Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. What is going on, everybody? How are we doing?
It's your boy, John Middlecoff little three and out podcasting.
Today we're actually gonna talk some college football. My guy Jackson,
(00:25):
who who you heard last year cough on campus, who
now started his intern. Jackson now is producer Jackson behind
the scenes with the crew of guys we have. He uh,
he will join me today. I told him to put
together some questions, some thoughts as we head in to
so far the biggest weekend yet in college football. We
got some massive games. We had a firing in Mike Gundy,
(00:48):
Dabo Sweeney, John Mattiers injured. We just got a lot
going on in college obviously, some big some just massive
massive matchups in conference. You know Bamba Georgia, LSU, oll
miss you got Penn State, Oregon, you got TCU, ASU,
you got Washington, Ohio State. So we got some really
really good games. We're gonna do a lot of college
(01:09):
football for about forty five minutes hour maybe maybe it's
closer to an hour than forty five minutes. And then
I want to do a little mail bag as well.
So at John Middlecoff. At John Middlecoff is the Instagram
fire in those dms and get your questions answered here
on the show. Obviously, you know if you listen on
Collins feed, make sure you subscribe to the Three and
(01:31):
Out podcast. You can find us wherever you may listen
to podcasts and as well as the YouTube channel. Just
type in my name subscribe. You will never miss a
thing and we will have you covered on all the
football content. We will not have a live reaction on
YouTube Thursday night or podcast about anything regarding the Thursday
(01:55):
night game because I will be at the Ryder Cup
in New York City doing some business stuff. So Friday
will be Stucky, who I actually recorded with today, So
we kind of went over these games the lines. Definitely
the NFL games. We got our first international game with
the Steelers and the Vikings, so we will discuss that
(02:16):
on Friday. But before I dive in any football, I
gotta tell you about my friends, my partners in the
official ticketing app of this podcast, Game Time best in
the business. If I could go to one game this weekend,
it might be Dublin just because I've never been there
and seeing an NFL game, but it would probably be
a college game and I've never been to Georgia. Actually,
I don't think I've ever been to the state of Georgia.
(02:37):
So Georgia Bama'd be hard to beat. Oxford, Mississippi probably
a pretty incredible environment. Penn State, Me and a buddy
from the Eagles back in the day when Billy O'Brien
was the coach, went to a spring practice, but I
didn't get the opportunity to go to a game. State
college is cool. I would say, Penn State at night
against Oregon, it would be tough to beat. I guess
(02:58):
I could go to TCU. Actually won't be in town.
TCU at Arizona State. But if you want to go
to any of these games NFL College Baseball playoffs are here.
Any event, concerts the sphere. You want to go see
a movie at the sphere, you want to go to
a concert at the sphere? Got you covered, So take
the guess. We're got of buying tickets with game time
down the game Time app created an account and USIC
go John JW Jen for twenty dollars off first purchase
(03:20):
terms of play again, create an account redeemed to go
John for twenty dollars off down the game Time app
today last minute tickets lowse prices, guarantee. We haven't done
this for a while because my man's been just grinding
behind the scenes, just cutting up videos part of our
squad here at three and out and doing his own
I see him firing takes left and right. Jackson. You
(03:43):
went to the Notre Dame A and M game. What
was at a couple weeks ago now probably a shitty
walk outside that building. Touchdown. Jesus came through for them,
not for you guys. But how you doing, bro good Man? No,
that game was tough.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I knew right when that botch hold happened that that
was gonna be a Notre Dame thing, and that Marcel
Reid and A and M we're gonna drive down and
win that football game, a one point game, obviously.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
You know you go into those games and we.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Saw some last week, a bunch of defensive performances in
college football, and you want to see a bunch of
points go back and forth.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
But I don't know, man, one of those games for
Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Obviously, I'm a Notre Dame fan that you don't want
to be in the situation they are right now where
you've got to win out and you got to hope
that the big ten gets weird, the SEC gets weird,
and you kind of sneak your way in and look,
I mean, Miami's a really good team. We'll obviously get
into who he think is the best team in the
country right now, and A and M looks like a
top ten team in the country.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
But I don't know. It was an unpuzzling it was.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
It was an unsettling feeling to have Notre Dame lose
that game in that way.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
I want to do something, you know, I told you,
let's do like five burning questions, five main topics, five
you know, big things. I do want to touch on it.
I touched on this on the podcast yesterday. What year
were you born? Nineteen ninety nine, the summer ninth, So
I was thinking about this. Mike Gundy was fired Yesterday's
fifty eight and his famous rant, I would say, was
(05:01):
a viral moment pre social media, right, Twitter didn't exist,
Instagram didn't exist. If I'm forty, I'm a man. Well,
if he's fifty eight, that was eighteen years ago. I
mean that was I would say, a massive moment. It's
one of the more viral moments for a coach, I
would say, of my lifetime, right, any sport, and it
(05:22):
used to happen more like when I was a kid
with like baseball managers had some legendary ones Ditka Jimora playoffs,
but the Gundhy thing was pretty legendary. And then he
went on to just have, I mean, an incredible career,
and I just wanted to start by. I was thinking
about this last night because I saw some stats. One,
I don't think my Gundy's ever gonna exist again. You know,
(05:43):
we saw Bobby Bowden, Sabin, these guys that got to
coach for a long time. Those are all time outliers.
But Gundhy was the rare. I played there. I was
an assistant coach there. He spent basically ten years as
an assistant, four years as a player, and then twenty
I mean, you're talking well over thirty years. He's fifty eight.
It's over half his life in one spot. Which some
(06:03):
of this stuff, like I'm all for living in the
future in progress, It is kind of sad that the
day and age of like the guy that's just interwoven
with that franchise, we're never going to see that again.
I you know, I the player the assistant coach, then
the guy the coaches for that many years, it's over.
And the other thing that's kind of sad is, you know,
(06:24):
Oklahoma State. I didn't realize how much he won, I mean,
twelve and six in bowl games. He was I think
his record was like one hundred and seventy and ninety.
He had all these like ten and eleven and twelve
win seasons. Even as bats, he's like winning eight nine games.
He was just winning a lot. Was They had T
Boone Pickens, who was kind of pill Night. But the
(06:46):
rules you couldn't just give guys hundreds of thousands of dollars.
They probably you know, gave some guy the brown Backs.
But he died in twenty nineteen. And he gave those
comments a couple of weeks ago to Dillingham, and you know,
everyone you knows the kids would say, dragged him right. Oh,
Like looking back, I think he wus be like, we
don't have we cannot Like T. Boom doesn't exist anymore.
I don't know what his family's doing with the fortune,
(07:08):
but they're clearly not giving him money to buy the
players like Texas Tech, and his comments were like kind
of represented like I think OSU is an awful job.
And I do think Big twelve when we saw Dillingham
remember a couple of years ago, is like begging people
for money. Now they're doing a little bit better now,
but still like I do think Big twelve in the
conference relative to the Big ten, who I think has
(07:28):
benefited the most from nil and the SEC that just
has you know, would be the next in line. I
think it's gonna be very difficult for some of their programs.
You know, SMU will be fine, TCU will be fine,
obviously Texas Tech. But OSU, now I see some of
these people getting like this guy take the job, Like,
I think it's gonna be difficult for them. Because a
guy goes there, it's like it's my career. I am I
(07:50):
gonna be able to win there. So I I just
wanted to tip Mike Gundy a little before your time
that that rant you were pretty young, but obviously as
you get into college football, he's a pretty legendary figure.
And I saw his brother, Cale, who used to be
at Oklahoma, said he's going to coach again, and I
don't know, I mean it ended pretty bad, but his resume.
(08:10):
I mean, if you see some of these guys that
can reget jobs, you would think that a Big twelve
team or maybe an ACC team. And I think his
big regret has to be you know, Tennessee several years
ago offered him the job, and I knew a buddy
that was going to go with him on the personnel side,
and obviously Mike had slept on it and was just very,
(08:32):
very loyal to a school that he was like Pat Fitzgerald,
the school meant everything to him. Like I thought about
this yesterday the day he was fired. Even though I
mean they were like four and eleven over the last
fifteen games. They didn't win a conference game last year,
so it had gotten pretty ugly around there had to
be pretty emotional for him in that school. Would be
like a you know, a wife or a family member,
(08:54):
like just you know, just getting a divorce, like forty
plus years in even if it's going bad, So sad
day with Mike Gundy, who's just one of the integral
characters in the sport of college football.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Yeah, you were talking about how we'll probably never see
a guy that was a player or assistant that loved
the school and wanted to stay there forever. Just a
couple of names that came to mind that are today's
I guess that could be that version of Gundy is
Brent Key of Georgia Tech, Clark Lee Vanderbilt, Kenny Dillingham
of ASU. But it's like what you're talking about with
all this money in the SEC, It's like, yeah, Kenny Dillingham,
(09:27):
you could say you want to be on Arizona State
and the more he talks about how he loves Arizona
State and he's grown up be a sun devil. But
what if Florida offers you so and so money and
you have the amount of resources that Florida has, or
Florida State has or all these other big schools, Like
do you think that those type of guys will be
loyal forever? You think money talks and it's like, Okay,
well I can't. I can't turn down this offer from
(09:47):
Kenny Dillingham. But you've loved and want to build something.
I respect that Kenny Dillingham wanting to stay at ASU,
but long term, like we got to be real. If
Florida comes knock and you're gonna go over there eventually.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
I think both the other guys that you to Georgia
Tech and Vanderbilt, Like, how do they turn down? If
you know, if Kirby Smart would ever leave or whatever,
you know, go to the NFL Georgia called, if Florida calls,
if sar you know, a couple of years go to
coach Cowboys and Texas calls. It's just it never works
(10:18):
out that way. Now you can stay, you know, Gundhy
he was making elite money even though their program. But
once Oklahoma left and Texas left, the writing was kind
of on the wall. But who knows if Tennessee obviously
hypels doing a really good job there. They were just
in the playoffs that they're good again this year. I mean,
(10:40):
he's running a high level program. I like to give
Gundy the benefit of doubt that it would be the
same thing if he was there, And if he was there,
he would be in a place with more resources. That
football is just more of a priority. And he's got
to be thinking, God, I was loyal and ended up
biting me in the ass. And who knows. I I
was listening to Josh Pate say that he had heard
(11:03):
that it's you know, I Gundy mailed it in a
little bit. You know, you just get to a point
where it's like it's like an inevitable divorce, but you're
still living together and you barely talk. I clearly he's
not going well there. But yeah, I mean I just
Clark Lee Brinky no chance. If you tell me in
twenty years, I would bet every penny I have. I'd
(11:23):
bet my home, I'd bet everything I have that if
it goes well for the one. If it goes bad,
they'll get fired. If it goes well, they just they
just kept too many opportunities. I would say both those
guys a couple more years of winning. They're just like
the number one candidate on the board, Like Matt Campbell
would be a guy that he stayed pretty loyal, right, Yeah,
(11:44):
he's been there forever.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
And it feels like every single name, like his name
was tied to the Alabama job when Saban retired, he
was tied to Florida when Napier got hired. He's always
been tied to certain jobs. And you know, as we
get into the five burning questions hitting in this weekend
on the topic of Gundy, let's talk about Dabo. You know,
Gundy gets fired midseason. All this talk around Dabo Sweeney
(12:06):
and he's kind of frustrated with the fans, and I
don't know what the word is in terms of the
athletic department in the school itself. I think they want
to keep Sweeney just because of the contract they're tied to.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
They can't really do anything.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Besides, if he wants to go, we kind of pull
like a Calipari and goes to Arkansas because you know,
I'm tired of all this. This fan base is on
my neck. I want to go somewhere that appreciates me.
