Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kutbooms.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
If you thought four hours a day, twelve hundred minutes
a week was enough, think again. He's the last remnants
of the old republic, a sol fashion of fairness. He
treats crackheads in the ghetto gutter the same as the
rich pill poppers in the penthouse. Wow to Clearinghouse of
hot takes, break free for something special. The Fifth Hour

(00:23):
with Ben Maller starts right now.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
In the air everywhere. The Fifth Hour with Me, Ben
Maller and Danny g Radioe. Happy Saturday. It's early and
it is the first day of March.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Here we are. We've made it to the third month
of the year.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
In twenty twenty five, we celebrate National Peanut Butter Lovers
Day today, big day, unless it's not I know only
he's for gayzy holidays, but National Peanut Butter Lover's Day.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Fun fact.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Fun fact to begin the Fifth Hour podcast. The modern
American delicacy of peanut butter goes back to around the
eighteen forties, so we're about one hundred and eighty something
years in the past and the hot Top time machine
and no one knows exactly sure like where it began.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
There's a theory.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
That a person in New York began making peanut butter
after her son saw a Cuban woman grind up peanuts
and smear the paste on bread. So, but in America,
that's the belief to be somewhere in the eighteen forties
the beginning of peanut butter. But it wasn't until eighteen
eighty four that peanut butter got patented. Because you know,

(01:44):
you're not really anything until you get patented. So that
was in the eighteen eighty four and then in nineteen
oh four, twenty years later, we had the first major
brand to market and sell to the masses peanut butter.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
That's beach nut in nineteen.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Oh four, so one hundred and twenty one years ago
it began being marketed here in America.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
So celebrated appropriately National Peanut Butter Lover's Day.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Our podcast today, I know we try to avoid sporty,
but that being said, rare and appropriate, rare and appropriate.
We have standing pat We've got that, the w run
the real handicap, and we'll see what else we have
time for. So we'll get to all of those things,
and who knows what else, But we begin with this

(02:38):
and the news out on Friday, and here we are
on Saturday. So I didn't do the overnight show last night.
I'm not contractually obligated to do it Friday into Saturday.
But the news came out that the decision is in.
We were hoping it would wait till Sunday. But Matthew
Stafford is he leaving the Rams? Is go play for

(03:00):
the Raiders or the Giants? No, Matthew Stafford agreed yesterday
to a restructured contract with the Rams, so he will
be staying his the rest of his career, most likely
in a Ram uniform, will be staying put. He remains

(03:21):
in LA despite being attacked by Tom Brady. I don't
have attack the right word being courted publicly courted by
Tom Brady. Stafford's agent was given permission to talk to
other teams, and according to everyone, Stafford was whined and
nine by the Raiders and the Giants, and they talked

(03:42):
about contract parameters, and in the end Stafford decides to
stay with the Rams. So I've seen a couple of
different reports on how the contract will be put out,
and it doesn't really matter to me. I'm not paying
the contract. So Stafford's staying now. I did get several
emails from you knuckleheads saying that I must be upset

(04:04):
because I was doing multiple Mallard monologues about Matthew Stafford
leaving the Rams and so the fact that he didn't
leave the Rams, therefore I must be upset.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
So let me address that right.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Now, all right, the question, am I bothered by Matthew
Stafford staying with the Rams? So my word for this
is ambivalent, all right, So I have mixed feelings. The
talk show host part of me, the talk show host
part of me, is confused, is troubled because it would

(04:38):
have been good for talk radio had Matthew Stafford gone
to the Raiders or the Giants. Really, the Giants would
have been better for talk radio purposes. So from that
part of it, for my professional career, you know, I
yap in front of microphones every night for four hours
a night. That would have been a really cool thing
for talk radio. He's got Stafford going to a new team.

(05:02):
Can he make it in a town like New York?
And if you can make it there, you can make
it anywhere. So Natra told me that years ago when
he was singing that medley back in the day. But
there's such an infestation of suck with the Giants and
the Raiders that in the end the Rams. The fan
part of me is happy. Do I think Matthew Staffords
a top run quarterback?

