody's else's interview. Michael Michael
(01:30:06):
Porter Junior joining us here on the dug Otlip Show. Dude,
So you're on your own right like you you when
you're in Como and your dad was there, then you
your whole family was at the Seattle and then you're
back in Como. Now you're on your own. What's it
like to have this kind of freedom of being a
yet like getting your own place, doing your own thing.
What's that? What's this been like for you? It's crazy.
(01:30:29):
It's definitely crazy, and I get I get bored at
times because I used to be with a family, uh,
in the house with seven other kids. You know, we're
all really close. But it's you know, it's a good
experience for me. My parents still come out here. Um,
and actually I'm gonna have a friend move in with
Lee and also possibly my sister, so you know, I'm
always gonna have people around here. I'll go back home
(01:30:50):
and visit. But it's crazy. It's definitely adjustment. Can you cook? Uh,
My intention is actually up here with me as well,
and he may show I get on my good food me.
So you literally have like no idea how to cook.
I cook some cook you know, peinout, but joy sandwich
here and there there you can listen. I've I've discovered
(01:31:10):
what to do in your free time while you're rehabbing.
Go to like a culinary school like not a culinary school,
like like Sir lahtb. They have cooking classes, right, and
then you end up. Or you can just hire a chef,
that's the other thing you could do. Or you could
just do what I'm doing and move right in next
to a Whole Foods and there you go. That's also
um and And normally I would say whole page. You know,
(01:31:30):
they call a whole paycheck, but in your case, it
really isn't It really isn't your whole whole paycheck? Well, listen,
can't wait to see you out on an NBA floor.
In the meantime, enjoy Whole Foods. Uh, don't overload on
kambuccha now, because that does have you know, kambucha's alcohol
in a little fermented alcohol. I don't know if you're big.
Are you a big kambucha guy? No, I've never even
heard of it. You haven't heard of kambucca yet. Some
(01:31:52):
people believe it's the elixir of the gods. Some people
believe it tastes like whale. You're in you. You be
the judge. They have all different avers of it. They'll
be people listen you you you you start up a combot, cambucha,
a conversation and whole foods, it'll be one you'll want
to get out of ten minutes in, but you'll learn
a lot that good. I'm gonna try about uh. Michael
(01:32:13):
Porter Jr. Thanks for joining us, man, and get healthy soon, Okay,
for sure, appreciate it. Thank you, Michael Porter Jr. Is
that about right? Ryan Music? As I'm I'm actually sipping
on some kambucha. I'm back on the kambucha train. Yeah,
I mean it's I've always been a fan. Um. I
know some people don't like the I don't know how
(01:32:34):
would you describe it, the vinegary taste, um, But it's
something I've always enjoyed personally. That's actually a solid movie.
If you had a lot of money to live right
next to the whole foods, that's pretty that's pretty good.
And they whole foods will cook up like you get fished,
like they'll cook up your fish for you. They'll do
whatever you want. I mean, I'll just cost money, right,
(01:32:56):
Ramos kombucha guy, that would be a negative I've never
tried it. You never try. I've seen Ryan with the
Is it a bottles that you have? Is it a bottle? Yeah,
I've seen it, but I've not tried it. Vinegar is
not my thing, but I would definitely take a tip
of it if you have another one, see what it
tastes like for me. But I wouldn't say. I'm high
thought to have originated northeastern China, traditionally consumed in UM
(01:33:20):
that region, also in Russia and eastern Europe. It's been
homebrewed globally, and some companies sell it commercially. Of course,
it's become very very popular. Um. It's used by a
It's made by a fermenting tea using symbolic culture of
bacteria and yeast. So yeah, it's a It's a functional beverage,
(01:33:41):
lightly effervescent, sweetened black and green tea. There you go, combucha, combucha.
It's been claimed that kembucha tea here's asthma, cataracts, diabetes, diarrhea, gout, herpies, insomnia,
and rheumatism. That good, but it hasn't been proven to
(01:34:01):
have cured any of those. It's been claimed. It's been
claimed all right, the Michael Port thing kid is a
talent boy. Talent will be interesting. There was no timeline given, though,
and even even m p J did not necessarily say
there was no I'm gonna be their first game of
the season. Imagine that you're in a different state by yourself,
(01:34:26):
first time, money in your pocket, You got to rehab,
but you've got nothing else to do all day. You
probably he's probably we should have asked him about Jurassic
and UH and some of the other movies. What do
the Warriors expect to get out to Marcus Cousins next season?
