Colin points out the major issue that has plagued the Jets over the years and why that won't change after trading for WR Davante Adams. He looks at the 3 rookie QBs one-third of the way into the season and why it's already clear they are franchise cornerstone players. He talks to Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt about Ohio State coming up short against another top-5 team and where USC is headed after another loss under head coach Lincoln Riley

This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
We get a show today Wednesday, live in Los Angeles.
It's the Herd. Dave Roberts, Dodger manager, stops five biggest
game of the year for the Dodgers and the mess.
We're in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever you may
be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making
us part of your day. One hour from now, Joel
Kladoff the biggest college football weekend of the season. Jmax,

(00:52):
you know this time every four years, we get the Olympics, joyful,
the world come. We love that, joyful, and a presidential
election that's not as joyful. That creates anxiety for a
lot of people. Right, So today I want to talk
about the value of repetition, the value of consistency. I

(01:18):
tell my kids this all the time. If you got
to go to bed within an hour the same time
every night, pick the hour ten thirty, you got to
go to bed by nine thirty, ten thirty or eleven thirty. Consistency.
I've seen this my whole life. Inconsistent people that do
not create habits, anxiety gets ramped up and they're a

(01:43):
chaotic person. So everybody's going to have chaotic times. There's
going to be anxiety in all of our lives. Repetition
is underrated, Consistency is underrated. You don't have to win
every day. And I'm watching the New York Jets and
Woody Johnson, the owner who runs through coaches. Listen to

(02:05):
the word he uses when asked about all the moves
you want to bring a lot of change this week?
Do you just have to go with your instinct and
what's the best best thing to build a team and
build a winning team and build the most importantly, build
a culture. Are you still optimistic that this season is selvage? Well,

(02:28):
got to check. You can add the words after that.
We're gonna We're gonna do really well. We want to
bring a lot of change. That's all the Jets are
is change. He thinks change will create culture. The opposite
is true repetition, not a need to win every day

(02:50):
on the internet. The winning is franchised in New York
and it's not close. Is the New York Yankees and
the Steinbrenners have owned Men the Family since the early seventies,
and Brian Cashman has been the GM and all the
noise on the interweb and talk radio in New York
has fired Brian Cashman, longest tenured Yankee GM ever ninety

(03:15):
eight until today. Aaron Boone, you want him fired after
every losing streak year seven as a manager. Even John
Carlos Stanton and Aaron Judge have been the power hitters
for what the last seven eight years. Garrett Cole new guy,
Not really, He's been their ace for five years. I
mean they'll occasionally bring on a flashy star, Jazz Chisholmer,

(03:35):
Juan Soto, but the Yankees are about culture and stability,
not needing to win every single weekend. I mean, the Jets,
had they beaten Robert Sally got fired, had he won
Monday night, and I think they would have won with
him as a coach because the defense wasn't good. They'd
have been in first place. Woody Johnson thinks the answer

(03:58):
is change. God, I mean, look at the Dodgers, Dave
Roberts on our show today, nine seasons. Dodgers fans constantly
complaining about him. But Mark Walter the owner nine years,
Andrew Friedman the GM nine years, Clayton Kershaw forever. I mean,
they'll go buy new players. Lon Rosen's been around the

(04:20):
organization as a vice president forever. Same voices, same people,
same intellect, same strategy, year after year after year. And
Woody Johnson wants change, so he fires his best coach
on the staff, and what do you know, The defense
has leaks. Change is not the answer. I mean, it'd

(04:41):
be one thing if the Jets were hopeless, but they're
the best two to four team in the league. They're
defensive personnel is excellent. They have a running back who's
a star. They finally used him, Aaron's talented. Change is
not what they need. Poorly run franchises, that's always the answer.
But you know, you know, franchises that don't make big

(05:03):
sweeping changes. Brady and Belichick, the Yankees don't, the Dodgers don't,
the Warriors don't. They finally moved off Clay finally passed
his prime. Finally, but it's still Steph and Draymond. It's
still Steve Kerr. The GM left on his own, or
they would have kept him same ownership. Kansas City Chiefs.

(05:25):
They don't make big radical changes. I mean it's the Jets.
I mean the franchise. It's so obvious. The franchises that
constantly make changes in the NFL, Carolina Jets, Raiders, Browns,
how they do it. It's just insane to me. You
know what the Jets have become. They've become Kramer on Seinfeld.