And maybe he goes to the SEC. But what are
your thoughts on Dabo? Could he be the next coach?
Because it's a disaster rate And I mean this Clemson team,
I picked it with a national championship, and I kind
of sit back and I'm like, wait, how does this happen?
(12:38):
How does a team with so much talent go one
in three and get blown.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Out by Syracuse at home? Yeah? You know, he gave
that impassion rant like a week ago, Yeah, like the
week of good all. But all we've done is won
like eight of ten years, We've won whatever many games
we win this conference. And then after he lost to Syracuse,
he was basically went the other way of like I'm
a human. This really sucks. He almost was in tears.
(13:03):
He almost felt bad for him. But Gottlieb described got
leave the Oklahoma State guy. He's like, you know, Gundhy's
probably a more abrasive personality behind the scenes than Dabbo.
He just said. Over the years, you know, Gundy had
made some enemies, which happens with college football coaches because
of the power. Well, when you're winning, your enemies on
the in the university have no juice. Right, you're winning
(13:23):
twelve games, winning bowl games, they can't say shit. You
start losing, those enemies gravitate toward each other and have
a coalition coming for you. And that's what happened to Gundy,
right the Dabbo thing. Clemson's always had unrealistic expectations before
he even I remember they thinking like national championships back
with Terry Bowden when they weren't even It was like,
you have a bunch of NFL guys and you're winning
(13:44):
eight games, Like who do you guys think you are?
Dabbo did change it, but like things change, and listen,
he didn't necessarily change. My advice would be and who knows,
Like if you told Florida fans right now, you hire
Dabo Sweeney, they probably wouldn't be that happy, right, They'd
rather have John Gruden, which to me is kind of crazy.
Never coaching college too. He wasn't even that good the
(14:04):
last time he coached for the Raiders. But like, okay,
would you take Lane over Dabbo? But what if Lane
is like actually being real, Like I don't want to
leave Oxford? Right, we have the resources. If I was Dabbo,
I'd be working behind the scenes to try to give
myself a landing spot because we see the way this
works once the snowball kind of comes. You know, this
isn't like a Norvel, Like Dabo's been there forever with
(14:25):
twenty three years as an assistant as a head coach,
the pelts on the wall, so he's emotionally like fighting back,
you know, like Norvel kind of had to take it
on the chin last year, right, give money back that
Dabo still gets very defensive over this stuff. If I
was him, I'd pivot, you know, And I think there's
something in coaching where you've been there long enough and
it starts going the wrong way. Maybe your message you
(14:48):
just need a fresh start. He's those two coordinators that
he won the Natties with obviously got head coaching jobs
and Venables and Tony, Uh, what's the Virginia coach is
Tony Elliott? Yeah, So, I mean the that was a
trio that was a power right, and once those guys left,
it kind of doesn't feel the same. But yeah, man,
it's it was. Were obviously on a big text thread
(15:10):
and our main man chained Syracuse alum. And then they
were dancing on that grave because they were. I was
at the golf course and I kind of watched the
beginning of it and then as the game went, it
got delayed forever, right, So I thought when it got delayed,
I was like, oh, this is gonna be a classic
Clemson delayed, Syracuse goes, oh we come out of the delay,
we lay an egg. But they didn't. And I would say,
(15:33):
right now they look like turnaround like no, I mean,
I would say six and six like that. Who knows
they could lose to anybody.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
The only thing I would say for Dabo, obviously, the
whole notion on him and them starting bad is everyone's like, well,
he doesn't use the portal.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Yeah, that's the reason why they're losing.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Well, yes, I mean they had three transfers, but they're
ranked like forty fifth in terms of like the transfer
portal rankings. The only hesitancy I would have if I
did grab Dabo i was Florida or another school would be, Hey,
you're gonna have to open up to what's going on
in college football. You're gonna have to open up to
the new style of adapting and going into the portal.
Not saying you got to be like a Bill Belichick
(16:10):
and grab forty five guys or Deon Sanders or grabbed fifteen.
But if you're Florida and your Dabo Sweeney, you're telling
me you can't grab eight of the top fifty transfer
portal guys.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
You know what I mean? Like, I feel like that's
something that people, well, he runs like a company that
he views it. If I don't get to vet the
guy when they're like sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, I don't touch them.
Their big thing is like the type guys they bring
into the family. Right. It's like, bro, you have to
learn all these other programs are quote unquote vetting these
guys in the transfer portal. You know you're probably not
(16:41):
landing someone in the transfer portal too that doesn't at
a school like that like Ohio State. Think who they
got in the transfer portal. Guys from like Alabama, right,
or guys within their conference that they know. You don't
have to just get like random dude, Like you should
have some that's part of your personnel department. So I'm
with you, like it's but if he won't do some
(17:02):
self reevaluation, then yeah, then maybe it's just gonna end
really badly and no one will touch him. But it's
I think it's gonna get uglier as the year goes
because all it would take like Syracuse obviously a you know,
solid program, but you lose to one of these like
not very good teams. They played North Carolina this week, Yeah, no,
they have a bye week and they played North Carolina
(17:22):
next week. Yeah, something like that happens, like UNC beats them,
then then it'll feel like dab I I just jump
ship and it'd be one of those where it's just
like a clean break, you know, the buyout stuff to say, hey,
you can go Calipari style, and I think he'd have
to entertain that and it's not because like he gets
so defensive. I One Championship. Yeah, that's that's the path
(17:43):
Shaun Watson, you know, whose NFL career is over? Like,
what are we talking about Trevor Lawrence. Like, Trevor Lawrences
been in the league for how many years? And they'll
he won the championship when he was a true freshman,
when he beat Alabama. Now he'd be like, well, we
were in the playoffs last year. Kind of lucky. When
he started the season, he lost by one hundred to
Kirby's probably seventh best Georgia team. Doesn't help that his
(18:05):
quarterback stinks too. I mean, Kate Klebwick's been horrible. If
he does go to Florida, it's like, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
He's missed on He's missed on quarterbacks now, yeah, back
to back since Trevor Lawrence. Yeah, dju I think they
had Hunter Johnson who was a bad, bad player. So yeah,
you're right, speaking of quarterbacks. A guy that Oklahoma didn't miss.
But a tragic injury. Oklahoma quarterback John Matterier out for
three plus weeks, broken bone on the right throwing hand.
I'm not much of a doctor, but that type of
(18:31):
injury with the team with so much momentum, and I
guess the hindsight positive about this is it's now when
they have a bye week. They play ken State next week.
It's a bummer about red River, but who knows if
he grinds it out and maybe he plays that football game,
but they're gonna need him to throw the football against
that Texas defense. I mean, he's gonna be out three
weeks before that grueling started their schedule where they got
(18:53):
South Carolina, Miszoo, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee. What was your take
in response to this, because I mean, this guy was
the face of college football. Now it seems like Oklahoma's
a little bit of a panic after this injury kind
of came and came to be.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
I'm always hesitant with the weeks. It's like, are we
sure three weeks? That seems pretty optimistic fast. Yeah, yeah,
especially throwing hand. I do wonder. I'm sure venables and
they'll talk about it this week. I guess because they
had the bye week, maybe their press conference schedule was
a little off. That's why they were able to hide it.
You know, the adrenaline coming out of that game. Maybe
he got hit in the hand, didn't even realize, played
(19:28):
through it in the next day. It's swollen, he can't
move it, and a little lucky they have a buye
this week in Kent State. But it really sucks for
that Red River game. Then all of a sudden was
looking like because if you're Oklahoma, you gotta be thinking
we're a playoff team. We got one of the best defenses,
we got this quarterback who can run and throw. We
just got a lot of good vibes. And now all
(19:49):
of a sudden, we could just lose to Texas and
the shitty version of Arch and all of a sudden,
then our backs against the wall and do we rush
the guy back? It sucks. I mean, that was I
don't know what else say beside that's I guess could
be worse. It's not like a devastating end of the
year injury, but broken bone on your hand. I'm sure
he's gonna have to wear a splinter or a cast
(20:10):
for a minute. You just you never know how it recovers.
What if you can't grit the ball in three weeks
really sucks for him. I mean because they I don't
want to say like national championship, but if if you're
an Oklahoma fanuely well, we got a high level defense
that translates and if our offense just solid with this quarterback,
why couldn't we be in like the final four. Yeah,
and you just lose all of a sudden, you lose
(20:32):
a Texas and he's not ready the next week. You
could just lose a couple of games in the SEC
and it's just too much to overcome when he does
come back, because they could they could easily lose a
game with him. I mean, hell, they had ten sacks
in the game. Was close last week. Now, Auburn, it
turns out, I think, is pretty solid this year, but
which was a really good win. They've had a couple
of really good wins at home, but they got some
tough road games and obviously the Texas game is just
(20:54):
the neutral site game. So who's our backup quarterback? The
little guy from last year?
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Yeah, so it's the sophomore Michael Hawkins junior, which I
kind of I mean, we talk about Arch playing bad
and how dominant Oklahoma's defense is this situation versus last
year Michael Hawkins junior, who's a sophomore and he's kind
of that same athletic, dual threat quarterback. He's in a
better situation this year because one, you got Ben Arbuckle,
who was a better play caller than what they had
last year.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Too.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
When he was playing Texas, their top five wide receivers
were hurt. So now you've got more wide receiver health
back this year. Your offensive line's improved now. The one
thing would be he played in Red River last year
against that Texas defense and he looked like he was
seeing ghosts, so that it was a trophy.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Yeah, it was very bad last year, so you hope
that he improves this year on that front.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
But my biggest concern with them is they can't run
the football at all. I mean Jada Ott, the col transfer.
We talked in the preseason, how excited you know, Naggy
talking about this Cal transfer guy coming in and what
he did with Jayda Ott at Cal last year and
this year he's only had like nine carries for seventeen yards,
hasn't really played, so it's like you don't have a
running game. The compliment with Hawkins Junior, like, yeah, you
want to be able to run the football with him,
(22:01):
what MATERII was usage with Hawkins, but you can't run
the football with him, and you want to have a
quarterback that couldn't throw the ball at all against Texas,
had a couple throws maybe against Auburn. Like, it's just
kind of a skeptical situation for Oklahoma where Hawkins is
getting into a better situation, but like you're not helping
him in terms of the running game that you've had before.
So it's just kind of an all a puzzling situation
(22:23):
for Hawkins Junior. You just kind of hope and pray
that that I don't know, Matier gets back, but do
you want to rush him with the schedule you have
moving forward? It just kind of all becomes a puzzling
situation to a team that basically one September.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Yeah, tough Spot, Super tough Spot. Today's show is brought
to you by a new presenting sponsor, hard Rock Bet.
Week four kicks off tonight with a divisional battle between
Seattle and Arizona. I want you to check out these
streaks from hard Rock bet stats up. Do you know
(22:58):
that the Seahawks they've won seven in a row against
the Cards that goes back to twenty twenty one. They've
also won seven in a row just road games, so
they're playing really well on the road. I typically like
the home team on these short weeks, but I don't
like I love Seattle minus one and a half Thursday
Night football. I also like Sam Donald might be my
favorite bet of the night over one and a half touchdowns.
(23:21):
You get that in the plus money and the Cardinal
secondaries beat up, and I think they're in major trouble.