I'll ask Anthony Slater from the Athletics Bay Area site
next in the dug Outlip Show. Car shopping can be
confusing with terms like dealer price, list price, an invoice price.
(01:34:48):
True car shows what other people paid for the car
you want. You can recognize a good price when you're
ready to buy a new or used car. Visit True
Car and they enjoy more confident car buying experience. And
she grew up right Doug otleap Show, Fox Sports Radio.

interview does a great job for the Athletics Bay Area.
(01:35:33):
Uh site, Uh, make sure you tell them to download
the podcast all available. Anthony Slater covers the Warriors. The
website is called the Athletic I write for it. I'm
not as talented as writer as Anthony is, nor as
good a reporter. He does a great job, Anthony. Uh,
take me through the DeMarcus Cousins deal. Should we I
kind of champion? Kevin Durant to start the day. I
know it's not a ton of money, but it's enough
(01:35:55):
money to free up space there. It's the second time
he's done it, and he's the only superstar I can
think of in the NBA who's who's taken less. That's
freed up money for other guys that actually play. Should
we be Champion? Kevin Durant not as much as last
summer to be Last summers was purposeful. He gave back
about ten million. It was because he wanted Andre Agadna
(01:36:17):
and showing living ships back. He wanted them to use
the mid level on Nicky Young last year. This year,
I think it was more about flexibility for him taking
the one in one instead of the two long. I
think he wants to go back in the three Asian
market last year, but by doing that that men he
had to give five million back and in tax savings
that was given the Worriors about twenty something millions, So
it was kind of just a side effect of it,
(01:36:37):
I think in this situation and the want if De
Marcus Cousins called him like De Marcus Cousins did yesterday
and said he wanted to come, even if Durant took
his full ACTI, Warrior still would have also done the
mid level. But Durant pitching it back, you know, twenty
millions of tax savings definitely eased the thought of it.
Why does he want to get back in the free
agent market because I won't think you know, it's really
(01:36:59):
makes five players in the league and the Brons. Is
this a bunch in Cleveland? You want to There's just
why not have the option? The Warriors are always going
to offer him max money again next summer. He knows it.
Every team in the leage will offer max money that
can Uh so why not have the ability to potentially
go off forwere And you know what I think, Look,
he had one years the Las, two year years on
a young year in the back of the market. I've
(01:37:19):
never thought he actually thought about leaving next summer after
three years, but potentially how it goes, that's the first
time I could see him they even looking around. Doug
Gottlib show here on Fox Sports Radio, all right, what
about Cousins. You know, the thing is, I think people
see twenty five points a game all starting to like, oh,
fit him in. But there's a lot there. First, the
(01:37:41):
Warriors are at the best when they play small ball
and they switch everything. That's not who he is. Um,
he is coming off and a chill his tenants, so
he won't be ready maybe February. And then he's always
been the focal point in the offense and that's not
what he would be here. How does he actually fit
the Warriors? It depends on how willing and you know what,
the first one deciding on how he looks. Right, You
(01:38:02):
mentioned the Achilles and that shouldn't just be something like
you know, point that's glossed over. I mean, this is
a two hundred seventy pounder, you know, aging a bit.
You know he's now twenty seven, twenty eight. When you
start to get wear and tear and he's coming off
probably the worst is you think it's the worst injury
in basketball. You can have maybe an achilles, and you
know he's doing guard moves out there. He's not just
some plotting big man that stands down there. So that
is it's not just Hay's when he comes back, like
(01:38:23):
how does he look? But then also how he fits in.
It's gonna be interesting because you know, I think he
might really fit them as number one. I think he'll
be best in the second unit. You know, maybe went
to rants out that he's trying to pick and rolls
with Steph Curry to start the second and fourth quarters.
Situations like that. He's not gonna be features that much.
