This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
What Up. Welcome in. This is not Herd. Wherever you
may be and however you may be, making this part
of your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb. I'm
in for Colin.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
Callahert.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Colin's epic vacation we believe will come to an end,
will be back Monday, maybe Tuesday. I don't I don't
really know. I don't control Collin's catchup Vactually must be
Tuesday because I'm filling in for Dan on Monday. But
it was there was the possibility of Colin on Monday,
So that means things you don't care about.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I know.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
So you're on your way to Lake Beach, Mountain family,
or maybe you know in a cruel joke, cruel twist,
your kid's first high school football game is tonight, or
your favorite college team plays tomorrow or play Sunday, whatever,
So you're kind of your last holiday weekend of summer's
kind of screwed up a little bit, I'm sorry. And
(01:25):
your last Friday before you know college football season really
truly kicks off is kind of screwed up because I'm hosting,
not colling. Sorry, I can't help you with those things,
but I can help you with some perspective. On last night,
it was the late great Denny Green who won a
Monday night football game. And we forget so quickly that
(01:47):
Denny Green coached the Arizona Cardinals. We think of a
Denny Green, we think of the Minnesota Vikings, but he
coached the Arizona Cardinals, and the Cardinals were not very good.
I think Matt Lioner might have been their quarterback. Maybe
it was Kurt Warner, but was before they made the
run towards the Super Bowl and the Bears were good.
(02:08):
This I think was coming off of the Super Bowl
year and on a Monday night football game, the Cardinals
had the Bears right where they want them and they
couldn't close the deal, couldn't win the game, and they
let them off the hook, right. But it was the
big line which most sports radio producers and board ops
(02:31):
they have up there on screen, which is they are
who we thought they were, and that's Colorado, right, That's Colorado.
And it's always interesting to me on how we have
these expectations of guy shows up and you know, six
days later they have themselves a great football program. Now,
(02:55):
in fairness, what I saw Bob Stoops do and transform
Oklahoma was nothing short of miraculous. Oklahoma during the last
year of the John Blake era was an abject disaster,
but it was not devoid of talent. They just John
Blake's last game. And John Blake was a I think
(03:17):
he passed away recently as well. John Blake was a
really well regarded man and recruiter, but he wasn't a
very good X No NOS coach. And his last regular
season game, I think his last game of his coaching
career as head coach was against Oklahoma State. And in
that game, they ran some shotguns. Before we call it spread,
it wasn't spread. They ran some shotgun, they ran some
(03:39):
power Eye, and they ran some wishbone as well, all
in the same game. None of it worked. None of
us pretty well. There was no kind of foundation or
theme or what they did. They just went out there
and played stoops takes over and if you remember that
first year, they did take up a walloping I believe
text A and m beat him like six, six to three.
(04:00):
But after that year two it was on. He found
his quarterback in Josh Hipel is now the head coach
at Tennessee. The system which was installed by Mike Leach.
Mike Leachchech actually left and went to Texas Tech because
the head coach after one year and they started to
run the football a little bit more and got a
lot more conservative. But more than anything, the defense kind
of just took over ast dominant. That was a five
(04:25):
hundred team that became a national championship team in two years.
And because because we've seen it there, because we saw
it with Urban Meyer, you know, two years in Ohio State,
two years in at Florida, our assumption is that Dion
Sanders could do the same thing at Colorado and that's
(04:49):
not happening now. I don't know what their ultimate ceiling is,
because it stands to reason they're a better team this
year than they were last year, and their their league
their conference is easier. This year was last year, and
you could sit there and yell and scream me all
you want and say I'm some SEC or Big ten
wonk or Pack ten lover or whatever you want to
call me. I'm actually in love them. Of the Big Twelve,
(05:11):
I'm proplling the Big Twelve. I think the Big Twelve
was awesome. And if you want to say top to bottom,
there's better athletes than the Big Twelve than that we're
in the Pac twelve. I'm okay with that. The difference
is last year was a special year in the Pac twelve,
where you had fifth year quarterbacks at Washington, at Oregon,
you had the number one pick at usc you had
(05:33):
a six year pit quarterback who didn't play. Now he's
seventh year at Utah. Like you just had dudes. Arizona
was loaded. It was an incredible league last season. And
while the Big Twelve I think will be really good.
I think it's going to end up being the third
best league some years, the fourth, this year probably the third.