(05:46):
They break through the door every week with a new idea.
And while he was very, very entertaining, Kramer was known
as the crazy one. Change isn't the answer in a
league that's fluid. It could be tech, it could be politics,
it could be sports. Repetition, underrated, don't worry about winning,

(06:12):
Twitter or the press conference. Yankees here they are again
looking right at another World Series opportunity. It's amazing. We
want change, Okay, Kramer whatever, new idea every day. So
I'm reading a story here this morning. It's very excited.
You know, I love Chicago. Caleb Williams has he finally

(06:35):
broken the Bears seventy five year curse. So since the
beginning of the AFL NFL merger nineteen sixty seven, they've
drafted a lot of quarterbacks in the first round. Trubisky
and Rex Grossman and all these guys. None of them
are really panned out. I mean McMahon did sort of.
But I was looking at the NFL standings this morning.
The first place teams. AFC East Best Quarterback leads Josh Allen,

(07:02):
AFC North Best Quarterback, Lamar Jackson leads AFC South. Best
Quarterback leads c J. Stroud, AFC West Best Quarterback leads
Patrick Mahomes NFC East. I'm sorry, Jaden Daniels throws the
ball better than Dak, moves better than Dak, doesn't make
the turnovers of Jalen Hurts. He's the best quarterback. Sam

(07:24):
Donald's playing like the best quarterback, although I think Golf
or Jordan Love are, but Sam Donald's playing like the
best quarterback. He'd be the highest MVP vote getterer in
that division as of today. As a quarterback. Kirk Cousins
leads his division. And by the way, I think Matt
Stafford's better than Pretty Brock. Pretty's good, so pretty simple.

(07:45):
Quarter one third through the regular season, we already see
who leads the division, the best quarterback in the division,
or a really good quarterback playing the best in division.
That's it. And I think six games in a career
is a quarter. You're gonna see two things. Red flags,
you see those immediately red flags or really excellent traits.

(08:07):
Take Jaden Daniels. I mean Jaden Daniels supermobile, web of average,
really accurate. The coaches loved Jaden Daniels at LSU. They
could not stop complimenting it him in camp. Remember that
in camp, you never hear a coach and a coordinator
gush over a rookie quarterback. They're always like, be patient,

(08:28):
it takes time. They were like, this kid's amazing. He's amazing.
Everybody loves him. I've seen enough Jaden Daniels. I don't
see any red flags. I see nothing but excellent traits.
He's a franchise quarterback. Now, it may take a while.
Baker Mayfield and Sam Donald, Baker wasn't mature enough for

(08:49):
the tire fire known as the Cleveland Browns. He's more
mature now, and Sam Donald needed a great offensive coach.
Kevin O'Connell. The Jets couldn't provide that his mechanical flaws.
And I don't think either of those guys qualify as
good as Caleb Williams. But my point is six games
is enough. Look at I look at bow Knicks. He

(09:10):
is Drew Brees accurate. He'll get in Sean Payton's face.
He's mobile. Drew Brees was mobile early in his career,
much more than later in his career. I look at
bow Knicks. Does he have a big arm? No, Breeze
didn't throw it deep well, especially in the latter part
of his career. Bow Knicks didn't have a big arm.
He got a lower ceiling. He's smaller than Look at
Lamar Jackson. He is not as twitchy, but he's super mobile,

(09:32):
much more mobile than you think, accurate, and he's a leader,
not a follower. And he, by the way, Caleb's got
more talent. And Jayden Daniels has more talent that Denver roster.
Vegas had him over under his a five win team,
So he's having to elevate in a division with Herbert
and Mahomes having to elevate a really average roster. And
then there's Caleb Williams. He just keeps getting better every week,

(09:58):
big arm moves exceed eatingly well, very good with the media.
I mean I watched Caleb Williams. It was funny. Justin
Fields in Chicago and in Pittsburgh, it's always one step
forward and two steps back, back to back games in Pittsburgh,
Justin Field's passer rating and completion percentage of Dippt. It's
not that way with Caleb Williams. Every week passer rating

(10:19):
goes up, completion percentage goes up. You see ascension, not
one step forward two steps back. So with Justin Fields
you can buy into it, but it's hype even now
in Pittsburgh. He has a winning record, and Mike Tomlin's like, yeah,
I think I'm gonna try Russell Wilson. So six games in,
I think you can say it. The Bears solve their