They don't want to dump it down a ton. I
think they will at times, especially in that second unit.
(01:38:44):
But he hit a hundred and four threes in forty
eight games last year and one he's got four total
threes from their six centers. This is something they haven't had,
which is a stretch five and people will kind of,
uh maybe scoff at the idea that the Warriors needed
more shooting, but they had really bad Spacey and with
Igua Dollar can't shoots Raymond green Sholder, it's been such
an issue, so he stopped hitting three. They had the
(01:39:05):
fewest and round of three from their entire bench in
the NBA last year. Like, yeah, I don't know if
he wants to be a spot up shooters, but I
think he can actually kind of help him as a
spot U shooters, So there's ways to fit him in.
But how comfortable is he scoring thirteen a game and
being basically a fourth offensive option at times? We'll see.
I mean, that's just kind of depended on his mindset.
I I told people all along that I thought this
(01:39:26):
was last year was a bridge year, you know, and
they almost got caught. They almost got caught with a
week bench. Iguadala obviously getting hurt made that made that
even more obvious. But you didn't have the older guys
were too old and the younger guys were too young.
What do they do to the rest of that bench?
It would be interesting. They obviously have no money left,
(01:39:48):
uh think to me, they need at least two million wings.
They're trying to be on looney back with should be
the twelfth guy in the roster, and I think they
want two veteran minimum wings. There's not none really great
out there. There was rumors a bunch of Mont Crawford.
He doesn't fit the he guard a bunch of positions. Um.
And I think they are not even to carry the
fifteenth guy. That's what I'm hearing, just to save and
tax money. So Tyrolle Wngs is the name I heard.
(01:40:11):
You know, he's a two way guy in the King's
playing a cow, can kind of do some stuff, can defend.
But uh, they made just current internal growth. I think
Jacob Evans that their first rounder they're very excited about
as a guy who can defend. I mean, you may
know more about him watching them mention SINETI at times. Um.
But you know they got a living to they got
a goodal and and the fact is bench scoring was
an issue and although they didn't think that was gonna
(01:40:31):
come from a big I think the fact that they
can now feature DeMarcus Cousins in that second unit, it's
kind of kind of change how they made. You know, guys,
they may want around him and that second, but he
can He's I don't think he's going to come off
the bench, but he can kind of play with the
bench and be their kind of feature. Guys. You mentioned
that three years in, Uh, it might you know, maybe
time for Kadi to try something else. Um, And then
(01:40:55):
you know, there was talk after the NBA Finals a
couple of the couple of the players said, like, you know,
some of the some the behind the stuff, seeing stuff
when it comes out is crazy. What exactly what was
going on with this team? Yeah, it wasn't as bad
to me. That was a drunk David West kind of exaggerating.
It was a tough year from uh, personal stuff with
the two of their guys, and then it just all
(01:41:16):
the isolation stuff in the playoffs that was kind of
eating at them. And uh, when step got hurt late
in the year. They finished the season seven and ten
and there was some there was an internal you know
pickering a little bit, but nothing that's wild that you know,
David West really did kind of exaggerate that. But at
the same time, Uh, this is always kind of at times,
especially lately, been somewhat of an opposite. I know they've
won two titles in two years, but that hasn't been
(01:41:37):
crisp the entire time. I'm not saying Kevin Durant is
going to leave. I'm just saying he once his options open,
and that's tell you guys a lot, you know, I
I understand that. It's it's really interesting though, because he's
very emotional and sometimes he's he's all in and sometimes
he's not, and maybe he's too open about it, whereas
you can't really tell with Clay right, Like Clay, he
(01:41:59):
doesn't say an anything. You don't get anything out of him.
There was the league story that maybe he'd take less,
but it's long been rumored that, you know, like his
dad's a color guy for the Lakers. He grew up
in southern California. Who wouldn't want to consider it if
you're going to leave there? Right, Clay, we can't tell
if he's happy he's unhappy, whereas Durant we can. And
yet Durant ends up benefiting so greatly from being there.