The difference is last year was an unbelievable year, and
(05:55):
it was year one for Colorado and they walked into
a bunch of buzzsaws, The difference is that this year
North Dakota State hard game, well coached team. They're not
the same since their coach left for Kansas State. But
then they go to Nebraska and Colorado State, two games
(06:15):
they won at home last year after surprising everybody being
TCU to start the year. But I watched last night
and I felt like, anybody have kids that likes to
go to Beny Hannah, I have you here? Asked my son, Hey,
you can pick one restaurant on Earth to have a
(06:36):
reservation at one restaurant. And my son is not sheltered.
He's really not. You know, He's lived in Connecticut and
in California and Oklahoma. He's been to Wisconsin and to
Maine and to New Hampshire and to Minnesota and to
(06:56):
Illinois and to Texas. He's been to Nevada. He's been
to an Arizona. He's been to a lot of places.
So at fifteen years old, if I would say to
him like, hey, dude, you can have a resi at
any restaurant ever on Earth right now, do you know
what he'd pick? He'd pick Benny Hanna. And to those
(07:17):
of us are adults, we go to Betty Hanna and
we're like, okay, here comes the egg thing, right, here
comes the volcano fire, volcano fire. Then they'll cook the
chicken usually first, right, the chicken first, and then they
take the spatula and they can kind of flip the
chicken into your mouth. Then get to the land in
your mouth, any of these things. Anyone who's ever been
(07:40):
to Benny Hanna. I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, And
at the end of the day, you're like, yes, it's fine,
it's fine, it's in no way bad. But no one
ever says, you know, I know you can go to
a Mission Star restaurant, but what you should do is
try that Betty Hanna over Newport. It's amazing, Like it's
(08:01):
just not.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
So.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I look at Colorado football last night and I think
it was like Benny Hannah, you know, Shador is good.
He's better than advertised.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Obviously.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Travis Hunter is amazing, just an amazing young football player.
Last touchdown catch was incredible, how to make it. I'm
sure he's good enough on defense, although it's hard to tell,
like we don't have an ISO cam on him. Like
he's big time. Those two guys are really good football players,
and you know they scored at the end of the
(08:36):
first half, kind of like it's a party trick. But
at the end of the day, their defense isn't very good.
They can't run the football, they're kind of soft. Chador's good,
but you know, it feels like the whole deal is
just set up for him to be a star so
that he can win a Heistro Trophy, he can be
a high draft pick. Like that's really it's not set
up with the idea of, hey, let's win a bunch
of football games. Let's grind it out, let's be tougher,
(08:59):
let's be nasty, let's be mean here. Now, that's not
how they can play. It's just like a trip to
Benny Hannah. Whereas there's lots of kids like Marin Colorado's
playing the rest are like it's okay, it's fine. They
be North Dakota State. They didn't cover there was nothing,
no lasting takeaways. It's not like I want the two
(09:21):
hours back or two and a half hours back from
watching the game. But it's not like I'm calling my
friends like did you watch that game? That was an
amazing game? Did you see what he did? I can't
believe what he did? And then there's the weird part
of Dion Sanders. They get the ball back. They get
the ball back with less than two minutes to go.
(09:44):
It's like a minute thirty five o'clock first down, and
North Dakota State has one timeout. And it's not like
we haven't seen this before, like we saw it last year.
Did Mario Cristo Bulpol one of these deals out last
year where he tried to score an extra touchdown and
end up losing the game? I think was the Georgia
Tech I want to say last season. Anyway, here you
(10:07):
have Deon Sanders. All you has to do is take
an e, take an ee, take a knee, and if
they wanted to punt, then they could punt. Then you know,
you could quick kick it script it down there. It
would have been ten seconds left. The game is essentially over.
Like if you're really creative about it, you can run
(10:28):
around for ten seconds back there before you take one
of the knees and then take a knee and the
game would have been over after the third play of
the time expired with one time out left. Instead, they
decided to throw the ball on first down, where Schner
badly under threw the ball. Lucky wasn't intercepted, which allowed
(10:50):
for a bunch of times. And even though Colorado State
didn't Colaro State, even though North Kota State didn't do
anything out of it, they sure as hell could have.
Here's Dion when he was talking about past seen late
in the game.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Shador is such.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
A good kid.
Speaker 6 (11:03):
Sometimes it costs hims because at the end of the game,
we just want to run the ball.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Let's get out of here.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
And he took a shot, you know, to Legonte because
he wanted Lejontay to have a big play.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
But that's his character.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
I'm like, come on, dog, not right now. You know,
it's not time to the good guy right now, it's
time to put this game way you ever felt like
you want, but you didn't win. Let's move on from there.