If you haven't tried your first bet on hard Rock Bet,
there's still time for you to get one hundred and
fifteen bonus bets if you win. Just place a five
dollar bet and if it hits, you not only get
your winnings, but you also get one hundred and fifteen
bonus bets. Plus Tonight on hard Rock Bet, you can
get a Thursday Night Parlay boost for the game boost,
(23:44):
your same Game Parlay or SGP Max, so your bet
pays extra winnings payable in bonus bets, not a cash

Speaker 2 (24:33):
Let's move on to the biggest games of the weekend.
Six Oregon at three Penn State. The question is, will
James Franklin finally win.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
The big one he's one in seventeen against top ten
Big ten opponents, or will Oregon prove they're the new
national power. You know what's funny I was just thinking
about this is that like some coaches that are really polarizing,
Like after he lost to Florida State, everyone's like fire
Kalondi Bull. He beat Georgia last year. So like the
(25:02):
moment you win one of those games, it's like that's
just a huge win on your resume. Remember Brian Kelly,
I think his first year beat Saban in a walkoff
touchdown and it was pretty sweet, like the corner of
the end zone, like quick, a little out and it
was awesome. So it's like sometimes when you're you know,
you just get a big win early, it just takes
we can bitch and moan like, ah, he doesn't win
(25:24):
enough games, but no one can argue like can you
win the big game? And both those guys are bad examples,
because Kaitlin won a bunch of big games at Washington
beating you know, Dan Lanning and Kyle Whittingham and Steve
Sarkisi and obviously Kelly has won big games over the
years with Notre Dame. But this guy has been in
a program that has just pumped out NFL guys I
think we all think is really good, which is crazy
(25:47):
because they feel as good, if not better than last year.
And they're missing two guys. Abduel Carter and Tyler Warren
are like Locke first Team all rookie players, right, they're elite,
Both those two guys elite players. So you know, it's
not very often since Landing has been there, and honestly
since Mario did like Oregon has been like a legit,
(26:07):
we don't think you're gonna win this game. So it's
like kind of an easy spot for him to kind
of rally the troops if if if James Camp eventually
you're either gonna win a game like that or you
just maybe he's never going to It's gonna be one
of those gay you just can never beat anyone good.
So I got burned by them against you guys last
year when when Aler threw that there across his body.
(26:28):
That's the thing. It's he plays in these games like
Ohio State last year. It's like he's right there, Notre Dame.
He's either winning or like he's down a touchdown, but
he's on the goal line. And then you look back,
You're like, how did he lose that game? Or how
did he not? How did they end up just running
out the clock and they didn't even score. It's last year.
Remember they they got stuffed at the goal line against
(26:49):
Ohio State and then Ohio State ran the ball out
against Oregon in the championship game. I remember they kind
of you could tell Oregon was better, which that's why
it was kind of ironic that then Oregon got curb
stomped against Ohio Say, they didn't even look like they
look like a different team. I mean, I want to
pick Penn State here, but I've been burned by him
a couple of times. It would be just a nice win,
(27:11):
everyone could exhale a little bit because then I think
they win this game, especially if they want it by
like a touchdown or more. And look, you know, the
buck the better team. I think a lot of people
would start being like, okay them, Miami, whoever, the cream
of the crop is in the SEC, like this is
the top three or four teams that can win the
national championship. And I think people are still hesitant on
Penn State. This is a huge game for them, This
(27:33):
is a big and that place is awesome right night
game white Out. I just think Oregon, it just doesn't
feel like very often they get to just kind of
like let it fly.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Yeah, I agree, And I think if it's not now,
then when is it gonna be.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
For James Franklin.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
I mean, this is a quarterback coming in that hasn't
had a road environment, road game like this in his career.
So that's like the biggest question mark with Dante more
But you've seen him the last couple of games, even
though they haven't played anybody. Some of the placements on
these balls, the accuracy from him, he doesn't look like
will Stein and his ability to develop quarterbacks is pretty insane,
Like he's one of the more underrated coaches in college football.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
And they got a freshman at wide.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Receiver, so you wonder how he's gonna adapt against Penn
State's defense.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
And like you said, like a whiteout game, they're coming
off of a bye week. Oregon's not.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
But I don't know, man, this Oregon team and how
talented they are in the trenches on both sides, and
Dan Lanning's ability to recruit. Like, you're right, the pressures
all on James Franklin. You'd rather win this game versus
having to win a must win at Ohio State, something
they haven't done since twenty eleven, something that even James
Franklin hasn't even done even when they had Saquon And
you know, all those studs on offense, they still are
(28:40):
not able to You talk about that game too, when
when JT Barrett the last second through that pass, I
forget to who, maybe Garrett Wilson or Terry McLaurin. But this,
to me, you're right, it's the biggest, biggest game for
Penn State. I kind of would love to see Oregon
win this game, to see the panic of James Franklin,
see how much sleepy can't get for the rest of
the season.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
If they do is this football game.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
But watch out for Oregon's got some studs that Kenya
Sadik the tight end out of Oregon. He'll be a
guy that's playing on Sundays. He could be a guy
that explodes and opens up the running game for Oregon.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
I think the problem whoever loses this game is throughout
a season, it's inevitable that good teams will just be like, hey,
tie game against Rutgers fourth quarter, and every once in
a while, remember I think iowall beat one of the
Urban Meyer teams. Like there are big, big upsets in
these big conferences because it's hard to play your best
(29:31):
football twelve weeks. But even if you get upset, if
you're Penn State and you win this game, it's like, Okay,
you lose. Let's say you lose a random game to
one of these teams on the road that you probably
are a big favorite. We don't we Oh, you just
didn't take him as seriously, but we take you seriously.
We know what your ceiling is. This is a really
important game from Penn State. From a ceiling standpoint, I
(29:54):
want to like him, but I'm with you. I think,
you know, Lanning got something pretty special there. And the
thing with more is athletically arm strength, Like he's an
elite Blue Chipper. Everyone's you know, loves Bryce Underwood like
that's kind of what Moore is, you know, in terms
of like the total package of what he can bring
to the table. No one remembers watching him a couple
(30:15):
of years ago with Chip Kelly's offense, and he was atrocious,
but he was thrown in on a bad team in
a year when the Pac twelve was good, you know,
and he got it went bad and then he kind
of got it's pretty rare to go to Oregon. Reset.
He was supposed to go to Oregon out of high school.
He was a huge recruit, and then Chip somehow flipped
him because I think he realized I could start there
(30:36):
and he got to kind of sit behind Dylan Gabriel
last year. And by all accounts, I mean, it's crazy
how positive. Obviously he's playing well, but the way that
they've been talking about him really since the spring feels
like too.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
A lot of top quarterbacks, you know, nuss Meyer arch
all this preseason hype on a bunch of quarterbacks haven't
been playing to the expectations. And a guy that's kind
of been under the radar that hasn't played as well
for as bad copy petition is Drew Aller, Like that's
another name for him. It's like, Okay, this is a
big game for you to kind of get that national spotlight.
What will this offense look? Like you mentioned Tyler Warren.
(31:08):
They're gonna be able to run the football with Allen
and Singleton. They ran for over three hundred yards against
pen against Oregon in the Big Ten championship game.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
Still lost that game.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
So I'm wondering, from from Penn State's offensive standpoint, are
they gonna be able to throw against Oregon?
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Like? Are these transfer wide receivers they're gonna mesh well?
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Because it's easy to mesh well against FYU, Villanova and
all these teams.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
But worth third and eight, how are you? What are
you gonna do?
Speaker 2 (31:30):
You know against his Oregon defense and Drew Aller Like,
this is like a showtime type of game for him
in terms of an NFL draft standpoint, I don't know
where you stand on him, but this is like a
proven game for him when all the other quarterbacks are
kind of down.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
This has got a Heisman type of moment for both quarterbacks. Yeah.
I mean, to me, he's got three or four games
this year, they're gonna find his draft status because no
one cares what he did against FIU or Nevada, what
he does against Oregon, what he does against Ohio State.
If they make the conference championship game, and then and
then the playoff games he plays well, I mean, he's
gonna be a top ten to fifteen pick right because
(32:03):
the measurables, the arm strength, the improvement that he's made
over a three years period. So I think there's a
lot of Now he shits the bed, all of a sudden,
he could disappear, and he can disappear fast, you know.
So it's I don't know. He makes me nervous speaking
of should the bed and possibly disappear in A guy
that not too hot in Alabama right now? Is Kaylan
(32:23):
de Boor.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
They go into Georgia seventeen Alabama at five Georgia. The
question is, can Kaylen de Boor finally win a big
road game. He's one to zero against Kirby Smart, Kirby
Smart's one in six against Alabama all the time.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Or will Georgia's longest home streak thirty three game win
streak continue to hold against Alabama. I will say this
the stanchion, the stink of the Florida State loss, I
think is worse because people expected Florida State to really
suck and I think Florida State is gonna be pretty good,
so I think that game could age pretty well. And listen,
(32:59):
they got their butt kick. The eye test was bad, right,
that was part of it. The eye test was like
kind of like the Ravens against the Lions, like you
kind of got worked. You know. It wasn't like one
hundred to nothing, but it was whatever. They walked by
a couple of touchdowns, but it looked worse in the
final score. I'll say this about Kaitlin, he beats good
coaches when he's gone head to head. We said this
(33:20):
with Landing with Kyle Whittingham. He's just last year with
Kirby Smart like he's done really well in these type moments.
Now I don't really the young quarterback has looked better,
like the Alabama's clearly looked a lot better since they
played Florida State and now they haven't played anybody. You know,
Georgia really got tested, like Georgia showed something like they
(33:43):
got like that win against Tennessee was impressive, like that
they easily could have lost, not only you know the
way it ended, but they were down what twenty one
seven on the road. You probably couldn't hear yourself think
that thing could have got away from them. So, you know,
the metal, the championship kind of mindset that Kirby brings,
it's sabing like so, I think there's probably more mentally
(34:06):
tough in Georgia. Like you said, you know, they're one
and six, you'd be like, well, Kirby's been there like
a decade. They don't play each other that often, Like
for a long time they were just playing each other
in the conference championship game. It's not like on a
yearly rotation like LSU. So it's hard, Like, you know,
I'm so used to Bama LSU or LSU Florida or
Georgia Tennessee this this game when we do get it
(34:27):
in the regular season. We've got it back to back
years now. I think it was pretty stunning last year
the way it transpired. Now, I know they came storming
back and Carson Beck just started throwing bombs. I mean
It's kind of like Russell Wilson. You just throw gill
rauts and post rides. You're gonna hit some and or
when you hit them, you can score touchdowns. And then
you could be down twenty eight points and all of
(34:49):
a sudden, it's, you know, a one score game, but
like you're up twenty eight nothing on an opponent, like
they came out the gates. And that's the Kaylin dow
Boor thing. I remember when they beat uh when he
was at why shouldn't he beat Oregon in the PAC
twelve Championship. They start so fast. If Bama starts fast,
they're winning this game. I don't see Bama like down
seventeen to seven and coming back. But if you tell
(35:09):
me this is one of your Kailin du Boor's great
game plans, and it's like thirteen to three at the
end of the first quarter, obviously you have to hold on.
That's the way usually these games play out. But I
like Bama wins if they start fast. If they don't
and they're trailing, I'm out. You could argue live bet
this game if that's the way you want to take it.
But you know, with the Boor like they start fast
(35:31):
they did against in the chant in the final four
against Sark Like he jumps out to the Leeds because
his game plans. Him and Grub historically have been elite.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Yeah, and it feels like when they don't start fast
Vanderbilt Oklahoma, Tennessee last year, that's when they tend to
the effort defensive league gets gets weak, the self inflicted penalties.