(01:42:19):
It's a it's a very interesting mix in that way. Yeah,
I mean you kind of mentioned the leading of that
question though, how some days it looks like he's here
somebody that looks like there that's just kind of Kevin Durant,
you know, and you know maybe that matters. How does
he wake up JI life first two tousant of nine
team We'll see. I mean that's so much down the line,
and to me, it's very dependent on how they perform
next year. But that's just different personalities and different locker rooms.
(01:42:41):
You've been in a son of locker rooms in your time.
Clay Thompson is super unique. Uh, and and him as
the third star. I know Michael Thompson is down in
l A. But I would be a lot more confident
that Clay wants to be around longer than Katie. And
I'm not trying to like make any type of news
that Kevin duransked with him elsewhere. It's just he's, uh,
he's made a mid career, moved before. I think he'd
probably be a bit more comfortable. But uh, that's that's
(01:43:03):
a year away from from being any NBA drama. Last
thing is is Draymond We both mentioned. I don't know
if it's the shoulder or confidence, probably a little bit
of both, but he couldn't shoot um and he and
as good a pastor as he is. If he can't shoot,
there's nothing really open, and there there's the discussion of
a Draymond doesn't want to take less. I don't know
(01:43:24):
if he could have gotten the MAX last time around,
but he sure thinks he's gonna get the MAX this
time around. How does that play out. It's gonna be
very interesting because he's not right now, he's not eligible
for you know, that designated player super max. But if
he went to take a Pier of the Year this
upcoming season next summer, he would be eligible for that extension,
and that would kind of put press on the Warriors
to maybe prove to Draymond dreen if Draymond really want
(01:43:46):
that max. So, you know, that made one of two things.
I think the good side of it for the Warriors.
Draymond ready go often, especially last year. Maybe he doesn't
pay that much attention in the regular season. He's probably
to be done for Defensive Player of the Year, so
I think he might have a monstrous defensive season. But
if he does get it, which you know, he's probably
be the favorite to get it if he if he
wants it. Um, that too created the situation next summer.
We're not only Durant hitting the free agency market. Clay
(01:44:09):
Thompson unless he gets an extension done, is is DeMarcus
Guising will be a free agent, although he's probably walking
if he has a decent season. And then you also
have to decide with Draymond. Might come to a situation
and a lot of it's dependent on Durant. Durrantly, then
you probably do want him max out Draymond. But if
Durant decides to stay long term, uh, it might be
a situations the tide betwe Clay and Draymond. Great stuff.

Anthony Slater from The Athletic covering the Warriors for their
Bay Area site, Anthony, really enjoy it. We'll talk with
you maybe after summer league. Find out what you think

(01:45:36):
They went in straight sets. NBA news today, Denver has
traded Wilson Chandler and draft consideration to the Philadelphia Seventies
six years. Rockets have signed Michael Carter Williams to a
one year deal and Adrian war Janowski. Earlier today, reports
Tyreek Evans is finalizing a deal with the Indiana Pacers

the Lakers are are are talking about pursuing John Wall

in a trade, Damian Lillard in a trade, uh and
other stars in a trade. Maybe maybe Demard de Rosen

Chicago Sun Times. Jimmy Butler, a league's source said, has
no intentions of signing extension in Minnesota, all but fed
up with the nonchalant attitude of younger teammates, especially Karl
Anthony Towns. A league's source close to the situation told
the Sun Times Kyrie Irving and the former Bulls All
(01:46:42):
star Jimmy Butler still trying to figure out a way
to play together. Whether that means the Celtics, or to
acquire and to acquire a trade and acquire Butler, or
to simply wait a year they both opt out their
player options and join forces. Either way, the two former
Team USA basketball teammates are looking for a destination to
build an elite at court, whether that's in Celtic Green
(01:47:02):
or elsewhere in the East. That's from Joe Cowley in
the Chicago Sun Times fascinating, But some of this is
is a lot is a lot like the Paul George thing,
where you may want to play with Jimmy Butler and
he may want out of Minnesota and think he wants
to be in New York or or Brooklyn or the
(01:47:24):
Clippers or the Lakers or whatever, but a year removed,
you know the look. If Kyrie wins a title with
the Boston Celtics, myke my guess is he'd like to
stay with the Boston Celtics, and so it would be,
you know, in coming upon Boston. But could they move anybody?