I'm gonna try my best to hold back mine anger.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
But we got the w so okay. So here's the thing,
either Shador, either Shador is lying or Dion's lying right,
because that story doesn't make any sense. Remember, we're told
how smart football player Shaudor is, and I'm willing to
believe it that he is ready to be a pro quarterback.
(11:52):
I'm ready to believe it. No one plays quarterback with
any sort of football like you to win a game
and throws the football there because this boy needs to
get a touchdown. No one does that. There's only there's
(12:12):
only really a couple of possibilities. One is they're trying
to win awards, trying to have Heigsman moments, trying to
win awards. That's what it felt like, you know, throwing
a touchdown late when they're in zero coverage and all
you're doing is taking a knee. That's trying to pump
up the stats. That's what that is. That's a possibility.
(12:35):
It could be possibility that Dion's trying to do that
for a sun or trying to run out the score.
That's possibility, or or they're telling the truth and it's
the dumbest football decision you've ever seen in your life. Possibility,
but as remote of possibilities you can possibly get. So
what do we have in summation? Dion thinks they're way
(12:59):
better than they play. The rest of us watch there like, eh,
same thing, a little bit better, same thing, you know,
and you walk away thinking, you know where it's good.
Travis Hutter's good. I've seen the volcano trick. I've seen
the egg thing. I've seen a little flip your spatchlow
(13:19):
with your piece of chicken into my mouth thing like
I don't know, I'm probably gonna be hungry in like
forty minutes again. Anyway, all right, coming to next in
the Herd. We've all seen Sean McVay on the sidelines
and TV with all that energy. But what's he really like?
(13:42):
Well ask Ky Williams. He'll join us up coming next.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Easter not a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
The DAWs Cowboys are always interesting. And I've said this
on my show that which follows this show on most
Fox Sports traded iHeart and then on the iHeartRadio apps
called the Doug Gottlieb Show, is that we can we
can make fun of Jerry Jones and all the things
he says and his incessant desire to get to the
(14:17):
Super Bowl. But if I do grow a little tired
of people saying, well, Jerry Jones needs to give away
some of the personnel decisions. Don't get me wrong, I
love watching the Cowboys lose in the playoffs as much
or more than anybody right now living in Green Bay,
(14:37):
just thinking back to how enjoyable was to watch the
Green Bay Packers with a defense that wasn't particularly good
last year, go in and what they put up forty
eight on the Cowboys and the two pick sixes in
the first half.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
Like.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
That was that was just enjoyable. I'm not a Cowboys fan,
I'm not a Cowboys hair whatever reason, that was just enjoyable.
Don't get me wrong, love watching the Cowboys lose, Okay, America, don't.
It's like, man, you want to you want to isolate yourself.
Tell people who that wasn't an enjoyable experience.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
It was.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
It was. But I would also tell you that there's
no one who works in the NFL covers the NFL
knows anything about the NFL is like, yeah, they don't
have very good players. Everyone believes they have really good players,
really good players, and to maintain their level of success
over the last three four years without top five draft
(15:34):
picks continues to be impressive. The problem is that when
you draft your own, you got to pay your own
and here they are once again in that cycle where
they paid CD Lamb and they're gonna have to You
know that you have Michael Parsons and elite defensive player,
You're gonna have to pay him eventually. And then Dak's
in the last last year of his contract. Here is
(15:57):
dak answering questions from reporters best Country situation.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
As I said, well back in camp, it's it's two
parts of this. Both sides have to come to the groom.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
You don't need a deal done before the season.
Speaker 7 (16:08):
I don't need to know, No, do what you like
it done before the season. I think it says a
lot if it is or if it isn't. But however
it doesn't. It doesn't really matter to me, to be
honest with you, if it isn't. Just how people feel.
That's the business and the nature of this, this game
that we play. Uh yeah, I mean I stopped honestly
listening to things that he says to the media a
(16:29):
long time ago, so it doesn't really hold away with me.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah, I mean, he is saying talk is cheap. He
is saying Jerry talks a lot, and it doesn't but
which we all you know, and he's able to get
away with some of that. But doesn't it feel like
Daxon's quarterback because he knows that's where he can get
his most consistent pay. And and for Jerry, they're like
the cowboys are in that situation where it's not that
(16:56):
they love their relationship or love their quarterback, but do
you really want to go ahead and find another quarterback?