The bor kinda is a little quiet pacing up down
the sideline.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Well, that's why he's not a raw raw like Kirby's
a rally the troops guy. Right. These guys are crazy soobs,
the Hardbob Brothers, Dan Campbell, like Andy Reid bumping into
Travis Kelcey, which isn't even Andy style. But he's got
it in his back pocket. That is Caylin de Borr
is not a yeller and a screamer. It's clear right,
(36:17):
he so to me. He's more of a slow, steady,
offensive cerebral mind, which he gets ahead of you then
he starts working his magic. He's behind Kirby fine, right,
Dabbo Historically when his teams were good, he has a
lot of juice. It's not really Brian Kelly, I don't
know if his screams are heard, but he'll start screaming
at you.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Yeah, he'll be screaming a ton. That's one thing too
about this game. You know, we talked preseason about Alabama
and Georgia. The one thing that you can't really harsh on,
the biggest question mark for both teams was the quarterbacks.
Ty Simpsons looked impressive. It wasn't his fault against Florida State.
His offensive line basically got bullied and then Gunnar Stocked
in that fourth and eighth throw. He had the London
Humphries in that Tennessee game game on the line, absolute
(37:01):
dime over the shoulder throw. I think it's interesting to
see which quarterback. But more importantly, it seems like this
year for Georgia Alabama there's not a lot of buzz
on both sides of the offensive defensive line. And maybe
it was like last year around this time when Georgia
Alabama played is when we found out the names of
Mikel Williams and Jalen Walker and they kind of like
soared throughout the rest of the season. But it feels
like in this game, obviously, you know, the trenches battle,
(37:22):
whoever wins the trench is gonna win, but both offensive
lines and defensive lines are shaky, So you wonder, I
guess which quarterback is gonna perform and which who's gonna
kind of be dominant on both sides.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
You know, you're probably deeper on the like the college
reddit boards and the and the rumors. I see the
the Landry Kiffin thing. But one thing I've heard people
say is Carson Beck wasn't that well liked toward the end,
Like the players didn't like him, and Gunner Stockton's like
one of the dudes, and that that was a big
(37:51):
like selling point this offseason. And it's like, well, why
I'm watching Carson back in Miami. He actually looks fine, Like, yeah,
it might be a weird guy, might have all the
friends on the team, but like if you can if
you're better at football than this guy, it does give
you the better chance to win. And that's where it
was huge for Gunner Stockton in that Tennessee moment to
go on the road and win that game, because one
thing to be liked, you know, inevitably, it's like can
(38:14):
this guy help us win or not? And he made
huge plays and you know, people were very critical of
his greatest teams with Stetson Bennett, Like is this guy
good enough? This double walk on? Like what the hell
are we doing this? Georgia, Matt Stafford, Aaron Murray, Like,
guys you can draft really high. Even Carson Beck was
discussed like a number one overall pick Gunner Stockton. But
(38:38):
if he can, like you're not playing Tua right or
Jalen Hurts or one of his Bryce Young Like this
is Ty Simpson again? Solid player, But I mean, I
don't think anyone's viewing him a couple of games into
his career as like a top pick by any means.
He has more I would say, of like a Sets
of Bennet type feel to him. Yeah, that's a been
(39:00):
Remember in their championship game, had some incredible throws. So
he's still in the league. On the rams, the thirst
string quarterback. I just think that whoever, whatever quarterback, one
of these quarterbacks is gonna shit the bed in one
of these games. And I don't know who.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
To your point, I feel like even Ty Simpson in Alabama,
Bryan Grubb and Kaylin de boor kind of a rally
around a guy like him that's a pocket passer versus
Jalen Milroe, and you know, maybe it was the offensive scheme,
maybe it was just Jayalen Milroe not be able to
read the short intermediate routes, but it felt like any
time that something wasn't open, Milroe was so like eager
to get out of the pocket and run. Whereas ty
(39:49):
Simpson has got a sat back, they've got a good
receiver trio. Like both sides have really good wide receivers
and tight ends. So that's what's gonna be fun about
this matchup is like you said, like who's gonna kind
of step up between those two quarterbacks and who's gonna kind.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Of shit the bed?
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yeah, a lot of answers for both teams, Like this
could go either way, but you just at Georgia at home.
It's just like it's tough for me not to root
for Georgia and lean Georgia.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
There.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
But another sec game lsu at Ole Miss you talked
about it Landry Kiffin, Lane Kiffin's daughter the week of
I don't know if that's a lame thing. I don't
know if Langer Kiffin wants to just kind of stir
the potter maybe get more fame because she's obviously been
the discussion the entire time.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
Well, she hard launched with Weeks.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Who's the linebacker from LSU at eighteen tackles last year
against ole Miss?
Speaker 1 (40:36):
One sack? This has kind of another game too, like
Alabama Georgia.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Well, we'll get a lot of answers, but LSU more
importantly kind of fraud summer saint fraudulent. That game against
Clemson looked impressive on the road, but Clemson hasn't panned out.
Ole Miss is kind of you know, on the rise.
Can they expose LSU as pretenders? But this, to me,
the question for this game is LSU a legit playoff
national contender or will all Miss expose him as pretenders
(41:02):
in this matchup?
Speaker 1 (41:03):
I would say if LSU is, they win this game
and their defense has been unreal offensively. I mean, a
couple of people thought that he was a top pick.
You know, I don't know if his skill set historically
is like a top ten pick, but he might just
be the best of this group in dus Meyer helps.
You know, he's clearly like a coaches kid, super smart,
but his skill set, you know, it's to me, it's
(41:26):
much closer to some of the average guys than it
is like the elite tools. Guys. Now, football is about
more than that, right, But I also think if you
know Lane wins this game, he would have beat Brian
Kelly to in the last three years when Brian has
NFL play, did he beat him last year? I forget. Yeah,
he's definitely over. He's kind of he's kind of he's
(41:47):
kinda owned Brian Kelly, right, and Brian's had Jaden Daniels
and nuss Meyer. And now it's one thing like he
loses Dart he's got this quarterback situation. But also, you
win this game, all of a sudden, to me, he
becomes the number one candidate if I'm Florida, right, And
then I think that kind of just builds on each
other on itself. You were telling me his documentaries coming out.
(42:08):
He clearly quit drinking. He looks fantastic, He's lost a
bunch of weight. He does feel like a different guy,
and there is no disputing like his offensive prowess now
because defensively they're clearly not as good, but scoring points,
he is dominated with different coordinators. A couple of years ago, right,
Levy was his OC. He's now at Missippi State. Like
Lane's really good. And I'm sure he gets this from
(42:30):
his dad. He's been around football is while life, putting
together staffs, different guys. I just think you win this
game complete ownage over Brian Kelly. And we just started
talking about this guy of Like, I don't know how
you'd argue that his status is one of the top coaches,
Like he's not coaching at Texas or Georgia or Ohio State,
(42:52):
Like this is a place that I think when he
won double digit games a couple of years ago, back
to back years, the first time it ever happened in the
history of the program. So and he's doing it, you know,
new transfer portal King or whatever he's known as. Uh.
I just have a hard time picking Lane against it.
Now at home, he's kind of been bitching this week
that the game's during the day. He's like, if we
(43:13):
were at LSU, you know, other thing would be a
night game, or at Georgia, you know, other thing's gonna
be a night game and they play here the sun's out.
But Lane's pretty good at doing those japs. That's why
if you told me, like did he tell her to
do that? To know, like his fan base would start
fucking with him. I think he's involved, you know, because
it's not like he doesn't know his daughter's dating or
I mean anyone that follows the family on social media.
(43:34):
They're pretty tight knit group.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
If he does this with I think one thing about
Lane Kivin that's underrated too is his ability to grab
quarterbacks out of everywhere, like their quarterback that's gonna play
this game. Not a lot of people know him. He
played the last two games against Tulane in Arkansas. But
his name's Trinidad Chambliss and he was a transfer from
Farris State Division two national champion. He's kind of coming
to the scene and he was He came in at
(43:58):
spring transfer portal and a bunch of people are like,
who's this guy from Paris State, who's this Division two guy?
Oh well, Austin Simmons is going to start. Nineteen year
old four star like he was the backup behind Jackson Dart.
He gets hurt against Kentucky, throws two interceptions. This Champleiss
guy comes in and the team around him, the fan
bases around him. Their offense looks a lot more explosive,
(44:18):
and he's kind of that dual threat. He's six to one.
He goes in and beats Brian Kelly. With this guy
a Division two transfer coming in he's only played two
games played Division two. Well you got Garrett Nussmer who
played all last year. He's had a rough start, but
he's got more you know, starts under his belt in
the SEC. Like you want to talk about stunting your
nuts on the SEC. And I don't know on Brian Kelly,
(44:38):
you with this big game, Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (44:40):
Like I would say though, and I've been in part
of smaller schools at Cal Paul and Present State, you
do have guys that are playing there that could go
to a top program and be an immediate impact guy.
And I think that's the one thing cool about the
transfer portal is you get like Jared Verse from Albany
going too Florida State or this situation where before he
(45:01):
probably just would have played at fair State right his
whole career and like some scout bangs the table and
he goes in the six or seventh round and you're like,
what who they draft? And nowadays, like that guy is
just like the D one Double A guys and the
D two guys. I know the way these personnel departments
would just give me who's the MVP of the league,
who's the stat leader. We should just get some evaluation
(45:24):
on him, see if it's worth it. And then Boomy
started dming them, and you don't know, I bet when
they did it, like they it was like this is
kind of a diamond. They didn't expect him to start
right because, like you said, Jackson Dart's backup, highly recruited guy.
But hey, if we can find a depth piece as
a backup quarterback from Montana or Farris State or whatever,
let's do it. And that's what sucks about those little schools.
(45:46):
They never had to. If you're a fairri state twenty
years ago and you had a potential seventh round pick
or whatever, you didn't need to worry about some SEC
school calling him. That never happened.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
That's one thing I do think it's cool about the
portal is this year's seeing it like John here went
from Washington State explodes, Joey Aguilar from as State to
Tennessee explodes this guy, Like, I think it is cool.
It sucks for the smallert too cool for the kids,
those guys, but it is cool, like to see those
guys get the opportunity and transfering and I just think overall,
like programs like ole Miss, programs like UH Oklahoma that
(46:20):
are going and experience these guys at smaller schools, even
Indiana with Fernando Mendoza and what they did with Curtis Rourke. Like,
experience is always gonna have an experience quarterback that's seen
a lot of football, no matter what the level is.
To your point about Division two, they're gonna have immediate
success versus a guy like Austin Simmons that, yeah, he
played against Georgia last year, had that sick drive, but
he's nineteen years old, Like it's gonna take him a
(46:41):
little developmental stuff to get to the level of Chambliss
LSU Wise, you saw LSU Brian Kelly break out about
after that Florida game they had five interceptions. The defense
has been outstanding with Blake Baker. You think you think
Brian Kelly this game with ole Miss, they can't their
rush if it's is horrible, Like the emphasis to run
(47:02):
the football. It feels like for Brian Kelly to just
get that monkey off his back. It's like, can we
run the football against ole Miss? Am I just gonna
get discussed about this the entire season, Like their offense
has been kind of questionable, and you wonder if a
game like this they can't get it going against Ole Miss,
if it's gonna go for the rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
Yeah, to me, if their offense can't get go, and
then they're not a national title contender. And I think
there if they were to lose this game, you would
start questioning, like are they are Like they could lose
other SEC games, you know that game against Bama would
be hard. You would just start saying that I wouldn't
trust them as much. What's crazy to me is lsu
It felt like Louisiana always had like dbs D linemen
(47:39):
running backs. How are they not just have some sweet
running back? Yeah, I don't. I don't get it. You
know what's it? Justice Haynes, the running back from Michigan.