With their young players getting older but getting more skilled
as well. Be interesting to keep an eye on music.
(01:47:46):
Did you answer the question if you were going to
have an eating contest, what item it would be. I'm
gonna go with pizza, Doug, what kind of pizza? I
would probably just go cheese if it was a matter
of you have to eat as much of it as possible.
M Um, okay, cheese pizza, right, yeah? Um, well, um,
(01:48:11):
the cheese pizza, I think. Did you do you know
the all time record? No? I have no idea. I'm
gonna guess it's something like thirty six slices or something ridiculous. Well,
Joey Chestnut in two thousand eight slicest slices and ten minutes,
(01:48:32):
ten minutes. I totally I heard the I heard the
forties something slices, but I didn't even realize you said
ten minutes till the second time. That's disgusting the World's
fastest time to eat a twelve inch pizza forty one
point three one seconds, world's fastest time. It's a world record.
(01:48:53):
John Ramo says, no way, the whole twelve the whole
pizza itself in forty one seconds. I I don't even
see how that's possible. I don't know how that well
obviously was done, so it is possible, but it's just
unfathomable to me. Uh yeah, there's now a sixteen inch pizza.
Let's see here. This is from the Major League eating
(01:49:14):
Major League eating forty seven slices is the new record.
Forty seven slices and in in ten minutes, forty seven
slices and ten mints. That's crazy, all right? So Ramos,
if you're gonna eat something, what would it be? Well,
I thought, I love um, I love sausages. The little
(01:49:35):
link sausages, but those might be too small. But I
do like that, so I because would they be too small?
But it's eating contest, eat as many well I'm thinking
like hot that Well, okay, sausages, let's just stop there. Sauausages, pork, turkey,
I like the turkey. Yes, all right, the turkey sausage.
If you want to take a do you want to
(01:49:56):
take a guess on what the Major League eating? And
what the what? What the record is? Do you have
it in front of there? Actually is a record for sausages. Um,
let's see here, pork sliders, pork sandwiches, pulled pork, pork roll,
pork ribs. I'm sure there's been. They'll be sausages. I'm
gonna I'm gonna get to it. Salmon sausage sandwiches. Okay,
that's close enough. I would say sandy sausage sandwiches in
(01:50:20):
twelve minutes. How about let me double it twenty four
twenty four sausage sandwiches thirteen point two five. You're very close. Yeah,
I was gonna say twelve. I figured one minute. Reindeer sausage,
which is, like, you know, it's kind of reindeer sausage.
Twenty eight sausages in ten minutes. Okay, that's what I'm
(01:50:41):
thinking more of links and stuff gascon What would you
eat if you could, if you had to eat one
thing and record record time, I'd go with French fries.
French fries, what kind of what? You know? We're not
sponsored by any fast food so you only get one
fast food chain. What would they be? Oh? Man, um,
If I had a pick, I'd either be in an
a McDonald's. I mean either are well I I said
(01:51:03):
one and you said either or give me in and out?
Then okay, curly French fries had a had a championship
in two thousand and ten in ten minutes? How many
pounds of French fries did Bob Stout shout eat and
how much time? Ten minutes, ten minutes. I'm gonna go
(01:51:23):
with pounds. I'm gonna go with pounds. No, come on,
I don't know pounds in in ten minutest, man, it's
still pounds like they may be small, but it's pounds
seven point nine pounds. I want you to think about that.
(01:51:48):
Let's just think about that for a second. That is,
it's that's cheer craziness. What what some of these people
can can eat and I know there's like a skill
to it and a trick to it. Right, It's it's
almost like guys that can can shuffle a deck or
can count cards. How there's a there's a skill, there's
an art to that. But that is crazy, Like I
(01:52:08):
don't really know what the what the trick is to
that many pounds being able to eat that much, you know,
like the the Joey chest sense of the world where
they did what they what they dip the bun and
water so that flat. I just don't understand how you
keep all that down or how they don't have bigger guts.
