Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
All Right, Friday is a fisher lye here. We got
a good week of shows. Let's just crush the whole week,
all right, live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever
you may be, however you may be listening. Thanks for
making us part of your damn Rolling up my sleeves.
It's a work dat he's rolling the sleeves up, folks.

(00:51):
Strap in. I'm like a farmer with a microphoat hoe
the fields all day. That's all we do here. I'll
early feeding the cows. He did milk cows anymore. They
got machines for that. In my family's heritage, that's what
we do. Go look up cowherd in the old country,
my friend. So we should all root for all these

(01:15):
quarterbacks to succeed. All these rookie quarterbacks. There's nothing worse
than the one o'clock window and watching Bryce Young struggling.
It's just turn it off. So Drake May's the one
we worry about this year of all the rookie quarterbacks.
First round, that's what we worried about. His comp was
Justin Herbert, which is not a terrible comp. That's what
I was told by two NFL execs. He's got a
little Justin Herbert, but he's not as polished as Justin

(01:37):
Herbert was coming out of college. But the size, the arm,
he's sturdy, he moves well. Last night he's pretty good.
He's pretty good. Drake made pretty good and that's good
for all of us. He made a couple of throws
last night. I gotta be honest, and I was like, okay,
I get it. And he's got nothing to work with.
He's going against backups, you know, the Vanilla schemes, whatever.

(02:03):
But JJ McCarthy looked excellent. Now he's out for a
year getting a miniscus rehab. Okay, But everybody else has
looked good, including now Drake May. And against Philadelphia last night,
and we've had recent drafts. By the way, if you
go to twenty twenty four years ago. That's the greatest
quarterback draft in the history of the league. Nobody wants
to admit it. Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Jordan Love Hurts five

(02:25):
for five, all got big second contracts and they're all
I'm not a huge to a fan, but they're all
top twelve. I think two is in that twelve range.
That's fair, all of them in one class. In fact,
you go back to nineteen eighty three, the John Lway
Jim Kelly, Dan Marino class is considered the all time greatest,
but it's just three. Now we had the Eli Manning,

(02:46):
Big Ben Philip Rivers class that's two thousand and four.
But in twenty twenty, we got five dudes who look
like they can all all get your team on a
playoff run, even to if they're hosting playoff games. So
more of these quarterbacks should be hitting. And I talked
about this with our team this morning as we were preparing.

(03:06):
We've had these seven on seven camps be ramped up
over the last ten to twelve years. The offensive coaching
is just much better. In high school, it's much better.
There's quarterback coaches. It's now not even a cottage industry.
It's a full blown industry, so the quarterback should be
getting better. They take ten thousand snaps by the time
they're thirteen years old. Look go look at Drew Bledsoe

(03:29):
and Troy Aigman's careers. You had to be like your
six year in the NFL to get those snaps. So
the kids had better coaching, more snaps early in their life.
And I think high school and college football coaching gets
smarter and smarter all the time. NFL coaching gets better.
So I watched him last night, and I'm like, could
we have another twenty twenty because it should be hitting.

(03:52):
We should not have as many bus as we do.
It's just like Hollywood figured this out. Hollywood just had
too many misses, many misses. It was art house films, quirky,
niche stuff. The critics loved it, and eventually Hollywood said,
let's just reduce the number of whiffs. Let's do remakes,
let's do franchises. The art critics won't like it, but

(04:13):
we won't have as many whiffs. We want to fill theaters.
Let's do another mission impossible, Let's do another Jason Bourne
like sorry, John Wick, they don't miss and you know,
all the artists are like, there's nothing creative. You're not
paying the bills, you're not raising the capitol. And so
I look at the quarterback position and my take is

(04:34):
we got to have fewer whiffs. And it looks like
if Drake now now, there are going to be misses.
But if you look at recent misses, let's think about him.
Zach Wilson, well, that was a COVID class. He didn't
have enough good snaps against good teams. Trey Lance miss
he didn't have enough good snaps in high school or
college against good teams. Kenny Pickett, Steelers took the hometown kid.