(10:40):
seventy five year drought.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
This is it.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
This is what it looks like. Really talented getting better,
appears to take the coaching a feel for the pocket. Washington.
I grew up, Washington had a different name and they
were dominant. Joe Gibbson before that, George Allen, Jayden Daniels
is good. This is what a franchise quarterback looks like.
Bow Nicks. Yes, he's he doesn't run around like Jayden

(11:03):
Daniels or Caleb, but he is athletic. He doesn't have
the big arm of Caleb. He's not as good as Caleb,
but it looks like a franchise quarterback to me. And
it didn't take me along with Herbert or Burrow or
c J. Stroud either. Six games is enough to have
certain declarations. Matt Hasselbeck this week on why Caleb Williams
in Chicago was having the early success.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
He's throwing on time, in rhythm with the quick game,
and that's very important because you're avoiding sacks, you're getting
the ball out of your hands into the hands of
the athletes. But then where he's exceptional is when plays
take a little bit longer and you're throwing the ball
down field. His scramble ability is translating from the college
game to the pro game, and that doesn't always happen

(11:45):
with guys. So I think the combination of obviously they're
playing good around him playing well, but the quick game
is working, and then the exceptional explosive plays that you
saw at SC they're still there as well.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Good stuff. Matt Hasselbeck joining us in studio. Joel Klatt
forty five minutes from now, Dave Roberts a couple of
hours from now. Biggest game of the year for the
Mets and the Dodgers. Can't wait for that. And it
is interesting. I'll go back to my initial rant on
Woodie Johnson. It is fascinating when you watch poorly run
businesses think the answer is sweeping change. That's not the

(12:20):
answer for problems. Just think, are you a little bit
to having some anxiety here over the presidential election? If
you want to alleviate some of that, get up at
the same time, go to the bed at the same time,
have a steady life. It's amazing. It just brings all
the anxiety down. That's what the Jets need. It'd be

(12:40):
nice if the Jets were only chaotic every four years,
like our politics. J Mac, I know, I know what
you're saying. I know you're rolling your eyes because you
live a crazy lifestyle. You're out there on the beach,
I'm doing crazy things. It's interesting.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
So that little rant about quarterbacks six games in and yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
For the true ones, for the really great ones, you
pretty much sold.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
Are you also the kind of guy who goes on
one date with a woman and oh, that's the one.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
She's the one. I know after a date eight minutes
I knew I was gonna marry Anne eight minutes in.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (13:12):
Interesting. I need to see more from these quarterbacks. Just
like I'm not sold on the first date. People can
fake the funk on a date. Colin, Come on, you
could act like who you think, well they want you
to be.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
Yeah, the good gms don't get fooled on that date.
The bad gms do.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
I do know.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Caleb Williams beat up some real, real sad team. You'll
say to yourself, what about Baker and Darnold. I don't
think they're nearly as talented as Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams.
They they're not. No, no, God no. Jayden Daniels has
had MVP. It's gonna be an MVP multiple times. Lamar
Jackson's an MVP multiple times. Jayden Daniels is Lamar is
Lamar Jackson. That's what you're watching, folks, potentially, Yeah, I

(13:52):
mean that I watched him play last weekend. That's what
you're watching. Again. You can have a reboot to your
career Sam and Baker, but those are flawed. Baker's smaller
than you want. Sam can be more reckless than you want.
I don't see that with Jaden Bow or Caleb. I
don't think. When I watched Jaden Daniels and Lamar Jackson

(14:13):
play last week, I'm convinced Big Stage. Is he as
good as Lamar? No, he's not. Lamar is one of
the top three guys in the planet doing that. But
I see all the quality traits, footwork, doesn't panic, moves
well accurate. I think he's better than Lamar. In the
pocket is a rookie. I think Lamar has become very good,
but it took him a couple of years. That's okay,

(14:33):
But I don't six. I always use this acknology when
you watch The Voice or American Idol, when you w
I don't know anything about music. I like it, but
I don't know anything about it. I'm a novice. I
could listen to somebody for thirty seconds and go hack
lounge singer star. It didn't take much for Kerrie Underwood.
Two notes. You're like, yep, that's gonna sell. That's gonna
sell records. It doesn't take that long. Tell me all