I guarantee you there are what do we think, Ryan
forty percent of guys, fifty percent of guys, and I
would say women, many of you are in the same
place as well, where you're in a relationship. You're like,
(17:17):
do you love him? Yeah, I mean sure, and we've
been together a long time. Do you want to spend
every waking day with him? Like everyone, yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, whatever, Well,
so why don't you just dump him and find some
els like oh my god? Do you know? Like then
(17:39):
I got to do pictures and I got to do
a dating app or I got to new people, and yeah,
maybe eventually you find some some you know, some incredible
nine or eight. Think who doesn't know that she's a
she can be a ten or whatever. She and you
have a great relationship, but getting it place and going
(18:01):
through first dates and you know, the holidays are coming up,
You're like, we mean, the holidays are in December August, Like, yeah,
but you can't bring somebody to a holiday party or
to your family unless you've been dating for a while.
And right now, like if we start, if I start
dating somebody new, like we got to the holidays, you're
alone again. It's miserable.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
It's sort of a sliding scale, right when you asked
about like fifty percent is the percentage is much lower
when you're younger, and then as you grow older and
the marriages slash relationships are longer and have been decades now,
you start getting a much higher percentage of they're just
(18:42):
together for convenience. Yeah, because at some point when you're
married for forty years, you're like, I'm not starting over.
What's the point.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yeah, that's that's pretty much it, because you're just going like, eh, yeah,
she's she's a level of any that I can tolerate.
And I'm sure and women are probably the same thing, like,
oh god, he's a level of annoying that I can tolerate,
which is dak like, look, we're gonna win twelve games
a year, no off the field issues, good dude. Everybody
(19:14):
likes some great backstory, the whole story with him is amazing?
Is he an all time great quarterback? No? Are you
in a Super Bowl? Probably not? But will be good
every year? Well why don't you just trying to find
a great one? Like well, okay, look at the Miami Dolphins.
They search for thirty years to find their replacement for
(19:34):
Damn Reno and they have two and we all know
too is not good enough. And the Buffalo bill searched
thirty years for replacment from Jim Kelly. Josh Allen's really
really good? Was he worth a thirty year?
Speaker 4 (19:50):
Wait?
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Probably not.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
So.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
I just it is that it's a relationship of convenience
and it works both ways. Like, let's be honest, you're
the Dallas Cowboys, Like, man, what if we had a
legit dude, Like, what if we had one of the
elite throwers? We had so many guys, I mean, Ceedee
Lambs so good we are, so we get so many
weapons offensively. Yeah, but if we don't have him and
(20:20):
we yeah, sure we save money. Because my proposal will
be going to the draft. You know, go get a
guy through the draft and you don't have to be
a first round pick. I mean, Brock Purty obviously those
are a few and far between, mister irrelevant, But there's
got to be somebody that you know. The difference is
paying a guy a million a year or paying a
guy sixty million a year, like you mean to tell
me for fifty nine million dollars. We can't go out
(20:42):
and find a couple guys and make that guy look
better as a quarterback. Of course we can't. So why
don't we do it well? Cause trying to find that
next quarterbacks really really hard, really hard, and those years
almost never work out. Here was dak answering questions about
his quarterback situation. That's his contract situation.
Speaker 7 (21:06):
As I said, well back in camp, it's two parts
of this. Both sides have to come to the groom.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
You don't need a deal done before the season.
Speaker 7 (21:13):
I don't need to know, No, do what you.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
Like it done before the season.
Speaker 7 (21:17):
I think it says a lot if it is or
if it isn't. But however it doesn't, It doesn't really
matter to me, to be honest.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
With you, What does this say if it isn't.
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Just how people feel.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
It says a lot. Says how they feel is that
we're doing that. We're doing that again, that's the Lamar Jackson.
You don't love Lamar unless you're paying fifty million dollars
a year. Like, yeah, Dak, we've played you a lot
of money for a long time. We still love you.
We just don't sixty million dollars a year love you,
especially when you have the largest cap hit in the
(21:46):
history of the sport right now.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
I mean it's sort of to your point about how
it goes both ways, like I mean, Aaron Rodgers. We'll
see how things eventually turn out for the Jets, But
I mean you want to talk about wanting to go
to where the grass is greener. I mean most people
would say he clearly had a much better situation in
Green Bay, and now we may end up going to
(22:15):
regret it with the Jets and with Dak. Yes, there
are going to be the rare circumstances like Tom Brady
to the Bucks to where teams may be fully ready
to go and there's just a quarterback away. But I
mean the Cowboys have done a good job of surrounding
him with enough talent to win a lot in the
(22:36):
regular season, and if one of these teams that hasn't
been good and you know, is finally hitting the open market,
like I don't know teams that could be in the
quarterback situation next year, like the Carolina Panthers if everything
goes south, Like do you want to play in Carolina?