(04:56):
So those were red flags. Those were major red flags.
You try to avoid those. Pittsburgh got a little desperate.
Jets were after Sam Donald a little desperate. Uh. Then
San Francisco and hits on brock Purty. So we forget
about it. But I mean the reality is, if you
looked at Drake May last night, my take was, oh this, God,
get him some weapons now, and he's got stuff to

(05:18):
overcome defensive rookie head coach. They have a broken offensive culture.
The old lines have eroded for several years. They don't
have enough weapons but you're watching Drake May last night.
My takeaway is something. I know, I know it's I
know it's Philadelphia, it's preseason, but it was something and
here's the coach and the kid after he had great composure.

(05:42):
I thought it was a good drive. I thought he
went out there and did a lot of good things.
So hopefully he can build on that and we'll see
how this week goes.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, have some good things. Has some bad plays, uh,
I said, drop snaps, you know, excusable for me, and
in that probably just sometimes I don't scrambling when occupies,
sit in there and hang on and try to make
a throw. So definitely a lot of these learned from
could get out there. And you said, I guess some
tape to learn from.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
All right, now, I want to talk about something that
makes me very happy. I've said before I've never losst
more money betting in my life than I have on
the Atlanta Falcons. But I think they're going to be
a twelve win team this year. But the rest of
the media not us. I've got I've got tape, archives
and articles, not us. The rest of the media made

(06:33):
the Falcons a pinata in February for not hiring Belichick
and then in April for drafting Michael Pennix, And I
kept hearing what about safety, what about edge rusher? Well,
the Atlanta Falcons have signed in the last three days
Matthew ju don An, Edgrusser, and yesterday an excellent young safety,

(06:56):
a free agent Justin Simmons from Denver. Check safety check,
edge rusher check. And they got Michael Pennix. How can
you not sign Belichick because Raheem Morris is younger, more offensive, friendly,
best friends with Sean McVay, and collaborative. He'll let the

(07:17):
scouting department do the drafting. How can you not hire Belichick?
Look at New England's roster Bill controlled it last seven years.
It is a kneemic. They will pick first or second
in next year's draft. That is all on Belichick. That's
why he's broadcasting like us and not coaching. That's why well, well, well,

(07:39):
but the Cousins thing. Hmm. Interesting. I'm going to give
you seven teams last year that literally it was a
catastrophe at quarterback, not one or two a quarter of
the league, Jets, Raiders, Giants, Viking, Steelers, Brown's Falcons. Go

(08:02):
back one season. We had quarterbacks who I'm not sure
were NFL quarterbacks. I mean, oh, by the way, the Jets, Giants,
and Raiders, boy, they had good edge rushers. They could
have done themselves well drafting another quarterback. So the Atlanta

(08:26):
Falcons said, yeah, we watched the Jets and the Raiders
in Cleveland and the Steelers and the Vikings and the
Falcons we don't do that. So what we want to
do is draft a young guy after we sign an
old guy, ensuring that regardless of what happens, we've got
the future and we've got the present covered. Yeah, a

(08:48):
lot of those bad NFL teams last year that were
a circus at quarterback. Cleveland had Miles Garrett, you know,
the Jets had Bryce Hoff, the Raiders had Max Crosby,
the Giants have Thibodeaux, all had great head rushers. They
were a clown show at quarterback. And the Falcon said, now,
we don't want to do that, and that's a catastrophe.

(09:11):
I looked up an article that was printed after I
defended Atlanta back during the draft, and I'll just read
you basically what I said. Every great asset in America,
every one, it could be a yacht. It could be
your mansion has an insurance policy. Having two capable quarterbacks
is a disaster. And most insurance policies you pay into

(09:33):
them for years and you never make any money out
of it. You never get anything back. It's a one
way street. Atlanta is going to have an insurance policy
Michael Pennock's for just one year, and then it's going
to pay them like an annuity for the next fifteen.
That's a disaster. It was all Belichick's allies and old heads.