(14:56):
the slow developing. You could say, well, Brady Brady was
not that slow developing. First year he started, he won
a super Bowl. It wasn't that slow developed Lamar. He
was an MVP the first year he started. This idea
justin Herbert's first game when he got inserted into the
game against Mahomes. By the end of the game, we
were all saying, Holy hell, he's good. It doesn't take

(15:16):
long to see great. It takes a while to figure
out good. But you can see awful or you can
see great. You see traits or red flags really fast.
I like this glass half full Colum to start a Wednesday.
That's it's very positive. I don't want to be negative.
Guy God anxiety in America. I want to settle everybody's

(15:38):
nerves down.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern non a em Pacific.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
So Jerry Jones, I want to talk about the Jets
because i'm i'm, i'm I have made a new Uh.
It's not a New Year's resolution because it's October. It's
an October resolution more positivity. We live in a very
negative world. So Jerry Jones says, the cow Boys will
not be active at the NFL trade deadline. So the
ship is sinking and Jerry's got no interest giving anybody

(16:06):
a life preserver. So the Jets are two and four,
but again, I think they're gonna go on a big
winning streak here. They have an excellent running back and
he just came off his best game. I think their
defensive personnel is good. Devonte Adams isn't gonna hurt the team.
They have two good receivers, and I think they start
playing quarterbacks they can beat. So I think the Jets
are okay, okay, and they went and made a move

(16:31):
to get Devonte Adams. They're acknowledging we need some more
juice here. The Jets point differential and there's no quit.
When you watch the Jets, they play their ass off.
There's no quit. They're playing their butts off. Their point
differential at two and four is plus five. Dallas has
no run game none. Their defense has holes all over it.

(16:54):
Their point differential is minus forty two. They're getting holes.
They're getting blown out at home, and they don't want
to make any moves. So you can roll your eyes
at the Jets. But they didn't spend any money, did
Dallas in free agency. They're not making moves here. So
it's not a lame duck coach, it's a lame duck team.
Dallas isn't a super Bowl team. I don't think the

(17:16):
Jets are. But Garrett Wilson, DeVante Adams, Aaron Rodgers, Bresee
Hall old line's okay, good defense. There's some fight in
the Jets. The Jets are the best two and four
team in the league, and they're going to beat Pittsburgh
this weekend. Aaron's not going to play, you know he
whether he points at Mike Williams or not. Aaron's got
to play better. And so I think Jerry is being

(17:40):
intellectually dishonest. And I think he was intellectually dishonest a
couple days ago when he picked on these radio hosts
who pushed back on Jerry on Dallas Radio. There was
a lot of criticism that you guys didn't add, didn't spend,
and don't add and don't spend and are not aggressive enough.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Oh I remember those criticisms very well. Okay, so what
are they playing out to be accurate? What's your point?
What's your point now? If you think I'm interested on
a phone call with you over a radio and sitting
here and throwing all the good at with the dishwater.

(18:16):
You have got to be smoking something over there this morning.
This is not your job. Your job is to let
me go over all the reasons that I did something
and I'm sorry that I did it. That's not your job.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Well my job is that a job?

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Or I'll get another. I'll get somebody else to ask
these questions. Man.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Yeah, well it is actually a radio person's job to
Sometimes we have to make people uncomfortable. I mean, you
see Clatt every week on the show. I have to
push back and with that, the voice of college football
at Fox Sports, Joel Clatt off the craziest weekend in
college football. Oh wow, it was glorious. It's a great weekend,
wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
Man?

Speaker 1 (18:54):
I sat and watched start to end. Yeah, I saw.
I saw your TikTok or whatever through out there at
half of that USC game, whatever you put out there.
It really no wonder You're you're taking shots at J
Mack this week. You had to. You had to pump
yourself up after that. I mean you took a huge
l on that one on the Lincoln Riley. Yeah, I'm

(19:17):
not going to get into it. We're all interesting. Interesting,
it should be no interesting. As I was doing it
very confidently, my friend very confidently. My friend Dane was
laughing his butt off because I kept and he's like,
you know, if they lose, and I said, I know,
either way, it's fantastic. Sometimes being smug has its benefits. Well,

(19:39):
you were definitely smug.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
All right.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
I don't know if it has its benefits, but that's okay.
So let's go to Oregon. Ohio State. Okay, great game.
Oh So my take was if they'd have played in
a neutral field, if they play in Columbus, Ohio State
is gonna win. Asking kids to go into Eugene or
Columbus or Georgia or Austin and play a flawless game.