Speaker 4 (22:54):
First?
Speaker 3 (22:55):
But here's the other thing though, with Dak okay, and
again I think Dak is good, but who in that
division scaress a quarterback. Jalen Hurts had a one great year.
He's good, He's okay, He's not the best quarterback on earth. Right,
Nobody thinks Danny Dime's gonna be the quarterback next year.
And you got a rookie in in DC who people
(23:18):
think is gonna be good, But we don't know if
Jane Dane's gonna be good. Right, So you have you
are the most veteran quarterback in that division. You got
a coach's one super Bowl, You've been to the playoffs
the past two years. Like what more do we need?
Either you can or you cannot do it? So I
don't if I'm Dak, I s t fu don't. I
(23:38):
don't say anything because the only thing that matters is
how he does in the playoffs this year. And are
the Cowboys gonna you know, Grin and Barrett if he
doesn't perform well in the playoffs yet again, and they'll
go like, do we want to move on? Do we
want to stay with the same guy? All right? Coming
up next year in the Herd, the forty nine ers
(23:59):
finally got the bringing a Ke deal. Figured out what's
it mean for Trent Williams. Well that's John Middlecoff. He
joins us next.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
One more Heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you like Paulli fools,
go here with Tony Foosco. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (24:19):
As everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning
Polly and Tony Foodsco Show. Yeah, but instead of us
telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Patrick
described us when he came on our show.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
What what are you doing interrupting our promo?
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Yeah, you wasn't talking about you. You took those clips
totally of context.
Speaker 8 (24:39):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Let me put this into context.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
Shut up.
Speaker 8 (24:46):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fusco
show on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
Yee, let's welcome in front of the show. Friend of
Collins from the mind. Of course you hear him his
podcast the Volume podcast Network. He's none other than John Middlecoff.
Three and Out is the podcast and John, let's get
into last night. Okay, let's just start prospect wise is
a guy who evaluates What are your thoughts on Shador
(25:14):
Sanders as an NFL quarterback?
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Well, he's clearly, I mean, a pretty special talent right movement,
arm strength, deep ball accuracy, playmaking. We've seen the last
handful of years guys with those physical skills go really
really high. Now, you know last night was at one
point in time you're like, oh, this could go really
(25:37):
bad for these guys. They showed a little adversity. End
of the day. It's North Dakota State who to me,
it's still they're closer to like a Mountain West program
like that. That's a real win. But he's going to
be evaluated to like truly go one because let's say
Carson Beck or you know, Quinn Yours, who I'm not
(25:59):
that big of, but they're playing real teams. It's the SEC.
He's playing the big twelve, which could be pretty good. Right, Well,
we'll see he's got some talented teams on paper, and
he's got an opportunity I think, I mean to solidify
himself as the top two or three player in the
draft because there's no disputing his skills.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Yeah, so I guess there's a bunch of layers to it.
Does Dion Be and his dad make you want to
stay away?
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Now?
Speaker 4 (26:30):
Because I mean Dion was that way as a player
and he was an all time great. Now the difference
is you could be this huge, crazy personality, especially like
Dion was in college, and play corner or play wide
receiver and is what it is a little different quarterback.
So that that is the and I've said this for
a while on the podcast, I think the hard thing
(26:52):
for scouts is going to be is to truly get
the information when you go into that program, right, because like,
how are you gonna dig on what happened on social media? Right?
Who's gonna It's not like Dion's gonna bad mouth them?
And again why they bad mouth them? I don't think
there's nothing bad, but you just nitpick these top guys.
(27:13):
So part of getting I would say Shador is obviously
getting the package of his dad, which is a positive
because of the lineage, the name, how serious they take football.
But there's also like this other element to it which
I don't know. I was thinking about it last night,
Like there's no question like can the kid handle money? Well,
he's grown up rich, you know. I mean's like he's
(27:36):
grown up around it, so that want to face him?
It's more and does he get along with his teammates?
I would say that's the biggest question mark beside like
his brother in Travis, what's he like to the random
offensive lineman? And that's really what they got to dig on,
which could be the difference of him and Carson Beck. Right,
why one team chooses one guy over another?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Can't camp? I'm like Dion tried to say, was because
he was trying to get his buddy a big play.