Speaker 1 (05:23):
No, I don't.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
I had him, and I'm not going to change my
position because he's back with the Rams. We had said
this in previous editions of The Overnight Show, the Original
Recipe Podcast, that Stafford's a Tier two, low Tier two,
high tier three quarterback at this point in his career. However,
if the Rams defense continues to swarm around the field,

(05:47):
then you can win with Stafford and Pukaakua and a
gaggle of other random, random players. And it's a testimonial.
The fact that Stafford turned down more money we are
told to stay with the Rams is an endorsement of
Sean McVay. It is also an endorsement of how incompetent

(06:10):
the Vegas and New York teams are. And I didn't
want to adjust that because Tom Brady, using malormth it
has been a slippery slope for Tom Brady is zero
for two if my math is correct. Now we know
that he wanted Ben Johnson, give me my Johnson, Ben
Johnson and Tom Brady had let it be known he

(06:32):
believed that Ben Johnson would leave the Lions and go
to Vegas because of Tom Brady. The Raiders got rid
of Antonio Peter, something that I am told Mark Davis
did not really want to do, but he followed the
advice of Tom Brady, and Tom Brady's like, listen this,
Ben Johnson is gonna be good.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
We got a shot to get him. This is what
I'm hearing.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
And Brady got left by the side of the road.
Ben Johnson said, screw you. I'm gonna go coach the
team in Chicago, And so Brady was left without a
coach and they had to hire Pete Carroll. Now, do
I believe Pete Carroll's going to do a good job?

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yet?

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Do I also know Pete Carroll's the oldest coach in
the NFL? Yeah, I do know that, And I know
that your coaching mortality there is a limit.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
There is a limit to that.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
And so now the story came out the other day,
which led to an NFL Donning Brooke a verbal Donnybrook
at a Starbucks in Indianapolis, one of the great stories
of the week. A couple of NFL in signers got
into it because the rap sheet, in my opinion, was
doing the bidding of Tom Brady, and Jordan Schultz, the

(07:40):
insider who's doing some work with Fox right now, he
had the accurate report. And then Team Brady circled the wagons,
and I believe they deputized the rap sheet former Patriot
Beat writer to give their version of the story, which
likely was not was not the accurate verse of the story,

(08:01):
but they repeated it, and then that led to the
incident at the Starbucks. So Tom Brady think about he
thought he was getting Ben Jonson, as we said, didn't
get him. So then Brady whinds and dines Matthew Stafford,
and Stafford says, go Pound, Sad, I'm staying with the rams,
Go Pound saying I'm out of here. You talk about

(08:22):
being star crossed if you're Tom Brady, but you can't
say that part. It has not been a very encouraging beginning.
It's not very reassuring that Tom Brady's going to turn
that thing around in Vegas. And at this point, based
on so far in the offseason, you'd have to say
Tom Brady's more like Michael Jordan as an executive than

(08:43):
he is Jerry West. When it comes to decision making
early on, it is not not gone. Well, the down
trodden will be gone. Raiders continue. So again, listen, now
we have quarterback Roulette, but the Rams are out of it.
They have their guy, Matthew Stafford. So now we play

(09:05):
the pin the tail on the donkey at quarterback. The
hot rumor as of yesterday early on Saturate. They haven't
seen if anything's changed yet since I got up. But
the rumor yesterday when I went to bed was Aaron
Rodgers to the Giants.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
That was all hot and heavy, and would.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Rogers stay in New York and would he go across
the way there and stay in the same stadium and
all that stuff, And so I don't know that there'll
be much of a public courtship for Rogers. I would
doubt that it would have been fun. Again from a
talk radio standpoint, to see Aaron Rodgers with Sean mcvahn.

(09:44):
We're not going to get that. We'll get Matthew Stafford,
and that's fine. I'm okay with it. It's not great talk radio,
but we'll see where Rogers ends up. Also, the Raiders,
the Raiders have to find someone that they can say hey, Chicka,
wow wow and bring in their quarterback. And I'm looking
around here. There's a lot of stank. There is a