That was the transfer from Bama. That's the other thing,
the transfer portal. You should be all over a guy
or two to be able to land just a serviceable like, yeah,
(47:59):
this guy's like a fifth round pick. I'm not even
talking like second round pick. But they can't run the ball.
Like that's a little concerning, which wouldn't you you're a
notre Dame guy. I mean it always hung his hat
on just running the ball down people's throats, a Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
Yeah, they got two guys where you're right. I mean
LSU went out on the portal for the first time.
They grabbed a bunch of dbs, grabbed a bunch of receivers.
And Durham is a good player, but it's almost like
the offensive line has issues more than even Durham. So
I mean, yeah, you could pass the ball you want,
but at the end of the day, like you said,
you got to established the run.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
Sabin said this forever when he transitioned over the last
like six years. Is as the game changed. Even if
you're the best defensive coach, and he clearly was, and
you have great defensive players, you need to score points.
In this modern day football, the way it's officiated, you
can't just crush people over the middle. Your players get
tossed out of games, so you can't intimidate as much physically.
(48:51):
You got it. And what do they do? What did
Alabama do under him? They got heavy, heavy on offense,
like emphasized it more than ever. And you know, obviously
LSU's offense a couple like if you put the Jay
Daniels offense with this defense, I would say they would
they would be the best team in the country. And
that's where Miami is. Like their defense is elite and
their offense looks good, but we don't see any like
(49:12):
the elite offenses also have the good defenses. Everything's been
a little off kilter, you would say the last couple
of years with like a complete team Ohio State found
at the end last year, Yeah, I agree, and that
they were also pretty rare, right, They had like this
really really experienced defense with all these like fourth and
fifth year guys that have been there forever, and then
(49:32):
the quarterback got hot and they had, you know, incredible
offensive skill guys. The last question, there's not a team
like that in the country. I would say that's like
as good top to bottom as Ohio State. Right, Ohio
State last year when they were playing well, is better
than any team this year. I would say, Yeah, I agree,
And that's what I think is great about this year.
It feels more wide open than last year, which is
(49:53):
kind of in good transition for the sixteen playoff. That's
gonna get hopefully figured out in the offseason, and then
that will probably go next year, which it's great. More football,
the academic calendar, the transferportal. I don't know how it's
gonna deal with.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
But the last question I got, last burning question, who,
in your mind is the best team in the country
right now after September, heading into Week five?
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Who do you think is the best team in college
football right now? From just a talent standpoint, you would
say the most complete team would probably be Miami. But
their coach, you know, of all these top guys, is
the biggest wild card. I mean, we can talk shit
about Brian Kelly or Kalin. I mean, those guys have
won a lot more big games than this guy. This
guy's blown a lot of them. And excellent recruiter. The
(50:38):
guy knows talent. Give him credit on hiring this defensive coordinator.
Their defense looks incredible. The Carson Becks thing, which I
thought was a joke. I mean, it's been a pretty
good move for him. You know, it's not like Mario's
cutting the check. Why does he care whether guy's making
a million or four million? Not his problem, But like,
do I trust that guy? Playoff game after playoff game
(50:59):
after playoff game. Let's say what you want. Like I
was down on Riot Day, but even going into the
playoffs last year, like he had won big games before,
right and Ben in a lot of big games, like
Mario feels like he's lost every one of his big
games up until this year. But they look pretty good
right now. They definitely look pretty good, and you know,
the ACC is not as hard, so they should be
(51:20):
a little i would say, fresher than whatever SEC team
or Big ten team that they face. They you know,
if they run the table or even go what twelve
and one, assuming they win the a SEC championship game,
they will get a bye. So and you got a
defensive line like it's just like Carson Beack, Mario Cristobal,
Like can you can you envision those guys on the
(51:43):
podium January or whatever holding the trophy. That'd be pretty quiet.
That'd be pretty nuts. Their odds are still high too.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
I think they're like plus fourteen hundred, So I think
the sportsbooks are still even a little hesitant even though
they look like the most complete team. In your point,
I think the one question mark to your point about
Mario cristoball and the coaching decisions. They haven't been on
the road this season. They go at Florida State next week,
So that's one of those games on the road. Tight
game back and forth comes out of the wire, like
how does Mario christ of ball? Does he make the
(52:09):
correct coaching decision than what he did? I guess Syracuse
last year when they probably should have went for it,
they kicked the field goal and they ended up not
getting the ball back for the rest of the game.
So those little things like that's the one question mark
I would have with Miami, but they look so complete,
Like wasn't Georgia Was it Georgia Tech last year where
they ran the ball, fumbled and then the dude drove
and scored the need he had. He had one of
(52:30):
those moments in Oregon too, he just had I guess
part of it's probably a little unfair how critical we are,
but he's had some historic last minute, like epic losses
like that are of all the top teams. No, James
Franklin has lost two good teams, but I don't remember
like legendary losses like Mario has multiple of them at
Oregon and obviously the one last year to Georgia Tech,
(52:51):
he literally could have just kneeled it and.
Speaker 1 (52:53):
Won the game. Runs it fumbles and then the dude
hits two passes and he loses. That was crazy. Now,
in fairness, it's not like their team is gonna win
Natty last year because their defense sucked and their defense
is clearly a lot better. And that's the one area
where you can just flip a switch, like Texas Tech
or Miami buy the right players, buy the right coach.
You can flip it way faster at the highest level
(53:14):
LSU this year, would you know, I mean they the
defensive coordinator was there last year too. But you know,
it's like you can just do it quicker than you
used to where it's like, oh, we gotta wait for
a couple of recruiting classes. It's like you wait one
spring and you're like off and running. People in the
comments are probably wondering, you know, why didn't you pick
Ohio State? Why didn't you pick Georgia.
Speaker 2 (53:31):
I think Ohio State you talked about where you're gonna
talk about it with Stucky that released on Friday.
Speaker 1 (53:35):
Ohio State at Washington that'll be kind of.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
A test with Julian saying going on the road, I
think Georgia probably is the most impressive win so far
at Tennessee the way they battled in.
Speaker 1 (53:44):
That football game.
Speaker 2 (53:45):
But what would you say, I guess to the people
that are like, well, Ohio State, why aren't they the
best team right now? Or Georgia or some other teams,
It's kind of like you can't really pinpoint who's the
best team right now, because, like you said, like now
we're starting to get into conference play this weekend, we're
gonna start to get answers, and then obviously in October
November starts to play out.
Speaker 1 (54:02):
Like it just feels so wide open this year. That's
what I think is cool. Like last year in basketball,
remember is like four one seeds made the Final four,
and for really most of the saban Era you kind
of knew by now like top three or four teams.
It does feel like, what the hell is the difference
between Bama, Georgia, LSU, and Ole Miss. If you told
(54:23):
me any one of those four were in the final four,
I wouldn't be stunned at all. Penn State, Oregon, Ohio State,
if you told me any of those teams were rolling
in the playoffs in the National Championship, would not be surprised.
I just listened seven teams. I don't even factored in,
like unlike last year. You know, it turns out Boise
and even ASU they weren't Like Texas Tech has way
(54:43):
more NFL guys, especially on defense than those two teams.
It's like, why couldn't Texas Tech just take down like
a Penn State in the second round, Like that's on
the table Florida State, Like you said, they play each other.
But if Florida State's good, I mean a couple of
years ago they went thirteen and oh or I guess
was yeah thirteen cause they won the conferencempionship and the
only reason they weren't in the champion or the final
four was the quarterback shattered his leg. But now looking back,
(55:06):
it's like, god, well the forty nine ers Ronardo Green,
Starter Fisk and diverse Keon Coleman, like that that team
was loaded with NFL guys to start on playoff teams,
some of the best teams in the NFL. So you
could argue it's like legitimate twelve deep and the team whatever,
the non power forwar team, Like what a waste of
a spot because that team's got no shot. It sucks.
(55:29):
It sucks. I love South Florida. Great win at Florida.
Speaker 2 (55:32):
But you got rolled against Miami and to your point,
like you even mentioned Indiana is better this year.
Speaker 1 (55:37):
What if Michigan gets in at ten and two?
Speaker 2 (55:39):
They look better with Bryce Underwood, with Shroll Moore, I
don't know how good of a coach.
Speaker 1 (55:42):
I think the Big Ten. I think the Big Ten
the last couple of years with the n IL like
watching we were talking about like Wreckers, Iowa is clearly better.
It's just deeper. You know that. The SEC used to
always say that, like, oh yeah, you guys got Ohio
State or Michigan if they're good, right, your top teams
are as good as ours, but like three through eight,
like it's way harder to play Ole miss right or
(56:05):
even a shitty floor to team like buckle Up. I
feel like the Big Ten is pretty good. I mean,
watching Rutgers is not bad, right, Iowa their offense, but
they are a tough team to play, like Minnesota is
gonna be solid. Obviously adding Washington and now the USC
is clearly better. I think the Big Tens the last
(56:25):
eighteen months is better than it has been in terms
of the aggregate the whole. That's Notre Dame. I mean,
I think if Notre Dame runs the table. They're clearly
I mean, they lost two teams that are probably gonna
go win a combine twenty twenty one games.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
I feel like they might have to join a conference
soon though, Well they're going to yeah, Big ten, Big
ten or SEC.
Speaker 1 (56:45):
Do you think it even matters?
Speaker 2 (56:46):
I know, the SEC the ACC are doing this, which
I like, the non conference game and them having I
don't know if it's gonna be the middle of the
season or beginning, but they're gonna have to play another conference.
Do you think it matters that which conference is better
in college football? Because I guess that's kind of a
way for the CFP. If you get an advantage in
terms of more teams, you get more money. It just
seems like every day we always talk back and forth
(57:08):
Big ten versus SEC, where I'm like, does it really
does it really matter or it's just kind of bragging rights.
Speaker 1 (57:12):
I guess, well, I think the current way it does
with the twelve teams, perception matters a lot. So it's
like the ACC and the Big twelve, especially the perception
that their conference isn't as good, like, oh, there's getting
one team. It's kind of like universally accepted the ACC
Like it would take Florida and Miami, Florida State and
Miami basically being they can only lose to each other
(57:34):
and then win every other game and then the other
team would have to beat that team in the conference
championship game. But we don't talk about that, like with
the Big Ten, even Indiana once they beat ill tonoi'say oh,
maybe Indiana's real again. So I think that and they
both those conferences have earned it. But I do think
the perception really really matters and it's correct, Like I
do believe the Big Ten and the SEC are better
(57:55):
than the other two, Like the Big twelve is clearly
to me, like Texas Tech is probably pretty good. We'll
see TCUASU, but there is a drop off, like when
I watch Colorado, Like how many games would Colorado win
if you put them in the Big ten or the SEC?
Like I don't think they would go to bowl games
and who knows. We'll see what their final record is
(58:16):
this year. I mean they might be struggling to get
six to seven wins, but like that's where the middle
tier team, Like let's say Colorado wins six seven games,
Like are they going six or seven games and they're
playing the SEC. No shot, And that's I'm just I'm
not picking on Dion. You could use I could use
ASU the same thing. If I put this ASU team
in the SEC or the Big ten, like they might
(58:37):
go ten and two or nine to three this year?
Well they I saw him lose Tossissippi State on the road, right,
So what would happen when they like what would they
do against Florida's defense? Who's you know, who knows Florida
might tap out here in a week or two because
their coach gets fired. But like, would you say if
ASU had to go on the road to Florida this year,
like they would score many points against that defense? Probably not?