Why else would you throw the ball with a minute
and a half to go the other team having one
time out unless you're trying to pad your stats.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
Yeah, you know in a game like that, it's hard.
I think the time management in college football we've nitpicked
the NFL, which can be bad. It's really bad in
college football that's obviously insane. You could argue the North
Dakota State coach not calling timeouts before the two minute warning,
(28:35):
which is a new rule. They have a two minute
warning recently in college football. So these rules ever changing.
But yeah, the Dion thing, they got pretty lucky. But
at the end of the day, once they punted all
the way down there and they didn't have any timeouts,
it was going to be really hard North Dakota State.
I was pretty impressed, right to hang with those athletes,
(28:56):
especially on the outside early on, it's like, how are
they ever going to get a stop? That's an impressive program.
I'm gonna say. I thought that was a pretty good
win for Colorado, you know, I really did, because it
could have easily got the other way. They showed a
little guts. But now it gets real. I mean, on
the road at night in Nebraska. I think the big
question mark Doug because Shad or these quarterbacks, like, I'm
(29:18):
not worried about as long as he stays healthy, he's
gonna go high. Is I think Travis Hunter is one
of the more fascinating prospects really of my adult life.
You know, he's a corner wide receiver. He plays every snap.
The NFL would love him to play corner because it's
much harder to find top ten corners than it is
top wide receivers. But how is he gonna do?
Speaker 3 (29:39):
You know?
Speaker 4 (29:39):
In the Big twelve? Arizona's got a guy that many
of you as a top ten player. Oklahoma State has
a really good kind of small, shifty wide receiver. I'm
sure there are other receivers that are going to emerge
in the Big twelve. You're gonna want him on that guy.
But he's such a dynamic wide receiver. Can he play
every snap against Oklahoma State against Utah, against Arizona, against
(30:03):
Kansas State. It's going to be fascinating to watch. I
know he's in great shape, but he's like the college
OTAWNI right now.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Yeah, well, last year he wore down, So we'll sit,
we'll send then you know, we'll see if he doesn't
wear down, right, I mean, and if you remember, I'm
trying to think which which team it was. It just
targeted him at the end of the game.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
And Stamford remember Camford corner, Yes.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
And he's through him every time, even though he's the
best player, just to wear him out, and it worked.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
And think about the PAC twelve good wide receivers, Big
twelve good wide receivers. It's even if the guy is
not a top ten pick, if he's just like a
fourth rounder. I mean, that's a long day at the.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Office, no question about it. John Middalcoff joining US three
and out as the podcast Niners get a Yuk. My
point was, I don't think that changes them all that much.
I think Trent Williams is a much bigger and more
important get for them. Where are you and Ayuk and
his level of importance in comparison to Trump Williams.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Yeah, well, I mean, what an exhausting saga. As Schefter said,
the same contract have been on the table for three
weeks of Lynch and Kyle ready to jump off a
bridge every press conference at the fifty three man cut down,
and I watched a decent amount of them. You know,
gms are happy. The forty Niners look like they just
got hit by a bus. And I think they were
(31:19):
ready to start finding him, you know, and that's Brandon Aiyuk.
They already tried to trade him, he said, No, obviously, Trent,
I would imagine he's asking for you know, sixty seventy
million dollars right now, and the forty nine ers have
gone back and forth. He hasn't kind of been over
a table. But he's also thirty five, thirty six years old.
(31:42):
You know, it's it's it's a tough spot. But they
can't operate without him, and they won't operate without him.
So I would imagine, wouldn't shock me before the game's
kickoff on Saturday. You know, something gets done in the
next I don't know, eighteen hours because you the other
thing is older player, big guy. You want to get
him in cardio shape. That first game against the Jets.
(32:03):
A lot of question marks with the Jets. One thing
we don't question even with Reddick m i A. They
do have a lot of bodies up front that can
run fast. So you just not practice. I don't know
what he's been doing. I'm sure he's been working out,
but there's a big difference between running some gassers with
a trainer and you know, repping against Nick Bosa and
Leonard Floyd.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
Every day in practice.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
No question about it, none at all. Okay, give me
some give me some buzz you're hearing from Run the League.