(10:08):
lot of stank. The names that are being out. I
tossed around Russell Wilson, which I don't buy. There is
a history there, It's not a good history. There was
a tough divorce between Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
So I don't I don't see that one happening.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Sam Donald, Oh my god, Sam Donald. We have seen
Sam Donald on bad teams. It does not go well.
Donald on good teams goes well for a while and
then falls apart. Justin Fields also an option. He's failed
with two franchises already, two bad well, one bad franchise,
one good franchise.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
But he's zero for two. So we will we will
see how this goes.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
We will see what happens for the Raiders, and we
will have in depth team coverage as the matchmaking game continues.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
I call it speed dating, if you will.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
As everyone's trying to get a chair here at the
quarterback position, and if they don't get a share, well
you know you're screwed. I didn't want to mention. Also
the Benny Awards. We had the red carpet show yesterday.
Hooray for Holly, would hooray for Hollywood? Keep voting. If
you haven't voted yet, vote early. I would say, vote often,
but you only get one vote per account. But the

(11:18):
twenty twenty five Beny Awards or tomorrow night, the ballot
is on a Google form. Now you can get that
ballot on x It's pinned to the very top of
my page, and then also on Facebook.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
It's pretty high up on the Facebook page too.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
So if you want to vote and you haven't done
that yet, we'd love to have you. We'd love to
have you be one of our voting members of the
Malad militia and decide who's going who's going to end
up winning the highest honors in overnight sports radio. And
the ballot I was looking at it last night. We
did the show yesterday morning, the Benny's Red Carpet Show,

(11:59):
and looking at the back and forth, it is so
close and I may or may not have access to
the voting. The Benny for Caller of the Year, the
Genium Medford Caller of the Year is insane. It is
absolutely next level that particular category in particular and International.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Caller of the Year very close. So that means in
my head that.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
The people, the committee, the people that put the ballot
together did a good job. That if it's that neck
and neck, if the electorate is split that much, that's
a solid that's a good thing. You want that. You
want this to be neck and neck. There's no clear
cut dominator. And even the social media influence of the year.

(12:47):
The final round ballot, which is on X that also
insanely close as of last night. I have not checked
early today to see where it is as I woke up,
but it is awesome. It is awesome to see so close,
so close. And so again you have today to vote

(13:10):
and then tomorrow as well, up until the award show,
and then after that, obviously we shut the voting off.
We start giving out Beny Awards. Everyone that wins gets
two golden tickets. So good luck and may the power
of the mal or.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Militia be with you.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
We hope, we hope you can get her done, get
her done. Anyway, moving on from that, we did something
we don't normally do this week on the Ben Malors Show.
It created quite the hullabaloo on the program. We go
back to about a week ago, the Monday Show, and

(13:52):
after several months of saying it's going to happen, it's
going to happen, It's going to happen, it finally happened.
For the first time ever, we played Are You Smarter?
Are You Smarter than the FSR Tech Queen? Now, some
thoughts on this, Okay, I thought the game was pretty good.

(14:16):
Some of the feedback I've gotten some of you loved it,
others of you hated it. Marcel ended up beating Lorraine up.
A number of people complained the questions were too easy?
What and my response to that, my rebuttal is that's
how the game is played.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
The questions are supposed to be easy. That's the whole
point of the game.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
And I got a stack of probably two hundred questions
that we're going to work our way through and some
will be easy like we did last week, and others
not so much. Right, So it'll get harder at times.
It's not always going to be as ridiculously easy as

(14:56):
it was this week. And even with that, it was
neck and neck between I mean, Marcel and lay Uh,
and in the end, Marcel pulled it out, and I'm
convinced now that is the greatest accomplishment that has ever happened.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
Marcel.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
He was strutting around there doing the electric boogoloo. He
was so happy. You talk about making someone's life winning
a cheesy radio game show. We were talking off the
air like this unbelievable. Marcel likely called every one of
his relatives and said, I won.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Are you smarter than an FSR Techqueen? They all probably
said what is that?

Speaker 3 (15:34):
And well, it's a game, and he tried to explain it,
and then for I said, Marcel LINGO, good luck on that.
We will play it again. We're not gonna play it
this weekend. We have the Benny's. Everything is scrapped for
the Bennys. All of the regular bits are scrapped for
the Bennys. We may do the instant advice line. We
may do that depending on the timing and how many

(15:54):
awards we have to get through. That's in limbo. We're
leaning to just doing it. We're leaning towards doing the
instant of ice line. But outside of that, everything else
is fully dedicated to giving out the Benny Awards, so
we won't have are you Smarter than PHISI tech queen
till next weekend or next week, and then we'll get