I just I don't understand it. Um it is it
(01:52:29):
is like one of them. It's become I want to
know when it became such a big thing ago. What
would be your food? I mean, look, I can down
to pizza pretty good. I can get down some sushi
pretty good. But sushi I run out of steam with
too much too much rice. I would say watermelon. I
(01:52:51):
would say watermelon. Watermelon would be mine. So you have
to do that by weight, right, because they're not all
the same size. So how much do you think you
could do a couple pounds Uh, yeah, yeah I could.
I mean I could probably down an entire several pound watermelon,
and I I realized that wouldn't be enough. I realized
that wouldn't Uh do you guys? You know? Here's what
(01:53:12):
you're coming up next. I'll tell you what the all
time all time watermelon eating record is, and we'll see
if I could get even close. That's next in the
dug Ot Lip Show Fox Sports Radio. Online shopping can

before we were so so rudely interrupted by the bills
that we have to pay here in the dug Out
Lip Show. I'm kidding all of our our sponsors, we
love them. Thirteen point to two pounds of watermelon at
(01:53:56):
a Brookville community picnic, eating content by Buffalo Jim Reeves,
and it took place in over fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes,
three point two two pounds. Can you imagine how much
he had to pee? The rest of the day, Ramos,
that's a lot. Like I had watermelon on the way
(01:54:16):
home today. I was, I was out and about. I
grabbed some watermelon and I was, I was on my way.
It was like pre sliced and you know, look, I
can down some watermelon. But I ran in the door
and I had to go. So I can you imagine
thirteen point two two pounds. Let's get you all caught
up on everything else in sports. Let's get to the press,
the press. Doug got them show Fox Sports Radio David
(01:54:45):
gascon when he got We'll start things off from the
NBA news is coming down the wire right now the athletics.
Jared Wias is reporting the Washington Wizards have made a
couple of moves today and one of them includes Dwight Howard.
They've agreed on a one year contract with Howard. The
move will become official after he clears waivers on July
the six. Dwight Howard. Yes, so they had Martine Gore Todd,
(01:55:09):
but Gort Tott was making a bunch of money, right,
so now they're getting good Dwight Howard on a mi
minium deal. Yes, all right, I don't mind that, except
for Dwight Howard has the opposite of the mightas touch
right right, I literally, Dwight Howard has ruined five franchises.
Let's see you go for number six average about sixteen
and a half points and twelve and a half rebounds
(01:55:30):
last season with the Hornets soft in the league. So
we see it happens with how much? How many? How many?
Without looking Martine gor Todt, what do you think he averaged?
I'm gonna say thirteen points and nine rebounds. Marcine Gore
Todd averaged eight point four points, eight point four points,
(01:55:51):
seven point six rebounds. Alright, we look classic old centers
that go the way the Dodo. Neither can hit it three.
All right, We'll stick with the NBA and never Nuggets
have traded away Wilson, Chandlon also a draft consideration to
the seventies sixers that was reported by Adrian ward Znowski.
It's gonna believe, it's believed that it will be a
second round pick. Second round picks are are super valuable
(01:56:13):
because they don't hurt you against the salary cap. That's
a because people always wanted like why did they trade
for first round pick? They got a bunch of seconds seconds.
People sell second round picks for three to five million
dollars depending on where they are, but they don't count
against you against the cap because you can sign non
guaranteed deals. It is switching on over the feoful World Cup.
(01:56:33):
Never what it's not feoful World Cup action. Today I
saw a couple of barn burners sweet in advance of
the quarterfinals. They beat Switzerland till today one nothing and
they're they're gonna face off against England. England needed peak
case to get done, but they dispatched Columbia for three penalties.
So over the last four games, three have ended on
(01:56:53):
peaks correct. Correct, So tell me, so what happened with
England and give me the music you want to do
the or Ramos you want to do it. Explain I
was all I was doing is hosting a nationally. Apparently
you guys were so busy that you were paying attention
to the game and going crazy there in the book,
that's what happened, Ramos, I deferred to music. Wow, you
(01:57:21):
both acknowledged. So yeah, look it was England had a
one oh lead and then Columbia ended up tying in
extra time. They had like five minutes of stoppage time.