There there have been some comments that the Jets locker
room is still a mess. What are you hearing about
the state of the Jets heading end of the season.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
I think there's a lot of people wondering what this
is going to look like. I texted someone in the
middle of camp that was around them a lot, and
I said, how does Rogers look? And He's like, to
be honest, it's impossible to tell. BB's training camps are
a joke, even though Rod like way more physical, well
relative to the modern day football, but it's he's not
(33:06):
getting tested. So I think the question mark with him
is specifically going to be how he moves. Everyone's like
he still spinds it well, Dan Marino sixty five still
spins it like Aaronrod is gonna be able to spin
it as long as he has a right arm. To me,
the question mark's going to be movement. And let's face it, like,
is a son Reddick just going to show up next
week or is he not? Because if he doesn't, like
(33:30):
that's kind of a big deal. They lost the pass
rusher to the Eagles. They traded for him to replace him,
and if he just truly just continues to hold out,
that is a big loss. Even though they quote unquote
have never had him like they were banking on this
guy to help out and give them I don't know
nine to eleven facts. So that's if he doesn't play
(33:51):
against the forty nine ers, that's a problem. But it
all hinges on Rogers. And does he look like a
forty year old guy coming up in Achilles or does
he look like you know, he still looks pretty good.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
You know.
Speaker 4 (34:02):
I don't know what I've seen on NFL Network, which
is as the only clips you've seen of him playing,
because he didn't playing into the preseason games. It looks
like he's kind of half ass in it. But I
don't know if that's just he's kind of taking it
easy or that's his new speed. You know, And we
have recent memory, and all these guys are different. You
and I have talked about this. Breeze fell off a cliff,
(34:24):
Roethlisberger fell off a cliff, Manning fell off the cliff. Now,
all those guys, it was their arm, you know, Rogers
not going to be his arm. But his movement was
such a huge part of his greatness that he would
just wouldn't be the same player. And the forty nine ers,
like he goes outside Fred Warner's chasing him. He used
to be able to at least extend it for a
second or two. Now it's gonna be fascinating to watch
(34:47):
because if that's gone. I couldn't like the Jets as
much as I mean, they have better betting odds than
the Bils. I get the Bills lost some players, but
I couldn't pick the Chips before Week one over the fields,
could you.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
No?
Speaker 3 (35:01):
In no way I could have picked the Jets over
the Bills in Week one, not at all. I want
to ask you about Dak, and you know, I mean
I feel like they're in that relationship of convenience right.
It's like, look, Dak's good, he's a good quarterback, he's
a good guy to win double digit games? Is he
(35:22):
gonna win the Super Bowl?
Speaker 5 (35:23):
And know?
Speaker 3 (35:24):
How do I know? I have enough data now to
tell me like could you I guess? But you know,
Niner game last year, Packer game, I mean nine game
two years ago, Packer game last year is like it
is what it is. But the Cowboys sitting there going like, yeah,
you know, like we don't have Dak, then we got
to go start this process over with we got it,
you know, it's like a dating thing. You know, we
(35:44):
had the holidays coming up, and we gotta have a
relationship before the holidays. It feels like more of a
relationship of convenience than it is. Hey, we're still super
into each other.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
Well, I think the worst place to be stuck in
is where the Dolphins are. They have a guy who's
a credible starting quarterback but can't win big games, and
it feels like he's got no chance in the playoffs.
Dak to me, is like on that golf level. And
I know Goff's had won playoff games his team's and
he's become a really good player. We could you know,
(36:15):
some people might take golf over Dak, but I think
Dak can win playoff games. But what I know he
can do is go on the road and beat the Eagles, right,
go on the road or at home in December and
win a big game. So to me, there's value in that.
And that's why I think the Cowboys are in such
a predicament. Like at the end of the day, the
Cowboys would have gladly given him what they gave to us, Right,
(36:37):
they give him that contract and Herbie Dak wants probably
fifteen to twenty percent more than Trevor Lawrence just got.
And then that's where it gets difficult. And this is
what is you know, this is a guy over thirty.
This is his fourth contract or I guess this would
be his third contract because he franchised. You know, he's
played out on you know, nine ten years of contracts.
(36:58):
So basically you're just taking it in from year eleven
to fifteen at just huge premiums. And that's where you
get nervous. But what else are they going to do? Doug?
I mean they tried to and I don't blame Jerry
tried to strike a little oil with Trey Lance. I
mean the guy, he's one of the worst quarterbacks on
a roster and currently so they're kind of sucked.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
There were people, there were people last year when they
traded from like oh got our next starting quarterback? Like no,
do you think San Francisco would give up on him?
And they thought he was any good?
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Well, think about this, Doug. And this is not to
beat up Trey Lance. It was a weird twenty twenty year.