(58:58):
That's that's no shot at ASU. I mean Florida's but
that's the SEC. It's like I bet if I texted
the NFL buddy, like how many NFL guys does Florida
have on defense? He'd be like that are upper classmen
or lower classmen? Because probably ten out of eleven guys
when you factor in like when they're eligible, right, And
that you can't say that about That's what you can't
say about the Big twelve or the ACC. But I
actually think the ACC. If Cows, I don't know, think
(59:20):
he just los stan Aego State's probably a little better.
So I would rank the ACC slightly above the Big Twelve.
And maybe I'm just giving more credit to like Miami
Florida State. I mean, Georgia Tech clearly pretty good. Yeah,
I think the Big Twelve.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
I think it's good for college football that we have
one conference that's got a bunch of teams that's competitive.
Speaker 1 (59:39):
You got eight teams deep. Like you talk TC Arizona State,
it's a fun team, it's a fun conference a watch. Yeah,
But if you're the commissioner and he's been super outspoken
that they want to get multiple teams in the playoff,
you're gonna have to hope that Arizona State is somehow,
some way not the booster of the level of Texas Tech.
But you gotta hope that Arizona State somehow gets a
lot of money. You gotta hope that maybe I don't
(01:00:00):
another Texas team in the Big twelve, or maybe Colorado
starts to get more money. You gotta hope some of
those powerhouses in the Big Twelve start to get more
money where you can get more bids in the collegeball playoff,
Like that's the only way that the Big Twelve can,
you know, survive to the level of the Big ten
of the SEC. But man, it's this weekend is going
to be insane. Like if you have a wedding this weekend,
(01:00:21):
the Ryder Cup, you got all these collegeball games, get
the NFL. I'm sorry, I don't think I could go
to a game. I don't think I could schedule a
wedding in the falling. You had your wedding in the spring.
Can you imagine going to a wedding right now? I don't,
no shot, no chance. Well I don't. I haven't been
to a fall wedding my entire life. I actually went
to one college buddy, and I left. I think like
Sunday morning at like five am. I left the wedding
(01:00:43):
before like the party even got it going. I'm like,
I got to get home and go to bed so
I can catch my flight. So I'm with you. I
do think the Big Twelve if TCU wins this game
and runs the table and you get TCU playing an
undefeated Texas Tech and whoever, I do think they could
possibly get two teams because Sunny Dyke's has proven that,
like he runs a real program, and obviously Texas Tech
is clearly legit. That would be their path, Like, you
(01:01:04):
can't lose Thessissippi State and issues done unless they get
the automatic bid by winning, you know, run the table
and then win the conference championship game. But like, once
you lose Tosissippi State, like your margin you have, no
You're done unless you control your own destiny. Because last
year the Big Twelve had like a bunch of teams
with two or three losses. It seems like this year.
Speaker 2 (01:01:23):
With Texas Tech, they have a bunch of unranked opponents.
I think they gotta go. They're not in Arizona State,
which I guess could be kind of a challenging gay
for Texas Tech. But the way their defensive line looked
against Utah, which is supposed to be the best offensive
line in the country, let alone the Big Twelve, Like,
I feel like they're just gonna bully Arizona State in
that game too.
Speaker 1 (01:01:39):
You're right, I feel like TCU beats Arizona State this week.
I love Hoover.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
It stinks because I'm kind of an Arizona State obviously
growing up here, and it's been cool to see Arizona
State kind of take that next step, and the valley
kind of rally around a college football team where it's
more pro dominant. Even the pro fan bases aren't even
as loyal as what you see in Philly and Boston
and San Francisco or wherever too. But TCU as a
road dog, yeah, I agree.
Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
I think I would lead in TCU.
Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
That offense is just so explosive with Sonny Dike's I mean,
you saw rid of UNC and SMU.
Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
But it's gonna be a fun game.
Speaker 2 (01:02:09):
My last thing, I gotta put this in real quick
because I'm a fan of the show. Obviously I watched
John Middlecoff three and out subscribe. What do you think
about Will Compton's bald head? Well, you got any advice
for Will Compton because I saw he been tweeting about
you know, what should I lotion my head? Obviously I'm
not bald. I got some good hair myself, thank God
for my mom. But I was just curious because you
haven't really talked about Will Compton gaining another bald brother.
Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
Well, you know he won't be bald long, right. He's
had to do it because he lost the bet, which
you know I get he's loyal to Nebraska, but Nebraska
doesn't be decent teams, let alone good ones. I can't
speak to guys with hair shaving their head. They have
a lot more follicles on top, but the key. You
gotta moisturize it like you would your face. So you
wash your head like you wash your face, right, you
(01:02:56):
just you know, like a normal human being if you're
going to bed and you don't need to shower or whatever,
and you just wash your face before you go sleep.
You have to wash your whole head like it's it's
all one. It's like the beer just extends and then
you have to moisturize so it's not dry. Then you
get in grown hairs. Uh, you know that first cut,
because he's never shaved, it had to be just pretty
special how close it was, you know, when you're like me,
(01:03:19):
any shave. You know, I don't shave as much because
I'm just a podcaster. But if I had a real
job and was going into work and seeing people, I'd
be shaving like every eighteen you know, every day and
a half or whatever. He had to get the closer
shaved humanly possible, so it has to feel incredible. You
just gotta hydrate because your skin can get dry really fast.
And then you got problems. Do you use bar soap?
(01:03:40):
I don't s if he uses a bar of soap, No,
I don't use bar soap. But he's fucking twenty twenty
five bar soap bar soap criminal. I just thought there
was a universal ball thing. Are you in jail like?
I mean you got a million options? No, I don't
use bar soap. I don't use bar soap in general.
I mean I'm a grown up with you know, use
a pump bottle of like a normal body wash with
(01:04:01):
a loofa. This isn't This isn't like my dad in
like nineteen eighty three. I mean we got we got
options here if you use a bar soap. If you're
a bar soap guy, are you a bar soap guy?
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
I mean I use it on my occasional Yeah, I
got body wash right now.
Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
But already you have a you have a loofa bars
you know you just I got the loofah? Yeah, yeah,
what could justify in twenty twenty five using a bar
soap and not like a body wash with the loofah,
it's easier to use.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
Well, I heard SVP use it. So I just thought
it was a universal bald guy thing. Maybe he's kind
of an older, old fashioned and.
Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
He's a little older, and you think, can uh bar
soap to me? Would just my whole face would would dry,
it would fall off, so I couldn't. I haven't used
a bar soap beside at a hotel, and even typically
I bring like little like body wash with me. That's
that's a little hack. So you just use shampoo. No,
(01:04:52):
I haven't used shampoo since I've been bald. Save money.
You don't you sham't you don't use shampoo. You know,
there's what would I need shampoo for my chest? Hair? Don't?
There's no hair no, you know because part of shampoos
to keep your hairs soft, right, Yeah, yeah, isn't that
I mean and dandre or whatever. The conditioner. Yeah, conditioner
(01:05:13):
keeps your hair out. Those aren't problems that I get.
So it's just just face wash and body wash. No,
no shampoo. You wear something new every day. That's awesome. Okay, Audios, Jackson,
good talk, see you. Okay. I want to do a
(01:05:39):
little mail bag because I got so many questions at
John Middlecoff my Instagram firing those dms questions answered here
on the show. I'm gonna try to go quick because
we got a decent amount of questions, So just my
name firing those dms wide open. We'll start with Miles.
Given all the game swing field goals we've seen this
year and the randomness associated with end results, I was
(01:05:59):
wondering if you think the NFL would ever make a
rule change to eliminate the kickers. I know a lot
of head coaches and fans hate that these non football
players sometime decide games. So it got me thinking, what
if they turn the red zone into the score zone.
No more field goal attempts, but instead teams need to
get inside the red zone to automatically qualify for three.
(01:06:21):
Similar to baseball, if a team wants to take three
points when they cross the opponent's twenty yard line, the
coach can signal three to the ref where this can
get interesting as the end of games. Uh. Basically, not
only that, if a team gets to say the nineteen
yard line with a with a minute left to go
(01:06:41):
down two, the other team has a has a couple timeouts,
they wouldn't be able to take knees and kick field goals.
I think it would require a lot more strategy. I
think it's a little more complicated than the way you said.
Once they get into the quote unquote score zone, and
I know I get automatically three. Couldn't I just run
out the clock. I could still take knees. You'd have
(01:07:02):
to call timeouts. What would be the difference? And I
know I'd get the three. I think the problem the
volatility of football, And this is why people hate the
push pushes, because there's no we know what's gonna happen.
They're gonna get a yard or two is I can
stop you. We just saw in the Ravens game, like
I can get a goal line stand, I can cause
(01:07:22):
a turnover, you can miss a field goal, like we
don't know what's gonna happen. When the Rams lined up
for that field goal, I thought the Eagles were gonna
lose the game. Like that's a same thing with the
Packer game when they blocked it. You just you just
never know. And I know some field goals are longer
than others. And you're talking about you know a nineteen
yard field goal is twenty nine is like thirty five yards, right,
(01:07:45):
the actual when you factor in the ten yards for
the goal line, and then whatever six or seven for
where they line up, So usually add fifteen plus yards
to you know it's a twenty yard If you're at
the twenty yard line, I view it as thirty five
yard field goal. Could be off yard depending on you
know exactly how you line up, but that's usually you
know the standard. But I just think that's never happening,
(01:08:07):
or at least for the foreseeable feet. I would never
say never. Okay, let's get into Jake. I'm here in
the great state of Alaska. Never been, but know some
people that have, and I'm very fascinated to go. I
would love to watch the animals play little golf, maybe
go on like an Elk hunt of the six teams.
Not that I've ever been on an no count, but
(01:08:28):
if I was going to go on one, Alaska sounds
like the place. There are currently six teams in are
zero and three. Who is truly the quote unquote worst
team in the league and who do you think still
is a shot of not finishing the season with a
losing record. I personally would rank them like this, the Titans,
the Saints, the Jets, the Dolphins, the Texans, the Giants. Ps.
(01:08:49):
There's still room to join the anti Monday Night doubleheader club.
By the way, next Monday Night two games overlap. Yeah,
but if you check and google the games, it is
Miami against the Jets, kind of like the Jets money
line in that game, and the Broncos against Jake Browning.
So that sucks. And I'm not one thing I'm gonna try,
(01:09:10):
very very make a conscious effort to do is not
be negative. I'm just in general in life, but specifically
like complaining about football games. It's so stupid. But we
all agree Jets Dolphins is not a great Monday night game.
But if you were gonna have Jets Dolphins on Monday Night,
at least have the other game. So if one of
the two games is close, it's not the worst thing
(01:09:31):
in the world. I would say currently, I would agree
the Titans. I would say the Saints are better than
the Jets. I think the Saints are better than the
Jets and the Dolphins because I do think their offense
is not bad. I would take the Saints over those
two teams. So I would go Titans, Dolphins, Jets, Saints, Texans, Giants,
(01:09:57):
potentially Giants Texans depending on how Dak or not Dak,
but Dart looks. I don't hate it. I think the
Texans and Giants. I think the Giants would have the
best capability of like looking up and their competitive and
their seven eight wins. I think the Texans are in
some trouble now. They do play the Titans this week.
If they were to lose that game, they are screwed.