(20:03):
I had said, they're gonna have delay a game penalties,
They're gonna have penalies, and they did. I'm like, Ohio
State's great. These Remember only two of Sabans Natties were undefeated.
Those losses. You go on the road. I look at
Ohio State. I thought they played by and large in
that environment against the great team. Really well, yeah, I
thought both teams played like listen, Oregon just played better. Yeah, Yeah,

(20:27):
I think that that's that's a fair statement. And Oregon
did things that we didn't see early in the season,
and they've corrected a lot of these things that we
lamited by the way you and I on this show. Yes,
early in the year we talked about their offensive line
not playing very well. Guess what, they haven't given up
a sack in four weeks. So that's all of a
sudden changed and turned around. Evan Stewart was nowhere to
be found. He goes seven for forty three. I mean,

(20:50):
Dylan Gabriel was was a lot of short passing point
guard distribute eight plays of twenty five or more yards.
I mean like they played phenomenal and in a lot
of ways really probably should have been ranked number one
in the country if it weren't for the fact that
Texas has just been totally dominant in their season so
far and were in Red River against Oklahoma. So that's

(21:12):
the Oregon side, and I think on the Ohio State
side is frustration. The frustration being that they felt like
they put themselves in a position to win the game
and didn't and didn't win the game and didn't execute
down the stretch. And I know it's a frustration. I
know it's a frustration for Ryan. And the thing that
I'm actually most perplexed about about the Ohio State performance

(21:35):
was the fact that the defense gave up so many
big plays. Was because that was the exact thing that
they tried to change and did change last season. Right,
do you remember in twenty two late in twenty two
when Michigan torched them for big plays, then they still
got into the playoff and Georgia torched them for big plays.

(21:56):
Both of those teams they went for eight yards or
more play in those two games. Since then, Ohio State
had really locked people up as far as the explosive
plays go defensively, and last year they didn't have a
game in which their defense gave up over five yards
per play, not one game. You know what Oregon did
Saturday night eight and a half seven plus yards per

(22:18):
play because of the explosives, and so seeing that rear
its head again for Ohio State, I think that was
the most worrisome aspect for the Buckeyes moving forward. Yeah,
I think these are really really I think Texas is
the best team. Ohio State looks like physically the second
best team, But I think Oregon's outstanding. I will say
this that you know, in these top five matchups, and

(22:40):
we've seen this in our life. I remember seeing it
with the Sacramento Kings. You thought to yourself, they're too
damn good not to win a championship, and they never did,
and the window closed. Seahawks won a title, but it
looked like a dynasty. Everybody was like twenty five years old.
And then it closed really quickly. And so when you
get Buffalo and Baltimore, we keep saying m and Josh

(23:00):
are too good not to win Super Bowls, and they
keep losing earlier than we think. In the players, there's
a lot of teams like this. Florida State should have
won more national championships under Bobby Bowden, and the Braves
should have won more World Series, you know when they
were winning all those dis Ryan day, you're close, you
play the part, you look good. You're two and six
against top five teams. Generally, when you don't win them,

(23:22):
there's something there that's missing. It may not be I
don't know. Okay, I'm going to follow on this. Okay,
you just don't buy that. I don't because of the
history of the sport. Now, maybe if we got into
the specifics of what's going on with Ohio State, you know,
but the fact of the matter is is he's putting
himself and his team in position, you know, and there's

(23:44):
something to be said for that. And then the history
of the sport would suggest that guys don't win championships
in their first six years as head coaches. Oh that's fair, right,
I mean, I mean, the only guys that have done that.
I'm trying to think Switzer won one or if you remember,
he was given him a sports car, so give me
another one. That's a good one. Stoops one one in

(24:06):
his second year he did. But again, that's right, he did,
and he had kind of brought them back, remember from
the John Blake era. But but my point is is
that it's a bit of an anomaly. Even Saban took
a long time and his best years were fifty plus,
you know, in terms of his age, and Osborne took
I think it was seventeen years now or even more.
Dabo Sweeney Dalla was ten years Kirby's six years. So

(24:32):
I think that Ryan, I think, will win a championship.
And if he does so in this season or even
moving forward, that's basically right in line with what college
football I believe there has been historically. I believe Ohio
State and Oregon will play again. Ohio State will win
in Ohio State will play Texas for the national championship.