(09:54):
It reminds me of baseball living in their echo chamber
complaining about the pitch clock. It works. Next issue, the
games are better. Attendant up ratings out pitch clock works.
Having an extra quarterback does not rise to the level
of catastrophe. The Vikings are already out one of their quarterbacks.

(10:15):
Matt Stafford's already missing time with a sore hammy. Listen,
you can be a linebacker shy, an edge rusher shy.
They're always available at the trade deadline. It's not a
scarcity issue. It's a cost issue. You're willing to pay
for it. So what do you know. The Atlanta Falcons,

(10:36):
who everybody crushed, now they have their future quarterback their
present quarterback, a Pro Bowl level safety and a great
edge rusher. Ah, and they'll be just fine without Belichick.
They'll be just fine. I promise you. I may not
vet them every week. I've learned from that, but it's

(10:58):
all gonna be okay. J Mack, you know you love
college basketball more than almost anybody I know, and you
bet it very well. I've given you credit for years.
You bet it very well.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
I had it.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
I've had some good runs. I'm probably more well versed
in the NFL than I am college whopers. But you're
everybody should be in our space.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
You have to be yes. Okay.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
But though and I used to love it, I covered
you and l V out of college, and then it
became a turnstyle and nobody stays in college. And you know,
you watch the draft, it's like what country, what league,
what G league? What school is that guy from? It
feels like you're being constantly in an introduced to new people.
I have no connection with them, so it's too much
of a turnstyle. I do think it's I think it's

(11:40):
flipping back with the nil that more guys will stay
in school at the Kansas Carolina Villanova Syracuse Top schools.
Very interesting though, Jmack is that the NBA schedule came
out and it once again proves the biggest blunder Adam's
is made. It once again proves and I like Adam

(12:04):
Silver and I you and I like the NBA, but
they have an issue and their new schedule proves it.
Oh boy, we'll talk about that coming up, Jimmy Johnson,
Hall of Fame Coach Top next Hour.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and newon eastern non am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
There's five quarterbacks in this league stories that I'm really
really interested in just as a consumer. I'm a fan
now number one my five most interesting quarterbacks. The Caleb
Williams thing is fascinating. He's polarizing. The Bears have a
coach on the hot seat. The Bears are the only
NFL franchise that's never had a four thousand yard passer.

(12:46):
They've done defense well a lot of years. Could this
kid be there, Jordan? Could he be the guy that
literally changes the franchise? He is really talented. I don't
know the answer. I think he's going to be productive
I don't know if he wins a lot of games
this year. The schedule's pretty tough. The Packers, Lions, Vikings
all capable. This kid will get me to the one

(13:06):
o'clock window on Fox. Second is Aaron Rodgers. This season
could help kind of cement his career. We know he's talented,
but little prickly calling out his coach occasionally. Don't love that,
miss little Lota in Egypt. Don't love it. Not the
end of the world. Robert solid Natt Hackett on the

(13:27):
hot seat. There's a lot of combustible stuff going on on.
Crossing my fingers. He stays upright. They're rebuilding the offensive
line with potentially a rookie getting big snaps. Can Elijah
Vera Tucker stay healthy? He needs protection erins at too listen.
I'd put Patrick Mahomes going to try to do something
Tom Brady and Joe Montana couldn't do, win a third
straight Super Bowl. It's been a very noisy offseason. I

(13:49):
still think their wide receiver group is a bunch of
question marks and not a lot of answers. But if
anybody can do it, it's him. Can he become the
first ever back to back to back super Bowl winning quarterback,
certainly got the talent Number four justin Herbert don't have
a playoff win, but damn he's good. Now he finally
gets an elite coach. He's out of a walking boot.