(01:10:21):
A fan from Canada, my question is, why do you
constantly refer to Jim tom Sula as one of the
worst coaches of all time. I get he wasn't good,
but I think guys like Urban Meyer, Nathaniel Hackett, and
Bobby Petrino were way worse. I'm curious because the forty
nine ers had him as an assistant for eight plus
years in house. When someone works in the same company
(01:10:42):
for several years usually means he's relatively well aliked. Well,
there's no disputing he was well liked and he was
an excellent defensive line coach. Jim tom Sulla was a
highly respected position coach, very highly respected position coach. But
when he got the job, it'd be like going from
a high level CEO to guy. It's not even middle management.
(01:11:02):
I mean, Jim tom Sula is a position coach, that's it.
So yeah, his record is not the worst of all time.
He will you know, Chip Kelly, who came after him,
who's probably much more suited to be a head coach,
had a worse record than Jim tom It's one of
those things just had to be there. So this is
more on personal experience. Like Urban Meyer was objectively a
(01:11:25):
worst coach. He did not make it through the season.
Nathaniel Hackett did not make it through one season. Josh
McDaniels has had two head coaching jobs and been fired
midway through year two in both. So I just used
Jim tom Sula as a reference point magally because I
was there, Like, I don't think if you weren't living
and doing what I was doing for a living covering football,
(01:11:47):
talking about football, you probably would bring up other people,
but I would put Jim to And it's no shade
like Jim tom Sula, by all accounts a nice guy,
though rumors back then that he backstabbed Jim Harbaugh and Fangio.
But again it's more of a like personal preference, right,
Like if we all ate at the same restaurants, we
(01:12:08):
would be like, oh, these three there would be a
lot of agreement of like, these are the best restaurants
in America, right, and this would be like that's the
worst sandwich I've ever had. But we all live in
different places, we all have different tastes, and we're all
over the bard, right. It's no different with football if
you are a Giants fan or a Jags fan, or
whoever fan. Like, if I went to a Giants fan like,
(01:12:30):
who's the worst coach You've ever seen? Their first reaction
probably be like Joe Judge, right, and I what could
I argue with him? I mean he called a quarterback
sneak from their own nine yard line. I mean so,
I think it's all personal experience. When we bring up
making fun of coaches, it's like, who's the worst quarterback
(01:12:51):
you've ever seen? Well, if you went different areas of
the country, everyone would probably have a different example. Steeler fan,
I've always wonder why the Ravens franchise isn't looked at
an all times as an all time franchise. They are
technically the same franchise that had Jim Brown and won
a ton of championships. See, I'm gonna stop you before
you even get to your question when you move, right,
(01:13:14):
when you exist somewhere, move, go away, and then come back,
you don't have the same history as just like the
New York Yankees or the Dallas Cowboys or the Alabama
Crimson Tide or it's just universal, right. It's like what
Bill Simmons always argues with the Lakers. It's like, how
do you claim the Minnesota titles? And I kind of
agree there you could keep the same name, but when
(01:13:37):
you played in different cities, like they're separate operations. This
is way before my time. But the you know, they
used to call them the New York Football Giants because
the San Franco Giants came from New York. Or the
Brooklyn Dodgers, but like when you compare the Brooklyn history
to the LA history, like I have a hard time
doing that. So I hear what you're saying about these franchise,
(01:14:00):
But when you move and you become a different franchise,
like I just think we don't see it as much
anymore because it rarely happens, like the Raiders, for example,
whatever happens in Vegas, especially once the Davis family no
longer owns the team, it's gonna be hard for the
(01:14:20):
Raiders in Vegas to like when they start bretting now
theirs is weird because they haven't had much success lately.
But like talk about like Jim Plunkett, Like Jim Plunkett
did that in La Right. I just think it's very difficult,
you know, talking about the Chicago fans can take a
lot of pride in like the eighty five Bears. George
(01:14:41):
hallis building our team back in the fifties. Right. If
you're a Packer fan, even if you're younger than me,
and you go freaking Vince Lombardi coach the Green Bay Packers,
you can say it's part of the same history, right,
It's like the same family line. I think when you
start moving around cities it becomes really complicated. But I
think it's actually a huge reflection of how successful Baltimore
(01:15:04):
has been since moving there. What year was at they
move in ninety five ninety six. I was listening to
your thoughts on Brian Thomas Junior and his struggles this year,
and I think I disagree a bit. I think the
problem is that he really didn't start breaking out until
later in the season when he was playing with mccorkel.
(01:15:28):
That'd be Mac Jones. I said mccorkeyl. He said Mac Jones.
I just love that his real name is mccorkyl. I
don't think he has a very good connection with Trevor Lawrence,
and it'll be interesting to see how the rest of
the season goes. Keep up the great work. My theory
was that he kind of lost a little confidence when
they drafted Travis Hunter and it kind of took the
wind out of his star. So again, that was just
(01:15:50):
a completely uneducated theory. I didn't claim to be right
on that one. You're probably right. Yeah, I don't have
a great answer for you there, but there's no disputing like,
he's a really talented player. And sometimes guys just don't
have a good connection. I mean, I don't think we
talk about that enough. Sometimes you're just so good like
(01:16:12):
Mahomes and Peaked, Tyreek Hill right or Josh Allen And
I mean, I guess who's the best receiver he played
with Diggs, you know, Lamar and the tight ends right,
Burrow and Chase. But sometimes it's like, yeah, we just
it's just our cohesions off. It just doesn't work. We
see that sometimes, like free agent wide receivers see that
in baseball with pitchers. Some pitchers have a specific catcher
(01:16:34):
for them, probably pretty rare. I don't fall baseball as
close as they used to, but used to be more
like Tim Wakefield had a specific catcher, which made sense
because he threw a knuckleble. I hear Colin suggests that
Burrow should try to get out of Cincinnati while the
Bengals are cheap. I feel like they've done everything Burrow
has wanted since he got there. They drafted Chase, they
(01:16:54):
paid him, they paid Chase Ann Higgins, they brought back
Trey Hendrickson. It'd be much hard to field a better
D and O line with the money they have tied
up in Burrow, Chase, and Higgins. I agree. How could
Burrow be the one getting screwed. I don't think he's
totally getting screwed, and I've said over and over even
if he feels that way, Mike Brown is not going
to care for the foreseeable future, because not only am
(01:17:17):
I paying you a premium, I've paid these two wide receivers.
Now every single person would have paid Jamar Chase. Jamar
Chase is a guy that every franchise in America pace.
I do think the t Higgins thing was, you know,
how fundamentally do you want to build your team? And
that feels like pure pressure for the quarterback, where I
just like, I can find another t Higgins, even if
(01:17:38):
he's not quite as good. But if I use a
second or third rounder and a wide receiver and then
I use this money and allocate the resources of other places,
isn't that part of paying Joe Burrow to make guys
look good to go along with Jamar Chase. Maybe we
draft one of these sweet running backs. I don't know,
but I totally in agreement there. We could argue like
is this the right move? There's a reason the GMS
(01:18:01):
GM and quarterbacks quarterback Belichick didn't ever listen to Tom Brady,
and it resulted in nine Super Bowl appearances in six victories.
If you would have listen to Tom, they would have
it would have been completely different. Right, So there's a reason.
You know, in business, the old adage and Colin's been
saying this is like take the emotion out of it
(01:18:23):
when you're too emotionally tied to a business deal. Whatever
that may be, right, whether it be a big business deal,
whether it be a car purchase, whether it be arguing
over a salary, whatever it is. The more emotionally you
get connected, the harder it is for clarity, and the
easier it is to make a mistake. Well, how could
a player not be emotionally tight. He's in the locker
(01:18:45):
room there as friends, and there's somewhat of a buffer
when you're the GM, even more than the coach, that
you can be unemotional about the player, even if in
this modern day NFL, the GM's definitely I don't know,
I want to say the word tight, but I think
in a lot of franchise you know, definitely with their
star players and their high end guys, the GMS, they
(01:19:06):
have very good relationships, right. I mean, you hear a
lot of these players now and name the GM constantly, right.
Obviously the best examples the Chiefs with Mahomes and Patrick
I guess Patrick Mahomes is the same guy Kelsey. They
talk about Veitch a lot, but it's no different than
the Eagles with Howie Like he knows his players really well,
(01:19:29):
but he also can be cut throat when he needs to.
And as a player, you don't want to lose any
of your friends. They are good players, but that's not
the way the business works. Do you think the Vikings
(01:19:53):
are regretting not signing Sam Darnold. JJ McCarthy has hurt
again and did not leave me impressed over the two games.
I think the Vikings made a mistake. I realized Sam
didn't played well, didn't play well last game of the
season in the playoff game. I think the gms sometimes
don't realize the benefit of having someone play every year
(01:20:14):
over every play year over year. For them, Sam knew
the system they would have been able to build on
the last year. Baker is a great example of this.
He's a good first season with the Bucks, but seems
to have gotten better progressively each of the next couple
of years. Yeah, I mean, I think, listen, the difference
(01:20:35):
of the Baker situation is once they pulled the trigger
on JJ. While I agree you're gonna have a short
lease with JJ's not getting four years to be injured
in and out of the lineup like he's getting a
couple he better get back on the field and be
good or this is gonna be short lived. But after
year one they were in a tough position, and I
think it's easy to say that now. Now you could
(01:20:56):
also say, like who cares use the pick on him.
He could be the backup quarterback. It was pretty risky
that there's no doubt about it. But their team wouldn't
look the same today that they allocated all those resources
on buying players if they had kept Sam. Now you
could argue, well, the team they had last year won
fourteen games. So I think, I here's what I know.
(01:21:18):
The chances that JJ McCarthy is ever as good as
Sam was last year or is currently even if Sam
doesn't improve, which naturally, like you said about Baker, guys
just kind of do once they prove they're kind of good,
is slim to none. Like it would be a huge
upset if JJ McCarthy is as good as those guys
right to be ever as good as Kirk Cousins or like,
(01:21:40):
it doesn't feel likely. On top of he can't stay
on the field, so I think if he's in and
out of lineup this year, they might regret it. But
at the time I understood where they were coming from.
I do. I mean, because part of drafting JJ McCarthy
really high is like you believed in it, but also
sometimes with it draft pick when you haven't seen him play,
(01:22:03):
it's essentially like buying a stock. You can have the
conviction you can have got in on ten dollars. You're like,
I'm telling you, I think there's a chance this thing
goes to fifty or one hundred. But then after a
year or two, if that ten dollars stock is at
seven dollars, like you gotta contemplate selling it now. Sometimes
if you sell it at seven dollars and take your
thirty percent haircut over the next couple of years, like
(01:22:26):
Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield or now Daniel Jones, that
thing goes to fifty dollars and it kicks you in
the nuts. A lot of times it does not, though,
so I think the Vikings are monitoring the situation closely.
I would say they're not full regret yet. But if
Sam leads Sea outle of the playoffs and JJ McCarthy
becomes a I don't know, just hurt all the time,
(01:22:50):
let alone not good player, you could be correct. You
talking about someone's question of Russell playing himself out of
the Hall of Fame really grind my years about how
football hall of fame is being diluted in the baseball
to that of the baseball and basketball. Once My personal
criteria for the Hall of Fame should be this, you
(01:23:11):
need to either have changed the way the position gets played,
or if we're writing the anthology of football, if your
name has to be included, then you belong in the
Hall of Fame. The idea of my childhood hero Darrell
Reeves sharing the Hall of Fame title with Russell Wilson
is just disappointing. You could argue, like Revis is one
(01:23:32):
of the best players ever at his position in and
on defense, Russell is not one of the greatest quarterbacks
of all time. But you could argue telling the story
of football in the Internet age, he played a pivotal role,
Like he helped one of the best teams in the league
get to a couple of Super Bowls, win a Super Bowl,
become a Pro bowler as a mid round pick, kind
(01:23:53):
of change football. As a short player, think of the
floodgates that opened a little guy being drafted high. You
go back to when I was a kid in the nineties,
none of these guys would have been drafted I Baker Mayfield,
no Kyler Murray, no chance. Not saying that they might
not have deserved it, but they would not have been
because you didn't draft players high, they were short, so
(01:24:16):
I think Russell Wilson kind of opened that opportunity. I mean,
Bryce Young, it's like five ten a buck fifty. I'd
make the argument you could write the story without Russell
because you could just talk about Pete in the defense.