He clearly shouldn't have been drafted anywhere in the first
He should have been like a fifth round pick. But
Mike McCarthy, who I'm actually gonna start pivoting on Mike
McCarthy because everyone's anti Mike McCarthy's proven to be pretty good,
right he wins regular season games, he can coach the quarterback,
(37:54):
and he can call offense. But he's good quarterbacks. Kyle
Shanahan's good quarterbacks and this guy can't play. So I
think that that clearly is scrapped. I mean, the only
reason the Cowboys kept him is because they traded for
a salary that's pretty large. They have to pay him
no matter what. But I think they're just kind of
stuck with Dak. And at the end of the day,
you know, even if Dak they don't sign an extension
(38:15):
during the season, he makes it the free agency. If
Jerry wants keeping, he's going to keep him because who
leaves the Cowboys if the money's the same. And it's
very hard for these other teams to offer as much
money because Dallas no state income tax. Even if the
Vegas Vegas gets involved, you're telling me you're gonna go
to the Raiders over the Cowboys. I mean, come on,
Dak's not that dumb.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
No, he's not. He's not. He's definitely not that dumb
Who is the team that we're not talking about? You
and I talk about this every week. Okay, we're getting
closer and closer. Who's the one? Who's this year's Houston
Texans the surprise?
Speaker 2 (38:52):
You know?
Speaker 3 (38:52):
I go.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
I've gone back and forth on these two teams. I
think the AFC Nor is gonna be worse. But they
got three teams in and I think, you know, the
Ravens got a lot of question marks, bangles help and
just their contract situations. The Browns, I mean, their quarterback
just might not be any good. I do think one
of these two teams, A lot of people push back.
Chargers don't have enough talent, okay, but their coach always wins.
(39:17):
And the Broncos. I don't know which two it is,
but I or which one it is out of those two,
but I think one of those two teams gonna make
the playoffs. I would lean the Broncos. He's had a
year now to kind of build up this roster. Maybe
the Chargers more equipped next year, but I think we're
gonna see two teams out of the AFC West. I mean,
think about it. If you remove Andy Reid, I mean
(39:38):
Sean Payton, And if you just rank coaches in the AFC,
Sean Payton and Mike tom Or and Jim Harbon here
at the top of the lift. So we say it
all the time. Coach quarterback, we got Jim Harbond justin Herberts,
I think bo Nick is a pretty good bet for
Rookie of the Year. So if you think he's gonna
have a good season relative to a rookie, I think
(39:58):
the Broncos. They won a game. We talked about the
Broncos rightfully, so like they were like a four or
five win team because that's seventy point game six out
in their mind. But they actually weren't as bad as
you think. And now he likes the quarterback and he
likes the team. I'm tempted to take the Broncos. You
can get him six to one on Dragoncons. Doock just
to make the playoffs. I'm talking sevent seed.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
He's the one and only John Middlkoff. Johnny can't wait
for the next pod. Enjoy the weekend of college football
like this is this is pretty much heaven right Like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday,
all games and then we get more next week Oh
so good.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
Hey, listen, say what you want about primetime, and he's
done some crazy things and the treatment of the guy
on the way out was pretty embarrassing. But if I
would have told you two years ago, North Dakota State
and Colorado would have been the primetime night game to
kind of kick off Week one, and most people had
that on their television, you know, that game would have
(41:01):
been put on True TV at nine thirty kickoffs. So
I that was fun last night. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
I did too, and I'll watch when they played Nebraska
and I'll keep watching. Yeah, I mean, I don't think
for entertainment, it's given us something great. The question becomes
and he's I don't feel like he's building a program there.
I feel like he's building a messle Do.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
You think the Big twelve is going to uh be
tough on him? Because the PAC twelve was.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
Well, remember the PAC twelve that was like the best
of Pact.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
It was a great year.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
And I don't think the Big twelves as talented. I
don't think there's there's layups in the league. But like,
look they lost to Stanford, who was kind of a
layup in the league. I think they're going to be better.
I think where they're going to suffer as he's next
to on the road Nebraska on the road in Colorado State.
I think they're a better team with a harder schedule
(41:57):
in the preseason.
Speaker 4 (41:59):
I would, And that Nebraska game obviously is a Remember
last year the quarterback was like me or you back there.
This young guy Riola is just solid at night. That
place is going to be called bananas.
Speaker 2 (42:09):
Correct?
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Correct? John Middlecoll three NOWS Podcast. Johnny, thanks so much
for joining us.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
See Doug a good week.