(14:09):
Reportedly this morning he's ready to roll. They don't have
much at wide receiver. They're hoping that kid out of
Georgia's second rounder can work. He's one of these kids.
He was sensational as a rookie, had Shane Steichen, and
we're just kind of waiting for him to pop. He's
the last young quarterback that we all think is good
and we're waiting for stuff beyond stats. He'd be number
four and number five, the mercurial Russell Wilson. I don't

(14:33):
know what to make of it. He literally was so
good in Seattle. He got guys like Johnny Manzel Baker
Mayfield drafted, and I don't know what's happened to his career.
He got teammates calling him out, Sean Payton and Pete
Carroll dumped him. It's a weird career, but I'm really
excited to watch it now. There is an honorable mention.

(14:54):
I banged the table in the morning meeting to get
him in the top five. The staff. I get no
support at all from the staff. I think Sam Darnold
is fascinating on his fourth team, trying to resurrect his career,
but the staff would not The staff would not allow
me to put him in the top five. I'm rooting

(15:15):
for Sammy. I thought he was going to be a star.
What do I know. Here's somebody that does no stuff,
Jimmy Johnson, the Hall of Famers, super Bowl rings, college
national championships. You know, as I do that list, the
airing thing is fascinating. So he's a first ballot Hall
of Famer. Nobody doubts that he's smart. But I got
to tell every time he's on in front of the microphone,

(15:37):
it's like he's just poking people. He's poking the GM,
he's poking, he's poking the media. It's a little exhausting
as a consumer of it. Would it drive you nuts
as a coach that he just doesn't walk up there
say vanilla stuff like Eli Manning and go sit down?
What do you make of it?

Speaker 4 (15:54):
No? I like it. I'm interested in what he has
to say, and you probably would like it as well.
If he'd gone to USC, but he didn't go to USC.
You criticize it.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
Yeah, those cow guys. I got no time for calcul
I want to talk a little bit about you and
Jerry are are finally back to a good space. But Jimmy,
I don't love the way he handles these stars. To me,
if you draft a guy in the first round and

(16:31):
he hits and he's in a valuable position, just get
the contract done, get it out of the news cycle.
I feel like Jerry's trying to get squeeze extra juice
out of it to get free publicity. I don't like it.
Just sign ceed lamb. What do you make of the
way they handle.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
It, Well, he's really in a bind. You know, Jerry's
in a bind with these contracts. He's got three players
that want to be the highest pay player at their position,
and you know he made a mistake by not re
signing them earlier than what he's been doing right now.

(17:07):
The other thing is he's got the quarterback situation with
Dak Prescott, and I think the entire league's got a
problem here because if you don't have a quality quarterback.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
You're not going to win, right.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
Everybody understands that, but The only thing is good quarterbacks
are demanding great money. Yes, and they're not great quarterbacks.
They're not great players, but because their contract is up,
they're going to be the highest paid player at that position.
And this is kind of escalated here for the last
couple of years because every owner is desperate and they

(17:41):
understand they got to have a quarterback. They've got to
have a quality quarterback, and the quarterback money is taking
too big a piece of the pie as far as
the salary cap.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
So the NFL changed rules through your career, They're constantly tweaking.
They have a new kickoff now it looks weird. They
should probably just take the UFL version, but they probably
have too much ego and pride to just steal theirs.
It's probably better, right. I'm watching it, and I'm like, well,
why not just kick it out of the end zone.

(18:10):
I don't want anybody hurt, and I'm not. I don't
want to what's the point? So I don't think I.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
Love it too Luckily, I hate it. Yeah, I do
love it because before it was a non play. Just
kick it out of the end zone and then put
the ball. You know, they're at the line of scrimmage
and go about your business. But I think there's some
strategy involved. Now, if you want to play field position,
you kick the ball to about the ten. If you've
got a good coverage unit and they don't have an

(18:39):
outstanding returner, you know you're going to get good field position.
They're glably get a penalty on that same return and
really back them up. Now, if you're protecting a lead,
or you're afraid of their return man, or you don't
have a good coverage unit, you kick it out of
the back of the end zone. Yeah, they're towards the
end of the game. If you've got the lead and

(18:59):
you want to just win the game, just kick it
out of the engine. Give them the ball on the thirty, no,
no problem. But if you're fighting for field position, kick
it to the ten cover and then that way you're
going to get better field position.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 6 (19:21):
Hey what's up, everybody, It's me three time pro bowler
LeVar Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce
a podcast called Up on Game.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
What is up on Game?