(16:17):
back to it.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Now, the real handicap. I wanted to mention this. Why not?
So this past.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Week we went out, me and the wife. We went
out with some of our coworkers to Top Golf. Now
I had never been to Top Golf. I'd been around
Top Golf. I'd seen the one in Vegas. I'd seen
in some other cities I've traveled to. I've seen Top Golf.
It's a very popular thing. If you've never been. You
go out there. It's a driving range, but you drink

(16:44):
and eat and have a merry time. And they have
a bar tracking thing which follows you, not you, follows
the ball that you hit around.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
And this is my first time playing. I had not
played golf in a long time.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
I'd mentioned in the previous episode of this podcast that
I had.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Some golf clubs.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
Unfortunately, the golf clubs I had were in my moving
my many movements around the southern California have moved several
times over the years, and one of the last moves,
the wife's like, we got to get rid of the
golf clubs.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
We have nowhere to put the golf clubs. You don't golf, let's.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Get rid of them. We'll get rid of them. We'll
get rid of them. So I was like, all right,
I'll get rid of them. So we got rid of them,
and I didn't really golf. I haven't golfed in many,
many years. And then all of a sudden, I was like, wait,
wait a minute, I need golf clubs. I got to
the golf bug and I wanted to go to the
driving range. I was like, I don't have my drivers.

(17:42):
I got to play golf. So I was like, I'll
go buy golf clubs. And we went to a PGA store,
which was a mistake because it was PGA Brandon Golf
Store and the drivers were like five six seven, eight
hundred dollars for just a driver, and I'm like, wait
a minute, do those things drive themselves? Do those golf

(18:05):
clips drive themselves? That's insane. So that didn't work out.
So we just showed up the top golf. It was
last weekend and I had a great time.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
It was fun. We drank a little bit ate.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Some appetizers, and everyone was in a good mood there
playing golf. It was fine. However, I do have a
bone to pick. I guess you call it pet peeve.
So my pet peeve is that by hitting the ball further,
you actually do worse, and it bothers me. It bothers me,

(18:39):
and it may explain. So as we are playing the
top golf and you're just driving, and they have if
you've never been there again, they have out on the
range there, they have different holes if you will to
hit the ball into and you get credited with points. Okay, fine,

(19:03):
But I noticed as we were playing top Golf and
I was getting into it, and I was in it
to win it.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
What's the point of showing up if you don't want
to win it.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
So we're doing this and and I'm like, I'm crushing
and I don't want I don't need to brag or
anything like that. But I was hitting the ball very,
very far, and it didn't matter because the further you
get away from the front of the driving range. At
Top Golf, we were on the second level, the further

(19:32):
you get away, the less likely you are to score
any points. So what I was noticing is that some
of the worst fricking golfers in the world that could
barely get the ball out of the driving range were
killing it. They were dominating at top golf. They had
the highest scores. And the reason they had the highest
scores is because by not hitting the ball as hard

(19:55):
you end up getting more points. Now, it is true
that further out on top golf you there are some
big money holes, if you will, like the blue and
the white. I believe it is way out there. But
the accuracy part of it is a problem. So I
ended up getting smoked in this thing. And then at
the end they have, oh the longest drive, and my

(20:19):
name was there. I had the longest drive, but that
didn't matter. So next time I go, and I don't
know if we're going to go anytime soon, but next
time I go to top golf, I am going to
try to suck at a time you cannot suck, because
by sucking, I will have a much better chance of winning.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
Do you understand you feel my agony? You don't care.
I just wanted to rant. I just wanted to rant.
I just wanted to complain, and I did. I've complained.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
I've ranted the the whole shebang, the whole dealio, if
you will here a couple of other things I wanted
to mention before we say goodbye and put the baby
to bed.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
Here on the fifth hour.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
On this Saturday Saturday, Saturday Saturday story that caught my attention.
And I don't know if you saw this one or not.
I'm not sure what you got, what you got.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
Going on in your world.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
Even on my nights off, I futz around and see
what's going on in the world and all that stuff, and.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
One thing in particular caught my attention.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
This would have been a malady monologue had I had
a live radio show last night and there was a
comment made by the Heisman Trophy winner who is trying
to end up as the top pick in the draft.
We're talking about Travis Hunter from Colorado, who would like
to be a two way player. I fully support Travis