But he played a pretty pivotal role there, so I
might make the argument, I'm coming around on Russell. If
(01:24:36):
you put them in the Hall of Fame, there's worse
guys in there. Is it fair to say that this
year has played out to the top NFC teams Eagles, Packers, Rams,
Lions looks stronger than the AFC Bill's Ravens, Chargers, Chiefs.
I would say right now, the NFC looks pretty strong, right,
(01:24:57):
even if their teams have weird games, like the Eagles
have kind of scuffled on offense. I see Drew Brees,
he took a giant dump on the Eagles offense saying
he hates watching it, which I don't disagree. When they're
playing bad, but when they're right, they're fun out. I
mean it's fun to watch Saquon Barkley bus fifty yard runs.
AJ and DeVante make big plays when they're playing well,
(01:25:17):
they're fun offense to watch, but I would tend to agree.
I would tend to agree. I think I think the
NFC's teams are more complete for sure. I mean, I
just don't think the Bills are that good on defense.
Ravens offense has major question marks. Same with the Chiefs.
You know the Chargers. Do they have the high end
talent to like win the Super Bowl? You know, Denver's
(01:25:40):
clearly got some issues bo Nicks. I saw someone do
a statistical breakdown and kind of a tape breakdown, like
he is missing too many layups and on the big
plays he's overthrowing them. So like part of being an
elite team is like you need that guy to play better.
So yeah, I think there are a lot of question
marks with the AFC the Colts. Like Colts gonna rattle
(01:26:00):
off playoff victories. I don't know, doubtful college football question.
I'm a diehard Wisconsin fan. Are we dead? Luke Fickle
was a huge swing and it's blowing up in front
of our faces. I heard your comments on Gunday Gundy
at Oklahoma State, and now I fear that Wisconsin is
(01:26:21):
going to be left behind. To listen in any industry change. Right,
in any pivotal switch or just direction for an industry,
they are gonna be big winners and they're gonna be losers.
(01:26:41):
And some of those big winners have already been winning, right,
So NIL like Ohio State awesome, Oregon sweet, sign me
up Texas right, I'm in Georgia cool. And some of
these other teams like damn, Texas Tech is now in
the mix, like no, Texas Tech is a real player,
(01:27:02):
right Miami, like, hey, we got big money, We're back.
So it clearly brings some got people back and the winners,
say the winners, but also there are going to be
some losers. And I actually think, you know, I probably
said this over the last couple of weeks. I think
one of the big winners of NIL is the Big
ten as a whole. Right, I feel their conference is
(01:27:24):
I told this to Jackson. It feels better or feels
deeper than it has been. I think NIL plays a role,
but I don't know. I mean, Maryland Rutgers look credible.
I wouldn't say you're UCLA bad, but it clearly has
not gone well. And you know that picture Slash video
(01:27:49):
when viral was the ad sitting with McCarthy, which in
theory shouldn't be that weird. McCarthy lived in you know,
Green Bay for fifteen years. He's anonymous with that area,
probably has a place, good friends. But it's like, well,
Fickle's gonna get fired. They're channing fire fickle. Mike McCarthy's
(01:28:09):
probably not gonna get an NFL job. Would he be
interested in that? I mean, what if they pay him
six seven million dollars? Question is can you win there?
And nil? To me is the number one question? Right,
you can be you can give me a large you know,
a couple million dollars from my offensive and defensive coordinator. Great,
But I'm in a conference with Ohio State, which I
(01:28:32):
would say, when you factor in everything, is the best
program in the country. Michigan is not gonna go quietly,
even as they kind of ebb you know, little Downturn
post Harbaugh, but they're gonna spend huge money. Oregon and
Penn State are just humming, right. They recruit at a
high level, they have money, They're producing dudes. USC is
(01:28:53):
gonna start storming back because of the money. Who am
I missing? I'm missing? You know? Washington is gonna be
solid like they got money and they care about football.
And they have really been good beside the one Jimmy
Lake season since Chris Peterson got there, Like that program
has just been a solid. It's kind of been like
(01:29:14):
the West Coast version of like Iowa maybe a little
bit better. And I think it's hard. So you can't
have every team in the conference can't be good like
part of the SEC. How did the Lane get good? Well,
look at some programs. Felt Florida fell off the cliff.
Florida has not been good. Mississippi State sucks. Missippi State
(01:29:35):
ten years ago, like Dan Mull and Dak Prescott, they
were good. So programs, like some people in your conference,
if you're gonna win nine ten games, have to go
the other way. And I don't know, I would bet
against it. Look at Nebraska right like I grew up
in Nebraska was like an NFL team and now they
(01:29:55):
feel like they're trying, but it's never gonna be the same.
It just and that's no shade. I would love to
root for Nebraska. I appreciate the brand, but I don't know. Okay,
couple more is Shane Waldron the worst pass game coordinator
(01:30:15):
in league history? As soon as he leaves the Rams
Cup goes for the Triple Crown. Then after he leaves
the Seahawks JSN Monster breakout. Last season as the Bears
pass game coordinator, Rome looked like a bust. Now he's gone,
Rome is looking like one of the top receivers in
the league. He's with the Jags and making BTJ look
(01:30:38):
like a fringe wide receiver three something or nothing. I
don't know, I'd have to text around. I mean, clearly
you would say his resume is not great, and I
think some guys just get in this. You know, if
you work at the right place, right, if you go
to the right place. I've said one thing I'd benefit
(01:30:59):
from is the organization I was with had a lot
of people that knew what they were doing and have
gone on to have a lot of success personnel people
and coaches. So when I have questions, when I have thoughts,
like I can go to high level people right Eagles
winning Super Bowls, Chiefs winning Super Bowls, Like I could
text people in these organizations and get their opinions that
(01:31:21):
are part of the best teams in the league, that
have the best players in the league. But if I
had been offered a job with the Arizona Cardinals at
the time, or the Miami Dolphins or whoever, just some
bad organization. I would have taken that job. I only
went to the Eagles because that was my best opportunity.
It was my only opportunity. Coach Hill got on the
(01:31:42):
phone with Andy Reid, Howie Roseman interviewed me. I got
the gig, right, it just happened to be that. You know,
Veach and Lewis Riddick and Sean McDermott and all these
guys were there. And you look at Shane Waldron, he
got in with the Rams. So it's like Sean McVay,
he knows Liam Cohen because Liam Cohen was there, and
(01:32:02):
he gets the hype of McVeigh. But it's just he
was just there. So just is he a good coach
just because he was hired by Sean McVay. Right, there's
no saying that I would have been a good GM
just because Andy Reid hired me. Hell, look at me
turned into a podcaster. I'm glad I did. But just
because you work for someone doesn't mean you're them. I
(01:32:24):
kind of realized why I never even thought about getting
back and once my career this way, I was like,
I'm not Howie Roseman first of or each like I knew,
I don't like I don't like football as much as
those guys, and listen, football is my life. The football
to them is crack and their addicts. Same thing with
the coaches, Andy, Sean McDermott, all these guys. So I
(01:32:47):
just think, yeah, I mean you could you can get
by on resume in football base on. Oh, I worked
for Jim Harbaugh. Okay, well that was a long time ago.
What have you done since? Well I'm not and it
has a gun. Well, people don't talk, but it's like
you can parlay that for a while. Okay, last question,
(01:33:10):
why do you think touchdowns and yards by quarterbacks are down?
Despite the rule changes in the extra game? Pat through
fifty in his first year, Brady had forty three a
second year, and others head close to forty. Now thirty
six ish is considered a great year. I think what
Sam Darnold to throw a thirty five or thirty six
(01:33:30):
last year and it was incredible. You have to get,
like I think you'd have to get like a defensive
coaching roundtable and offensive coaches to kind of get truly
their thoughts on This one consistent theme I see when
listening to coaches press conferences is a lot of these
teams now. And this is why I think the running
back has come back is playing a much more conservative shell,
(01:33:54):
like we're not gonna just give you big plays. We
will let you dump into the running back. Running Backs
a lot of success now in the passing game. And
obviously running backs are coming back from running the ball
because what happens with a defensive backfield and linebackers cheating
back right, you can run it on them right. It's
like you used to go, Peyton Manning, you had a
corner as your nickel corner that couldn't tackle. He would
(01:34:17):
call runs to them all day long. So you just
take strengths first, their weaknesses and you go. And it's like,
you're just gonna give me a free five six yards.
And if I got a good player, always to do
is break one tackle or make a guy miss. It's
a twenty yard game. So I think a lot. I
think there's probably several several variables, but I think one
big thing is the conservative nature of defenses throughout a game.
(01:34:41):
You know, it used to be there'd be a lot
more crazy aggressive teams you know, wink. Martin Dale kind
of felt like a dying breed of just I'm gonna blitz,
I'm gonna play man now. I also think this DBS
as a whole are probably a little faster, so this
speed of and safeties as well, when I you know
(01:35:06):
people that I grew up watching, like Tim McDonald at
Water and then meeting guys when I worked in the league,
like safeties like Lewis Riddick was a safety in the NFL,
Todd Bowles was a safety in the eighties. Safeties from
the eighties and nineties look like linebackers. These guys are
six to two. When they played, they were like two
hundred and fifteen pounds. Guys now are not as big.
(01:35:28):
It's much more because back then you went over the middle.
Those guys would give I mean, they were giving concussions
out like they give out orange slices at a kid
soccer game. I mean they would. You meet some of
these former safeties, John Lynch. I remember the first time
I met John Lynch when he was working with the Niners,
and you know, I'm like five ten, I'm not that big.
He towered over him. John Lynch is huge. You go
(01:35:51):
to practice though, like the safeties don't look like him.
He's bigger than all the safeties at practice. And if
we went around the league, it's Kyle Hamilton is an outlier.
Back in the day, Kyle Hamilton's were everywhere. Cam Chancellor's
that body type, it does not exist. They're all smaller.
So when you're smaller, you're faster in theory. But I
(01:36:12):
mean so, I think team speed on defense doesn't mean
they're good dbs just means are faster so I can
chase you better. Where you have more explosive plays when
you have the bigger safeties because if they took a
wrong angle, they couldn't run with the wide receivers, it
does feel like there's a lot more team speed with
the back four and even the linebackers. Like think about
(01:36:33):
the linebackers now, they are not You watch that Cowboys
doc of the Jimmy Johnson Jerry Jones nineties Cowboys. Ken
Norton Junior is like a two hundred and fifty five
pound run stuffing linebacker when he went to the forty
nine ers, him and Gary Plummer, those guys like they
don't exist. No one plays like the best linebackers like
(01:36:56):
Fred Warner Rokwan or like hybrid guys. It would have
been much harder for them to hold up back in
like the eighties against these run heavy teams that just
leaned on you. Well, people don't lean on you anymore.
They spread the ball out and throw. So I think
it's a philosophical and just size change. I just think
(01:37:18):
they've adapted in human beings that play those positions, and
the schemes are much more conservative that make it more difficult.
That's why I think we've seen these running backs kind
of have a little resurgence. For sure, the volume