(24:53):
I thought Tennessee's offense worries me. I love their defense.
Tennessee's my dark horse to win it. Their quarterback is now,
he's regressed, unfortunately for him as a young player. Okay,
we've got a lot of stuff to talk, and let's
do it. I may at the end of this segment
spend a couple of seconds on Lincoln Riley. Let's go
to Georgia Texas. So, okay, you lose, really you lost

(25:16):
the first half to Alabama. You just played, you got overwelled.
Yeah again it happens again in a great environment like
you you know. Yeah, this isn't the NFL where the
points spread difference is one with veteran quarterbacks. Sorry, Drew
Brees was okay playing in Atlanta. Okay, I I test.

(25:37):
Georgia does not look as powerful on the old line. Correct,
Texas looks like the most powerful team on the old line.
Carson Beck the kid throws dimes. Let's not say don't
quite have the same feeling I did last year, but
he's still very good. Yeah, I test tells me Texas
is what Georgia was for about a four year period.
They look bigger and stronger, they're more complete of a team. Okay,

(26:01):
Georgia is still an elite team, there's no doubt. But
there are things that Beck is having to overcome, like
an offensive line that is not completely dominant, a run
game that is not totally healthy. In three of their
six games this year, they've averaged under four yards per carry. Wow,
and so like that's not going to Here's what that
does in reality, What that does is it forces you

(26:22):
into a position as an offense and more specifically as
a quarterback where you're having to throw the football when
you have to versus when you want to see when
you win the line of scrimmage and when you own
the game in the tempo of the game. As an
offensive line, Yeah, your quarterback gets to throw the ball
because he wants to r the offense. In general, play action, pass,
second and short. You can really put defenders in conflict

(26:44):
based on what you're doing in the backfield versus Hey, Carson,
you have to throw the football or else, we're not
going to move the ball down the field. Now, he
did it very well because he's a talented guy. So
he throws for over four hundred yards last week. But
remember now they're a thirty point favorite, win by ten
over Mississippi State. Missippi State is a one win team.
So something is not right with Georgia. As opposed to

(27:07):
what it was the last few years. Kentucky's D line
pushed them around the field. I watched that game that
was like, that was an eye opener. It's like, this
isn't like a fluke. It's like Kentucky's stronger than you
are upfront defensive line against your O line. And on
the flip side, for Texas, you're exactly right. I think
this is the best offensive line in college football. They're
the most experience in particular of the real contenders. A

(27:30):
lot of these guys for Texas have played for three
straight years together. You see, here's what's going on in
college football, Colin. It's yes, about talent acquisition, but what's
becoming more important than talent acquisition talent retention. Yes, you've
got to recruit not your future players, but your current players.

(27:53):
Because getting your current players to stay in your program,
delivers continuity and experience in all that content and experience
allows you to perform at your best in the biggest moments.
And that's what we're seeing from Texas. On the offensive line,
they are owning the game really in the tempo of
the game, and in large party, they have been able

(28:14):
to protect their defense as well, which allows them to
be the number one scoring offense in the country and
the number one scoring defense in the country. So they're
a complete team. This is what we normally saw from
Georgia over the last three years, and now that's what
we're seeing from Sark on the Texas side.

Speaker 1 (28:38):
So as I walk around California recording videos of myself, yeah, no,
people come up. There's a lot of USC jerseys in
this town. It's a USC football town, a lot of
USC and they come up and people lament the state.
And it's amazing how often I think we need a

(28:58):
new coach. Oh my gosh, hear it all the time.
Oh yeah, I've been hearing about this about Dave Roberts
of the Dodgers, give me the playoffs. I've been hearing
this for seven years, Like Dave's pretty good. Well, look
at all the coaches the Lakers go through. Yeah, you
don't want to be the Jets or the Raiders. I mean,
just so, here's my take. I overvalued. I thought they'd
beat Minnesota, and I thought the Penn State game LSU
games were go either way games. They won one, they

(29:19):
lost one, and they could they could have lost LSU,
they could have beaten Penn State.