(21:54):
Hunter being a two way player. Well, Travis Hunter said
this week that by playing both ways in football, it's
harder than baseball. That he said, it's more difficult being
a two way role player than the Dodgers show.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Hey Otani for example.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Okay, time out, All right, So let's break this down scientifically, right.
I would argue that from a physical standpoint, Travis Hunter
is right, But from an absolute skill standpoint, what Otani
does is much more difficult, and then explain why. All right,
First of all, Travis Hunter, when he's playing, if he

(22:38):
plays one hundred plays a game, that's a ton of
plays to play in an NFL game.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
He won't like me play that many.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
But at any given Moll made he's playing defensive back,
they're gonna run the ball some of the time, they're
gonna throw it to the other side of the field.
They're not gonna throw at him every single time. Just
like when he's on offense as a slot receiver, whatever
team he plays for, they're gonna run the ball some
of the time, they're gonna they're gonna throw to other people.
He's not, he's not the main focus on offense. Most

(23:05):
wide receivers, if you're a good wide receiver, you get
eight to twelve targets a game. So Hunter on offense,
he'll be blocking the rest of the time, but he's
gonna end up getting anywhere from eight to twelve targets
if he is the center of the universe, the center
of the universe on a team. And then and again defensively,

(23:28):
it's the same concept. And he said, well, Tani, he's
a designated hitter, or he's gonna play the field, but
he's not gonna you know, they're not gonna hit the
ball to him that much, which is true on any
given at bat. When Otani does play the field, someone
could hit the ball to Otani unless he's a designated hitter,
and then obviously forget about it, right, that doesn't matter.

(23:51):
The difference, though, is when Otani's on the mound, he is.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
Everything.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
While he's on the mount, right the starting pitcher, you're
the whole thing. You're the quarterback. Every single pitch is
on you, and then when you're at bat on offense,
it's all about you.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Now, you only do that four times a game, And Travis.

Speaker 3 (24:13):
Hunter's argument's gonna be, well, I get the ball seven
or eight times a game, so that's more than those
four times. But when you're playing baseball, the skill level
they hit a pitch that's zigging and zagging and all
that is insane.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
It's a different level skill.

Speaker 3 (24:29):
To be a good, not just good, an MVP level
baseball player is insanely difficult. And while it is a
different skill set and it is different and difficult, I
should say to play at a high level defensive back
and wide receiver.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
It's much harder to be a successful.

Speaker 3 (24:50):
Next level offensive player in Major League Baseball and also
be a successful pitcher. So, after a minutes long Mallard deliberation,
side with show hey Otani in terms of the skill
standpoint over Travis Hunter, and I am pulling for Travis Hunter.
I do not have an anti Travis Hunter position. I

(25:12):
would like to see him do well. I think it's
fun that he's gonna play both ways. And I'm all
about the fun. My middle name is fun.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
People don't know that.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
Yeah, my middle name is fun. I'm all about the fun.
I did get an email. We have the email tomorrow.
I just was going through my email before I turned
on the microphone here in Studio B, a podcast studio
Studio B. And I'm not going to use this for
the mail bag tomorrow. But somebody's like, hey Ben, what
are your takeaways from the combine the on field of workouts?

(25:43):
And I thought two things. I thought, A, this person's
not a regular listen to the show. And B this
person's delusional if they think I'm going to waste time
breaking down the underwear Olympics. Now, I like talking about
the rumor that come out of the scouting combine. Do
I want to sit there and break down the forty

(26:04):
yard dash or the vertical jump or the board jump
of some school from suck you?

Speaker 1 (26:13):
No, I don't. I don't. I'm not into that. That's
not my thing.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
If you are, great, I'm pretty sure every single player
drafted in late April will have high level athleticism, will
be able to It's kind of like the.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
The super I call it the Superman Open.

Speaker 3 (26:34):
And when you look at the NFL Draft and the
players that are picked in the first, oh, I don't know,
three or four rounds, maybe you can say the entire thing, right,
the entire thing. It's like the opening of Superman. It's
faster than a speeding bullet check. That's the forty yard dash,
more powerful than a locomotive. That's how many things you

(26:56):
can bench press and then able to leap tall buildings
in a single bound. That is what the NFL Draft
is all about. So I don't need to sit there
and watch some defensive tackle from Kentucky run in his underwear.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
That's just not my thing.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
If you're into it, fine, but I am much like