Speaker 6 (19:30):
You ass along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Hutschman
Zada and Super Bowl champion. Yup, that's right, Plexico Buruts.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it. Up on Game We're going to be
sharing our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen
to Up on Game with me LeVar Arrington, TJ. Huschman Zada,

(19:53):
and Plexico Burrs on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your pot cast fro.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
The You know it's different today, Jimmy. These kids that
come into the NFL at quarterback seven on seven camps
coachings better in high school and college. I want to
see him play. I'm a little less likely to sit him,
although I think Drake may probably needs to. But do
you think in your time it was different. Some guys
had started two three years in college. They didn't have camps,

(20:24):
they didn't have ten thousand throws. If you were coaching
in the NFL today, would you be more demanding on
your rookie quarterbacks?

Speaker 2 (20:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (20:33):
Well, of course I was demanding from day one. I've
put eightmen in there, and he got sacked. Nine times
by Philadelphia and nearly got killed. But anyway, I think
because of the salary camp and because the quarterbacks are
better prepared you coming into professional football, they're more ready
to play. You look at Caleb Williams, I mean he's

(20:53):
lighting enough. Of course, he was an outstanding player right
off the bat. You know, I love watching him play.
He's ready to go out there and win games. And
I think he will win games because they've got a
pretty good defense and a decent football team. You look
at Daniels. I think he is a tremendous athlete and
I'm anxious to see him play. But uh, I don't

(21:15):
know how good a football team they've got. But you're right, quarterbacks,
you know, rookies now, they don't sit. You know, if
they're good enough, put him out there and let him play.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
So did you you made Troy Aikman play? But did
you unveil the playbook in stages or did you treat
him like he'd been in the league twelve years?

Speaker 4 (21:34):
Please, I'd only been in the league for two years.
I would just learn the playbook myself. It was a
matter of being Troy kind of grew up together.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
Yeah, no, I get that. So when you so, here
we go into this season, the season is now longer,
there's there's speculation it's going to be an eighteen game season.
So you know it's Belichick. Nobody now plays starters in
the preseason. Once McVeigh didn't, people have bailed. I look
at September football, and I don't know what I'm seeing.

(22:10):
Are you comfortable with the current trend of just not
playing starters, especially older guys in the preseason and just
doing harder practices.

Speaker 4 (22:19):
And yeah, they're getting their physical work with some of
the scrimmages they have against some teams. But I did
a study all back a few years ago. We were
looking at all the injuries that happened early in the season,
and you know, I did a poll with about three
fourths of the trainers in the league, and every trainer

(22:40):
to a person said, because they don't have a lot
of physical work in the training camp in the early part,
that's why they're seeing so many injuries, a lot of
soft tissue injuries, et cetera. Yeah, you've got to have
full speed physical work, especially for your offensive line to
kind of get into coordination. And also, you know, players.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Got to be able to take a hit.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
They got to know how to follow, they know how
to be in Apollo. You know, they need physical work
to prevent some of these injuries. But that's one one
reason you see so many injuries in the early part
of the season.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
Jimmy Johnson, the Hall of Famer. One of the things
that's happened over the last ten years is the rules
have pivoted significantly to the offense's favor. It's just easier
as an offensive coach can't grab corners. There's just it's
just it's hard. As a defensive coach, you feel like
you're almost working against the system. Everything's built for Andy