Speaker 3 (29:22):
Yea.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
So my take is you just said something that's trill smart.
It's player retention the criticism. I sometimes I wish Lincoln
would bark a little more and be a little more insertive.
He's a little stoic and intellectual, cerebral. But in this
world we live in now of player retention, you can't
dog your players too much or they'll go you gotta

(29:43):
be you gotta be a little NFL, you gotta be
a little player friendly. I mean, Andy Reid barks, his
players love him, yes, And I think Lincoln big picture
knows this is a really really young offense. You know
what it is? What Texas two years ago that's what
USC is right. Say that again, USC is at a

(30:06):
point that Sark was two years ago. Remember when Sark
would always lose those close games. Remember it's like, oh,
they could have beat or should have beat Alabama, but
didn't you know? And why Well, their offensive line was young, remember,
and guess what they've got now all those same offensive
linemen and they're the best team in college football. So
let's go back to the talent retention. USC will be

(30:29):
just fine as long as Lincoln can retain the talent
on the line of scrimmage. If he can take these
guys that are playing as red shirt freshmen and young players,
and if he can take them and continue to grow them,
continue to play difficult games and you know what, yeah,
win some of them, but retain those players. Then next

(30:50):
year and the year after, guess what, they're the ones
that are going to be controlling tempo. They're the ones
that are going to be able to control four minute offense.
They're the ones that will be able to drive down
and not have the quarterback under so much pressure, because
that's what Texas was. Remember two years ago, people in
Austin were like, hey, man, is Sark really like? Are
we are we sure about sark and now toast of

(31:10):
the town, Texas is the best team in college football.
They're undefeated, they should beat Georgia and why they developed
and they did so at the line of scrimmage. I
think that's the trajectory that USC is on personal I
told a friend and my follow recruiting last year's recruiting
class at usc IS the first time I remember, they

(31:31):
got three legitimate big time d linemen. They're not playing
their kids, they're in the weight room. So I like
where you're going. Okay, so this weekend I thought there
was a real separation. So I talk quarterbacks a lot. Yeah,
it's pretty good at a costa high if you go
find the old video. Yeah, I love slinging Cowherd. Did

(31:51):
you play quarterback? Non particularly well? Oh okay, the screen
pass was my alley. Oh yeah, listen, Yeah, I love
the screen pass. Yeah. So I watched Sanders and I
think it's pretty obvious that's the number one pick. So
for a couple of reasons. First of all, quin yours
like him hurt again, don't love that. I always had

(32:14):
Sam Bradford hurting college hurting. The pros don't want to
see it cam Ward feels small. I've fallen for this before.
Should Sanders same height. I never think about his height. Well,
you can't call one of them small, and then the
other one that you don't think about is telling you
when I look at Camp that doesn't make any sense.
It may not, But when I look at Shadoor Sanders,
Mahomes and Shouldur Sanders the same size, they play well.

(32:36):
That means cam Ward is the same size as that
he has. So why are you worried about his size?
I think he comes across as a little bit of
a mover and a playmaker. Man, I don't get that.
I think is easily the best quarterback in college. I
think he's separated. This is not a knock against should
Or I just don't think he's He's separated, and it's
not because of anything he hasn't done, as much as

(32:58):
I just think cam is really good. I would agree
with with Quinn, like the injury issue is an is
an issue every year that quin yours gets banged up.
It's like, well listen now, now, it's it's a pattern.
Carson Beck without brock powers, it's not the same. I've
into four hundred yards last week. I just I just
don't think he's separated, like like what you're trying to suggest,

(33:22):
he very well may be the first pick. I think
Shudor Sanders is such a better player than he gets
credit because everybody loves to hate on Colorado. Shud Or
Sanders and his death had run game last year, No,
and he didn't have his and he didn't have his
best Hunter and Horn and Jimmy Horn, so he didn't
have his two best one receivers team in the Big twelve.
And they're going against Kansas State and they have a

(33:44):
lead with three minutes to go. Now, I felt like
the coaching staff for Colorado just fumbled the game at
the end. You don't play man coverage up four inside
of three minutes to allow big plays to happen. You
force him to snap at ten, eleven, twelve times. So
you've got to create layer to your defense and force
them and encourage them to run the football, rally up,

(34:04):
make the tackle and then let the clockwork on your side,
and then fourth and five, don't throw a fade. This
is this is my pushback on Shudor. He's fabulous, he
is accurate, He is tough. I mean, you talk about
tough this, guys. There's no one in the last two
years in college football that has been hit more than
sorg Sanders. And he gets right and he gets right