They ended up going in the ninety three minute uh
no scoring and overtime, so it went to pek's England
they both I think it was tied to two. England
missed their third p K, then Columbia missed back to
(01:57:41):
back pek's, and then England had finished out the rest,
so they ended up winning four two. I get sweaty.
You gotta be ready to go, that's right, you gotta
be ready to go. Yeah. So what happened was in
the third round England got stopped on the shot. It
was a save and then Columbia came right back and
they hit the crossbar. And then after that England converted
onto their pek's and wanted, what do we think of
(01:58:01):
the guys that do the timing thing where they like
go one pace and out let the kick the ball,
like that's that feels weak to me? No, Well, actually
it worked out because Harry Kane did it earlier. He
actually scored on the PK that gave England a one
nothing lead, and he lined it up so he came
from about five feet back and just drilled it right
through the center of the net. And then the second
time he came up was during the p K session
(01:58:22):
and he took like two steps and then buried it
in the left hand corner. So obviously mixed up his
strategy against the goalkeeper this time around. I told you,
don't give up. Where would you kick it you go?
Would you go straight at him? Would you do the
like the vlag Garo safest place to throw it? Right
down the middle? I would, yes, left handed? I have
no accuracy at all. He left handed? I know you're
(01:58:43):
wrong handed. Yeah, got a joke? What else he got?
We'll kick things off of the National Football League and
we'll actually we'll go from the NFL with a couple
of suspensions. So San Francisco forty nights. Reuben Foster. He's
been fine and also suspended without pay for the first
two games of this coming year for the NFL's conduct
and substance abuse policies. He's not alone, though. Packers running
(01:59:05):
back Aaron Jones was also pot today for two games,
and Rams offensive lineman Jamon Brown's has spend it for
the first two games the regular season after violing the
NFL's substance abuse policy. Sorry Ramos, Well, no, there was
a there was a bigger one. Than I felt like
you buried the Uh Aaron wasn't Aaron Jones? Yes, He's
like he had a really good kind of breakout season
(01:59:26):
and he yeah, he did. I'm thinking about the same guy,
aren't I Yeah, But I mean I'm looking at the
offensive line for the Rams. I mean, he's a starting
offensive lineman. So Rams go as the offensive line goes,
especially with Grillian golf Man. Wasn't it his was? He
was driving while smoking weed? Right? So I mean, like, listen,
(01:59:49):
I'm I'm sitting here, We're watching the decriminalization of marijuana
around the country, and you're like, wow, that's but here's
a guy that in his first season four forty eight
yards average five point five yards to carry. Uh, this
is like an i Q test. You're not smart enough
to know don't smoke weed while you're driving. You're not
very smart. That last one ago from the NFL to
(02:00:09):
the college ranks. Lincoln Riley, head coach the Oklahoma Sooners,
was on the radio today with Serious XM and speaking
about the loss to Georgia from last season in the
Rose BOWLTI six. He said Georgia's defense wouldn't be nearly
as effective if the Bulldogs actually played in the Big Twelve.
And here's this quote, and he said, if you throw
George in the Big Twelve every year, there's no way
(02:00:30):
there are a top five defense in the country. End quote.
And then he circled back a little bit on Twitter
and said, that's not a shot at Georgia. They were
absolutely one of the best defenses last year. It's a
compliment to our league. Yeah, I I I took it
as such as well, Look, people want to deny the
Big Twelve, and if you can win, if the Big
Top can win a championship, it's a different discussion whether
(02:00:51):
or not your defense is ranked in the top ten
or in the top twenty. Because you're facing Oklahoma State,
in Texas Tech uh and in Oklahoma um, and you know,
up until last year when it blew up Baylor. UM,
I think Texas with Tom Herman is gonna have a
good offense this year. So I I think it's a
fascinating discussions. Get out there and pressed. That was the
(02:01:13):
press alright, back tomorrow. I got to uh, Tomorrow's Wednesday, right,
So Dan double dip again Dan Patrick and this show,
Nick right will argue with me. I feel bad for
Nick because so many of his really good arguments about
Lebron being the goat are based upon Lebron getting to
the finals in the East and Lebron's not getting to
the finals in the West. This The Doug Otlie Show,