(23:35):
Reid right in McVeigh and all that. So and I
look at that and I think we also have something
going on. We know that receivers are more valuable now,
but it does feel, Jimmy a little bit like a
wide receiver economic bubble is there is no proof that
superstar number one receivers win trophies. There is proof that

(23:58):
a deep receiving corps does. I'm seeing some of these salaries.
I like Brandon Aiyuk. I love Trent Williams, the left tackle.
That's who I love, right, What do you make of
some of these salaries. I'm not saying they're not great players,
but I need a quarterback, a left tackle on an
edge rusher. What do you make of the quarterback. The

(24:20):
receiver market has exploded in the last three years.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Yeah, I agree with you, you know, for the most part,
you know, Colin, I think you know, by far, the
quarterbacks the most important player on your team, and then
maybe the backup quarterback right after that. But then, but
your offensive line. You mentioned Trent Williams, but I think
having a solid offensive line, and don't don't overlook this

(24:45):
an offensive line coach. So sometimes an offensive line coach
can take pretty good players and make them a solid unit.
So the offensive line coach, the offensive line, the quarterbacks,
and then you can find receivers. Now, obviously everybody's not
gonna be Tyreek Hill, you know, but there's some quality

(25:06):
receivers out there and you find them. There's a lot
of them coming out of college. Yeah, but that's some
of the most important parts of your football team. And
you could win and that way, have a solid defense
and you can win a lot of games with that
quarterback and some a group of receivers and a solid
offensive line.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
Finally, you were not on the hot seat much as
a coach. I think Matt Eberflus is gonna feel it
in September. I think Mike McCarthy is our friend. Dave
wanstat Oas says, you can lose games, you lose three
in a row, you lose a locker room. And so
my take is, get ceedee lamb into camp here because
this offense, it doesn't have a lot of juice after

(25:43):
CD you tell me for an eber flus Er McCarthy
and those Dennis Allen, could you sense and again, you
weren't on the hot seat much. But does the temperature
in the locker room change when you go into a
two game losing streak? Could you sent it as a coach?

Speaker 4 (26:02):
Yeah, I think so. I was on the hot seat
after I won two Super Bowls, So it's a little
bit different now. As far as McCarthy, I think this.
You're in the last year of your contract. Win big
and you're gonna get a huge contract, right then you
have all the leverage, you know, so you know people say,

(26:22):
well he's under pressure. Well, hey, every coach is under
pressure every year, every coach in the league. But it
doesn't bother me. Being in the last year of the
contract because you've got to win. Regardless of what the
contract is. You ain't paid plenty of money. You got
plenty of money in the bank, but win big and
you will demand a huge, huge contract.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
Yeah, is there is there a single team? We all
know who's good in this league?

Speaker 2 (26:48):
Did?

Speaker 1 (26:49):
I love Detroit's roster. I love their front office. I've
always thought goff is underrated, best O line in the sport.
But you know, Jimmy, it is hard to break through
it a losing culture. You start, you know, you go
on a losing street you have you know, the Rams
are getting the Super Bowls now Kansas City. They think
they're gonna win in close games. Detroit fascinates me. When

(27:12):
you were losing in Dallas early, how do you break
that cycle because you took over a cowboy team that
was losing with coach Landry you lost early? How do
you break that cycle before you've broken through and won
a trophy the same.

Speaker 5 (27:28):
Way Dan Campbell's doing it there in Detroit. Work and
being a physical football team, that's what breaks it because
if you work them hard enough, they get to believe
in that they're going to win, so they that that
instills the confidence that they're going to win, so hard
work and being.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
A physical football team. If you're not a physical football team,
you're not really sure if you're going to win or not. Yeah,
you got to get some lucky breaks. But if you're
a physical football team, you go into the contest saying, hey,
we're fixing the kick their rear.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Yeah, yeah, that's a great point. All Right, you already
got you already did your fishing, so I don't feel
as guilty. You'll be back on the boat on Monday.
You look great as always, Coach. It's great having you.
Thank you, all right, Color, I enjoyed it all right.