(34:25):
back up there, and he continues to stand in the
face of pressure and deliver dimes. And I love that
about him. He's an anticipatory thrower. He's smart, he understands
defensive structure. His game translates. There are two things that
I think he needs to get better at. Number One,
he's got to quit holding onto the football. He is

(34:45):
allergic to incompletions and so he doesn't want to throw
the football. Problem. You've got to throw it away, in
particular at the next level or you're gonna get hurt.
And then the next thing is is that he has
this and it's happened twice this year. He throws these
weird like, oh, I'm gonna take the fade, and it's like,
it's not the situation to throw the fade. He did

(35:05):
think against North Kota State when they needed to run
out the clock and he threw a slot fade. He
shouldn't have done that. It was incomplete fourth and six
on Saturday night against Kansas State, they've got to drive
down to kick a field goal. It's fourth and six.
He throws a fade. It's like, dude, you got blitzed
from the field the wide side of the field. You've
got an inbreaking route from that side that has inside
leverage on the support defender. Throw the inbreaking route. So

(35:29):
there are things that frustrate me about Shudor, namely those
decisions and critical moments and that he holds the football.
But everything else, this guy is fabulous. He's accurate, he's tough.
He absolutely to your point, he absolutely could be the
first pick in the draft. I just don't want to
throw cam Ward away because I think cam Ward is

(35:50):
also sensational. All right, Klass top ten. You know, listen,
we're going into a twelve team playoff. You know Indiana
six and zero. Well, I do know that I'm calling
their game this weekend now, so they're they're pretty interesting.
I love told Kurse Signetti, their head coach. Dude, this
guy he can do it. He's the next Kaelin Debor.
Just letting you know. Somebody told me that Bloomington, Indiana

(36:12):
is the most underrated college town in America. Oh interesting,
It's the best college town. Now I've flown over it.
Several times we have. Did you look out the window
and you thought, huh, I was busy point? But I've
heard it's really nice. AnyWho your top ten? I think
I think we can all Can we all say this now? Texas, Oregon,
Ohio State? Those are the best three teams in the country. Yes,

(36:35):
I feel no problem saying there's no doubt. That's why
I didn't move Ohio State down much further. Yeah, I
still believe in George's talent. That's a great win for
Penn State. And I think a momentum builder for James Franklin.
And I think a over a very good team in USC.
USC's ranking and record are not indicative of how how
good their team is. And then the team that I
would just throw out there that no one's talking about

(36:57):
because they got throttled Week one, Watch out for another
forty nine points last week. I've been telling you for weeks,
haven't I. It's like, watch out for Clemson. How about
Dabo Sweeney? He stuck to his guns.

Speaker 3 (37:08):
They did.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
We all piled on him. Talent retention keeps his guys.
You know something is uh? Last week was so fun.
It is college football in a world of anxiety. Every
four years. Saturday was what I love about college football.

(37:30):
There's a little corporate feel, but it's just one big party.
Yeah was a Eugene. Yeah, Eugene's a party. By the way,
Baton Rouge was the party. LSU comes back, they beat
all miss Day storm the field. I mean, it's I
love it. There's it's it's more unpredictable than the NFL.
It's less corporate. I mean, I love the NFL, and
all of us love the NFL, and it's the king obviously.

(37:52):
College football, though, Man's it's just like it's like the
fabric of It's like the fabric of the country. He
ever had a family gathering and one member he's a
little inappropriate. He took his clothes off, jumped in the pool.
You threw him a towel, he wrapped up. He went home,
and you were kind of mad at him. And then
the next morning you wake up and think, does he

(38:13):
have more fun than the rest of us? Maybe I
should jump in the pool naked once in a while,
to big party. That's college football. It's kind of it's
almost a little off its teaster sometimes. But God, when
I watched Oregon Ohio State, I was so happy for
all those fans. It's so good good, I love it. Man,
it's great to see you as well. Man of stability.

(38:35):
You know, some might say talent retention. You've kept me
around all these years. Well done, you're doing.

Speaker 2 (38:41):
A good job.

Speaker 1 (38:41):
I'm the Lincoln Riley of this thing. I'm five hundred.
When my talent well, you better get better in a hurry.
